rue, the item you’re holding is a magazine, not a book. And while we know Lifestyle isn’t your best friend, we like to think we’re a close friend, the kind of close friend you trust to introduce you to the best your community has to offer. That’s our goal every month – to bring you the best places to explore, sights to see, tastes to try – and never is that commitment more evident than in this, our annual Best Of issue. Inside you’ll find page after page of individuals, services, and businesses you voted Best of 2018. Many, like Awesome Smiles Dental Center in Haymarket, have been your favorites for several years. Others, like Lyrique Dance in Gainesville, are enjoying their first turn in the spotlight. To all of this year’s Bests, we offer our heartfelt congratulations. And to all of you who took the time to vote, we offer our sincere thanks. Because of you, the 2018 Best of Haymarket/Gainesville competition saw a 100% increase in voting over last year. It’s my hope that you’ll hold onto this issue and make a list of the “bests” you’ve never been to, used, or tried, and give them a shot. You might just discover you like them best, too. Oh, and while you’re in list making mode, why not jot down the back to school stuff your kids and grandkids are going to need in no time? To help you get started, check out Back to School on a Budget. Your students will love the up-to-the-moment styles. Your wallet will love the savings. We’re honored to be the close friend you count on for this kind of information and more, and hope the rest of your summer is the best!

BEST ICE CREAM
Cookies & Cream For a business that’s been open just two years, it’s safe to say that Cookies & Cream is doing pretty well for itself. Between its premium hard-serve ice cream, soft cookies, and specialty sodas, it offers sweet treats for every kind of sweet tooth. “I think that we kind of found a niche where we serve hard-serve ice cream. I think it’s kind of classic and traditional, and not a lot of places are doing a hard-serve ice cream anymore. So, it’s kind of something unique in our area. And our homemade cookies, I mean who doesn’t like a frosted cookie? And then we also serve our signature drinks, which are new to our area, and they’re a different

option,” said owner Robyn Candland. Robyn and her husband Pete Candland actually got the idea for the business by visiting college towns in Utah. “We saw these little stands in college towns, these small footprints in parking lots, where they just served cookies and drinks. And cars were lined up around the block to get into these places, and they were just little drive-

thrus! And I thought, wow, that’s such a fun idea, you just grab a little snack and off you go, and so that’s kind of how we started the idea,” said Robyn. Cookies & Cream is a popular spot for families and teenagers alike, bringing everyone together to revel in the creamy deliciousness it serves daily. “I tell people all the time that if I didn’t work there so much, this is a place I’d take my family to and hang out,” laughed Robyn. From the second you walk inside the little blue house, you know you’ve made a good decision about where to get your sugar fix. And, after you order, a server delivers your treat straight to your table, either inside or outside on the beautiful patio where picnic tables await and strands of bright lights glisten. Oh and let’s not forget that Cookies & Cream offers the perfect spot for an ice cream selfie. Strike a pose with the bear statue out front, and snap away. According to Robyn, the bear started its life as a beautiful tree that had to be taken down because it had been struck by lightning multiple times. “We just had this giant tree stump, in the front, and we wondered, ‘How can we incorporate this?’ The guy who carved him helped us come up with the idea, and our employees helped name him. His name is Clawford H. Bearover, and Bearover is in honor of the Harover family who owned the house before it was sold to the town of Haymarket.” In terms of community involvement, Cookies & Cream is all about spirit nights. Explains Robyn, “We’ve had church groups, non-profit groups, schools, and swim teams. It’s a lot of fun. The groups publicize the evening and get involved by providing volunteers who deliver orders. Plus they get 20 percent of all the sales we do during the event. Spirit nights are a great way to support the community and they’re also great advertising. Groups bring their people to us and they get to see what we offer. It’s a win-win.” Discover for yourself why Cookies & Cream was voted best ice cream shop for 2018. Pay them a visit at 14600 Washington Street in Haymarket. For more information, visit CookiesAndCreamShop.com, and keep up with specials and events on Facebook at @CookiesAndCreamShop.

BEST BREAKFAST PLACE
Hidden Julles Haymarket Maybe you’ve heard of Hidden Julles, or maybe you’ve just seen its beloved Rambler (aka, its food truck) at an event. Either way, if you’ve yet to check it out, you’re missing out. There’s a good reason Hidden Julles was named best breakfast place this year and it’s this: Hidden Julles is completely committed to freshness. Every item on its menu is made fresh using natural and organic ingredients. When asked about about why he thought it was important to offer such fresh and organic options, owner Aaron Lynch said, “Whenever I thought about opening a restaurant, I thought, ‘I want my kids to be able to eat this.’ Honestly, a lot of people around here eat only fresh and organic foods, and it’s hard to find places comparable to how people eat at home, so I set out to do that.” In addition to its tasty smoothies, juices, lunches, and of course breakfasts, Hidden

Julles’ menu includes vegan and paleo selections, and the staff is happy to adjust any item in order to make it paleo or gluten-free. Conveniently located in the heart of Haymarket, Hidden Julles is renowned as much for it’s delicious fresh foods as it is for having the area’s first and only food truck - the aforementioned Rambler - which is used to deliver the cafe’s popular dishes to weddings, special events, and business lunches. With all the love the community has for Hidden Julles, it’s no surprise people want to introduce others to the cafe. And one of the best ways to do that, if you can’t come in of course, is simply to reserve the Rambler! One of Hidden Julles’ major goals is to be as local possible. Not only do they source their food locally from places such as Whiffletree Farm, but they also stay local for other services. “I use local vendors, not only

for our products but for insurance, accounting, things like that,” explained Lynch. Recently the cafe added weekend hours during which it serves dinner. Said Lynch, “We wanted to test the dinner menu and decided to do so on weekends. To be open for 14- or 15-hours a day is a lot on the staff. But ultimately our goal is to be open seven days a week.” So if you’re looking for a place where you can get anything from juice to a sandwich to some stuffed french toast, and you live in the Haymarket/ Gainesville area, give Hidden Julles a try. Located at 14950 Washington Street in Haymarket, stop in and taste for yourself the reason it’s this year’s best breakfast spot, and check the Facebook page at @HiddenJullesHaymarket for daily deliciousness updates.

Readers let us know that GainesvilleRx Pharmacy is their preferred prescription for all their pharmaceutical needs by voting it best pharmacy of 2018. The family-owned pharmacy offers first-rate services in a traditional retail pharmacy setting, and sells everything from over-the-counter and prescription medicines, to medical supplies and nutritional supplements. In addition, and maybe most importantly, GainesvilleRx is what’s known as a compounding pharmacy. For those unfamiliar with the practice, compounding medicine is personalization of prescriptions in which individual ingredients are mixed to the exact strength and form of dosage that is best for the patient. Owner and Pharmacist Pal Kahlon said on compounding, “Some medication is not available on the market as a commercial product, so we have to make it, and when we do, the medication is precise to the patient’s needs.” GainesvilleRx has a clear commitment to customer satisfaction, even delivering prescriptions to homes for free, which can be convenient for parents with small children or those who are ill or who have just had surgery and cannot drive. Its staff is also always available to answer questions, make recommendations, or help find what a customer is looking for. As for general recommendations, Kahlon said, “Everybody should use probiotics once a day. I do it. Females and males, as they advance, have less calcium in their bodies, so you should take calcium supplements, or Vitamin D. In general, you don’t need supplements, only when you’re

BEST LAWN CARE AND GROUNDS MAINTENANCE COMPANY
Cornerstone Landscaping
22
{ AUGUST 2018 |
GAINESVILLE LIFESTYLE
}
Established in 1997, Cornerstone Landscaping set its intentions on creating professional quality landscape designs. Over 20 years later, it’s doing just that, according to your votes. Cornerstone offers landscaping services to meet each individual need and budget, from butterfly gardens to waterfalls, patios to ponds. Cornerstone Landscaping refers to itself as a, “designbuild-maintain company” and this is the perfect way to describe what it does. It offers endless possibilities, because each design is made specifically for each client based on lifestyle, budget, and personal taste. Whether it be phased installations or full installations, Cornerstone is there to do as little or as much as you want. Owner Terri Aufmuth is well-loved by all her clients, and is known for not only her warm and accommodating personality, but also for the amazing designs she creates for every client that walks through her door. She personally manages every project, along with an experienced and qualified crew, so you know your landscape is in good hands. She says the most important quality in any worker is a commitment to learning new techniques and improvements in the industry, which makes sense, as especially in the design world trends are always changing. So how does the process work? Well, according to Terri, “I begin each design after a careful question and answer session with the client about their likes, dislikes, color and texture preferences, maintenance expectations, site conditions and their ultimate expectations.” After she figures out what the client is looking for, she adds, “I take
all the information gathered at the initial appointment and carefully put together a plan that meets the client’s needs, expectations, and budget, and create a phased approach of the work to be installed as it makes the most sense for the project.” Projects can take anywhere from 5 to twelve days, depending upon the elements involved. However, Terri’s favorite ones to do are the simple patios with seat walls and fire pits, “because we know within a 5-7 day time frame a family will be making memories with a space we created.” Cornerstone Landscaping is also a proud member of several professional associations, such as the Virginia Nursery and Landscape Association and the local Chamber of Commerce. On her community involvement, Aufmuth says, “We are members of the Haymarket Gainesville Business Association, whose tagline is ‘where business meets community’ and we firmly believe this. We support local swim teams, such as the Braemar Blasters. We are members of 100 Women Who Care in Gainesville, and the IMPACT Club of Northern Virginia. We support PACE WEST, and our founder is a member of the Gainesville Haymarket Rotary Club, Keep Prince William Beautiful, and The Novant/UVA Foundation Hospital Board. Cornerstone Landscaping supports these and other non-profits in all its activities.” Cornerstone Landscaping can be contacted at (703) 754-2843, and you can find them online at www. cornerstonelandscape.com or on Facebook at www.facebook. com/Cornerstone-LandscapingInc-232537656812707/.

New places through old books Books can take you on new adventures, but no one said the books have to be new BY EMILY CHILDRESS
P
icture this. You’re a viking, getting ready for a battle, and you’re polishing your shield as you look out over the misty Baltic Sea. Or maybe you’re a young woman in the nineteenth century, dressing up as a man to sneak out each day and work to support your family. Now you’re sipping a nice glass of wine in Paris, now you’re running across a battlefield, now you’re attending a school for wizards, now you’re hurtling through space at over 17,000 mph. That is the power of books. They can take you to new places, at new times, with new people. But with all the new adventures that books bring, who said the books have to be new? In fact, ask almost any book connoisseur and they will tell you there is nothing better than the smell of an old book, bound in leather with parchment pages. While leather-bound parchment is not readily available on the market, used books are. Read on for the nearest places to get your used book fix, and for a low price, too.

THE PNEUMONIA VACCINE Who should get it and when? BY ASHTON MILLER NOVANT HEALTH UVA HEALTH SYSTEM
P
neumonia is a leading cause of people checking into hospitals across the United States. In fact, one out of every 20 adults who gets it will die. But two pneumonia vaccines can protect those most vulnerable to the illness. During August, National Immunization Awareness month, shedding light on the importance of pneumonia vaccination can save lives. Dr. Victoria Hammonds, a family and geriatric medicine provider at Novant Health UVA Health System Bristow Run Family Medicine – Stonewall in Gainesville, explains details about who is at risk for pneumonia and how they can benefit from the pneumococcal vaccine. “Two groups of people need to get the pneumonia vaccine – generally, all adults over the age of 65 and people under the age of 65 who smoke or have certain chronic illnesses like asthma, diabetes or heart disease,” Hammonds said. Pneumonia is an infection of one or both of the lungs caused by bacteria, viruses, fungi, or chemical irritants. It is a serious infection or inflammation in which the lungs’ air sacs fill with pus and other liquid. According to the American Lung Association, pneumonia is a common complication of respiratory infection – especially the flu. “Despite being preventable, pneumonia can very rapidly become a life-threatening illness and adults 65 and older are at greatest risk as aging

starts to change the immune system,” Hammonds said. Lifestyle factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, and undernourishment can also raise your risk. “The current recommendation for adults who don’t smoke or have chronic illness is to receive the Prevnar 13 vaccine at age 65,” Hammonds said. “Once they receive the Prevnar 13 vaccine, it is recommended they receive the second pneumonia vaccine, Pnuemovax23, 12 months later.” Unlike the flu vaccine, there is no need for an annual vaccination. It is also recommended that those under age 65 who smoke or have a certain chronic illnesses should receive the Pneumovax23 vaccine at the time a chronic illness is diagnosed. Hammonds said once these patients reach age

65, they should follow pneumonia vaccination guidelines for adults over 65. “These vaccines are effective,” Hammonds said. “They prevent people from getting pneumonia, and help save lives.” In addition to being vaccinated, there are also steps you can take every day to help prevent respiratory infection: • Steer clear of cigarette smoke • Wash hands often • Clean frequently touched surfaces • Use a tissue, your elbow, or sleeve when coughing and sneezing • Manage conditions like diabetes, asthma, and other illnesses Are you at risk for developing pneumonia? Talk to your primary care provider about the vaccine. If you don’t have a primary care provider, find one at NovantHealthUVAHealthSystem.org/ doctor. ❖

PROWL Pantry at PACE Students shop on Fridays as part of positive behavior program supported by the community
BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
F
or principal Maria McDonald, affectionately known as Mrs. Mac at PACE West school in Gainesville, “schools should be an integral part of the community they inhabit.” A little known, fun part of the school’s Positive Behavior Intervention Program is helping enhance the connection between our community and the children at this school. It’s called the PROWL Pantry (Prepared, Responsible, Open-minded, and Willing to Learn) and the original concept was implemented about 15

years ago. As part of the PROWL Pantry program, students earn points for “making good choices, meeting academic expectations, and showing responsible behavior,” says Mrs. Mac. These points are accumulated until the exciting day of the week comes when the pantry is open for business. On Fridays, kids “shop” during their lunch hour. It gives a whole new meaning to TGIF for these kids. The pantry’s humble beginnings were a skinny cabinet filled with toys, games, snacks — basically anything that would appeal to the kids attending school at the time — and was stocked by the teaching staff from a small part
of the school’s budget. But one day about 10 years ago, PACE principal at the time Dr. Mary Ellen Garduno and staff member Kecia Wolf visited and spoke to the Gainesville-Haymarket Rotary Club about how the community could help the school. Inspired to act, Rotary Club members Linda Marlow and Amelia Stansell had lunch one day to discuss it. This is when the vision of the PACE Village was born. This village, named after the catchphrase “it takes a village,” would be a group of organizations, churches, and women’s groups that could work together to fill in the gaps for needs in the community. More key players were brought in to the PACE Village from the Rotary Club, Dominion Woman’s Club, Haymarket Gainesville Business Association, and local churches and businesses. The village began initiatives to fill funding needs in the community as well as other special projects. One of those projects was the PROWL Pantry. The GainesvilleHaymarket Rotary Club approved a grant and the Dominion Woman’s Club provided donated items to help the pantry move towards the important program that currently exists. Currently, the Dominion Woman’s Club and the Rotary Club work handin-hand to keep the pantry supplied and provide a group of volunteers who come every Friday to run it. The items available have changed throughout the years and have grown from a few items to more than a hundred, including pokemon cards, clothes, and sports gear. All items available for “purchase” from the pantry were donated to the school. When students earn 1000 points in good behavior, it equates to 1 point to spend at the store. The
I had a student who worked extra hard during the school day to work to be on level 1. Once he was promoted to level 1 he would complete all of his work and have successful days in order to go to Prowl Pantry on Fridays. He would be so excited when he would come back from lunch and would give his friends gifts that he purchased for them. He enjoyed being able to spend his hard earned points on his family and friends. He would also buy
volunteers running the pantry happily accept suggestions from the kids as to what items would most motivate them to earn points, and then will solicit those items to be donated from the community or will use the budget from their organizations to shop for them. A visit to the school on any of these fun Friday afternoons would find students excitedly finishing their lunches so they have plenty of time to peruse any new items in the pantry since the last opening. They check in with their teacher to confirm the amount of points they have earned or banked, and then spend some time looking around, talking it over with their friends, and making the ever
things for his teachers and for his foster parents.” — TEACHER MRS. G
I have a student that starts talking about Prowl Pantry in the early mornings on Friday. He gets excited to buy gifts for friends and family and sometimes a little treat for himself if he does well. He bought headphones recently and wears them to and from school.” — TEACHER MR. MIKE
I have a student that emails me a list of certain items he would like to earn through successful days, kind acts, completing his work and being safe. He asks and asks about his prizes and has to discuss his behaviors with me before he earns the reward. It allows him to reflect on his own behaviors and work hard for his reward. This student is doing so well, that we are considering transitioning him to his base school this school year.” — PRINCIPAL MRS. MAC
important decision to spend or take the chance of saving their points for any possible new items the next week. Some kids will have their eyes on a particular item that is worth a high number of points so they learn to budget and save. During the holiday season, these points become ever more important because some students use them to purchase gifts for their loved ones. This is something they particularly enjoy since they can use their own form of money and feel proud when giving it to the recipient. This is a time when teachers know the points may feel more valuable to the kids so rewarding them for achieving their goals reaps its own benefits.
But the children aren’t the only ones benefiting from this program. The volunteers truly enjoy the time they spend with each other and with the children. Mrs. Mac encourages them to engage students in conversation and assist them in making their decisions. This program serves as another way these children can have positive and enjoyable interactions as part of their day, especially with people who are giving their own time to a cause they hold near to their heart. Amelia Stansell adds that this “hidden jewel” in our community has allowed her to develop a bond with kids through seeing them grow through the years and gain confidence. “Many are special needs and to watch them come out of their shells and build rapport and relationships with the various volunteers was amazing to watch,” she says. Volunteer Martha Feeney explains that the entire experience is rewarding for her, including “shopping for items for the pantry, sharing the time on Friday with a member from the Rotary Club, seeing the excited faces of the younger students as they come into the cafeteria on pantry day, and watching the students mature over the years.” Volunteer Donna Flory also really enjoys hearing the stories about the other volunteers’ time spent with the students and shopping for the students’ requested items. “Knowing that a student is going to have an exceptional Friday when they see the item they’ve been wanting makes me smile!” she says. Being part of these organizations isn’t the only way those in the community can help this program. Mrs. Mac emphasizes that the community can offer support in the way of donating new or gently used items; some examples are gift cards, books, music, video games, toys, socks, earbuds, sports gear, and so much more. She suggests calling the school first if you have something in mind or need more ideas on how to help. Visit pacewest.pwcs.edu to learn more about PACE West school or call 571-402-3700 to ask how you can help. ❖

Kids and Strength Training It’s about building more than muscle BY ZACH HACKERSON NEXT LEVEL PERFORMANCE COACH ACSM CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER
A
s a strength coach, I talk to a lot of kids and their parents and hear many misconceptions about childhood fitness, particularly as it relates to weight training (also known as resistance training or strength training). Concerns from parents about it stunting their child’s growth, making their child bulky, or that it’s dangerous. None of those concerns are valid, and there’s plenty of science to support that strength training, when done correctly, has many benefits both physical and mental. It typically takes 8-12 weeks to see marked improvement in young athletes’ coordination and performance through change of direction drills, acceleration and deceleration drills, plyometric or jump training, and lifting weights through basic movement patterns. Getting stronger and learning these athletic movements increases the chance of an athlete earning more playing time and decreases the risk of injury.

Further, kids who strength train stand with improved posture, benefit from increased explosive power, and have an edge up on the competition as they age. Science also shows that strength training not only helps improve selfesteem, academic focus, and executive function in children, it increases a child’s likelihood of continuing exercise as a lifelong habit. A recent report by the National Institutes of Health found that

Because weight training also helps improve conditions like high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and obesity, we encourage inactive children or those not playing sports to strength train as well. Using an InBody scan we have tracked marked improvement in body composition with several of our youth fitness participants who were facing weight issues. And, we have found that even in kids with physical

When choosing a program for your child, and for the sake of safety, make sure the coach controls the amount of weight lifted and the modality utilized. Kids should not try strength training on their own, or by watching online videos. Be sure the training is always supervised by an experienced and certified strength coach that teaches your child proper technique, the purpose and benefit of the exercises, as well as safe and respectful gym behavior. Performed in a safe environment with proper load, weight training will increase strength, but not muscle size. As your

His strength has improved to the point that he is reaching his goal of walking with one crutch. I like to say that the iron belongs to everybody, and I know that his self esteem and confidence has risen because he is doing strength training. One thing we hear from college coaches and our athletes that have gone on to play collegiate sports, is that those athletes who strength train are better prepared for the rigors of playing at the collegiate level. With a well qualified coach and a structured program designed for your child’s age and development, strength training is completely safe and beneficial. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association all agree that a supervised strength training

At Next Level, we work with youth who want to be competitive athletes, as well as kids who want a good time in a non-competitive environment. ack to school shopping ranks right up there with Christmas as a major budget buster for families. This year, parents with children in grades K-12 are expected to spend an average of $501.00 on everything from clothing to paper and pencils, and many will spend much more. But all that shopping doesn’t need to break the bank. One great way to spend less is to shop in consignment stores. These days, consignment stores offer the latest styles from name brands at a savings of 50% to 70% per item. And you won’t believe how many items you’ll find with the original tag still attached! Consignment shopping is good for the environment and even better for your budget. And if your kids have any concern they won’t be totally on-trend, check out the following pages for of-the-moment looks that were styled right off the racks at Do You DejaVu Consignment in Warrenton, and Stuff! Consignments in Gainesville.
For a young, preppy look, Connor is wearing flat front khakis from Bonabos and a Vineyard Vines button-down Oxford. Sarah is wearing J. Crew floral shorts with a light blue plaid blouse and Hunter Original Tall Wellington boots in aubergine. A printed messenger bag completes her easy, casual look.
These two are picture-perfect proof that youth and style can absolutely be synonymous. Olivia is wearing black skinny jeans with J. Crew three-tone flats and a two-tone leather jacket over a rust colored tank. A large, vintage leather carrier completes her look. Max is stylish in red shorts and a striped navy tee topped with a plaid shirt left unbuttoned for a super casual look.
For a look that’s a little edgier, Olivia is in a shoulder cut romper paired with a denim jacket and crepe leather sneakers. Rompers are everywhere and will be with us all through the fall season. Max looks sharp in Levi’s jeans and a plaid, button-down shirt paired with Vans sneakers.
For these two young beauties, we picked easy going, on-trend outfits. Savannah is in a blue printed romper, short denim jacket, and cool Sperry topsiders (next to which she's placed a pretty patchwork tote). Mary is in a super cute and age appropriate Zara dress complemented by a Vera Bradley backpack.

f the many reasons to savor the annual recurrence of the heat we like to call summer, high on the list has to be food cooked on the grill, and by food I mean a juicy steak. The dog days of summer are upon us, and it’s the perfect time to move the kitchen outdoors. Whether you’re a foodie or a bachelor with no other kitchen utensils, everyone appreciates the enhanced flavors from grilled food, the ease of cleanup afterwards, and the opportunity to play with fire. Grilling also offers the chance to eat well for much
less while playing outdoor games like horseshoes or cornhole with a drink in hand. Like working the remote control, cooking outdoors is a lot easier than most men would like to admit, and it doesn’t matter whether your grill is gas, charcoal, open pit, or electric, as long as you keep a few tips in mind. First and foremost, do all the prep work you can before starting the grill, especially when using wood or charcoal. Timing is crucial and you can’t very well turn coals off. Now, start by opening your favorite beer, and let’s get prepping.

First, marinate your steaks. My favorites for the grill are Ribeye, Porterhouse and T-bones. Everyone has their favorite prep, but I prefer a little Worcestershire sauce to dampen the meat and then a heavy dry rub. Make your own or use a store bought rub like Montreal or Emeril’s, and add salt and pepper. Don’t worry about it being too salty, because it doesn’t permeate the meat, but it does help form a flavorful crusty exterior. Also be sure to have the meat at room temperature before grilling. Cold meat does not cook evenly. Next, decide what your side dishes will be. This would also be a good time to grab another beer. I prefer a garden salad and summer corn. Summer corn is easy to cook on the grill. Just keep it away from the high heat and it will be ready to go in just a few minutes. If you want potatoes with your steak, you can even bake them on the grill. This will add time, but it’s worth it. Try rolling the washed potato in salt, pepper, and Italian seasoning, then wrap it in foil, stab it with a fork, and cook it on the grill away

from the hot center for about an hour until it gets soft on the inside. Now make your drink decisions. If you happen to be watching your carbs or just prefer wine, it’s perfectly acceptable to replace the aforementioned beer with a cold glass of Peju Sauvignon Blanc as your aperitif. Also, while the potatoes are cooking, pop the cork on your favorite bottle or two of Alexander Valley Cabernet so that it has time to open up before dinner. Another delicious idea for while the potatoes are cooking. A good way to pass the time while you wait for the potatoes is to make the best outdoor appetizer – shrimp on the barbie. There’s no easier way to turn your steak dinner into a little surf and turf then to buy a pound or two of large unpeeled Argentine Shrimp, douse in melted butter, fresh squeezed lemon juice, and lots of Old Bay. When the grill is good and hot, place the shrimp directly on the grates using your grilling tongs. Flip after a couple minutes when the shells turn pink. Remove, peel, and dip in cocktail sauce. It’s a great

appetizer while you’re waiting, and the mess stays outside. Finally, it’s time for steak. T-bones, Porterhouse and Ribeyes are made for the grill. They have enough marbled fat to give the meat that extra flavor. Make sure the grill is hot enough to get the needed sear, and then cook to desired tenderness. Remember, no matter how done you like your steak, it will continue to cook after you remove it from the grill. This is where the art of grilling comes in to play. It’s easy to overcook, so err on the undercooked side. You can always cook longer if need be. Now sit down with your friends and family, share the cab that was made to accompany steak, and enjoy the fruits of your labor while you can. Red, hot August and the search for the missing holiday BY MARK LUNA
I
f you saunter through today’s Gregorian calendar, you’ll notice that in virtually every month, there is pause for either a traditional holiday or some kind of National Celebration Day, honoring something. We have the whole year covered, as our country’s full of them. Obviously, January 1st kicks it all off, with a midnight kiss. Fast forward to year’s end and you have two really big ones that occupy November and December. And then there’s April’s special Sunday, with chocolate bunnies and eggs. There’s also a couple of national 3-day weekends, at the end of May and beginning of September. And of course, don’t forget the pyrotechnic celebration every July, honoring our nation’s birthday. Still, for every one of those traditional, grand occasions, we also have lesser, but equally important days of recognition, like February and lovers, March and leprechauns, October and goblins, and June’s two Sundays, one each for mom and dad. Then there’s August. Lonely, forgotten August. The month where everyone skips town, trying to stretch out summer as long as humanly possible before begrudgingly returning home to get ready for school, or work…or Congress. Sure, you have celebratory days of the JV kind, like National Mustard Day, on August 4th, and Wiggle Your Toes Day, on the 8th (that’s a heck of a week). And don’t forget doozies like Left Hander’s Day, on the 13th, and National Spumoni Day, on the 21st. But the one

After months of crisp whites and floral rosés, red wine is swirling inside the barrels, just waiting to explode.”
day that truly epitomizes August happens to fall on the 27th - National Just Because Day. That’s right, just because. I must confess, though, I love NJBD, for it sets up my favorite celebration day that August somehow managed to snatch up for itself, and that is National Red Wine Day, on August 28th. Now that’s how you polish off the month! After months of crisp whites and floral rosés, red wine is swirling inside the barrels, just waiting to explode. And no matter how high the thermometer climbs, a great red just can’t be denied, especially when the AC is cranking. So, for this issue, I’ve picked two producers and six rosso selections that I think are perfect for August. Seth Cripe makes great California pinot noir. Hailing from Anna Maria Island, Florida, Seth was bitten very early by the wine fruit fly, showing earnest, if not unusual interest at the age of 12, and reading anything and everything he could about the wine world. Soon after, the restaurant gigs came,
as did wine list exposures. His calling was heard and, at 17, he left for California to pursue his wine dreams. After 12 harvests at some of the world’s most renowned wineries, including Caymus and Pfeiffer Vineyards, he founded LOLA (named after his favorite dog) in 2008, and set out to make high quality, yet approachable wines. Of his numerous offerings, my favorites are his three pinot noirs – North Coast 2016, Russian River 2016, and his single-vineyard beauty, Artisanal Series Pinot Noir 2014. The North Coast PN 2016 is a unique blend of pinot vineyards from Mendocino, Russian River, and the Sonoma Coast. An entry-level, walk-in wine, it preserves dark cherry fruit, a touch of cola, and redwood forest aromas. His Russian River PN 2016 is a step up, with darker concentrations of both fruit and terroir, all exclusively sourced from California’s most prestigious region for pinot noir. It is both refreshing and refined. If you want the best, then you must try his Artisanal Series PN 2016, a small batch of wine produced solely from the Coast Grade Vineyard, situated less than a mile from the Pacific Ocean, on Ben Lomond Mountain – the westernmost area of the Santa Cruz Mountain appellation. This wine is gorgeous, with overflowing aromas of ripe plum and strawberry, with a palette to match. Throw in a touch of spice, fresh fig, and excellent acidity, and you have greatness. Any (and all) of these three wonderful pinots can be best enjoyed, in honor of LOLA of course, on August 10th. You know, National Spoil Your Dog Day. Staying in California, my old stomping grounds, we turn to the beautiful red wines of the Peter Franus Wine Company. Much like Seth, only add a few decades, Peter’s winemaking skills were born of a passion, both for wine and the way of life that it offers. He is both studied and imaginative, a craftsman and an artist, and his wines reflect the core knowledge and heartfelt love that he has for his winemaking home, Napa Valley. Napa Valley represents barely 5% of California’s total wine production, but its stature is global. And for the countless number of visitors it welcomes every summer, it knows that red wine isn’t just for winter consumption, not even close. Peter’s wines are world-class, and in choosing his
reds, I’ve decided on three that I think separate him from so many others who are still trying to be great, his Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014, Brandlin Vineyard Mount Veeder Zinfandel 2014, and Lake County Red Hills Rhone Blend 2014. If you’re going to drink Napa, you have to drink Cabernet. Peter produced his first Cabernet Sauvignon in 1981, as winemaker for Mount Veeder Winery; he knows what he’s doing. His Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon 2014 is produced in the legendary Howell Mountain AVA, in the northeast corner of the valley. This is a majestic wine, dark ruby in color, with a shower of inviting aromas such as dried herb, cassis, and subtle vanilla. Floral notes add to its elegance and approachability. Ripe yet moderate tannins and good acidity create balance, and plum/cherry overtones add freshness and focus. It’s full bodied, but never weighty. Brandlin Vineyard Mount Veeder Zinfandel 2014 is the way to go if you want to “dance with the one that brung you.” Zinfandel is truly a California original, despite its Primitivo grape origins, and Peter’s Zin is a showstopper. Coming from one of the most exclusive vineyards in Mount Veeder, 1200 feet above the Napa Valley floor, this wine is alive, bursting with spice, black cherry, cranberry, cinnamon, and pepper, all in a firm and concise structure. Zinfandel is a zesty grape and this wine doesn’t miss a step. It’s a big night out at the end of a hot summer day. And finally, something a little different. Lake County Red Hills Rhone Blend 2014 is a gamble that paid off. A spectacular property, situated at 3000 feet elevation, Red Hills is a not place for every winemaker. Soils are thin and drain instantly, and the elevation sets vines well above the hot summer heat trapped in the valleys below, aligning them in the path of cool westerly Pacific breezes. And all of this makes for superb wines, if you can pull it off. This French-inspired bottling is composed of Syrah, Grenache and Mourvèdre, the three classic varietals of the Rhone Valley, France. Not your typical Napa wine, but brilliant nonetheless. Peter’s skills truly shine here, as each grape’s characteristics come through – the clove, smoked ham, and pepper of Syrah, the lavender and floral notes of Grenache, and the brooding fruits of Mourvèdre, all commanding complete attention. And like LOLA, Peter Franus red wines are absolutely perfect for those special August occasions – like National Friendship Day on the 7th, National Relaxation Day on the 15th, and Kiss and Make Up Day on the 25th. Whatever your day of choice, just get to the 28th, and all will be right in August. If you have any questions about the wines, you can find me at info@winespique.com. Until then, Happy Vino’ing! ❖

LANDSCAPE SUMMER SURVIVAL
GUIDE
BY TERRI STEVENS
S
o after a wet and cool spring, the dog days of summer have arrived. Long gone are the benefits of the early season rains as we settle in to dusty, dry, and cracked earth to anchor our struggling plants. But do not fear – maintaining your summer landscaping is easier than you think. It is really important to water deeply and early in the day. Watering late in the day, during the hottest time of day, is not the best time. Most of the water will evaporate rather than reach plant root systems. Conversely, watering at night, before sun-down, promotes a beneficial environment for disease to grow on your struggling plants. If at all possible, water early in the morning when the ground is able to absorb moisture. As far as how much to water, plants have varying requirements and soil conditions can vary greatly in one landscape space. The general rule of thumb, and again, it’s a rule of thumb, is 1” of moisture every 5-7 days. This can be measured by leaving a tuna can or dish in the garden and watering thoroughly until the container is full. Now this is for landscape beds. For trees, it’s best to leave a hose at the base at a slow trickle for 20-30 minutes depending on the size of the tree and soil condition. Again, this is suggested, not a finite answer. If in doubt, water your landscape and then dig a hole at least 6-8” deep and check the

moisture in the soil. You should be able to make a doughy ball with the soil, not be able to squeeze excess water from it. Believe it or not, more plants are lost to overwatering than underwatering in the summer months. Unfortunately, the symptoms for overwatering and underwatering are very similar – often yellowing leaves. If you have an in-ground irrigation system, continue to check your property and monitor water flow. If you have soaker or drip irrigation, check it frequently. The holes can get clogged, and the hoses can be disturbed by root growth, dug up or even chewed by animals. It’s important to check the integrity and accuracy of your irrigation system. Remember also, plants such as river birch and sycamore will shed in hot and

dry conditions as a means of protecting themselves and preserving their resources. For your lawn, more frequent watering for shorter amounts of time is best. Remember those roots are closer to the surface than shrub, tree, and perennial roots. It’s also best for lawns to mow high in the summer months so that the grass is not being stressed. As far as fertilization goes, there are many schools of thought on this, but the general consensus is it’s best not to fertilize plants when they are under stress, and this includes grass. It’s best to not fertilize at least a month prior to when hot summer temperatures are expected. Just keep watering, and not before nightfall. Keep those mowing blades sharpened and clean periodically with rubbing alcohol to prevent spreading disease. Don’t give up! Some of your plants will go dormant in the summer heat. Give them a chance, and do not yank them from the yard, as many will revive in the fall with cooler temperatures. If in doubt about the health of a plant, The Prince William County Extension Service is an amazing resource and hosts plant clinics at local farmers markets or sometimes garden centers. You can contact them directly at 703-792-6289.❖
