PUBLISHER: Dennis Brack for Piedmont Publishing Group dennis@piedmontpub.com
A lot happens in a year. As our world and lives change ever faster, just a week can seem like a long time. By Friday, Monday is a distant memory. So the one year marker is significant. And it’s now been a year since I had the honor of becoming publisher of this magazine. When our company purchased the Lifestyle magazines from founders Tony and Holly Tedeschi, I pledged to continue their mission of building a better community through information. The magazines don’t deliver “the news” per se — no crime and car wrecks here — but they do deliver news that can be more meaningful. Stories about the people, places, and businesses that make our communities unique are important. Thanks to our great staff and group of contributing writers and photographers, we’ve had the privilege of telling hundreds of these stories in the past year. While the magazine’s mission has — and will always — remain firm, every healthy enterprise needs to evolve. This spring, we re-launched the magazine’s digital presence with a new mobile-friendly website, piedmontlifestyle.com. This destination provides access to all three of the Lifestyle magazines’ stories in a format that’s easier than ever to share on social media. The magazines are also evolving in print, which remains healthy, thanks to

your readership and advertising support. Starting next month, the Lifestyle imprint will expand to Gainesville. We’re excited to tell another community’s stories and provide an effective way for local businesses to reach customers through messaging that doesn’t get lost in the mix. As part of this transition, Broad Run Lifestyle will fold back into the Warrenton magazine, where it started as an offshoot several years ago. We’ll continue to tell stories from The Plains, Marshall, Vint Hill, New Baltimore and the places between in Warrenton Lifestyle, which will be distributed at more than 30 shops and other locations in the Broad Run area. elf-proclaimed bug nerd Andy Lima of Haymarket urges kids and teens who have an interest in something a little bit unique to “embrace it,” because you never know if that hobby will turn into something bigger. That’s exactly what happened to the kid who, as far back as he could remember, collected and observed any creatures he could find in nature, something his parents fostered from an early age. “From the time that Andy could walk, he would stop, squat down, and observe insects and other critters in nature. His curiosity and interest made every walk in the woods an adventure,” his mom Dulcey says.

While he’s always been a naturalist at heart, a few particular experiences serve as fond memories of when a childhood curiosity turned more academic. One was in fifth grade, when Andy accepted the challenge from his teacher, Mr. Roth, to find a click beetle or mole cricket in the field behind the school. Dulcey also remembers this teacher giving every student a butterfly net as part of an insect-collection unit — one that rarely left Andy’s side. To this day, a butterfly net accompanies Andy’s golf bag when he occasionally visits local courses with friends. Another influence was a high school biology teacher who tasked his students with
college while he was studying environmental management, he continued studying insects while also honing his collecting skills and the craft of mounting specimens for display. He says that as he became known as the “bug guy” around campus, people would bring him pictures and specimens. He truly enjoyed this because it allowed him to impart his knowledge — but also add to his own internal encyclopedia if he had to look up an insect unknown to him. After graduating with a B.S. in Environmental Management from Indiana University, he worked first for Clarke

creating and observing habitats. Andy says this experience began his collection and curation of insects. Neighborhood, Washington, DC,” which was published in the American Journal of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene. But what may have been most important about this study was the timing. It coincided with the World Health Organization’s declaration of Zika as a public health emergency, something that rarely happens. Other examples of public health emergencies are H1N1 and
Ebola. The story about Andy’s findings was picked up by the media, and a photo of him holding a bag of collected mosquitoes made its rounds through social media. That was just the beginning of Andy’s social media star status. Six months later, combining his professional expertise, enthusiasm for educating others, and love for hip-hop, Andy wrote and recorded his first publicly released music video entitled “Zika 101.” His video gained more than 11,000 views on YouTube in less than a year. MC Bugg-Z became a local sensation. Andy was interviewed on NPR, and articles have been published by the Washington Post, CNN, WTOP, and many other news outlets and associations. This video wasn’t his first foray into music, though. Since 2004, he had been rapping as a way to share information with others about his love for all things nature, and especially public health. One of his first recordings focused on the 17-year cicada brood back in Indiana where he was living at the time. “No one else is doing this,” he says about his songs. “I rap what I know… and I know insects very well.” With the goal of being short, concise, and

More recently, he secured a position as a Senior Biologist with the Fairfax County Health Department’s Disease Carrying Insects Program, where he has been for more than three years. A typical day for Andy may involve working in the field trapping insects, inspecting yards, or identifying and testing mosquitoes and ticks. He looks for vector-borne diseases like West Nile virus, Zika, and Lyme disease. This part of the job uses his education and knowledge. But Andy Lima’s personality lends itself to a completely different side of the job: outreach to the community — a talent he excels in at work as well as in his free time. While his position entails coordinating and participating in events to help the community reduce their exposure to these diseases, he has attained national media attention for his music videos that combine public health topics with a hip-hop sound. Andy’s claim to fame began in 2011, on a visit to a friend’s home in DC while in the city to attend a hip-hop show. Realizing that having a “bug nerd” as your friend can have its advantages, the friend asked Andy to take a look at some mosquitoes in his Capitol Hill basement apartment. A glimpse of the insect piqued Andy’s interest because he identified the species as one not native to our area. Although unusual, it wasn’t unheard of. Each time he visited, he observed this same species (the Aedes aegypti) and then even some larvae. For six straight summers, Andy observed and collected the species, taking samples from other areas such as bird baths, trash cans, and sewers in the blocks surrounding the original “hot zone.” His find proved that this particular species, one that usually lives in tropical climates, was somehow surviving the winters. Andy contacted the University of Notre Dame, where genetic

in July to highlight the global burden of mosquitoes and create a call to action to humanity to combat mosquitoes. Andy no doubt revels in these professional achievements. Each of them pales in comparison to the wonderful accomplishments in his personal life. He’s been married for seven years to his wife Stephanie, who he met on Halloween when she was dressed as a bee. Since the birth of his daughters Olivia, who is now almost four, and 18-month-old Emma, Andy’s priorities have shifted.

If you have an interest, embrace it. As focused as it may seem, there are others who are also interested in the same things. Your passion will be contagious. If you believe in something and you are excited about it, it catches on when you share it with others. You can affect that change. There is likely to be a niche for you somewhere to use that skill. You might not even know it’s a dream yet, but sometimes an interest becomes your dream. I didn’t say I wanted to be an entomologist when I was 5 and finding bugs. Some of it is luck but a lot is sharing your interest. Focus in and connect. No doubt whether it’s a career or not — you will get great rewards either way.”

PERFORMANCE TRAINING FOR YOUNG ATHLETES

s a parent, it’s not always easy to assess the needs of your young athlete, especially when it comes to athletic enhancement, strength and conditioning, or nutrition and recovery. Having over 35 years of experience training athletes of all ages, I’ve witnessed first-hand training of young athletes for travel, high school, collegiate and even professional sports. The landscape has changed drastically during these years. However, there is one common thread at all levels: sports have become way more competitive! My intent is to offer insight on how to progress your young athlete—concentrating on the ages of 7 through 18—through this matrix so they have the best opportunity to be successful on the field and, more importantly, in life. After all, we all want our kids to live a healthier, happier, and more active life than we’ve had. But how we do we do that? By helping them to develop a strong mindset, love movement, stay strong, and avoid injury. It is important to discuss goals and plan performance training with your athlete; here are some things to consider.

How old is your athlete? Of course this is an easy one, but consider that the nervous system of the human body is fully developed at 12-13 years of age. In order for your child to master basic handeye coordination (catching & throwing), basic running skills, jumping and landing skills and overall body control and balance, it’s important that kids begin learning these skills before that, between the ages of 4 and 11. It’s not necessary for it to be competitive, but it should be instructive and fun. Can you imagine your child as a 35 year-old adult wanting to run a marathon or play recreational softball, basketball, tennis, or golf and not having the skills to throw, catch, hit, or shoot a ball? Now is the time to develop those skills. Are your goals for your athlete aligned with their goals? Let’s face it, we all want our kids to be superstars in everything they do. Academics, sports, social situations, and even earning potential. Take the time to have this conversation with your child on an ongoing basis. Mostly you’ll get “I don’t know”! If your young athlete is noncommittal, that’s okay, as long as you’re both on the same page. Where is your young athlete on the athletic maturity scale compared to his or her peers, teammates, or competition? Let success and confidence be your guide! The first rule is, are they having fun? We all know that success doesn’t happen overnight and that our kids need to learn that failure and disappointment are a part of life, but building confidence is key to athletic

and life success. Be sure that your athlete is participating in a program or sport that corresponds with his athletic maturity and not necessarily his age group. Bragging about your son “playing up” may not be the best thing in all situations, especially if he’s not ready and sits the bench or gets overwhelmed. If your child is not keeping up due to a lack of conditioning or speed or even strength, you should consider getting him professional coaching outside of the team to get him caught up give him an edge. What are the strengths and weaknesses of your athlete’s game? From my experience, weaknesses are usually the lack of speed, quickness, and strength. Very seldom is it ballhandling or goal-scoring. When deciding between multiple skills camps or enrolling your athlete in a 10-week performance program, go with the 10 week program. What level of coaching have they had in the past? Professional or parent led training sessions? If it’s only been parent led so far and your athlete’s development seems to be stalling, then maybe it’s time to invest in professional coaching.

What are you willing to invest in your young athlete? When will I see a return on my investment? Untrained athletes tend to improve drastically during the first 6-8 months of training, whereas the trained athlete makes only incremental—but no less important—improvements.

Should they be training while in-season? No question! Players get weaker and lose quickness as the season progresses. From the competitive level and up, all athletes need at least 2 days per week of strength training during the season. Find the time... make it happen! What should pre-season look like? Eight to twelve weeks prior to the season is critical for an athlete. Going into the start of practice at peak speed, strength and conditioning is imperative. Plan ahead! What are their time restrictions? Academics must be a priority, and sometimes we must know when to say “when.” Maybe we have to skip the second trip to the beach. Maybe we don’t have time for the extra skills training on Monday nights. But don’t skimp on strength and performance work. That’s the stuff that keeps you alive and healthy and improving your body…which is your machine! This is a lot of information to take in. But while you are considering your child’s future, keep in mind learning how to train and obtaining success is going to be the biggest factor in their ability to live a healthier and happier lifestyle as an adult. ❖

Sara Knight The Sweet Julia Grace Foundation Bristow, Virginia | 571-247-5176 SJGFoundation.org SJGFoundation@hotmail.com
When and why did you decide to start your organization? I started The Sweet Julia Grace Foundation (SJGF) in honor of my daughter Julia Grace, who passed in November 2013 at the age of 12. Julia’s life quote was: “Life isn’t about waiting for the storms to pass, it’s learning to dance in the rain.” I wanted to be able to come alongside other families whose children were in the “midst of a storm” and help them “dance in the rain” just like Julia Grace taught us to do.
“Raindancers.” We started our first chapter in my home state of West Virginia, and are partnering with the INOVA PICU in Fairfax to service families there. We’ve sent kids on dream vacations, built playgrounds, ramps, and handicapped accessible bathrooms, bought iPads to keep them connected, and even gave a young man an all-terrain Track-Chair so he could literally go anywhere he wanted. We’ve been blessed by our community so that we may now be a blessing to others. We are so honored to do so.
is now my home, and I can never imagine leaving my community. Even though our area is large, and a lot of people live here, it has the “small town” feel that I love. There are so many things to do here, and so many ways to get involved, and so many ways to meet each other.
Tell us about your experience with the HGBA. How has it supported you in your local business?
What are some hobbies you enjoy?
Being a member of the HGBA has been such a blessing to our foundation. The support our fellow members give SJGF has not only helped us grow, but has also been so encouraging.
What are the top business tips can you offer other professionals?
Our mission is to “Fill in the gaps, grant wishes, and meet the non-medical needs of (local and regional) children who are seriously ill, have special needs, or are in the midst of a medical crisis.”
If someone is considering starting a nonprofit so that they can help their community, I say go for it! You’ll never know all the things you have to know to start, and you’ll never have all your “ducks in a row” beforehand, you just have to take a leap of faith, and figure it out as you go.
Please share one of the greatest moments you’ve experienced in your current profession.
Are you from this area? If not, what brought you here and what do you like about our town?
Since we began in 2014, we have helped over 50
I moved to Bristow in 2003 from West Virginia. This
How does your business serve the local community?
What is your favorite season in this area, and why? Spring for sure. I love when our long winters pass and all the flowers start to bloom and everything turns green again.
Between being a realtor and SJGF, I don’t have much time for hobbies. I would say my hobby is spending time with people I love…which I would say is honestly the best hobby in the world!
What is your favorite restaurant? I love El Tio because it’s like our local “Cheers,” and the food is great.
What is your favorite local high school sports team? Patriot High’s golf team (because my son played on it for 4 years).
What was your first job, or your most interesting job prior to your current profession? I waited tables all through college and loved it, and also learned very quickly how everyone thought I looked like Helen Hunt. At least every other table I would walk up to (no kidding) would say “Do you know who you look like...?”
The Haymarket Gainesville Business Association was established in 1990 and is the premier association supporting business and community involvement in the Haymarket-Gainesville area. Just seven miles south of Gainesville on Route 29, some sort of enormous hay bale creation will direct you to turn into the Buckland Farm Market. As of this writing, the design had not been finalized. In the past, you might have seen a huge pumpkin man or a large spider with long black legs that kids love to see! The farm market has become a popular destination for families, especially during the fall season. In addition to the delicious array of aslocal-as-possible products—organic fruits and vegetables, homemade breads and pies, jams and jellies, meats and eggs— the fall season also brings pumpkins, apples, and cider to the market. If you’re like me, your love of all things pumpkin seems to intensify when the first cool breeze of fall hits you and you break out the boots and sweaters. Be sure to enjoy hand-dipped pumpkin ice cream and pick up a pumpkin pie or two. And don’t forget the pumpkin coffee. But the food is just one part of the fun Buckland Farm Market has to offer in October. Activities for kids include a playground, slides, swings, moonbounce, hayrides, and barrel train rides; all are sure to be enjoyed by all ages. If this isn’t enough action, when the sun goes down, take the children under the age of 12 home and come back for a haunted adventure. The Route 29 Haunted Farm is running for the 5th year in a row and is located in the corn maze behind the farm market. This year is going to be better than ever before. COURTESY OF CORN MAZE IN THE PLAINS
Above: The 2017 Corn Maze in the Plains maze. This year’s theme is “Pirates of the Corn-ibbean!”
Seventeen years ago, Kate and Hub Knott, owners of The Corn Maze in the Plains, began with a simple idea of creating a place where families could experience the beauty of fall in the Northern Virginia region. They believe the planting of the corn maze is a metaphor for the choices each of us makes that lead us down our paths in life. Throughout the years, their humble beginnings morphed into a fall festival that has become tradition to many local families. The main attraction arms participants with a crayon, a flag, and a blank survival guide to help them navigate through the maze and complete the map. Not to worry–those who get lost or overwhelmed can simply wave their flag to be rescued by the “corn cops.” For an even more challenging—and spooky— adventure, consider trying it in the dark! Only available on select weekend nights, admission to the night maze includes campfires, concessions, and activities; smores can be purchased at the food booth. Regular admission to The Corn Maze in the Plains includes the five-acre maze, hayrides, visits to the Country Store, farm animals to visit, and a farmers market on Sundays. Moms and dads can
grab some sparkling apple cider while the kids tire themselves out in the barnyard of fun, which features pumpkin sling shots, mini mazes, hay bale mazes, giant slides, farm obstacle course, roll tubes, fidget ladders, a spider web, and corn tires. Some of these activities are only available on the weekends so be sure to check their website for details. And don’t forget to grab some famous pumpkin pie fudge from the country store… or apple butter… or some pumpkin butter… or maybe “the world’s best caramel apples.”

Best known for their sprawling, beautiful fields of tulips in spring, Burnside Farms also found popularity this summer by adding a sunflower festival. This fall, the market at Burnside Farms will be back at the home farm off Route 15 north of the town of Haymarket. Fall favorites such as mums, gourds, apples, cider, pumpkins, and other farm-grown produce will be available for purchase. Families can enjoy a moon bounce, jump pad, double-run inflatable slide, playsets, cornhole games, and picnic areas. On top of all this fun, kids can meet some furry and feathered barnyard friends.

yankey farms 14039 OWLS NEST ROAD, NOKESVILLE FACEBOOK.COM/
If you’re the kind who loves to chop your own Christmas tree instead of choosing one from a pile, then you also probably like to pick your pumpkin from a field. Yankey Farms is the way to go this fall as it’s one of the only pick-your-own patches close to us. Although their location is in Nokesville, it’s a short drive through beautiful roads to get there. Owned and operated by Jay Yankey and his wife, with help from family, the farm has been growing produce and pumpkins since the ‘90s on about 125 acres. In the spring, visitors can pick their own strawberries and sweet corn; melons, tomatoes, squash and other produce are sold at a roadside stand in the summer. But that’s not all—Yankey Farm offers black angus cattle, as half and whole steers, directly to customers for their freezer. This year, they have grown over 30 different types of pumpkins for families to choose from when walking the fields in search of the perfect jack-o-lantern prospect. There is also a three-acre corn maze scavenger hunt, a cow train ride, a play area complete with pedal tractors, straw bale piles and slides, corn boxes (like a sand box but filled with shelled corn), and fun games for all ages. If you’re looking for fall ornamentals like gourds, pumpkins, corn stalks, Indian corn, or straw bales then the farm stand will fulfill your decorative spirit. But you can also buy apples, winter squash, sweet potatoes, greens, and many other farm fresh fall produce. Right (bottom 3): Join the fun at this working dairy farm. At Cows-N-Corn, kids can get up close with cows and learn about life on a farm.

When you’re a Rhinehart, a penchant for horror, gore, and creatures that lurk in the darkness comes with the territory. From as far back as his toddler years, Chris Rhinehart remembers tagging along with his parents as they created and hosted haunted houses at schools and YMCAs throughout Northern Virginia for the community to enjoy. He says his early exposure allowed him to see it in a different way than most people. “It’s in my blood,” he says with a smile. So far, this tradition has continued for 30 years and into the third generation of the family. “Total darkness in the cornfield” is what frightens Rhinehart the most. He and his friends dare each other to go into the field alone just for a good scare but, he says, “usually we have no takers.” When the family took a break from haunting for a few years, Rhinehart’s brother Billy started it back up again in his garage just for their neighborhood to enjoy. It was so much fun that Chris decided he wanted to carry on the family tradition and take the lead in his own venture. For two years, he hosted haunts at the New Baltimore firehouse but then wanted to expand on his ideas and explore the possibility of an outdoor environment. So the idea was pitched to the owners at Buckland Farm Market to create scary scenes in the corn field behind the farm market—and it was accepted. This fall, for the fifth year in a row families will brave the eerie darkness for an adventure of laughter and fright at
the Route 29 Haunted Farm. During the day, Chris runs Rhino’s Ink, a screenprinting and embroidery business he started in his basement and has kept small throughout the last six years he has been in business. His three loyal employees, Rob, Candace, and Verlin, really help out there during the two to three months each year Chris is busy with his more hair-
raising project. Chris says the long days of juggling these demands, in addition to coaching t-ball, are worth it: “I like to see people having a good time, and I really enjoy creating scenes that inspire laughter and fright.” He and his family take pride in the creative minds they are blessed with that allow them to create scarier and more unique scenes

every year. This wouldn’t be possible without the help of good friend and right-hand man Joey Garlem and many other friends and family. Now, even his four-year-old son uses the trademark Rhinehart imagination to contribute to designing and decorating. “One of the big things that separates us from some of the other haunts is that we change it up every year and we have a whole trailer full of costumes,” says Rhinehart. The actors are all real people and are decked out in full costume. The acting will be stronger than ever before, with the skits for each scene written and practiced for months before the opening. Well received by the community, the Haunted Farm has become a tradition for families who delight in screaming together while making it through the adventure. For about 30 minutes, participants will encounter frightful scenes as they make their way through the rows and rows of corn in the darkness. Families can enjoy food concessions, music, and a bonfire too. It’s sure to be a night to remember!

“This haunted trail in and around the barns of an abandoned, haunted farm will leave you breathless or gasping for your breath...come if you dare!” according to Haunted Hollows website. This 20-plus minute walking trail through an abandoned farm full of haunted barns and scary scenes also includes music, movies, campfires, and snacks available while you wait in line for your turn to scream through the trails in and around the farm. The farm, which has been in the same family since 1961, has a spooky past even without the halloween festivities, and may well be haunted on its own. Reading its history will give you the shivers before you even visit. Stories told in letters found in the walls and a teenager’s diary entries found in the attic reveal details of the farm’s past. It served as a Civil War hospital during the Battle of Second Manassas, and letters reveal gory stories of amputations and deaths. The farm seemed to have an unusual number of accidents, and livestock would not enter its barns. There is a previously unidentified cemetery under the vegetable garden with skeletal limbs likely from amputations. Eek! ❖

Tips for the Home Members of our staff share their advice BY THE PIEDMONT LIFESTYLE STAFF
When it comes to the home, we’ve all had more than a few of those “I wish I had done it differently” moments. While brainstorming ideas for this month’s home section we realized that each of us on staff, in one way or another, had little bits of advice to share with others... all based on our own “I wish I had done it differently” experiences. Doors This one is clearly a personal choice, but here are some things to consider. Do you like to open up your house to air out? A beautiful or ornate front door will be minimized if you place a screen or storm door in front of it. So, if you are not looking for a breath of fresh air through that entryway, then purchase your dream door. Other options to consider are doors with small or large windows, transoms to left or right (or both sides), wood, composite or metal. There are a myriad of options, but
consider these various points because your tastes do matter, as well as maintenance considerations.
Entryway and/or mudroom One staff member doesn’t have a mudroom and shared this with us: “It is absolute torture with teens in the home. I wish I had planned better when building my home (which doesn’t have a garage) to include an entryway reserved for shoes, coats, backpacks, and athletic gear.” So our advice to you is to consider where all this “stuff” will gather if you are
moving into a home without a mudroom. Some people utilize a screened in porch to unload the shoes and gear, which is still not ideal but does offer an alternative for wet, muddy boots and smelly athletic bags. Hooks and a bin for shoes are other options, but our parent with teens said, “We tried the shoe bin, but my children never quite figured out that they should use it, opting for the floor next to it instead.” And if it’s big enough, a mudroom can supply a logical place for dog crates and bowls. Another staff member values an entryway that’s welcoming
and inviting to guests. That doesn’t mean fancy and formal — just an easily-accessible place for visitors to hang up coats and slip off shoes.
Fireplace Get one, even if you don’t think you’ll need or use it. You will (and even if you do not it is good for resale and looks nice). Wood-burning fireplaces are beautiful and great for warmth and ambiance. Plus they offer the lovely smell and crackling sound to relax you as well. But, gas fireplaces are beautiful without the mess
Piedmont H O M E S
that wood ones make, and the gas ones come to life with the flick of a switch. You’ll have to consider which fits your lifestyle better.
Formal living and dining rooms If you are a formal person and love to gather in a place reserved for special occasions, then formal rooms are for you. However, many houses you may move into may have these rooms which can become wasted space if you aren’t that type of person. Here are some staff suggestions on what they use their formal living rooms for: office, library, music room, playroom, and hobby room. As far as using your formal dining room, one staff member’s family uses it as a catch-all for projects during the day but clears it in the evening for a family meal. This means that the projects must reach a good stopping point before dinner, so the supper is a relaxing finish to the day. For this purpose, they chose a sturdy, secondhand dining room table that can be elegant with a tablecloth covering it but can also stand the wear and tear of everyday practicality.
Furniture It is definitely worth it to spend more money on structurally sound pieces, as they last much longer. When buying your first sofa, save for one that will last you. Some of us have furniture that has lasted over 12 years, while others
“started breaking down in two to three years.” In terms of color, go neutral. Use pillows and throws to change the look if you get bored or want to change it seasonally. Plus, make sure it is comfortable; you spend a lot of time together as a family and it should make you want to stay and hang out. If you have pets, they are a part of your family and some of us allow our animals on the furniture. So, if you buy a leather sofa you can wipe it down and there will be much less pet hair sticking to your clothes. If that isn’t in your budget, consider pieces with removable covers you can wash.
Kitchen This is the main gathering space for family and entertaining in many homes, so you want to see if you can make it comfortable and inviting, yet functional. Make sure you have sufficient storage for your family’s needs. Also when looking at a home to buy or build, consider and plan for trash can placement and pet food bowls...will they fit? Will they be in the way? One common feature is a kitchen island. While an island can be helpful for extra counter space, it can block flow and take up needed room when guests are over, or when the kitchen is busy in the morning out-the-door rush. One interesting alternative is a rolling island with wheels so that it can be moved when extra space is needed — these
are especially good in a smaller-sized kitchen.
Rugs For some people, a plush, luxurious rug is the best thing in the world. For others with small children or dogs that like to “dig” to make their beds, it may be a great deal of money that is spent that may have an outcome that is not ideal. Some of us started with builder-grade carpet while children were young, transitioning to the high grade, luxury version once children have grown. Another option is to use inexpensive throw rugs on top of your low-grade rugs or hard-surfaced floor that you can clean or replace easily once they are worn, stained, or torn up (by the claws of your beloved animals).
Storage bins Color code as you plan and buy storage bins to organize items such as children’s clothes, holiday items, or other memorabilia. These items are a necessity. Plan where you have room to store them and utilize color system for you to easily find what you are looking for. Pretty baskets of all sizes can be used in highly visible places to dress up your room. But if you want to store things in a basement, crawlspace, attic, garage, or shed definitely use the tightlysealing plastic tubs. No matter the location, these bins will help protect your items from insects and water damage. ❖

Brrr! Crisp Fall Weather Means Cozy Fires Fire Marshal and Assistant Chief of the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue Matt Smolsky has some cold-weather fire safety tips. { Part 1 in a two-part series } BY PAM KAMPHUIS
A
s the colder months approach, we are all looking forward to the fun things fall brings… apples, falling leaves, fall clothes, and, of course, pumpkin spice lattes! One of the best things about the fall are toasty fires to curl up next to and lots of candles to decorate your space with a homey feel. Nearly half of home heating fires occur in the colder months, mostly due to heating implements: fireplaces, furnaces, hot water heaters, boilers, kerosene heaters, and portable space heaters. Matt Smolsky, County Fire Marshal and Assistant Chief of the Prince William County Department of Fire and Rescue, has offered some important tips to keep your home — and your family — safe. “The main thing to remember about all heating and heat-producing implements — no matter how small — is to keep all combustible materials

Hot water heaters produce heat, especially those with a pilot light, and can therefore cause a fire if flammable items are left too close — a particular problem for those of us who store things in the basement. We all love the ambiance of candles, especially in the fall and winter. But Smolsky is adamant about the danger of candles, and reminds us that all flames, no matter how small, can become a problem: “Although a candle flame is small, it is still an open flame fire. It doesn’t take very long for a little flame to become a big fire when it lights nearby combustibles” He highly recommends the use of battery-operated candles, but if you are a diehard flame candle lover, he cautions you to make sure, again, that flammable items are at least three feet away. Candles should be in a glass dome candle holder with a secure base so they will be less likely to be tipped over. Power outages are common in snowy weather, but Smolsky recommends not using candles as a light source. Use flashlights instead. Smolsky would like us to remember certain things as we head into the colder months: anything that can be lit by a match is combustible and therefore a danger; all things that produce any kind of heat at all should have a clearance of at least three feet on all sides; be very careful of children and pets who may knock combustible items or heat producing implements
“Although a candle flame is small, it is still an open flame fire. It doesn’t take very long for a little flame to become a big fire when it lights nearby combustibles” over; and never leave anything with a flame (candles, fireplaces, wood stoves) unattended and be sure that they are completely out when going to bed. One additional thing he strongly encourages everyone to do: “please ensure your home has an adequate number of smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test them frequently to ensure operational readiness. It may save your life.” ❖ Part 2 coming in a future issue: Fire safety during the holiday season.

Putting little brown things into the ground in the fall and expecting beautiful flowers to emerge from them in the spring is definitely an act of optimism, and the really cool thing is that it works! These days I think we could all benefit from turning off the news, going outside and doing something hopeful that is pretty much guaranteed to give great results. However, the best known spring bulbs are not necessarily the most rewarding. Deer and rodents will eat tulip bulbs right out of the ground. Or, if they miss a few before spring, they will eat the buds off before they bloom. Daffodils are critter resistant but they

I have tulips and daffodils and I love them both. But there are other less famous spring bulbs that are just as delightful, and in some ways less work or gamble.
WILD TULIPS Species tulips are the wild tulips that the modern day, large tulips evolved from. Large tulips were so rare and valued in Holland in the early 17th century that individual bulbs were exchanged as currency. Remember, large is not always better: deer tend to ignore the smaller, shorter tulips; fading foliage is not as prominent; and they come in a wide variety of colors, including red, that are not available in other bulbs. And, unlike their larger offspring, these flowers will not fade; instead they multiply slowly giving you more to love every year.

SNOWDROPS Galanthus, or better known as snowdrops, start the spring bloom season. They don’t mind getting snowed on and tolerate some moisture in the soil. These bulbs have been around for several centuries, they are native to the Mediterranean and were named Galanthus in 1753. I have one lovely snowdrop that is nestled at the base of a tree; it comes back every year with its pure white bell-shaped flowers nodding at the end of 5 to 8 inch stems.
DUTCH CROCUS You may be familiar with Crocus but you might not know that they are a member of the Iris family. The bright red threadlike stigmas from the Saffron crocus are the sole source of the seasoning and dye. One of the great things about crocus is that after they bloom, the foliage looks so much like grass that you can plant them in your yard. These earlier bloomers will be gone before mowing season. If you get your lawn aerated (or plugged), you can randomly drop a crocus bulb in those perfectly sized holes. Or, show creativity– spell out a word or create an image. Imagine “SPRING” spelled out in flowers in your yard. If you don’t have an aerated lawn, you can still plant them easily because you don’t have to dig very deep holes. They might be easier to see when you lay them out if you shake them up first in a bag of baby powder.

on stalks about three feet tall are the really fun ones. Since they are so very tall and showy you only need one or two bulbs. They do fine in my enriched clay garden soil, and appear to grow inches a day until the long lasting flowers open up in late April to early May. Their areas of origin are widespread and fascinating. Some are from the Mediterranean, some are from Asia, and some are from the Pacific Northwest. The flowers offer an array of colors; some are even truly checkered.
RIVER OF BLUE Several years ago I went on a garden tour where there were amazing houses and equally amazing gardens. Other than seeing the biggest Azaleas in the world, the image that has stayed with me is a river of blue forget-me-nots. The image simulated the appearance of real water, complete with a wooden bridge. Back

home in Haymarket, I sought to replicate the stunning scene and planted all sorts of small blue flowering bulbs each year by purchasing inexpensive large quantities of a variety of blue bulbs. Last spring I could really see my river of blue. Only one of the blue flowers I planted was fairly familiar to me: Muscari, or grape hyacinth. Its color ranges from white to dark blue, some white and blue together, and now even pink. These bulbs multiply like crazy so unless you have an area that welcomes a mass of flowers it is best to stay away from them. My suggestion is to try some less aggressive options. Ipheion uniflorum, also known as spring starflower, is a great alternative. In April/May they bloom with white or blue star shaped flowers on 3 to 6 inch stalks, and are related to onions so they are resistant to deer and rodents.
GLORY OF SNOW I have also planted Chinodoxa luciliae, which has the wonderful name of “glory of the snow.” These deer-resistant

small bulbs bloom early with star-shaped flowers on 5 to 6 inch stems. They come in blue, white, or pink, and prefer welldrained soil. They prefer to be planted in full to partial sun. The great thing about these early bulbs is that they bloom before the deciduous trees have leafed out, so what might be shade later on is full to partial shade during peak bloom time.
SQUILL I have planted over 500 bulbs of Scilla, or squill. While I plant the ones that bloom blue, they are also available in pale pink and white. In April, they feature small, downward-facing, vase-shaped flowers on 5 inch stems. Planting dark blue Scilla with something that blooms white at the same time (like small white daffodils) will create a stunning sight. Wow!

CALIFORNIA WHITE CAMAS Now the best for last (it’s my favorite). Camassia (commonly known as California white camass) is a bit taller than some other flowers. Mine bloom on stems that are about 18 inches tall, but I read that some grow to 32 inches. Since there are a variety of options, you can choose what is right for your location. I was first attracted to these flowers because they are native and do well in moist soil, which in the rainy spring I have a lot of. They bloom in true blue clusters of star-shaped flowers all along a strong stalk. Picture a bulb version of a short, blue Delphinium. In addition to that they bloom in May and June, the “gap” time between bulbs and perennials. They naturalize (or fill in an area) slowly, but well, and are even good cut flowers. Historical lore has it that Sacajawea cooked these for Lewis and Clark.
NOW IS THE TIME TO DISPLAY SOME OPTIMISM, TRY SOMETHING DIFFERENT AND PLANT LOVELY SURPRISES FOR NEXT SPRING. You may be able to find some of these bulbs at garden stores that have large assortments, but I have always bought them online. I have used John Scheepers because their information, quality, pricing, and packaging are excellent. They don’t indulge in questionable discount incentives. Now is the time to display some optimism, try something different and plant lovely surprises for next spring.❖ About the AUTHOR Lynne Galluzzo and her husband, Gary, have lived in Haymarket for 12 years on 10 acres of land where they garden extensively. FLU
SEASON IS BACK Experts say it’s time to get your annual vaccine BY ASHTON MILLER
40
{ OCTOBER 2017 |
I
t may be just the beginning of fall, but health care providers typically see their first cases of flu in October. Jennifer Staley, family nurse practitioner at Novant Health UVA Health System Bristow Run Family Medicine, said she recommends getting the vaccine as soon as it becomes available. “The flu shot takes about two weeks to start offering protection, so I recommend getting vaccinated as soon as possible,” Staley said.
HAYMARKET LIFESTYLE
}
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said flu season can be unpredictable, so it’s hard to assess its severity and duration. Flu outbreaks can occur as early as October and as late as May, so the sooner you get a flu shot, the better. “The flu shot is updated every year because the virus can change,” Staley said. She noted that the vaccine is the same whether you get your shot at your doctor’s office, an urgent care clinic, a drug store, or through your employer. Some senior citizens may want to wait a month for the high-dose vaccine. “There is usually a delay in the high-dose vaccine for seniors,” Staley said. “This vaccine provides better protection for those 65 or older. But if it will be harder for senior citizens to get back to
a clinic for the high dose shot, the regular flu shot will still be effective.” The American Academy of Pediatrics urges all eligible children and all health care workers to get flu shots. In previous years, an estimated 90 percent of pediatric deaths occurred in unvaccinated children. During the 2014-15 flu season, 145 children died from influenza-related illness and many of these children had no underlying medical condition, the pediatric group reported. “In addition to the elderly, children are at a higher risk of complications from the flu,” Staley said. “Children can start getting vaccinated as early as six months of age and that’s what I recommend to parents.” Staley said that if a child has never received the flu vaccine, they will need two doses, one month apart, for an adequate immune response. To protect yourself and your family from the flu this year, call today to schedule a flu shot with your primary care provider for your loved one or yourself. If you don’t have a primary care provider, visit NovantHealthUVA.org/ findadoctor to find one. The effectiveness of the flu vaccine can range widely from season to season, according to the CDC. Nonetheless, Staley said people who got the flu shot were better protected with it than without it. “One question I often receive is about how late someone can get the flu shot,” Staley said. “We recommend it through the duration of flu season. We have seen flu cases as late as May, so patients can still benefit from getting a flu shot after what we consider ‘peak season.’”❖

here are many stories to tell about the possible spirits who still live in the Manor House of Winery at La Grange. Both customers and staff have reported hair-raising experiences like doors slamming shut on their own and cold winds that come from nowhere. Operations Director Ross Forry tells the stories well, although he does claim to be skeptical. On the mantel behind the tasting room counter sits a glass of wine as a sort of offering to the spirits. Forry says the internet becomes disabled if the glass is not there; although they refill it daily, the wine in the glass seems to disappear more quickly than you’d expect it to from simple evaporation. And then there is the story of the Christmas tree in the upstairs parlor

room. Forry says no matter what kind of tree stand they use, they cannot keep a tree standing in the window in that particular room; when a tree is put up there, it is always found lying on the ground the next morning. There is a possible ghostly explanation; the Manor House was used as a hospital during the Civil War. There is a tale of a soldier that

be haunted. The bottom level of the Manor House was originally a cellar but is now a beautiful seating area for customers, complete with exposed beams and stone walls. This is the only place Forry has actually witnessed someone being terrified. He was at the winery with a father-and-two-son paranormal team. ghost hunters or paranormal investigators that have visited have described the spirits here as merely mischievous
history of the property, the other son ventured to the basement alone. About 15 to 20 minutes later, Forry saw a figure with a flashlight—the son who went off alone—sprinting through the yard after a frightening experience. The son was in the cellar when he heard voices. Assuming it was one of his group, he called out but received no response. He then heard wine glasses clinking together, and the door slammed shut at the top of the stairs. That’s when he tore out of the house! Forry says the sound of the wine glasses may be the detail that could possibly lead him to believe the story, because at the time all the wine glasses were stored in such a way that they were unable to clink together. Although the thought of ghostly spirits can be terrifying to some, Forry says that any ghost hunters or paranormal investigators that have visited have described the spirits here as merely mischievous. Most likely, the wine drinker is Benoni Harrison; he, along with his wife Catherine, was one of the longest running owners of the Manor House and lived there during and after the Civil War until his death in 1869. The girl who took care of the soldier was rumored to be Benoni’s niece. The Winery at La Grange is located at 4970 Antioch Road in Haymarket. The next time you visit, raise your glass of delicious wine to Benoni and the kind girl in the window. ❖ About the AUTHOR
