from the E D I T O R My daughter in law and I are planting a garden this year. Well, it’s more like I’m helping her plant a garden in our yard which has a better spot for it. In general, gardening is not my strong suit, but she knows what she’s doing so we should be ok. In the past I’ve managed some scraggly plants, but the bane of my gardening existence is the hungry animals in my yard. I’m not sure what eats what, but I’ve never been able to actually harvest anything. Anyway, that is vegetables. I’m actually not a whole lot better with flowers. But there are some in Fauquier County who are. Every year, I am in awe of the homes shown during Virginia Historic Garden Week. This year there are eight Fauquier homes on the Tour, sponsored by the Warrenton Garden Club and the FauquierLoudoun Garden Club. Their gorgeous landscaping and plants, gardens with no weeds, and beautiful architecture are open to the public for touring. Oak Spring, formerly owned by Paul and Bunny Mellon, is a not-to-be-missed treat. This issue is also our annual Senior Issue, which is always one of my favorites. I’ve always had a soft spot for the elderly, and I am in awe of the history and life experiences that they have lived through. My great grandmother lived to 101, and my mom likes to point out that she lived to see covered wagons going west and a man on the moon, all in one lifetime. Our seniors are our treasures, and due to the aging of the baby boomers, there are more and more of them in Fauquier County all the time, especially as more seniors move here to retire. Thanks to great programs and great people in our community, we are ready to assist our seniors as they age with resources and services. Fauquier County is pulling together, as we always do, to care for our seniors. What a great community to live in.

Hometown Hero Fauquier County nurse Stacy Mason, founder of Team Cupboard food pantry, appears on ‘The Rachael Ray Show’ BY TRACY BELL

S

tacy Mason isn’t comfortable with attention, but she was overwhelmed with it after creating a “take what you need, give what you can” food and essentials pantry at Mary Washington Hospital in Fredericksburg. The Fauquier County resident, who works in the hospital’s intensive-care unit and with COVID-19 patients, appeared Dec. 15 on “The Rachael Ray Show” to discuss the pantry, affectionately known as Team Cupboard. “We’re much appreciative that our tiny little hospital sparked enough interest” for ‘The Rachael Ray Show,’ said Mason, a nurse for more than a decade. “We’re grateful and it’s been wonderful.” Mason, who lives in Remington, has worked at Mary Washington Hospital for the past seven years, four spent in the ICU. She became a hometown hero last summer, achieving local appreciation for making a difference during an unprecedented time. Then word spread with the help of social media and news outlets, and Mason ultimately gained attention nationally and even around the world. Mason said she is the primary shopper in her family, so she knows that many people working long shifts at the hospital don’t always have time to shop and doing so has been made more difficult during the pandemic. The pantry is a way for colleagues to support one another during this time, she said. Team Cupboard not only exists at Mary Washington Hospital, but there’s one at Stafford Hospital and another at the corporate office of Mary Washington Healthcare, which oversees both hospitals. Because of the pandemic, said Mason, many people are struggling, with some seeing their household grow or double

in size, needing to take in other family members. Sharing makes life easier, she said, noting a few sought-after pantry items including goldfish and other snacks, hygiene items and children’s staples like wipes and baby food. She told host Rachael Ray all about it during a Zoom call that aired live on Ray’s show. That day, Mason was at the hospital on a work day when she spoke to Ray. First, the show aired pre-filmed background footage of Mason working at the hospital and then cut to the live

ICU nurse Stacy Mason participates in a live Zoom call with TV host Rachael Ray on The Rachael Ray Show on Dec. 15.

Zoom call with Ray interviewing Mason. “I wasn’t comfortable at all, said Mason, with a laugh, wondering aloud how people appear on talk shows in person. “I’m not one for attention and this was a very big deal. Rachael was fantastic, kind and nice, but even on Zoom I was anxious — I was a nervous wreck.” Ray, who temporarily renamed her show, “#StayHome With Rachael,” currently has no live audience due to COVID-19 precautions. Instead, she’s been airing the show from her upstate New York home during the pandemic, with the help of her husband, John Cusimano. On the show, Ray surprised Mason with a $10,000 donation to the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation from Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day and 1,000 bottles of product, including hand soap, dish soap, multi-surface cleaner and hand lotion. Xavier Richardson, president of the Mary Washington Hospital Foundation, said: “It is deeply humbling for the sacrifice of our dedicated healthcare professionals here in Fredericksburg to be recognized on a national level. Our associates and their families will benefit from these gifts many times over.” It also meant a lot to Mason and her fellow front-line workers in healthcare. “I am incredibly grateful to Rachael and Mrs. Meyer’s Clean Day for sharing this story and supporting us when we need it most,” said Mason, who later saw a video of the show she appeared on, since she had to work that day. She enjoyed watching it with her family, including her son, Sutton, 6; daughter, Lila, 5; and her husband, Chad Mason, who was born and raised in Fauquier County. In Remington, “everyone knows everyone,” Mason said. So, do residents know all about the attention she’s received over the pantry? “It’s known a fair bit, but, I don’t want special recognition for something that’s just meant to help

people,” she explained. Maybe that’s because caring for others seems to come naturally to Mason. The day she spoke with Warrenton Lifestyle, Mason was busy delivering meals to senior citizens in Fredericksburg through a program that partners with restaurants to get food to 40-50 seniors. Mason said she volunteers to do so once a week. Much of her time is spent donned in full protective gear as she cares for COVID-19 patients. So, while she appreciates kind community gestures directed at frontline workers, there’s one surefire way that people can help the most. “They can do what they’re asked to do. Stay home, wear masks, and social distance,” she advised. “We all miss family, we all want connections with people, but those are sacrifices we all have to make. Stay home and stay safe.” As for Team Cupboard, all donations will help stock the pantries and make them permanent fixtures, Mason said. “We do intend to keep it going; hunger is a very real need,” she explained. Mason said the pantry is really helping people — and while she never sought the attention the pantry brought, she’s very appreciative, noting an anonymous note left thanking her for starting the pantry. As word spread about Team Cupboard, the community began to donate money and pantry items. Tamra Wheeler, public relations coordinator for Mary Washington Healthcare, said that monetary donations for Team Cupboard can be made online by visiting Donate. MWHC.com and following a dropdown to select the pantry — or by writing a check and indicating “pantry” in the memo line. ❖ For more information or to arrange a drop-off of pantry items to Team Cupboard, email teamcupboard@mwhc.com.

A Peek Into the Past Kettle Run High School teacher brings Ötzi the Iceman to life in a new historical fiction novel BY HANNAH SAMLALL

Thirty years ago, two tourists from Germany were hiking in the Otztal Alps when they came across a discovery that would end up being one of the most remarkable archaeological finds of the century — the over 5,300-year-old mummified body of Ötzi the iceman. His remains have yielded a wealth of information about him, his life, and his times to fascinated archaeologists and historians. His discovery has since touched people all over the world, from scientists to fifth and sixth grade kids learning about Ötzi in school. Ötzi’s story reached Sharon Krasny, a Kettle Run High School AP English teacher, who found the story so interesting that she was inspired to write a meticulously-researched historical fiction novel about him, titled Iceman Awakens. Iceman Awakens tells the story of Gaspare, a young Ötzi the Iceman, who, desperate to confront his fate and honor his father, receives the ultimate sacrifice. At thirteen with a gifted calling and promise of prophecy, he must face his failures, fight the oppression from his brothers, and learn to live in a society that deemed him a curse. This is Gaspare, the reborn Iceman found murdered on the Ötzal mountains as he begins his tale that led him to that fateful day. From questions surrounding the mystery of Ötzi's mummy preserved from the Neolithic Era, this coming-of-age, historical fiction novel explores how he got some of his sixty-one tattoos, found his life's purpose in his copper axe, and how he lived. Iceman Awakens speaks of the timeless voices of love, destiny, and betrayal.

Growing up, it wasn’t until junior year of high school that Sharon Krasny found her voice, with the help of her English teacher. She wasn’t very fond of school, but Krasny was always captivated by storytelling. “[My English teacher] encouraged me and challenged me to keep going and keep writing,” Krasny said. “She gave me the gift of freedom to find my voice, which is why I try so hard to do that for my students, as well.” For someone who had never considered college as an option, it was her teachers who inspired Krasny to go to college to pursue a degree in English.”That’s a gift I’m so thankful that others didn't let sit dormant in me,” Krasny said. “That’s part of why I teach.” After college, Sharon traveled overseas to teach English. “I lived in Hungary and the Czech Republic,” Krasny said. “The students would tell me stories about their history and it impacted me in a way that made me realize how much people value the oral histories of who we are and where we came from. That’s part of why I started working with this book -- he just holds so many possibilities. He was discovered the year before I went overseas to teach. It’s

amazing that he is challenging us to reframe what it was we thought we knew about our history and who we thought we were.” Upon returning from overseas, Sharon began teaching in Fauquier County and was inspired to write by her students. “It was through trying to help students understand the human condition and trying to connect them to these old stories when I finally got to the point where I thought, ‘Why not me? Why shouldn’t I try this?” At the same time, she was enrolled in a graduate studies program where she had an assignment that required her to write a short story about Ötzi. Her professor at the time encouraged her to take the story and run with it. “When I started this project in 2015, only academic and National Geographic articles were produced. Now, pages of search results exist dedicated to studying him, debating his demise, copying his tools,” Krasny said. “The man's story was begging to be heard once again.” Upon searching for images of his 61 tattoos, a photo of Brad Pitt came up with a

I’ve expanded my team!

“It was through trying to help students understand the human condition and trying to connect them to these old stories when I finally got to the point where I thought, ‘Why not me? Why shouldn’t I try this?” tattoo inspired by Ötzi. “I worked on it on and off,” Krasny said. “I would take time to write a little here and there. It wasn’t until I was researching his tattoos that I realized there was an audience of people who would be interested in his story. I wanted to restore dignity to him, color to his society and culture because I wanted us to learn from him - that’s what I set out to do.” Years of research went into making Iceman Awakens as historically accurate as possible. “On him, they found a birchbark container that they thought was used to carry live embers,” Krasny said. “They didn't always knock two rocks or sticks together. Otzi’s discovery has opened this up, because we used to believe they were more primitive than they were. We used to underestimate

them because they didn’t have this advancement of technology.” During lockdown, Krasny was able to connect with people all over the world while researching Otzi. “I connected with two expert primitive bowmen, John Strunk from Spirit Longbow and Carson Brown from Echo Archery, who are out in Oregon,” Krasny said. “They gave me an hour of their time so I could learn about archery. One of them shared his first hunting story, which I included in the story.” The more Krasny researched and wrote about Ötzi, the more she realized that we can all relate to him. “What frustrated him, frustrated me,” Krasny said. ”I was in my story even though I tried so hard to remove myself from it. It’s that human element that writers have to tap into to make it authentic and make that connection real.” Among those Krasny was able to connect with during her research was a historian based in Austria. “I met a reporter from Austria and she introduced me to the archaeologist I’ve been keeping in touch with. I’ve developed relationships that goes beyond Otzi the iceman. In a time where we’re supposed to be separate, this man’s story is bringing people together.”

To pick up a copy of Iceman Awakens locally, you can visit The Open Book in Warrenton or Second Chapter Books in Middleburg. Although it is fiction, Krasney’s meticulous adherence to known facts serves to flesh out history, making it appropriate for use as a curriculum-supporting source for teachers as well as a fantastic book club option for adults and young adult readers alike. Currently, Krasny is working with the Allegro Community School of the Arts to produce an audiobook version of Iceman Awakens. sharonkrasny.com

One of Krasny’s main motivators for writing this story was to get the point across that we are so much more alike than we are different. “I wrote an opinion article for the New York Times about how in modern society, we look at other people and tend to judge them as either inferior, ignorant, or below us because they believe something different. My hope is that people will look at strangers with possibility and questions of wonder rather than judgments of criticism and see that we are surrounded by stories, including our own, and that our stories do have value and they need to be heard.” ❖

BOOK REVIEW:

A Terrorist’s World by James Reston, Jr. BY STEPHEN BROOKS

T

hey change our lives. They die by suicide or go to jail or are never caught. Some live a world away. Others live close to us. But who are they, those few who commit acts of political violence. In his new book, “The 19th Hijacker,” James Reston, Jr. confronts this question directly. The story follows Sami Haddad, the fictionalized pilot who hijacks United Airlines Flight 93 on Sept. 11, 2001 and crashes the plane in Shanksville, Pennsylvania before he can fulfill his mission to destroy the U.S. Capitol building. Reston’s is a work of historical fiction. Having almost no official records to rely on — many government documents remain highly classified — Reston reconstructs the aimless and ultimately tragic life of Haddad in logical, convincing detail. Reston published the book after his longtime friend, Congressman Lee Hamilton, co-chair of the 9/11 Commission, described the hijacker as a man “from a fine middle-class family, handsome and smart,” a man whose “options were open to him in life.” (Hamilton’s report also noted that the real-life hijacker nearly abandoned the mission a month before Sept. 11 because of a romantic relationship with a Turkish-German woman.) We all know Sami Haddad. He is “the spoiled kid from the well-off family, the below-average student who always needed extra help. The bumbler who could never seem to complete any large task, the charmer who covered up his deficiencies with his pretty smile, the dreamer who was always waiting for the chance to show everyone there was more to him than they had come to expect.” And there’s something else: he loves airplanes and yearns to fly. Haddad finds purpose and perhaps religious affirmation in the 9/11 suicide plot. But as Reston writes him, he also wrestles with uncertainty. We are left with the question: if the real-life Haddad had acted differently, could he have changed the course of history? Can any single person change the course of history? “The 19th Hijacker” is not a comfortable read. Not because it lacks intrigue (or vivid descriptions of a terrorist cell in Germany and an Al-Qaeda training camp in the Middle East) but because we know that Sami Haddad is doomed and his romantic partner consigned to a life haunted by painful memories. We also know that the plot hatched by Haddad and his accomplices leaves some 3,000 dead and more than 25,000 injured, changing the lives of millions more. Reston tells Haddad’s story principally through his girlfriend as she prepares for a career in dentistry and through the German

16

officer who oversaw the post-9/11 terrorist investigation in Hamburg. Moving in and out of the narrative are Haddad’s Islamic mentors and manipulators in Germany, the Middle East and the United States. The book is well worth reading. It helps its reader to understand the events of 9/11 and also offers a glimpse into the minds of men like Haddad, who commit acts of terrorism because they are compelled by political or religious conviction, perceived injustice, and sometimes even the belief that they are paving the way to a better world. ❖ James Reston, Jr. is the author of 19 books. A generous grant from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation when they incorporated put the tiny organization on solid ground and allowed it to grow. Aging Together’s top three programs ART OF AGING EXPO Aging Together hosts an annual EXPO aimed at older adults, their families, and caregivers. The Expo showcases services, products, businesses, and support groups from the five counties that are important to the senior population. In addition, the Expo provides an opportunity for guidance in navigating the difficult and ever changing healthcare and health services landscape, which confuses many seniors. 5 OVER 50: SHIFTING THE PARADIGM Aging Together is built on the belief that age is not a number, it’s a lifelong process. Every year, Aging Together recognizes one person over the age of 50 from each of the five counties in our region who has consistently, and sometimes quietly, been giving to the community over the course of their lives through both volunteerism and their professional work. “I get goosebumps

20

{ APRIL 2021 |

when I go and I hear all the wonderful contributions people have made. I tear up. It’s so moving to realize what a great resource we have in our older population. It’s all about shifting that paradigm that elderly people are not always the ones who need help, they can give a lot to our communities as well,” Selbo said. SUPPORTING OLDER ADULTS THROUGH COVID-19 The pandemic has created many challenges for everyone, seniors included. Adapting quickly, Aging Together formed programs to support seniors through the crisis. Aging Together’s iPads for Seniors program provides tablets to area nursing homes and assisted living facilities to enable residents to connect with family members. They published a free regional COVID-19 Resource guide with important phone numbers and websites, and they formed the Vaccine Calling program which assists older adults without online access to schedule vaccine appointments. ❖

iPads for Seniors Aging Together is working to alleviate the loneliness of our older population during the isolation resulting from the pandemic.

A

ging Together, the senior-focused local nonprofit supporting and connecting seniors to services and resources in a five-county region, including Fauquier County, has designated funds received from multiple sources to support their newest campaign: iPads for Seniors. This program is geared toward overcoming barriers of loneliness and boredom associated with secluded seniors, especially during this pandemic period. A main goal of Aging Together’s strategic plan is to “support health, safety and quality of life for older adults and their families.” This has become an even greater challenge since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. With older adults being especially at risk it is imperative that they are socially distant which often leads to isolation and separation from loved ones. Boredom, loneliness, depression, and anxiety ensue. Aging Together’s response to this predicament was the development of the “iPads for Seniors” campaign, a program where iPads are purchased and donated so older residents can connect with loved ones, doctors, and have an activity resource. “We asked for funding help from community partners and got a hasty response,” says Ellen Phipps, Executive Director for Aging Together. “To date over $8000 has been collectively received from the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, AARP, the Culpeper Wellness Foundation, Plow and Hearth, and individual donations to purchase 23 iPads for area nursing homes and also for Mintbrook Senior Apartments in Bealeton. It offers some relief to know both seniors and their families will be able to connect. We are so grateful.” These funds have already purchased a number of iPads which, with the

partnership of Rappahannock-Rapidan Community Services (RRCS), are being distributed. “We want to expand this program as much as possible”, says Phipps. Aging Together continues to seek funding through online donations on their website (agingtogether.org), as well as to track future recipients. “Anyone who knows of a facility who could use iPads to bridge the gap of isolation should certainly contact us," says Phipps. “That’s our job, connecting our aging population with resources. And thanks to generous partners, we can make that happen.”

The Impact of the iPad program Sophia Cameron, Community Relations Director, the Villa at Suffield Meadows in Warrenton We were delighted to receive two iPads through Aging Together’s program, and started using them immediately. It is so helpful to now have iPad’s dedicated to non-clinical use. The clinical staff uses iPads routinely to document vitals, progress notes and Activities of Daily Living documents for our residents. Before this gift, we had to

share iPads with the nursing staff which, of course, took priority. The new iPads have been used for telehealth visits, facetime calls, and capturing the social activities of our residents at the Villa which we share with families. An iPad is set up for all new residents moving into The Villa during their 14-day quarantine period. They are able to video chat with loved ones as often as they like, which helps families maintain connection during the restrictions of COVID-19. Recently we assisted a resident Nancy Wessel on the sale of her home on an iPad. The realtor and notary needed to witness Nancy sign a number of documents in order to facilitate the closing on her home. This was accomplished through the use of the iPad from Aging Together. Nancy was very appreciative that in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic she was able to complete her closing virtually. Having a dedicated iPads for social activities has definitely added to the scope of care and services we can provide for our residents. ❖

idea how to cook. He also had no idea how to use some of the equipment necessary for her care, such as a lift to help her get out of bed. Sam from Marshall was a young man who was helping to move his grandmother into his mother’s house because she needed additional care. In the process, he realized that he needed to move in himself and become the full time caregiver. He was completely blindsided and had no idea what to do. His life had just changed dramatically, and he didn’t know how to cope. These types of situations are where Cornerstone Cares, a ministry of Cornerstone Baptist Church that assists the caregivers of ill or elderly loved ones,

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

comes in. Sara Amos, program director, said, “Where we are most impactful is in those first few days of bewilderment. We can come in and guide caregivers to resources in the community that will help them, or just provide companionship and emotional support.” In the case of Tom, the Cornerstone Cares community and church brought healthy meals for him and his wife for two weeks. In the case of Sam, CC offered emotional support and referrals to services he would need. As our aging population increases, many are finding out that caring for an elderly or ill person full time requires a huge investment of time and energy and can be emotionally draining. Often, caregivers become so preoccupied with giving care that their own social, emotional, and physical needs are left on the back burner. They may not even realize they need support. The genesis of Cornerstone Cares came in August of 2019 when members of the church were searching for a mission to help those in the community. Influenced by church members with experience in caregiving, they decided to put their efforts into helping caregivers, giving them the support that they so badly need and don’t often get. With the support of Mike Poff, the current pastor of the church, and a grant of over $50,000 from local pillar The Path Foundation, they were up and running. Kirsten Dueck, the senior program officer at PATH, said, “At The Path Foundation, we are aware that providing care for a loved one can take a heavy toll on the family caregiver, who may also be in need of comfort and

support. This grant enabled Cornerstone Cares to expand and make more of a positive impact in our community.” What sets Cornerstone Cares apart from other organizations is that they have mastered the art of empathy for our local caregivers. While they do not offer medical help or advice and do not, at this time, provide respite care themselves, their mission is to better the quality of life for this overlooked group through referrals for all types of assistance, informative workshops, advice, social interaction, and plain old companionship and emotional support. Recently, we sat down with its program director, Sara Amos, who was warm, articulate, and compassionate. As a child, Sara had a close relationship with her grandmother, which developed her passion for senior adults and increasing their quality of life through recreational programs and friendship. A Fauquier resident, she initially helped with the program from afar assisting with grant writing requests. In August of 2019, she came on board full time where her education in human development, master’s in recreational therapy, and experience in adult day care make her shine as the group’s leader. Currently, there are six to eight volunteers in the program. After Cornerstone Cares supported Annie Marie McCarty through her husband’s final illness and death, she wanted to give back what they had given to her. When she became a volunteer herself,

{ APRIL 2021 |

}

she discovered that “you can give out your caregiving to others who are in need, and you can receive it too.” When things return to normal following the pandemic, Cornerstone Cares hopes to add more volunteers to its roster. A future goal of the program is to have their volunteers provide respite care, which is not something they can offer now. That would entail a volunteer sitting with a loved one while the caregiver is out of the house. During this visit, the volunteer would offer non-medical supervisory care until the caregiver returns. Sometimes a loved one needs more care than a volunteer can provide, such as an RN or CNA. In these situations CC is able to offer stipends for brief, occasional caregiver respites from their respite fund to pay for these professionals. Both the respite fund and the respite volunteer care are meant to enable caregivers to take a well-deserved break, go to a doctor’s appointment, grocery shopping, or just plain get out of the house for their own mental wellness. Sara said, “The biggest reward in this mission is seeing a caregiver come to life when they realize they are being cared for themselves. A lot of them have had to give up their free time, financial security, or their own health. They’re just grateful to know someone cares about them. You can just see the weight lift off their shoulders and a light return to their eyes.” ❖

Giving up the keys It’s about ability, not age: older adults and driving BY ELLEN PHIPPS

didn’t stay in her lane, and rode the brakes constantly. She had recently been in a fender bender in a parking lot, and had started to get lost on familiar roads. Clearly, it was time for her to stop driving, and the family, knowing her independence and temper, dreaded broaching the subject.

WHILE YOU’RE STILL DRIVING: STAYING SAFE BEHIND THE WHEEL

The National Institute on Aging offers some advice on maintaining your ability to drive. As we age, arthritis can make it harder to turn your head to look back, turn the steering wheel, or brake safely. Driving a car with an automatic transmission, power steering, and power brakes can make it easier and safer for you to continue driving. Failing eyesight is normal as we age. At night, you may have trouble seeing things clearly. See your doctor every year to be sure your lens prescriptions are accurate. Hearing loss is another problem that may happen as we age, making it harder to notice horns and sirens, which can be very dangerous. See your doctor often to see if there are things that might help.

EVALUATING YOUR DRIVING

C

harles Reed of Warrenton had considered himself a safe driver since he was a teenager. In nearly 60 years, he had received only one parking ticket and a warning from a police officer for speeding. Since his 75th birthday, Charlie’s daughter, Cheryl, noticed signs that he may be having more difficulty while behind the wheel. She had observed that he had difficulty judging stopping distances and turning to see when reversing. Cheryl wasn’t sure if what she noticed was a “red flag” or not, and she wondered how to approach the topic with her father.

28

{ APRIL 2021 |

Many people buy into the stereotype that older senior adults are a hazard and should be off the road. The truth is there is no “magic age” at which people should stop driving. It really depends on many factors, and is a very difficult decision to make. Cheryl researched and learned there was much to be considered about an older adult’s situation before assuming they should give up the keys altogether. Mary Ann Perrin of Orlean, on the other hand, noticed her 86 year old mother-in-law’s driving habits while following her home one day. She drove too fast on the side roads,

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

}

Ask yourself: • Do other drivers often honk at me? • Have I had some accidents, even if they were only "fender benders"? • Do I get lost, even on roads I know? • Do I have trouble staying in my lane? • Do I have trouble moving my foot between the gas and the brake pedals, or do I sometimes confuse the two? • Have I been pulled over by a police officer about my driving? If you answered "yes" to any of these questions for yourself or a loved one, it may be time to talk with your doctor about driving or take a driving assessment, which is available online at granddriver.net. The key is that we all age differently and there is no way to set one age when everyone should stop driving. It does however make sense that we stay aware of how changes could affect one’s ability to drive.

WHEN IT’S TIME TO STOP DRIVING

If you have an elderly family member who shouldn’t drive anymore, how do you stop them? There are different tactics to take, some involving a serious conversation, and some a little more complicated. Either way, families must be prepared for the changes that will occur when the senior stops driving:

the family will have to pitch in a lot more for grocery and medical trips, and help to combat the isolation and depression that will result from a senior staying home more. Sylvia McDevitt of the Piedmont Dispute Resolution Center admits this is a difficult conversation to have with a parent. She recommends letting the senior’s primary care physician take the lead, and advises family members to come into the conversation with love and understanding. Not driving will have a huge effect on the senior’s life, so you need to go in with empathy for them. In some cases, the DMV may not renew a senior’s driver’s license due to a failed vision test or a failed assessment of the senior’s health and ability to drive safely. Assessments, which are completely confidential, can be requested by physicians, police, judges, or family members concerned with driving safety. In Mary Ann’s case, her mother in law flatly refused to give up her car, and attempts at conversation were met with anger. The family considered other measures, such as taking the keys, taking the car itself, or even disconnecting the battery so the car wouldn’t start. In the end the subject was resolved when her mother in law stopped driving on her own because she became so forgetful that she kept getting lost. Assessing the driving safety of a senior family member is one of the most difficult things relatives have to do as their parents age. As emotionally charged as the situation is, the thing to remember is that it’s all about the safety of the driver himself as well as others on the road. ❖

WARRENTON’S

GREAT FIRE OF 1909 BY JOHN T. TOLER

A

t about 7:40 p.m. on the night of November 22, 1909, a fire started in the hayloft of the Bradburn & Clatterbuck Livery Stable on present-day Ashby Street, near the corner with Lee Street. The cause of the fire was never determined, but the first witnesses on the scene were met by tongues of flame shooting out of the hayloft, and a high wind was blowing. Most of the town’s firefighters were in town, either at a revival at the Methodist Church on Culpeper Street or at the Post Office waiting for the mail. They responded quickly when someone rang the Courthouse bell. But their efforts to battle the blaze quickly failed due to a lack of water. At the time, Warrenton was served by a reservoir on View Tree Mountain. The dam had been rebuilt, but a leak had developed at one end of the dam, and the gravityflow of the water was minimal. That problem, plus the fact that the region was in the grips of a fall drought, created a “perfect storm.” The fire spread from the livery stable to the adjoining buildings, with flames raging up Ashby Street toward Waterloo Street, Court House Square, and Winchester Street. The next structure to ignite was the adjacent Ullman stable, followed by W. A. Garner’s skating rink. Soon the Farmers’ Hotel at the corner of Main and Ashby streets was threatened. Across Ashby Street, the Warren Green Hotel annex was being hit by windblown, burning embers, and the stone walls of the county jail began to heat up. Blown by the wind, the fire spread across Court House Square to Winchester Street. Across from the Farmer’s Hotel, the almost-new Warrenton Municipal Building was soon ablaze. Many more men rushed to town to help, including a detachment of cadets from Bethel Military Academy who marched in double-quick. But without water there seemed to be little they could do. Frustrated, the firemen dropped their hoses and took buckets from stores and dwellings to form bucket brigades,

Looking east toward Main Street before the fire, Carter Hall is seen on the left, and residences and a boarding house on the right side of the street.

Devastation of the west end of Warrenton was complete. Only the shell of Carter Hall and the chimney of Britton Hall still stand after the fire burned out.

using sand and water pumped from wells. But there was no stopping the flames. Chaos reigned as burning debris blown by the wind fell everywhere. Fearing for his inmates’ safety, the county jailor released eight prisoners without handcuffs or manacles from the jail, and moved them to safety. None tried to escape.

IRVIN GARRETT REMEMBERS

Irvin Garrett was four and a half years old at the time of the fire, and in an interview with the Fauquier Historical Society more than 70 years later, he recalled many details. It was after dark, and Irvin and his sister Esther were at home on Waterloo Street with their aunt, Hattie Burgess Cropp, while their mother Lelia Garrett was at the revival at the Methodist Church. When it was apparent that a huge fire was happening nearby, their Aunt told the children to go up to bed, but instead, they hid under the dining room table. “This turned out to be very fortunate for us,” Garrett recalled. The fire soon spread to the roof of the house, and they ran outside. “How my aunt, my sister and I became separated, I do not know… but Esther took off by herself to find our mother at the church,” Garrett recalled. “I remember watching tar paper roofing, on fire, being blown through the air and igniting everything on which it lit. I also remember the dozen or so horses from the livery stable stampeding through the Square.” “I ran across the street approximately at the location where the John Barton Payne Building stands to the area in front of the Old Jail. From there, Mrs. Addison Weeks led me to safety at the home of Mr. Ernest Ash.”

DYNAMITE

Having exhausted all other firefighting means, it was decided that the only way to stop the flames was to create fire breaks by dynamiting the structures immediately in the line of the fire. Firemen secured a 500-lb. cache of explosives from Paul C. Richards, the contractor building the new road to Bethel, and they began containing the flames by flattening the buildings in the way, creating fire breaks. One of the first buildings to be demolished was the 2-story Warren Green Hotel Annex, creating a break that saved the main part of the hotel and the businesses on Culpeper Street. The report published Nov. 24, 1909 in the Baltimore Sun recounted the heroic actions of C.C. Waugh, “…a strapping worker in the construction department under Mr. Richards,” who was credited with stopping

the spread of the blaze by blowing up Mrs. H.A. Parker's house with 50 pounds of dynamite before the fire reached it. “If Waugh worked quickly enough, he knew he could save the eastern and business sections of the town. He set the pasteboard boxes of dynamite inside the cellar, and then looked about his pockets for a fuse. “He had none, but knew that if he went for a fuse he would not have time to come back because the house would be off. He knew that if he had the fuse at that minute, the house would be down before the fire reached there, and the flames could not leap the breach. “Unhesitatingly, he wrapped a bunch of newspapers tightly in his fingers and set a match to them. Glancing at the cellar door and gauging the distance, he leaned over, cat-like, and threw the blazing papers at the dynamite. He figured that it would take several seconds for the flames to eat inside the pasteboard, and he took a chance that those two seconds would give him his life.

}

As he jumped out of the cellar and darted across the street, the flying debris of the house, following a terrific detonation, fell about him, and he was thrown 20 feet across the road. He scrambled to his feet unhurt.”

ACTS OF BRAVERY

There were other acts of bravery. Charles Marshall grabbed a fire extinguisher and climbed to the roof of the Post Office at the corner of Main Street and Alexandria Pike. Every time an ember landed on the roof, he put it out. “At her home on Waterloo Street, a woman was in bed with her two-day-old infant beside her,” according to the story in the Baltimore Sun. “The fire had started to eat its way up the back porch. The cry rang out around the burnt district until it was heard above the roar of the flames, ‘A woman is in danger!’ A dozen men rushed to the house, emerging a moment later carrying the mother in their arms, and a giant

View from Ashby Street, where the fire started, shows the extent of the destruction. Buildings on Waterloo Street and Courthouse Square were lost, but through heroic efforts, the Courthouse and county jail were spared.

Warrentonian bore the babe with careful tread behind.” On Winchester Street, the home of Dr. Carter was aflame, and the fire spread across the street to Capt. Edward Carter’s house, Carter Hall. Several boarders lived there, and they tried to save what possessions they could by throwing them out the windows, where the Bethel cadets moved them to safety. By 11:30 a.m. the next day, it appeared that the fire was burning itself out, and in light of the danger and extreme efforts, no one was killed, and injuries were minor. But the damage to the west end of Warrenton was extensive, and 14 families were left homeless. No fewer than 26 buildings were lost, including the new Municipal Building, the skating rink, the Five Points Building and the Farmers’ Hotel. Fortunately, the books owned by the Warrenton Library Association that were stored in the hotel were removed by volunteers to the California Building before the fire consumed the building. Remarkably, the old Moses Hall on Waterloo Street was spared while adjacent buildings were lost. The total damage estimate was $125,000, with about $80,000 covered by insurance. Damage to Carter Hall was set at $10,000, while the relatively new Town Hall was valued at only $2,500. The T.E. Pattie general store on Winchester Street and all of its contents were lost, valued at $12,000. The greatest single loss was the studio of artist Richard Norris Brooke. While the building was only valued at $2,000, value

of the paintings lost in the fire was set at $25,000, and only partially insured. Another significant loss was the small building on Waterloo Street that housed Chief Justice John Marshall’s law office from 1788 to 1780. While some blame was placed on the Town Council for not having the leak in the reservoir fixed before the fire, most understood that the extent of the disaster was unavoidable, and could have been much worse. A number of new ordinances were enacted, including forbidding smoking in or near any public or private stables. Fire lines within which frame structures could not be built were established, and the possibility of adding a chemical firefighting engine was explored. A small shed in which to store the town's firefighting equipment was built on the site of the burned Municipal Building, and a new Town Hall at Main and Fourth streets was remodeled with offices upstairs and fire department on the ground level, an arrangement that would work for many years. “We will have a newer and a better Warrenton,” wrote Capt. Fielding L. Poindexter, editor of the Warrenton Virginian. “The spirit of our town will assert itself as it did in Baltimore, and we will rebuild upon the ashes.”

WARRENTON REBUILDS, PREPARES

The buildings may have been lost, but the prime locations remained, and over the next few years, new structures did “rise from the ashes.” The Warrenton Supply Co.,

incorporated in December 1913, was built on the site of the livery stable and skating rink, and was soon selling Studebaker, EMF and Allen & Stanley Steamer automobiles. A new Municipal Building, also known as “The Opera House,” was erected on Courthouse Square, along with new retail stores. The Warren Green annex was rebuilt, and although it was severely damaged, the brick walls of Carter Hall were still sound and the historic home was rebuilt. Across Winchester Street, homes and the new Warrenton Methodist Church rose from the ashes. The town council purchased its first piece of motor-driven firefighting apparatus in 1921, a Chevrolet truck equipped with a 50-gallon chemical tank and a hose carriage costing $2,815. William G. Bartenstein was appointed chief by the town council in 1922, and in 1924, Chief Bartenstein, B. H. Smith, Alex Hamilton, Alwyn Ash, Lester Burke and Irvin Garrett, then 19 years old, met to discuss organization of a fire department. Young men of the town responded enthusiastically to the invitation to join. The fire department was given space on the ground floor of the Town Hall in space used to store a steamroller, and after much work, it was made usable for the firemen. The fire alarm was a steam whistle located down the hill at the Warrenton Electric and Ice Company owned by M.J. O’Connell. The plant operators sounded the alarm – a

short blast for a fire in town, a long blast for out of town. On Dec. 3, 1924, the formal organizational meeting was held, with Mayor Thomas E. Frank presiding. W. G. Bartenstein was

formally elected chief, A.S. Hamilton first lieutenant, Alwyn Ash second lieutenant, Lester Burke, president, Irvin Garrett secretary-treasurer, and C.C. Burke official truck driver.

Members paid dues of 10 cents a month, or $1 per year. Regular drills were held, and soon they were able to demonstrate their expert hose work to the town council. The infant fire company’s first fundraising effort was a minstrel show, directed by Alex Hamilton. It was held on May 20, 1925 on the stage of the movie theater operated by Mrs. Washington on Courthouse Square. About $400 was realized, and the money was applied to payments on a Seagraves 350-gallon pumper the town council had purchased. In the early days, the firemen fought fires with no protective gear, except what could be improvised. When Fielding’s Flour Mill at the railroad depot caught fire in the early morning of June 25, 1925, firemen used metal highway signs to shield themselves from the intense heat as they fought the blaze. The roof of the depot was damaged, but firemen prevented the blaze from spreading to nearby buildings. Until other communities started their own fire departments, Warrenton was the only firefighting unit in the county, and they answered alarms from one end of Fauquier to the other. ❖

Don’t know what to serve for dinner? Need something fast that everyone will eat? Pasta is the original, toss-together, comfort and convenience food that gets dinner on the table in no time flat. It’s quick. It’s easy. Everyone loves it and no one ever complains that you serve it too often. What could be better than that? Pasta comes in a never ending variety of fun and yummy that is so irresistible it should be its own food group. Spaghetti, lo mein, haluski, pasticcio, mac and cheese, pasta is a staple in every kitchen around the world. Dress it up. Dress it down. Make it into a salad. Serve it hot. Serve it cold. Serve it by itself or add it to a recipe. Pasta can take center stage at a fancy dinner party or be a budget-friendly family meal that uses up a fridge full of leftovers. When you need dinner on the table fast or don’t know what to make, just grab a box of pasta and start cooking. Pasta. It’s what’s for dinner. Here’s a pot full of ideas for quick pasta entrees. They are all very freeform so exact ingredient amounts are not necessary. Use what you have on hand or what you like in amounts that work for you. Improvise. Vary the vegetables. Use different pasta shapes. Toss in leftover meat, fish or poultry, bits of vegetables. You can’t go wrong with pasta!

1. In a large skillet, whisk together coconut milk, broth, garlic, and soy sauce. 2. Stir in the uncooked spaghetti and mushrooms. 3. Cook at a gentle boil until the pasta is done and sauce is reduced to the thickness you like – about 10 minutes. 4. Remove from heat. Stir in parsley. Serve. COOK’S TIP: Use regular white spaghetti instead of whole wheat, if you prefer. Thicker spaghetti may require longer cooking. Add additional broth, if needed. Some specialty spaghetti, especially gluten free, may disintegrate so cook them separately according to the package directions then fold them into the cooked sauce for serving.

TOP: An admitted Francophile, Laely honors the centuries old tradition of producing an aciditydriven, yet still mouth-filling chardonnay. LEFT: Wine writer and expert Mark Luna with Laely Heron at a tasting of Heron Wines at Red’s Table in Reston.

the Institute of Enology, in Bordeaux…she would never look back. Moving to and from both San Francisco and Denmark for various wine industry positions, including becoming the first American employee of the Australian giant Lindeman’s, would set the stage for Heron Wines, launched from San Francisco in 1995. For Laely, in her winemaking philosophy and the wines themselves, what remains firm is that both be direct reflections of her spirit – pioneering, adventurous, daring, smart, adaptable, thrill seeking, irreverent, nontraditional and international. It was my good fortune to sell Heron’s wines during my retail days in Nashville and it remains my good fortune to rep them today in Northern Virginia. There’s a gypsy spirit to these offerings, all the while capturing time-honored traditions of everclassic varieties. No singular white wine grape epitomizes the California experience better than chardonnay, and the Heron Chardonnay Mendocino County 2018 offers the proof of truth. An intensely fragrant wine, with nectarine, tangerine blossom and subtle notes of pear, this Potter Valley classic will enthrall the palate with golden apple, stony peach accents and river rock. that produce this elegant wine average 16 years of age, bridging the gap between youthfulness and maturity. This wine is vinified in stainless steel, sees no malo-lactic fermentation nor oak, yet has extended contact on its lees. An admitted Francophile, Laely honors the centuries old tradition of producing an acidity-driven, yet still mouthfilling chardonnay. And as it does in France, chardonnay from California remains that rare grape that can cover both grounds at once. Priced around $18, it’s beyond a great value. Equally inspired by Burgundian ancestry, the 2018 Heron Pinot Noir California plays red wine brother to its chardonnay sister. Sourced from the diverse lands of Monterey, western Paso Robles and the famed Russian River, this 100% PN is an elegant composition of sustainably farmed grapes from several of California’s cool, marine influenced microclimates. An artful combination of both Wadenswill and Pommard clones offers up a palate wheel’s worth of fruit and earth, with crushed raspberries, violets and warm baking spices complementing earthy, mineral notes. Pomegranate, cherry and cranberry drive the palate to a finish line that is fresh and seductive, offering hints of exotic spice. The complexity comes from the blending

of sites and terroir, unifying the one single grape, pinot noir. Twelve months well spent in French oak barrels completes the process before bottle ageing. It’s the best $20 California pinot noir I recommend. While on your way to cabernet, it’s always good to hit the offramp for a relaxed visit with merlot, truly one of the smoothest red grapes around. Laely delivers strong here with her 2017 Heron Merlot California. Yet another Heron bottling that is smartly sourced from the best fields -- this time Rutherford, Pope Valley and again, Mendocino – this multi-appellation beauty offers soft tannin, dark plum color and intense black and red fruit. Ripe black cherry, fragrant lavender and violet, along with black olive, rich dark chocolate, exotic spices and wild herbs all announce themselves throughout the sniffing and tasting experience, and not necessarily in that order. There’s a great arc to this wine, supple at the beginning and silky at the end. Also aged for 12 months in French oak, this wine holds a very special place in Laely’s heart, as merlot was the very first wine she released when she started Heron Wines twenty-five years ago, and was the first grape she learned to vinify when studying winemaking back at the Institute of Enology…there’s something to be said about staying true to your first love, at least in some form or fashion. And finally, Laely holds nothing back with her 2018 Heron Cabernet Sauvignon California. Out of the gate, it flies into its own orbit, with spice, dried herb, deep plum, and dark cherry aromatics. A hint of warm vanilla speaks to its hint of oak. Ripe and lush black fruit, with candied red fruit and mocha reflect the cabernet’s cool climate leanings, with 50% Mendocino, 30% Pope Valley, and 20% Clarksburg fruit making up its composition. Color, finesse, structure and weight are all present, in a uniformed balance that can’t be beat. As Laely will tell you, “Cabernet Sauvignon is a balancing act, with the fruit, tannins, alcohol and freshness in harmony. This is not a ‘huge’ wine, as my goal with cabernet sauvignon is always elegance and balance, respecting the varietal for what it truly brings to the table.” It’s a wine worth having at your table, especially for the $20 price tag. So, in saying goodbye to the confines of winter, treat yourself to a wine-journey to the sunny west coast and experience the wines of Laely Heron…it’ll be a trip well worth it. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖
