really had no idea that April was such a busy month! April is autism awareness month, alcohol awareness month, and child abuse awareness month, and we’ve managed to get them all in this issue. As some of you may know, Rappahannock Media, owner of Warrenton Lifestyle, has purchased FauquierNow as of January of this year. One of my big projects is to work with both and build the county’s most comprehensive calendar of events. We invite you all to contribute to this online calendar-there is no charge. If you or your organization, school, winery, theater, or nonprofit is having an event that’s open to the public, we want to help you get the word out, so be sure it’s on our calendar for everyone to see. Submit your events by going to fauquiernow.com/fauquier_calendar and click “create an event”. Please be sure to submit a good photo and 5-6 sentences about the event, and it may be featured in our Thursday Best Bets newsletter.

happy with simple 10/10/10 fertilizer. The numbers mean that it has 10 percent nitrogen, 10 percent phosphorus and 10 percent potassium. But it all depends on what your soil needs for a healthy nutrient content. Getting a good soil test first will help you determine what the soil needs.

Should I be careful using store-bought fertilizers in my organic garden?

Fertilizing Your Garden I

Above: Jim Hankins, executive director of the Fauquier Education Farm, located at 8428 Meetze Road in Warrenton. The Fauquier Education Farm offers agriculture-related education through demonstrations, classroom instruction, on-farm workshops, and hands-on learning. The farm also supports the community by contributing all of its agricultural products to local food banks and by providing volunteer opportunities. Learn more at fauquier educationfarm.org

n this ongoing series, we hope to help current gardeners as well as inspire beginners to start. Fauquier County has so many resources to support gardeners, and a lot of people with a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Jim Hankins, executive director of the Fauquier Education Farm, is our local expert, and he is answering questions from our readers.

I amend my soil with compost when planting, does that cover all my bases? Do I still need to fertilize throughout the season? Compost can vary greatly in the actual amount of nutrient content, depending on the source and what went into it. You can send a sample to Virginia Tech, just like a soil sample if you want to know just how much benefit you're getting. You will always need a much larger volume of compost as opposed to chemical fertilizer. However, one great thing about fully mature compost is that you can add it at any time of the year. If your plants are struggling to look healthy then testing the soil is always the best place to start.

8 Warrenton Lifestyle

APRIL 2022

How do I know when to fertilize? What does the FEF do? The Education Farm gets most of our nutrients from our rotation of cover crops, but we do use 10/10/10 before planting some crops. We try to think about long term soil health, and so take every opportunity to feed our soil with organic matter from the cover crops and crop debris, but we only add chemical fertilizers before planting.

The garden store has different fertilizers for different kinds of plants, is this really necessary? Or does a generic fertilizer like miracle grow suffice? Most vegetable gardens will be perfectly

By definition an organic garden doesn't use most chemical fertilizers. There are products available in the stores that are listed as organic but many of them are not really beneficial. There's one called Chicka Di Do Do that's made from chicken manure, but if you read the label carefully you will see that the nutrient content is 2/1/1, which means you'll need to add ten times as much to get the same benefit as 10/10/10. There are good organic fertilizers, like bone meal and fish emulsion, just read the labels carefully and follow directions.

I got a soil test, but the results are kind of confusing?

The best soil test you can get will be from Virginia Tech and the Master Gardener Help Desk at the Fauquier Cooperative Extension. These cost $10 per sample for home gardeners and are free for commercial farmers. Not only are the results dependable but the Master Gardener Help Desk is available to help you understand how to take the sample and decode the results when they come back within a week or so. I'm sure if you take your test results back to the co-op they will help explain it, but Virginia Tech and the Master Gardeners are a very trustworthy source of information.

Any other fertilizing tips or tricks?

The biggest tip is to stop just guessing what your garden needs. Get a good quality soil test and follow the recommendations. Your garden will be happier if you never miss a chance to add more organic matter, so never skip a chance to feed your soil. w Have a vegetable gardening question for Jim? Send it to editor@warrentonlifestyle.com and it might be answered in our next issue.

Deputy Chief of Police

Major Timothy Carter STORY AND PHOTO BY LINDSAY HOGEBOOM

“M

y wife and I…[have] lived in Fauquier County all our lives,” says Major Timothy Carter, deputy chief of police for the Warrenton Police Department. “I went to Fauquier County High School when it was the only high school.” After graduating high school, Carter enrolled in George Mason University, where he embarked on an educational journey to become an accountant. During college, Carter spoke with a career counselor who directed him to career-finding manuals and aptitude tests. “Everything kept saying, ‘Well, you can do lots of different things — you’re very adaptable.’ But it said, ‘You like working with people [and] you like helping.’” These results did not lead Carter straight to his career in law enforcement. Rather, a chance conversation with a friend’s mother — who was the administrative assistant to the chief of police at the time, Dale Koglin — led him to the doors of the Warrenton Police Department. “She said, ‘What are you doing these days?’ and I said, ‘Well, I’m working security for a private school, but I’m looking for something else, I just don’t know what I’m going to do,’” explains Carter. “And she said, ‘Did you ever think about being a police officer?’” Carter hadn’t considered it but was intrigued by the idea. He applied and subsequently was called in for an interview. “I still remember that like it was yesterday, sitting across the desk from [Koglin], scared out of my mind. And next thing I knew I was a police officer…. It’s one of those things where you don’t know until you know. And I didn’t know, but once I got in it, I couldn’t think of anything else.” This year, June fourth will mark three decades of service to the town of Warrenton for Carter. Cultivating the Department’s Culture As deputy chief of police, “my day is very diverse,” says Carter. “My job is to make sure everything runs smoothly…. I have my two lieutenants who handle what we call ‘both sides of the house,’ so to speak — they handle the different divisions. I work

10 Warrenton Lifestyle

APRIL 2022

What’s more, Carter explains this is not only healthier for the officers, but also better for the community. “We’re no good to the community if we don’t take care of ourselves, because what ends up happening... is you put everything into the job, and as you do that you slowly lose…all the stuff that makes you who you are, so that then one day all you have is the job. You don’t have those things that balance you,” he says. “Unfortunately, we see a part of the world that no one should have to see, but someone has got to do it. But it’s our significant other, it’s our kids, it’s our friends [that] live in the real world. [These are] our anchor[s] that, when we have a bad day, we can go, ‘Okay, I need to center myself back into reality. This is where everybody else lives, and this is what I am doing this job for.’”

Off the Clock through them to make sure that everything that needs to happen, happens.” According to Carter, this can include anything from budgeting and procurement to sitting in meetings to going out and working within the community and more. However, Carter says his favorite part of the job is his ability to help and mentor the next generation of officers, not only with career development, but also to ensure they have a healthy work-life balance. “Back when I was coming up, it was like, ‘You’re a police officer so it’s everything for the job. If you have to sacrifice, you have to — that’s just the way it is,” he says. “The officers who are coming in now, they are more about, ‘I will sacrifice when I have to, but if I don’t have to, I’m not going to.’ And those of us who have been doing this a long time, at first glance when you hear that you’re like, ‘Whoa, that’s not what we do, that’s not what this job’s about.’ But then when you stop and think about it, you’re like, ‘No, actually, that’s how you keep families together…that’s how you look back on a career at the end of it and go, ‘I'm very happy with how my life went and my career.’”

When Carter isn’t checking in with his lieutenants, sitting in a meeting, or out in the community, you can find him spending time with his wife and his 15-year-old daughter, who is a competitive swimmer. “One of the things I enjoy doing is watching my daughter pursue her passion,” he says. And, Carter says, his family has an affectionate nickname for him: Tim the Tinkerer. “I have an addiction to fixing things,” he says. “We’re in a house that we’ve been in for 15 years now, and every appliance in our house has broken at some point in time and I’ve fixed every single one of them.” Carter also spends time with his family on road trips in pursuit of information for a genealogy project he is working on. “I am trying very hard to get as much information as I can and go back as far as I can on both sides of my family,” he says. “I think it’s very important. I tell myself I'm doing it for myself, but I really feel like I'm doing it more for my daughter.” These are just some of the ways Carter practices what he preaches to the new generation of officers about maintaining a healthy work-life balance. “These are the things that keep me centered,” he says. w

icture a night out on the Main Street of your favorite small town in your most treasured vacation destination. What do you see and hear? A live band? A group of friends clinking glasses at an outdoor dining table? Kids giggling while getting their faces painted? A refined, relaxed art gallery? These features give your favorite spot an atmosphere you love. The most important feature of all is that whenever you go, Summer after Summer, night after night, you know that atmosphere will be there for you and your family. It is that consistency which makes Chincoteague, Rams Head, or Williamsburg so special. The pandemic which took so much from us now gives Warrenton the chance to redefine the kind of town we want to be for residents and visitors alike. 2022 will bring vitality and consistency to Old Town, with the “RollOutWarrenton!” street closures that begin Friday at 4:30, and continue until Sunday morning each weekend of the season. Starting just after Easter, this major change from 2021 means that

12 Warrenton Lifestyle

visitors and residents will be able to expect a safe, pedestrian walking mall all weekend long. This change will bring another major attraction to Main Street, with the Warrenton Farmers Market moving to a new location stretching from Culpeper Street to 3rd Street. The change will give market vendors unprecedented exposure and bring life to Main Street on Saturday mornings throughout the year. It’s important to note that these changes are experimental. As we find our way in the post-pandemic world, Experience Old Town Warrenton and the Town will need to call on the same creativity that helped put Warrenton on the map during the pandemic. We will expand on the ideas that are working, while cutting the chaff. To do that, we’ll need your help and your counsel. Send your feedback to director@oldtownwarrenton.org, and together we will build a town that attracts new residents and visitors while supporting our small businesses. w

Spring Cleaning: Computer Care Tips BY KLAUS FUECHSEL

following steps: a) unplug the power adapter. b) shut it down all the way immediately. c) take out the battery, if it is the kind that can be popped out easily. d) open the lid as far as possible and put the laptop upside down on a table and towel, so gravity prevents the liquid from seeping deeper into the laptop, especially under the keyboard. But don’t shake it. e) don’t turn the laptop back on, even if it’s beginning to look dry. Bring it to a computer repair store ASAP. They will disassemble the whole system, try to save your hard drive, salvage as much as possible, and replace parts as needed. Please don’t drop your laptop! Besides cracking the screen, this may damage the hard drive.

Maintaining your Desktop

W

hether you own a desktop computer or a laptop, your computer probably has most of your work and personal life on it. It’s important to care for them and clean them regularly so they don’t quit on you! Here are some tips from my techs and I to keep your computer in tiptop shape.

Keep your Laptop in Top Shape Always open the lid from the middle, not the side; its hinges will thank you by lasting much longer. When you close your computer, don’t slam the lid. Don’t keep your laptop always plugged into the power outlet. The battery needs its workout by charging and draining its power, otherwise it won’t last its proper life. It is best to let a laptop work off its battery for several hours and wait until it’s getting close

to empty before plugging it in to recharge. Don’t yank the power cord out, and be careful where you place it. Once in a while, we get power cords that have been chewed through by dogs, which is dangerous. Heat is bad for all electronics. If the CPU gets too hot, the computer will shut down, reboot, or misbehave. At least once a month we get a system in which the fan is clogged with dust and/ or pet hair. To prevent this, the laptop should be used in a relatively dust free environment and away from pets. Wipe down the table where you put the laptop. And don’t use it on soft surfaces, such as your lap. This blocks the air from circulating heat out of the laptop. Almost the worst thing you could do is spill your mocha latte on the keyboard. We have seen lots of drunk laptops damaged by coke, coffee, soapy water, and more. If any liquid lands on a laptop, I recommend the

If you use your desktop as a “deskunder,” do make sure you vacuum around it frequently! I have seen pets enjoying themselves close to a warm tower or sleeping on top of it. We’ve found all kinds of stuff in desktops, from cobwebs and dust bunnies to stink bugs. Don’t drink near your desktop, either. If you happen to spill liquid on your keyboard, I recommend pushing the power button on the desktop so it shuts down, and then disconnect the keyboard cable from the tower (if it is wired in). Put the keyboard upside down on a towel to dry. Don’t try the keyboard until you are sure it is totally dry. Honestly, since a keyboard is not very expensive, I would just buy a new one and throw the spill damaged one away. Do clean your keyboard from time to time. Creating Healthy Lifestyles for Fauquier Children By Kristin McAuliffe, FRESH

at healthier. Move more. Find time to read. Adults prioritize these goals often, recognizing the positive impact they have on health and wellbeing. One program in Fauquier is helping children experience the benefits of these choices in hopes of instilling a lifetime of healthy habits. Fauquier Reaches for Excellence in School Health (better known as “FRESH”) is a Fauquier County Public School program funded by the PATH Foundation. FRESH’s mission is to inspire and promote healthy lifestyle choices through nutrition, movement, and literacy enrichment. Three program areas – FRESH Eats, FRESH Moves, and FRESH Reads – help us achieve this mission. We want children to recognize that eating healthy, exercising, and reading can be lots of fun while also making our minds and bodies feel great.

tastings. The food item is prepared as a recipe and children are offered samples during lunch. Tastings are a great way for students to become familiar with the recipes before they are offered as cafeteria menu options. The kids really enjoy encouraging one another to try new things. They often surprise themselves and end up liking something they thought they wouldn’t.

FRESH Eats

FRESH Reads

This program exposes children to the benefits of healthy food choices. Each month, we feature a “Harvest of the Month” food item. In October it was apples. In January, sweet potatoes. Not only are children taught the health benefits of the month’s featured food, but FRESH visits school cafeterias and hosts

FRESH Moves FRESH Moves is all about developing creative ways for students to move more throughout the school day. We partner with teachers and families to provide equipment, create active learning lessons that incorporate fun items like scarves, dice, and sidewalk chalk, and install sensory paths in schools. We are also piloting calming and refocusing lessons that help students regain focus after more high-energy moments. FRESH Reads prioritizes increased literacy opportunities for children and their families. We provide each elementary school and public library with a book of the month to read and discuss with students. We have also partnered with the PATH Foundation and Fauquier Public Library to bring a Story-

Walk® to Brumfield Elementary, allowing families to read a new book each month by following signposts along a walking path. FRESH Reads is probably most popular for the free books offered at all of our community events. We have something for readers of all ages, from board books to chapter books.

Not only for children

FRESH strives for excellence in health for all in Fauquier schools. The wellbeing of our school teachers, administrators, and staff are vital components of a healthy school system. FRESH has recently begun piloting a new wellness portal for school and county staff. It is our hope that this platform will provide an engaging way for school and county personnel to practice the self-care they deserve during these challenging times.

Out in the community

Our “FRESH on Wheels” vans bring FRESH Eats, FRESH Moves, and FRESH Reads programming to children across the county. Community events are our favorite way to engage with children and their families. Look for us the first Saturday of every month at the Warrenton Farmers Market for Kids Day.

Every Kid Healthy

On Friday, April 29 from 5-6:30 pm we will join forces with a number of community partners to host an “Every Kid Healthy” event at Brumfield Elementary. The event is open to the public and will feature free food and books as well as many different movement activities for children. This summer FRESH will also host numerous community events in Marshall, Bealeton, and Warrenton. w Check out www.fauquierfresh.org/community-events for more information about upcoming FRESH on Wheels events, and visit www.fauquierfresh.org to sign up for FRESH’s monthly newsletter and stay ‘reFRESHed’ all year long.

Give Blood, Give Life

Monthly Blood Drives at Fauquier Health Now that Fauquier Health has been able to loosen pandemic restrictions, they are back to hosting monthly blood drives. Appointments are required and community members can visit redcrossblood.org and follow these steps:

Critical shortages are happening right now

Type in your zip code in the top right corner to find a drive near you and make your appointment to donate.

onating blood is one of the easiest ways to help others survive traumas, have access to the operations they need, and save lives when their own bodies cannot produce enough to sustain them. It’s simply a matter of making an appointment, visiting a blood bank or blood drive, and receiving a quick and tiny prick in the arm. Then, just lay back and relax. Now, it’s more important than ever to give. According to the Red Cross, there always seems to be a blood shortage, not just here but everywhere, but it’s been more extreme now than in the past. This is partly due to COVID eliminating many potential donors, as well as staffing shortages to host the drives. Yet, the need for blood remains constant. “I've never seen a shortage like this,” says Dr. Lynn Samuel, pathologist and Fauquier Health Wound Healing Center medical director. “It's been so severe and there was a point where our usual inventory was significantly diminished.” Plasma and platelets are also needed. “I know the platelets we've been getting have been very short dated, so we get them in and

Under the ‘Donate Blood’ tab, find “What to Do Before, During, and After Your Donation” to ensure you are prepared for your appointment and have a lower risk of deferral. The next drives will take place on Tuesday, April 5th, Friday; May 13th; Friday, June 3rd; Friday, October 21st, and Friday, November 25th.

they sometimes can expire that day,” says laboratory administrative director at Fauquier Health, Kelly Yoder. “Samuel Mukasa, a clinical blood bank specialist, told me that in his 30 years of blood banking experience, this is the lowest point he's ever seen.” This has also led to a limit on elective surgeries. Donations are used for a multitude of reasons in addition to operations and injuries. “A patient may have a chronic anemia problem, or another may need platelets because his own body isn’t able to make them or has been consuming them at a rapid rate.” Warrenton resident and business owner Dave Russell is one of these patients, and he has been severely affected by the shortage of blood. “He has multiple myeloma, cancer of the blood marrow,” says his wife, Angie. “In the month of December alone, Dave received eight units of blood, and during this last week in the hospital [in March], he has had at least that, plus another eight or so units of platelets.” She says there have been times when there just wasn’t any blood available to give him, which has had significant negative impacts on his health. “And it’s not just Dave - how many other people need blood that they just can’t have?” says Angie. “I don’t think people realize that there is a blood shortage. They’re

thinking, ‘Well we’re not in a war,’ or ‘No big catastrophes have happened.’ That’s when people think it’s the time to give.” She encourages people to donate now and donate as often as they can, because blood is needed all the time. “It’s scary to hear ‘Sorry, Mr. Russell, but we’re not able to do your transfusion because we don’t have any blood,’” she says. “He needs blood to sustain his body and platelets to prevent bleeding.” “Since everyone can accept O negative blood, which is the universal donor type, that's our go-to for an emergency, and that was the blood type that was particularly short during this recent crisis,” says Dr. Samuel. The Red Cross is quick and efficient and tries to get donors in and out as fast as possible, and Rapid Pass helps the process go ever faster. “I used it the last time I donated and it saved a lot of time,” says Yoder. People aged 16 and up, who are in good health and weigh at least 110 pounds, can donate blood every 56 days, or up to 6 times a year. Platelets can be donated every 7 days, or up to 24 times per year. So, take the time to schedule an appointment and donate. You’ll be helping patients like Dave and many others, and you never know when you or one of your family members will also benefit from this selfless act. w

When Drinking Crosses the Line April is Alcohol Awareness Month BY MICHELLE KELLEY, LCSW

A

lcohol, a powerful, mood-altering substance which acts as a depressant on the central nervous system, has been part of human society since the beginning of civilization. In our culture, drinking has become synonymous with good times and celebrations. Social media plays an instrumental role in normalizing excessive drinking. Our youth, especially college students, experience higher levels of social pressure to drink. Alcohol consumption on college campuses is more common and destructive than most people realize. Unfortunately, it is considered a rite of passage for many college students to drink, and drink heavily. This toxic and dangerous drinking culture has been swept under the rug far too long. Since the start of the pandemic, the use of it has increased as people battle isolation and stress. Lori McCarthy, executive director of the Herren Wellness Recovery Center in Warrenton, says, “The pandemic exposed the use and misuse of alcohol. Young adults and college students were the first group to surface with substance struggles. Dads were next, followed by moms.” Pandemic or no, alcohol can be a source of problems in people’s lives, whether it’s too much social drinking or a more involved situation.

Recognizing a problem

It can be difficult to understand the difference between problem drinking and alcoholism. Alcoholism implies a physical chemical dependency on the substance in addition to negatively affecting health

20 Warrenton Lifestyle

and relationships. On the other hand, problem drinkers are not physically dependent, so can go days, weeks, or months without consuming any alcohol. But when they do turn to the bottle, they may engage in binge drinking, potentially harming their professional and personal relationships. There are various types of problematic drinking. Someone may experience periods of controlled drinking where they perform their duties regularly or they may engage in excessive, out-of-control drinking. It is easier to identify a problem drinker when their behavior is extreme or alarming. Dangerous acts such as driving intoxicated or manifesting rageful outbursts are not uncommon. However, it is possible for someone to be a problem drinker and maintain a pleasant and calm demeanor. High functioning alcoholics or problem drinkers may not appear to need assistance. A “functional alcoholic” or “high-functioning alcoholic” is not a formal diagnosis. It’s a commonly used term describing a person who is dependent on alcohol but functions in society by completing daily tasks and keeping commitments. With these individuals, loved ones often grow confused about accurately identifying a problem and contemplate how to express their concerns to the functioning alcoholic.

Support and education

Many of my clients benefit from learning how to manage their relationship with a problem drinker by learning about codependency and enabling behaviors, along with the benefits of obtaining support and the right education. Remember, alcoholics and problem drinkers can be deep in denial, yet skilled at the art of manipulation. It’s imperative that we address alcohol use, abuse, and responsible drinking with our children. More important-

ly, parents must role model a healthy relationship with alcohol, which includes having open and honest conversations consistently about alcohol. Rather than shield my children (now adults) from the drinking culture, I sought opportunities to discuss with them what they were noticing in other people’s relationships with alcohol. It is a relationship which can be either healthy or destructive. Our community has an amazing resource for individuals and families who are struggling, the Herren Wellness Recovery Center at Twin Oaks. Their mission is to provide holistic wellness recovery services to enable personal growth and transformation. Lori McCarthy, executive director, emphasizes the importance of using an integrative wellness model which includes life coaching, therapy, nutrition, fitness, support groups and family support. The Herren Project, a related entity, offers free and confidential online support for individuals and family members. Their hope is for individuals to seek help at the beginning of their struggle and not wait until their life spirals downward. If you think your drinking is out of control or creating negative consequences that disrupt your life, contact a health professional. If you are concerned about a loved one who may have a drinking problem, there are things you can do to help, but start by getting help for yourself. It’s never too soon or too late to get help. w Michelle Kelley is a licensed counselor, life coach and owner of Warrenton Women’s Counseling Center educating and empowering girls, women and couples. 9ology, Charlotte Wagner Harvey’s dog training business, has been operating in the area since 2004. Charlotte and her full-time employee Melissa Gibson specialize in all obedience training including AKC certification, puppies, tricks training, therapy dogs, hunting dogs, service dogs, and canine sports such as agility and rally. The amazing thing is that, apart from renting facilities briefly here and there over the years, K9ology has accomplished this huge operation from the road. Without a home base, Charlotte and Melissa hold their classes in a variety of locations in the area: a rented room at Hungry Like the Woof, Spillman Park, Rady Park, Old Town Warrenton, the Greenway, and a local farm which lets them hold their agility classes in their indoor arena. The difficulties of operating this way are many, but Charlotte has persevered. Equipment must be moved between locations, and much time that could be used for training is spent driving to their various locations. “We work crazy long hours. I’m working 10 hour days, but only seeing four or five appointments a day, and it's slowly

killing me,” Charlotte says. Charlotte’s energy and passion for her business have carried her through the years, until COVID hit, and she came to a realization. ”There was a split second during COVID when I thought, “Am I going to throw in the towel?” It was just a tiny split second of doubt, and the very next second I thought, “Oh no, I can’t do that. That’s ridiculous.” But it started me thinking, do I do this forever on the road?” After her split second of doubt, Charlotte decided to make some changes. “I’d already played with the idea of expanding, and I decided to just go for it. This is my calling, my purpose, my passion, what I’m supposed to be doing. So I’ll be doing this probably till the day I die.” “I spent the last two years paying off debt, and brought on Melissa as a salaried full time employee, which is a big step for me as a small business owner. I decided to go really big. So that’s when I got really serious about doing research and

Dog agility is a dog sport in which a handler directs a dog through an obstacle course in a race for both time and accuracy. • Rally, or Rally-O is a dog sport based on obedience where competitors proceed around a course of designated stations, each requiring an obedience command. • Dock Diving involves the handler throwing a toy into a body of water and the dog jumping in to retrieve it with the goal of jumping the farthest.

pursuing properties and learning more about the process.” Charlotte is in the process of looking for a location for a permanent home for K9ology. Ideally, it would be close to Warrenton, have a good amount of acreage with fields and, hopefully, a pond. The plans for the new facility include a 75 x 200 foot foot dog park with dog equipment like an eco-friendly recyclable dog playground equipment, agility ramps, jumps, tunnels, and a teeter-totter. “It will be a totally interactive canine playground,” she explains. It will have rubber mulch as a base, which is very cushy for the footing and doesn’t produce any dust. At first, when the property is located, the plans are to build a 60 x 40 foot building for small group classes and private training. Also planned are a 14 x 30 foot office building, and a 79 x 90 foot pole barn for agility, small dog shows, and competition events. With acreage, they can add

herding and expand their bird dog training. And remember the wish for the pond? Charlotte would love to add dock diving, a canine competition sport. But Charlotte’s dreams go far beyond training. She wants to build a community of local dog owners where clients and their dogs can have fun together. “I used to have festivals, before COVID, and I’d like to bring those back. We used to have Woofstock in the spring, and Barktoberfest in the fall. Clients would come hang out, bring potluck shared lunches, and enjoy the agility equipment and the rally obedience course. People can ask questions, share stories, and just have fun with their dogs. It’s a way of giving back to my clients.”

What makes K9ology different?

“People think dog trainers work mostly with dogs. Actually, we work mostly with owners, teaching them how to teach their dogs,” says Charlotte. “One of the challenges is that owners tend to see training as a burden, like it’s work or effort. But it doesn’t have to be. Training becomes the way you interact with your dog all the time, purely because they are constantly learning, constantly observing you, and being reinforced — or not — by your feedback.” “There are three parts to teaching a dog a command, and many people only do the first part,” she says. The first part is teaching the command, and many owners stop there. But then, they often find, their dogs don’t respond to the

command when they are away from home. The second part of training is called proofing, or teaching your dog to obey the command even when there are distractions, like people, other dogs, toys, or squirrels. The third part is called generalization, where you work with your dog and the command in different locations. “That’s why some owners don't get what they want out of the training process, because they only put in a third of the work,” Charlotte explains. w What’s New at K9ology? NEVER STOP LEARNING From rapping as L.L. Cool Bryant in the classroom to painting pet portraits, Joyce Bryant has made an impact on the community. BY HANNAH SAMLALL |

PHOTOS BY HOUSE OF AMSEL PHOTOGRAPHY

“I

n the 80s, my mother was LL Cool Bryant and she would rap history stories to her students,” Anne Bryant said. “She did engaging teaching before ‘engagement’ was a buzzword in the classroom.” Anne’s mother, Joyce Bryant, 86, who taught at H.M. Pearson for 16 years, now spends her time painting, learning new recipes, and is always looking to try new things. Joyce Bryant grew up in Suffolk, Virginia, and had always dabbled in different art projects. When she was 18 years old, she left home to attend Longwood College and earn her teaching degree. After graduation, she moved to Manassas and got a job at Yorkshire Elementary School in Prince William County, where she met her husband. In 1973, they moved to Fauquier County and had two daughters, Anne and Joan. “My husband was a carpenter,” Joyce said. “He built our house.” Both Anne and Joan attended H.M. Pearson Elementary and Cedar Lee Middle and graduated from Fauquier High School. After college, they both went on to follow in their mother’s footsteps. “Neither of us wanted to be a teacher, but we both followed in her footsteps,” Anne said. “We admired her so much and she was a fantastic teacher. I’m now teaching some of the children of some of her students. People have told me they had my mom and have never forgotten her and they’ll have stars in their eyes when I say that I’m her daughter.” Anne teaches at Cedar Lee Middle and her sister, Joan, teaches at Brumfield Elementary.

“HELP PEOPLE, When Joyce retired from Pearson in 1991, she focused her efforts on tutoring and learning gardening, which she continued to do for many years until recently. “She would go to my sister’s classroom and read to students and she also tutored students and at home. She has always kept busy; she’s a teacher who has always loved to learn.” Eventually, gardening became physically taxing, but being the lifelong learner she is, knew this was an opportunity to try something new. “There was a watercolor painting in our dining room that was a still life that I loved and a portrait of JFK that she did in her twenties that I was always fascinated by,” Anne said. “So I encouraged her to get back into it full time. I gave her an acrylic kit when she retired.” In the early 2000s, there was a sycamore tree at the corner of Rogues Road and Weston Road in Casanova that Joyce painted. “It won Best of Show at the Fauquier Fair,” she said. “I took a couple of watercolor classes in college but I was bad, the paintings were poorly done. The professor was so kind and always found something good to say about our paintings, though. I am relearning how to do watercolor. I started with watercolor, then went to acrylics, and now my favorite is pastels. I started working with pastels in 2016 and have quite a collection now.” As for subject matter, Joyce loves focusing on landscapes, but she has also done a lot of pet portraits. “I must have done 60 to 75 pet portraits by now,” Joyce said. Her art has reached people all over the country, from Virginia to Texas to California. For her 86th birthday, Joyce had an art show right in her

People donated, but I donated to the Remington Little Free Pantry.” In July 2019, Joyce found out the devastating news that doctors had diagnosed her with anaplastic thyroid cancer. She was given one to six months to live. “They told her it was fatal, but that they could slow the growth and give her a few more months,” Anne said. “She did an experimental radiation high-dose treatment with the University of Virginia. The doctors were giving us good news, but then they started using words like miracle. Last year, the surgeon who originally said the tumor was inoperable, operated last year and removed the tumor and she is now cancer-free.” Throughout the whole process, Joyce stayed positive and active and that’s what she hopes for her legacy to be. “Never give up,” Joyce said. “Things will get better. Help people, stay as active as you can and never, ever stop learning.” w

Senior Solutions The Senior Services Collaborative addresses the quality of life of the local aging population. BY PAM KAMPHUIS

“I

’d call it a unique think tank,” says Ray Parks, director of aging and program support services at Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services, of the regional Senior Services Collaborative organization. SSC is a local group of different agencies, providers, and people that are involved in serving older adults in the tri-county community of Fauquier, Rappahannock, and Culpeper. Facilitated by Ellen Phipps, executive director of Aging Together, the SSC group was created through an extensive planning process to meet the needs of older adults and improve their quality of life. Through the identification of gaps in services, the group works to create solutions to make life easier, better, and healthier for our seniors.

34 Warrenton Lifestyle

APRIL 2022

There are many projects that have their genesis in the work of the SSC and receive funding through the PATH Foundation, among them Generations Central Adult Day Care Center, the Regional Transportation Collaborative, and Fauquier FISH for Seniors. “Senior services is one of the PATH Foundation’s four areas of focus, because our population is older compared to other areas in the region. When we work collaboratively, we often find that the conditions and solutions that benefit seniors actually benefit everyone in the community, which is why we consider things like walkability, safety net and healthcare, transportation, housing, food, and sharing information about how to access those resources,” says Christy Connolly, president and CEO of the PATH Foundation. “PATH has done wonderful things for this community. The money they bring is fantastic, but partnerships they’ve curated, such as the SSC, are invaluable,” says Charity Furness, executive director of Fauquier FISH. Ray adds, “Fauquier County is a real focal point for senior services, and the collaborations brought about by the SSC result in pulling together a lot of previously unrelated resources and doing some creative things that I think are unique, and these three programs I think are some good examples of that.”

FISH for Seniors

Generations Central Adult Day Care Center

Regional Transportation Collaborative

As some readers may know, the Adult Day Care Center in Warrenton has closed. “It was a great program, but they were really limited by space,” says Sara Amos, director of the new Generations Central Adult Day Care Center in Culpeper, which is centrally located and open to community members of a five county area, including Fauquier County. “Now we have miles of space,” Amos says of the new center, which is over 6,000 square feet. The center is located at the Culpeper Baptist Church, and is licensed to accomodate 60 participants in the program. “We are starting out with 15 seniors enrolled, with a 1-6 staff-participant ratio,” she says. “This is still a fledgling program, and we expect to grow to accommodate more hours and more participants as needed in the future,” Amos continues. The benefits to Adult Day Care are many, and one of the greatest is combatting senior isolation, which has increased since COVID-19. In partnership with the well-established day care center also at the church, Generations is also able to offer intergenerational opportunities. Amos emphasizes, “We are not a drop-in program. Participants must go through the enrollment process and have a physical examination with their doctor before coming to the center.” The cost of the program is $90/day or $45/half day, and limited scholarships are available at this time.

Transportation can be a huge problem for seniors, especially those that live alone and can no longer drive. There are solutions in the Fauquier community, such as public transport, private transportation, and volunteer organizations such as Voltran, a Fauquier-based grassroots volunteer driver program. Started at the end of 2020, the Regional Transportation Collaborative was formed, a model unique to Virginia. It is a community partnership that is working together to increase mobility options for older adults and vulnerable individuals. “Now, thanks to RTC, these mobility organizations are under one roof, so to speak. While still maintaining their own programs and autonomy, the RTC can help with funding options and grants for these nonprofits” says Kristin Lam Peraza, TDM Coordinator and Mobility Manager at the Regional Transportation Collaborative Now, RTC operates one call center that assists with transportation needs for seniors in Fauquier and the surrounding counties. By calling one number, seniors can get information on any transportation support: public, private, or volunteer. Kristin says, “All arrangements made through there. A lot of the time it’s Voltran but we also try to match people with public transit and other available options.”

Fauquier FISH (For Immediate Sympathetic Help) has been a force in the community since 1983, mostly addressing food insufficiency for children. Now, FISH, with the Fauquier County Department of Social Services, has launched FISH for Seniors, a meal delivery program for isolated seniors modeled after the program for children and thanks to a grant from the PATH Foundation. FISH is presently delivering DASH meals (Delicious, Affordable, Simple, Healthy) to 40 Fauquier seniors that have been identified as in need, at risk, and homebound by DSS or Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services. Ingredients and preparation directions for nine healthy, easy meals (breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks for three days) are delivered to the seniors once a month, but with leftovers, the seniors often find that they have enough food for as many as 10 days. “We are not able to serve everyone that is in need right now,” said Charity. “We serve as many as we can. We feel the needs are between 300-400 isolated seniors that are at risk of hunger. Our obstacles to reaching everyone at risk are finding a larger space to store and pack food, and developing a delivery system to reach everyone.”

Can you help? The Pals for Seniors program is not yet available. To get the program off the ground, a volunteer to coordinate the program and more volunteers to support the coordinator and the seniors are needed. The Scamordellas are willing to possibly offer a permanent foster to a few seniors on a case by case basis, but, as Brenda says, the demand is likely to grow fast. They want it to be successful and sustainable, so growth must be limited to what the existing volunteer staff can handle.

“C

ompanion pets provide senior people with a purposeful daily routine, reaping the rewards of joy, love, and [a] healthier quality of life together,” says Brenda Scamordella–head of the non-profit animal rescue Paws For Seniors with her husband and co-founder, Jim. The Scamordellas have been pairing senior pets with senior citizens in their foster

network since the inception of the nonprofit. Paws For Seniors is now looking to make that arrangement official with a program in development named Pals For Seniors. Revival of the senior foster program “We’ve been thinking about it for years,” Brenda said. The idea of the program was reanimated when Paws For Seniors was accidentally tagged in a post about a senior foster

program from a similar organization across the country in Washington. “It went viral,” Brenda said, “for us!” Jim added. The Scamordellas said how the mixup reminded them that senior permanent foster programs are “very much needed in the community and across the nation.” They were flooded with inquiries from seniors interested in the program. “We’ve even got queries from England,” laughed Brenda. “There are a lot of senior citizens out there who can love and cherish these pets, but they don’t have the income to do it,” said Jim.

A lifetime commitment

Pals For Seniors would bridge the gap between fostering and adopting for those seniors who can’t afford to adopt a senior pet. “We’re committed to the pets for life,” Jim said regarding the rescue’s mission. The senior permanent foster program would include “fully funding the needs of [the] pet” as part of that lifetime commitment, said Brenda.

The Scamordellas have never shied away from placing pets in the homes of senior citizens, the majority of Paws For Seniors’ adopters are over 60 years old. “There are a lot of senior citizens who have [applied] with us that are 80-90 years old, and when we qualify them it’s a joyous moment. They almost cry because they’ve been turned down so many times,” Jim said. “My mother in law had a permanent foster from Paw For Seniors when it was more of a pilot program,” said Ella Greenhalgh of Orlean. “The Scamordellas and their staff were amazing. They carefully matched her with her dog Jake and made sure that he was the type of dog she could handle, and that she was the type of person to care for him and love him. They were absolutely inseparable. Paws For Seniors took care of Jake when Oma was ill, and were always there for both of them until she passed away, and then they

took Jake back in.”

Serving seniors

“Over the years we realized we were doing more than rescuing pets, we were serving the community as far as helping senior citizens,” said Jim. The program is an expansion of that service to senior citizens. “This kind of program helps them not only with having a companion animal to take care of but also the volunteer visits give them someone to talk to,” Brenda said. The pets get a safe and stable home to live out their days while the senior citizens get a renewed purpose to care for a companion and all the healthy activity that comes with that.

Developing the program

The range of the program is dependent upon the location of the resources that will sustain it–such as volunteer support and vet partnerships. Their service area will extend past Fauquier to include Culpeper, Rap-

pahannock, and Madison Counties. They are working out logistics such as sponsorship benefits for donors, a financial vetting process for applicants, and what pets will be designated for the program. As they forge the details of the program using their expertise from over a decade of rehabilitating and rehoming animals, they are on the lookout for someone to join the mission and lead it as coordinator–someone with a “total commitment to the program,” said Jim. Brenda said, “We want to do it right, we don’t want to do it halfway.” Whether talking about potential program leaders or senior applicants, she said, “They’re not going to be out there on their own. We will give them a lot of support.” One thing set in stone, Brenda said, is the “team of enthusiastic people behind you.” w pawsforseniors.org | 540-748-8177

Victorious People Not being able to speak is not the same as not having anything to say BY PAM KAMPHUIS PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER

F

or years while he was growing up in Warrenton, Nicholas G. Moore, who has autism, hardly spoke at all. His intelligence was hidden behind a wall of silence. Now, having discovered several methods of communication and melding them into one that works best for him, he is reaching out to autistic people and their parents to help them unlock their potential with his new business, Victorious People, LLC. This business is hugely important to Nicholas, primarily because of his wish to help free others with autism to achieve what he refers to as Intentional Open Communication (IOC), or reliable communication with others. But it is also for himself, to achieve more financial independence. “My business is predicated on the fact that I have mastered self-advocacy and clearly become proficient at communication via typing. I believe every voice in our community needs to be heard and I intend to see that it is. For me, it is a passion and a mission, to bring these families closer to God and to free the voices of their sons and daughters.”

Nicholas was adamant that this article be about successes, and not struggles, but his struggles and overcoming them are what makes him what he is today and are important to the story. He explained, “I spent 25 years in near silence being misunderstood and taken for a fool. When I was little, I was forced to live in silence not by people, but by fear. I was literally afraid to speak because nothing came out correctly. It felt to me as if a stranger had my throat. I developed a negative mindset that I could not speak. It was a devastating curse on my entire life.” Nicholas went to school, of course, but struggled as many with autism do. He

Community Support

Nicholas also received support from others in the community. At about the age of 12, he aspired to become an athlete and worked with trainers at the Old Town Athletic Campus. “Cole Forsten embraced him as any other and thought outside the box to teach him to run, jump and sprint,” said Wendy. “He was a hero to me because he did not require me to talk,” added Nicholas. John Tanner, also then at OTAC, was a huge influence because, as Nicholas explained, “He did not see me as disabled, but abled. He has always been a good friend.”

The Beginning of a New Life

attended C. Hunter Ritchie elementary school, Marshall Middle and Cedar Lee middle schools, and Liberty High School. He learned fast but was frustrated by his inability to communicate. “The school told my mother I couldn’t be taught how to tell time. What they didn’t know was I already knew. But I couldn’t demonstrate it. They didn’t give me a chance to show them my way,” he said. He continued, “So, I suffered through the entire course of my education until one day when I was a teenager, a teacher named Carmen Fox was given me as a student. She saw a light in my eyes. And she knew I was in there. So, she proceeded to teach me. She found I could spell. I was the best speller in her class, even though I could barely speak. She was a lifesaver. She rescued me.”

Ethan and Owen Freidline, two local clients of Nicholas, pose with him at his home in Warrenton. Nicholas has many different alphabet boards, some homemade and meticulously carved.

When Nicholas was 20, he attended a Special Olympics event that changed his life and his family’s. He met a young man whose mother had trained in a method called Facilitated Communication (FC). They had coffee together, and she introduced Wendy and Nicholas to this method of communication. Wendy said, “I looked at the young man and said, ‘Thank you. You have saved my son.’ And then he said, ‘Thank you so much for meeting us. My mom needed a friend.’” FC, and similar methods called Spelling to Communicate (S2C) and Rapid Prompting Method (RPM), involve the autistic person spelling out messages by touching letters on a card or keyboard while their hands are steadied physically by a facilitator. Armed with this information, the Moores plunged ahead, and Nicholas, using a hybrid of the three methods, developed his own method of communication. He became proficient in spelling out messages that his mom would read. “After 25 years,” Wendy said, “just by having the connection of my hand touching his, he was able to communicate with me and teach me about his whole life and about God.” These methods are not mainstream – and are even discouraged – in the commonplace treatment of autism due to studies strongly suggesting that responses are actually coming from the facilitator and not the autistic person. However, spelling on alphabet boards does have the support of hundreds of families around the globe, many of whom have found independence through typing, including the Moores. Nicholas said, “The methods I learned have been largely discredited by professionals, but they don’t ask us. We are the true experts.” However, noted Nicholas, spelling is not perfect. “It is laborious,” he said, “to spell out each word of each thought. It is excruciating, and yet I need my voice to be heard. As autists, we are conceptual thinkers, not word thinkers. Concepts are large and vast. To hone them down to words is a huge act of willpower. To have to spell out every thought is challenging because they come so fast. It is maddening to have to wait for my mother to tell what I’ve spelled out because I have so much more to say.”

Goals

Now, Nicholas has goals, primarily helping others with autism and helping to reduce the stigma they face. His

business rates are reasonable, because sometimes autism treatment is cost prohibitive, and Nicholas doesn’t want any family to be broken by the inability to pay. He is not educated in the treatment of autism – as he said, “I don’t have a degree, I went to the school of hard knocks.” – but what he can do is use his own experiences, methods, and successes to help other families. “I meet individually with each family and listen to their challenges. Then we teach them a bit about anxiety and motor control. From there we do a series of exercises to establish a baseline. And then make recommendations for a blueprint to success for each individual according to his or her unique situation,” Nicholas explained. He continued, “We are a group of people with vast capabilities who are awaiting the key to unlock the prison doors to discover our voice which has been locked away in silence. Helping someone unlock their own true voice is a huge gift to all.”

Growth

Nicholas has seven clients already, some nonverbal, some partially verbal, and is working seven days a week. He meets with clients both in person and virtually, and travels extensively within the U.S. to spread his message of helping all to find their voices.

Nicholas with his mother, Wendy Johnston, who assists him with getting his messages out to the world.

“I flew to Montana recently where I found a community willing and ready to embrace the communication challenges of their students. They have formed an autism center and they are working with me to add a communication training piece that is underwritten by grants and supported by donations. My hope is that I can do the same here in Warrenton,” he said. Nicholas continues, “I hope to invite everyone to embrace us as intelligent people that are no different from everyone else on the inside. We are all in the battle for our lives imprisoned by bodies that at times do not obey and are hampered by voices that at times do not convey our truest intentions.” Nicholas concluded, “My vision is for a worldwide network of hope to spring up out of nowhere and to rescue the lost voices around the globe. It all begins with me. That is my purpose in life. My vision is to first build a virtual community, and then an actual community in which autists can live, learn, and grow, and teach the world the truth about autism.” w Website coming soon: thequietvoice.godaddysites.com If you would like more information, write to Nicholas at his business email: vpllc22@gmail.com

farm country in Northern Virginia”–dreamily listing Delaplane and Marshall among the sights. Doug is one of the 11,000 people who travel into the county daily. He makes the hour-long commute from his homebase in Berryville. Doug doesn’t mind the commute, saying it “gives [him] time to either wind up or wind down for work.” Parsons is a self-proclaimed lover of the outdoors. “I see dozens of deer and foxes on the way in… some of them running out in front of the car,” he chuckled, “but most of them placidly eating in the fields.” With 22 wineries and a surplus of scenic landscapes, there’s plenty to be relished in Fauquier–something that the department is working to market. Sharing the wealth of Fauquier’s land and businesses invites non-locals to participate in the community. Doug said tourism supports 1,500 jobs in the county and “capturing that disposable income is one of the attractive things about bringing in new businesses.”

Attracting new business

Doug Parsons “The Foundations of Fauquier’s Business” Economic Development Director sets the path forward. BY JAYA PATIL

“F

auquier has got a lot going for it,” says Doug Parsons, Director of the Fauquier County Department of Economic Development. That much is clear as Parsons has established his footing in the position since starting in Oct. 2021. The department’s plan for the county revolves around cultivating an environment in which existing and new businesses can thrive. Economic development is all about strength-

46 Warrenton Lifestyle

ening the activity in the community and building the region up to exhibit all that the area has to offer. The endeavors of economic development encourage entrepreneurship, lure in the right kind of business, support existing business, and promote tourism. Those aspirations rely on retention, marketing, and resources.

Supporting existing business “Over 80% of new jobs nationwide come from existing businesses,” Doug explained. Stimulating the job market is part of the overall gameplan so they need to invest learning and growth opportunities into the businesses that already help run the county. Doug and the department team have already made 25 business retention visits. Parsons defines it as visits to businesses throughout the county. The motive for the retention visits is to communicate directly with business owners and open the conversation on ways the department can help. Three of the businesses found the visits productive after the department took action to help with their expressed staffing needs. Department of Economic Development Workforce Coordinator Donna Comer organized career cafes that resulted in new employees for the attending businesses.

Allure of Fauquier On his way to work, Parsons said, “I get to drive through some of the most beautiful

2,000 people in the IT field commute daily outside of the county, and that’s just a fraction of the total number of residents who leave the county for work each day. Parsons strives to capture those jobs that take people out of the county and bring them to Fauquier. The department intends to reel in IT, cybersecurity, data center, and government contractor business to make those opportunities accessible to residents. Many of the resources offered as selling points are valuable to both new and existing business. “We’ve been working on a new website that we’re creating to try to better illustrate the advantages of doing business in Fauquier County to business prospects,” Doug explained, “and also have it be a resource for existing businesses to access financial and workforce resources.”

Integration and foresight

The department has reached out to the different municipalities in the county to foster reciprocity and give attention to every corner of the county. They have ongoing projects in Warrenton and Remington, a focus on tourism in The Plains, and construction in Marshall to increase accessibility and appeal. In the meantime, Doug has been enjoying the county’s offerings. His day starts at Deja Brew and might end up at Ellie’s or Denim and Pearls by lunch. He found his wife’s birthday gifts at Latitudes. Ultimately, it’s the people that drew him into his position. He said, “There’s a great group of people here that are very talented and working hard,” so the future is bright for Fauquier. w

Drink to Your Health A delicious and flavorful family recipe that is turning others into believers BY SUE BALDANI PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER

W

hen Brent Henderson started making kombucha at home in 2009, he had no idea it would be the beginning of a business. “My wife had pain associated with digestion and a friend recommended kombucha as a potential solution,” he says. “It worked from the very first time she drank it.” The Good Reverend Kombucha Co., based in Warrenton, started sharing its family recipe in June of 2020, and now offers a bevy of varieties and flavors. The name, explains Brent, is in small part due to the fact that he was once a reverend, but has more to do with turning people into believers that kombucha can taste great. His kombucha, he explains, is a sparkling, slightly sweet, slightly tart fermented beverage made from tea. “Our tagline is ‘We’ll make you a believer!’ It's delicious and just happens to be really good for you.” Brent has been using the same kombucha culture since 2009. “It's been a completely closed system with no outside introduction,” he says. “Organic ingredients are used at every single level of the fermentation process from the tea and the sugar to the fruits and other ingredients used to flavor our products.” He also strives for fair trade practices wherever he can. “Both the tea

and the sugars we get are fair trade. We import the tea directly from a tea importer in China that focuses on really high quality. It’s not the brown dried out leaves you see in most tea bags, but green and fresh and sweet. “We also do everything in small batches and slow the fermentation process as much as we can because we found, at least with our product, the longer that we can do our primary fermentation, the smoother and more vibrant the flavor and the more carbonated it is.” The company has also recently switched from using organic fruit juices to whole fruits. “We were able to lower the sugar content and believe that it's a healthier experience as well,” says Brent. The company’s number one seller is OMG, which stands for Orange Mango Goodness. “We also have rotating seasonal flavors, which are only available for three months at a time,” he says. “Our spring seasonal, Spring Shandy, has a citrusy floral hoppy flavor; Summer Solstice is like a sparkling lemonade with a hint of vanilla; Autumn Moon is made with apples and cranberries; and Winter Solstice contains apples, cinnamon and nutmeg.” There are two lines of kombucha – its TGR line, which is its standard kombucha with flavors like OMG, Cherry Vanilla, and Lemon Blueberry, and its Rev Up line, which is its athletic kombucha. “When developing our athletic line of kombucha, I was able to work with the athletic nutritionists for the Washington Football Team (now the Commanders),” says Brent. “The formulas are based on their elite, athletic nutritional needs. We tested it with their athletes and now for the last two seasons it has been incorporated into their athletic nutritional regimen.” The three flavors in the athletic line are Blue Hawaii, Purple Crush and its best seller, Red Line, the most nutrient dense kombucha that they carry. “All three have coconut water and banana, and then the other ingredients are specific to different elements of athletic performance, hydration or recovery.” Blue Hawaii is its second best seller. “It has blue spirulina, which has folic and amino acids for muscle growth and recovery, coconut water, banana and pineapple. Pineapple has bromelain, which is a natural anti-inflammatory, and banana has potassium, which helps with muscle cramps. Purple Crush has dragon fruit and acai which have non-complex carbohydrates that readily break down and provide a form of energy.”

50 Warrenton Lifestyle

APRIL 2022

He says he started making kombucha because of the health benefits and then over the course of the years it became a passion and he wanted to make it taste even better. “We never had any intention of starting a company; we just loved kombucha. Now, to hear people tell us ours has had a substantial impact on the quality of their life is such an honor. It's the most satisfying thing that we could ever hear. A lot of people say they love the flavors, but whenever the quality of a person's life is markedly improved, you have to take a step back and realize that there was another plan.” One of its true believers is Anna, a girl with cystic fibrosis. “She’s on an incredible amount of antibiotics that are just absolutely wrecking her digestive health and she can’t keep many foods down,” says Brent. “But, she loves our kombucha and has started to see her daily health and the way she feels throughout the course of the day improve drastically.” In addition to selling kombucha in various retailers from D.C. to Charlottesville, he also takes it on the road. “The Good Trailer is a 1970 horse trailer we converted into a beautiful mobile bar using reclaimed building materials,” he says.“We use it for weddings, parties and other events. We'll also take it to farmers’ markets.” This season, they’ll be at local farmers’ markets in Charlottesville, Haymarket, Brambleton and more. The Good Reverend Kombucha Co. is a real family business. His sons, Ashton, age 15, and Tanner, 14, work part time in the company while attending school online. “It’s been really nice to have them available to help during the week and with the farmers’ markets on weekends,” he says. His 10-year-old daughter Piper, who attends Bradley Elementary School, also helps out at the farmers’ markets, and another daughter, 3-year-old Charlie Ann, goes to Warrenton United Methodist Preschool and is so far just a consumer in the business. Brent and his family reside on a 20-acre farm with chickens, sheep, and gardens in Warrenton, and The Good Reverend Kombucha Co. helps support Hope Heals, his wife Lindsey’s nonprofit in Warrenton that provides clothing and other goods for people in need. w For more information and to see all the flavors offered, go to tgrkombucha.com.

Be a Champion Champions for Children helps foster kids live their best lives and raises awareness of child abuse BY SUE BALDANI

W

hile children in foster care receive the basic necessities like housing, clothing and food, there often isn’t enough money for extras. Even birthday parties and gifts, which mean so much to kids, are sometimes out of reach. This is where Champions for Children (CFC) comes in. In 2017, a group of local foster care workers wanted to raise money so these children could have access to the same activities as their peers. “Foster parents receive a stipend, but it’s not enough to cover swimming

lessons, music classes, karate and other activities the children might be interested in,” says Gabrielle Winningham, one of the social workers with the Fauquier County Department of Social Services (DSS) in Warrenton who an integral part of this group. “So, we brainstormed ways in which to fundraise.” One of her coworkers mentioned how popular 5K races were as a way to raise money. “The first two years we held our 5K at Great Meadows and after the race, we had a Family Festival with local vendors like Orangetheory Fitness in Gainesville, a petting zoo, a moon

bounce, and other activities,” she says. “And, 4P Foods in Fauquier donated all the fruit.” Initially, they had close to 200 runners, but in subsequent years the numbers waned, and the last two years, because of COVID, they’ve done it virtually. This year, instead of a 5K and festival, they’re asking for direct donations to the Champions for Children fund. “All of us on the Family Services team were very involved those first couple of years,” says Child Protective Services (CPS) supervisor, Barbara Crowling. “It was a lot of work but also a lot of fun to see all the people come out and support it. We were able to distribute a lot of informational materials and had really good conversations with people about CPS and foster care. I hope that one day we can go back to that.” The funds raised are used not only for birthday presents and fun activities, but also for much more dire needs. “We had siblings in foster care whose mother died,” says Winningham. “She was in Arizona and we were able to use those funds to send the kids to their mother’s funeral. We also bought them necklaces which contained her ashes and had her name on them.” Champions for Children also raises awareness about child abuse. “April is Child Abuse

Prevention Month,” she says. “Our T-shirts are baby blue, which is the child abuse prevention color, and we also put our pinwheels on display. When we did the 5Ks we had a pinwheel display and a table where we passed them out. Even through the virtual races, we would send out a packet to all of the runners that included baby-blue colored pens, stickers and pinwheels.” Adds Crowling, “Child Abuse Prevention Month was started by a grandmother in the Tidewater area who lost her grandson to physical abuse. Last year, DSS was able to get permission from [County Administrator] Paul McCulla to put what we call a pinwheel garden in front of the Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court. our office, and not everybody comes close to our office, so it was nice to be able to have it there.” She says they generally receive 25 plus calls a month about possible cases of child abuse, and she encourages people to call. “You don't have to give your name and even if you do, it's protected, and we can talk about a situation that you have concerns about.” Right now they have 43 kids in foster care, and foster homes are always needed. “They need a safe, comfortable home to go to with a family that's willing to take them in, provide support and encouragement and treat them like one of their own,” says Crowling. “Overall, we hear a lot of good feedback from our foster parents. It's a lot of work, and a lot of heartache, but it can be really rewarding.”

About eight months ago, Winningham began doing resource coordinating, assisting in foster parent training, and handling all the foster home approvals. “Our next training begins on May 18th,” she says. “It's five consecutive weeks and it's all virtual.” To support Champions for Children, Winningham says people can make a donation to DSS with a notation that it should be directed to Champions for Children. For organizations, corporations and businesses, they can send out sponsorship packets that explain the various levels of giving. w To find out more about CFC, Child Abuse Prevention Month, and about becoming a foster parent, contact Gabrielle Winningham at 540-422-8433 or gabrielle.winningham@dss.virginia.gov.

How Far She’ll Go County Spelling Bee winner Anna Snyder has a lot more than spelling going on

BY JAYA PATIL

A

nna Synder was greeted by a wall of reporters, educators, and audience when she walked off the Fauquier High School auditorium stage on the afternoon of Saturday, February 5. The first thing I noticed about her was her earrings–golden snitches from the world of Harry Potter. She then pointed out Hogwarts on her shirt. She had entered the battle of the county spelling bee outfitted with armor from one of her most loved book series. Anna has an eye for detail, showing up with silver Disney fairy hoop earrings for our interview. There are a lot of details to her life that paint the picture of who the Cedar Lee seventh-grade county spelling bee winner is. “Spelling Bee winner” is the most recent title she has held but not the only one.

An eventful day of competition

“I remember being really nervous,” Anna said of winning the county spelling bee. She advances through competitions despite the difficulties. She says the hardest part is “working up the nerve to get onto the stage and then actually going up in front of the audience.” Even though it’s nerve-racking, it’s also exhilarating. “The most memorable competition that I had was in third grade,” she said, when she was in the 24 Club, which is a mathematical game. “I used to be all over 24 because it was amazingly fun and I would look forward to it every day,” Anna shared. She made it to the semi-finals of that competition and only when she returned to Mary Walter did she learn that she was the first student of the school to make it that far. Anna has been a Girl Scout since kindergarten, but they weren’t hosting a Powder Puff Derby this year. The morning of the county spelling bee, her family attended her brother’s Boy Scout Pinewood Derby. She and her sis-

ter got the chance to compete in the Outlaw Derby–open to friends and family–and took it. Anna showed up to the county spelling bee that afternoon fresh from winning the Outlaw Derby.

A woman of many pursuits

Actively leading the way

Anna will dive into knowledge just as she will hurdle towards activity. We’re not just talking track and rollerblading here, although those are part of it. Her parents said that “she amazed everyone by hula hooping while dancing, running, and crossing a balance beam in the Mary Walter talent show” one year. She loves baking and making–from cupcakes and family dinners to concoctions and science kits. Anna and her brother will even put on their own family versions of the cooking competition Chopped. Just as the high school stage didn’t stop her, a challenge doesn’t faze her. Anna dedicates herself as actively to moving around as to creating opportunities to empower and inspire those around her. Before graduating from Mary Walter to Cedar Lee, Anna and her best friend Aubrey started the Lightning Girls Club. The club was established to “help girls feel like they’re wanted and get back up again when they’ve fallen from a high place,” she said.

“Anna has always loved learning,” her parents shared, “She was such a sponge when she was little, she would soak up anything.” Her favorite historical figure is Albert Einstein, and she recently took on trying to memorize the periodic table. She can often be found reading on her bed at home. Of the Harry Potter series, her favorite character is undoubtedly Hermione. “She was a true role model for me because she was really into her education,” Anna said. Anna loves creating stories and has been writing her own fantasy book since elementary school that she hopes to publish one day. “I feel like writing my own book is a ton of fun and it feels like you’re making your own adventure,” she raved. She has even made the cover for her ongoing book–embellished with the eerie eyes of a misty dragon flanked with figures in old armor.

Club meetings started with education on female idols such as Helen Keller or J. K. Rowling, followed by an activity inspired by what those women did or were known for. Open to any girls, the club was special for more reserved girls in showing them what they’re capable of. “Everyone needs someone to help pull them up,” Anna said.

How far she’ll go

Anna expresses her feelings eloquently and reminds us that there is no courage without vulnerability. She remembers the best part of the county spelling bee as “the surprise of actually winning.” She went into it thinking, “I’ll do my best, but I probably won’t get that far.” When I repeated her victory, she looked down with a modest smile. Her parents said, “Back when she was much younger, her mind was set on being a spy at night, a scientist and engineer during the week, and working on weekends at Pizza Hut.” She has dwindled that down into being an architect. She was anticipating the Fredericksburg regional spelling bee competition when we spoke. About it, she said, “I’m looking forward to seeing how far I’ll go, seeing what I can do”–and, for her life ahead, we are too. w

I N MEM ORY OF

Bob Farkas

Mr. Farkas was the first scoutmaster of Warrenton Boy Scout Troop 175 in 1964 and also held the position of commander of the American Legion Post 72 in Warrenton. He is remembered as an ebullient, warm-hearted man, but also for the heroic act that saved a 15-year-old boy scout, Rusty Delaney, from a bear attack in New Mexico while on a Boy Scout camping expedition. Farkas hit the bear in the head with an ax, and then he walked 18 miles for help. Rusty was airlifted out, and made a full recovery, and the bear was later captured. “I wasn’t thinking but one thing, getting that bear off one of my boys,” he said at the time. Farkas held scouting’s highest award, the Silver Beaver, as well as the Torch award for 46 years of devotion to the boy scouts. Photo contributed by Linda Farkas.

Chauncey Brown in Rockwood Hall (now McClanahan’s Camera) in the 1940s. Brown was a local guitar legend known for playing “Sweet Georgia Brown” in honor of his wife, Georgia. Longtime Fauquier residents recall him playing for society affairs and weddings as well as proms at the high school and hunt breakfasts. Photo contributed by John Kendrick.

Do you have memories and photos of growing up in Fauquier County? Or a “Do you remember?” question? We’d love to hear your reminiscences and see your photos! Please send photos with captions and questions/memories to pam@warrentonlifestyle.com

Fauquier planning commissioners approve loosening regulations on small dog-breeding operations Fauquier residents who only breed dogs once a year may soon be permitted to apply to have a small breeding operation without obtaining zoning approval from the county. The Fauquier Planning Commission approved a text amendment exempting small breeders from acquiring a special permit or exception if they breed no more than one companion animal once a year. The amendment would also allow breeders to establish a “minor kennel” -- permitting up to four litters in a calendar year. Commissioners drafted the new amendment in January after breeders approached the county and expressed concern about red tape getting in the way of them being able to breed small litters as a hobby. The proposed amendment will next go to the county Board of Supervisors for a vote.

Old Bust Head unveils environmentally friendly beer, honors late daughter

In March, Old Bust Head Brewery unveiled its first batch of beer made using recycled carbon dioxide. Julie Broaddus, one of the co-founders, announced the creation of their new English Pale Ale made with fresh local hops and recycled CO2— the first Virginia brewery to do so. “It is definitely the greenest beer we’ve ever brewed,” Broaddus said. This is the latest of several Old Bust Head green initiatives, including installing solar arrays, LED lights and geothermal heating. Broaddus started taking on environmental enterprises in memory of her late daughter, Finley, who was a staunch environmentalist.
