Over 47,000 votes This issue of Warrenton Lifestyle is always eagerly awaited every year...the results of our “Best of” competition. This year, our voting area was expanded to include businesses and people in all of Fauquier County, not just the Town of Warrenton, and we are overwhelmed with gratitude at the results. We had over 47,000 votes in our Best of Fauquier survey! Thank you to all our readers and followers who voted, and thank you to all the businesses and people in Fauquier County, winners or not, for making Fauquier county truly the Best Place to Live. While I consider Fauquier the best place to live, we are not without problems. The opioid crisis affects so many. We have in Fauquier two organizations that are determined to decrease overdose deaths by educating people about Narcan®, the drug used to treat opioid overdoses, and distributing the drug for free to our community. CAYA and FODA work together on the Travis Project’s REVIVE training. If you read nothing else in this issue, please read that — it could save someone’s life. Consider attending CAYA’s main fundraiser, the 5K Run for Your Life at Verdun Adventure Bound on September 22. But that’s not all that’s in this issue. Check out our Back to School on a Budget article, featuring local thrift shops, local models, and local hair stylists and makeup artists. Our readers are always wanting more history...everyone is fascinated with Fauquier’s past and what it used to be like to live here. We have two features this month that will give you a glimpse into history. Have a wonderful August, and happy back to school time.

Let me put my passion for real estate and my love of helping people to work for you! “We used Patti both to sell our home and also purchase our new place. She is incredibly responsive, proactive and a great person to boot; we were very grateful to find someone like her who really cares and understands the ropes, which was important given how stressful real estate can be. Her energy and positivity are infectious, but she was also never anything but honest and straight with us during the entire process, which we really appreciated. We’re certainly calling her again next time.” S. Ritchie, Fauquier homeowner

Training for baseball is a lot more than just being coached and developing sport-specific skills, such as pitching, throwing, or hitting. Chris Forsten and his all-kinesiologist staff at Divergent Performance understand, and teach, that very well. They have been training baseball and softball players in physical fitness with a sport-specific approach for three years. Divergent Baseball was formed in 2014, a few years after Chris graduated from college and returned to Warrenton to join his family’s business, Old Town Athletic Club. Chris said, “Once I finished playing ball and studying at William & Mary, I came back to Warrenton, and became certified as a Performance Coach for the Parisi Speed School. Since I had spent many years on a baseball field, I wanted to stay involved in some way. Coaching baseball has allowed me to keep spreading the knowledge and the love of the game.” Thus, Divergent Baseball was born. “Divergent Baseball (now known as Divergent Performance) focuses on training the whole athlete, both body and mind. The first evaluation will include more than sport-specific skills, strengths, and weaknesses. We want to know about the individual’s diet and nutrition, their sleeping regimen, team workouts and training schedules. They are all important components to develop a plan for success,” said Chris. Chris expanded, “Many times, athletes and their parents want to begin training on specific skills during their first session, such as pitching, and we have to encourage them to take a more balanced approach. We need to evaluate the imbalances, inconsistencies and dysfunction that may have been created during the course of
the season and/or previous training. We have a strength performance program that Coach Matt Davenport designed to build muscle mass and bone density, which will make the athlete stronger, more resilient, and can help stave off injuries. We have a speed performance program that Coach Russell Hill directs which offers speed, power, mobility training and more. Yoga and Pilates can also do wonders for these athletes and challenge them in entirely different ways. We also create exercises for specific skills that are applicable to that particular athlete. For instance, we create movements that are very similar to the throwing action and start to teach mechanics without actually throwing a ball, in order to decrease overuse patterns.” Divergent Performance, which launched this June, is a combination of all the youth programs offered at the OTAC campus, from “Fit and Fun” for toddlers

all the way to performance training for college and professional athletes. “We are also continuing to expand our sports specific offerings,” said Chris. Chris said, “The number one thing we can accomplish at Divergent Performance is to make kids believe in themselves… that’s the core fundamental tool to progress. Once they start to believe, their potential can be unleashed. They start to see progress and results and they are motivated to figure out how they’re going to reach that next level. The strength, speed and movement education training helps to build confidence. Once the mindset changes for an athlete, they start to play the game differently, they start to approach life differently, they start to see the world in a different way and they start to realize their potential. That’s the most beautiful thing we can provide to any athlete.” otacfitness.com/programs/divergent

BEST EYE CARE PROVIDER
Samuel L. Weir and Associates Dr. Samuel Weir, Dr. Shannon Moore, and Dr. Lisa Butterfield aim to always put their patients first. Together, they form a very popular private practice in a cozy office setting which puts patients at ease, where they focus on providing personal attention and exceptional eye care to all their patients. “Our goal is to give affordable, high-quality eye care,” said Dr. Samuel Weir. This practice, which has been serving the community since 1979, offers a full range of optometrical services, and then some. To start with, they provide comprehensive exams, Lasik and cataract evaluations, glasses frames and lenses, contact lenses, pediatric eye exams and care, and emergency services. Beyond that, the doctors are also able to treat eye infections, glaucoma, remove foreign bodies from the eye, co-manage LASIK and cataract

surgery, monitor for progression of macular degeneration, and more. For eye surgeries, they have relationships with the most qualified opthamologists to refer patients to, and are able to co-manage post-surgical care. Dr. Weir prizes his staff, from office and support staff to optometrists, who he selects to be friendly, personable, outgoing, and patient-centered. “Fortunately we have a lot of stability here. I have been here almost 40 years, and Dr. Moore has been here 13 years, and Dr. Butterfield, three years. We look for people who are, first of all, board certified, but personality is also very important, and our doctors must be able to make the patient feel comfortable in the chair.” With a scope of patients from toddler to over 100, all three doctors are proficient in working with all ages of patients. The practice has a very loyal client base. Some families have been visiting Dr. Weir for three generations, and his patients come from near and far. “We have patients that come from as far away as Maryland and southwestern Virginia. I guess it’s because they get good treatment here. Some patients have insurance plans we don’t accept,

and they’ll still come in, and then file the paperwork on their own. I started here in ‘79, and some patients have been with us for over 30 years. Winning best of Warrenton in past years is a recognition from the public that we’re doing a pretty good job. It’s nice,” said Dr. Weir. Being part of, and supporting, the community is very important to Dr. Weir. “I’m very community-oriented, I’ve been with several organizations in town. We’ve lived here for 40 years, and I think it’s really important to give back to the community.” The practice supports four nonprofit charities: Wounded Warriors, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Infantsee, under which they provide free eye exams to infants, and Remington Lions Club, which collects and distributes eyeglass frames to those in need. Dr. Weir says of his practice: “We provide very personalized care: we spend time with the patients and get to know them during their exams. We are as thorough as possible. We’re not just trying to sell a pair of eyeglasses. We have the trust of our patients, and that is very valuable to us.”

Jesus Christ designed me for this and without him I would never have this amazing opportunity. Your life is a treasure to be lived and enjoyed to the full. Adding to the good of others, and experiencing the resulting joy that comes from sharing my talent is one of my many reasons to exist.

BEST PHYSICIAN OFFICE
Piedmont Family Practice Piedmont Family Practice in Warrenton is an independently owned and operated medical facility dedicated to providing the highest quality medical care to the community. Started in 1997 by a group of exceptional physicians, the practice is comprised of eight physicians, six Nurse Practitioners, three Physician Assistants, and one Certified Diabetic Educator. Their physicians include those that are board-certified in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, Lipidology, and Pediatrics. Dr. Steven Von Elten said, “I don’t think there’s another primary care practice in the state of Virginia that has the depth of certification and expertise behind it that we do. If you take the long list of our certifications, it’s quite unique; all those backgrounds and experiences lend a lot of strength to our practice.”

“Let our family care for your family” is the motto and core value of PFP. The providers and staff feeling and acting as a family translates to excellent and personalized care for their patients. And PFP’s family is a strong one. Dr. Golub said, “I think [the family atmosphere among our providers] comes down to trust, and this family has been together for a long period of time. We share the same core values, and it’s those values that create a work environment that empowers us to provides the best patient care. We want patients to feel those values from the moment they make that first phone call for an appointment.” PFP has remained an independent practice, which can be difficult in these days of larger, institutionalized care. This is crucial to the practice, according to the owners. Dr. Golub said, “We’re still independent, so we are able to keep that personal touch with our patients and our culture that we think is the framework of how health care should be delivered: oneon-one trusting service. One of the goals we have between ourselves as owners is to maintain that independence, because we

think that’s the best way to take our value system to our patients and the community.” In an effort to expand access to quality health care to their patients and the community, PFP launched Piedmont Urgent Care this year. Located in Suite 101B of the same building as PFP, PUC is designed to operate as a clinic that integrates seamlessly with the upstairs practice. From 8 a.m. - 8 p.m. every day, PUC treats patients on a first-come, first-served basis. Dr. Von Elten said, “One of the things that we think Piedmont Urgent Care offers is continuity of records and medical history, and continuity of providers. That, to us, is an essential element to providing high quality care. There is an emotional connection between doctor and patient, unlike going to a clinic where you don’t know anybody and they don’t know you.” PFP’s Project Coordinator Amanda Gertel said, “Our providers and staff work cohesively together toward a shared goal of serving every patient with respect and love. A powerful sense of dedication and mutual trust serves as the foundation of this practice.”

BEST EVENT VENUE
Airlie
Airlie has made itself known to locals and world travelers for the last 57 years. Its bucolic atmosphere with the lush backdrop of rolling hills, forest, and gardens, along with its close proximity to both urban and rural sites have attracted four-star generals, celebrities, Fortune 500 CEOs, professional athletes, and politicians. Local residents look to Airlie for a unique getaway, meeting place, or special meal. “Some people who have lived in the area for a long time still think of Airlie as a private conference center for government officials, and being ‘off-limits’ to anyone without a security clearance,” says Steve Wheat, Airlie’s marketing manager. “However, the truth is that Airlie is actually open to the public. Its business model has evolved over the past 57 years to include corporate meetings, weddings, company picnics, team building events, and weekend getaways.” Wheat says, “We have guests from just about every state. Internationally, guests

come from all parts of the world.” Many groups return every year, some multiple times throughout the year, and some for as long as the last fifty years. Airlie hosts conferences, meetings and retreats, with an average meeting size of 45 people and lasting two and a half days. Every year Airlie hosts approximately 650 events. Only 75 of these are weddings, according to Wheat. Annual events at Airlie include Fauquier County Wine Tasting & Competition, Easter brunch, Mother’s Day brunch, Earth Day celebration, turkeysto-go, breakfast with Santa, a holiday open house, Christmas Eve dinner, and New Year’s Eve dinner. Wheat shares that the holiday open house event is one that he looks forward to the most. “It gives us an opportunity to welcome the community to our property for a festive, family-friendly gathering,” he says. “It features caroling by elementary school choral groups, horse and carriage rides, and Santa. Tens of thousands of holiday lights adorn the formal gardens and property,” he says. Airlie’s food is as sought after as its ambiance. “Many restaurants and resorts claim to offer ‘field-to-table’ dining,” says
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
Wheat. “However, we actually deliver on this promise, as we live it every single day. The property includes a 20-acre production farm, a three-acre organic herb and flower garden, and 75 acres of pasture for Black Angus cattle and Berkshire pigs. The tons of vegetables that we harvest are used as ingredients by Airlie’s culinary team. The grass-fed beef and pork is served at our restaurant (Harry’s) and is also for sale to the public.” Airlie’s two restaurants offer breakfasts, dinners, and daily fare throughout the year, as well as holiday brunches. Lakeside dining and a variety of cocktails, draft beer, and wines add elegance to the food scene as well. The 300-acre property requires upkeep, but Wheat shares that guests appreciate the lush, scenic Virginia landscape and like to walk along nature trails and through the elaborate gardens during their stay. Sunlit ponds, lush gardens, rolling pastures, and wooded landscapes are all part of the beautiful outdoor space. On the inside, a British-royal décor is swept with a touch of traditional-English style and modern elegance, begging guests to stay just one more day.

BEST VETERINARY OFFICE
Piedmont Pets
40
{ AUGUST 2018 |
BY KARA THORPE
“Our goal is to take care of the patient, take care of the client, and the rest will take care of itself. If you do those two things, the business will follow, and the referrals will come,” said Wes Stickley, owner of Piedmont Pets Veterinary Care in Warrenton. Piedmont Pets has been a long time trusted veterinary resource in Warrenton, with previous owner Dr. Lutz being one of the most popular vets in the county for the previous 30 years. The reins were transferred to Wes Stickley in September 2016 when he and his wife Tracy purchased the business, and the practice has grown by double digits each month over the past year. Maintaining the reputation of the practice, with its small personal atmosphere, exceptional care, and reasonable prices, has been a priority for the Stickleys. The scope of the practice is large. They can provide almost all services necessary to the health of dogs and cats in house. The practice also maintains a relationship with a mobile board-certified surgeon who visits the practice when necessary, for more complicated or labor-intensive procedures. Stickley said, “Our clients love that they don’t have to drive far away to a specialist for the more complicated procedures, because they and their pets are comfortable here.” The veterinarians will even do local house calls, usually for elderly clients who cannot get their pets to the clinic. Being part of the community is vital to the success of his practice, Wes believes. “I think it’s important, even though I’m not a vet, that I get to know our clients. That’s why community involvement is so important to me: going to First Friday, banking here, and shopping here. We see a lot of our clients and patients during First Friday and other community events we attend. We also reach out to schools and students in the county. We’ll have students come over and shadow for a day. These are kids usually interested in becoming either a vet or a technician. They love it here and always ask if they can come back.” The practice includes two vets: Dr. Christopher Grams (pictured), who has been with the practice about a year, and and Dr.
Phil Washington, who joined the clinic about six months ago. They are both caring and experienced vets, said Stickley. “Dr. Grams is the kindest, gentlest, smartest vet…he has a calmness about him that really puts clients and patients at ease. The clients love him. He’s very confident and caring with an innate ability to communicate with both patient and client clearly. You might be the smartest veterinarian in the world, but if you can’t communicate with people, you’re not as effective. Dr. Lutz is working
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

on transitioning her longtime clients to the other veterinarians, and it’s been a very smooth transition. Our doctors work fantastically together, they’ll share concepts and bounce ideas off each other. They’re a really great team.” Hospital manager and licensed veterinary technician Amy and office manager Sue lead the team. “I’m very blessed to have a great staff. They love working here and it shows with clients and our patients,” said Stickley. piedmontpetsvet.com

Pediatric Hospitalists Care for Children 24/7 F auquier Hospital now provides around-the-clock, on-site physician expertise for pediatric patients. Hospitalists specializing in pediatrics will be available 24/7 throughout the hospital to provide medical expertise for babies and children. In the Family Birthing Center Eugene Suwandhi, M.D., pediatric medical director at Fauquier Health (pictured), explains that he and his fellow pediatric hospitalists will be catering to the needs of the pediatric population. The physicians’ main focus will be in the Family Birthing Center, assisting with deliveries where they are needed and making sure newborns are healthy. Any babies who are born with health issues will be admitted to the NICU, where the pediatric
hospitalists will oversee their care. If a newborn requires a higher level of care, the pediatric hospitalist can identify the problem and arrange for transfer to a tertiary facility in Fairfax or Charlottesville. In the Emergency Department Pediatric hospitalists will also be available for consultations on patient floors and in the Emergency Department. Dr.
Suwandhi says, “Pediatric patients are unique, they are not merely little adults. Certain diseases and conditions present differently in children and require different treatment.” For instance, he says, “Young children with pneumonia may have a fever and be fussy, but they don’t necessarily present with a cough, as adults do. Children younger than 5 present differently than those less than 2, and differently than those who are under a year. We may request blood work or X-rays earlier for a young child, depending on their symptoms.” Dr. Suwandhi says that when children get dehydrated, they may not want to drink. “We may have to intervene sooner to rehydrate them than we would with an adult.”
On the other hand, he says, doctors can wait longer with a child before administering antibiotics. “Children’s bodies are more pure, in the sense that their organs still function really well. Their bodies are capable of stopping infections better than adults. Many illnesses are self-resolving in children that in adults, would require interventions. And they may respond more quickly to medicines.” Dr. Suwandhi says there is another important difference between caring for children and adults: “With children, we administer weight-based medicine dosages; with adults, it is more often age-based.” Anyone with questions about the pediatric hospitalist program may call 540-316-5080. ❖

The Travis Project Saving lives through REVIVE training
BY PAM KAMPHUIS
W
ould you know what to do if someone you love overdosed on opioids? Did you know that anyone can treat an opioid overdose? Narcan®, the drug used to treat opioid overdoses, is available to the general public, and there’s a free local program that dispenses it at no charge, and teaches you how to use it. I sat down with Moira Satre, founder and chairman of Come As You Are (CAYA). CAYA is a local organization that, in addition to supporting local prevention programs, provides a safe and non-judgmental community to connect drug users and families to available resources. She explained the REVIVE Program, known locally as the Travis Project. THE ROOTS OF THE REVIVE PROGRAM The REVIVE Program began in 2013 when the Virginia General Assembly passed House Bill 1672 directing the Virginia Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS), in conjunction with the Virginia Department of Health, the Virginia Department of Health Professions, law enforcement, and the recovery community to conduct a pilot project on the administration of Naloxone, also known by its brand name, Narcan® to counteract the effects of an opioid overdose emergency.

REVIVE IN FAUQUIER COUNTY Calling the REVIVE program the Travis Project originated at the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Department. It was named in honor of Betty Ramsburg’s son, Travis Rose, who died from an overdose. When Satre and Caroline Folker of FODA started a continuation of the REVIVE workshops and started training people themselves, they also called their workshops The Travis Project. ACCESS TO NARCAN Narcan® is available without a prescription to the general public. It must be dispensed by someone who is certified and trained to give it out. Satre said, “Good laws have recently come into effect and what’s great about it is it’s increasing access to everybody and getting it into the hands of more everyday people who are dealing with this firsthand.”

HOW DOES NARCAN WORK? “Narcan®’s a great drug,” said Satre. “It’s almost perfect. The Narcan® has a stronger attraction to the opioid receptors in the brain, so it knocks the opioids off. This allows the person’s breathing and heart rate to resume to normal. It works very quickly, usually within two to five minutes.”

THE SAFETY OF NARCAN® “What’s great about it is that it’s very safe. You can’t overdose on it. It’s not going to hurt anyone. We tell the people we train to administer Narcan® if they even suspect someone is overdosing. Even if it turns out not to be an opioid overdose, it will not hurt them. It’s safe for pregnant women, children, and even dogs (law enforcement drug-sniffing dogs who have been exposed, for instance),” said Satre. WHAT ARE THE DRAWBACKS OF NARCAN®? “There are only two drawbacks,” said Satre. “First, it only works on opioids, not on other drugs or alcohol. And also, it’s very temporary, the effect only lasts for 35-45 minutes. After that time, the person can slip into a second overdose if they are not treated by first responders. A second dose of Narcan® can be given or multiple doses administered until help arrives. It’s crucial to call 911 and get immediate medical help after the first dose.” ADMINISTRATION OF NARCAN Narcan® is available in two forms: injectable and nasal spray. The nasal spray is the less expensive and most common version available to the public. It’s a nozzle not unlike nasal sprays for allergies. You just insert it into the nasal passage and press the button on the underside.

“What’s so great about teaching the class is that we are getting the knowledge and the Narcan® out there and it’s definitely saving lives.” THE GOAL OF THE TRAVIS PROJECT In a nutshell, the goal of REVIVE is to get Narcan® into as many hands as possible, and train as many people as possible to use it. The more people who are out there with it, the more lives can be saved. THE TRAVIS PROJECT REVIVE TRAINING The class is about an hour long and is held approximately monthly in Fauquier or the surrounding counties. In the class, they teach how to recognize the signs of an opioid overdose, and how to respond and give the Narcan® correctly. Through coordination with the health department, everyone who attends the class receives two doses of Narcan to take home. “We felt very strongly that we wanted to be able to teach the class and give them Narcan®, and not just send them away with nothing in their hands to arm themselves, to help. I think people are not as likely to go to the pharmacy after the class. If you give it to people for free then it’s going to get it into more hands than if you wait for people to go to the pharmacy where they either have to pay out of pocket or go through their insurance company.”

THOSE AT RISK FOR OVERDOSE
RECOGNIZING SIGNS OF AN OVERDOSE
• Someone who’s using alone. • Someone who’s overdosed previously. • Someone who’s been abstinent for some time. Maybe they’ve been in rehab or incarcerated or just in recovery. If they go back to using at the same dose they left off, at it can lead to an overdose. • Someone with underlying health conditions might be more susceptible to overdose. • Someone who is mixing different drugs and alcohol, compounding the problem.
The number one sign of an overdose is unresponsiveness. This is determined by pinching the person’s earlobe, or rubbing your knuckles really hard up and down their breastbone. If the person doesn’t respond, administer the Narcan.
WHO SHOULD CARRY NARCAN® Anyone and everyone. Opioid addiction is everywhere, and you never know when you might encounter it. Satre said, “The class is such an easy thing to do, and you could be anywhere, just walking down the street, and encounter someone overdosing. I think everyone should be trained, especially because we have such a crisis on our hands that the more people who are trained, the better. It gives someone another chance to get help.” Although it is possible to obtain Narcan® without training, Satre strongly recommends that everyone become trained to administer it. “The value of the training is that in the heat of the moment you’ll be more comfortable administering it. If you take the course, you feel a lot more comfortable acting in an emergency.”❖
WHAT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF A SUSPECTED OVERDOSE Even if you’re not sure the problem is opioids, you can administer the Narcan® since it has no other side effects. • Check for responsiveness. Check for breathing (look, listen and feel for breaths) • Administer Narcan® • Place person in recovery position (on their side, head pillowed on hands, top leg bent and extended) • Call 911 • Initiate rescue breathing • Assess and respond based on outcome of first Narcan® administration. WHAT NOT TO DO IN THE EVENT OF AN OVERDOSE Do not treat an overdose like you would treat someone who’s drunk. Do not put them in a cold shower, and do not try to get them to vomit. WHERE TO GET NARCAN® Narcan is available for purchase at pharmacies and the local Health Department, and at no charge through the Travis Project at CAYA. A prescription is not necessary in Virginia. REVIVE WORKSHOPS The next REVIVE Workshop will be held Monday August 27 at 6 p.m. at the Warrenton Recovery Center, 30 John Marshall St. Warrenton. The class is free of charge, but please sign up at cayacoalition.org. REVIVE classes are scheduled approximately once a month throughout the area. To find out where and when future classes are scheduled, visit cayacoalition.org or rrcsb.org.

Kids and Strength Training It’s about building more than muscle BY ZACH HACKERSON NEXT LEVEL PERFORMANCE COACH ACSM CERTIFIED PERSONAL TRAINER
A
s a strength coach, I talk to a lot of kids and their parents and hear many misconceptions about childhood fitness, particularly as it relates to weight training (also known as resistance training or strength training). Concerns from parents about it stunting their child’s growth, making their child bulky, or that it’s dangerous. None of those concerns are valid, and there’s plenty of science to support that strength training, when done correctly, has many benefits both physical and mental. It typically takes 8-12 weeks to see marked improvement in young athletes’ coordination and performance through change of direction drills, acceleration and deceleration drills, plyometric or jump training, and lifting weights through basic movement patterns. Getting stronger and learning these athletic movements increases the chance of an athlete earning more playing time and decreases the risk of injury.

Further, kids who strength train stand with improved posture, benefit from increased explosive power, and have an edge up on the competition as they age. Science also shows that strength training not only helps improve selfesteem, academic focus, and executive function in children, it increases a child’s likelihood of continuing exercise as a lifelong habit. A recent report by the National Institutes of Health found that

“physical activity significantly related to improved cognition in children,” and “the effect of that activity was greatest for middle school and young elementary age children.” With the rise of school related anxiety in children, strength training has been proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety such as poor sleep quality and mental distress. Strength training has also been proven to improve brain cognition; meaning that your child can improve

child develops into his or her teenage years, weight training will result in an improvement in body composition. Because weight training also helps improve conditions like high blood pressure, elevated cholesterol, and obesity, we encourage inactive children or those not playing sports to strength train as well. Using an InBody scan we have tracked marked improvement in body composition with several of our youth fitness participants who were facing weight issues. And, we have found that even in kids with physical
program that follows the recommended guidelines and precautions is safe and effective for children. When choosing a program for your child, and for the sake of safety, make sure the coach controls the amount of weight lifted and the modality utilized. Kids should not try strength training on their own, or by watching online videos. Be sure the training is always supervised by an experienced and certified strength coach that teaches your child proper technique, the purpose and benefit of the exercises, as well as safe and respectful gym behavior. Performed in a safe environment with proper load, weight training will increase strength, but not muscle size. As your
disabilities, strength training is a reasonable and beneficial protocol. We have worked with numerous youths with disabilities, including a young man with cerebral palsy. His strength has improved to the point that he is reaching his goal of walking with one crutch. I like to say that the iron belongs to everybody, and I know that his self esteem and confidence has risen because he is doing strength training. One thing we hear from college coaches and our athletes that have gone on to play collegiate sports, is that those athletes who strength train are better prepared for the rigors of playing at the collegiate level. They demonstrate increased performance on the field, and benefit

With a well qualified coach and a structured program designed for your child’s age and development, strength training is completely safe and beneficial. In fact, the American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Sports Medicine, American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine, and the National Strength and Conditioning Association all agree that a supervised strength training

The fact is, strength training has many benefits. Your child will have improved athletic performance, increased confidence, and better health overall. At Next Level, we work with youth who want to be competitive athletes, as well as kids who want a good time in a non-competitive environment. So as long as you are working with a qualified coach, your child will stay safe, enjoy the experience, and develop skills and habits that will stay with them for the rest of their life. ❖

Empty Nester Preparing for this inevitable and sometimes difficult role BY MICHELLE KELLEY, LCSW
I
s your last child about to leave home? Maybe he/she has already relocated and you’re feeling sad, worried, or lost. You may even feel excited and hopeful for what’s to come. The next chapter of your life can be a time filled with new opportunities and experiences, or it can be pretty rough. It’s common to experience mixed emotions during this transition period. The key to a smooth transition is to, first of all, emotionally prepare — even years in advance. Second, stay mindful of your emotions, and third, stay connected to others who have gone through or are getting ready to go through this transition period. Empty nest syndrome is not a diagnosis but a phenomenon where parents experience sadness and loss when the last child leaves home — regardless of the age. Although you may be encouraging your children to gain independence, letting go can be painful. You may miss your children taking part in your daily lives as well as their companionship. For most, the empty nest transition period is short

lived. It’s important to create an atmosphere of hope and excitement for yourself and your child — remembering that your feelings will wax and wane and this is normal. It’s a bit of a roller coaster ride. I know. Currently, I’m experiencing this transition. My youngest child has one year left of high school and my oldest child left for college several years ago. As a mother, I want nothing more than for my children to launch into their future with excitement and confidence but at the same time, I feel apprehensive about the next phase of life for me. As a single woman, I have

an opportunity to make some real changes in my life. I struggle with questions such as: “Do I move?”, “Do I travel more?”, or “Do I work more?” I know it’s important to stay with the questions and not settle on an answer right away. I will need time and lots of self care. For many, self care during child rearing years fell to the bottom of the list, so now would be a good time to focus on your own needs and wants. What else can we do to get through this difficult process? Take time for self reflection — long before children depart. We all know it’s coming, so it’s best to emotionally prepare and not stick your head in the sand. My youngest daughter will leave in about a year and I started emotionally preparing for her departure last year. During self reflection, you will likely experience a range of emotions and thoughts. The key is to allow yourself to feel and think without judgment or pressuring yourself to come up with a solution. This is referred to as mindful meditation. Your children leaving is not a problem, so there is no solution. Transition periods are a natural part of life.

Keep in touch — even though they are off on their own (sort of), they will still appreciate texts and occasional video chats (thank goodness for technology). You will need to know your child; some may want more contact than others and it’s necessary to respect their desires. It’s also important for parents to remind themselves that their children are starting a new chapter, and lack of contact from their children should not be taken personally. You do not want to add to their emotional stress by making them feel responsible for your emotions. Seek support from family, friends, or counselors. It’s normal to feel concerned, especially if you are not sure if your child can function independently. You may have strongly identified with your role as a parent and you will have a difficult time adjusting to an empty nest. Also, your child may benefit from support and reassurance before and after they leave. Consider new possibilities. You may be thinking about going off in an entirely new direction, or finally enroll in that painting class you’ve been thinking about. It can also be
an opportunity for you and your partner to focus more on each other. Converse with other parents who have gone through or who are experiencing this transition. If you feel you cannot shake your feelings of sadness or you’re finding it hard to move on, it may be time to speak with a counselor. Although empty nest syndrome affects both parents, it primarily impacts women because it’s a time when women typically experience a shift in roles. Many women have spent the childrearing years being all things to all people — endless caretaking, doing, and hustling, always making others a priority. It can be difficult for many women to stop “caretaking.” The reality is that our children still need us when they leave home. They need us emotionally, and we still need them. Role shifts are challenging. Stay open to possibilities. Remember to listen to yourself, your intuition, your needs, and to reflect, rejoice in your successes, and honor your mistakes. It’s important for our children to be assured that we will be okay when they leave. Many children worry about their parents, especially if they see a parent as unhappy or unfulfilled. A benefit of being an empty nester is watching our children mature and gain independence as we learn how to interact with them in more of an adult-like manner. You will also have more time to focus on your own needs. There are endless possibilities: it can be a time for play, a time to change jobs/careers, a time to make a difference, and a time for you. We can’t turn back time, but we can march forward with honesty, self compassion, courage, and an openness to what may come next. We don’t need to know exactly what the future holds, but we do need to start reflecting and start having this very important conversation with ourselves, our friends, and our family. Every transition period is a fresh start with an opportunity for growth. Now I’m getting excited, but if you ask me tomorrow, I may be sad again. ❖

How do you ask your dog to sit? To stay? To lie down?
M
Consistency is Underrated Defining the Human Side of Dog Training BY CHARLOTTE HARVEY

any people unconsciously confuse their dogs by using different commands for one behavior, or using the same command for multiple behaviors. For instance, if your dog’s cue to lie down is “down,” using the word “down” in another context, such as commanding your dog to get “down” off the couch, will only confuse him. And why wouldn’t it? Training dogs can be confusing, to both dog and owner. One thing that can help immensely is consistency on the part of the owner. Consistency denotes that the owner speaks commands and rewards their dog’s behavior exactly the same way every single time he responds correctly to a command, and does not reward the dog if he responds incorrectly. This can be hard! What dog owners need to understand is that they have to work on the consistency of their own behavior, before they can lead their dog to success. Consistency goes far beyond repeating the same thing over and over again. This means working on focusing and refining your own skills just as much, if not more so, than
“your dog can only perform as well as you can communicate.” on your dog’s behavior. The more consistent you can be, the easier it is for your dog to pick up on what you are asking him to do. One of the biggest challenges in dog training is training yourself to be consistent with your dog. Here are some suggestions to improve the human side of dog training:
1
Pre-determine which commands to use for specific behaviors. Some people may use “here” for a recall, others use “come.” Owners may use “down” to stop their dog from jumping up whereas others use “off.” People confuse the difference between “stay” and “wait” on a regular basis. Want to keep your dog from losing their mind? Make sure to make a list and define which commands go with specific behaviors. Inform friends, family members, and any pet professionals as to which commands you use in order to limit confusion for your dog.
2
Keep your tone of voice the same. Many owners will say a command the same way a few times, but then escalate when a lack of response or frustration sets in. Changing the tone, cadence, and pitch will likely confuse your dog. Yes, as humans, we have different inflections, but as soon as the command sounds different, your dog will be baffled. In order to ensure consistency, say commands in a calm and natural tone, and stick with it.
3
Keep commands to the same number of syllables and length. Similar to change in tone, sometimes owners will stretch, shorten, or alter words based on their level of excitement, frustration, or approval. Owners who are trying to encourage their dog may lengthen the “down” command to sound like “doooown” while their dog is learning, but switch to a shorter version later on. This can confuse your dog, because the words sound completely different. The same goes with “come” versus “come here.” Pick one way of saying the command and stick with it, so both you and your dog know what you mean.
4
Dogs are better visual than auditory learners, which is why professionals recommend the majority of behaviors be taught using both a vocal and visual cue. Ensure to keep hand signals consistent as well — do you hold up one finger or the whole hand for “sit”? Do you hold your hand out for “stay,” or just show your dog a flat palm for a second before lowering it? Do you have a visual command for each behavior? It will help a lot for your dog to see what you want them to do as well as hear it, so make sure to keep a consistent visual cue as well.
5
Do not reward your dog when he performs the wrong behavior for a command. If you ask your dog to “sit,” but then he lays down, it is vital to not reinforce this incorrect response, no matter how cute it might have been. By rewarding for incorrect associations, you are simply confusing your dog and potentially creating a frustrating situation in which your dog will try any behavior at a command. Want to refine those skills? Using a short 10 second time-out from training will further help your dog discriminate between a correct and incorrect behavior.
Training requires teamwork in order to be successful. We often agonize over our dog’s response rate when truthfully, we need to reassess and consider our own training skill set. Keep in mind, your dog can only perform as well as you can communicate. Understanding consistency and follow-through can drastically impact your relationship with your dog. ❖

Warrenton’s Favorite Bookstore The community-supported Book Cellar helps residents build home libraries and supports library programs STORY BY AIMÉE O’GRADY PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE
N
ine-year-old Carys Petty was an early reader at three years old. “I couldn’t believe how well she could read at such a young age,” recalls her mother, Leanne Petty. Petty and her husband, Dave, were eager to fan that flame that they saw lit in her. “We wanted to keep her surrounded by books so there was one for her to grab and read whenever she wanted,” says Petty. The Pettys turned to a community resource, The Book Cellar, to help build Carys’ reading library. In 1999, a library volunteer proposed opening a bookstore in the basement of the John Barton Payne Building, which used to house the county’s library. “Up until this time the Friends of the Fauquier Library hosted an annual book sale,” says Maria Del Rosso, Director of the Fauquier County Public Library. “The proposal was approved by the library board and a bookstore opened for one day each month and from there, it just grew.” The Book Cellar, which will celebrate its 20th anniversary next year, is a program of the Friends of the Fauquier Library and helps support library reading programs. Run entirely by volunteers, The Book Cellar donates all sales, which can amount to as much as $30,000 annually, to the Friends of the Fauquier Library. Despite relying exclusively on donations, having books to sell has never been an issue. “The community has helped build, grow, and maintain The Book Cellar; it is a communitysupported resource,” says Del Rosso. “Every library in the county is a drop off location for used books. People also bring their own donations directly to The Book Cellar,” says volunteer Judy Hagerman, former Executive Director for the Fauquier

SPCA. “I retired from the SPCA six years ago and found a void in my life. My mother was a librarian, so I was raised around books and developed a passion for them. Volunteering at The Book Cellar seemed like a logical opportunity.” Hagerman helps recruit volunteers, who must be 18 years of age or older and commit to one 3 ½-hour shift each month. The Book Cellar is open Fridays and Saturdays from 10 a.m. – 5 p.m., with a lot of behind-thescenes work done during off hours. “We receive an average of 15 boxes of donated books every week. These are all sorted by category, added to our inventory, priced, and shelved by a prep team of five volunteers,” says Hagerman. The Book Cellar currently has 24 dedicated book-loving volunteers who donate their time to the store. In the fall of 2017, the Friends decided that, after two decades, the store needed a makeover. Hoping to reduce inventory, the used book operation moved to a temporary location in Old Town Warrenton for an overstock sale. The twelve-week sale generated $13,000 for the library and cleared the way to restock The Book Cellar with all new items. In January of this year, The Book Cellar reopened with a new approach to stocking and selling books. Each week, at least 500 to 600 books and other materials are added to the shelves. Anything not sold in six weeks is marked for a quick sale. The Friends added comfortable seating, more light, and colorful signage. Nowadays, there’s more room to display books, a feature that attracts readers and translates into more sales. “We want people to know that this is a place for them to come spend time in. They are welcome to bring in their coffee, browse the books at their leisure, and stay awhile,” says Del Rosso. “We worked to create a pricing strategy that would make the books very affordable,” says Del Rosso. The prices range from 50 cents for a paperback to a $1 for hardcover, with leeway for books known to be worth a little more. Gently used audio books, DVDs and CDs range from $1 - $2. The Book Cellar helps to make sure that every household in the community can own a few books. For families with children who are voracious readers, like Carys, that’s a good thing. “We wanted to keep Carys stocked with books, and with The Book Cellar, we were able to build her a little library,” says Petty.

Every dollar that comes through The Book Cellar from the sale of a book comes back to the community through library programs such as the annual summer reading program, book clubs for adults, monthly Sunday with the Library events, STEAM, and OWLs (Older, Wiser Learners), to name but a few. The Friends of the Fauquier Library is proud of the Book Cellar and the way it fills a tremendous need. Greg Mayer, Friends Board Member and a Book Cellar volunteer, says the store fills an important need in the county. “It helps encourage people to read by offering books at outstanding prices,” he says. Mayer has observed regulars both near and far that he has come to know during the nine years that he has been volunteering: “We have a couple who come from out of state to visit family and when they do, they make it a point to stop by The Book Cellar.” For the Pettys, it doesn’t take long to see where the money they spent in The Book Cellar, has gone. As frequent library users, Carys can be found at a SPLAT (Science, Play, Language Arts, and Technology) program or attending one of the summer programs such as Drew Blue Shoes. All thanks to some old books that were read, loved, and donated rather than left to gather dust. ❖

ack to school shopping ranks right up there with Christmas as a major budget buster for families. This year, parents with children in grades K-12 are expected to spend an average of $501.00 on everything from clothing to paper and pencils, and many will spend much more. But all that shopping doesn’t need to break the bank. One great way to spend less is to shop in consignment stores. These days, consignment stores offer the latest styles from name brands at a savings of 50% to 70% per item. And you won’t believe how many items you’ll find with the original tag still attached! Consignment shopping is good for the environment and even better for your budget. And if your kids have any concern they won’t be totally on-trend, check out the following pages for of-the-moment looks that were styled right off the racks at Do You DejaVu Consignment in Warrenton, and Stuff! Consignments in Gainesville.
For a young, preppy look, Connor is wearing flat front khakis from Bonabos and a Vineyard Vines button-down Oxford. Sarah is wearing J. Crew floral shorts with a light blue plaid blouse and Hunter Original Tall Wellington boots in aubergine. A printed messenger bag completes her easy, casual look.
These two are picture-perfect proof that youth and style can absolutely be synonymous. Olivia is wearing black skinny jeans with J. Crew three-tone flats and a two-tone leather jacket over a rust colored tank. A large, vintage leather carrier completes her look. Max is stylish in red shorts and a striped navy tee topped with a plaid shirt left unbuttoned for a super casual look.
For a look that’s a little edgier, Olivia is in a shoulder cut romper paired with a denim jacket and crepe leather sneakers. Rompers are everywhere and will be with us all through the fall season. Max looks sharp in Levi’s jeans and a plaid, button-down shirt paired with Vans sneakers.
For these two young beauties, we picked easy going, on-trend outfits. Savannah is in a blue printed romper, short denim jacket, and cool Sperry topsiders (next to which she's placed a pretty patchwork tote). Mary is in a super cute and age appropriate Zara dress complemented by a Vera Bradley backpack.

Rooted in Quality: Nature’s Wellspring STORY BY NATALIE ORTIZ AND JESSICA LESEFKA | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE
“We started with one goal in mind, to help others find wellness using the gifts of nature,” said Nichole and James Brown of Nature’s Wellspring, an online organic plant and garden supply business based in Warrenton. The business is committed to helping the community find wellness in the form of nature, providing seeds and started plants to help residents of the surrounding area to have their own little slices of nature in their backyards. As a veteran, James Brown’s service has earned them the “Homegrown by Heroes” label for their business. “As we all know in today's world, we experience regular exposure to toxins, pesticides, radiation, and chemicals from daily product usage and even from our food sources. As a result, our society is facing an increase in inflammatory illnesses and allergic conditions which include a rise in food allergies and sensitivities. Unfortunately, our family has been personally affected by many of these, especially the development of lifethreatening food allergies. Allergy foods are very expensive, thus we began growing more and more of our own produce. This incredible wellness journey led us to the

creation of our company,” said the Browns. The Browns are dedicated to helping their customers grow healthy food for themselves in their own gardens by providing allergyfriendly, nature-based products. They recommend the use of natural, non-GMO heirloom seeds, which they use to start their custom grown plants and herbs, and follow only organic, sustainable farming practices. Nature’s Wellspring is a proponent of square foot gardening, which is the practice of creating small, orderly, and highly productive gardens by dividing the growing area into small sections, typically in 12” squares. Seeds or seedlings of each kind of vegetable are planted in one or more of the one-foot squares, at a density based on plant size. The square foot gardening method is estimated to cost 50 percent less, use 20 percent less space, use 10 percent less water, and require only 2 percent of the work compared to single row gardening. Additional benefits are that the density of the crops prevents weed growth, and no digging, tilling, or heavy tools are necessary. Sound good? out. Specializing in soil preparation, they work with clients to plan their gardens and offer advice on implementation. They offer custom grown started plants for local delivery or pickup, which is a convenience for those who don’t want to start the seeds themselves. Nature’s Wellspring is dedicated to their customers and they love helping others succeed with their gardens. “Gardening is most successful when the gardener takes time to plan, has patience, and embraces experimentation. Enjoy the experience and learn from your mistakes as well as your successes,” the Browns recommend. Nature’s Wellspring’s website also offers specialty products such as Cowpots (biodegradable, 100 percent renewable plant pots), homemade calcium powder, homegrown organic herbs, essential oils, EPF supplements, cut flowers, allergy friendly food, gardening supplies, and herbal infused salt rubs and bath salts. What Makes a Hike Memorable? A
H I K E R ’ S
T R E A S U R E D T R E K S BY ANDREAS A. KELLER
E
very hike is different, but some stick in one’s memory as particularly special adventures. It is usually something unexpected — a particular challenge on the trail or with the weather, perhaps the sighting of a mother bear with her cubs, an overlook that is flooded with the season's glory — or maybe it's simply the company, special time spent in the great outdoors with friends or family. I have several memorable hikes I’d like to share with you. Blowdowns on Broad Hollow/Pine Hill Gap Hike This past May, a group of us, with our dogs in tow, started on a moderate hike of about seven miles with a 1,600 feet elevation gain to enjoy the orchid bloom on Broad Hollow/Pine Hill Gap, hidden in a back corner of the Shenandoah National Park. Nestled between Old Rag, Catlett, and Hazel Mountains, the trail runs along Broad Hollow Run, which offers a pleasant set of cascades. We knew that this past spring, with its unusual weather pattern, had sent tornadoes through the area,
breaking trees in half and ripping others totally out of the ground, so we weren't sure what to expect. However, when we arrived at the trailhead and saw the many huge, freshly-cut tree trunks of old growth hemlock and wild oak, we felt reassured and relieved that the trail had been cleared of all the blowdowns. We paused for awhile and stood in both awe and gratitude, appreciating all the hard work that had been performed by the volunteer trail maintenance crew. At the halfway point of our hike, however, it was obvious that the blowdowns and debris had not been cleared from the entire trail. Our path was totally obstructed. With the results of nature’s fury on full display, we had to climb over or crawl under fallen trees, or bushwhack around huge root systems and through bushes. Struggling through this tangled mess challenged our physical strength and flexibility, but offered many hilarious pictures of hikers either stuck on a tree or belly-crawling under big trunks. There was a lot of laughter and shouting as we
helped each other negotiate the wilderness. Our return to the trailhead was slow and tiring, but we all knew this was a hike that was unlikely to be forgotten, even by our dogs, who had no trouble sleeping all the way home. Torrential Rains on Duncan Knob A sunny day with a cool breeze makes for perfect hiking weather. A grey and drizzly day, on the other hand, tends to accelerate one’s hiking pace in the hope of avoiding a potential downpour. However, for a multi-day backpacking trip with a heavy load on one’s back, the pace remains steady in the knowledge that there is no bad weather, only bad gear. On a recent backpacking trip in the George Washington National Forest, a group of us tackled the wet and boggy trails on Duncan Knob Hollow. At times, we had to take our boots off to ford swollen creeks. By the time we reached the campsite, the clouds were getting heavy and dark. We pitched our tents and hurried up the rock scramble which led to the summit of
Duncan Knob. We wanted to check out the vista before a likely downpour would rob us of its expansive views. The rock scramble was fairly treacherous, but the breathtaking view from the outcrop at the summit made it all worth it. After a while, the first raindrops suddenly began falling, so we swiftly scurried and scrambled all the way down over slippery and wobbly rocks to arrive back at our tents. Our legs were shaking so badly when we got back that we all agreed that this was the last time we would ever hike Duncan Knob at that speed. Huddled together under a tarp, we ate a cold dinner and rapidly retreated into our tents as the rain got stronger. By eight o’clock, heavy rain was pouring, and I was comfortably relaxing in the middle of my waterproof tent, reading a book. The steady prattling of the rain was making me sleepy, but when I reached for the pillow to go to sleep, it was sopping wet, and so was my quilt. With a flashlight, I began to search for the location of the leak and discovered a small puddle of water on the tent floor. Lightning and thunder moved closer, and suddenly the rain became torrential, which enabled me to identify a couple of very small tears in my single-wall tent where water was leaking through. I began to apply repair tape and watched with fascination and dismay as the water found its way around every piece of tape I applied and into my tent. The downpour continued unabated. I had used up all my repair tape, but water continued to drip relentlessly into the tent. When I noticed a similar tear at the foot of the tent, I decided to just get some sleep and let nature have its way. Wrapping myself in
my poncho, I closed my eyes and floated off to a dreamland where I was soaking up the sun and drinking fancy cocktails next to a Caribbean swimming pool. By daybreak, the rain had finally stopped. For me, even though it was one long, arduous night, the exhilaration of making it through made this trip one of my most memorable hiking experiences. And, by the way, the tent company happily repaired my tent when I told them my saga. Passing on a Legacy Many years ago, I was hiking the blue-blazed White Oak Canyon Trail on a Sunday morning. Surprisingly, there were hardly any other hikers around. On a steep incline, however, I was overtaken by two young children holding hands who were seemingly
alone and moving at a very fast clip. I looked behind me and eventually saw another hiker moving uphill. It was the mother of the two children. We shared the trail for a bit and I learned that the young hikers were four and six years old. Curious as to how she encouraged her children to become such energetic hikers she said, “It’s easy, we take our children on the trail every week. My husband is a Park Ranger and hiking as a family is part and parcel of how we bring up our children. Their father is waiting at the trail intersection up ahead, and we'll all have lunch together.”
{ AUGUST 2018 |
Being a hiking enthusiast, I took that to heart. Years later, when I became a grandfather, the first gift for the new parents was a child carrier backpack, with the promise that when my granddaughter turned three years old she would become my hiking buddy. And so it came to be that I experienced my most memorable hike, and the first of many to come with my granddaughter. We all met at the trailhead of Conway Robinson State Forest in Gainesville for an ambitious two-mile trek. The obvious challenge was how to motivate a three year old to walk that far, and we fully expected our family hike to come to an end within half a mile. Luckily, Lady Boots, my patient Bernese mountain dog, started the hike by walking next to my granddaughter who, in turn, enjoyed “leading” her. The sighting of squirrels, listening to bird songs, naming the colors of flowers, and spotting the trail blazes on the trees kept this three year old entertained and moving forward for about a mile. And then came a full mile of running and hiding behind trees to surprise her parents with excited shouts and laughter. As she started to tire, a few songs helped get the little hiker back to the car, and in minutes she was asleep for the ride home. Of all my memorable hikes of hearty laughter, strong challenges, and exquisite beauty, this special hike with a very special three year old is my favorite to date! ❖

Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement Earning college credit in high school can reduce future tuition costs BY PAM KAMPHUIS
E
very parent who would like their child to go to college thinks the same thing. How on earth are we going to pay for it? If you have a good student, there are ways to start saving on college expenses when your student is still in high school. Fauquier County High Schools offer a few different ways for students to obtain college credits in high school at a substantial savings: Dual Enrollment classes (DE), Advanced Placement classes (AP), and Mountain Vista Governor’s School. Many students take advantage of these options. According to Mark Bjorkman, Fauquier High School Guidance Director, Fauquier High School students earned over 3,000 hours of college credit last year. One 2017 FHS graduate who took both AP and DE classes ended up walking into college as a sophomore. Another student who attended Mountain Vista Governor’s School walked into William and Mary as a junior. Bjorkman said, “I had one young man who was a Governor’s School student who attended Carnegie Mellon and he earned his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in four years, which probably saved $50,000-75,000.” Going into college with credits already built up may mean that the student does not have to take some of the core classes that all colleges require, usually in the freshman and sophomore years. It can also mean that

there can be less pressure on the student to take a full roster of classes each semester, in the event that they want to do something else such as maintain a job or play sports, or participate in an internship. It also could enable them to graduate early, and/or apply to grad school sooner. So which way should you encourage your student to go? AP? Dual enrollment? Governor’s School? Probably the most confusing thing about AP and DE classes is untangling the similarities and differences. The differences are perhaps the less confusing of the two, and are in the admission process, the enrollment process, the way they are scored, and the way colleges evaluate them. Dual enrollment means that students are taking college classes for college

credit while they are in high school. So they are essentially enrolled in Lord Fairfax Community College at the same time as they are enrolled in their local high school. Colleges will look at the courses the student takes, and the grade earned, as college courses, and each school will individually decide if the credits will transfer or not, just as if you were a college student looking to transfer to their school from another college. Bjorkman said, “Taking a course as DE is a hugely substantial savings per credit hour. The cost for six credit hours (one class) at LFCC last year was $265.28. Compare that to the cost of credit hours at a full time college, and it’s a staggering difference.” The student will also receive high school credit for the class. Enrolling in the class involves applying to LFCC, and will involve a placement test unless the student has earned a certain score on the SAT or ACT. AP class scores are determined by a national test at the end of the year, which all students across the nation take at exactly the same time. Scores range from 1-5, with 5 being the highest score. Different colleges will evaluate the student’s score to determine if they will receive credit for the class or not. Some may not give credit for the class, but will exempt you from that particular general education requirement. AP students who take the national exam at the end of the year are awarded one extra point towards their high school GPA for each AP course passed. The similarities are what can confuse the issue. For Fauquier High School students, both DE and AP classes are taught at the high school (not at the college), by high school teachers who are certified to teach AP and college classes, i.e., with a master’s degree in the subject. Here’s the confusing part: Some classes are offered with the option of enrolling for either (or both) DE and AP credit. If that is the case, they are the same class. In Fauquier County, if a class is offered as both an AP and a DE class, it will be taught in one classroom by the same teacher at the same time. For instance, AP United States Government and Politics is also offered as a DE. So students taking it for AP credit are in the
}
same class with those taking it as a DE course. The curriculum is the same, it is exactly the same course for students taking it for AP credit as for students taking it for DE credit. So, for the classes that offer both, the student can take both options, taking it as a college course via DE, and also taking the AP exam at the end of the year. Why? You’re covering two bases: some colleges may take the AP score but not let the DE credit transfer, and vice-versa. Also, in Fauquier County, the high school pays for each student enrolled in an AP class to take the exam at the end of the year. So, with that extra point added to your GPA for taking the exam, there is no reason, except perhaps for senioritis, not to take advantage of the AP exam. Fauquier High School encourages students to take advantage of both opportunities: Bjorkman says, “Over 70 percent of the kids last year who were in AP/DE classes were dual enrolled as well as taking the class for AP credit.” So what is Governor’s School? Mountain Vista Governor’s School is a regional public school program focusing on math, science, and technology for gifted high school sophomores, juniors, and seniors. The classes are held in the mornings at LFCC, taught by certified high school teachers, and the students return to their high school for afternoon classes. There is a rigorous testing and application process, completed during the student’s freshman year. The value, for the purpose of this article, is that most MVGS classes are offered as DE and AP as well. Bjorkman said, “We have always stressed the dual enrollment. With our kids who have money issues, we can get scholarships from LFCC where they’ll pay partial tuition. We try to do anything we can to help kids afford dual enrollment. We have to be proactive.” Bjorkman concludes, “As a parent I encourage you to be aggressive to gain information from your base high school, LFCC, and colleges of interest as to how dual enrollment classes can be helpful. The bottom line is that a challenging curriculum and the rigor of Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes will prepare your students for life after high school, and may also save you money at the same time.” ❖

A Window Into Warrenton’s Past
Life on Corbin Lane STORY BY AIMÉE O’GRADY PHOTOS BY DOUGLAS GRAHAM

Today the street bears the name of its long-time resident, Alan Corbin, who lives in a newer home adjacent to the original building. uilt into the side of Waters Mountain in Bethel, an old root cellar sits, nearly indiscernible from the road, vines and overgrowth beginning to take it over. Built in the mid-1930s by Mr. William Gill, the root cellar was used by the family that lived in an old cabin beside it. The small hands of a 10-year-old boy helped build the root cellar. He earned ten cents each day for his help. “It was enough to buy a coca-cola and ball of candy,” says Alan Corbin, the man who grew into those small hands, with a smile. Corbin’s story is a window into the Warrenton of days gone by. Having lived in Warrenton all his life, he is a treasure trove of information about the way life used to be in the area in the first half of the 20th century. Corbin has lived at the corner of Corbin Lane just north of Warrenton since his

father, tired of working on a farm, bought a small house there in 1927, when Corbin was two years old. His father tragically died in 1932 from a brain tumor, leaving his widow with four young boys, ages 7 to 14, to raise. Corbin was the youngest. “We struggled,” he says of making ends meet. “My mother had a large garden and canned what she could. We boys went out to find work.” As a result, none of the boys finished high school. At age seven, Corbin spent his summer working as a corn thinner, “the hardest job in the world,” according to him. “Three kernels were planted, but the farmer only wanted two stalks,” he says. “We would walk through the fields pulling the smallest stalk. If it broke, we used a digger fashioned from a stick to dig up the root.” He made $1 a day for this laborious work beneath the hot summer sun. “I came home and walked straight to my mother to give her the dollar. We needed it to survive.” Another neighbor was a source of work for the Corbin boys. About a quarter mile down the road sits Drake Castle, now called Humblestone. “They owned a lot of land, and many of these homes around here were originally small tenant homes for the farm workers,” explained Corbin. He and his brothers would comb the woods belonging to the castle to collect berries for the Drakes. “We gathered 30 gallons one time,” he recalls. “I earned thirty cents for each gallon, that was good money,” he says with a reminiscent smile. Another local family, the Woods, owned a retrofitted bus they used as a traveling country store called The Rolling Store at Your Door, which was yet another source of employment for Corbin as a boy. One of its stops was near the Corbin home. “They would take me to their home in Greenwich [Vint Hill] to work for a week. They would pick me up on a Thursday when they made their stop here, and then
Alan can still be found working outside in his garden and tending to his lawn, although these days he can go inside and enjoy the air conditioning when it gets too hot.
drop me back off the following Thursday,” he says. In 1942, at age 17, he began driving the mobile store for the Woods. “When the store owners in the small towns launched a petition to stop the traveling store, the Woods took delivery orders instead and I dropped them off,” he recalls. Corbin also worked the Washington D.C. farmers market for the Woods, waking up at 3 a.m. to load the bus with eggs and chickens. Corbin was employed by the Woods until one Friday in 1944 when he dropped a bowling ball on his ankle, breaking it and requiring 10 weeks in a cast to heal. Corbin missed the draft the first time he was called because of a failed physical. “I had asthma,” he says. The second time he was called, he passed and spent two years serving in the Navy during WWII. Following his military service, Corbin worked for the ESSO Station (which was located where McDonalds stands now) for 18 years and then began employment at Quarles Oil Company, where he remained for over 30 years. He worked directly for Mr. Doug Quarles, Jr., when it was still a family-owned business. “He was a good man, and he wasn’t afraid to roll his sleeves up and work beside you,” he said of Mr. Quarles. When Corbin
left Quarles Oil Company, he continued working for Mr. Quarles, helping with landscaping at his home near Great Meadow. Alan Corbin has observed time as it unfolded around the former tenant homes on Corbin Lane. The road itself was named in 1988, when the county installed the 911 emergency system. “We figured we’d been here since 1927, so it just ought to be the name of the road,” says Corbin. Corbin Lane was once Old Route 17, and before that, Route 17. “Two brothers paved the
road with mules, a steel wheel grader and an old Caterpillar crawler,” he says, recalling watching the construction as a ten-year-old boy. “The mule yard was right next door. I remember the mule manager, who oversaw the prisoners who tended to the mules.” It took two years to pave from Warrenton to Tavern Road in The Plains. The current Route 17 was put in around 1988, when they straightened a dangerous curve in the road near Corbin Lane. “They had to move the curve a lot to make it less sharp,” he says, recalling the accidents he has witnessed from his front door. Corbin celebrated his 93rd birthday on July fourth, although for his first six decades, he celebrated on the 8th of July. “My momma knew when my birthday was. It wasn’t until I needed my birth certificate for Social Security that it was pointed out to me that the date read July 4. That Doctor changed the date, so it was on the fourth. I had to change everything, so it matched by birth certificate,” he says of the surprise of learning what his birth certificate read. Since that revelation, he has celebrated his birthday twice, on both days each year. Today, Alan Corbin and his wife of 72 years, Clay, live quiet lives on Corbin Lane, adjacent to the house where Corbin grew up. Their five children make frequent visits with their families. Corbin still tends to his garden, setting out early during the hot summer sun to do his weeding. But, unlike the days of his youth when he worked the corn fields, these days he can stop when he’s had enough and head back inside to enjoy the cool air conditioning. ❖

W
ith the outbreak of World War I, Judge John Barton Payne was appointed to the U. S. Treasury Board of Appeals by Pres. Woodrow Wilson, serving as general counsel for both the Shipping Board Emergency Fleet Corporation and the United States Railroad Administration. His principal role in this capacity was to arbitrate strikes during the critical months of the war, and the plan he drafted to take over the railroads during the war was implemented. Working in Washington, D.C., he had to give up his Chicago law practice and established a permanent home at 1601 Eye St. in Washington. In 1920, Pres. Wilson appointed him Secretary of the Interior, but he left in October 1921, when he accepted the chairmanship of the American Red Cross, a position he held until his death. It was during his tenure that the ARC faced many challenges – and provided immeasurable support to those in need in the U.S. and other countries. Natural catastrophes he faced included the 1927 Mississippi Valley floods and the Florida hurricanes of 1926 and 1928, the West Indies hurricane of 1928, and the disastrous drought in the U.S. in 1930-31. In addition, the ARC provided emergency unemployment relief during the Great Depression, prior to the organization of federal relief. In addition to his original appointment to head the ARC by Pres. Wilson, Judge Payne was subsequently reappointed by presidents Coolidge, Hoover and Roosevelt. Over the years, he was decorated one or more times for his humanitarian work by the governments of Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Chile, China, Costa Rica, Estonia, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Japan, Latvia, Norway, Poland, Siam, Sweden, Venezuela, and Yugoslavia.

JOHN BARTON PAYNE’S LIFE OF PUBLIC SERVICE
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
BY JOHN T. TOLER
Part 1, published July 2018, covered John Barton Payne’s early years, his rise in the legal profession, and his lifetime connection to Fauquier County.
}
A loyal Virginian Judge Payne had always retained a close connection with his native Virginia, and was one of the founders of the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. In 1919, his donation of over 40 paintings to the Commonwealth of Virginia in memory of his late wife Jennie and mother Elizabeth was valued at $500,000, and helped get the museum’s collection started. Among the paintings donated to the museum was The Rescue of St. Catherine by Saint George, painted by Peter Paul Rubens (1577-1640), considered to be the rarest and one of the greatest of Rubens’ work. Also given was a full-length painting of Pocahontas by Warrenton artist Richard Norris Brooke (1847-1920), and busts of Sir Isaac Newton and Benjamin Franklin executed by sculptor Hiram Powers (1805-1873). Later, in collaboration with Gov. John Garland Pollard, Judge Payne was able to secure federal funding under the Works Progress Administration to augment state funding for the new fine arts building in Richmond. In addition, he contributed $100,000 of his own money to the project. Closer to home, in May 1921, Judge Payne pledged the funds to build a permanent home for the private subscription Warrenton Library. Designed in the neoclassical style, it was considered one of the most distinctive library buildings in the Commonwealth. It would serve until 1982, when the present public library across Winchester Street was dedicated, and the old library renamed the John Barton Payne Community Hall.
LEFT: Appointed chairman of the American Red Cross in October 1920 by Pres. Woodrow Wilson, Judge Payne was featured on the cover of Time magazine in May 1923 for his work with the organization. BOTTOM: In 1921, Judge Payne pledged the funding to build the Warrenton Library on Courthouse Square. The building was completed in 1923, and served as a library until 1982.
Both while he was alive and later in the terms of his will, Judge Payne provided funds for the care and maintenance in the family cemeteries in the Orlean area where his ancestors and others are buried. Passing and remembrances Taken to George Washington Hospital in January 1935 after suffering appendicitis, Judge Payne contracted pneumonia, and died on Jan. 24. He was attended at his bedside by Fauquier resident and doctor Adm. Cary T. Grayson, who had been Pres. Wilson’s personal physician and would succeed him as chairman of the ARC. Upon learning of his passing, Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt issued the following statement: “Again, the nation mourns the loss of a great man. And those of us who were privileged to know John Barton Payne, as a co-worker and friend, know how unfortunate and untimely his passing. His was an unselfish service. To the lasting memory of this man it should and will be said that he never drew a boundary line within or without the United States, when flood, fire, earthquake or other great adversities called the ‘Greatest Mother (the ARC) to help the needy.” Judge Payne’s funeral was conducted at the historic St. John’s Church on Lafayette Square – which he had helped restore in
memory of his late wife – and burial was in Washington’s Oak Hill Cemetery. His legacy of giving continued after his death, as he left St. Leonard’s Farm to the American Red Cross, the College of William and Mary, and Washington & Lee University. In May 1936, Fauquier County citizens led by Herman E. Ullman established the John Barton Payne Memorial Challenge Trophy – a large, Sterling silver bowl and tray – to be presented to the winner of the Corinthian Class at the Warrenton Horse Show. The tradition continues today. In September 1940, St. Leonard’s was sold to R. D. Van Roijen. Over the years, the Van Roijen family has generously given parts of the farm for public use. Following in his footsteps as a jurist was a local Payne descendant, the late Hon. H. Dudley Payne Jr. (1945-2017). A respected Warrenton attorney, he practiced law here for several years, and served as a judge in the 20th Circuit Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court from 1995 to 2007. ❖ Special thanks to Mrs. H. Dudley Payne Jr. for sharing many documents collected by her late husband.

THE SS JOHN BARTON PAYNE One of the lesser-known tributes to John Barton Payne was the naming of an American Liberty ship in his honor, launched in 1943 and used to transport tanks and other heavy weapons overseas during World War II. After the war in Europe ended in May 1945, there was a humanitarian crisis throughout the continent and beyond, as cities were left as charred shells and towns flattened. Most farm animals had been lost, and starvation loomed. In response, the recently-organized United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration initiated a program supported by 44 countries that would send about 200,000 horses, mules, heifers and milk cows – and over 100,000 brooder chickens – to people in nations devastated by war. Animals that could be spared at home were gathered and ships found, including the nowidle SS John Barton Payne, to bring them where they were needed. About 7,000 volunteer “Seagoing Cowboys” signed up for six-week tours of duty to transport the animals to Germany, Poland, Yugoslavia, France, Belgium, Greece and Italy. There is no doubt that the operation saved thousands of innocent lives, including many children. It was the sort of effort that Judge John Barton Payne would have embraced, and through his namesake ship, the good work was done. ABOUT THE AUTHOR Broad Run resident John Toler is the co-author of the recent Fauquier County and Town of Warrenton history books, and has contributed numerous newspaper and magazine articles focused on the history of Fauquier, Prince William and Loudoun counties.

Birdhouses & Bluegrass The sight of Glenn Palmer is a familiar one in Warrenton STORY BY PAM KAMPHUIS | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE

arrenton residents will be very familiar with the sight of Glenn Palmer. On the weekends, he sits in the parking lot of Murphy’s Motor Sports on the Route 29 bypass selling his birdhouses. Every Saturday and Sunday, he loads up his inventory into the trailer of his lawn tractor and pulls across the street from his house into the parking lot where he sits all day with his handmade wares. “I’m out there every weekend if it’s not raining. Try to be anyway,” he said. It was a rainy, damp spring day when I went to interview Mr. Palmer at his home. At the door, I was told, “He’s in his work shed, he said to tell you to go on around back.”

{ AUGUST 2018 |
I followed the path around the house, passing a whole row of beautiful peonies in bloom. In a corner of the backyard I found Mr. Palmer under his canopy, just outside his woodshed. Bluegrass music played loudly from a radio. He greeted me, and turned off the music. “I have to have my bluegrass,” he said. “That’s the only kind of music I know. I have it on here 24 hours a day.” Since it was raining, we stayed under his canopy. He sat easily on a stool, and offered me a place to sit on the seat of his lawn tractor. I could smell the pine wood from the shed, and we were surrounded by his worktable and tall stacks of all kinds of birdhouses and bird feeders.

A man of few words, when I asked him to tell me about himself, he replied, “Well, I was a bricklayer for 39 years and had to retire because of my eyesight and my diabetes. I lost my leg 20 years ago. Started doing birdhouses as a hobby. That’s about it.” A native of Orange, Virginia, he lived in Manassas until about 5 years ago when he moved to Warrenton. A widower, his daughter had arranged for him to live in a nursing home: “My daughter put me in a nursing home and I was there for four months then I got out of there. wood and woodworking equipment, and his bluegrass music. And busy he is. He hates to sit still. “I can’t just sit in the house,” he says. He works on his birdhouses year round, weather permitting. Up by 3:30 every morning and at his workbench around 4 a.m., he produces a good number of birdhouses each day. “I cut ten out today, I put nine together this morning. They were all cut out, I just had to finish them up. But I build seven or eight, maybe ten or twelve at a time.” I asked him what he did when the weather was too bad to go outside. “Sit around and pout,” he admitted. “That’s about it. I build my birdhouses year round, as much as I can. I try to make a habit of it, to keep going.” When I asked him how he became interested in birdhouses, he answered, “When I couldn’t drive any more, and I had to quit bricklaying, I had to do something. I couldn’t just do nothing, I’d go crazy. The lady I was living with, we went walking one morning, and someone had thrown away some pieces of lumber. She said, ‘why don’t you pick those up and build a couple birdhouses?’ That’s what started it.” Not knowing anything in particular about birds when he started, he learned as he went along. “About 20 years ago when I started this, I learned a little bit about the bluebirds and the purple martins. I’d heard of them but didn’t know anything about them. This is not so much about birds, it’s more about the woodworking,” he said. He uses standard carpentry tools: a table saw, a mitre saw, hammer and nails, and screws. “But I use a hand drill to put the big purple martin houses together,” he said. “I get my wood at Groves Hardware in Remington. They’re real nice down there. I give a call down there, and they always bring

it up within a day or two. They know I don’t have any way to get down there and haul it up here. They cut it in four-foot lengths for me.” Each house is made for a particular bird species, he told me. “Different bird, different size hole, different size building. Robin, you have to have a three-sided house, one side completely open. A bluebird needs a small house with about an inchand-a-half hole to enter through. The house wren needs a one-inch hole, and the purple martins go in a two-inch hole. Sparrows, they’ll go in anything they can fit into.” In addition to the birdhouses, he also fashions bat houses, bird feeders, squirrel feeders, and bee traps. All his products are made from pine, and they are all waterproofed, except for the bee traps. The purple martin houses are painted with two coats of paint. But the others are just water sealed. “People like to see the natural grain of the wood,” he explained.

What’s his bestseller? “The bluebird houses,” he said. But the bee traps are selling really well also right now. “I started last summer making them, and they’ve been going real good, especially in the last month. The trap sits on the shelf, the bees go down in there and will not come back up. They used to be called boring bees, but I think everyone calls them carpenter bees now. I think just about everyone’s got them now, everyone with a wood house or porch.” Palmer has a good stock of all his products, and also takes special orders. “Somebody wants something, I pretty much have it. If I don’t have it, I can make it within a day or two. I have a lot of repeat business… customers will come back year after year.” “I’ve been doing this for 20 years. I hope to do it another 20, but I doubt it though.” Somehow, I think he’ll give it a pretty good shot. As I left, the bluegrass resumed, and he went back to his birdhouses. ❖
