Teaching from Experience BY AIMÉE O’GRADY
Over a decade in Japan, immersed in the Japanese culture and surrounded by their practice of Zen, had a profound influence on Marianne Clyde. Her practice, The Marianne Clyde Center, was voted Best Counseling Center in 2017. Therapists at the Center help clients reconnect with their one true self. Clients work to achieve this reconnection to leave sessions feeling

empowered and confident. At the Center, therapists view each client as already whole, perfect, and complete when they walk through the door. “I believe that everyone needs to reconnect with their creator. This recharging helps us to look past all the circumstances that are vying for our attention.” With the guidance from a therapist, clients work through the process of tuning down the noise and reconnecting. “It is a simple process, but not an easy one,” says Clyde. Professionals here acknowledge the many stressors present in today’s world. Clyde explains, “People are looking for good examples and strong leaders to follow. At the Center, we teach clients how to establish strength. We are all leaders, why not be good ones?” She continues, “No matter what you are doing, you are making an impact in some capacity. It should be a healthy one.” Nearly two years ago Clyde implemented an intern program that expanded the Center by ultimately launching new programs. Through her internship program, therapists are invited to work with her as they begin their own careers. “I want to

give new therapists the opportunity that was given to me when I was starting out. I want them to live their dreams, and hope to help them,” she says. It is with this holistic and inclusive approach that the Marianne Clyde Center has made its mark on Warrenton. Clyde feels it is a privilege to be working with the professionals who have come through her internship program and is grateful for the new energy and insight they have brought to the center. Anna Marie Evans, a therapist with the Center, developed a new program while interning that focuses on adolescents and diversion through a partnership with court services. Through such programs, the Center can expand its reach within the community. Clyde is touched by the community support in being recognized as the Best Counseling Center, “The community has been very receptive to the programs we offer and the support has been overwhelming.” On August 14, Clyde’s new book, Zentivity: How to Eliminate Chaos, Stress and Discontent in Your Workplace, will be available on Amazon.com.

The Heart of the Matter BY AIMÉE O’GRADY
Business owner and community leader Marie Washington has a simple suggestion for tomorrow’s leaders: “Find something that speaks to your heart and follow it.” Washington, whose law firm has won Best Law Firm in Warrenton for the past eight years, speaks from experience. In Washington’s case, her heart lies in her community. The Fauquier County native returned to the community she calls home after
14

completing her academic career. Today, she is a committed volunteer to community organizations such as Habitat for Humanity and the Salvation Army. This past April, she was awarded the Be A Shield award from the Salvation Army for her impact in the community. Washington also hopes to project the image that attorneys are normal people and that anyone needing the assistance of an attorney should not be intimidated. Washington can also be found participating in community events such as Warrenton Town Limits and First Fridays. “I love Warrenton and Fauquier County. I grew up here and these are my roots; I don’t see myself anywhere else. I love participating in events. I think it is important for people to know there are local attorneys and they don’t have to look elsewhere,” she says. With the number of law firms found in the area, Washington considers it to be an honor to be thought of so highly from members of the community and voted Best Law Firm for yet another year. “There are many very good firms in our region, I am flattered to be regarded so highly,” Washington says.
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
She is deeply committed to encouraging tomorrow’s leaders and conducts the junior judges program in the community’s elementary schools to better equip young children in discerning right from wrong. She is also involved with older students and conducts a summer legal seminar program in both private and public high schools to help spark an interest in legal careers. Washington volunteers during career fairs by permitting students to shadow her. She is an advocate for young women interested in careers in the legal profession and is a positive role model for them. Washington may log long hours at her firm, but when she is not working she can be found both near and far. The enthusiastic traveler enjoys representing her community worldwide and can be found posing with renowned landmarks with little pieces of home in hand, whether it is the local paper or even a Lifestyle Magazine. For quieter times at home, she enjoys fitness with her Great Pyrenees, Cody, and spending time with her parents who still live in Washington’s childhood home.

BEST services DRY CLEANERS
Warrenton Dry Cleaners 2nd Place: Acclaim Cleaners 3rd Place: ASAP Cleaners
Special Treatment Warrenton Center Cleaners (WCC) has been selected as the best dry cleaning service in town for the seventh consecutive year, and its continued success comes down to its staff’s attentiveness to both clothing and customers. “We know exactly what the customer wants,” said owner Umsuk Namgoong. “When we receive clothes, we clean them as though they belong to our own family. So we take very good care of our customers.” Functioning more as a one-stop center than a straight-up dry cleaning company, WCC offers a range of services that include laundering, alterations, garment preservation, leather shoe repair, and the cleaning of special items such as wedding dresses and fine rugs. And with same-day service available, WCC is also equipped for rush orders. “We can handle emergencies too—and at no extra charge,” Namgoong added. While WCC is prepared for any clothing contingency, their well-organized team is also recognized for being meticulous in all stages of service. “We make sure to triple-check each item before we put it on the conveyer so that there are never any problems,” Namgoong explained. “Our customers tell us that they’re really happy because they don’t have to worry about anything.” This includes missing buttons, shrunken wools, steam wrinkles, or other problems common to dry cleaning. An organic cleaning process is yet another feature which distinguishes the center and exemplifies its conscientious

style. With 29 years in the business, Namgoong is knowledgeable of and responsive to EPA regulations concerning dry cleaning, and he avoids the use of any chemicals that are harmful to garments and those who wear them. This is why he switched to a silicone-based solution, which is essentially liquefied sand, the same sand found on beaches. This liquid silicone is also the base ingredient for many everyday products such as shampoos, lotions, and makeup. WCC is the only dry cleaner in Warrenton that uses this method. Namgoong pointed out that this green approach is not only responsible, it is also practical: “There are no chemical smells, and the clothes have a longer life.” Though Namgoong has learned from practice and experience how to expand a business and excel in a competitive industry, he also intuitively understands the importance of caring for one’s employees and the reciprocal effect

of respecting every person who walks through the front door. “I’m really proud of my crews,” he said of his diligent and dedicated staff. “We have 10 people working together, and it’s like a family business. I have one employee who has been with me for over 25 years.” Namgoong is equally appreciative of his customers, 80 percent of whom are regular visitors to the center, an unusually high patronage for the dry cleaning trade. “I have customers that come from as far as Middleburg,” he gratefully remarked. Looking ahead, Namgoong simply strives to maintain the success of his business through sound practices and exceptional care. “I am going to continue to provide the best service I can for our customers,” he contended. And that kind of treatment is truly special. Warrenton Center Cleaners is located at 251 West Lee Highway. For more information about this business, please call 540-349-3141.

COURTESY OF CIAO BELLA
Capturing the Beauty in Every Occasion BY MARIA MASSARO
Recognized for providing the best photography services in Warrenton for the fifth consecutive year, Ciao Bella Celebrations has reasons of its own to celebrate. Owners Mona and Dan McLinden have created a one-stop venue for those special moments and milestones by opening a café at 18 Ashby Street in Old Town, which also serves as home for Ciao Bella Photography. The expansion offers “Celebrations Packages” that round out their awardwinning photography services. Included in these packages is the use of the café, celebration rooms for small weddings and parties, as well as a ride in Ciao’s custom trolley. “We’ve finally reached a point where we can truly be a full-service business,” Mona says of the company’s growth and ability to remain successful in such a highly saturated industry. “We’re constantly adding services and evolving that way. And having an active studio, where photography is at the core of everything we do, really helps.” Launched in 2003, Ciao Bella has provided first-rate photography services to dozens of local businesses, thousands of families, and

over 400 weddings. Whether it’s birthday parties, high school graduations, personal portraits, corporate headshots, or commercial properties, Mona and Dan’s photo shoots include more time, attention, and preparation than the standard mini-sessions of larger photography companies. Yet weddings remain Ciao’s specialty and the bulk of its business, especially the more intimate and impromptu ceremonies for couples who prefer a sweet and simple celebration. “We found that we really love small weddings, because we can spend a lot of time taking pictures in a way that’s very relaxed,” Mona explains. “We don’t just photograph the couple and the bridal party; we include family and extended family. We want to consider all the generations, as they all seem to have a slightly different idea of what they want as far as pictures. People tell us they really like the way we covered so many aspects of their wedding” This inclusive approach and personal touch distinguishes Ciao’s wedding services. For instance, couples go right to the studio, or prearranged spot, for a simple ceremony and a romantic photo session right after they

have obtained their marriage license from the neighboring courthouse. Mona and Dan can even help with extras such as flowers, dinner, cake cutting, overnight arrangements, and more. For couples seeking an even quicker and easier way to say “I do,” Ciao also offers an Express Wedding and Elopement package, in which the owners sort out all the paperwork and send the newlyweds a certified copy of their marriage license. “We’re working to bring something unique and special to our community,” continues Mona. “We’ve changed our services to be as flexible as possible, and we offer our customers many options between working in our studio and the environment of their choice.” This diversity and adaptability have helped Ciao remain competitive in a tough market. Ciao Bella has sustained its reputation as a preeminent company that has drawn repeat business and has served multiple generations of families through its reputation and functionality. And that’s worth celebrating—beautifully. For more information about Ciao Bella Celebrations, please call 540-349-0035 or visit www.CiaoBellaCelebrations.com.

Big Band Appeal BY KATIE FUSTER
You voted, and we got the message loud and clear—you love the nostalgic sound and family-friendly shows put on by the Silver Tones Swing Band. The Silver Tones have claimed the Best Local Entertainer/Band
BEST entertainment & recreation
spot just five years after their start in Dave Shuma and Wendy Martin-Shuma’s garage. The ensemble specializes in the big band sound of the late 1930s through the WWII era, with an Andrews Sisters-like trio of singers who belt out the tight harmonies of songs like “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” as well as later big band hits like “Mambo Italiano” and jazzy versions of popular songs “Jailhouse Rock” and “The Hustle.”
“Big band music is American music that will be around forever,” trumpeter Dave Shuma says. “People know and love these songs, and they bring total joy to our audience.” His wife Wendy Martin-Shuma, a classically-trained French horn player who is a vocalist in the band, agrees. “We try to gear our playlist to our event to give folks there a great time,” she says, “and we love to get the audience involved.”
BY MICHAEL ALEXZANDER
To that end, a crowd favorite is the group’s Carmen Miranda routine, complete with towering hats of fake fruit and a Conga line. “We had probably 120 people snaking around the Kettle Run cafeteria at our Big Band Sock Hop fundraiser,” Martin-Shuma says. And when the ensemble played the Delaplane Strawberry Festival, “the Conga line was snaking around the hay bales,” laughs Martin-Shuma. The Silver Tones is comprised of nineteen members, many of whom met in the Fauquier Community Band. They are “average Joes in our community,” Shuma says, with everyone from college students to engineers to retired county employees on board. “They’re like marathon runners—the more they rehearse, the better they get, and the longer they can play.” The Silver Tones’ personal record is 35 separate “charts” (the musical term for the arrangement of a given song) in one epic evening. “Our musicians are so dedicated, and we are so thankful for them,” says Martin-Shuma. In addition to local events like First Friday and the Strawberry Festival, the Silver Tones have played for the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum, the National Reconnaissance Office, Verdun Adventure Bound, and the Flying Circus Airshow. On August 26, they will be performing a Salute to the Troops Swing Dance at the Marshall Community Center. “Five retired service members are going to sing with the band,” Martin-Shuma says. “Three of them are soloists, and then a husband and wife team of Air Force members will be singing a duet.” In September, the Silver Tones, who have so far raised $7,000 for local high school band programs, will be playing another Sock Hop fundraiser at Liberty High School in Bealeton. Details about all Silver Tones Swing Band events, as well as booking information, can be found on their web site at silvertonesswingband.com.

Bottles, Saddles, and Purrs BY KATIE FUSTER
“The Galloping Grape combines my two greatest loves: horses and wines,” store owner Kimberly Pinello says. In fact, the shop is the only store in the country where you can purchase wine and beer along with your saddles and tack. “I love to do saddle fittings, because people bring their horses right here to the shop and I get to play with some horses and get a little dirty,” says Pinello. “And when it comes to wines, I love the challenge of matching a person’s taste to the perfect wine, and I’m good at it.” Pinello’s gift is just one of the reasons why the Galloping Grape has been voted Best Place to Buy Wine every year since 2009. Visitors enjoy the locally-owned shop’s well-curated selections, all of which Pinello has personally tasted and approved, as well as the warm welcome from Pinello’s two assistants: rescue cats Chloe and Molly. “As soon as the doorbell rings, Chloe runs to the front door to greet everyone, and when they leave, she walks them out,” Pinello laughs. The Galloping Grape’s best sellers are its Virginia wines. “They’re moving tremendously compared to eleven years ago when I first opened the shop,” Pinello says with a smile. “I’m happy to see the Virginia wines doing well and moving off the shelf. And we offer free wine tastings every Friday and Saturday. We always match or beat every price in town, including the grocery stores’ prices.” The Galloping Grape is open Monday through Friday, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., and Saturdays 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. It’s located at 143 East Shirley Avenue, across the street from the Warrenton Horse Show Grounds.

Fauquier Hospital Offers Bicycle Ergometer Stress Testing The newest addition to cardio-pulmonary unit
A
BY ROBIN EARL
stress test—putting stress on the body through exercise—is an invaluable tool used to assess a person’s cardiac function. Commonly, the patient walks on a treadmill that gradually picks up speed and increases its incline as technicians monitor the patient’s vital signs and symptoms. The patient exercises until reaching a target heart rate, and then continues until he or she reaches a maximum heart rate. A cardiologist may order the procedure when a patient complains of chest pain or pressure, shortness of breath, or has an abnormal calcium score (a non-invasive CT scan of the heart that measures the amount of calcified plaque in the coronary arteries). If a patient has a family history of heart troubles, a physician may require a stress test prior to a surgery. But what if a patient can’t use a treadmill? Balance or gait issues, joint pain or dizziness could preclude the use of this stress test staple. And some patients have trouble walking on an incline.
Enter the ergometer bicycle, Fauquier Health’s newest addition to its cardiopulmonary unit. The high-tech bike gradually increases the tension on the pedals—requiring more effort from the patient—at three-minute intervals. Heart rate and blood pressure are monitored, as well as the patient’s symptoms, if any. Respiratory therapist Angie Tolley explains that a patient’s physician will determine what kind of stress test would be best. “Someone with a walker or a prosthetic might be able to use the bike instead of the treadmill. If a patient cannot get their heart rate up to its maximum on the treadmill, we might switch them to the bike.” Cardiologist Dr. Neel Shah said, “For the large swath of our population that may be elderly, obese or have orthopedic issues, the bicycle stress test is particularly attractive.” An added bonus is that echocardiograms can be performed while the patient is on the bike actively exercising, allowing a real-time look at how the heart muscle
is functioning. An echocardiogram uses ultrasound to create moving images of the heart. When the exercise echocardiogram is compared to a resting echocardiogram, the cardiologist can determine how the heart is working. If there are sections of the heart that are not moving normally, this suggests the presence of significant blockages in the coronary arteries. This will prompt the cardiologist to consider further testing, such as cardiac catheterization. Dr. Shah is enthusiastic about the new technology and the enhanced data it can provide. “When we use the treadmill, the patient has to step off the treadmill and lie down before we can take the echocardiogram. The heart rate slows down during the transition so the measured data is not as accurate. On the bike, we can see more directly the heart muscle’s reaction to the exercise. The treadmill echo is about 68 percent sensitive; the bike is closer to 85 percent.”❖

Above, right: Dr. Neel Shah, cardiologist, keeps track of his “patient’s” heart rate, while Cardiopulmonary Supervisor, respiratory therapist Angie Tolley monitors his blood pressure and Kathy Grammo, cardio-vascular sonographer, takes a real-time echocardiogram. Home Automation Remote and voice control of lights, security, and access to your home BY ROBERT BRICE
I
n 1998, I unpacked my first ‘voiceactivated home automation’ kit (the HAL 2000). I loaded and programmed the software, connected the Ocelot controller to my massive Gateway desktop via a RS-232 connection, and plugged it into the wall so it could send X-10 commands to the plug-in lamp module which I had correctly addressed. Yes, it was all very technical. I trudged through and set up my microphone, and said in a loud clear voice “HAL, turn on the light.” Absolutely nothing happened. I may have said a “choice” word. Next I said, “HAL, turn on the family room light.” Like an invisible butler at my beck and call, the lamp, only five feet away, switched on. I stood at the cutting edge of technology; I could practically see the dawn of a new era unfolding before me. George Jetson and Rosie the Robot were right around the corner. Something similar happened in 2017 when I unpacked my second voice-activated home automation kit, the Amazon Echo. I plugged it in, turned it on, started the app, and in a few minutes said in a loud, clear voice “Alexa, turn on the light.” Nothing happened, except me stating something I cannot place in print. “Alexa, turn on the hallway light.” The hallway light sprang to life. Yes, the switch was only five feet away. But the myriad of possibilities unfolded in front of me.
“It’s just a fad,” you say? In 2016, the global home automation system market was valued at $39.93 billion*. That number is expected to grow to $79
40
{ AUGUST 2017 |
billion by 2022*. Amazon has sold more than 10 million devices equipped with Alexa, its voice-controlled automation and information software. Google won’t say how many home devices it has sold, but you can be assured it’s a lot. Home automation is now making some big waves and a lot of companies are jumping in. Much has changed since my first experiments with building a ‘smart home,’ but a lot is still the same.
The ‘smart home’ vs ‘home automation’ Many people use the terms “smart home” and “home automation” interchangeably, but really a smart home will use automation; it reacts to your input or to environmental conditions. Home automation will perform tasks automatically on your behalf.

Home features Take my house, for example. We’ll call this my “get home” scene. One mile before I get home I cross a geofence (a virtual perimeter around my house that allows the location of my cell phone to trigger an event). If it is after dark, my front porch light turns on and will stay on until I go to bed, or until midnight, whichever comes first. I, like most Americans, have a perfectly nice two-car garage filled to the brim with absolutely essential objects, so I have no room for my car. That’s okay, because I
have low-voltage path lighting to get me to the front door. I enter the code on my door lock (keys are so last year!) and the security panel recognizes that it’s me and disarms the system. The foyer lights turn on automatically for two minutes as I make my way to the kitchen, which is normally my first stop. The security system also notifies the thermostat I’m home and will adjust the temperature according to the season and time of day. In this scenario, I’ve automated lighting and security for convenience and safety. But that’s just the beginning.
Vacation features Let’s say I go on vacation. While I’m gone, I run my “vacation” scene. My lights will turn on for a few minutes randomly at night to make the house seem lived-in. My sprinkler system, already automated, can implement additional functionality to watch the weather. If there is an 90 percent or more chance of rain, the sprinkler will not turn on. These are convenient options, but what happens if an emergency arises? Your smart home could very well save the day. Again, I’m on vacation (I take a lot of vacations) and a water pipe breaks, flooding my basement (this actually happened to me before I installed my new security system). My smart home detects the presence of water and immediately shuts off the water main inside the house, and sends me a text or email regarding the problem. This feature could potentially save me thousands of dollars. While I was away, my housekeeper, the person who waters the plants, and a house painter all needed access to my home. Each individual entered their own code to enter my home, and I was notified via text. I was also notified the housekeeper left the window open and my air conditioner was on. Smart home to the rescue. My system is programmed to shut off the air if a door or window is left open for more than 10 minutes. All I had to do was send a quick text to my housekeeper reminding her to shut all doors and windows.
my basement, the system detects smoke and will initiate an alarm, notify the fire department, turn off the central air (to avoid spreading smoke throughout the house), and flash the outdoor lights to help first responders determine which house is mine. This feature could very well save my life. Now think of my ‘get home’ scenario. What if when I got home, someone nefarious was waiting for me? (I hate nefarious people.) I could program a separate duress code into my door lock that would alert the authorities that there is a problem. No sirens, no lights, nothing to cause a panic, just a simple notification that will send the police quietly to my home.
Creating the Smart Home Starting a smart home is easy, but can cause bewilderment unless you do your homework and plan. Be prepared to conduct research, and don’t be afraid to experiment. Keep in mind all the systems do roughly the same things, and the basic ones control at least lights, locks, thermostats, and include monitor sensors. Most new smart devices have their own app, and many don’t play well with others, although this is getting better. I advocate a system approach versus a component approach, meaning I purchase items I know will work together instead of buying individual gadget-based components. Garage doors even come with apps now that will notify you when someone opens and closes them. I use the Chamberlain
MyQ garage door controller, which is capable of integrating with other smart home software vendors such as Alarm.com, Amazon Alexa, and Google Home, and can be controlled by voice.
Digital assistants Hubs and devices make a “smart” home, but being able to talk to your system adds a whole new dimension. There are three main players in this field, but watch for more to come. Amazon Alexa devices. (Echo, Dot, Tap, and the new Echo Show) – Amazon doesn’t manufacture smart home devices, but they make the best selling digital personal assistant on the market. Alexa can be configured to work with hundreds of smart home devices and AV components – too many to list, and more coming online every day. Google Home. The Home device is powered by Google Assistant which is another digital personal helper. While it doesn’t yet work with as many devices as Alexa, it has a few tricks of its own that make it a serious contender in the smart home category. Google Assistant has better search capability and ability to distinguish between voices so multiple accounts may work from the same device. Apple Home Kit. It doesn’t matter if it is a Mac computer, an iPhone, an iPad, or iPod. Apple users are devoted to their products. The advent of Siri cemented that relationship so it makes sense for Apple
Emergency features When I head to bed, a single touch on my app or at a wall-mounted touch screen can lock doors, turn off lights, and adjust the thermostat. I’m asleep, but my smart home isn’t. If a fire breaks out in

Like Amazon and Google, Apple doesn’t really make smart home devices, but HomeKit allows it to talk to many of the same vendors Google and Amazon can, plus a few “Apple-only” brands. Samsung Smart Things Hub. Smart Things is a hub and software combination that wirelessly connects with a wide range of smart devices and makes them work together. Smart Things doesn’t have a voice interface, but can be configured to work with Amazon Echo and Google Home.
Other types of automation available A complete list of automation device and software would be extremely long, but here are a few new, cool, and unusual items that might be of interest. Samsung Family Hub refrigerators. This awesome new fridge brings hi-tech to your kitchen. It features a 21” connected touchscreen that allows you to create shopping lists, share photos, and stream media from your smartphone or tv. It also has three cameras to see inside your refrigerator, because sometimes there’s just nothing on tv so you can watch your yogurt. Philips Hue. Hue is a fantastic lighting system. It starts with the Hue controller and a single LED bulb with a choice of 16 million colors. Any mood, any task, and any time, there is a setting for you. The Hue has been out for awhile and there is a lot of competition in this category. Philips has the best bulbs and app, and more
automation systems are starting to integrate with them. Skybell HD WiFi Video doorbell. One of the many new Wifi-connected doorbells which enables you to see who’s at your door from anywhere with an internet connection. The motion-activated option allows you to see people BEFORE they ring your doorbell, or if they’re just dropping off a flyer or package. Kohler Numi. The most technologically advanced toilet on the market, the Kohler Numi features multiple user settings, a remote control, an app, motion activated cover and seat, advanced bidet functionality, integrated air dryer, heated seat, foot warmers, music via Bluetooth or aux input jack, and a deodorizer. Toasteroid. Currently in a Kickstarter funding campaign, this app-controlled toaster will allow you to print the weather, a message, or a simple drawing on your slice of morning toast. Why? Just because. SensoWave Stepla. Because this is Fauquier County, I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the the perfect app and device— for your cow. Stepla provides GPS and individual sensors to provide real time monitoring of a livestock herd. The app includes an animal’s location and activity levels, helping farmers to reduce costs and gain peace of mind.
My final advice Start small—automate a light, lock, or thermostat. Build your system over time. Don’t forget to always maintain strong Wifi passwords and encryption, and most of all, have fun. ❖

Financial Planning Essentials for a Young Family Your needs will change dramatically NICHOLAS R. SICINA CFP®

rowing a family is an exciting step in life that leads to a number of changes around the house. We get enveloped with tasks like furnishing the baby’s room or purchasing toys and clothes in preparation for when the little one arrives. Additionally, the newly-found joy and awesome responsibility associated with bringing a life into this world also requires a fresh look at the household finances. As my wife Kimberly and I prepare for our new addition, we created a checklist of important financial topics to discuss and act upon. Each family’s situation will be unique and require specific recommendations, so a general overview by nature couldn’t possibly address all the nuances from family to family. However, some commonalities persist across the board and should be addressed by most, if not all, couples. Let’s review three topics that should help provide some financial protection and security for your family now and into the future.

EMERGENCY FUND
Many of us have been told over the years, “it is wise to save for a rainy day.” It becomes even more important when you have one or more young dependent children. The typical recommendation is to have six months of nondiscretionary expenses saved if one spouse is earning most of the household income. Three months of nondiscretionary expenses saved could suffice if both spouses provide a reasonably comparable level of income. What’s nondiscretionary? It’s your mortgage, car payment, even food; in other words, things that you couldn’t do without. Let’s look at an example of why the emergency fund is so important and what its specific role might be in your financial picture. Let’s pretend you get into an automobile accident and are out of work for 2 months.

Don’t think that financial advisors are only for people who have a lot of money.
MEDICAL EXPENSES
On top of a savings account, extra back stops like a Flexible Spending Account, FSA, or a Health Savings Account, HSA, are great vehicles to fund for use towards medical expenses and health-related emergencies. Depending on whether or not you have an FSA or HSA you may need more in your emergency fund to cover your medical deductible and other related expenses. Moreover, even if you do have these medical savings resources they may not have enough money yet in them to cover all expenses. Your emergency fund can help soften the impact that medical-related bills could have on your family’s financial well being. DISRUPTION TO INCOME
For most of us, if we don’t work then we don’t get paid. Short-term and long-term disability coverage through your employer may help in the event an unforeseen incident impacts your ability to work. If you do not have short or long term disability coverage through work, you may want to beef up your emergency fund. If your employer does not offer disability as a benefit, you could look into getting shortor long-term disability insurance through the open marketplace. The need for coverage will vary depending on the type of work and level of income you stand to lose should you be indisposed for an extended period of time. Clearly, the more hazardous the work or the more financially impacted you would be from a loss of income, the greater the need for coverage. If you do not have coverage through your employer and/or are premium-sensitive, do yourself a favor and have sufficient funds saved up to protect your family from financial disruptions. This is just a surface level view of the potential impact that an unforeseen accident may have on your family’s finances. The bottom line is you should do what you can to save for the unexpected. LIFE INSURANCE
Life insurance is not exactly the most interesting or pleasant topic to discuss,
lot of coverage inexpensively if you’re in good health. Additional bells and whistles that other life insurance products can offer might be appropriate for some; however, don’t be lured by the sales pitch. They are often more complicated and expensive than is necessary to accomplish the objective at hand, in my opinion. COLLEGE SAVINGS PLAN
especially when you and your family are dreaming about all the wonderful joys the future holds. However, should something terrible unexpectedly occur, you will want to make sure your family has protection. There are several ways to go about calculating the level of coverage you may want to consider. A general rule of thumb pulled straight from the financial planning textbook is 12-16 times your gross pay. Please bear in mind this is very generic, and a more in-depth analysis of your personal situation is not only recommended—but required—to uncover your family’s true need. The amount of coverage necessary will be a function of whether or not one or both spouses are working and therefore the ability of the surviving spouse to continue to generate income. Common objectives include, but are not limited to, paying off the mortgage or other debts, providing some degree of supplemental income to the surviving spouse for at least of period of time, and helping to fund future needs like college or the surviving spouse’s retirement. The length or term of coverage should match the time frame when your family would be most vulnerable; i.e. when you are young, still accumulating wealth, and have debt to service. As time goes by, the need for life insurance may diminish. Having a conversation with a professional to help assess the proper level of coverage and length of term is advisable. In my opinion, most young families should keep it simple and stick with Term Life Insurance as you can get a
We all know the facts around rising education costs. If you graduated recently you may still be paying off your student loan. While it is reasonable to believe there could be push back to college costs in the foreseeable future, it may still remain a large looming expense. If you start funding a college savings plan early you may help reduce the burden by allowing your contributions to grow. Similarly to funding your retirement, the secret ingredient of time helps compound your earnings, allowing smaller dollar amounts to grow into meaningful savings. While many options are available to you to help pay for college, the flexibility that a 529 college savings plan can offer you makes it a great option. Furthermore, when friends and family are wondering what to get your little one for their first birthday or other holidays, you could ask them to contribute to “the college fund.” Work with a professional to better understand the ins and outs around college planning and to help you set up the most appropriate strategy for you and your family’s needs. You are never too young to start planning for the future. The stakes get higher once you begin to build a family. Don’t think that financial advisors are only for people who have a lot of money. Even if you aren’t ready to begin investing, you should discuss some basic personal financial principles with a qualified professional. Don’t wait until later on down the road to start thinking about these things. Set yourself up for success today by scheduling an appointment with a financial advisor. ❖
Please consider the investment objectives, risks, charges and expenses carefully before investing in a 529 savings plan. The official statement, which contains this and other information, can be obtained by calling your financial advisor. Read it carefully before you invest. DAY TRIP FEATURE
“Are We There Yet?” A short drive through the countryside to Morven Park in Leesburg proves to be an enjoyable day trip for the whole family
STORY AND PHOTOS BY AIMÉE O’GRADY
O
n a glorious, early summer day, my husband and I packed up our four young children, ages eight, five, three, and eight months, and headed for Morven Park in Leesburg. Our destination was the mansion on the property, in particular The Museum of Hounds and Hunting North America that occupies one wing of the house. Knowing Fauquier’s rich history in foxhunting, we thought it would be an interesting museum.
Morven Park is roughly one hour from Warrenton. Although our typical route to Leesburg would send us up Route 15, we decided to take an alternate route and headed north on Route 17 up Belvoir Road, which becomes Zulla Road and winds through the Virginia countryside. Morven Park was originally a 2,000acre estate that was bequeathed to the state by the last resident of the property, who was without heirs. In addition to the mansion, there
is a carriage museum, several old farmhand properties, and other rustic buildings. The site also includes many beautiful gardens. While the property maintains 1,000 acres, including hiking trails for anyone up for the challenge, the main attractions are in close proximity to the parking lot. From the parking lot, visitors of all ages can walk along a gravel road lined with towering magnolia trees and manicured boxwood gardens.

The Museum of Hounds and Hunting North America fills four rooms on one side of the mansion. These exhibits include apparel, photographs, and equipment used by fox hunters over the past two centuries. The collection includes a suitcase with compartments for every item needed for a foxhunt or foxhunt-related occasion, including space for a crown or top hat; a complete set of evening tails for formal hunt balls with fox mask studs; attire for women; and taxidermied fox heads. Fine china-filled glass cabinets are placed throughout the exhibit, and hunting drawings from 19th century illustrators hang beside portraits of notable huntsmen. Even without the brief attention span of young children, The Museum of Hounds and Hunting did not take very long to visit. To make the most of the hour’s drive, we decided to take a tour of the rest of the house as well. The mansion was home to the family of Westmoreland Davis, who, having been raised and educated in New York as a lawyer, decided to leave that environment and come to Virginia to live a simple farmer’s life. He served as

His wife Marguerite was also involved in the farming industry on the equine side. The couple had no children and spent a fair amount of their time traveling. The estate includes items from around the world that they brought back as souvenirs. The tour included nine rooms in the estate and took approximately 30 to 40 minutes to complete. Each room contained personal items belonging to the family and portraits along the walls. Near the kitchen, an old crank phone hung on the wall with an original list of numbers beside it; on the kitchen table were time cards from the farm workers who toiled in the fields and tended to the livestock. The kitchen has a wall separating the family from the help. At the end of the tour, the guide walked the group through a former ballroom with an exhibit of the estate’s fine china. Sure that this room would be our undoing, we held our breath and ushered the children through; they even

Thankfully, we navigated through that room without a single stumble and breathlessly left the ballroom with our young children, including that mischievous three-year-old. The tour guide thanked us for visiting and probably thanked us more for leaving and we left the estate to walk the grounds. A short walk from the main house took us to Turkey Hill Farm, where we found a former tenant farmer house. The fourroom house is open to visitors, and our children enjoyed running through it. Perhaps the main attraction,
as far as the five-year-old was concerned, is the turkeys pardoned by President Obama at the White House ceremony in 2015. Instead of becoming Thanksgiving supper, they are living out their days on Turkey Hill Farm. Overall, the destination was perfect to fill a few hours in the afternoon, or longer if guests choose to hike the property. The grounds are breathtaking and quite the backdrop for family photos. The mansion is lovely, the furniture is exquisite, and the guides are patient, welcoming, and tolerant of young children. ❖

EAT A COOL BREAKFAST BY JARED NIETERS
HYDRATE Hydration is crucial even when training in the cold, and its importance in the heat is dramatically greater. Hydrating doesn’t just mean pounding water before and during training. Adequate hydration requires fluid consumption long before you’re thirsty. In fact, it begins days before exercise and requires much more than just water. Make sure you’re taking in a variety of electrolytes–calcium, magnesium, and sodium are crucial for the days when you’re going to be sweating profusely.
GET UP EARLY To beat the heat during summer, exercise in the early morning hours when temperatures are lower.
CHOOSE COOLER ROUTES Temperatures aren’t the same across the Piedmont. Finding areas with plenty of shade is an obvious and easy way to avoid the highest temperatures. Many people don’t realize a variety of natural and manmade characteristics can create microclimates, which vary greatly even though they are geographically near each other. Creeks and rivers are natural air conditioners, where the cool, moving water can lower air temperatures nearby. Areas with lots of blacktop and large buildings comprised of glass and metal focus and retain heat, increasing the air temperature

Choosing certain foods for breakfast can help you stay cooler than others. The process by which this strategy works varies from food to food. If a meal is hard to digest, your body will create more heat. Other foods facilitate hydration and can help cool your core. Great foods for summer include avocados, cucumbers, bananas, poppy seeds, yogurt, and mint.
REDUCE YOUR WARM-UP It is crucial to prepare your muscles for exercising. However, in extreme temperatures, the risks of not being adequately warmed up for a fast start are outweighed by the potential for elevating core body temperatures too high– beginning the slide toward dehydration.
ICE Our knowledge continues to grow regarding the benefits of treating your body with ice. Icing is an effective treatment to reduce the swelling of injuries, but it also helps cycle blood through your major muscle systems when applied post-exercise, all while cooling you down. Some athletes have even taken to wearing ice vests during warm-up. By keeping their core temperature cool, they are still able to adequately warm the primary muscles that will be used.
ACCLIMATE Sometimes avoiding the heat isn’t the best choice. If your race or event will occur in the heat of the day, you should experiment with training at that same time so the conditions don’t catch your body off guard. Gradually experiment with putting forth effort at these times, and slowly add time and intensity to workouts. This way you can stay tuned-in to your body’s reaction to the heat. ❖

Experience Old Town Warrenton By enjoying the Birthday Bash Program BY AIMÉE O’GRADY
M
arta and Mary did not know one another when they walked into the Old Jail Museum one sunny, summer Friday, but they soon discovered they had something in common. Although born in different years, the two women shared a birthday, June 24, and they decided to celebrate together in Old Town Warrenton. The duo walked through town visiting shops, filling their red bags, and being wished a happy birthday by merchants throughout town. This was exactly what was intended when the merchants adopted the Birthday Bash Program for Old Town Warrenton. In January 2016, Lee Owsley, owner of Latitudes Fair Trade, was on vacation when she began speaking with a merchant from the small town of Spring Green, Wisconsin. “She mentioned this program that the merchants of Spring Green participated in,” recalls Owsley, who made a mental note to bring it to the next merchant meeting after she returned home. The merchants quickly embraced the idea and organized the program to get it under way. Once the program was developed, Owsley contacted the town council, which provided some reassurance that the town would support the program. The merchant feedback was equally as supportive. The town was so supportive
62
{ AUGUST 2017 |
that they provided funding for a graphic designer to create a logo and for the merchants to purchase the startup items that included red bags, window decals, and stickers for birthday guests. “The idea is simple,” explains Owsley. “Anyone visiting Old Town Warrenton on their birthday receives a red bag, a sticker, and a map with 27 participating merchants. When they go into any participating merchant [identified by a window cling] they receive a small gift.” Gifts include sweets of their choosing, a gourmet chocolate bar, a small frame, flowers, jewelry polishing cloth, and even a small celebratory ceramic ornament. “Merchants are encouraged to give items to birthday guests, rather than gift certificates,” says Owsley. “We want their bag to feel full as they walk through town.” As an added touch, merchants sign the bag and have their photo taken with the celebrants for social media. “We want visitors and residents to know how special they are and when their birthday rolls around each year we want them to think ‘I’m going to celebrate in Old Town Warrenton,’” says Owsley. Warrenton resident Angee Adams saw the Birthday Bash program on Facebook on her birthday this summer and decided to celebrate in Old Town. “It’s a great program, I love it,” she said. “The merchants are all very friendly and outgoing. We have amazing stores and this program will introduce them

}
to more people who may not know about some of our hidden gems,” she continued. Adams and her family relocated to Warrenton over 16 years ago from the Virginia Beach area. “We came here because we wanted the small-town charm. Unfortunately, we see Warrenton expanding and developing a lot lately. Programs like this and other events like First Friday and Gum Drop Square will help to retain the charm and intimacy of a small town,” she adds. In the case of Marta and Mary, they gained much more than a full gift bag of well wishes from Old Town Warrenton merchants; they gained a new friendship. ❖ To be eligible to participate in the Birthday Bash Old Town Warrenton program, you must be at least 18 years old and present an ID indicating your birthdate to a participating merchant when you visit Old Town Warrenton. For visitors whose birthday falls on Christmas or New Year’s Day, you are welcome to visit Old Town Warrenton one day before or after your birthday to collect birthday gifts from merchants. For questions or to be added to the list of participating merchants, contact Lee Owsley at latitudesfairtrade@gmail.com.

What’s For Lunch? Tips to consider when buying or packing your child’s meal BY DEBBIE EISELE
F
resh, healthy food is necessary for children to thrive, grow, and have the brainpower necessary to perform well in school and in activities such as sports. Whether students pack or buy, there are multiple things to consider to ensure they are obtaining the nutrients they need. According to Beth Potter, MS, RD (a registered dietician/nutritionist at Fauquier Health), “Although children need the same nutrients that adults need, they are not little adults, so they don’t need the same quantities of food that an adult would be served. Because calorie needs depend on a person’s size and activity level, among other things, two children that are the same age may need very different portion sizes to meet their individual nutritional needs.”

The Plate Method

Potter suggested utilizing the “plate method” for packing lunch. Portions on the plate are divided into onequarter protein, one-quarter starch (whole grains), and one-half fruits and vegetables. “Each meal should contain three to four food groups,” she said. The food groups include proteins, whole grains, fruits and vegetables, and dairy. Although the plate method doesn’t have a designated section for dairy, it is a valuable nutrient for growing children. In addition to the food groups suggested in the plate method, dairy should be

included in a healthy well-rounded lunch, too.”
Proteins “The protein section of the plate should include a lean source protein such as turkey, ham, chicken breast or water-packed tuna,” said Potter. Other good sources for protein are cottage cheese and yogurt (ones low in sugar). Plain yogurt with added fresh fruit is a tasty option and Potter suggested “adding sunflower kernels for an added ‘yum’ factor.”

Whole grains are an important component to a balanced meal. “I see many lunches missing this component,” Potter stated. She also explained because there are many processed and refined grains in cereals, crackers, and bread, individuals of all ages are not consuming enough whole grains they require. “Like refined pasta, many rices have been refined (the fiber- and nutrient-rich outer shell has been removed). That’s why they cook faster. Brown rice and wild rice are better sources of fiber and nutrients than white rice. Just read the ingredient listing and make sure it says ‘whole grain brown rice,’ or ‘whole grain wild rice,’” Potter suggested. When incorporating whole grains into lunches, Potter’s advice for parents is to read the label. The first ingredient should state “whole grain.” If it doesn’t, locate other food options that do have this as the first ingredient. If parents seek bread substitutes, Potter mentioned that whole grain tortillas are a good choice to create a sandwich wrap; offering children a different taste and texture. Inclusion of a side dish, like popcorn, is another method of supplying children with more whole grain foods. “Popcorn is a whole grain and is a healthier option than many chips. It should be made in either an air popper or in a pot without a lot of butter or salt,” advised Potter.
Fruits & Vegetables Fresh fruit is the best option. Potter explained, “Chewy fruit snacks and fruit juice boxes do not count as a serving of fruit. Purchasing fresh, seasonal fruit or canned fruit packed in its own juice is a healthier way to go.” Vegetables are a challenge at times. Some children refuse to eat just about any vegetables. But, Potter shared a simple trick to increase children’s intake of vegetables. Mix raw vegetables in the same container as fresh, cut fruit. “The juice from the fruit will sweeten the vegetable, making it more enticing for kids to eat,” Potter said.

Many children have special dietary needs. In many cases, parents will opt to pack their child’s lunch. But if the individual does need to purchase a school lunch, “communication is key.” Potter also advised, “Parents and school staff need to discuss the details, so that everyone is clear on the specific dietary requirements of the student.” She also recommended parents provide a doctor’s letter to the school that states, for medical reasons, the child cannot have certain foods. This letter needs to include pertinent information such as which foods are acceptable substitutes. There are forms available online to help plan for dietary restrictions at school. There are many resources available online that discuss other important aspects of meal planning and preparation. Potter suggested utilizing the Dietary Guidelines for Americans, revised 2015 edition, which discusses portion sizes for both children and adults. Plus, parents can schedule time with a dietitian to address specific concerns or to create an individualized diet for their child. This is very helpful for those with allergies or for those who suffer from celiac or other diseases that may affect nutrition and dietary needs. For parents wanting to pack healthy lunches for their children, Potter had some advice. She said, “Get kids involved in making the lunch. They are more apt to eat what they make.” To schedule an appointment with Beth Potter, MS, RDN, contact Fauquier Health & Wellness Center, 419 Holiday Court, Suite 200, Warrenton by calling 540-3162644 or email her at beth.potter@ fauquierhealth.org. ❖

Finishing the Vision A LOCAL IN V EN TO R B R I N G S SI M PL E FUN BACK TO TH E G AM E I N D USTRY

T
hough a commercial real estate broker by trade, Fauquier County resident Curtis Paul honors his artistic side every day. Whether his outlet is writing, playing the drums, or thinking of inventive ways to educate and inspire youth, Paul is compelled to share his many talents and motivate others in fun and imaginative ways. “I’ve always been involved in so many different things: photography, videography, music, building models,” he reveals. “I find enjoyment in anything to do with the creative process.”
This penchant for imagination and ingenuity has ignited Paul’s latest creation, Scratch Golf, a game of skill in which players strategically shoot (or “scratch”) a pen or pencil toward the hole on a variety of illustrated golf courses which are perfectly proportionate to real golf courses. Though simple in its concept, this game requires focus and a certain technique to navigate each of the 18 holes, which include various obstacles such as water, trees, rocks, sand traps, and even alligators. “You don’t have to be a golfer to play,” assures Paul, who added detailed instructions and helpful tips to the Scratch Golf handbook, as well as a practice driving range and putting green.
Inspired by a visit to a college bookstore, Paul realized he could invent something more engaging than the standard retail board game, something that was both enjoyable and challenging for young and old alike. “I was looking for that elusive product that could be played by anyone, anytime, anywhere, alone, or with other people,” he emphasizes. In January, Paul started developing Scratch Golf and sketching all the graphics, which were converted into a striking prototype of the game by Allen Wayne Design Studio in Vint Hill. “This is a retro, gettingback-to basics game,” continues Paul, who effectively materialized his passion for tactile activities that prompt participants to think, interact, and hone their motor skills. And product testing has confirmed that many people share Paul’s affinity for simple and manual fun: “I have been getting amazing feedback—from children, teens, and adults. When I show people [this game], their reaction is ‘Wow! I’ve never seen anything like this. This is so much fun to play. Where can I get this?’” As a contributing writer to Toy Shop Magazine and the founder of Curtlin Toys and Games, Paul has learned through research and experience how to develop products that have mass appeal. In 2009, he designed his first game, Xtreme Takeover: Battle of the Xiacons. The ensuing

learning curve would help him produce KATATU, his most celebrated game yet. A clever and animated combination of Tic-TacToe and Nine Men’s Morris, this game won seven awards, including two education awards and the Creative Toy Awards Game of the Year in 2012. Now in the final phase of development, Scratch Golf will be launched on Kickstarter and other crowd-funding platforms in August. It will then be sold online and in stores for about 12 dollars. Already thinking ahead, Paul plans to extend his concept to activity books for children and other sports such as Scratch Baseball. “This is just the first of what we hope will be many concept-type games, but the golf platform works really well for this idea, and that’s why we launched

it first,” he explains. Mindful of golf’s universal appeal, Paul also envisions a Scratch Golf edition that features world-renowned courses, allowing everyone the opportunity to vicariously play famous fairways such as Augusta or Pebble Beach. Though occupied with this new venture, Paul still manages to balance his life with other interests and aspirations. Since 2015, he has been a percussion teacher at the Allegro Community School of the Arts in Warrenton, and is currently organizing a “Rock Camp” for young, aspiring musicians to demonstrate their playing skills and connect with fellow instrumentalists. A natural mentor, motivator, and philosopher, Paul has found multiple ways to channel his creativity and has subsequently inspired others to heed their passion and share their unique talent: “I think the creative process is so vital to our experience here [on Earth] and to the human
condition. A lot of people become stagnant and just don’t follow their vision. I believe life should be enjoyed and not endured, and so we should embrace the creative process—whether it’s music, dance, or inventing a game. My calling was to put out really cool products that make life more enjoyable. I literally create something in my mind, seeing it all the way to the final product. I see it on the shelf, and I see people buying it. And if you believe in that [end result], that’s what will happen. So don’t just create halfway; finish the vision.” Should that vision involve the game industry, you can contact Curtis Paul at via his website at curtlintoysandgames.com for information on joining his growing company and bringing new concepts to market. And to learn more about Scratch Golf, “the game of inches,” please visit the website at scratchgolfgame.com. ❖

hy are we drawn to one product over another? Why do we trust one business over another? And why are some brands instantly recognizable and endlessly memorable? The answer is simply graphic design. Most of us don’t spend our day thinking about this particular topic, but in one way or another, we are continually surrounded by it: the logo on the dashboard of your car, the signs on the side of the highway, the cereal you poured for breakfast, the poster for the latest blockbuster, and even the magazine you’re reading right now. Every day, in every aspect of our lives, companies are sending consumers visual messages via their graphic artists’ designs.

The importance of professionally created imagery is crucial for creating your identity in the marketplace. It goes far beyond clipart and stock photography: design studios have the ability to turn images and text into compelling visuals and marketing collateral that sell. A business—or product—identity is the launch pad for all future marketing. Visual representation of the services or products you offer, your mission, and your overall philosophy may be incorporated into an image that resonates with both existing and prospective clients. This form of communication will easily illustrate a complicated idea and earn our trust. Design can spur emotions, encompass principles, and represent quality. Why should a business invest in their identity?
The role of graphic design in your branding is significant, and this expense should be included in your marketing budget. Credibility. Businesses that invest in quality graphic design are viewed as more professional and more trustworthy. A perception of competence can make or break a business. Consumers are looking for evidence of quality to earn their trust. A quality logo and a clear brand is the best way to display your professionalism.

As consumers, social media, websites, and TV commercials surround us. We are inundated with choices. Standing out in the deluge of daily marketing that consumers are subjected to is vital. design stands out in the minds of consumers and remains in their subconscious, and can deliberately influence their choices. By investing in this component of your marketing strategies, you may significantly increase your ability to become recognizable in the minds of your potential clients and to be portrayed as an honest and qualified business. Positive impression. It’s simple: looking good makes a favorable first impression. Influential design also allows you to repeat your message and branding allows customers to remember your organization’s top attributes. Consumers tend to form opinions in moments (literally seconds); a poor first impression can be difficult, or impossible, to change. Think about the power of the “five-star” system we live in today—who hasn’t formed an opinion based on a three-star review? Creating the proper identity may give you a “five-

star” review in the minds of decision makers regarding your service, company, or product. Consistency resonates. What idea would you like to present to the market? What tone are you trying to set? Professional graphic design summarizes an idea. It sets the tone in a way that’s pleasing to the eye. Customers don’t always read a document designed to convince us to trust a brand, or buy a product, but they will glance over an image that may resonate with them. A brand must be consistent; all representations of your company or product should be similar in order to establish brand recognition and trust. Utilizing a professionally developed brand identity enables you to create this vital consistency. Identity. Brand identity is a significant methodology which heightens how you communicate with your target market. By using branding techniques, your organization will effectively

convey your intended message in a visually pleasing manner. Remember, careful attention to detail is required in order to connect the client’s message and to implement your overall marketing strategy. A visual brand includes logos, advertisements, sales materials, websites, social media campaigns, brochures, and much more. Minor details may go unnoticed by the average consumer, but seasoned designers know the most minute detail can make all the difference in the overall success of your marketing strategies. If your business is new, consider the importance of all aspects of marketing and determine how important it is to your overall success. If you are an existing business seeking to rebrand your company, remember to incorporate the importance of a branded identity into your marketing and business plans. ❖

Jewels in the Old Dominion Prettiest backcountry campsite in the Blue Ridge Mountains BY ANDREAS A. KELLER

an hyperbole sell you on a hike? It did for me. While searching for Boots ’n Beer’s next backpacking trip, I stumbled across this enthusiastic description on hikingupward.com: “Can’t make it to Scotland or Switzerland anytime soon to hike those spectacular high mountain meadows? Well, right here in the Old Dominion we have the next-best thing.” Every hiker in the Mid-Atlantic should hike Cold Mountain at least once. The 360 degree meadow views from the saddle of the mountain are some of the best on the East Coast. And then the zinger that made my heart leap: “At the end of the clearing is one of the prettiest backcountry campsites in the Blue Ridge.” With this information I was sold, and organized an overnight trek to experience a hike full of hyperbole.
Day One - The Brewery Cold Mountain is about a three-hour drive from here, but Virginia’s scenic countryside down Route 29 south of Charlottesville, as well as the traveling camaraderie, more than compensated for the time it took. Stopping in Roseland, we enjoyed lunch at the
Basecamp Brewpub & Meadows which offered some good oak woodfired smoked dishes and some of the great German craft beers of Devils Backbone Brewing Company. Eating outside in the sunshine and taking in the lush, dark green Blue Ridge Mountains would make most anyone want to call a real estate agent to find a weekend or retirement home there.
Cold Mountain Traveling on, we found the last three miles to the trailhead (coordinates 37,758910, -79.188760) to be a very bumpy gravel road that is best negotiated with a four-wheeldrive vehicle. We unloaded our gear and we began our trek, passing the Appalachian Trail and reaching Hog Camp Gap. We continued on the trail about one-third of a mile, arriving at the side-by-side trailheads for Cold Mountain and Mount Pleasant. After shouldering our backpacks and following the blue-blazed Hotel Trail for less than an hour, we reached a clearing whose beauty caused all three of us to blurt out, "Look, here it is! It is 'the prettiest back country campsite in the Blue Ridge.'" It wasn't hyperbole. The clearing was large and covered in beautifully soft grass, and
offered many inviting spots to put our tents under the shade of tall, majestic oaks. We were so excited that when we sat around the campfire we promised ourselves to come back to this unique place with children or grandchildren to share a night under the stars. In the morning we descended along the wooded mountainside into Cow Camp Gap. At Little Cove Creek

we gathered with others, like one does at the office water cooler, except here we drank cool water we filtered ourselves from the clear mountain creek. It's always interesting to chat with others on the trail, and this time we met Appalachian Trail through-hikers who had stayed overnight in the nearby lean-to shelter, as well as an AT hiker from Germany who was given the trail name "Blitz" for the impressive speed at which he moved in order to cover 30 miles every day. With our water bottles filled, we turned onto the Appalachian Trail which took us to the 4,033 feet summit of Cold Mountain. What a refreshing, breathtaking reward that was to see—an expansive field of deep pink wildflowers amid the green of the grass and trees with a backdrop of a true blue sky that stretched for miles.
Mount Pleasant After resting for a while, we hiked back to the trailhead. Around midday we enjoyed a beer out of the cooler with a sandwich before stepping onto the Henry Lanum Memorial Trail. Following the blue-blazed trail for about two hours, mostly uphill, we reached Mount Pleasant Summit Trail and used the nearby seasonal spring to fill our empty water bottles. The trail kept winding its way up the mountain to the saddle between the east and west summits. Having stopped along the way on various outcroppings with views to the east for pictures and to catch our breath, we turned to the westerly summit which required us to scramble seven

feet up through rocks in order to reach the top of Mount Pleasant at 4,021 feet. Wow—the second jewel we were looking for loomed before us, leaving us absolutely speechless. At the summit, the eternal beauty of wave after wave of mountain ranges unfolded as far as our eyes could see. We were simply awestruck by this rare view reserved for the few who reach for this summit high above the Blue Ridge foothills. We sat quietly in total admiration watching nature’s stunning presentation of mountain ridges gradually dissolving on the horizon in the slowly fading daylight.
The night on the ridge with our tents just below the mountaintop offered up forceful winds blowing above us in ocean-like waves, alternating between orchestral strength and the lulling tenderness of a cradle song. We never felt more connected to Earth. In the morning, refreshed and happy, we returned to the trailhead to wrap up our trip. Among the early morning wildlife we encountered was an owl, and a doe and her “bambi” playfully hightailing along the trail, which were a sight to see. We even saw a beautiful eastern garter snake claiming her right of way on the trail. For those who are thinking
of making these spectacular hikes, the Cold Mountain hike is a 5.5-mile circuit hike with about 1,500 feet elevation gain. It is a very comfortable day hike which can be done in 3 to 4 hours with lunch on the bold of Cold Mountain where you can enjoy a 360 degree view of the mountain ridges. The Mount Pleasant trail, also at a length of 5.5 miles and an elevation gain of 1,400 feet, is a moderate day hike suitable for families. Both Mount Pleasant and Cold Mountain are located in the Mount Pleasant National Scenic Area which was so designated by Congress in 1994, and all trails are kept in great shape. By combining these hikes you can enjoy an 11-mile hike or turn it into a most memorable backpacking trip of two or three days. After hiking this awesome figure-eight circuit hike, we agreed it would be the perfect introduction for first-time backpackers to the wilderness. Boots ’n Beer will offer this grand tour again in fall for the radiant foliage and ideal hiking temperatures, and invite all to join us as we revisit these two jewels in the Old Dominion.
The Natural Bridge On the way home, less than thirty miles from the Cold Mountain/Mount Pleasant trailhead, in the southern end of the Shenandoah Valley and flanked by the Blue Ridge Mountains, is the Natural Bridge. This is enormous and breathtaking rock bridge and National Historic Landmark is a spectacular sight, and it is not to be missed.❖

From IPAs to Ales Tin Cannon Brewing in Gainesville is a collaboration between home brewers Aaron Ludwig and John Hilkert. The pair, who met through their kids and wives, quickly established a partnership Tin Cannon Brewing offers at Ludwig’s house after Hilkert’s wife kicked him out of her kitchen. aficionados a plethora of options Initially intending to start a small business selling home brewing supplies, By Steve Oviatt their plans changed when the General Assembly approved a law enabling microbreweries. When Ludwig received a book detailing how to set up a microbrewery and shared it with Hilkert, Tin Cannon was off and running with the support of their families and friends. Based in a Gainesville industrial park, Tin Cannon features a cozy tasting room. Plans are underway to add a new brewery and canning line this coming winter. Meanwhile, the cozy atmosphere and “Cheers” style ambiance has gained a loyal customer base in addition to people visiting for the first time. The brewery features 10-13 beers at any given time, rotating various beers onto and off the menu every two weeks. Some beers, however, have proven to be popular enough to keep on, like the light, refreshing Virginia Blonde American Ale and the Twin Cannons Double IPA with its sweeter, malty overtones of Apricot and Peach (and 9% alcohol content). Heart of Lion Amber Ale, with its caramel overtones, was brewed to honor the Prince William Police officers who were killed and wounded earlier this year. Ludwig says his mother always wants him to bring some of the Cavalier Joe TIN CANNON BREWING Bourbon Porter, noted for its vanilla and bourbon overtones, when he and his 7679 Limestone Drive, #130 family pay her a visit. Gainesville, VA 20155 571-248-0489 And no visit is complete for IPA lovers without tasting the Busted Pipe Black HOURS: 4-9 PM Thursdays & Fridays IPA, which was named for an accident. 1-9 PM Saturdays Families are welcome. Food trucks and 1-8 PM Sundays a nearby pizzeria provide food and local www.tincannonbrewing.com bands have stopped by to play.
Steve Oviatt is Past President of the Haymarket Gainesville Business Association who runs his own consulting business in addition to working with a number of local and international wineries. Steve acknowledges his daughter taught him everything he knows about wine. He lives in Catharpin with his wife, Nancy.
