July is always my busiest month of the year. Our August issue is our biggest and most eagerly awaited issue of the year and getting it to press is … a lot of work. But it is rewarding because the volume of work brings out the best in us all and makes teamwork, which has been more difficult since COVID, come to the front again. Thank you to our advertisers, who, after all, make the magazine world go ‘round, our designers who make the ads and editorial look amazing, and the sales staff who are the bridge between the two. And, of course, the many other staff members who are indispensable in the process.
But July has also been a sad month, with the loss of four community members whose varied contributions helped make Fauquier County the special and unique place it is. We remember with fondness Sal Torelli, James Reston, Jr., William Woodward, and Pablo Teodoro and send our condolences and thoughts to their friends and families.

THE BEST OF FAUQUIER
79,970 votes have been counted, and the winners are announced!
PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER
Every year, our August issue, with our Best of Fauquier results, is our biggest and most eagerly awaited issue. This year we had a fantastic turnout: 9,344 voters cast 79,970 votes. That’s a lot of people who cared for their favorite businesses and took the time to go and vote, and we thank them for their participation.
Some businesses win their categories year after year, and we support these longtime businesses who have gained such popularity through years of excellent service to the community. Sometimes, though, there is a new winner, either a new business in town, or a longtime business that wins for the first time, and we love those surprises too.
But Best of Fauquier only scratches the surface of the wealth of businesses in our community. Often, the votes are so close, and we wish we could recognize everyone who makes this such a business friendly community because there are so many special places here.
Many many thanks to all the businesses in the county, and thank you, Fauquier County, for supporting them!

Bobby G and the Heavies
540-987-8841
W: BobbyGandtheHeavies.com
Find us on Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok
Please tell us about your business. What products or services does it provide?
Bobby G & the Heavies is the area’s best rhythm and authentic blues band. Performing the top favorites in classic rock, pop, country, and soul as well as blues, the band has emerged as a versatile and unrivaled powerhouse in Northern Virginia’s music scene.
Were you surprised by your “Best Of” win?
Why or why not? Have you won in past years?
We have not won this honor in the past. We have been very active playing in the area in the last couple of years, and along the way we have met a lot of fantastic friends and fans that have really shown up for us and voted us into the “Best Of” Fauquier and we could not be more pleased with the results. Thank you so much.
What do you think is the reason our readers love your business enough to vote it “Best Of”?
We have been playing in Fauquier and surrounding areas for 14 years. We always try to bring an energetic live music performance that crosses many genres to every venue. We engage with the crowd and like to have people interact with us. We try our best so the audience will have a good time. Our followers and fans are really the best there is. They have made this happen for us.
Why do you enjoy doing business in Fauquier County, and how long has your business been located here?
This county is beautiful in all four seasons. There are some amazing places to perform and some of the best people you will ever meet. Our group was formed in 2009 but most of the members have been performing in the Fauquier area since before that.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know about?
Some of the things that we are most proud to share when we introduce the band is that four of our members are veterans that have served our country in the armed forces. The other is that three of our members are educators, teaching in the school systems of the surrounding areas.
Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?
We have had the opportunity to perform for Feed Fauquier at Gloria’s in Warrenton. We have also had a variation of the group play at Laurel Ridge Community College for many events, a couple times at Relay for Life. It’s an honor to give back to the community when we have the chance.

BEST BARIATRIC SERVICES
Bariatric and Metabolic Weight Loss Center
A subsidiary of Piedmont Family Practice
493 Blackwell Rd., Suite 305, Warrenton 540-341-1728
W: piedmontdocs.com/bariatric-weight-loss-center
Please tell us about your business. What products or services does it provide?
We are an integrated non-surgical weight loss center, meaning that we offer every service required for our patients to succeed in their weight loss journey and goals under one roof. This includes medical weight management, lab, counseling, dietary education, and several ancillary services.
Were you surprised by your “Best Of” win? Why or why not? Have you won in past years?
Since this is a new category, we weren’t really sure what to expect in regards to prior years. We had an idea of some of the other contenders, based on our analysis of the market prior to launching the Bariatric Center, but I think that winning the “Best of” this year goes beyond the category. It shows the pride and commitment our staff and providers have toward this mission which reflects in the patient experience and then the willingness the patient has to take time to go on the website and actually vote for us. It definitely is a win for our staff and reflection that their hard work has paid off.
What do you think is the reason our readers love your business enough to vote it “Best Of”?
We have always advocated for an amazing patient experience. In order for this to happen, the staff has to be committed and believe that what they are doing is of value. We think that the “Patient First” mentality begins with “Staff First”, so we have surrounded ourselves with people who believe and hold these principles to be true and we treat each other the way we expect our patients to be treated. This has a trickle effect that permeates everything we do and that positive patient perception.
Why do you enjoy doing business in Fauquier County, and how long has your business been located here?
This community has embraced and accepted each and every one of us, so we are taking care of our friends, family, neighbors, etc. This makes us feel even more committed to excellence and increases our passion for what we are providing. We are a subsidiary of Piedmont Family Practice so as a practice we have been here for a long time, but the Bariatric Center itself opened in December of 2021.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know about your business?
We want everyone to feel comfortable in approaching us for their weight loss needs and to know that, as a classified medical condition, they will have access to the latest evidence based medical approaches to weight loss provided by board certified providers who strive for excellence and work with them, their providers and their insurance to ensure the best outcomes possible.
Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?
Our providers are involved in various activities, such as providing care for patients at the Free Clinic, advocating for education in childhood obesity, and with bilingual providers and staff, providing care and education for our Hispanic population.

BEST PHYSICIAN Anita Maybach, M.D.
Dr. Maybach’s General Practice and Palliative Care
381 Stuyvesant St., Warrenton
540-347-4410
W: drmaybach.com
Please tell us about your business. What products or services does it provide?
We provide primary care to our patients. Additionally, I am board certified in Hospice and Palliative Medicine as well as Emergency Medicine. Therefore, we also provide some urgent care services as well as more palliative medicine at my office.
Were you surprised by your "Best Of" win? Why or why not? Have you won in past years?
I was surprised as I did not know that I was nominated. We have not won this award before. But, in 2019, my office received the Fauquier Times Reader’s Choice Award. What do you think is the reason our readers love your business enough to vote it "Best Of"?
Truly, I think that my office staff, (DeeDee Kanney, office manager; Beth Maybach, nursing supervisor; Autumn Hernandez, PA; Linda Ledbetter, PA; and our nursing assistants: Anneliese Maybach, Zahra Ezani, Jennifer Smith, Kristen Morrison, and Rachel Graham) is what makes our office so special. We all truly care about our patients as individuals and strive to help them be as healthy and happy as they can be.
Why do you enjoy doing business in Fauquier County, and how long has your business been located here?
Fauquier County is home to me. My office, the Medico-Dental Building, was one of the first facilities in town to be built as a doctor’s office in the early 1950s. My father took over the practice in 1972 and ran it with my mother until 2008, when he died unexpectedly. I have been running the office since then. My six siblings and I grew up in the office, and my daughters and many of my nieces and nephews have also grown up there, helping us care for patients and learning medicine along the way. It is a privilege to take care of our friends and neighbors, and fellow community members.
Is there anything else you would like readers to know about your business?
Palliative Care is a relatively new medical specialty. It involves caring for patients with life-limiting illness, whether that be lifelimiting from a time or functional standpoint.
We specialize in managing symptoms and pain that affect the daily lives of these patients. As a palliative care physician, I do not take the place of the patient’s primary care physician or other specialist but work as an extra layer of support for them as well as their families who are dealing with what can be difficult subjects.
Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?
I am the medical director for Heartland/ Promedica Hospice in Warrenton and feel blessed to work with this wonderful group of providers. As well as serving as the current Medical Staff President of Fauquier Health, I am serving on the Governor’s Board of Local and Regional Jails to review the medical care and deaths within our institutions. I am also a member of St. John’s church and support St. John’s school activities such as Oktoberfest and the Spring Gala.

The Corner Deli
100 N. James Madison St., Remington 540-439-2828
W: Cornerdeliva.com
F: @CornerDeli
Please tell us about your business. What products or services does it provide?
We serve classic American dishes. For breakfast we offer homemade gravies over fresh baked biscuits, omelets, steak and eggs, and breakfast sandwiches. For lunch we are known for patty melts, Ruebens. Cheesesteaks, assorted hoagies, and club sandwiches.
Were you surprised by your "Best Of" win?
Why or why not? Have you won in past years?
We were very surprised but very happy to win. Our family has run this business for 35 years along with our wonderful staff and the recognition from your readers that they consider us the best in three categories really means a lot.
What do you think is the reason our readers love your business enough to vote it "Best Of"?
I believe the focus we put on the customer experience has really been at the center of our business during and now after COVID. Through all the changes good and bad, through rolling out online ordering, we wanted our customers to want to come back.
Why do you enjoy doing business in Fauquier County, and how long has your business been located here?
We enjoy our regulars who, after 35 years, have become like family. It’s really great to see how during COVID, our regulars came and supported us and kept our doors open, even sometimes eating outside with winter coats. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about your business?
One thing I try to tell folks looking to try us out is we sell everything in bulk, from lunch meats to soups and chili. Also, our parking lot sometimes looks overflowing because our location is an ideal meetup spot between Charlottesville, Fairfax, and Fredericksburg. Most people bring individual cars, making it look more crowded than it really is. Come on in and talk to our staff…it’s likely we can fit you in!
Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?
We have always been great supporters of the Remington Volunteer Fire Department and first responders. If we close due to inclement weather we always try to send over a catering tray to keep them fueled up. We also have had partnerships with churches, Ruritans, and scouting programs.

493 Blackwell Rd., #319, Warrenton
540-349-3970
W: heartlandhospice.com/warrenton
Please tell us about your business. What products or services does it provide?
Hospice care is a special kind of care that focuses on the quality of life for people who are experiencing an advanced, life-limiting illness and their caregivers. We provide compassionate care in the last phases so that patients may live as fully and comfortably as possible. The service is covered 100% by Medicare and other insurances and includes medication coverage, medical equipment, and personal care supplies. Each patient has a team that includes a RN, LPN, CNA, social worker, spiritual care, nurse practitioner and physician that work together to manage symptoms so that a person’s last days may be spent with dignity and quality, surrounded by their loved ones.
Were you surprised by your "Best Of" win?
Why or why not? Have you won in past years?
We won “Best of” in 2022. Customer service, patient/family satisfaction, and going above and beyond is at the center of all we strive to do. While I am grateful and humbled that we won, I also know the care that my staff provides and how hard they work every day, I am not surprised. This honor reflects their dedication and passion for excellence.
What do you think is the reason our readers love your business enough to vote it "Best Of"?
Dedication, follow through, accountability, communication, outstanding customer service — these are all things we talk about often and expect from ourselves and all our co-workers in our office, and qualities that can be hard to find these days. We truly put the Heart in Heartland.
Why do you enjoy doing business in Fauquier County, and how long has your business been located here?
We have been in Fauquier County since 2010. We love working here because we are all local, and taking care of our community is our passion. It is a privilege and an honor to serve our friends, their families and loved ones. Is there anything else you would like readers to know about your business?
We love to educate and talk to our community, so if you have any questions, please don’t
hesitate to reach out to us anytime. The number one regret we hear: “I wish we had called you sooner”. Also, we have an adopted office dog, Bentley, who is in training to become a therapy dog for hospice patients. Can you tell us about any involvement in the community or nonprofits or causes you support?
We are non-profit and hold internal fundraising for patients/families who do not have insurance, so no one goes without care. We give out grants several times per year for patients to take “last wish” trips, host family gatherings/last wish weddings, reunions, etc., or just to help with mounting medical expenses. We frequently join local community days to help meet our neighbors at Warrenton Spring Festival, Remington Days, Marshall Autumn Fest, etc. Every Christmas, we run a blanket drive with community members and deliver a donated blanket to every hospice patient in need.

A Day Trip Back in Time
The Exchange Hotel Civil War Medical Museum in Gordonsville brings the past to life
BY GLENDA C. BOOTH PHOTOS COURTESY OF HISTORIC GORDONSVILLE
The imposing three-story, wooden building with a grand veranda next to Gordonsville’s railroad tracks has had many lives: a tavern, a hotel, a hospital, a Freedmen’s Bureau, and a boarding house. Today it serves as The Exchange Hotel Civil War Medical Museum, operated by Historic Gordonsville, Inc. to honor its history and those who lived and worked there, where visitors are taken through every era of the building’s rich history.
Many Chapters
Fifty-two miles from Warrenton, Gordonsville’s promoters boast that this central Virginia town, listed on the National and Virginia Historic Registers, has been at the crossroads of history. It initially earned that moniker because in the 1800s, two railroad lines met and crossed in Gordonsville, one east-west and another north-south.
Here travelers could change trains so a site beside the tracks was a logical place for a tavern and hotel, and one
was built in the 1840s by Richard F. Omohundro. After it burned down in 1859, Omohundro built a 5,000-squarefoot luxury hotel which opened its doors in 1860. Named The Exchange Hotel because passengers exchanged trains there. Guests were charged $1 a night for a room, and the hotel became known for its hospitality.
During the Civil War, trains carried war supplies and wounded soldiers, and the Confederacy converted the hotel into the Gordonsville Receiving Hospital in 1862. Wounded and dying men were brought there from the battlefields by the trainloads. In all totaling about 70,000, they were both Union (who were considered prisoners of war) and Confederate and were cared for by male nurses called “stewards” and doctors, who were also called “surgeons,” who gave equal care. In other words, they did not take sides in the war.
The hospital had 120 beds inside and 1,200 outside.

Dr. Marshall Adzima
Dr. Marshall Adzima was born and raised in Broad Run, Virginia and graduated from high school in Fauquier County. He graduated Magna Cum Laude from Virginia Commonwealth University with University Honors with both a Bachelor of Science and Doctor of Dental Surgery. Dr. Adzima is excited to return to the area where he was raised and give back to his community.
Dr. Adzima is committed to providing leading industry best practices and quality care for his patients.
Dr. Quinnie Phan
Dr. Quinnie Phan earned her doctor of dental surgery degree at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Dentistry. She graduated Summa Cum Laude and was ranked number one in her graduating dental class. She was inducted into Omicron Kappa Upsilon, a national honorary society serving the field of dentistry. She has been recognized by the Virginia Chapter of the American College of Dentists (ACD) and International College of Dentists (ICD) for her outstanding leadership, scholastic performance, and potential for impact on the profession of dentistry.
According to the organization’s website, “The once beautifully manicured lawn and gardens around the building were churned into a sea of mud and debris as tents and crude sheds sprang up to house the overflow of wounded. The fields behind the hotel became a garden of graves that would eventually claim a harvest of more than 700 soldiers.”
The building became a boarding house during the Great Depression. It was then abandoned until 1989 when Historic Gordonsville, Inc. opened the museum.
The Museum Today
Today, the War Room displays Civil War uniforms, bullets, canteens, guns, and other military gear as well as the field desk of the 13th Virginia Orange Artillery Battalion. Many Confederate Secret Service agents came through and posters explain how women like famous spy Belle Boyd became wily spies for the South, sewing messages into clothing and hiding secrets in their corsets and long hair mounted high.
The Medical Room is chock full of original medical equipment like a surgeon’s kit and a saw for amputations. One exhibit has recently-found human bones, likely from an amputation. The bullets of that era shattered bones when they penetrated. Doctors did many amputations to prevent soldiers from bleeding to death. The natural sponges they used were very unsanitary, germy, signs explain. A mirror under a surgical table reflects actual blood stains from that time.
The Hospital Nursing and Ward Room has five single, patient beds with gray, nondescript wool blankets. Hospital regulations posted on the wall prohibited “profane or obscene language,” “spiritous liquors,” and smoking and spitting on the floor. Everyone had to bathe before being admitted. Other rules: “Convalescents who are able must make up their own beds” every morning. “No Patient will occupy his bed without undressing.”
The Freedmen’s Bureau Room resembles a classroom complete with period desks and slates. This is where “Yankee schoolmarms'” taught at least 250 former slaves to read and write after the war. From 1865 to 1868, the Freedman’s Bureau operated the school and settled disputes between African American workers and employers. Posters describe some of the cases, like Sealy Banks, whose employer Mrs. Estes had not paid her “save victuals & clothes.” The Bureau directed Mrs. Estes to pay Banks $4 for one month’s work and to give her summer clothing. Another case involved three women who were “put out of ladies car at Gordonsville on account of color.” L

Gordonsville is the self-designated “Fried Chicken Capital of the World” and hosts a fried chicken festival the first Saturday of every October. The event, at the Volunteer Fire Company’s fairground, honors the African American women who from the 1850s to the 1930s sold fried chicken and other foods to train passengers through the trains’ windows. At the festival, fifthgeneration women use their ancestors’ original recipes. Festivities include a fried chicken and pie cookoff, art, crafts, and live music.
Civil War reenactors hold events at the Exchange Hotel Civil War Medical Museum several times a year.

Tethered
by Aryn Wicka
When Bealeton resident and avid romance reader Aryn Wicka couldn’t find the book she wanted to read, she wrote it herself. Her first novel, Tethered, was published in November 2022. She sat down with Warrenton Lifestyle and talked about her book and writing process.
Why did you decide to write this book? Was there a specific catalyst?
I actually dreamt one of the romantic scenes before I even started writing the book. When I woke up, I really wanted to read that type of. I looked and looked but couldn’t find anything that sparked my interest. So, I decided to write it myself.
Did you self-publish? Self-edit?
I self-published Tethered with a small hybrid publisher in Herndon. I did self-edit at first, but it can be a daunting job on your own. Luckily, the company I was working with had editors that helped with that process. Getting into the traditional publishers can be really difficult. I really loved my characters and story and truly believed other people would enjoy it. It’s worth it to me.
How did you come up with your title? It’s often the hardest part.
I didn’t try to name the book until I was probably halfway through writing it. The title Tethered just came to me organically, and it felt right. After all, the connection between Dani and Nathan is the driving force of the story, and the question is, “Will it make them or break them?”
How long did it take you to write, and was that longer or shorter than you expected?
It took me a little over a year to write. I started December 2019, and thought being home 2020 would be a huge help to get it written. Unfortunately, that wasn’t the case since I had two little kids and was working from home at the time.
What is your writing process?
I do my outline in pen and paper, and the dialogue as well. Then I flesh it out on the computer. Composing on paper just works for me, it feels more real. I’ll probably always do it that way. And then there were times when I had ideas while I was out and would dictate into my phone so I wouldn’t forget.
Did you have writer’s block at any point?
Yes, there were times I was blank, completely empty. I would try my best to get through it, sitting at my desk,
Synopsis:
A story of love and family in the face of complicated loss
Dani, who married her husband Joel after a quick and passionate courtship, is left to pick up the pieces of her life after his tragic death. While processing her grief she discovers that Joel may not have been the person she thought he was and turns to his older brother Nathan for solace. As the friendship grows, so do Nathan’s feelings for her. But Nathan has a secret of his own…will he lose her trust?

forcing myself to try to see the next scene. It did help in the end, but sometimes you can’t fight writer’s block. I would tell myself, “I’m going to sit here for 30 minutes or an hour and try to put something down. Usually, I was able to.
What did you enjoy about writing the book? What did you not enjoy/find the most difficult?
Any scene with Dani and Nathan was easy. I just loved them, they were both “me”. The hardest part to write was the history of Dani and Joel, but I had to write the background, even though I wanted to get on to the more exciting parts.
Another hurdle was getting over my fear. I’m a perfectionist, and because the book was so important to me, I was intimidated and would push off working on it or take breaks. But once I got into the story and it was flowing, the writing experience was just lovely.
What did you learn about yourself from the experience?
I was really proud of myself for finishing the book and seeing it through. This process made me realize that I am a creative person, I wouldn’t have thought of myself that way before.
What is the best advice you’ve received about writing?
I often think of the interview where Stan Lee is talking about how Spiderman came to be, and how his publisher thought it was ridiculous. And he goes on to say, “If you have an idea that you genuinely think is good, don’t let someone talk you out of it.”
What sort of feedback have you been getting? How do you deal with negative feedback?
I’ve only gotten positive feedback thus far, which has been amazing. But I know it’s not going to be everyone’s cup of tea.
Is there anyone who helped you to accomplish this?
My husband was wonderful through whole process. My sisters Shayna and Megan helped a lot too. Every time I was writing I’d send them chapters and ask, “Does this read well? Am I missing any details?” They would reach out sometimes looking for more chapters.”
Do you plan to continue writing?
Yes. I’m not done yet! Romance has always been my forte; it’s what I enjoy the most, so that’s where my writing will stay. My next story will be something different, still romance, but not with the same characters. I’ve started to work on it with an outline, but it’s still in the beginning stages. L

A Successful Recipe
Bringing Farm-to-Table and Southern Comfort Food to Warrenton
BY JAMES JARVIS
In the annals of culinary history, few materials have withstood the test of time quite like cast iron cookware.
From the hearths of ancient civilizations to American pioneers’ stove tops, the tale of cast iron cooking is a timeless culinary tradition that has played an integral role in kitchens across the globe and forged an everlasting bond between the chef and cuisine.
Alex Lepro and Wesley Ross, the owners of Cast Iron Craft House in Warrenton, are prime examples of this bond. Both were raised by families that deeply appreciated food; Lepro in Honesdale, Pennsylvania where his family instilled the value of fresh, local ingredients, and Ross in a small town on the Alabama Gulf Coast where his grandmother, and traditional Southern Cuisine with biscuits and gravy, reigned.
The Partnership
Despite their passion for cooking, it was not an initial career path for either. Lepro served in the Navy, and Ross pursued a career in information technology. But in 2014, destiny intervened, and the future partners met through a mutual friend while they were both working in Norfolk, Virginia.
“What we first bonded over was cooking and drinking,” Lepro said.
But it was not until several years after Lepro retired from the Navy and Ross moved to Washington, D.C., to pursue a job they reconnected and started cooking together.

Starting a restaurant
After a few years of catering family functions and events with friends for fun, the two started discussing opening a restaurant. After considering a location in Arlington and being stalled by the pandemic, they heard about a historic building in Old Town Warrenton that needed work but was a possible restaurant location.
When they first walked through the building, Ross and Lepro said they were hesitant about the massive undertaking of rehabilitating the historic building.
But after discussing it some more, the two realized the building aligned with their vision and it was an opportunity to be a part of a lasting legacy. So, they decided to give it a shot.
Ingredients for Success
Cast Iron Craft Brewing had a soft opening in April, offering a blend of Southern comfort and farm-to-table food.
“A flare from both of our upbringings, basically,” Ross said.
The restaurant's name pays homage to the old-world farmhouse cooking they both grew up with.
According to Lepro, everything from the flooring to the beer is sourced locally.
Lepro said he also takes great pride in the fact that the majority of their food and drinks, including desserts, cocktail mixers, bread, and dressings, are all handcrafted from scratch.
“We believe that the food that you eat and the drinks
street
The 1912 building was originally built as a Masonic Hall for the African American View Tree Lodge #142, who still owns it today and continues to meet in the upper floors.
The building’s lower floors have housed multiple restaurants over the years — many locals will remember the previous Sibby’s BBQ — and it is known for its rich history as a former jazz venue for black musicians during segregation. Lodge member Barrie Newman said, “It’s a gem for the community just because of the fact that we’ve had so much history come in and out of there, from local talent to national talent.”

that you have right there, it's important to know where they're coming from and what's in them,” Lepro said.
The menu offers a diverse selection of dishes, including Housemade Hummus & Baba Ghanoush and Pigpen Sliders, ensuring a variety of choices to suit every taste. Lepro and Ross also create a separate themed menu every few months to guarantee customers can always enjoy something new.
Cast Iron has received mostly positive reviews from the community, with many raving about the Smith Your Own Burger, Cheese Fritter Basket and Guinness cake (made with beer from Old Ox Brewery).
If you like a nice cocktail, Ross and Lepro also recom-
mend the Farmer Tan, made with Tequila, chipotle, pineapple, strawberry and lime juice, or the Lavender Haze, a vodka-based drink concocted using lavender and strawberry.
Future Plans
So far, Ross and Lepro have just renovated the bottom floor of the building. But they said they plan to build a patio and renovate the upstairs to host live entertainment, such as live music and sports.
“Upstairs will be where the TVs are hung, and the sports and stuff along the bar are going on. And then the live music in the evenings, comedy, open mic, karaoke, weddings and receptions,” Ross said. “And down[stairs] is more [where] we want you to sit and talk to each other.”
In the community
“Our goal is not to compete with anybody. Our goal is to bring people from Chantilly, Herndon, Gainesville, Manassas, Culpeper, all these people and bring them into town and say, ‘Hey, look, there's a new restaurant. We should go try it,” Lepro said. “And ‘Oh, by the way, did you know that Denim and Pearls is up the street? Did you know that Black Bear has great pizza?’”
Ross and Lepro said they are encouraged by the warm reception they’ve received, from other restaurant owners as well as customers, and emphasized their conviction in having created something unique.
“We really are trying to be a part of this community. We really are trying to make this successful,” Ross said. “We think we have a very successful recipe for this space. And we have great other plans that are coming…I’m excited.” L

A Family Farm
Jesse and Liz Straight’s Whiffletree Farm prioritizes the health of their animals, their customers, and the land
BY ERIKA WILSON
According to the late, beloved Pablo Teodoro of Great Harvest Bakery in Warrenton, “Whiffletree Farm is one of the finest sustainable farms in our area. They work hard to make sure that everything that anyone buys is sustainably produced and in the most humane way possible.”
Farm co-owner Jesse Straight said, “My fundamental principle is to raise food to prioritize health to the land, animals, and people.” The farm raises produce and meats without GMOs, hormones, chemicals, or antibiotics. The animals are grass-fed in pasture and happy.
Jesse said, “My work is to make animals happy. We give them fresh grass and the cows are chomping it up, they are looking fat and slick, and I can see that what we are doing is good for them and the land.”
Customers are happy too. The Whiffletree Farm Facebook page has garnered 10,000 followers, and a 4.9 rating in reviews.
And everything is delicious. Even if you have not heard of Whiffletree, you likely have eaten some of the food sourced from the farm by local restaurants like Great Harvest, Black Bear Inn, Denim and Pearls, Claires, and Cast Iron Craft House.
Jim Kiffney, who has been shopping at Whiffletree’s Farm store for a decade and counting, said, “They raise their meat locally, it is high quality, and it tastes great. I love that I know exactly where it came from, and that it is good for me and my family.” He also appreciates the efficient, friendly, and prompt customer service and their accuracy with his orders.
So how did they do it?
From the business model, it is easy to mistake this farm as one that has been here for generations, but Jesse and Liz Straight built this farming business with no family history or experience in farming.
Jesse grew up in Warrenton and attended Fauquier High School. He went to UVA, where he and Liz met. After

studying religious studies, and pre-med, Jesse married Liz and continued living and working in Charlottesville and supporting the community through Habitat for Humanity. He began researching and reading about farming when he started his own home garden and also started raising hens.
In 2009, the Straights moved back to Fauquier County because Jesse missed the bonds he had formed here. He said, “It is home. It is my history, and I have familiarity here. I love it because it is objectively beautiful. The streams, creeks, hills, and fertile greens are all beautiful and rich with history.”
Here they began their farming business with the support of family, friends, and the community. Still inexperienced, Jesse learned a lot from local farmers, even learning to slaughter chickens from a local friend.
As the business grew, the Straights added more acreage. Whiffletree employs seven full-time and four part-time employees, supported by a few interns and Jessie and Liz’s children, eight of the cutest little farmhands around.

Both Liz and Jesse love having a big family, and as might be expected, it is a unique one. The kids’ education is multifaceted, from homeschooling by Liz and working
Giving Back.
Since the Straights started out with little experience and learned as they went along, they love to share what they have now become expert at. Jesse founded an internship program as a way of giving back to the community that supported him through his journey. It is an intense four-month program offered in the Spring, Fall, and Winter. Interns are more than students or employees, though; they become like family. Many of their employees were former interns.

“The thing that makes me happiest and proudest would be the times I get to work with my kids. When we get to work with the cattle and move them to fresh pasture. I get to be doing the work I really love. And the kids are there and getting to laugh and joke and are proud of what they know. It is fun to praise them and see the pride in their faces” L

Local illustrator Ashleigh Corrin Webb collaborates with major musical talent Mary J. Blige on her new children’s book “Mary Can”
BY JENNIFER WALDERA ILLUSTRATIONS BY ASHLEIGH CORRIN WEBB PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER
In 2017, Fauquier native Ashleigh Corrin Webb was working as a full-time graphic designer when she was approached to illustrate her first children’s book after submitting her work on the website womenwhodraw.com. By 2020, she had moved to Gainesville and her work for that first book, “Layla’s Happiness” by Mariahadessa Ekere Tallie had won an Ezra Jack Keats Award for illustration. In 2021, Webb departed from her full-time job, embarking on the journey of devoting her time and talent to the illustration of children’s books. Now, in 2023, with numerous books under her belt, Webb’s latest work can be found in the new children’s book authored by none other than award-winning singer, artist, and actress Mary J. Blige.
“It was really exciting,” Webb said of the day her agent, Nicole, called to let her know that she was chosen. “I was considered among a small pool of illustrators for this fast-turnaround project. Nicole called and let me know that Mary chose me and that was the best day ever.”
The children’s book, titled “Mary Can”, is the

story of a young girl who is intent on following her dreams to become a singer even in a world in which she’s told she can’t. The inspirational message aligns perfectly with Webb’s goals of creating artwork with a message of positivity.
“The book is completely in line with the message I want to put out in the world to kids. I hope to have an optimistic, happy energy through what I create.”
In 2023, Webb also won the Margaret Wise Brown Board Book Award for her illustrations in “Me and the Family Tree” by Carole Boston Weatherford, a book that simultaneously celebrates family as well as individual uniqueness, a message that also seems reflective of Webb’s life and philosophies.
“I’m inspired by my own mom because she always inspired and encouraged me,” Webb said.
Webb’s mother, Sherrie Carter, who operated the shop “Sherrie’s Stuff” in old town Warrenton for a number of years, was a talented and creative artist who engaged her daughter in painting frequently as a child and who supported her love of painting and drawing.
My mom could do anything she wanted,” Ashleigh explained. “I watched her put up drywall in our basement, build birdhouses she’d sell in craft shows, make figurines out of clay, and more. She was an incredible role model. She introduced me to arts and crafts, and I would help her paint. She even let me paint a mural on my bedroom wall. She always encouraged my creativity.”
After graduating from high school, Webb earned her degree in Communication Arts from Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU). She focused on illustration and painting with an eye on marketing.
VCU’s School of Arts is also where Webb met her husband, Don Jonathan Webb, in 2006. He has been with Webb throughout her journey, and has

a deep appreciation for her skills and talents from her children’s book illustrations and design work to her painting, textile art, animations, and more.
“Ashleigh loves what she does. She doodles and sketches for the fun of it. I love seeing her delve into children’s book illustrations because she has a passion for teaching and mentoring, and children’s books offer that opportunity to teach valuable life lessons in relatively few pages,” he said. “Ashleigh’s work in children’s book illustrations is a natural fit. Her style has always been the perfect mix of charming and curious. I think kids naturally get lost in art that has that quality.”
He also enjoys being able to share her work with their children. “I am honored that we are able to read the books she’s illustrated to our kids. That’s such a cool experience.”
While Webb does continue to work in graphic design and marketing design in a freelance capacity, she has embraced the journey that she has taken to become the award-winning children’s book illustrator she is today.
“I always wanted to create things for children — my aesthetic fit that audience best,” Webb said. “The itch to illustrate was always there. This is a blessing.”
As for the future, Webb says that, having recently given birth to her second child, she’s learning to navigate the delicate balancing act between

She also has dreams of one day extending her artistic work to adaptations of a book into a television series, with the same eye on positively influencing children.
“Since I started I always wanted to create to encourage, inspire, and uplift young people and let them know that you can do whatever you want to do. I ask myself: what do I want to leave behind? I want to put my message out to the world — do what you believe in.” L

Harris Legacy Dentistry
Dr. Paul Harris has joined the Warrenton dental practice of Dr. Jeffrey Harris
PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER
Jeffrey A. Harris, DDS is one of the most popular dentists in Fauquier County and Northern Virginia, and one of the longest practicing. He has grown his practice over the years with a focus on honesty and integrity in a welcoming and calming environment, working towards making effective and efficient treatments and procedures available to everyone. He has been listed as a top dentist in Virginia Living Magazine and named Northern Virginia’s Top Dentist.
For an impressive 53 years and counting, he has been caring for his patients, even seeing second generations of families come through the door. Ninety-nine percent of his classmates from dental school have retired, and now he is looking to wind down a bit and take more time off.
Retiring was a hard decision for Dr. Jeffery, since his patients and his staff are like a family. Wanting the practice to continue, he embarked on a search for another dentist to join him and eventually take it over.
Wanting to ensure continuity of quality dentistry for both patients and staff, he had certain parameters. Selling to a corporate group was out of the question since it would have changed the dynamic of the practice. And he
Get to know Dr. Paul
Dr. Paul Harris was born in Washington D.C. and raised in Chevy Chase, Maryland. After pilot training for the USAF in Arizona, he returned to the east coast and attended Baltimore College of Dental Surgery. He and his wife of 21 years, Sofia, have lived in Fairfax County for over 20 years and still live there with their 16-year-old daughter, 14-yearold son, and an Akita dog. At this time, he said, he is driving a “reverse commute”, but plans to relocate to Fauquier after their daughter graduates from Thomas Jefferson High School Science Technology. He volunteers with the Civil Air Patrol and Mission of Mercy, and has flown supersonic in a T-38.
Dr. Jeffrey Harris, left, with Dr. Paul Harris
wanted an experienced dentist who had the same work ethic and philosophy on dental care.
He found the perfect candidate in Paul Harris, DDS, who had been practicing for 23 years (the last name is coincidental, the doctors are not related).
This opportunity was an answer to two prayers for Dr. Paul, who had been searching for an opportunity. “I wanted a practice where I could be myself and provide honest, quality dentistry and pain relief for my patients,” he said. “Also, I wanted to get away from the insanity of inside the beltway.”
After a very long vetting process of over a year, including meeting the staff for their approval, Dr. Paul purchased the practice. Specified in the contract was a provision that Dr. Jeffrey could continue practice for at least a year. Dr. Paul said, “I’d like him to stay as long as he wants. He’s why patients come here, and most of his staff has been there for over 15 years. He’s doing something right.”
How is it working out? Splendidly.
Dr. Paul, whose philosophy is “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it!”, said, “Jeff and I are like clones. Our dental philosophies are in lockstep and our diagnosis and treatments are identical. Our dental skills are equal, and we both prize integrity, which is not always the case in today's topsy turvy world. I allow Jeff to have confidence that both his staff and his patients will continue to receive the same quality care as he works a little less and lowers his golf handicap.”
The practice has been renamed Harris Legacy Dentistry in a nod to Dr. Jeffrey’s 53 years of practice. L

Resources from the Library to Enjoy Time Outside
BY JENNIFER SCHULTZ-ANGOLI, FAUQUIER COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
Yes, it’s hot in the summertime in Virginia. It’s sometimes tempting to hole up indoors in the air conditioning and play video games. But seriously, you can’t do that all summer — you’ve got to branch out a little. And maybe move around a bit. Nature and the outdoors are absolutely beautiful in this area this time of year. It’s time to get outside!
As with absolutely any subject you’re interested in, your library can help with summertime outdoor activity ideas. Do your research starting with the suggestions below, get a water bottle, a hat, a spray bottle to spritz yourself to keep cool, and head out into nature. Maybe pick a cloudy or even rainy day to take the edge off.
And if it really is too hot, stay inside and explore nature vicariously through the eyes of adventurous authors — we’ve included some favorites.

Officer Rhiannon Child
Live here. Work Here. Help Here. Love here.
STORY AND PHOTO BY ERIKA WILSON
Officer Rhiannon “Rhi” Child of the Warrenton Police Department takes one aspect of her job very seriously: how she affects the people she interacts with. She is aware she encounters people on what could be one of their worst days of their lives, and she recognizes the responsibility. “It can be challenging knowing you are going to have an impact on others’ lives in some shape or form,” she said.
A Warrenton native, Child realized in her junior year at Fauquier High School that she wanted to work in public service in the community. “I grew up in a first responder family. My father was a firefighter. It’s kind of in my blood,” she said.
After first working in an ambulatory service in Prince William County, Child, now 22 years old, started her current position in July of 2022.
She loves working with her department because it feels like a family. “I can call anyone at any time, and they will be there to support me.”
Always on the move, Child makes an effort to answer as many calls as possible. Each one is different, and she gains a new perspective with each new experience and with each new challenge. She said, “All I want to do is help people and be a role model.”
She found the most important thing about working in law enforcement is to remember to take care of herself in order to perform her job effectively. She believes, “This job will expose you to things that the average person probably won’t see in their lifetime. It takes a toll on your body. Eating well, exercising, and getting enough sleep are important.”
Remaining in the town where she grew up, Child lives with her boyfriend and dog Moose, and spends a lot of time with her family, who still lives in Warrenton.
She loves being part of a community where she knows the people, the restaurants, and the area. Molly’s Irish Pub, First Friday events, festivals, and Carousel Ice Cream are some of her favorite places in town, and Studio Luxe is her go-to for shopping.
While Child would be an asset to any law enforcement department, her familiarity with the close knit community that has helped her thrive all her life makes her job even more special to her. “I love serving and protecting the town that helped raise me,” she said.
In the future? She continues to pursue photography, which she studied for two years while at Fauquier High, and anticipates continuing her education and obtaining a college degree. L

AN ESSAY BY DON BACHMANN
Against the Flow
uncle. His persona was much to my liking, but what wasn’t to my liking was his penchant for improvement projects.
His latest venture was to redirect a small stream around a flat piece of his unused property, converting it into a recreation area for resort guests.
One look told you the task would be a difficult one. The creek, having been deluged by rain, overflowed and now followed the path of least resistance across the proposed site. Any course correction would involve extensive trenching and reinforcement requiring long hours of manual labor.
I was not enthused, but my uncle would not be deterred. He wanted to put things right, reclaim what was lost, and reap the benefit of more usable land.
To me, the project was useless hard work, and I said so to my uncle, “Wouldn’t it be a lot easier to accept things the way they are, rather than trying to change them?” I was tired and ready to give up.
He would just shrug and say, “Perhaps easier – but not necessarily better. Some things are worth saving.”
I persisted, “And you think, this is one of them?”
bles, and a large stone barbeque grill.
The guests seemed to like it as well, but they also seemed to take it for granted and leave their trash lying about. Subsequently, my aunt added clean-up duties to my list of chores proving yet again the old adage that no good deed goes unpunished.
I complained to my uncle that all our labor seemed wasted on people who just didn’t appreciate what was given to them.
He said, “Not to worry –someday they might, and so might you.”
“Someday this ... Someday that …” He used to talk like that, as if he expected people to change. I disagreed and thought I knew better.
Several years later, my uncle died from a heart condition, and my mother and I visited Aunt Anne before she relocated back to the city. I was never very good at expressing sympathy, so while Mom offered support to her widowed sister, I walked the property.
I eventually sat down by the creek bank we had built up. I tossed a few rocks into the stream.
During my childhood summers, my family routinely vacationed at my Uncle Joe and Aunt Anne’s fishing lodge on Big Bear Lake in Wisconsin. There we could escape the heat and humidity in Chicago and enjoy the milder days and cooler nights.
When I became a teenager, my parents decided I was old enough to spend the rest of the summer there helping my aunt and uncle. I worked for my room and board and a little pocket change – pocket change that my Aunt Anne ensured was fully earned.
Aunt Anne handled the business and was hard-nosed; life had made her that way. She would often say, “I ain’t no charity – if you want charity, go
to church.” I’m sure she weighed my worth on a daily basis.
Uncle Joe handled the outside work and was easy-going and easily liked. He was also a sportsman who had traveled the world and had the stories to prove it. Many a night, his guests and I would sit around the fire listening to him weave his tales of adventure.
On the whole, my summer was a pleasant one.
The job wasn’t tough. I carried guest luggage to and from the cabins, emptied mosquito traps, untangled fouled fishing tackle, whatever was necessary. I didn’t mind the work and considered myself fortunate to have it.
I learned to stay out of my aunt’s way, and, over time, I formed an attachment to my
He said, “The trick in life is in knowing what is worth the struggle. To me this is. In the end, you just have to make the call and hope it’s the right one.”
I just shook my head and resigned myself to spending the rest of that summer moving dirt and rock.
And so, we dug a trench from where the original creek had diverged and placed large rocks along the bank. We used smaller rocks to reinforce the old creek bed and made a dam with a rockwalled water collection pit to handle the severe storms which were sure to come.
The following summer we completed the recreation area, and I had to admit it looked pretty good. There was a sandbox, teeter-totter, tree swing made from an old truck tire, picnic ta-
I thought of the simple lessons Uncle Joe tried to impart to me. I say “simple” because he would often use the little things around him to make a larger point. His spirit prodded my thoughts, “Something that once was of worth can still be of worth – something of value can be reclaimed if one works towards that end.”
I think there is truth in this, and wisdom can be born of simple truths.
I do not know why wisdom imparted isn’t fully realized in the moment. I suppose, many times it just hides away waiting to resurface. It can happen any time or in any place – even while sitting on the bank of a stream. L
