few years back, my border collie encountered a groundhog, and the groundhog was slightly the worse for wear after their meeting. Luckily, I didn’t have to panic about an injured groundhog; I knew just who to call. My next door neighbor, Nikki Stamps, is a certified wildlife rescuer and rehabilitator. A quick call, and she scooted over to my house with a cat carrier and big, heavy gloves and scooped up the little animal, nursed him back to health, and set him free again. Truth be told, I am now a little disgruntled, because I have a feeling that that particular groundhog is the one destroying my petunias. And I also think he was responsible for a bite my border collie received since then (requiring a trip to the emergency vet), but, hey, what goes around comes around. You may wonder what all this has to do with anything. August is, after all, our biggest issue of the year, when the winners of our Best of Fauquier Contest are announced. But my point is that while all our local businesses contribute to our quality of life, it’s also our people who make up our community. In a way, I feel that every issue of Warrenton Lifestyle continues in the vein of August’s annual “best of” theme, as every article we do exhibits something different and special about our community. Nikki is just one of those great people who contribute to our community and help make our county one of the best places to live. Barry McMahon, as another excellent example, is simply one of the best guys around, I think everyone who knows him would agree. As a recovering alcoholic, his goal is to help as many people as he can who are struggling with addiction, and he thinks our close, small community here has a good shot at going a long way to battling the disease. As he says, “We don’t have that many people here, we can help everybody get on the straight and narrow.” One of his goals with his Irish Golf Academy is to work with kids to teach them both golf and life lessons, which will undoubtedly help set these kids on the road to success and health. I’d like to congratulate all the winners of our Best of Fauquier, and thank everyone in our community, businesses and people, who go a long way toward making Fauquier “the best.”

Paul Morrison
D I V O R C E M E D I AT I O N HOW IT WORKS 1. You decide to be in charge of the outcome of your own case instead of letting a Judge tell you what to do. 2. You or your lawyer contacts our mediation coordinator, Sharon Wiggins, who sends initial paperwork and sets up a pre-mediation conference call with Paul to ascertain the issues, schedule the date and place for the mediation and set ground rules. 3. Show up with an open mind and settle your case with Paul’s help.
COST Paul requires $3500 to be placed in a trust account and billed against. This fee is usually split between the parties. Paul bills at $350 per hour for mediation services. Most cases are successfully resolved in less than 8 hours.
About Paul Morrison
Paul began his own law firm in 1987, concentrating on trial work including primarily Family law. In 1999, Paul began performing neutral case evaluations and mediations with an emphasis on divorce cases.
With a success rate of over 95%, Paul began offering his services to the Northern Virginia, Piedmont area in 2017. As a practicing lawyer, Paul has a unique insight into the current judicial thinking, which gives him the tools to obtain inexpensive settlements and avoid costly and emotionally exhausting litigation for his mediation clients.

With a car being most people’s second largest investment in their lives, the relationship with it is an important one. “We have always been a service station. BEST AUTO PARTS SUPPLY
Chick’s Services “We are invested in Fauquier County and enjoy serving the public; We just so happen to do it with cars,” says Dale Edwards, co-owner of Chick’s Services Inc. in Warrenton. A family business for over 50 years, this auto repair/supply and convenience store has been the community’s ‘go-to’ for all things auto and tire sales. The family is no stranger to the industry. Dale’s father was a tanker driver for Exxon back in the 1960s. Back then, the business provided their drivers the opportunity to

own their own stations. The Exxon station his father built existed on the land directly across from where Chick’s now lives. It was later that the family purchased their current land and opened Chick’s Services. From Day One, Hazel Settle, Dale’s mom, has been the guiding force in the business, with Dale as her partner. Chick’s is focused on auto repair and tire sales but with gas and the convenience store as added bonuses. Dale says some of his most frequent customers know Hazel and have come to realize her knowledge of

will give them good, cost-effective work on their cars, using modern technologies with old-fashioned values. Dale says some days he spends more time on the phone advising customers than doing actual hands-on mechanics. Gas is also an aspect to the business that Chick’s maintains the highest standards and savings, recently by signing on to a fuel contract with Marathon gas. The perks of this recent change will benefit the consumer, like the 5 cents off per gallon loyalty program accessible right at the pumps. When asked, Dale says the easiest way to explain Chick’s success is their role in the community. Many members of the family also work in the community, including Dale, who is a golf coach at Kettle Run High School. He credits their amazing manager Wes, as a Godsend who helps run the day-to-day business, allowing Dale and Hazel more opportunities to be involved in other ventures. Residing in Fauquier is living the best of both worlds, says Dale. It’s country enough to be country while feeling almost like living in a different world away from the hustle and bustle of most of Northern Virginia. Living and raising his family in Warrenton has been a wonderful experience, he says. And now his grandchildren are enjoying their childhood the same way.

BEST HOTEL/LODGING
The Rooms Up There BY HEATHER TROBRIDGE
Passing by the historic building on Main Street in Marshall, you would never notice The Rooms Up There unless you were looking for it. Tucked privately in the back of the 200-yearold building at 8393 West Main, the upscale, three-room getaway is run in partnership by Dan Moore and Dianna Campagna. Its historic charm and luxury has been bringing in guests from all over to spend a weekend in the peaceful town since 2017. “I have always thought that, for whatever reason, I wanted an inn,” Moore said, and with experience in both interior design and hospitality, he is suited to — and successful in — the role. When Moore first visited the building, he knew that it was an ideal space for his vision. The original part of the building, a stone storehouse dating to 1805, was enlarged with the addition of a two-story log structure in the 1820s, and the building further expanded over time, ebbing and flowing between residential and commercial use in the interim years. He explained, “Everyone

has their gifts — when I look at a space, I don’t really see what’s there, I see what could potentially be there. It was very easy for me to imagine all these things that are now happening in this building; to envision the banquet facility in the back, and other features we’ve implemented. The building presented itself to me as what it has become.” And what it has become is a luxurious and private getaway space. Due to its rural feel, exceptional privacy, customizable features, and quiet environment, the guest experience at The Rooms Up There is nothing like an experience at a major chain hotel. Guest comfort was a high priority for Moore in the creation of The Rooms Up There. A crowning feature of the rooms are the lush and comfortable beds which caused one guest to describe his stay as “a decadent night's sleep.” From

the mattress to the sheets, everything was hand picked by Moore to provide an exceptional experience. Each room comes with a Sealy Posturepedic Hybrid Elite Kelburn king mattress, Matouk fine linens, blackout window treatments, individual in-room A/C temperature control, and newly renovated marble baths with a custom walk-in shower, both with hand-crafted Italian faucetry and luxuriously thick towels. The three rooms are connected by a comfortably furnished common space that Moore envisions will create connections between guests if they so choose. “We’re our own worst critics,” said Moore. “I’m okay with the imperfections of the building that dates back to the eighteen hundreds. I always say, ‘I don’t need it to look perfect, I just need it to look exactly how I want it.’” This attitude has left guests floored at the cleanliness and outstanding attention to detail put into the rooms by the housekeeping team. As one guest noted, “Every detail is thoughtfully perfect,” and another described the experience as “tasteful and very upscale.” theroomsupthere.com

BEST PET BOARDING
Paws Awhile Pet Motel How do two nuns start a successful business? With small business loans, hard work, a lot of faith, and unexpected blessings. Mother Eirene and Mother Raphaela purchased Paws Awhile Pet Motel in Warrenton almost 21 years ago. With Mother Evdokia who joined them 9 years ago and an awesome team, they have built Paws Awhile into what our readers consider the best pet boarding facility in Fauquier County. “We’re Orthodox Christians nuns and traditionally we work to support ourselves

with the work of our own hands,” they explained. Mother Eirene and Mother Raphaela initially explored various ideas for making a living including raising alpacas and llamas, hand bookbinding, and hand dipped candle making. When they realized that none of these seemed likely to actually reap enough to earn a living, several people suggested a dog boarding facility to them. They developed what The Fauquier Bank considered an exceptional business plan and, after convincing the skeptical SBA that nuns were indeed capable of running a legitimate business successfully, obtained loans to move forward with their dream. Part of the necessary collateral was loaned to the sisters and they were on their way. As they had known all along, if God wanted them to do this, it would all work out.

The nuns, who grew up taking care of and training their own and other neighborhood families dogs and cats, now consider caring for their four legged guests their calling. Mother Eirene explained, “As Christians and as Monastics, one of our goals is to serve others, whether they are two-legged or four-legged. They are all God’s creatures.” And, in doing so, they have formed a family with all their two-legged clients and four-legged guests. The pets are cared for with an unsurpassed attention to detail, which the nuns consider to be a factor in their success. The staff is carefully trained to be in tune with each pet as an individual. That way, if an animal is behaving in a manner that is unusual for them, the staff can tend to their needs immediately. The nuns and the staff take their jobs very seriously and realize it is a huge responsibility and privilege to be caring for families’ “fur babies.” This exceptional care earns Paws Awhile 95 percent repeat clients — some clients are bringing their third or fourth generation of dogs to them. The facility has grown and has a dedicated staff of 27, and each staff member is carefully selected for their caring personality, love of animals, and attention to detail. The nuns feel strongly that the employees are indeed part of the Paws Awhile family. “We do offer benefits of paid vacation time, health insurance, and other perks to each team member. After all, if you don’t take care of your team, you won’t have a team,” said Mother Eirene. Sound advice for any business. All the nuns continually say, “The community’s trust in us is humbling and gratifying. We look forward to many more years of service to the community.” pawsawhilepetmotel.com

Create Window Boxes like the Brits BY STELLA VERADUCCIA
T
he English are known for their love of gardening and can be said to have invented the “cottage style” in design and landscaping long before the rest of the world even knew that was a thing. The charming look of abundant, colorful window boxes with a riot of flowers and cascading greens is easy to achieve if you follow a few simple guidelines.
1. First, consider the container. If it’s not already attached to the house, make sure that the one you select is compatible with the architecture and that it’s installed securely enough to support the final weight when filled and watered. The top edge should be level with the bottom of the window and it should be roughly the same width. If the box is already mounted, especially under a second story window, you can do your planting in a plastic liner designed to fit inside the box, and then just drop it in. Whether you’re planting in a liner or directly in the box, there are three critical things to remember, and they are: (a) drainage (b) drainage (c) drainage. Did I mention drainage? Your window box is a large oblong flower pot and, like any other flower pot, it needs holes at the bottom for drainage – if yours doesn’t have them, fire up the drill. In addition to drainage holes, you should also place a very thin layer of packing peanuts or crushed Styrofoam cups across the bottom – this is a light-weight alternative to the traditional gravel base. Then fill the box up to about three-quarters full with fresh potting mix, not heavy garden dirt or topsoil, making sure to reserve

enough to fill in the spaces after you get the plants in. Now comes the fun part.
2. Thriller, filler, spiller. This is a popular formula for arranging plants in a window box (or any container), and it all but guarantees success. Put in girly terms, the thriller is the diva in the arrangement: a showy, high-impact specimen which serves as a dramatic focal point; it’s usually a taller, upright plant which commands attention, and it goes smack in the middle. The fillers are the diva’s BFFs: they surround the thriller, making up the main body of the planting and forming a happy, dense-looking mass of color; these babies help create the look of abundance that’s typical of cottage style. Finally, the spillers are the hangers-on: low, trailing plants placed at the front and sides of the box which flow over the edges and hang down; these can be green or flowering vines or any plant with a trailing habit, in colors that complement the fillers. Once you get the plants in the box all nice and cozy, fill any gaps with the remaining

For an extra touch of English whimsy, add a small ornament like a tiny teapot, decorative birdhouse, or miniature garden gnome.
3. As with girlfriends, an important issue in plant selection is compatibility. Depending on the exposure of the window box, the plants you select must have the same requirements for sun or shade. Similarly, some plants are delicate teetotalers that like to dry out between waterings while

garden center to be sure you’re combining selections that not only look good together but also thrive in the same environment. Done right, your mini cottage garden provides charming views from two distinct vantage points: when standing outside and looking at the house, and when sitting inside and looking out the open window (added bonus: gentle floral fragrance wafting into the room.) If you can’t get away to England this year, you can certainly bring a bit of the Cotswolds right to your windowsill. ❖

How to Attract Butterflies to Your Yard
An American Painted Lady Butterfly on a Dasiy flower.
BY JANENE CULLEN
E
veryone pauses to watch when a butterfly flutters by. There is just something about their beauty and grace that is magical to observe. Would you like to encourage more butterflies to visit your yard? You can when you bear in mind the important factors provided here. Plant a diversity of native plants. Butterflies are beautiful diverse creatures, and they require a diversity of food sources. Planting native plants is not only great for attracting butterflies, it benefits the environment and reduces the amount of maintenance your garden requires. The butterflies local to your area will enjoy and use native plants the most so when choosing native flowers, pick a variety of flower shapes, colors, and sizes to meet the needs of different butterflies. Provide a native butterfly maternity ward. Adult butterflies feed on nectar while caterpillars and larvae eat the leaves of specific plants. While most females will lay eggs on a variety of plants, others can be quite fussy. For example, monarch butterflies will leave eggs only on milkweed (Asclepias) plants. You need both a variety of flowers for nectar, but also a variety of native plants for a maternity ward for

butterfly eggs and young caterpillars. Provide native food spring, summer and fall. The key to attracting butterflies is nectar - and lots of it! Butterflies that overwinter as adults need nectar sources early in the season, and fall migrants, like monarchs, need plenty of nectar to fuel their long journeys south. It's easy to provide nectar in the summer, when most flowers are in bloom, but does your backyard offer nectar sources in March, or October? Plant your native flowers so that you have a succession of flowering nectar plants in bloom from spring through fall. You can find bloom times for Virginia native plants listed in the Virginia Native Plant Society web site vnps.org. Go for color. Butterflies love bright colors like yellow, red, purple, and blue. You should plant large masses or groupings of the same color so the butterflies can see the flowers from a distance. This
will entice them to fly closer to see if food is available. Butterflies are rather nearsighted. They can only see well within 10-12 feet of a flower. They can however, distinguish colors from a distance. Plant a wide variety of colorful flowers with simple open blooms, so butterflies can sit as they feast. Old-fashioned varieties of flowers often provide more of the nectar butterflies seek than modern, more colorful hybrids. Flowers with large tops like yarrow, zinnias and peonies are very attractive to butterflies. Colorful nectar plants and the butterflies that prefer them: • Baptisia Australis / Wild Indigo Dusky wing • Bee Balm / Swallowtails • Black Eyed Susan / Orange Sulphur • Butterfly Weed / Most types • Coneflower / Eastern Tailed Blue • Daisies / American Painted Lady • Milkweed /Monarchs

Butterflies thoroughly enjoy basking in the sunshine, especially early in the day, and they only feed in full sun. Like all insects, butterflies can't regulate their body temperatures internally. Instead, they rely on the sun's energy to warm their bodies so they can function. You'll see a butterfly perched on a

rock or leaf in a sunny spot, with its wings extended, warming up its flight muscles. When planning your butterfly habitat, think about providing good basking spots in the sunniest areas of your yard. Provide a spot to get a drink. Besides offering sun, you need to offer butterflies something to drink. A complete butterfly habitat will include one or more puddling sites. Butterflies can’t drink from bird baths or fountains. Instead, they get water and important minerals by taking up moisture from mud puddles. Sink a dish tub or bucket in the ground, fill it with sand, and make sure to wet the sand down each day. If you use drip irrigation to water your garden beds, this can also provide puddling sites for butterflies. Protect your butterfly habitat from the wind. The calmer the environment, the more attractive it is to butterflies. Try to place your nectar and host plants where your house, a fence, a group of shrubs, or a line of trees will buffer the wind from your butterfly garden Keep some distance between bird feeders and your butterfly habitat. While creating a backyard wildlife habitat for both birds and butterflies is a great thing to do, you need to think of the predator-prey relationship. If you place a birdbath right in the middle of your butterfly garden, you're providing one stop shopping for hungry birds. Consider placing any bird feeders or birdbaths in a separate area of your yard – away from your butterfly habitat. Don't use pesticides! This one should be obvious, right? If you're trying to support insect life in your backyard, you don't want to use chemicals or other substances that kill them. One of the reasons that we see fewer bees and butterflies now is the prevalent use of pesticides. Pesticides don’t discriminate between insects. They kill the few unwanted pests, along with all the good insects like earthworms, fireflies, and butterflies. The weed killer “Roundup” in particular, targets milkweed, the sole food source of the monarch butterfly. Find alternatives to pesticides such as crop rotation, companion planting and other organic gardening methods. Provide a native pollinator habitat. This is a bit different than gardening for aesthetics. Caterpillars need foliage to feed on, so you'll have to be tolerant of a few leaves with holes, or even plants that

have been defoliated. Some caterpillars will even feed on the plants you intend to eat yourself, like dill or fennel (which are the host plants for black swallowtail larvae). Learn to share. Plant some extra so there's enough for you, your family, and the caterpillars. Provide cover for overwintering butterflies and caterpillars. We tend to think of butterflies as summer insects. Ever wonder where they go in the winter months? Yes, monarch butterflies migrate to Mexico, but most of our butterflies survive the winter by simply hiding out until warm weather returns. Butterflies may overwinter in any of their four life stages. Swallowtails usually wait out the winter weather in the pupal stage, tucked away inside a chrysalis in a protected location. Many tiger moths, most notably the Isabella tiger moth which goes by the nickname woolly bear as a caterpillar, overwinter in the larval stage. A number of butterflies survive the cold in the adult stage, by simply tucking themselves under loose bark or hiding inside a tree cavity. So how can you provide winter shelter for butterflies and moths in different life stages? Hint: don't rake all your leaves. Leave the fall leaf litter in at least part of your yard for hibernating caterpillars. Brush piles and stored firewood also make excellent shelter for overwintering butterflies. Research has shown that butterfly houses are generally not effective. Butterflies rarely use them, but wasps do. Butterflies are more attracted to a natural environment like hollow logs, cracks in stone, loose bark, or a stack of firewood. A word about the Butterfly Bush: Butterfly Bush is usually the first plant many homeowners think of for butterflies. While butterfly bush does bloom for a long time and attract a lot of butterflies, keep in mind that it's an exotic, invasive plant that should probably be avoided. Several varieties of butterflies (like the Monarch) will not lay their eggs on a Butterfly Bush – so you have a food source for the adults, but nothing for the next generation. ❖ ABOUT THE AUTHOR Janene Cullen has lived in Haymarket for 16 years. Woodstock was in no way a hippie utopia. Rain, transportation problems, and poor planning made the three day event uncomfortable and sometimes downright dangerous. But what drove the festival was the power of music as a communication medium and a foundation for a dialogue about who we were as a society and what we might become. From acts as diverse as Ravi Shankar, the legendary Indian sitarist who tutored the Beatles’ George Harrison, to the politically vocal Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young, and mainstream folkies like Joan Baez, appeared at the festival. All believed in the ability of music to influence the lives of people and the directions of societies. But of all the things that were dreamed for Woodstock, what remains most vivid are the images the festival generated. Joni Mitchell’s song “Woodstock,” quoted above, is based on the tales told to her by David Crosby, Steven Stills, Graham Nash, and Neil Young (Mitchell was prevented from attending by her manager). The song, recorded by Crosby, Stills, and Nash, cemented the images and ideals that emerged from the festival in the minds of a generation — even when those images did not always match reality. Such is the power of music. The belief that something unique and magical happened at Woodstock has not easily been shaken and its memory continues to fuel the dreams and imaginations of young people, musicians, and promoters. Two successor festivals have followed. One featuring many of the original Woodstock artists occurred in 2009. This month, a Woodstock 50 festival will be held on the exact dates of the original festival at Watkins Glen, New York. Along with contemporary musicians, several of the original acts also plan to appear at Woodstock 50, including Santana, John Sebastian, and David Crosby. Not all of what came out of the original festival was hype. For all the hardships imposed by rain, bad planning, poor technology and lack of food and medical supplies, films like Woodstock: 3 Days of Peace

& Music, shot during the festival, show that it was possible for half a million people to manage to enjoy the music, pool their resources, and get along without the violence that characterized later festivals like Altamont, later that same year. And then there was the music. Thirteen of the 33 acts that appeared at Woodstock are now members of the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. The comprehensive list includes the likes of Joan Baez, Santana, The Grateful Dead, Creedence Clearwater Revival, John Sebastian (with the Lovin’ Spoonful), Janis Joplin, Sly and the Family Stone, The Who, Jefferson Airplane, The Band, Crosby Stills, Nash, and Young, The Paul Butterfield Blues Band, and Jimi Hendrix. This reflects a vast range of musical styles, from rock to blues to folk. There was not a day of the festival that a future Hall of Fame act was not onstage. Slightly less well-known acts such as Country Joe and the Fish, Tim Hardin, Canned Heat, Mountain, Joe Cocker, Ten Years After, and Johnny Winter also took to the stage. For those who were there, those who wished they were there, or those who just want to explore what all the fuss is about, the Fauquier County Public Library has several resources that can help music lovers relive those days of peace and love. ❖

Preserving an Ancient Craft THE PIEDMONT LACE GUILD OF VIRGINIA
STORY BY PAM KAMPHUIS | PHOTOS BY JORDAN KOEPKE
ears ago, I read an article about the return of the popularity of the “Needle Arts” after September 11, 2001. I cannot find it or credit it, but the main points stuck with me. The terrorist attacks shook women to the core. It awakened needs in them that had been buried in womankind for decades, maybe even close to centuries. The need to connect with other women, of past, present, and future as well as the need to produce something tangible and handmade, even to the point of feeling that you are leaving something of yourself on this earth, something to be treasured by future generations.
In southern Fauquier County, there is a group of twelve passionate women who feel this way, and are seeking to preserve their craft: the fine art of historical lacemaking. The Piedmont Lace Guild of Virginia members use vintage and modern techniques to create both old-world-style laces as well as contemporary modern designs. The mission of the guild is to promote and preserve the knowledge and appreciation of the fine art of lacemaking in all its forms and expressions, ancient and modern. The guild’s members have a vast amount of experience. Many are proficient enough to be accredited by England’s

History OF LACE

Lace Guild and the International Organization of Lace, Inc. In this very active group, some are teachers at national tatting workshops, and some create their own original patterns. Members attend national lace making workshops each year, and two members have become area business owners and have the lace as part of their business. The group is a close one, and is treasured by its members. People who stick with a passion for a very long time like this and establish a high level of proficiency are rare. But there’s no snobbery in this group. “Nobody’s bossy here, we are all team players. We empower each other and look to each other for advice and suggestions,” said Birgitte Tessier, vice president of the guild. With members with decades of experience in lacemaking, the group is very positive and informative, a great environment to learn the art. I met Anita Barry, treasurer of the Piedmont Lace Guild, briefly for coffee when I picked up the examples of lace she had brought to be photographed, and while we sat and talked, she tatted, which is making lace by knotting thread with a shuttle. I watched her tat, knotting and shuttling back and

Both Italy and Flanders (northern Belgium) claim to have invented lace in the 15th century, and it quickly spread to other parts of Europe. Because of the immense amount of time and expertise involved in making fine needle and bobbin lace, it was extremely valuable and only worn by royalty and the very wealthy. Some examples of the craft were almost priceless and subject to smuggling and economic sanctions during warfare. Fine pieces were handed down through generations of families, often being described in detail in wills to establish authenticity. The craft maintained its exclusivity until the first machine-made lace was made in England in the mid-nineteenth century when the Leavers machine produced complete lace with net, patter, and outline. This development left the handmade lace to the domain of those dedicated to keeping the craft alive for artistic and historical reasons.
forth, the thread working through her fingers steadily and evenly. She showed me the basic knots she was using, and the importance of keeping the correct tension on certain areas of the thread. As I watched her, I was drawn, almost hypnotically, into the smooth and repetitive process, which seemed almost meditative.

“We all have a creative spirit within us. Most of us make lace for the pleasure of giving, to commemorate an event. Perhaps a cross bookmark as a memorial or to celebrate the birth of a baby.” said Anita. “There’s something about being able to make something as a gift for another person. A sense of warmness, a sense of accomplishment for creating something from nothing. Lace is very dainty, but it’s strong, it lasts, it becomes a keepsake, an heirloom. Today, as well as in the past, handmade lace is a luxury. Considering the hundreds of hours put into a piece and the skill necessary for such intricate work, it is impossible to put a price on handmade lace items. It is truly a labor of love. ❖ All laces pictured were hand-made by members of the Piedmont Lace Guild
PLGV meets the first Saturday of the month (except July and August) at the Remington United Methodist Church, 150 West Bowen Street in Remington, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. A weekday lacing session called the “Lace Cottage” is also held on the third Thursday of the month at a member’s house. New members are welcomed warmly at any time. Lessons are held periodically by PLGV. Orlean resident and renowned swing dancer, eWa Burak; working to save the Lindy Hop
SWING of things

“It don’t mean a thing if it ain’t got that swing,” Duke Ellington famously sang. Those words hit the airwaves in 1931, four years after the Lindy Hop, a swing dance revolution that began in the Savoy Ballroom in Harlem and was named after Charles Lindbergh’s historic solo transatlantic flight in 1927, was born. The Lindy Hop continued to be fantastically popular through the World War II era,

and then faded almost from sight as ballroom dances grew in popularity. Then, in the 1980s, the dance that never really went to sleep in New York City underwent a revival throughout Europe. In a basement in her native Stockholm, eWa Burak and the group she danced with, The Rhythm Hot Shots, were part of that resurgence. Now a resident of Orlean and an internationally-known swing

dancer, eWa continues to teach and dance both locally and internationally. Born during both the Depression and segregation, the Lindy Hop, according to eWa, is “a happy dance,” which evolved from the need for happiness in those difficult times. She said, “It’s simply impossible to feel blue as you move to a good swingin’ song… swinging out with a partner is such a great way to connect and have fun beyond words.” Usually performed to music from a live band, the energetic dance has African-American roots and rhythms, combining elements of both swing and jazz. There are some acrobatic and athletic moves such as the ‘air step’ (modernly known as the ‘aerial’). It is important to note that while there are technically steps and counts to

the dance, the Lindy Hop, as eWa pointed out, is a dance you feel, a way to connect with the music and your partner and see where it takes you. What makes the Lindy Hop truly special is that its Harlem roots and heavy reliance on improvisation quickly spread as a social dance, eventually reaching Hollywood and even appearing in movies such as the Marx Brothers’ A Day at the Races and Hellzapoppin’. In 1986, eWa joined The Rhythm Hot Shots, a professional working dance performance company in Sweden that had recently discovered the Lindy Hop and was working with jazz legend Al Minns to learn the dance. eWa’s background as a competitive gymnast served her well in this energetic dance with its acrobatic elements. The group practiced in the basement of a bank and performed locally, eventually growing in popularity and travelling to perform and teach internationally. Then, in 1987, Frankie Manning came to Sweden to work with The
Rhythm Hot Shots and helped to change dance history. A Lindy Hop legend, Frankie was part of a group called Whitey’s Lindy Hoppers, well-known in the 1930s and ’40s for inspiring and developing the dance. They had started at the Savoy Ballroom and went on to perform on screen and in theatres. Among other things, Frankie was responsible for adding the air step and acrobatic movements to the dance. He had long retired from dancing and was working as a U.S. Postal Worker when he noticed that there was a resurgence of interest in the dance occurring not only in Sweden, but also in London and Los Angeles, and he was excited by it. Looking back to those early years of the Lindy Hop revival with The
Rhythm Hot Shots, eWa said, Frankie must have been amused by their attempts to learn the dance. She imagines him thinking, “How in the world can these pale Swedish cats find inspiration for the Lindy Hop trying to learn from old dance clips in a Stockholm basement far away from the big bands of Harlem?” He stepped in, and, eWa continued, “Frankie gave us everything that we never could have possibly learned by just watching the movies clips.” Dancing with Frankie helped the group understand the AfricanAmerican culture and spirit of the dance. He taught them that at its heart, the Lindy Hop was about connecting to the music in a way they couldn’t glean from just watching old movies and learning the technical dance steps. In 1989, eWa and The Rhythm Hot Shots formed The Herrang Dance Camp in Sweden, the biggest swing dance festival in the world, where they taught, and continue to teach today, swing dances, including Lindy Hop, of course. Frankie was invited to the camp as

heartedly in the way he did in the 1980s. I love how Frankie still is part of what's going on. I pack his framed picture when I travel, maybe silly, but he still inspires me, and I believe all Lindy dancers out there should know about him and the history of the dance.” While she’s danced with several partners over the years, eWa continues to dance and perform with her longtime partner, historian Lennart Westerlund, an original member of The Rhythm Hot Shots. They meet about six times a year to teach and perform together. He resides in Sweden and she here in Orlean with her husband and two children. Thanks to enthusiasts like eWa, the Lindy Hop continues to grow in popularity, and there are even competitions for it now, which eWa is invited to judge. When asked how she can judge a dance that is based on connection and feeling, she simply said, “I judge from the heart.” As an instructor, eWa focuses

a special guest, teacher, and the most important link to the past. He kept coming back between the years of 1989-2007. During this time, eWa had the privilege of partnering with him. She recalled, “I remember him saying, ‘Bow to the Queen,’ and rocking back on his left foot to give me space. And boy, did I feel like a queen as I did my swivels! Frankie always reminded us to fully enjoy those short three minutes we share in the dance.” He gave her the nickname “W” by which she is still known to many in the dance world. Frankie continued dancing until he passed away at the age of 95. “Frankie genuinely shared his passion for the dance with us and the world. He was more than just a great dancer, he was a beautiful human being and connected with people.” said eWa. “And I can’t help but wonder what would have happened with the revival if Frankie was not willing to step back in to the scene so full
on imparting the wisdom she learned from Frankie Manning – to bring her students to the music and not be stuck with patterns. “It’s a freeform dance with basic steps; it’s more about connecting to the music and your partner,” she said. “I feel passionate about passing the Lindy Hop on to our youngsters. As we get older, it seems like it is getting harder to muster the courage it takes to try new things. If you have a chance, step in and learn when you are young, and the dance will be yours to enjoy for the rest of your life.” eWa offers advice to anyone who is interested in learning the Lindy Hop, or any dance: “You have no idea where it will take you. Dive in, try something new, say yes and take a chance.” ❖
Today, eWa continues to teach Lindy Hop both internationally and locally. Especially passionate about passing on the dance to our youth, she has a program she takes to local schools, and recently taught the Charleston at Wakefield Country Day School and The Highland School for their Roaring ’20s/Great Gatsby parties. She also enjoys working with homeschool groups and offers private instruction. In addition to her youth programs, eWa is in the process of developing a public speaking historical talk about the dance and will be presenting at the Bealeton Library in September. She has worked in collaboration with local yoga instructor Pietra Mercier and local swing band The Silver Tones who play locally and travel around DC. She is excited to share that now classes are available through Gotta Swing, a Northern Virginia based dance club that has a space in Warrenton. If you are interested in swing dancing, you are more than welcome to contact eWa through her website, ewaburak.com, or through her Facebook page at facebook.com/wburak

Barry McMahon, former bartender at McMahon’s Irish Pub, and current owner of Warrenton’s Irish Golf Academy. The school recently opened a new facility at Chestnut Forks.
A STORY TO TELL
here’s an old Gaelic proverb that says, “He that travels has a story to tell.” Sometimes the story spans continents and seas and sometimes it lies wholly within one’s heart and mind. For Barry McMahon it is both. His journey has brought him from County Clare, Ireland to Warrenton; from a young man to a business owner; and from the guy who put the fun in dysfunctional to the man who has learned to overcome his burdens and give to those around him. This is his story. I first met Barry McMahon eight years ago. He was bartending at the time and, like most Irish bartenders, was quick witted, good natured, friendly, and genuine. He was the affable bartender with the ready drink and a good story. An excellent golfer who could talk sports, gambling, and world travels, he liked telling ribald jokes and recounting adventures he’d had with his friends. Like all good Irishmen, he liked to share stories, including how he hit a hole in one the first time he played golf and has been seeking his second ever since. Barry’s story starts with golf. “It’s kind of bred into you,” Barry explained. At age 13, he started hanging around the golf courses in County Clare. “As kids in Ireland, the only form of income we could get was to go to the golf course and find a ton of golf balls and sell them back to the golfers for $5 a dozen. So since we were hanging around there, we just started to play golf. It was £39 (about $44) for my dad to get me an annual membership to the golf course, and I had to beg him for two summers to do it; that’s how tight money was. Then I played a lot and got

very good, and the pro ended up giving me lessons for free every Thursday just because he could see how dedicated I was to it.” Unfortunately, Barry lost his dad at a young age when he suffered a heart attack on the golf course the day after he bought his son a beer for the first time. The sudden and tragic loss of his father, the regret of lost moments, and the burden of life ahead without his “number one fan” would prove difficult to navigate for the 17-year-old. In an attempt to shield his hurt from the outside world and to douse his pain, Barry turned to alcohol and anything else that would help him forget. He even abandoned golf for awhile. At 20 years old, looking for a fresh start following the death of his father and wanting to travel the world, Barry began traveling in Europe and then the United States, making his way to New York City where he had some connections. It wasn’t long before the young man with some cash in “the city that doesn’t sleep” found ways to spend his money and entertain himself that almost always involved alcohol and drugs. His demons had followed him in his carryon baggage. When he drank,
Barry traded golf for partying to cope with the death of his father.

he forgot. When he drank, he became the life of the party. His crazy antics made him popular and all the lads wanted to hang out with him. Lonely nights were replaced with all-nighters of forgetfulness. “Alcohol was my best friend,” Barry admitted. Finally, a ray of light appeared in the form of his uncle. His dad’s brother showed up on his doorstep, and by the next morning had bought him a set of golf clubs and arranged a tee time. Time for Barry to get back to what he knew and loved. “When it comes to passion for something, you can’t hide it away, even from yourself,” Barry said. His uncle helped him realize that instead of associating golf with the pain of losing his father, he could use the sport, and by extension, those memories, to remember and honor him. He returned to Ireland briefly but soon fell in with the same people and the same habits. So Barry returned to the U.S., this time to the environs of Washington D.C., and this time with his clubs. He worked in a number of Irish bars, finally arriving at what seemed like the edge of civilization, Warrenton. He began working at a local bar, McMahon’s Irish Pub, for new proprietor and

friend Francis Fusco. It was during this time that he began wondering how he could turn his love of the game of golf into a profession, perhaps as an instructor. However, he would have to clear a bigger hurdle first. Living in a room above the bar and a world away from most of the people he knew, it wasn’t long before the solitude took its toll. He was still able to maintain a mask of normalcy, but those close to him could see the cracks in it. Barry needed help. Ultimately, Francis took the first step in intervention and with a firm fatherly hand gave him an ultimatum: “I’m your friend, but I can’t help you anymore. I’ll take you to rehab, or here’s a ticket to go see your mom. I have her here on the phone.” Barry chose the latter, and the next morning he was met in Ireland by his mother. Her stern demeanor said it all. She told Barry in no uncertain terms that they were going home, that he was to get a good night’s sleep, and that in the morning he was going to see Michael O’Doherty, a local therapist and bioenergist. Barry related, “My mom said, ‘You’re coming home to quit drinking and this guy is going to help you get in the right mindset to take care of this.’ With Michael, it was just like, ‘hey, get off your ass, change your diet, walk your dog, and stop isolating yourself like a depressed freak.’ He just kicked me in the ass and told me it was time to get my life together. But he did it in a therapeutic, enjoyable way. I went to my first ever AA meeting the next day.” After Michael, Barry worked with another County Clare local bioenergist and therapist, Jeff McInerney. The belief of the bioenergists is that a healthy being comes from understanding our unconscious mind. Since our reality is created by our thoughts, in order to be at our healthiest we must have our healthiest thoughts. In other words, Barry would exorcise his own demons by driving out the negative thoughts, guilt, and other burdens he had buried deep and was drowning with alcohol. Then, after recognizing the bad, it would be time to focus on the good. After four days of talking with Jeff, Barry came to realize the “sky was blue,” which was something he had forgotten. There was still a lot of good in the world. It was then he found the will to get better. Jeff helped him to help himself. Treatment for addiction requires more than a positive outlook on life, but having a focus on the future, goals, and a purpose is a big step in the right direction. It was time to look up instead of down and focus on what was ahead instead of what he needed to leave behind.

handicapper or scratch golfer. These qualities have helped the Academy outgrow its original venue and it has now moved to a larger home at Chestnut Forks. In addition to the larger physical facilities, Barry has formed mutually beneficial partnerships with local entities like Fauquier Country Club, created summer camps for young golfers, and started a travel business leading golfing ventures back to his native Ireland. These golf outings aren’t your typical tours; he literally invites his travel companions into his home. The goal is for his guests to see “his” Ireland, while shedding their worries for a time. He gets his greatest joy working with young people, where he feels he can make a difference. He also knows that while he is giving by helping them improve their swing and imparting the life lessons that golf can provide, he is also receiving strength. “It’s those kids that keep me strong. I might be feeling down and then I’ll get a text asking me a question, thanking me for a tip, or inviting me to their graduation and I know I’m where I’m supposed to be,” Barry explained. The Irish are known for their belief in the strength of the family and community, a belief that makes the Irish Golf Academy much more than a business… it’s Barry’s investment in Warrenton. Part of Barry’s purpose in life is to help others with addiction problems. He encourages people to reach out to him. “If my phone rings a hundred times a day with addicts calling me, that’s what I want my life to be. The more addicts I can help, the better,”

“Do what you love, and love what you do,” Jeff advised. Barry loved golf and Jeff helped him to realize it could be his future. With the unconditional love from his family, positive support from his friends, and a new focus, Barry saw his future. At the start, he attended Alcoholics Anonymous meetings seven days a week. “My first six years of sobriety, I pretty much lived at AA,” Barry explains. “Without AA I wouldn’t be sober today.” Alcoholism is a disease and can only be treated by steadfast determination and the willingness by the afflicted to want to get better. What is just as important is to have the support around you to prop you up when needed. Barry’s mom, Francis, Jeff, other true friends, and now his girlfriend Katie are all vitally important. Of course, Barry also still attends AA meetings and it’s this village of support that over the last seven years has saved a young man from the road to nowhere to being the entrepreneurial success he is today. Barry is thankful for those who have helped him on his journey and is dedicated to giving back. Barry returned from Ireland and was soon certified as a golf instructor. He opened his successful golf instruction school, Irish Golf Academy, in Warrenton in 2013 and now uses his natural gifts, his love of golf, and his ability to communicate effectively to achieve his goals. The legacy of golf passed down from his father has become the means to transform his life. Since opening, he has instructed over 2000 golfers in the finer nuances of the game. His patience, affability, and demeanor make him a great instructor whether you’re a high

he said. “Working with another person who is struggling is more valuable than any AA meeting I could go to.” He feels Warrenton is the type of close-knit community that can successfully support recovering addicts. “We really need to get back to the community, and that’s what Warrenton has. We drive down the street and blow the horn and wave at people, and we all take care of each other. We don’t have that many people here, we can all help each other get on the straight and narrow in this community.” The road to recovery is ongoing, but if you’re on the right road the traveling is made easier. There’s another Irish proverb that says, “the longest road out is the shortest road home.” In other words, time and effort pay off in the end. “There are a lot of takers and they eat well,” he said, “but the givers always sleep well. I want to be a giver.” David Feherty, a fellow Irishman, professional golfer, author, noted wit, and a man who is also dealing with addiction wrote a book laughing at himself called Somewhere in Ireland a Village is Missing an Idiot. Well I’m not sure about Mr. Feherty, but I know for a fact that somewhere in County Clare there is a village missing one heckuva guy and that’s Warrenton’s gain. ❖

Nikki Stamps’s Dedication to Raptor Rehabilitation and Environmental Education STORY BY NATHAN RAY PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE
Do you want to see a baby vulture? He’s our latest education hopeful!” This is a rather surprising proposition, especially if asked while one is being ushered into the dining room of someone’s house. But on the bright summer’s day when this question was proposed to me, I wasn't just at any residence; I had the pleasure of being a guest in the home of Nikki Stamps, a Department of Game and Inland Fisheries and U.S. Fish and Wildlife Licensed Wildlife Rehabilitator and Master Falconer, in Warrenton. Jovial and animated, Nikki is dedicated not only to providing medical attention to injured birds of prey, but also to educating the people of Fauquier and surrounding counties on the importance of such animals in the ecosystem of northern Virginia through her new nonprofit organization, Bird in the Hand. Her

enthusiasm for her work radiates out of her like beams of light, and she flutters around her home and yard cooing to her falconry birds and rehabilitation raptors the way one might gush to a pet dog or cat. Following her through the kitchen, I was seated facing a table, at the center of which gently rested an animal crate. As Nikki opened the door to the carrier, the occupant was revealed: a young, molting vulture, with grey fluff and black feathers mingling along its surprisingly large, stooping frame. “He’s the latest hopeful for my

educational program at Bird in the Hand,” Nikki explained. “According to the young man who rescued her, her family had been living in a barn loft for the last several years, and the farmer decided he didn’t want them in the barn anymore. He went into the loft and scared the group of vultures out. But this one couldn’t fly so he hit it, breaking its wing in three places and injuring its right leg in the process.” Although the goal of animal rehabilitation is always to rehabilitate the animal so it can return to life in the wild, medical examinations indicate that this young scavenger will never be able to fly, and therefore cannot live in his natural habitat. So Nikki hopes that one day he will be able to serve as an ambassador with her raptor education program. “What I’m trying to do

is get him over his fear of humans,” Nikki elaborated. “He’s really terrified. He’s going to be on the counter in his crate for the next couple of days. The last time I worked with a non-releasable vulture it was very successful, so I’m hoping he will come around.” Despite the impressive collection of natural wonders that decorate the walls of her cozy home, Nikki has not always worked in animal rehabilitation. “You get redefined over and over again through life,” she asserted. This belief is evident in a reflection upon her career path, which has seen Nikki’s energetic migration from one enterprise to the next. From becoming a licensed S.C.U.B.A. instructor to exploring as a boat captain and skydiver to working as an RN and operating room nurse for over 30 years, she has focused

not only on filling her time with action, but also on facilitating the journeys of others. “Once you do something exciting and adventuresome, there really is that adrenaline rush,” she smiled. In regards to the breadth of her different occupations, Nikki simply explained that “I would see something that was really awesome and I’d just pursue it.” That adrenaline rush has led Nikki to her present adventure: wildlife rehabilitation. With her background as an Operating Room RN, she is not the squeamish sort, and so is uniquely suited for the profession. “I don’t mind if the animals come in and they’re wounded. All of that is comfortable for me,” she said. “I am also very fortunate to be able to work with Wildlife Veterinarian Care, who help me diagnose and treat injured wildlife.” Her interest in rehab began in her youth, when her uncle found a kestrel falcon tangled in barbed wire and brought it home to her and her mother. Eager to help, the two went to the local library to find books on how to care for the injured animal. Inspired by their positive experience with the bird, Nikki and her mother proceeded to practice the sport of falconry for the next four years, learning how to trap birds of prey in the fall, train and hunt with them in the winter, and release them back into the wild in the spring. “Trapping and keeping a falcon during the winter months gives it a leg up in its hunting skills,” Nikki said. “If the hunt isn’t successful, the bird still eats and lives to try another day. Releasing the bird in the spring allows him to move on and live a natural life as a raptor. That is what we are always aiming for…a successful return to the wild.” There are many misconceptions surrounding raptors and the sport of falconry. Dating back almost 4,000 years, falconry, or hunting with birds of prey, fosters a symbiotic relationship between man and bird, the actions of each mutually benefiting the other. “Falconry is really about more than having a bird,” Nikki remarked. Instead, she asserted, the sport is about “being an engaged observer and going along with [the bird] while he’s doing what he was created to do — hunt,” noting that it requires both a state and federal permit to possess and hunt with birds of prey. It is important to understand that, although falconry focuses on hunting, raptors are not vicious animals. “Raptors are perceived as killers. The truth is that none of these animals hunt unless they’re hungry,” Nikki explained. In fact, despite the perceived dangers of birds of prey to humans and livestock, humans pose

more of a threat to the birds than the other way around; wild raptors have between a 70-90 percent mortality rate in their first year. “Even when you’re one of the top predators, you have a lot to be afraid of,” Nikki noted. “Pesticides, rodenticides, cars, cats, people, other birds of prey…there are a lot of things out there that can get a raptor.” When she left home, she put a hold on her practice of falconry. It was not until years later that Nikki, living in Fauquier and now certified in wildlife rehabilitation, returned to her work with birds of prey, serving with an organization known as the Native Wildlife Rescue group. “Nobody was helping raptors,” she related, explaining that “everyone had their own niche, which meant that hawks and owls were left out.” Nikki, however, was undaunted by the powerful creatures and became the raptor specialist in the group. When asked what makes her rehabilitation work worth the effort, Nikki smiled her response. “Getting to see something go free…my rehabilitation sponsor told me, ‘One day in the wild is worth 1,000 in a cage,’ and I believe that’s 100 percent true.” Concerned about all the misconceptions about raptors, Nikki began Bird in the Hand, an organization dedicated to educating the community about raptors and their purpose in the local environment.

“Each one of these animals has a beautiful niche in the ecosystem that absolutely has to be maintained or everything crumbles. You might not see it or understand it, but that doesn’t mean that it isn’t important,” Nikki insisted. With a two-fold mission of helping audiences understand the importance of raptors and inspiring the community to maintain and preserve the environment, her organization runs demonstrations for schools, libraries, small groups, picnics, corporate seminars, and community events. She said, “I realized halfway through my wildlife rehabilitation career that I could rehabilitate small mammals and birds for the rest of my life without actually affecting anyone but the individual animals. I really wanted a chance to affect people and cause them to love wildlife as much as I do. Bird

in the Hand is the perfect platform for that.” Nikki’s aspiration for the program? To get people excited about the world around them. “A heart captured and captivated by wildlife today may transform the world of tomorrow,” Nikki contended. With the help of the presentations offered by Bird in the Hand, her audiences can gain an appreciation for the majesty and mystery of the natural environment. “It’s very liberating,” Nikki argued, explaining, “You can live your whole life and everywhere you go you’ll find the fascination and the wonder of the natural world. And it’ll be a little bit different everywhere, which makes all of your life an adventure.” ❖ For more information about Bird in the Hand, please visit birdinthehand.net or on Facebook at Bird in the Hand Conservancy.

Come for the views, stay for the wine AT STONE TOWER WINERY STORY BY MARK LUNA PHOTOS BY DOUGLAS GRAHAM, WILD LIGHT PHOTOS
V
ery recently, I had the wonderful fortune to visit one of the most beautiful wineries I’ve ever seen, Stone Tower Winery, in Leesburg. Stone Tower Winery is a stunning 300-acre property, located on Hogback Mountain. The locals named the mountain Hogback after its silhouetted resemblance to the spiny ridge of a wild boar. The winery itself derives its name from two turrets situated on an ancient fortress in Belgium, where the father of co-owner Mike Huber (with wife Kristi) worked at a furniture factory as a young man. To this day, the Huber family is still in the furniture business, as they own the renowned Belfort Furniture. As for the Stone Tower land, Mike and Kristi purchased the 300 acres in the early 2000’s, from an original 1100 acres owned by Mike’s parents. To get things started, they brought in legendary Virginia ampelographer Lucy Morton who, after an extended period

of property and soil analysis, declared the land suitable for growing wine grapes. In 2009, the Huber’s planted 22 acres of vines, and Stone Tower Winery was born. Over the next few years, viognier and chardonnay would be planted, followed by the Bordeaux red varietals of cabernet sauvignon and franc, merlot and petit verdot. Their first release was in 2013, under the label Wild Boar. That label still exists today, but the true signature of the Stone

Tower wine line-up is its Estate collection, wines that are solely grown, produced and bottled on the property. The winemaking team is headed by Benoit Pineau, whose impressive resume includes head winemaker stints at Pollack Vineyards, in Greenwood, and First Colony Winery, in Madison. Other team members include enologist Preston
Thomas and vineyard manager Daniel Mumbauer. At its heart and soul, Stone Tower is a familyowned and operated winery, and its purpose is two-fold: to provide impeccable hospitality and world class Virginia wines. I believe that both ambitions are well met. Stone Tower’s wine emulation, at least with the red wine grapes, is Bordeaux; but, Bordeaux
is also equally revered for its white wine grape, sauvignon blanc. And with the pursuit of that tradition in the forefront, the Stone Tower Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2017 is a work of art. An electrifying wine, the Estate Sauvignon Blanc 2017 is light gold in color, and aromatic of citrus fruit, flowers and wet stone. Unlike many sauvignon blancs, this wine is fermented and aged for seven months in both new and neutral French oak barrels, as well as concrete vats. And as noted before, as with all their estate wines, this sauvignon blanc is grown, produced and bottled on the property. Next up is the Estate Chardonnay Library 2016. This is an excellent wine, produced in the spirit of the great central Burgundy (blanc) region, Cote Chalonnaise. Grown on a tiny 3.3-acre block, it’s also barrel fermented and French oak aged. There’s no malolactic fermentation used, meaning the acidity remains well intact, as with all great chardonnays, but there is definitely a roundness and textural integrity to the wine that gives it a beautiful mouthfeel of melon and honey tones. In short, the Estate Chardonnay Library 2016 is elegant and expressive.

Rounding out the triumvirate of estate white wines is the Estate Viognier 2017. For my tastes, I’ve always enjoyed viognier that lends itself to the Rhone inspirations of stone fruit aromas, honeysuckle and gingerbread. These wines are round, rich and flavorful, with good acidity and freshness to boot. Unfortunately, warm weather viognier can be tricky, and susceptible to the lateripening shortcomings of being oily, flabby and basically uninteresting. All that said, I think Stone Tower Estate Viognier 2017 gets it right. It’s barrel fermented, sees no malolactic fermentation and is aged in French oak barrels for 10 months. Aromas of jasmine and white flowers are explosive, and the mouthfeel is equally memorable. This is an excellent wine and a great complement to its white wine siblings. And now to the big boy

red wines we go, where Stone Tower really makes it presence known. Across their stunning 300-acre estate, Stone Tower is very fortunate to have all the key elements necessary to produce exceptional Bordeaux varietal red wines; elevation, sun and wind exposure, and high clay content. Paying respects to the Bordeaux’s right bank is the Estate Wind Swept Hill 2016 Red. A resplendent wine, this cabernet franc driven bottling is full of ripe red fruits, cedar and dried blueberry aromatics, as well as hints of red currant, lilac and forest floor. It has a wonderful herbaceous quality to it, and the supporting merlot rounds it out with a lovely mid-palate softness. There is structure as well, thanks to small, yet worthy amounts of cabernet sauvignon and petit verdot. The wine is aged for 20 months in French oak barrels, 50%
of them new, making for silky tannins and a well sustained finish. Not to be outdone is the fabulous Hogback Mountain 2016, Stone Tower’s signature wine. An absolute showcase for the property’s cabernet sauvignon, this left-bank inspired wine is powerful, majestic and refined. It’s complemented with merlot, cabernet franc and petit verdot, giving it silk, grace and depth. Hogback Mountain’s inaugural vintage was the 2013 bottling and it earned a rightful place in the Governor’s case for that year’s Governor’s Cup. Like the Wind Swept Hill bottle, Hogback Mountain 2016 is aged 20 months in barrel and can be rested for a solid decade, if you choose to wait that long to enjoy it. The wines and views at Stone Tower Winery offer a memorable encounter that every wine lover and scenery enthusiast will want to enjoy time and again. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖

THE PATIENT IS IN And the doctor is at the door BY HANNAH SAMLALL
I
n a situation that frustrates many physicians, Dr. William Simpson saw an opportunity. Dr. Simpson, a boardcertified internal medicine physician who grew up in Fairfax County, has been providing primary care services in Fauquier County since 1993. Over the years, he has watched the healthcare industry experience many changes, the most recent being those having to do with insurance. “Providers simply cannot dedicate adequate time to their patients under the current system,” Dr. Simpson said. “Insurance payments encourage short, concise visits.” He frequently had to address only the patient’s immediate needs and send them out the door with other questions unanswered. “I came to the conclusion that that’s not the ideal way to deliver medicine,” Dr. Simpson said. “It’s not fair to the patient, staff, provider, or family of the patient.” After years of experiencing these pain points in his profession, Dr. Simpson decided it was time to go old school, to leave his practice of 25 years in order to spend more quality time and offer better care to his patients. In the fall of 2018, Doc At Your Door was born. Doc At Your Door is a completely mobile physician service. There is no office. Dr. Simpson travels to see his patients in their homes, or wherever is convenient for them,

such as office, dorm room, hotel, assisted living facility — in other words, pretty much anywhere. He is able to provide a multitude of services including wellness, illness, and injury care, physicals, lab tests, vaccines, and much more. He is extremely passionate about making this a better solution to primary care for people throughout Fauquier and the surrounding counties. In the beginning, there were challenges, of course. Dr. Simpson has had to get used to carrying his equipment and supplies with him everywhere he goes, rather than having an office stocked with the necessities. Dr. Simpson's wife, Patty, operates her own geriatrics care management company in the region and has offered him invaluable insight into home-based medical care, from both a
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
nursing and a care management perspective. He has come to realize that there are so many added benefits to seeing people in their homes, where he is able to see people in the environment that they live in every single day. He can confirm the medications the patient is taking by actually looking at the bottles directly. If the patient is someone who was recently injured and has limitations, he is able to address things like accessibility of the home. “This is how healthcare was delivered back in the day,” Dr. Simpson said. And the growth of technology is making home physician visits a more viable form of care. “So much of what we do is portable,” Dr. Simpson said. “For instance, I can do EKGs through an app on my phone.” He is also able to offer Telehealth services, via video call, which is often very efficient. Dr. Simpson treats patients of all ages, backgrounds, and needs. “‘I’m not homebound so I guess I don’t qualify,’ is the biggest myth that I try to overcome,” Dr. Simpson said. “Most of my patients are not homebound, they just appreciate the convenience and privacy of home service.” Patient convenience is a major benefit of Doc At Your Door. Dr. Simpson has met with patients at their workplace, at the gym, and even at hotels for people who are away from access to their primary care physician. He said, “I’m available 24/7, so if people need to meet with me in the evenings, they don’t have to take time off of work.” Dr. Simpson prides himself on being able to offer this high-quality service to his patients. “It’s a great option for people who want convenience, privacy, and to avoid the chaos and the rush environment that can be typical of regular physicians offices.” It can be healthier, too, he explained. A physician’s office waiting room puts patients in contact with others with contagious conditions. “When I treated patients out of an office, I used to have people come in for a well visit and a few days later they were back because they had gotten sick.” While there are ups and downs to building any business, Dr. Simpson sees hardly any downsides to Doc At Your Door. “I used to be very limited in the time I could spend with patients, and now I don’t have to cut people off before we have addressed all their issues. It’s wonderful, “ Dr. Simpson said. “I really do hope the system will change over time, but right now I love having the time to dedicate to people and their needs.” You can learn more about Doc At Your Door and Dr. Simpson at docatyourdoor.care. ❖

The Mistress of Poplar Springs Casanova’s Jane Hall Cutler: literary prodigy, artist, and debutante, Part 1 BY JOHN TOLER
T
he village of Casanova has long been noted for its uniqueness. Among its historic treasures are Melrose Castle, built for Dr. James Murray in 1857; Weston, the eighteenth-century home of Giles Fitzhugh, now the property of the Warrenton Antiquarian Society; Grace Episcopal Church, founded in 1865; and nineteenth-century Rockhill Academy. In addition to the old families who lived in the area for generations before the Civil War, what became Casanova grew with the arrival of the families of railroad workers in the 1850s, and others attracted to the fertile land and rolling hills.

Like the village, some of those who lived there were also unique. One person intimately associated with Casanova in the twentieth century was Jane Hall Cutler (1915-1987), who along with her brother Dick Wick “Dickie” Hall Jr. spent much of their adolescence at Poplar Springs, ancestral home of their uncle, R. Randolph (d. 1951), an attorney, and aunt Rose Sutton Hicks (d. 1958).

Although she has been gone for 30 years now, Jane Cutler is fondly remembered as the mistress of Poplar Springs for her love of animals that resulted in the donation of 11.6 acres of her farm to the Fauquier SPCA for their fine shelter facility after her passing, and for the glamorous stories of her younger life in Hollywood and beyond, which she shared with friends, neighbors, and sometimes acquaintances. And by the way, those stories were true – as revealed in Such Mad Fun, subtitled Ambition and Glamour in Hollywood’s Golden Age, the biography written by her daughter, Robin R. Cutler, in 2016.
EARLY LIFE AND POPLAR SPRINGS
Jane and Dickie Hall hailed from Salome, a mining town in Arizona. Their parents were DeForest “Dick Wick” Hall (1877-1926) and Daysie Mae Sutton Hall (1882-1930). From the town he co-founded in the desert, Dick Wick Hall published the Salome Sun, a newsletter containing tall tales, anecdotes, and humorous stories. His work was soon noticed, and starting in 1922, he was a regular contributor to the Saturday Evening Post – earning him widespread recognition and the title, “Arizona’s Favorite Humorist.” Later, his writings were syndicated, and just before

his untimely death in 1926, he was hired as a screenwriter for Universal Studios in California. The next four years were tough. In 1927, Daysie and the children moved from Salome to Manhattan Beach, California, so her children could attend Redondo Union High School, one of the best public schools available. Before she was 15 years old, Jane had written poetry that

was published in the Los Angeles Times, as well as other articles and editorials, and was called “a literary prodigy who had inherited her father’s genius” in the press. Following Daysie’s death in May 1930 after a two-year struggle with breast cancer, her devastated children came east to live with Daysie’s sister Rose and Randy Hicks. Jane and Dickie travelled by ship from Los Angeles to New York, passing through the Panama Canal. The Hickses divided their time between an apartment in New York City, where Randolph worked, and his ancestral farm at Poplar Springs. The Hickses had built the 10,000-square-foot fieldstone manor house at Poplar Springs in 1928, “…just before the Depression decimated their savings,” according to Robin Cutler. “This new home,
modeled after those Rose had seen in England, was her modest version of Haddon Hall.” America was slipping deeper into the Great Depression, and although the Hickses were in better shape than most, it was a big strain to move to a larger apartment near the NightingaleBamford School for girls, where Jane would finish high school. Dickie matriculated at the University of Virginia, where he was a brilliant student and would ultimately earn a PhD in mathematics. Jane excelled at NightingaleBamford, serving as the assistant editor of the school literary magazine and editor of the yearbook. After graduating in 1932, Jane was admitted to the Women’s Art School of Cooper Union in New York. There she met different classes of people (which fascinated her), and studied freehand drawing,

Poplar Springs, built in 1928, as it appeared in 1932.
modeling in clay, elementary design, composition, and lettering. From June to October, Jane returned to Poplar Springs, where she made friends (which she called “the gang”) and enjoyed country life. “On evenings and weekends through these hot, humid summers, the gang swam at Daniel’s Mill and private pools; shared picnics and hayrides; drove to fairs, horse shows and steeplechase races; canoed on the Rappahannock River; and saw every film that was shown in Warrenton,” according to the account in Such Mad Fun. CHANGES COME
The year 1933 marked a “coming of age” for Jane Hall. As the Hickses were part of
New York society as well as prominent in Fauquier, Jane would have a formal debut in late December, along with Miss Margaret “Muggy” Gregory, one of her classmates at Nightingale. Worried about their depleted savings, by joining forces with the Gregorys, the Hickses could provide two tea dances – one at Poplar Springs preceded by a mock foxhunt, and the primary tea dance in New York – rather than one expensive dinner dance. In addition to being “presented to society,” her debut changed Jane’s focus for a while, as well as providing her with insights into the “glamour girls” that she encountered. This would serve her well as she commenced her professional career.
The debutante events at Poplar Springs were successful and memorable. The tea dance was held late Saturday afternoon in the great room at Poplar Springs, with mellow jazz provided by Warrenton’s own Chauncy Brown. Although Prohibition was still in effect, drinking lasted until the wee hours of the morning. Sunday was spent relaxing at Poplar Springs, and after supper, members of the debutante party headed to Calverton, where they boarded the overnight train to New York. The formal tea dance was held on Dec. 23, 1933, at The Pierre, attended by “385 elegantly dressed men and women,” according to Such Mad Fun. The Hickses returned to
Virginia later that evening, leaving the debutantes to party in the city with others their ages. The fun lasted until 6 a.m.; after the holidays, it was back to school – and reality. Young Jane Cutler’s talent as an artist flourished at Cooper Union, and returning to Poplar Springs in May 1934, she fell into “... a routine of writing, painting, and going out with her Virginia pals as much as possible.” In early July, Jane completed a fictional story entitled “Out a Year,” based on her experiences as a debutante, which she later submitted to a New York literary agency run by Elsie McKeogh. She also painted a large mural depicting the Casanova Hunt in front of the Poplar Springs manor house. ❖
Part 2 will describe Jane Hall’s growth as an artist, her rise in the literary and film industries, and the many famous people she met and worked with, and, years later, her return to Poplar Springs. Contact John Toler at jtoler4@gmail.com. | For more about Such Mad Fun, visit robincutler.com
