he genesis of the idea for this issue — home organization — came from my daughter when she returned from college in March, unfortunately not to return. Sarah is extremely organized and also has very minimalistic taste in interior design. Apparently, she saw some room for improvement at home. And, she was bored out of her mind with only a few online classes to complete and no job due to the pandemic. That combination resulted in a massive cleanout of our home office, reorganization of our bookshelves, and a purge and rearrangement of the kitchen after which I couldn’t find anything. She really wanted to color code our refrigerator, pantry, and the rest of our house, but I balked at spending hundreds of dollars at the Container Store, even after being shown multiple photos of her design ideals on her Pinterest board. One day, I was dismayed to find myself in my bedroom closet with her in charge and determined to sort out my life. But as we progressed, I was amazed at her patience and methods. I think she could make this into a career. She was part drill sergeant, (you can’t keep this if it doesn’t fit; try it on); part fashion consultant, (mom, this jacket has shoulder pads and is obviously from the ‘80s. You’re not keeping it); part logician, (you don't need to keep 25 tee-shirts for gardening, you don’t garden that much; have you seen our yard?); part therapist, (tell me all about this red dress from college that doesn’t fit you any more and you’re never going to wear again but won’t part with); and part smart-ass (well, you’re all set if you’re ever invited to an ugly sweater party).

Then, she put everything back all neatly and arranged in categories so choosing outfits would be easy. It was pretty greuling, but it was accomplished. My previous belief was that there were two things in this world that shouldn’t be done without beer: cleaning tack and painting (walls, not art). Cleaning out closets is now also on that list. But then we had an embarrassingly large pile of unwanted things. I wish I had taken a picture but I forgot. We had to sort that into three piles: trash, donate, or sell/consign (sub-sorted into summer and winter pieces). Trashing was easy, but donation locations/thrift stores and consignment shops were closed due to the pandemic. I noticed a lot of comments on social media from people who were also taking this opportunity to clean out. This gave me the idea to write an article about local options for all this stuff once everything opened again. These resources, along with Carly Corbin’s practical article with home organization techniques she uses in her professional organizing business The Evergreen Method, I hope will help you when you next decide to dive into similar projects. Next, my daughter tells me, is the garage. That’s an area I’m really daunted by, but, as she pointed out, most people who have a two-car garage are able to put two cars in it. Note to daughter: Ok, don’t push your luck. I’ve heard just about enough out of you, missy.

e’ve all seen the photos that professional organizers post on Instagram and Pinterest where every space is clean and uncluttered, the table tops and countertops are empty, and every single item is stored in its own designated spot. The pantries and refrigerators are all organized with stacked, matching containers, and even the kids’ rooms look like BY CARLY CORBIN havens of tranquility. The bonus is that not only does an organized home look good, it also functions well and is set up for successful maintenance: if everything has a spot and things are labeled, even kids won’t have an excuse to clutter. So how to accomplish such serenity for yourself? Realize that whatever system of organization you decide on, it needs to be personalized and set up specifically with your lifestyle in mind. We all have a daily flow and routine that is unique to us and our

THE ENTRYWAY Entryways can take on many different forms depending on the layout of your home, but whether it’s a mudroom or a small table by the front door, it is the main entry and exit of your home and an easy target for clutter. Make note of all the items that enter and leave your home and stay by the door (like mail, shoes, jackets, backpacks, etc.) and create solutions for each of those items. For instance, a row of hooks for jackets, a lower row for purses and backpacks, decorative floor baskets for shoes, and a mail sorter is usually all you need to keep things contained and clutter-free.
THE KITCHEN
family, the key is to set up systems that follow your own flow. Systems that work for your friends, or for the people on Pinterest, may not work well for your family at all. For instance, decanting dry goods, like flour and noodles, into beautiful canisters looks so polished and clean. However, filling up each jar after every trip to the store takes time and doesn’t necessarily fit into everyone’s lifestyle. Storing food groupings in their own containers, like labeled baskets or clear bins, can be just as beautiful and functional. Do what works for you. Start by taking a look at your home, and create a system for spots where the clutter happens naturally. Does mail pile up on the kitchen counter? Incorporate a mail sorter there or closeby. Do kids’ shoes get piled near the door? Add a floor basket for each family member to contain the chaos. Label the baskets to encourage everyone to maintain their own things. You can use decorative baskets in visible places, and plastic storage bins for locations that are not as visible. Using whatever containers you have on hand first is definitely very sensible, but, on the other hand, having the same style and color container used throughout makes everything look super tidy

and beautiful. So keep that in mind when envisioning your finished space, and create a home that works for you.
THE PROCESS No matter the room you are organizing, the process is going to remain the same: • Take everything out • Group everything into general categories (pantry example: baking, cooking, snacks, beverages, etc.) • Edit items (sort them to keep, donate, or toss) • Reset the space with your newly contained and labeled categories
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
The kitchen is where we spend so much of our time, and it can very easily become cluttered and disorganized as you try to stack pots, pans, glasses, and coffee mugs on top of each other. The key is to make the most out of each bit of space while keeping the things you use most often readily available. After all, you want your kitchen to be efficient enough to actually cook in. Add some shelf risers to make use of your cabinets’ vertical space when stacking variously sized dishes. Nesting pots, pans, and lids can make preparing meals a twisted game of Jenga; opt for some upright dividers to give each item its own place. Storing lids on over-the-cabinet door racks helps make great use of every available space. When tackling the pantry, take everything out and sort into categories (breakfast, snacks, beverages, cooking, baking, etc.), toss out anything expired, and consider donating goods that are not expired but you know you will not use. Unpack as many items from their packaging as you can (like taking individually wrapped granola bars out of their boxes) and organize all similar items, like snacks, together for grab-and-go simplicity. Put it all back in using turntables, bins, and baskets to help contain your categories, and don’t forget to add labels.
THE MASTER CLOSET This is a great time to take stock of all the items in your wardrobe. Does it fit? Do you like it? Have you worn it in the last year? If the answer is no, then strongly consider letting it go. Keep a separate laundry basket in your closet for donation items that turn up — then they won’t end up back in the rotation and take up valuable closet space.

Almost every closet I’ve walked into has a mix of several different style hangers (wire, plastic, wood, old dry cleaning hangers). One way to make a big impact in your closet fast is by using one style hanger for everything. I love the slim, velvet hangers and use them in almost every organizing project. Their thin design means more hanging space for all your clothing, and with the velvety covering your blouses won’t be constantly slipping to the floor. Create order fast by grouping similar items together. All dresses together, tops, bottoms, accessories. Then take it a step further by grouping items within each category by length (short sleeve/long sleeve, shorts/ skirts/pants, maxi/mini dresses). Finally, give one last sort by color for that professional touch. The same sorting approach can be taken with shoes and jewelry.
WEEKLY MAINTENANCE
BEAUTY SUPPLIES It’s no wonder that spaces where we use skincare products, makeup, and hair accessories become disaster zones — we tend to collect them in excess. But using our guideline of organizing (pull everything out, group into categories, edit, then reassemble the newly grouped items back into the space) will create quick calm out of the chaos. When it comes to skincare and makeup that is used daily, it is okay to keep them on the bathroom counter or drawer (each in their own labeled bins of course!) but items not used daily can be stored in their own labeled containers under the sink or in your linen closet. Beauty products have a shelf life, you’re going to want to be ruthless about tossing out old products. When they are old and expired they won’t work as effectively and can also carry bacteria (yikes!), and this is a great time to sort them out.

THE LAUNDRY ROOM Because laundry rooms often hold household cleaning supplies as well, it is even more important to have a containment system set up here. (Ever reach for one bottle of cleaner and knock over dozens of bottles instead?) Pull everything out and sort into categories (like detergents, spot treatments, and types of household cleaners) and toss anything expired or empty. When you are reassembling the room, open plastic bins with handles are great to contain each category of items. Just add a label to make finding and returning items a breeze for everyone. A game-changer product I’ve brought to many projects is a four-section laundry hamper. Sort your lights, darks, delicates, and dry cleaning instantly. They also come on wheels, making moving from bedroom to laundry room effortless.
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

Getting in the habit of putting things in their correct spot immediately is always best, but sometimes the fast pace of daily life prevents that from always happening. Incorporating an “action” bin or basket can be a sanity saver by holding all the items that need taking care of in one spot. Label a basket for each family member, and pick a day that everyone empties and puts away their own things.
MONTHLY MAINTENANCE The secret to maintaining your organized spaces year-round is by looking ahead to any upcoming holidays, events, and seasons. If your child has a birthday next month, now would be a great time to take stock of their clothing and toys they’ve outgrown to make room for the new things that will be coming in. Small tasks done every day will help keep your space looking tidy, but when you also look ahead to what is coming you prevent the tasks from piling up and becoming overwhelming. ❖

First of all, can you sell it?
Consignment Options
Now What? ...The Aftermath A local guide to deciding what to do with the inevitable pile of unneeded items that has amassed from a good clean-out binge.
BY PAM KAMPHUIS
S
o, you’ve done it. You’ve organized your kitchen and purged your closet, and in the process probably came across quite a lot of things you don’t want or need. All these things are probably in a large pile now and need to leave your house — somehow. But how do you decide what to do with everything? You may think of trying to sell some of it, maybe donate some, or even give up and throw everything away. It can be a very daunting job, and it’s easy to get overwhelmed. Take a deep breath and consider your local options for taking care of it all.

There are an almost unlimited number of ways to sell items that you don’t need but are still worth something, including selling them yourself locally or online — on eBay, for example. Those can be very good options, but it involves a lot of hassle — and sometimes fraud, or, in the case of selling locally, potential personal risk. Consigning locally can be a simpler and easier experience. First of all, what if it’s potentially valuable or antique? “First of all,” advised Tom Benjamin of Fox Den Antiques in Warrenton, “is to not throw anything away.” Especially if you’re going through items that have been passed down from previous generations, don’t automatically assume that they’re junk. “Especially the smaller items, people tend to throw those away first, but they can sometimes be more valuable than bigger things like furniture.” There can be hidden gems within piles or boxes of older documents; for instance, magazines, baseball cards, and newspapers. Also, don’t discount vintage items that are not antique; items from the 1950s, 60s, and 70s can be very collectible even if they are not aesthetically pleasing to our modern tastes. The best way, of course, to determine if something’s worth anything, is to hire an appraiser. However, they can be expensive. If that’s not possible, or you don’t think the item is worth enough to justify the expense, you can always research it online yourself. This will take some
time, but may be worth it in the end. Benjamin recommends simply starting out on eBay looking at the value of similar items. The key, however, is not to look at the asking price for an item (the sellers can ask any price, even if it’s not accurate), but search the sold listings to see how much similar items actually sold for. After all, something is only worth what buyers are willing to pay. Then find a trusted, local antique or vintage shop to help you get your item in front of customers’ eyes.
FOX DEN ANTIQUES
355 Shirley Avenue, Warrenton 540-347-1162 foxdenantiques.com What about good, quality, currently in style clothing that you just don’t want? Of course there is Poshmark, but boutique consigning locally can also be a good option. “It’s a fantastic idea all the way around, for many reasons,” says Sandra Packwood, owner of Do You Dejavu in Warrenton. “It’s environmentally friendly, and everything gets recycled. You can consign items to make a little money, or shop and get great deals on clothing at fantastic prices.” Every consignment store has a different way of doing business, she explains, so do your research. Look for a shop where your items will be showcased to the right market demographic. The condition of the item is crucial; it must be clean, functioning, and odor-free. The more presentable your item is, the more likely it will sell, she recommends.

marked, worn, badly scratched or just plain junky they can’t use. The freestores may take some items that the thrift stores won’t, since they go directly to the people who need them at no charge. For instance, the shops won’t take a scratched but still serviceable table, but the freestores may. The shops won’t take older, out of style winter coats, but the freestores might, for those who need them. THRIFT STORES
SALVATION ARMY FAMILY THRIFT STORE
62 Waterloo St., Warrenton Consignments are usually handled by appointment and the shops will only accept seasonal items, so clean out early and plan ahead: you won’t be able to consign a winter coat in May, advises Packwood. Consignment stores handle a large volume of items with a high turnover, so keep an eye on your dates. Check the store’s policies ahead of time; some won’t accept off label brand clothing (Walmart, Old Navy, etc.). Some will not accept items over a certain age, or may have an item maximum (so plan ahead, you won’t be able to unload the contents of your closet in one appointment.)

Donation Options There are two types of organizations that accept donations: nonprofit thrift stores, where your donations are sold in their shop and the proceeds used for charitable purposes, and freestores, where the items you donate go directly to people who need them. Most donations are tax deductible. Therefore, the types of things they need differ. The shops need saleable items, so anything torn,

osanna Funiciello Smith likes to tell stories—about the vintage and recycled items in her shop, Marshall Curated, and about the special pieces she uses to add style and ambiance to weddings and events through her company Bella Villa Antiques and Vintage Rentals. Every vintage piece is special to her, and she feels a responsibility for each one, both its past and its future. “I feel like I’m an ambassador for these pieces in that I help to convey their story. It’s like folklore. And then I help to give the pieces a new purpose.” Envisioning what the items could be used for today is key to Rosanna’s rental business, which is anything but typical party rentals. She creates lounge areas, bars and drink stations, seating chart displays and more out of a wide variety of reclaimed furnishings and accessories. She has turned a galvanized turkey feeder into an ice bucket, an old factory cart into an elegant beverage station, a piece of an old column into a cake stand, and a Venetian armoire into a memory board. Her creativity and style have enhanced many celebrations,

“I love combining a glamorous Italian chandelier with our industrial factory cart, or the kitschy gold champagne fountain with iron plant stands to create a rustic and elegant atmosphere. For the al fresco scene from my very first shoot, we used a fancy filigree table covered with old fence boards. The rustic elegance suits my personality as well as today’s ideal Virginia party... appeared in a four-page spread in Weddings Unveiled magazine. Rosanna was hooked. A few months later, the General Manager of the Red Fox Inn, Matilda Reuter, came into the shop looking for something to use at her wedding. “She’s very detail-oriented, and she knows what she likes,” said Rosanna. “The day of the wedding comes, and she says to me, ‘All right, Rosanna, you do your thing.’” “I wasn’t expecting that level of autonomy. I arranged the lounges and the candles and everything. That wedding—the first one I ever did and with very little guidance—got published in Southern Living Weddings, and I thought, wow, maybe I’m good at this.”

and the vignettes she fashions have been featured in Martha Stewart Real Weddings, The Knot, and Virginia Bride Magazine. It’s hard to believe when talking to Rosanna that antiques haven’t always been her passion. A native of California, she came to Northern Virginia after she married her husband and moved into the 800 square foot farmhouse where he grew up in Gainesville. “He would tell me stories about all these pieces around the farm, and I was fascinated,” she said. Rosanna became so fascinated that in 2007 she left her job at PricewaterhouseCoopers and opened Bella Villa Antique Shop in Aldie. “I would look at what the vendors I rented space to were selling and buy what I liked. I’d squirrel them away in the barn because I had stuffed our little house. Over time, this is what you see,” she said, gesturing to the items in the large storage space above Marshall Curated. Her penchant for squirreling away items that she loves soon sprouted the rental business. “Photographers would come into the shop looking for items to use in photo shoots,” Rosanna said. She worked closely with one of those photographers to arrange an outdoor dining scene with a chandelier hanging from a low tree branch. The photos

As the rental business grew, Rosanna found herself pulled in different directions, like a squirrel climbing every tree in the woods. She was running the shop and the rental business, providing venue styling and consulting services, doing photo shoots, and serving on the “Re-imagining a new Visit Loudoun and Aldie Heritage purposeful life for discarded Association boards. She wanted the antiques brings me joy, flexibility to spend time with her especially when there are family in California, so she decided to layers of meaning and stories, such as this Italian close the retail shop in Aldie and focus “matrimonial” bed converted on the rentals. into a bar, the architectural She moved her cache of rental column raising the cake as furnishings to the space above Robin’s a pedestal, or the iron urn Nest Antiques and Collectibles being used for a champagne bucket. With 100+ vintage in Marshall and operated by chairs and sofas, lounge appointment only. “Finding that much styling options abound!” square footage at an affordable rate is no easy task in a town,” Rosanna said of the move to Marshall. Then in the summer of 2019, the owner of Robin’s Nest told her she was going to sell the building. Having devoted herself full time to developing the rental business for two and a half years, Rosanna was ready to make a commitment to another retail store. She and her husband Kevin purchased the building, and in January 2020 opened Marshall Curated. “I get a lot of satisfaction from recreating a space,” Rosanna said about the changes she’s made at Marshall Curated. “The shop was much more crowded before. We made it so you can see all the way to the back, and vendors have booths on either side.” The vendors provide a variety of home décor styles for shoppers to choose from. Rosanna describes her own style as European farmhouse. “I’m a mix of old and new. I have 100% Italian heritage, but I’m 100% American raised, and I embody that in my style,” she said. She favors curvy chandeliers, Florentine gold wall sconces, and ceramic urns reminiscent of an Italian Palazzo, but also rustic benches, reclaimed wood, and crates. Within the shop, Rosanna shows the same ingenuity she uses when creating vignettes for the rental business. On one of the back walls of the shop, she created what she called her “Ralph Lauren department.” She hung two sections of old picket fencing on the wall for a rustic effect. She also took a large wooden piece of furniture that was used for cutting and storing pieces of glass back when the property was Marshall Hardware, and repurposed it by turning it on its side. The vertical openings once used for storing glass now serve as shelves behind the store’s counter, adding a new chapter to the cabinet’s history and giving Rosanna a great story to tell. ❖ ROSANNA SMITH

Barking Rose Brewing Co. + Farm
Mark and Ashley Rose with children Charlie and Lance on the porch of the brewing company
Warrenton’s family-grown, family-run, and family-friendly brewery BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
Matt and Ashley Rose, owners of Barking Rose Brewing Co. + Farm in Warrenton, aren’t new to the brewery scene. Matt opened Forge Brew Works in Lorton — the first production brewery to exist in Fairfax County — in 2012 after deciding that he was “done with office work” as an Aerospace Engineer for a consulting firm. At that time, Virginia had recently passed legislation that
24

allowed breweries to open on-site taprooms, whereas previously all beer had to be sold through a distributor. This law made smaller taprooms feasible, says Matt. But after the two married and moved to Warrenton, the commute to Lorton wasn’t contributing to their quality of life. So when the lease was up, Matt and Ashley found land here, built a barn, and transformed their

business to Barking Rose. The name change was made to more accurately represent their farm location and philosophy. Combining Ashley’s maiden name, Barker, with their family name, Rose, gave the brewery its unique new identity. Ashley (whose titles include Co-Op Manager and Cat Herding Expert) and Matt (Brewmaster and Chief Farmhand) held their grand opening for Barking Rose Brewing Co. + Farm in October of 2019. The farm brewery sits on 11 acres of land where fruits, spices, and hops will be grown and used in their beer-making process. ‘An endless Spring Saturday’ is what Ashley and Matt want visitors to feel when they visit. Their desire was to make the farm brewery a place where people like to just hang out, have a beer, watch a game, sit on the porch, have a picnic, or enjoy food truck food — “relaxed, friendly, open, and happy.” The big red building is “country” on the outside and “industrial farmhouse” on the inside. The ceiling beams, metal chairs, and huge shiny brew tanks contrast with the beautiful red rose logo that welcomes visitors to the brewery. When it comes to the brews that are offered at Barking Rose, Matt says it really depends on what inspires him to create a new offering. “I normally will take a look at the board and think to myself ‘is there anything I want to drink that I don't have available on the board?’ and work from there.” While he leans mainly toward Belgian ales and German lagers, he tries to ensure there are at least one or two hoppy beers, one or two easy drinkers, and various seasonal styles. “My summer beers tend to be lighter and crisper; winter more hearty. I brew beers like pumpkin beers, oktoberfests, maibocks, and dopplebocks in their traditional season, but I also brew a number of new brews every year to make sure I am growing and experimenting as a brewer.” The brews at Barking Rose often will have a personal connection to the Rose

family. Nana’s Stout and Nana’s Morning Cup, the latter brewed with coffee beans from Vint Hill Roasters, are named for Ashley's Nana and brewed in honor of her. By Any Other Name, a beer brewed for Matt and Ashley’s wedding, is a Belgian Strong Ale with peaches and strawberries. There is a yet-to-be-named Imperial Witbier for son Charlie, and Daywalker, a Belgian Tripel named after son Lance that has a different red fruit in it every year. Future beers will include sours, more farmhouse style saisons, and more beers using flavors with what they are growing at the farm. When the pandemic hit our area, Barking Rose immediately closed its doors for on-premise service and switched to curbside, but since things have slowly opened up, outdoor seating is available for the community to enjoy brews safely. Visitors are also encouraged to bring their own food and non-alcoholic beverages, or enjoy the food trucks, which rotate on the weekends. When normality returns, says Matt, there will be many activities to enjoy at Barking Rose, including Wednesday evening trivia, discounted growler Thursdays, music on Fridays, food trucks on Saturday and Sunday, and yoga on Sunday. The second Sunday of every month, the brewery hosts a board game day, a collaboration with The Game Store. There are also plans for cornhole tournaments, more outdoor seating, drive in movie nights, and more. The couple is open to more possibilities with their charming 11 acres to provide a place for relaxation and fun. ❖

Deepening Understanding of Fauquier County History The John K. Gott Library houses historical maps, artifacts, documents, and photos for the study of local history and genealogical research. BY GARY CARROLL
F
auquier County’s premiere repository for genealogical and historical research, The Gott Library is a hidden gem for those seeking to learn more about county history or the stories of families of who have lived here. The small, unpretentious building that houses the library, located in Marshall near the intersection of Routes 17 and 55, is easy to miss but a pleasant surprise to find. When built in 1771, the building was the
Top left: Charles Ashby, the last “King of the Free State” Top right: The historical maps available at the library provide a wealth of information to researchers. Bottom left: Researchers study in the welcoming main room of the library. The building originally served as the former Old Salem Meeting House, Marshall’s oldest building, first constructed in 1771 as the meeting house of the Upper Carter’s Run Baptist Church. It has served many purposes since then. Above: John K. Gott, a native of Marshall, was the founder of the Fauquier Heritage Society (now the Fauquier Heritage and Preservation Foundation). Having done extensive research on the Marshall area, he authored several books on the subject of local history and was the foremost recognized historian in Fauquier County during his lifetime.
meeting place for the Upper Carter Run Baptist church, and a visitor can still find some of the original structure inside. It is reportedly the oldest building standing in Marshall. Entering the library, I was welcomed by volunteers Ava Lee and Laura Kelsey, who were eager to show me how they strive to carry out their mission of “providing the public as much local historical and genealogical information as possible.” Ava also serves as vice president of the board of directors for the library’s parent organization, the Fauquier Heritage and Preservation Foundation, and Laura, also a board member and the current president of the board of the Fauquier Historical Society, is an experienced genealogical researcher. Sitting in the largest room filled with tables where researchers can spread out their books and documents to study, I found myself surrounded by numerous shelves holding some 5,000 items. Above the shelves were photos and prints of individuals, many quite renowned, who came from the Fauquier area or had an impact on its history. I also could see many of the maps that comprise the library’s extensive historical map collection. Looking closely at one of the maps, I was fascinated to discover what the area near my current rural home near Old Waterloo Road looked like in the 18th century. The library is named for John Gott, a Marshall native, former librarian, and during his lifetime, Fauquier County’s premiere historian. He stockpiled and organized books, public records, and private family history information that ultimately included some 3,500 items when the Fauquier Heritage and Preservation foundation took trusteeship in 2003. I was told that the library is organized today just as Gott had originally implemented it. Visitors to the library generally come for two

reasons — to research their family history, or to deepen their understanding of local history and the evolution of the county. The family files are stored together in their own special section of the library and offer visitors who believe they have family history in the area the opportunity to see what public information is available on their ancestors as well as private information provided by descendants and relatives. Residents of other states who have ancestors from Fauquier often call on the library as they trace their family trees. I also easily found a great deal of material on my wife’s extended family ancestors, the Beverlys, some of whom had moved from the Tidewater to this area in the 18th century. county, you are likely to find material that will give you greater insight. Next door to the library you will find a house built in 1934, where a partner of the library, the Sinclair Education Center, is located. The Center provides a comfortable multi-room setting to small groups for study and research and sometimes hosts history lectures. The Foundation also sponsors presentations, called “History Happy Hour” at the Fauquier County Courthouse quarterly on a Sunday afternoon. To enhance its capability to serve those with genealogical questions, the library is creating an online capability — its unique version of ancestory.com. The library depends on volunteers and donations to continue its work. It is located at 4110 Winchester Road in Marshall. You can find additional information and hours on their website at www.fhpf.org. Special appointments are also available. ❖ Photos by Laura Kelsey
