have lived in Warrenton for 30 years, but perhaps didn’t appreciate it fully until I had children. What a great place to raise a family! And the holiday season is when Warrenton really and truly shines. The town has received awards for its holiday celebrations, and it’s all due to the wonderful community we live in and generous sponsors and volunteers who donate their time and talent to pull off Warrenton’s magical holiday season. We’re including a behind-the-scenes peek in this issue! Our Art Director Kara and I spent a few special hours with Sherrie Carter from Sherrie’s Stuff, putting together a tutorial for a mixed-media collage ornament of the iconic Warrenton Courthouse (included in this issue). What really shines through with Sherrie, aside from her artistic talent, is her outlook on life which can be ideal during the holiday season when we all get so stressed out and rushed. She says, “There’s no right or wrong, there are no mistakes. If you do something that doesn’t have the result you want, you just keep adding layers and make something else out of what you’ve got.” It’s a good reminder for the Christmas season; things don’t have to be perfect, and everything can always be fixed. And if the final product has a little bit of whimsy, so much the better. Remember that when trying to create the “perfect” Christmas for your family and friends. And if all else fails, add a little glitter and an extra coat of mod podge! I’d just like to add a personal plea on a subject that is close to my heart. Every year in the months after Christmas, animal shelters are inundated with puppies and dogs that were given as gifts that turned out to be more work than the owners could handle. Think carefully about that Christmas puppy you may be considering, and please be sure your family is ready for a dog and all that comes with it before you decide to give a dog as a gift! Charlotte Wagner’s article in this issue can help you decide. And speaking of pets...don’t forget to vote in our Cutest Pet Contest! Pet owners have been submitting photos of their pets during the month of November (and there are a lot of cute ones!), and voting will take place online December 10-21 at www.insidenova.com/ contests. The winner, by popular vote, will receive a professional photo shoot for their pet and a spot on the cover of our February 2019 Pet Issue. Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays!

Beyond A Christmas Carol; Non-traditional holiday reads BY JENNIFER SCHULTZ ANGOLI, COLLECTION SERVICES DEVELOPMENT LIBRARIAN
A
lthough the holiday season can be a time of high-stress and activity, it’s also an ideal time to get lost in a great read. Sure, you can’t go wrong with reading or rereading A Christmas Carol, but if you want something less traditional, there is a wealth of options – both old and new – to choose from. Here are a few to consider for your holiday reading.
read, then you have an embarrassment of riches from which to choose. “‘Christmas won’t be Christmas without any presents,’ grumbled Jo, lying on the rug” is one of the most famous opening lines in American literature. 2018 is the 150th anniversary of the publication of Little Women – making it the perfect time to rediscover Louisa May Alcott’s classic. Although Ramona and Her Father isn’t the first children’s book people think of when they think “Christmas classic,” this heartwarming and

witty 1978 Newbery Honor book by Beverly Cleary remains a relevant look at a family dealing with a parent’s unemployment during the holidays. Too Many Tamales by Gary Soto is a gorgeous reminder to not forgo picture books once a child can read independently, as he/she might miss out on some outstanding picture book stories for the elementary school set. Maria must face the consequences of wearing her mother’s ring without permission when it gets lost while making tamales; will it ruin the family’s Christmas dinner? This is a joyous and very relatable story that imparts a message without being overly obvious about it. Fancy a Christmas on the Cornish coast? Pick up Christmas at Little Beach Street Bakery, the third in Jenny Colgan’s Little Beach Street Bakery series. When a storm cuts off Mount Polbearne from the mainland, villagers must bond together to make Christmas cheer for everyone. Oliver is homeless, scared, and shy of strangers after a fire destroys the pub in which he lived. Patient human kindness goes a long way, until he meets a little girl—and village—that need a very special Christmas. Oliver the Cat Who Saved Christmas by Sheila Norton is ideal for those who want a heartfelt story that might make them shed a tear or two. The Christmas Coat: Memories of My Sioux Childhood by Virginia Driving Hawk Sneve is one of my favorite Christmas stories. Based on the author’s childhood recollections growing up as the daughter of an

Episcopal priest and never being able to pick first from the donation boxes sent to the Rosebud Reservation, this is a meaningful and memorable tale about community, selflessness, and unexpected rewards. Although the community is obviously impoverished, it is not a focal point; rather, the emphasis is on family/tribal pride and togetherness.
Christmas Weepers
You’ll want to have a box of tissues handy if you choose one of these Christmas titles. For a dash of realism in your Christmas stories, don’t miss Christmas Bells by Jennifer Chiaverini. Alternating between a grieving Henry Wadsworth Longfellow as he writes a Christmas poem and a music teacher preparing her students for a Christmas concert while facing budget cuts, this is an engaging story of faith, hope and the power of community. Although A Tree Grows in Brooklyn is not a Christmas story, Betty Smith’s depiction of pre-World War I Christmas traditions in a working-class Brooklyn neighborhood will definitely be seared in your memory (as will her depictions of turn of the century Halloween and Election Day festivities). If you’re an ardent fan of L.M. Montgomery’s Anne of Green Gables series, you undoubtedly have favorite scenes featuring the irrepressible redhead. Anne’s joy when she receives a dress with “puffed sleeves” for Christmas is likely one of the top scenes from the first novel. Silver Packages is another outstanding picture book to share with elementary school students. A young boy fervently hopes to catch a doctor’s kit when the Christmas train runs through his Appalachian community, but each year brings a different gift. Based on author Cynthia Rylant’s childhood experiences, this is an emotional and eye-opening story with a joyful “circle of life” feel that will give you goosebumps.
Have you ever sobbed over a children’s picture book? You just might if you read Susan Wojciechowki’s The Christmas Miracle of Jonathan Toomey. No one can match Jonathan Toomey’s woodcarvings, but his gruff mannerisms are offputting to the other villagers. When a widow and her young son ask him to carve figurines of the Holy Family for their crèche, they unexpectedly assist him in his devastating grief. The illustrations breathtaking and the story is sensitively told without becoming maudlin.
Christmas Romance
Want some escapism and happy endings in your Christmas reading? These stories will set your heart a-fluttering. Bruce W. Cameron continues his line of wildly popular dog stories (A Dog’s Purpose) with Dogs of Christmas. Josh is not prepared when a dog and her puppies shows up in his life, much less when he falls for the adoption coordinator helping him to get the dogs ready for their new home. Will Josh be able to part with the dogs when it’s time for adoption? This sweet story is perfect for dog lovers and romance readers alike. How about some binge reading (and time traveling) this Christmas? Check out The Christmas Brides Collection and The Victorian Christmas Brides Collection, both published by Barbour Books, one of the leading Christian fiction publishers. They are perfect for those who prefer sweetness over sensuality in their romances. If you’d prefer to stay in this century, pick up Christmas Camp by Karen Schaler. Haley Hanson is rising fast in her advertising career and ready to snatch a prestigious Christmas toy company’s account to further her aspirations. Although she’s not keen on her boss sending her to a Christmas Camp, she learns the benefit of rediscovering Christmas, as well as meeting the dashing son of the
camp’s owner. Finally, if you want to dive into a slew of Christmas novels, you can’t go wrong with the ruler of Christmas romance, Debbie Macomber. Her latest, Alaskan Holiday, is already a New York Times bestseller.
Mysterious Christmas
Craving a whodunit this holiday season? Joanne Fluke’s Christmas Cake Murder is the latest in her long-running Hannah Swensen series; Hannah’s dream of becoming the top baker in town is complicated when she becomes entangled in a customer’s murder mystery story that suddenly becomes all too real. Vicki Delany’s Year-Round Christmas series features Merry Wilkinson, the owner of a sweet little Christmas shop. In Rest Ye Murdered Gentleman, Merry’s best friend is suspected of a murder (by poisoned gingerbread cookie) and she must spring into action before it’s too late. Why not relax with a fat book of Christmas crime stories, penned by some of the genre’s greats? The Big Book of Christmas Mysteries, edited by Otto Penzler, is crammed with mysteries that even the most discerning mystery reader will approve of. Isis Crawford’s Mystery With Recipes series is delicious reading for armchair sleuths any time of the year, but fans will definitely devour A Catered Christmas Cookie Exchange featuring a very competitive Christmas cookie competition that unexpectedly turns deadly. Finally, don’t miss the monarch of Christmas mysteries, Anne Perry; her latest Christmas murder, A Christmas Revelation, is eagerly awaited by her many fans. These and many more traditional and non-traditional reads can be found at your local Fauquier County Public Library. Browse the catalog or stop by the reference desk for suggestions.❖

ifestyles is delighted to feature this excerpt from Lily Barlow, the Mystery of Jane Dough, by Carla Vergot, Haymarket resident and longtime writer for our sister publication, The Piedmont Virginian. At Lifestyles, we have long appreciated Carla’s writing, which revolves around her garden as it helps her through life’s ups and downs in stories related with a dry humor and sometimes heartbreaking honesty. Lily Barlow, the Mystery of Jane Dough is part romance, part mystery, and totally entertaining. It’s set in Marshall, Virginia, and stars Lily Barlow, a UVA co-ed who comes back home begrudgingly to deal with her family’s struggling bakery, her best friend Jack (who suddenly wants to be more than friends), a quirky landlord, and some aggressive chickens, all while trying to solve a mystery of an unidentified murder victim. We couldn’t put it down, and you won’t be able to either. It’s a great read and the perfect holiday gift.

I watched Miss Crazy start the arduous process of old bones standing up. “I have just what you’re lookin’ for, honey. It’s a fully furnished guest suite. Small kitchen, bath. You’ll be in your place, and I’ll be in mine. There will be no reason whatsoever for us to bother each other.” Was I mistaken, or was the implication that I shouldn’t bother her? “How much are you asking?” Because at this moment, it all came down to cash money. “And will you accept a week-to-week commitment?” Nothing says I’m-not-moving-home like a short-term lease. “Don’t you want a look-see first?” I shook my head no. “If the door locks, it’ll be fine, but my budget is kinda tight right now. I may not be able to afford it.” “You can afford it, honey child,” she assured me. “I want a person on the property more than money in the bank, as long as it’s the right person. You’re the sixteenth applicant in eight months and the only one I’ve bothered to interview.” Smiling at what constituted an interview, my gaze landed on a pair of muddy men’s work boots, size huge, sitting on the top step of the porch. Hmmm. Did Miss Crazy Pants have a man around despite what she said? Unless the aforementioned murderous intentions of her human heart put an end to that poor bastard. Was he living on the property or buried under it? Following my gaze, she offered an explanation, “Best home security system on the market. Four dollars at the thrift store. Mud not included.” I nodded my appreciation. I liked this ol’ gal more and more...a little bit of moxie wrapped in a floral print tied with an apron string. “I’ll take it.” “Woman who knows her mind. Good. Get yourself settled back in town, and we’ll come to a monetary arrangement. For now, feed the chickens and pet my dog when he comes around.” Chickens? Mentally calculating how close I had to be to a chicken in order to feed a chicken, I noticed for the first time a lazy, mostly-black mutt lying under a shrub, guarding her collection of trowels. He honored me with one thump of his dusty tail before drifting back to sleep. “Name’s Cro. Short for Velcro. Wandered into the barn five years ago, thin as a number two pencil. Hasn’t left my side since. He’s good company, and he don’t like many people, so the fact he hasn’t barked you up is your stamp of approval. Now come on.” Out of the corner of my eye, I saw she was already halfway to the front porch. Quick for old. I took a few giant steps to catch up. At the door she said, “Wipe your feet. Not just this time. Every time.” The clatter of scissors and screw drivers being pushed around a junk drawer drew my attention. She rummaged with gusto and eventually fished out a key on a plastic key ring shaped like a starfish. Whatever it advertised had long since rubbed off, so just a translucent orange starfish at this point. Out the back door, we cut across the mowed lawn to a free-standing garage that matched the house. “These steps get slick in the rain.” The exposed wooden staircase climbed diagonally up the outside of the garage to a small deck with two weathered Adirondack chairs and a low table between. Crossing the threshold, it became clear I would be renting my own little piece of the 1970s. Nothing too fragile or frilly. It was, however, heavy on the avocado section of the color wheel. “I don’t care who you bring up here, but Cro might. The password for the internet is on the fridge. There’ll be no cookin’ meth. Any questions?” The devil in me wanted to ask where in the hell I was supposed to cook my meth, but I stuck to my actual questions. “Two,” I said. “What should I call you? And where’s the chicken feed?” “I’m Miss Delphine Walker, and the scratch is down in the garage. One scoop each mornin’. Throw it on the ground back by the coop.” Without so much as a handshake, I had my apartment. Cleaner and more comfortable than I could have hoped.

She says, “I came from that ‘It Takes a Village’ kind of mentality where everybody knew you.” When she considered all of the areas in which she and her family could live, she picked Warrenton because she wanted her two children not to get lost in the huge school systems so prevalent in other counties. With a father and grandmother who were both real estate professionals, she always knew it was only a matter of when, not if, she would follow in their footsteps. She took a little while to enter the business, working as the first female aircraft mechanic at the Air National Guard in Martinsburg, WV, before eventually switching to active duty in the U.S. Air Force. Today, however, she is one of the premier real estate agents in the region. In 2017, her sales volume exceeded $20 million. The delay in becoming an agent was strategic. Following the advice of her father, she wanted to enter the business during a downturn. He told her, “If you go into a market that is suffering, you’ll learn more as well as be better to and for your clients. You’ll see the good and the bad of real estate, and you’ll see that what you can do for those clients will be much more than selling houses.” In 2007, she felt the market shift downward, and she knew it was time to launch. She consulted with her family to make sure they were ready, letting them know, “I’m going to have to take calls at 10 o’clock at night. I may be at your soccer game, but I might miss a goal because I’m answering a call. I may come home late and I may have dinner late. I may have to adjust schedules according to my clients, but that’s the only way I can make this my career.” Her first transaction was a short sale, followed by many more in the harrowing years of the housing crisis. With the help of EnTitle Settlement Services CEO Helen Cornwell, Dawn learned to negotiate with banks and contact representatives. When necessary, she would call the Governor’s office on behalf of scared clients who were facing foreclosure. She admits, “those were the hardest three years of my career and I’m glad they came at the beginning because it made it more of a people business

n her first day as a Fauquier resident in 2002, Dawn Arruda needed to mail a package. As soon as she walked into the post office, the postmaster asked if she was new to Warrenton. That caught her off guard, but the biggest surprise came when she was 12 cents short. Without missing a beat, the postmaster pulled 12 cents out of his pocket and told her he trusted her to pay it back. Dawn immediately knew Warrenton was her kind of town. She indeed returned the change and has been giving back to the community ever since. Dawn chose Warrenton because she wanted to live in a community that had the same advantages she enjoyed growing up in a Hagerstown, MD.

than just a business of selling houses. It made me realize that every person who sells a house has a need. It may be a sick mother, a divorce, a death. We don’t all move because we want to move into a nicer home.” This experience shaped Dawn’s mantra, “If you put your clients first, the rest will follow.” She believes, “Don’t worry about your paycheck, worry about your clients.” For Dawn, reputation is everything. Despite an impressive knack for leveraging the power of marketing, she states, “It doesn’t matter where you advertise or how many people see your face if they don’t think good things when they see it.” She and her assistant, Connie Corwin, work hard to keep that reputation pristine by putting their clients’ needs first every day. Whether a home is at the higher or lower end of the

market, all clients have access to professional photography, staging help, a marketing plan, and the latest technology. Dawn understands the criticality of a compelling online presence, explaining, “A house is like a dating app. Buyers swipe left or swipe right.” In addition to real estate, Dawn is involved in many community organizations and programs, including the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce, Habitat for Humanity, and the Boys & Girls Club of Fauquier. Asked about passions other than work, she eagerly cites family and tennis. There’s one more that’s evident, however: her passion for Warrenton. As she puts it, “We can breathe here.” What an appropriate comment from someone who is a breath of fresh air herself. ❖

dvertisements are already bombarding us about holiday shopping days and deals! I’d like to share some of my recommendations for tech goodies that are on my shopping list. (Disclaimer: I’m not a shareholder in any of these companies!) I’m just sharing results from my experience and online searches for your benefit, with emphasis on cell phone accessories, some fitness related products, and Alexa or other WIFI connected devices. But I highly recommend that you do your own fact checking before deciding to buy any of these products. I assume that, as always, several of these products will be available for deep discounts during the holiday shopping season. NEW CELL PHONES
New cell phones are being released constantly. You might eye the new IPHONE XS; it has the biggest screen for iphone ever, a better camera, up to 512GB storage, and more.

CELL PHONE ACCESSORIES:
My youngest daughter, who teaches children with disabilities in Africa, loved the SOLAR CHARGING PANELS we gave her. It enables her to connect and charge her cellphone and other USB equipment, such as a small light. For myself, I bought some SMALL BATTERY PACKS that can be charged at an outlet and used later to recharge my phone. One thing I’m eyeing, but haven’t gotten yet, is a BLUETOOTH EAR PLUG, which could be a fun gift for a phone-lover.
RAVPower 25000mAh Outdoor Portable Charger Solar battery charger can recharge via power outlet or sunlight, perfect for outdoor enthusiasts!
PHOTOGRAPHY ACCESSORIES
The other thing I would have loved to have had 20 years ago, while hunting for autographs of stars I met, is a POCKET-SIZED INSTANT PRINTER. I could have taken a photo and asked to have it signed right away! By the way, they are selling still INSTANT CAMERAS from Polaroid, which are still popular. Other photography accessories that are available are SMARTPHONE LENS ATTACHMENTS, which my wife wants to

get for me this year. By attaching another lens in front of the existing one on your phone you can get better quality wide-angle and/or zooming capabilities. HEALTH MONITORING DEVICES
The market for health monitoring devices is booming at the moment, and you might find great deals. I have an APPLE IWATCH, and Version 4 is coming out with a lot of additions and enhancements, so that is a holiday gift possibility. FITBIT is another company that created healthoriented wrist devices which features reminders to remain active throughout the day. REMINDERS
Consider a TILE for people who misplace their keys or other things often. By attaching small square “tiles” to your important items, you will be able to locate them quickly via the accompanying program on your cell phone. VIRTUAL ASSISTANTS
Wireless communication devices such as Alexa and Google Home are booming! After Amazon released the ECHO, a 9-inch tall cylinder speaker controlled by a cloud-based voice assistant called Alexa in 2014, GOOGLE HOME followed with their own smart speaker and home assistant in late 2015. In February, 2018, Apple joined with the SIRI-POWERED HOMEPOD. I jumped on the bandwagon early, got the Echo and combined it with an unlimited music plan. Now I can walk into my living room and say “Alexa, play ‘Don’t worry be happy,’” and Bobby McFerrin’s song starts playing. Even better, I can ask it auf Deutsch to play well known German songs. These devices can also access the internet, and even tell you jokes. Also, the Echo becomes a central hub for all WiFi enabled devices. Here is a short list of devices and applications that

you might get that are Alexa compatible: • a thermostat, so you can, for instance, turn on the heat 30 minutes before you get home • light bulbs, so you can turn them on and off remotely • outlets with smart plugs, so all I have to say is “turn on my Christmas tree,” and it lights up (no crawling behind it to find the plug) • doorbell with video camera, so you can see who is at the door and reply even when you’re away from the house • smoke detector, which could alarm your cell phone • other appliances, such as some refrigerators, dishwashers, ovens, ranges, and microwaves all might now offer Wi-Fi connectivity and voice activation. And believe it or not, you can now talk to devices such as your bathtub, showering system, and even a faucet to get the desired temperature, water amount, and more! Only the sky seems to be the limit. I would like to end my shopping list with two more futuristic tech goodies: For your pets, you can get a CAMERA AND FOOD DISPENSING BOX that will allow you to monitor and feed your pet via smartphone. Soon, if the dog woofs in the right tune, it can dispense food as a reward. Have you ever lost your hand luggage at the airport or missed another pair of hands to help schlepp your heavy suitcase? Worry no more, a new AUTONOMOUS CARRY-ON LUGGAGE CASE has been presented at the CES 2018 that has a built in camera with facial recognition to follow its owner wherever he goes. It offers a wristband communication device, as well. I and my wife would love to have one of these for trips back to Germany! If you have any questions or would like a personal tech shopping consultation, contact Dok Klaus at 540-428-2376 or Klaus@dokklaus.com.❖

The Christmas Puppy Think carefully before considering a puppy for Christmas BY CHARLOTTE WAGNER
P
icture this: an adorable young puppy, brimming with cuteness and playfulness, with a red ribbon around his neck romping under the Christmas tree as children wake up Christmas morning. What could be more adorable, more perfect? But you need to stop right there and think. A puppy, which will quickly grow into a dog, which should be a full-fledged member of your family, will take a lot of time and energy on the part of the adults in the household. A dog is a huge commitment. Make sure your lifestyle will accommodate a dog, and that you will be able to give him the time, training, and attention he deserves. Raising a puppy takes anywhere from 12-18 months and requires an insane amount of time, patience, training, and money to do it right. Every year in the months after Christmas, the shelters and rescues are inundated with “Christmas puppies” that were given as gifts and then surrendered when the owners realize how much work and energy puppies take. If the puppy is meant as a gift, make sure whoever is receiving

Sure, they are all deserving of love, shelter, and care … but not every dog will be a good fit for you and your family. Take a deep look at your lifestyle. he holidays are a time when many of us reflect on how fortunate we are and such reflection frequently motivates us to reach out and give to those who are not as lucky. Of course we don’t always know where to go in order to give, so we’ve compiled a list of organizations that could use your help in order to continue helping others. Select one or three, get the family or a group of friends involved, and help make this season especially festive for those less fortunate.

Oh, Christmas Tree
Types of Christmas Trees
BY EMILY CHILDRESS
P
icking out and decorating the Christmas tree is arguably one of the most beloved holiday traditions. In fact, it’s right up there with leaving cookies out for Santa. But did you know that the tradition of decorating trees dates back hundreds of years and that there’s an incredible variety of firs, pines, and spruces from which to choose? Well it does and there are! Read on for a brief history of the Christmas tree and a look at the pros and cons of several of the most popular types. And don’t miss the link at the end of this feature. Use it to find your perfect tree at a Christmas tree farm near you.
History of the Christmas Tree Evergreen trees have been important throughout history and across many cultures. During the dark times of winter when crops did not grow and the sun did not shine, evergreen boughs were often hung throughout villages as a way to represent the coming spring and the bounty it would bring. Christian Germans are first credited with the tradition of bringing decorated trees into their home, and Martin Luther (a 16th century Protestant reformer) is even believed to have started the tradition of hanging lights in trees after walking home and seeing the stars twinkle through the branches of the evergreens. America,
32
however, was quite late to the game on this one: up until the 19th century, Christmas trees were viewed as having pagan ties and most frivolous celebrations of Christmas were looked down upon. It was only when trendsetting Queen Victoria and her husband, Albert, were sketched in a comic gathered around a Christmas tree that people began to embrace the decorated evergreen tree.
{ DECEMBER 2018 |
BALSAM FIR Pros: These trees have a great dark-green color and pyramid shape, and they have a strong Christmas scent. Cons: The branches are flexible and as such, not great for holding up heavy ornaments. DOUGLAS FIR Pros: This common tree usually has light or bluegreen needles that won’t shed and have a sweet scent. Cons: These trees tend to be on the short and compact side, and they aren’t great at holding up heavy ornaments. FRASER FIR Pros: Fraser Firs have a strong and lasting scent and are great for holding up heavier ornaments. Cons: These trees have a dense and compact look.
NOBLE FIR Pros: This tree is classic looking and smelling, and is well equipped to hold heavy ornaments. Cons: The limbs and needles are shorter than average on this tree.
NORWAY SPRUCE Pros: The Norway Spruce is cone-shaped and carries a mild and pleasing scent throughout its gorgeous forest-green needles. Cons: This tree tends to shed its sharp needles.
WHITE FIR Pros: The soft blue-green needles carry a citrusy scent and don’t fall off easily. Cons: These trees take a long time to grow and as such, can be on the more expensive side.
WHITE SPRUCE Pros: The gray-green needles hold much better than most spruces, and this tree can also support heavier ornaments. Cons: The needles have an unpleasant odor when crushed, and the needles tend to drop off.
BLUE SPRUCE Pros: The silver-blue needles don’t shed and this tree has a wonderful symmetrical shape that can also support heavier ornaments. Cons: The needles are sharp and unscented, unless they break, in which case they will have an unpleasant smell.
SCOTS PINE Pros: This popular Christmas tree holds its needles well and has a long-lasting pine scent. Cons: The color is not as vibrant as many Christmas trees and crooked trunks are common. WHITE PINE Pros: The soft blue-green needles hold well and are best for those with sensitive noses or allergies to pine scents. This tree is very tall, which makes it great for rooms with high ceilings, and is affordable. Cons: This tree has virtually no scent and cannot support heavy ornaments. ❖

The Gift of a Lifetime After donating a kidney, Marianne Clyde urges others to consider organ donation
D
Lake, tell me about your illness. When were you diagnosed with Chronic Kidney Disease? LAKE: My primary care doctor caught it at stage 3 in 2015. CKD is such a “secret disease”; you

hear a lot about cancer and heart disease, but not a lot about CKD. First couple of checks I didn’t pay much attention to it. I didn’t feel very different, I just didn’t have quite as much energy. But when it progresses to stage 4, you need to start dialysis. I did dialysis for almost a year before I connected with Marianne. Dialysis really affects your life, you have to do it three times a week, and it takes three and a half hours of just sitting in a lounge chair each time. It’s hard to maintain a normal schedule, to go to work, lead a normal life. What are the statistics for CKD in the U.S.? LAKE: There are more than 600,000 cases of kidney disease in the nation. There are well over 100,000 people on the transplant waiting list, and some have been on there for years. When did you start looking for a kidney transplant? What happened then? LAKE: Once you go on dialysis, you start looking for a kidney. My wife and other members of my family were not eligible to donate. The hardest part about this is that you have to be proactive, you can’t sit back and wait for a kidney to come to you. You have to get out there and advocate for yourself. It’s hard; you don’t really look any different, people don’t know you’re sick unless you tell them. I posted on social media, networked, and handed out flyers about my need for a

ecember and the holidays are times when we think about, and give thanks for, all our blessings. This December, Chronic Kidney Disease patient Lake Lester of Warrenton is thankful for his health and thankful for the generosity and kindness of local businesswoman and therapist Marianne Clyde, which enabled him to have a kidney transplant after a year of dialysis. A year ago, the two were acquainted but didn’t know each other very well. That changed this past summer when Lake, 76, needed a kidney transplant, and Marianne became involved. Although she wasn’t a match for Lake, by donating a kidney through the Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation she enabled him to move to the top of the transplant list in what is called a “paired exchange.” Within two weeks of her commiting to donate a kidney, Marianne and Lake were scheduled for their surgeries, a lightning fast result for something that can otherwise take years, even decades. Their mission now is to educate people about Chronic Kidney Disease and kidney donation by telling others about their experience. They took the time to sit down with Warrenton Lifestyle and tell us about it.
kidney. You essentially have to go out and ask people “Hey, do you have an extra kidney I could use?” It’s very hard to be your own advocate. Then, through online research, I found Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation, an independent organization that uses a computer algorithm to pair kidney donors and recipients. That’s where Marianne came in. Marianne, how did you become involved? MARIANNE: I knew Lake from a couple of networking groups in Warrenton, and I saw his post on social media. I thought I wasn’t eligible for donating because I was on high blood pressure medication, and then a year later when I wasn’t taking it anymore, I saw another post, and emailed him. He gave me the contact information for MedStar Georgetown Transplant Institute. So I looked into it. The decision to donate a kidney was
relatively easy for me. You can be perfectly healthy with a normal life expectancy with only one kidney. The risk of death by donating a kidney is 3 in 10,000, and I was willing to do that. I talked to the surgeons about that, and they said, “We’ve never had a death at this hospital.” There are other possible complications, but honestly, I don’t even remember them because I considered them so minimal. So you were a match for Lake? MARIANNE: No, I wasn’t. When I registered to become a donor with the Alliance for Paired Kidney Donation with Lake as my partner, it made him eligible to move to the top of the list for available kidneys through that organization. They have a computer algorithm that matches donors and recipients. A live donor kidney is preferable; it is much healthier and will last longer than a deceased donation.

How long did it take for you both to be paired with matches through this organization? LAKE: They told me it could take about three months, and I thought, “Well, that’s a lot better than waiting years,” but within a couple weeks of Marianne committing to donate, I was contacted with a match. We had our surgeries on the same day, August 2. I’ll never forget that day. What happened then? MARIANNE: Well, the first thing they do is put you through extensive medical testing. The medical team needs to be sure that your kidney is healthy, and they need to be sure that you are healthy enough so that donating a kidney is not any risk to you. They put you through every kind of test: blood tests, MRIs, chest x-rays, they check your surrounding organs, they check and see if you have any trace of cancer anywhere in your body which could impose a risk to both you and the recipient. If you do have any problem that will put you, or the recipient, at risk for any future health issue, they will rule you out. They have you talk to a social worker, to make sure you’re mentally ok and you know why you’re donating and there’s no outside pressure or financial incentive (it is illegal to be reimbursed for an organ donation). The surgeons come in and talk to you, and they’re very clear about what the process is and what the risks are. The kidney exchange coordinator is always there to answer any questions, and gets back to you right away. They are absolutely amazing. I was never afraid even once through the whole process. So tell me about the surgeries and the recoveries. MARIANE: My surgery took about three hours. It was laparoscopic, and I’ve got four little puncture wounds. They removed the kidney through my old hysterectomy scar. Honestly, in my experience, it was never painful…it was uncomfortable, but not painful. They keep you in the hospital for 24 hours
36
{ DECEMBER 2018 |
afterward, just because they want to watch you. LAKE: My surgery took about two and a half hours. They actually didn’t remove either of my kidneys, so they had to create a space for the extra kidney. It was pretty major surgery. My doctor said, “We had to open you up like a manhole cover and make room for another kidney in there.” Really, they just stuffed the new kidney in there and hooked it up and it started working right away. But I wasn’t in pain, they prescribed pain meds and I may have taken them a couple of times in the hospital, but not afterward. It was just sore, it wasn’t painful. We had surgery on Thursday, and I got out on Tuesday. I would have been released earlier, but they were trying to get all the medications approved through Medicare. What about after the surgeries? LAKE: Right after the surgery, I went twice a week to Georgetown for a check, now I’m going once a week, and it will be less frequent as time goes on providing everything works out right. I take anti-rejection drugs, and I will for as long as I have the kidney. The main thing for me is to eat healthily, exercise, and drink water. I have to drink 3 litres of water a day. For the first few weeks, I couldn’t lift anything over 10 pounds. But they encouraged me to be up and to walk, so soon I was walking a couple miles a day. I felt better than I had in years. When you’re going through life in stage 4 CKD, it’s very taxing on your body. But now I do everything I was doing before the surgery and then some. But it’s so important to follow up with your doctors so you take the best care you can of the healthy kidney that someone was willing to give you. MARIANNE: I was told to expect four to six weeks of recovery time, but it really didn’t take that long, I felt pretty good. I went back to work after a couple of weeks, but after a week or so I was in the office doing paperwork. It
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
was a week before I could drive. There’s no indication that I have only one kidney, my prognosis and life expectancy are normal. My thought before the surgery was to be as healthy as I could so I could give the healthiest kidney I could give, and I’ve just maintained that lifestyle afterward, to keep my one kidney healthy. I eat well, exercise, and drink a lot of water. So you would recommend Georgetown Transplant Institute? LAKE: I have to recommend Georgetown Transplant very highly. They are the fifth ranked transplant center in the country. That’s a pretty good rating. They do over 200 kidney transplants a year, as well as other organ transplants. MARIANNE: Honestly, when you are going through the process, they are absolutely amazing there, the surgeons are very personable and warm. They’ll answer all your questions, address all your concerns, and they know you by name. The whole experience was incredible. What was the cost of the procedures? LAKE: My Medicare and supplemental insurance covered the whole thing for both of us, except for copays for medication and that sort of thing. MARIANNE: It didn’t cost me a thing. I think the most expensive thing for me was $5 a day for parking in Georgetown. Marianne, are you glad you donated a kidney? The thrill of being able to look someone in the face and know they’re the beneficiary of your donation, I mean, really, it’s so amazing and rewarding. What do you hope that people learn from this article? LAKE: What we are trying to do is educate people about being a donor and about the paired exchange. There’s lots of people out there who need a kidney. You’ve got two, you only need one, and the risks of donating are minimal.
MARIANNE: And don’t rule yourself out as a donor if you have a history of some medical problems or are on medication. I actually didn’t need to wait until I was off blood pressure medication to donate...if I’d known that I could have saved Lake a year of dialysis. If you’re thinking about donating, go in for testing, and ask some questions. They will rule you out if you’re not healthy enough. What we want to do is remove the fear of donating organs in the hope that more people will choose to give. In my experience, it was not difficult; it was short, quick, and there wasn’t much pain. Honestly, it’s just a few weeks out of your life when you’re not as active as you usually are, so it’s worthwhile to take that time to help someone else. ❖
The long-term risks of kidney donation • You will have a scar from the donor operation- the size and location of the scar will depend on the type of operation you have. • Some donors have reported long-term problems with pain, nerve damage, hernia or intestinal obstruction. These risks seem to be rare, but there are currently no national statistics on the frequency of these problems. • In addition, people with one kidney may be at a greater risk of high blood pressure, proteinuria, and reduced kidney function • You should discuss these risks with your transplant team, and ask for center-specific statistics related to these problems. a lot of sparkle. For the last few years I have stayed away from the traditional reds and greens, especially mixed together, but I occasionally will incorporate one of them as an accent color in a space. The challenge is in creating a look that is cohesive but also feels festive, and of course is beautiful to look at. Overall, I strive to create a feeling of casual elegance, just like our home, I want it to be pretty but livable at the same time.

When do you start decorating for the holidays? How long does it take you to make it “perfect”? For my online work our holiday season really gets going in October. People begin searching for holiday ideas very early in the fall. Most of our work has to be completed so it can be photographed and ready to go ‘live’ for the holiday season, which

typically peaks the week after Thanksgiving. It’s not unusual for me to have trees going up around Halloween, and I am usually fully decorated by mid-November and doing photography then. My family is used to having Thanksgiving with a Christmas tree in the room!
The nice part is it gives me more time to deal with the other holiday “stuff” in December, so I actually like that it is all done early. I don’t know that it’s ever really perfect, I am always tweaking and moving things around. Of course, we live in our home too so with three kids

and a dog things never stay perfect for long!
Do you enjoy decorating for the holidays? Why? I love it! It’s such a magical time of year. I am fortunate that I get to do what I truly enjoy for my line of work. It is always fun to see what new trends and creative ideas emerge from year to year.
My family is used to having Thanksgiving with a Christmas tree in the room! Does your family help? Do the kids get into it? Not really! One year I had a tight deadline and my mom helped me get a tree set up and decorated quickly the day before Halloween. My daughter and I work together to decorate her own tree in her room, but my teenage boys and husband aren’t really into helping. I do think they appreciate the results once the house is all lit up and festive, though.
Do you do different things every year? How do you change it up? Yes, staying relevant online means always having something new to share. I think a lot about my color schemes from room to room and plan what I’ll do differently in the weeks leading up to the holidays. This year I am creating a blush pink flocked tree in my home office and a pale blue and silver tree in our family room.

What are your staples for decorating for the holidays? Where do you get them? I shop mostly at HomeGoods (one of our sponsors). I also try to find unique items at local resources like Merrifield Garden Center and the Lucketts Holiday Market. My staples are always changing, but I have several good quality flocked (the snow-covered look) trees that are always the focal point. My ornament collection is a little crazy, I have so many color schemes by now. I also love using ribbon. I am constantly adding

to my decor collection. Sometimes I’ll find a unique item and that will spark an idea, then I build upon that until I have a space that can be photographed.
How many Christmas trees do you have? This year I’ll have four full-sized trees decorated in our home. I sometimes do smaller ones in my boys’ rooms (with their special ornaments) if time permits. Once I decorated a tree for our front porch; that was fun, and the neighbors seemed to enjoy it. ❖

It Takes a Village Maybe Christmas, perhaps, means a little bit more... in Warrenton. BY PAM KAMPHUIS
W
arrenton is a very special place during the holidays. It has received awards from Southern Living, and been named several times in the Top 20 Events in the Southeast by the Southeast Tourism Society, and it’s easy to see why. The whole of Old Town is turned into a Christmas wonderland, with one of the central pieces being Gumdrop Square with Santa’s Secret Shop, and one of the primary activities being the Christmas Parade, which ushers in the Christmas season. The decorations are astounding, with decorated Christmas trees everywhere, wreaths and garlands and ribbons and ornaments…and lights…tons and tons of twinkling lights! Fun for children, of course, but fun and nostalgic for the adults as well, as everything is impeccably done. And let’s face it, when you’re an adult, the magic of Christmas is seeing your child’s face light up with wonder. But where does all this magic come from? It comes from a large pool of volunteers from the whole

community who pull off this amazing event every year, working hard, working together, and coordinating efforts. Lachelle Yoder, previous director of Gumdrop Square, said, “It really boggles the mind how many people are involved.” Charity Furness, the executive director for Experience Old Town Warrenton, said, “It’s a lot of work, and it takes a lot of people and a lot of community effort, but the result is worth it.” She added, “It’s really a year long planning process, and work on a daily basis from the beginning of August until the end of the year.” Gumdrop Square brings the community to Old Town Warrenton to experience the small town charm of our historic district and that is the mission of EOTW. So what does it take to pull this off? The people involved Aside from Gumdrop Square, there are many other things in Warrenton that make Christmas season magical, so it’s not just the job of EOTW. Furness explained, “The town decorates the streets, the Rotary Club puts up the large tree on the courthouse steps, Sean Polster directs the Christmas Parade, Kelly Ann Richardson organizes the artisans and crafters, Lachelle Yoder and Tim Dingus at Drum ‘n Strum work on musical support for the carolers, and Bob Grant organizes the EOTW volunteers. Carter Nevill provides valuable insight from years past. There are just so many people involved.” Early planing For Furness, the first order of business in early August is lining up the main guy… Santa Claus! There are seven Santas who rotate shifts at Gum Drop Square. Then the John Barton Payne building must be reserved—the library generously

donates a large portion of that expense—permits to close the streets have to be applied for and approved by the town council, volunteers—about 70 of them—to be organized. Then there’s the entertainment to be arranged, which includes carolers, music, and dance performances. The gifts for Santa’s Secret Shop are ordered and delivered in October. “If we can get them from the local merchants, we do. For instance, the ornaments are made at Earth, Glaze, and Fire, Latitudes Fair Trade is providing some of the items, and Voncanon General Store is ordering the candy canes. But we also need to keep things cost effective, so some gifts and supplies we purchase online,” said Furness. Once the presents for Santa’s Secret Shop have arrived, they are wrapped by volunteers all over the county. “Churches and different organizations have wrapping parties all over the place, it’s really cool,” said Yoder. “Sometimes they have them at wineries.” Initial setup Then, just before Thanksgiving, the real fun—and work—starts! The Tuesday before Thanksgiving, the setup starts. All the decorations for Gum Drop Square are stored in the very crowded attic of the EOTW office on South Third Street. “We have Christmas trees, and lights, and tubs and tubs of ornaments, and garlands and wreaths and nutcrackers,” said Furness. Trustees from the jail help move all the decorations from there to the John Barton Payne Building; it takes about three trips to get it all moved. They help set up as much as possible, like with the bigger trees and the garlands, and then sponsors and volunteers come in. The local VFW, led by Tim Nosal, sets up all the trees and puts the lights on and makes sure everything is lit. Decorating Then the Friday, Saturday, and Sunday after Thanksgiving is when the decorations go up. “We have people from the VFW, and school groups, and Families 4 Fauquier brings a lot of people, and we get everything decorated,” said Yoder. “We have a lot of people in that comparatively small room, and it gets crowded and hot and loud. But that’s ok, we don’t mind it because we know we’re making magic. We play Christmas Carols to get in the seasonal mood and serve pizza at midday.” One of the hardest parts, Yoder said, is the breakdown after the season is over. “We have trouble getting volunteers for that, it’s so close to Christmas and everyone is busy, and, let’s face it, it’s just not as much fun as setting up.” The Christmas Parade For Sean Polster, director of the Christmas Parade which takes place right before the first opening of Gum Drop Square, the planning is also a year long process. A firefighter by profession, Polster implements a system that is employed on his job to manage the workflow of organizing the parade. “We use what’s called the National Incident Management System. You have one person in charge, then the rest of the duties are broken down and delegated very clearly. Once this system is
implemented, it really runs on cruise control,” he said. This year is the biggest parade yet, with 93 registered groups. Polster, who had been directing the parade since 2013, has between 12 and 15 “elves” every year, but it’s still logistically a very big feat getting everybody in and staged in order and ready to go in under an hour. Even so, the parade is important to Polster. “The parade is one of the things that makes Warrenton special, it’s the community. It’s the people that live here, it’s the people who work in our community, and those that spend time here that make it special. This is just another event that brings the community together and increases the quality of life,” he explained. Opening Night Does it get crazy before opening? You bet it does. Furness said, “It seems overwhelming, but a lot of people keep telling me not to worry, that it will come together...somehow, between all the people involved, it always does. Like the Grinch says, you can’t stop Christmas from coming!” Every year, Santa arrives at the end of the Christmas Parade and ushers in the Christmas season, and immediately after that Gumdrop Square is open for business. It takes 12 volunteers to man the event: six teens and six adults. The teens act as “elves” and introduce the children to Santa and guide them through their Christmas shopping at Santa’s Secret Shop. The adults supervise, take the photographs, and do line control. That can be tricky, Furness said. “We want to keep the line moving, but we also don’t want to rush the kids with Santa. We do want a meaningful experience for the kids. After all, they’ve been waiting all year to talk to Santa.” So how much money does it take to pull off Christmas in Warrenton? About $10,000, said Furness. “We have generous sponsors like Appleton Campbell, Cropp Metcalf and Middleburg Bank, and that covers the gifts and the wrapping paper and the decorations. The Christmas spirit Yoder explained, “It’s just magical…last year Bob Grant asked me, ‘why do you do this?’ and I told him it’s because we’re making magic. When the little kids who come in, they sit on Santa’s lap...there have been times I’ve had to step out because I was getting tearful, because it’s just so spellbinding to them. It’s enchanting even for the adults. It’s so well done, it’s totally nostalgic.” Christmas in Warrenton exists because of the generosity of sponsors, and the generosity of the volunteers with their time and talent. But it’s reciprocated by the community. Yoder said, “It’s the generosity of the people who come in that’s really special, the people who attend and bring their kids. We always sell ornaments and tickets, but we also have a donation box, just a box that says donations are welcome, and we’d find $100 bills in there. It’s that generosity at that level that makes you realize that people really care. The Christmas spirit really comes out in this town. People really appreciate what it stands for, and they support it.” ❖
“The parade is one of the things that makes Warrenton special, it’s the community. It’s the people that live here, it’s the people who work in our community, and those that spend time here that make it special.”
Gum Drop Square and Santa’s Secret Shop are open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays during December (until Santa’s final night on Dec. 21), On Fridays, Main Street is closed to traffic and the street is filled with artisans and crafters, carolers, performances, and food. There is even a beer and wine stop this year.

Creative Christmas with SHERRIE
Decoupage your own Old Town Warrenton ornament
S
herrie Carter of Sherrie’s Stuff in Old Town Warrenton is a wellknown artist in our community. Her distinctive handmade style of rustic and folky that characterizes her work and everything in her shop is very popular with customers. For our holiday issue, Sherrie has shared with us her expertise with decoupage and has provided us with directions and a template for a DIY tree ornament featuring the Old Town Warrenton Courthouse. Decoupage, or mixed media art, is all the rage right now, and the beauty of it is that anyone can do it! This easy art form involves decorating an object by gluing colored paper cutouts onto it in combination with special paint effects and other decorative elements added with a variety of art supplies. There is no right or wrong way to create with decoupage, and you can’t possibly do it wrong. Sherrie says, “Everyone’s creative; you can’t mess up. You can always add another layer, a little more paint, another design, until you’re happy with the result. The more whimsical, the better!” Your creation may not look exactly like the photos, but it will be even better because it’s a creation of your own. Let your imagination take over...get creative!

DIRECTIONS: 1. Cut out each template shape from this page. 2. Trace the shapes on to your choice of scrapbook paper and cut out. Create two versions of shape “C.” The picture below shows Sherrie’s cut-out shapes.
8. Try starting with shape “F,” which will be the cupola of The Courthouse. Place it about 1/4” from the top of the ornament, directly in the center. Adhere by repeating steps 3-6. 9. Build your courthouse scene piece by piece. Just repeat steps 3-6 for each shape. Shape “H” (the foreground) will be the last shape you place. Once you have placed all your shapes, your ornament should look something like this. (see below)
A (BACKGROUND)
3. With a paint brush, apply a thin layer of Mod Podge to the front surface of the paper mache ornament. TIP: be sure to check the orientation of the ornament before you start to be sure the ribbon hanger is on top. 4. Place your cutout of shape “A” down to adhere it, lining up its edges to the edge of the ornament. 5. Use your fingers or a flat edge to flatten out any air bubbles or wrinkles. TIP: Don’t worry if the pieces of paper hang off the edge of the ornament a little, since you’re going to be sanding the edges at the end. 6. Paint another thin layer of Mod Podge directly over the entire surface of shape “A.”
F

10. Let dry completely. 11. Use colored pencils, a fine tipped sharpie, and/or acrylic paint to add accents such as stairs, windows, snow, and trees to your design. Don’t forget to add a few ornaments and a star to the Christmas tree! Add glitter glue for extra dimension.

Vallie’s Vintage Jewelry offers a connection to the past STORY BY PAM KAMPHUIS PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE
S
tepping into Vallie’s Vintage Jewelry on Third Street in Warrenton is like stepping back in time. The small shop on the quaint side street, once a deli with a jukebox in the 1940s, is filled with light from the big showcase windows that shines on the old hardwood floor and wide-board cream-colored walls. Frank Sinatra music plays in the background (every single day) and, of course, all the beautiful sparkly vintage rings, bracelets, and necklaces in the period jewelry cases beckon. It’s almost as if a flapper will come dancing out of one of the showcases and immerse you in the intrigue of the roaring twenties. Vallie’s Vintage Jewelry, owned by Cynthia Salamone, is celebrating its fourth anniversary in Old Town this year. The shop carries vintage (25-100 year old) and antique (over 100 years old) jewelry. Cynthia started off in the jewelry business slowly, while she raised her family. “My store has been called Vallie’s Vintage Jewelry since the ‘80s, when I started doing jewelry shows. I got some business cards and started doing shows whenever I could,” she said. After retiring from a full time career with the government and her children leaving the nest, Cynthia knew she wanted to start a shop in Old Town Warrenton. Some will remember when Cynthia started selling her vintage jewelry as a pop up shop in the space that used to house the tea room at Jimmy’s Market, now the location of Deja Brew. She stayed there for nine months, and then looked into starting a permanent shop in October of 2013. She is delighted with her Third Street shop, which all her customers agree is the perfect spot for her. It just fits Cynthia and her vintage collection like a glove. “I love being on a side street,” said Cynthia, who doesn’t feel at all that her business is hampered by not having a Main Street storefront. “People see my sandwich

board and come running down, and once they get here, they stay awhile,” she said. “They call my shop ‘jewelry heaven.’” Vallie’s is named after Cynthia’s beloved grandmother, who introduced her to the world of vintage jewelry when she was a child. “We would go around to flea markets and antique shops. I just loved the smells, the colors. When I was seven or eight years old, all these collections of jewelry were just like a wonderland. I can remember reaching up and wanting to see the sparkly things. I get little girls in here who are the same that really remind me of that magical time,” she said. Cynthia attributes her success to her considerable experience through the years, and her passion for what she does: “I’ve learned and continue to learn through 35-plus years, and I’m always reading and looking online, flipping through jewelry books. I’m always thinking about jewelry; I can’t wait to get up in the morning and post new acquisitions on my Instagram and Facebook pages, even before I have my coffee.” What she also has is an eagle eye for beauty and an intense appreciation for the quality of the master jewelry craftsmen of the past. Cameos, for instance. “People are really drawn to them, they are classic, timeless. I only offer master carved cameos...cameos are originally from Italy, and the master carvers get everything just right, right down to the eyelashes, the noses. They’re just perfect,” she explained.

Haute Cakes Pastry Shop is a boutique wedding & event bakery located at 7 North 5th St. in Old Town Warrenton operated by Megan Nagel and Marisa Ward. Started in 2014 out of Megan’s kitchen, they opened their storefront this year. Megan says, “For me, cake is love. I love the process of making cake because it is a perfect combination of creative license and attention to detail. From start to finish, each cake is handcrafted as a unique, original piece of pastry art… and in the end, I’ve added a bit of beauty to the world, and hopefully given others a happy memory and a reason to smile.”

PICK!
Tasting the cocktails after the photo shoot was one of the best parts of this article! Pam, Warrenton Lifestyle’s editor, chose the Cranberry Comfort as her favorite of the three. Besides the delicious combination of the sweetness of the rosemary simple syrup and the tartness of the cranberry juice, the drink has a light finish due to the splash of prosecco that finishes it off. Plus, she loves the holidays, and the garnishes of the cranberries and sugared rosemary made it so festive to look at!
kara’s PICK!
Kara our Art Director was smitten with this sweet yet tart cocktail that’s perfect for those who don’t like drinks with too much of a kick. “Grapefruit lovers beware,” she says “this delicious cocktail will make you question whether it contains any alcohol at all!... but with a hefty two ounces of vodka, it will remind you it’s there when you’re done.”

THE SEASON W ITH
A
Homemade Wreath BY EMILY CHILDRESS
A
wreath is a harbinger of the holidays, a chance to show off your individual style, and a lovely way to greet guests. Stored properly, it can last for years and become a staple of your seasonal decorating. And yes, making your own wreath can be a relaxing way to spend an afternoon or evening. Follow the simple steps here to create one for yourself or to give as a gift. Note: Please read through the directions prior to starting your project. Thanks!
What You’ll Need
How to Make Your Wreath
• Wire wreath base: a base made of a few connecting circles of wire that looks similar to a frame
1. Begin by forming a solid bundle of greenery. Pinch the stems together, lay it on the wreath base and wrap floral wire around it a few times. 2. Continue this process all around the wreath base. As you add each bundle, overlap the previous one by half, then wrap the wire around the stems. Continue adding bundles until you reach the starting point.
• Thin green wire (25-30 gauge wire is best) • Scissors
3. If you’d like, you can now intersperse clusters of holly, pinecones, bells, fruits, or other embellishments between the greenery bundles.
• Hot glue or glue gun • Lots of artificial pine, cypress, spruce, fir, or evergreen bunches • Red berries, snow-capped pine cones, ornaments, or other decorations
4. Want a more wintery feel? Add a touch of “snow” to your creation. Holding a bottle of spray snow a good distance from the wreath to prevent clumps, lightly spray the tops of the bundles. If you’d rather skip the mess, you can always purchase pre-snowed greenery at the store.
• Battery-powered tea candles or Christmas lights
5. For shimmer and shine, spray-paint a portion of the greenery gold or silver before making the bundles. This will also extend the wreath’s life.
• Spray snow if you want a snow-capped wreath
6. Like the look of your wreath? Congratulations. You’re done! Still looking for some extra oomph? Add ornaments with hot glue or work batterypowered tea lights or Christmas lights through the greenery. It’s your wreath, so use what makes you feel festive.
• Gold or silver spray paint if you’d like some shine

At Tribute, we don’t focus on giving great care. Honestly, for us, that’s just too low of a bar. So we treat older adults differently. We forge meaningful relationships based on admiration and trust. We’re there for them with encouragement and anything they need. This way, care is a by-product of a loving relationship, not a slogan. There is purpose in every breath. Let us help you see how.
