Paul Morrison D I V O R C E M E D I AT I O N HOW IT WORKS 1. You decide to be in charge of the outcome of your own case instead of letting a Judge tell you what to do. 2. You or your lawyer contacts our mediation coordinator, Sharon Wiggins, who sends initial paperwork and sets up a pre-mediation conference call with Paul to ascertain the issues, schedule the date and place for the mediation and set ground rules. 3. Show up with an open mind and settle your case with Paul’s help.
COST Paul requires $3500 to be placed in a trust account and billed against. This fee is usually split between the parties. Paul bills at $350 per hour for mediation services. Most cases are successfully resolved in less than 8 hours.
About Paul Morrison Paul began his own law firm in 1987, concentrating on trial work including primarily Family law. In 1999, Paul began performing neutral case evaluations and mediations with an emphasis on divorce cases. With a success rate of over 95%, Paul began offering his services to the Northern Virginia, Piedmont area in 2017. As a practicing lawyer, Paul has a unique insight into the current judicial thinking, which gives him the tools to obtain inexpensive settlements and avoid costly and emotionally exhausting litigation for his mediation clients.

Greetings, Pam… I wanted to write to say how much I enjoyed the latest issue of your magazine. I’m new to the area and have seen maybe a dozen publications of this sort over the years (glossy ads wrapped in mostly ho-hum advertorial content) – in Leesburg, the Chicago and Dallas suburbs, and on and on. Warrenton Lifestyle is far and away the best of the bunch. I somewhat nervously read the first article… and liked it… and then the second, third, straight through to the last page – probably every word. I ended up connecting with the folks at Open Book and Gloria’s about how I can get involved with what they’re doing. I even tore out the two recipes… and I’m no cook! As a former journalist and PR guy, and I just thought you should know that you’re delivering some knock-out content. Nice work. — Grant Rampy

This letter means a lot to me for many reasons. Of course, like anyone else, I like to hear that people think I’m doing a good job. But just the fact that Mr. Rampy took the time to write in is special. I love to hear from my readers — those who like the content, but also those who may not (although I haven’t gotten any feedback like that, which is good). But the content of the issue drew the writer into the community and inspired him to get involved, which is my main goal in producing a local magazine. We run occasional printed and social media promotions titled “Everyone has a story to tell,” encouraging people to let us know of any interesting things going on in our community that would make a good article. Some of our best stories have come in that way, as suggestions from readers. So please, I’d love to know what you’d like to see more of — or less of — in Warrenton Lifestyle. Call me at 540-349-2951 or email me at pam@piedmontpub.com. I look forward to hearing from you! Wishing everyone in the Fauquier community a very happy holiday season.

llie herself is running about greeting guests and asking what they want to eat when I arrive at Ellie’s Place restaurant on Main Street in downtown Warrenton for a chat about her new eatery. I order a uniquely named Drum and Strum BLT sandwich made with pimento cheese, Ellie brings me a bag of chips to the table, and her parents agree to join us for a conversation. Even though it’s Ellie’s Place, she needs a little help from Mom and Dad; after all, she is only three and a half years old. Ellie jumps into a seat at one of the nine inside tables. She is carrying a can of Old Bay seasoning, which she politely returns to the shelf when I tell her that I don’t really need it. Apparently, some customers ask for it for the lobster and crab bisque from the menu. She tells me her parents named the restaurant Ellie’s Place because, when her family first entered the empty lower level suite in the heart of downtown last spring, she told her parents she liked it and named it after herself then and there. Her parents agreed.

With Ellie’s approval, her parents Ann and Zan Dial signed the lease in May and held their grand opening on July 4th of this year. Since then, they say they have been warmly welcomed by other downtown merchants and local government representatives, as well as residents and employees of Old Town businesses stopping by for lunch. Sometimes, luncheon guests choose to eat at one of the outside tables or take lunch with them back to their office for themselves and co-workers. Ellie says she leaves the food preparation to her parents, especially her dad, who studied culinary arts at the University

of South Carolina and has experience as a personal chef and caterer, as well as a restaurant owner at a previous restaurant in Middleburg. After dabbling in political science in college and considering the possibility of life as a lawyer, he realized what he really enjoyed was preparing dishes and catering. He admitted he enjoyed watching chefs like Julia Childs on television and went back to school to pursue his real passion. Zan initially became involved with restaurants in Charleston and Columbia in his native South Carolina before working as a personal chef and starting his own catering business. Using his former involvement in political studies, he contacted friends in northern Virginia who were working on Capitol Hill to see how he could become involved in catering for politicians in D.C. He moved to Virginia and began providing catering for individual congressmen and senators and their associates and friends. He helped cater a variety of fundraisers, including a major fund-raising event to support St. Jude’s Children's Hospital. He also has done catering for lavish events in

New York, including at The Hamptons. Some ten years ago, Ann entered his life. Raised in a baker’s family in West Virginia, just across from Cumberland, Maryland, Ann found that she and Zan had mutual interests, and Ann began offering him ideas for catering jobs. Five years ago, they married; eighteen months later Ellie joined the team. They moved to Sterling and became owners of Federal Street Café in Middleburg until closing it two years ago when the cost of the lease was raised dramatically. In December of last year, they purchased a house near The Plains, and in May acquired the lease for the location of Ellie’s Place at 70 Main Street. When you enter Ellie’s Place, just below street level, you will find a menu offering a wide variety of sandwiches—including ones you can build yourself, soups—including the lobster and crab bisque, salads, and baked potatoes with various toppings. Gluten-free items are also on the menu. You can top off your lunch with a cheesecake brownie or a cookie; during my visit, homemade chocolatechip cookies were available. A favorite: Ellie’s features a special J. Tucker Harvest Salad topped with a double order of chicken salad.

Zan also offers catering, something that helped him get started in the restaurant business. He has already catered some local events, including the Boys and Girls Club Skeet Shoot and meetings of the Fauquier County Board of Supervisors. He is eager to talk to other organizations who may be interested and indicates he is very flexible in what he can provide, literally “catering” to the wishes of his customers. Something to look forward to and that will definitely bring me back is the handdipped Hershey’s ice cream Ellie’s will begin to serve after freezers are installed. Zan and Ann also are planning to possibly expand their hours of operation to include opening on Sundays. I can just imagine stopping by for a cone of ice cream after church or a Sunday morning walk, especially if Ellie is there to welcome me with her cheerful smile and child enthusiasm. After all, it is her place. Ellie’s is currently open on Monday through Friday from 11 to 4, and on Saturday from 11 to 3. The website is at elliesplaceonmain.com or you can call at 540216-7810. ❖

Melting the Years Away The Silver Tones Swing Band and the Silver Belles bring the music of the ’40s, ’50s, and ’60s into today.

the John Marshall Courthouse and awaiting the march of service members down Main Street. As the service members approached, the band prepared to play Glenn Miller’s “American Patrol” to kick off the concert. This song, a well-known melody of the big band era, is just one of hundreds of great American classics in the Silver Tones’ music library. On the downbeat of the 17-piece swing orchestra, the streets came alive with swing dancers dressed in patriotic attire and the music of Glenn Miller filled the streets of Warrenton. The warm summer evening went on, as the band played favorites from many decades of music, including Aretha Franklin’s

“R-E-S-P-E-C-T,” the Andrews Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” James Brown’s “I Feel Good,” and Benny Goodman’s version of the big band classic “Sing, Sing, Sing.” Young and old alike lined the streets and toes tapped as all enjoyed timeless American melodies from the 1940s, ’50s, and ’60s. Good, clean fun, with good, clean music. That’s what the Silver Tones Swing Band brings to our community. Founded by band leaders and husband and wife team Dave Shuma and Wendy Marie in 2012, the band has been gaining popularity steadily over the last seven years. Shuma recalls, “In the summer of 2012, Wendy and I were sitting at home enjoying an evening together. The conversation came around to our musical endeavors together and that we wanted more of them. I suggested that we start a big band. I knew that Wendy had a wonderful singing voice and that she was a great musician, so I asked if she would like to sing. Wendy immediately said, ‘Sure!’ And so, on a warm late summer evening in 2012, the Silver Tones Swing Band started in our garage.” Shuma and Wendy Marie were members of the Fauquier Community Band (FCB)

at the time of the band’s creation — Shuma on trumpet and Wendy Marie on French horn. They hand-selected several musicians from FCB to be key members of the early Silver Tones, including Sherman West on lead alto sax, Jon Carr on lead trombone, and Gerry Hoffman on clarinet and alto sax. This core group of musicians created the cohesive sound that you still hear today at Silver Tones performances. Hoffman recalls, “I remember the day Dave came up to Sherman and me in community band and asked which of us played saxophone and would be interested in trying some big band music. We both said ‘yes,’ and together we both pulled our dusty saxes out of the closets and made the trip to the Shuma garage for the very first rehearsal. It was a true ‘garage band,’ and I have been playing with the Silver Tones ever since.” Hoffman, a retired dentist and longtime resident of Fauquier County, continued, “I just enjoy playing the type of music a full big band puts out, all the sections coming together to create the rich sound of a big band versus a small jazz combo. And it’s the friendship of the entire gang, all playing music for fun, and not just looking for a paycheck for their time.”

The Silver Belles vocal trio, the sweethearts and headliners of the Silver Tones, are made up of Wendy Marie, Larke Pain, and Amy Hewes. This dynamic singing trio brings to life the great music of the Andrews Sisters, plus so much more. Wendy Marie sings lead, and when not singing the tight harmonies of the Andrews Sisters, you can hear the ladies performing classic songs like “Peppermint Twist,” “Shake a Tail Feather,” “Good Rockin’ Daddy,” “Route 66,” and ABBA’s “Dancing Queen.” On special occasions, the ladies even do a rendition of Bruno Mars’ hit “Uptown Funk.” Silver Tones male vocalist Gene Bates joins the trio on classic numbers like “Kalamazoo” and “Accentuate the Positive,” and the four singers together do a smooth performance of The Temptations’ “My Girl,” with Bates on lead vocals. The Silver Belles vocal trio and Mr. Bates have travelled near and far to entertain smaller audiences at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. The vocalists sing to tracks of the Silver Tones recorded at a previous session and still create a wonderful musical memory for audiences. “Traveling with just vocalists is much easier than

assembling a 17-piece band. And smaller, more intimate audiences can still enjoy a live performance,” says Wendy Marie. Around the holidays, you can find the Silver Belles visiting individuals at Fauquier Rehabilitation Center or Brookside Nursing and Rehabilitation in Warrenton, going room to room to bring the joy of music to people who can’t come out to see the band. A mission of the Silver Tones has always been to support the military and war veterans. The Silver Belles have performed at multiple Honor Flights at airports and other locations. The Honor Flight Network’s mission is “to transport America’s veterans to Washington, D.C. to visit those memorials dedicated to honor the service and sacrifices of themselves and their friends.” The Silver Belles trio has volunteered their time to serenade American war heroes on multiple occasions, traveling to locations like Arlington, Harrisonburg, and Dulles and National airports, singing for veterans as they board or depart flights. Larke Pain recalls one Honor Flight performance by saying, “One of my most memorable gigs was singing for an Honor Flight. It was a rare opportunity to have some WWII vets among the group, and there was a gentleman with his escort and a cane coming slowly down the runway. When I asked if he wanted to dance, I thought it would be a slow shuffle, but instead, he threw his cane aside and swayed around the airport, singing “I’ve Heard that Song Before” in my ear all the while. The music just made the years melt away!” The Silver Tones members have also volunteered their time for countless

performances to raise money for music and arts programs in Fauquier County schools. Partnering with parent booster groups at Kettle Run, Liberty, and Fauquier High Schools, Silver Tones leadership worked closely to plan these fundraisers, and the combined efforts have raised over $15,000 to support the arts programs in Fauquier County schools. The next fundraiser swing dance is scheduled at Kettle Run High School on March 28, 2020, and the theme will be a Roaring ’20s gala dance to celebrate the 2020s. This dance will include a dance lesson at the start of the evening by swing instructor Valerie Pyle. Ms. Pyle, with dance partner Colin Hall, also teaches swing lessons on Tuesday nights in downtown Warrenton at Gloria’s on Main Street. Classes are hosted by Gottaswing (Gottaswing.com) and run in seven-week segments. Dance students learn the essential steps of swing dancing (also called Lindy Hop), which is great exercise and a lot of fun. During the fundraiser partnerships with the local schools, Silver Tones members mentor young musicians who are interested in playing jazz. Before each fundraiser, several high school students are hand-selected by their band director to sit in with the Silver Tones at three rehearsals. Students sit side-by-side with Silver Tones musicians and learn several

songs, which they perform live the night of the fundraiser dance. One of the young artists who participated in this mentorship program while in high school, Nick Furr from Fauquier High School, is now an active member of the Silver Tones as an adult and plays bari sax and tenor sax in the band. You can hear the Silver Tones live at many local venues, including the Highland School Center for the Arts, Allegro’s summer concert series in Warrenton, the National Sporting Library and Museum’s summer concert series, or area wineries. The band can also be hired for private events, such as weddings and birthday parties. Carrie Volkman, a bride who hired the band for her special day, recalls, “The Silver Tones Swing Band gave life to ‘the swing dance wedding from heaven,’ to quote one of my bridesmaids. Dave and Wendy were flexible and easy to work with in planning the playlist, up to coordinating the wedding and reception timeline. The band members were all professional, polite, and sharply dressed. I was nervous that a 19-person big band would overwhelm the guests in our medium-sized indoor ballroom, but Dave, Wendy, and the rest of the lovely band pulled it off beautifully. I could ask for nothing more.” Carrie and her husband Ron are active swing dancers who have followed the band for years. Silver Tones keyboardist, Katie Bryant, who works as an instructor at the Allegro Community School of the Arts, encourages everyone to come and support live music in our community. “Music is meant to be performed live. Before recording technology, music was always a social, community activity. I think the human interaction aspect is such an important part of the emotional impact that music can have. Members of the community should definitely come out and hear us and dance along, soaking up the energy that happens when great musicians play.” When Shuma was asked what his vision is for the band, he said, “I want the Silver Tones Swing Band to always be the band that causes feet to tap, folks to dance, and audiences to want more. If the audience leaves a gig with great tunes stuck in their head and fond memories in their heart, then the Silver Tones have done their job. The Silver Tones will always be the band for the people.” ❖ SILVERTONESSWINGBAND.COM

Beloved in Every Language Fauquier High School French teacher Nicole Goepper BY HANNAH SAMLALL

o matter how long it’s been since you were in school, it’s likely that you have a memorable teacher who made a considerable impact on your life. Did someone just come to mind? That’s the impact a great teacher can have on a student. This might be someone you still catch up with on a regular basis, or maybe they’re still one of your cheerleaders from afar. Either way, it’s no secret that teachers have a huge impact on communities, and the future of those communities. Fauquier High School is blessed to have one of “those” educators. Madame Nicole Goepper has been making an impact on students in Fauquier County since 1998. Goepper has taught at Fauquier High, Warrenton Middle, Taylor Middle, and Marshall Middle. She’s currently Head of the World Language Department at Fauquier High, the same school she graduated from years ago. Teaching wasn’t always at the forefront of her mind, though. First and foremost, it was always French. “I enjoyed international politics and was interested in the State Department side of things,” Goepper said. “My original goal was to be a diplomat for a French speaking country in Africa.” Goepper’s journey, and love of all things French, started at Fauquier High School. “I loved my French teacher at Fauquier,” Goepper said. “Her name is Chris Dorsey, and she still teaches French at Liberty High School today. Her class is where I found my love of French and why I decided to major in French in college.” After Fauquier, Goepper went on to attend James Madison University to major in International Affairs and French. During her time at JMU, she studied abroad in Martinique. “That’s where I really learned most of my French,” Goepper said. “I’ve always said to my kids, we can do all of these activities and you’ll feel comfortable speaking French, but won’t really be able to use it until you actually

go to France and immerse yourself in the language.” Goepper’s first job was teaching middle school in Montgomery County, MD. Eventually, she accepted a position at Fauquier High School, but stayed home for a few years after having her first child. She returned to teaching part-time at Warrenton, Taylor, and Marshall Middle Schools. Her focus at that time was building up the French program at Warrenton Middle School. “When I came back to teaching, I ended up taking middle schoolers to Quebec over spring break,” Goepper said. “We started seeing stuff about all of the winter activities like snowshoeing, cross country skiing, and dog sledding. I looked into trying to convince our superintendent that it was a wise decision to take 60 middle schoolers to Quebec in January.” The trip was a hit. There were between 60 and 70 kids on two charter buses, with plenty of parents in tow. “Kids starting signing up for French just to go on this trip,” Goepper said. “It’s become a tradition now. Jennifer Piercy took over the position at the school and has continued to carry on the tradition that is unique to Warrenton Middle School.” These days, you can find Goepper in Room 601 at Fauquier High, but the Fauquier HIgh Schol community might know her better as the woman always dancing in the courtyard. “I want the kids to have fun in French class because I want them to be passionate about French and be excited to come to class and to learn,” Goepper said. “Some of the dances we do are from French pop culture, but they’re all for educational purposes.” The dancing doesn’t come easy to everyone, though. “Some kids come in and are kind of apprehensive about getting out there and doing crazy dances in the middle of the courtyard,” Goepper said. “The younger ones are usually the ones that have the hardest time,

Madame Goepper’s goal is to immerse her students in French culture. She has accompanied students to both Quebec and France, hitting most of the highlights and incorporating some truly unique experiences along the way, including dogsledding in Canada -a huge hit with the kids.

but I love it when I hear things like ‘When we first started dancing, I felt so awkward and now it’s my favorite thing to do and my favorite part of the day.’” The recurring theme, though, is that Madame Goepper most enjoys taking the kids on trips to immerse them in the culture and language. Her husband, Chris Goepper, has become an enthusiastic sidekick and popular chaperone who accompanies her on most of her trips. “I came to high school and knew I wanted to take the kids to France,” Goepper said. “A few years in I took one class on a trip to Paris and to Southern France. It was a touristy trip. This coming spring, I’m taking a group of kids to Toulouse, which is where our sister school is. The kids will stay with exchange families for 5 days.” While trips across the pond are extremely educational and exciting for everyone involved, Goepper is also making waves right here at Fauquier. She recently launched a new course that’s currently running as a pilot class — Advanced Literature and Conversation. The course originally came out of a need. “With block scheduling, the last French class the kids could take was AP French the spring semester of their sophomore year. This left a gap of two years before they were able to take French again in college, a real disadvantage for kids who really love French.” Advanced Literature and Conversation was the solution. “There’s a curriculum, but it’s based on increasing speaking confidence, being able to read more complex literature and being able to analyze it,” Goepper said. “The curriculum is flexible. Last year, it came out the kids were really into Disney movies, so we did a whole unit on all of the chateaus in France. We read ‘Beauty and the Beast’ in French, and we watched the movie and had discussions about it.” Other topics the class has centered around were things like the World Cup when there were a group of soccer players in the class, and another semester was centered around Les Miserables. “It really is a passion-oriented class,” Goepper said. “We’re just also hitting pillars of conversation, having discussions, covering interpersonal speaking, and including reading and writing.” Goepper’s ultimate goal? “I want to get kids to love French here at Fauquier and hope that one day they’ll do a study abroad program,” Goepper said. “That makes me feel like I have achieved my goals for them.” Thank you for all you do, Madame Goepper! ❖

Entrenched in the Community: Remington native Stanley Heaney, Jr., of The Corner Deli and Century 21 New Millennium Real Estate BY PAM KAMPHUIS
“I
never really knew I loved Southern Fauquier County so much until I left,” said Stanley Heaney, realtor with Century 21 New Millennium and manager of the Corner Deli in Remington. “I lived in Northern Virginia for four years, and the whole time I was stressed out and couldn’t wait to come back to see the cornfields. There’s no sense of community there — you don’t know your neighbors like you do here, where everybody knows your name. Here, it takes you three hours to buy milk in the grocery store, because you run into everyone you know and have to stop and talk. And then you get stuck behind a tractor on your way home. I love this kind of community.” “I was born and raised here,” explained Heaney, whose parents moved to Remington and started the Corner Deli in 1988. The restaurant has always been a part of his life, with him starting out as a “greeter” and “helper” as a first grader, and progressing to manager at the age of 16. He is still involved in the family restaurant today, along with his career as a realtor, which, he said, results in 80-hour work weeks. Growing up in the restaurant business, Heaney believes, prepared him for his career as a realtor in that he grew up learning how to understand, communicate with, and help people. He also learned about — and liked — sales and business. He attended Liberty High School, and then George Mason University where he studied government, international politics, American politics, and business. Heaney received his real estate license in 2016, and loves selling real

I love driving the back roads and showing clients the rural areas, and then showing them how close they also are to the stores and the old towns, like Warrenton and Remington.” As entrenched in the community as he is, Heaney’s client base started out with family, friends, and friends of friends, and has taken off from there. Most of his sales to date have been land and residential properties in the Fauquier and Culpeper area, and the rural areas surrounding it.

“This is the perfect job for me,” Heaney explained. “I’ve seen a lot of really cool, unique properties while helping people search for their dream homes. I do a lot of land sales in the rural areas, and I get to go out in jeans and boots and walk the property and scope out homesites. It’s not just a desk job.” What does Heaney see in the future for his beloved Southern Fauquier County? “I see more growth coming,” he acknowledged. “There are cornfields disappearing, which is sad, but we are also seeing more services and infrastructure that were needed coming down here. We have more business, which brings more jobs, which is good. I’d like to see a balance, and I think we can do that. The southern end of the county has always had an agricultural tradition, and I think we’ll keep that. One of the biggest things we’ve got going for us is the agritourism with the wineries, which protect the land.” “I think in the next few years you’ll see a lot of real estate movement,” Heaney said. “Baby Boomers are going to be retiring and downsizing, maybe moving out of the area to the mountains or the beach, and Millennials are going to be buying houses and raising their families here. Residents of Northern Virginia may move out this way to retire in the more peaceful and rural environment. Business will be changing hands too, as the reins are passed to the next generations. So there will be a lot of movement, but not necessarily a lot more development. It’s a very interesting time for the Commonwealth; Northern Virginia is being developed at a breakneck speed, but around here we’re staying pretty steady.” ❖

Participating Organizations:
Keeping Fauquier Warm Fauquier Community Coalition Wood Ministry BY GARY CARROLL
O
n any given Saturday, if you drive behind Brumfield Elementary School in Warrenton, you will find men, women, and teens busily splitting and sawing donated wood and loading pickup trucks with firewood to be donated to local residents in need who depend on wood for their winter heat. This is the wood ministry of the Fauquier Community Coalition, started by Warrenton Baptist Church (WBC) some five years ago, which now includes volunteers from many other churches, non-profit organizations, and individuals in the county. Tom and Judy Williams have been organizing and supervising this volunteer effort for over three years. Tom, a former financial analyst for Lockheed-Martin, and his wife Judy, retired educator and principal of Grace Miller Elementary in Bealeton, use their leadership and management expertise and experience to ensure the ministry keeps running smoothly and effectively. Tom organizes and oversees the volunteer work and Judy is the “Wood Lady,” who interacts with clients, determines needs, and passes that information on to Tom. Sometimes this means she needs to be a comforting voice and an understanding listener to those who are dealing with difficult circumstances. She says her experience gained through her years as a school principal have assisted her on those occasions. Tom and Judy say the ministry is currently the sole provider of wood to some 20 families in central and southern Fauquier and last season made a total of 138 truckloads of deliveries, thanks to volunteers who logged 1,200 volunteer hours.

And it all started with prayer. Two members of Warrenton Baptist Church— Lynn Ward and Claiborne Crain—who were part of a prayer group at the church seeking ways to help less fortunate local residents, started by doing handyman work and fixing up substandard houses. In the process, they learned that many homes, especially in southern Fauquier, depended on firewood for wood stoves to meet their basic winter heating needs. Firewood was often not easy to find, and the cost was often prohibitive. Coincidentally, Warrenton Baptist had been gifted a plot of land just behind Brumfield Elementary School, and initially it was trees from the property that were felled and split and delivered to households in need. The local Department of Social Services began providing the church with information on prospective clients and, through word of mouth, other clients were found, vetted, and added to the list of recipients. Three years ago, as WBC began to recognize the full extent of the need in the county, the program expanded. St. James Episcopal Church became a partner, and together they decided to hold a work session every Friday on the Church woodlot and to alternate leadership of the work on alternate Saturdays throughout the year. Volunteers keep the ministry going. Wood is generously donated by local arborists and individual ministry supporters. Volunteers use donated gas-powered splitters and their own chainsaws to process the wood. These individuals have ranged in age from 5 to 85 years of age and have included local

Liberte, Warrenton Chapter Order of the Arrow church members, individuals, scouts, and representatives of non-profit organizations. The ministry also has partnered with the Points of Light Foundation to have a special one-day volunteer session for which they were rewarded with Disney World passes that can be sold to provide the ministry resources for further charitable work. This year’s one-day session brought in 84 volunteers working a total of 332 hours and completing 28 deliveries of wood. Proceeds from the sale of the Disney World passes will be used for housing repairs in Fauquier County and food relief for those in need in Ft. Liberte, Haiti. Tom Williams says the Ministry’s biggest need now is volunteers with pickup trucks to deliver wood, especially during weekdays. You may also provide support by donating to the Fauquier Community Coalition (501-3c non profit) or by emailing Tom at thomaswilliams05@comcast.net to volunteer or gain additional information. ❖

Sounds — and Sights — of the Season Warrenton United Methodist Church’s Living Christmas Tree is back after a one-year hiatus BY PAM KAMPHUIS
O
ne of the most beloved holiday traditions in Warrenton is back this year, to the delight of many families who have made Warrenton United Methodist Church’s Living Christmas Tree performance part of their yearly holiday customs. Much more than a church choir singing Christmas Carols, the Living Christmas Tree is a high energy, multisensory music, light, and action experience that will delight people of all ages. People come for the Christmas music, but are also captivated by the rest of the components of the performance. “There were a lot of disappointed people last year when we took a year off from the show,” said Tammy Wannemacher, WUMC member and Living Christmas Tree singer. The church, which concentrated on its 200 year anniversary instead of its annual performances, received a flood of crestfallen

communication in 2018. The LCT, originally envisioned by WUMC’s former Director of Music Rev. Richard E. Ford, has been delighting audiences since 2001 and is back this year under the able direction of Choir Director and Organist Peter Lewis. The show is centered around Christmas music performed by 50 singers. Accompanied by a 14-piece orchestra comprised of local and visiting instrumentalists, they perform a wide variety of holiday songs, from traditional carols to modern, Christian contemporary numbers. Visually, the show is a treat also. The singers are standing in a huge steel structure shaped and decorated like a Christmas tree, the focal point of the room. The performance is further enriched by a hightech light show, adding to the energy of the experience. Having amassed 98 performances under their belt since 2001, the huge production has become like

a well oiled machine due to the 60-80 volunteers that labor behind the scenes on 10 different work teams. They perform all kinds of services: setting up and taking down the tree, preparing and decorating the tree and sanctuary, and creating and running the light show. Additional volunteers provide meals to feed the week day work teams and weekend performers, to act as ushers during the performance, and to work behind — and even under — the massive tree during the shows. Rehearsals for the 50-60 singers start in September each year, and is open to all ages — the youngest this year is in the sixth grade, and there are members in their 80s climbing up onto the structure to sing. Though the majority of performers are WUMC members, anyone in the community is welcome to join. There are no auditions involved. “Anyone who has the heart for music and is willing to commit to the
performances is welcome,” explained Tammy. Alice West, LCT Coordinator for all 18 years added, “Well…they also need to be able to memorize their music, tolerate heights, and stand fairly still for an hour and a half!” The performances are held in the sanctuary at WUMC, which has the capacity to hold an audience of 350+. At 90 minutes long, the performance is suitable for children as young as pre-school age, and there is free child care available for families with younger children who would like to enjoy the experience without the distraction of little ones. You do need a ticket to attend, but general admission tickets are free and available on a first come first served basis, with the doors opening 45 minutes before each performance. New this year is the option to purchase select tickets for $10 which guarantee a seat in a reserved section providing a great view of the show. Proceeds from ticket sales, along with a collection at each show, will go toward defraying the cost of the production after ten percent is given to this year’s charity, the Fauquier Community Coalition. “The LCT is a very communityoriented event,” explained Tammy. “We want to bring forth our message of what Christmas is all about, and we also want to give back.” ❖ PERFORMANCE SCHEDULE Thursday, December 12 at 7:30 p.m. Friday, December 13 at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, December 14 at 4 & 7 p.m. Sunday, December 15 at 4 & 7 p.m. LOCATION Warrenton United Methodist Church 341 Church Street, Warrenton Tickets and information 540-347-1367, ext. 125 Lct2019.org facebook.com/lctwarrenton2019

The holiday family favorite and treasured ballet is back: Don’t miss Centre Company’s The Nutcracker BY BETH LUNA
I
t is Christmas Eve, and the party guests begin to arrive. The tree is lit, the dancing begins, the chef prepares a holiday dinner and treats, and everyone is in a festive mood. The scene is set for The Nutcracker, the treasured ballet and family holiday favorite. The Centre Performing Arts Company, the non-profit affiliate of Lasley Centre for the Performing Arts in Vint Hill, presents their rendition of this classic, full-length production for three shows December 7 and 8. One of the ballet world’s brightest stars, American Ballet Theatre (ABT) Principal Dancer Cory Stearns, returns for the second year to dance the parts of both Cavalier and the Nutcracker. “Cory is not only a beautiful and
artistic dancer at one of the world’s top ballet companies, but also an extraordinary person,” said Artistic Director Kalie Lasley. “His kindness with our students, parents and faculty make for a wonderful experience for everyone involved, and what an amazing treat for the audience to have him dance here locally.” Born on Long Island, New York, Cory Stearns began his classical training at the age of five with Mme. Valia Seiskaya at the Seiskaya Ballet. At fifteen, he participated in the Youth America Grand Prix ballet competition and was offered a full scholarship to The Royal Ballet School in London, one of the top programs in the world. Stearns performed in Madrid, Moscow, Milan, Düsseldorf and London while at The Royal, graduating with honors. Stearns joined the American Ballet Theatre Studio Company in September 2004, the main Company as an apprentice in January 2005, and became a member of the corps de ballet in January 2006. He was appointed a Soloist in January 2009 and a Principal Dancer in January 2011. His repertoire includes the top ballet roles for male dancers from the classics and beyond. As with last year’s production, the Sugar Plum Fairy is danced by former Lasley student and current Orlando Ballet trainee Julia Carlson of Warrenton. Other casting includes Samantha Dumais of Gainesville as Clara, Annabelle Luna of Nokesville as Snow Queen and Flower Soloist, Lasley
Ballet Master Mark Rubin as Drosselmeyer, and Elly-Anne Chavez of Warrenton as Naughty Mouse. There is an interesting connection between Lasley Centre and this ballet -The Nutcracker premiered in Russia in 1892 but was first performed in the United States in 1944 by the San Francisco Ballet, the same company that Ms. Lasley danced with in her days as a professional ballet dancer. The magic of The Nutcracker is a wonderful introduction to the arts for younger children and those new to ballet or live performance in general. The lovely dream sequence in The Land of Sweets, the gorgeous, colorful costumes, and the recognizable score by Tchaikovsky speak to all ages, and it is the Company’s hope that their production will continue to be a cherished tradition for area families. Even those with very young children are encouraged to attend and share the experience. Local mother of three daughters Sylvia Updegraff attended several Nutcrackers in the region in search of a ballet studio for her family, settling on Lasley Centre for the Performing Arts because of the quality of the presentation. “There is amazing production value with this Nutcracker,” she said. “The choreography, costumes and level of dancing are top-notch. This is the perfect familyfriendly way to enjoy a beautiful production of The Nutcracker!” ❖

HOLIDAY traditions What’s your favorite custom that you do every year to celebrate the season? Local families shared theirs with us. BY FRANNIE BARNES
M
erriam Webster defines tradition as “An inherited, established, or customary pattern of thought, action or behavior.” And if you ask any of your friends what their holiday traditions are, you’ll might find some you share, and some that are completely different. Via Facebook, we asked the Lifestyle community “What are your family’s favorite holiday traditions?” and were overwhelmed by the number of responses. Thank you to the many who replied. We hope that by sharing these special customs here, you’ll be inspired to keep your own traditions alive and maybe even create some new ones!
brisket, and matzah ball soup among many other delicious items. During Rosh Hashanah, we enjoy eating apples dipped in honey, which is a symbol of a wish for a sweet new year. Hanukkah is not one of our high holidays, but the Festival of Lights and the tradition of giving gifts for each of the holiday’s eight nights and lighting the menorah, is important to us.”

PAJAMA GAME “Our kids make PJs for each other as their Christmas gift. We buy fun pants and decorate t-shirts with fun paint and alternate the receiver each year.” — STEPHANIE LEX, GAINESVILLE
HERITAGE-INSPIRED TRADITIONS “In our home, our traditions are centered around family and food. My parents typically drive in from Ohio, my sister and her family come over, and we all enjoy a big traditional dinner. We enjoy challah bread, which we make from scratch,

BLENDED FAMILIES = CREATIVE TRADITIONS “We move the entire Christmas celebration, Christmas Eve, Christmas morning, Santa Claus, Christmas dinner, the whole thing, a few days forward or back around the boys' mom's family's celebrations on the 24th and the 25th. That way the boys don't miss all the celebrations and traditions with their cousins on that side, and we get the full experience also. We leave cookies for Santa, read The Night Before Christmas, all of it. We’ve been very fortunate that Santa cooperated and made a special trip for them! Now that
FLOUR FIGHT “In our house, it’s all about the annual flour fight. It’s our favorite family tradition. We start out really, truly making cookies but before you know it, one child tosses flour at the other and the games have begun! As the mom, you might think I’d stay out of it. But oh no, I’m right in the mix.” — SANDRA PACKWOOD, WARRENTON

DIG FOR THE PIG
COFFEE TALK
“We have a Danish tradition of finding the almond in the rice pudding at Christmas Eve dinner. Whoever finds it, gets the marzipan pig which is supposed to bring good luck for the New Year.”
“My mom, sister, brother and I all make a coffee cake Christmas morning. My mom got the recipe from a friend who brought it over after my brother was born 43 years ago – she froze it and served it on Christmas Day. I can’t imagine a Christmas morning without it. Even when we travel for the holiday, I make one there.”
— JESSICA BUHL, GAINESVILLE

— KRISTEN FISHER, GAINESVILLE
LIGHT IT UP “Our family loves to look at Christmas lights in various neighborhoods. We add a little flavor and compete for who can find the most mangers by yelling ‘Manger alert!’’
SANTA MOUSE LOVE IS IN THE CARDS “Our family makes homemade cards to go with our gifts, which have a $25 limit. We usually end up crying at someone’s card because they’re so sweet. It’s really a way for each of us to remind the other how special they are. We have 10 years’ worth of cards now!”
THE SOUNDS OF MUSIC
GOOD THINGS COME IN SMALL BOXES “On Christmas Eve morning, our daughter wakes up to her ‘Christmas Eve’ box filled with little surprises and hints of things we’re going to do that evening. Things like a special movie, hot chocolate, and her special Christmas mug.”

“My husband and I make a big pot of Gluhwein, a warm mulled wine served in German Christmas markets, on the last night of November. We put the kids to bed, finally switch over to Christmas music, and spend the evening decorating the entire house for Christmas. We have fun pulling out decorations and ornaments and remembering past holiday stories together. And the good thing about the Gluhwein is that it has an extra kick of rum and it makes the whole house smell like fall/ winter spices as it simmers on the stove.”

Haymarket Rotary Club. We also sponsor a child in Foster Care. Christmas is about kids, and it’s important to do something nice for those that might not otherwise get to celebrate.”
“On Christmas morning, our kids find a small gift in the branches of the tree left by ‘Santa Mouse’ — the littleknown tiny mouse who travels with Santa and is known through the book Santa Mouse by Michael Brown. The gift is an ornament that reflects something the kids have done that year that they can keep for when they have their own families. And every Christmas Eve, we leave a piece of cheese next to the cookies and milk for Santa for Santa Mouse.” — ELLA SCHUYLER, MARSHALL
TRADITIONS FROM THE OLD WORLD “My husband is from Holland, so in our house we celebrate St. Nicholas Day on December 5. For four days, the kids leave their shoes by the fireplace before bed, and in the morning find a very small gift accompanied by a little poem from St. Nicholas in their shoe. On the fifth day, Dec. 5, the

OVER AND OVER “As a dancer from a young age, my daughter performed in The Nutcracker every year and I was a backstage mom. So the sights and sounds of the performance became part of the season for us from early November through Christmas. Even though the dancers got so tired of the music that they heard year after year that they started rehearsing with counts alone, I never did. Watching her grow up and dance a new role every year, from a little girl with her class trying so hard to be in sync with each other as Chinese dancers, to a Spanish dancer when she was a little older, to a Russian dancer when she started to get good, and in Waltz of the Snowflakes and Waltz of the Flowers as a senior member of the company is one of my most treasured memories. Now that she’s grown and not dancing anymore, she and I try to catch The Nutcracker somewhere every year. “ — MARY ANN PERRIN, WARRENTON

the marvelous MR. WHITE A local man’s story of embracing forgiveness and living life to the fullest
STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
I
f there is any takeaway from the life Lee Thomas White has lived, it is to live to the fullest, without anger, and without fear of getting old. He turned 92 last month; being born on Thanksgiving Day in 1927 earned him the name Tom because his mother says she got him instead of a turkey. Tom’s soul has a lightness and his personality a playfulness of someone more in the prime of life. But that’s what’s endearing about this kind man with bright blue eyes. He is living his best life at his age, while wearing his best clothes, in Fauquier Nursing and Rehabilitation with his best friends, and with stepdaughter Sharon Wiggins as his best advocate. During the 45-year marriage to Sharon’s mother, Tom treated his wife with kindness and respect. Sharon says, “He was quiet, never drank, never smoked, and nothing got under his skin.” After her mom passed away, Sharon would meet with Tom for occasional dinners and chats on the phone on holidays and birthdays. But then for four years, they lost touch. In November of 2017, when Sharon tried to arrange a visit with him, she couldn’t find him at his last residence. From there, the rescue mission began. Sharon found Tom at a hospital in Charlottesville where he had been for a month and a half. He was malnourished, missing his teeth, and suffering from a severe skin infection… alone and hopeless. His shoes had holes in them and he had nothing but the clothes on his body. The hospital had no one to take responsibility for him and would be releasing him to a homeless shelter as there was not a medical reason for his continued stay. Sharon took action immediately: she went shopping for new pajamas, socks, slippers, and necessities and brought him food that he asked for. When she visited him every weekend, she told him he had to get stronger so that she could bring him to her home. His body was so weak, he had difficulty getting from his chair to the bed. He began using the floor pedal machine Sharon brought him and gained more and more strength until he could walk unassisted. Sharon thought about the fond memories she had of how Tom had treated her mother, so she knew she couldn’t let anything happen to him. He was kind and

loving and did not harbor any anger towards the people who caused him to be in this dire situation. Sharon accepted responsibility for Tom, took him to get identification, Medicare, his social security card, and started helping his reclaim his life in her care. With the proper nutrition and medication, Tom’s health, both mental and physical, began to improve. After he fell ill with another infection, Sharon thought she would lose him. The hospital did all they could but sent him to a nursing home with not much hope. But he got stronger again and then came back to live with her. Although living with Sharon made Tom happy, he is a very social person and loves to talk and socialize. Since Sharon works full-time, he was alone most of the day. Tom also likes to be active, needs to be reminded to take his medicine, and had to wear an alarm so he wouldn’t walk away from the house and get lost. Sharon says she had no idea what to so she prayed and prayed for the right solution. She asked God to help her keep Tom close and safe. The solution came along “by the grace and hand of God and a little help from influential friends,” says Sharon. For the last year and a half, Tom has resided very happily at Fauquier Nursing and Rehabilitation on Hospital Hill in Warrenton. He has many friends, especially the ladies, and the nurses adore him. It’s easy to see why. Being the only able-bodied resident at a nursing home has Tom in a unique position that perfectly fits his giving soul. He helps all the other residents, pushing them in their wheelchairs or helping put bibs on them at dinner time. He assists one resident by filling her humidifier with water and finds other ways to contribute.

Above, clockwise from left: Tom and Sharon; Tom as an honorary judge at the Warrenton Car Show; Tom as Santa, and Tom “on the road again” on the zero-turn mower Sharon bought for him.
A first impression of Tom would begin with his attire. Each and every day, he dresses himself up. In his room is an assortment of ties, suspenders, dress pants, button down shirts, suits, and sport coats. When asked why he does this, Tom says, “because it makes me feel different… it makes me feel better.” What someone might not realize immediately is how smart Tom is. The activity staff at Fauquier Nursing and Rehab had to ask Tom to count to the number 11 before answering a question at trivia to give the other residents a chance to get one right. He is too smart for his own good, they say. A genius, he says. Tom loves to be occupied. He wears a post office hat Sharon bought him to deliver all the mail for the nursing home. The hat makes him feel more official and lets the residents know why this dressed up man is bringing them things. Tom’s sense of humor is alive and well. He is always making people laugh and cracking jokes. But he is a real gentleman. If you visit him, he will insist on walking you out. He will jump up to open the door for anyone. His forgiving soul is evident in the way he talks about his past. Although he will tell you he was “granny dumped,” there is still a smile on his face. He didn’t even want the

people who abandoned him to be punished. When asked where he would be without Sharon, Tom says he would probably be in a homeless shelter or worse. “I just love her to death; she rescued me from hell,” he says. Ever so grateful for the little things, he deeply appreciates the three hot meals a day and a warm bed to sleep in at Fauquier Nursing and Rehab. “Everyone is so, so good to me,” he says. When he is told of the impact his story has on those who meet him, he seems almost surprised. He is as humble as they come. An event he really enjoyed was dressing up as Santa at Mountain Ridge Church, although he is still puzzled parents trust an old man dressed in a Santa suit to hold their babies. Tom made such a great Santa that Sharon submitted a photo of Tom drinking a coke as Santa to McClanahan Camera’s photo contest last year and he won! Tom is going to be an Honorary Judge at the Warrenton Car Show for the second year in a row. His face lights up when he talks about the Corvettes he will be judging, and tells a story about the first Corvette he bought for $6,900 back in the day. One more lesson readers can take from this story is how to treat those we love. There are stories after stories of ways Sharon has helped Tom to regain some of his self-
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
esteem. He can’t drive a car, so she bought him a lawn mower, then made a video of him riding it and posted it online to the tune of the Willie Nelson song On the Road Again. She had the Warrenton Barbershop Quartet come to the nursing home to sing happy birthday to him when he turned 91. She rented a limo to take him to see Christmas lights one year. There are too many kind gestures to include here. He has gained quite a following on social media since his rescue in 2017. The community has rallied around him, and Sharon’s friends are quick to help out also. One paid for Tom’s dentures. Others take him for outings, bring him gifts, and help celebrate important milestones. “He has a reason to live now; he has his identity and self-esteem back; he is wellnourished and feels safe in the nursing home; and all love him that meet him,” says Sharon. There are so many years of life before Sharon and Tom crossed paths. Tom was a pilot, model, body builder, restaurant owner, and so much more. His stories go on and on about his adventures in his earlier years. But it seems that his golden years will be spent with those who mean the most and those who love him best. While she’s always been a caring person, her experiences with Tom have taught Sharon to be even more compassionate and forgiving. Tom fits right in with her life but adds a loving family relationship to it. “He is grateful and a very good man. I am sure my mom is looking down on us and finally smiling,” she says. ❖

ONE ACT OF KINDNESS SETS IN MOTION A RIPPLE EFFECT OF COMMUNITY ASSISTANCE FOR A BROAD RUN RESIDENT BY FRANNIE BARNES

Would you know if someone living near you was in need of assistance? It might come as a surprise, but there are members of our community who have ‘fallen off the radar’ and need help. Unfortunately, many people don’t know how to ask for help, or are too proud to. But during this season of giving it’s good to be reminded that our simple acts of kindness can cause ripples of change for others. On December 25, 2018, Carla Vergot and her husband Rick were headed to the Bull Run Mountains Conservancy for their traditional Christmas Day hike, when their day took an unexpected turn that would forever change many people’s lives. As they drove down Beverly Mill Drive, a man stumbled into the road and almost fell in front of their car. Carla could tell the gentleman was unsteady and got out to check on him. That is when she met Tom Davenport, a legally blind Broad Run resident who’s spent the last two years living alone. Despite the fact that Tom went for a walk daily, he had a hard time that particular day and it seemed fate intervened when Carla and Rick passed him. Tom thanked Carla for helping to walk him home and as they talked, she learned he had been living alone and as of late, struggling to keep on top of his mail due to his vision loss. In fact, he expressed concern that he needed to sign some legal documents, but wasn’t sure which line to sign. Carla offered to come back at a later date to help him go through the documents. This one simple act of kindness became the catalyst for a much larger, community-based effort to help a neighbor in need. Tom is a U.S. Navy veteran who served as a Surface Line Officer. He is also an accomplished academic, with a bachelor’s degree in economics and a master’s in urban studies. He has worked in the private sector for Radio Shack and the Washington Metro Transit Authority. It is fair to say the rigors of his career demanded good vision. On July 5, 2016, while working as a station manager for Metro, an object hit his eye which caused clouding at first. Thinking he had a cataract, he began to lose vision in the one eye. He was diagnosed with optic neuropathy. He went on short term disability and later had to quit his job. (Although he reported his injury and had been on disability, there was little to no follow up after.) He was later declared legally blind, although he thankfully he can see shadows and some shapes. His wife had been ill, and was moved to a medical facility in Staunton, leaving Tom living alone. For over two years, he lived with his compromised vision, making do as he could. He took Ubers to the

grocery store and was always met with compassion. He fondly shared how the produce manager at the nearby Food Lion would greet him with a hug and help him shop for groceries. But as time went on, his mail piled up, and staying on top of household chores became increasingly challenging. By December 2018, he needed help. During Carla’s visit with Tom after Christmas, it quickly became apparent the legal documents that needed attention were out of her purview, and were only a small part of the big picture. He also needed help with other challenges. Carla started the ball rolling. She arranged for a cleaning crew to clean and organize Tom’s kitchen, which she felt was an immediate need. She also took Tom’s dog Midnight to the vet for a check-up and the vet donated the needed shots, supplements, and care. While helping with the mail, she noticed that Tom and his wife of 27 years were Catholic, so she reached out to St. Stephen the Martyr parish in Middleburg to see if they could assist. She contacted the Pastor, Father Christopher Murphy, who consulted with the Legion of Mary. The Legion of Mary (LoM) is a group of parishioners dedicated to visiting the homebound. Several members of the LoM are very experienced in helping the homebound as they’ve had careers in social work. Carol Kardash is a nurse and former case manager for a large health care company
“TOM IS A DELIGHTFUL PERSON. WE WONDERED FOR MANY MONTHS AFTER MEETING HIM, ‘HOW MANY TOMS ARE OUT THERE WHO ARE BEING OVERLOOKED AND NEED HELP?” and Margie Bocchichio is a former case manager for Fairfax County Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA). This experience was especially helpful as they knew how to apply for HIPPA advocacy which would later expedite arranging Tom’s medical appointments. This was an important missing piece for Tom – having an advocate to help him navigate medical appointments and legal documents. When Carol and Margie visited Tom’s home to assess the situation they quickly saw that living alone with limited sight presented several issues requiring attention. “Everyone had great ideas, but finding the right organization to gather this information to move forward [was the challenge],” Margie said. Tom’s safety was deemed priority number one. His faithful companion, Midnight, as well as a house cat, were also of concern. Over time, and with much convincing, they were able to eventually get Tom to accept grace from community members and rehome the animals where they could best be served. Margie took Tom grocery shopping; cleaning crews donated their time and resources to clean the entire house. Food drives were held to ensure Tom could receive food without the hassle and money spent getting Ubers to take him out, and entire meals were cooked and delivered. Another LoM volunteer took all of Tom’s clothes to a laundry facility in Manassas, while another rearranged his furniture to make it easier for him to move around his home. The kindness displayed by community members was overwhelming. Margie also contacted the St. Katharine Drexel Mission Knights of Columbus Council #16793 who gathered a group of volunteers to do the ‘heavy lifting.’ They brought in Serve Pro to assess the home to check for safety issues. In April 2019, volunteers from the Knights of Columbus began working on the outside of Tom’s home. In July, 27 men worked for five hours sawing tree limbs and clearing brush. Margie contacted the Office of Veteran’s Affairs to inquire into what assistance they could provide. And Margie and Carol met with the Virginia Department for the Blind and Visually Impaired, who discussed the option of a seven-month program in Richmond at the VA Vocational Rehabilitation Center. This program can assist Tom by teaching him to better cope with the challenges of blindness,

and train him to get an appropriate job given his impaired vision. And that is exactly what Tom wants, to be back at a job working with and surrounded by people. Tom’s acceptance into the program is conditional on medical independence. Margie and the other LoM members organized various medical appointments to make sure he qualified, which centered around sleep studies and his use of a CPAP machine, his knee brace, and a sudden, unexpected bout with appendicitis shortly before the paperwork was complete. Now healthy, Tom is currently in the final stage of approval for the program, and is hopeful to begin soon. Finally, in addition to Tom’s own immediate medical needs, Margie and the LoM were able to arrange for Tom’s wife to be moved to a closer facility in Warrenton, making it easier for him to visit her. Tom has re-joined the church and now attends St. Katharine Drexel Mission in Haymarket. Margie’s husband, a member of the Knights of Columbus, regularly drives Tom to Mass now, and he joins in the parish men’s choir practice. “Tom is a very social person who has maintained his sense of humor the entire time. He has a lot of gratitude, and is very glad to be involved in the community again and not so isolated.” Margie said. “Tom is a delightful person. We wondered for many months after meeting him, ‘How many Toms are out there who are being overlooked and need help?” Carla said. “When you walk past a person or greet someone, know that there is a story there. By simply asking, ‘What can I do for you? Is there anything you need?’ you might be able to help. And the need may be simple, such as opening the mail,” Margie said. From a fateful drive on Christmas morning, one person began a movement in our community. Over the past 11 months, nearly 60 people have volunteered their time, resources, food, and services to help a neighbor in need. “This is a great example of what is happening in our community,” said Father Murphy. “It has been wonderful. It really restores your faith in humanity when you see how much good people will do. I can’t thank them enough. They’ve changed my life,” Tom said. ❖

Home for the Holidays...Again! THIS YEAR’S PEEK INTO WARRENTON DESIGNER AMY BOYLE’S HOLIDAY HOME
PHOTOS BY AMY BOYLE
O
nce again for our holiday issue, 11 Magnolia Lane design blogger Amy Boyle of Warrenton is sharing her holiday decor with us. Amy, using just a few standard staples from year to year, creates a whole new holiday look every year to keep her blog fresh for her followers. With three children, her challenge is creating a festive and magical environment for gorgeous photos for the blog that is also livable for her family. Her home itself is done in a neutral color scheme, which allows her to play with all sorts of different colors for the holiday season; she especially likes the festivity of gold and silver metallics, but this year is incorporating a little of the more traditional reds and greens also. She’s always keeping her eye out for unique items that spark her creativity and that she can develop a theme around, usually using her favorite design elements of ribbon and greenery in the process. The outcome of all her efforts is no small feat — with multiple Christmas trees and almost every room decorated — and a peek into Amy’s house is like an entry into a holiday wonderland. Tourtiere FRENCH MEAT PIE BY PAM KAMPHUIS, RECIPE BY PAT BLAIS
T
hough not a traditional Christmas dish in the south, I asked my mother for this recipe to include in our holiday issue. A prolific (and excellent) cook, my mother started experimenting with this savory, traditional FrenchCanadian Christmas pie when she married my stepfather, who was of French-Canadian descent in a family with a strong adherence to cultural traditions. In other words, there simply was no Christmas without Tourtiere. Tourtiere is a meat pie originating from the Quebec province of Canada. It has become popular in the New England region, where I grew up, due to the migration of French-Canadians over the border in past generations. There is no one correct recipe; historically the meat used depended on whatever was readily available, from pork to beef to rabbit to other game. My mother adapted the recipe to include crushed Ritz crackers, which gives it a rich, buttery taste. It is delicious fresh out of the oven, and as a leftover, either hot or cold. As an option for (or a complement to) the traditional turkey served in the U.S., it has become a mouth-watering flavor of the holidays for me. And it’s even easy enough for me to make it myself! INGREDIENTS
DIRECTIONS
1 lb. ground beef 1 lb. ground pork ¼ tsp. sugar 1 tsp. poultry seasoning Salt and pepper to taste ½ cup finely chopped onion ½ cup finely chopped celery ¾+ cup Ritz cracker crumbs Double pie crust (homemade or store-bought)
1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees 2. Process Ritz crackers in a food processor until they are finely crumbled 3. Combine beef, pork, salt, pepper, and sugar and mix well. Place in a pot with about 3/4 cup of water. 4. Cook slowly over medium heat until thoroughly browned, stirring often to blend the

meats thoroughly, about 20 minutes. 5. Add the poultry seasoning. May add more to taste. 6. Drain about half, but not all, of the liquid. 7. Sauté onion and celery in butter until soft but not browned. Add to meat mixture. 8. Add ¾ cup of the Ritz cracker crumbs to bind the meat together and to absorb the remaining liquid. Combine well.
Add more crumbs gradually if necessary until mixture is not soupy. 9. Adjust seasonings to taste. 10. Line a 9-inch pie plate with the bottom crust, fill the pie, and cover with the remaining crust. Crimp the edges and brush with egg wash. 11. Bake at 375 degrees until crust is browned, about a half hour. 12. Serve with your choice of fruit chutney.

Essentials to Adorn a Holiday Grazing Table RECOMMENDATIONS ON CHEESE BOARDS, CHARCUTERIE, AND SPREADS AND DIPS BY NATALIE ORTIZ
T
he holidays are a time for sumptuous feasts, and one of the best things about holiday parties is the assortment of appetizers — all of the different flavor and texture combinations to delight your senses. Whether you’re having a holiday open house or a full-on sit down meal, you’ll want to have some options for your guests to nibble on while they enjoy a glass of wine or a cocktail. A beautiful grazing tablescape is the modern version of the passed or plated hors d'oeuvres of the past. These displays are often presented on a large round or long table in the center of a room and are truly the way to go as the set up encourages guests to mingle, linger, and spread holiday cheer. There are three things that are absolute must-haves to make a complete and interesting grazing table: charcuterie boards, cheese platters, and flavorful spreads or dips. This trio of options is a smart choice in an already busy time of year as they require little to no cooking and all selections, including the cheeses, can be served at room temperature leaving you free to spend time enjoying your guests. What helps turns the grazing table into an aesthetic delight are the accompaniments and edible garnishes — they are a great way to highlight the best of what’s available locally and seasonally while adding color and flavor.
C L A S S I C :
Cheese Boards Think of a cheese board as an artist’s palette- different textures, flavors, and milk varieties will spark curiosity and a selection of colorful accompaniments will embolden your guests to try something new. You’ll want to plan for about 3 to 4 ounces of cheese per guest and about four to six different varieties to ensure you’ll have something to please everyone. To make it easy (because one can be overcome with analysis paralysis when standing in the cheese section), I’ve shared some combinations of cheeses that are sure to be a success. Don’t fear if you can’t find the exact variety, just ask your cheesemonger to assist in making a substitution of something similar.

Spreads and Dips No grazing table would be complete without these! Plan on offering three to five options for your guests, and vary the flavor profiles. I’ve included three recipes that are sure to be a hit at your holiday party.
SUN DRIED TOMATO JAM WITH RICOTTA I N G R E D I E N T S
1 cup sugar 1¼ cups white Balsamic vinegar 12 oz. sun dried tomato strips, diced (dry, not oil packed) Whole milk high-quality ricotta cheese
Charcuterie Charcuterie, which is enjoying a revival recently, was actually a way of preserving meat products before modern refrigeration. There are several categories that fall under charcuterie: salted meats, forcemeats (ground lean meat emulsified with fat and seasonings), cured sausages (forcemeats encased in synthetic or natural tubing and then are cooked and cured), rillettes (salted meat that is cooked to render the fat and soften the meat resulting in a paste-like spread), pâté (ground meat, usually duck or chicken liver, that is heavily seasoned, put into a vessel, and then cooked in a water bath), terrines (similar to pâté but with a more coarse texture), and mousses (similar to a pâté but a lighter, silkier texture obtained by adding cream, eggs, or incorporating more air).

1.
Place creme fraîche, smoked salmon, and cream cheese into the bowl of a food processor. Pulse until a mousse-like consistency forms. Add dill and pulse a few times to incorporate. Serve in a bowl or pipe onto individual crackers just before serving.

3.
Place all items in a heavy bottomed saucepan and bring to a boil. Reduce heat to low and simmer until thickened. Remove from heat, cool until safe enough to handle and with an immersion blender, blend until desired texture is achieved. Because this will be paired with a smooth ricotta, I like to leave the jam with chunks of sundried tomatoes to vary the texture. Serve at a ricotta to jam ratio of 2:1

Add olives and chickpeas to the bowl of a food processor. Pulse several times, just enough to ensure a uniform size on all items. Do not purée; mixture should be chunky. Drizzle just enough olive oil to coat the pieces and mix gently by hand. Serve in a bowl, garnished with parsley.
