ebruary has come around again, and it’s time for our pet issue. This is my favorite issue of the year, when we announce the winners of our Cutest Pet Contest (a big thank you to our sponsor, Piedmont Pets). I am a dog lover, always have been. At one time, we had four – or was it five – dogs, which was fine at the time, but not so much anymore. Now we’re very happily down to one, our Border Collie, Riley. To say he is spoiled is a gross understatement. He doesn’t eat dog food, he eats boiled chicken and rice. And he gets a treat (a denta-stick for healthy teeth) after every meal without fail. Any misstep or scratch of an ear means an immediate vet trip. He is immediately let out when he wants to go out, and immediately let in when he wants to come in. He goes in and out many times during the evenings that it borders on insanity. Either his, or ours, I’m not sure. But he’s a part of our family and has given us so much joy over the years, and, at 15, he’s not getting any younger. So we gladly spoil him. When interviewing our winners, we found that love and joy we find in our pets echoed through their stories as well. Happiness, smiles, best friend, and family are words they all used often when describing their pets. I bet these pets are spoiled too. Congratulations to our winner, Lucy, and to Indy and our unique entry Pancetta, and thank you all who entered and all who voted in the contest and helped make it such a success.

Builder for Life Golden Rule Builders designs and builds homes around lifestyles BY PAM KAMPHUIS

he world has changed, and is still changing, and Golden Rule Builders is growing with the times and using home design to make their clients’ lives easier and more comfortable. Starting out in 1987 with two employees building spec houses, the company then moved to custom homes after the crash of 1989, and then on to design-and-build homes and remodeling. With a staff of about 30 today, the company has become a one-stop-shop for top-quality homebuilding, streamlining the process from

beginning to end: initial concept, estimating, architecture and design, production, and then warranty. Golden Rule Builders was founded by owner and CEO Joel Barkman who followed a Christian book ministry from rural Ohio to Fauquier County in 1986, and never left. “I love Fauquier County, I think it’s the best county in Virginia because you’re right next to the mountains, but also the big city. I grew up on a farm, so I love that it’s agricultural, and I love that there are a lot of unique folk here.”

Barkman and his wife Patty made their home in Catlett and raised five homeschooled children. Adults now, three of them work in the family business. Community service is as big a part of Barkman’s life as it ever was, with long term involvement in his local church and serving on the boards of both Fauquier Health and Lord Fairfax Community College. “I want to give back to the people who have welcomed us into this community and made our lives so rich. everything I have was given to me and I feel liking giving back is a necessary element.” Barkman’s choice of name for his company reflects his Christian beliefs. “I wanted a name that spoke to the values we hold, and the golden rule, do unto others as you would have others do unto you, seemed to fit well. I wanted a name that would remind me of that.” Golden Rule Builders lists more than ten awards and accolades on its website, from magazines to building organizations. But Barkman is prouder of the accomplishments that are made by his employees as a team rather than those honoring him personally. “We won an award for a green and universal design for an older gentleman whose wife had passed away. He had us design and build the house exactly the way she would have wanted it. It wasn’t a beautiful house, but the functionality was amazing. That took some teamwork. And the owner is delighted with his home.” Another proud moment came in 2020 when Golden Rule Builders was chosen by the Gary Sinise Foundation to build a home for a disabled veteran. They built a completely “smart home” with full accessibility for the disabled veteran,
enabling the active young family to function more normally. “We felt very honored to be selected, to be able to work with the Foundation, and to give back to the veteran and his family,” says Barkman A big asset for the company is their design center and showroom. Clients are able to browse and select their home options right in one place, with experts nearby to advise and guide as needed. Barkman says, “It’s really been a life-changer for the client’s experience and makes the whole process more efficient on all sides.” “I take great joy in improving people’s lives by design,” says Barkman. One thing he always mentions during a consultation with his clients is “Universal Design,” or aging in place options. “It’s something we always bring up in our design phase; we try to get people to understand that as they grow older the design of the home can make a big difference in their ability to stay in place,” he concludes. A newer line for Golden Rule Builders is their Golden Rule Lifestyle line of homes, which is more focused on millennials who don’t want to go through a long design and build process. “This is a little more of your
standard home that we can tailor to make it more efficient and economy minded,” Barkman explains, “but at the same time clients can be assured of the quality of Golden Rule.” As with all companies, COVID-19 has affected Golden Rule as well, in this case making them even busier. Barkman says, “Clients are at home and realizing that the housing market is still behind so it’s been really a gangbuster year for us. We work hard, and pray hard to keep everyone safe and healthy. We’ve been able to surge ahead this year.” Another effect of COVID-19? An increasing remodeling trend for Golden Rule. Barkman says, “Sometimes I have a virtual meeting with a client, and I can see that they’re in their kitchen or bedroom on their computer. COVID-19 has changed the way people live; kids are spending more time at home schooling virtually, and both Mom and Dad might also be working at home full time. The design of some homes is just not sustainable in the long term for those purposes. We can help with that.” ❖ GOLDENRULEBUILDERS.COM

FO U N TA I N S PULLING FROM ROCK AND JAZZ, FAUQUIER MUSICIANS REACH ACROSS GENRES

f you live in or around Warrenton and enjoy frequenting favorite local spots like Molly’s, Powers Farm & Brewery, or Denim & Pearls, you may have heard the music of Fountains. Founded in 2019 after musicians Sean Stanton and Chris Drerenberger broke from their previous band The Bottle Shop, Fountains plays both originals and a curated list of covers from artists like the Beatles, Fleet Foxes, Steve Winwood, Foo Fighters, Kings of Leon and many more. Sean (vocals/guitar/keyboard), Chris (bass), and drummer Blayne Laures are planted in the area — writing music, safely rehearsing, working other jobs, and waiting for the train wreck that COVID 19 has created for live entertainment to clear so they can build on their momentum. We caught up via Zoom to chat about it all.

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE:
How did Fountains come together?
FOUNTAINS (SEAN):
Chris and I have been playing music together for a while — we had a band called The Bottle Shop and played in Maryland. I was the drummer at the time and really wanted to sing and play guitar, so we shifted away from that group. We got together with Blayne on drums for our first show at Molly’s a year and a half ago; when we first played with him at soundcheck for that show, we knew it was going to be a good thing!
WLM:
What inspired the band's name?
FOUNTAINS (SEAN):
I used to write songs under the moniker “The Fountain of Youth” years ago. When we formed the band, we wanted to use a similar name. It’s my little homage to music being a fountain of youth in its own right, keeping you young and bright.
16
{ FEBRUARY 2021 |
WLM:
Describe your sound for readers who haven’t heard the band
FOUNTAINS:
Fountains is influenced by rock and folk with some jazz (Sean went to school for jazz drumming, actually). We play a lot of cover songs alongside our originals, maybe not super popular songs like “Don’t Stop Believing,” but by the time we are done playing an unfamiliar song, people love it even if they hadn’t heard it before. We cover songs by Foo Fighters, Steve Winwood, the Beatles, The Weeknd, Fleet Foxes, Radiohead, Kings of Leon — all over the map. When we play outdoors, and that is where we’ve been during the pandemic, we can rock out and be as loud as we want. Inside, we can take it down and do just fine set up in the corner at a tiny bar.
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
We write so many songs together during practice — kind of magic — we all come with ideas and play off each other. Writing a song is difficult to do, and Sean tends to do it by himself pretty often, but with the band our ideas flow and we all respect each other’s input. We have been writing more during quarantine, of course. Blayne is the rare drummer who has a huge ear and can write on guitar and piano.
WLM:
What have the challenges been during COVID for you and for local entertainment, and how has the band weathered the pandemic?
FOUNTAINS:
We felt like we were on a cool up and up last January and February. We had a ton of shows on the calendar, and then when the virus hit, everything came to a halt. Now, very few shows are happening for all performers, especially until the weather gets warmer and we can play outside. The first few months were difficult staying at home, plus Blayne has a daughter so we stopped rehearsing. Sean set up a studio, and Blayne has one too, so we decided it was a

is like home base to us, and Powers Farm & Brewery is awesome – we hadn’t been there before we played it, but they are nailing the outside thing right now – it’s the place to go. We do like the brewery downstairs from Molly’s, Altered Suds Beer Company.

While everyone waits for live entertainment to generally return, what is coming up for Fountains?
FOUNTAINS:
good time to concentrate on recording some original music. In April, Fountains released our first single “Difference To Me,” on Spotify and iTunes, and we were happy with the process we used to get it done — sending tracks back and forth and putting it together at home. Our initial plan was to release something every 2-3 weeks, but we pulled back from that. In August, we released “Say You Will,” a soft, kind of jazzy song that has received a really good response. We do have other work, but we are looking forward to playing out more as things start to open up. Sean teaches voice and drums virtually, Blayne does freelance illustration
work while being a full time dad to his four year old daughter, and Chris cooks at the Natural Marketplace in Warrenton.
WLM:
What are your favorite Warrenton area haunts to play?
FOUNTAINS:
We were so happy with how Warrenton’s Main Street has been set up during pandemic time, closing to traffic and allowing the restaurants to have diners outside. We played at Denim & Pearls a couple of times, but really, we were playing to the whole street which was great! Molly’s
The scene is still going on, people just need to know where to look for it. We are playing here and there but mostly last minute gigs. We’ll be at Old Bust Head Brewery in Vint Hill on March 27, and we hope that is the start of many more dates moving into the spring and summer. In the meantime, we are releasing two singles in February — “Off This Rock” and “Windows,” on all music platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and Amazon, where you can find our other music, too. Join Fountains on Facebook and Instagram, where we’ll keep our updated schedule and information. ❖ FOUNTAINSBAND.COM @FOUNTAINSBANDVA

ucy is a five-and-a-half-year-old Retriever, and we’ve had her since July 2017. We rescued her from Mutt Love Rescue in Fairfax. Lucy loves to ride in the car, go for long walks on the Warrenton Greenway, visit the cows at Rady Park, check the mail, and sun herself. She loves to lick the yogurt containers after we finish our snack. She has one game she plays with herself; she chases her tail several times a day and barks at it. She has even learned she has to say grace before she can eat her meals. Lucy has a BDF aka best dog friend named Coco. All we have to do is say Coco’s name and she gets excited because she knows she will get to ride in the car and go for a long walk with Coco. She’s also very particular. Once, we moved her bed in the living room away from the wall. We did not move it far, but we placed a small bookshelf against the wall. She was so upset with us, for two weeks, she would not lie in that bed. Eventually she came around to it, but it took some dog treats to persuade her. Lucy has never met a stranger. When she sees the young children playing in the park or walking around, she goes to the down position and starts whimpering as they come to pet her. She brings joy and happiness to everyone she meets. She always brings a smile to our faces, and reminds us that it’s all about love.

ndy is a four-year-old Boston Terrier, and we got him in March of 2017 when he was 12 weeks old. We had fallen in love with a Boston Terrier/Pug mix at the shelter, but we didn’t get him. We knew we either wanted a Boston Terrier or a pug, and we decided to go with a Boston because of their temperament with kids and other pets. Ben knew a good breeder in PA, and we named him Indiana after the character Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. He has served as our best friend, confidant, and fur baby, and always knows when you need some extra cuddles. One ALWAYS knows how Indy is feeling, whether it be excited, grumpy, sad, or just all around goofy. He comes along for all our adventures and steals hearts wherever he goes. We challenge anyone to not smile back at this face! He loves to play fetch at the Warrenton Dog Park, and he likes to play keep away with other dogs there. He’s like the energizer bunny. He doesn’t know that he’s little, he prefers to play with bigger dogs, and he really puts them in their place. It’s so funny to watch. He’s an only dog, and he’s a spoiled little man, and he knows it. He just loves everyone and everything, all people, all kinds of animals-he’s always running up to play. He’s one of the friendliest dogs I’ve ever met. At the same time, I feel safe when I’m home alone. He’s small but mighty. And his signature move is his twirl-he’s always spinning around.

ancetta is a potbellied/guinea hog cross. She came from a farm that rescued her mother only to find out she was pregnant and farrowed shortly after. She originally came to our farm as a companion to my horse, but she had other ideas and quickly fell in love with climate control inside the house! She is so much fun to be around! Her antics make the whole family laugh daily. She is a unique pet and she routinely attends schools and visits with children, who all really love her. Pancetta enjoys short walks, lots of snacks, belly rubs, and naps in the sun. Fall and spring are her favorite seasons. She enjoys the acorns that fall in the fall and clover in the spring. oven and waits for someone to drop something. She eagerly awaits the day I leave the pantry door open and I know nothing will be safe. She is part of the family but definitely the boss of all the dogs. She enjoys the rabbit because he eats grass alongside her. She is completely house trained, which most people want to know. She was easier than any dog I have ever trained. She sits for treats and she has a stool she will stand on as well. She comes when her name is called unless the acorns are calling! She was in a class play at Highland school and has made several visits to the Kindergarten class. She was also in a “teacher kisses the pig” fundraiser at another local school.

eastern standard,
If you go twenty paces and suddenly realize you missed a spot, why, you just go back before moving forward. In beagle time we’re not embarrassed when the same runners have passed us three times on the circular path around the park. Beagle time can be quite calming. Secondly, be courageous! Don’t be fearful about taking on something bigger than you think you can handle. While many dogs enjoy fetching and gnawing on sticks, Grace hunts for whole branches she can drag around. Or she finds the kind of logs that work well in fireplaces. This actually ties directly into beagle time since when you’re dragging around something three times your size, your ability to move quickly is limited.
daylight savings,
I
have been following a company called Your True Nature, a father-daughter founded business that has cornered the market on products that share advice from nature. I find their story appealing because I personally believe that great wisdom is found in ordinary people, places, events, and well...dogs. Consider Grace, my recently adopted beagle. She has three nuggets of wisdom to share with you today. The first one is this: Consider living in beagle time. Stop being so obsessed with the concept of never having enough time. Please knock off the whining about “too much work and too little time” or weekends being too short. And by the way, no one else cares about how Daylight Saving Time affects you. In beagle time there is no rushing around to get from place to place. There is only moseying around while sniffing the air, the leaves, the grass.

{ FEBRUARY 2021 |
The third bone of wisdom is culled from something that just happened. No matter how far away you go, never lose sight of home. Today we had to be out of town several hours so I hired a wonderful service (My Pet’s Friend) to come to our home to pick up Grace and take her for a walk down our country road. In our meet-and-greet initial meeting, I had warned Missy (the dog walker) about beagle time and advised when her timed walk reached midpoint, she would likely have to pick up Grace and literally turn her around. Otherwise that twenty minute walk
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
could turn into two hours. When we arrived home, I read Missy’s note about her visit. She advised that she had attempted to walk Grace down our road, but ended up instead making several loops around our yard. You see, Grace wouldn’t go very far from home. In Missy’s words, “Grace didn’t want to lose sight of her house.” Since we don’t know Grace’s back story of why she was surrendered to the Fauquier SPCA Shelter, I would only be guessing at what was going through her little beagle brain. But maybe it was that there really is no place like home. ❖ ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Norma Thatcher makes the world a safer place for audiences by teaching adults to be interesting public speakers. The Accidental Boxing Club Chris Concannon’s club offers opportunities for exercise, camaraderie, and self-discipline BY AMANDA M. SOCCI
Fauquier County is well known for its picturesque landscapes that meander, rise, and fall with gentle submission to grassy hills and valleys. Its residents highly value the rural, relaxed lifestyle over crowded city living. Imagine introducing an unusual, disparate activity that brings a rush of anticipated moves, gets the heart rate active, the adrenaline pumping, and teaches you how to spar cooperatively. That is exactly what Warrenton resident Chris Concannon did with the Fauquier County Boxing Club he accidentally created. Meeting in warm-weather months on Saturdays at Eva Walker Park in Old Town Warrenton, this family-friendly boxing club offers mild exercise options for boxers of all levels and actively encourages participation from men, women, and children. It is a far cry from Hollywood tales such as Million Dollar Baby or Raging Bull with its most extreme aspect being Concannon’s undivided dedication to the group which he demonstrates each week through preparation

The boxing club is in its infancy, but even in its short existence, it has already motivated its members to learn basic boxing moves, practice skills, and get in better overall physical shape. Interestingly, the creation of the club was unintentional. Concannon mentioned that he posted a

simple message in a Facebook community group inviting Fauquier County residents to spar with him to help him get better in boxing. The people who responded told Concannon that they wanted to help him, but had no previous training in boxing. Without skipping a beat, Concannon organized his thoughts and decided to alter his original one-on-one sparring plan by creating a public experience to benefit the community. Approximately two weeks after Concannon’s original Facebook post, the Fauquier County Boxing Club held its first session in early August last year. Each session includes warm-up exercises, progressive lessons in boxing moves, opportunities for drills, and a final burnout session that had everyone practicing drills in rapid-fire movements. The club averages 10 – 12 people per session, though sometimes fewer people participate. “I was nervous about people showing up. I went through a lot of peaks and valleys [in administering the club; however] I learned so much about building a healthy community from scratch, especially a boxing one [because] the county wasn’t familiar with this,” he reflected on his experiences so far. Originally from Boston, Massachusetts, Concannon moved to Warrenton in September 2018. A deeply religious man, he was inspired to move to the area to found an independent church with his friends as a reformed Presbyterian, creating a sense of unity and belonging through humble means in each other’s homes. So how does the mild-mannered, levelheaded Concannon reconcile his devotion to spiritual beliefs with a seemingly dangerous sport that sanctions physical knockouts when opponents alternate through a series of strong blows to the face and quickthinking defenses? Easy. Concannon is polite, but firm when it comes to the concept of sparring. At no point does he encourage hardcore bloodied fights like the ones professionals do. In fact, he wants the opposite; he chose to set up the boxing club as an educational vehicle that helps people get physically fit while enjoying camaraderie and friendship-building. We saw Concannon in action last October, right before the club was set to finish its inaugural summer – fall season. The first thing the attendees did was a series of basic warmups around the basketball court for about 10 minutes. Next came the progression in Concannon’s boxing lessons, which had been building steadily since August. Concannon asked each attendee to

practice what he taught with a partner. All partnered up, everyone wore boxing gloves and took turns practicing offensive cuts and defensive maneuvers such as ducking or moving away. Each drill lasted roughly three minutes with a meticulous Concannon and his stopwatch overseeing attendees’ movements with the same care and attention as any teacher. At every moment of the intense 1.5-hour session, Concannon’s frame was unwittingly poised for a photo, whether in elegant fighter stance or in his trademark rhythmic rocking motion, signaling to others how they should be moving. “Pivot on that foot. Be light on your feet. It should almost look like you’re dancing, like a centrifugal motion,” explained Concannon to the attendees. That day, Martin Tobarga attended with his 10-year-old son Randy. Tobarga began boxing when the club first began; Randy, already an active athlete in multiple sports, chose to attend because “it’s fun.” Another attendee, Nicole Quiroz, had met Concannon a year earlier when she started working with boxing. Quiroz says she was impressed with his style because “he puts correct form over speed … better form equals less injury,” she explained. Quiroz brought along her friend, Ashley Gray, who was excited to join the

While the partnering drills were taking place, attendee Emanuel Gebremeskel was quiet and driven, focusing on perfecting the skills he had learned previously from Concannon during private boxing sessions. Concannon began boxing in his freshman year of college in 2012, keeping at it until he eventually led a boxing group during his junior year. Although he never competed in amateur boxing matches, he felt a strong attraction to the notion of training others and coaching them. “I feel like a missionary,” explained Concannon as he laughed at the oddity of bringing the sport to slow-paced Fauquier County, “people don’t normally do boxing in an agricultural community.” The Fauquier County Boxing Club is currently on hiatus until the spring. However, Concannon anxiously awaits the day when he can resume because he feels the community has embraced him and his boxing lessons, and he’s enthusiastic about keeping the momentum going. Love Muffins A VALENTINE’S MORNING FRESH, HOMEMADE TREAT BY KARLA JONES SEIDITA, HOME ECONOMIST
I
t’s always special to start Valentine’s Day off with a special breakfast. How about falling in love with fresh, yummy (and easy!) made-from-scratch muffins baked with oodles of love, just like granny made? Light years away from the mass produced kind, these are the real deal. The secret: whip up my Master Muffin Mix the night before and bake the muffins fresh in the morning. The Basic Muffin Recipe will stand on its own with beef stew at dinnertime, or with peanut butter and jelly anytime, but for Valentine’s Day breakfast let’s use it to try some easy and delicious variations: think chocolate chip, banana, applesauce, molasses, berries...all kinds of options. The Master Mix will also serve as the basis for a so, so easy cherry cobbler. Simply start with the Basic Muffin Recipe and explore from there!
Step One Prepare Ahead Master Muffin Mix MAKES 12 CUPS OF MIX INGREDIENTS
8 cups flour 4 cups sugar 4 Tablespoons baking powder 2 teaspoons salt 1 1/3 cups canola oil* *Other fats or oils not recommended as many harden in the fridge making the batter difficult to mix.

Step Two Your Basic Muffin Recipe First, pick your flavor. Before you begin to mix, decide whether you're making plain muffins or a custom treat like any of the variations below. There will be some differences in ingredients and process. MAKES 9 MUFFINS INGREDIENTS
3 cups Master Mix 1 egg ⅔2/3 cup milk DIRECTIONS
Pan size: Cups measuring 2⅔” in diameter x 1¼” deep. Muffin pans vary widely in size; if yours is different, fill the cups to 3/4 full and adjust baking time as needed. Position oven rack so muffins will bake in center. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line 9 muffin cups with muffin/cupcake papers. Measure any ingredients needed to customize your muffins and set aside to add as directed in Step 3. Measure Master Muffin Mix by spooning it into a dry ingredient measuring cup. Level the cup with the back of a table knife. Place measured mix into a bowl. Into another bowl, whisk egg and milk together. Pour egg mixture into the measured mix. Briefly and gently combine using a plastic or rubber spatula. Mix as little as possible, do not overbeat. With the exception of the Molasses Muffins, the batter should be thick and moistened but remain lumpy. Divide batter evenly between prepared nine muffin cups. Bake until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean – 13 to 15 minutes. Do not over bake, remember to adjust the baking time according to your muffin tin size. Let muffins cool in the pan 2 to 3 minutes before removing.

Wine in Virginia is steeped in history and showcased in beautiful settings. BY MARK LUNA | COURTESY PHOTOS
I
’ve been very fortunate in my life to have lived around the country, from Texas and Tennessee to southern California and New York…City that is; and for the last nine years, home has been here in Northern Virginia. That won’t be changing for a long while, if at all. Wherever I’ve lived, I’ve made it a point to visit the local wineries. To that point, I’ve never had more wine in my ‘backyard’ than I do now. With a collection of short, beautiful drives to choose from, I can go in any direction from my Warrenton home and hit a winery…it’s great. Something I’ve come to truly appreciate about local NoVA wineries is what I call the ‘gift of the grounds.’ Beautiful vistas, mesmerizing views and historical houses are often commonplace, and the wineries themselves are seemingly borne by the very presence of their historical predecessors. I confess that prior to moving to Virginia I had never heard of Nokesville, Warrenton, or Hume. Even less so did I know that I’d find a winery or two there. Well, having lived in these locales, I now know. And for this month’s piece, I visit a few wine spots you might want to visit yourself…given a certain romantic day that lands on the 14th of every February, it’s nice to have a local winery getaway. If Fauquier County is your preferred wine stomping grounds, then you should head over to the quaint, albeit unincorporated community of Hume and visit Philip Carter Winery of Virginia. Don’t let the fact that PCW was founded in 2008 fool you, as the history of Virginia wine and the Carter family are indelibly intertwined, with documentation dating back to the mid-1700s. You’ll learn of Cleve, the grape growing plantation in the Tidewater where it all began for the Carter family and how, in 1763, the Royal Governor Francis Fauquier,
then governor of the Colony of Virginia, certified that the Carter family was successfully growing European vines at Cleve. This was the first recorded history of successful grape production in Virginia with European vines. Indeed, educational opportunities abound at today’s PCW, with artful tours of food and wine pairings as well as historical explorations of Virginia wines in the form of vintage Virginia wine tastings. And of course, there are the current wines to be enjoyed as well… For white wine fans, there’s plenty to enjoy, starting with PCW Shirley Chardonnay. This 100% Estate grown fruit is a multi-award-winning wine, aged 10 months in French oak barrels. Produced with 70% malolactic fermentation, giving it a wonderful creaminess, there’s still enough acidic quality to give the pear and citrus fruits their bright presence.

ABOVE: Built in the Tidewater style as per William Alexander, the patriarch of the property, the centerpiece of the Effingham Manor property was used as a dwelling for most of its 250-year history. LEFT: Philip Carter Strother, descendant of the founding Carter family, values both his history and his wine. RIGHT: Winemaker Chris Pearmund of both Effingham Manor and Pearmund Cellars, is driven to make the best wines Virginia has to offer.
Not to be outdone is the Sabine Hall Viognier, a great bottling that showcases what many believe is Virginia’s greatest white wine grape, viognier. SBV comes from 75% stainless steel tank and 25% French barrels. Aromas of white flowers and candied lemon peel set the stage for a dry, round mouthfeel, while the palate is complex with layers of citrus cream and wet stone. The structure from the oak allows for a multitude of food pairings, including fish and seafood dishes. On the red wine side, the two most notable bottlings are PCW Nomini Hall Cabernet Franc and Magnolia Farm, whose blend of Virginia grapes Norton and Chambourcin define this unique, original offering. Nomini Hall Cabernet Franc is produced in a more ‘old world’ style in contrast to many other Virginia cabernet francs. It’s a medium bodied, low tannic wine; and while the oak is present, it’s not over-bearing. A peppery nose, complemented with plum flavors define the drinking experience. Food-wise, more acid driven dishes will provide an interesting contrast while more savory foods will compliment it as well…a versatile wine for the table. The 2019 Magnolia Farm is blended cuveé, with the Norton spending 10 months in older French oak, while the Chambourcin is aged entirely in stainless steel. These two Virginia favorites are known for their intensity

of color and the wine doesn’t disappoint in that category. Vanilla note on the nose gives way to the classic Norton aroma of raspberries. On the palate, Chambourcin brings a softness not typically seen in Norton blends. Unfolding cherry flavors dominate the second half of the wine. It’s medium-bodied with sharp acidity, making it extremely food-friendly. A trek out west to Philip Carter Winery is a good day spent. Barely thirty minutes southeast of Haymarket, in the heart of Nokesville, lies Effingham Manor and Winery. If you’re aware of Pearmund Cellars (Broad Run) – and you should be – then you need to visit Effingham. This is acclaimed winemaker Chris Pearmund’s second winery and it’s every bit as enthralling as his eponymous wine home. The grounds are stunning and as I learned upon my visit, ‘the centerpiece of the property was used as a dwelling for most of its 250-year history. It was built in the Tidewater style as per William Alexander, the patriarch of the property, former Colonel of the local militia, and County Justice. The manor is beautiful. There’s also a blacksmith shop, historic slave quarters and a smoke shop, adding to the complex history of the property. There’s also a Koi pond, English garden and the Lewis and Clark tree, gifted from the explorers themselves to William Alexander. Then, of course, there’s the wine. In the first two years of operation, Effingham wines won over 100 medals, including 50-plus gold medals from a variety of competitions. This speaks to Pearmund’s

continuous drive to make the best wines Virginia has to offer. For the white wine fans, both the Traminette and Viognier are a must, with stainless steel aging and unique fruit profiles showing off the wines in their own unique way. Not to be missed is the Cameo Wine Collection of rosé wines. The bottles bear the names and likenesses of twelve different women born in Virginia, and tell a small part of the unique stories that bear the test of time. Notable women such as Martha Washington, Pearl Bailey and Ella Fitzgerald are featured, each with a bottle label depiction. This series of wines celebrates the 19th Amendment and the women whose contributions to the world range from historic, business, entertainment, and politics. For the red wine lover, there’s plenty to choose from, including the Merlot, Norton and Meritage. That said, the two wines that truly separate themselves are the Tannat and the multi-award-winning King’s Ransom, a Bordeaux style blend ripe with dark fruits, tobacco hints and peppery spice finish. And finally, the Virginia’s Heritage Wine. Featured here a couple of years ago, and ready to drink now, VHW is from 16 Virginia wineries, blended, aged and bottled in August 2018 to produce 10,000 bottles. The number of bottles represents each of the original 10,000 vitis vinifera vines planted in Virginia by the Virginia Company, some 400 years ago. So, do a little wine exploring this February and visit these places. As expected, all current safety protocols are practiced, allowing for a reassured experience of true wine enjoyment. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖
