ebruary is our annual pet issue, and congratulations to our winners, Jackson (first place) and runners up Charlie and Pickles. And thank you to everyone who sent photos, and our many voters who participated and supported all the entries in the contest. When we hear the word pet, we most often think of dogs first, then cats. I trained horses for many years, but horses are much more than pets-they are more like partners. I was going to include a photo of me with Winston, my 6-month-old Golden Retriever puppy, who is very photogenic and would be appropriate for the pet issue. But instead I am including a photo from my horse days. In January, I lost my best friend and coach Lisa Fuller, who was one of the most influential people in my life. The photo shows us riding together in a dressage demonstration at a prestigious horse show circa 1990. I met Lisa in New Hampshire when I was eight years old and she was ten years older, rode with her and worked for her until I grew up, got married, and moved on to a “real” career. We then moved into a best friend stage, which we maintained until the end. She was the reason I moved to Virginia in 1990: to ride and train in horse country. After training with Olympic equestrians and competing very successfully in Combined Training, she suffered a career-ending head injury in 1987. She overcame overwhelming physical and mental obstacles to not only walk, but ride again and became a respected horsewoman, coach, trainer, breeder, and fox hunter with Old Dominion Hounds. One of her greatest achievements was as mentor for her longtime students - including myself - who grew up not only knowing horses inside and out, but with a tireless work ethic, a respect for
physical fitness, a love of the outdoors, and an appreciation for Budweiser. She will be remembered for her wacky but infectious sense of humor, boundless energy, steadfast determination, and an almost unfathomable amount of perseverance in the face of challenges. While riding horses and editing a magazine seem vastly unrelated, Lisa taught me to always work as hard as I could and do the best I could, while always, always, laughing and preferably while listening to Jimmy Buffett. Things that can be applied to obtaining success in all aspects of life. I highly suggest adopting this outlook on life.

Starting Early Planning for the season ahead
G
ardening has so many benefits! Not only can you grow your own delicious healthy food — your salad can’t get any fresher than lettuce picked from your garden 15 minutes before dinner — but it’s great for your mental and physical health, and the kids can get involved too. Did you know that immersing your hands in the soil is said to have antidepressant effects? In this ongoing series, we hope to help current gardeners as well as inspire beginners to start. Fauquier County has so many resources to support gardeners, and a lot of people with a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Jim Hankins, executive director of the Fauquier Education Farm, is our local expert, and he is answering questions from our readers.
I have noticed driving by throughout the years that you use a black ground covering around many of your crops at the Fauquier Education Farm. What kind of material is it? Is it something that might be helpful for the backyard gardener vs. traditional mulching?
I have decided that this is the year I want to start vegetable gardening. What are some good local resources for a beginner? Is the Fauquier Education Farm offering any classes this Spring?
The Fauquier Education Farm has ten free workshops each growing season that each directly relate to what we are growing at the farm. These workshops are advertised on our Facebook page and website. The Fauquier/Rappahannock Master Gardeners also offer some very good workshops throughout the year through the Fauquier Cooperative Extension office on Pelham Street in Warrenton.
I'm planning to start some spring crops indoors soon with grow lights. Can I leave the lights on 24/7 or should I turn them off at night?
Plants will do better if you give them a sleep period without lights each night.
I have found that lids and heat pads are helpful with germination, but should I remove them after my seedlings sprout?
Heat pads and clear plastic tray tops are really helpful to assure good germination rates, but it is best to remove them within a day or two after the seedlings have come up. Excessive moisture trapped under the clear tops can lead to a condition called, dampening off, which is when an otherwise healthy looking seedling will develop a brown spot on the base of its stem and fall over and quickly die. You can baby your plants too much, so take off the tops and let them get some healthy air flow.

Mulching is going to be your best form of weed control. We use a lot of woven landscape fabric because it is reusable for many years, it’s highly effective at weed control, and because it helps conserve ground moisture. The biggest drawback of the material we use is that I don’t know of any retailers that offer it in smaller quantities, you normally have to buy a full 300 foot roll. It comes in widths from 3 feet to 15 but most people don’t need 300 feet of it. Get together with friends to buy a roll, or look at hay and straw mulch, both can be very effective.
I've often heard that a mild winter equates to a bad summer for insects, including garden pests. With all of our recent snowy ground cover, is there any hope that they might not be too bad this year? Have you ever noticed significant changes from year to year? I have also heard that hard winters can mean less insect pressure, but my experience hasn’t shown that there is any significant difference from year to year. You can learn more about farmscaping to support more beneficial insects that eat the bad ones. Row covers are also highly effective at keeping insects from ever reaching some vegetables. And there are a number of safe and effective organic sprays available to help control pests. Have a vegetable gardening question for Jim? Windows 11 will upgrade at no charge, at least for now, if you have an upgradable Windows 10 computer. Bill notes that the “start button” popup menus have been replaced with a single, less cluttered application and settings pane. He finds the Windows 11 title bar and context menu compact and neat compared to Windows 10. Gamers will enjoy HDR video and local caching of large files needed for Xbox platform gaming. Windows 11 will, eventually, support running Android OS applications as downloaded from the Microsoft store. This creates better PC / phone integration. Apple tablets have had voice control and stylus tactile feedback for years. Microsoft finally joins this party when using their Surface or Tablet laptops that have a stylus. They have also upgraded their Linux subsystem, allowing use of graphical applications.”
Incompatibilities
W
indows 11 is here to stay. Windows 11 desktops and notebooks are already flooding the market, and if you own a Windows 10 system, you’ve probably seen a popup saying it is time to upgrade to Windows 11, or “Sorry, but your system cannot be upgraded to Windows 11.” Today I want to present important information about Microsoft’s new Windows 11 OS. At the same time, I will introduce Bill Zirkle, our senior Mac and Microsoft specialist who is also a beta tester, meaning he gets new OS releases earlier to try out, test, and figure out how to “best them” before the software is officially released to the public. So I asked him to share some of his knowledge about what is going on with Windows 11.
First of all, can you upgrade?
To upgrade to Windows 11, Bill recommends that the prospective computer should have: 1. At least an 8th generation Intel or Ryzen 2000 AMD microprocessor (the brains). Thus, a machine made in 2017, or newer. 2. Trusted Platform Module of version 2.0 or newer. This device is security hardware that is built-in into a laptop, that can not be replaced; However, some desktops might be upgradable. 3. Secure boot settings which, if currently off, will need enabling.

Before buying or upgrading a computer with Windows 11, check carefully with the provider’s support for any special proprietary programs you are using, in order to make sure that they are compatible. This is especially true for programs such as QuickBooks, Quicken, AutoCAD, as well as Photoshop and other components of the Adobe Suite. Microsoft says on its website that Windows 11 will run software that used to run on Windows 7, 8 and 10, but Bill’s experience is that Microsoft can only do so much to support them. The software providers have to adapt their software as well. That can take some time and cause some temporary problems, but they will have to adapt to the new OS process. It gives them the opportunity to sell you updated versions; in this way you might get new valuable features. Hopefully a win – win situation. Bill cautions that Windows 11 is not a free upgrade from Windows 7; you would have to upgrade to version 10 first if your computer is compatible. Microsoft Office 2010 might still run on a Windows 11 machine, but older versions may have difficulties running. Keep in mind that a program might install without an error, but that does not mean it will run 100%. You also might have to buy a new Office license, and Microsoft will make it tempting to get their 365 subscription versus their one-time download product.
To Windows 11 or not?
There’s a lot to like about the Windows 11 desktop layout and features. But if you decide to buy or upgrade to a new Windows 11 computer, and don’t like the new desktop, there are a few adjustments you can make. Bill was happy to report that “We can make Windows 11 revert to the look of Windows 10’s ‘start button’ style.” We recommend not rushing into upgrading! First, get a thorough computer system check, including your software. If your computer is infected with viruses or has other issues, a big update like the Windows 11 upgrade might freeze or corrupt your Windows OS. If you’re not ready for a new OS, have incompatible programs, or simply hate changes, I think it’s best to keep your Windows 10 computer in good shape for a couple more years. We advise commercial users to stay with Windows 10 for now. Don’t worry! Microsoft says they will be releasing Windows 10 updates until October 2025. Let’s give Microsoft some more time for Windows 11 to evolve; it sometimes takes years before an OS is running at its best. From Zimbabwe to Warrenton Local author Lynn Brooke’s young adult fantasy series was heavily influenced by an unconventional upbringing. BY PAM KAMPHUIS
W
arrenton resident Lynn Brooke has led a very interesting life. She was born in Zimbabwe and raised in Rhodesia, and her upbringing was unconventional, to say the least. Her father was a builder for the government, and was sent to outlying areas to build infrastructure. The family lived very remotely, sometimes in a home with mud walls and thatched roof. She and her siblings were homeschooled by their mother via shortwave radio from Salisbury, the capital city. They ran barefoot in the bush, playing in “kiddie pools” of elephant footprint depressions filled with rainwater. Her parents encouraged imagination and creativity, and she describes her life as “a fantasy made real”. Fast forward to today, and Lynn lives on Waterloo Street in Warrenton with her husband on property that has been in her husband’s family since before the Civil War, loving the absence of the hustle and bustle of Northern Virginia and the proximity to the mountains. Having devoted many years to her art, Lynn started writing in 2010, and is the author of four young adult fantasy books as well as a personal memoir. She sat down with Warrenton Lifestyle and spoke with us about her life and how it has influenced her writing.

Tell me a little about the political and racial climate in Africa in the ‘50s and ‘60s, and how it affected you and your writing?
In the ’50s and ’60s, Rhodesia, a British colony, was still a raw and under-developed country. At this young age, I was unaware of the political and racial climate. African servants raised us since Mom needed to devote more time to pursue her writing and painting. It was only around age ten, once we moved to a town, that I witnessed for myself how differently whites were treated compared to black people. As I grew older and more able to think for myself, I made a conscious effort not to pass on the prejudices or judgments based on skin color that I had witnessed. I created the main characters in my fantasy series as a diverse group, not of one race or background. My characters illustrate by their actions that skin color or social standing have nothing to do with ability.

How long have you been writing? What encouraged you to start your Ialana fantasy novels?
I began writing in 2010 after I had reached a plateau in painting. Both my parents were scribblers. They published nothing, only writing for fun and they encouraged me to do the same, so I tackled that next to see if I could get a book out of it. After one historical novel about Africa that didn’t do very well, I tried another genre—fantasy. I now love reading fantasy. I have read all Tolkien’s books (yes, even The Silmarillion). I took something away from everything I read. Several years ago, it dawned on me that I had some great fantasy book ideas that were just begging to be given life. I immediately sat down and wrote The Six and the Crystals of Ialana which I finished in three months. Then I published three more books in the series over the next two years.
Why young adult fiction? Why the fantasy genre?
When I was growing up, young adult fiction wasn’t really a thing. We had children’s fiction or adult novels. I remembered stories I grew up with, those that stimulated my imagination and made me realize nothing is impossible. All the books I had ever read, those for children that

The Ialana Series. These books are a new take on fantasy, straddling the science fiction genre and venturing into the paranormal and spiritual realms. Driven by frightening nightmares, six teens come together to complete a perilous trek across the continent of Ialana. Their quest: to find a magical crystal lost 500 years in the past. Guided by a mysterious mentor, the group must find their way through a maze of dangerous mountain tunnels, avoid an implacable enemy, battle with genetically altered monsters, and cross an ocean to reclaim their destiny. Their odds of success are slim, and betrayal lurks in their midst.
brought in mythical beings and creatures, the science fiction books of other worlds I devoured, the mystery, horror, and suspense books—all contributed to my interpretation of myth, adventure, and fantasy. I want my fantasy books to open up a new understanding of magic and miracles for my young (or not-so-young) readers.
Tell me about your main characters in the Ialana Series. Where did they come from? The main character of the series is Jarah, an introverted teenager with self-esteem issues. He is part of who I was at that age, only male. His love-interest is Tegan, another teen who is always fearful and overly cautious. She too is a part of me. There are many more characters and they all need to dig deep to find their courage and determination. All my characters reflect something within me.
You wrote your autobiography Tea, Scones, and Malaria, after your fantasy series. Why the change of genre? Most authors have more than one genre in them. I can’t separate my life from fantasy, because my whole life has been a fantasy made real. I have always wanted to write my true story, so it wasn’t difficult for me to make the leap

from one genre to another. I feel in many ways, they are not so different.
What is the most satisfactory part of your writing career?
That I can put my day dreams to work and share them with others! As a child, I never thought that would happen. Dreaming seemed to be a luxury, but dreams are what fuel innovation and creativity. It took me a long time to discover this fact and allow myself not only to dream, but to allow others into my head space.
Future plans?
I have many more books in me. I only fear I won’t live to be 285 years old so I can complete them all! My current project is the sequel to Tea, Scones, and Malaria. I will definitely write more fantasy. I have already begun another book, the first in a continuing Ialana series, “The Ialana Chronicles.” This book will feature new characters but build on the same world and history of the original characters in the Ialana Series. It is also my intent to write more books based in Africa. My family genealogy is fascinating, and I’d like to write another historical fiction loosely based on my slave ancestors. They are a diverse group, originating from Africa, India, and Indonesia, who intermarried with the South African settlers from Europe. Their history intrigues me.
My watercolors are inspired by local scenes and objects. My goal was to record the vanishing rural landscape before it disappeared. Every time I went on short trips in the area, I took my camera with me to record interesting subjects, such as houses, vintage vehicles and old farm machinery. I would then return to my studio to paint them. My painting, “Before Walmart,” (above) is an example of this, as is “65 Chevy” (right) and my award-winning “Old Tractor”.
Is there anyone who helped you along the way that you’d like to mention?
Inklings is a local writers’ group that I’ve been a member of since July 2019, and I want to credit the members of this group for their support, mentorship, and advice throughout my recent writings. Without them, writing my memoir would have been much more difficult, and perhaps not nearly as successful. I would recommend this group to any aspiring writer!

An Alternative Approach Southeastern Alternative School offers a project-based learning environment for students who struggle with traditional teaching approaches BY HANNAH SAMLALL
“I
know it sounds strange to say “love” when we talk about educators, but it’s true and the most accurate reflection of where their hearts and souls are. They love the kids who ask a million questions, wiggle too much in their seats, take things apart and put them back together in a different way, or challenge the status quo," says Dr. Michelle Neibauer, principal of Southeastern Alternative School in southern Fauquier County. When you hear the words, “alternative school,” one of the first thoughts many people have is, “that’s where the kids with discipline problems go.” Southeastern does offer their Refocus Programs, which are for approved Fauquier County students that have been long term suspended or expelled from their base schools so they can stay on academic track. But Southeastern is so much more than that. Every child is unique and learns differently. At Southeastern, they offer a hands-on, interactive, project-based learning (PBL) approach to instruction and assessment, for students who struggle with traditional teaching methods. “It is important to remember that our approach to teaching and learning is significantly different, but it is not easier nor watered down,” Neibauer said. “We adhere to the Virginia SOLs and FCPS curriculum just as the base schools. However, the way we approach the curriculum makes school success more attainable for students who struggle with traditional teaching approaches.”

“Southeastern is the place where kids who struggle with the big school routines and style of learning can be successful,” one student shared. Project-based learning is a teaching and assessment method that engages students in active learning activities by identifying a real-world problem and developing its solution. Students work with partners, in groups, or independently to demonstrate their skills in the areas of problem-solving, questioning, time-management, creativity, ingenuity, comprehension, and analysis. With this method, students are able to demonstrate what they learn as they journey through the lesson or unit, not just at the end. PBL methods actively engage students in the lesson/ unit from beginning to end. An inherent step in the PBL process is the presentation of learning; students hold an annual symposium where they present, discuss, answer questions about all the individual, partner, and group projects they’ve completed for the year. Families, school leaders, past teachers, and community members are invited to participate. “Students who struggle with traditional teaching methods such as lengthy lectures, extensive note-taking, independently reading textbooks & answering questions, etc. typically benefit from PBL methods where students are expected to interact with each other, ask questions, seek solutions, and manipulate information,” Neibauer said. “PBL provides real-world connections for students in a

Research is clear; hands-on, interactive, real-world activities are crucial for students who require a different or ‘alternative’ way to learn.” With this method, class sizes are extremely small with an average student-to-teacher ratio of 1:10. Overall enrollment is limited to 10 seats in the Middle School and 60 seats in the High School. “This is a collective group of like-minded individuals who love kids. They provide kindness, compassion, equity in every interaction they have with students and colleagues. They come to work dedicated to making every day a positive experience for so many students who have struggled with school in the past,” Neibauer said. “The challenges of the past two years during this pandemic have only strengthened their resolve and dedication to the students, to each other, and within themselves. They could work anywhere and I’m honored they choose to work at Southeastern.” All of the educators at Southeastern share certain values that are unique to their school: student-centered decision making, building meaningful-long lasting relationships, collaboration, risk-taking, restorative practices, real-life connections through field trips, hands-on/messy/loud learning, reflective learning and teaching, and evidence of learning (not just “grades”). “I believe one of the most important values is our focus on working bell-to-bell in classes so that students and families have homework-free evenings to enjoy family time, participate in extracurricular activities, work, etc.,” Neibauer said. “Students come to school ready to engage, to participate fully in their learning when families can focus on family time instead of stressing about homework.” Logan Strack, a 2021 graduate, couldn’t say enough about the educators and the sense of community at the school. “Having the same teachers the entire time you're at Southeastern really allows you to create bonds with them and allows students to open up more about things that they may not otherwise feel comfortable sharing,” Strack said. “The most important thing to me about attending Southeastern was just the amount of community. I always felt like I belonged and it was always a place I could feel safe. It was like a home away from home for me.”

Tell us about Jackson: what is his breed and age?
He’s four years old, and he’s a mix, but primarily Australian Shepherd. I think it’s the Aussie in him that gives him his great personality.
How did he come into your life?
I adopted him when he was about three months old. He’d been abandoned in the woods near a friend’s house in Bealeton. They were going to keep him, but he was too high-strung.

Aussies can be energetic. What was he like as a puppy?
He was a terrible puppy! But I always knew I would keep him, I just needed to figure out what he needed. He’s just so cute you can’t say no to him. I took him to Sit Means Sit, and he’s the coolest dog now. I take him everywhere with me. He really likes to meet people and other dogs. I take him to the Farmers Market and the dog park and to eat at Molly’s, and he loves the attention.
What is his favorite thing to do?
He loves sticks! My boyfriend is clearing his yard to put in a fence, and Jackson’s helping him by digging out roots. I think he thinks they’re just underground sticks.
How has he changed your life?
Oh my gosh-he’s changed me in every way. He’s made me more responsible. He taught me to be more loving and compassionate, and he helps me stay active. I just moved here, so he helps me get out and meet people. I didn’t know I could love a dog this much.

Moments of Brightness When They Count the Most Meet the members of Fauquier Health’s Pet Therapy team BY NORMA THATCHER
N
earing the age of ninety, the hospital patient had not only never owned a dog, but had never even petted a dog. That abruptly changed when Pet Therapy dog Tess, a Sheltie, visited at Fauquier Health. It was love at first sight as Tess nestled in on the patient’s bed, who didn’t want to let her go. “You all go on ahead and visit other people but leave the dog here!” the patient proclaimed with finality to Tess’s owner Lisa Fox. For over 21 years the dogs (and more recently, the miniature horses) of the Pet Therapy program at Fauquier Health have been bringing joy to the patients at our local hospital. Some teams also visit patients at senior living facility The Villa of Suffield Meadows. The Pet Therapy program is amazingly rewarding for the patients, the volunteers, and the staff. The popular program started out under the wing of the former Fauquier Hospital Auxiliary in March 2000, beginning in outpatient therapy/rehab with Colin Elliot as Director. Later, physical therapist Julie Maybach-Royal (with dogs Teddy and Tigger) and Molly Morgan (with pup Cordymay) began the program at the hospital. Julie served as Facilitator of Pet Therapy until 2004 when Sheryl Vollrath took over. Sheryl served until 2019 when MaryBeth Bradley assumed responsibility as Volunteer Coordinator. As of today, MaryBeth manages a roster of thirteen Pet Therapy volunteers, eight dogs, and one miniature horse. The program’s first miniature horse, Silver, retired in 2021 but Lola the mini joined in 2020 and remains to help the dogs on the team brighten patients’ days.

The pandemic forced the postponement of Pet Therapy visits in March of 2020, and the hospital’s patients missed out on seeing the four-legged ambassadors of joy. The visits have since resumed, although Fauquier Health carefully monitors the virus and makes safety decisions regarding visitors – pet and human – on a constantly evolving basis. “We hate to postpone the pet therapy visits because it’s such a successful program, but we monitor the situation closely for everyone’s safety,” says Sarah Cubbage, Marketing Director of Fauquier Health. The Pet Therapy visits are often made in teams. Each pet handler and pet may have a Pet Rep accompany them on patient visits. The Pet Rep “smooths the way” by making sure that a visit from the animal is desired and that the area is clear. Then the rep administers hand sanitizer and (if the dog is small enough), a covering is placed on the patient’s bed or lap. Each patient receives a “calling card” from the pet with their photo and brief bio. The hand sanitization protocol occurs again at the end.

Patients aren’t the only ones who get a little TLC from the pets. Staff members also enjoy the respite from a busy, stressful day by stopping to pat or cuddle with the animals. Former patient Sue Brittle was waiting to be released when one of the Pet Therapy dogs arrived on the scene. “I immediately felt my blood pressure go down when those beautiful brown eyes looked up at me,” she said. My own favorite story is of a patient who spent a long time in the ICU. Injuries kept the individual nearly immobilized the first time former Pet Therapy dog Rosie, a German Short-Haired Pointer, walked into the hospital room. The only movement the patient could make was placing a hand on Rosie’s head. Simultaneously, huge tears spilled out of the patient’s eyes.

Handler Carolyn Strong, with the program for 18 years, observed that Poppy (her current dog in the program) gets quite excited on Pet Therapy day. After visiting many patients, Poppy is exhausted and curls up to sleep for hours. Team Rascal (husband and wife team Joe and Marcia Payne with Shih Tzu mix Rascal) have been on board four years. Marcia says, “We feel honored to be able to visit the patients, doctors, nurses, and staff. Rascal is rewarded with love and treats while we are rewarded with the smiles and opportunity to talk with many in need! It’s our immense pleasure and privilege to serve as volunteers.” The comment most often heard from patients is, “This visit made my day!”

K-9s Get the Job Done The canine professionals and their handlers of the Fauquier County Sheriff’s Office STORY AND PHOTOS BY LINDSAY HOGEBOOM
D
eputy James Arrington describes his work partner in one word: “Goofy.” While many co-workers may take offense to that label, Arrington’s K-9 comrade seems to wear it proudly, simply happy to spend time with his handler and get to work. Arrington and his human colleague, Sergeant Brian Colbert — both Northern Virginia natives currently residing in the Warrenton area — have been with the Fauquier County Sheriff ’s Office for more than a decade. Arrington has been a K-9 handler since 2013, and throughout that time has had two K-9 partners: Ace, and his current dog, Bane. He says that having grown up exposed to the field, he knew from the start that being a K-9 handler was the job for him. “My dad was a K-9 handler for 30-something years for Manassas City, and we own a company that trains dogs in the area,” he says. As for Colbert, he explains that Arrington was part of the reason he became a K-9 handler. “When I worked in the jail, I’d go out and ride-along with guys, and most of the time it was with the K-9 handlers,” he says. “And then [Arrington] was actually my roommate for a little while, so I got kind of acquainted with the K-9 side of law enforcement.” Fast forward to today, and Colbert says he has loved working alongside his four-legged partner, Hank. “It’s the

All in a Day’s Work
In all, the department has five K-9 teams that are each trained in specific tasks. Bane and Hank, along with their colleague, Duco, are Belgian Malinois, Malinois-Shepherd mix, and Dutch Shepherd, respectively, and are each trained to do tracking, building searches, and criminal apprehension. “Ladee is a German Shorthaired Pointer, and then we have Katie, who is a Bloodhound,” says Arrington. “The Bloodhound only does tracking — she’ll track missing elderly people and children. She can also track criminals. The bomb dog, Ladee, does explosives, handguns, and rifles, and finds casings and stuff like that. She can [also] do the black powder explosives.” For these teams, a typical workday includes anything from training to exercising the dogs to handling calls. “It starts with us loading up for work, and [the dogs] are raring to go,” says Arrington. “They love going to work. You open that kennel door and they run right to the cars.” Once the dogs are strapped into their vests and loaded into the cars, “we come in, go to our roll call and then we usually go out — some days we’ll do training. We find some time to throw the ball and let them out, and handle calls from there,” explains Arrington. “We don’t just train here,” adds Colbert. “We’ll go to other places and get different atmospheres.” Arrington explains that a change in scenery and training with other local departments is beneficial for both the dogs and their handlers. “It’s good to let other people see how your dogs work, because…they might know something we don’t know and we can incorporate that into training our dogs,” he says.

“When we’re at work, [Hank] is my best friend,” says Colbert. “He’s right there behind us, riding in the car. Sometimes we’ll open the divider up and he’ll be able to come up.” The partnerships don’t end when the teams clock out. After work, the K-9 companions head home with their handlers. However, “Every handler treats their dog differently when they’re at home. There’s handlers out there that let [their dog] in the house, and they stay in the house with them and sleep in the bed with them,” Colbert says. “My old dog was like that,” says Arrington, “but Bane is too rambunctious. I let him in my house one time, and he was standing on my kitchen table.” Both Bane and Hank have their own up-scale outdoor living spaces, complete with heated and cooled kennels. “[But] Hank never goes into his kennel,” says Colbert. “I have a quarter-acre fenced in for him, so the only time he’s in his kennel is when he’s eating or drinking. And then he’s got two dog houses out front, so he walks to the house, stays there and lays and waits for you to walk out every morning. Every time I come out, he’s jumping at the fence.” Both at work and at home, each dogs’ distinct personality shines. Arrington says that Bane is “like a big baby. I call him the bad little kid half of the time because he knows how to push your buttons like there’s no tomorrow…. But he’s a good boy.” He grins as he says, “I have a little sticker in my car, it’s a Malinois on a wrecking ball, because that’s what he is. But he’s also very social. He is probably one of the most social dogs we have.” “[Hank is] the old man,” says Colbert. “He’s very chill until it comes time to work, and then he’s a loudmouth.” Despite the dogs’ high-drive and high-energy nature that fuels their work ethic, both Arrington and Colbert say that their K-9s favorite thing to do during their time off is sleep. When they aren’t sleeping, they can likely be found playing with their favorite toys or their other canine friends. “I have another dog that is my pet that [Hank] plays with — his name is ‘Chief ’, a Blue Heeler mixed with German Shorthaired Pointer,” says Colbert. “They get along, they play together, but [Hank] definitely gets to the point where he’s like, ‘I don’t want to do it anymore,’ and just goes and lays in his doghouse.” “I have a Lab named Luna who will take [Bane] out at the legs,” says Arrington. “Bane’s too busy looking for his ball…they’re playful. At home, you probably wouldn’t know they’re police dogs. The neighbors all know who Bane is and they love him too.”
Life After Work
The typical career of a working dog is about eight years. “Hank’s getting ready to retire,” Colbert says, and will be adopted by Colbert as a pet upon his retirement. “At the end of their career, we’re able to keep our dogs — we just have to purchase them from the county for a dollar.” “We have a choice — we don’t have to [adopt them],” says Arrington, “but I’ve never really met a handler who hasn’t. They’re like your family.”

But there are some unusual pets that live among us that go beyond the typical. Our rats Everest and Skye — named after characters in Paw Patrol — belong to my daughter Ophelia. She carries them around, loves to tuck them into bed, pretends she is a veterinarian, and builds "houses" for them from our recycling. They are most active at night; we hear them running on their wheel and chewing toys. When we first got them, she played with them in a small ball pit which they quickly discovered how to jump out of. Now, they live in the laundry room where she can shut the door and play with them safely. Everest (albino) is my daughter's favorite because she is cuddly — she will let you hold her like a baby on her back. Skye (black hooded) prefers to run on the wheel, climb, and explore. Rats are surprisingly smart, food-motivated, and can learn simple tricks. They are also very clean and reorganize their space to their liking. They eat rat kibble, a mixture of seeds and nuts, mealworms, and fresh fruits and vegetables. Pet rats generally live 2-3 years. There's no doubt they will leave two rat-shaped holes in my daughter's heart when they go.
Leo the Turtle Mike Di Silvio, Warrenton
My wife Rachel is a high school biology teacher and a student donated Leo the water turtle to her. Leo is a classroom pet but spends time at our house during breaks that are longer than a weekend. He appears to be an Eastern Painted Turtle, which is a native species. Leo gets a small amount of turtle-specific food every day and freeze dried shrimp as a treat. His life is a cycle of basking under a heat lamp and swimming in the water. He's a very active guy — any time someone approaches his tank, he'll jump off his basking platform and swim excitedly up to you. Water turtles typically live to be between 20 and 30 years in captivity.

Molly the Pig

I did a lot of research before I decided to get my pig Molly; I always wanted one because they are super smart and cute (at least I think so)! I was hoping she could be litter boxed trained, and she is, but it has to be a very large box! Molly is a very spoiled house pig weighing 45-50 pounds. She sticks to a certain routine. If I do not get up right at 6 a.m. to take her out, she oinks at the bottom of the stairs. After she does her business, she wants her breakfast and some love, then it’s back to bed. I work most of the day, so she lounges and plays with our four cats. I found a stray kitten who we named Timmy, and he became her baby! She snuggles and kisses him whenever he is near. She loves to visit our neighbors. Molly loves summer when she can take her time outside and will oink to stay out. She hates the snow when it is deep, and by deep I mean anything that rubs against her belly and makes her cold. I have to shovel a path for her. We have had Molly for six years — pigs live to be around 20 years old.
Mr. Shemp the Turkey Susan Hilleary, Warrenton
We purchased Mr. Shemp at a poultry auction at the Fauquier Livestock Exchange for the Fauquier High School Animal Science classes I teach. We went to experience the process, and we bid on him and won. He had been raised by a little girl who had to let him go; the family was very happy that he went to us rather than a dinner plate. Mr. Shemp lives in the hatchery at school with the chicks we are raising. He takes a walk several times daily and is cared for by the Intro to Animal Sciences class. The students are very attached to him, though many were afraid of him at the beginning of the year. Students clean his pen and provide fresh food and water for him daily. He lives at school year-round, and a few volunteers and I care for the animals during breaks. Mr. Shemp is very friendly and likes to be around people, strut around, and likes when people pet his head.

Reptiles

My husband is a lifelong fan of reptiles. When I met him 16 years ago, he had two snakes and I was deathly afraid of them, but after he taught me about them and how to handle them, I began to warm up. Now, we have over 35 snakes, lizards and arachnids! This is definitely my husband's passion and he takes care of them all. Feeding is dependent on that specific reptile. Snakes only eat once a week and lizards eat about every other day. Matt goes down to the "Reptile Lair" in our basement daily, making sure everyone is doing well, has water, and sufficient heat, and clean cages. You wouldn't think so, but each one of our reptiles has their own personality. Our lizards do have more "person" affection than our snakes, but all the animals know when Matt is around. They perk up and just watch him. T-Rex, our Black and White Argentine Tegu, has the biggest personality of them all. He LOVES people interaction and walking on a leash. Lizards have a life span like a dog, 10 - 15 years; snakes have a longer lifespan of 25-30 years. Snakes are in the family for a long period of time, they can follow your young child into college!
Hobbes the Ferret

Hobbes is without a doubt the most interesting animal that I have ever encountered. A ferret has a shockingly high IQ, the self-esteem of a British commando, the ethics of a mob boss, and the affection of a grandmother. Hobbes is cleverer than any border collie that I have owned – and my current border takes trash bags to the trash can and waves through the window to children as they exit the school bus. The first night at our house, Hobbes escaped and aggregated our sandals, and only our sandals (ignoring our shoes), stashing them in proper pairs under a desk. He shows an interesting array of complex emotions when we wear the sandals he now stores under a curtain (which is convenient because it is by the front door). He climbs, chases, fights, plays, reasons, shares, and emotes. Hobbes has a variety of stuffed animals that he has either pilfered or been sent by my relatives. He hides them around the house, and if moved, he returns them to their “regular place.” He sits on my car dashboard while I drive, visits stores, and loves to play on the hay bales at the battlefield park. Hobbes is now three years old; ferrets tend to live about six years – and I believe he has packed a lot of living into those three years.

eyton Tochterman, now 43, grew up in Fauquier County, attending The Hill School where he discovered a passion and raw talent for music. There, a gifted teacher and professional opera singer, Don Carter, saw the spark and fanned his creative flames by putting him onstage in the school’s talent show, where Peyton played drums on Van Morrison’s “Into the Mystic”. For two years, two mornings a week before school started, Mr. Carter mentored Peyton, teaching him songs from the Beatles, James Taylor, and The Grateful Dead, fostering in him a dedication for his musical craft and a desire to excel. Peyton, who graduated with a degree in English Writing from St. Lawrence University, stayed in hot pursuit of his dream, enjoying a 20 year professional career as a singer-songwriter and gifted raconteur, playing in 37 states, seeing much of Europe and China, and gigging in festivals, schools, on radio and TV shows, and at various performing arts venues. Home based in Charlottesville during these years, his music is traditional Americana, original and emotive, enabling him to forge connections with people from all over the globe, in all walks of life. Up in Penacook, New Hampshire, Gary Green, now 66, got his musical start as a teenager slinging his harp (slang for harmonica) in high school halls, and teaching himself to play while hitchhiking. After relocating to Charlottesville,
in 1987 Gary won the Hohner-sponsored World Harmonica Championships on the isle of Jersey in the UK, competing against world class harmonica players as a virtual unknown. Put thoughts of Bob Dylan aside—Gary’s harmonica has the subtle force and power of a keyboard, violin or lead guitar. He played the Millennium Stage at the Kennedy Center and The Grand Ole Opry in Nashville, and was part of 50 some album projects before becoming the Audio Engineer at the historic Paramount Theatre in Charlottesville. Their paths converged in 2001, when Peyton, then 22, had a big wedding gig at Ashlawn. He’d put together a stellar band, but needed a sound guy; that guy was Gary Green. While helping Gary pack up gear, Peyton noticed a couple harps on the truck seat. After talking and jamming that night, a profound friendship and musical alliance was born. Peyton and Gary played the mid-Atlantic states 5 to 10 times a year after that, until the demands of Peyton’s touring schedule and Gary’s audio engineering career took them in different directions. Then kismet intervened in 2012. The U.S. State Department, as part of a cultural outreach mission, was looking for a musician to play traditional “Americana” folk music for Afghan students, citizens, elected officials, military personnel, and diplomats (and occasionally, U.S. and allied troops). The opportunity fell in Peyton’s lap, when the

initial artist contacted declined to go. “I went for two reasons,” comments Peyton. “First, I wanted to get my own eyes on Afghanistan, and not rely on TV or newspaper accounts. Second, I had great respect for our troops serving there, and wanted to be part of it.” Peyton knew he had to choose his musical posse carefully. He needed seasoned performers who were not just technicians, but respectful travelers, calm and able to roll with the punches if things got sketchy. He called Gary. On May 26, 2012, the two (together with a third musician, Rad Lorkovic), traveled as cultural ambassadors from the Blue Ridge Mountains to the shadow of the Hindu Kush Himalaya, and the hotbed of war-torn Afghanistan. With its long history of domination by foreign conquerors from Alexander the Great and Genghis Kahn, to the Arabs, Brits and Soviets, the kindness and warm hospitality of the Afghan people and their avid thirst for Peyton’s songs and stories was astonishing. Expecting “a platoon of marines”, they instead traveled casually in an armored car, relying heavily on their Afghan interpreter and driver, forming a deep bond with both. The group played mini-concerts, as many as five a day, and gave lectures in schools, gymnasiums, universities, and other locales, practicing “diplomacy through music” over the course of a month. There was TV coverage and radio spots, and Afghan news reports across the nation complimented them. Not so with the Iranian press, who described their music as “dangerous and evil”. It was not until their return to the States that they learned Peyton had been blacklisted in Iran, which he views as a compliment. “That whole thing reflects how music is the essence of free speech, a language unto itself which can bring people from deeply different cultures together”. Safety and security were necessary concerns. “There were guns everywhere. You couldn’t walk ten feet without encountering someone in fatigues with an automatic weapon.” But rare moments of unease were far eclipsed by the enthusiasm of their Afghan hosts and audiences. In Herat, the most ancient and third biggest of Afghanistan’s cities, the group had two spectacular moments. On the roof of a secure government building, standing beside a sniper, Peyton looked out over the rugged terrain and saw a large dust bowl in the distance, its center a shimmering brilliant blue, moving steadily toward them. It was a group of 50 Afghan women, coming to watch a concert which was a dry run for their later performance at the Citadel. “When I looked out in the audience, I couldn’t find them,

until I realized they’d taken off their Burqas, and were silently weeping. They’d never seen live music before.” The second moment came when the Tochterman band, together with a handful of Afghan musicians from the newly formed Afghan Musicians’ Alliance, performed together in the first cross-cultural outdoor concert in The Citadel, believed to stand on the foundation of a fort built by Alexander the Great. The oldest building in the city, surrounded by a robust security detail, was now the site of a musical mission covered by the BBC and Reuters, televised on national Afghan TV, and celebrated as a moving tribute to the epic power of the performing arts to connect people of different cultures, in a savage but sacred place. It was the emotional apex of their journey, life altering. Peyton’s view of the world expanded, his appreciation for his personal freedoms deepened immeasurably. Weary of the endless self-promotion that comes with touring, and realizing he loved learning and teaching, he switched his career focus to education, first teaching at Field School in Charlottesville, and in a serendipitous turn of events now at the Hill School in Middleburg, his alma mater. Teaching U.S. History and World Geography, Peyton also gives private guitar lessons, hoping to pay forward what Mr. Carter instilled in him – the drive to constantly seek and improve. Raising a young family in The Plains, enjoying life in the Piedmont, and playing folk music when life allows, Peyton wants to get Gary back here to play. That should work beautifully, since Gary came home changed too, and has rededicated himself to playing harp and performing. The two musicians have a musical symbiosis obvious to anyone who’s seen them play. Look for them at local music venues, wineries and restaurants. They’re a sonic force, not to be missed.

As for pairings, Mark suggests Brochard Sancerre, the great sauvignon blanc from the Loire Valley France, for the halibut; Castello de Bossi Chanti will do well with the Veal Scallopini Marsala; and the Bordeaux classic Chateau Lassegue St. Emilion for the Fillet with Shrimp. Warrenton Main Street favorite Denim and Pearls will celebrate Valentine’s Day Friday, February 11 through Monday, February 14 with specials in addition to their regular menu, signature cocktails, and wine specials. “We always do Beef Wellington,” said owner Jenn Robinson. “We started featuring that as a Valentine’s Day special several years ago, and people loved it – so it’s our tradition now!” Other romantic choices include Peach Arugula Honey Salad with added salmon, Pan Seared Jumbo Scallops, Espresso Chili Rubbed Flank Steak, and their signature Shrimp and Grits. Start with a special Valentine’s cocktail and choose a wine for dinner. Bittersweet Frosting
Love Bites Appetizers set the tone for the meal to follow and nothing says romance like champagne. Begin your evening with a bit of the bubbly paired with shared bites of smoky oysters lovingly folded into creamy cheese. Add some water biscuits or plain crackers and, of course, succulent strawberries. Cans of smoked oysters are readily available in grocery stores everywhere and are typically near the canned tuna. MAKES ABOUT 1 CUP
There are only two ingredients in the recipe so it couldn’t be easier but, to have success, the sour cream must be at room temperature. If the sour cream is cold, the chocolate will clump. See tips below. INGREDIENTS
1 cup + 2 Tablespoons semi-sweet chocolate chips (half a 12 oz. package) 3/4 cup sour cream (at room temperature - lite or fat free not recommended) DIRECTIONS
Melt the chocolate in the top of a double boiler. Remove from heat but leave the melted chocolate over the hot water. Whisk one Tablespoon of the sour cream into the warm chocolate. The chocolate may thicken a bit at first but it will thin to a spreading consistency as you continue to whisk in the remaining sour cream one Tablespoon at a time. Cool finished frosting slightly, if necessary, for a spreading consistency.

8 oz. cream cheese (softened) 3 Tablespoon mayonnaise 4 teaspoons Worcestershire sauce 1 clove garlic (finely chopped – about ½ teaspoon) 1 (3.75 oz.) can smoked oysters in oil DIRECTIONS
Using a fork, mash oysters and oil together. In a separate bowl, blend cheese, mayo, Worcestershire sauce & garlic till smooth. Stir in the mashed oysters and oil but don’t stir them in completely. Pack into a crock. Cover and chill overnight to blend flavors.

Heart Shaped Lasagna
Cold sour cream will make the chocolate clump.
Add an extra touch of love to your best lasagna recipe by making it in a heart shaped pan. Heart shaped pans are available everywhere around Valentine’s Day. Disposable, aluminum foil ones, too. Prepare your recipe as usual (cutting the noodles to fit the heart shape of the pan) but don’t bake it. Instead, wrap it and refrigerate overnight. Next day, pop the pan into the oven. When the lasagna is ready, bring the pan to the table for serving so your Valentine can see its heart shape. Is your Valentine vegan or not into dairy? Sub the same amount of silken tofu for the ricotta called for in your recipe. No eggs needed as the tofu firms up on its own. Be sure to use silken tofu as regular tofu is not as creamy. Use vegan cheese instead of dairy parmesan and mozzarella.
A Kiss in the Dark
Use a medium size bowl that fits snuggly over a pot of simmering water so no steam can get into the chocolate and ruin it. For this recipe, melting the chocolate in the microwave is not recommended. If necessary, microwave sour cream or clumped chocolate briefly to warm slightly, then stir or whisk till smooth.
Frosting too soft to spread? Chill it very briefly to thicken.
Chocolate too thick or too firm to spread? Microwave briefly to soften then stir.
Café Framboise Cupid’s own love potion! French roast coffee and raspberry brandy. Put a shot of raspberry brandy into each cup. Add hot French roast coffee to fill. Stir in sugar, if desired. Top with whipped cream.

The rich, satin-y smooth frosting is the magic that transforms a simple chocolate cake layer into an expensive looking, pastry shop quality experience. So scrumptious yet so easy that even a beginning baker will look like a seasoned pro. Assemble the torte a day or two in advance and refrigerate it, lightly covered. Remove it from the fridge to take the chill off as you sit down to dinner. By the time you’re ready for dessert, your Kiss in the Dark will be ready for you.

1 (8 inch round) baked chocolate cake layer (purchased or homemade - unfrosted) 1/2 cup raspberry jam 1 recipe bittersweet frosting (see above) Optional garnish – fresh raspberries & powdered sugar DIRECTIONS
Place the cake layer on the serving dish. Spread top evenly with jam. Frost top (covering the jam) and sides with Bittersweet Frosting. Use the back of a spoon to create decorative swirls in the top. Refrigerate to set frosting then lightly cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate up to 2 days. At serving time, garnish slices with fresh raspberries and powdered sugar, as desired.

Who remembers a large home on Rt. 17 about 1 mile north of Delaplane that was converted to a restaurant in the 1960s called the Ponderosa and later became the national headquarters for American Youth Hostels? Local folks liked to talk about the owner prior to it becoming a restaurant whose wife would mow grass on a small tractor in the buff. Apparently she liked to mow in her full glory down close to the road.
I remember my Dad telling me what he had heard from oth er locals. It was originally built by Channing Jr. in the early 190 0s. According to local lore, his you ng wife insisted on a house tha t was the same as the doll house she had as a child. Channing Jr. was the heir to the vast Fleetwo od estate (around 3000 acres) . His grandfather and father, Joh n and Channing Sr., compiled Flee twood from 13 different farms afte r the War between the States . Channing Jr. was well liked, but reportedly did not have much of a head for business. He lost all of his fortune and Fleetwo od was sold. In later life, Channi ng worked as a plumber’s assista nt and as gas station attendant in Front Royal. He said he was never happier.
