he Kraig Kelican Memorial Scholarship has been established through a collaborative effort involving Kraig Kelican’s family, friends, the Fauquier High School community and his former classmates. Administered through the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, the scholarship serves as a tribute to Kelican, who died in September from injuries sustained in a car accident. Kelican spent 35 years at Fauquier High School, beginning as an agriculture teacher and eventually assuming the role of principal in 2020. Described by students and staff as deeply committed, Kelican was remembered for his active participation in school events and genuine care for all of his students. Senior Andrew Lerudis recalled Kelican’s caring nature and involvement with the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, stating, “I remember him taking the time to be present at school competitions. He was a kind person who cared a lot about his students.” The scholarship, managed by the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, is available to graduating Fauquier High School students this year. Applicants are required to exhibit good academic standing and a track record of school or community engagement. While the first year’s criteria remain open, future considerations might prioritize stu-

dents pursuing studies in agriculture or education, reflecting Kelican’s areas of interest. “Northern Piedmont Community Foundation will manage all accounting, history, and awards,” the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation’s Executive Director Jane Bowling-Wilson told FauquierNow. “The [Kelican] family [Kraig Kelican’s wife Susan Anderson Kelican, his daughter Kaitlin Kelley, his son Kasey Kelican, sister Kendra Kelican Madigan, and brother Kris Kelican], with an independent advisory committee, will review applications and determine who receives the award.” Interested students can obtain the scholarship application from the Fauquier High School Guidance Department, with the deadline set for March 17. While the exact award amount has not yet been determined, the scholarship will remain part of the foun-
dation’s ongoing offerings for future years. Contributions to the scholarship fund can be made at npcf.org or by sending a check payable to “NPCF,” with “Kraig Kelican Memorial Scholarship” noted in the memo line, to Northern Piedmont Community Foundation, PO Box 182, Warrenton, VA 20188. “Donations will be invested by the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation to generate returns supporting the scholarship’s cause,” said Bowling-Wilson. D
o you know any law enforcement officers? Do you know what their job involves, and why they handle situations the way they do? So many people get their impressions of law enforcement through the news or social media, and those impressions are often intimidating. Personal experiences tend to be during stressful events such as traffic violations or a knock at their door. The Warrenton Police Department (WPD) and the Fauquier County Sheriff ’s Office (FCSO) are working hard in many ways to change that by building partnerships with the community. One outreach program is the 2024 Joint Community Academy ( JCA). The JCA is not a training course to become a sworn police officer. Rather, it is a 10-week educational experience hosted by the WPD and FCSO that is open to the public to increase the understanding and trust between community members and local law enforcement. By learning what the officers do on a day-to-day basis and how they handle different situations, participants gain an appreciation for the many challenges facing law enforcement in today’s society. Taught by sworn law enforcement officials and civilian professionals through classroom lectures, demonstrations, tours, hands-on activities, and ride-alongs, the JCA

is a place where community members can learn and get to know officers in a relaxed classroom setting. Betty Compton, Volunteer Coordinator for WPD, said, “Participants have the opportunity to get to know each law enforcement officer as a person. When they’re on duty, officers are focused on their job, which is public safety. In a safe classroom environment, they can relax and share their experiences. There’s joking, laughter, and they verbally bounce off of one another. By interacting with participants, they can also acquire a greater understanding of the views and concerns of the community. It’s about building trust and understanding together.” The JCA is open to and welcomes all local Fauquier community members that are at least 18 years of age, and Compton suggested that it might be of particular interest to business owners, religious leaders, prospective officers, residents, college students, retirees, and anyone wanting to be active in the community and learn about the various aspects of the Police Department and the Sheriff ’s Office. This is not the first Community Academy (CA), but it is the first one that is coordinated jointly between the WPD and the FCSO. This presents a unique opportunity for participants to meet the staff of both organizations. Compton is not only the volunteer coordinator for the JCA, but she is also a graduate of its predecessor, the Citizen Academy, which was held in 2019 by the FCSO. “I love giving back to the community. I believe that what you give, you get back. I learned so much at the Citizen Academy and enjoyed it so much I wanted to do more, and I helped with subsequent academies as a volunteer. In 2021 the WPD Chief of Police asked me to cre-

ate the first Community Police Academy for the WPD.” Compton’s hard work led to her being named 2021 Citizen of the Year for the Center District in Fauquier County. She has since helped Law Enforcement Departments in other areas establish similar academy programs. According to Compton, one of the highlights of the whole program takes place during the last week before graduation at the FCSO Training Ground. “It’s the icing on the cake,” she said. “After all the classes, that one ties it all together. You will meet the emergency response team from the Sheriff 's office, and see the K9 unit demonstration, which is amazing, and much more.” Another not-to-be-missed experience is the ridealong. Compton said, “We encourage students to go on two ride-alongs, one during the day, and one on a Friday or Saturday night, since the two experiences are very different.” The CA program is making a difference. Law enforcement officers are finding that people are more likely to approach them and have a conversation. Compton said, “They want people to know that they are regular people too, they just put on a uniform and a badge to go out to protect our local community. There is no cost for the program, but WPD and FCSO ask that all graduates volunteer through the WPD Volunteer program at community events for 10 hours per year post-graduation. It sounds like work, but after the CA experience, volunteers find it to be a pleasure. Compton said, “Volunteers love it; it’s a chance to work side by side with law enforcement.” She said, “You can make a difference in your community. But you can’t help unless you get involved. After the Community Academy you are in a much better position to make those changes that are important to you.” Compton concluded, “One thing about it is when you go through the Community Academy you feel a part of the law enforcement family, both the WPD and the FCSO. That’s what touches me.” L

ammie Fuller of The Open Book book boutique in Old Town Warrenton caters, of course, to book lovers. It’s a cozy shop with a bright open feel with books of all sorts everywhere. Readers of any genre will find books to enjoy that have been carefully hand selected by Fuller and her staff. But book readers aren’t the only ones that gravitate to The Open Book. Fuller is as passionate about supporting local writers as she is about those who enjoy their books. The front of the shop, there is a section on the left devoted to books written by Virginia authors. Quite a few are from Fauquier County and the close surrounding areas. In addition to presenting the works of local authors on her shelves, her mission is to help them get their books to the shelves in the first place. As most writers will probably agree, writing is hard work in a competitive industry.

Becoming a successful author is about a lot more than typing out the story or other material. Good ideas and good stories help, of course, but other skills are needed to get a book from an idea into the hands of readers — ideally, a lot of readers! Think business, sales, marketing, social media, confident public speaking, and technical editing skills in addition to writing the story.

Everyone deserves to find themselves, their story, on the shelves. It is a mission that derives from a similar quote by the brilliant Toni Morrison: ‘If there’s a book that you want to read, but it hasn’t been written yet, then you must write it.’ We created the shop to provide the written word to our community and to help our community find their own way to the written word if they seek it.” —Cammie Fuller, Owner, The Open Book
To this end, Fuller has created the Book Club for Writers to help writers with these different aspects. The club has been held at the store about twice a year, running 6 weeks with one meeting a week. She has had as many as 20 members participating. That’s a lot of people for the size of the shop, but, Fuller said, “We make do”. She continued, “The Book Club for Writers is here to provide community, to connect on craft and to gain a deeper understanding of the business of writing.” It’s just like a regular book club, only the subjects of the books read and discussed are focused on the particular challenges of writers, summed up by Fuller as craft, community, and business. Books covered in past clubs include well-known books on the craft of writing, such as Bird by Bird by Anne Lamott and Writing Down the Bones by Natalie Goldberg, as well as books on the business side of the profession such as How to Resist Amazon and Why by Danny Caine and The Business of Being a Writer by Jane Friedman. Who can join the book club? Anyone! The club is attended by writers of a wide range of genres and experience levels. Some are just starting out with a concept in their minds, others are published authors with multiple books under their belt, and others are somewhere in between in the process.
Fostering community and joy of craft
Reading books about writing is all well and good, but it’s not the whole picture. There are challenges that are simply best solved by being in the company of other writers. Marvin Freeman of Warrenton has an idea and an outline of his first book, a historical fiction novel, and, as he said, “Now I just need to write the darn thing.” “The hardest part for me is discipline. It’s easy for me to find other things that need to be done around the house instead of working on my manuscript!” wrote fiction author Daniel Wheatley of Warrenton. Responses to interview questions were full of examples of things writers do to avoid writ-
ing: housework, basement cleaning, and even responding to these interview questions. Bayes joined the book club for the community aspect and finds new writing friends invaluable. “Making those personal connections are essential to make what is a rather solitary occupation truly enjoyable and not lonely,” she wrote.
More community encouragement: Write-ins
In addition to the book clubs for writers, Fuller periodically hosts a series of write-ins to provide a quiet writing time in the company of other writers. Members of the Book Club for Writers, as well as other authors in the area, enthusiastically joined in. Bayes wrote, “Being around fellow writers that are also “in the weeds” trying to finish their work and get their work out into the world is wonderful motivation to keep going.” Wheatley found it similarly helpful: “It was great meeting other writers, hearing what they’re working on, and having a specific time of the week set aside to focus on writing and craft,” he wrote.
When success comes and the work is published
And once a local author succeeds in publishing their work, Cammie is delighted to offer the book in her shop. “We’d love nothing more than to highlight each one of them, and we hope everyone here will have a book signing or release party.” But she cautioned, the big picture involves a lot more. “Having a great relationship with your local bookstore is good, but authors need to sell their books to many other bookstores, and that’s hard. But we are glad to play this part and be the cheerleaders.”

Fuller said, “We began with a 6-week session that focused on the books but we have since developed the program to include more time spent on craft and revision. Beginning with this year’s first winter session we will alternate sessions between the book club and a critique group giving participants a chance to form intimate writing partnerships with others in similar genres. Founded in 1996, the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra is a premier orchestral ensemble of the greater Piedmont region consisting of 35+ musicians from the Piedmont area, about 70 percent from Fauquier County, under music director Maestro Glenn Quader. The PSO performs five regular concerts per year, with varied programming to appeal to a wide audience. For over 25 years the PSO has been enriching, inspiring, and transforming lives through performances and educational outreach programs within the local community and beyond. One of these endeavors is the Young People’s Concert and the related Young Artists Competition. The annual competition is open by invitation to young music students in an 11-county area. Each musician submits a recording of their chosen piece, and the field is narrowed until three finalists remain. They then perform their piece live at the concert, and the judges announce the winner during intermission.

A Cycle of Replenishing Musical Energy The Piedmont Symphony Orchestra’s Young People’s Concert and Young Artists Competition BY PAM KAMPHUIS

hen Diego Quintanar-Pena’s fourth grade music teacher at Highland School took her students on a field trip to see a Piedmont Symphony Orchestra concert, it set in motion a long-held ambition. Now a high school junior, Quintanar-Pena had wanted to play the violin since the first grade. In the fourth grade, he was able to take lessons at school, and this concert sealed the deal for him. It was a Young Artists Competition concert, and he said, “A student was playing a Mendelssohn Violin Concerto Candenza, which starts out very quietly and then builds into an intricate melody that the Orchestra takes over and it was so cool to listen to that it really sparked an interest in me.” Quintanar-Pena received a violin for Christmas that year, which he played until he was able to upgrade to a newer one when he entered high school. He began taking lessons with violinist Matthew Gattuso. Gattuso himself is a product of Fauquier County and the PSO. He played with the PSO as a student musician, and then came back to Fauquier after college to become a violin instructor and joined the PSO as a full member. “It’s allowed me to feel like I’m connecting with the community in a musical way that I wasn’t expecting,” he said. Another way, of course, is mentoring Quintanar-Pena. Gattuso said, “When

Diego came to me 4 years ago, he was very much wide eyed and energetic, and I loved his sense of enthusiasm. We spent a good amount of time reworking his technique for a good foundation, and he would come to me with these obscure pieces he had found online and wanted to play. He had this way of constantly immersing himself in the culture of music, which is rare. He was constantly pushing his own boundaries, and I had to push my own boundaries to accommodate that. It was a good learning experience for me.” Last year, Quintanar-Pena competed in the PSO Young Artists Competition for the second time as a high school sophomore and won, which enabled him to attend Governor’s School last summer. He also plays as a full member in the PSO, in Gattuso’s violin section. This year at the Young People’s Concert, the PSO will perform The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, which many will be familiar with through Disney’s® Fantasia. According to Gattuso, the piece draws people in because it’s extremely cinematic in the sense it follows a storyline, the music flows through different themes and it’s entertaining to listen to. “It’s nice to see a circular progression of things coming back to where they started. Greg Huddleston
G
regory H. Huddleston, beloved husband, uncle, brother, friend, and educator, left an indelible mark on the hearts and minds of students, colleagues, and an entire community of family and friends. It is with profound sadness that his family shares his passing on December 29, 2023, due to complications from a car accident on December 12, 2023. Born on July 26, 1947 in Montgomery, West Virginia, Gregory graduated from Montgomery High School in 1965 and went on to study education at West Virginia Tech. Upon graduation, he moved to northern Virginia, embarking on a career as a high school educator that spanned over 36 years. During those years he was dedicated to shaping the future of countless aspiring journalists and writers. He was not just a teacher; he was a mentor, a guide, and a source of unwavering support for students navigating the complexities of journalism, writing, and high school life. While teaching at Osburn High School in 1970, the lovely Betty Louise Kessler, a fellow West Virginian, caught his eye and he began a note-passing campaign to win her affection. They were married on June 14, 1974, in Hico, West Virginia. They enjoyed 49 1/2 years of friendship and love. He was known to tell friends and family that his only regret was that he didn’t marry Betty sooner. Beyond the classroom, Gregory was an accomplished journalist in his own right, working as Assistant Editor of [Rappahannock Media’s] The Piedmont Virginian magazine for many years. He was also a gifted painter and skilled pianist who enjoyed using the arts to express his unique perspectives
Call it serendipity, fate, providence...whatever. But it happened that Greg retired as a high school English teacher at about the same time that I was starting a magazine called The Piedmont Virginian. A mutual friend put us in touch, and a valued professional relationship and personal friendship was born. I love to tease, but Greg gave as good as he got. I’ll never forget his wit and musings about WWWD — “what would Walter do.” More seriously, he made the magazine an in-demand showcase for regional artists. And in the process, he explored his own considerable gifts as a painter. His portraits of Piedmont landscapes and still lifes, not to mention the dogs he loved, are mirrors to his soul, a soul that will live forever. I’m so grateful that our lives — along with that of his beloved Betty — intersected when and how they did. And I’m now sad, unspeakably sad. — WA LT E R N I C K L I N
on life. He served on the board of directors for the Piedmont Symphony Orchestra, and his artwork adorns the walls of many friends’ homes in the Manassas and Casanova area. He loved summer visits to Maine and later to their beach home on Chicatogue Island, VA. An avid reader, masterful cook, and skilled gardener, Gregory was a present-day Renaissance gentleman. A long-time member of Grace Episcopal Church in Casanova, VA, Gregory served on the Vestry, where he was responsible for welcoming newcomers and promoting the uniqueness of Casanova and the church’s role in the community. He also assisted with the designing of the church labyrinth, where he found great calm and solace during daily walks. He actively participated in Casanova chili cook-offs and other charity fundraisers. Gregory is predeceased by his mother and father and cherished sister-in-law Carol Cartisano Walus. He is survived by his wife, Betty Kessler Huddleston of Casanova, his Russell terrier, Maxwell,

I was in Mr. Huddleston’s journalism class and became co-editor of the school newspaper my senior year. He was one of my favorite teachers. He loved music and took up piano lessons. I found out later that he was quite a painter as well! My students are very familiar with one of my favorite Mr. Huddleston quotes. “Hello, scholars!” is a salutation I use daily. My other favorite was uttered when we were hard at work and relatively silent. Walking into the room, all one could hear were the sounds of red pens marking up printed drafts or the clacking of keyboards on the late 90s iMac computers that lined the walls. “What is this chaos?!” Mr. Hudd would say sarcastically, stifling a smile. Mr. Huddleston was beloved. We worked hard for him because we cared about our product and he cared about us. Thank you, scholar. You will be missed! — N AT E M I L L E R
Greg touched the lives of so many students and so many in the community over the years. I was his editor-in-chief at C.D. Hylton High School for two years. He took our newspaper staff to NYC. He was a mentor to us. He was always ready for anything we did or said with a sarcastic remark which we all loved. … Love you, Greg. I have the honor and privilege of having “Mr. H” - as I always called him - [as a journalism teacher] for 3 years: 1 year at Osbourn Park and 2 years at C. D. Hylton High School where I was our school’s first ever sports editor. Mr. H’s legacy and encouragement gave me the confidence to major in mass communications and write for multiple college newspapers, intern at CBS, and accept my first job out of JMU in the newspaper industry… My ability to effectively communicate (as I have been told!) - orally and in written form - … is due to a high school journalism teacher who… saw a young kid with potential. Teachers are such a treasure in this country and their impacts often will last a lifetime. My heart hurts to the core that he has passed. A life well lived, Mr. H. I met Greg in 2008 when I joined the staff of The Piedmont Virginian and immediately loved working with him. His dry sense of humor could always be counted on to enliven meetings. I was a new art director, still working to improve my knowledge of editorial design, and Greg would sometimes drive me crazy with his (much needed) input on both visual presentation and editorial perfection. To say his standards were high doesn’t even begin to describe it. I’m not even sure the English language contains a suitable adjective. Greg usually wrote articles on two subjects: art and pets (mostly dogs). He’d write other articles if needed, but those were the things he cared about most. He wrote flawlessly and proofread, it seemed, with a microscope. When I transitioned to writing articles, I always strove, and still do, to emulate his values.

As an artist, I always held Greg's painting skills in very high regard. His paintings were in the impressionist style, accomplished by short, quick strokes and bright colors. His love of nature was projected not only through his beautiful and varied paintings but also through his spectacularly landscaped yard, and we bonded over our shared love of dogs. Although our artistic styles were different, he became a mentor to me as an artist and encouraged me to always practice my craft for at least 10 minutes a day, no matter what. I would ask for his critique, and he would always tell me to just go by my judgment. Despite his tendency towards self-deprecation, he consistently uplifted others, providing me with the confidence to share my art.

Library Punches Above its Weight with Help from Local Talent BY ROBIN EARL FOR FAUQUIER COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
S
ometimes success comes not from a flash of inspiration, but from being able to recognize opportunities when they present themselves. Three new library programs have been developed by seizing on ideas from local residents offering to share their talents and passions with their neighbors. Fauquier County Library Director Maria Del Rosso said, “The community has so many interesting, talented, experienced people who are willing to give of their time and energy to present these programs. They make our lives better and richer. It’s a win-win all around.”
Sundays at Two Conservationist Doug Larson and longtime local journalist Lou Emerson are the impetus behind Sundays at Two, a quarterly conversation with Fauquier residents who have distinguished themselves in the arts, community affairs, education or business. Del Rosso approached Emerson in 2022 when Brian Noyes, former owner of the Red Truck Bakery in Warrenton and Marshall, published his most recent cookbook. “We thought maybe Lou could interview Brian, and that was the seed to bring Sundays at Two forward,” she said. In 2023, the library presented two other interviews, with tireless land use activist Hope Porter and current Fauquier County

Superintendent of Schools Dr. Major Warner. Emerson said that the Porter interview was standing room only and the audience was fully engaged. “We’ve had good audience participation. These are really bright people asking good questions.” He said he has written about Porter and Warner many times over the years, but was still surprised at times during the interviews. “I have known Hope for a long time -- and argued with her a lot over the years! She grew up during The Depression and had no formal education before age 10, but she’s been an incredible force in this county.” He said that before his interview with Warner, “I went back and researched school superintendents in the county. Major is the only Fauquier native to serve as superintendent going back to at least the 1960s; he grew up in a house with no running water. Major talked at the 2023 Convocation about how he was influenced by his kindergarten teacher, Mrs. Putnam, and how she still keeps track of his career. “I gently asked a question about race, and got an amazing, articulate answer.” Emerson said he is having fun steering the conversations. “I do some preparation, and try to intertwine their personal stories and accomplishments.” Larson, former vice president of the Piedmont Environmental Council, uses his in-depth knowledge of Fauquier County and his personal connections to secure guests for Sundays at Two. He said that plans for 2024 include conversations with world-renowned muralist Craig McPherson of Orlean (Feb. 25) and Sir Peter Crane, who manages Oak Springs Garden Foundation in Upperville. Larson was pleased to be able to book McPherson. “He did a series of murals at the American Express building in New York City. I’ve seen it. It’s

absolutely breathtaking in its scope.” He continued, “When I approached him about Sundays at Two, he said ‘yes’ and I spent a couple of hours with him in his studio. He was gregarious; he will be a terrific speaker. He’s the perfect example of people living in this community who have flown under the radar. He’s known around the world and his work is in major museum collections.” Larson said he would love to schedule Davóne Tines, a Fauquier native who has made his mark in the world of opera. The county has its share of prominent journalists too, said Larson, “… or maybe we’ll include someone from the political world.” Larson said he has already fielded suggestions from the community about potential speakers for the second half of 2024. “The response has been universally positive from the audience. After the conversations, audience members will stand around to chat and ask further questions. It’s just a great community event.”
Non-Fiction Book Club Bob Jacobs, who taught history as an adjunct professor at James Madison University for more than three decades and at Fauquier High School for 25 years, is spearheading a book club focused on works of non-fiction. He gets a strong assist from Daryl Jackson, reference librarian. “Daryl does a great job helping to pick the books, and he writes up summaries after the book club sessions. It’s a tremendous recap of the discussion,” Jacobs said. Del Rosso said that Jacobs’ reputation as a history scholar is “legendary,” so it’s no surprise that the books he discusses are impactful. Jacobs has challenged book club participants to read And There Was Light: Abraham Lincoln and the American Struggle by Jon Meacham; Notre-Dame: The Soul of France by Agnès Catherine Poirier, and Midnight in Chernobyl: The Untold Story of the World’s Greatest Nuclear Disaster by Adam Higginbotham. Jacobs said he chose “Midnight in Chernobyl” with some trepidation. “The degree of difficulty is high. There are a lot of Russian names, a fair amount of chemistry and physics, and there are a lot of moving parts. I sent them prompts with some chronology and questions that would help lead them through it.” At 77, Jacobs describes himself as pre-electronic. Because the book club is held in the middle of the day, it attracts other retirees who may have been raising children when Chernobyl happened. “They may have been cognizant of some facts, but not absorbed

the specifics. Like them, I was too busy to dig into it when it happened. “It’s not an easy book, but I’m glad I read it,” he said. Jacobs said he felt it was an especially important choice since Russia is in the headlines every day. Like the other books chosen, Midnight in Chernobyl has lessons for modern-day readers. “There were red flags all over the place, but there are all kinds of reasons people ignore reality.” Meacham’s book about Lincoln’s struggle to bring a divided country together might have a few lessons for us today too, he said. Jacobs senses that book club participants are enjoying the monthly discussions. He added, “I just think we have the greatest little library. It’s definitely punching above its weight. This book club is just one more example of that.” Jacobs, who said he is in the process of writing his memoirs, said he hasn’t read all the books the group will be tackling in 2024, “but I try to stay one step ahead of them.”
The Naturalist Is In Several local pre-schoolers were delighted to meet Bob Bessette at the Warrenton library Jan. 10 during the branch’s The Naturalist Is In program. The children got to hold different rocks, feel an animal pelt and peruse resource books for pictures of snakes. “Some snakes can hurt you,” Bessette told 3-year-old Ben. “You don’t want to pick up snakes you find in the woods.” The little boy was fascinated with the shark teeth on display, but was afraid to touch them for fear they might bite him. Bessette was reassuring. The Naturalist Is In program meets once a month at each of the county’s three libraries. Bessette shares shifts with Dorothy Tepper and Tom Gill. Bessette is trained as a Virginia Master Naturalist, which requires 40 volunteer

He joked that The Naturalist Is In is the product of his desire to rack up all his volunteer hours in an air-conditioned environment. “Being an old guy, what better place could there be than the library? In a library, you don’t get wet or cold.” Bessette proposed the program to Del Rosso, who pursued a grant from the PATH Foundation to pay for a “Naturalist Collection”of Bessette-approved reference books and guides for each of the Fauquier County Library branches, along with a traveling portfolio of resources and hands-on artifacts to spur interest in the natural world. When the naturalist is in, Bassette helps library visitors understand how to use the Naturalist Collection and answers their questions. Bessette said he talks to people about the full range of natural cycles -- from plants to animals, from weather to geology, from food to improving natural habitat. He can also direct them to outside sources and support to address specific concerns they might have – how to get rid of troublesome geese on a farm, how to identify a tiny lizard with a blue tail, or what foods can be foraged from the woods. Bessette developed his appreciation for the natural world during a four-year-stint as a state park ranger. “I would always be sticking tree frogs and lizards in my pockets,” he said. A physicist by nature, his career was spent in the energy industry working on environmental issues. Bessette has 19 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, so working with the children who come into the library is especially rewarding. “It’s amazing how smart some of these youngsters are,” he said. “One boy, he was 9 or 10 years old, knew more about these rocks than I did. I gave one little girl a little piece of Fool’s Gold to take home, and she was so excited.” About 16 people will stop by during a typical three-hour The Naturalist Is In shift; so far, the program has seen about 250 adults and children visit the display. Bessette believes the community appreciates the effort. At his most recent visit to Warrenton, one library patron tapped Bessette on the arm and told him, “This is really great what you are doing for the kids. Thank you.” L

e affectionately call him ‘our little grumpy old man,’ said Kayla Johnson of her 14-year-old Shih Tzu/Chihuahua mix Samson, winner of this year’s Cutest Pet Contest. Samson has lived with Kayla and her husband Jesse since he was 12 weeks old and barely 3 pounds, so small he was afraid to jump off a curbstone. “His personality as a geriatric dog has really come through,” Kayla said. “He’s stubborn in his own lovable way, and he just likes to do things on his own terms. He’s very particular.” Also known as “the Lewis and Clark explorer” due to his lifelong habit of checking the whole large yard every day no matter the weather, Samson shares his family with Tucker, a 5-year-old miniature poodle/Shih Tzu.

A
s a child, Wanda Payne-Banks, owner of Studio 22, the new salon and spa in Warrenton, always loved styling hair, and she always had someone to practice on: her mother, aunts, and sisters. It seemed natural to pursue a career in cosmetology right after high school. But that’s not what happened. Her road to her dream job had a few detours. Payne-Banks, who now lives in Warrenton, grew up in Rappahannock County, the daughter of hard-working parents who instilled that value in her. Her first detour was when her father recommended that she go to college instead. Her second detour occurred quickly after that when she became pregnant with her daughter Lauren. As a single mom, she quit college to work and take care of her little girl.
Life with Lauren: Challenges and Joy
When Lauren was about 9 months old, Payne-Banks realized something was wrong. Lauren wasn’t meeting any of the developmental milestones for her age, such as pulling herself up. And the symptoms only increased with age as Lauren didn’t crawl or talk. After several years of searching for help for her daughter, Lauren was diagnosed with Rett Syndrome at the age of 4. It was a devastating, fatal diagnosis. Lauren was given a life expectancy of 5 more years with severe neurological impairments affecting nearly every aspect of life. Lauren would not have the ability to walk or speak. The doctor put Payne-Banks in touch with the Rett Syndrome Foundation, a wealth of information and connections to people who were also on her journey, which she found extremely helpful in the following years. Despite Lauren’s limitations, Payne-Banks was determined to give Lauren the best and most normal life possible, and not to shelter her. She took Lauren everywhere with her – to the mall, to a Backstreet Boys concert (one of Lauren’s favorites), to the beach, and enrolled her in school.

Lauren was always so happy. Even though she never said a word, she could light up a room “Lauren was always so happy. Even though she never said a word, she could light up a room,” said Payne-Banks, “and you knew when she didn’t like something (like country music) when she rolled her eyes.” Beating the odds given at her diagnosis, Lauren lived more than twice as long as expected, passing away from pulmonary complications at the age of 15. “A piece of my heart will always be missing. But without a doubt, Lauren made me the person who I am today. She taught me how to love unconditionally and give grace. I have no regrets,” said Payne-Banks.

Life After Lauren: Old Dreams Awakened
After Lauren was gone, Payne-Banks, now married and with a young son, started pondering what to do with the rest of her life. Caring for Lauren and working to support her had been more than a full-time job. Now what? Payne-Banks’s first thought was to go back to school. She attended the Paul Mitchell school in Woodbridge and at last began the career she dreamed of as a young girl. Payne-Banks first worked at a local salon in Warrenton where she could learn, contribute, and gain experience. She also enjoyed teaching and mentoring the younger staff in the trade. After 9 years, the next career move would require her to commute to one of the company’s salons in Northern Virginia. But Payne-Banks didn’t want to leave the clientele and local business relationships she had built in the area. Although it would be a big step, Payne-Banks began to think of opening her own salon. “I felt that I could do so much more if I had my own place. I wanted to be able to hold events and give back to the community,” said Payne-Banks. So, with the support of her family, she took that leap of faith, starting the process in January, 2023. With the help of Christine Kriz at the Small Business Development Center at Laurel Ridge Community College, Payne-Banks developed a business plan and Studio 22 opened for business in August, 2023.
Studio 22: Lauren’s Legacy
To honor Lauren, Payne-Banks named Studio 22 in her memory. “The studio gained its name from Lauren. She was born on August 22, 1995, and she gained her angel wings on January 22, 2011. The crown over the “22” represents Lauren, and the color purple is the color for Rett Syndrome,” Payne-Banks said. With mostly 5-star reviews on Google, Studio 22 is a full-service salon offering all hair services, massages, waxing services, facials, and lash extensions. Their mission, instilled by Payne-Banks, is to have everyone who comes

In addition to growing the salon, she continues to take a variety of training to keep up with the latest trends and skills and plans to possibly start teaching classes next year for Wella Professionals, an international training and beauty supply company. To keep her staff growing in skills, she personally trains and mentors them as well as bringing in other experts in the field to teach classes.
Giving Back In December Wanda held a “Shop for a Cause” event at the salon where 10 local vendors came to showcase and sell their products, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Rett Syndrome Foundation. The vendors were a mix of family, friends, and clients, testifying to Wanda’s passion for relationship and community.
Looking Ahead
Payne-Banks plans to continue her relationship with the Rett Syndrome Foundation, and with local families who are affected. Her passion is to give back whenever she can and raise awareness in her community about Rett Syndrome. While the salon is a place of business, Payne-Banks wants it to serve another purpose: a refuge. Pivoting for Health Humble Hydroponics nurtures indoor gardeners BY SUE BALDANI
A
fter Dwayne Bowman started his online business, Humble Hydroponics, in October of 2020, he realized that COVID was providing him an opportunity to change the dynamic to help people during the lockdown. Originally supplying gardening tools such as automatic watering systems, grow tents, lighting, and an array of soil nutrients geared toward recreational cannabis growers, he pivoted to supporting indoor vegetable gardeners. “People wanted and needed good vegetables, but they were trying to isolate and avoid the grocery stores. And even if they did go, the stores may not have had a good vegetable selection anyway. I wanted to support people converting to indoor gardening so they could be successful and enjoy healthy foods without having to leave their homes.” The feedback he’s received has been very rewarding. “One of my personal favorites is a gentleman who gardens for his wife's health,” said Bowman. “Every month he sends me pictures, which I'm constantly posting and bragging about. His wife harvests about two full salads a day out of a 4’x4’ tent that he and I personally designed.” “I used demonstration models on our social media platforms, and the result was just mind blowing,” he said. “The stigma of hydroponics started changing within my personal community too, which was great for growth and development.” He also wanted to find a way to lengthen the shelf life of produce. “We bought a freeze dryer because we wanted to freeze dry some herbs and spices, and we also started breaking down tomatoes and onions into tomato powder and onion powder.” In September of 2023, Humble Hydroponics expanded from an online-only presence to a brick and mortar store in Old Town. While the website is great because it allows the flexibility and mobility to support customers quickly and efficiently, Bowman loves renting a physical store where he can meet his customers in person. “Getting back to having people in front of you talking

is amazing,” he said. “So many people come into the shop to see what we’re selling and who we are, and they're also bringing this wealth of background history of the building. Given the architecture, I'm dating it to the early 1800s, but I honestly don't know. It’s very, very old.” He's been told it’s been everything from a hippie head shop in the 1970s to a doll shop many years before that. Recently, the store began offering something different that adults and children can both enjoy – freeze-dried candies. “I was down in Louisiana fishing with a friend, and his son came out of a shop with this tiny bag of freeze-dried Skittles®. I looked at the price and it was astronomically out of the ballpark.” That’s when the light bulb went off and once again his entrepreneurial spirit kicked in. Bowman knew he could make these candies for a lot less and offer them to local customers. He could even ship them at a reasonable cost.

“When I see a need, I try to find an avenue to get there,” he said. One of the most popular choices is the Jolly Rancher candies, or what he calls Jolly Puffs. “It's like cotton candy,” said Bowman. “I've always loved Jolly Rancher, but I currently have braces, so I can’t eat them. With the freeze dryer, not only can I enjoy them, but there's no fear of breaking or moving anything in my teeth.” People who have bridges and crowns can safely enjoy this version too. He also freeze dries holiday candies, but his and his 7-year-old daughter’s favorite is the freeze-dried fruit. “It's a great snack, and it's healthy and delicious. It takes the whole texture and flavor to a different level. We do strawberries, mango, pineapple, apple and anything else we can get. It's a good way to get that sweet in without

that extra sugar, and it's all natural.” Bowman offers freeze-dried vegetables such as microgreens as well. “They're healthy, and kids and adults love them.” Whether candy, fruits or vegetables, he said freeze drying dynamically enhances the flavors because it takes saliva and rehydrates the food. When parents come in with their kids, he wants them to know that their children are getting a safe product. “We don’t, of course, retail anything with THC or cannabis infusion in it,” he said. He recognizes that there’s sometimes a stigma attached to coming into a store like his, but he wants parents to feel comfortable. “I just want my community to know that they're safe in my hands. If there's a concern, I'm all ears.” Bowman, who grew up in Fauquier County, is happy to live and work locally. “We want to support our community because when you do that, the community supports you. I want to give back, or as we say, grow Fauquier.” A U.S. Army veteran who served eight years of active duty, he was thankful to return home. Today, he and his second wife, Lindsay, live in Bealeton. In addition to his young daughter, he has two children with his first wife. While busy running Humble Hydroponics, Bowman also works full time for a municipal government. ultiple studies have shown that interacting with dogs can elevate levels of serotonin and dopamine, which calm and relax us, especially in stressful situations. Dr. Jamie Childress, a dentist for 18 years, understands this well. A trip to the dentist is often fraught with fear. “Most of it comes from a prior bad experience, plus the sounds,” she said. “People tell me all the time that the sound of the drill is bothersome. Dentistry also involves a huge invasion of personal space.” Fortunately for the patients who come to her practice, Warrenton Dentistry, there is a panacea for this anxiety. It comes in a fluffy and friendly 15-pound package. Charleston Peaches, more commonly known as Charlee, is an 8-year-old Cavalier King Charles Spaniel whose job it is to cuddle and comfort patients, both young and old. Originally adopted for Dr. Childress’s then 3-year-old daughter, Piper, who was experiencing an anxiety disorder, Charlee started going to work with her dentist mom at the age of 12 weeks. “She was only two or three pounds when we got her, and I couldn’t leave her home all day because she needed to go out every two hours.” Dr. Childress figured she could keep Charlee in a crate in the back and no one would ever know. That was how it started, but crate life didn’t last long. “She

was so stinkin’ adorable that there was no hiding her. As soon as we took her out, a patient would see her, or the staff would want to play with her. That progressed very quickly into a patient holding her in the waiting room and then just wanting to continue holding her. She would just lay on their laps while they were having one of their procedures and that became a trend super quickly.”

When Dr. Childress saw how much her patients were benefiting from having Charlee with them, she had her formally trained as a therapy/emotional support dog when she was five months old. “Charlee absolutely loves her job and takes her responsibilities to heart,” she said. “She loves to greet patients as they come into the office and to sit in their laps while they’re receiving dental care. When we were shut down for COVID, she was so depressed because she wasn't fulfilling her purpose in life.” Charlee was happy to get back to work and loves having her ears rubbed and being pet by patients and staff alike. Occasionally, scenarios arise when more than one patient will want Charlee at the same time. “Our office has grown a lot in the last eight years, and we've doubled our space and the number

“having her snuggled up in your lap is a calming and welcome distraction” of patients that we're seeing at one time. So now we have to tell patients to reserve her when they schedule their appointments.” Dr. Childress never foresaw how little Charlee would have such a big impact on her practice. “It really created a niche, and we probably get more new patients because of her than anything else.” Of course, the dental care provided at Warrenton Dentistry by Dr. Childress, sister-in-law Dr. Sarah Garris, and Dr. Tyler Antonelli, along with her compassionate and welcoming staff, also have a lot to do with the growth.
The practice provides full-scope dental care ranging from simple cleanings and fillings to more complex oral surgery, cosmetic services and restoration needs. “None of this would work without my team,” said Dr. Childress. “Everyone is all hands on deck, making sure all of Charlee’s needs are taken care of. Charlee has about 10 mommas at the office, and she loves it that way!” Added Warrenton resident, Prudence Sheffield, “Warrenton Dentistry has a fantastic team of people, and their therapy dog Charlee puts them over the top!
She is sweet, affectionate, and of course, adorable. Whether you have anxiety about going to the dentist or just like dogs, having her snuggled up in your lap is a calming and welcome distraction.” Becky Fitzwater of Bealeton agrees. “Warrenton Dentistry is an amazing practice with tremendous dentists, fabulous staff, and state-of-the art facility and equipment. If you need kisses, she’s got you covered.” Dr. Childress loves being able to serve the town where she grew up, and now she and her husband Billy are also raising their children there. “I married my high school sweetheart, and he and I have so many connections in town. It just feels like family.” Her son, Caleb, who started helping out at the practice when he was 14, plans to follow in his mother’s footsteps and work alongside her one day. “I always loved the environment and as I got older, I started to watch what they were doing,” he said. While Charlee will continue to provide patients love and support, she now has some help. Ginger, another Cavalier King Charles Spaniel and a distant cousin of Charlee, joined the practice in January. y dog is the luv of my life. Oh, I love my husband and children but not like I love my dog. He is my main squeeze. And my dog loves me no matter what. He’s always excited to see me and covers me with kisses when I come home. He never has a bad day and is right there when I need a pup talk. My dog never thinks about himself. Just a pat on the head and a tasty treat is all the attention he ever requires. If I’m too busy or forget, he’ll wait patiently, never holding a grudge. Yup, I love my dog. That’s why I spoil him – especially on Valentine’s Day. A tasty treat is the love language he understands. Let’s get into the kitchen!
Canine Cookies I have never met a dog who didn’t luv cookies! These easy, homemade canine cookies are made with real ingredients – the kind you already have on your pantry shelf. What makes these cookies canine friendly is that they are made with no added sugar or salt and are very low in fat which, when you think about it, is the way dietitians want us to eat as well. Do we eat this healthfully? No. We overdo sugar, fat and salt every chance we get. But when it comes to our BFF, we make sure they eat right. 2/3 cup all purpose flour (plus extra for rolling) 3 Tablespoons old fashioned oatmeal (dry – uncooked) 2 Tablespoons smooth, natural peanut butter** 3 Tablespoons unsweetened applesauce 1 egg PEANUT BUTTER COOKIE INGREDIENTS
½ cup whole wheat flour (plus extra for rolling) ¼ cup smooth, natural peanut butter** 2 Tablespoons unsweetened applesauce 2 Tablespoons unsalted or low salt broth (beef, chicken or vegetable) SAME DIRECTIONS FOR BOTH COOKIES
Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line cookie sheets with baking parchment. Mix ingredients. Roll out ¼“ thick on lightly floured surface. Cut into desired shapes and place 1 inch apart on lined cookie sheets. Bake till brown on the bottom and dry to the touch – 15 to 18 minutes. Cool on rack. BAKER’S TIPS

**Use smooth, natural peanut butter. Other peanut butters may have added sugar and/or xylitol, which is a substitute sweetener that is poisonous to dogs. Great Gravy Who doesn’t love a great tasting gravy on something yummy to eat? Gravy makes everything better! MAKES ABOUT 2 ½ CUPS INGREDIENTS
3 cups water 1 pound ground meat (turkey, lean beef or chicken) 4 oz. chicken liver ½ cup frozen peas and carrots DIRECTIONS
Put ingredients into a medium pot. Bring to boil. Simmer (partially covered) until meat is cooked and water is reduced by half - about 30 minutes. Cool then refrigerate until any fat has solidified and risen to the top. Remove fat and discard. Puree remaining mixture and liquid. Add additional water if needed for desired consistency. Divide into serving size portions and store in freezer. Thaw for serving and stir into or use to top dog’s food.

¾ cup plus 2 Tablespoons all purpose flour ½ cup whole wheat flour ¼ cup rye flour ¼ cup corn meal ½ cup cracked wheat cereal (like Wheatena - uncooked) ¼ cup milk powder (dry) 1 (.25 oz.) package instant or active dry yeast ¼ cup dried parsley 1 cup low salt or salt free broth (chicken, beef or vegetable) DIRECTIONS

Coarsely mash banana. Fold in yogurt. Divide into 4 portions. Serve immediately or partially freeze till slushy. Store remaining portions in the freezer thawing as needed.

Preheat oven to 325 degrees. Mix all ingredients. Form into a log 9 inches long X 1 inch high on parchment lined cookie sheet. Bake till set but not brown – about 25 minutes. Cool on pan 3 to 5 minutes. Using a serrated knife, cut log into 1/8 inch thick slices. Return slices to pan, laying them on their sides.

Carrot Pup-Cup-Cakes Throw a party for your doggy’s birthday with the best, canine friendly cupcakes in town. Frost ‘em with a creamy, peanut buttery, pumpkin-y, sugar free icing. They’ll stay fresh in the fridge for a few days or stash them in the freezer for longer storage. When my pup has his pals over for brunch, I serve these sans frosting for gorgeous muffins that round out every menu. However you serve them, they are oh-so-yum! Note: When offering ingredients unfamiliar to your pup, it’s always a good idea to check with your vet beforehand. MAKES ABOUT 8 U S E S A S TA N DA R D C U P C A K E PA N ( 2 ¾ I N C H ES I N D I A M E T E R X 1 ½ I N C H E S D E E P ) A N D C U P CA K E PA P E R S CUPCAKE INGREDIENTS

ebruary, the shortest month of the year, famously hosts one particular holiday centered around romance. That day, of course, is Saint Valentine’s Day. Sometimes, detractors have tried to besmirch its reputation, accusing it of being exclusionary to those who are single. Saint Valentine’s Day holds each stage of pursuit close as a celebration of every moment throughout the lifespan of a love story. And what does love do but bring people together, and what brings people together better than cocktails? For the hopeful still looking, we have the Strawberry Aperol Spritz, light and bubbling with excitement for the future. To follow, the perfect drink for a first date or a first anniversary, a joy to the senses, either easing nervous anticipations or accentuating the present passions, The Cumbelich will see you through. To top it off, we have the Clover Club—rich, full, and with enduring flavor, a flavor that’s kept you entranced through the highs and the lows of a love that’s stayed together all these years. The Cumbelich 1.5 oz. London Dry Gin 1 oz. Crème de Noyaux .75 oz. Lemon Juice .25 oz. Rich simple syrup 1 Dash of Angostura Aromatic Bitters 2 Dashes of Orange Bitters
Strawberry Aperol Spritz 3 Strawberries 3 oz. Aperol 6 oz. Prosecco 2 oz. Club Soda Muddle the strawberries in the bottom of a wine glass, then add the ingredients and stir.
Add all the ingredients into a shaker tin with ice, shake, and then strain into a cocktail glass. Garnish with a lemon twist.
Clover Club 2 oz. gin .5 oz. lemon juice, freshly squeezed .5 oz. raspberry syrup 1 egg white Garnish: 3 raspberries Add the ingredients into a shaker tin with no ice and shake very hard. This technique is called a dry shake. After the dry shake, add ice and shake hard again. Finish by fine straining into a cocktail glass and garnishing with 3 raspberries stabbed through with a cocktail pick.
