SPECIAL NOTE FROM THE EDITOR We strive to be a community magazine and to serve the community. While we try to get out and find interesting people and businesses and ideas, we simply can’t know everyone and everything that’s going on. We encourage readers to reach out to us with story ideas or even just comments. Some of our best articles have been reader suggestions. So let us know what you’d like to read. More business? More people? More food and recipes? More history? Let us know and we can work it in! This magazine is as much yours as it is ours.

ifteen years ago we brought home two Border Collie puppies. We have since found out that having two young puppies at the same time is not recommended because it’s harder to train them. Anyway, they grew up playing with each other and the other dogs, which kept them all busy and seemed great to us. Then our dog pack decreased as we lost them one by one, including one of the Border Collies. Now, Riley is an only dog, which he actually seems to prefer. But since he was alone, we thought we should play with him so he didn’t get lonely. But then we realized that we’d never taught him to play with people. He didn’t know how. Tennis balls, frisbees, all the things that are synonymous with Border Collies simply didn’t interest him. He liked the attention, of course, but was amused and mystified as to what we were trying to do. So when we were putting together the Sweet Sweet Summertime issue, we interviewed Julia Carney from the Mountainside Montessori School. And one thing she said made sense to me. She said that our younger generation has grown up having fun differently than previous generations. They tend to do it with technology instead of physical and outdoor play. So, in cases like today when the summer seems endless, we want to get our kids out of their devices at least for a little bit and come into the real world. But, she noted, in a lot of cases we haven’t taught them how to do it. We might have to show them that spraying each other with a hose or wading in the creek catching minnows with their hands, (or, say, teaching their dogs how to play), can be fun too by doing it with them. And we might have a good time too. Summertime is the perfect time to get out and play. Our restaurants and shops and wineries are opening back up, and Main Street looks so festive with the outdoor dining set up (I hope they keep it that way, and then they can dress it up and make it look even nicer). Shenandoah National Park is open again, and more locally we have Crockett Park and the Riverside Preserve and many other places to get outside. So let’s all make it a point to have fun this summer! (Properly socially distanced, of course)

ur high school and college graduates missed out on a big graduation ceremony with their classmates this year, as well as other graduation traditions and celebrations. Thanks to the huge efforts of all three High Schools, they were able to have individual ceremonies, which were also special in a different way. At Lifestyle, we know a lot of these young people and wanted to provide a little more fanfare to help make this season special for them. And while the graduates featured here are certainly not all of those in Fauquier County, we wish every single solitary member of the Class of 2020 the best of luck in all their future endeavors.

f you are walking down Main Street on any given weekday morning, you might just run into Jean O’Brien, who will almost certainly meet you with a smile. O’Brien, who is a new resident of Warrenton as of last February, spent years falling in love with Warrenton as she passed through on her way to visit her daughter in Amissville before finally finding the perfect place in the historic district to call home. “I walk downtown all the time and people smile and talk to you when you walk by,” O’Brien said. “The restaurants, the business owners, and every place I’ve gone has been very engaging, open, and receptive to me as a newcomer.” After years working in HR in Northern Virginia, she decided to start her own company in 2001. Her company focuses on a wide range of services focused on enhancing clients’ careers, including etiquette classes, career transition coaching, public speaking
and presentation training and assistance, executive leadership, and more. “My background is very people-oriented,” O’Brien said. “I learn about peoples’ personalities and am able to coach them on how to interact within teams and organizations in order to enhance their careers.” O’Brien has used her unique combination of executive experience, leadership energy, and comprehensive hands-on human resources expertise to found the O’Brien Group. Her highly acclaimed Executive Presence Program is a result of over 25 years of organizational experience in cultivating skills that promote enhanced business performance and productivity. Over the years, she has worked closely with hundreds of professionals to nurture career growth and avoid career-limiting situations. Throughout her career O’Brien has worked with people at all levels within companies, government agencies, educational institutions, and renowned career consulting organizations. She is well regarded for her ability to quickly and thoroughly evaluate organizational objectives, needs and expectations, and then integrate new behaviors that best realize individual potential and organizational goals. O’Brien is extremely passionate about being involved in and bringing value to the community she now calls home. Last spring, she joined the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce and has found tremendous value in being part of it. “I enjoy networking in Warrenton and hope to bring value to the community,” she said. She is also interested in utilizing her skills as a volunteer for people who may not have the opportunity to access them otherwise. She believes she has found exactly what she was looking for in a community that will fully support her in furthering her career. “I was really looking for a very different lifestyle than I had in Northern Virginia,” O’Brien said. “I was ready for doing other things and coming to a smaller community — a place where I can walk around and meet people and I can continue my career.” One of the areas that O’Brien has been interested in for a long time is how generational differences affect workplace dynamics. “I’ve had so many experiences with different generations,” she said. “Even the way offices are laid out has changed drastically — the corner office with the view versus nowadays you have an open office layout.”

“I enjoy networking in Warrenton and hope to bring value to the community” O’Brien believes the sooner young people develop executive presence verbal and non-verbal skills the more confident they will feel and interact in a classroom setting or social events. O’Brien receives strong, positive feedback from parents who have seen significant changes in their children’s behavior after coaching from her. It appears beneficial to have skills reinforced by someone other than a parent, within a positive setting amongst peers. “We work on manners and etiquette, as well, “O’Brien said. “I enjoy working with all ages. I have worked with teens all the way up through C-level executives.” Over the years, O’Brien has shifted focus, but remains focused on people skills, assisting people through their career transitions, with a large focus on etiquette. “I bring a fun and humorous approach to teaching etiquette,” O’Brien said. “Everything from holding utensils and which fork is for what, to being in sync with the table and feeling like you’ve connected with and felt comfortable getting to know the other people. Other areas involve presentation skills, including how to stand in front of an audience and feel comfortable as well as being engaging. “I also work with voice and vocabulary,” O’Brien said. “Some people speak too fast, too slow, too loudly, or too softly. I can help them with finding a happy medium.” Overall, what O’Brien wants to bring to the table is simple. She hopes to enhance confidence and knowledge, accelerate clients’ ability to build business relationships, and to assist them in developing ongoing career skills so they can excel in their careers. “I love providing people with the tools they need to succeed,” she said. “I thoroughly enjoy what I’m doing.” ❖ For more information on O’Brien’s services, visit jean-obrien.com or call her at 540.878.5933

Dont’ forget about curb appeal! Here are some tips:
our Armed Forces this Memorial Day
• Create a focal point, such as a tree, garden bench, painted front door or statue. • Make sure your house isn’t hidden by overgrown shrubs. • Planters add appeal. Creating impressive arrangements is easy, just remember: Thriller (tall plants like grasses or angelonias), Filler (plants that add bulk. Think coleus, begonias or petunias), Spiller (Cascading plants like bacopas or vines). • Solar lighting along walkways is an inexpensive way to showcase your property.

Pick up the TORCH Chris and Ceci Galvin have led community young people into the world of theater since 2002 BY BETH LUNA

reat ideas are often born from unmet needs. As a teacher and parent at St. John’s Catholic Church in Warrenton, Chris Galvin saw a need for the community’s homeschoolers: the need for an activity to bring kids together for social activity and fun. A lover of theater who had participated in high school and college productions as well as community theater (where she actually met her husband), she decided to try her hand at starting a children’s theater group. The non-profit TORCH Drama Club was founded in 2002 with 25 children between the ages of 6 and 14 mounting their first production, a condensed version of The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. Now, TORCH is a vibrant and growing part of the Warrenton arts scene, and is no longer exclusively for homeschoolers — all members of the community are welcome. As the group gained popularity, Chris was called upon to divide the club into age levels to accommodate the expanding number of participants. Now the group consists of The Embers (elementary school), Sparks (middle school), Torch Bearers (high school) plus a new, fourth age group for post-college young adults, the ACTS/Magic. All work at different tasks and times during the season to put forth the workshops and productions that make TORCH so special. “As a parent, I always wanted my kids to have performance experience because I knew it had benefited me so much,” said

Chris. In fact, all four of her children participated in TORCH, with her daughter Ceci starting out as a SPARK, then growing through the ranks to follow in her mother’s footsteps not only as the current Director of TORCH but as a teacher at St. John’s as well. “TORCH has shaped my life, really,” Ceci said. “I fell in love with stories and storytelling because of my time in TORCH, and even went into playwriting in college at William & Mary and after graduating. TORCH has performed many of my original plays for large audiences, which is amazing to see. Having a story that has been living only in

Admission fees for events range from $5-$15. All ticket proceeds are funneled to local community causes and outreach, with past recipients including Fauquier Habitat for Humanity, The Pregnancy Crisis Center, Oklahoma tornado relief in 2013, medical funding for cancer patients, and St. John’s school for specific needs. The program is open to anyone in the community with an interest in theatre. “Not everyone who participates in the productions is parish or school affiliated,” Chris said. “We are a Christian-based group, but we are also a community-based group, and our goal is to serve and teach any young person who wants to join us.”
your heart actually come to life is life-changing, and TORCH has given me that and so much more.” Productions, as well as the popular monthly musical theater workshops open to all levels, take place at St. John’s. The high school-level Torch Bearers take on teaching, directing, and tech work during the year, helping to coach the younger kids. The school converts the gymnasium into a theater at the end of the school year specifically for the Torch Bearers’ big production. Each group encompasses 20-30 actors plus selected stage and tech crew. Movement from practice space to the theater stage takes a lot of strategic planning, especially when factoring in other organizations that use the school auditorium for various events. “We’re a large group, and space is a hot commodity for us since we ‘explode’ in any room we use with sets, tech equipment, costumes, and dancing actors.” said Chris. “We’re grateful for being housed at St. John’s, and they are very supportive of our shows each year.” Several former TORCH members who started as middle schoolers (the Sparks group) and moved up the ranks have gone on to perform professionally, including David D’Andrea who majored in Theater and has toured nationally with a Shakespearean theater company. Rachel Yeager pursued her TORCH theatrical dreams to New York and joined a traveling children’s theater troupe. Joe Duca is an actor and award-winning screen-play writer in Hollywood, who talks about his start at a little community theater and even wears a TORCH tee shirt on his website.

TORCH is planning on moving ahead with the 2020-2021 season pending recommendations from the governor. Please check their Facebook page for updates. An open house for the new season will be held Saturday, August 15, 7-10 p.m. at St. Johns School for ages 11-19, pending recommendations from the governor. Please contact Chris Galvin at cgalvin4030@gmail.com for more information and updates.
A group of TORCH graduates reunited for a small production of Godspell last Christmas. Ceci and her sister Clare, both founding students, were part of the show. “It was a rag-tag group of family, old friends, and students who got to share the experience of this show,” said Ceci. “It was a very cool way to start the new decade.” The group rehearsed for a short two weeks before mounting the full production. “We were amazed ourselves!” Ceci said. “Everyone was so good, it was actually very easy!” “Kids grow and age out of our main group, but they want to stick around,” Chris added. “And of course, we still want to include them. Christmas break is the perfect time for them to get together and present something – it is both a challenge and great fun.” Chris explained that the best way for the community to support TORCH is to be in the audience for the shows and help spread the word. And volunteers are always appreciated; TORCH has supporters who help with costuming, prop donations, and concession baking. “We could always use help with constructing, transporting, and assembling large setwork onto the stage since we require portability for the productions,” Chris said. “Our needs change with each age group, so accommodating set designs and lighting without compromising the school’s facility takes much communication and teamwork. The success of this troupe shows that we’re all working together. We invite you to pick up your TORCH and be a part of this!” ❖

sweet sweet summertime A combination of old fashioned fun and today’s technology will get you, and your kids, through the summer.

t’s pretty much a guarantee that this summer will be unlike any we’ve had in previous years. All of us moms and dads have already had months and months of trying to entertain our children, long before summer began. Since many of us are probably suffering “creativity fatigue,” we asked Julia Carney of Mountainside Montessori School in Marshall for her suggestions on fun stuff to do this summer. For starters, says Carney, it’s important to understand your child’s stages of development when planning activities. “Younger children live in the present and don’t realize what is missing. They play and learn through movement. Older kids need the feeling of being part of a community.” Try to maintain social interaction for middle schoolers as much as you can, says Carney, even if it’s by video chat. This is also a great time for them to

deepen connections with family and connecting with adults in their lives. It can be very hard to get older kids involved in activities, but enlisting them to help teach younger siblings things like how to jump rope or hopscotch can draw the teens in and they’ll even have a good time. She urges parents to sometimes take a step back and let kids figure out things themselves. “It gives them a sense of accomplishment,” she explains. “Kids are used to being busy with structure, and some kids will be bored because they aren’t used to it. But sometimes boredom is what fuels creativity,” says Carney. But for some things, it might be necessary to show them how to enjoy offline activities. For instance, they’ll probably be thrilled to spray their brother with the hose once they see you do it. Here are a few more thoughts for summer fun in case you are completely out of ideas.
give back: Consider volunteer work in a way that is safe. Volunteer at a food pantry or bring an elderly neighbor dinner. Express appreciation for grocery store employees, the mailman, etc. Older kids can give parents of younger children a break by video chatting with the little ones for a while; they will be delighted to have someone besides their parents to talk to. These kinds of activities will make kids feel more connected to their community. use technology: Make
use of technology to give new life to old fashioned, fun, offline experiences. Remember lemonade stands? Replace it with an Etsy shop selling crafts. Order crafts and supplies for friendship bracelets and origami, then learn to make them through Youtube videos. Remember putting on plays as a child? Older children can make their own videos of their
own parts and digitally compile them with their friends’ for a complete performance. Kids desperately need this kind of social, collaborative experience right now.
water games: Running
through the sprinkler in the yard and experimenting with all the settings. With parental supervision, fill a plastic pool with water and have boat races. Maybe they can even make the boats themselves by learning origami.
fishing and nature walks: With state and
local parks opening up, there are a host of opportunities for families to take day trips. Silver Lake in Gainesville is a great place to fish or let kids play in the little beach section where they can see tiny fish and search for turtles. There is a huge, very old turtle who mysteriously appears near the

pier when and if he feels like sticking his head out of the water. In Fauquier County, try the Riverside Preserve.
gardening: Growing things
in the garden is appropriate for all age groups. Herbs are great — younger children will be thrilled to see the seed sprout and grow, and older children can smell and taste them and decide how to use them in cooking.
rock painting: Rock
painting is a craft families have enjoyed for years. Now, some are taking it a step further by painting words of kindness on the rocks and leaving them around the neighborhood for others to discover.
cooking: Make homemade lemonade and popsicles with younger kids. Older ones can help plan and make dinner. This WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

makes them feel like a valuable member of the family and increases confidence, says Carney.
fort building: Indoor pillow forts are great for younger kids, and more complicated and creative outdoor ones are fun as they get older. Parents should resist helping, other than making sure no dangerous
materials are involved. Let them figure it out themselves with their imagination. Don’t go buy your kid a playhouse from Walmart…the building and creating of the fort is the fun part, and it’s beneficial to their development. A playhouse plunked in the yard will grow old very quickly.
bonding with pets:
The benefits of children owning pets — of any size — cannot be overstated. Pets awaken them to a whole new world of living beings that are so different from humans. Caring for something that is totally dependent on them teaches kids responsibility, empathy, and how to show affection. They have been shown to relieve stress and have a positive correlation with academic success. We’re not suggesting going out and getting a first time pet (unless you want one!), but if you have a

pet already, kids can spend more time with them by grooming, walking, reading to them, and playing ball. Older kids can dive into the world of animal training by learning how to teach the dog new tricks. And don’t forget your big pets — horses and other farm animals can always use the extra attention too. Big or small, your pet will relish the extra time with their humans! ❖

What to DIY, and what not to DIY? THAT IS THE QUESTION. You’re home. You have access to YouTube and its zillions of tutorials. But should you really install that ceiling fan or replace the bathroom faucet by yourself? There are many for whom the answer to those questions would be “heck yes!” But there are just as many others (like me) who can’t do something as simple as hang a curtain rod without assistance. So which projects should you leave to the pros and which could you probably do yourself? We posed that question — and several others — to six local home improvement pros. Here’s what they had to say.
Lifestyle Magazine (LM): What are some of the most common kinds of home improvement projects your company handles? TIM BURCH (TB): Our most common remodeling projects are whole house remodels. DAVID ELPHEE (DE): Our company
offers plumbing, heating, air conditioning and electrical services.
VALERIE GIBSON (VG): The most
common projects we complete include bathroom and kitchen remodels, deck and porch projects, trim carpentry projects, exterior maintenance such as

painting, caulking, and trim repairs, and handyman/home maintenance repairs.
KIM JENKINS (KJ): Bathrooms, roofing, siding, window replacements, decks and insurance restoration.
STEPHANIE KENNEDY (SK):
Large scale additions, kitchen and master bath remodels.
CHURCH MATTHEWS (CM):
We handle everything from a simple appliance replacement to a full kitchen design with cabinets and appliances.
DANIEL SOUTHARD (DS): Interior and exterior paint, rotten wood repair, kitchen and bath remodels.

What are some of the more specialized or unique services your company offers? TB: We have some of the best trim carpenters in the nation on our in-house staff. Detailed, one of a kind interiors are unique to us. DE: Our specialty in all three trades is service itself. The feedback we hear from our customers time and time again is how much they liked our people, their skill and knowledge as well as how friendly, courteous, clean, and professional they are. If a customer has a problem with any of our work, we will correct it, simple as that. We have been around for 44 years, we are easy to reach, and we are here to stay. When we say that we will stand behind our work, that really means something. VG: We offer a variety of services to help homeowners care for
and improve their homes. One of our main specialties is helping homeowners plan and prioritize their projects to help them balance between the “must-dos” and the “want-tos,” so they maximize the return on their home improvement dollars. Some of the more unique projects we have completed include a custom Italian marble tile floor, built-in mudroom lockers, a creek bridge, and an outdoor screened shed that served as a screened-in porch for a client’s weekend property.

DS: Custom build out, custom crown molding, custom tile.
What are some of the most common kinds of home improvement projects you see homeowners attempt to tackle themselves, only to end up calling you in to save the day? TB: Rescues: We have an entire division of the company dedicated to rescue projects
that homeowners or bad contractors have gotten into trouble trying to complete. My advice is to call the pros.
DE: We often get called in after a do-it-yourselfer has tried to install a new fixture, like a faucet, ceiling fan, or thermostat. Oftentimes homeowners don’t have the right tools, or their tools aren’t quite up to the job. Not only do we have the right tools, we have the expertise and know-how to do the job right. VG: Bathroom remodels are definitely the most common. They often appear to be
deceivingly easy and simple and many television shows add to that simplistic view. Once they are in the throes of the project, many homeowners find it’s more timeconsuming and labor-intensive than they thought. And it requires a lot of patience. Some stages also require more experience and skill sets than meets the eye. Another common project is interior painting. It can take more time and effort than you might think. We have had many homeowners tell us that they have painted themselves in the past and will never go through the headache again.
KJ: Bathrooms seem to be a big one! How can a little room be so challenging? Well, TV makes it look easier than it is. Once the demo is started, plywood may be rotted, the floor may not be level, mold may be discovered....the list goes on. The second would be decks. Decks must be built to code and be secured to the home properly with flashing to avoid water damage inside or built free standing with the proper structural components in place for safety. Many homeowners who purchase a home with a deck want to have it resurfaced. Oftentimes this can be done but sometimes the existing deck is in no shape to resurface and therefore a new one needs to be built in its place.
SK: Installing cabinetry or removing walls. There is so much skill and engineering knowledge that is needed to take on these projects efficiently and safely. If you plan to do something yourself make sure everything is planned and ordered prior to starting. CM: Most of our DIY customers are fairly savvy. Where we see a lot of challenges
though is when they try to cut corners, use the same hoses or the same wiring. The other area that is often overlooked is surge protection. Not all surge protectors are alike. Strip surge protectors must be divided by the number of outlets. Appliance surge protectors prevent the small surges that are usually unnoticeable and over time degrade the electronics in the appliances. We suggest one for microwaves, washers, dishwashers, washers, and freezers.
DS: Plumbing and electric, roof leaks.

What kind of projects should do-it-yourselfers never undertake on their own? TB: DIY-ers should never try to handle the
MEP's (mechanical, electrical and plumbing). Those jobs done incorrectly are dangerous.
DE: There are several things to consider here. Skill level, proper tools, and weighing the consequences of a job gone wrong. It is important to understand that there can be tragic outcomes when a job of any trade is not done right. Natural gas and propane can be explosive under the right conditions. Refrigerant gases can asphyxiate. Plumbing can become unsanitary, and a flood can devastate a home. Miswired circuits or appliances can start a fire or electrocute. HVAC, plumbing, and electrical work is best left to professionals. VG: Unless they happen to be very handy, I
would advise against bathroom and kitchen remodels. They really are quite complicated and require a great deal of skill and time. If your skills and experience are limited, they end up taking even more time or may not be possible to complete. Quality can also suffer as many of the skill sets involved in a kitchen or bath remodel take years of experience to develop.
KJ: Additions. They’re very extensive and
need architects, engineering, and can be dangerous if not tied into the existing home. Additionally, anything electrical could be dangerous and all of this has to be tied into your main panel so you need to know if the addition will support it. Roofing is another "get a pro" project. Most roofs are fairly high off of the ground plus there are so many components of the roof and if anything is done incorrectly or left out, it could result in serious water damage. The deck of the roof is also important. If plywood isn’t in good condition and the house is not ventilated properly, the heat can cause damage and in rare cases fire. SK: Trades like plumbing and electrical should be subbed out when possible.
CM: As I said before, there are a lot of capable individuals around here but if they are going to do a project and there is any doubt, they should have a professional do it. Appliances today are more sophisticated, more expensive, and more susceptible to installation errors. DS: Replacement windows and doors, electric and plumbing, roof repair, gutter cleaning.

KJ: Be patient with yourself and what you may find. You may discover things that are not up to code so have a contingency fund. Do your research. Be sure to know the products you are using. You can save on labor but be cautious about saving on material. Know the age of your home and make sure you test for lead paint and asbestos in plaster or popcorn ceilings. Construction is a craft, have fun with it. And finally, don't forget to admire your accomplishment!
Any words of advice for homeowners determined to “do-it-themselves”? TB: Determined to do it yourself? Pull a
building permit so at the very least the job can be inspected by a trained municipal inspector.
DE: If you must do it yourself, do your homework first. Make sure you fully understand the process and each step of what you are going to attempt. Also, check with your local building authority to see if you need a permit. Use the proper tools. Put safety first. VG: If you ever plan to sell your home, be very careful of the projects you take on yourself. If your intention is to increase the value of your home, you may end up doing the opposite. It’s a great rule of thumb to always view your home projects through the eye of a discerning buyer. They are often looking for a quality level that a non-professional would not be able to achieve. If the quality is lacking, buyers may be deterred from buying your home or view it as a project that needs to be redone and may offer less or request money towards repairs.

MASTER LEATHERSMITH If you have horses, you know Skeeter STORY BY PAM KAMPHUIS | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE
S
tepping into Skeeter’s shop was like stepping back in time for me. Thirty years ago, when I was riding full time, going to Skeeter’s was a regular occurrence. Not only is he the closest tack repair shop around, he is the best. This year marks his 50th year in business. Skeeter is a master leather smith. If it’s leather, he can make it or repair it, from saddles and bridles to chaps to gun or knife holsters. He’s had his shop in Fauquier County since 1978, and has amassed a solid and loyal customer base from near and far. As he says, he is “busy, busy, busy.” Skeeter has changed very little over the years, and his shop not at all. He still welcomes everyone with open friendliness and a good sense of humour. The exterior of the shop still has the iconic life-size model of a horse on top of an old horse trailer (pictured at left), as it has been for years, and the stern sign outside: “No dirty horse blankets.” — for Skeeter is the only one around
with a heavy duty sewing machine that can stitch through heavy horse blankets when they are ripped or torn, which happens often. The interior of the shop, as well, still smells of leather and still seems to be packed to the gills with saddles, bridles, and all kinds of horse equipment waiting for repair. The room is dominated by his large workbench and the organized wall of the tools of his trade, as well as the larger equipment: a heavy duty sewing machine and industrial leather cutters. One might think that the shop is too full to be organized, but Skeeter knows exactly where everything is, and can locate even the smallest item right away. Skeeter is the epitome of the selfmade man, learning his trade through experience from an early age and perfecting it over the years. It started not with tack, but with horses themselves. “I left home when I was 13 or 14, and I’ve been on my own ever since. I got into riding when I was 15. A local stable in Herndon needed some barn help, so I worked there cleaning stalls and doing farm chores. I found out that I liked horses, and they taught me a lot there about them. I got my riding experience there by riding and riding and riding some more, all sorts of horses, all sorts of experiences. Herndon was different back then, it was country, real country.” That’s where he got the nickname “Skeeter.” He explained, “I was working at a farm that had chickens, and I had to catch 10 chickens and put them in crates. So I’d catch one after the other, and put them in the crates, and then I told Mr.

CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT: Skeeter has been operating in his current shop since 1991, and is celebrating his 50th year as a leather smith. Holland, ‘I got them all done.’ And he said ‘Damn, boy, you faster than a mosquito.’ So I’ve been called Skeeter ever since.” “A guy by the name of Harrison saw me ride, and offered me a job on the spot. They had a stable out on Route 7 in Tysons Corner. I’d help them break horses. I broke all kinds of horses, basically any horse — English or Western, Thoroughbreds, racehorses, driving horses. You name it, I broke them." “The Harrisons, they had Quarter Horses, and I liked that, so I settled down with a business of breeding, raising, and training Quarter Horses. I have a training facility just two miles down the road here that I bought in 1973. Art, science, and sport come together at Hoffman’s Archery Shop BY AMANDA M. SOCCI

offman Archery shop in Warrenton is located in a small 103-year-old house on a stretch of highway across from a vast field in the New Baltimore community of eastern Fauquier County. Despite the small population of this community, it enjoys a steady flow of customers year round. The shop supplies assorted bows, crossbows, arrows, and related parts and accessories to “shooters,” or children and adults who pursue archery for recreation, competition, hunting, and bowfishing. Owner since 2005, Farron Moss and his small staff of three take turns providing one-on-one consultations, instruction, maintenance and repairs, and sales help to a bevy of predominantly male customers who participate in the sport of archery. Currently a Sunday school teacher who is married and has four children, Moss uses Christian principles as a compass, concentrating on living his life and running his store by serving others through kindness and humility. This philosophy overflows into the atmosphere Moss strives for in his shop. He emphasizes that he does not want people
around who curse like sailors. Instead, he treats people with respect and frequently invokes a G-rated sense of humor with everyone. Moss’s customers are well accustomed to his unique style and freely admit to travelling great distances to receive first-class customer service from a man and his team who strive to, above all, do good. Moss was born in West Virginia and has lived in Fauquier County for the last 26 years. When he was 12 years old, his grandmother gave him and his two younger brothers their first bows, a traditional, tall, wooden longbow with one simple string and no bells or whistles like the modern bows that are typically outfitted with advanced complexities of sights, sensors, and pulley systems. He fell in love with the sport and began competing as a shooter in recreational archery at the age of 16. He noted that he is self-taught and that “experience is the best teacher.” More recently, Moss has turned to a more practical and academic form of archery and is coaching others. The science behind archery is

mesmerizing, if not intimidating. The two types of traditional bows are the longbow and the recurve bow, with each delivering different amounts of energy when the shooter draws back and shoots. The composition of an arrow is as complex as the engine of a car, with each miniscule part identified separately. The body, for example, is called a shaft. The pointy part is the arrowhead. Arrows may have plastic thingies or feathers at the end, known professionally as fletching. The little plastic tips near the fletching are called nocks, which invites a whole lot of archery humor using clever puns with knock-knock jokes. Would you believe both the bows and arrows can be customized? Hoffman Archery offers colorful bow strings, colored nocks and feathers, assorted fletching, and even custom-painted bodies for bows to be used in competition. Moss and his staff take great pride in customer service, correctly fitting each bow to the shooter and emphasizing safety and form. They determine the shooter’s dominant eye (not hand), and help the

CLOCKWISE FROM FAR LEFT: Bobby McMillan, part of Hoffman’s shooting staff, makes adjustments to the pulley system on a compound bow; McMillan provides instruction and guidance to a customer to help him learn proper basic skills and posture; Hoffman’s owner Farron Moss and freelance writer Amanda Socci pictured with Farron’s prized competition bow, custom-outfitted in patriotic colors; Moss showcases a special practice board with paper targets in different sizes used to guide shooters.
shooter estimate how much weight they can shoot. Every shooter must position themselves like they are saluting the flag, and either hold the shooting arm straight or with a slight bend, depending on whether the shooter is female or male. Almost by instinct, the shooter automatically knows he or she must close one eye and focus the dominant eye on the target. Moss joked that he and his staff teach based on “God’s plumb bob,” — a gentle reference to Moss’s deep connection with Christianity — which is a comical reference to a human nose. A plumb bob is a tool used by builders to establish a proper vertical connection in building; similarly, God’s plumb bob, which is really a person’s nose, is the central guide that dictates arm positioning, bow placement, and the pulling back of the arrow to create proper form as the most successful way to make the best shot and hit the desired target. With years of experience in the sport, Moss is in a good position to advise others and give them the benefit of all he has learned. And he knows his stuff; he can explain the intricacies of archery as well as a surgeon can explain the latest techniques in surgery. He warns customers not to “dry-fire” a bow, which means to pull the string of a bow back without an arrow in place. “Never push back without an arrow — it’s a lesson in

physics,” stressed Moss. “The energy goes downward when you pull the weight on the bow. It’s all arm energy.” While dry-firing a bow can cause damage to the bow itself, it can also be dangerous to the shooter because the energy that is released is very powerful, potentially causing muscle or eye injuries. Moss requires shooters to shoot either at a designated space inside the shop or outside at their shooting range to practice a few rounds of shooting before selling them bows. With every sale, Moss provides detailed information about the bows and arrows, quivers (storage for the arrows), and bow cases, and also suggests a maintenance schedule. ❖
Spending time at Hoffman Archery interviewing people, taking photos, and asking detailed questions led to an entire encyclopedia of knowledge related to archery bubbling up. People were kind and open and freely wanted to discuss their varied experiences as female shooters, male shooters, beginners, and long time shooters. “I’m a perfectionist.” Several customers made the same comment. It takes practice and longevity to learn proper techniques and acquire the precision of a skilled shooter. “Archery provides stress relief and is good exercise.” In today’s overly technology-obsessed society, it is true that shooting paper targets indoors or outdoors provides mental release and flexibility in the arms. The Walter Reed National Military Medical Center incorporates archery as part of its therapy program for those who have post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Elegance on Ice Team USA ice dancers Molly Cesanek and Yehor Yehorov overcame a language barrier to become a formidable team

n ice dancing, the key is to find a partner that matches you in style, skill, and passion. Yehor Yehorov, a native of Ukraine, was searching for one. On the advice of his coach, he traveled to Virginia for a tryout with Warrenton resident Molly Cesanek in April, 2018. His coach’s instinct to pair the two was spot on, Molly Cesanek and and it turned out to be career-making, Yehor Yehorov life-changing advice. Not only did he find a partner he “clicked with” professionally in Molly, he is now applying for US citizenship. “Even though we didn’t know each other, or even of each other, trying out together was incredible as we just meshed together really well and our techniques matched beautifully as well,” said Molly. Even so, initially there was a disconnect at first. The key was solving it. The two struggled in their first few months to overcome a language barrier. Yehor spoke Ukrainian and Molly English. The miscommunication created tension at times as they worked on technique to increase their comfort “We were ecstatic about our win at Italy as that is the level with each other as partners in ice dancing. position we wanted to be in all season,” Molly said. that we must go experience these challenges because they prepare us for bigger opportunities we have in front of us and launch us even further with more motivation required to fulfill the dreams ahead.” As they continue to encounter success, Molly and Yehor’s main goal is to represent the United States at the Winter Olympics. Yehor must first become a U.S. citizen, something he’s working on. In the meantime, he is living with Molly’s family in Warrenton. “This is the perfect place for me,” Yehor said. Before the coronavirus shut athletic facilities down, the two trained in Rockville, MD twice a day, six days a week for four to five hours each day. Molly said one of the main questions she always gets is why she and her family don’t move closer to Rockville. Molly, 19, who grew up in Fauquier County and graduated from Wakefield School in The Plains, has no intention of leaving here. “I am a Warrenton girl,” said Molly, who in May finished her freshman year at American University. “This is my home.” Both became skaters at an early age. Yehor, who is 20, began skating at age 7 in his native country after noticing an ice rink next to his school while walking with his mother. Molly was five when she began skating. Since she loved to dance, her parents wanted to find a way to combine her energy level with her artistic bent. Ice dancing was the eventual answer. While individuals can perform in ice dancing, they cannot perform solo in the Olympics. Only partners can. It took some time for the typically shy Molly to embrace the idea of skating with someone else, but she overcame her fears. “As I got older, I realized this was not so daunting if you are doing it with a good friend,” Molly said. Although the two have skated with three previous partners each, this combination has superseded them all. “We have a system of communication that we knew would work,” Molly said. “We have such an interesting story. This happened for a reason. It’s not something we expected, but we knew we had to sort it out.” Besides working on their skating moves, the two received help in other ways. Molly, for example, is teaching Yehor English. She admits the sessions test her patience sometimes as she tries to get Yehor to understand her point, but the end result is always worth it. “I’m very thankful to Molly,” Yehor said. “She gives me homework. She will tell me this is a verb and this is a noun. She’s very supportive.” Molly, in turn, is thankful for her support system, starting with her parents and grandparents followed by so many others at Wakefield who have adjusted their schedules to help her realize her dream. Without them, it would have been a challenge for her to manage school and skating. Despite their bumpy beginning, Molly is also thankful she and Yehor stayed the course. “It’s not easy finding a partner, let alone a good partner,” Molly said. ❖

SUMMER IS
hare
WILD HARE CIDER PUB AND GARDEN
w
BY MIKE ALLEN
ith the proliferation of the wine industry in Virginia along with micro-breweries and farm-to-table restaurants, there has been a rebirth in what people see as traditional Virginia fare. Since the self-sufficient times of our earliest colonists, Virginia farmers have produced their own wine, beer, and cider. Hard cider has long been a staple in rural Virginia and an obvious by-product of the many orchards prevalent throughout the Shenandoah Valley and other regions. Cider is gluten free and has a similar abv to a regular beer but with the calories of a light beer. It is also refreshing and a good compromise for couples when one wants the winery experience while the other wants to go to a brewery. Ciders offer a great alternative to the heavy, hopped up brews and provides the refreshment that wine can’t on those warm summer days. The key to successful entrepreneurship is finding a need or want, and then fulfilling that efficiently while serving the customer and making a profit. Jim Madaj and sons Justin and Patrick decided there was a niche to fill. When Jim decided to go into this venture, he knew he wanted to “craft something with his hands; a product of science and art.” Wild Hare cidery uses traditional methods from colonial times as well as European styles, while always
trying to stay fresh and experimental with new products, styles, and flavors. He also knew there were other advantages to cider production. Ciders are governed by the Board of Agriculture and considered a farm wine, which means you can have up to five retail locations and — unlike breweries — you don’t have to produce the product on site. This obviously helps with overhead since they can produce in one location, Berryville, and distribute in several.

The first retail site was established in Old Town Leesburg at the Log Cider House. The Warrenton Pub and Garden and the Middleburg Cider Pub soon followed, each having their own unique character and ambience. The Warrenton Cider Pub and Garden is coming up on its first anniversary and has already become a local favorite as a cozy place to be when the weather pushes you indoors, and a delightful place to be when you can relax outside in the garden. The Warrenton location proprietor is Patrick Madaj, and he keeps the atmosphere light

and friendly. The ciders are available by the glass, flights of three, canned, and in growlers that can be refilled. Food at all three locations is generally provided by local, popular outside vendors and can be quickly prepped in a small kitchen upstairs. Patrick is a BBQ aficionado in his own right and can see someday expanding the business to include his own BBQ creations. The ciders themselves include three traditional dry ciders similar to a champagne, then three others that would be considered off-dry to semisweet. Flavored by hops, spices, or fresh fruit, they vary by season. Long gone are the cloying sweet ciders people may imagine. While there I sampled — and immensely enjoyed — Hatch, which is a traditional dry cider, Willow, another fairly dry cider with hints of berries and lime, and then an off-dry cider, Chute, with flavors of cherries and vanilla. Wild Hare ciders take 3-5 months of care and attention to go from the pressing to the final product at their Berryville location. The general rule is to keep three ciders on hand that are consistent and crowd favorites, but to also keep the customer returning to try new creations, small batch productions, and seasonal flavors. Their canned product has been sold in Whole Foods. The location itself is in a prime spot to enhance Warrenton’s Main Street. The building is a renovated 1920 home that has been used as an office in recent years. It is cozy with the typical nooks and crannies you would expect, but with recent and modern updates. The cider garden out back is a perfectly photogenic spot for any kind of gathering without the fuss. There is a TV upstairs and down for whenever the big game returns, but in the meantime is the perfect place to relax, get comfortable and refresh yourself with a traditional Virginia cider. Asked about how he draws customers to the location, Patrick says that primarily it is through traditional social media channels like Facebook, Main Street exposure, word of mouth, and followers of the music acts he brings to the Pub. Just like the ciders, Wild Hare likes to alternate the style and motif of its entertainment. “In other words, there is always something for everyone here.” ❖
I’ve neglected my mouth for years and I am scared to death of the dentist. How can you help me? We develop a rapport with our patients. Once you get to know us, your anxiety will diminish. We have medication, nitrous oxide, and administer painless injections. We are very sensitive to your feelings. We want you to be comfortable. Isn’t it Iconic… BY MARK LUNA
T
he 12th century French philosopher Bernard of Chartres is largely credited for the saying, dwarfs standing on the shoulders of giants; an allusion to the belief that when one (modern) is carried aloft and elevated by the magnitude of those who’ve come before us (ancients), they are able to see more and reach farther. It was with this spirit that college friends (and whiskey buddies) Birk O’Halloran and Karl Antle created their label, Iconic Wines. To this day, a near decade into their adventure, their core mission remains intact: make wine we want to drink. Balance, focus and complexity, as any winemaker will tell you, is an achievement in and of itself, and Iconic Wines delivers. California born and Colorado raised, winemaker O’Halloran attended Cornell University’s Hotel Program, where wine went from a subject of study to his career choice. He continued his studies at the International Wine Guild and landed his first wine gig, actually breaking ground to help build three wines shops for various owners. That sweat equity would lead him to a small import company called Acid Inc., where he spent eight years transforming the outfit into a national operation. Throughout his travels, he built an astonishing network of wine industry mentors and wine grape growers…this would lay the foundation for Iconic. As for his winemaking philosophy, O’Halloran sees it more as a patchwork of philosophies borrowed from all the winemakers he has had the pleasure of working with over the years, including both Californian and European mentors. His goal always is to produce a delicious finished wine over any single, strict winemaking philosophy. To that point, they chose the name Iconic for their winery to aspire and establish a new benchmark for California wine. And as their palate would have it, Iconic Wines was founded on a love of Chardonnay. And they produce some great ones… Their first vintage was 90 cases of Chardonnay in neutral oak barrels, and was named Heroine to capture its grace and elegance, while still reflecting the powerful terroir of California. They put a true American art form – comic book art – on the label (more on this later); and when it sold out in six weeks, they knew they

had something beyond a pet project on their hands…it was time to go all in and get real. The Hero Series (chardonnay, zinfandel, pinot gris) was envisioned with one idea in mind, to make great wine. The Sidekick Series (chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, merlot) represents the finest wine they could create at everyday drinking value. About the wines… Since its debut in 2010, Heroine Chardonnay has been their defining wine. Like its predecessor, Heroine Chardonnay 2017 is sourced entirely from two blocks of the prestigious Escolle vineyard in the northern stretch of sunny Santa Lucia Highlands, which was planted in 2008. The vineyard retains a remarkable amount of acid

yet balanced by the concentration of the Santa Lucia sun. Both fermented and aged in neutral French oak, Heroine Chardonnay 2017 shows the remarkable range of the varietal; in one moment clean and crisp, the next moment round and full. Green and golden fruits anchor this wine, in both aromatics and palate. Approximately 400 cases were made. And priced under $30, it performs like a wine situated much higher up the ladder. As stated earlier, the Sidekick Series represents Iconic’s everyday drinking value wines. With fruit carefully selected from various vineyard sources throughout northern California, these wines, both chardonnay and cabernet sauvignon, are indeed trustworthy in their pursuit of everyday reliability, offering freshness and fruit-driven satisfaction. Sidekick Chardonnay 2018 serves as the go-to white wine. Like Heroine, bright fruit and minerality are the combined focus. Stainless steel vinified, it’s fresh and lively, with a racy acidity and dazzle-the-senses finish. There’s an eagerness to this wine that sets the stage for the big sister. It’s priced around $18 and holds its own. Not to be outdone is the Sidekick Cabernet Sauvignon 2017. This particular wine is sourced from various sites in the Lodi California AVA, a wine region of great acclaim for its reds, particularly zinfandel and cabernet, as well as Anderson Valley fruit further north. Sidekick Cabernet 2017 is also fermented in several stainless steel vertical fermenters. After a maceration and pump-over phase to dryness, about a third of the wine is then aged in new French oak for a minimum of six months. Final blending is done a few weeks before bottling. The result? A rich bodied, red fruit focused wine that screams California greatness. There’s no jam or green vegetable characteristics getting in the way…just solid cabernet sauvignon purity that is sure to please, especially those seeking one under $20. With spring here, Iconic has its own rosé wine ready for the season. Secret Identity 2019 is a beautiful blend of seven red wine grapes. Of course, if I told you what they were, it wouldn’t be a secret. But Iconic will tell you that the name Secret Identity comes from the desire to make the best dry rosé for the buck they can, while not being trapped by tradition. For the record though, the wine is produced with fruit sourced from the Sierra Foothills, Clarksburg and Mendocino. The average vine age is over 20 years old, with a portion of the vines nearly 85 years in age. The beautiful color, enveloping aromatics and refreshing palate make this rosé a great choice for the sunny months ahead. And finally, as mentioned before, there’s Iconic Wines cool and oh-so-fitting labels. To capture (in label) the imagination, inspiration and excitement they have for their wines, Iconic turned to American comic book artist Cliff Chiang, whose artwork has been hailed for its fluidity, nuance and style; and with a resume of clients that include DC Comics, Dark Horse Comics, GQ Magazine, Lucasfilm, Warner Animation, and the ACLU, his work speaks for itself. So go for it…climb on a shoulder of inspiration and have an Iconic wine… Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖
