love it when I get interaction from the readers of Warrenton Lifestyle. It makes me feel like part of the community and that people are liking the magazine. Years ago, when we lived in Orlean, we were woken up in the middle of the night by our dogs going crazy. My husband sleepily got up to let them out and then came sprinting back to the bedroom. “It’s a ***** black bear!” The fact that there was a bear around was not surprising. The main problem was that the bear was on our porch outside our first floor bedroom window. From our bed he was probably six feet away from us and very visible through the window. With the porch light on, that was the closest view of a bear I’ve ever had. He was a big one, too, about 500 pounds and topping the porch railing by about 6 inches, on all fours. Turns out, he was not terribly interested in the dogs at all, in favor of the 50 pounds of black sunflower seed in a plastic tub under the bedroom window. He polished that off, and then wrenched all the birdfeeders off their wrought iron hooks and emptied those too before lumbering off. But at that point we were on his regular route, and he periodically came by to check for more birdseed. We called the game warden, who was familiar with our bear, and learned several things. Bears live in an approximately five mile area and frequent locations within that area where there is food. They especially love birdseed. And it’s illegal to shoot a bear unless he enters your house. I began seeing more and more photos of bears on Facebook, which gave me the idea for an article. I put out a post on a community Facebook page asking community members to post photos they had, and I received 142 responses, some with photos, some with stories. It turns out that the number of bear calls into the Va Department of Wildlife has almost quadrupled since 2015. I am an animal lover, and while we had the sense to avoid the bear, I couldn’t help but appreciate his magnificence. Even though bear attacks are extremely rare, they need to be discouraged from frequenting locations where people are for their own safety as well. So don’t feed birds between April and October, and keep your trash inside until trash day. Also in this issue, we reveal the winners of our Cutest Kid Contest, and boy, are they cute! And our other main feature is Twilight Polo at Great Meadow-how to watch it, enjoy it, and tailgate at it. It’s a reasonable night out for the whole family. So, enjoy this issue, and happy summer!

WHAT DO YOU THINK? It’s an odd thing, sometimes what we think or feel about something is the exact opposite of how it really is. This is especially true of God -- most times we think we are separated from Him or that He doesn’t love us or maybe He doesn’t know we even exist. At one time we were separated from God but Jesus has changed all that! And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. – Romans 8:38 Visit your local church to hear about Jesus, the One who has bridged the gap for us.

rab your wizard hats and capes and head to Old Town for the 1st Annual Warrenton Wizard Walk where the streets and shops and restaurants will come alive with magic, wizardish fun, games, and shenanigans! Look for themed window displays, business owners and guests in costumes, activities in merchants’ shops, Hedwig’s Owlry Hour at 3 p.m., a magic show with Professor Snape at 4 p.m., and more! The streets will be closed from 1-9 p.m. to enjoy the afternoon, and the day will culminate in a Wizard Walk parade of costumes open to everyone from 5th street to the courthouse at 5:30. While costumes are encouraged, they are in no way necessary to enjoy this day of fun in Old Town Warrenton. The craze and popularity of Harry Potter has gone a long way in increasing the interest in wizards, but you don’t have to be a Harry fan to enjoy the day! One of the organizers, Cammie Fuller of The Open Book, is quick to point out that there are many other witches and wizards in literature: Merlin, Septimus Heap, Gandalf, and don’t forget the ladies! Galadriel, Jadis, Glinda, and Hermione. “Personally, I’m more of a Lord of the Rings fan and Lothlorien is my dreamscape. It’s really-what’s your magical taste?” she explains. What is the day going to entail? First things first: you’ll want to begin by stopping at any participating merchant to receive your Wizarding Passport, engage in four activities, and be sorted into one of four houses: Fitchersled, Nevillmore, Duggandopple, or Linewizard, in order to find out what your color and mascot will be. Do these names sound familiar? They should — they’re named after current and past mayors of Warrenton! There will be a magic show, an owl show, plus herbology classes, magical (temporary!) tattoos, potions

“Our mission is to provide a magical day for residents and visitors alike.” workshops, candy, crystals, wand making, music, tabletop quidditch, and some themed food and drinks (alcoholic and kid-friendly) at our Old Town restaurants. While the planning and production of the event is a community effort with Experience Old Town Warrenton and business owners enthusiastically jumping on board and forming committees, the root of the idea really has to be credited to Meleana Moore of Framecraft, Lee Owsley of Latitudes, and Cammie. Lee’s daughter operates a Latitudes store in Staunton where there is a huge Harry Potter festival each year drawing thousands of adults and children, mostly in costume. So they thought, why

}

not try it here? Talking to them, it’s almost hard to believe that people will have more fun on the day than they have had planning it. These three have been enthusiastically imagining and working for months. The event really has a dual purpose, they say. Meleana says, “Our mission is to provide a magical day for residents and visitors alike. The community and neighborhood is paramount. It’s all about community building —— we feel like one of the purposes of all the Main Street activities is to have neighbors bump into each other and create personal interactions and bring people together.” And the other mission is to support the businesses of Old Town. There will be no outside vendors, they point out specifically, all the participants will be Old Town businesses. The goal is to invite customers into the shops and restaurants that are here. The hope is that people continue after the actual wizard walk to hang out and shop and eat. “As a free event for the community we also hope it is a boost to merchants who have struggled over the past year.” Cammie recalls, “The day we had the initial smaller wizard walk in 2019 was my best sales day of the year. We want to stimulate that for all the businesses in Old Town. We’re hoping it will grow and become an annual event for the town.” Interested in being a sponsor? Message us through our Facebook page. Hometown Girl Long and Foster Real Estate Agent April Shaver's love for this county serves her clients well

L

ong and Foster Realtor and Warrenton native April Shaver has always been a hometown girl. After growing up here and attending PB Smith Elementary School, Warrenton Middle School, and Fauquier High School, she never had any desire, as some small town kids do, to leave as a young adult. Right out of school she went to work at Long and Foster Real Estate in Haymarket as a receptionist. Obtaining her real estate license in 2004, she worked as a licensed assistant to two Top Producing Teams to learn their keys to success, and she has been selling real estate on her own for the last five years after moving to the Warrenton office in 2007. She never considered another real estate company in all those years. “Everyone was just so great there, right from the beginning. Other realtors mentored me. I’ve always been the youngest, and everyone has always taken me under their wing to help me grow. It always felt like home. The company offers great resources, and there never was a reason to leave.” Add to that a desire to stay and raise her family in her hometown. She says, “I like the hometown feel, the community, and the way people interact and treat one another. Warrenton has some beautiful architecture, too, and Old Town is quaint and charming. It’s a mix, a little bit of city and a lot of country. There are so many things right in our backyard — it’s easy to get to both the city and the mountains.” With that kind of love for Fauquier, it’s not surprising that most of her business is from this county. Looking back, April says, “I’ve always had an interest in houses and architecture from very early on, and my dad was really influential in developing that. When I was growing up, on Sundays after church he

would drive us through Old Town and his favorite neighborhoods to look at houses, so I got to know the area and the types of real estate we had here really well. He especially loved the detailed brickwork and landscaping of Creighton’s homes in North Waterloo. We went on many farm tours through the years as well. He instilled in me a pride for home ownership, attention to detail and hard work that has shaped my life.” An avid equestrian, April has been riding since the age of six when her father introduced her to horses on a farm adjoining their home. Now the owner of two warmblood horses that she boards at a nearby farm in Hume, she competes mostly locally in Hunter/Jumper shows. It’s not all training and competition, though; she does a lot of trail riding to relax and enjoy her horses. “When I was growing up. I knew I wanted to be either a horse trainer or a real estate agent. Now I get to mesh the two,” she says. Now living in Lake Whippoorwill with her husband, active six-year-old son, three dogs, and a cat, April is always striving for harmony in life. “I try to find balance between my family and son, my clients, and my horses,” she says. “For me, there is a connection

between horses and houses. I think it's appreciation, a sense of pride, and an overall strive for excellence in both my business and my riding. Whether it's transforming a house into a home, a horse into a partner, or helping a friend find their perfect home, it's all very invigorating for me.” What’s coming up for April? “My plan is to continue raising my son, growing my business, and maybe someday live on my own horse farm here in Fauquier. That’s my long term dream,” she says. www.longandfoster.com/AprilShaver

Magic Carpets in The Plains David’s Oriental Rugs BY BETH LUNA

ore often than not, our passions grow from what we are exposed to as children. You may love hockey, or ballet, or nursing because one of your parents did, and they shared their interest and talent with you as you grew. This was certainly the case for David Aliff, founder of David’s Oriental Rugs, who grew up surrounded by handmade rugs and textiles collected and treasured by his parents Evon and David Sr. As a young man, David struck up a close friendship with a Persian classmate named Parviz at Fairfax High School who shared his family’s keen interest in rugs. After graduation, Parviz opened an antique rug and carpet shop while David pursued civil engineering. As years passed and families grew, the two friends decided to work together at Parviz’s shop. David’s son Dustin, who was eager to learn the historical aspects and art of handmade carpets, was at his side, and the trio worked together for several years. The Aliffs lived in Fauquier county, and on a drive one day an empty building in Marshall caught their eye. “I graduated from Liberty High School in 1998, and my father and I founded Carefull Carpets in that building in Marshall the following year,” Dustin said. As fate would have it, a Turkish master weaver visited the store one day. “We talked for hours about handmade rugs and carpets,” said Dustin. “And then, he offered me

the opportunity of a lifetime.” The man, named Ismet, invited Dustin to train with other master weavers in Istanbul outside of the grand bizarre after being impressed by Dustin’s thirst for knowledge. “I wanted to enhance my skills,” Dustin said, “and after spending three months every year for three years in Istanbul, working with several of the oldest carpets in the world, I became a Master Weaver.” Dustin now continues to pass his skill to others, having trained seven students; currently he is training his eighth apprentice, Niko from Winchester. He explains his enthusiasm for teaching by pointing out, “This beautiful art form has taken others to new and wondrous heights and hopefully showed them another creative side of themselves. I hope it inspires them also to pass these skills for handmade natural woven items on to others who are willing to take the time to learn.” Now, David’s Oriental Rugs opens its doors at the store’s new home in The Plains,

to take this opportunity to thank all of those who called and kept our one-of-a-kind store up and running during such a difficult time. The Fauquier county community really came together to help not just our shop but other small businesses during the pandemic, and we appreciate that.” Moving to the new location allows David and Dustin to expand their reach to new customers without moving too far from their current base. “I look forward to meeting interesting people every day,” Dustin said. “Besides my love for rugs and carpets, interacting with those new and intriguing people, especially those who are getting into the art of the rug for the first time, is a high for me. I could say that is the main reason I’m still in this business and not trying other endeavors. I have met some very nice young couples that are starting their lives together and decided to take a drive to the country and come into the store.” Outside of work David, Dustin and their dog enjoy outdoor activities like hiking, gardening, and planting an exotic and beautiful array of trees and shrubs at their home in Sumerduck. “We love the Shenandoah and Appalachian trails through Virginia and West Virginia,” said Dustin. And, the art of the carpet is not their only talent — they both love music and play multiple instruments, with Dustin writing poetry and his own music. “I love my dog Sirius Ray Charles Aliff more than life itself, especially during the pandemic! He made me and many others smile during such a harsh time!” The Aliffs feel very fortunate to have such a passionate and educated clientele, many of whom they now call friends. “We are lucky to have this life with our friends and family,’ Dustin shared. “ We couldn’t have done this for 21 years without each and every one of them. This shop belongs to all of us, and we respect it as we respect each other. As David says, ‘We would like to be your kind, so please be kind.’ We love to meet and talk with new and interesting people every day except Sunday. Just kidding — Sunday too sometimes!”

Finding Your Inner Creative and Giving Back Local author Norman Reid hopes to use his experience as a writer and a political scientist to help provide the public with information on mental health resources BY HANNAH SAMLALL

W

hy do we tend to stop finding outlets for our creativity as we get older? In the culture of instant gratification that we live in, it’s so easy for us to consume art in every form. Why not also look for an outlet to create? Norman Reid of Delaplane is an amateur photographer turned longtime civil servant turned lifelong maker of things, who could teach us all a thing or two about cultivating our creative side. Reid, born and raised in Ohio, holds a Ph.D. in political science from the University of Illinois-Urbana. After working with the Illinois state legislature for several years, he had a three-decade career with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, where he specialized in rural economic and community development, both as a researcher and a public policy executive. During his time with the USDA, Reid wrote dozens of books, technical articles, and monographs on subjects such as economics, anti-poverty programs, computer science, and more. “I’ve always enjoyed writing,” Norman said. “At the Department of Agriculture, I had to write so much and so clearly that I practiced it a lot. I probably ended up publishing around 150 things.” In 2000, Reid had the opportunity to go on an African safari trip with a family member and didn’t let the opportunity pass him by. “We were there for 3 weeks in Kenya and Botswana mostly,” Reid said. “It was a fantastic experience seeing the animals from a vehicle right there with you. It was a time in my life that I remember vividly even

Jack Lynch II spent 24 years as a Marine infantryman before retiring from the Corps to work as a government contractor. In 2013 Jack was licensed to assist his wife with handling foreclosures as they often presented a variety of unusual circumstances. Over the years, Jack has provided security, hosted open houses and gotten very comfortable working with buyers often showing properties for the team. Jack’s goal is to serve our clients as well as he served our country. Many of our clients enjoy chatting with Jack as he has traveled extensively both as a Marine and as a government contractor. His favorite travel destinations include, Heidelburg and Stuttgart Germany, Barcelona, Spain and Prague, Czech Republic. As a Marine, Jack lived in homes in Hawaii, North Carolina, Maryland, Virginia and Delaware so he understands the stress associated with moving to a new location. As a native Virginian he is well acquainted with the area’s history and its numerous attractions. He is an invaluable asset to the team.

today, 20 years later.” Upon returning from his trip, Reid was inspired to write a book sharing his experiences in Africa. He set to work writing and ended up writing several essays, poems about the animals, the experiences, and people he met on his trip. “I had maybe 20 different essays and poems that I put together but I never quite got it out. Recently, I dragged out a poem I wrote about elephants and showed it to my wife and she said it would make a great children’s book,” Reid said. “So I went back to my photographs I took while on that safari and picked out ones that matched the stanzas of the poem.” In March of 2021, he released Being Elephant: How It Feels to be a Jumbo. The poem weaves an intriguing tale of what it’s like to live the free life of a jumbo in the remaining unspoiled land of their birth. In addition, Reid also wrote The Hero of Gucci Gulch: A Capitol Hill Mystery based on his experience as a political scientist and someone who worked on Capitol Hill. He is now in the process of writing the sequel to that book. After leaving the USDA, Reid moved from Falls Church to a farm near Delaplane in Fauquier County where he now resides with his wife and two cats. It was at this house that Reid picked up an additional creative hobby — woodworking. “The house has a large basement that wasn’t being used for anything that I turned into a wood shop,” Reid said. “I added tools overtime. I made a four poster bed, a little cabinet called a sugar chest, and more. Then, my best friend and I decided to start a business called Shenandoah Toolworks.” Shenandoah Toolworks makes high-quality woodworking tools at an affordable price. “We purchase the metal portions from local foundries and local producers, and we turn the handles ourselves,” Reid said. Reid’s advice for channeling your creative side? Journaling. “I journal every day. It’s a time I look forward to, “ Reid said. “I need to express myself in words. It’s probably the most important thing I do during any given day, even if the words don’t go anywhere.” In addition to all of his creative outlets, Reid serves on the Rappahannock Rapidan Community Services Board. “I have always been interested in public service, I specifically chose to work for the government because I wanted to be of service to the nation,” Reid said. “RRCSB is a broad-based community organization that is working on some very difficult public policy issues related to mental health, in particular, and substance abuse issues as well. This is something I have a deeply personal interest in and I am gratified to have the opportunity to give back to the community. I am hoping to use my experience as a writer and a political scientist to help get good public information out about the services that RRCSB provides.” For more information about Reid’s books, photographs, and other products, visit positivepix.net. A visitor enjoys Rockwell’s illustrations on the covers of the Saturday Evening Post. All 323 of his covers are on display at MSV. Rockwell’s “Rosie the Riveter” on the cover of the Saturday Evening Post.

Rockwell’s America Explore the iconic artist’s work at a special exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley in Winchester BY JILL DEVINE

“L

ife as I would like it to be,” is how Norman Rockwell, one of the most prolific and beloved American illustrators of the 20th century, once described his signature images of an idyllic America. Best known for his cover illustrations for Boys Life, the Saturday Evening Post, Look, and other magazines, Rockwell chronicled six decades of American history, gently walking his followers through the Great Depression, two world wars, civil rights milestones, and the wars in Korea and Vietnam. Thanks to a traveling exhibition at the Museum of the Shenandoah Valley (MSV) in Winchester, Rockwell fans have the rare opportunity to view up close many of his original paintings and drawings, along with authentic vintage covers from all 323 of his Saturday Evening Post magazine commissions and a special print and digital display of

his iconic Four Freedoms posters. Norman Rockwell’s America, an exhibition on loan from the National Museum of American Illustration in Newport, Rhode Island, and the American Illustrators Gallery in New York, New York, will remain at MSV through August 8, 2021. Rockwell’s instantly recognizable style is highly lifelike and hyper-detailed, and his illustrations have long tugged at our heartstrings, evoking nostalgia for simpler times. His heart-warming scenes portray ordinary people of all ages and walks of life, doing everyday things, like threading a needle, reading the newspaper, shooting marbles, visiting the doctor or peeling potatoes. “Rockwell’s appeal is that he comments on the human condition in a way that we can all relate to,” said Nancy Huth, MSV deputy director of arts and education. “He focused

on light-hearted emotion, friendships and family relationships, and his subjects covered the whole range, from posh international travelers and antique buyers to blue-collar workers or children,” she said. Rockwell’s first cover illustration was for Boys Life, the official publication of Boy Scouts of America, and his freelance relationship with that publication and the BSA covered more than 60 years. On display at MSV is On My Honor, Rockwell’s oversized charcoal-on-paper study for the February 1953 Boys Life cover. Winchester resident and assistant scoutmaster Gerald Crowell said he came to the exhibition specifically to see this piece, which features a Cub Scout, Boy Scout,

and Eagle Scout saluting in front of the Boy Scout Creed. “I like how realistically Rockwell painted the Scout uniforms, right down to the troop numbers and uniform patches,” he said. Also on display are print posters of Rockwell’s Four Freedoms – Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Worship, Freedom from Want and Freedom from Fear. Rockwell created the Four Freedoms, based on a 1941 speech by President Franklin D. Roosevelt, to raise money for the war effort in 1943. Acknowledging that the America Rockwell portrayed in his earlier works was mostly ethnically homogeneous, MSV installed a digital display next to the Four Freedoms. That display, titled For Freedoms, presents an electronic series of photographs of a more inclusive modern America and is on loan from an artist-led organization of the same name that seeks to expand what participation in a democracy looks like and reshape conversations about politics. Also on display are some of Rockwell’s later works reflecting milestones or changes in racial thinking, including 1963 Portrait of Nehru and the 1966 Peace Corps in Ethiopia (Schoolroom).

Rockwell’s “The DoughBoy and His Admirers.” DoughBoy was the nickname for the American infantryman during World War I.

ften, on local social media, people post photos of bears they have seen in their yard. There are quite a few out there in Fauquier County, and not just in the rural areas. I live very close to town and we have had bear visits. Curious, I posted a Facebook request asking people to send in photos of the bears they have seen. There were over 140 responses, some stories, some photos, mostly from the northern end of the county. Almost everyone had a problem with trash and bird feeders, but there SUBMITTED BY: were other stories too. DIDI McCONNELL, However, while magnificent, for human DRAGON RIDGE PHOTOGRAPHY THE PLAINS safety reasons, as well as the bear’s health and well being, we should be discouraging them from visiting us, both in rural areas and in town. BEARS IN RESIDENTIAL COMMUNITIES WILL EVENTUALLY HAVE TO BE KILLED. THEY LEARN WHERE THE EASY FOOD IS AND CAN’T RESIST. DO WHAT YOU CAN TO NOT LURE THEM IN!”

Over the past few years, Fauquier County residents have seen an increased presence of black bears in the country but also in town neighborhoods. Why is that? Through history, the exploitation of bears and their natural habitat has caused their population to decline. However, today, some forested habitats have been restored or are protected, and hunting has been regulated. This means a healthy expanding population of bears that have nearly re-established their historic statewide range. Bears are naturally curious and will explore their environment in search of food, leading them to more populated areas. Helpline calls to the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources regarding bears in Fauquier County have increased from 35 in 2015 to 129 in 2020, although that is still quite a lot lower than the state average.

They are magnificent animals, and beautiful to watch. Is it all right to encourage them to frequent your property?

—JASON WICKLUND

Virginia is bear country so there is no need to encourage bears to visit your property since one may find its way passing through naturally. This is normal and ok but we certainly don’t want a bear to linger near our homes. If we don’t remove things that attract them, the bears can lose their natural fear of humans and become a public safety threat, possibly resulting in euthanizia. Additionally, human garbage is not a natural part of the bears diet, and can be harmful to their health. Therefore, attracting/feeding bears is illegal in Virginia.

What attracts bears to homes/farms? The most common reason a bear visits is access to bird feeders and garbage. However, really anything with a food or food-like odor can attract a bear, and with a sense of smell seven times more powerful than a bloodhound, even uncleaned grills, pet food bowls, and animal feed can attract bears from a distance.

Is it all right to go outside to take a photo of a bear? While bears are naturally wary of humans, moving close to a bear is not a good idea. Use a telephoto lens. There is no harm in taking an iPhone picture from the safety of your home, but allowing a bear to linger comfortably in your yard while you upload a 45 minute live stream video to social media is only ensuring more visits in the future.

Are black bears dangerous? Bears are naturally wary of human presence and don’t see humans or most pets as a prey item. Bears rarely injure humans and unprovoked attacks are exceptionally rare.

Bears don’t see dogs or cats as a prey item. However, dogs can make bears react — particularly a mother protecting her young — and injuries can happen. We recommend keeping pets on leash when going on walks and making sure the yard is clear before letting dogs out, especially in the early morning, dusk, or at night. Black bears don’t target larger livestock animals such as cattle or horses. The reason for this simply comes down to size: even a large bear doesn’t want to get kicked. Black bears will, however, go after smaller livestock, and the most typical victims are chickens.

run faster than humans anyway), don’t play dead, and don’t turn your back. Stand your ground, and wave your hands in the air to look bigger than you really are. Try to be scary by making loud noises, or throw objects at the bear. If a bear charges you, do not run. Often charges are “bluffs” or a bear’s defensive reaction. Do not bother climbing a tree, bears are faster at it anyway. If, in an extremely rare and unlikely event, a bear makes contact with you, fight back using anything at hand as a weapon such as sticks, or rocks, etc. The most effective defense against bears is bear spray. Bear spray puts out a 30-foot cloud of irritant at about 70mph between you and the bear, creating a barrier resulting in no permanent damage to the bear and giving you time to get away.

What should you do if you're outside and you see one?

What steps should people take to discourage bears from coming?

While the possibility of injury is remote, remember, never approach a bear. If the bear doesn’t see you or ignores you, back away slowly until you reach a safe location. If you aren’t able to get to safety before the bear notices you, remain calm, don’t run (triggering a chase response, and bears can

Bears should not be comfortable where humans are present. Securing or removing anything that would attract them is the most important thing. Do not put out bird feeders between April 1 and November 1, clean your grill, clean up pet/livestock food, keep garbage in a garage or shed until the morning

of garbage day. When bears do come, I recommend “hazing” to help reinforce bears’ natural fear of humans by making loud noises, shouting, banging pots and pans, using an air horn, throwing (non-edible) objects towards the bear, or even using a paintball gun to wallop the adult bear’s (not a cub’s) rump to motivate them to leave.

If you aren’t familiar with the sport, polo has been around since before recorded history. In Central Asia, nomads played a version that was part sport and part training for war. The modern version of the sport that we see today originated in northeastern India. From there, it quickly spread to Malta, England, Ireland, Argentina, and Australia in the late 1800s. In 1876, a publisher at the New York Herald returned from a trip to Britain with mallets and introduced the sport in Westchester County, and it quickly spread across the U.S. PHOTOS BY ANTHONY GIBSON

The Twilight Polo Club kicks off its 128th season at Great Meadows in The Plains his summer, plan to spend an evening tailgating and watching a fast-paced, exhilarating sport at Twilight Polo in the Greenhill Stadium at Great Meadow in The Plains. Never seen the sport before and not sure about it? Polo has something for everyone and is reasonably priced to attend. Whether you are a seasoned polo spectator, a new spectator without knowledge of the sport, or just want an evening out with friends tailgating, Great Meadow on Saturday evenings during the summer is the place to be! And bring the kids; they have just as much fun as the adults. Not only do they get into watching the sport, there are activities for them like a giant tug of war at halftime in the arena.

Presented by Hotels at Sea® Cruises, the evenings are hosted by the Twilight Polo Club, which is one of the largest United States Polo Association clubs in the country. Based in Middleburg during the summertime, it is under the new management team of John Gobin and Whitney Ross. To get into the spirit of the evening, be sure to check the website for the theme of the night. This year’s Twilight Polo season will consist of themed nights including Hawaiian Luau, Cars & Cigars, Life’s A Beach, Pretty In Pink, and more. The first Saturday of every month will feature a DJ so you can dance the night away. Of course, food is paramount to a good time. Put together a fantastic tailgate with linen and china, just bring a picnic, or purchase food and alcohol on site. ”You don’t need to bring anything to enjoy the night. Just show up ready to have a good time,” says Ross.

PORTRAIT OF A POLO PLAYER PAUL BRINKMAN OF THE PLAINS Lawyer by day, Twilight Polo Club polo player on weekends How did you become interested in polo? My wife and I attended Twilight Polo about 5 years ago. I was interested, so she bought me classes at the Twilight Polo School and I’ve been playing ever since. Did you know how to ride when you started? I grew up with horses and did 4-H shows as a kid, but had not been on a horse for 25 years prior to taking classes at the Polo School. Do you own your own polo ponies? Yes, I have two. I board them during the polo season, and they are here on my farm in the winter.

What do you like about polo? It’s very exhilarating when you’re on a pony and galloping out in an arena or on the field. What do you like about polo at Great Meadow? There’s a wide range of people out there who are into it and it makes for a fun group of folks to be playing with. People come from all different walks of life — ex-military, people who have been horsemen all their lives, kids who played polo in college and are continuing. The variety of people who play add to the character and joy of the game. Most people don’t take themselves too seriously. Playing at Great Meadows is great because everyone has a good time and everyone cheers no matter what. The kids come around and ask if they can pet the ponies. It’s a pretty laid-back atmosphere.

POLO 101 COURTESY OF TWILIGHT POLO Twilight polo at Great Meadow is an exciting outing for all! The game is an exhilarating combination of horsepower, athleticism and control. Competing in a 200 x 300 foot arena, players score by driving a ball similar to a soccer ball into the opposing team’s goal using bamboo mallets with a wooden head while riding polo ponies at high speeds. Play Plays are based on the line of the ball, an invisible line created by the ball as it travels down the field. It represents a right-of-way for the last player striking the ball. There are strict rules governing opponents’ entry into the right of way, in the interest of safety. Players may try to “hook” or “ride off” their opponents in an effort to gain control of the ball. Teams and Handicaps A team consists of three mounted players. Each player is denoted a handicap based on ability, horsemanship, understanding of the rules, use to the team, and sportsmanship, and the team handicap is the sum of its players’ total handicaps. A player’s jersey number reflects the position they play. Number 1 is the striker, 2 is the center, and 3 is the back. The Horses The equine athletes carry the traditional name of “polo ponies”, although most are not actually as small as a pony. There are no specifications on height, breed, or gender, though most players choose Thoroughbreds or Thoroughbred crosses. The polo pony is selected carefully for quick bursts of speed, stamina, agility, and maneuverability. The mane is shaved and the tail wrapped to prevent any entanglement in reins, mallets, and other equipment, which is important especially when the ponies are bumping shoulder to shoulder at 35 mph. The polo ponies wear bandages and hard plastic tendon boots to protect all four legs.

Twilight Polo School Watch out, though, polo may become addictive! Want to learn? No worries, head over to the Twilight Polo School, founded by Gobin and Ross. The school was established along with the club to build future generations of players, teaching the importance of riding skills, hitting techniques, horsemanship, and respect for the rules of the game. Gobin, who has been playing polo for over 30 years, is the former captain of the U.S. Polo Team and has played in

prestigious tournaments all over the world. Ross, originally from Charlottesville, has been riding horses since she was young but developed a love for polo while playing during her summers at Virginia Tech. “We’ve seen kids get into the sport by watching Twilight Polo. They want to play and then the families come out and do lessons together,” says Ross. They have since taught dozens of individuals to play at their school where they offer training for players of any experience, including beginners. “The beauty of the school is that we will meet you at your level,” Ross said. “You can do one-off lessons or you can start playing in tournaments. It’s really whatever you’re looking to do. We have at least 30 playing members that are in our club and they all, for the most part, started in our polo school,” says Ross.

Coulibiac of Spinach and Mushroom Paté

Tempt the Taste Buds with a Terrific Polo Tailgate BY KARLA JONES SEIDITA, HOME ECONOMIST

H

eading to a polo match? Pack a picnic to serve from your tailgate and make it a whopper! Tailgating at polo is just as important as the match itself, so it’s a time to showcase your culinary skills complete with a gracious table scape and china place settings. Not exactly Julia Child in the kitchen? Make what you can then fill in with gourmet-to- go. No grills or fires are allowed on polo grounds, so choose a menu that can be served chilled from a cooler or at room temperature. Focus on keeping the food safe by opting for recipes with generous amounts of acidic ingredients such as sugar, lemon juice, and vinegar-y things like pickles. Whether your tailgate style is casual and low key or elegant and fancy, make it one that will knock the socks off your guests and have your neighboring tailgaters drooling! Here’s my idea of a sureto-please lineup, with a couple of the recipes included. TERRIFIC POLO TAILGATE MENU • Charcuterie Board with Fancy Crackers and Crusty Bread • Pitchers of Pimm’s Cup or Bourbon Old Fashioneds • Chilled Cantaloupe Soup • Orange Glazed Cornish Game Hens • Coulibiac of Spinach and Mushroom Pate • Cherry Tomatoes Vinaigrette • Drunk’n Brownies • Local White Wine • Lavender Tea Cakes

Serves 6 to 8 as a main dish, 8-10 as a side. Can be made ahead and refrigerated. A fabulous, show stopping, make ahead side or main dish that’s perfect for polo tailgating. It’s an easy traveler that’s as delicious chilled or at room temperature as it is hot from the oven. Pronounced Koo-lee-bee-ack, it hails from Tsarist Russia when dining was extravagant and over the top. Originally made with local fish and caviar tucked between layers of rice, the recipe has morphed over the years to where you’ll see every kind of layered filling these days: salmon, sausage, eggs, root vegetables, cabbage, potatoes. The recipe may look long, but this is divinely impressive yet surprisingly easy. Here’s my take on this yummy classic….. INGREDIENTS 1 (17 to 20 oz. package) frozen puff pastry (2 sheets - thawed) 1 cup walnut halves & pieces 2 cups instant brown rice 2 1/4 cups vegetable or chicken broth (divided) 1/2 cup fresh parsley leaves, finely chopped (or ¼ cup dried parsley) 6 Tablespoons butter 6 cloves garlic, chopped 3 large onions, chopped (divided) 16 oz. mushrooms (white, portabella or baby bellasliced) 1 ½ teaspoons salt (divided) 1 teaspoon pepper (divided) ¼ teaspoon dried thyme 1/3 cup Marsala wine or sherry 32 oz. frozen spinach, chopped (thawed, rinsed & squeezed almost dry) 1 (10 oz.) can mushroom soup (undiluted-divided) 1 egg

WARRENTON LIFESTYLE

}

DIRECTIONS Toast the walnuts: Bake the nuts on a rimmed baking sheet at 350 degrees until fragrant and lightly toasted – 5 to 10 minutes. Make the rice: Cook according to package directions, using broth and parsley. Remove from heat. Stir in 1/4 of the can of undiluted mushroom soup. Prepare the mushrooms: Melt the butter in a large skillet. Add the garlic, 2 cups onions, ¾ teaspoon salt, and ¾ teaspoon pepper. Cook on medium, stirring, until the onions are soft – about 5 minutes. Add the mushrooms. Cook, stirring occasionally until mushrooms start to brown. Stir in the Marsala or sherry. Cook briefly to evaporate most of the wine. Stir in the toasted walnuts. When the mixture is cool enough to handle, blend in food processor until very smooth, about 5 minutes. Make the spinach: Combine ¼ cup of broth, 1 cup of onions, ¾ teaspoon salt and ¼ teaspoon pepper in a large skillet. Cook till most of the broth has evaporated and the onion is soft – about 5 minutes. Add the spinach. Remove from heat. Stir in remaining 3/4 can of undiluted mushroom soup.

Put it all together Position oven rack in the center. Preheat to 400 degrees. Roll each pastry sheet to 9 x 11 inches on baking parchment. Slide one, with parchment, onto an ungreased cookie sheet. Layer the ingredients as follows, leaving a 2-inch border of pastry on all 4 sides: rice, mushrooms, then spinach. Make the egg wash by beating the egg and water together. Brush it liberally on the empty pastry border. Add the top pastry layer (without its parchment) and crimp the layers together on the sides to form a decorative edge. Brush generously with egg wash. Bake in the preheated oven till well browned but still golden – 45 to 55 minutes. Serve hot, at room temperature or chilled.

This Summer, Travel the Gold Medal Wine Trail! BY MARK LUNA

This past March, in what is now truly a rite-of-wine passage in Virginia, the winners of The Virginia Governor’s Cup were announced. Annually hosted by the Virginia Wineries Association, in partnership with the Virginia Wine Board and the Virginia Vineyards Association, the Governor's Cup recognizes (and awards) the best of the best when it comes to Virginia wine, and is considered by industry standards to be one of the most stringent wine competitions in the

United States. For this year’s Cup, a panel of 22 judges reviewed a record-setting 544 submitted wines, ciders and meads. The arduous process of conducting blind samplings and scorings of each wine - in categories that include appearance, aromas, palate and overall quality – took place in multiple rounds over a four-week period, eventually confirming a single winner. Gold Medals were given to the 96 wines that scored 90 points or higher, and Governor’s Cup Case awards were conferred to the top 12 wines as well. As always, all wines in the competition must be made from 100% Virginia fruit. Adding to the excitement for this year’s competition, and for the enjoyment of Virginia wine lovers, the Virginia Governor’s Cup Gold Medal Wine Trail has been created, a mobile passport that brings gold-medalwinning wineries from the 2021 Virginia Governor’s Cup Competition right to your fingertips…All info can be found at taste.

Nestled on 36 acres bordering Fairfax County, Paradise Springs Winery offers an array of sparkling, white and red wines including its 2021 Governor’s Cup gold medal winner, 2018 Aprés Rosé.

virginiawine.org in an easy 3-step process. On the wine trail itself, gold medal recipients can be found in wineries from the northern tips of the state all the way down to Williamsburg. Obviously, there are far too many wines and wineries to cover in this one piece; but, given our respectable NoVA viticultural locale, a few worthy area wines deserve mentioning here. It’s my hopeful plan to visit as many of these wineries as possible this summer…I hope it is yours as well. Tucked in the north/northwest corner of Virginia, in Loudoun County, lies the family owned and operated Breaux Vineyards, part of the Middleburg AVA. An impressive estate of over 400 acres - with over a fourth of it devoted to 17 different grape varieties - Breaux Vineyards offers long vistas of the Blue Ridge Mountains to complement their award-winning wines. This year, the Governor’s Cup was running over with their wines, with three Gold Medals and two Case winners. Of particular note is their gold medal and case winning 2016 Nebbiolo. A grape of Piemonte, Italy origin, Nebbiolo has found a surprising home in parts of Virginia. Aged 17 months in both new and used French and American oak, Breaux Vineyards 2016 Nebbiolo is a very focused wine, displaying numerous characteristics of

the Nebbiolo grape variety…cherry, violets and tobacco notes aromatically lead to more cherry, red apple and tobacco on the palate. This is a great way to start the red wine portion of your wine Golden Wine Trail trip. Heading south to Fauquier County, you’ll find Delaplane Cellars. Just over a year ago I wrote a column featuring both their wines and acclaimed winemaker Rick Tagg. A Bordeaux devotee, Tagg consistently produces outstanding wines that are inspired by the red wine classic grapes of that region and beyond; and so, it was no surprise to see his 2017 Tannat win a Gold Medal, especially given both his winemaking talents and the beautiful way that the tannat grape grows here in Virginia. Marked by defining notes of raspberry, violets, black currant and mocha, in both aromatics and across the palate, Delaplane Cellars 2017 Tannat is a wine of great depth, structure, and ageworthiness, making this winery a worthy stop

Clockwise from left: The barrel room at Paradise Springs Winery; the Winery at Bull Run’s gold medal winning 2019 Petit Manseng, Breaux Vineyards’ gold medal and Governor’s case winning 2016 Nebbiolo; and Delaplane Cellars’ 2017 Tannat, another of this years’ gold medal winners. Below, the vineyard at Paradise Spring Winery.

on your wine trail journey. For you Virginia white wine fans, The Winery at Bull Run is where you’ll find a wonderful Governor Cup Gold Medal white wine, the 2019 Petit Manseng. The winery itself was established in 2012 as a scenic working farm vineyard, though family lineage dates back to the late 1700’s. It’s situated on 225 acres, adjacent to Manassas National Battlefield Park and is next door to an equestrian farm. As for the wine, the 2019 Petit Manseng offers aromas of fresh pineapple, dried apricot and honey, with a balanced acidity, keeping the wine crisp. More stone fruit and tart key lime decorate the palate. If you’re eager for a great rose`, head over to Paradise Springs Winery, in Clifton. Nestled on 36 acres bordering Fairfax County, Paradise Springs Winery offers an array of sparkling, white and red wines. Their Governor’s Cup gold medal winner 2018 Aprés Rosé is a Brut styled wine, made in the traditional Méthode Champenoise and aged for two years. It’s clean, crisp and fruit-forward. Aprés (after in French) is 95% chardonnay and 5% merlot, and is their tribute to all those extraordinary moments worth celebrating! And finally, only 30 minutes west of Warrenton, out highway(s) 211/522, is a boutique, family-owned winery called Gadino Cellars. Co-founding owners Bill Gadino and Aleta Saccuta Gadino fully realized their winemaking dreams in 1989, with a 15-acre purchase of land in Rappahannock County. A full twelve years devoted to vineyard development would eventually reward them handsomely with beautiful estate wines. As they express, “Our focus is on making small lots of wines from select vineyard blocks reflecting diverse growing conditions and microclimates from Virginia’s best viticulture areas.” Their bottlings have garnered numerous awards, including several Governor’s Cup winners, and 2021 proved to be another great year for them, with their 2017 Petit Verdot taking a Gold Medal. Like cabernet franc and tannat, petit verdot is another red wine grape of French origin that has found a viticultural home in Virginia. Full bodied in nature, a good petit verdot will entice you with rich dark fruit, complex texture and earthy tones. The Gadino Cellars 2017 Petit Verdot follows suit, all the while paying homage to a legendary French grape, with a unique Italian family flare. So, this summer, celebrate the Virginia Governor’s Cup winners and hit the trail… until next time, Happy Vino’ing!

A Different Kind of Camp Girls lacrosse camp strengthens athletes, leadership and spirituality

A

local non-denominational Christian organization with national roots has a mission to help athletes and coaches in Fauquier, Rappahannock, and Culpeper. The FRC chapter of the FCA strives to help the next generation of leaders enter into a growing relationship with Jesus Christ by challenging them physically, mentally and spiritually. The FCA dedicates time year round and nation-wide, on and off the field, to empower students and coaches to strengthen their faith and leadership skills. Students in middle and high school are able to step into a new level of performance - in sports and in life - through their experiences with the FCA. This summer, FRC FCA will host a lacrosse camp in Fauquier County for middle

and high school aged girls. “The camp will involve three days of inspiration, training and perspiration that challenge each athlete to reach her full potential as a lacrosse player and become a difference-maker on her team,” says Scot Small, FRC FCA area director. In an environment that encourages athletes to excel in lacrosse and in their faith, the camp will take place July 19-21 from 9am to 3pm at Fauquier High School. “The athletes will make new friends, participate in

PROFESSIONAL, PERSONALIZED SERVICE

group games and experience huddle groups that will touch their hearts and strengthen their faith,” says Small. This summer camp experience is open to all levels of proficiency and beginners to elite players are welcome. Collegiate division 1 and 3 coaches are slated to attend. The cost is $150, but scholarships are available and no one is turned away due to money. Register at frcfca.org/girls-lacrosse-camp-fca-virginia For information on FRC FCA, visit frcfca.org
