The People’s Sheriff “Sheriff Robert (Bob) Mosier has been a true leader in the law enforcement community.” — Karl C. Colder Special Agent in Charge (ret.) Washington Division, US Drug Enforcement Administration

?

“I’ve known Bob Mosier for more than 25 years. Bob is someone that can be trusted to fulfil his promises. As an example, the Sheriff’s Office achieved Law Enforcement Accreditation for the first time in 2018 noting that a low crime rate and public safety are essential to economic development and the success of local business. I

think I’ve started every editors note I’ve ever written in the summertime with “I’m from New England and I can’t stand the heat down here.” The first year I moved down here I actually packed up and went home when mid-June hit, not coming back until late October. Well, once you grow up, life’s not like that...no taking six months and just taking off and supporting yourself by waiting tables at a summer resort and hoping your job was still available upon your return. Well, I’m over it now. I’m a grown up. I’m good. I can handle it. Probably mostly because I work in an air-conditioned office during the week, I figure I can hack the heat on weekends. This year I vow to keep my flower beds weeded, no matter how hot it gets. So what’s good about the summertime? Well, the food, for one thing. I have a questionably successful herb garden with a minimal amount of herbs in my backyard. Basil, oregano, and rosemary. And, of course, all those pesky chive-type weed things that keep popping up everywhere. But while we have fresh herbs in the summer, I rarely remember to go pick any and use them. So we came up with Recipes by the Herb, and gathered recipes specifically for herbs you may have growing in your yard as we speak. And these are such fresh, summery recipes! Get the freshest local vegetables and meats, maybe from the farms market or your local CSA, and start cooking! And as far as berries, it’s berry-picking season...head to your local berry patch and gather your own berries...that is absolutely the freshest you’ll get...right from the far! This summer, enjoy the bounty that Virginia can provide from the land, and enjoy the heat!

PACK YOUR BAGS

A staple for many travelers is a good book, or two, to enjoy while sitting poolside or to devour during a long flight. To fill that need, be sure to stop by your local library to stock up on books to tuck into your suitcase. Visit the new books shelf for something fresh off the presses, or browse one of the many displays for reading inspiration. Be sure to check out these hot summer titles coming to Fauquier County Public Library shelves this summer.

Mrs. Everything by Jennifer Weiner Any new title from bestselling author Jennifer Weiner is guaranteed to have readers clamoring for their copy. This story of an owner of a plus-sized bridal boutique who encounters a former crush is already quite popular with local library patrons. Queen Bee by Dorothea Benton Frank Stories set in the Lowcountry of South Carolina are always popular, especially when they are written by Dorothea Benton Frank. Frank returns to Sullivan’s Island with this story of two very different sisters dealing with newfound romance, the end of a marriage, and bees. Summer of ’69 by Elin Hilderbrand Set in Nantucket during the summer of 1969, this chronicles both national upheavals and family dramas during a momentous time in American history.

WE WOULD LOVE TO HAVE PARTIES, BUT WE HAVE LITTLE KIDS. IS THERE A WAY WE CAN HAVE BOTH? Absolutely you can. Whether entertaining at home or going to someone else’s, get a roll of chalkboard cloth. It’s durable, portable, and fun. Roll it out for the kids and let them play on the easily cleanable surface while the adults relax and reconnect. Cut smaller, placematsized pieces and bring them with you to restaurants to keep the kids entertained while they wait for their food. PRO TIP

If you look online you can still find primers on their proper use. You can add another decorative element by floating a flower in the bowl or, for extra practicality and sanitation, add a slice of lemon. PRO TIP

IS THERE AN OPTION THAT WON’T SPILL AND TAKES UP LESS ROOM? Of course. You can place a decorative “salt cellar” on the table. There are some truly beautiful options for these small vessels and if you’d like to be doubly fancy, splurge on the horn spoon as well. PRO TIP

JIM RANKIN: war hero, entrepreneur, community servant STORY BY GARY CARROLL | PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE

W

ithin our community we have a war hero, entrepreneur, public servant, and civic leader all rolled into one individual — Jim Rankin, owner of Rankin’s Hardware and Rankin’s Furniture Store in Warrenton. And yet, when asked for an interview for Lifestyle, he asked why anyone would be interested in hearing his story, saying all he could offer was that he is a lifetime resident of Fauquier Country and a local businessman. There’s so much more to his story. His family lived and farmed in Bealeton when he was born in 1931. If you meet him for the first time, however, you may distrust this calculation of his age. His energy, fitness, and apparent good health suggests a man much younger than 88. Listening to his story, on the other hand, may lead you to wonder how someone could accomplish so much in one lifetime, especially without a complete formal education. His daughter probably summed it up best; when asked to chat about her father she simply said, “He’s a great man.”

In 1951, he volunteered for the U.S. Army during a period of intense fighting in the Korean War-the “forgotten war” between World War II and the Vietnam conflict. Why volunteer? Well, Rankin said he thought it was his duty to serve, following in his father’s footsteps, who was a decorated soldier fighting in France during World War I. Clay Preston Rankin won the Silver Star for heroism when he showed “remarkable courage” under heavy enemy machine-gun fire. He also received the Italian War Cross and was recommended for the Distinguished Service Cross. His memory was honored in 2015 when the Meetze Road Bridge over Route 29 in Warrenton was renamed PFC Clay Preston Rankin, USA Bridge. Jim Rankin’s next call to duty led to his entering the Korean War as part of the elite 187th Airborne Infantry Combat Team. During his 26 months of combat duty, he earned two Bronze Stars for bravery under fire and the Combat Infantry Badge. He remembers being called on to put down a revolt and attempted escape by some 80,000 enemy soldiers from a POW camp on the island of Koje-Do. Prisoners dug tunnels and fashioned homemade weapons, including knives, firearms and Molotov cocktails. Rankin’s unit was tasked with putting down the revolt and recapturing the prisoners. He recalled that they were forced to use flamethrowers to force prisoners out of the tunnels, and bayonets to subdue them in hand-to-hand combat. Returning to the States in 1953, Rankin joined Trentis General Store in Catlett and worked there and at the Trentis store in Warrenton until 1965. In January 1966, over his wife’s objections, he borrowed the necessary funds and struck out on his own in the hardware business, establishing Rankin’s True Value Hardware at the Warrenton Northern Virginia Shopping Center.

This venture required a good deal of risk and self-confidence on his part. In 1979, his success allowed him to expand his business to a larger location in the same shopping center, where it is currently located. Over time, he expanded his business further by opening True Value Hardware stores in King George and Colonial Beach, managed by two of his children, Alvin and Beverly. His son Glen now manages the hardware store in Warrenton. In 1992, he branched out further by opening the furniture store at the intersection of Routes 29 and 211, where he sells high quality furniture with the assistance of his daughter Alice. It means a lot to Rankin that all his children have joined him, making it a real family business. When reminded that some believe his prices are higher than some chain furniture stores in the area, he insisted he takes pride in selling only good quality furniture. While running his businesses, Rankin entered public service and was elected to the County Board of Supervisors where he served from 1984 to 1992. This was a period of great change for the county. This was a time when the population of the county increased dramatically, and the Board had to confront the challenges of growth in the county. It was also during this period that Rankin appointed the first African American, Roland Tapscott, to a major county position — the County Planning Commission. Rankin was the logical choice when a serving Supervisor died in 1998 leaving a vacancy that Rankin filled for an interim period. Somehow Rankin found time to help “Improve the Quality of Life for all Fauquier Citizens” as an award from the Department of Parks and Recreation noted. He is a Life Member of the U.S. Jaycees after serving many years with the Warrenton chapter of this community service organization. He helped to establish the local American Legion Post and has served as the Commander during his time as a member. He has received awards from the national

American Legion for his contributions and formal recognition from the Rotary Club, Liberty and Fauquier High Schools, County Parks and Recreation, as well as Little League baseball teams that he has sponsored. In addition, he has been an active leader in the work of Midland Brethren Church where he is a member. Clearly, he is extensively involved in his community. Don’t worry, despite his 88 years, he has not thought of retiring. He said he must work to keep from going crazy. And then, with a slight smile, he added, “but maybe I’ll take a little more time off.” And he has quite the family to spend his growing free time with. Rankin and his wife Shirley just celebrated their 65 wedding anniversary this past March. In addition to their four children, eight grandchildren, and 16 great-grandchildren, the couple just welcomed their first great, greatgrandchild, a girl, this past February. ❖

Let cool a bit. Transfer into a plastic container, and put in the fridge to cool down. 5. Once the syrup is completely cool (refrigerator temperature), add the basil paste and stir to combine. 7. Transfer to ice cream or sorbet machine and process, or, if you don’t have one: 8. Pour a very thin layer of the mixture onto a cookie sheet. Place in freezer until completely frozen. 9. Shave the frozen mixture from the cookie sheet with a metal scraper. 10. Serve immediately with a slice of watermelon.

It’ll keep for several days when refrigerated and goes nicely over rice, too. 3. When Oven Reaches 500 Degrees: Remove cast iron skillet and turn off the oven. 4. Gently rub both sides of the salmon with olive oil and season with salt and pepper. 5. Put the skillet on your stovetop at medium high heat and place the fish flesh side down. 6. Cook

for 3-4 minutes depending on thickness. Don’t move it, just let it cook. 7. After 3-4 minutes, flip the salmon and turn the heat to medium

low. You want the skin to get nice and crispy and for the salmon to cook. It’ll take anywhere between 9 to 12 minutes and technically

should be 125 degrees for medium rare. 8. Test for doneness with a fork. If the pieces come apart easily, it’s done. ❖

othing says summer like spending the day of opening of pick-your-own berry season with family and friends. And it’s no surprise that Fauquier County has some of the best U-Pick ‘em berry picking farms ripe with berries and rich in history. Ask any resident what they like best about Fauquier County, and a lot of them will tell you that their favorite part is the geography: the natural landscape of rolling hills, farmland and forests for miles around. This type of land has proven a boon to local farmers across the county, many of which are currently deep into this year’s berry picking season. Messick’s Farm Market, Hollin Farm, Hartland Orchard, and Green Truck Farm, are all family-owned, and some have been operating under the same family for generations — eight, in the case of Hartland Orchard. The season for families to come and pick their own berries is typically lauded as a highlight of the year for all the farmers.

Farming is hard. These farmers are up very early (as early as 2:30 a.m. for the dairy farmers) taking care of their livestock and then moving on to caring for their vegetable and berry fields, all the while taking care of their pick-your-own customers. These farms are open for pick-your-own three seasons out of four, and are sure to have something in season throughout that time. Why do they do it? For the love of fresh food, mainly. Jimmy Messick and Caitlin Taylor of Messick’s Farm Market said, “Our goal is to bring people back to their roots of food production and picking your own produce is a natural part of that.” Welcoming the community is paramount to all the farmers, who enjoy berry picking season

To enhance their customers’ farm experience, the farms also offer family-friendly activities. Corn mazes, family fun fields, strawberry festivals, pumpkin patches, and hay rides are just some of the activities offered at different times of the year. But Hollin Farm prefers to keep it simple and down-to-earth. Shannon Davenport said, “We want primary enjoyment to be on the experience itself. Being out in nature with the fruit trees, flowers, berries, and the birds is the main thing to appreciate. And we have views that will take your breath away. We serve locally made ice cream, which gets rave reviews. It’s a nice way to end a visit to the farm.” ❖

Early morning is cooler and more pleasant, but keep in mind that if it has rained overnight, the berries should have time to dry before they are picked.

THINGS TO BRING • Hat • Sunscreen • Water • Insect repellant • Mud boots if it has rained recently • Cooler with ice to transport fruits home • Snacks or a picnic lunch

INGREDIENTS store-bought pie dough, 2 rolls 2 1/2 cups fresh blueberries 2 1/2 cups fresh strawberries, quartered 2 cups fresh raspberries 1 cup granulated sugar 1 tablespoon lemon juice 4 to 5 tablespoons cornstarch 2 tablespoons butter 1 egg white, beaten with a fork DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare the crust: on a floured surface, roll the pie dough to a circle about a half-inch larger than your pie plate. Press the dough into the pie plate gently, and trim and crimp the edges of the dough. Refrigerate while preparing the filling. 2. Place berries, sugar and lemon juice in a large saucepan over medium heat. Simmer, until warm and juicy, about 5-10 minutes, stirring occasionally. 3. Gently stir 4 tablespoons cornstarch into berries and allow to simmer until thickened, about 5 minutes. If the mixture is still runny, add another tablespoon of cornstarch and simmer for 1 minute

loner. You want the berry mixture to be thick. 4. Remove from heat and stir in the butter. 5. Remove pie plate from the refrigerator and pour warm berry mixture into unbaked pie shell. Use second pie crust to make a lattice top by cutting the dough into strips and criss-crossing them. 6. Brush a thin layer of beaten egg white over the top of the pie and sprinkle lightly with sugar. 7. Bake at 400° F for 40-45 minutes total. Check pie after about 25 minutes and place a piece of tinfoil over the pie to prevent the crust from burning. 8. Remove to a wire cooling rack and allow to cool before slicing.

Beyond beer & wine C

ider and mead are usually associated with autumn orchards and Renaissance Fairs. But the drinks are gaining popularity as more mainstream libations, fresh alternatives to beer and wine. You may be surprised — as was I — to learn there is a lot more to both beverages than you might imagine. You can experience a variety of both by visiting Hinson Ford Cider & Mead, located about 2 miles off Rt. 211 in Amissville, just inside Rappahannock County. Hinson Ford Cider & Mead opened to the public at the end of September 2018, after several years of careful planning and local market testing by the three partners Dennis Kelly, Mary Graham, and Dave Shiff. Kelly and Graham have been making cider, beer, wine and mead together since the mid ‘80s; Shiff has been making cider for the last decade. Hinson Ford is located on Shiff’s 22-acre property at the end of the road of the same name, surrounded by woods with a delightful view of the northern section of Shenandoah National Park over acres of pasture land.

The team has found a niche in the increasingly competitive cider and mead market by producing mostly dry, sparkling products — not like the sweet, still offerings frequently found at your local grocery or bar. The ciders emulate traditional dry English cider styles, and are made from a blend of apples specifically selected for their ideal cider qualities, obtained and custom-pressed by Thornton River Orchards in nearby Sperryville. Sampling the varieties of ciders can be quite a learning experience. I was offered four varieties with distinctively different tastes. My favorite was ginger cider — imagine less sweet apples with a hint of ginger. For those who enjoy hops, there is a hopped variety as well. Hinson Ford Cider & Mead is enthusiastic about their new joint venture with the Honeybee Initiative of George Mason University. The Honeybee Initiative, founded in 2012 to promote the cause of our threatened pollinators, has recently

installed 15 new beehives in the Hinson Ford’s apiary. Besides serving as a source of hyper-local honey for various meads, this cooperative venture will use the meadery/ cidery as a venue for undergraduate and graduate studies in sustainability, entrepreneurship, environmental studies, and a host of other events. Kelly said, “About 90 percent of our interactions with the public are as evangelists for drinkable mead — not the cloyingly sweet, heavy stuff you might have had at Renaissance Festivals — and for appreciating the amazing qualities of honey,” adding that few people ever taste anything besides commodity grade clover honey or maybe wildflower honey, when there are over 130 varietal honeys, each with their own distinctive flavor profile. Honey bees select nectar from just one type of flower at a time, providing the unique honeys like goldenrod and orange blossom that are the foundation of Hinson Ford’s meads. The additions of fruits like strawberry and elderberry (picked from a single huge bush on Kelly and Graham’s nearby homestead) contributes a little something unique to the taste of the mead. The orange blossom varietal mead (made with nothing but orange blossom honey, from Windsong Apiary in Castleton) has a delicate floral nose with a strong citrus finish and the impression of sweetness. I sampled four varieties, which are not as strong as some market meads, and must admit my favorite was the slightly sweeter “Dark Skies Bochet” (made from caramelized honey fermented with maple syrup) — their biggest seller — but I also very much enjoyed the elderberry mead. Visiting Hinson Ford in itself is a treat. A favorite of hikers returning from Shenandoah National Park, the tasting room has a rustic and inviting feel to it, and visitors can sit outside at one of the outdoor tables to enjoy the fresh air, peaceful atmosphere, and views of the mountains. Visitors are welcome to enjoy a free tour of the modest production facility and hear about the particulars of cider and mead making. ❖

MOO THRU a hit with locals for premium ice cream from real dairy farmers

STORY AND PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK

O

n a Tuesday early afternoon, even with storm clouds quickly approaching, the line for ice cream at Moo Thru was still building, both by foot at the walk up window and by car at the drive through. Most visitors took their delicious treats to the outdoor picnic tables to enjoy but others took it with them on their ride home. If you live anywhere near Remington, Moo Thru is the place to go for hand-crafted ice cream, shakes, malts, and

sundaes, but the smell of homemade waffles will tempt even those passing through down James Madison Highway. Since June of 2010, families have flocked to Moo Thru for “real ice cream from real dairy farmers.” Founded by fourth-generation dairy farmer Ken Smith, the little red building is a landmark in the outskirts of the small town of Remington. The family farm, two miles away from the store, is where the Holstein cows are raised and fed the healthiest diet to produce the high quality milk for Moo Thru’s delectable treats. “We care about our farmland, our cows, and our community. Our

ice cream is made from only the finest ingredients we can find, both locally sourced and from around the world,” said Smith and Chief Operating Officer Emily Julian. The ice cream is handcrafted and slowchurned, Julian explained, pointing out that sometimes people don’t realize exactly what this means. Moo Thru’s ice cream is made literally by hand in small batches. There are no machines. Each batch is crafted by measuring out the ingredients individually by hand. Julian said, “You can taste the combination of the fresh milk, gourmet ingredients, and handcrafted attention to detail in this premium product.” The result is a dense and pure ice cream unique to this charming little shop. Among the honors Moo Thru has received are a designation as one of Virginia’s Finest Products, voted locally as “best” ice cream and dessert, and a certificate of excellence from TripAdvisor. But Julian said the shop desires to be known also for its contributions to the community, such as supporting local schools and churches by hosting spirit nights and giving

back to charities in addition to employing and mentoring the youth in the community. In any given season, as many as 60 hardworking, diverse young people may be employed here — so many that one year Moo Thru had to close on Prom Night because there were no staff to work that night. “The kids here never cease to amaze me with how much they value their differences and help each other out,” said Julian. Even when they go off to college, most of them come back to work during the summers. While the main favorites are consistent on the menu — hand-scooped cones, milk shakes banana splits, milk in a glass — the menu at Moo Thru also evolves year to year and season to season. Production team members are always finding new ways to add a twist to products to keep customers happy and coming back to try new flavors. A current new favorite is blackberry merlot with dark chocolate chunks and bourbon caramel. There is something for everyone; those who require dairy free can enjoy sorbets, and sugar-free ice cream is available on request. So if you haven’t ventured out to Moo Thru, put it on your list of places to visit. Dog and kid-friendly, it will be a memorable evening out with the family. Go to moothru.com for directions and hours; they are closed on Mondays. ❖

The Game Store in Warrenton; the newest hub for local gamers STORY BY GARY CARROLL PHOTOS BY KARA THORPE

V

isitors to Warrenton’s new Game Store will find a large but comfortable room with long wooden tables packed with excited game players of all ages. Experience levels of the players vary wildly, and while some are casual players, many are very dedicated and practiced in the games. Some will be playing one of the numerous available board games already set up and ready to go, and others will be enjoying the snacks and drinks available for purchase or just laughing and chatting with new friends. Owner Cameron Rivenbark opened the store just over a year ago because his entire family—he, his wife, and three small children— are gamers. After learning there were no game stores in the Warrenton area, he started his own to provide an alternative to electronic games. The atmosphere feels a little bit mysterious, appropriate for the other-worldly imaginary “realities” that most of the games are played in, as if you’re entering an environment where a fantastical world is not only possible, but available to enter. Local artist Sarah Miller’s fine art prints, hung on the walls, make the various games come alive with their many fantastic characters and scenes. For Brandon Owens, partner and manager of The Game Store, this is a dream job, since

Brandon Owens, partner and manager, playing Magic with a regular gamer

he’s an avid gamer himself. His previous job, selling insurance, just wasn’t his thing. Here, he is able to build a gaming community, connect with fellow gamers, both experienced and new, and introduce new people to gaming. “People don’t realize how many people play these games,” he said. Brandon welcomes all visitors to The Game Store, regardless of experience level. So, you don’t know how to play one of the most popular games like the card games Magic and Pokemon, the tabletop war game Warhammer, or the highest rated board game ever made, Gloomhaven? No problem, it is easy to find a regular gamer or store employee willing to help you to get started on these games. Brandon teaches some card game classes once a month, mostly Magic and Keyforge, and other volunteers teach the war games such as the extremely popular Warhammer. Michael Miller, Ryan Kaffa, and Rachel and L.J. Blakey are some of these community leaders, as they are called, who volunteer their time for love of the game and the gaming community. Many of the games are strategic challenges. In Magic, for example, your goal is to use strategic thinking and your cards — representing different characters and strengths — to reduce your opponent’s “life total” until they have none remaining. One uses cards representing various strengths to win incremental engagements as the contest progresses. The different settings and eras that are played in can best be described as “realities,” according to Brendan, and they can differ widely. There are thousands of cards available for purchase to use in the contests, from individual cards to packs of random cards to specialty cards, kept in a glass case.

“People don’t realize how many people play these games”

Not into fantasy games played in different “realities”? If you are more of a traditionalist, you may choose to play one of the old favorites — Clue, Life, or Chess, for example. Whatever your preference, the lively atmosphere and friendly patrons are likely to entice you to stay and join the fun. During my visit, a young woman player volunteered that she always feels welcome, especially on Saturday evenings, when she and other Dungeons and Dragons fans gather to play. The Game Store also maintains tabletop sets for war games such as Warhammer, a high strategy game that rivals chess in its complexity. The tables are set up with laser-cut models of a game setting, either futuristic or fantasy themed, such as abandoned buildings, hills, trees, and more. Gamers bring their own “armies”: models of people, tanks, airplanes, etc. to compete against other players on the sets. “People will come in to play rolling a big crate with all their models in it,” said Brandon.

“It’s a big deal.” These models are handmade by the gamer from a kit, and hand painted to their imagination. Kits and the necessary paints are sold at The Game Store. Brandon said, it takes a lot of commitment to build your models and play this game.” What ages are welcome at The Game Stop? It’s really for all ages, said Brendan, but there are some recommendations for game selection. Most of the card games are appropriate for younger players as young as six or eight, who sometimes beat seasoned adults at Pokemon or Magic. But the tabletop war games are recommended for older players, starting at about age 15 or 16. The games are realistic enough to be violent, and frankly, some of the models are scary-looking. Also, the sets are quite fragile and delicate, and are therefore not suitable for younger players. You’re likely to meet both casual and very serious players. Some work very hard to improve their skills so that they can compete in local and even national tournaments. For instance, The Game Store holds Invitational Qualifier tournaments for Warhammer, which are open to those invited to play. These tournaments will result in winners who would be qualified to play in even bigger venues nationally. For an Invitational Qualifier, Brandon would expect about 130 people — the building’s capacity — and for it to last up to 12 hours. Those going forward to play in national tournaments have the opportunity to win up to $35,000, and some tournaments award much more. The tournaments welcome all ages; a recent qualifier was an eight-year-old girl. Sometimes, between tournaments and games, The Game Store can have up to five events in a weekend, meaning they are almost open round the clock. Tournaments in the past have stretched up to two days, with players leaving briefly to go get some sleep, and coming

back early the next morning. Less formal Magic Tournaments are held on Fridays beginning at 7 p.m., where players will include entire families, children, and both young and older adults. The Game Stop is also available for special occasion celebrations. If you’re into gaming, this is the place to go. Bring a pizza, and take advantage of The Game Stop’s relationship with Coldstone, which makes arranging a cake easy. Patrons are welcome to bring outside food and drinks, only alcohol is not permitted. Are the parties just for kids? No, said Brandon, most of the parties are actually adults. Gaming is for fun, but it’s also some serious stuff to some grown-ups. The Game Store also sells a wide variety of the games, and the equipment necessary to play them, and also has an online store. But it’s the close-knit community that is being built in the brick-and-mortar store that is most fulfilling. Brandon explained, “The store sells hobbies for lifelong enjoyment and an opportunity to build friendships. It’s become a real community. [Folks] come for the experience of learning and competing with like-minded gamers.” They stay because it’s fun! ❖

GARDEN GUESTS: the good, the bad, and the ICKY

REPEL PESTS WITH COMPANION PLANTS

BY STELLA VERADUCCIA

Y Tomato hornworm: icky bad bug.

Ladybug: adorable good bug.

amended with natural compost. Consider plant rotation when deciding what to put where; don’t put the same plant in the same spot year after year. Thoroughly clean up the area because pests breed beneath fallen leaves, limbs, and debris; remove any bugs lurking under rocks, boards, or planters. Choose healthy nursery plants and pest-resistant cultivars, avoiding distressed or damaged specimens.

ou look out at your garden with immense satisfaction: your seedlings matured into full-grown plants and everything is thriving. In the spring, you followed all the rules for soil preparation and planting, and now you admire the fruits of your labor. You walk through the garden to enjoy a closer look and revel in its beauty when … wait … why are there holes in those leaves? What’s all the fuzzy stuff on that stem? And what is that hideous thing on the tomato plant? The bugs have arrived. It’s as if one of them posted your place on Facebug or Insectagram and they all showed up, ready to party. Because last winter was so mild, this summer is likely to be prolific, bug-wise. While you may be tempted to deploy the mother-ofall-pesticides to wipe out the buggy flash mob, there are safer measures to rid your garden of pests.

PRACTICE EARLY PREVENTION

If you didn’t do this in the spring, you’ll remember for next year. Start with healthy soil that has been

Some herbs and flowers are natural pest-repellents: marigolds, basil, thyme, rosemary, chives, and parsley, to name a few. Others both repel pests and attract beneficial insects: catnip, dill, mint, and nasturtium. Include these among your other plants when planning your garden.

REMOVE PESTS MANUALLY

This requires fortitude, high tolerance for ickyness, and really good gardening gloves. That hideous thing on the tomato plant? It’s the hornworm, which can strip a giant plant down to bare stems. Pluck the squishy thing and drop it into soapy water to drown; ditto for other caterpillars, large beetles, and slugs. Smaller pests like aphids and spider mites can be blasted off plants with a strong spray from the garden hose. You can also gently shake a branch or stem over a sticky board to dislodge pests.

INVITE BENEFICIAL INSECTS

Not all bugs are bad; some are so good they should have their own national holidays. Ladybugs devour aphids, mealybugs, scale and other small, soft-bodied pests and eggs. Lacewings look like emissaries from fairyland, but their larvae consume mass quantities of nasty leafhoppers, thrips, whiteflies, and other pests. Parasitic wasps lay eggs on hosts, which are devoured by the hatching

larvae; if you see rows of tiny white bumps on the back of that hideous hornworm, its days are numbered. And then there’s the heavy artillery -“predatory true bugs” with fabulous names like assassin bug, spined soldier bug, pirate bug, and mealybug destroyer. You can order good bugs online, and should also install pollenor nectar-producing plants to keep them around.

USE A NATURAL, ORGANIC SPRAY

Spraying should be a last resort; it can destroy the beneficial insects and pollinators you want to keep in your garden. Certain pests require certain formulations: Bacillus thuringiensis (or Bt) is a bacterium effective on caterpillars; a solution of neem oil and insecticidal soap works on small bugs like aphids, mites, scale, and gnats, among others. An all-purpose agent can be made by grinding up a garlic bulb and an onion, adding a teaspoon of cayenne pepper and a quart of water, steeping the mixture for an hour, then straining it into a clean spray bottle and adding a tablespoon of liquid dish soap. To be effective, sprays must come in contact with bugs and should be applied late in the day so that the sun doesn’t cook your plants. Together, these practices form a system known as “integrated pest management” or IPM which, depending on your garden, could be a full-time job – after all, there are jillions of the little buggers out there. One helpful resource is the Master Gardener program of the local County Extension office, providing trained volunteers to diagnose plant problems and suggest solutions. Online, there’s rodalesorganiclife. com and motherearthnews.com, or you can download a nifty app called The IPM Toolkit. For the immense satisfaction you desire from your garden, you must be relentless in beating the bad bugs. ❖
