’m going to go out on a limb here and share something that is very personal and very important. I’m going to trust my readers. June is national men’s health month, and I've been working with Dr. DeCastro at Fauquier Health on an important article on men’s health. A couple of years ago, I insisted that my husband get a physical with our primary care provider. Men don’t like the doctor as a rule, and we had depended for years on a yearly cursory physical that his company had always done for insurance purposes. Turns out, they weren’t testing for something that turned out to be crucial for men-a blood test measuring PSA, or prostate specific antigen. Long story short, prostate cancer, surgery. Long story short, because we caught it in time, the prognosis is good, although we still wait with bated breath every three months when he gets his follow up PSA blood tests. Because we caught it early the side effects are minimal and manageable. But, ladies, let’s face it. Would he have gone to get a regular physical without me insisting on it? Not in a million years would he have come up with that idea on his own. So sometimes we have to take the lead here. Warrenton Lifestyle, as a rule, is supposed to be a happy magazine, but we still address serious concerns to members of our community. In a way, if I reach even one person, it may be the most important article I’ve ever written. Of course, on a lighter note, there is a celebration for men in June: Father’s Day. A fly fishing photo essay from Doug Lees and a guide to local breweries are geared towards those fathers out there. Put your foot down, guys-no wineries on Father’s Day, enjoy a local beer instead! And, of course, June is the month we celebrate our graduates! See two features inside about our Fauquier class of 2021. We recognize their accomplishments and perseverance through what may be the most difficult year of education ever. Congratulations!

any of you have been enjoying, and learning from, the IT articles Dok Klaus of Dok Klaus Computer Care has written over the many years Warrenton Lifestyle has been publishing, both for Tony and Holly Tedeschi and through the transition to current Rappahannock Media ownership. Not only is Klaus a longtime local business owner and valued member of the community, but also a great friend of the magazine. This is a unique article from him, because it’s not from an IT perspective, but from his heart. He wants to connect with his readers on a more personal level and we are happy to provide a forum for that. Klaus writes of the importance of family, and I believe support from our tight-knit community is also invaluable to him during this time. We thank him for all his articles and expertise, and welcome any more that might come our way.
over Zoom, check my medical charts online, Skype with family in Germany, and then log in remotely to client computers to help with their IT issues. This has been especially great during the pandemic, since I was immunocompromised, but could still communicate with the outside world. Most of the time, I am feeling ok, but am more tired than usual. I still work at the office, but less than before. I have been able to keep the family business running with the help of my great team, including my wife and daughters. I just hired two new employees to help with our workload and hope to run the business for some more years. Next year, 2022 will be our 20th year of business! If you’d like to help us, please bring in your computer for servicing or buy gift cards. And a good word from clients has always helped. We appreciate all your support and the kind words from those who have heard about my diagnosis. Looking back, I don’t regret starting my own business. It has been adventurous, but rewarding. Being your own boss makes you work even harder and you have to live with your decisions. Also, the regular paycheck and weekends off were nice, too. I’ve enjoyed the freedom to make decisions about the work my team and I do. Over

e can all agree that 2020 was tough. For me it was a lifechanging year and 2021 has been much the same. On the evening before the election last year, I suddenly had a seizure and after some scans I was diagnosed with a brain tumor. Totally unexpected! Most of the tumor was removed a week later. Thankfully I survived both the seizure and the brain surgery and woke up again with my mind intact. Following the surgery, I endured weeks of chemotherapy and radiation. More treatments continue, but this kind of cancer has no cure yet. Currently I am wearing a cool medical device on my head called Optune, which is supposed to stop any cancer cells from multiplying. It is amazing how technology has changed over the years. Doctors are able to scan my brain and find tiny cancer cells. On one day I can consult with medical professionals

the years, I was able to improve the quality of our services at Dok Klaus Computer Care, teach classes, and provide one-onone instruction for anyone who wanted to learn more about using their computer. I am grateful for my employees for their extra support these past months and proud of what we have accomplished together! I am happy with what I achieved in my life, but things have not always gone the way I expected them to. But we all have to make the best out of our situation. Now I get to say goodbye to friends and family over the next months and years. Many people just die unexpectedly from an accident, a stroke, or COVID-19 without having that opportunity. I know people that were dying in the hospital without their loved ones able to visit them. In that respect, I consider myself lucky. I can have my family around me, with my daughters each doing their own part: Silvia who lives in Germany was able to visit and take an active role in keeping the company running. Melanie has been a strong emotional support and Martha has kept us organized. In June and July, I will visit my family in Germany as well. When you don’t know how long you have, family becomes more important than ever. Hold your loved ones close.

Health Facts Men Should Know
Dr. Brian DeCastro, Urologist at Fauquier Health
June is Men's Health Awareness Month
L
et’s face it. Everyone knows what mammograms are, and that women need to get them regularly. But what about men? Do you know what a PSA test is? It’s a blood test that measures Prostate Specific Antigen, and it’s a screening tool for prostate cancer. “I’d never heard of a PSA test,” says Mary Ann Perrin of Warrenton (not her real name). “We didn’t know it was something that was important to keep up with as men get older. My husband hardly ever went to the doctor, so he’d never had one. When he finally did go, in his sixties, his PSA was elevated. His primary care physician sent him right to a urologist.” Women are, in general, very health conscious and actually keep up with regular checkups and tests. Men, on the other hand, “are not always the most ideal patient,” says Sarah Cubbage, marketing director at Fauquier Health. It is typical to see that men are not as proactive about their health and often forgo regular yearly physicals. Why is that? “It is very typical of men to want to avoid the doctor. They feel uncomfortable or they don’t like to talk about personal issues – especially urology related issues,” says Dr. Brian DeCastro, Urologist at Fauquier Health. “Some men see it as a sign of weakness, others feel they are too busy, and some just hope their issues will go away by ignoring them.” “We need to encourage wives to be more proactive with their husband’s health,” says Sarah.

See your doctor or urologist if you: Just like with cardiac health, men need to have urologic checkups regularly. Normally, a visit to your primary care doctor is a good start. “Men may not feel comfortable discussing issues with a male doctor, much less a female one,” says Dr. DeCastro. This can really cause a crucial lapse in health care for men. Mary Ann said, “My husband had been for a pre-surgical physical a few years before, but the nurse practitioner was a client of his and maybe didn’t want to embarrass him, and the exam was less than thorough. If she’d been more thorough, we might have caught the cancer a few years earlier.” Dr. DeCastro says, “If you don’t feel comfortable talking about urologic issues with your primary care provider, ask for a referral to an urologist. A lot of insurance plans don’t require a referral for a specialist these days, so you can just call us up and

we’ll be happy to help you out.” Some men’s health conditions have physical symptoms, but some don’t, so it’s important to talk about any symptoms that are not normal. “I see a lot of men that don’t come in for months when they have symptoms. They put it off, especially if it’s not painful. They’re either in denial or they hope their symptoms will just go away,” says Dr. DeCastro. It’s absolutely crucial to have regular check ups to catch conditions that are often asymptomatic, like prostate cancer. That’s why screening is so important. Men’s health issues to screen for: Prostate Cancer Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death in men, second only to lung cancer. It is the male equivalent of breast cancer. “There seems to be a myth out there that prostate cancer is not very dangerous or aggressive. Each year, about 30,000 men die from prostate cancer. It is extremely treatable as long as it’s caught early.” A cancer diagnosis doesn’t necessarily mean immediate surgery or radiation. “Fortunately, we can even watch some less aggressive forms of prostate cancer. If you do need
surgery,” Dr. DeCastro adds, “Nowadays with robotic prostatectomies, the side effects are not as bad as they have been in the past. We are seeing quicker recoveries with much better results today. It is extremely important to get your PSA checked yearly.” Erectile Dysfunction (ED) Up to 50 percent of guys in their 40s will have some degree of sexual dysfunction. “That’s a huge number,” says Dr. DeCastro. “With each decade you see that number go up. By the time men are in their 70s and 80s, seventy percent may be showing symptoms. Because people are living longer, this is more of an issue for many men. “We have several options to help men with ED that are not just limited to medication,” Dr. DeCastro says. Low Testosterone Low testosterone can happen at any age, but is more common as men get older. It is sometimes hard to diagnose as the symptoms are fairly non-specific and men think of them as just a normal part of aging. Symptoms include ED, fatigue, decreased sex drive, and decreased performance at the gym. “A lot of men say they just don’t feel like they have the drive to do things they normally do.
The good news is that Low T is extremely treatable with Testosterone Replacement Therapy,” advises Dr. DeCastro. Enlarged prostate (BPH) Enlarged prostate is a common condition as men get older, and usually has urinary symptoms such as slow stream, frequency, and night-time urination. There are different ways to treat an enlarged prostate including medication and/or other procedures. Many men suffer silently for decades with bothersome urinary symptoms. Testicular Cancer Testicular cancer is the number one cancer in men ages 20-40. It has a 97 percent cure rate if caught early but is much more difficult to treat in later stages. Men should be doing monthly self exams. Ideally, says Dr. DeCastro, “Men should be taught how to do a self examination monthly in middle school health class.” To learn more about these urologic conditions and more, we encourage you to watch Dr. DeCastro’s video lecture series on the Fauquier Health YouTube channel. You can also visit FHDoctors.org/find-a-provider/brian-decastro.

HAVE A ROADMAP IN PLACE. Know where you’d like to go, and implement steps to get there. My approach is principle based: avoid credit card debt and save first. CINDY GOFF, DREAMSPEED PHOTOGRAPHY
HAVE A FINANCIAL TEAM. I recommend that most people have a CPA, a certified financial planner/financial advisor, and an estate attorney. They will be able to guide you and offer advice based on your needs and circumstances. They are experts in their respective professions and their advice can be invaluable and time saving. As your income and estate grows, it becomes even more important.
SAVE FIRST
Building A Strong Financial Foundation Principles of a veteran CPA and a financial literacy instructor
C
indy Legg, a CPA for 22 years (now retired from public accounting), has always been interested in finance and helping people build a strong financial foundation. During her years helping people with their taxes, finances, businesses, and trusts she has seen a few problems and successes which has helped her develop some core principles for developing a successful financial plan for achieving financial goals. “Having a financial plan in place will help you reduce risks and grow your assets over the long term,” she says. One of the things she saw regularly over the years was that the wealthy people didn’t necessarily make a lot of money, and the people who made a lot of money weren’t necessarily wealthy. “I believe that it also has a lot to do with your mindset and the way you live. What I’ve seen is that often people who become wealthy and achieve financial peace are dedicated to living frugally from a long term perspective. They enjoy life fully, but they don’t carry credit card debt, they drive modest cars, and live in more modest homes. This enables them to use their money wisely to invest and save for things like retirement or children’s education,” she explains. Here are a few principles Cindy has developed over the years

As a Christian, I believe in tithing 10 percent off the top, giving that back to God first. But after the tithe, save first. Determine the needs that you want to save for and put as much as you can toward these goals. Saving is addicting. You’re going to see your money grow. You’re going to get excited and want to save more.
DEVELOP A HABIT OF AVOIDING DEBT. I have never believed in credit card debt. If you carry a balance on your credit card, you are basically leveraging your future income to pay for something today. It is a very bad habit to develop and can lead to a very challenging financial future. When you carry debt on a credit card, you are paying an outrageous interest rate that can cause you to “pay” many times more than the original cost of an item. But, no need to worry if you have debt because you can fix this. If you have debt, I highly recommend taking Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University program. His debt snowball method of debt reduction offers clear steps that guide you in paying if off.
HAVE A BUDGET AND HOLD YOURSELF ACCOUNTABLE. Sounds very simple, but it’s important to know your cash flow: income less your expenses each month. Having a budget can help you plan for the unexpected, it can help you save for emergencies, vacations, children’s education, retirement and your future. It helps you plan for the future and stay out of financial trouble. It’s best to prepare a budget with a spouse so you’re both agreeing on it (one of Dave Ramsey’s principles). It will help you see unnecessary expenses that you pay each month and places where you can look to trim expenses and use that money elsewhere.
Financial Literacy Classes Cindy’s passion for helping people with their finances led her to start teaching Dave Ramsey’s Financial Peace University Program through her church, which are financial literacy courses based on the Dave Ramsey Program. His principles greatly align with her own, but he takes them much deeper. She explains, “What I like about the Dave Ramsey Program is that he has a clear order of steps to take, and people often need structure, especially those with financial challenges.” She recommends the financial literacy course to everyone, especially younger people. “If they can start out on the right track right when they start earning a living they can avoid making common mistakes,” she says. “But people of all ages will benefit from financial literacy classes. There’s always something to learn,” she says. Cindy plans to teach the Dave Ramsey program again this fall.

For married couples, try to keep your expenses low enough so you can live on one income. I may be aging myself here as I know that can be a stretch. But, there are many benefits to doing this but one of the biggest is to avoid a financial crisis should one person lose their job. It will also allow you the opportunity to be smart with the other income: saving for retirement, children’s education, and investing for the future. But there is a secondary benefit-a more joyful lifestyle and more time with family etc. This will take sacrifice in the short term, but will pay off dividends in the long term. The same principle of spending less than you make applies if you are single. Remember, save save save and give give give. Truly, blessing others will give you much joy.
START SAVING FOR RETIREMENT AS EARLY AS POSSIBLE. This is when it helps to have a CPA, a certified financial planner, and a certified financial advisor to help you optimize your tax situation and future savings potential. The value of compound growth over time is irreplaceable. If your employer has a retirement plan, you’ll want to contribute enough to maximize the employer contribution. Investing is addicting. You’re going to see your money grow over time. The more you invest, the more the money compounds and increases exponentially. You’re going to get excited and want to put more money in. It snowballs. The earlier you start investing in the future the more you will be able to save.

Saving is the Priority Kyle Steele’s From Paycheck to Pension, step by step financial guidance for public-sector employees. BY PAM KAMPHUIS
“A
t first my co-workers at the fire department teased me,” said Kyle Steele, certified funds specialist and author of From Paycheck to Pension, step by step financial guidance for the public sector. During their breaks, the other firefighters used to watch sports or the news, but Kyle watched CNBC, one of the financial channels. “They laughed because I would watch these numbers scrolling by on the screen for hours,” he said. Kyle says, “I’ve always been interested in finances. When I was fourteen I asked for stocks for Christmas. With my first retirement plan, I was like a kid in a candy store. There were all these online calculators telling me how many hundreds of thousands the account could grow into. At first, I was inexperienced. I would watch TV and pretty much buy any random stock that came across that looked good. I was like a puppy, easily distracted, without a real plan in place. I really didn’t understand the power of investing. But I do remember putting a big chunk of my money into my retirement account, and the township administrator came back to me and asked me if I really wanted to contribute $150 per paycheck when I was only making $9 an hour. And I said ‘YES!’” His fascination for investing became a passion for saving, for putting everything he could into the stock market so its value would grow. Saving has to be the priority, he explains. “I just stayed frugal, lived with grandma, or with my frat brothers, or crashed

Kyle, a soon to be retired professional firefighter with the Prince William Fire Department, lives with his wife Erin, an RN and manager of the CATH lab at Fauquier Health, and their newborn daughter Olivia in Old Town Warrenton. Moving here in 2017, Kyle says they were drawn to the charm and older houses of Warrenton. “We love being able to walk to Main Street for the restaurants, and because we have no HOA, we can have chickens. with friends so I didn’t have to pay rent. I challenged myself to go a year without buying clothing. And I did. How many clothes do I really need, anyway? I put that money in the stock market.” He learned from scratch, with a lot of research, trial and error, and then formal education by studying financial planning at Boston University. “After a while, people began to respect my knowledge. My co-workers wanted advice, to pay me to help them, but I’m not a certified financial planner, so I wasn’t getting into that. But I did want to somehow help people with everything I had learned. I asked myself, ‘How can I help the most people?’ And the answer was a book. The concept behind it is

‘I did it and you can too.’” The book, written informally with dialogue, does not give financial or investment advice. Kyle says, “I’m not telling people where to put their money. I’m not teaching people to trade stocks. I didn’t want this book to come off like I know everything, which I don’t. I did a lot of research and consulted experts and financial planners, but the book is a little autobiographical, written mostly from my experiences.” Kyle continued, “The book begins with things that are very general that everyone should know: it addresses spending habits, mindset, buying a car, a house. Everyone can benefit from that. So, a big chunk of the book applies to everyone. But I was also writing with people who work in professions with a pension, like firefighters, law enforcement and teachers in mind, so there are several chapters dedicated to that sector specifically.” These professionals have some unique opportunities in saving for retirement. Kyle believes it’s crucial for those in those industries to understand the difference between a pension and a retirement fund,
two very different things. “A pension is a paycheck, only you don’t work. It’s calculated by a formula that is based on the number of years you have worked and gives you a percentage of that every month,” he explains. “It’s exactly that; it won’t grow over time, it is not a retirement fund.” “Well,” Frank says, “what exactly is a pension then?” Adam clears his throat, ensuring that he will speak clearly. “A pension is nothing more than a paycheck.” He continues slowly, “And you collect this paycheck in retirement for the rest of your life.” “Really?” Charlie blurts, surprising even himself. “Really,” Adam confirms. “It’s a wonderful benefit that offsets our lower, blue-collar salary.” “A paycheck,” Frank says, “for the rest of my life. So, in retirement…” “Yes,” Adam says, cutting Frank off, “a paycheck without going to work.” “The 457 (similar to a 401K), on the other hand, is the exact opposite. It is a
retirement fund. For one, it is tax-sheltered. In a 457, you pick your mutual funds and your account will grow over time. The really important thing to remember is that the more you put in it, the more it will grow by earning interest. It’s called compounding. It just continues to multiply. It truly amazes people the way that works.” Kyles says, A lot of firefighters say to me, ‘I don’t have enough money to invest.’ I tell them, ‘Try the lunch challenge: if you pack your lunch you’re going to save $5 a day. Put that $5 into your investments, and over time, if you work 10 shifts a month and invest it at an eight percent return, that turns into over $45,000 over about 25 years.” “Money and investing can be confusing and stressful to think about and I hear that and see that from my co-workers. And sometimes just a little bit of information can tweak someone’s course and make an enormous difference. I hope, with this book, I can do that for some.”

Outstanding Graduates FAUQUIER COUNTY CLASS OF 2021
M
ay is graduation month, and June is the issue where we celebrate our local graduates in Warrenton Lifestyle. As we all know, this school year has been probably the most difficult in the history of education. We wanted to highlight one senior from each high school, and asked the principals to recommend a student. Sam Cox of Liberty High School, Kraig Kelican of Fauquier High School, and Megan Brill of Kettle Run High School had a tough time deciding, but then recommended Madison White, Samuel Rodman, and James Diehl. We asked them some questions about growing up and going to school in Fauquier County, as well as their future plans. One thing that shines out is their affection for their teachers, their community, and their love of sports. Thank you to all the teachers and staff of Fauquier County Public Schools for their efforts in maintaining normalcy over the 2020-2021 school year, and please enjoy getting to know Maddie, Sam, and JT. We applaud their hard work in excelling during this most challenging year and recognize the efforts of all FCPS students.
James “J.T.” Diehl FAUQUIER HIGH SCHOOL Tell us a little about yourself.
I have lived my whole life in Warrenton. I have two older brothers and two older sisters who all graduated from Fauquier High School. My oldest brother Garrett, class of 2011, was the FHS starting quarterback for two years while my other brother Colin, class of 2013, was the starting quarterback for two years as well. Both went to play college football. My older sister Megan, class of 2015, was varsity Field Hockey captain and played in college. My older sister Caroline, class of 2018, was also captain of the varsity Field Hockey team. I have been playing varsity quarterback for three years. My hobbies are snowboarding, golf, and fishing. I have been involved with my school's student government as class president during my sophomore and junior years. This year, I am the student government president. I also enjoy travelling. My mom is a flight attendant and she has taken me on trips to London, Rome, Munich, Paris, and Dublin. What does living/having gone to school in Fauquier County mean to you?
My family moved from Fairfax to Fauquier County to enjoy small town living. Having a relationship with the school's faculty is very important to me. If I had attended a school in Fairfax I would have been 1 student out of 600 students in my class. Living there my teachers would have barely been able to get to know me. Here at Fauquier I am 1 student out of 340 students. While having a significantly lower number of students I am able to meet my teachers and get to know them more. I have been playing organized football since I was six. I

was an FYF Colt for many years and had the best coach ever, Coach Joel Gohlman. Having many different outdoor parks and lakes has made an impact on me tremendously. I enjoy being able to meet up with my friends and going fishing and kayaking. What was your favorite subject in High School? Favorite teachers/ coaches? Why?
My favorite subject at school is government. My mom wants me to say that but I enjoy the weightlifting class. I was very involved in the recent U.S. presidential election because I turned 18 years old and was able to vote. Already being interested in government I knew I would enjoy the class. My teacher Mr. Smith is very unbiased and takes everyone’s political opinions into consideration. Having access to the weightlifting class really teaches me skills that I will use throughout my life to keep in shape.
Madison White KETTLE RUN HIGH SCHOOL Tell us a little about yourself.
I have lived in Warrenton for six years with my mom, dad, sister, and two dogs. In school, I was Student Council Class Secretary for three years and I am currently Student Council Senior Class President. While this year has been hard to organize events with COVID-19, we have managed to put on a senior sunrise and “homecoming” spirit week. I have played both lacrosse and field hockey since freshman year, and serving as captain in both sports as a junior and senior. I enjoy being a captain because it allows me to support the girls and act like an older sister to them. I am also a member of Kettle Run’s Morgan’s Message, which is a club that works to eliminate the stigma surrounding mental health within the student-athlete community. I am also a member of the National Honors Society and National Latin Honors Society. What does living/having gone to school in Fauquier County mean to you?
For the past year and a half I have worked at Walmart and that has given me an opportunity to save money for college. Even with the pandemic I have found a way to stay safe and still work to the best of my abilities. I learned that calling out/not showing up for work makes everybody’s workload harder.
Moving from Prince William County to Fauquier County in 6th grade was a huge change for me. Living in Fauquier County meant smaller classes. Not only does it mean I can establish better relationships with my teachers, but also my administrators and superintendent through participating in the Student Advisory club. A few of my fellow classmates and I meet monthly with our superintendent, Dr. Jeck, to suggest improvements within our school. It makes me feel like I have a voice in our county’s education system. While I enjoy going to school in Fauquier county, I also love living here. I love that I live halfway between the town of Warrenton and Gainesville, so I have variety in the restaurants or stores I go to. I also feel very safe living in Fauquier County. I love that it has a rural feel, but it’s a short drive into the city.
What are your plans now for the future?
What was your favorite subject in High School? Favorite teachers/coaches? Why?
Did you work part-time while you were in high school? Where? Did you learn anything?
I plan on attending Hampden-Sydney College and playing football there. I am currently undecided but would consider majoring in political science. My dad is a retired FBI agent. He is very successful and has started his own handyman business. I can see myself following in his footsteps and working for the government.

My favorite subject in high school was definitely English. I have always found myself drawn to writing. My favorite teacher was my chemistry teacher, Ms. Wendlberger, aka Wendl. I loved Wendl because she genuinely cared that her students learned the material and about their well-being. She pushed us to go above and beyond in the classroom. Her class was one of my hardest at Kettle Run, but also one of my favorites. My favorite coach was my field hockey coach, Coach Todd. The summer before Junior year,

I was really struggling with my anxiety. I was ready to quit field hockey before it even started because I was so worried about my workload and commitments. Coach Todd made me feel like it was okay to feel the way I was feeling and told me I could accomplish anything I wished. After Coach Todd’s motivation, I had my best season of field hockey- I received the titles of First Team All-Northwestern District and Second Team All-Region and was happier than I ever thought possible. I have been very lucky to be surrounded by Kettle Run’s amazing staff. Did you work part-time while you were in high school? Where? What was that like-did you learn anything?
I did not have a part-time job in high school because of my commitment to sports, school, and clubs. In the summers, I am a nanny for three girls in my neighborhood. We have a lot of fun together and I have learned how to be more creative. I want the girls to remember their summer as a summer of memories, rather than the summer they got to play on their tablets. What are your plans now for the future? If college or trade school, what would you like to study? Career aspirations?
The college decision process has been really crazy for me. I toured at least 15 schools and applied to over 20. I have finally made the decision to attend the University of Tampa’s Honors College to study marketing. I am not set on a particular career path, but I would love to pursue a career as a Marketing Manager.

Samuel Rodman LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL Tell us a little about yourself
I’ve lived in Bealeton for 14 years with my four younger siblings, my parents, and my dog, Tessa. Growing up, I played a lot of sports: basketball, flag football, lacrosse, soccer, and, of course, running. Throughout high school, I’ve run cross country and track, played cello in the school orchestra, attended Mountain Vista Governor’s School, and have recently co-founded the Black Student Union at Liberty. What does living/having gone to school in Fauquier County mean to you?
Living in Fauquier has been an interesting experience. Neither of my parents are from here, my mom is from Ohio and my Dad is from North Carolina, so we don’t have any family near here. Growing up, I always imagined myself leaving, living in a big city, and never looking back, but as I’ve gotten older, Fauquier has become home. I’ve definitely learned to appreciate the charm and beauty of living in a rural, historic area. Going to school here has also been great. I have made a lot of lasting memories and friendships as a student, and I am forever grateful for the teachers and opportunities that have taken me this far, but also hope that I’ve made a lasting impact as well. What was your favorite subject in High School? Favorite teachers/coaches?
My favorite subject has always been social studies. My Economics and U.S. Government teacher, Mrs. Dee Thompson, through encouraging my ventures in and out of the classroom, has played a major role in my wanting to pursue a career in law. My U.S. History teacher, Mrs. DeChristopher, has as well. I am especially grateful for her dedication in stepping up to bring a much needed AfricanAmerican History course to Liberty. Coach Quynh Nguyen has been my biggest cheerleader when it comes to running, and Coach Helene Leigh has been there since my freshman year to help along my running journey. Most of all, my mom, Coach Andrea Rodman, is, of course, to thank for my athletic success, but also for the lessons that I’ve learned and will take with me for the rest of my life. Did you work part-time while you were in high school? Where? Did you learn anything?
During the summers before my freshman and sophomore years, I worked as a teacher’s assistant for Fauquier’s StarTalk language program. I attended the program as an elementary and middle schooler to learn the Turkish language and culture. StarTalk was an amazing part of my childhood summers, and to this day I still have a love and curiosity for learning new languages and cultures. This past summer, I worked briefly at Great Harvest Bread Company which was a very fun experience. It was my first customer service job which was interesting to say the least. What are your plans for the future?
I am currently committed to run track and field at Princeton University in the fall. I am beyond excited to meet new people, compete, and obviously, grow academically. I plan on studying at the Princeton School of Public and International Affairs and possibly get a certificate in sociology or psychology. After undergrad, I want to attend law school and become a lawyer. Overall, I want to have a career in which I can serve underprivileged communities to the fullest, and I believe a career in law and politics will do just that.

The Road to Lavender Bliss Ana Thomas’s Lavender Bliss Cottage thrives in Delaplane BY PAM KAMPHUIS
I
t’s hard to find someone more enthusiastic about anything, or as busy, or as knowledgeable, even though she insists she doesn’t know much and has so much to learn, as Ana Thomas of Lavender Bliss Cottage, one of the few lavender farms in Fauquier County. Bubbly and outgoing, Ana said, “There’s just not enough time in the day to tell you all I want to explain about my lavender.” Due to Ana’s passion for nature, she and her husband Jerry escaped city life and moved to their dream farm in Delaplane in 2018, and set about deciding what to grow on it. Originally from the wine region of the Country of Georgia, Ana’s plans originally didn’t include lavender. She wanted grapes, for wine, as her father had in Georgia while she was growing up. “But then I started researching and learning that I would need to dig a well, put up a deer fence, and everything else which amounted to so much work and money. And my husband had just had an ankle injury. So I thought, “Why don’t I start with something I can do without digging a well, and then slowly switch to the grapes in time?” That’s when I decided on lavender. I called our small farm Lavender Bliss Cottage because it reflects my love of lavender and a quaint country setting.” Ana, whose first bachelor’s degrees are in botany and chemistry, dove into the world of lavender, teaching herself from books and experimenting as she went along. “In the spring of 2019, my husband Jerry, with his injured ankle, and my son and I, the three of us planted about 89 experimental lavender

Lavender really keeps me sane. It was a hard winter, with COVID-19 and my husband’s recovery. I read my books and thought about my future dreams, and it really saved me. I see my lavender growing and flourishing this spring and it really boosts my spirits. I love my lavender.” plants. Each lavender plant takes at least 10-15 minutes on your knees to plant. This year, we’re going to have over 300 organically grown lavender plants all planted this way. We treat them like babies.” Ana, a full time OR nurse at Fair Oaks Hospital, is the main force behind Lavender Bliss Cottage, and there is more to it than just growing the plants. She is passionate about producing quality lavender products to her own exacting standards. “My husband is my right hand man, But I’m the one who makes all the products and designs. Who can help me? I really can’t trust anybody, honestly. Someone asked me once, ‘Why don’t you train somebody?’ I decided I’d rather do high quality products myself. I’m not in a rush. I don’t want to be a millionaire. I’m just going to sell small amounts of very high end products and I’m happy with it,” she explained. Ana’s website has a wealth of her hand-made lavender-based products, including bouquets, wreaths, soaps, skin care products, and culinary products available for ordering.
Cooking
Cooking with lavender may seem unique to some people, but Ana loves to experiment. “It’s addicting,” she says. She makes concentrated lavender simple syrup, which she uses in recipes for cookies and in drinks like lemonade and cocktails. Although Ana’s favorite cocktail is her lavender syrup with cranberry juice and vodka, she says it can really be used with any cocktail that is
Growing Lavender In some ways, Virginia is not the best location to grow lavender. The only varieties that will thrive are cold-resistant, humidity-resistant and rain-resistant plants. It also likes good drainage which is a challenge with our clay-like soil. So Ana has chosen her nine varieties carefully to thrive in our climate, and has implemented French drains to improve drainage. On the positive side, lavender doesn’t need much fertilization, is very disease- and pest-resistant, and plays an important role in bee pollination.
Lavender Varieties There are over 450 varieties of lavender, classified as either English lavender (or true lavender) or French lavender (lavandins). As a rule, English lavender is best for culinary uses because the varieties are milder in taste and used in herb blends for savory dishes, in drinks like lavender lemonade, and things like lavender infused honey, ice cream, and syrups. French lavender tastes bitter, so it is best used for infused oils and essential oils for candle making, aromatherapy, and skin care products.
not milk or cream based. “I got the syrup idea when I was baking cookies. I didn’t have lavender sugar for the recipe, so I made the syrup. The final product was amazing. These cookies are absolutely delicious, with a distinct aroma and interesting aftertaste. My husband is the cookie monster, and he loves those cookies, even better than chocolate chip.”
Crafting
Crafting may be what comes most often to mind when thinking of the uses of lavender, and it is part of Lavender Bliss Cottage’s wares. “Lavender wreath making is one of my favorite seasonal activities. I love to create unique lavender bouquets and also combine lavender with other dried flowers to create seasonal bouquets. Lavender dries easily, and if it is dried correctly, it keeps its scent and color for a long time. I use fresh or dried lavender flowers and buds in crafts and like to combine the beauty of

English lavender and the stunning scent and elegance of French lavender.”
Handmade Oils
Ana makes her own infused lavender oils, and hopes next year to expand to essential oils. “Lavender infused oils are pretty easy to make,” she says. “You just need patience because it requires a couple of months to make. But the end result is amazing, it smells delightful. I make it in the summertime using a folk method. It’s good for massaging and skin care products.” Growth and future dreams motivate Ana. As well as expanding the amount of lavender she grows, she wants to improve her indoor
work space where she crafts and welcomes visitors. “I don’t want to go too fast and drive my husband crazy, but I want to add a cute workshop in the garage, and there won’t be any cars in there. I also want to buy a big beautiful apothecary cabinet where I can have my products and my books. Then I’ll have my own workshop and I'm excited about it.” “Lavender really keeps me sane. It was a hard winter, with COVID-19 and my husband’s recovery. I read my books and thought about my future dreams, and it really saved me. I see my lavender growing and flourishing this spring and it really boosts my spirits. I love my lavender.”
Lavender Bliss Cottage Open for farm visits during peak blooming time: June 5 - mid-July. Workshops running through the end of August. 3980 Cobbler Mountain Road, Delaplane 703-899-9173 Lavenderblisscottage.com FB: @lavenderblisscottage Meet Ana on Sundays at Archwood Green Barns Farmers Market in The Plains.
Farm visits This year, Ana is excited to open her farm to the public, but the experience is much more than a “pick your own.” “It’s more
like “pick and make,” she explains enthusiastically. “I love to teach, and I want to teach people from step one to the final product. That’s the fun of it. I don’t just turn people loose all over the place with scissors, because they need guidance. I’m going to tell them all about growing lavender and teach them to cut properly, and then teach them how to make bouquets or wreaths or sachets that they can take home with them.” Also included in the farm visits are tastes of her lavender cookies and tips in using dried lavender in cooking and baking. Ana says, “I’m really looking forward to having people out to the farm to share my passion for lavender, to teach them how to grow it and care for it, and then make crafts. I’m also going to share tips on how to use dried lavender in cooking, baking, and creating unique lavender drinks.”

n the list of “things to do for Father’s Day,” relaxing at a brewery has got to be either at, or near, the top. And with so many terrific brewpubs right in our backyard, the choices are practically endless. We’ve included 17 of them here, and all have received stellar reviews. Who reviewed them? You did! For some of the folks who responded to our informal Q&A on Facebook, Old Bust Head Brewing is the place to be. For others, it would be a fate worse than death to miss the beverages at Death Ridge Brewery. Where possible we have included the special events and activities each brewery has planned for Father’s Day. For those without information, please check the events section of each brewery’s Facebook page as the holiday gets closer. Happy Father’s Day!

rea music fans rejoice – between warmer weather and wider vaccine distribution, it won’t be long before your favorite venue, winery, or brewery returns to running a full schedule of live music. Most of us are ready to get out this time of year generally, and with the circumstances of 2020 keeping many at home, that restlessness to get back to a typical summer of music, festivals, and events is stronger than ever. Many establishments began booking entertainment in May, including Warrenton’s Denim and Pearls restaurant, which stages live music on Main Street during Friday and Saturday night street closures. Because Fauquier County was not officially considered Northern Virginia during the shutdowns, Warrenton was able to open up by closing streets to traffic, which allowed for outdoor seating along Main Street. “Prior to COVID we had music in our cellar bar area,” said Denim and Pearls owner Jenn Robinson. “Thanks to the Roll Out Warrenton program by the town council and staff, we were able to take our music outside. We are so appreciative that the town thought outside the box and figured out how to make it work long before the rest of the region.” Research showed that residents and visitors loved the changes and participated, helping Main Street businesses to thrive during a rocky time. Jenn, who is also on the board of Experience Old Town Warrenton, with responsibilities including Restaurant Week, books the music with her patrons and also fellow establishments in mind. “Molly’s, Deja Brew, Black Bear and more – we are all located close together so everyone can enjoy the music.” Fountains,

Elizabeth Lawrence Band, Bart Harris (from JunkFood), Bailey Hayes, and the Erick Messick Band are local faves that play the patio. Jean Gehlsen’s Cedar Run Brewery in Nokesville had just begun to hit its stride when the virus hit. “We’ll be two this month, so when the restrictions were put in place last year it caused a slower opening for us. However, we put strict cleaning procedures into place, and we picked up a lot of new customers that were drawn to that,” Jean said. “We enclosed our patio and added heaters, giving people space and the feeling of being outside. We were able to book music throughout the year because of those moves.” Cedar Run features live music Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays. Regional favorites like Low Water Bridge, Brisk, Front Porch Rockers, Trey Schneider, and Scarlette Awakening are the staples. “We have a mix of some country, bluegrass, rockers like Brisk who play ’90s music, and Front Porch Rockers who play music everyone sings to,” said Jean. “I have a lot of solo acoustic and duets on Saturday and Sunday – with Sunday staying low key so people can chill and get ready for the week.” While there are special events and dates that are totally family-friendly, Cedar Run welcomes only infants and kids ages 15 and up for safety reasons. “We have an award-winning brewer and food trucks all weekend in addition to the music – we are a great destination to kick back and enjoy!” Former engineer and current brewer Matt

Rose and his wife Ashley opened Barking Rose Brewing Company + Farm in October 2019, and while their plans were thwarted for last summer, they are gearing up for the upcoming months now. “We want to do all the stuff we couldn’t do last year, like music on Fridays and Sundays, Wednesday trivia, corn hole tournaments, yoga every other Sunday, and beer dinners in the hops yard with pairings and music,” Matt said. “We plan to build some outside pavilions, and we feature the excellent El Jafe street tacos via their food truck.” Matt sees the regional wineries and breweries not as competitors but as a community. “We all want to succeed; we want you to come out, have a beer or glass of wine, and relax!”

Death Ridge Brewery in Jeffersonton books music most Thursdays and Fridays, with bigger bands on Saturdays and its popular “Brunch and Bluegrass” on Sundays. “Most of our growth with regards to music has been grass roots,” said the brewery’s Zack Turner. “We started by finding a few bands locally, and now promoters and musicians reach out to us daily. With COVID, we kept most of the big bands outside under a tent to spread people out.” Zack shared that it's hard to tell what normal is for Death Ridge since they opened during the pandemic. “But, every time we have live music, we get a great crowd, and it seems to be increasing as things get back to normal. Plus, we can do more outside now that the weather is breaking and getting nicer.”
front, our newest offerings on tap, and all of the cool things we have planned for the summer,” said Dan Barrett. Old Bust Head offered live music throughout the winter and early Spring months indoors with COVID precautions, and as the weather warmed they moved back outside. “We’re excited to have Form of Expression, Maddi Mae with Wine Thief, Annie Stokes, Karen Jonas, The Thistle Brothers, Randy Thompson, and many other excellent local musicians bring their music back to us this summer!” As you head out in search of relaxation, fun, good scenery, food, and of course music, stay informed by following your favorite haunts on social media. Music and food truck schedules are usually shared that way, making it easy to make plans. Almost all regional wineries and breweries feature live music on weekends as well. Check the calendars, head out to support your regional businesses, and enjoy some live music this summer!

hen you hear the name Doug Lees in Warrenton, the first thing you think of is, what a great guy. The second thing that comes to mind is his award-winning widely-published steeplechase photos. But Doug has another love: fly fishing. He says, “I’ve been fishing since I was a kid. My first time, my father took me fishing on the Rappahannock with a fly rod, but I didn’t catch anything. We were fishing against my cousins that day, and they got all the fish.” Then, a fortuitous meeting occurred. He went to work at the Piedmont Virginian (a previous incarnation of our current magazine) in 1972, and met Harrison O’Connor, an author and an expert fly fisherman from Upperville. “Harrison guided me and really got me fishing. He helped me use some of my grandfather’s bamboo fly

rods from the 1940s which I had inherited. He taught me to cast, which is the hardest thing, and I actually started catching fish.” “I’ve been lucky to meet people who have really helped me. I think that’s the key. Without that mentorship from Harrison, and Marcia Woolman in The Plains, another fly fishing expert, I would have struck out.” And as usual, Doug always had his camera with him. His photography became a big part of his adventures on the river. “Harrison was a big deal, and he wrote a lot of articles for big fishing magazines. I started taking photos for him for some of his articles. Way back then, I was using a Minolta with a 55 ml lens. By 1978, Harrison was nationally known and writing for Sports Afield. They paid a lot of money for photos, so that was really good for me.” Then Doug met Anne Macintosh, another author writing fly fishing books who used some of his photos. And then John Ross, author of 100 Best Trout Fishing Streams, who also used Doug as a photographer. Doug has fished all over, from locally to Pennsylvania and Maryland, and abroad in Canada, England, and Argentina. While he doesn’t consider himself an expert, he does do some informal guiding on fishing trips for friends. These days he primarily fishes in central Pennsylvania, while taking quick trips to Shenandoah National Park in between bigger trips. “There I can be on the river in 40 minutes,” he explains. And even when he doesn’t catch a lot of fish, he still loves to go for the photography. “The scenery is incredible, and the fish are beautiful,” he says.
Discover the Best Trout Streams in Shenandoah National Park
There are about twentytwo terrific trout streams in the park and author Harry W. Murray of Edinburg, Virginia has written a comprehensive guide to all of them. His book, Trout Fishing in the Shenandoah National Park, is considered a “must read” for Virginia trout fishermen. Available on Amazon.

oleslaw and potato salad. Hot dogs and hamburgers. And watermelon. Got to have watermelon. These are the “must haves” of every Fourth of July cookout. But what if you could spiff up your menu a bit? Add some unexpected twists? What about planked salmon? Homemade baked beans (forget the cans!)? A vegan entree? Unique drinks? I’ve imagined a super cookout menu that will bowl over your friends and family. There’s not enough room for all the recipes I’d like to include, but here are some!

A super successful way to grill fish is on a piece of food-safe wood more correctly referred to as a plank in cooking circles. Yes, really! The plank acts as a barrier to prevent the fish from sticking to the grill and keeps the cooked fish from falling apart as you remove it for serving. As a bonus, you serve the fish right from the plank which makes you look like you’ve been to a fancy cooking school even if you haven’t. Planks are available at upscale grocery stores and wherever grilling gear is sold. SERVES 4 TO 6
INGREDIENTS 1 whole fresh or thawed salmon filet (about 2 ½ lbs.) 1 grilling plank to fit the length of your salmon filet 1 fresh cucumber 2 Tablespoons white balsamic vinegar

DIRECTIONS Prepare the plank by soaking it in cool tap water for 30 minutes before cooking. Drain and shake off excess water. While the plank is soaking, peel the cucumber. Seed, if desired. Chop finely. Toss with balsamic vinegar. Refrigerate until serving time. When ready to cook, put the salmon, skin side down, onto the soaked (ungreased) plank. Coat filet with cooking spray or brush with oil. Place on the grill. Loosely drape a piece of foil (dull side up) over the filet. Close grill. Cook to desired doneness – about 25 minutes according to thickness of the filet or until it flakes easily. Remove filet from the grill, leaving it on the plank for serving. Sprinkle over the filet to taste with spice blend. Spoon cucumbers down the center of the filet. Sprinkle with additional spice blend to garnish. Serve hot or at room temperature.
Smoky Vegan Dogs
Virginia Baked Beans
With today’s dietary preferences, it’s a nice touch to add a few unexpected yummies to keep those who prefer other dining options from going hungry. These vegan dogs (actually carrots!) are surprisingly good and plenty satisfying served in a bun with regular hot dog fixings. * marinate at least 24 hours
Too much trouble to make baked beans from scratch? Not these! Light years away from doctored canned beans. These are the real deal.
MAKES 4 DOGS
INGREDIENTS 4 carrots (similar in thickness to hot dogs) For the marinade ¼ cup apple cider vinegar 1 cup vegetable broth 2 Tbsp soy sauce ½ tsp onion powder ½ tsp garlic powder 2 tsp smoky paprika 1 ½ tsp liquid smoke 2 tsp dry mustard 1 ½ tsp dried, ground coriander 1/8 tsp ground cloves 2 Tbsp maple syrup DIRECTIONS Peel carrots. Leave whole but trim to resemble hot dogs in shape and length. Put carrots into a medium pot. Add water to cover about 1 inch above carrots. Bring to a boil on high. Reduce heat and simmer (uncovered) till fork tender, 20 to 30 minutes depending on the thickness of the carrots. Meanwhile, whisk marinade ingredients together in a heat-safe container that’s large enough to allow cooked carrots to marinate without crushing or crowding. Set aside. When carrots are cooked, drain them and immediately put the hot carrots into the marinade. The marinade must cover carrots. Make additional marinade, if necessary, according to the size of your container. Cool (uncovered) about ½ hour at room temperature then cover and refrigerate carrots in the marinade for at least 24 hour or up to 3 days. At serving time, remove carrots from marinade and shake off excess liquid. Grill to heat, about 5 minutes. Serve in a bun with your favorite hot dog fixings.
SERVES 6 TO 8
INGREDIENTS 1 pound dried butter beans, soaked 18-24 hours, and drained ¼ cup brown sugar 4 Tablespoons butter (1/2 stick) 1 large onion, chopped (about 1 ½ cups) 1 teaspoon salt ¾ teaspoon pepper 1 (10 oz.) bag mini marshmallows EQUIPMENT Pan size: Non-metal casserole measuring 10 inches round X 3 inches deep holding about 8 cups DIRECTIONS The day before cooking, pick over beans and rinse. Put beans into a large bowl and cover them with 12 cups of tap water. Cover bowl and refrigerate 18 to 24 hours. Rinse your soaked beans once more. Put beans into a large pot and cover with 12 cups of fresh water. Bring to a boil on high (uncovered), reduce heat and gently boil till beans are fork tender, about 30 minutes. While beans are cooking, melt butter in a large skillet. Add pepper and onion. Cook on low until onions are soft and transparent, about 5 minutes. Remove from heat. Stir in brown sugar and salt. Preheat oven to 325 degrees with rack in center of oven. Grease the baking casserole or coat with cooking spray. Set aside. When beans are done simmering, remove 2 cups of the cooking liquid and set aside. Drain the rest of the liquid and discard. Stir the cooked onion mixture and the reserved 2 cups of cooking liquid into the hot, drained beans. Pour into the prepared casserole dish, spreading evenly. Cover casserole (foil is OK). Bake in the preheated oven for 30 minutes. Remove the cover. Continue baking, 30 minutes more. Remove beans from the oven and spread the marshmallows evenly over top. Return to the oven and continue baking (uncovered) till marshmallows are gooey, puffy and golden, about 30 minutes more. Serve hot.
Grand Old Flag Cake This classic 4th of July cake has as many variations as it has people who make it. It’s the centerpiece of July 4th celebrations everywhere. This is my simple version. MAKES 1 (9 X 13) CAKE
INGREDIENTS 1 (9 x 13) unfrosted cake (any flavor) 1 (20 to 24 oz.) can strawberry or cherry pie filling 2 (8 oz.) containers non-dairy whipped topping (like Cool Whip) 2 pints fresh strawberries (about 1 pound) 1 pint fresh blueberries (about 1 ½ cups) DIRECTIONS Cut cake from shorter end to shorter end, forming 2 layers. Place bottom layer on serving platter. Spread evenly with pie filling and about half a container of the non-dairy topping. Replace top layer and frost top and sides with remaining non-dairy topping. Arrange blueberries in a rectangle in the upper left corner of the frosted cake to resemble the blue area of our American flag. Use tiny dollops of the white topping to simulate the stars. Arrange strawberries (sliced, chopped or left whole) in rows for the red stripes. Leave a bit of white between rows like the stripes of our flag. Refrigerate cake until serving.
Lemon Balms A lively adult beverage fresh from your herb garden. No lemon balm? Substitute lemon verbena or any mint you happen to have. INGREDIENTS 1 cup fresh lemon balm leaves (no stems) 1 pint vodka Lemonade (purchased or homemade) DIRECTIONS Put leaves into a quart jar. Pour vodka over leaves. Cover jar opening with a double layer of plastic wrap and cap. Gently shake to distribute the vodka. Refrigerate 24 hours. At serving time, pour infused vodka into lemonade to taste. Garnish with lemon slices and sprigs of fresh lemon balm, as desired.

RideFauquier Arena and Trails
R
ideFauquier announces the formal opening of the RideFauquier Arena and Trails. The facility is a new, and very welcomed, Equestrian Park in Fauquier County. It is located out Meetze Road near the Fauquier Education Farm. The facility includes a 150’ x 300’ outdoor riding arena, a huge parking lot for horse trailers, and over five miles of beautiful wooded and maintained meadow trails. Although the primary use of the facility is for equestrian purposes, the trails are also open to the public for recreational purposes. “We see dog walkers, nature hikers, bird watchers and joggers using the trails,” said Jinx Fox, Vice President of RideFauquier. “Right
now, it’s a really underutilized resource in the county, because we haven’t put out a lot of publicity yet. But we hope to see more people coming, and I’d love to see more Girl Scout and Boy Scout activities here. It’s just a perfect place for it.” The genesis of the project was over 10 years ago, born of a conversation between some Fauquier County “horse people,” and the idea received huge interest and enthusiasm from the equestrian community. After signing a Memorandum
of Understanding with the County, the project began in earnest in 2016 under the leadership of founders Karen Corl (President), Mary Page (secretary/ treasurer), Natalie Ortberg, and others. After a significant amount of fundraising, generous donations from local businesses, and grants from the PATH Foundation and the American Quarter Horse Association, the facility opened last spring. While it is located on County land, no County funds were used for the project. The trails are open to the public at no charge, and the equestrian areas are available by a membership fee of $50 per year for an individual and $100 per year for a family. A liability waiver is required. The trails are not open to bicycles, ATVs, or mechanized vehicles, and dogs must be leashed, in part so they don’t startle the horses. RideFauquier would like to invite the public to a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the tremendous accomplishment of opening of the facility. It will be held on June 17 from 5-7 p.m. and will feature food and some equestrian activities. INFORMATION: MARY PAGE (540) 229-7600 WWW.RIDEFAUQUIER.COM
