ast Friday, my husband and I were sitting outside at Molly’s to see an old friend, Elizabeth Lawrence, perform at Denim and Pearls. The weather was absolutely perfect-it was a gorgeous night. We had a large table but were waiting for friends, so another couple asked if they could sit at the other end for a bit. We got to talking, and they were from Pittsburg and couldn’t stop raving about Warrenton. The closed street, the kids playing, the remote control cars, our (mostly) well-behaved golden retriever, the lack of parking meters, the live music, the quaint shops, the history. “We feel like we’ve stumbled back to Mayberry,” they joked. He said, “We were across the street at Denim and Pearls, and a law enforcement officer came in and asked the room, ‘Could whoever owns the black Malibu please move their car because the streets will be closing soon?’ Do you know what your first clue that your car needed to be moved in Pittsburgh would be? A rusty tow truck rumbling by with your car attached.” I love to hear things like this. It makes me very proud to be a part of this town. Our local businesses are an important part of our community, and it’s still time to support them in our Best of Fauquier survey. Voting is open until June 15th. Don’t forget to stop by! va.secondstreetapp.com/ Best-of-Fauquier-2022/, or find the link on fauquiernow.com. Have a wonderful month, and happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there!

Education & Enrichment
Do you start your day with a cup of coffee and a quick look at the newspaper? Skip the costly subscriptions and use ProQuest US Newsstream for access to regional and national newspapers, including the Washington Post, the Wall Street Journal, the New York Times and hundreds more. Access them at fauquierlibrary.org/research/. Dinner and a movie sounds like a fun night – but with movie theater tickets approaching twenty dollars a person (plus the hefty price of a snack and drink), a subscription to Netflix or Disney+ may seem like a bargain. If the cost of all those streaming services is adding up, consider swapping out paid streaming services with free options from the library. Kanopy has over 30,000 movies and videos with options for adults and kids, all ad-free. Access Kanopy from fauquierlibrary.org/digital. Hundreds of movies and popular TV series are also available on DVD – including The Crown, Call the Midwife, Heartland and His Dark Materials - as well as a wide selection of award-winning movies, including recent Oscar nominees and winners. Lieutenant Andrew Arnold STORY AND PHOTO BY JAMES JARVIS
L
ieutenant Andrew Arnold said he remembers one morning while on duty his department received a 911 call in which a local Warrenton man was suffering from a heart attack. Arnold was first to arrive on the scene and found the man in his kitchen collapsed on the floor. Without much time to react, Arnold proceeded to do CPR until the paramedics came. His quick decision helped to save a life. “We were able to bring him back and I still see him and his family around town, and that’s amazing to me,” he said. Arnold, who prefers people call him by his middle name, Scott, said his favorite part about being in local law enforcement is he knows the people personally he protects, and they know him too. Born in Leesburg, Virginia, Arnold said his father worked for the United States Agency for International Development which took his family around the world. When he was a toddler, Arnold and his family moved to Tennessee, and then to Southern Africa when he was seven years old where they stayed for about ten years. “I grew up in a school that was very nature oriented,” Arnold said. “So we did outdoor things all the time… I hiked in the mountains, did whitewater rafting, rugby, cricket, all those things. I've done a little bit of everything.” Eventually, Arnold’s family moved back to Tennessee and Arnold finished high school in the U.S. He then moved back to Northern Virginia at the age of 21 and earned his associates degree from NOVA Community College. Afterward, he went on to earn his bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from George Mason. Arnold was set on going into law enforcement after he graduated from Mason, but unfortunately at the time there were no

jobs, he said. Instead, he found work in telecommunications which is where he stayed for about a decade. But after sitting in a cubicle for a number of years, Arnold was eager to do something different. Something that mattered, and where he could tangibly see the impact he was having. All those years working in the telecommunications industry, the idea of being in law enforcement was never far from Arnold’s thoughts. And by the time he was 35, Arnold decided it was time to finally apply to the police academy. “The idea of being a cop always appealed to me,” Arnold said. “I think the job is exciting, and it was an opportunity to make a difference.” Arnold attended the academy after being hired by the Warrenton Police Department in 2008. Over the years Arnold said there have been many instances where he felt he has made a difference in the people's lives as a police officer. And although in recent years police have come under more scrutiny from the public, he said he has worked hard to change people’s perceptions about law enforcement. “But it's tough to overcome because somebody may have personal experience, they may have a history with law enforcement that hasn't been positive,” Arnold said. “Their first reaction is to think [the police are] going to treat them the same way that maybe they've been treated in the past. It's important to be professional and to have empathy for the citizens that you encounter.” One of the benefits of working in a small town too, Arnold said, is that it's a little
easier to change people’s perceptions of law enforcement when they know who you are. “Our citizens here love us,” he said. “We're respected and we are treated so well here compared to other locations, where there's that engrained distrust or negativity towards law enforcement.” But regardless of what kind of experience you’ve had with law enforcement, at the end of the day, Arnold is like anyone else. He wishes he were better at golf and on weekends Arnold enjoys spending time with his two daughters and biking. “I’m in the process of riding the entire C&O Canal in stages,” he said. And like most people, Arnold wishes he had more time to travel to exotic places, including Italy or Thailand (his favorite places he’s been to). “The thing that blows me away about when I went to Italy… is the roads and bridges and aqueducts that were built before our country was even discovered,” he said. If you see Arnold on the street (or during a traffic stop if you’re unlucky), he said he’d rather do away with the formalities and just have people call him Scott because “part of what policing is about is connecting with people.” w

In Real Estate, It’s “Location, Location, Location.” In Technology, It’s
“Back up, Back up, Back up!” BY KLAUS FUECHSEL
B
ecause it is so easy to take photos with a Smartphone, people are taking and sharing more photos than ever. On my phone, I have 21,000 photos taken over the last 10 years. That is a lot of digital data! In addition, I have almost 4,000 songs, 1,000 videos, and tons of emails and contacts. Unless I upgrade soon to a new iPhone with more built-in memory, I will have to free up some space for data on my phone. But this is a lot of data I can’t afford to lose. I need a backup. In my computer repair business, I have learned that although it is important to fix the hardware, what is often more important is to recover and back up the data. There are so many ways to lose data by accident. We have seen it all. Buying a new computer can compensate for the hardware loss, but what about the data and programs on the old one? What about your photos, documents, files, and contact information? A client recently brought in an external hard drive with 150,000 photos stored on it. He said that a couple of months before, he dropped his computer and had to send the drive to a data recovery company in California. They were able to open it up in a clean-room environment and recover the data. Great! The cost? Ouch. But the client kept on using that new external hard drive with his thousands of recovered files, and one day the hard drive suddenly stopped working. Instead of copying the recovered data onto another external hard drive and storing it away in a safe place when it was recovered the first time, the client seemed to have lost all the data again. Luckily, we were able to recover 99% of the files, after hours of work with special data recovery tools and protocols. With patience and time, we were able to give the client two external hard drives with all of the recovered data. A backup with a backup. Realtors say “location, location, location.” Techies counter with “backup, backup, backup.” If you have only one location where your data is stored, you need a backup! This is especially crucial for data such as QuickBooks or Photoshop files that you change frequently. The Time Machine functionality on Macs has often saved clients from heartbreak when restoring their computer system. On PCs, Windows offers good backup methods. It is worth investing

in a dedicated backup tool that can create a total image of your hard drive, so everything can be restored when necessary, including programs, settings, and data. And there are lots of good “Cloud” backup options, too, including One Drive and Google drive. But whatever backup method you use, remember these tips: Check from time to time that your backup technology is still functioning properly. Never keep your essential account passwords only on your computer. You won’t be able to find them if the computer crashes or is reinstalled. Write them down and store them in a safe place. And print out your encryption or BitLocker key. Remember that even the best mechanical hard drives and solid state drives will someday fail or get too full. It is only a matter of time. And beware of data encryption attacks which might render your data and backups unusable, unless you have a backup not connected to any computer or network. The attack has to be solved and disabled before reconnecting this backup! Back to the beginning of my thoughts on photos. My iPhone uses iCloud to back things up on its own. However, I recently noticed a feature under the “settings / general / phone storage“ option. “Optimize photos” would free up about 90% of my photo storage by transferring the photos to my iCloud account, leaving a copy of each one on my phone, with a lower resolution. This would free up 90% of my photo storage. But before I start this, I will make a full backup of my iPhone onto an external hard drive. Always, before you make substantial changes, restructure, delete, or move data files and folders, make sure you have a full backup on an external hard drive. There is no such thing as too many backups! w

Third Annual American Heroes Ride Poker Run Former Sheriff Bob Mosier with Carmen Rivera at the 2019 Ride at the FCSO; Bikes ready for “kickstands up” at the 2019 Ride
Calling all motorcycle enthusiasts! Come out on Saturday, July 9 to support Fauquier Cops for Children BY PAM KAMPHUIS PHOTOS COURTESY OF THE 2019 AMERICAN HEROES RIDE
I
n 2018, Warrenton State Farm Agent Carmen Rivera and her husband, LTC Felix Rivera U.S. Army Reserve (Ret.), paid a visit to the Fauquier County Sheriff ’s Department. Their goal? To find a way to help, a cause to support. Sgt. Mike Hartman suggested a cause close to FCSO’s heart: Fauquier Cops for Children. As luck would have it, both LTC Rivera and Sgt. Hartman were both Harley motorcycle lovers, and the conversation drifted in the direction of Nam Knights, a motorcycle club Rivera belongs to. And so it evolved: they would fundraise for Fauquier Cops for Children, and the theme would have something to do with motorcycles. So in 2018, the Riveras, with Sgt. Hartman, Commander Claude Davenport of American Legion Post 72 in Warrenton, and Michelle Arft with Fauquier Cops for Children pulled off their first American Heroes Motorcycle Ride. In 2019, about 42 riders/passengers participated with the resulting donation totaling about $2500. Unfortunately, the ride was canceled in 2020 and 2021 due to COVID 19, but the group is enthusiastically ramping up for this year. Ms. Rivera hopes to attract 75 riders/passengers with a goal of $3000 for donations. They can always count on the American Legion Riders as well as the Nam Knights riders and the Blue Knights, a motorcycle club of law enforcement riders, but all motorcycle lovers are invited. This year, the home start/finish post will be Post 72 here in Warrenton by White Springs Senior Living. The

What is a Poker Run? It’s a fun way to contribute to a great cause, get outside in the beautiful countryside and weather, and get involved in your community. Motorcycle riders and passengers ride a local route to participating posts and collect a playing card at each one. Upon returning to the home post, prizes are awarded for highest poker hand, lowest poker hand, and more. Poker Runs are used for fundraising, and entry fees are donated to a designated cause.
day will be coordinated by Post Commander Claude Davenport, American Legion Rider Mike Freeman, Sgt. William Kemper, Lt. Alvaro Moran, Michelle Arft, and the Riveras, with plenty of help from other Post members. “Kickstands Up” is at 9 a.m., and riders then visit American Legion Post 330 in Culpeper, Post 290 in Stafford, Post 10 in Manassas, and then return to Warrenton about 3 hours and 114 miles later where they will be greeted by local vendors and enjoy lunch provided by Post 72. Fauquier Cops for Children Fauquier Cops for Children (FCFC) is organized by volunteers from the law enforcement community to provide assistance and support to the youth of Fauquier County. Made up of sheriff’s deputies, police officers, state troopers, and social workers from the Fauquier Sheriff’s Office, Warrenton Police Department, Virginia State Police, and Fauquier County Department of Social Services, the FCFC Shop-With-A-Cop program’s primary goal is to provide an opportunity for a better Christmas for Fauquier children and teens who have been adversely affected by crime, abuse or other situations which required law enforcement action. These volunteers raise funds through private donations to take children and teens shopping for Christmas. Deputies, officers and troopers take each child or teen shopping at Walmart. They are then treated to breakfast with fun social activities, a visit and photo with Santa and gift wrapping. The day is always a great success providing each child or teen with a meaningful experience with our community’s law enforcement professionals. Past recipients have returned to help out and make this a memorable time.

Fauquier County’s 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration June 18, 11 a.m. - 8 p.m., Main Street, Warrenton
Clockwise from top left: Fauquier’s 2021 Juneteenth celebration had a happy vibe; Fauquier native Kristen Mann of Syracuse discussed her artwork with John Doyle; Local historian Karen Hughes White told the story of Juneteenth; George Jolley cooked hundreds of hamburgers and hot dogs; Town Councilman Renard Carlos welcomed the crowd.

“A
s we are building upon our first-year major success and response from the community from the celebration last year, the Juneteenth Committee looks forward to the event staying true to its roots and working organically with Fauquier County to shed light, provide historical significance, and promote culture,” said Barrie Newman, one of the organizers of the event.
Declared a state and federal holiday in 2021, Juneteenth is the oldest national commemoration of the end of slavery in America. Juneteenth gets its name from a blending of the words “June” and “nineteenth.” The holiday originates in Texas where, on June 19, 1865, U.S. Army troops arrived in Galveston and Gen. Gordon Granger publicly read an executive decree that the more than 250,000 Black people still being held in bondage in Texas were free. This was almost two and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation had gone into effect. Today, the Juneteenth holiday is a time for reflection as well as celebration. There will be plenty of opportunities to do both in Warrenton on June 18. Arts, craft and food vendors will offer their wares along Main Street. Live music, presentations, and contests will take place on stages near Courthouse Square. There will be soul, jazz, and gospel singing. An African dance troupe will perform. Karen White, Director of the Afro-American Historical Association of Fauquier County (AAHA) will speak about the purpose

of Juneteenth and share local history. The Juneteenth committee is accepting contestants for a Mr. & Ms. Juneteenth Pageant, Hair Braiding, Sweet Potato Pie and Rap contests. Cash prizes will be awarded. “We’re excited about this year’s Juneteenth celebration. We look forward to our community celebrating freedom while enjoying the rich culture of the African American experience,” said Dr. T. Tyronne Champion, another Juneteenth committee member. Admission is free. Vendor booths will be open from 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. Folks may want to bring a chair to sit in while enjoying the music, which will continue until 8 p.m. The 2nd Annual Juneteenth Celebration is sponsored by the AAHA, View Tree Lodge #142, Fauquier NAACP and In-A-Bein, with generous support from local businesses. w fauquiercountyjuneteenth@gmail.com | 540-905-5712 facebook.com/profile.php?id=100067411209488 naacpfauquiercounty.org/event-details/2nd-annual-june teenth-celebration

management from the University of Akron. After receiving her degree, she managed the Minnesota Conservancy of the Arts and is joining us after three years as Executive Director of the Albany Symphony Orchestra in Albany, Georgia, and a stint at local favorite Denim & Pearls. While visiting friends, Joelle and her family drove through the area as her young family looked for a place to settle down after years on the road supporting her husband’s military postings. They were immediately taken in by the charm and vibrant nature of Old Town Warrenton. She and her family relocated to Warrenton, Virginia, soon after, where they have put down roots and are active members of the community. In her new role as Executive Director, Joelle is looking forward to learning more about the merchants, business owners, and community members who make Old Town thrive. Her focus is to ensure the continued economic vitality of the town while drawing inspiration from the rich history of the area to create a welcoming atmosphere here in Old Town. After spending time at the National Main Street Conference in May, she is excited to hit the ground running and strengthen the town we love. Introduce yourself to Joelle by reaching out to director@oldtownwarrenton.org or stop by EOTW’s booth on First Fridays. w

A Day for Dads Celebrating those who hold our hands and have our hearts BY SUE BALDANI
“A father is neither an anchor to hold us back, nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.”
A
lthough the author of this quote is unknown, anyone who has or has had a great Dad knows this to be true. Having someone who believes in our dreams, encourages us to reach our goals, and helps us find the right path is invaluable in our lives. Here, a few local men tell us about their most favorite ways to spend Father’s Day, what being a father means to them, or their most memorable Father’s Day. Just like every child is different, so is every Dad. Let’s celebrate them this June 19th!
Zan Dial
EXECUTIVE CHEF AND OWNER OF ELLIE’S PLACE HOMETOWN: THE PLAINS CHILD’S NAME: ELLIE
What would be your ideal way to spend Father’s Day?
My ideal Father's Day would be to not have to go into work, to be ultimately retired sitting on my front porch with my gray hair and wrinkly skin and watching my grandchildren run around the front yard. My daughter would have taken over Ellie’s Place, which she actually named. When we first walked in to sign a lease, she was 2 ½ years old and I said, “What do you think, sweetheart?” and she said, “I like it; it’s my place.” She’s 6 now, and every Friday at 5:00, she sets up her lemonade stand in front of the restaurant.

What was your most memorable Father’s Day?
When my son was four or five years old, we went on a Father’s Day canoe trip down the Rappahannock with a bunch of friends who all had kids around the same age. It was just this really wonderful moment where your young son is in the front of the boat and you're in the back, but what was also so special to me is the memories that I've had with my father, Tim, canoeing, picnicking and everything else we did along the river. To be able to have that moment where I got to be in the reverse role was great.

What does being a father mean to you?
I like a low key day, spending it with my kids — after all, they’re who made me a dad. They let me sleep in a little, we have breakfast, play a little baseball, and then go to my Dad’s for dinner. He’s my stepfather, and he raised me from the time I was six. When we were little, Father’s Day was all about making his day special. He had a physical job, so we tried to do all the chores and make it as relaxing as possible. After all, he took on three little boys, and we were a handful, but he made it all about us. Now he’s all about my kids, going to games and art shows. Everything is always about family.
I have two boys, Joe IV (age 4) and Mix (age 2 1/2). Being a father has enriched my life in so many ways it is hard to put into words. They are definitely my best buds. It is so much fun watching them grow and learn new things each day. On one hand, I can't wait to see what they will do next, but at the same time, I'm in no rush!

What does being a father mean to you?
Being a father means I get to enjoy this wonderful journey called life with my children. When my children were young, I was their protector, watching over them. As they grew, I became a teacher, instructing them about life and admiring their innocence. As they entered middle/junior high, I became a role model as peer pressure began and they looked to emulate someone. When senior high arrived, I put on my coach’s hat to direct them, but they made the final decisions. Now in their adulthood, I am the mentor giving advice when asked, praying for their safety and prosperity. Victories were won and mistakes were made along the way, but I don’t regret this journey called fatherhood.

What was your most memorable Father’s Day?
I became a stepfather 10 years ago, but I’ve known my stepchildren their entire lives. My most memorable Father's Day was my first Father's Day. We had a lovely day of food and a couple of gifts, and I got my first Father's Day card. I'm very close to my own father, and I've drawn from his love and his wisdom to be a loving, caring and supportive father. I love my stepkids and I support their dreams and their hopes and ambitions. When I became their stepdad, my life changed. It’s the most important thing I've ever done.

Congratulations, Seniors! Open Letter to the Seniors of the Class of 2022
G
raduating class of 2022, take a bow; you deserve it. You have completed high school during one of the most challenging times in our country’s history. I know that you have worked very hard. High school is tough these days and it is impossible to sail through without tenacity and strength, especially if you are ambitious and have your sights set on future greatness of some kind. After you walk across that stage to receive your diploma, take a moment to take it all in. Graduating is not a small accomplishment and you should appreciate it. Now that you have finished high school, it is important to appreciate what you have just accomplished. Too often, you are urged to think about what is next and in so doing, are unable to appreciate the now. These days, it always seems to be about what is next. Many of you have already chosen your next steps and I commend you. No matter what you choose to do next; whether it is college, serving our country, or entering the workforce, we are proud of you. Don’t pressure yourself to have all the answers and decisions about your future now. You will be continually evolving. Don't be afraid to make mistakes or change your mind. Just remember to continue to learn, grow and become passionate about a cause that's important to you. I want you to know that your Sheriff ’s Office is proud of you. Congratulations on a job well done!

REAL FAST CARS
Curtis Stuart and Mike Donovan have made Sumerduck Dragway into a laid back, community oriented venue where both experienced and inexperienced drivers can try out their speedy rides. STORY AND PHOTOS BY JAMES JARVIS

s far back as he can remember, Curtis Stuart dreamed of owning a race car. Fast forward a little over five decades, he now drives several fast cars and co-owns the Sumerduck Dragway with his partner Mark Donovan. “We bought [Sumerduck] two years ago… this is our third year here,” Stuart said. When asked why they bought it, Stuart chuckled and responded humorously saying, “We needed the punishment.” Since he was 16, Stuart was drag racing every chance he could get. He was poor growing up and didn’t have access to a car. But, fortunately, Stuart said the father of his

good friend, Cliff Ewell, let him use his car to race. “[Cliff ’s] dad always had him in a nice car and he would let me sit in and do burnouts and stuff like that and that kind of got me hooked,” Stuart said. Racing became a huge part of Stuart’s life after that and he worked hard washing dishes at the Frost Diner in Warrenton, which he later purchased and has owned for the last 22 years, and mowing the lawn to save up for a new car. “It was my dream to have that real fast car,” he said. Having grown up in Chantilly, Stuart said
he used to visit the Old Dominion Speedway in Manassas and bet a dollar on certain cars when had some extra cash. He didn’t always win, but he enjoyed the culture and experience. “Usually you’ve always got that one guy that's been to every race,” Stuart said looking back at his time at Old Dominion. “He knows every car, and you're the greenhorn, like me, he's got you.” Before they bought Sumerduck, in 2010, Stuart said he and Donovan purchased Colonial Beach Dragway in Colonial Beach, Virginia, about an hour east of Fauquier along the Potomac River.

“IT AIN’T ALL ABOUT HOW FAST YOU’RE GOING, IT’S JUST ABOUT HAVING FUN AND RUNNING WHAT YOU GOT.” Stuart, 61, and Donovan, 60, had met several years earlier while Donovan, a Fauquier native, was eating at Stuart’s Frost Diner. They became fast friends, Stuart said, after realizing their shared love of racing and community. “[Mark’s] got the same heart,” he said. “I guess that's why we clicked. We're different every other way. But when it comes down to it, we like helping people.” When they bought Colonial Beach, Stuart said it was a fixer-upper. But after several years pouring money and elbow grease into the track it became a success, bringing in 3,000 spectators most weekends. “When we bought Colonial Beach we should have had our heads examined, but it worked out,” Stuart said. But after several years, Stuart said Colonial Beach started to wear him and Donovan out. Not only was the commute far, but the people they attracted weren't really “their cup of tea.” “It's more of a grudge track, and we're more family oriented,” Stuart said. Grudge racing is a form of drag racing that is very popular in the South and throughout other areas of the county that many describe

as a form of competition where racers talk a lot of smack, play mind games and bet large amounts of money. “It was just different,” Stuart said. Stuart and Donovan decided to sell Colonial Beach in 2018 because it had become too burdensome. But they weren’t ready to give up running a race track just yet, and had started discussions with the previous owners of Sumerduck, Mike and Joy Anderson, about buying their race track. Built in 1959, the dragway has changed hands and been renovated several times over the course of its 60 plus year history. When it was first purchased by Roger Curtis in 1963, Sumerduck was just a big empty field with a long paved track running through the middle. There were no guardrails, no lights, no timing system, just the track. Curtis made modifications to the track and ran it for about forty years until he turned over the operation to the Andersons. The Andersons then sold it to Stuart and Donovan in 2019. But it needed a lot of work, and Mark noted they had to do some major renovations on the track after they bought it, including moving the starting line back 100 feet, putting in new underground electrical system, as well
as polishing and grinding the track, among other things. “This track looks nothing like it was,” he said. But it was worth it, Stuart said. They love not only that the track is closer to home but it’s also a much smaller, laid back, community oriented venue. People come from all over the area, and some are experienced racers, but many are also in high school or have never raced a day in their life. “Many people just come here and play,” Stuart said. Those interested in racing can come by the racetrack on Thursdays to “test and tune” their vehicle. Sumerduck has about 24 races scheduled almost every Saturday from March until October and tickets for spectators are between $10 - $13. (And if you have sensitive hearing we recommend you bring your ear plugs). There are strict safety standards for the people who do come to the track, and if racers are below 18 they usually have to wear a helmet, straps, as well as special pants, jacket and shoes. However, Stuart and Donovan’s most important rule is that people have fun. “And that's the truth,” Stuart said. “It ain't all about how fast you're going, it's just about

The Eyes and Ears of the Court Manassas-based Children’s Intervention Services has opened an office in Warrenton BY JAYA PATIL PHOTOS COURTESY OF CASA CIS
right here,” Catherwood noted. Children’s Intervention Services Founded in 1994, Children’s Intervention Services (CIS) is a Prince William-based nonprofit organization advocating for child victims living in Fauquier, Prince William, Rappahannock, and Warren Counties and the cities of Manassas and Manassas Park. About a year ago, with support from the PATH Foundation, CIS opened a satellite office in Warrenton to better serve children in Fauquier, Rappahannock, and Warren Counties. “It has been wonderful for us to have a home base. It has given us a presence in this community that is beneficial on every level,” said Catherwood. The office is not far from the courthouse and provides a space for Catherwood to meet with advocates, hold meetings and training, and host receptions after advocates are sworn in.
Court Appointed Special Advocates
PATH has also awarded CIS a grant within the last year to support the efforts to train the backbone of CIS, their Court Appointed Special Advocates. They are the eyes and ears of the court when it comes to juvenile cases of neglect and abuse. CASAs are specially trained community volunteers appointed by Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court Judges to speak in the best interest of children who are brought before the court for reasons of abuse or neglect. The CASA is an official part of the judicial proceedings, working alongside attorneys, social workers and other professionals. By handling only one or two cases at a time, the CASA has time to thoroughly explore the history of each assigned case and get to know the children well to better assess their needs.
The calling to be a CASA

“A
good CASA can make a difference in a legal case and a child’s life,” said Megan Catherwood, Child Advocacy Supervisor of the Children’s Intervention Services office in Fauquier County. By advocating for abused and neglected children, their volunteers (called CASAs) give children a voice and a chance for a better life.

Every day, children are being abused, neglected or abandoned by the people who are supposed to love, care for and protect them. Unfortunately, this is an unavoidable fact, even in Fauquier County. “It’s easy to think in [our] extraordinarily beautiful part of the country with the charm of these historic towns that this kind of abuse and neglect doesn’t happen here, but those things are
“I’m familiar with the calling to become a child advocate as a volunteer because I was one myself,” Catherwood said. Her mother was a CASA at one point and the children that Megan fostered in Columbus often had advocates. When they moved to Fauquier, Megan started to volunteer as a CASA in 2014. Megan became a supervisor in 2018 for CIS’ expansion into Warren. “I’m here to guide, support, and encourage our volunteers,” she said. She is fulfilled by “how many people in our community are willing to take on this noble work, stick with it through thick and thin, and go great lengths and distances.” She said some advocates drive three hours to see their assigned child.

Julia owned and operated Designer Interiors in Warrenton for many years before branching out into Real Estate in 2005. Back before HGTV or the housing market were the rage, Julia was helping homeowners invest in their homes, transforming spaces and then seeing her client’s homes sell overnight. It was exhilarating to see the finished products and then how quickly they would sell. Over the last seventeen years, the Real Estate career has taken precedence over the Interior Design business simply because from the start of her career, she has been a top producing REALTOR, earning many awards from her brokerage and her REALTOR association. In 2021, Julia expanded her business into a team that has quickly grown to seven agents, Cornerstone Realty Team. Julia states that, “Together, it is our goal to serve our clients with excellence, professionalism, competence, knowledge and experience, built on a foundation of character and integrity.” If you need a REALTOR, who possesses these attributes, look no further, contact Julia Foard-Lynch, REALTOR at 540.270.4274 You can view her websites at JFL.C21NM.COM & CORNERSTONE.C21NM.COM

“According to a 2007 audit by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of the Inspector General, children who have a CASA advocate receive more services than children without a CASA, spend less time in foster care, are less likely to return to the system reabused, and are more likely to be adopted.” The CASA experience
Catherwood praises the Fauquier County Department of Social Services for being as dedicated to the kids as the CASAs are. It’s consequential — and sometimes heartrending — work that can take an emotional toll on the CASA. Advocates are bound by strict confidentiality laws, so they don’t have the usual outlets to unwind and share their challenges. Part of Catherwood’s role as a supervisor is to be one of those outlets for the volunteers to share their emotional experiences. Megan said, “We’re here to provide encouragement and moral support for the CASAs, and celebrate and congratulate them when they’ve made a positive impact.” CIS encourages anyone who is interested to fill the office too. They encourage anyone to reach out if they’re interested in being a voice for kids in need. Experience with children is not necessary. “It’s not about your background experience,” Catherwood asserted, “We have CASAs who are government contractors, educators, in real estate… you 1 Warrenton-Lifestyle-Women-01.pdf
The Role of CASAs Establish a stable, one-on-one relationship with a child, get to know the child’s unique history. Help the child develop and manage age appropriate goals. Support the child’s access to needed medical, education, career, and housing services. Present a written report to the court and attend court proceedings. Make informed, independent recommendations to the judge about the child’s best interests. added. Ultimately, she said, “These are just kids who value an adult who shows up regularly and wants to understand who they are. “They’re still kids in the end who appreciate adult one-on-one attention, whether they’re two years old or 17.” w

CHASIN THE MUSIC Mike Parker’s journey from Warrenton to the American Idol stage
BY PAM KAMPHUIS
M
ike Parker said, “To me, Country music is everything that I signed up for, but it’s crafted differently than I thought. It’s like looking at the presents under the Christmas tree and wondering what’s in the packages and knowing it’s going to be something really cool. Now that I’m digging into country music even deeper, it’s like I’m opening the packages and finding that what’s inside is way better, way cooler, than anything I ever even imagined might be in there.” It’s just as well that Parker feels that way, because the 27-year-old American Idol star and Fauquier native whose ancestry in northern Fauquier goes back many generations has found his calling with Country music, even though it’s not where he started originally. According to his mother, Dr. DeJuanna Parker, music just wasn’t something her son could escape. “Music and performing is in Michael’s blood,” she said. The youngest of four siblings, his original exposure to music came from his parents, who founded bands playing Soul and R&B in the sixties, seventies,

Dr. Parker continued, “When I met my husband, he played the sax, which was my favorite musical instrument. And I just sighed to myself, “Oh, yeah, that sax.” He had me at the first bar. I’d always wanted to perform with a full band behind me, and he made that happen for me. Those are some really good memories and some of the best years of my life.” After finishing in the top 10 of this year’s American Idol, Mike and his parents sat down with Warrenton Lifestyle and shared a little about their family and experience.
WL: First of all, is it nice to be home after your American Idol experience?
Mike: Oh yeah, it’s home. I loved growing up here, and I know the area like the back of my hand. It’s a place of knowing and comfort. It’s good to feel the hometown love.
WL: There’s a lot of that, isn’t there?
Mike: There is, for sure. It’s a great feeling.
WL: Tell me about your first performing experience.
Mike: The first “step out” that I had was in the fourth grade talent show at PB Smith. Reuben had just won American Idol singing “Flying without Wings.” I picked that song and I had a white suit on. I was trying to look so spiffy. Afterward, I had teachers coming
up to me and telling me how amazing my performance was, even teachers that I didn’t generally have much interaction with. That was the first time I realized that I loved music and performing…it was like this warm feeling. Like an orangish-reddish mask over my vision. I’ll always remember that moment. That was the first time I thought to myself, “Now this is really cool.”
WL: Have there been any local musicians that influenced you growing up?
Mike: I continued at Kettle Run until the tenth grade, then football started to take over. Orchestra had a lot of practices and functions that I would have felt bad to miss. Football was my bread and butter, my day to day life through high school. I played defense — strong safety. But I still attended a talent show here and there. I went to Kettle Run for three and a half years, and then finished my senior year at Fauquier High and graduated in 2013. That was when they built the new addition to the school, and I did a talent show there. It was awesome, that part of high school was so cool. I had a really good time at FHS.
Mike: Oh, yeah! Mr. Tester at Warrenton Middle School. I’ve got to give a big shout WL: You’re now known for your Country out to Mr. Tester. In the seventh grade, I was sound, as they encouraged you on Ameriin band, and I was sick and tired of it. I just can Idol. Did you always play Country? didn’t like the sound of the music. In the Mike: No, I really started out as R&B and mornings I used to stand outside Mr. Tester’s orchestra room and listen to the tuning of the Rock. My brother took a video of me playing and posted it on YouTube. That’s when I instruments, and even while they were just warming up I thought the sound was so much got an email from The Voice asking me to better. So I asked him if I could switch to his class, and it was the best thing ever. He was serious about music, when you hit a wrong note, he’d bang his baton on the music stand; man, he really did some damage to some of them. He’d Left: Mike with Country usually go around star Gabby Barrett, who also got her start on and tune all the stuAmerican Idol. come to the open call and audition. It took three tries, but then I got a chair turn on the Jennifer Hudson team. After the knockout rounds, I moved to LA to play music and I was performing at all these known rock venues, and I was still playing R&B. I knew that you really need specific sounds for Country. Country is Country because of that whining guitar sound, just that classic guitar sound. That strikes your ear. It’s hard to replicate that digitally. Country music wasn’t in the back of my mind then. I also started to work more at my regular job — I was trying to stay afloat financially, and I knew I wanted music but I wasn’t focusing on it like I should have, even though I moved to LA to do just that. And Covid didn’t help, of course.
WL: So when did you become more interested in the Country sound?
Dr. Parker: I’d like to explain something here. I used to go see my son perform, especially around the Warrenton area, and he reads his audiences very well. Sometimes he would sing these songs that I didn’t know, and I really thought, “This song is the bomb.” He was working some Country songs into his sets, like Chris Stapleton and Tennessee Whiskey. And when he played them, he always got a great response from the audience. And he had a great time singing those songs because of that interaction. Response from the audience feeds the performer. I think that may have been a factor in developing more interest in the Country sound. Mike: Yeah, for sure. That entire process was validating.
WL: How do you feel about Country music now?
Mike: Country music really comes from the heart, and it took American Idol for me to realize that. I really thought before going into a recording, “I can chameleon my way into this,” but then once I sang “Strawberry Wine,” I was like, “Oh no, man, you can’t just wing it, you gotta think about where you came from.” It taught me to sing from a different place. Meeting Jimmie Allen at American Idol was crazy; it was like he was my big brother at first sight. He’s the one who really instilled in me that Country comes from the heart.
WL: Tell me a little bit about the American Idol experience. Mike: I remember looking at the lists, and meeting in these massive conference rooms in these massive hotels. At one point there were 168 of us who got golden tick-

ets. To see the room dwindle down every week as I remained was such an amazing feeling. The day of Disney Night I got off the elevator and there was, like, nobody there. I thought, “Man, this is it.” I’m going to remember that for the rest of my life. To live that experience-that’s never going to happen again. I’ve gained what I was looking for from American Idol. I feel like everybody did. Everyone was so good, and they were all on a mission, and everybody got what they came for. And that’s what American Idol does, it’s a really different experience than The Voice. Every dream that I had, they made come true.
WL: How disappointed were you when you were not voted back?
Mike: Obviously it hurts, no one signs up to go home, but in reality, everybody goes home except one person. But I took the competition really seriously. People would tell me, “You need to smile, bro,” and I would think, “Well, ok, I will, but I need to win!” I’m competitive by nature, which stems from sports. But I’m really into my feelings and emotions, and I’m ok. I’ve been told “no” before. Dr. Parker: But remember, out of tens of thousands of people, you made it to the top ten.
WL: What does the future hold?
Mike: I’m going back to LA for the American Idol finale. Then going to work in Nashville with a new buddy who wrote plenty of big hits. That’s going to be my work station. I’m excited. It’s awesome. I’m not going to name him now, just out of respect for him. But Jimmie Allen did shoot me his number, so he’s ready to work with me also. I don’t think I’ll ever have a regular job again. I live
my life chasing the music. I do what I have to do in order to do what I want to do.
WL: Dr. and Mr. Parker, how proud are you right now?
Dr. Parker: I don’t know, pride is one of the things that I feel, certainly, but it’s more like a feeling of fulfillment. I think every parent wants their children to do better than they did, and to find their passion. I’m a career educator, so of course I wanted them to pursue college degrees, but I’ve had to come to terms with the fact that they are not me, and they have to go their own way. That’s when I realized that what I really want for them is to identify their gift, to find the thing that brings them joy, and to pursue it. Michael’s done that. He understands his gift, and he shares it. I want him to be a lifelong artist and make an impact that way. But “proud”, that’s a word, indeed. Mr. Parker: The point of life is doing what you want to do and knowing that persistence pays off. If you get off track, you lose that persistence for what it is you want. The more Michael keeps doing what he’s doing, the more he’s going to learn and the better it’s going to be. w IG: @musicbymikeparker FB: @musicbymikeparker youtube.com/channel/UC5bNibVVl4ORQH8oGvE1x0Q

From Biscuits to Paradise Wanye Solomon retraces his journey as an entrepreneur BY JAYA PATIL PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER
W
anye Solomon didn’t plan to be the owner of a dog daycare, but eight years after becoming an entrepreneur he says God had other plans for him. Wanye laid the path with Biscuits–his first business, that is, Biscuits Dog Walking & Sitting. Come July, the Kettle Run High graduate will be celebrating his twenty-first birthday and a year of Pawz Paradise Dog Daycare–the perfect chance to reminisce on how he got here.
Starting with Biscuits
“I wanted to be an entrepreneur and I was good with dogs,” Solomon said when recounting how he started Biscuits while in Auburn Middle School. Fliers around town–middle school typos included–covered Vint Hill at the time and Wanye had a couple of clients, but he was making his own money. By graduation time in 2019, Wanye had a small loyal customer base. As 2019 ended, Wanye was juggling classes at Lord Fairfax Community College, Biscuits, and part-time work. He wanted to get into real estate and worked with Real Estate Agent Heidi Wulf, who said, “I thought he was a little older because he was mature.” Wanye recounted, “I wasn’t putting a lot of faith into [Biscuits], I thought of it as a side-gig.”
Lows and highs
When COVID hit in 2020, he figured there was no point in carrying the business farther with the loss of clients.

Wanye with Sammy, a beagle who has come for day care.
Wanye was stressed with virtual learning and took a break for a few semesters. “It was a scary decision,” he said of the break, but he knew what wasn’t working for him. What did work for him was Biscuits, as summer of 2020 brought about new clients. Business was booming by October. With many people getting pandemic pets and needing pet care as they returned to work, Wanye decided to open a dog daycare for 2021.
Finding his purpose
“I thought I was too young to buy a [place]. My mom said, ‘You’re not too young to do anything’,” Wanye recalled about his hunt for a building. Heidi wasn’t surprised by his drive, noting his integrity, responsibility, and ambition from the moment she met him. “I can’t

think of enough nice things to say about him,” she shared. After gathering advice, praying on it, and getting out of a premature lease on a place in Catlett, he eventually found his current building off Broadview close to the Village Center in early 2021. From May to July he signed for it, obtained approvals and permits, and opened up shop a week after his birthday in late July. “Regardless of if I’m making enough finances for myself, this is something that I like to do and I’m grateful I chose this,” he said.
Creating a paradise
The space is long instead of wide, but he made it work. They smoothed the floors and a contractor from his church built the short wall that sections off the play area. “I have to work with what I have, and it takes time to grow but I’m glad I have something to start with,” Wanye said. The space serves as a headquarters more than an all-encompassing facility–“that’s why we do dog park trips and get the dogs out,” he said. Not only do they excel in fun, Pawz effectuates strong social skills and stimulation for dogs. They provide plenty of exercise and open play, while scheduling time for dogs to decompress.

Although his time as an entrepreneur hasn’t been simple, he said, “My family taught me how to present myself and always think positively… Situations will always change, you have to push on.” “He’s not fearful and that’s why I know he will have continued success,” Heidi said. Wanye admits to the same fears as anyone else might have, but he doesn’t consider them as limits. He got into it for the independence of running his own business but found a God-given calling along the way. Wanye shared, “I was told that if you think big, you’ll get big. Very impressive yet very easy! No air fryer? Bake in the oven: Not quite as crispy but still oh-so good! MAKES 2 ONIONS SERVES 2 TO 4 INGREDIENTS
2 Vidalia or sweet onions (each about 3” in diameter x 2“ high) 8 pinches of flour (for dusting - about ½ teaspoon) 6 Tablespoons cornmeal ¼ cup mayonnaise 4 teaspoons sugar ½ cup beer Topping: 1 teaspoon additional corn meal Cooking spray Garnish Old Bay Seasoning or Smoked Paprika DIRECTIONS

Slice the top off each onion to expose its rings. Remove outer peel & discard. Wash and dry the onions. With root ends up, poke the tip of a sharp knife into one onion ½ inch away from the root. Cut down through the onion. Continue making cuts ½ inch away from the root for a total of 8 equally spaced cuts. Repeat with second onion. Invert the cut onions. Using fingers and a knife tip, separate the cuts to form petals. Dust the petals (inside and out) with flour using 4 pinches for each onion. Flour will not completely cover petals. Set aside. In a small bowl, mix cornmeal, mayonnaise, sugar, and beer. Using a spoon, divide batter equally between the onions spreading it on both sides of each petal. Batter will not cover completely or evenly.

GoFundMe to help Fauquier County family raises nearly $10K in first day A GoFundMe campaign established to help a Fauquier County family involved in a severe car crash raised nearly $10,000 in its first 24 hours. “The Shelton Family” page was launched to benefit Helena Shelton and her three children, according to a Facebook post shared by Fauquier County Public Schools. The family was involved in a head-on collision in Upperville that claimed the life of a 29-year-old Winchester woman. While the Sheltons survived, they all endured severe injuries and have undergone surgeries. “You can imagine what the father has been going through as he travels day and night from Fairfax to Upperville, trying to take care of every person in his family. They need our support,” the page’s organizer states.
