elcome to spring! Although it’s early March, the early bulbs are already starting to come up. Hopefully spring is here to stay. March is for St. Patrick’s Day, and in this issue we’ve got ways to help you celebrate. Beth Luna has put together a selection of local pubs and eateries that have something special for the holiday, and our food writer, Karla Seidita, has some Irish recipes for you to try. I have always said, this magazine is for our readers. We have no agenda, other than to celebrate businesses and individuals in our community. We want our readers to be more involved. We always invite recommendations for subjects for articles. After all, we can’t be everywhere and know everything. And people have been writing in with fantastic ideas. You will notice interspersed in the pages of the magazine invitations to submit article ideas to us. These are in the form of reminding readers of particularly meaningful past articles, hoping to jog people’s minds about similar subjects. In these pages, we also supply a QR code to the original article. So we invite you to scan the codes and go back to these special articles. Maybe you’ll have some ideas for us, and we look forward to hearing them.

Q & A

Seedling, Strawberry and Potato Tips I

n this ongoing series, we hope to help current gardeners as well as inspire beginners to start. Fauquier County has so many resources to support gardeners, and a lot of people with a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Jim Hankins, executive director of the Fauquier Education Farm, is our local expert, and he is answering questions from our readers.

I've purchased strawberry roots from Home Depot, can I get them started now indoors in pots so they can get a head start? Or should I wait to plant them directly in the garden? Your bare root strawberry plants can be planted in late March or early April. The plants will be just fine if you plant them before the last frost. It would probably be better to plant them directly in the soil where you want them to grow, rather than putting them in a flower pot first.

The seedlings I've started indoors are teeming with little flying gnats. Are they harmful, or just annoying?

The tiny gnats on your new seedlings are likely whiteflies, a common pest on indoor vegetables. A good organic pesticide would be really helpful, I most often suggest Pyganic. It works really well as is safe and easy to use if you read and follow the directions. We are having a whitefly problem at the Education Farm right now with some lettuce in the greenhouse. They can be very harmful to your plants if left alone.

8 Warrenton Lifestyle

MARCH 2022

Some of the seedlings I've started indoors have a purplish tint to the stems and leaves. I'm using artificial grow lights, could this be the cause?

Above: Jim Hankins, executive director of the Fauquier Education Farm, located at 8428 Meetze Road in Warrenton. The Fauquier Education Farm offers agriculture-related education through demonstrations, classroom instruction, on-farm workshops, and hands-on learning. The farm also supports the community by contributing all of its agricultural products to local food banks and by providing volunteer opportunities. Learn more at fauquier educationfarm.org

I wouldn't worry too much about the purple tint. Seedlings can often be a very different color than the mature plants. It may be the lights or the type of soil you are using. As long as they are growing you'll most likely be good. It can be a good idea after the seedlings are a couple weeks old to feed them with a mild plant food in their water about once a week.

What seed starting mix do you recommend?

You can purchase quality potting soil at any good garden center. It's not a good place to try to save money. The better quality, Miracle Grow or Peter's potting soil is worth the extra cost.

Can I cut up and plant grocery store potatoes that have sprouted roots in my pantry?

You can certainly plant potatoes from your pantry. A day or two before you intend to plant them just cut them into chunks that each have at least one "eye" or little sprout starting to form. You can plant the ones with big sprouts too. It's really easy! w Have a vegetable gardening question for Jim? Send it to editor@warrentonlifestyle.com and it might be answered in our next issue.

Celebrate Women’s History Month at the Library BY LISA PAVLOCK, FAUQUIER PUBLIC LIBRARY

T

he origins of Women’s History Month can be traced back to 1978’s “Women’s History Day” in Sonoma County, California. A few years later, Congress passed a law authorizing the week of March 7 Women’s History Week. In 1987, the entire month of March was designated Women’s History Month – a time to celebrate the contributions women have made to the United States and their achievements throughout the course of American history. There are many ways to observe Women’s History Month, like watching movies about women and their accomplishments or reading books with strong female characters. Make your local library your first stop as you celebrate Women’s History Month.

Explore the History of Women’s Rights

Whether researching for a school paper or broadening your understanding of the pivotal role women have played in history, the online tools Biography in Context and Gale in Context | Elementary provide biographical information on hundreds of notable women. Voted the 2021 Fauquier Times Readers’ Choice Award for Best Summer Camp, Verdun Adventure Bound offers families peace of mind and campers a safe environment where they can not only have fun, but grow and learn.

Summer’s Coming: Get Ready for Camp! BY SUSAN MCCORKINDALE

A

t the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, the summer camp industry took a real hit. But, according to the American Camp Association, the 2021 season saw a huge resurgence, with the number of campers nearly equivalent to that of 2018. With the 2022 camping season on the horizon, that’s good news for our local summer camps and campers. “This summer we anticipate an increased demand for summer programming and activities, and have planned accordingly,” said Kirsten Bradley, Public Information Coordinator for the Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation. “We believe that there is still a great need in our community for school age programs that provide a safe and fun environment.” Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation’s "Summer of Fun" day camps are open to children ages 5-12 and offer trips to the pool, arts and crafts, group games, field trips, special trips, and more. Aimee O’Grady of Verdun Adventure Bound echoes Bradley’s sentiments. “At this point in the season our summer camp enrollments are comparable to last year’s,” said O’Grady, “and we’re very excited about our upcoming summer program.” Verdun Adventure Bound offers a variety of summer camps for children ages 7-17. Its camps are designed to bring campers together with nature and each other to grow as individuals all while having fun. The camps provide a safe space for children to disconnect from electronics and participate in activities like zip lining, climbing-tower, high ropes, kayaking, fishing, water games, and more. Both Fauquier County Parks and Rec and Verdun Adventure Bound enjoyed full enrollment with waiting lists in last summer’s camps. “We were very grateful to host our 2021 camp pro-

As an outdoor adventure camp, campers at Verdun remain outside where it’s easier to maintain social distance. A Safe Place to Learn and Grow Boys & Girls Clubs of Fauquier is growing and reaching out into the community BY LINDSAY HOGEBOOM

hen asked what his favorite part of the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fauquier is, Jeremy Bland answers, “The kids…. They can brighten up your day just as much as you can brighten up theirs. That’s what a lot of people don’t realize — you can learn a lot from kids if you listen to them.” Since 2017, Bland has served the Boys and Girls Clubs of Fauquier in a variety of roles, including youth development professional and mentor, academic assistant, Passport to Manhood program facilitator, and more. In January, Bland officially took on the role of director of clubs, where he works alongside Dr. Silvia Moore, who was appointed CEO of the organization in June of 2021. The two bring a diverse set of expertise to the clubs: Moore has an extensive background in education, while Bland is a lifelong resident of Fauquier County and has first-hand knowledge about the community members and their needs. Both are committed to the success of children in the county. The mission of Boys & Girls Clubs of Fauquier is “to help boys and girls of all backgrounds — especially those who need us most — build confidence, develop character and acquire the skills needed to become productive, civic-minded, responsible adults.” While the clubs are open for kids outside of school hours, it is much more than a typical after-school program. “It’s a place for kids to come have fun with a purpose,” explains Moore. “This club is voluntary. The kids don’t have to come here — they come here because they want to.” Bland adds, “They can come in here and the possibilities are really limitless. Some after-school programs focus on just tutoring [or] mentorship, but we try to provide variety.” According to Moore, to ensure children’s needs are being met and they are eager to participate, it’s important to

the community is aware of all the resources and services the organization offers and that they are welcome to take part. “Warrenton knows we’re here, but I don’t think they know us, so I think our next job is to go out into neighborhoods and to let parents know that we’re here, that we’re a club for their kids, but we’re also responsible adults who will guide [their children] and we can be trusted,” she says. As for why they choose to do this work, Bland says, “To provide a safe and inclusive environment for everybody. I want every kid and every parent to feel as though [the kids] can really [come] here, and when they leave, that they’re leaving with something — whether it’s a new skill or whether it’s in a better mood. That’s something that really resonates with me, making sure that everybody is safe here and everybody leaves with at least a little something every day.” Moore agrees: “Who doesn’t want to impact the lives of kids, of society, of the community?” she says. “That’s really what we’re doing. We have a chance to make a difference.” w Bgcfauquier.org 169 Keith Street, Warrenton | 11138 Marsh Road, Bealeton 540-349-8890 | clubinfo@bgcfauquier.org

have buy-in from them about the programs offered, which aim to prepare them to be successful adults. Some of the current programs include Power Hour, during which kids do homework and practice becoming self-directed learners; Triple Play, a physical activity-based program that aims to teach how emotions and actions intertwine; Project Learn, which can consist of any activity that helps the kids to learn a new skill or extend their knowledge; and Passport to Manhood and Smart Girls, which each allow boys and girls to meet with other kids their age and gender to discuss challenges, events or any other important topics happening in their lives. Moore and Bland both agree that mentorship is an integral aspect of each of these programs. The Boys & Girls Clubs of Fauquier encourage the kids to choose their mentor — usually a staff member who the child feels a connection with. “I feel it’s really important because you don’t really know what [the kids] are getting at home,” says Bland. “You want to make sure you give those kids an opportunity at least every day to sit down and talk about their day, because you never know if they don’t go home to that.” While the Boys & Girls Clubs welcome volunteer mentors, “Our mentorship program is not for the weak of heart, because our staff has gone through hours of training,” including social justice practices training and trauma-informed care training, and will soon be taking part in anti-trafficking training, says Moore. “I think one of the most powerful things that is coming out of the mentorship is an outreach to parents,” says Moore. She explains that staff have identified a need to help many of the kids with reading to bring them up to grade level, “so what we really like to do is partner with parents, partner with teachers, assess the kids’ reading level and then help them to get up to grade levels. That’s our next big program that I think we're going to be hiring for and we’re going to be instituting with parents.” To that end, Moore says they are always looking for volunteers who can help with reading education. Additionally, the staff welcome any volunteers who are able to teach hands-on activities, which helps to bring a diverse set of skills to club members and expose kids to a variety of potential interests. One aspect of the Boys & Girls Clubs that really sets it apart from other childcare programs is the individualized and personalized care that kids and families receive from staff who tailor everything to fit each child’s and family’s needs — from programs to finances. “I think the most important thing about the club is that the kids have a sense of belonging,” says Moore. “They know they belong, and that the adults in this building are here for them. And we’re always stressing that to them: ‘This is your club. We are here for you. If you don’t like something, tell us. We’ll change it.’” Additionally, Moore says, “If you don’t have the money to attend the Boys & Girls Clubs, it doesn’t matter. We will not turn kids away because of financial reasons.” While the Boys & Girls Clubs of Fauquier opens its doors to all, Moore says she is still on a mission to ensure

A Sperryville Adventure Belle Meade Montessori School, Farm, Bed & Breakfast, and Summer Camp BY PAM KAMPHUIS

S

usan Hoffman and Mike Biniek have a lot going on out in Sperryville. They moved from DC and Alexandria in 1993 to fulfill their dream of creating a model community for sustainable living. The result is Belle Meade Farm, Montessori School, Bed and Breakfast, and Summer day camps. Housed on138 acres with streams, rolling hills, pastures, woodlands, a swimming pool, and a pond, Belle Meade has become a dynamic community. “The move was a major adjustment, but we’re both so glad we did it,” says Susan. While Susan was still commuting to the city for her job as a teacher, one winter morning she was inspired to start a summer day camp for kids. That became the number one priority, the first project for the

property. They immediately put in a pool, even before the house was renovated. “First things first,” Susan says. The camp opened in 1994. It is still in operation today, offering the kids hiking trips to Shenandoah National Park, swimming, pond activities, arts and crafts, archery, and more. Next, they turned their attention to the farm and the bed and breakfast. The farm had gone downhill, but Mike gradually brought it back to life. His goal was to put the vitality back in the land, which he accomplished by implementing rotational grazing for the cattle and chickens. The farm now produces pork, beef, lamb, and poultry products. All the livestock are free-range, grass fed, and raised without hormones or antibiotics, producing lean, healthy meat. Then in 2004 came the school, which started small and grew gradually to offer all grades from primary through high school. A Montessori school, the exceptional education promotes individual responsibility as well as social and environmental consciousness through experiential learning. Belle Meade has grown into what it is today because of Susan and Mike’s flexible, nurturing patience as they developed the different components of their holistic vision. Susan says, “I’d say It’s been an adventure. But there’s no past tense to that, it is an adventure.” w www.bellemeade.net

Out-ofthe-box Thinking in the Courtroom Ashwell & Ashwell Comes to Town — And the Town Knows the Ashwells Well BY PAM KAMPHUIS PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER

T

he law is all about winning cases, right? People sometimes ask Warrenton lawyer Will Ashwell, “What’s your win percentage in court?” His response? “That’s not really how I think about success. I attack a problem and figure out what the client’s looking for and I do the absolute best job I can. I think looking back when I really felt like I’ve done that, that’s probably the best part for me. That said, clients choose Ashwell & Ashwell because of our track record — from traffic cases and juvenile court to complex real estate issues and capital murder. By focusing 100% of our expertise on clients we can deliver better outcomes … and a better experience” Will Ashwell is one of those people who knows everyone in town, and everyone knows him. And if they don’t know him, they know or have heard of his dad, Judge J. Gregory Ashwell, who served as a prosecutor and on the bench in Fauquier County for 14 years. Ashwell is a native of Warrenton, and a graduate of Notre Dame Academy in Middleburg. He attended Hampden-Sydney College and then spent a year coaching lacrosse in Manchester, England. He says, “I had always maintained close contacts here, and worked for local lawyers during law school. And my family was here. Tell me about the decision to open your own law office. It was one of those things which was a natural evolution. It wasn’t anything that dad and I ever specifically talked about but I think once it became clear that his time as a judge was over, we started thinking, ‘This would be neat.’ I was thinking of going out on my own anyway, so we decided to do it together. It worked out really naturally. I don’t think my dad will ever retire, he’ll always have one foot under the desk. I’ll probably be the same way.

Warrenton is kind of like this nice little epicenter but at the same time, you walk down the street and see people you know, which you don’t get in a lot of towns.” Ashwell and Lucy maximize the benefits of living in Fauquier County. They live close to Old Town with their three daughters, Betsy, 6, Langley, 4, and Marlowe, 8 months. Betsy and Langley attend St. James School, just a few doors away from their dad’s and grandfather’s office on Culpeper Street. Lucy is a marketing professional who works full time remotely while juggling their youngest at the same time. Ashwell admits, “I think the best thing I can say is that I married probably the closest thing to a saint. She balances corporate clients and taking care of Marlowe all the time, and that gives me the freedom to do what I’m doing with the law firm.” After working with Warrenton lawyers Robin Gulick and Mark B. Williams, Ashwell decided to go out on his own two years ago. He and his father opened Ashwell & Ashwell in December 2020. Ashwell sat down with Warrenton Lifestyle and talked to us about the venture.

We are growing at an exceptional rate. We are continuing to grow the staff, and we are also looking to hire another lawyer. We pride ourselves on having a great positive environment and I think we really want to protect that as much as we can. We’re doing smart growth. We’ve had an exceptional first year with a tremendous amount of community support and we want to keep that positive momentum.

What’s it like working with your dad?

It's fun. I don’t think he or I had any expectations going into it, and I think that the way we interact and practice together is a lot like our relationship was before. We’re friends first and father and son second. It's been pretty seamless and I think we’re both happy with the services we’ve been able to provide and the growth that’s on the horizon. I think we were really pleasantly surprised at how things really took off from the start.

What’s it like practicing in a small town?

I think it’s neat because I know most of the other lawyers. In some cases it can really help streamline things as far as getting resolutions or identifying problems more quickly which I think is beneficial to the client. I’ve got a nice working relationship with attorneys I deal with all the time. The Fauquier Bar Association has always been a very close, tight-knit group, which is good.

Improve Your Vein Appearance What’s the most difficult part of the job?

Communication is huge, and I think sometimes that gets lost in this profession. At the beginning of a case, I identify the likely problems and outcomes and I make sure I communicate this to my client. A lot of times, I may be working with a client who has never been involved in the legal system, and I always explain how it works and what to expect. Some clients are a little more savvy, so it’s a different approach, but the principle is the same: to understand and manage the client’s expectations. That’s the biggest thing I try to do, and we pride ourselves on that.

Varithena® improves vein appearance and 5 key varicose vein symptoms (HASTI™ Symptoms) • Heaviness • Throbbing • Achiness • Itching • Swelling

Tell me about a case that had an impact on you professionally.

I had an appeal once that was in the federal court of appeals for our jurisdiction. It was argued before a three judge panel, and in the end, when they wrote out their opinions, it was over a hundred pages, which is pretty exceptional for an appeal of this nature. The three judges had such different opinions — it really tuned me in to how much judges can differ. It kind of gave me some perspective, that some things can seem straightforward on paper but even the most top-notch judges will see different outcomes. It changed the way I look at cases, and how I approach them.

On your website, you have a very long list of the types of cases you take, from criminal law to land use to family law to traffic court and more. You do regular court and appeals too. Isn’t that kind of a large scope?

Sure it is. I’ve never been one to want to be pigeon-holed, or specialize in any one. Probably by volume we do mostly criminal and civil litigation, land use, and domestic relations. But our skills apply to all kinds of law. We are able to do an exceptional job in multiple courts and a multitude of practice areas.

No plans to specialize?

I am definitely averse to becoming a sort of conveyor belt practice meaning all DUIs or traffic tickets. I think it sounds incredibly dull. I enjoy taking those cases but I also enjoy many others. Nor do I think that really serves clients very well. If you do all one type of case, I think your mind gets stale and you use the same arguments, and you lose the creativity to think outside the box which can create many opportunities for your clients.

That being said, is there anything on this list you particularly enjoy?

I love a good criminal jury trial. I love advocating for the client and talking to a jury. In the last month I’ve done a two-day bench trial and a jury trial. It just kind of gets the blood flowing. I think it really kind of forces you to think on your feet. I enjoy that a lot. But I also enjoy drafting briefs for court. It goes back to my legal writing days and my English. I enjoy trying to win that intellectual chess match on paper. w

auquier native Lindsey Henderson has always had a heart for people who are struggling. So, she turned her feelings into action by becoming a critical resource for those in need in her community. “I kept asking myself, ‘How can I meet these people and help them?’ Then, our church at the time gave us permission to do a one-time free clothing drive. I, along with other volunteers, spent about 10 hours sorting clothes and getting ready for the event — we came alive and were so energized by it.” As people arrived for the big day, Henderson listened as they shared their stories. “I realized then that here they are! They’re coming to me!” she says. Many of the shoppers were living in homeless shelters, while others were staying at local motels. “There were families of five and six people living in these tiny one-room rundown motels — it just broke my heart,” says Henderson. “They were so excited and thankful to have the opportunity to fill their bags for their families; it was heartwarming.” She didn’t want it to end there. She saw how necessary these basic items were to so many people and set about creating a permanent place where they could come and shop for free. Hope Heals Community Free Store was founded in October 2019, and by January 2020, became a 5019(c)(3) nonprofit. Located in Warrenton, the

1,500-square-foot store is filled with a variety of goods. “Having a permanent space to create an inviting atmosphere was an exciting venture to join,” says Tami Doorly, who took part in the original clothing drive and has been involved with Hope Heals from the very beginning. “It’s really important to me that it’s a beautiful and well-curated shopping experience. We wanted to have a welcoming place with the feel of a boutique. I find it very inspiring and enjoyable.” Fortunately, some people Henderson knew from church committed to contributing money every month for the first two years to help pay the rent and utilities. “So going into it, we knew we at least had a couple of years of stability to obtain our nonprofit status and get the word out,” she says. “We’ve also received two grants from the Path Foundation; they’re awesome.” Henderson’s husband, Brett, to whom she’s been married for 16 years, contributes financially to Hope Heals as well through his business, The Good Reverend Kombucha Co. “Our sons, Ashton, age 15, and Tanner, 14, are currently enrolled in an online academy because they work part time in the company,” she says. The couple also has two other children, 10-year-old Piper, who attends Bradley Elementary School, and 3-year-old Charlie Ann, who attends Warrenton United Methodist Preschool. The family resides on a 20-acre farm with chickens, sheep, and gardens right in Warrenton.

I’ve neglected my mouth for years and I am scared to death of the dentist. How can you help me? We develop a rapport with our patients. Once you get to know us, your anxiety will diminish. We have medication, nitrous oxide, and administer painless injections. We are very sensitive to your feelings. We want you to be comfortable. If you need a lot of dental work, we can do one tooth at a time, or your whole mouth in as little as 1 to 2 visits. We tailor our treatment to your needs.

On an average shopping day, Hope Heals serves about 50 people (over 600 per month) and between 60 - 70 bags of clothes go out the door on those days. In order to do this, they need volunteers to help out. “No one gets paid at Hope Heals; we’re all volunteers,” says Henderson. “We’re open three days a week for shopping — Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays - but we’re in there the other days looking through every single bag that comes in the door, sorting, stocking, cleaning, and organizing. It does take a village — it’s not an easy feat to keep up with. Once the clothes are put out, they are gone in a flash.” “The hours you put in working in the store and sorting clothes is really rewarding when you see shoppers find clothing they need for a variety of purposes,” says Doorly. “It motivates us to make the store better.” Adds Janet Zimmer, another volunteer, “I believe in Lindsey's desire to bless the people in our community. She has a pure and beautiful heart when it comes to serving those in need. Her vision makes volunteering there a pleasure. We have become a closer community by being together in such a giving, open environment, looking out for and helping each other.” In addition to clothing (there’s a preference for seasonal items and a great need for men’s and boys’ clothing), the store accepts shoes, accessories, household linens — which fly off the shelves — and baby gear. For Henderson, Hope Heals is also about relationships. “The clothing is great; don’t get me wrong, I love that part, but I want to get to know these people. I want to get into their world and want to see how we can better help them above and beyond clothing and household items.” And she and her volunteers do get to know the people they are helping. One of her favorite stories is about a gentleman who came in for work boots so he could go back to work and earn money for a deposit on a rental home. “He and his girlfriend were living in one of the local motels,” says Henderson. “We watched him transition from the motel into an actual house for him and his girlfriend.” They also witnessed a single mom move out of homelessness. “She went from the Fauquier Family Shelter

into transitional housing. She would shop with us once or twice a month and we would watch her little girls, who were precious. She eventually bought her own townhouse and afterwards wrote us a check for $500. Being a part of her story was neat.” Another joyous occasion was their second annual toy drive in December. “We gave away 112 bags of toys!” she says. “It was incredible. And the amount of new toys we had was overwhelming.” The Hope Heals Community Free Store is easily accessible for everyone, thanks to a new ramp that was added on in December. “John and Andrew Gripshover with Gripshover & Sons are the father and son team who built our ramp alongside Dominion Construction Group and Groundscapes,” says Henderson. “The first night we opened after it was installed, we had a little seven-yearold wheelchair-bound girl come into the store and we showered her with stuffed animals. We were all crying!” The next project on their list involves its warehouse, a 1000-square-foot space that’s attached to the store. As it stands now, it can only be used for storage. “We’re hoping to heat and cool that space so we can sort there and actually expand the store side, because right now we’re doing both in the store,” she says. In order to accomplish this, they need funding and/ or an HVAC company willing to provide free or reduced labor and materials. She has faith it will happen. “It’s an honor and a privilege to serve the community this way,” says Henderson, with tears in her eyes. “Everyone who walks in the door is precious and wonderful and I’m just so blessed to be a part of it.” w To assist Hope Heals with its amazing mission, go to hopehealsfreestore.org to donate funds and/or volunteer.

What is an Artist? Whether with wood, clay, or life, Barbara McCulla reveals the beauty beneath BY JAYA PATIL

W

arrenton artist Barbara McCulla’s creative story starts with wood and whittling, but that’s not where it has ended up. When tracing back her journey, Barbara recalls whittling wood with the Northern Virginia Woodcarvers in Fairfax. Barbara was 17 when her mother first started taking her to the park to carve in the barn with the Woodcarvers and learn from them. In that barn, Barbara found her niche with the method of “relief ”. Relief is the subtractive technique of carving away material to reveal the desired design. It creates the illusion that the final piece has been raised from its material, although the process is physically the opposite. About ten years after moving to Warrenton, Barbara joined weekly classes at a local high school’s art studio to explore the art of pottery. “Working with dirt and turning it into something seemed miraculous to me,” she explained. With three babies at home, Barbara’s husband, Paul, and his support in encouraging her to go to class and get messy were pivotal to her joy. He recognized the importance of her taking time for herself. Although the projects she made in that class are now demoted to being the dog’s food bowl, Barbara says “[the experience] was enough that I had a feel for how to use the wheel and knew that I really liked clay.” The same way Barbara experienced turns in her journey from wood to clay, so did her life after a car accident that left her with chronic pain. The pain required big things from her, which included relinquishing her full-time work. It also affected her pottery, as working big pieces of clay or throwing (shaping pieces of clay on a pottery wheel) for a long time was no longer possible. “I couldn't

work with a lot of clay, it took too much shoulder and neck strength,” says Barbara. With the pain that became a part of her life, Barbara had to discover what she could do, what it would look like, and what value it would bring her. Then, ten years later, her son and his fiance made a request of her. For their wedding, they wanted their wedding favors to be in the form of small pots, handmade by Barbara. The two-inch pots were little, but they were anything but small in how they altered Barbara’s life. Working with smaller amounts of clay was doable, and it led her to the discovery of a new technique. “When you do 200 of something,” Barbara says, “you think, ‘what could I do a little differently here?’ I was looking for different finishes for the wedding pots, and that's how I found sgraffito.” Sgraffito is the craft of scratching or carving away layers to decorate a piece of art. Similar to relief in woodcarving, with sgraffito pottery you paint your entire piece and “pull away parts [to reveal] the theme underneath,” she explains. “There's nothing that works like pottery for me in terms of being able to manage my pain and distract me,” Barbara says of her outlet, and sgraffito is especially compatible with her comfort levels as she can carve out the designs in her lap. It wasn’t long before the shelves in her home and the homes of her loved ones filled up with her creations, and it occurred to Barbara that this thing she loved with her whole being might be something that others would appreciate and find beauty in. It was at the point of considering sharing her pottery with people outside of her circle that Barbara started posing the question to herself, “am I an artist?” It was almost like serving as an invisible gatekeeper to herself, question-

32 Warrenton Lifestyle

ing whether or not what she was doing qualified as true art. Being raised on crafts, drawn to nature, and always driven to translate what she sees into what she makes were not effective in getting her past the point of that question. Although all the factors that brought her to her current point added up to what she would identify as an artist in anyone else, it wasn’t until a friend saw the artistry in her that she could answer “yes” to her own question. Barbara’s friend, whose art expertise she trusted, took Barbara’s pieces at the time to an art gallery in Cape Charles over the summer. Barbara consented to taking the step but she couldn’t bring herself to be there in person. “There’s a great deal of emotional risk,” Barbara recalls, based on the chance that someone will not find beauty in what you have thrown yourself into. Barbara’s courage in vulnerability paid off as they put in an order for 10 pieces on the spot. Cape Charles was a transformational step for Barbara but it was still far from home. Life had closer things in store for her when a friend suggested that Jeanne-Marie Tufts might like her art for The Town Duck shop in Old Town Warrenton. After the idea was run by Jeanne-Marie, some six weeks later Barbara took the same breath that got her past the hump of sharing her pieces in Cape Charles that summer and brought what she had made to the shop. Jeanne-Marie immediately started selling Barbara’s creations. Pondering on how she would have felt if people hadn’t embraced her art, Barbara knows that she would have continued regardless, “because it’s a story that I want to tell,” she says. In consideration of those who have experienced rejection in the face of sharing something they love doing, Barbara says, “Keep going, there’s room for the quirkiness, style, and message you have to share for all of us out there.” “If you have a lot of pain,” Barbara shares, “you don't want to waste that energy on something that you don't love.” Barbara made something beautiful out of the obstacles that she encountered. It’s fitting that she connected with the style of relief all those years ago, because when parts of her life were carved away, she raised the beauty beneath. w etsy.com/shop/BMcCullaCeramics

The Bar Maiden Meagan brings the bar, you make the memories BY JAYA PATIL PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER

“T

hrow a cocktail at me and as long as it wasn't created in a frat house last year, I will know exactly what it is. My comfort level is when I'm behind a bar and I have my bar tools in front of me, that's where I'm natural,” says Meagan Shreve of Bar Maiden. Meagan is no stranger to the restaurant and hospitality business. For the last fifteen years, she has been one of Warrenton’s most familiar faces behind the bar at O’Brien’s Irish Pub - and before that at McMahon’s Irish Pub. Ultimately, the restaurant industry is her bread and butter and it is where her entrepreneurial sights reach in the future, but now, Meagan is periodically stepping out from behind the bar and running her own mobile bartending business. She opened Bar Maiden at the start of 2021, capitalizing on her longtime experience and her knowledge of the community. Opening a business at the precipice of change, where a “new normal” was bitterly familiar in everyone’s mouth, “was a massive leap of faith,” Meagan says of the jump.

The Pop-up Bar

Bar Maiden is a mobile bartending service serving the Virginia, Maryland, and Washington DC area. They provide bartending services at any occasion that calls for celebration and drinks. Well versed in classic cocktails, Bar Maiden will also work with you to develop a signature cocktail for your event, or offer a selection of Meagan’s own unique signature drinks, such as Raspberry Herb Prosecco or Cucumber Mint Gimlet.

Bar Maiden arrives at events in a SUV with a folding pop up bar in the back. “I love my pop up bar,” says Meagan. Initially, she looked into starting with a trailer, but it was too much overhead in the beginning. Instead, she found a company in North Carolina that made custom pop up bars. “In six months I had my own bar complete with my logo,” she says. “I got to customize it myself, from the placement and size of the bar wells to which side the ice was kept. It even has customizable LED lights, so I can match a party’s theme colors.” For small groups, the bar can fit inside a living room. Because it’s so portable, she can go anywhere, such as beaches or bayside. “If I had a trailer, I’d have to stay outside, or further from the gathering and people would have to walk over to me to get their drinks. With my pop up, I’m right there for the guests,” she says.

Local Ingredients

Bar Maiden uses fresh and - when possible- local herbs, fruits, and vegetables and maintains its own herb garden. Also included in their repertoire are cocktails and mocktails using products from local entrepreneurs such as Mad Magic Kombucha, Erin’s Elderberries, and even Bad Ass Pickles. “I make Bloody Marys with pickle brine from Bad Ass Pickles, and it is incredible,” Megan says. Meagan brought her drink “magic” to Warrenton’s Wizard Walk last July, and whipped up some mocktails for the kids. “It was adorable,” she says. “I used the butterfly pea syrup from Erin’s Elderberries, which is a beautiful deep dark royal blue. It virtually has no taste but it’s there for the antioxidants and health benefits. But when you happen to add it to citrus, say lemonade, it turns this gorgeous lavender purple. We showcased that that weekend because it looked like magic. I also used Mad Magic Kombucha to add fermentation, making things bubble over. And the kids thought it was magic and it was a lot of fun.

Meagan was woven into the framework of town and had the chance to offer her expertise to people who became friends across a counter. That very same network of friends were the ones telling Meagan, their favorite bartender, that she should create a business dedicated to it. “I realized I could take my long experience and put it on wheels,” she says. Her regular customers across the years were the first to call for Meagan to bartend for their milestones, and the name derives from a song a regular Irish band played for Meagan every week for years, “The Maid Behind the Bar.” “This community is full of some of the best people you'll ever meet in life,” Meagan says. “Warrenton is constantly growing, it has a pulse.” Even in a place with rich history and many residents whose local ancestry goes back generations, Meagan insists that Warrenton is anything but exclusive. “Whether you're new or old, been here or just got here, you're one of us,” she says. Ashley Rose Boutique Teen fashion entrepreneur Kayleigh Hall BY JAYA PATIL PHOTOS BY HOUSE OF AMSEL PHOTOGRAPHY

mong the things Kayleigh Hall has done recently–worked for her parents’ company, graduated from Kettle Run High School last fall–opening the brick-and-mortar shop for her flourishing boutique has been both the newest and oldest achievement in her book. Kayleigh’s dream project, Ashley Rose Boutique, is over a year old now. While her local shop has been open just shy of a few months, these feats have been on the horizon for far longer. Kayleigh has been interested in clothing for as long as she can remember. She has always been recognized for her style, a way that people were able to see who she was before she knew it herself. She identifies herself as having been quieter when she was younger. The thing about silence is that expression will still find its way to the surface. Fashion was one of Kayleigh’s forms of expression and something she remained close to growing up.

The Beginning

In early 2021, at the age of 16, Kayleigh was walking into a local boutique in a neighboring town like she might have done any day she had some free time. What she walked out with was more than a couple of shopping bags could carry. Kayleigh saw this boutique owner doing what they loved and realized it was a reflection of her own abilities. She thought to herself, “What better time to do this than right now? What better time to just go for it?” At the time, Kayleigh was surrounded by peers trading plans on college, careers, and things that felt wildly con-

crete for teenagers. She credits her mom, Kim Jenkins, for teaching her that people “don't need to know what they want to do right out of high school for the rest of their lives.” Feeling like you’re floating without the sanctity of the ground beneath your feet also offers the chance to realize what you do know, and what Kayleigh knew was that starting her own business excited her. In February of 2021, with funding from savings and help from her family, Kayleigh opened Ashley Rose Boutique online, and then moved into a brick-and-mortar location in Bealeton in December of 2021. The boutique carries US-made clothing with western bohemian aesthetic. “I just went for it and I googled my whole way through it,” Kayleigh says, “the only thing that got me through it was Google.” (If Kayleigh’s mom is reading this then sit tight, Google isn’t the only one to thank here). It was a new world for Kayleigh. Dealing with sales and suppliers and taxes was challenging. The blindness of navigating a pandemic at an already tumultuous stage in life brought her anxiety and OCD to the forefront. Kayleigh remained heavily involved in extracurricular activities

throughout, juggling ever-changing school schedules and a new business. She says, “It was a lot of late nights and early mornings that nobody sees.”

Mentors & Inspiration

Kayleigh’s mother and step-father set a point of reference for her since they were business owners themselves. Entrepreneurship has been a part of Kayleigh’s world ever since her family started their home improvement company, Genesis Home Improvement, eight years ago. While her parents love their work, one of the things Kayleigh picked up on was the flexibility that being entrepreneurs offered them. The kids felt that elasticity when their parents could stay home with them when they were sick or show up to events. Kayleigh saw how her family could be more present with the kids, thanks to the schedule that their work afforded–something she envisioned for the family she could make for herself one day. But a dream and an opportunity only get you so far, there’s tenacity in carrying dreams into the light of day (tune in, mom, this is where Google can take a back seat). Kayleigh says her mother showed her how to not only persevere but thrive. “Through all of her mistakes and challenges as a young adult, she got to know what she wanted to teach us,” Kayleigh says, “I don't think that I would be the person I am today without her.” Take that,

“I will always stand by selling plus-sized clothing in my boutique,” Kayleigh said. While sizes outside of small-large can struggle to sell, Kayleigh prioritizes the importance of having as many sizes as possible. It’s a game of delayed gratification, but the payoff comes from having customers say how excited and how good it makes them feel that there's a store that carries bigger sizes. I will not put anything in my store if I don’t love the fit, the material, and if I don't think that it would flatter everybody.” Inspiration is a cycle, as is the case when Kayleigh ignites the same passion in those who can identify with and learn from her. A pair of loyal customers, a mother and her daughter, recently came into the store to say that Kayleigh’s journey inspired the daughter to pursue her own clothing store dreams. The two now operate an online children’s boutique as part of the spark that Kayleigh kindled. While she has plenty of achievements under her belt, it is being able to “help somebody on their journey” that makes her “feel very accomplished.” What guides Kayleigh through and gives her hindsight is faith–faith in why she is here, faith in her support system, and faith in the power of her own dreams. She keeps her sights set on helping people feel confident and beautiful in what they wear. While the front-facing experience of being an entrepreneur has brought her far in the pursuit of her dreams, Kayleigh has a talent for seeing past the surface. She has realized how her boutique serves as a vessel for human connection. “I believe that my purpose on earth is to help others and share my story,” Kayleigh says, recognizing that “starting the boutique [creates] opportunities for [her] to share that.” So, look out, you might find her on a stage one day sharing the inspirational story of the little boutique that could. When the Fauquiers came to town Descendents of Francis Fauquier visit the county through the years BY JOHN T. TOLER

F

rancis Fauquier (1703-1768) was barely into his second year as lieutenant governor of the Virginia Colony when a large part of western Prince William County was carved off in 1759 to create a new county named in his honor. In addition to his regular duties, the French and Indian War was raging at the time, and Lt. Gov. Fauquier was busy establishing defenses against Indian raids and trying to recruit Virginians to supplement British expeditionary forces elsewhere in the colonies. Francis and his wife Catherine had two sons, Francis – who accompanied his parents to Virginia –and William. Both married, but Francis had no offspring, and William had a son, but no grandchildren. Fauquier died in office in 1768 after months of declining health, and it appears that he never got to visit his namesake county – with the thriving towns at Elk Run, Fauquier Courthouse and Salem. It would be many years before members of the Fauquier family line visited “their” county, and these folks were descendants of Francis’s brother William. Some members of this branch of the family had immigrated to Canada, or were born there. Because no image of Francis Fauquier was known to exist, in 1924 the Fauquier Historical Society commissioned a portrait believed to be the Lt. Governor, based on a miniature owned by Gilbert E. Fauquier of Ottawa, Canada. In 1968, it was determined that the man in the portrait was actually Francis’s son William. The following year an actual portrait of Francis Fauquier was found in England, copied and brought to Warrenton, where it hangs today in

Mimi Fauquier, eight-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wally Fauquier of Bethesda, Md., was the Queen of the Fauquier County Bicentennial in May 1959. She assisted U. S. Senator and former Virginia Governor Harry F. Byrd (left) and State Senator Robert Y. Button with the unveiling of the John Marshall statue. the lobby of the Circuit Courthouse. No record of a Fauquier visit has been found before December 1934, when it was reported in The Fauquier Democrat that Mrs. Alice Fauquier and her sons, C. C. Fauquier of Chicago and R. H. Fauquier of Baltimore, had stopped by Warrenton for a brief visit. “Through the courtesy of Town Officer ‘Pete’ Shirley, they visited the courthouse and were very interested in the portrait of their noted ancestor,” according to the report. The next known visit of a Fauquier descendant was in May 1955, when James Wallace “Wally” Fauquier (19141983), manager of the Statler Hotel in Washington, D.C., was in Warrenton to enjoy the running of the Virginia Gold Cup Races as a guest of Del. and Mrs. Tom Frost. A native of Ontario, Canada, Wally Fauquier was a grandson of Gerald E. Fauquier of Ottawa, and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was married to Mary Holmes Wood (1924-1999), and lived in Bethesda, Md. During his visit, he stopped by the courthouse and was photographed with the portrait believed to be Francis Fauquier.

Bicentennial and beyond

Del. Frost was appointed chairman of the 1959 Fauquier County Bicentennial Committee. Planning for the event began in early 1958, and Frost’s friend Wally Fauquier hosted a gathering of local and national media representatives at his Washington hotel to discuss publicity for the event. Given the historical connection, Mr. and Mrs. Fauquier and their family, including eight-yearold daughter, Mary E. “Mimi” Fauquier were invited to participate in the celebration. During the Bicentennial Parade on May 1, 1959, Mimi rode down Main Street on a float, attended by local girls,

all dressed in white. She was then crowned as the Queen of the event by U.S. Rep. Howard W. Smith, and assisted with the unveiling of the John Marshall statue in front of the County Office Building on Main Street. Years later, Mimi recalled that the family stayed at the old Warren Green Hotel, where U. S. Senators Harry F. Byrd and A. Willis Robertson were also guests. “There was no air conditioning and it was really hot,” she said. The family also visited renowned artist Wesley Dennis at his home outside Warrenton. In April 1966, Canadians Gilbert Fauquier (son of the aforementioned Gilbert E. Fauquier) and his wife visited Warrenton, also as guests of Del. and Mrs. Frost. It was reported that they were thrilled to see their name on road signs and on the Fauquier Hospital. A “little ceremonial dinner” was given in their honor at Fauquier Springs Country Club, attended by Del. and Mrs. Frost, Warrenton Mayor Byrnal Haley and businessman D. P. Wood. Del. Frost presented the couple with medals struck for the 1959 Bicentennial, signed copies of the county’s history books, and a silver plate. Unfortunately, the plate was engraved “FAQUIER COUNTY.”

‘Second cousins’ meet

In 1999, two more members of the William Fauquier branch of the family dropped by Warrenton. Tim Fauquier, of Alexandria, had been to Warrenton earlier that spring, and had lunch with his wife at the old Napoleon’s Restaurant on Waterloo Street. Intrigued by the historic Old Town, he contacted Fauquier Times-Democrat Executive Editor John Toler about writing a freelance column about international finance – his field of expertise as an auditor with the Washington, D.C. International Development Bank. While that may have led to an interesting column, Toler told him that his story as a Fauquier descendant would be of great interest. It was learned that Tim was born in Canada, and was a Canadian citizen. Plans were discussed for a future visit, and an interview. Toler had also been contacted by Julie Fauquier of Bass Lake, Calif., who operated a catering business there. She had learned about the Democrat from her neighbor Tom Saffer, whose brother, Thornton “Doc” Saffer, was a longtime resident of Middleburg.

TOP: Tim Fauquier and his cousin, Julie Fauquier examine the bust of Gov. William ‘Extra Billy’ Smith at the Old Jail Museum during a visit in April 1999. Both are descendants of William Fauquier, brother of Lt. Gov. Francis Fauquier. BOTTOM: Mimi Fauquier in 2021

Julie was born in Detroit, but noted that her father, Erskine B. Fauquier, had been born in Canada and still lived there. She would be coming to Virginia in April, and have an afternoon to spend in Warrenton. Tim Fauquier was contacted, and working through everyone’s schedules, a luncheon at Napoleon’s and a tour through town, including the Old Jail Museum, was arranged to take place on April 23. Tim and Julie were aware of their heritage and interested in family genealogy. But they had lost track of members of the last two or three generations and were not aware of each other’s existence. In addition to Toler and Fauquier Historical Society President Maxwell Harway, local people attending the luncheon included Fauquier County Board of Supervisors Chairman Larry Weeks, County Administrator Bob Lee, Warrenton Mayor and Mrs. George Fitch and Finance Director Fran Timberlake. Historians in attendance were John K. Gott, founder of the Fauquier Heritage Society in Marshall, and Jackie Lee, director of the Old Jail Museum. Among the fascinating documents Julie shared with the group was a family tree compiled in the 1920s that started with the grandparents of Lt. Gov. Francis Fauquier and went through the early 20th century. It included Julie’s grandfather, Arthur Fauquier, and Tim’s father, David Fauquier and their sibling. Mr. Gott traced the line down to Tim and Julie, and declared them second cousins. Julie also shared some old family photos. More than once, Tim remarked on the similarities he recognized between Julie’s people and his own. It was an enjoyable visit, with family relationships established and new friends made.

Encore visits in 2009, 2018

Perhaps the largest gathering of the Fauquier clan in Warrenton was in May 2009 for the County’s 250th Anniversary celebration. Remarkably, all five children of the late Wally and Mary Fauquier came to enjoy the festivities, including Mimi, from Florida, and Thomas D. W. Fauquier, his wife Sarah and sons Ryan, Timothy and Patrick from Bethesda. Also present were Helen Suzanne Fauquier and children Charles Wallace, Curtis and Jacqueline; John Walter Fauquier and his children Raleigh and Jessica; and James W. Fauquier, all residents of Wilmington, NC. The group was recognized, and enjoyed the 250th Anniversary festivities from the steps of the General District Courthouse. Mimi graduated from Walt Whitman High School in Bethesda in 1969, and earned a BS degree in Dental Hygiene from West Virginia University. While there, she met her husband, Dr. Frank Murray, DDS, then a medical student. The couple moved to Florida in 1975, where Frank opened the family dental practice where Mimi worked for many years. They had three children, Tony, Anne and Craig, who later took over the practice. Now fully retired, Mimi lives in Orlando and travels extensively. While on a motor trip through the Shenandoah Valley in 2018, Mimi stopped by Warrenton once again, and visited the Old Jail Museum – 59 years after reigning there as Bicentennial Queen. w

Great Beer with an Environmental Mission Old Bust Head Brewing Company implements carbon capture technology

B

eer lovers and environmental conservationists in Fauquier County and the surrounding areas appreciate Old Bust Head Brewing Company’s libations and sustainable mission. The solar-powered, geothermal microbrewery in Vint Hill sports forty eight taps that serve up a variety of ales and lagers from pilsners to porters and beyond, and offer additional beverages such as hard seltzers and hard sodas. Old Bust Head Brewing is among the first craft breweries in the country and the first brewery in Virginia to implement carbon capture technology. This technology allows brewers to capture waste carbon dioxide (CO2) produced during fermentation and reuse it in other stages of the brewing process where CO2 is required. This new technology helps craft brewers to keep CO2 emissions out of the atmosphere while creating independence from outside supply chains. “Old Bust Head is motivated by a desire to make life both rich and sustainable. Recaptured CO2 is not only better for the planet, it makes better beer, so that’s a winwin,” says Old Bust Head co-owner Julie Broaddus. “CO2 is a major cost of production—in the ballpark of electric, water and sewer, and natural gas. This investment will reduce or eliminate our need to purchase outside CO2, but most importantly, like our solar array and geothermal system, it takes advantage of an opportunity to reduce our carbon footprint.” The scientific community has modeled the need for the global businesses to capture, reuse, store or convert billions of metric tons of CO2 to mitigate climate change. Carbon capture has long been reserved for large-scale brewers with millions of dollars to spare. Earthly Labs has miniaturized the technology to make it affordable and achievable for small businesses. This plug-and-play unit, called CiCi®, will enable Old Bust Head to capture more than 1,500 trees worth of waste CO2 from the brewing process each year.

“Old Bust Head offers an example of how small businesses can tackle the climate change challenge with practical solutions that deliver a compelling payback,” says Earthly Labs CEO Amy George. “We are inspired by all the ways Old Bust Head is meeting their commitment to their community and the environment, making great beer, creating jobs, using both solar and geothermal, and now recycling CO2. It is great to see a Virginia brewery among sustainability leaders in the country.” w

Craving the taste of the Emerald Isle on St. Pat’s? Here’s a couple of yummy ways to put a little Irish in your day. Not traditional but a fun taste of Erin nonetheless… and that’s no blarney!

Irish Nachos Corned beef and cabbage with potatoes, chips, and hot melt-y cheese. What’s not to love? Go over the top and use Irish butter and Irish cheddar cheese, and serve right from the pan with icy cold green beer for an American tweak. SERVES 2 TO 4 INGREDIENTS

2 large potatoes, cooked and sliced into ¼ inch thick rounds 3 Tablespoons butter (divided) 2 cups shredded fresh cabbage 4 to 6 slices deli corned beef (chopped – about 1 cup) 1 small onion (chopped – about ½ cup) 1 small bell pepper (chopped – about ½ cup) ½ cup cheddar cheese (shredded) ½ cup ranch dip or sour cream ½ (6 oz.) pouch French fried onion rings ½ (13 oz.) bag tortilla chips 2 cups homemade Cheez Wiz (or the store-bought kind) Optional garnish – fresh parsley

wine&dine

DIRECTIONS

1.

Irish Nachos and Green Beer Put a little Irish in your day!

Lightly coat a 12-inch skillet with cooking spray. Melt 1 tablespoon butter in the skillet. Add the cabbage and corned beef. Cook, stirring, to soften the cabbage – about 3 minutes. Remove from skillet. 2. Melt the remaining 2 tablespoons of butter in the same skillet. Add the potatoes, onions and bell pepper. Cook without stirring, until the potatoes are light brown on one side then flip them over and brown on the other side. Return the corned beef mixture to the pan spreading it over the potatoes. 3. Sprinkle the cheddar cheese over everything then dollop with the ranch dip (or sour cream). Cover skillet and heat on medium until the cheese melts - 3 to 5 minutes. 4. Remove the cover and top with the onion rings and tortilla chips. Pour the hot cheese sauce over all. Sprinkle with parsley, if desired. Serve immediately.

Tips Not into cabbage?

Sub any frozen, thawed and drained chopped green like collards or spinach. Well drained, canned sauerkraut is great, too.

Corned beef not you?

Sub in any cooked meat, sausage, fish or vegetarian/vegan alternative you prefer or omit the meat altogether.

Homemade Cheez Wiz Once a joke with traditional cheese lovers, Chez Wiz has racked up a devoted cult following that’s given the world such culinary jewels as cheese steaks, nachos, and the desperately-craveable chili cheese fries. Without any gunky preservatives or strange sounding ingredients, this yummy copycat recipe keeps about 5 days in the fridge and costs only a fraction of the store bought kind. Green Colored Beer While not very popular in Ireland, green colored beer flows like water at every Irish pub in the US on St. Patrick’s Day. It doesn’t taste any different than regular beer but some swear the “luck of the Irish” makes it taste luckier. Whether it’s luckier or not, green beer is an American tradition that celebrates Ireland’s iconic national color. Thomas Hayes Curtin, an Irish-American physician living in New York City, is credited with dreaming up green beer for a St. Patrick’s Day gala he was organizing in 1914. He thought it would make the event extra festive. He was right! The green beer was such a crowd pleaser that it instantly became a St. Patrick’s Day tradition. There’s no special recipe for making green beer and it requires no bartending skills. All you do is add a drop or two of green food coloring to a light-colored beer. So raise your glass to Ireland and St. Patrick on his day! Sláinte!! w

It’s St. Patrick’s Day! Celebrate at these local pubs and bakeries BY BETH LUNA

H

ey, everyone’s Irish on St. Patrick’s Day, right? This year, we’ll be sipping our green beer on Thursday, March 17, so to put you in the mood and arm you with some ideas, we share our list of hot spots and bakeries here. Though it’s thought to be an American-made legend, you may want to wear green on March 17, which is thought to make you invisible to the leprechauns (who pinch those not wearing green). Also, don’t forget to check out the Manassas St. Patrick’s Day Parade on March 12; drop in at visitmanassas.org for details.

Molly’s Irish Pub

36 Main St, Warrenton | mollysirishpub.com (540) 349-5300 One of Old Town Warrenton’s favorite hot spots Molly’s Irish Pub will open early for St. Patrick's Day, serving Irish breakfast and their special Paddy's Day menu all day. “This is our 20th St. Patrick's Day!” said owner Casey Ward. “We'll have some limited edition swag available as well.” Visit their website for information on the annual Molly’s Wearin’ of the Green 5k to benefit wounded warriors.

O’Brien’s Irish Pub

380 Broadview Ave, Warrenton | obriensirishpubva.com (540) 359-6937 Amanda and Jerry O’Brien of Warrenton’s O’Brien’s Irish Pub are throwing a four-day, all weekend kind of party for St. Patrick’s Day. “We’ll have Irish dancers plus live music every day featuring 3 bands – Paul Cray from New York, local group The Butternotes, and Sullark, a duo from Jerry’s hometown,” said Amanda. “We’ll offer Irish dance lessons – the 1-2-3’s, which encompass the Irish dance basics – anyone can join in!” Food specials, kids activities, and plans to take the party outside if possible are all on the table. “Come early – we’ll have kegs and eggs starting at 9 a.m.” added Jerry, who hails from Sneem County Kerry, Ireland, said. “And we’ll be open late!”

Preston's Pub

McNamara. “That will be back in March along with our Irish Egg rolls.” The pub has partnered with Bushmills to feature a pint of Guinness and a shot of Bushmills for $12, along with a Bushmills green tea shot for $6. They plan to have the green Bud Light bottles back, and the Boyle School of Irish Dance will be there the Saturday before at 5:30 p.m. and on St. Paddy’s day at 8 p.m. “We look forward to this every year and always have a great time,” said Sean. “ I’m usually running around like a mad man, but it’s the best!”
