Warrenton Hunt’s Point to Point Races
An Annual Rite of Spring
Have you ever watched a horse race over jumps? Imagine seeing racehorses from just a few feet away at their pre-race check in, watch them from a hillside as they navigate the jumps at a gallop, and experience the thrill as they thunder over the finish line from just a few yards away. From that vantage point, spectators can really get a sense of the speed, power, and beauty of the horses, the skill of the jockeys, and the way the two become one.
Living in Virginia, almost everyone has heard of the Gold Cup, the famous steeplechase held at Great Meadow. It’s like the super bowl of steeplechase rac ing. It’s huge, it’s exciting, it’s busy, it’s loud, and there are lots of really dressed-up people.
For a different vibe, consider going to a Point to Point. What’s the difference? Think of Point to Points like the minors in baseball. They are smaller races for less experienced horses as they train and condition for the bigger steeplechase races.
What does that mean for spectators? Point to Points are a less crowded, less formal, way to experience the thrill of horses racing over fences in a low-key, more intimate atmosphere. The best thing is that you can see much better and get closer to the horses and jockeys.
Local hunt clubs host Point to Point Races most weekends throughout the Spring season, which can be a great way to spend the day in the country and start learning what racing over fences is all about. Warrenton Hunt’s Point to Point, featuring up to ten races (including a sidesaddle race), will take place on March 18 at their longtime traditional location, the Airlie racecourse in Warrenton.
More than horses at the Warrenton Hunt Point to Point: Make a day of it
Kids will be thrilled with seeing the horses and the races, and they can also enjoy the complimentary Kids Zone with activities like coloring and face painting. Maybe they’ll get a little excited and need to blow off some steam? Set them loose to run and jump on the miniature kids’ racecourse. And both kids and adults will enjoy strolling through vendor village featuring a variety of local shops and artisans.
A brief history of racing over fences
Steeplechase races started informally in the early 18th century in England as a way for horse owners to exercise their horses. Since the most visible landmarks over long distances were church steeples, they became the start and finish lines. The horses and riders would race across the countryside jumping over brush, ditches, natural obstacles, and stone walls. Today, both steeplechases and Point to Point races feature the same sort of natural obstacles.
Know
What to wear
before you go:
Horse races of all types are known for fancy hats and outfits, so if you want to dress up, go for it. But at Point to Points, pretty much anything goes, from jeans on up. It’s much more important to dress for the weather. Since the races are held in an open field, the ground may be uneven or muddy. Boots are suggested – no high heels here!
What to eat
Again, anything goes. You’ll definitely get hungry, but you can do anything from bringing a peanut butter and jelly picnic to calling a caterer. Divine Swine food truck and El Jefe Street Eats food truck will also be on site for a quick bite.
What to bring
Binoculars. The horses cover quite a distance, so if you want to follow them from start to finish, you’ll need them. What not to bring Umbrellas. Glass. Dogs. Tickets
Different ticket options are available, from the $20/vehicle general admission pass (you will have to walk quite a ways carrying your chairs and picnic), to parking passes closer to the action where you can stay by your parked car to tailgate and watch.

Carried To Full Term helps to put women on a path to a better life
BY GLENDA C. BOOTH PHOTOS COURTESY OF CARRIED TO FULL TERM
When a homeless 21-year-old mother-to-be arrived at Carried To Full Term’s Haymarket House, she began to cry when she was shown her room. “This is my room?” she asked incredulously, adding, “I’ve never had my own bed or room before.”
She had thought she was going to a shelter. But Carried To Full Term’s Haymarket House is a special place. The brainchild of Frances Robin, it is a haven for homeless pregnant women that provides so much more than mere shelter, it provides a home, and change.
The Beginning
The genesis of the idea occurred when Robin was volunteering at a Manassas women’s crisis center. She was troubled all too often by seeing women coming in for pregnancy tests or maternity supplies and learning that they were living in the woods, on the streets, or sleeping on borrowed sofas – homeless.
While the women needed medical care, their need for housing was startling, so Robin decided to do something. In 2012, she opened her basement to homeless, pregnant women and formed the organization Carried To Full Term. Today, the organization provides longterm housing to pregnant and homeless women at their Haymarket House.
The Residents
There are many circumstances and bumps in life that lead women to the home, like loss of income, physical and psychological abuse, relocation, divorce, abandonment, and homelessness. Homelessness usually exacerbates their problems and can lead to depression, unemployment, and other conditions that make the path to economic stability and housing daunting.
The residents’ stories are compelling. These are women in crisis, with no support and nowhere to go.
One pregnant woman was walking along a highway on a cold November day. A passerby saw her in distress and called Carried To Full Term. Another homeless woman had an abusive partner. Her friends scraped up money for transportation and the woman traveled to Virginia from Washington State and found support at Carried To Full Term.

How You Can Help
Carried To Full Term is a non-profit, 501(c) (3) organization that is funded primarily by donations from individuals, churches, groups, and local businesses.
To support the organization by giving or volunteering, contact: Carried To Full Term carriedtofullterm.org P.O. Box 238, Haymarket, VA 20168 carriedtofullterm@gmail.com 571-261-2838.
Purpose and Method
Carried To Full Term’s overall position is that every baby deserves a home, and therefore their goal is to transform the lives of mothers by helping them to become self-sufficient and independent, enabling them to provide that for their children. To that end, a case manager and mentor work individually with each woman. While there, the mothers take classes in parenting, workforce preparation, and financial management, and also have the opportunity to earn a high school diploma. The home provides childcare until the children are in other, off-site programs, and CTFT provides transportation to medical appointments and jobs. Volunteers help in many ways, including mentoring, driving, and providing baby supplies.
Robin describes one especially difficult resident who was hostile and yelled angrily at the staff. “I don’t know what to do with these emotions,” the woman said. The case manager sat patiently with her, listened intently, and said, “We understand. We’re here to help you step by step.” And they did.
Carried To Full Term is not affiliated with any one religious denomination and does not exclude any faith. Robin explains, “I do believe it’s important to honor our faith and to serve each other. The founding is rooted in that belief. Our love of our residents comes through in the way we serve them. We maintain our relationships with our residents after they graduate from the program. That's one of the beautiful features of our mentoring program; teaching residents the value of building healthy relationships."
Today
Today, CTFT’s Haymarket House is going strong; it can house six mothers at a time, and the moms and their children can stay up to two years. Since the beginning in 2012, Robin, and then Haymarket House, has welcomed 66 women and helped many more. In 2022, they received 91 inquiries about housing.
And the pregnant woman found on the highway? She graduated from Carried To Full Term after completing the two-year program and has been living independently since that time. She works full-time in a senior manager role with a construction company. Her daughter, who was born in the program, started kindergarten this year. Occasionally, she visits the residents to assist new moms. Her next goal is to purchase a home. L

Paragon Philharmonia takes professional classical musicians out of the concert halls and into the Fauquier County community
BY WHITNEY PANDIL-EATON PHOTOS COURTESY OF PARAGON PHILHARMONIA/SHANNON FLACK
They’ve performed on tour in Germany, conducted at the Sydney Opera House in Australia, and have been members of some of the most prestigious orchestra groups in the United States. But for the last year dozens of these impressive professional musicians have gathered as members of Paragon Philharmonia Ensemble-in-Residence at Grace Episcopal Church in The Plains to share their love of classical music with Fauquier County residents.
Founders say the nonprofit is unlike other orchestra
Paragon Philharmonia’s spring performance will take place on Sunday, April 23 at Buchanan Hall in Upperville. It will feature orchestral pieces from Sergei Prokofiev, Felix Mendelssohn, Ludwig van Beethoven, and more.

organizations. “We are stretching the idea of what an orchestra can be,” said Stephanie Sims Flack, violinist, teacher, and president of Paragon’s board of directors. “We like to experiment with ways to do the old style but in fresh ways.”
Those experiments include a focus on featuring underrepresented composers, non-traditional pieces, and music from areas outside of Europe, Miriam Burns, artistic director and conductor for Paragon, said. The organization routinely collaborates with other local musicians and vocalists as well as area youth musical groups.
Burns said the idea for the group came after the pandemic forced the Tyson McLean Orchestra into bankruptcy. “Musicians want to perform and communicate through music,” she said, adding that the group of approximately 50 members was born out of the collaboration of fellow co-founders who now sit on the board of directors.
Since their initial concert in October 2021, the group has held several different programs at Grace Episcopal Church in The Plains, which has been a hub for the arts in the county for more than two decades. The group’s membership size has allowed the organization to be flexible in its musical offerings from a small string quartet to a full orchestra and church choir.
Paragon’s focus on connecting with its audience is evident through its intimate performances and post-concert receptions where musicians mingle with attendees.
“We are passionate about connecting with the audience and engaging with people,” Flack said. “Playing [in close proximity to attendees] at the church is a really cool experience you don’t get at a normal music venue.”
Flack said the shorter programs were designed to give new concertgoers a taste of classical music while also providing historical context for the pieces performed.
John Ward, Paragon co-founder, board member, and bassoonist, said he especially likes the post-concert reception events. “I haven’t done a lot of gigs where you get to interact with an audience like that,” he said. “It really re-enforces the partnership between musicians and the audience.”
Ken Garrett, who is an active member of Grace Episcopal Church and sits on many of its committees, said Paragon fits in seamlessly with the church’s artistic and community outreach objectives. “They bring an extra level of music and art to the community,” he said. “I especially love how they are encouraging young people to get in the (music) game.”
Although very much at home at Grace Church, Paragon Philharmonia members are looking for additional venues and opportunities in the area to expand their mission outreach in the future.
“There’s been a lot of excitement and enthusiasm so far,” Burns said. "We are hoping to attract more people from the D.C. area to come out here, go antiquing, go out to one of the great local restaurants here, and come enjoy the show.” L

At Warrenton Ballet Center, Ariana Myers welcomes all levels of dancers, from beginner to pre-professional
BY AMIE BOWMAN
After an illustrious beginning in the world of professional ballet, Winchester native Ariana Myers was looking to come home. She said, “I knew what I wanted. I wanted to work in a school in which I could see the same students year after year. I wanted to see them grow and watch their progress.” Myers was also searching for a place that did not offer dancers in the area an opportunity to learn ballet using the Vaganova method. Warrenton was the perfect spot. “I fell in love with the town of Warrenton,” Myers said, “People are so nice here, and I wanted to be a part of this community. People still talk to each other here. That is so rare.”
What is the Vaganova Method?
When talking to Myers, what immediately shines through is her passion for the type of ballet that is both beautiful to the observer and safe for the dancer. Myers says the Vaganova method meets both of these conditions. Using the body’s natural and instinctive ways of moving, the Vaganova technique adds elegance to a dancer’s motion and positioning. Just as importantly, because this form of ballet is more intuitive and works with the body’s natural anatomical structure, the dancer is less likely to be injured. Vaganova also opens the world of ballet to people without the stereotypical perfect dancer’s body. “I did not have a perfect ballet body when I started,” Myers remembered. “[Using the Vaganova technique] I was able to strengthen my body so that I could perform the steps correctly.” That experience became an important influence on Myers’ view of dancer development.
BY TAMMIE PERKINS
From professional performances to education
Injury has been an important part of Myers’ personal ballet journey. After starting ballet at age 6, she switched studios at age 8 to begin her serious ballet training. After years of intensive ballet, at age 16 Myers moved to boarding school at the Kirov Academy in Washington D.C. to train for a career in a professional ballet company. A career-ending injury while she was in high school changed the course of her life.
After her injury, a mentor encouraged Myers to remain in the world of ballet and switch her focus from performance to teaching. Myers agreed and stayed at the Kirov Academy an additional year to earn her teaching certificate. After teaching in multiple schools in Virginia, Texas, and Michigan, Myers knew what she wanted to do: provide young dancers the opportunity to train intensively for a professional career, as she did at ballet boarding school, but also enabling them to stay with their families locally.

With that vision in mind, she opened the Warrenton Ballet Center (WBC) in August 2022.
Opportunities for all dancers
Myers’ focus is on creating a warm and nurturing environment for everyone who comes into the WBC. “We want people to be comfortable walking into a ballet studio,” Myers explained. Located on Blackwell Road in Warrenton, the WBC offers multiple programs for dancers with a wide range of experiences and abilities.
School year ballet program. The Center’s 10-month school year ballet curriculum is focused on providing students with a well-rounded introduction to dance and helping them find the joy and benefits of ballet. This program is open to anyone ages 4 and older who has an interest in dance. Individuals enrolled in the academy can dance up to 9 to 12 hours per week, and in December perform in a dance showcase for their family and friends.
Summer Camps. In addition to their school year program, WBC offers a variety of summer options for dance training for new and returning students. For 4–7 year olds, WBC offers multiple summer camps themed to follow storybook ballets. These programs are a fun and interactive way for students to connect with popular story ballets and learn the foundational steps in the Vaganova technique.
Summer Ballet Intensives. For older and more experienced dancers ages 8–22, WBC offers intermediate and advanced summer intensive programs where students receive further training in Vaganova, get in shape for the new school year, and be evaluated by the artistic director and receive a level placement before the school year begins.
Training the next generation of professional ballet dancers. The Center also offers a pre-professional dance program intended for experienced dancers looking to pursue a position with a professional ballet company. The program is by invitation or audition only and provides a comprehensive ballet education in the Vaganova technique. “The pre-professional program is intended to not only teach
ballet but also to prepare students to work in a professional ballet company,” Myers explained. “This involves teaching skills such as self-sufficiency, self-motivation, professionalism, and responsibility.” Students in the pre-professional program dance for a minimum of 20 hours per week, learning what Myers learned at the Kirov Academy without the expense of attending boarding school in the city. Myers’ vision is to use her contacts in the professional dance world to bring in world-class guest teachers for her pre-professional students and ultimately to have the Warrenton Ballet Center stage full ballet productions for the community.
Building Community Partnerships
Building relationships in Fauquier county is extremely important to Myers, who ranks joining the Fauquier Chamber of Commerce as one the best decisions she has ever made. “I want to do things to bring the community together,” Myers explained. To that end, WBC is partnering with other local movement and dance-related businesses in Fauquier County to provide opportunities for people to come into the studio. As the first of these partnerships, WBC is hosting five yoga workshops for ages 12 and up with Unyong Kim of Stress Burner Yoga —in March, April, and May of 2023. Myers sees these workshops as serving an underserved population: mothers with older daughters. “There are a lot of things for moms and young daughters to do together, but not much for moms with older daughters,” she says. The goal is for these yoga sessions to be fun, healthy, relaxing activities that create opportunities for relationship building and build people’s comfort with walking into a ballet studio. L

Down to a Consign Art
Local mom hosts Warrenton’s 41st semi annual Kids Haven consignment sale
BY KARA THORPE | PHOTOS COURTESY OF ANGELA SAIN
Angela Sain of Culpeper had always enjoyed shopping second-hand for her three daughters but was frustrated with the offerings at traditional thrift stores. She found herself looking at the same limited selection of items each time she shopped. It was a business idea in the making for the stay-at-home mom.
She realized that by running a kids consignment sale in a pop-up shop format — for a limited time, twice a year — she would be able to offer a wider selection of items while keeping operating costs low. The sales would appeal to parents on a budget who were switching out their children’s seasonal wardrobes in the Spring and Fall. So in 2001 she took out a small business loan and planned the first Kids Haven consignment sale.
“I did a ton of newspaper ads and tried to get families interested in consigning their children’s outgrown items, making some money while they cleaned out their closets and then also getting new clothing they
needed at discounted prices” Sain said. She didn’t make enough money on the first sale to cover the costs and worried she had made a huge mistake. She decided to give it one more try and ended up doubling the number of consignors for the second sale. The sale kept growing in size until she reached an astounding 342 consignors and 36,374 items in 2014. The rest, as they say, is history.
BY CASSANDRA BROWN
There have been a few canceled sales along the way due to lack of retail space and of course COVID, but Sain has been able to keep the business going strong for 22 years.
How it Works
The process for each Kids Haven sale starts by finding a suitable retail space, ideally in Warrenton where the majority of her consignor base resides. “Finding appropriate retail spaces for hosting the Kids Haven sales has always been the most challenging aspect of our business model,” said Sain. Once rental space is secured, the dates of the sale are determined and publicized.
Consignors are then asked to go to the Kids Haven website to register and request their labels, which are mailed to their home free of charge. Each consignor prices and labels all of their own items.
About a month before the sale is scheduled to open, all the equipment needed to run the sale is moved into the leased retail space. At

Remarkable Growth!
The very first Kids Haven sale in September 2001 had 36 consignors and roughly 2,000 items.
A photo from 2014, the largest Kids Haven sale to-date. The sale featured 36,374 items from 342 consignors. 71% of the inventory was sold, 75% of it at full price. At the end of that sale 2,217 items were donated valued at $9,788.
that point Kids Haven begins the weeks-long process of receiving, sorting, and organizing all of the consignment items.
“Our Grand Opening is held on a Saturday, followed by 10 days of public shopping which includes five Discount Days when most items are discounted between 10% and 50% off. After the 50% off sale, Kids Haven closes so our volunteers can reorganize whatever is left to make it easy for consignors to retrieve any items they want back,” Sain said.
After consignors have retrieved their wanted items, everything still in the store is either sold at 75% off or donated to various local charitable organizations. Donations have gone to groups like Vint Hill Transitional Housing, Fauquier Family Shelter, FISH, Care Net Pregnancy Crisis Center, Hope Heals, Community Touch, and various foster and Head Start families.
“It is especially satisfying that Kids Haven has been able to support so many deserving families and children’s organizations through
the generous donations from our consignors at the end of the sale,” Sain said. A Family (and Volunteer) Affair
Perfecting the format for Kids Haven has been a family affair. Early on, Sain’s parents started making the trip down from Pennsylvania for each sale to help out, watching the kids while Sain worked the sale and working at the sale themselves. Her father even designed the software system used for Kids

Creating Her Own Success
Fauquier County native and college student Bailey Moriarty places fifth overall in the Student Riding Nation’s Cup World Finals in Belgium.
BY JAMES JARVIS
Ever since she was 5 years old, Bailey Moriarty has dedicated her life to her horsemanship. With an extensive background in equitation and jumping, she competes at the national collegiate level against some of the top college student riders in the country.
While the young Moriarty is a well-traveled and wellknown rider within the Northern Virginia equestrian community, she had yet to compete internationally until a few months ago.
Moriarty said she never imagined she would be representing her country at the Association Internationales des Etudiant Cavalieres (World University Equestrian Federation) Student Riding Nation’s Cup World Finals in Bilzen, Belgium at the age of 19.
On a plane
On Dec. 26, 2022, Moriarty received a phone call from her sister Sydney, 22, who has also competed internationally, about a vacancy on the U.S. Student Riding team, which was short a member because of an illness. The only catch? She had to be in Belgium the very next day, before the competition started on the 28th. She sent in her qualifying credentials, was accepted, and was on a plane the next day.
The AIEC coordinates college and university level equestrian competitions at the international level. “The only thing I could think of comparing it to is the college version of the Olympics,” Moriarty said. “It gave me the international stage and set my name in stone for a lot of people.”
Moriarty said being on an international team didn’t scare her because she had siblings who also competed internationally; in addition to Sydney, her brother Luke played for the Panama National Lacrosse Team.
Horse crazy from a young age
Moriarty, a Fauquier native and second-year nursing student at Randolph Macon College in Ashland, said she

discovered her love for riding at a young age and described herself as having “grown up in a barn.”
“It started as an after-school kind of thing, and it grew from there,” Moriarty said. “I first rode at Misty Brae Farm in Aldie where I learned how to do everything from the beginning, from riding to caring for horses.” Moriarty received further coaching from Kristy Willwerth at Picturesque Farm and Paige Cade at Country Fox Farm. The family now lives on a farmette near Vint Hill.
But even with her level of experience, Moriarty said the competition was fierce, and many of the riders she faced were older, more experienced, and the majority of them were male.
“There were riders there that had been riding top horses their whole life,” Moriarty said. “It's very difficult to match that level.”
Making her own way
“The horse world is filled with horses of all shapes and sizes and price ranges,” Moriarty’s mother Holly said. Moriarty grew up competing in hunt seat equitation where some of the riders she was competing against were on $200,000 horses.
Holly made sure that her daughter always had horses to ride while she was growing up, but they were on the cheaper end of the spectrum and therefore less experienced. Her only option was to create her own success.
“She would purchase and ride horses that often came with something that needed to be polished and would work with the horses and help them overcome their difficulty to realize their full potential,” Holly said.
This extensive experience gained by training her horses herself was most likely the reason she found success at this particular competition.
A different kind of competition
The Student Riding competitions are vastly different from most horse sports where horses and riders train together as a team. Moriarty noted what’s challenging about the Nation’s Cup World Finals is the rider and the horse never meet until the day of the event.
“You don't know a lot about the horse before drawing it out of the hat, and so you have to be able to get on any horse and ride,” Moriarty said.
The good news is all the other riders are in the same position. Nevertheless, Moriarty said it's challenging having only five minutes to get to know a horse and warm up with it before entering the ring.
“I’ve never seen any of these horses before and never heard of any of these horses before. One of the horses I rode, the owner looked at me and said, ‘this horse is 5 years old, and this is all new to him,’” Moriarty said. “Just because you're at the top horse show doesn't mean you get perfect horses.”
Moriarty said the rationale behind having everyone ride an unknown horse is so the judges can determine whether the rider can handle a difficult horse.
Success
Out of the 18 riders representing eight countries she competed against in the silver league, Moriarty ended up placing 5th in Dressage, 7th in Show Jumping, and 5th place overall.
The other two members of her team finished 14th and 17th in Show Jumping and 11th and 13th in Dressage, finishing overall at 14th and 17th.
Although Moriarty said she plans to continue on her path to becoming a nurse, she intends to keep riding and competing in 2023.
“Being able to go overseas and compete has given me a leg up,” she said. “I've also been able to ride more horses. I've gotten to learn how to ride different types of horses. But college-wise, it doesn't change a whole lot for me… Coming out of school, I want to breed horses and continue riding as well as being a nurse.” L

Confidence is the New Black Belt
Grandmaster Ron Jenkins of Karate Sports Academy encourages a balance between personal growth and belt statuses with his martial arts students
BY JENNIFER WALDERA PHOTOS BY LUKE CHRISTOPHER
In 1979, Ron Jenkins started the first martial arts program in Warrenton through the Fauquier County Department of Parks and Recreation then pivoted in 1986 to open Karate Sports Academy, which he owns and runs with his wife Master Carolyn Jenkins. Forty-three years after he began instructing in Warrenton, Grandmaster Jenkins continues to teach martial arts but he is also a role model in the community.
“He has taught, literally, generations of area families, in some cases, three generations of the same family. And it is more than just teaching martial arts. It is imbuing both self-confidence and humility. It is about being the best person you can be, not just the best martial artist that you can be. There are, literally, thousands of people in our community whose lives have been positively impacted by Grandmaster Jenkins and his family,” says Bill Milano, an instructor at Karate Sports Academy.
Born and raised in Warrenton, Jenkins began practicing martial arts around age 15. He says he enjoyed the individuality of martial arts.
“I come from a large family and I wanted to do something that I enjoyed. I didn’t like the team thing — it wasn’t me. I wanted to do something that depended on me.”
Eventually, Jenkins moved to Springfield where he taught under one of his instructors. However, it wasn’t long before his mother inspired him to return to Warrenton, encouraging him to teach martial arts in his own community.
“I was hesitant but I came back. It was hard in the 70s for a person of color to get something started here. I started with Parks and Rec and it was one of the top programs.”
After starting Karate Sports Academy,

Jenkins and his students became involved in larger-scale competitions and his family joined in the journey as well.
“Since then, I’ve had a lot of good things happen here. My wife and my kids have helped me run the school over the years. I also coached the DKT Force One world champion martial arts team for 10 years.”
Jenkins says that he, his wife, and kids have each competed and earned the title of world champion in their respective age divisions. Teams that he has coached, with members hand-picked from across the country, have won the title as well.
While Jenkins has seen success in his efforts to build his business as well as through competition, it is others’ growth that inspires his dedication to teaching and to Karate Sports Academy.
“We are mentors for a lot of children who have grown up in Fauquier. Being an instructor, a part of the community, and watching children grow and become amazing, and achieve goals, that’s amazing. That’s a highlight.”
He’s also particularly proud of his family’s achievements, saying “One of my favorite things that really excited me was watching my wife achieve her black belt — and my kids, too. Also watching my family achieve other goals, like seeing my daughter go to college and my son become a full time stuntman. I just really enjoy seeing my family come together and make something out of it — and watching other families do that too.”
Jenkins also notes that the growth he sees in students is not only in achieving belts (which he stresses it’s important to earn,
not be given), but in the type of personal growth that individuals can achieve through practicing martial arts.
“Confidence is one of the key things in life and sometimes martial arts helps to develop that. It helps people to say: I may not be doing as well as other people, but I’m improving. And that’s important.”
Jenkins also focuses on other important life skills, particularly self-defense. He notes how crucial it is for people to know what to do when they’re in a situation when they need help and he particularly helps children to understand the importance of staying close to their parents as well as what to do when they’re separated.
Karate Sports Academy is also designed to be a place of inclusiveness and Jenkins welcomes anyone who wants to be a part of it. Instructor Bill Milano believes Jenkins

has expertly achieved that environment.
“Grandmaster Ron Jenkins doesn’t just preach inclusiveness — he has lived it his entire life. Long before inclusiveness was even a word in our collective vocabulary, his school welcomed all colors, creeds, and genders. It is a place where all are welcome, and all have a place where they can thrive.”
Indeed, that’s exactly the environment that Jenkins has aspired to create. He recalls that when he first began practicing martial arts there were Grandmasters or instructors who were “hard core” and tried to portray an image of being “tough guys.”
“I never wanted that here. When you walk through the door I want the energy of it being a place you want to be. I want people to feel comfortable. In order for you to achieve goals you can’t have a lot of stress behind it. When they walk through the doors I want it to be a friendly atmosphere.”
Jenkins works hard to create that atmosphere. He and his wife both mentor children in the Academy helping them with struggles that go beyond sports to academics, achieving goals, and general life skills.
“I’m not a grandmaster whose head is in the clouds, I’m a reachable person, I want people to be able to talk to me. I show
interest in any student who comes through the door and I try to live and be an example to people for people who need someone to look up to. This is an open door school, we don’t just cater to people who do sports and all. No matter what you’re going through, we’ll help.”
As for the future of Karate Sports Academy, Jenkins says they have no plans for expansions (though they did have several schools in the past). But he does intend to continue teaching and welcoming students into the Academy.
“Hopefully we’ll turn some more into world champions, but just watching these people, old and young, achieve their belts and knowing that I helped them earn that, that’s what I love. The doors are always open — people are always welcome.” L

Seeking Students to Transform the World
Ethnos College empowers graduates for positive change
BY AMIE BOWMAN AND PAM KAMPHUIS
To say Dr. T. Tyronne Champion, founder of and president of Ethnos College, is enthusiastic about offering opportunities for higher education in a Christian environment would be a major understatement. He is beyond thrilled.
The college, now in its second semester, is based in Fauquier County and its online classes are accessible worldwide.
“I wanted to do something impactful beyond Fauquier and the surrounding counties,” Champion said.
“I wanted to do something impactful in Fauquier County, the U.S., and internationally,” Champion said.
Champion, who is well-known locally for his Community Touch outreach organization, did not seek higher education for himself until the age of 38. Making up for lost time, he now holds, among other qualifications, an undergraduate degree in business and a doctorate in Christian education.
He has come to view his education, combined with extensive experience in nonprofit and philanthropic work, as instrumental to God’s call in his life: empowering others to fulfill their purpose.
He is looking for students who want to transform the world.
The educational opportunities
While the academically rigorous curriculum taught by expert faculty, which currently includes two and fouryear degree programs in Biblical Studies and a four-year
Mission degree, would prepare graduates for careers in religious ministry, there is so much more to it.
This unique education model blends theology with everyday life skills, financial and business management, and an opportunity to gain hands-on experience to provide a well-balanced education that equips students with the skills necessary for success in a wide variety of fields.
Graduates can also choose to prepare for secular careers such as humanitarian relief, missionary work, establishing and operating nonprofit businesses such as food banks, medical clinics, pregnancy centers, and homeless shelters.
But really, the sky is the limit. Champion emphasized that the college is appropriate for any students that are seeking an educational experience that supports their values. According to Champion, Ethnos may be a good fit for Christian students who have been homeschooled through

12th grade who may thrive in the Christian environment.
Ethnos College’s staff, faculty, and board is made up of a diverse group of Christians with a variety of backgrounds, interests, and cultures. None of the courses the college offers pursue social or political agendas. The goals are exclusively to glorify God through the gospel and to enable people to fulfill their life’s purpose through education. Unity in Christ is an important tenet of Ethnos College’s goal to change the lives of its students, the community, and the world.
Progress
The College’s first academic semester began in the fall of 2022 with 16 students. This number has almost doubled for this spring semester. The students range in age from high school graduates to those in their seventies, and come from a variety of different backgrounds educationally, professionally, and geographically.
While Dr. Champion is thrilled with the growth of the student body in number, he’s also excited to gain students from as far away as Pakistan, Kenya, and Zimbabwe. These students, he pointed out, have to be particularly committed. “Because of the different time zones, our Zimbabwe student gets up at 1 a.m. and the Pakistani students get up at 4 a.m. to go to class. That’s just amazing.”
With continued growth, Champion is planning to add other secular courses of study for bachelor’s degrees in nonprofit management, business administration, and more. L
A Life of Service
Dr. T. Tyronne Champion
Impactful is an excellent adjective for Champion. He has a long history of local service and has received multiple commendations for his philanthropic work at the county, state, and national levels. He and his wife Felicia are well known as the founders and directors of the nonprofit outreach organization Community Touch in Bealeton and its offshoot ministries, Clara’s Food Pantry, Victory Transitional Housing, and Noah’s Ark Thrift Store. Champion and his wife have twice received the Fauquier County Citizen of the Year for Nonprofit Work award. Champion also serves as an active member of the PATH Foundation Community Action Committee.

Blushing Bunny Mimosas
Want to make an Easter bunny blush? Add a splash of elderberry syrup to his mimosa!
Start with a classic mimosa (equal amounts of icy cold orange juice and Champagne) adding a splash of the rosy syrup for a blushing hue.
Elderberry syrup is readily available in the health food section of upscale grocery stores everywhere. Also, in Warrenton, at The Natural Marketplace, Whiffletree Farm, and Erin’s Elderberries.
All That Bubbles is Not Champagne
Only sparkling white wine from the Champagne region of France is correctly called “Champagne.”
Sparkling white wine from Spain is called Cava. From Italy, it’s Prosecco. From Germany, Sekt. Here in the US we use the generic term –sparkling wine. But no matter where it comes from, we affectionately nick name all the bubblies “Champagne.”

Eggs Gratinée
Move over Eggs Benedict. These brunch eggs are every bit as sophisticated without any of the fuss plus you can make them in advance. Yup. You’re gonna love this recipe!
SERVES 4 TO 6
USES A BROILER SAFE SERVING DISH WITH SIDES NO HIGHER THAN 1 INCH.
INGREDIENTS
8 hard boiled eggs (shells removed)
4 Tablespoons butter
2 teaspoons cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon pepper
1/8 teaspoon nutmeg
1 cup heavy cream
8 oz. shredded Swiss cheese
1/3 cup shredded parmesan cheese
Garnish – fresh parsley
DIRECTIONS
Cut eggs in half from round end to oval end. Place cut side down in a buttered, broiler safe serving dish. Set aside. Melt butter in a small pot. Stir in corn starch, pepper, and nutmeg. Cook on low for 1 minute. Whisk in cream. Cook on low till thickened – about 2 minutes.
Remove from heat. Stir in the Swiss till melted. Pour over eggs. Sprinkle with parmesan. Broil till golden –about 3 minutes. Watch carefully to avoid burning. Sprinkle with parsley. Serve immediately.
TO MAKE AHEAD
Hard boil the eggs up to 2 days in advance. Peel. Refrigerate tightly covered. About 20 minutes before serving time, remove the eggs from the fridge to take the chill off then proceed with the recipe.
Hard Boiled Eggs 101
The internet is loaded with tricks for peeling hard boiled eggs. Bet you’ve tried them all.
Over cooking is what makes eggs hard to peel. The membrane connecting the white to the shell gets tough and holds on tight. A perfectly cooked hard boiled egg will have an ever-so-slight bit of moisture in the center of the yolk.
For perfect hard boiled eggs….. Fill a pot with water so the eggs will be completely submerged when added to the pot but don’t add the eggs just yet. First bring the water to a rolling boil on medium high.
Then, using a spoon, lower cold (right from the fridge) eggs into the boiling water. For large or extra large eggs, set your timer at 10 minutes.
When the timer rings, pour off the boiling water. Replace it with cool tap water to stop the cooking. Repeat. One by one, remove an egg from the water, gently crack and peel. Put the peeled egg into a bowl of ice water. Once all the eggs are peeled, drain then refrigerate till needed. If an egg gives you trouble, return it to the cool water with any unpeeled eggs and come back to it later.
Watercress Slaw with Horsey Sauce
Pepper-y leaves. Tender, succulent stems. Sharp, earthy dressing. One of my favorite salads.
SERVES 4 TO 6
INGREDIENTS
1/4 cup mayonnaise or Miracle Whip
2 teaspoons horseradish (or to taste)
4 to 5 cups fresh watercress (leaves and stems cut into bite size pieces)
DIRECTIONS
Mix mayo and horseradish. Fold in the watercress. Chill.
Lemon Custard and Raspberry Jam Cream Puffs
One bite and you’ll swear these scrumptious clouds of yumminess were made by angels.

Using a serrated knife, cut 1/3 off the top of each baked shell. Set tops aside. The baked shells may look moist or under-baked inside. That’s normal. Divide jam between the bottoms then spoon in the custard slightly overfilling. Position tops on the custard pressing down gently. Refrigerate, lightly covered, till serving time then dust heavily with powdered sugar and garnish with raspberries.
TO MAKE AHEAD
Fill the shells the day before and refrigerate, lightly covered. Dust with powdered sugar and garnish at serving time.

Lemon Custard
Like velvet on your tongue. (Sigh…) MAKES ABOUT 3 CUPS – ENOUGH FOR 12 CREAM PUFFS
INGREDIENTS
3 large lemons
3 cups milk (dairy or plant)
¾ cup sugar
6 Tablespoons cornstarch
1/8 teaspoon salt
3 egg yolks
3 Tablespoons butter
DIRECTIONS
Zest the lemons then juice. You should have about 4 Tablespoons zest and about 5 Tablespoons juice. Set aside. Put milk into a medium pot. Heat on low, uncovered, till steaming. Remove from heat. In a medium, heat proof bowl, mix zest, sugar, cornstarch, salt, and yolks. One tablespoon at a time, mix in the hot milk. After you’ve added about 6 Tablespoons of the hot milk, you can add the hot milk a little more generously - several Tablespoons at a time – until you’ve added it all. Return the warmed mixture to the pot. Cook on low (uncovered and stirring) until it begins to “plop” – 2 to 3 minutes. Remove from heat. Pour into a clean, heat safe bowl to stop the cooking. Stir in butter then lemon juice. Cool. Cover and refrigerate until needed.
Pastry Shells
Cream puff dough is traditionally piped free form onto a cookie sheet. Takes practice. But, by spooning the dough into a muffin pan, you get gorgeous, equally sized pastry shells with dramatic rise. No skill required! Makes any baker look like a pro.
MAKES 12 PASTRY SHELLS
USES A MUFFIN PAN WITH EACH CUP MEASURING 2 ¾ INCHES IN DIAMETER X 1 ¼ INCHES DEEP
INGREDIENTS
1 cup water
1 stick butter
¼ teaspoon salt
1 cup all purpose flour
4 large or extra large eggs
DIRECTIONS
Position oven rack so pastry will bake in the upper 1/3. Preheat to 400 degrees. Coat pan with baking spray. In a small pot, heat water and butter together (uncovered) until the water comes to a rolling boil. Remove from heat and stir until the butter completely melts. Stir in flour and salt forming a paste. Add eggs, one at a time, stirring until each is completely incorporated. Dollop about 1/3 cup dough into each muffin cup. Bake until nicely browned – 25 to 30 minutes. Remove from oven. Using a pointed knife, make a ½ inch slit in the side of each shell to let steam escape. Remove shells from pan to cooling rack. L
