t’s our May issue, and, as always, is a precursor to the most exciting of the year: the August issue in which the Best of Fauquier results will be published. It is during this month — May 10-June 15 — that voting is open for this popular contest. Now is the time to show support for your favorite businesses and organizations in our community. Some businesses win their categories year after year, and we support these longtime businesses who have gained such popularity through years of excellent service to the community. Sometimes, though, there is a new winner, either a new business in town, or a longtime business that wins for the first time, and we love those surprises too. Either way, we can’t do it without your votes. The lists in the contest are prepopulated with local businesses, but we can’t always know everyone. Don’t see your favorite listed? There’s a spot to write it in for consideration. Keep in mind the business submitted MUST be in Fauquier County, and some categories, such as medical providers, list the entrants as part of a practice, not individually, so check carefully before adding to avoid duplicates. We look forward to hearing from you all.

Q & A

In this ongoing series, we hope to help current gardeners as well as inspire beginners to start. Fauquier County has so many resources to support gardeners, and a lot of people with a wealth of knowledge on the subject. Jim Hankins, executive director of the Fauquier Education Farm, is our local expert, and he is answering questions from our readers.

It’s Time to Plant! I started many of my seedlings in peat pots. Will planting them with the pot slow the growth of their roots once planted in the garden?

With peat pots it's usually best to tear the pot a little if you are leaving it around the roots. You want to make it easy for that plant's roots to spread out into the soil.

I had some issues with disease with some of my tomatoes last year. Is there a way to treat the soil to prevent it from infecting my crops this year?

There are a host of different tomato diseases, some related to soil, some to air circulation and moisture control, and some related to variety. Rotating crops around rather than growing in the same spot can really help with disease control. Getting a soil test to see if you have the right nutrients is really important. Before suggesting treatments, it's really valuable to know what kind of disease your plants have. The folks at the Fauquier Master Gardener Help Desk may be able to diagnose the disease from a photograph and a few leaves inside a tightly sealed plastic bag. It's important to know just what the problem is before you offer solutions.

Should I rotate the location of certain plants from year to year? I have permanent trellis structures for my tomatoes that would be difficult to move.

Crop rotation is a very good idea and will help reduce some insect and disease problems. If you've got a permanent structure like a lattice then you can help by replacing the top few inches of soil or adding generous amounts of compost.

To till or not to till before planting? I've heard conflicting opinions.

There is a big No Till movement going on but you should do a bit of research to fully understand how it can work before deciding to just stop tilling. If you Google, “continuous no till using hay mulch” you'll get a wealth of valuable information on no till practices. At the Education Farm we try to raise both no till crops and others that require a great deal of tillage. We have a workshop on June 1st that will talk about promoting soil health and using some no till practices that may help you understand this issue better.

Above: Jim Hankins, executive director of the Fauquier Education Farm, located at 8428 Meetze Road in Warrenton. The Fauquier Education Farm offers agriculture-related education through demonstrations, classroom instruction, on-farm workshops, and hands-on learning. The farm also supports the community by contributing all of its agricultural products to local food banks and by providing volunteer opportunities. Learn more at fauquier educationfarm.org

I've tried growing seedless watermelons (alongside sugar baby varieties for pollination as the seed package indicates) but the melons are always still full of seeds. What gives? I haven't run into seedless watermelons that ended up being seedy. Seedless melons are difficult to get to sprout. And as you mentioned, you'll need some seeded melons growing with them as pollinators for the seedless ones. Other than that, seedless melons can be pretty easy. If your seed pack isn't giving you the plants you expected, then a better seed company might be the answer. We are growing several types of seedless and seeded watermelons at the farm this year and will have a workshop called Wonders of Watermelons on August 3rd, there will even be a taste test during the workshop. w Have a vegetable gardening question for Jim? Send it to editor@warrentonlifestyle.com and it might be answered in our next issue.

Officer Chai Fuller STORY AND PHOTO BY LINDSAY HOGEBOOM

S

ome would say that Warrenton Police Officer Chai Fuller was destined to have a career in law enforcement. “My entire family is law enforcement,” she said. “My mom did 20 years for Fairfax Sheriff ’s Office, my uncle worked as a correctional officer in a Georgia state prison…my grandfather was a military police officer, and my Godparents were in the Marine Corps. And then my other Godparents, my Godmother works for the FBI [Federal Bureau of Investigation] and my Godfather works for ATF [Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms]. So I kind of wasn’t straying away from it even if I tried to.” While Fuller’s family history may have led her to a job in law enforcement, it’s her charisma and outgoing demeanor that make her a perfect fit for her role as public information officer (PIO). “I love it!” said Fuller about her role with the department. She was originally hired in July of 2017 as a Warrenton police officer, “and then when our new chief came in February of 2020, we [didn’t] have a PIO position. He came from Alexandria, and almost every larger department has a bigger PIO office, so he said, ‘We need one,’” she explained. Then when Chief Michael Kochis got to know Fuller, “He said, ‘Yeah, you’re in this position,’” she said. In her role, Fuller not only works to keep community members apprised of department news, but also develops creative new ways to cultivate meaningful relationships with the community that enhance communication, transparency, understanding, and trust. During the COVID pandemic, this included programs such as a partnership with Fauquier FRESH to bring virtual workout programs to kids — for which Fuller

taught hip-hop — and neighborhood popups that encouraged people to get outside and interacting with local groups, including the Warrenton Police Department, Warrenton United Methodist Church, and Fauquier FRESH. “A new thing that I’m getting ready to do is called patch pal,” she said. “You write on a notecard just saying, ‘Hey, I'm Officer Fuller, this is what I'm doing today. It’s been a great day. How about you?’ And you include one of our patches in the letter and you give it to [an elementary school student] and they become your patch pal. So, you start writing to them and you start talking about your day, basically like a mentorship program.” Another program of Fuller’s creation, called “See It In a Different Light,” is a role-reversal program in which citizens experience a situation from a police officer’s point of view. “[Participants] go through a PowerPoint…to understand situational awareness, defensive tactics, de-escalation, and nonverbal/verbal cues,” she explained. After the presentation, participants are handed a radio and a badge number, and dispatch alerts them to a call about a suspicious person (played by one of the department’s retired lieutenants). “So you get the call and run the scenario. It’s not anything weaponized — I maybe get your heartrate up just a little bit with arguments and stuff, but that’s about it,” Fuller said. “Then we go back and talk about, ‘How was

“My entire family is law enforcement”

12 Warrenton Lifestyle

M AY 2 0 2 2

that experience?’ The feedback that we got from that program was that it was eye-opening. [Participants] didn’t realize how much communication actually works.” Another aspect of Fuller’s job is to ensure that morale is good within the department. “My job is to make sure the community is happy with us, and we are happy within ourselves. Because if we aren’t happy within ourselves, it’s going to translate out in the community,” she said. “And it makes me happy. I feel better as a human being making sure that everybody else is feeling happy. That’s just how I’ve always been.” In her spare time, “I’m a shopaholic!” said Fuller. When she isn’t shopping, she enjoys spending time with family, “and I think friends are family as well,” she said. In addition to friends, Fuller’s family includes her husband and her six-month-old son. “Of course, I just love being around my kid and taking him to swimming. He’s learning so fast.” Come September, Fuller and her family will be heading out for a new adventure in Hawaii for her husband’s military orders. “I’ve lived here all my life, 28 years, and to up and move with a newborn…it’s definitely a change,” she said. “But I know I can always handle [what I’m given], or at least try to.” w

pring and early summer are my favorite times to be in Warrenton, and I know I’m not alone in that belief! The season also marks the return of two of Experience Old Town Warrenton’s favorite programs: the Old Town Flower Baskets, and First Fridays. Thanks to the donations of local businesses and the skills of Blue Ridge Property Services, Main Street will once again be graced with beautiful flower arrangements

in baskets suspended above the street. These botanical charms will be expanding this year down some side streets to add beauty to as many corners of Old Town as possible. You can help too! We’ll need volunteers to help us plant the baskets, so please reach out on Facebook or via email at director@oldtownwarrenton.com. Starting June 3rd, Experience Old Town Warrenton and Allegro Community School of the Arts will be partnering to bring back First Fridays, a beloved Warrenton tradition. There will be some major changes to the event as we adapt to the weekend street closures. First, the event will be focused on 3rd to 5th Streets, and selected vendors will be non-profit and activities based. This focuses the energy of First Fridays on our merchant community rather than out-of-town businesses. As always, each Friday will have a theme and unique food and drink options will be provided. With the exception of July 1st, when Warrenton Town Limits will return, First Fridays will continue through October. As always, we are eager for your feedback, and EOTW will have a booth at each event. Stop by and share your thoughts! w

Fauquier Anti Sex Trafficking Alliance Fauquier group helps Virginia State Police raise awareness about human trafficking

Co-founder of the Fauquier Anti Sex Trafficking Alliance Amelia Stansell, right, stands with Special Agent S. Myers and Sr. Trooper Young of Virginia State Police, far right, after speaking with a trucker about human trafficking.

f you stopped for gas while passing through Opal in Fauquier County a few weeks ago, you may have seen several Virginia State Police officers passing out flyers and talking to truckers. From April 18-20, State Police positioned themselves at various truck stops, motor carrier service centers, gas stations and Quarles truck stop in Opal. The officers were engaging with drivers and distributing educational materials, in English and Spanish, to raise awareness about human trafficking. Dale Bennett, president and CEO of the Virginia Trucking Association and partner with Virginia State Police, said in a news release police are mainly engaging truck drivers because they are in a “unique position” to recognize potential victims of human trafficking. “They are family men and women, whose own children could be targeted for trafficking, so they’re able to talk to their peers and spread the message about human trafficking awareness,” Bennett said. “The trucking industry has a duty to help solve this problem, and we are committed to saving lives and protecting the communities we serve.” Former Fauquier County sheriff and current Virginia Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security Bob Mosier created the initiative, called “Operation Safe Passage,” in response to the increase of cases of sex trafficking in Virginia and nationwide. According to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, during fiscal 2021, the federal agency arrested 2,360 people nationwide in connection with human trafficking. From those cases, more than 720 trafficking victims were identified and offered critical assistance. In Virginia alone, there were 179 reported cases of trafficking and 77 traffickers identified in Virginia in 2019, according to Polaris, a nonprofit resource and advocacy

Anyone who suspects human trafficking is encouraged to report it by dialing #77 on a cell phone to reach the nearest Virginia State Police Emergency Dispatch Center or to call 911. Tips can also be submitted to the U.S. Department of Homeland Security anonymously to the following toll-free hotlines: To get help from the National Human Trafficking Hotline (Para reportar un posible caso de trata de personas): 1-866347-2423. center combating human trafficking. “Preventing human trafficking and providing support to its victims have been a priority of Gov. Youngkin and his administration since stepping into office in January,” Mosier said in the release. “I am extremely pleased to see the Virginia State Police taking an aggressive and active stance towards addressing what has become a global pandemic. Virginia has no tolerance for the exploitation of any human being, and is committed to apprehending, prosecuting and bringing to justice anyone associated with this crime.” Mosier was focused on the issue before he was appointed to the current governor’s cabinet. In 2019, he co-founded the Fauquier Anti Sex Trafficking Alliance along with local resident Amelia Stansell after securing a $23,700 grant from the PATH Foundation and funds from the Rotary Club of Warrenton. With these funds, Stansel said her organization was able to provide Human Trafficking Investigation training for 475 to local law enforcement, building inspectors and other government officials in both Fauquier and Culpeper counties. Stansell said state police have been a “key partner” in helping her organization prevent trafficking in Fauquier County. While Stansell noted she does not have data to suggest there is a major human trafficking issue in Fauquier specifically, she said helping educate the community is important nonetheless. “We recognize that truckers are the eyes and ears on the roads and play a critical role in ending trafficking,” she said. w

Honoring our Veterans One Flag at a Time An act of remembrance and gratitude BY SUE BALDANI

“P

eople in this country would not have the life they do without freedom,” said Lulu Baer, coordinator for the John D. Sudduth American Legion Post 72’s “Flags In” project at Warrenton Cemetery. “Members of the military give up their own freedom to ensure that we have ours and we owe them big time.” An annual tradition that began in 1948 at Arlington Cemetery, Flags In is a time to remember and honor the fallen heroes who sacrificed their lives for our nation. In 1986, a survey was done by the John D. Sudduth American Legion Post 72 in Warrenton to find where veterans were buried in the local cemetery. “Warrenton is very patriotic, and what they did was get all these names and assign them, depending on their location at the cemetery, into about a dozen or so sections,” said Baer. “We started with about 500 - 600 veterans’ names and now have over 900.” The project was originally carried out by the members of the Legion until around 1989 or 1990, she said, when it was turned over to Boy Scout troop 1171. A Warrenton resident, Baer had been taking part in the project with her son, Abram, who has served with the Marines and is now active duty Army, when he was a Boy Scout. When the Flags In coordinator left because his son aged out around 2009, she took over. Sometime around 2014, the program was halted, and Baer didn’t want to see it end. “We basically recreated and revived this project out of nothing and it was a labor of love because I wanted to make sure our heroes were honored,” she said. “My first instinct was that the project needed to be owned by the

American Legion Post again, because I didn't want it to be just my pet project. It needed to be supported by a bonafide veteran's organization, and so, it was adopted by them after it was restarted.” The Flags In project takes place two times a year, on Memorial Day and Veterans Day. A couple of months before each event, Baer sends out hundreds of emails to local groups, organizations and individuals letting them know about the project and requesting volunteers. She also coordinates with the media to get the word out. Once she has enough volunteers, which usually around 100 to 200 people, they meet at the cemetery to place the over 900 flags at the graves. And then, two weeks later, the flags are removed. “Moser Funeral Home has been with us from the very beginning,” said Baer. “They always erect one of their huge canopies for our teams at no cost to us, so I want to say a big thank you to them.” Volunteers come from Boy Scout troops, churches, youth groups, local organizations, and as individual

community members. “It's a great way to serve your community,” she said. “We often have members of law enforcement and the fire department, and it's a great way for the community to get together and get to know each other without regard to politics, race, or class.” One of the more interesting groups that volunteers, she said, is the motorcycle club, Nam Knights, who came on board in 2020. The club was formed in 1989 to honor vets and police officers and has 78 chapters in 18 U.S. states and one in Canada. “We've given away over $2 million in our 30-plus years of existence,” said member Felix Rivera, a career Army man who has spent over 33 years serving this country. “I started out as a Private and retired as a Lieutenant Colonel. I've had the privilege of serving in 13 U.S. states and in Germany, and did three combat tours to Iraq and Afghanistan. I've served in other capacities as well during my reserve time.” Although he is humbled when people thank him for his service, he said it’s not about a uniform per se. “Service is about an attitude of trying to make your community a better place. And that's why Nam Knights got involved with this project. Not only does it uphold one of the elements of our mission, but we want to make Warrenton a better place. We want to recognize those that quite frankly, other than their loved ones, have been forgotten by most people.” He and his wife, Carmen, live in Gainesville and are members (she as an auxiliary member) of the American Legion Post 72. “We would be remiss in our duty if we didn’t offer remembrance to these people who came before us and who made the ultimate sacrifice,” he said. Added Baer, “We owe them our respect and gratitude, and this is one of the simplest ways we can do that. It only takes a few hours on one or two Saturdays a couple of times a year.” w

t’s important to me to feature as many local products as possible,” Angela Goodman said. “Our food is 100% fresh and made from scratch in our kitchen.” Angela Goodman is the owner of the recently opened Famous Toastery, located next to the Baymont by Wyndham hotel in Warrenton. Famous Toastery offers takeout breakfast, brunch, lunch and catering. Goodman worked in HVAC for 15 years after graduating from Virginia Tech. After spending the majority of that time in the Roanoke and Chesapeake areas, her job took her to Charlotte, North Carolina. On the weekends, her family would go to a little cafe in Charlotte called Toast Cafe. “We took our kids every weekend and had breakfast,” Goodman said. After her

job brought her to the Washington, D.C. Metro area, Goodman and her family were missing their weekend breakfasts at Toast Cafe. “I went to visit a friend in Charlotte and they had changed the name and were beginning to franchise,” Goodman said. “I submitted an inquiry thinking It would go nowhere.” Although her only restaurant experience was working at the Waffle House at age 16, Goodman was still confident that she could be successful. “I think they were new to franchising and I was pretty persuasive that I could make it work,” Goodman said. “I operate on a ‘failure is not an option’ philosophy.” The process was long, but ultimately worth it. Upon being approved to run a franchise, Goodman then had to find a space and do the buildout. Overall, it took about 14 months before every-

businesses, as well. “I love having all the synergy with these other small businesses and the kitchen is so large that it made sense for me to bring more vendors in.” Also featured in the same location as Famous Toastery is Sue’s Pies & More, Rai’s Subs, and Freed’s Biscuit Company. Freed’s Biscuits are even on the menu at Famous Toastery. When the store originally opened, Goodman was traveling back and forth from Ashburn daily. “My husband works in the store now and we have brought on local staff members, as well,” she said. “Our kitchen manager, Amber Marshall, has been with us for four years and was a server with us in the Ashburn location. She was commuting back and forth from Culpeper to Ashburn five days a week. After she had her baby, she wanted to come back and work in the kitchen. I knew once I was able to find space in Warrenton that I’d be able to change her life by cutting her commute down.” Between Warrenton and Ashburn, Goodman has a team of over 30 employees, with at least half of them having been with her for at least 3 years. “We’re family — to each other and to our customers. If you’re skeptical about carry-out breakfast, we want to make sure you have a great experience. If it’s not up to your standard, we’re here for your feedback. We want to be part of the community and support other small businesses. There are the ones who sell at the farmers markets and we’re working right alongside them. We want to be part of the Fauquier community just like how we are part of the Loudoun community.” It makes sense that Goodman would want to surround herself with other small businesses, as she is no stranger to entrepreneurship herself. In addition to running both Famous Toastery locations, Angela is also a certified Profit First Professional and is a small business consultant. Famous Toastery in Warrenton is open from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday and offers breakfast, brunch, and lunch carryout, as well as catering. “Our catering offers more than what’s on our menu and it’s 100% customizable to your needs.” You can find Famous Toastery online on Doordash, ezCater, or order online through their website at famoustoastery. com. thing was up and running. Goodman opened her first Famous Toastery franchise in Ashburn in 2016 as a full-service restaurant. “While we were getting things off the ground, I was also deciding where I wanted to go next,” Goodman said. “I had been looking in the Haymarket, Gainesville, and Warrenton areas, but I couldn’t find something that was the right square footage. Then, I found the kitchen on Comfort Inn Drive. I approached the owners about leasing the kitchen while trying to find a brick and mortar location. I just wanted to get the food out into the world and get a following before opening up a full service restaurant.” The carryout and catering Famous Toastery location opened in Warrenton in August of 2021 and is the first of its kind in the brand. ithin the English Gothic-style stone church, Grace The Plains, the Parish Hall is adorned with a small stage framed by bright, red curtains. Dr. Lori Lind, Managing Director of Shakespeare Opera Theatre (SOT), took one look at the stage and struggled to see how it would work for her company of performers. Her Technical Director instead turned her around to face the massive stone fireplace and mahogany balcony that would be their stage.

The setting is perfect for Shakespeare, reviving the essence of Swan Theatre–one of the original homes of Shakespeare’s plays. Grace’s Father Weston knew the space had potential and envisioned the church becoming something of a community center when he joined in 2017.

The Arts at Grace

Fr. Weston brought his vision to life with the Grace Church Concert Series. The church hosted highly esteemed artists throughout the series, such as the Washington National Opera Cafritz Young Artists in its first season.

“They’re a cultural center,” said SOT Associate Producer and Performer Maggie Ramsey, “They provide a venue for lots of artistic endeavors in Fauquier County.” Dr. Lind was working as a musician at Grace when Fr. Weston heard about her company and suggested they perform there. The relationship started during the company’s 2018 season and they have since gathered quite a following, now selling out shows. The alliance with the church has fueled Fr. Weston’s vision and given SOT a space they can plan productions around. The balcony alone, essential for Shakespeare’s plays, sold Dr. Lind on the idea.

Shakespeare Opera Theatre in The Plains

Lori loves The Plains, saying, “If I could afford to live there I would. But alas, I’m a poor musician so I live in Haymarket and go to The Plains a lot.” Beyond its natural charm, the company feels the support from the community. “The response that we’ve gotten is very encouraging. We’re never wondering whether we’re going to have an audience at Grace because they know us there,” Maggie shared. SOT’s performances in The Plains create an

accessible artistic hub that prevents a monopoly on art in Washington. Ramsey has given lectures at retirement homes in the past and heard the resounding conclusion that there isn’t much of an opportunity to see opera. The company brings that to the Piedmont in partnership with Grace. The chances are as much for the public as they are for the volunteers within the company.

Opportunities to grow

SOT is a nonprofit and runs on the work of volunteers. The organization has been “a gateway to learn about how to run an opera company” for Maggie. Ramsey was teaching and wanted to break into arts administration when she found the audition for SOT and joined them in 2017–two years after their origin. The dedication of the group has afforded them some notoriety that “helps [them] bring in world-class people [so] people can see what they do up close,” Dr. Lind said. “To find people that can both sing amazingly in opera and act amazingly in Shakespeare is pretty hard, and that’s what we have to do. We get amazing performers from all over the country,” she shared.

The company appreciates playing a part in artists getting their start. One of their performers, Clark Furlong, has even gone on to star in HBO’s Euphoria. “I’ve learned a lot about organizing what goes into a production beyond focusing on the roles that I do,” Maggie said. “It’s a very collaborative effort,” she explained, that brings it all together.

versions of operas that are based on Shakespeare, but I don’t know of another company that does what we do,” said Maggie. They are committed to making it a fun evening for patrons. “We try to keep things family-friendly,” Dr. Lind said, “within reason–I mean, it’s Shakespeare”

Act One

Maggie said, “Since the pandemic, we are the sole remaining professional Shakespeare company in Northern Va.” SOT is expanding to Loudoun County, in an effort to increase accessibility to the arts, but devoted to The Plains. Carrying on the organization is just as important to Dr. Lind as carrying it farther. “Many times the company dies with the founder and we [want] to make sure that [doesn’t] happen,” she said. They focus on the next generation of producers such as Maggie. “I’m not going to die anytime soon,” Lori clarified, “I’m not that old!” For now, it’s about opening night traditions of going to Frost Diner after the show. If they remember to bring cash then they’ll be there for their next show, Othello, in July. “We’re there till 3 a.m. yelling and they put up with us,” Lori said, “Singers are loud, what can I say?” w

Both Ramsey and Dr. Lind fell in love with Shakespeare before they found opera. Lori even has a dog named Romeo. There are plenty of operas based on Shakespeare’s plays, but the combination breeds a new type of story. Operas are often bent to certain singers, sometimes creating entirely new characters in the inspiring play. The nature of operas leads to sacrifices in Shakespeare’s plays. SOT puts on a “unique mixture of classical theater and classical music,” Dr. Lind illustrated. When compiling the arrangements, she cuts the play and opera that she wishes to merge into a story with continuity truer to the Shakespeare side of things. “We want to do things that people wouldn’t normally see, which is why it’s unique. You can go to a lot of opera houses and see fully sung

From Trinidad to Warrenton Steel pans for all at Fauquier High School band program BY JAYA PATIL

“T

hey’re not from Jamaica, they’re from Trinidad and Tobago,” states the band and orchestra Director Andrew Paul before every Fauquier High concert. The students hear it even more, some of them instinctively repeating it verbatim. “I’ve always been fascinated with the sound of [steel pans],” Paul said, “[it’s] so resonant, like no other.” It has been twenty years since Paul learned how to play steel pans at Villanova University and ten years since Fauquier High had the renovated space and funds to adopt steel pans in their band. The band has made it to a full set of pans, but this is no simple feat for schools in this area. An instrument born from nothing Drums are one of the many instruments integral to African culture. In the latter half of the 1800s, the British government banned drums in some Caribbean islands to subdue African culture. Residents of Trinidad and Tobago persevered, using bamboo sticks as instruments. By the 1930s, impoverished communities were using metal scraps for such instruments. People predominantly used 55-gallon steel oil drums to make nontraditional percussion instruments by the mid-1950s. Through use and natural warping, they discovered how to create concave indentations on the surface of the steel pan, creating different tones and notes. Steel pans are the only acoustic instrument invented in the twentieth century and are now the national instrument of the Republic of Trinidad and Tobago. One of the early

“The instruments are so new, they haven’t been standardized,” Paul said; one steel pan, like a bass, will be different between manufacturers. “We learned on the Mannette steel pans so we’re sticking with that,” insisted Jerome Homenik, father of students Ethan and Andrew Homenik. Jerome learned how to play last summer alongside his entire family at Fauquier High’s annual steel pan camp.

Classes, camps, and concerts–oh my!

Last summer, three generations from the Homenik family attended the summer camp and concert. It was a great way to step away from the high-tech screens and be engaged with each another. The Homeniks’ younger son, Andrew, is so interested in the steel pans that his parents purchased him one for Christmas. The instrument is being made at Manette Musical Instruments. The Homenik family was able to visit and Andrew was able to pick out his pan and actually help with the hammering.

innovators of the steel pan, Dr. Elliott “Ellie” Mannette– born in Trinidad, settled in West Virginia. Dr. Mannette’s store Mannette Musical Instruments in Osage, WV was the manufacturer of Fauquier High’s steel pan collection.

Bringing steel pans to Fauquier High

“The inventor of the modern steel pan checked all of our instruments except the last one. It’s kind of like having a Stradivarius violin checked out by Stradivarius,” Paul said. “Groups are still making new pans every time they form,” said Mason Pauling, one of the students involved in the steel pans at Fauquier High. The steel pans are offered in a class and after-school program, with students participating in either or both. The instruction is educational while also honoring the tradition of the instruments. Students learn the history of the steel pans and some of the music is taught by rote since the steel pan inventors learned that way.

Over five years ago, Fauquier High started the summer steel pan camp to promote and fundraise the program. They opened it for grades 7-11, encouraging middle schoolers to get involved in the school program once they made it to high school. They started inviting families and adults a few years ago. Last summer, two of the participating families had three generations at the camp: students, parents, and grandparents. The Homenik family was one of those. Their youngest son, Andrew, was involved in teaching everyone. From Andrew’s older brother Ethan all the way to Nana Jan, their grandmother, they completed the four sessions and finished the camp with a concert. “There’s no experience necessary, you don’t have to know how to read music,” said Paul. “It’s open to anybody–not just the camp but the whole program. We have kids that started in January and they’re playing some of the toughest stuff we have in our class,” Paul explained. Andrew Homenik recounted one experience, saying, “We [taught] teachers how to play steel pans and a lot of them had never done anything music-related so that was their first introduction to it. We were able to teach them a full song in a one-hour session.” The students in the program make the trip down to Virginia Beach each year for Virginia International PANFest’s celebration of Caribbean culture. The festival brings top international steel pan players and manufacturers to the area for clinics, competitions, and concerts. “They remember us because we are Fauquier High School–that name stands out,” Mr. Paul laughed, “and our instruments are red.”

Willing to have fun

“Our program is special because students can come into it with no experience, they just need to have a good attitude and be willing to work and have fun,” said Paul. For some students, the program can help them excel beyond steel pans. Student Shelby Rochez said, “When I did finally commit, I started seeing improvements all across the board in anything music-related that I was doing.” Andrew and Ethan’s mother Kerry Homenik said, “There’s no long-term commitment, just dive in!” noting that learners don’t need musical talents to pick up steel pans or the same investment for something like guitar. The steel pan program was hard-won, with plenty of difficulties in getting the instruments: they’re heavy, expensive, and require patience with long production turnaround times. The obstacles make it more extraordinary that steel pans are available in Fauquier. “This will probably be one of the few opportunities to play the steel pans that I get in my life. It’s a rare occurrence to have this opportunity,” said Ethan Homenik. It all pays off with the joy in sharing and hearing them. “Once you learn how to play a song, it’s so fun and catchy,” said student Jefferson Uzzle, whose favorite song to play is “Under the Sea.” Nana Jan added, “It’s happy music and there’s an enthusiasm about it that we all felt.” w

wners of a 10-acre farm in Goldvein, Laine and Jay “Gizmo” Hall say they are just winging it with the help of YouTube. J says they are “learning every day” how to care for their property and turn it into the dream they pursue. Their land is complete with a big barn, two-acre pond, fertile garden, a legion of animals, and a pickleball court. One of those things may not seem like the others but is fundamental to the vision for the farm.

Foundation of a founder

J was raised in and around Dale City while Laine grew up in rural Missouri. By the time he was a teenager, J was involuntarily put through therapy and medicated for what they identified as ADHD. He recalls his time up till graduation as characterized by drug sales and having been shot four times. After growing up without control over his circumstances, J made his way to the side of his environment where he could take charge of helping people. He saw his hometown from all angles, working in the emergency room and volunteering for the fire department. He volunteered for 10 years, during which he met Laine volunteering as an EMT. Working his way up, he got a job at the Manassas Park Fire Department. J put himself through paramedic school and came out the other end with everything he hoped to accomplish.

Bit by the bug

The two were renting around Lake Jackson and J would go to the Manassas Park Community Center during his free time. There he saw two 70-something women playing a game he didn’t recognize. The second time he noticed them it was mutual and the ladies reeled him in. “You don’t get to look twice without trying it once,” they said as they put a paddle

“I knew his mental health wasn’t okay and pickleball made him happy.” J returned home and left his job at the fire department to go all-in with pickleball.

A Farm in Fauquier County

The two got married and wanted to find space away from the city. Their realtor friend worked on finding listings. The first and best place on her list was one that both J and Laine had separately found but didn’t share with one another as they waited for their realtor. J said, “It was a match made in heaven,” and they bought the spot over three years ago.

Giving back Laine and Jay “Gizmo” Hall on their Pickleball court.

in his hand, steered him onto the court, and introduced him to Pickleball. “It was love at first sight,” he said of the ping pong and tennis love-child sport. “I don’t come from a tennis or ping pong background. I sucked at every sport that I ever tried to play growing up,” J explained, but he had a knack for pickleball. “Every time he was on shift he would go play and he started playing on his days off,” recounted Laine, “then, magically, a paddle showed up at the house that he had ordered.” It wasn’t until her winter holiday off work that Laine was able to go experience pickleball herself. She went to the court where J would play with the retirees on weekday mornings. They knew Laine from J talking about her and warmly welcomed her to play.

A time for decisions J’s dedication picked up speed as he started traveling for tournaments and gathering a social media following. Everything came to a head before the Texas Open. The tournament clashed with a last-minute work schedule change and J knew he “had to pick one to go all-in.” J lost sleep in deciding but when he explained it to Laine, she didn’t hesitate to say, “I’ll see you when you get back.” Recalling the pivotal moment, Laine said, “I knew his mental health wasn’t okay and pickleball made him happy.” “I went down to the Texas open and had a horrendous tournament. To this day, one of my worst tournaments ever,” J chuckled. Within six months of discovering the sport,

Pickleball was young at the time but also the fastest growing sport in America. The sport gave J the opportunity to “figure out [how to] be a blessing and give back” on a larger scale by traveling. He worked to “take this game of pickleball, that not only saved [his] life but saved a lot of other people’s lives, and introduce it to people.” J advocated for mental health as he started working in detention centers, schools, and leading kids’ clinics. Taking a sport that is accessible because it doesn’t demand many resources, he makes pickleball consumable for every kid no matter their skills or learning style. His transparency with mental health resonates with people and he commits to wearing his heart on his sleeve–or his thoughts on his back in the form of an orange jumpsuit that he decorated with his stream of consciousness.

Halls. J laid his pickleball vision onto the land. They made it into a nonprofit, Pickleball Farm, and raised money to build the first pickleball court on the farm. They threw themselves into gardening and have maintained a no-till and no-spray farm, caring for the land by hand. The family grows produce for donation to Prince William County Community Foundations and are adding on the Fauquier Food Bank. “I’ve been through real life,” J said, “I’ve been homeless before, on food stamps, I’ve had assistance.” He said, “I just wanted to be who I needed when I had nobody.” They are currently building a 16x100 ft greenhouse for growing year-round, funded by a $7,000 USDA grant. J hopes to “provide these resources to people in need and show them that if I can do it, you can do it.” While part of the goal is having visitors and until that picks up, Laine noted that they’re “still able to continue the mission of helping others.”

Flourishing in Fauquier

“Our mission is to introduce pickleball and agricultural experiences to families and kids who [may have not been] introduced to it,” J said. They have hosted spring break camps where kids can learn pickleball, get familiar with farming, and go home with the gift of a paddle and seeds. Pickleball Farm offers the company of turkeys, pigs, and a mini donkey. The Halls adore the outdoors and Old Town. Their nine-year-old son, David, goes to Mary Walter and is playing baseball–bringing them to Warrenton often. As homebodies, though, their favorite place is on the farm. Ten-year-old Evelyn loves to work outside and get her hands dirty with her family. Both kids aren’t thrilled by fishing when it’s slow but love it when the fish are biting. When the weather is warm and the windows are open, Laine’s work calls will be supplemented with the sound of Gizmo the donkey braying or the roosters crowing. It’s a warm life that they have built because they chose happiness. J has won gold at multiple tournaments and positioned himself as a pickleball great, but he says, “I do what I do for purpose.” The two don’t tout perfection: take the Texas Open for example. “It’s just pickleball,” J said, “but is it really just pickleball?” J took the chance on pickleball the same way that they took up a farm without the expertise. The two make it clear that you don’t have to know everything, you just have to go all-in. w

A Hub for the Arts Local Artist and Nonprofit Teamup

I

f you’ve visited the Gloria Faye Dingus Center for the Arts – also known as Gloria’s – in Old Town Warrenton lately, you may have noticed some new wax paintings on display in the gallery. The paintings, made from hot beeswax, resin and several colorful dyes, were made by local Warrenton resident and artist, Sandra Marino, who for the last few months has been on a mission to elevate the presence of the artistic community in Warrenton. Since November, Marino, 44, has been trying to find a space that would allow local artists to come together, collaborate and sell their work. And in time, become a hub for

the arts community in Warrenton. Art has always been a part of Marino’s life since she was a child. She even graduated with a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the Tyler School of Art at Temple University. But in the years following college, Marino began doing less and less painting until she moved to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania with her husband and two kids. While there, Marino said she joined a nonprofit arts organization that was highly collaborative and very involved in the local community. “And that's when I started getting back into art,” she said. “I started painting more

often and doing more pieces and started doing a couple art shows here and there…” Marino said the most valuable part of the experience was being able to collaborate with other artists and receive feedback about her work – equating the experience to a musician receiving feedback about their music. “Sometimes you just need somebody to critique [your work], or say, ‘hey, maybe you need a little bit of this, and a lot of little bit less of that, or this might balance things out,’” she said. But after moving to Warrenton 2017, Marino found the same experience was missing in her new community.

“We have the food, we have the music, we have all these great shops and foot traffic but we don't have a lot of art stuff going on,” she said. “There's some galleries up in Middleburg, and you have galleries in Culpeper, but nothing really in Warrenton,” Marino added. In November, Marino proposed the idea of creating a space for artists in Warrenton on the “Fauquier Community” Facebook forum. She received a lot of positive feedback, but the next step of finding a space in Old Town was not an easy process. “We had several local artists that were interested but finding affordable space…was the biggest hurdle,” Marino said. After months of searching, Marino was introduced to Rhiana Hughes, administrator and media coordinator for Gloria’s, in March while showing her work at the Warrenton Winter Farmers Market. Coincidentally, Gloria’s, a local arts nonprofit and live music venue located on Main Street, was looking for art to fill its gallery, which had not been used since before the pandemic. Hughes said that even before the pandemic her organization had struggled to find artists

“Our mission, which is just to bring arts to Warrenton…and make it really accessible for everybody in the community” to occupy its gallery space, and when the nonprofit began to open up again it was on the lookout for new creators. “Our mission really is to make the arts more accessible to our community, and to promote the arts in Fauquier County,” Hughes said. “We really focused on music because we have the concert space, and that's really been built out and has been very suc-

cessful. But we're really excited to have the gallery and the visual art aspect of it being built out now.’’ Gloria’s is currently renting the space to Marino for a small monthly fee and the nonprofit receives a small commission as well whenever Marino sells a painting. “Anything that we earn goes back into our programs that benefit the community,” Hughes said. Hughes said there are five other local artists also interested in hanging their work in Gloria’s gallery as well. The goal is to have several local rotating artists every few weeks in the gallery, she noted. “Our mission, which is just to bring arts to Warrenton…and make it really accessible for everybody in the community,” she said. Marino is hoping that in time she can recreate the experience she had in Harrisburg and possibly start doing things like holding art classes for children and adults, as well as have events just for artists to create, collaborate and give feedback to one another. “It's about just bringing the community together letting people know that this corner of the world exists because it's a pretty cool corner,” Marino said. w

New Shop, Same Mission Erin’s Elderberries brings business to Vint Hill BY JAYA PATIL

“E

verything about me is being transparent and open. I didn’t start the business to sell things. The business fell into my lap to share our journey and help people along the way,” said Erin Mann, founder of Erin’s Elderberries. Mann started making her own homemade elderberry syrup when her young son had some health problems which the syrup helped with. Before long, it had turned into a business run out of her licensed basement kitchen. Catching up six months after she last spoke with Warrenton Lifestyle, Erin’s Elderberries has gone through a growth spurt: the business now operates in a shop on Aiken Drive in Vint Hill. Opening a shop wasn’t Erin’s primary goal but became another way to continue helping.

Where help is needed

As Erin’s Elderberries flourished online and at farmers markets, Mann noticed market vendors struggling. Throughout COVID, she dedicated herself to mentoring small businesses. “I became the person I wish I had back in 2019 to all of these businesses,” she said. As Erin shared her experience with fellow entrepreneurs, she said, “Their excitement got me reenergized about my business.” “While our story is not the same, it has the same foundation. We started by trying to

help someone we love. We set out to do and make better things for those [whom] we love and found out that we were good at it. We wanted to continue to help other people,” Erin said when considering similarities to the businesses that she met along the way. Ever since she became an entrepreneur, Erin understood the struggle to make your products or services accessible to more people. “When I started out, I wanted somebody in a store to give me shelf space,” she recounted. Throughout her mentoring and conversations with other businesses, Mann said, “I knew I wanted to do something for other small businesses.”

in some way. “The store has grown to sell things I never would have considered,” she said, such as jewelry from Brunda’s Blooming Lotus. Bailey Brunda started making jewelry with her sister as a creative outlet during COVID and they graduated to an Etsy shop before finding space at Erin’s Elderberries. The jewelry funds Brunda’s future and serves as a thoughtfully made gift for Mann’s customers. Perusing the shop, you will also find ice cream from Mann’s hometown in Alabama, Lynchburg’s Scratch Pasta, or meat from Whiffletree Farm. “Some of my customers who have been ordering from Pennsylvania, Maryland, or D.C. have taken the time on a weekend to make a day trip out to us. There’s no higher honor,” she said.

Finding the next step

Community hub

Opening a store would extend her ability to help others the way her elderberry products helped her son and customers, this time supporting her community of small businesses. It became clear that finding a shop was the next step. As she tirelessly hunted for properties last year, she would often miss listings by a couple of hours. After no results, she decided to “live and let God,” as she said, giving up the search before the fall holidays. On a chance outing, she saw a building for lease and got an immediate showing. The kitchen exceeded hers in size and the storage space was equal to the shipping facility they were renting. She was approved right before Thanksgiving and got the keys before vacation in December.

Mann said, “My brand is all about family, that’s why I started my business.” She finds family in the makers that fill her store, in the people who visit, and in everyone who made this possible. “I think of it as everyone’s business because so many people have contributed to it. We created something out of nothing and now we have not just an Erin’s Elderberries store but a community store,” she said. Regarding her team, Erin enthused, “They are just as in it as I am.” Erin relishes every moment the store feels like a community hub. Kids can come on a pretty day, toddlers can play in the toy area, and parents can soak up some sun on the couches. “Everyone’s welcome to just come in and sit a while,” Erin invited. w

I always knew this would be a great place to raise kids. I love the

small-town feel.” Last year, while vacationing in Florida with her family, her sister-in-law mentioned a business she knew of that hosted picnics at the beach. “I had always talked with her about starting a wedding venue. It was always my big dream to put up a barn and host weddings and make special events or retirement parties really special, but it was never a reality because of the costs associated with starting something like that,” Drinkwater said. “She showed this business to me and I thought it was such an incredible idea. I thought it would be the perfect blend of everything I love - decorating, entertaining, the outdoors.” The Warrenton Picnic Co. officially

launched in August of last year. “My husband works on the weekend, so I was available to work on weekends, especially now that my kids are older and self-sufficient. I figured it was something I could do on the side,” Drinkwater said. “I wasn’t planning on launching until September, but my first client was one of my husband’s coworkers. He wanted me to host a picnic to surprise his wife, so I figured I should dive right in. The

first one I did was at Barrel Oak Winery. It was lovely; they had a private setting. It was such a special feeling.” Since that first picnic, Warrenton Picnic Co. has grown to add more designers and to offer much more. Overnight glamping in a tent is available, as is a bubble lounge experience. Kara has done intimate weddings, indoor and outdoor picnics, and girls night get togethers. Barring extreme weather, cold

is not a problem with heating, electricity, and lights. A popular add on to the picnic menu is the s’mores box, to be used with the tabletop fire pit. Glamping and picnics are available on your private property (like glamping in your backyard) or at one of several local venues Kara has partnerships with, such as local wineries, breweries, and farms. Kara’s menu items include elegant picnic fare: charcuterie, fresh bruit, desserts, and chocolate covered strawberries, but more extensive meals are also available through Kara’s partnership with Warrenton Wellness Kitchen. As for the picnics themselves, they’re sure to be absolutely stunning and a special experience for all who are involved. “The most important thing is making sure everyone enjoys their experience with their favorite people and that I can make it special for them at the same time. It’s definitely a special occasion type of thing, but also nice to treat yourself to a girl’s weekend to sit around and enjoy a bottle of wine,” Kara said. “I want people to be able to walk away saying ‘I loved my time while I was sitting there with my friends or family.’ I want it to be so special for everyone and for every detail to be perfect.” w Warrenton Picnic Co. www.warrentonpicnicco.com Instagram: @warrentonpicnicco

Granite’s Gold The Wines of Granite Heights BY MARK LUNA

A

nother year is in the books for The Virginia Governor’s Cup, one of the most rigorous and esteemed wine competitions in the entire country. This year’s 2022 event saw 615 entries from over 100 Virginia wineries, with 65 wineries receiving a combined 127 Gold Medals. Both preliminary and final rounds were conducted by over 20 judges, all with world-class wine credentials, and only the best were selected in each round…all aiming to the final award, the one wine that wins it all. This year’s winner is the 2019 Unitè Reserve, from Cana Vineyards and Winery of Middleburg. As a happy resident of Warrenton, and fulltime wine industry professional, I was elated to learn that Fauquier County was not only well represented in this year’s Governor’s Cup, but one winery in particular nabbed an impressive three Gold Medals for their bottlings…That winery is Granite Heights. Located in Opal, Granite Heights Winery is solely owned and fully operated by Luke and Toni Kilyk. The initial acreage was purchased in 1997 and, as of today, their property totals 160 acres, with 12 of those under vine. From the onset, Luke and Toni handled everything themselves – from extensive yard work and deer fence construction to sophisticated landscaping and vineyard design – all with the

50 Warrenton Lifestyle

M AY 2 0 2 2

intent of growing grapes and making wine. Quite the impressive feat, given their highly successful careers as a lawyer and doctor, respectively. And with what started out as their hobby back in 2001, they’ve been producing wine commercially since 2008, with their first official vintage being released in 2010. Along their journey, Luke and Toni have consulted with various wine and vineyard experts, including renowned viticulturist Lucie Morton, whose contributions to the GH efforts includes a move to ‘high density’ planting, with approximately 2,000 vines per acre. This approach allows the vines to literally fight for their growth and absorption of the critical loam and shale soil nutrients. To that point, cabernet franc and chardonnay comprise about 40% of the plantings, while the remaining balance is devoted to merlot, petit verdot (and manseng), cabernet sauvignon and, one of my favorite varieties, barbera. There’s also some lagrein in the offing, another great Italian red wine grape. As for their wine philosophy, Luke and Toni will tell you point blank, “We do the work, we care about the quality.” And it truly shows. I recently had the great fortune to taste through their 2022 Governor’s Cup Gold Medal award-winning wines, with both Luke and Toni. It was a lovely experience of both

wine noting and consumption, and great conversation about their entire GH story. We opened with Granite Heights Cabernet Franc 2017, a solid showing of what has become Virginia’s most revered red wine grape. Estate grown and produced, GH Cabernet Franc 2017 consists of 95% cab franc and 5% petit verdot, two Bordeaux varieties with historic blending success. Aged 20 months in both American and French oak, it's medium-bodied in style and comes in at a drinkable 13.3% abv, making it ideal with light foods or solo enjoyment. Beautiful ruby red in color, red fruits transfer seamlessly from nose to palate; and the time spent in the bottle adds to its depth. In addition to its recent Gold Medal, Granite Heights Cabernet Franc 2017 also took home the Double Gold award for Best Cabernet Franc in the American Wine Society competition, certainly well deserved. Next up was Granite Heights Lomax Reserve 2016. A classic varietal wine, composed of 45% cabernet sauvignon, 23% petit verdot, 22% merlot and 10% cabernet franc…the absolute essential grapes of Bordeaux. And yet, for a big red wine, it comes in at a very modest 12.60% abv, speaking well to Luke’s sense of both pick-timing in the vineyards and blending skills in the cellar.

Channeled through upwards of 50 blending trials to reach the final and perfect assemblage, with each grape serving its exact purpose, Lomax Reserve 2016 is a cuveé that delivers elegance, grace, power and structure, with an abundance of deep red fruits coating an undercurrent of rich Virginia terroir. Like the Cabernet Franc 2017, Lomax Reserve 2016 is also barrel aged for 20 months, mostly in American Oak; it’s well-integrated and not distracting in its intent. Deep cherries, coco,

herbs and a hint of mint all contribute, both aromatically and on the palate, to the primary, secondary and tertiary levels of this wine, start to finish…a great finish. The name Lomax appears in homage to an old neighbor and dear friend of the Kilyks’, and whose family transcends a century of history on their property. As Luke always says, “The wine tells me what it wants to be.” I think, however, that when it comes to the Lomax Reserve 2016, there just might’ve been a faint voice on the wind, whispering his own inspiring history to the vines. Lastly, Granite Heights Merlot 2017, a wonderful wine of great surprise. The hero grape of right bank Bordeaux, and certainly well represented around the world, merlot has quietly found a firm home in Virginia; and Granite Heights is a great address for this bottling. Dark fruit flavors of blackberry, plum, black cherry and ripe raspberry, GH Merlot 2017 is soft, yet ample. And as easy as it is to drink, there’s a grip that quickly gives it a unique framework and separates itself from the earlier wines. Perhaps it’s the 5% of petit verdot that adds tannic support; or perhaps it’s the 20 months aging in both French and American oak. Either/or, GH Merlot

2017 measures fully in all realms…resplendent fruit, firm tannin and a balanced finish. I was slightly caught by surprise that we ended our flight with this wine, but in hindsight, it made perfect sense. I think you’ll agree, should you run the same route. So, as you make your wine rounds this summer, head out to Opal and taste the gold at Granite Heights Winery. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! w

News You May Have Missed A MONTHLY DOSE OF LOCAL HEADLINES BROUGHT TO YOU BY FAUQUIERNOW.COM

Glory Days Grill opens its first Fauquier County location Warrenton residents have a new local hangout for juicy wings, burgers and beers. On April 18, Glory Days restaurant executives and local officials gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony to celebrate the opening of the family-friendly, sports-themed eatery's first location in Fauquier County, at 74 Blackwell Park Lane in Warrenton. “We're all about the food,” Gary Cohen, executive vice president of Glory Days, said. “Obviously, food first, it's always been what got us to the dance – so to speak – but if you really know anything about Glory Days, we really are a sports-themed concept.” “The other thing that we're famous for is sponsoring your kids' teams,” Cohen said. “We're out sponsoring little league teams, the soccer teams, the church organizations – whatever organization is in Warrenton – the high schools that are here, public schools, the private schools ... we sponsor everybody.”

‘American Idol’ singer, Fauquier native Mike Parker wows students in his hometown

“American Idol” singer and Fauquier County Public Schools alumnus Mike Parker sang for Grace Miller Elementary students recently for their first school-wide assembly since 2020. On March 29, Parker, who has been advancing steadily in “American Idol’s” competition, sang for the students and spoke words of encouragement, telling them they should not give up when things get hard, including their classes. Parker told students that if they want to get better at something, they will have to work hard to get there. He urged students to look to their teachers for support and to never let anyone convince them they can’t do something. Parker’s mother, DeJuanna Parker, who is a former FCPS English teacher, joined her son on stage, as did another Grace Miller student named Xavier – a big fan of the "Idol" singer.

Kettle Run High’s Kasey Willoughby is Fauquier County’s Teacher of the Year

Kasey Willoughby, special education teacher at Kettle Run High School, accepts “Teacher of the Year” award from Cedar Run District school board member Donna Grove. (FCPS photo)

Kettle Run High School special education teacher Kasey Willoughby has been named Fauquier County Teacher of the Year. A few of Willoughby’s proudest accomplishments are her creation of the special education program STAND (See Talents and Abilities not Disabilities) and establishing a Unified Sports program. STAND and Unified Sports allow inclusion opportunities for all students in social and sports activities. Superintendent David Jeck announced Willoughby will represent FCPS in the Washington Post’s 2022 Teacher of the Year competition. A fellow teacher said Willoughby is “‘the sparkle at the end of the hallway, a laugh that rings out, or a Christmas outfit that cannot be missed,’ and she brings this joy to her teaching and every student.”
