took piano lessons as a child. My mother made me. I hated it. It was tough going...as I told my mother, I just didn’t feel like I have any talent for it. And art — I’ve always wanted to be able to draw, it just fascinates me. So the only artistic talent I seem to have is writing, and I’m happy with that. But there are all kinds of people in this world, which, of course, is excellent. There are people who are good at those things I am not, especially, I have come to realize, in our community. Those who create, and care enough to share and promote the arts in our community. As I sat down to write my editor’s note I realized that somewhat by accident, this issue has a lot of art of all kinds in it. I realized that not only are there talented artists — in all sense of the word — in Fauquier, one pervading theme is not only creating art, but sharing it, bringing it to the community, and fostering that love in our young people. Gloria Faye Dingus was one of the first to really make the effort to bring music to the people of Fauquier by working hard to make sure that students who couldn’t afford musical instruments and instruction received them. That was the start of Drum & Strum on Main Street, and her son, Tim Dingus, has taken her dream to a new level with the creation of the Gloria Faye Dingus Music Alliance. This non profit organization is dedicated to bringing music and visual art to our community through Gloria’s, a performance and art display venue on Main Street in Old Town Warrenton. Proceeds raised are dedicated to young, aspiring musicians in need of instruments and instruction. The visual art community is thriving also, thanks in part to northern Fauquier artist Marci Nadler. Her gallery is not only for her own work, but a place for other local artists to exhibit their work and a place for her to teach art lessons. Not only that, she says, “The gallery will also be a community-building teaching and gathering space for musicians and writers as well as visual artists, where creative endeavors are shared to inspire the lives of others.” And in addition, we have a new business in our community dedicated to bringing literature to our community: The Open Book on Main Street. Fauquier residents, says part-owner Cammie Copps Fuller, should not have to go out of town to get the benefits of a small, community bookstore. Since its opening in March, Fuller has been concentrating on learning the reading preferences of Fauquier residents and fulfilling them, and also supporting local authors with a dedicated shelf and book signings. She also hosts book clubs and some writing workshops for all ages. So, the arts are alive and well in Fauquier County, which, honestly, doesn’t surprise me — this community continues to charm us all.

HONORING VETERANS Remembering Those Who Answered the Call to Service BY VICKI GINTHER, REFERENCE LIBRARIAN, FAUQUIER COUNTY PUBLIC LIBRARY
Americans have always been willing to answer the nation’s call to service in the cause of freedom and American ideals. The first half of the 20th Century gave birth to two global conflicts whose reverberations are still being felt in the world today. Idealistic and highly educated American soldiers joined the ranks of the American military to fight the “war to end all wars.” When World War I failed to produce that result, America’s “Greatest Generation” donned uniforms and joined ranks to fight World War II. Veterans Day, celebrated on November 11th, honors those Americans who have served in the military. It differs from Memorial Day and Armed Forces Day in that the former honors those who have given their lives in the nation’s military conflicts and the latter honors those currently serving in America’s armed forces. The celebration began as Armistice Day, first celebrated on the one-year anniversary of the end of World War I to honor those who gained the victory in World War I. On May 15, 1938, Congress formalized Armistice Day as a legal holiday. Between 1945 and 1954, a grassroots movement began to expand the concept to honor all those who had served in the nation’s armed forces. On May 26, 1954, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed legislation to formalize this change and renamed the holiday Veterans Day. For a short time in the early 1970s, under the Uniform Monday Holiday Act, the holiday was observed on the fourth Monday in October. In 1978 the observance was changed back to November 11th and it has remained so ever since.

RECOGNIZING LOCAL VETERANS
Since 2013, Fauquier County Public Library has remembered and honored local veterans with a photo tribute, Honoring Our Veterans. Prepared by the library staff who scans the photos and collects information and anecdotes about the veteran’s service, the collection includes over 200 photos spanning the time frame from the Civil War through Afghanistan and representing all branches of the military. The photo tribute will be on display at all three library locations November 1 – 24, is viewable on Flickr at flickr.com/photos/fauquierlibrary. PRESERVING HISTORY
Library
Over the years, the library has seen and heard about many first-hand accounts between soldiers and their families, including letters and diaries. The Library of Virginia (LVA) offers the opportunity to digitally save these memories through its Profiles of Honor Scanning Program – a partnership between the Virginia WWI and WWII Commemoration Commission and the LVA. The program creates digital images to be stored by the LVA and made accessible through both the LVA and Commission websites.

The documents become part of LVA’s Virginia Memory which includes approximately 100 digital collections that document Virginia’s history. These collections include photographs, maps, broadsides, Chancery records, Revolutionary War Virginia State Pensions, and much, much more. Many of the materials are also transcribed by volunteers. The transcriptions, along with a digital image of the document, are then added to the Virginia Memory website. To view the collection, learn more about how to contribute materials, or volunteer to transcribe materials go to virginiamemory.com. In the days leading up to Veterans Day, White Tables will be on display at each library location. The White Table is set in many mess halls on November 11 as a symbol for and remembrance of service members fallen, missing, or held captive in the line of duty. Each element on the table symbolizes something specific: A white tablecloth for the soldier’s pure heart when he answered the call to duty A black napkin for the sorrow of captive soldiers A lemon slice for the bitter fate of missing soldiers Salt for the tears shed by the soldiers’ families A turned-over glass for the soldier who cannot enjoy the meal

The display is patterned after the display in America's White Table by Margot Theis Raven, illustrated by Mike Benny. AS A NON MEDICAL HOSPICE, WHAT SERVICES DO YOU PROVIDE? We provide
traditional hospice services, the only difference is that we don’t give medications. Whether patients are in their own home or in a facility, we provide care and companionship. Sometimes just sitting there with them is beneficial, sometimes we read to the patients or listen to music with them. Reading poetry has a calming effect. And when we are there, that gives the caregivers time for their own needs, their own appointments, grocery shopping, that sort of thing. And of course, we provide bereavement support. When someone is passing or has passed, our team is there for them as well. Our feeling is that we want to help the families as well as the patients. ISN’T HOSPICE ONLY FOR TERMINAL PATIENTS? You don’t need to be terminal
to receive hospice help. We take care of more than people who need end of life tender care. We are also here for people with chronic diseases like MS or ALS or Parkinsons. The only condition to receive services is that you have to be facing a long term health challenge. We are here to support patients and families who are facing a great deal of stress that could continue for a long period of time. IS THERE A FEE FOR YOUR SERVICES? There
is no charge for our services at all.

or those with a terminal or chronic illness, life can get pretty scary and overwhelming. The same is true for the family members of the individual. Comfort and Care Support is here for families in our community and ready to help. Their goal is to lighten the load for families, and that’s exactly what they do, all with a staff of four and their team of volunteers. Warrenton Lifestyle sat down with Lauren Krastins, Executive Director of Comfort and Care Support, to look behind the scenes at one of the largest non medical hospices in Virginia which also maintains a loan closet of durable medical equipment that is available, free of charge, to anyone in the community who needs it.

DO MOST HOSPICES MAINTAIN A LOAN CLOSET? No that’s not typical of most
hospices. We are probably the second largest non-medical hospice in the Commonwealth, and we are the largest one doing durable medical equipment loans. WHERE DO YOU GET ALL THE EQUIPMENT AND SUPPLIES? It’s all donations, from different
sources, both big and small. Frequently when someone passes away their family donates the equipment, and we are absolutely delighted to receive it. It keeps the circle going. Then there are the people who come in and drop $10 in our jar. We also have occasional fundraisers. Medical hospices are reimbursed for their services, so their budgets are normally somewhere into the millions of dollars. Our budget is substantially lower because we are a non profit and operate completely on donations. If the cupboards get bare I will write a grant to see if we can get some money to make those purchases. The PATH Foundation and the Northern Piedmont Community Foundation are very good to us, and we are also looking for corporate sponsors.
the time! We are always looking to grow and searching for more volunteers. Even if someone only has an hour a month, maybe to sit down to read to somebody who can’t see anymore, it makes a difference. Every little bit helps.

people that are stressed to the absolute maximum, and they respond to it with the absolute best they have in themselves. And they grow from it, and it adds to our caring community. Inasmuch as the subject we deal with is sad, you’ll always notice laughter in here. People come in here, they get hugs. We try to genuinely be as warm and giving and outgoing as we can be, whether it’s to veterans or anyone else in the community who needs a chance to take a deep breath and get a hug. Hugs are free too.
to have a hundred, and we’d still have to sometimes turn people away. We could always use more because Fauquier County is growing year after year by 14-16 percent, and 20 percent of those people are over 50.
HOW BUSY ARE YOU? I’m so glad you asked that. We are constantly getting busier and busier. In 2016 we had 1,418 calls for equipment; so far this year we’ve had 2,450. We get about 40 calls a day for our services. We’ve served 24 patients and their families so far this year, with a staff of 35 volunteers.

HOW DO YOU FIND VOLUNTEERS? We try to get the word out, and welcome all who express an interest. We have a new program too. We are looking to work more closely with some of the schools to reach teenagers who need volunteer hours and train them to work with patients. IS THERE INTEREST IN THAT AMONG THE TEENAGERS? Believe it or not, yes. I think
it’s outstanding. We have one young gentleman now who’s already been out with patients and doing very well. He’s 17. He wants to be a doctor, and this is a great start for him. ❖

For more information on volunteering, visit hospicesupport.org/how-to-volunteer or call 540-3475922. Volunteers must pass a background check, and the training program consists of eight sessions over two days at the office on Fifth Street in Warrenton. Comfort and Care Support is collaborating with other organizations to improve and enhance their training. Once a volunteer is through the training process, they are assigned to visit patients.
A volunteer perspective Gary Carroll, a volunteer at Comfort and Care Support, feels that the support they offer is almost more important for the caregivers than the patient. “It’s so important to relieve the caregivers, because people sort of forget about them. Caring for a loved one with an illness — it drains them, I can see it in their eyes when I arrive. While I stay with the patient, they can go out and run errands, or have a cup of coffee with a friend. And they always look so refreshed when they get back.” The care and attention the volunteers give to the patients is also important. Gary continued, “Sometimes we read to the patients, but sometimes listening is the best therapy — knowing when to be quiet. Everyone, especially older people and veterans, has a story to tell, and sometimes it’s a story that their family has heard over and over. It gives them great pleasure to have a new audience. I get a lot out of the experience.” He said, “The training at Comfort and Care Support is excellent. We receive training from Physical Therapists that teach us things like how to help patients move around, get up to go to the bathroom, and how to pick them up when they’ve fallen without injuring yourself. We receive training from a Chaplain, who taught us to respect and support patients’ religious beliefs — or lack thereof — without imposing our own beliefs on them. We even had training from a military source who taught us about special concerns when helping veterans, especially those who have been in combat.”

My front yard resembles Lake Anna. But training and routine cannot be sacrificed. Today is one of those days where puppy rearing really is a pain in the neck. As a dog trainer, I have a lot of patience and I’m abnormally tolerant compared to the average owner. Why do so many people insist on welcoming a puppy into their home? They are tiny adorable terrors, but most people would be better off with an older dog. This puppy of mine is a nightmare at times. But this is my dog and I love her. Every little cute and annoying thing she does is the best. No questions asked. She is worth it.

Today, I am working on two things with her. First, we are continuing the long process of potty training. Then we are also going to address her new — undesirable — habit of yipping and barking while she’s alone in her crate. We have a routine. Toilet training. Mental Stimulation. Feeding meals. Play time. Toilet training. Spending time outdoors. Crate training. Again toilet training, and so on, repeatedly. I thank my lucky stars I have already established this routine so I can problem solve one thing at a time … My puppy has been outside a few times this morning. She has been fed in a fooddispensing toy. She had some time playing with the other dogs outside. She was in an exercise pen in the yard. I have to admit, I was super thrilled to see her happily soaking up the rain for a few seconds as I shuffled my way to bring her in. So many dogs will not go outside in severe weather. Now she is dry, she is happy, she is content, she is finally taking a nap. Then it is time to take her outside again. So I put on my boots, grab my jacket, put on a hat, shove a hand full of treats in my pocket, and reluctantly walk the puppy into the yard. Smarter people would leave an umbrella by the door rather than locked in the car down the driveway. Guess it’s time

to get another umbrella. We go outside together, my puppy is happy to follow me in the rain. I am drenched and my fuzzy PJs feel so soggy. BUT! She pottied! She went to the bathroom, outside, in the rain, on command. Success is when it all comes together after days, weeks, months of practice. The next hurdle: vocalization. I cannot tolerate the screaming. She sounds like a mutilated rabid fox hanging on for dear life. The sound buzzes in my ear and pierces my ear drums. I don’t think Bose makes headphones powerful enough to cancel this noise. But I must not react. Must not pay attention. Must not lash out. Must not engage. Must walk away. I must breathe. The 18-week-old Border Terrier is entering adolescence. Things are changing, becoming more distracting, challenging, hormones are raging, boundaries are being pushed. This is normal. First, I consider why she may be barking. Maybe because she is frustrated in her crate. Maybe because she is eager to be with the other dogs. Maybe she is over-tired from the morning activities. Maybe … she is just being a hormonal teenage pain in my behind. The struggle is real either way … we will get through this! We have to address the issue even when we may not know the cause of her behavior. This exercise I am going to do with her teaches a few things: • Barking and making noise removes attention from people (the opposite of what the dog may be trying to achieve) • When we throw temper tantrums, humans go away. This encourages self soothing. • Calm, settled behavior makes people re-appear. • For prolonged periods of quiet the dog may be let out to potty, play in the kitchen for a few minutes, or learn a new awesome skill as a reward. Ignoring the dog is not enough for most dogs! Sure the blogs, websites, youtube
WARRENTON LIFESTYLE
}
videos, etc. all say to just “ignore the dog.” Trust me, you need to take more action. This is a terrier(orist) and she is strongwilled, but luckily she is also motivated and awesomely infatuated by me (woop woop). In order for this exercise to be successful I must completely remove myself from the room to disconnect from her when she is barking, and then magically walk in once she is settled and quiet. This harsh contrast of hot/cold … on/off … black/white will help her learn better. This takes effort on my part, but in the grand scheme of things, I am happy to commit. Now, to implement the plan. Step 1: Ensure dog is fed, watered, played with, and recently went to potty outside (check!) Step 2: Make a list of chores around the house to do while practicing this exercise (check!) Step 3: If it’s in the evening, pour yourself some wine. If it’s mid-day, play reruns of your favorite Netflix show, or both (check!) Step 4: Begin the process (oh boy…) Lists! I love lists. I need to move and fold laundry, feed the cats and turtle, organize my desk, go through my sock drawer, clean some leftover dishes in the sink, dust the window sills, and fold towels to stack in the bathroom. That gives me enough to do around the house so I can ping-pong-along, entering and leaving the kitchen, where we keep her crate, during the exercise. Guess it’s time to clear out the spice cabinet! So I begin in the kitchen, sorting dishes and organizing the window sills. The second Agnes (that’s the puppy) starts to yip, bark, or scream, I simply walk out of the kitchen and move on to the next task in another room. I wait for her to be quiet for a few seconds and then ... I magically reappear in the kitchen … minding my own business. And so I move from the dishes to the laundry to organizing my sock drawer .... I go to and fro what seems to be a million times before we start seeing improvement. Most owners would try something maybe a handful of times and then say “screw it, this isn’t working,” but I know better. I know and realize on a daily basis that proper training takes time, patience, and a whole lot of repetition. I am over an hour into our exercise. She has settled down and is snoozing happily while I shuffle from room to room. Time to wake her up for another grueling potty break in the rain. Gotta remember to get another umbrella. Where are the treats? And the whole saga begins over again. It ain’t fixed until it’s fixed, so better keep at it. New habits take time and repetition, people! ❖

ave you ever heard anyone say, “I have so much stress, isn’t that great?” Probably not. Most of us think of stress as negative and something we need to rid ourselves of. Though it’s important to lower your bad or negative stress, it’s equally important to increase your positive or good stress. Most people do not separate stress into good and bad. Increasing self-awareness and learning to manage symptoms is key to maintaining your emotional well being. Stress is defined as anything that alters your homeostasis — good or bad. Bad stress is created when something (a situation or relationship) feels out of your control. Good stress usually involves that which you perceive to be within your

control, such as an assignment at school or a project at work that you can accomplish by working hard. Here’s great news: you have control if you have self-awareness. Learning how to respond in a difficult situation or with a difficult person will help to reduce your bad stress, even if you can’t change the person or situation. There is always some part of a situation which you can own and work on changing (good stress). Sometimes that will be something within yourself. Let’s use the story of a caterpillar as it turns into a butterfly. The caterpillar needs to experience the struggle of freeing itself from the cocoon. Without struggle, a caterpillar will not fully develop into a butterfly. The same can be
said of people. Without stress, a student would probably not study for exams and push themselves. Without the stress of deadlines, you may not reach your goals. Stress can sometimes energize you and help you get things done more efficiently, but it can also paralyze you. Learn to view stress as useful information — it’s a signpost. Where is it pointing? Is the stress helping you to reach your personal or professional goals or is it keeping you from functioning, causing you to shut down emotionally or physically? It’s true that too much stress, whether good or bad, can cause the body to shut down. Pay attention to your body and if you’re having health problems or you keep having tension headaches or unexplained back pain, it may be an indication that your stress level is too high. The problem with many women is that we are good at multitasking and being all things to all people. So much so that we can easily push past those early warning signs as we

head for a breakdown. Before there is depression and anxiety there is stress. In fact, stress and feeling overwhelmed are the complaints I hear most from my clients. Let’s talk about your children. Guess what? They also feel stress but they are unlikely to be able to name their feelings correctly. Children, like adults, will present with irritability, anger, and annoyance when their stress level gets too high. Helping your child to name their feelings and incorporate stress reducing activities (such as old fashioned play time) in their day will help them in becoming stress resilient. Children with high levels of stress will often present with headaches, stomach aches, and poor sleep. The physical symptoms are usually easier to notice. Stress is contagious. Have you ever been around someone who is always stressed out and worrying? Do you feel stressed in their presence? I do. On
unfair. Children and teens have worries, friendship problems, fears, social media stress, etc. Stress affects everyone regardless of age. Children can even feel stress more deeply since they have little control over their environment. How do you handle stress? Do you internalize or externalize stress? Women are more likely to internalize stress which can manifest in the form of anxiety, depression and emotional eating. Men are more likely to externalize stress which can manifest in the form of addictions, anger issues, and working too much. We can’t discuss stress without focusing on self-care, which is a key component of good mental health. Regardless of whether you have good stress or bad stress, you will need to implement selfcare and self-compassion. I define self-care as being good to yourself. This includes speaking kindly to yourself (no harsh criticism) and engaging in activities that bring you joy or calm you down. For me, self-care starts with saying no to others when I’m asked to do something that will cause me stress. When I say no to others, I am saying yes to myself. This is good advice for anyone who tends to be a people pleaser. Self care is not being selfish. As with all things in life and mental health, you must stay in the self-awareness zone to maintain your mental and emotional stability and be able to care for those around you. ❖

oon it will be time to start thinking about Christmas and what to give to friends and family. I’d like to share some techy things that would make good gifts. Smart Devices Voice-controlled devices such as AMAZON ECHO or ALEXA will continue to flood the market. You already know you can say something like “Call Arnold Saussagehanger” to your cell phone, and it dials for you. Or say “Wake me at 7 a.m.” and the alarm will go off in the morning. You can even say “switch on the Christmas tree,” and Alexa powers up the tree lights by turning on a specific intelligent outlet plug, which is really great when the outlet is behind the tree and unreachable without navigating around prickly branches. Just to clarify, usually you can’t talk directly to a smart device, yet. You have to control it via a phone app, an Alexa integrated device, or Google Home. When you talk to Alexa, “she” sends a command to the smart device which then performs the action. But make sure those smart devices can be integrated with Alexa and Google. With a SMART THERMOSTAT, on your commute home you can say “set the heat to 72 degrees;” by the time you are home, the temperature is comfortable. Some can also be set in an “ECO” mode, so it saves you money by influencing the speed the system heats up or cools down, and can turn the heat down a bit in the middle of the night. Give the gift of an upgrade, hardware or software Be aware that technology is constantly changing. It might be a

challenge to keep all your devices supported over the years to come. Just as with computers, they may need to be replaced as the technology becomes outdated. If you still run Windows 7, consider a NEW COMPUTER. In January 2020, Microsoft is pulling the plug on updates. So this might be the season to upgrade or replace your system. I highly recommend upgrading your computer system with a SOLID STATE DRIVE. Even new systems will run faster than ever with one of these. The newest MICROSOFT SURFACE
and MACBOOK PRO (great devices) have the solid state hard drive soldered onto the motherboard. In this case, it cannot be upgraded, so you might want to get the bigger hard drive right away. And while you’re shopping, don’t forget to grab a deal on an EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE and some FLASH DRIVES to back up your system and data. Mobile devices are getting faster, smaller, lighter, and more powerful. Wouldn’t someone on your gift list appreciate an upgrade? A NEW TABLET can be a great tool to check emails, watch videos, read e-books, listen to music, and surf the web even faster than ever. To keep your mobile devices charged and organized, consider a MULTI CHARGING STATION. Are you or someone on your holiday list a movie buff? Consider a MOVIE MEMBERSHIP. If you do so, choose the “owning it digitally” format so you can watch and stream your favorite film on various devices from almost anywhere. Recently, I became a member of the free Regal Crown Club. Genesis Home Improvement
A new beginning grows into a life purpose for Mark and Kim Jenkins BY HANNAH SAMLALL
I
n 2009, Mark and Kim Jenkins were spending multiple hours a day commuting into Northern Virginia from Fauquier County for their jobs. When life threw a few curveballs their way, something had to change. With Kim’s background in finance and Mark’s background in roofing and remodeling as a subcontractor, it seemed natural to embark on a journey of their own. After taking a leap of faith, Genesis Home Improvement was established in 2014. Genesis Home Improvement offers customized home improvement services, remodeling, insurance restoration, and more. They pride themselves on transparency and honest work. They even have a portal that customers can log into at any point during their project and see the status and everything that’s going on. “I was back into banking and we were running the business out of our house,” Kim said. Fast forward just one year and Genesis had so much business the Jenkins couldn’t manage it all on their own. After hiring their first part-time employee and continuing to grow the business, they decided it was time to move operations out of their home and into a leased space. After three years in Remington, they discovered that the Ritchie Millwork building was for sale. “After a lot of prayer and things aligning, it worked out and we were able to purchase it,” Kim said. These days, the team has grown to 22 employees. “Our goal is for people to come here and to enjoy where they work. We all work very hard, but we’re all a big family,” Kim said. “The business was formed out of a need and it continued to form. The mission came out of working together.” One aspect of their mission that has remained true and constant is their drive to create a carpentry trade program. “I was making the transition from my banking career to Genesis full time and everything kept pushing me in this direction,” Kim said. “I was in Leadership Fauquier and Mark and I were both Sunday school teachers and very involved in the youth group. A lot of the kids didn’t know what they were going to do after high school.”
Kim and Mark have seen the need for the program in the community, but it also hits very close to home. “I have high schoolers, so I’ve watched kids graduate who don’t know where to go,” Kim said. “Our oldest son is a hands-on person. I walked into his bedroom when he was ten and he was taking apart his computer and he put it right back together the same way. If I forced him to get an associate’s degree, I’d be wasting my money and his time because that’s just not who he is, and that’s okay.” For years, Mark and Kim have been working with Lord Fairfax Community College and Fauquier County Public Schools to establish the carpentry trade program. “It’s a craft, you truly have to be talented,” Kim said. “We want to highlight that and revitalize the future of trades in our county.” The program would be housed at their facility in the Ritchie Millwork building. They’ll be hosting a Revitalize the Carpentry Trade open house in November at their new location. One of the things Kim hopes to get across in the establishment of this trade program is that there’s so much room for leadership growth. “Some kids get out of high school and don’t have that desire, but end up having the desire to lead as they get into their 30s,” she said. If it hasn’t come across yet, Mark and Kim Jenkins are extremely passionate about their community. Ninety percent of their business is in Fauquier and Culpeper. “It’s neat to grow relationships with people and become parts of different communities,” Kim said. “If we’re doing a new roof or siding on a house, we get to see the end product all the time because we live in the community we’re working in. Trust goes a long way, too. We’re not the cheapest or the most expensive option, but people know they’re going to get an honest job.” Their employees truly take pride in serving the community they live in. In addition to serving the community through their work, Kim and Mark feel blessed to be able to give back to the community as sponsors for sports teams and different events. “We’re right here in the community, so we can see the people who are impacted by it,” Kim said. To get involved with the Revitalize the Carpentry trade open house, companies, community leaders or supporters should contact Kim Jenkins via phone or email, 540-404-8558 or kim@ghiva.com. ❖

Do you need a four-year degree to navigate it? Career and Trade Education at Fauquier High School BY FRANNIE BARNES

he path to success is not linear. Some people map out their career path at a young age, while others don’t know their trajectory until college or beyond. And what about those who don’t want to — or can’t afford to — go the four-year college route? Fortunately, there are alternatives to getting a bachelor’s degree, such as opting for a twoyear associate’s degree, applying for an apprenticeship or certification in a specialized trade, or an internship that leads to a career. Fauquier County Schools have created and implemented inclusive curricula that offer students education for many different careers and Fauquier High School (FHS) has talented staff and teachers who work with students to help them decide which path is best for them. It used to be that to prepare for a career in a trade meant going to a specialized school. Now, Career and Trade

of wiring in both residential to commercial construction. He said that the industry is “screaming for these students” and the program has grown rapidly and significantly, to the point where a second teacher has been hired to support the volume of students. “I tell my students to take advantage of this free education and learn everything they can because — in addition to a career in electricity — one day, they’ll probably own a home and can do the work themselves,” he said. Many students have gone directly into apprenticeships or jobs with independent contractors, and, White said, “With these skills you can get a job almost anywhere.”

Education (CTE) is offered within our public schools. These technical classes provide classroom lessons with hands-on skill development with many components, and some conclude with trade exams and certifications. Fauquier High School offers six CTE programs, many that prepare students to go directly into the trade they studied upon graduation. Qualified employees for some of these trades are in very high demand, and can offer excellent career opportunities right out of high school. Of course, going directly into the workforce is not the only option after a CTE program. “We’re trying to promote that while not everyone goes on to a trade as a nurse, electrician, or in the automotive field, for example, they can use the skills we teach here. They also have the option to go on to receive a two-year degree and have a great career,” said Mark Bjorkman, Guidance Director at Fauquier High School. Additionally, many of the CTE programs offer classes that can be taken as electives to learn applicable life skills. While all three high schools in the county offer specialty classes in graphic arts and agriculture, the bulk of trade education in the county is offered at Fauquier High School; currently this term, 81 students travel to FHS from these schools for CTE programs. Due to OSHA regulations and program popularity, not every program is accepting students.

and electrical. The three-year program gives students an introduction to each trade. Beginning with the Introduction to Building Trades course, students learn the fundamentals of working with tools, measuring, project management, and finish work. “We try to cover everything so students get a better idea of the different trades out there,” said Building Trades teacher Jared Zangari. As students progress through the program, they learn more about each specific trade, and the final capstone project is to build a modular home from start to finish. The home is later auctioned to the community. Upon completion of the Building Trades program, students have the ability to go directly into a career in the field and continue with hands-on experience, or further their education with a two- or fouryear college program. “The wave of the trades is increasing, and people are starting to realize the importance of these jobs,” Zangari added. Zangari is an example to students of the various job opportunities provided in trades; he came up through the education system, focused on Technical Education, pursued a career in the trade, and later came back to teach it to middle and high school students.
Electrical
Randy White has been teaching electrical classes at FHS for 24 years. Although electrical is covered at a high level within the Building Trades program, this threeyear program is focused solely on electrical work and delves deeper into the specifics

The two-year Auto Mechanics program covers everything related to the inner workings of a car, from tools to electronics, transmissions, air conditioning, and other essential mechanical work. At the end of the program, the student Automotive Service Excellence certification test is given. FHS’s program prepares students to go directly into the field, however, many do go on to further their education. Teacher Scott Freeman explained that many college programs can cost upwards of $50,000 and feels our local community colleges offer comparable associate’s degree programs that provide ample opportunities for careers. Many of his students have gone on to pursue business degrees at four-year colleges to further their opportunities in the field of management.
Auto Body
For students who have an interest in cars, but not what’s under the hood, FHS’s Auto Body program offers a three-year curriculum that covers the structural part of cars, from using appropriate tools and car parts to welding, painting, estimate repair, and everything in between. Students can begin the program as a freshman or sophomore and can earn their Inter-Industry Conference on Auto Collision Repair (I-CAR) certification — the industry standard for excellence in the auto collision repair industry — upon completion. These students are able to go directly into internships or get a job and receive on-the-job training. There are also higher education programs that follow, in trade schools or local community colleges. Not all students who take Auto Body classes go on to pursue a career in the trade. Many students take classes because they are interested in cars. And for those who do pursue a career, teacher Craig Canard tells his students to be prepared for a never-

only learn in the classroom, but when they move from Introduction to Level 1, they work in the community-based on-campus preschool. This program is designed to teach future teachers, and Cheryl Budd, child development teacher, said, “The Early Childhood Education Lab is a unique experience for both the high school student and the preschoolers who attend. The high schoolers receive first hand real-world experience in the dynamics of teaching, and it is a great first school experience for preschoolers. It is a win-win for everyone.” Students have the opportunity to further this education in Level 2 and work on setting goals and analyzing growth while continuing to work with the preschool children. Approximately 75 percent of the students who complete this program do go on to fouryear colleges to obtain a teaching degree, but students are prepared to work in the preschool setting at the end of the program.
Nursing Aide Program
Similar to early childhood education, the Nursing Aide program provides

several avenues for students who wish to pursue a career in health care. To become a Registered Nurse, higher education is required, but this program provides all the tools needed to go directly into a career as a nurse’s aide. Upon completion of the two-term program, students are eligible to sit for the Virginia Board of Nurse’s Aide certification exam. The popular program can only accommodate 20 students per term and, teacher Maryann Lamb explained, many students do go on to pursue a Bachelor of Nursing degree. Additionally, Fauquier offers classes for students in business, marketing, economics, and entrepreneurship which complement the trade courses and aid students in building a sustainable career without necessarily obtaining a college degree and its accompanying expense. It is clear that as the workforce changes, our educational system is in lockstep, preparing our students not just for whatever their next step might be, but providing them with valuable life skills that can be applied throughout their lives. ❖

Whether this is a result of her colorful disposition or her closeness to each painting she creates is up to interpretation. Nadler’s quaint, comfortable studio space is as welcoming and inviting as her personality. Easy to talk to and humble, Nadler tells of her first forays into art in childhood. “For as long as I can remember, drawing was my way of processing what I experienced in the world and expressing my feelings,” she says. As a shy child, she felt like drawing kept her company in a way. She would recreate characters from her favorite book illustrators, like Beatrix Potter, so much that her mother thought she might eventually be a children’s book illustrator as an adult. Both of her parents encouraged

her talent for art, even posing for her as she was learning to draw figures. In college, Nadler studied graphic design, doubting an ability to make a career out of art. After graduation, when she won first place in the National Society of Arts and Letters Regional Competition and at the urging of professors Robert D’Arista and Ben Summerford, she pursued an MFA in Painting at American University. She continued to study fine arts for the years following under Bill Calfee, Patricia Friend, and Stephen Pace, artists she calls remarkable. She credits family, friends, and teachers for helping her believe in her abilities. “I’m not sure whether we find our teachers in life, or they find us, but I am deeply indebted to the teachers I have had,” she says. who works with oils, acrylics, watercolor, and ink, Nadler has a story to tell about each one of her works. When asked where her inspiration lies, she says each location she paints has to strike her creativity more than once. For instance, if she passes the same tree on her commute and she notices it each time, eventually she will have to go paint it. “If I see a sublime moment in a landscape for instance, I hope that expansive moment of consciousness translates to the painting and is transmitted to the viewer,” she says. have been exhibited in galleries throughout the United States and even abroad. But even with all the accolades, she admits she doesn’t really consider herself successful unless her art connects with people. When someone remarks on a piece or has a reaction to it, these moments validate her talent in different ways. In 2016, she opened UnStable Arts in Middleburg to promote and exhibit local artists and provide an avenue for musicians, poets, and prose writers to debut their works. Then in 2017, the move to Marshall, where she now paints and runs her gallery business on Main Street, has her starting fresh with a new space to make her own. In the little walking town of Marshall, Nadler Fine Art (Studio and Gallery) will be undergoing a renovation inside and in concept. The studio holds piece after piece of Nadler’s beautiful art, some colorful, some dark, some landscape, some people. She also hosts other local artists in the space, to give them a venue for exhibiting and to introduce new artists to the community. But that isn’t all she has planned. “The gallery will also be a communitybuilding teaching and gathering space for musicians and writers, as well as visual artists, where creative endeavors are shared to inspire and enhance the lives of others,” she says. Nadler’s excitement is palpable when explaining how she wants to use the space to teach art lessons to others, children included. “I hope to be able to pass along the methods I’ve learned (how to ‘see’ things as an artist), and encourage others in their work,” she says. These classes and workshops can be enjoyed by those of all levels, from beginner to professional, as well as private and semi-private lessons in drawing and painting. If you get a chance to see Nadler’s pieces, be sure to look for an occasional fairy or bug snuck into the painting, a nod to her childhood and a way to add some sort of enchantment to her artwork. You can see her works on display at Nadler Fine Art, along with abstract paintings by Pennsylvania and New Mexico artist Robert Stark. ❖ NADLER FINE ART MARCIAMNADLER.COM 8355 WEST MAIN STREET, MARSHALL 540-724-1440 MIDDLEBURGART@GMAIL.COM FACEBOOK.COM/MARSHALLARTVA

The Open Book Creating a literary community in Warrenton BY GARY CARROLL

ou don’t need to leave Warrenton to discover the kind of magic and sense of community that you find in a quality local bookstore. Simply plan to visit The Open Book, the new bookstore conveniently located in Old Town next to Great Harvest bakery and coffee shop on Main Street. The three friends and partners who own and operate The Open Book — Chris Granger, Cammie Copps Fuller, and Rachel Sirene — all shared a dream of opening a true communityfocused bookstore in town. Folks in Fauquier County, they agreed, should not have to travel out of the county to encounter the in-person bookstore experience. And, of course, a deep love of books was a factor in their vision. Cammie, a writer herself, said, “My mom was a huge reader and brought us up with books. I was always the kid reading late into the night under the covers with a flashlight.” As their mutual interest in bringing a family-focused bookstore to Warrenton developed, the three friends searched possible locations where they could contribute to the economic vitality of Main Street. They found the perfect spot in the heart of downtown not far from the vibrant, successful Farmers Market — another spot where the local community comes together. Sitting at an outside table on a beautiful late summer day,

Rachel and Cammie talked about their dream store as a “beautiful way to make connections” and an “opportunity to have intimate conversations” away from the noisy current events world outside. They said they want their business to say to customers, “We’re so glad you are here.” Since its opening in March, The Open Book has already gained great popularity, not only because of its welcoming environment, friendly staff, and well-stocked shelves of books of every genre, but because of the frequent literature-related activities it sponsors. The store hosts many recurring and special activities for local families to enjoy. Many of these focus on children of every age and provide opportunities to “connect kids with kids.” For example, there are children’s story times, and book clubs for elementary, middle, and high school students as well as adults. Story telling competitions, meetand-greets with local authors, and writing workshops are sprinkled throughout the year. The shelves are stocked with a wide variety of literature with a careful combination of hot new picks and what Cammie calls a “select backlist,” which are simply books she likes and thinks should be offered to the community; The Shipping News by Annie Proulx is one of these, as is a selection of poetry. She is constantly adjusting the inventory as she learns the community’s interests. “Our customers really like historical fiction and current fiction. Our children’s section is really hopping, and our young adult books are also really popular,” she said. What are the best sellers in the store since they opened? It’s a toss up

between Where the Crawdads Sing, fiction by Delia Owens, and Educated, a memoir by Tara Westover. Support of local authors is also part of the objective of The Open Book. They provide a section of shelving in the front of the store devoted to these writers, and invite them for periodic workshops and book signings. The most popular book from a local author? “Jaded” by Warrenton author Kristy Feltenberger Gillespie, the first volume in her Nirvana series for young adults. Also selling well is Lily Barlow, the Mystery of Jane Dough, a mystery/romance set in Fauquier County, by Carla Vergot. In this day of digital books and kindles, Cammie doesn’t see this technology as a threat to her bookstore. “There’s an application for all the formats, and there are still people who prefer holding a tangible book, turning the pages,” she said. “As long as we get the books to the readers somehow, that’s the goal.” In addition to their “real” books, the store sells audio books through libro.fm, the first digital audio book company that allows customers to support their local bookstore with their purchases. Just choose a subscription at libro.fm, select The Open Book as your store, and start listening to a huge selection of choices from all sorts of different genres. But perhaps what best shows The Open Book’s desire to be a true part of the local literary community — both readers and writers — is the large, comfortable table in the center of the store. Customers are invited to sit and explore some of the books, and writers of all ages — both professional and

those starting out — are welcome to come and sit a spell, work on their current project, and maybe even connect with readers or other writers. It’s a place to relax and share a love of reading and writing. “The table is the backbone of our store,” said Cammie. “It illustrates what we’re all about. We could use that space for display, but we choose to have that for our community.” ❖ THE OPEN BOOK 104 MAIN STREET, WARRENTON 540-878-5358 OLDTOWNOPENBOOK.COM FACEBOOK: @OLDTOWNOPENBOOK

BY HANNAH SAMLALL
I
f you’ve lived in Warrenton for any significant period of time, you’ve most likely paid a visit or two to Drum & Strum in Old Town for any number of reasons since 1990. Whether it was to take your kids to music lessons, to see a show, to rent an instrument, Drum & Strum Music Center has been a staple of the community for almost 30 years. What you might not know is that there’s so much more to the Drum & Strum story than first meets the eye. Drum & Strum’s founder Gloria Faye Dingus was born in a small southwestern coal mining town deep in the Appalachian Mountains named Clintwood, Virginia. She grew up in a home rich with love, value, and integrity but little of anything else. They

were one of many families trying to make it through the day, unsure of what tomorrow would bring. Fast forward to many years later after marrying her sweetheart and starting a family, she opened Drum & Strum. What Gloria did not know when she initially opened the store was that she would soon discover the need for arts in this small community in Virginia her and her family called home. Over the years, Gloria gave away numerous music lessons and instruments to those in need, never expecting anything in return. Always by her side, her son Tim joined her in discussing dreams and aspirations for what their store could grow to be. “We always talked about things we wanted to do and things the community

needed,” Tim said. “She was a big philanthropist, into helping people and helping kids and people with music lessons if they couldn’t afford it. If they couldn’t afford an instrument, she would make sure she got them anyway.” In 2007, Gloria was diagnosed with stage four uterine and ovarian cancer and she ended up having to take a step back from the store in 2009. Tim took over and has continued to honor her legacy since she passed away in 2012. “About a year after she passed away, we formed the Gloria Faye Dingus Music Alliance,” Tim said. “We’re trying to continue her legacy and what she always wanted and what she taught us was to help other people.” The Gloria Faye Dingus Music Alliance (GFDMA) is a non-profit dedicated to

providing instruments and music instruction to children in need. GDFMA serves the community as an entertainment center, art gallery, educational facility, events venue, and community gathering place. Their mission is to enrich the quality of life, cultural diversity, mental wellness, and vitality of our community through music and the performing arts. In 2018, the GFDMA established Gloria’s, a performing arts center, art gallery, and multi-use space on Main Street in Old Town Warrenton. As the primary fundraising arm of the GDFMA, it has seen many artists since its opening, including both national and international artists of different genres, such as jazz, blues, bluegrass, country, rock, and more. Gloria’s invites collaboration from artists, organizations, schools and the general community to encourage the creation, joy, and understanding of artistic expression.”When we started, we really had a blank canvas,” Tim said. “I always heard from people that they wished they had a place to go to experience music. Most people have never experienced music like this, in a room that is optimized for listening.” After most shows, people can even go up and meet the musicians. “Years ago, a friend dragged me down to the Prism Coffee House in Charlottesville for shows,” Tim said. “When I went, I was floored. I had no idea that kind of music experience existed. I had never seen anything like that before.” Gloria’s hosts very well recognized bands, and Tim credits his many years

Although the community now has this space thanks to Gloria Faye Dingus’ thoughts and vision, there is still so much room for growth. “We’re always looking for volunteers,” Tim said. “We always need help with the different events we’re doing. We want to keep growing and expanding and with that comes the need for more volunteers. We need people for running concessions, helping to run the ticketing, and different things like that. We’re on the PATH volunteer hub and people can look us up there.” Gloria’s space is designed and sized to be flexible and responsive to the needs of other professional groups, community groups, and individuals who may want to rent it for diverse uses including art and dance classes, presentations, plays, movies, weddings, and receptions.
of experience in the industry and the connections he’s made over that time for his ability to bring those big names to Warrenton. He said, “I just have a lot of really talented friends. And that’s what we’re really trying to do for the community. You can drive to Alexandria or D.C. for good music, but now you don’t have to. You can get the same experience here in town and have a nice evening out.” As for the musicians, once they find out what the GFDMA is all about, they are very excited and supportive of it. Tim said, “Some of them struggled to find affordable instruments and music lessons when they were growing up, so they understand our mission and support it. We’ve even had musicians occasionally donate their

performance fee back to the Alliance.” At Gloria’s, there is something for everyone. There are shows from every genre. There are art galleries featuring local artists. “I want the community to know that this center isn’t just Gloria’s,” Tim said. “It really is the community’s space and I want the community to know that they can get out of it what they put into it. We really do want this to be a cultural hub of the community.” And it’s not just music; the Gloria Faye Dingus Center for the Arts wants to be a place where local artists can feel welcome and supported. “We’ve got a gallery room setup and a gallery committee that’s going to be working with artists and local artists to do shows and exhibits like that,” Tim said. “Local artists will have a place to hang their art and do showings.” Over time, the store and the center have evolved so much. Gloria always said, “Every community needs a place where the arts can call home and that everyone can come and feel welcome and not feel like they’re on the spot or being judged, but just a place that everyone can participate.” ❖ THE GLORIA FAYE DINGUS MUSIC ALLIANCE CENTEROFWARRENTON.ORG 92 MAIN STREET, SUITE 104, WARRENTON INFO@GLORIASMUSIC.ORG

Staying Connected Across the Miles BY STELLA VERADUCCIA
T
he holiday season is a joyous time, but it can also be a challenging time for families with loved ones far away. Staff Sergeant Oscar Martinez of the Marine Corps Career Center in Warrenton, recalls the challenges that he and wife Mariana faced when he was deployed to Afghanistan seven years ago during their first year of marriage. Their separation began before the holidays, as he was away for work-ups to prepare for his mission as commander of a combat platoon of sixty-five Marines. It was his first deployment and her first year as a military spouse, uncharted territory for both of them. They kept in touch as often as they could through phone and video calls, emails, and even old-fashioned snail-mail letters, which arrived sporadically throughout his deployment. Other types of “family connections” also helped to see them through it, too. The Marine Corps Family Readiness Officer connected Mariana with other families who had members on deployment, and there she found a sisterhood of support. Especially helpful was the practice of pairing younger or newer spouses with older or more experienced ones to serve as

mentors. They formed Facebook groups and joined together to pack and ship care packages to their Marines. Mariana also tapped into her own family; she joined the PTA and spent time as a classroom volunteer for her young niece and nephew. Her favorite activity was to engage the kids in drawing pictures, writing letters and making cookies to send to her husband’s platoon. SSgt. Martinez says, “It was like Christmas every day” whenever these packages arrived, even if they couldn’t read the scribbled “letters” from their four-year-old pen-pals. For his part, SSgt. Martinez says his fellow Marines became his secondary family. They banded together to make sure that everyone was doing well, “reminding each other of our mission, our country and our own families.” He also credits the chaplain attached to the unit as a great support; skilled in leading nondenominational conversations, often about books, the chaplain served as a source of mentorship and companionship. One series of talks focused on the book by Gary Chapman called The 5 Love Languages; this inspired SSgt. Martinez to start a longdistance private book club just for his wife and himself, and they read and connected over the Harry Potter books together while he was away. He sums it all up by saying, “Everyone is quick to thank Marines for their service, but in many ways the military spouse is the more resilient one. The spouse is the hardest job in the Marine Corps.” Military spouses often play another important role in keeping families connected, serving as formal liaisons between command leadership and the families within that command. In the Navy, for example, the “Ombudsman” is a volunteer position for a spouse who has been screened, trained, and appointed by the commanding officer to serve as a family resource for official information and access to support services. Navy Ombudsman Lisa Pecci, wife of Lieutenant Commander Nick Pecci currently stationed in Norfolk, recalls often making the first calls to tell sailors at sea that their babies were born. She also describes how military spouses and families come together to pack and ship holiday packages to their loved ones and prepare full Thanksgiving and Christmas dinners to celebrate all together. “It has become our tradition,” she says. “This may not be the family we were given, but it’s the family we created, and the connections last long after the deployments end.” Modern technology makes it easier to stay connected, but that wasn’t always

the case. K.C. Bacher, a retired Air Force lieutenant colonel from Haymarket, recalls being stationed in remote parts of Guam, where earthquakes were frequent, mail delivery was slow, and telephone service was spotty. But they did have MARS, the Military Auxiliary Radio Service, a network of amateur ham radio operators who help service members keep in touch with family
“The holiday season is a joyous time, even more so when staying connected with loved ones across the miles.” back home. “You’d put in a request for a call,” says K.C., “and they would schedule it within a week or so. Then one ham operator would connect with another, who would connect with another, till they got to the one with your family member lined up at the other end.” Every transmission had to end with the word “Over” according to ham protocol, and K.C. laughs when he remembers saying “I love you. Over” to his wife Susie back in Hawaii. There are several other key ways that military families stay connected when separated by deployment or other assignments: · While the program names may differ slightly, all the service branches have something like a Family Readiness Group or FRG, to keep families informed and supported during their members’ time with a unit, especially during deployment. FRGs organize welcome programs for newly arriving families, social activities, back-toschool supports, and holiday celebrations. · United Through Reading, which serves all branches of the U.S. armed forces, allows service members to video-record themselves reading children’s books aloud and share the recordings with their families. Not only does this help relieve some of the stress of separation and keep families connected but, like all good bedtime stories, it also helps inspire a love of reading. · More than 200 USO Centers around the world provide service members with comfortable places to relax and connect while off-duty or traveling, with free Internet

connections and phone services. For service members in combat zones, Operation Phone Home is the USO’s private telephone network, allowing free phone calls and access to computers with free high-speed Internet. The challenges of staying connected across the miles are not confined to military families; consider the Dyrholm family of Warrenton … and Aalborg, Denmark. Jackie and Peter Dyrholm met in Aalborg when she was working there for a year; when her work visa expired, they both returned to Warrenton and were married here in 2004. At that time, Peter’s young daughter Emilie Oleson remained in Aalborg with her mother, but the Dyrholms were committed to maintaining a strong relationship with Emilie; they’ve traveled to Denmark frequently and also brought her here to visit, especially after their daughter Emma was born. As the two girls grew older, the whole family grew closer, helped by ever-evolving technology; they now connect daily through FaceTime, Instagram and other platforms. Fifteen-year-old Emma, a sophomore at Fauquier High School, loves getting “big sister advice” from Emilie, who enjoys joining in on family events from 4,000 miles away. Last year, for example, she helped Emma do her Homecoming make-up via video-chat. The Dyrholms also use technology to stay connected with the foreign-exchange students they have hosted in their home over the years. One holiday tradition they enjoy is to Skype with their Spanish students on New Year’s Eve to join in their custom of eating twelve grapes at midnight. Through Facebook, the Dyrholms also keep in touch with Peter’s parents in Denmark, Lea and Per Strandridder, to share messages, pictures and videos of family events. But they don’t rely solely on technology to stay connected; they also know the importance of being together. Emma will spend this summer with her grandparents and sister in Denmark, and Peter and Jackie will join them for their vacation. A family tradition is to spend the holidays in Denmark every other year; in the Danish custom, they spend Christmas Eve decorating the tree at the Strandridders’ home then walking around the tree and singing carols before having a traditional Christmas dinner and opening gifts. Being together strengthens the bonds that sustain them when apart. The holiday season is a joyous time, even more so when staying connected with loved ones across the miles. ❖

Experiential Dining in Upperville Micheal Sparks’s Underground Kitchen Pop Up Dinner comes to Fauquier County
BY PAM KAMPHUIS
“C
ome here, girl.” Micheal Sparks enveloped me in one of his signature bear hugs and shook hands with my husband. He was dressed in a long, flowing...I’m not quite sure what...over dress pants, which, as you realize as you get to know him, is his signature style. “Good to see you again. Here’s your cocktail.” He handed me a gorgeous glass with a moonshine concoction garnished with blackberry and raspberry. “Just a taste, please,” I said. “What? Not drinking tonight? I don’t want to hear that, girl.” “Micheal, I have to take notes and write an article about your dinner.”

“Oh, don’t worry about that, honey, tonight we’re going to party!” “Well, I also have to drive.” “Oh, don’t let that stop you. We’ll grab you an Uber.” An Uber? Has he looked out the window? Taken note of how he got here? Not only are we in Fauquier County, we’re in Upperville. It’s pitch black outside and the feel of the location is of rural remoteness. “I don’t think so, Micheal,” I laughed. “What, there are no Ubers here?” This is a foreign notion to Micheal, who lives in Richmond but spent many years in New York City as a designer for Calvin Klein and Louis Vuitton. “Well, I haven’t tried it, but I’m guessing not.” I had met Micheal once before at one of his dinners in Charlottesville. He is an enthusiastic foodie and the founder of the Richmond-based Underground Kitchen and its well-known gourmet pop up dinners that occur usually all over the South, with the exception of a quick trip up north to host a dinner at the James Beard House in New York City this summer, which went, he said, “Fabulously.” Underground Kitchen promotes up-and-coming chefs of color and female chefs who sometimes get overlooked by the media. “We give our chefs carte blanche to go beyond their culinary comfort zones to create unforgettable menus that leave a lasting impression,” Micheal explained. On this evening in October, we were experiencing his UGK: New Americana tour.

“Upperville?” I asked. “How on earth did you decide to come to this little town?” After all, Underground Kitchen last performed multiple dinners in the foodie city of Charleston, South Carolina, and, of course, the aforementioned New York. “Well, it turns out my business partner Kate grew up here and thought it would be a great place for it. And our featured chef tonight, Penn Kinsey, went to school at Foxcroft School.” A lifelong food lover who grew up in the restaurant business, Penn created her first dinner party, featuring Coq au Vin, while in high school in Middleburg. She now runs a restaurant in Park City, Utah, but was delighted to return to her old stomping grounds. Unfortunately, I am neither a chef nor a photographer, so I can’t really comment in the food other than to say that, as a lover of gourmet food, it was one of the best meals I’ve ever tasted. The venue, Buchanan Hall, was decorated to the nines, with one long table with elegant place settings, multiple wine glasses for wine pairings with each course, candles, and stunning florals. It turns out, actually, you really don’t need to drink much to really enjoy the experience. There are seven courses, and although each one was small, it all added up to a very satisfying dinner. A few sips of the wines paired with each course was perfect and let the food, the main attraction, shine. Of course, the wines were nothing to sneeze at, either. The Amuse Bouche, the precursor to the first course, was accompanied by a Veuve Cliquot champagne, and the accompaniants to the following courses ranged from Newton to Pippin Hill to Smoke Tree. But the food? You can see the whole menu in the sidebar, but my personal favorites were the Yellowfin Tuna Tartare on a wonton crisp, which almost stole the show on its own. The Chicken Fried East Coast

Oysters — the fried crust really tasted like the best southern fried chicken crust you’ve ever tasted, until you get into the center to the oyster. Amazing flavors together. The Pan Seared Diver Scallops where close behind on my list of favorites, as was the palate cleansing granite “shot” (liquid instead of the customary frozen sorbet type) with grapefruit, orange, and something else that made it the tiniest bit spicy. And bread pudding is a favorite of mine personally, so the Apple Cinnamon Brioche Pudding obviously went over extremely well with me. The crowning touch was the vanilla bean whipped cream, which emphasized the vanilla almost to the taste of vanilla ice cream. The long table, as it turns out, is strictly on purpose. Micheal’s intention is to encourage a

family style experience, to create a friendly atmosphere where people make new friends and interact with each other more so than if everyone was seated at separate tables. This is a fundamental ideology of Micheal’s: the power of food to foster relationships. Micheal said, “This is a movement, this is not a snooty foodie thing. It’s about friends and neighbors and bringing people that share a love of food and wine together. We want to bring this country back together, away from politics; it’s all about love. And if you are part of that movement, you are part of our family.” ❖ photos courtesy of The Underground Kitchen

UNIQUE, SIDE DISHES FOR YOUR THANKSGIVING TABLE
T
he holidays are here, and it’s time to start cooking! For Thanksgiving, the turkey, of course, is the main attraction: perfectly browned, juicy, and tasting of flavors you may not have experienced since last year. But the turkey can’t carry the day alone — a true Thanksgiving feast involves a multitude of side dishes usually featuring seasonal vegetables that also may not have made an appearance since last year. But why not up the ante a little this year? Instead of plain old squash, present your table with a light, fluffy squash souffle, and instead of a dish of mashed sweet potatoes, serve them in orange cups topped with marshmallows. This will add a gorgeous colorful dish to your table that the kids will totally be attracted to… who doesn’t love marshmallows that have been perfectly browned looking like they just came from over a campfire?
ORANGE MARSHMALLOW SWEET POTATO CUPS 12 SERVINGS INGREDIENTS 6 oranges ¼ cup orange juice 6 sweet potatoes, med. to large 6 tbsp. softened butter cup brown sugar, firmly packed
DIRECTIONS 1. Prepare the orange cups: cut the oranges in half, juice them, and remove remaining pulp with a spoon so the inside is smooth. Reserve ¼ cup of the juice. (enjoy the rest!) 2. Prepare the sweet potatoes: peel, cut into chunks, and boil until fork tender. Drain and mash. 3. Combine the mashed potatoes with the butter. Add the brown sugar, and spices and combine well. Add the orange juice a little at a time until desired consistency is reached. It should be firm and not soupy.
54
{ NOVEMBER 2019 |
1 tsp. cinnamon ½ tsp. ground ginger ¼ tsp. ground nutmeg ½ tsp. salt 12 large marshmallows
4. Scoop the mashed potato mixture into the orange cups, do not overfill. Smooth the top with a spoon so it’s level with the height of the cup. 5. Place a marshmallow in the center of each cup. 6. Bake at 350 degrees for about 20 minutes or until marshmallows begin to brown. Watch carefully since once they start to brown they’ll burn quickly. If you have leftover mashed potato mixture, you can serve it separately as is, or smooth it into a casserole dish and top with marshmallows and bake as above.

THIS THANKSGIVING, MAKE TRYING NEW WINES A TRADITION
local expert THE EXPERT:
Mark Luna
HIS EXPERTISE:
Wine
BY MARK LUNA
A
nother November is upon us and Thanksgiving, as I wrote last year, is still my favorite holiday. Traditions are many this time of year, all seemingly targeted towards that one weekend when friends and family gather for an autumnal feast, to share stories of their year, hopefully indulge in some laughter, perhaps some football and, certainly in my house, some great wines. Traditions, however, aren’t always bound by rigid rules. New ideas can breathe fresh air into old customs, helping to keep time-honored practices from getting stale and, let’s face it, boring…this is where wine enters the room and instantly changes it. As for our culinary traditions of Thanksgiving, usually a turkey with the side dishes, plus a collection of vegetarian offerings, I’ve always tried to bring new wines into the fold, not relegating myself to the same bottles every year. In and of itself, that is my own little tradition within the tradition. This year, I’ve decided to add some wines that come from a place that has been around seemingly forever, a land for which I will always give thanks for its contributions to the wine world, and my own personal wine happiness, Sicily. The island of Sicily holds an extraordinary place in human history. From the Phoenicians, Greeks and Romans to the Byzantines, Arabs and Goths, royal dynasties ruled the island for millennia, and all contributed in making Sicily what it is today. Stunning art, literature and architecture are equally matched by an incredibly diverse and complex gastronomy, also reflecting

the countless contributions made by the different groups who settled there. Wine production dates back to the Greeks and Romans, and much of the revolutionary advancements made in farming and winemaking techniques occurred in Sicily. Today, Sicily ranks fourth in total (Italian) production, and first in land under vines, region-wise. What has always made Italian wines great is the countless indigenous varietals, and Sicily doesn’t disappoint in that category. White wine grapes include Catarrato, Grillo and Insolia, as well as the red wine grapes Nero d’Avola, Frappato and Nerello Mascalese…they truly define Sicily’s wine greatness. And this is what will be on my Thanksgiving table this year. Hailing from the farthest tip in southeastern Sicily, the wines of Azienda Agricola COS are amongst Sicily’s finest. The namesake winery of lifelong friends Giambattista Cilia, Giusto Occhipinti and Cirino Strano (COS) was founded in 1980 and is revered in the Ragusa Province, in the town of Vittoria. As stated earlier, wine production dates back to the Greeks and Romans… the winery itself dates back to the 1880’s. For COS, their land is everything, and preserving its health is paramount. As Giusto states, “the vineyard is like our life’s savings in the bank, so we must protect it.” COS has worked organically since their outset and was an early practitioner of biodynamic viticulture, starting in 2000. They were certified (Organic) as of 2007. As for Vittoria, the most famous of the wines from this area is the Cerasuolo do Vittoria, a beautiful red wine blend of Nero d’ Avola and Frappato, and whose name is derived from the word cherry, referring to its bright cherry color. One of my favorite wines is the COS Pithos Bianco 2018. Made from the grecanico grape, a local variety of garganega (of Soave fame), it is both fermented and aged in amphora (Pithos in Greek). Honeygold in color, Pithos Bianco is floral, with accented fruits of melon and citrus. Hand harvested from 12 year old vines, there’s a youthful freshness to the wine, yet it’s mature in its character. An excellent complement to an array of Thanksgiving foods, it’s a wonderful way to start the feast. Of the two red wines that will be joining Pithos Bianco on my table, the first is the COS Frappato 2018. A traditional varietal of the Vittoria area, Frappato is truly unique. While usually blended with other red grapes, it makes an attractive, lively wine on its own. Aromas of violet, strawberry, cherry and spice transfer beautifully into a palate of equal excitement. It’s a light-bodied red wine, gently tannic and excellent both with food and by itself. Also hand harvested, COS Frappato 2018 is aged in concrete vats and comes from 15 year old vines. And finally, my big wine of choice will be the COS Cerasuolo di Vittoria Classico 2015. A blend of 60% nero d’ Avola and frappato, this wine is sourced from estate vineyards, hand harvested from 25 year old vines. As for its profile, the frappato brings lightness, perfume and fresh fruity aromas, while the nero d’Avola adds darker color and fruit, and is fuller bodied. It’s moderately tannic. All three of these beautiful wines come in around $40 on the shelf. And for one of the great food and wine holidays of the year, that’s a deal. I wish you all a wonderful Thanksgiving and hope you take a chance on trying a new wine… there’s no better way to keep a tradition going. Until next time, Happy Vino’ing! ❖
