f anyone’s stopped by the office lately, you have probably noticed I haven’t been around as much as usual. I’ve been working mostly from home because I have a new puppy! A 12-week-old Golden Retriever who has just stolen our hearts. Once he gets a little more of a handle on some training, I’ll occasionally bring him to the office, so please stop by to say hi. I love it when my readers stop in. As the editor of a hyperlocal magazine, I am always looking to support local businesses. But all local businesses don’t have brick and mortar storefronts in town. Many are artisans working from their homes and selling their products online. You can read about some of them in our Shopping Local Online, and I encourage you to check them out as you start your holiday shopping. I put this article in this October issue because many products are made to order, so the artisans need time to fill their orders. So don’t wait till the last minute. We’ve covered a few in this article, but there are many more. Did you know it’s easy to shop locally on Etsy? Search for your product, and in the results window, click “all filters”, and fill in your town in the “shop location” field on the left filter sidebar that pops up. Voila! All local sellers. Speaking of supporting local businesses, stop by the Warrenton Farmers Market on Saturday Mornings for some fresh flowers from Lill’s Flower Shop. Eleven-year-old Lillian White has carved a little plot of land out of her family’s property where she grows fresh flowers. The Tulip Poplar of Buckland Oaks The loss of a Broad Run historic tree brings to mind the rich history of Fauquier County. It is with deep regret we had to say goodbye to the oldest resident of Buckland Oaks. She was a beautiful and mighty Liriodendron tulipifera, commonly referred to as a Tulip Poplar. She was not as tall as she used to be since her main stem fell many, many years before Buckland Oaks ever existed. Regardless, she stood over 70 feet high and had a spread of over 60 feet. The circumference of her trunk was 204 inches (17 feet). Her estimated age is 234 years old. A quick calculation gives her birth year as early as 1787. Contemplating this, it brings to mind the history that the tree has witnessed over the years. The Town of Warrenton grew from a settlement that sprawled from the crossroads of Falmouth-Winchester and Alexandria-Culpeper roads where a trading post called the Red Store was located. The first Fauquier Courthouse was built in 1764. The seventh courthouse stands today with a bell added in 1815 just after the Town of Warrenton was incorporated on January 5, 1810. Maybe Richard Henry Lee and John Marshall strolled by on their horses and admired her beauty or even Thomas Lee, who owned 4,200 acres in Fauquier County and was part of the powerful Lee family of

Virginia, saw her in the distance as he traveled down the road. His son, Richard Henry Lee, who signed the Declaration of Independence, donated part of this land to establish Warrenton. One other notable resident of the time was Presley Neville O’Bannon, known as the “Hero of Derne,” was born in Fauquier County in 1776. In 1805, he was a US Marine and answered the call of General William Eaton for 100 marines to take the fight to Derne, the inland stronghold of the enemy and chief fortress at Tripoli. O’Bannon in turn recruited seven Marines to rescue US prisoners at Derne in eastern Libya. The Mameluke sword, worn by US Marine Corps officers commemorates this heroic event and in appreciation for services rendered on “the shores of Tripoli”, is forever commemorated in the second line of the Marines’ Hymn. O’Bannon road is on your left, halfway on your way to The Plains on John Marshall Highway. As time marched on into 1861, she heard and felt the battles of the Thoroughfare Gap and Second Manassas in and around our Broad Run Post Office. Before the Thoroughfare battle, the Confederate soldiers burned Chapman’s Mill, affectionately known as Beverly’s Mill, in an effort to keep the Union soldiers from exploiting it. She may have witnessed the billowing smoke rise over the hills. At the same time, she may have harbored soldiers on both sides who either camped beneath her canopy or climbed her limbs to gleam the valley to the left and the right. She also may have witnessed the second bellowing plumes of smoke in 1998 when arson claimed the historic mill. Time travels quickly from President Teddy Roosevelt, on a wager in 1907, riding his horse

from Washington DC to the Warren Green Hotel and back for a speedy return to set a standard for the US Army, to the periodic circling of the International Space Station today. From the meager beginnings of our country to the marvels of modern innovations and technology, she has stood with dignity and grace as a silent sentinel, recording history in the rings of her tree. We were blessed to be her caretakers for over 25 years,

and we are heartbroken to lose her. We are going to miss the fluttering whisper of the leaves as the wind waved her branches through the breezy, lazy days and those of remnants of hurricanes. We hope and pray her legacy continues with the many Tulip Poplar trees that dot our Buckland Oaks community and surrounding area. Rest in Peace, Tulip.

alloween is back! You will probably enjoy having kids come to your door saying the usual, “Trick or treat.” Then you let them pick some candy and send them on their way. No harm done. But there are tricks out there in the cyberworld. What would you do if your computer suddenly screamed at you with its loudspeakers: “This is the FBI. Your system is compromised. You violated copyright laws by watching pornographic films. Follow the instructions on the screen immediately or we will come by and arrest you.” The screen is overwhelming; it might even show your face. The voice doesn’t stop, and you can’t move the cursor. You see flashing messages on your screen and a clock counting down, saying you have 7 hours to react and pay money or a number of Bitcoins to stop your arrest. What goes through your head? These computer messages are phrased intentionally to scare people into feeling guilty. The screen might say that you or someone in your household did something bad. Or that your computer has been hacked, and your information and

compromising photos will be emailed to everyone in your address book, unless you pay. This is a scam. There are many kinds of scary scams, all with the same pattern. Their goal is to frighten you into accepting that you have to follow the instructions on your screen and react right now; waiting will make things worse, “But do not worry, just call this number for help.” The voice on the other end usually claims to be technical support. But first they need remote access to your system in order to stop the “hacker.” They might say, “We are Microsoft associates and notice that your system has problems. But do not fear, we can help. Just let us log and resolve the issue for you.” Sometimes these are even unsolicited phone call scams. I have gotten scary calls from people purporting to be Comcast that offered help, and even from people pretending to be Amazon. The usual pattern is that something is wrong with my internet or an order I placed. Two days ago, I received a text message saying, “Sorry, but FedEx could not find a safe place to put the package, so it has been sent back to the warehouse.” But if you click on the only clickable part of this

message, you are forwarded to a fake FedEx site. “Do not fear...” should be your cue to hang up, turn off the computer, or delete the message right away. What do these scary scams all want from you? Your money, personal information, passwords, logins to companies you shop from, your credit card, or even your bank account. These essential pieces of personal information are bought and sold on the “dark web,” on sites where people can trade anonymously. Even without a password, an email address can be used. Scammers can pose as you with your email address to cause havoc by sending bogus emails to all your friends. I have seen cases where fake emails that tell a sad story about an illness or accident and ask for money to help. There is a phone version of this “pity scam” that often preys on senior citizens by pretending to be a relative in

trouble. The grand-daughter was attacked, her jaw broken, and her cellphone and money were stolen on a vacation (maybe that’s why you don’t recognize her voice or the phone number.) She doesn't want you to call her parents, because they were against the trip to begin with, and so on, until you are tricked into paying, thinking you are helping your granddaughter. The scariest scam of all is when you get a message saying that all your data is encrypted, and for so many bitcoins they will send you the encryption key. The really bad news is that you really do need that encryption key; there is often no other way to restore your data. This is called Ransomware. You might have read in the news about the Ransomware case that shut down the Colonial pipeline some weeks ago; according to one news site, they asked for 75 bitcoins, worth $4.4 million. Yes, trick or cheat scams are more expensive every year. Ten years ago, you were asked for a credit card payment, but after you realized it was a scam you could call your credit card to stop the payment. So, they began asking for money orders or gift cards. Just last week, one of our clients was luckily stopped by the grocery store clerk, when she wanted an Apple gift card for $500. The clerk told her this was probably a scam. Instead of paying, she brought her computer in to us, in order to make sure that the scammers had not left viruses and Trojans behind, or traces that might allow remote access. The savviest scammers ask for payment in bitcoins. This is a difficult procedure, but the scammers give you precise information and links that tell you exactly how to deal with crypto currency. And the price has gone up. Years ago, when a scammer asked for half a bitcoin, you were only out $150. Today, half a bitcoin can cost $20,000!

Scooter Takes a Walk Warrenton resident Norma Thatcher talks to Warrenton Lifestyle about her engaging and beautifully illustrated children’s book, published this summer, featuring a little dog who takes a tour around Warrenton’s Main Street visiting local businesses. BY PAM KAMPHUIS

Scooter the dog is well known in her hometown of Warrenton. She and her owner Emma take a walk up and down Main Street every day to greet the shop owners. One spring day when her leash is untied, Scooter makes the decision to take the usual walk all by herself. Children will be delighted in Scooter's adventures as well as in the kindness and generosity of the people in Old Town.

Is this your first book? How long have you been working on it? Both reading and writing have been of high importance my entire life. The idea for the Scooter book has been rolling around my head for over ten years. I had even put together a storyboard at one point, but never took that “next step.” Last spring as I was anticipating my 70th birthday, I remembered a friend’s firm but friendly encouragement to publish the book.

What gave you the idea for this book?

There were two parts of inspiration. Scooter was a real, very sweet black and white rescue dog with four white paws who belonged to my daughter and sonin-law. And I love my town of Warrenton, its shops, the friendly people, and the atmosphere. My children grew up here and participated in the events depicted in the book. I thought the story of a wellknown dog in a small-town community who gets the opportunity to go shopping on her own would delight children.

Why a children’s book?

Of any role I’ve ever had in my life, my favorite is being a mom and grandmother. It’s vital for children to be read to for as long as they’ll listen. Even when a child can read on his or her own, we need to read to our children.

The artwork is very engaging. Who did the illustrations? Why did you choose her?

For a children’s illustrated book like mine, an illustrator can make or break the book. I knew that I didn’t want a cartoonish type of look; I wanted beautiful artwork that would draw a child into the story. There is a ton of advice online in finding an illustrator. I didn’t take any of it. I wanted a personal connection to an illustrator. My friend and website designer/developer Michelle Coe of BlueSkyPhoenix connected me with Loralyn Noragong from San Jose, CA, and we bonded instantly. Even though she had no experience in illustrating a children’s book, and was not used to drawing puppies or people, she felt called by God to reach out to me.

What was the publishing process like? And how did you find a designer and printer?

The ability to self-publish meant that I didn’t have to find an agent or a big-name publisher. I researched and studied and figured out the various steps to take to get one thousand copies of my book printed. A friend

recommended the company Allen Wayne in Vint Hill, and they were fabulous to work with. Sarah Lerner’s design work included placing the text onto the illustrated pages. She was so patient with this first-timer. Even when I decided at the last minute to change the font style, her “no problem” attitude reassured me I had chosen well.

I thought most self-publishers go with print-on-demand and sell their books on Amazon. I understand your book is not on Amazon?

Anyone can put a book for sale on Amazon. My book is for children but the message to parents is this: Support small businesses. Shop locally. When you can, instead of going to big box stores, go to your town’s Main Street and shop where the money stays in your town or city. That’s why Scooter Takes a Walk is available for order or purchase through The Open Book, Warrenton’s independent bookstore. I also sell some books directly at local events and signings.

The story is fiction. Are your characters fictional?

Although the story is fictional, all of the dogs, the people, and the places in the book are real. There are many “behind the scenes” stories in my book. My son Tim died in 2008 at the age of 22 of a heroin overdose. Because we hated the addiction and loved the child, I wanted to honor him by having

him show up in the book. So he’s pictured as a 10-year-old marching in the Independence Day parade with other Scouts. And since I have close friends who also lost children to accidents, illness, or substance abuse, I had their moms send me photos of them when they were younger, and they are included also. Loralyn considered it an honor to draw these young people whose lives ended too soon and who are forever missed.

Tell me about the people who helped you along the way.

Because Loralyn was in California, I needed to take lots of photographs for her to work from. I wanted to keep it as real as possible. So many people agreed to help with this, and I wish I could name them all. One person was Amber Kiffney who helped me several times. She brought her dog Dixie to body-double for Scooter so that Loralyn could visualize, for example, how a dog would stand in The Open Book while Cammie, the owner, places a book in the dog’s backpack. Her sons Eli and Owen are in the parade as well, as they were kind enough to model their Scout uniforms and wave flags. Amber’s daughter Charlotte posed as the reader to therapy dog Tess in the library scene.

What would you like people to take away from this book and your experience writing it?

I hope people feel encouraged to follow their dreams. Determine what’s in your way and then figure out how to move forward.

Do you plan to write more books?

I’ve already written my second book which is a rhyming book about animals doing silly things. Loralyn has already started some sketching. And my third book is Christmas-themed, about a little lamb who, with the assistance of the family dog and some other farm animals, saves a family’s Christmas tradition.

she arranges them into bouquets or buckets of single stems. On Saturday mornings, she brings them to the Warrenton Farmers Market to be sold at $15 per bouquet or $1 per single stem.

A DAY O N T H E JO B When asked how a typical morning on the job starts, Lillian exclaims, “Hot!” — a sentiment anyone who works outside throughout the summer season can relate to. She begins her day at 6 a.m. by doing her morning chores, including feeding the animals — chickens, rabbits, barn cats and a goat — and letting them out into the field, collecting and washing eggs, and weeding and cutting dead flowers in her garden to promote fresh growth. Lillian says, “If it’s Friday, then usually in the afternoon I pick the flowers, and my cat is usually there. If I forget to [do it in the afternoon] and it gets dark, then he’ll come out there with me because he knows I’m afraid of the dark.” She goes on to explain how the picking process works: “I use clippers and I cut [the flowers] at an angle because then they get more water. So, I do that and then place them in a bucket.” Once the flowers have been cut and placed in buckets of water, Lillian carries them up the hill from her front yard to her house, where

G ET TING TO KNO W THE FLORIST Lillian says, “My favorite flowers are Rudbeckia and Celosia. Celosia is the one that looks really fluffy, almost like brains. The Rudbeckia are the yellow flowers.” She cites the scientific names and describes the plants with confidence. “Whenever I first started out, I tried to remember all the names, so I had to keep saying the names in my head,” she says. In addition to her favorites, another flower of note in Lillian’s garden is Cosmos, a pink, daisy-like annual flower. “I think I’m going to have to pull those up later…they last about half [as long as] the other flowers do,” she explains. “The other ones, they seem to grow all season.” Lillian reveals that her favorite part of running her business is being out in the garden because she’s immersed in the beauty of nature. “I actually have found hummingbirds and hummingbird moths,” she says excitedly. “I also see butterflies, bees, and I even have a baby bumblebee that goes around my flowers.” Lillian also enjoys getting to know her customers and other vendors that frequent the farmers market. “[I like] getting to meet new people, and some of them turn into returning customers,” she says. Lillian’s mother, Brittany, states that she often encourages Lillian to stand out in front of her booth to draw people in by making

Currently, she is saving up for a new tablet, because while she does already have one, “it’s about as old as me, and I cracked the screen a little bit,” she says. “It’s still alive right now, but I’m trying to save up to get me a new one so I can still talk to my friends.”

running the floral business is that she is learning skills that will be transferable if she ever does make her dream of owning a bakery a reality. “We tell her that if she works hard now and saves up her money, then she can easily switch.” Brittany also says that many of the skills Lillian is learning will be useful no matter the direction her future takes. She explains, “I think some of it is patience — the fact that she’s having to get up and put the bouquets together. And you can’t slack, because if you do, you’re not going to have your stuff done and you’re not going to get anything sold. We’ll meet on the bridge and he’ll tell me, ‘Nice doing business with ya!’” When Lillian’s not playing outside with friends, she can be found painting with watercolors, playing video games or hanging out with her pets — Pica and Junior, her cats, or Oreo and Cream, her rabbits. And, Lillian says her favorite hobby, baking, may one day become her new business venture.

Erin’s Elderberries Yummy Syrup A LOCAL BUSINESS GROWS OUT OF A WARRENTON MOM’S DETERMINATION TO HELP HER CHILD BY ERIN A. MANN

verything about Erin’s Elderberries started with my son, Lucas. He is our rainbow baby…the joy of our lives that we thank God for each day. While on our way to visit relatives for Lucas’s first birthday, where we had planned a red wagon themed party, he popped a fever. A fever that wouldn’t go away, a fever that kept telling me something was wrong. We took him to the emergency room thinking “OK, worst case scenario, we just postpone the party a few days until he feels better.” Less than a few hours later he was admitted to the hospital. I’ll never forget when the doctor came in. It was 1 a.m, she had her pajamas on under her white doctor’s coat. She was at home, but she came in for us. I knew something was wrong…bad wrong. She told us that Lucas’s bloodwork was off and, in layman's terms, he was showing possible Leukemia. Within an hour, we were admitted to the Oncology floor at Children’s Hospital. The oncologist met us within minutes of our arrival, because Lucas’s

case was different. In a matter of hours, he would turn a year old, and (back then) the protocol for treatment changed dramatically if the patient was 365 days old. He was basically telling us, “you have to figure this out now, because you want the under one year treatment protocol.” At 4 a.m.we

signed papers after papers and later that morning, Lucas was put under anesthesia for his bone marrow aspiration to determine his Leukemia diagnosis. It felt like days had passed when only a couple of hours had gone by. I couldn’t even sit still. I cried. I prayed, I prayed more. I called my Mom and cried. I felt like my prayers were answered. The preliminary tests showed no signs of Leukemia. My heart stopped and raced all at the same time. My baby boy was ok. This was the best birthday ever, even though we had to celebrate his first birthday party in his hospital room. My parents drove down with all the cupcakes and food they were planning on serving and my Mom served the nursing staff on the floor. And children on the floor who were allowed cupcakes were given one too. We never found out exactly what was wrong with Lucas. More tests could have been done, but the treatment protocol was the same no matter what they would find. We decided not to put our baby through more tests.

mom and now I've got to worry about my child contracting the flu. How do I do that?” ELDERBERRIES ENTER THE PICTURE I came across some literature regarding the flu shot and adults who had reactions. They were using other methods to prevent the flu. I started reading on…you guessed it…. elderberry. I could only find research backing use during a cold or flu, but nothing for prevention. But all my reading was showing that that is how people are using it, and why, and how. So I set off to the store, and when I got there, I could not believe the junk in the bottles they sold. To top it off, it was awful tasting, and expensive! So I told myself I would figure out how to make my own, a healthier version, a better version. I researched all the ingredients listed in traditional syrups, and read about why they were used and what benefits they brought, and what ratios were minimally needed. I sought the highest quality ingredients and spent a good couple of weeks tweaking recipes to make them taste good so that Lucas wouldn’t run from me when I tried to give it to him. One night, he looked at me and said, “Mama, I want yummy syrup.” And that is what he calls it to this day, and

STILL VULNERABLE We were discharged a few days later. We came home, back to normal life, but Lucas continued to get sick easily. He was also developing ridiculous allergies, to the point where he was on two inhalers and two liquid meds a day, at the young age of one. Then the turning point came when I asked one of his specialists, “What can I do to strengthen this kid’s body?” And his answer was, “Nothing, it's just a wait and see, you can't do anything.” And that’s the thing about me, I am not a “wait and see” person, and I also do not take kindly to being told I can’t do something. I walked out of that office, took Lucas home and put him down for a nap, and went to work researching, reading, and combing through peer reviewed journal articles for any information I could find. By trade and by education I am a researcher, so I am very good at going to the end of the internet if need be to find information. I spent a few weeks reading, learning, writing words down I couldn’t even pronounce. The following week I took Lucas to his pediatrician because it was time for his very first flu shot, but the doctor recommended we wait until he was better and his immune system had healed more. I thought, “ok, ummm, I am a new

THE BUSINESS GROWS During “lockdown”, my Dad and my husband helped me turn half our basement into a dedicated business kitchen, where I still make everything by hand in small batches, in small stock pots to ensure quality. swing by my house. My intention was to get people interested in the amazing things elderberry can do, but it took another turn. In about a week’s time I was waking up to random text messages from people I didn't know. They were friends of friends who had tried my elderberry syrup and who wanted some for their kids, who loved it. Business was the last thing on my mind, I just wanted to find a way for me to make this for people’s kids and do it legitimately. I researched food laws and selling in Virginia, and I applied to get inspected and was approved. That was in March of 2019, and it’s been growing strongly ever since. It really ramped up during COVID-19 when I quickly found myself learning how to balance working 80 hours a week for my business and tending to a four year old who was now home full time 100 percent of the time! (here’s a hint…it’s basically impossible).

The business has grown, so now I have a Director of Operations, Jen, who handles the business and shipping side, and three amazing young ladies who help me at the farmer’s markets so we can attend more than one in a weekend. While business is really growing, it’s not about the money for me. My highest

priority, second to affordability, is that I want my customers to have access to my products when they need it. Sometimes I’ll get texts in the middle of the night, when someone’s child is sick, so I’ve put an honor cooler on my porch for my customers, so they have access any time. My products are available in some small shops locally, but I’d love to get them into bigger stores like Whole Foods so people further away have access when it is later at night. I love Warrenton. The Farmers market is where I “got my start”, and the support of this community turned my passion into a successful business. While I use social media for advertising, locally it’s still a word-of-mouth business. My dream is to be able to open a little shop of my own in Warrenton one day. Erin’s Elderberries has been shipped to all 50 states, five countries, and retails in 18 states currently, all because I have the same passion for helping other families as I do my own child. I make no claims about what works and what doesn’t, but I instead share the story of our family, of our triumph, in hopes that it will give hope to others who are like I was: at their breaking point with their family’s health and well being.

It is October and we are officially in full-on fall mode now! Let’s assume you have broken out the pumpkin spice in one way or another, sweaters and boots are at the ready, and that fall décor has taken its place on the porch and the mantel. Fall in Northern Virginia is prime season for farm visits, apple picking, corn mazes and haunts of all kinds. We’ve gathered a few ideas for you here; make sure you check websites and Facebook pages for the most current information.

Valley View Farm 1550 Leeds Manor Road, Delaplane (540) 592-1021 valleyviewva.com Thurs/Fri: 12-5 Saturday: 10pm - 6 pm Sunday: 10 pm - 5 pm Last entry is ½ hour before closing Corn Maze: $5/kids, $10/adults Kendra Cummings, farm market and events manager at Valley View Farm, is excited for fall. “My favorite part of the farm in the fall is the colors from the top of the property, where you can see the entire valley,” she said. “We are right next to Sky Meadows State Park, so it’s just the most gorgeous thing!” Valley View Farm was recently voted Best Pick Your Own by readers of Northern Virginia Magazine, with fall offerings including a good variety of apples as well as pumpkins. Of particular note is the farm’s corn maze, which incorporates a treasure hunt for kids by placing six treasure chests in the maze. “We put stickers inside the treasure chests, and they match the stickers on the worksheet the kids carry with them,” Kendra said. “This offers a cognitive activity within the corn maze fun!” A returned sticker sheet gets the kids a set of honey straws, and adults can choose a glass of cider or sangria. Valley View will host its second annual Halloween Party, featuring

costume competition in different categories – including dogs! The farm’s fall festival runs through the end of October, closing with an end of season bon fire the second weekend of November. “We have sangria specials and select fresh meats on sale because we are closing for the season,” Kendra said. “We begin just before sunset and offer hot cider and usually a food truck.” The property itself sits on an historical tract of land, stewarded by the Struthers family for 100 years and hunted on by George Washington himself. Not only do they offer seasonal fruit picking from blueberries and cherries in June, peaches in July and August, and apples in the fall, but the onsite store Locavore Farm Market & Tasting Room carries wine from their sister property Philip Carter Winery and many regional items. “Everything we sell is local – Shawnee Canning Company jams and preserves, candles crafted from our wine bottles, local produce, and grass fed and finished humane meat from our neighbor farm Skyview Acres,” Kendra said. “We have the largest apiary in Northern Virginia, and we sell those honey products in the store – totally local because the bees pollinate right on the property!” The store also sells items to use during your visit like frisbees and kites. “We used to be more adult-oriented, but when COVID hit, people wanted to get out with their kids and have a place for them to run around. We offer more family focused activities and items to cater to that.” The farm is closed November through March, and during the upcoming off season they are renovating to support staying open year-round with the addition of a new, full kitchen, indoor bathrooms, and more.

Come October 1, the property shifts for fall activities, with apples, pumpkins, gourds, freshly-pressed apple cider and apple-cider donuts taking a starring role. The farm features the scary stuff, too – a haunted corn maze and house for the adults with a tame section for the younger ones. “We send the adults through the corn maze at night, and there are scary things in there!” said farm and market owner Kris Gilbert. “There is a part of the maze specifically for kids during the day, along with the train made of barrels pulled by the lawn mower and our famous hayrides.” Along with the maze and haunted house, weekends in October feature food concessions, music, bon fires, and more. “I love our apple cider from local apples – even though I am not an apple cider fan,” says Buckland’s Rashell Rinker. “I love fall, and I really love fall at Buckland. The farm is the most peaceful place – unless you are in the corn maze on a Friday or Saturday night!” Kris and Danielle Gilbert have owned the farm – now named Gilbert and Sons Farm -- for a while now, but only took over the market last May. “My 12 and 13 year old sons work next to me on the farm,” said Kris. His wife works at the family-owned Woody’s Ice Cream in Fairfax City, and helps out at the farm on weekends. Look for a new outdoor play area and new farm animals to visit shortly.

his October marks my tenth year of living here in the great Commonwealth of Virginia and my first anniversary as a Fauquier County resident. It was indeed the wine business that brought me (and my family) here; little did I know or imagine that both my wine and winery discoveries had truly yet to reveal themselves. I’ve had the great fortune and pleasure of writing about the wines and wineries of Virginia, from the Blue Ridge Mountains and Shenandoah Valley, through Monticello and the southern inlands; and with over 300 wineries to choose from, there’s plenty for wine lovers to enjoy…I know I have.

One great and common thread found in many of the wineries throughout Virginia is the diversity of offerings that extend beyond the viticulture and vinifying of wine. This is certainly true of the 20-plus wineries that are located in Fauquier County. So, in celebration of Virginia Wine Month, I’ll share with you what I’ve found to be some of the best additional winery features that complement not only their wine-consuming experience, but the overall adventure that comes with any given visit. There’s nothing like a great locally brewed beer. Wait, what? Beer?! If you’d like to hit a local

winery, but suddenly find yourself longing more for a cold brew, then you must visit Three Fox Vineyard & Brewery. Located high on a bluff, off Highway 17 North in Delaplane, TFV&B offers up an assortment of IPAs, a cool Kettle Sour and a killer Dry Irish Stout. Brewer Richard Thompson is a master craftsman, wholly committed to the purity of any given style of beer he’s producing. Of course, TFV & B grows grapes and makes wine, and you should definitely try their wonderful array of vino; that said, they’ll tell you, “We have set out to blur the lines between beer and wine. We are innovating and cultivating new fermentation styles and having a lot of fun along the way!” They’re not kidding. If you’re looking to tap your toes with some great live music, then groove on out I-66W to Markham and spend an afternoon at Naked Mountain Winery & Vineyards. inspired wines, plus a terrific Villard Noir, go down easy when you’re sitting on the deck, enjoying some solo acoustic and small band performances from many of our area’s talented local musicians. Music in the Blue Ridge mountainside, along with great wine and food of course, makes Naked Mountain Winery & Vineyards motto - Good Wine, Good Tunes, Good Times – the perfect caption to describe a great getaway. Speaking of getting away, sometimes you don’t have to travel the full distance to get to where you’re going. For Morais Vineyards & Winery, in Bealeton, that idea has come to fruition with Aroma, an off-site, standalone tasting room. There are two of these wonderful venues, one in old town Manassas and the other in the heart of Haymarket. A full-service experience, Aroma offers all Morais’s great wines in flights, bottles, glasses and of course, their on-site customer favorite slushies. As for food, assorted cheeses, charcuterie and crackers are also available. Steeped in their Portuguese roots, the Morais family opened their winery in 2011 and offer a very unique wine experience, with distinctly Portuguese inspired wines such as a Vihno Verde, made from the Portuguese Albarino Varietal and bottling the famous red grape, Touriga Nacional. Richard Hemming, a WSET Master of Wine, once wrote, Wine was made long before science could explain it. So, wine can live without science, but not art. As a wine lover, writer and musician, as well as being the son of a painter, I’ve always looked for the art in every glass of wine I’ve ever held. If this resonates with you, then you must visit Arterra Wines and Hawkmoth Arts Studio and Gallery. Sitting on 75 acres and tucked in the forestry shadows of Lost Mountain and Crooked Run Valley, in Delaplane, Arterra’s creed is Art of the Land. Owners Jason Murray (winemaker) and Sandy GrayMurray (resident artist) offer up one of the most compelling winery experiences around. The wine side of the business is as minimalist as you can want, with vineyard and cellar coming together in a singular focus… native yeasts, neutral oak and a no additives nor concentration manipulations policy all contribute to the clarity and purity of Bordeaux-inspired reds and Burgundy & Rhone inspired whites. As for Hawkmoth Arts Studio and Gallery, Gray-Murray offers a dizzying collection of wine and vineartwork. There are classes, events and experiences for all willing participants who are drawn to both wine enjoyment and art creation…

no experience is required, everyone is welcomed. A trip to Arterra Wines and Hawkmoth Arts Studio and Gallery will absolutely affirm that Hemming was right. As I stated, there are 20plus wineries throughout Fauquier County. And while I’ve highlighted just a few here that stand out for their own uniqueness, I’d be remiss in not giving a big shout out to the following wineries below, very honorable mentions if you will, which also offer their own unique and exciting experiences… If you’re looking for a romantic, adult-only (21 and over) winery, then Chateau O’Brien at Northpoint Winery and Vineyard (Markham), Delaplane Cellars (Delaplane), RdV Vineyards (Delaplane) and Pearmund Cellars (Broad Run) are all must-visits. Numerous award-winning wines with private tastings, impressive culinary options (including wine dinners), and stunning views make each of these four beautiful wineries the choice spot for a romantic escape. For a fun-filled, familyfriendly day at the winery, Aspen Dale Winery and Barrel Oak Winery, both in Delaplane, are great places for the kids!

Outdoor games, frisbees, footballs and cornhole are all welcomed at ADW, while BOW has a scavenger hunt, dirt piles and all kids get free juice boxes. In addition, BOW has a pizza kitchen on site. History buffs will love Philip Carter Winery, in Hume. The Carter Family legacy reaches back almost 260 years, and they are often recognized as the first makers of fine wine in Virginia. It was Charles Carter, who, in 1762, sent the London Society for the Encouragement of the Arts a dozen bottles of his Virginia wine. Visit PCW and discover Virginia wine history. And finally, no winery visit would be truly complete, at least for some, if they couldn’t take their dog! The pet-friendly kudos awards go to Barrel Oak Winery (for leashed pets) and Three Fox Vineyard, (where your wellbehaved dog can run off leash). As for BOW, they have plenty of dog treats for your pooch…If you can’t go wine-ing without your dog, try these two options. So, as you fall into Autumn, visit the great wineries of Fauquier County and reach beyond the glass for the complete experience…it’s those experiences that keep us all coming back. TILAPIA POACHED IN WHITE WINE BUTTERED CARROTS HERBED APPLE RICE HOT BISCUITS AND APPLE BUTTER

Pairs with your favorite Fauquier Chardonnay, Pinot Noir or Merlot Prepping as much ahead as you can makes for easy entertaining plus it gives the flavors a chance to meet and mingle. Make this a day ahead and refrigerate. Gently reheat at serving time and garnish. ½ stick butter 1 large onion (chopped - about 1 cup) 1 tablespoon flour ½ cup pumpkin puree (canned or fresh – not pumpkin pie filling) 3½ cups vegetable or chicken stock 2 Tablespoons brown sugar (to taste) 1 cup Half & Half Salt and pepper (to taste) Garnish - olive oil, red pepper flakes, cracked black pepper, shredded raw mushrooms 1. Melt butter in a medium pot. Add the onion. Cook till soft – about 5 minutes. Whisk in flour. Cook 1 minute. Whisk in puree, stock, and brown sugar. Simmer, partially covered, 15 minutes to blend flavors. Stir in half & half. Add salt and pepper to taste. Heat to steaming but do not boil. 2. To serve: Drizzle each portion with olive oil. Sprinkle a few red pepper flakes, pinches of cracked black pepper and a bit of shredded mushroom. Serve hot.

Pairs with your favorite Fauquier Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Grigio, Riesling, or Non-Oak Chardonnay So good. So fast! It takes only 15 minutes to make this elegant dinner party entrée. Keep it warm while your guests are enjoying their bisque. 4 tilapia fillets (about 1 ¾ lbs.) Semi-sweet white wine, like Riesling (about ½ bottle) ½ stick butter (divided) 2 Tablespoons bread crumbs 3 Tablespoons fresh parsley (finely chopped) 1. Put 1 inch of wine in the bottom of a large skillet. (Don’t use cast iron.) Add tilapia. Partially cover and simmer until tilapia is opaque and flakes easily – about 10 minutes. Remove fish to a serving platter. Cover and keep warm while making the sauce. 2. To make the sauce, return the pan of poaching wine to the heat. Add 2 Tablespoons butter. Boil (uncovered) until it’s reduced to about 2/3 cup of liquid. In a separate skillet, melt the remaining 2 Tablespoons of butter. Add the breadcrumbs and cook on low (stirring) until the crumbs are golden – about 3 minutes. 3. To serve, pour the sauce over the fish, sprinkle with the toasted bread crumbs and chopped parsley.

HERBED APPLE RICE Prepare your favorite rice according to package directions, substituting vegetable or chicken broth for the water. When the rice is done, stir in some chopped apple that’s been sautéed in butter, a good pinch of cinnamon, a bit of chopped parsley, some raisins or dried cranberries, and/or chopped nuts. Serve hot.

dessert TOASTED COCONUT FUDGE PIE Pairs with your favorite Fauquier Moscato, Ice Wine/Late Harvest, Port, Gewurztraminer, or Sparkling Wine, You can also serve Pinot Noir or Merlot if you prefer non-sweet wines. This make ahead dessert is everything you could want in a dessert. Rich and creamy. Chocolate-ty and easy. Yes, easy! Tastes like you were in the kitchen all day only you weren’t. And, since you make it ahead, it’s another way to help simplify entertaining! At serving time, adding a dollop of whipped cream alongside each portion makes this pie extra fancy, although the dessert wine you’ll pair it with makes it fancy enough. Makes 1 (10-inch) pie 2 Tablespoons butter (softened) 3 cups coconut (divided) 1 (13 oz.) can evaporated milk 1 cup strong coffee 8 oz. semi-sweet chocolate (chips or bar) 2 eggs 1 and 1/3 cups brown sugar 6 Tablespoons flour 2 Tablespoons Amaretto or coffee liquor 1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Butter the pie pan using the entire 2 Tablespoons of butter. Evenly press 2¾ cups of coconut onto the bottom and sides of the pan to form a crust. Set aside. 2. Heat evaporated milk, coffee and chocolate chips in a small pot till the chocolate melts. 3. In a large bowl, whisk together eggs, brown sugar, flour and liquor. Whisk in the chocolate mixture. Pour into prepared crust. 4. Sprinkle remaining coconut around the edge of the pie to make a decorative edge. 5. Bake till set to a light touch – about 25 minutes. Pie will not be firm. Cool 1 hour then lightly cover and refrigerate overnight before serving.

Shopping Local Online Etsy for the holidays and beyond BY BETH LUNA

Etsy is a great go-to for unique and handmade items of all kinds. In the spirit of shopping local for the holidays, we sourced some Fauquier artisans who sell on the site so that you, their neighbors, can support our local economy while unearthing some original and local treasures to share. Happy shopping! wild about them.” She picked up a few rolls of crepe paper and began experimenting. “I loved making the crepe paper flowers!” she said. “I made them for my daughter’s birthday, snapped a few pictures and listed them in my Etsy shop, and I quickly had my first order! It was a wild roller coaster from there – but I had found my niche!” As the demand for Pricilla’s flowers grew, so did the demands on her time. “There were days where I would wake up at 4 a.m. and go to bed at 3 a.m. and I was still struggling to keep up,” she said. “The best part was getting to meet so many amazing clients and paper florists. I love getting photos and stories from clients about how they use their paper flowers, and I really enjoy doing commercial work as well — Sephora, Jo Malone, Macy’s, Project Nursery, Dove, and Teiks were some of my favorites.” Regarding her Etsy success, Pricilla says, “Find your niche! I don’t follow other people’s tutorials and create my own style based on client needs and my own preferences. My style of paper flower is not the most sophisticated and realistic but it’s my own!”

After a bit of a false start with natural bath and body products, it was her daughter’s upcoming first birthday that lit the spark that became her business today. “I wanted some unique decorations for her party, so I looked into paper flowers,” she said. “Most of the tutorials I found were for tissue paper flowers, but I wasn’t

The shop expanded when Steve was laid off during the pandemic. “Steve and I are both very creative, but in our own unique ways,” Carina said. “Our products are the combination of our different creative talents. Steve likes to work with wood, and I like to come up with the ideas and paint. Basically, I like to tell Steve what needs to be done. Ha!” Steve brings his precise design background and Carina, her artistic nature, and together they complement each other. “I often go rogue and just do whatever creative thing I'm feeling versus tackling the project at hand. Steve is great about steering me back, reminding me to not forget we have a certain number of signs to ship this week,” she added. “We work together in the design process, and I hand paint and distress the signs, do the sewing, and social media management.” Along with signs, they offer additional handmade items like wooden tic-tac-toe games and sewn items like pillowcases made from grain sack fabric, linen baby bonnets, and seasonal home decor. It can be challenging to keep their products in stock, but they acknowledge that’s a good thing. “Some weeks we'll get slammed with back-toback orders, and we'll wonder if someone shared one of our items on social media to create such a flurry,” Carina said. The Rustic Mod products are also offered at two local stores – Warrenton’s This 'n That Amish Outlet, and the Very Virginia Shop in downtown Leesburg.

Hidden Treasure Jewelry LORI SOWERS, WARRENTON ETSY.COM/SHOP/HIDDENTREASURE “In 2008, my crafty mom gave me a jewelry craft kit for Mother's Day,” said Warrenton’s Lori Sowers. “I was intrigued and tried it out. I quickly caught on, watching online tutorials, studying jewelry books and magazines, using my husband’s garage tools, and practicing until I got it right.” She invested in real jewelry pliers, and a month later she had more jewelry than she could wear. “My husband recommended trying to sell on a website he had heard of called Etsy,” she said. “I picked out a business name,

But after talking to other Etsy sellers and joining sales groups I began to raise my ratings. I was able to quit my full time job and put all my time into my embroidery business and Etsy shop.” Cindy does it all – taking orders, making the items, shipping, and social media marketing. What makes her Etsy shop such a success is due in part to the homework and attention she gives it daily. “It is not just a set it and forget it kind of thing,” she said. “Read all you can, learn from sales groups, study the Etsy algorithms, take good photos of your products, follow the Etsy rules, and freshen your shop often.” Cindy’s product line includes baseball hats, tee shirts, sweatshirts, and many other items, including something a bit unique – custom livestock show awards. “We have shipped awards all over the USA and done some big national and state show awards.” Livestock shows are a passion for her family, who have been involved in 4H and open shows. “This spring I had a customer named Tammy from Missouri who owns a feed store frequented by 4H kids in the area,” she shared. “She wanted to support them, but of course she can’t buy an animal from each kid that buys feed! Instead, she ordered 78 cooler tote bags with the kid’s names on them and the animal that they had raised and shown. I loved working with her and all the messages I got about how much the kids and their parents had liked the gifts.” “Things like that make me happy, when I know I am putting a smile on others' faces,” she added. “I also love making custom grandparent sweatshirts at Christmas and getting messages after the holidays about how much those are loved.”

It took a few weeks to get my first sale.” Loris’s shop, which features earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and more, all made of sterling, beads, charms, and other materials, now sits at over 8,500 sales, earning her the Etsy Star Seller rating. “There are people wearing my creations all over the world,” Lori said. “I have shipped my jewelry across the U.S. and to 31 countries!” In addition to her jewelry designs, Lori is well known for her unique bookmarks, listing over 300 in her Etsy shop. A full time kindergarten teacher, Lori hopes to continue to build the business so the momentum will continue past her retirement from the classroom. She found that once she began selling extra jewelry-making supplies alongside her creations, her shop really took off.

Do You Want to be a Time Sleuth? Free Genealogy Workshop on November 6

ne of the fundamental questions we all ask ourselves at some point or another is where do I come from? If you are lucky enough to have stories about your ancestors, how do you know those stories are real? If you are not that lucky, how can you find out about the people whose lives led to yours? Genealogy is the process of discovering

those answers. The Fauquier Court House Chapter of the National Society Daughters of the American Revolution and the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution invite you all to come seek out the answers to those questions. We are hosting a free genealogy workshop on November 6 at the Warrenton

Presbyterian Church from 9am-3:30pm. In conjunction with the Culpeper Minute Men, volunteers from both organizations come to help family historians start researching or progress with untangling the threads of their family stories. Regardless of whether you think you have a Revolutionary War Patriot as an ancestor, this workshop will help you learn a little more about your family ties. When the doors to this event open, attendees can meet the leaders of both the Fauquier Court House Chapter, NSDAR and the Culpeper Minute Men Chapter, SAR while enjoying coffee and breakfast. Attendees will then enjoy eight researchand genealogy-related workshops. In addition, attendees will have the opportunity to ask questions of a genealogist and enjoy a presentation, “The SAR Patriot Record System,” by Jamie Calender.
