“We used Patti both to sell our home and also purchase our new place. She is incredibly responsive, proactive and a great person to boot; we were very grateful to find someone like her who really cares and understands the ropes, which was important given how stressful real estate can be. Her energy and positivity are infectious, but she was also never anything but honest and straight with us during the entire process, which we really appreciated. We’re certainly calling her again next time.”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Ihave had a couple of people ask me why I didn’t write a letter from the editor for the September issue. This actually kind of surprised me, since I didn’t think anyone actually read those.

Editor’s notes are hard to write sometimes. Oc casionally (ok, most of the time) I leave it to the last minute. All the rest of the pages for Septem ber had been uploaded to the printer, and I was trying to figure out what to write.

About a year ago, I went out on a limb and told my readers about my husband’s prostate cancer in my editor’s note. I wrote that if I just reached one person about the importance of screening that it would be the most important thing I’d ever written.

I did reach at least one person. A distant acquaintance who had been recently diagnosed reached out to us to talk.

As I sat down to write last issue’s note, an email came in. In the spring, I was diagnosed with DCIS, a stage 0 non-invasive or pre-invasive breast cancer. I had a biopsy and two small surgeries over the summer. The email that came in, the pathology from the second surgery, did not have great news.

The good news is that there is no evidence of invasive malignancy. And that is very, very good news. The not-so-great news is that there is a lot of it, and it is too spread out to remove easily.

At that point, I got a little distracted, and I couldn’t wrap my head around writing anything, so, for the first time ever, I skipped the letter. Apologies to anyone that was going to read it!

In general, up to 40 percent of DCIS can/will develop into invasive breast cancer. The scope and classification of mine puts me at a little bit higher risk. While some might opt to take those odds, I, with my husband and with the support of our

kids and extended family, have decided to act very conservatively. While nothing is ever guaranteed, by undergoing mastectomy now I should vastly decrease my chance of breast cancer in the future, and it is likely I will also be able to avoid radiation, chemotherapy, and further medication.

That said, it is a very big surgery, and I may be out for a few weeks. It will be very hard.

I had never skipped a mammogram until COVID. But I skipped it in 2020 and 2021. Would things have been different? I don’t know.

But, again, if I reach one person by sharing this with you here, it will be worth it.

Rappahannock County artists open their studios next month as their 17th Annual Fall Art Tour returns

Nearby Rappahannock County's fine artists, many of whom are award-winning and nationally recognized, are busy creating new works in a wide range of genres for next month’s Fall Art Tour.

Be a part of this extraordinary 17-year tradition: The combination of beautiful art and Rappahannock County’s stunning vistas, in the shadow of the Shenando ah National Park in prime leaf-peeping season, guarantees a fabulous experi ence for all. Come for just a day, or make a weekend of it by staying in one of our many inns, bed and breakfasts, and Airbnbs, so you can take advantage of our wonderful local restaurants, wineries, breweries, and more on your visit. Here’s what to expect when the annual event welcomes visitors: Self-guided tours will take visitors through the scenic Piedmont country side and charming villages en route to their favorite studios and galleries on November 5 and 6. This singular event thrives on the energies of the artists sharing their creative processes with visitors, a welcoming local community, and enthusiastic visitors who come from near and far.

A wide range of art and 80+ local artists: Nearly 40 studios and galleries featur ing 80+ local artists are participating, with many returning artists and two brand new artist studios. You’ll see a wide range of art including paintings in all genres and mediums, furniture, drawings and engravings, sculpture, ce ramics, mosaics, photography, printmaking, woodworking, jewelry, book binding, and stained glass and other glasswork. Two key recent changes that are continuing this year:

• Most importantly, the Tour is free! Donations are always welcome, but not required.

• Visitors can plan their own Tour, starting from any part of the county, studio or gallery. Maps will be available both online at FallArtTour. org, as well as at the Rappahannock Visitors Center and other local businesses. Check out the website for a sneak peek of what you’ll find in participating galleries and studios; each has their own feature page.

A special experience, open to all: What makes the Fall Art Tour such a special event is the opportunity to visit with artists in their studios, see where they work and learn about their creative process. After meeting the artist, you may decide to take home a new piece of art based on a better understanding of the artist, the inspiration for the piece, and the artist’s technique. This event happens just once a year and many of these studios are only open to the public this one weekend each year.

KamererSergeantThomas

Ever since he was old enough to ride a bike, Sergeant Thomas Kamerer of the Warrenton Police Department always dreamed of becoming a police officer.

A Northern Virginia native, Kamerer, 52, said one of his favorite things about growing up in the Mt. Vernon area in the 1970s was watching the motorcycle officers drive down his street with blaring sirens and flashing lights on their Harley Davidson bikes. “I thought that was the coolest thing in the world,” he said.

Kamerer said he had always envisioned himself being one of those motor officers. But, as for most people, life happened, and he went a different path working for a slew of different electronic compa nies, including a major telecom corporation that contracted with federal agencies.

It wasn’t until he was in his early thirties, following the Sept. 11 attacks, that Kamerer decided to make the leap and fulfill his dream.

He explained, “That day I was at work at the Department of Transportation. One of my buddies called me and said, ‘Hey, man, where are you at?’ I told him I was at work, and he said, ‘Dude, go downstairs and look at the TV.’ So I went downstairs and there must have been 100 people hovered around the TV. Everybody was elbow-to-elbow, shoulder-to-shoulder, watching and that's when the second plane hit the tower.”

The following days and weeks were a blur. He had knee surgery a week later, and when he woke up from his anesthesia he remembers asking the nurse if the attacks had really happened. “And she said, ‘Yeah,

it really “Iofwasandansaidwork,scramblingengineersKamererSeveralhappened.’”monthslater,andseveralotherwereletgo.Whiletofindotherhowever,Kamererherealizedthatitwasidealopportunitytotrypursuehisdreamagain.“September11,Ithink,aturningpointforalotpeople,”Kamerersaid.thoughttomyself,‘Youknow

what? I've always wanted to do police work. I'm going to Afterapply.’”afew

months he got a call from the Warrenton Police Department which was looking for can didates for their new police academy. Kamerer had already started working as a contrac tor again, but the police chief Roger Paul’s assistant, Brenda, convinced him to take the job.

That was 20 years ago, and Kamerer has been with the department ever since.

“I will say this about this County and this town espe cially: the people are great and that's the truth,” he said. “You couldn't pay me double to work anywhere else, because I wouldn't do it.”

Kamerer said after 20 years with the department, one of the biggest challenges they have faced is facing mental health chal lenges in the community. But he noted the department has come a long way since then, and he’s helped people in ways he never imagined before becoming an officer.

“There was this one guy, not a very old guy…he had a couple of mental health issues

and some physical issues as well,” Kamerer said. “Lived here his whole life, born and raised. The reason I know this is because he would call me and just want to talk. I would take an hour, sometimes more, and just sit with him and talk and listen, trying to get him the help that he needed.”

Since becoming a Sergeant, Kamerer has spent a lot of his time training younger and new officers not only how to enforce the law but uplift the community in other ways.

“My job is not to intimidate anybody. It's not all car chases and arresting people and stuff like that,” he said. “That might be part of the job sometimes, but that's not it. Nine ty-nine percent of the time, we're out here just fixing Kamerer, problems.”whohaslived in western Fairfax and commuted to Warrenton for the last 20 years, said he plans to retire in five years. But until then, his goal is to keep training the next generation of officers to be good people and to be good at their job.

“The important thing in this job is educat ing yourself, or getting the education to do the job effectively, and also pass that along,” Kamerer said. “So being a field training officer and general instructor were two of the things that I wanted to do. And I wanted to teach and try to help others.” w

These initiatives have made profound and positive impacts on the fourth-generation farm and are enabling Currier, and her children and grandchildren to continue her parents’ lega cy and the legacy of those who came before them.

“Kinloch Farm was already selling cattle and live animals to provide opportunities for other farmers to buy some good bloodlines and to have a healthy seed herd of animals,” says Currier.

“We also had an employee beef benefit, but we weren't making that public. However, the experience of COVID was very interesting in this community. People started to

appreciate the reality of the area they were living in - that it was productive, agricultural, and connected. During COVID, people were more intentional about the basic rudiments of their life and started shopping locally.”

In light of this, she decided to enter Kinloch into that retail community of producers by bringing their meat products and honey directly to the public. Headed by manager Bobby Doane, the Kinloch Farm Store offers, in addition to their own farm products, curated merchan

dise from other farms and artisan producers.

“What Kinloch didn't have, and what we thought was special, we included in our offerings,” she says. “We have beef, dairy, chicken, pork, eggs and some locally-related personal products. We want to give the consumer a more diversified set of choices and help other producers as well.”

Mike Peterson, the farm and conservation director, enjoyed the task of helping Currier get the store up and running. “I had a business before this where we sold directly to consumers,” he says. “So I came in with a bit of experience on how to take a business model from selling live animals and turning that into a business where we're selling directly to the consumer and interfacing directly with who's buying the product.”

Peterson says the feedback has been very positive. “After being open for two months, we're already seeing repeat customers. It's a good thing for not just the imme diate community in the town of The Plains, but a positive for other local producers in the area as another outlet to sell some of their products.”

Merchandise

Some of the most popular cuts of beef, he says, are the ones people recognize by name. “Ribeyes are best sellers, but New York strips and tenderloins are also in high demand. Things like bones and fat, which people are less familiar with, are also sold because it's important to us that we're able to use the whole animal and have a use for everything

The honey is also popular and comes from the beehives located right on the property. “It’s certified by an organi zation called Certified Naturally Grown, which is a collec tive of organic growers and producers,” says Currier. “We actually participate both in our honey operation - our apiary - and also currently in our beef operation. We have had affiliations in the past with other certifying groups, but this has been our current certifier for over 10 years.”

Consumers can view available products in the store on its website. “The intent with eCommerce is to have an easy way for people to see and interact with our re al-time inventory and be able to place pre-orders for pickups,” says Peterson.

are introduced to the herd. Chemical herbicides or fertilizers are never utilized on any of its production acreage. Kinloch’s farm and cattle operations are in the Certified Naturally Grown Program.

Adds Currier, “There are people who visit the Piedmont area of Northern Virginia who are weekenders or who may be just tourists for a weekend. People who fall into that category may very well not be in the area during the work week and therefore, when they do come out, they can place an order, pick it up and enjoy it while they’re here. It also helps them take advantage of what's unique about the area, and since we’re right off I-66, we’re easy to get Currier,to.”

who has spent many years involved in and supporting the town of The Plains, explains, “It just feels very natural and it’s so gratifying to extend these things in Virginia to a larger circle of people.”

Adds Peterson, “Gratifying is the word I would use as well. I think food is a very accessible medium to tell a story, too - the story of Kinloch's history, genetics and bloodlines, and the ecological practices we use. It's connecting the consumer with what we're doing and why we're doing it through the sale of incredibly nutrient-dense products that are nourishing for them and their families.”

The Land

“We want to be productive without being abusive to this property that I own with my family, and to be helpful

and healthy,” says Currier. “We want to work to integrate important relationships like land and animals and people who are professionally involved in land and animals for the necessity of food.”

Family farms are so important to the communities in which they’re located, and for the areas around them as well. Unfortunately, many of these important resources are disappearing. These farming families produce much of the food we need to survive, and also provide agriculture infrastructure - jobs for farm workers and patronage to other industries, like the local agricultural economy.

“Kinloch is participating in a larger whole of a land mass that is contiguous or mostly contiguous in a signifi cant fashion that supports animals and environmental and natural resources which is just key to a healthy planet,” she says. “Every single family and every single property owner that is able to make that work is contributing to the larger whole.”

Currier stresses that although she’s involved with the farm day in and day out, it also takes a team of profession als to make it a successful operation. “I’m backed up by a lot of talented people like Mike Peterson,” she says. “In just the past year, he has played a pivotal role in bringing our farm into a different business by creating a retail reality.”

Peterson gets a lot of satisfaction from working at Kinloch Farms. “I think the most fulfilling part is the diversity in the scope of work - what I'm involved in day to day,” he says. “It runs the gamut of the entire course of the operation, which is fun.” w

Collecting classic and antique cars is a hobby that not only is fun, but also brings a sense of nostalgia. John Piper loves it for many reasons, but the biggest is because it helps him feel connected to his late father, George, who collected cars as well.

Antique and classic cars, he explains, are windows into the past. “Your senses get stimulated by these old cars and they really take you back, and I think that's one of the reasons why we like them so

Today, much.”Piper owns seven amazing cars that he considers members of the family, and he doesn’t have a favorite. “It's kind of like your children — you don't have favorites.”

On his 250 acre farm in Hume, where he lives with his wife, Tracy, he built a large garage to protect all his “kids.” It has four stalls, and because of a hydraulic lift, can fit eight cars.

“The farm is actually an old horse farm,” says Piper. “My mother, Christine Colley, was British and a big equestrian, so we had about 60 horses in Minnesota, where I’m from. Here, I think we had around 20, but since she passed away, I've shifted away from horses to horsepower. My garage is named Horsepower Stables.”

While Piper doesn’t take his cars to car shows, he does drive them around town so others can see them and share in his great sense of nostalgia. His number one dream car, if money were no object, would be a replica of the Batmobile. Maybe one day that will be car number 8 in his garage.

1971 Oldsmobile Cutlass Convertible

“It's gorgeous. It's fire-engine red with a cream interior, a 350 rocket engine in a four barrel car buretor. I was given this car by my father for my high school gradua tion in 1984. I ended up taking it to college, and then for my college graduation present, it was given a bit of a restoration.

I've had that car my whole adult life. One of the things that struck me was when my father said, “John, it's easy to give you something because you'll take care of it.” In 2015, I had that Cutlass fully restored. It's one of the things that all car owners are told not to do because you end up spending three times what the car is worth. I didn't care because it was a way of honoring my father. I even put a plaque in it where I thank him for giving me the car.”

1915 Model T

“My dad had a Model T and I always wanted to get one. Walt knew and about four years ago, he called me to say he had one for me. A really good client of his passed away and his son had inherited it along with a Model A. He wanted to sell the Model T and use the money to restore the more run-of-the-mill Model A.

When I asked the son why he sold the Model T to put the money into the Model A, he said it was his great aunt's car, and she was a direct descendant of Sally Hemings [an enslaved domestic servant in Thomas Jefferson’s household and mother of some of his children]. So, I can say my Model T was owned by a descen dant of Thomas Jefferson.

It's beautiful. It's cream white and a spectacular car. It is a 1915 model, but was made into a speed ster in 1917. What they would do is take these model Ts, cut the frames down, repaint them and make them into convertibles. So this car reminds me of the car that Truly Scrumptious drove into the river in Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. It also has a whoopie horn!”

1987 Rolls-Royce Spur

“My father always wanted to get a Rolls-Royce, so I told Walt I really would like to get one in my father's memory.

He had so many at his disposalsome for sale, some he owned, and some that he was storing. I was looking at a Rolls-Royce Cloud, but he recom mended that I get a Spur instead since he thought it was the most dependable Rolls-Royce that you could buy. I've had that car for eight years and it's nev er been in Walt’s shop, so he was right.

It's all black, has a $1000 steering wheel and a wonderful smell. It's just a fantastic car that floats down the road. Instead of brake fluid, it uses mineral oil. I was told, although I don’t have any proof, that Burt Reynolds owned it at one point. He bought 40 of them and brought them to Beverly Hills.”

1964 MGB

“I bought this car from a guy in Georgia who was moving his family to China for work. It's black and completely re stored from the bottom up. He told me it had won all kinds of shows. It has the chrome bumpers, the wire wheels, the sideway door han dles — everything you could want in an MGB. MGBs started being made in 1962 and they ran all the way up to 1980.”

1940s MG TC

“About a year ago, I got a phone call from Walt let ting me know he found a 1949 MG TC for me. It was one of the first big ticket items that were exported out of England after World War II because all the Amer ican servicemen wanted them. It's a quirky car, but very popular. It's a 1940s car, but because of the war, it's designed after a 1930s car. This car sort of signified the winning of World War II.

It's got these wonderful lines, a wood chassis and it squeaks. When I got into this car, I had a flashback that was amazing. I was 8 years old again and my dad had just bought his TC. I heard the ticking sound of the fuel pump plus the engine with its melodic ticking sound. I was like, wow, I've just gone back in time for a minute and reconnected with my dad.”

1948 Willys CJ2A Jeep & 1965 Willys CJ5

“The CJ2A looks like a Korean War jeep. It's got a star on it and it's really fun. My dad shipped it to me in 1995 to have fun on the farm with.

The 1966 Willys CJ5 looks like a safari Jeep like you would see in Africa. I bought it in 2004 from my brother who bought it from a guy who drove it for 10 years, then took it apart and left it in his basement. Around 2000, my brother, George, put it back together and I bought it from him. It’s currently being restored by Walt.

I like old television shows and was watching an old Mannix episode. Mannix was one of the first private-eye shows, and the detective was driving a Willys CJ5 around. It was fun seeing it on there.” w

Meet singer-songwriter Niamh Kierans

Niamh Kierans started playing with her voice when she was seven and her mom introduced her to the music of the singer Adele. “I was always trying to memorize [Adele songs] and I would ask everyone in the car to turn the radio off and let me be the radio and sing–really embarrassing in retrospect,” she laughed.

Her parents enrolled her in singing lessons where she learned musical theory supplemented by Italian arias and classical training. She picked up the ukulele for fun–“[playing] really poorly, but I was playing it,” she joked. “That’s when I started playing covers of songs and appreciating songwriting more.”

Kierans switched over to guitar and began writing her own music. She took lessons with local musician, teacher, and Sound House owner Maddi Mae while she attended W.C. Taylor Middle School. “[Maddi] is the only reason I can do anything more complicated than just strumming on a guitar,” Kierans said.

Her music follows the styles she listens to (indie, folk). Kierans wrote her first song about the feeling of not having a clear home since she grew up on the move. Her parents were in the U.S. Foreign Service and raised her abroad, living and traveling throughout Europe. She moved with her mother to Marshall about 10 years ago.

Kierans performed that first song at a recital and felt the confidence to write songs after a warm reception. She stopped her singing lessons but kept writing songs sporadically. “I would never work on a song over a long period of time. [Writing a song] would be… some fluke thing that happened once a year,” she said.

“That changed when COVID hit, and I was spending all my time at home. It gave me time to think,” she pondered. She churned out a song almost every week of quarantine. “Being in an isolated place is part of the reason I was able to write so much. [I spent] a lot of my time in quiet places… in my bedroom with cows around me and the freight train going by every three hours–it’s a songwriting environment,” she said. “I needed that stillness.”

Kierans’ mom gifted her some recording equipment, and with her parents’ assistance, she recorded her music and collaborated with some trusted producers through Upwork. By the time she was 17, Kierans had released 13 songs on the major music streaming platforms–a two-song EP “Our Own Voyeurs” in 2020 followed by the

single “The Drive Home” and her album “Self and De struction” in 2021. Her music written during the isolation of COVID has been described by one listener as “haunt ing in a good way,” which delighted her. “I feel like those songs feel far away and that’s because of the environment I wrote them in,” Kierans explained. These days her songs are more rooted in the present and have “woken up and feel more pleasant... It’s different from the album which is retrospective,” she said.

Writing and recording music is very personal for Kier ans, something that she does very much for herself but loves when others relate to it. “The topics that feel most private to me–if I’m going to write about them, I’m never going to say them right out,” she said. “I think the ability to make a song relatable without exposing everything that it’s about is the goal of my songwriting. There’s stuff that I write that’s just for me… [but] when a song is for me and other people love it and it resonates with [them], that’s the sweetest thing,” she said with a smile.

Kierans recently graduated from Fauquier High School and is currently in France on a gap year, an adventure she has been dreaming of with her friends ever since their seventh-grade French class. Niamh is drawn to the South of France. “It’s all the perfect parts of being in the country, but the buildings that surround you are from the 11th century. The history is so rich, and I love that,” she explained. She attended a writers retreat there last year to work on what will probably turn out to be a lifelong project that she is passionate about, a novel about a medi eval French princess. “It’s a way to immerse myself in the history,” she said.

She plans to spend the winter holidays at home and then to return to France until she begins school at UVA next fall where she wants to major in English and medie val studies and become a book editor.

While she intends to keep sharing her music, one thing she doesn’t have factored into her future plans is becom ing a professional songwriter or singer. “I don’t want it to become a chore,” she explained. So, she says, “unless something crazy happens,” music will remain a cherished hobby, although she’s looking forward to new life experi ences and creative collaboration with other musicians in college. Even now on her European gap year excursion, she mentioned buying a guitar so she could continue writing songs–she joked that “just something that makes noises” would do. “I feel like this is prime introspection time. I don’t know when it’s going to hit, and you got to catch it while it’s there” she laughed. w

It’s National Crime Prevention Month:

Prepare yourself for the unexpected

Many of us may believe that because we live in a relatively safe town or neighborhood, bad things won’t happen. Unfortunately, no one and no place is immune to violence.

Because October is National Crime Prevention Month, we spoke with three local experts who can direct us on keeping ourselves and our families safe.

“I think we need to take more personal responsibility for ourselves,” says Bill Little, a certified NRA firearms instructor at Highflyer Arms in Warrenton and owner of Smart Shot, LLC. “It's very important for people to be

prepared to defend themselves.”

One way some choose to protect themselves is with firearms. But, with all the options out there, it’s important to have guidance when purchasing and using one.

Purchasing firearms

Reputable firearms shops have trained staff that can help choose what’s right for you and your needs.

“There are a lot of great firearms manufacturers out there these days and a lot of really good choices,” says Greg Wodack, owner of Elite Shooting Sports in Manas sas. “What it really comes down to is what works best for theExplainsindividual.”Little, “When you go to purchase a handgun, you want to make sure the gun fits your hand. It has to feel comfortable. You also want the trigger pull to be

comfortable and you want to be able to handle the recoil.

“Then there's the question, ‘Why are you buying it?’ If it’s just for home defense, and you don't plan to carry it, that's one type, size and style of gun. If you're buying it to put on your hip or in your purse, that's a different style, so there are many factors that come into play when purchas ing a Firearmshandgun.”can

also be very pricey, so you want to make sure you’re buying one that you will be satisfied with for many years to come.

“I would hate for someone to go out and purchase a fire arm and find out it’s not for them,” says Roderick (Wolf) Hunnicutt, owner of Tactical Trash Pandas in Manassas. “Take a class beforehand because most instructors will have a firearm you can train with. If not, some ranges will allow you to rent a firearm just to see if it's for you.”

Classes

Men are not the only ones interested in firearms. According to Wodack, the fastest growing segment in the shooting industry is females.

“We have co-ed courses, but we also offer a ladies-only class taught by all-female instructors, and it’s actually our most popular course. What's unique about it is that we have several different firearms available for students to try. We go through all of the different types of firearms and explain the pros and cons of each. Then they get to go out on the range and try them. We've had over 4,000 women attend so far.”

Many women take courses with Tactical Trash Pandas as well. “Right now, it's about 50%,” says Hunnicutt. “We

Top: A women’s only Manassas.ShootingAbove,inShootingclassfirearmsatEliteSportsManassas.right:EliteSportsin

hold a women's-only class taught by certified instructors, and everyone has dinner together afterwards. We try to make it social.”

Little says he also trains a lot of single moms, female real estate agents, and others who want to feel safer on their own. “A majority are probably 40 or older and many of them are folks who never wanted to touch a handgun before.”

Adds Wodack, “It's also important to continuously practice with your firearm. If you're a gun owner, you have to take responsibility and be accountable. If you have to use your firearm in any type of self-defense scenario, you have to make sure you're making the right decisions and that you can use that firearm accurately.”

Laws

“When you purchase a handgun, you're required to fill out a form for a state background check and a more detailed federal form,” says Little. “When approved, you take your handgun home; it's that simple. Virginia's still

an open carry state, but a year ago, it passed a law that allows local jurisdictions to establish their own rules.”

Adds Wodack, “As far as a concealed carry permit in Virginia, you have to have some type of firearms training before you apply.”

Active shooter situations

In addition to its many other courses, Tactical Trash Pandas offers two active shooter classes – one for the individual and another for decision makers who need a plan of action.

If you find yourself in this type of situation, the first thing you want to do is run. “If you can leave, leave,” says Hunnicutt. “If you cannot get out, find something to hide behind or get yourself into a room, lock the doors, and turn off the lights. If you can't do these two things and you encounter the shooter, only then should you fight. If you can grab the firearm or person, fall to the ground and use your body weight to hold the person down.”

If you are hiding, he suggests blockading the door with furniture or other larger items and looking for things around you to use as a weapon in case the shooter gets through the door. Staplers, books, boxes - use anything you can find to throw at the shooter to slow him down or distract him.

Adds Little, “Call the police and only encounter if you have to. If you have a cell phone, let the police or some body know where you are. For example, ‘I'm locked in a room on the second floor by the bathroom.’

“You want to be the one who goes home and you should do whatever you can to do that. I'm not advocat ing confronting or going after the bad guy. That’s not your job. But, if that guy is kicking in your door and there are

Little also says it’s important to have situational aware ness and not be focused on cell phones or other devices. “Know what's going on around you - be aware.”

First aid

Whether or not you own a gun, everyone should have some knowledge of basic first aid, including CPR training. Medical emergencies can happen anywhere at any time.

“You can have an accident in your home washing dishes and cut yourself with a kitchen knife,” says Hunnicutt. “Someone can fall down the stairs. Your kids can be at the park and hurt themselves. You may witness a cardiac arrest.”

Tactical Trash Pandas offers first aid classes and Amer ican Red Cross CPR training. “We also teach first aid fun damentals which are a little more in depth. It covers how to build your own first aid kit and builds on the American Red Cross program. If you’re far away from medical help, it gives you additional steps to take to keep someone safe such as splinting, irrigating wounds, and things of that na ture.” There’s a Stop the Bleed course as well that comes with its own first aid kit for students to take home. hg

Complaining about the high cost of groceries? I certainly am. Bet you are, too. What we need are cheap eats – and we need them now! Grab your grocery list and do battle with those high prices. You can economize without sacrificing favorite foods. Here’s some ideas to get you going.

Home Made Biscuit Mix (Think Bisquick)

The year was 1930. Carl Smith, a sales executive for General Mills, was traveling by train to San Francisco. He loved the biscuits served for breakfast and asked the cook how he made them. The cook showed Smith a blend of flour, salt, baking powder, and lard that he premixed before every trip. On the train, all he had to do was add milk. Smith took the idea back to General Mills and it became Bisquick. Make your own for half the price. It’s easy!

UsingDIRECTIONSanelectric mixer, thoroughly combine the ingredients – about 2 minutes. Keeps indefinitely in the fridge. Use cup for cup in any recipe calling for Bisquick or biscuit mix.

Forty years ago, my sister and I began researching our family tree. Most of our efforts took place in cemeteries, courthouses, and church offices. Walking among the headstones we carefully recorded birth and death dates. Paging through church records we learned when marriages took place and the names of children. Interview ing grandparents, aunts and uncles we heard the stories of our ancestors’ earliest days in America, the hardships they faced and even a few bawdy tales of the “bad apples” littering our genealogical past. Slowly, our family’s story was flushed out, filled in and memorial ized for future generations.

Today, exploring your family history doesn’t necessarily require a trip to the courthouse or time spent in a cemetery.

Much of the research can be done online. If you are just beginning to explore your family history, it can be helpful to look through old photos, talk to relatives and assemble a list of your grandparents, great-grandparents, and other relatives. Then visit your local library and explore the many tools available to com pile your family’s story.

Start Local Genealogy is a popular pursuit of Fauquier County residents. Some want to preserve their family history for future generations, gain the satisfaction of accurate storytelling, or understand the rich history that encom passes Fauquier County.

Luke Moriarty, a rising junior at Kettle Run High School and varsity lacrosse goalie, has always dreamed of going pro, but he never thought he would have the chance to play for an international sports team while still in high school. But little did he know Dave Libby, U.S. manager of Peace Lacrosse the World, a charity campaign that promotes peace through lacrosse education and training internationally, was watching him closely. Libby needed a replacement goalie for the Panama National La crosse team for the Pine Ridge Games, a tournament which invites international teams to play against professional Native American teams to help raise their national profile.

"[Moriarty] had to be able to handle that level of play," Libby said. "That was what I needed to confirm. But more specifically, we needed to have people that were able to be international representatives as well.” Moriarty jumped at the chance, hoping the experience will also help raise his chances of playing for a Division 1 college and eventually going pro.

The tournament took place at the Pine Ridge Indian Res ervation in South Dakota on August 6. The Oceti Sakowin team, part of the Lakota, Nekota, Dakota confederacy Sioux tribes, won the full-field, 10-man game 17-6, while Panama prevailed in the "sixes" game – a shorter lacrosse game with fewer players and a higher tempo of play – 22-18. Moriarty said he is grateful to the players he met on the Panama na tional team who welcomed him and treated him like one of their own. “They were just overall good guys,” he said.
