all is the start of the colder weather, yes, but it is also the start of the “comfort food” season, which continues through Thanksgiving and Christmas until bleak January arrives and it’s time to eat healthily again. But we have a ways to go before that, and a lot of good eating coming up in the meantime. Along these lines, my daughter and her boyfriend have a fall tradition. Actually it’s year-round, but especially cool in the fall — they go to breakfast at The Apple House restaurant in Linden as often as they can. The food is excellent, but the main feature is the fresh, homemade apple butter cinnamon donuts. We went to a similar destination when I was growing up, The Big Apple. It wasn’t a restaurant, it was a huge old barn selling the produce of the orchards. They had lots of apples, cider, and, like The Apple House, amazing homemade donuts. There was a window to the kitchen so you could watch the donuts being made. Sometimes there was a line, but it was totally worth it to get one hot and fresh, right out of the kitchen and eat it with apple cider. This year at The Apple House, their donuts pretty much kept the restaurant afloat during the pandemic. They started selling the donuts online and ended up shipping them to customers all over the country. Their theory is that homemade donuts are the ultimate comfort food, which people were craving during the lockdown. Now, as restrictions are easing and the restaurant is open again, the phrase “comfort food” takes on additional meaning. Just as much as the seasonal traditions and the food, being able to get out and enjoy our community and support our local restaurants again becomes just as comforting. As the cold weather comes, let’s continue to think about our restaurants and patronize them as much as possible. If they’ve reached their maximum capacity and it’s too cold to sit outside, we can go back to takeout. Bring it home and eat in front of your fire. It can be a new tradition.

uman biology helps us predict the metamorphosis of a three-year-old toddler girl into a stunning young woman at the age of eighteen. What isn’t as predictable is realizing that childhood doodles and paintings can potentially fuel further creative passions. This is what happened to Annie Hunter from Warrenton. When Hunter was just three years old, her mother helped her older brother enter an art exhibition at the Fauquier County Fair, an annual event held in Warrenton each year. The fair gives county residents opportunities to exhibit local agricultural products and participate in livestock games and events. It also gives budding artists a competitive space to showcase their art, awarding nominal dollar prizes and ribbons to the winners as determined by a point system. Art exhibitors may contribute handmade, original artistic creations in multiple categories using assorted media, such as fine arts, digital media, food, and floriculture. Three-year-old Hunter didn’t really know or care about all those categories, but she knew enough that she wanted to be a part of the fair. “My mom knew about it [the fair] and had my older brother entering. I just decided to do it!” she explained, with no additional special reason why she wanted to make simple art and enter it into the fair. After participating the first year, Hunter caught the fair bug and decided she wanted to continue being part of the art exhibitions each year. She spent the next fourteen years

making diverse art projects and submitting them to the fair. “I always loved making things,” noted Hunter. It felt natural for her to create things at home. Participating in the county fair at first was just something she did; it grew into a desire to make more art. Each year, the fair published a pamphlet announcing categories for exhibitors to showcase their art. Hunter used that pamphlet to guide her in taking photos, making decisions on what she would do, and planning her entries, thriving on the organizational aspect of this approach. Between 2011 and 2015 when Hunter was in 3rd - 7th grades, she ramped up

production of her art and submitted at least 100 items each year, winning the fair's Debbie Cornwall Exhibitor award for most points earned among the exhibitors for five consecutive years. She immersed herself in paintings, photography, digital art, jewelry, baking, and flowers, as just some of the examples of artistic works. She also became highly competitive, not just wanting people to see her art, but having a strong desire to win in her categories. Hunter’s self-discipline and inner motivation led her to win the fair’s Debbie Cornwall Exhibitor award for submitting the most items and gaining the most points among the art exhibitors. She was surprised and proud to win this award five years in a row. Deeply proud of her accomplishments as a steady art exhibitor at the fair, Hunter was looking forward to the fair in 2020, but when the pandemic hit, fair organizers felt it was in the best interest of public safety to cancel the fair this year. Perhaps Hunter was disappointed with the news for a brief time, but she didn’t rest on her laurels for very long for a unique reason: she was bored! As it turned out, Hunter isn’t just creatively talented, she is academically gifted as well. An honor student at Kettle Run High School, Hunter had all As in her classes at the time schools were shut down in mid-March 2020. Her teachers told her that her good grades would carry over to the end of the school year and she would not be required to turn in additional assignments. Without the obligation of going to school or working on additional assignments, Hunter had plenty of time to spare. ”I had free time during corona. One day, I happened to be cleaning the basement because I had nothing better to do. I found

an old box of beads and made a beaded necklace. I texted some friends and they asked, ‘Can you make me one?’ “ noted Hunter with the same ease as she did when describing her initial decision to be a part of the Fauquier County Fair at the age of three. Hunter made her first necklace using string. Seeing the positive response from her friends made her enthusiastic to make more. She watched YouTube videos and tutorials and learned how to use the correct tools for beading, stringing beads, and adding clasps. She purchased the supplies she needed and began making necklaces, bracelets, bracelet sets, and earrings. That original spark she had from participating as an art exhibitor at the county fair all those years was igniting a new passion. Since she could no longer make

art to showcase at the fair, she turned her efforts to making art for others and selling it. “It gave me some purpose during corona,” stated Hunter. Less than one month after schools closed, Hunter had already made a bunch of jewelry, established a business name, designed a logo, created distinctive packaging, and set up a shop on Etsy. April 18 marked the day Hunter finalized her plans and made her Etsy shop public. Since then, the teen entrepreneur has enjoyed successes in leaps and bounds with her first business, Beaded Works Studio. On July 17, just one day shy of being in business for three months, Hunter was ecstatic to learn her Etsy shop had just generated its 100th sale. “This morning I woke up to find out I reached 100 orders! I can’t wrap my mind around it...” exclaimed Hunter on her business Facebook page. Hunter has been understandably excited with her experiences in business, but she has remained humble in her thinking. “Before I had sales, I was still happy creating something on my own with my own ideas.” Next up for this teen entrepreneur is college. She is starting her first year at Virginia Tech in the fall and already has plans to continue her business on campus. New mom Ashley Emigh, fiancee Michael, and baby Rosa.
Hours 49 of Labor One woman’s journey to first-time motherhood BY SUSAN TULINO
O
n June 2, Ashley Emigh of Bealeton, entered Novant Health UVA Health System Prince William Medical Center ready to have a baby. The 33-year-old first-time mother was 39-weeks pregnant and had a scheduled induction date to mitigate the risk of complications from gestational diabetes. With ongoing restrictions and safety protocols in place due to the coronavirus pandemic, Emigh knew that her labor and delivery experience might be a bit unusual, but it turned out to be complicated for other reasons including a lengthy labor, a neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) admission and a blood infection.
A Long Labor Emigh was admitted on the evening of June 2, but it wasn’t until 4:45 a.m. that her water broke, and her induction officially began. However, Emigh wasn’t experiencing contractions, and she soon learned that her cervix was barely dilated. At 9:30 p.m. on June 3, her care team administered Pitocin, a natural hormone used to induce labor and cause contractions. “My contractions became stronger and more painful, but I wanted to see if I could deliver without an epidural or pain medicine,” said Emigh. “The pain got so bad though, that I was unable to rest comfortably and was pacing around, and began crying. I received two doses of intravenous pain medication early on the morning of June 4. I broke down and requested an epidural and a catheter around 8 a.m. and was finally able to get some rest.”
10
{ OCTOBER 2020 |
However, four hours later, Emigh’s cervix was dilated only two of the ten centimeters needed to begin pushing. By 5 p.m., she was only at five centimeters. By now, it had been 20 hours since the Pitocin had been administered, and the baby was starting to show signs of distress. The option of a Cesarean section came up. “My heart dropped,” said Emigh. “I’d been so hopeful to be able to deliver vaginally. But I couldn’t risk the baby’s health. Within a few minutes, I was in the operating room. My fiancé, Michael, was there to reassure me.” Nearly 49 hours after being admitted, at 7:57 p.m. on June 4, Emigh heard her daughter, Rosa, cry for the first time. However, both mother and baby would require additional medical attention before they could go home as a family of three.
An Extended Stay Rosa had difficulty breathing shortly after delivery and spent her first five days of life on IV antibiotics in the NICU. After being brought to the recovery area for rest, clean up and a uterine examination, Emigh was taken to visit Rosa, and was able to return frequently over the next few days. “She just needed a little ‘boost of health,’” said Emigh. “The nurses were wonderful about answering all of my questions. Since I was in recovery, I needed to be in my room resting whenever I wasn’t with her, but I could sense that she was in good care.” Rosa’s admission to the NICU wasn’t the only cause for concern for the family. Emigh spiked a fever the day before her

scheduled discharge date, later learning that she had a bacterial blood infection that required antibiotics.
Memorable Care After an eventful 10 days in the hospital, mother and daughter were discharged on June 12. Despite her long stay, Emigh focuses on the good when looking back on her experience. “When you can feel comfortable from day one to discharge, you know you’re in a great place. I couldn’t have asked for a safer environment, a better team of doctors and nurses, or a more compassionate bedside manner,” said Emigh. “Even when shift change came around, and a new nurse was caring for me or Rosa, I could see how well the providers communicated with one another.” Emigh gives much of the credit for her positive patient experiences to the NICU nurses who bonded with Rosa and helped her family through a tough time. “We are fortunate that Rosa’s stay in the NICU was short-lived, but it was still scary to know that our daughter needed extra medical attention,” Emigh shared. “Even after her discharge, the team made sure we were set with diapers, wipes, formula and more. They really took care of our family.” ❖ To learn more about maternity services at Novant Health UVA Health System, visit NovantHealthUVA. org/services/womens-services/maternity-care.

Fostering creativity and community with paint-your-own pottery
s you enter the art studio and retail space for Earth, Glaze, and Fire, LLC on Main Street in Warrenton, the bright, lightly-colored space with pale beige hardwood floors, white walls, and shelves upon shelves of pottery and ceramics welcome you. The studio features one dark mauve main wall that elegantly frames and displays the pure white pottery. The tables and furniture are plain black, allowing boys, girls, and adults of all ages to enjoy the tactile experience of working with pottery, ceramics, and canvas without the distractions of random color splashes. The reason for little color is purposeful: the premise of this family-owned business is to give customers the opportunity to browse among the multitude of ceramic and pottery ‘blanks’ and paint their own pottery selection using the color, style, and painting technique of their choice. Though a few whimsically painted pieces appear throughout the studio, they are mere examples of artistic renditions meant to innocently inspire. There is a wide variety of blank pottery and ceramic items to choose to work with, including food-related items such as coffee mugs, dishes, teapots, and server ware, as well as animals, including birds, rhinos, elephants, and fish, to name a few. In case you need some help with imagination, there’s

a pretty good chance a Buddha, unicorn, mermaid, prince, tiny mushroom house, or garden gnome may divert you to a new dimension of fantasy and intrigue. Earth, Glaze, and Fire offers customers the opportunity to pick their favorite ceramics or pottery pieces to paint. Studio staff then glazes and fires the pieces, and a week later, customers pick up their hand-painted pieces and take them to enjoy at home. The studio also offers classes in clay handbuilding (working with raw clay to roll and build personalized and often intricate works of art using simple tools), allows customers to use the pottery wheel to spin pieces into shapes, and offers painting classes, summer camps, team-building events, and loads of theme parties for brides-to-be, family get-togethers, and more. However, to describe Earth, Glaze, and Fire as merely an art studio or a retail store that sells finished pottery would be as empty and remiss as calling Fauquier County just a place in Virginia with a bunch of cornfields, mountains, and the occasional horse or cow. It is more than that. The heart of the studio lies in its owners who quietly put in their time to work for the company for several years, had an opportunity to buy the business, and created an unusual path to success from the get-go. The mother-daughter team of Nadia (daughter) and Danielle Schwarz (mother) has owned Earth, Glaze, and Fire since June 2018. They come from a long family line of artists. Nadia’s father worked with fine china, needle point arts, and oil painting. Nadia teaches classes, works with ceramics and pottery, and paints on china and canvas. Danielle is well-known for her diligent attention to highly detailed paintwork. Before becoming owners, both Nadia and Danielle worked at Earth, Glaze, and Fire since approximately 2012. It was previously a ceramic shop, but with new ownership came a decision to make it more of an art experience than simply a shop that sold things. In fact, the sales aspect was such a low priority that it became secondary to their true mission. At the heart of the matter was an unpublished, unmarketed, private commitment to maintain an art studio that functions principally to provide a warm, friendly, relationship-building atmosphere and unite the local community.

“The opportunity [to buy] was given to us because the [previous] owner wanted to retire and move to Florida. We played with the option [of ownership]. We knew this would be good for the community,” explained Nadia about her decision to purchase the business. She was reluctant to give up the pottery shop where she worked alongside her mother for the previous six years. Danielle expounded with a simple phrase that spoke volumes about their character, “We’re huge with [people who have] disabilities. If we closed, where were they going to go?” She phrased her comment as a question, but revealed her motivation in the process. Both ladies cared deeply about the customers of Earth, Glaze, and Fire. The ladies were already well experienced working with groups of disabled individuals who relied on the art studio for enjoyment. They realized this wasn’t just any old activity to those with disabilities — for those customers, it was more of a life force that provided therapy, gave them meaning, and helped build their social-emotional skills. Nadia and Danielle were not willing to compromise those benefits to the community by closing. In their first year as owners, the ladies gratefully received an outpouring of community support. They stayed busy serving customers, providing advice and instruction on painting techniques, and hosting camps for children and creative paint parties for adults. Throughout 2019, Nadia and Danielle enjoyed hosting art contests, picking artists of the month, and engaging their community through different means. They obtained a liquor license through Virginia ABC and served wine and beer to customers indoors. They also served complimentary coffee and supported off-site food purchases by encouraging customers to dine at eateries along Main Street, thereby furthering their commitment to the local community. During the pandemic, business continues, but with spacedout seating giving ample room for customers to paint with social distancing rules in place. With a loyal following from Haymarket, Culpeper, and D.C., Earth, Glaze, and Fire welcomes customers from everywhere. Danielle noted that the pottery is fragile and breaks easily. Yet, both ladies are consciously aware that working with pottery strengthens all who work with it by building community one piece at a time. ❖ Earth Glaze and Fire 80 Main Street, Warrenton | 540-878-5701 earthglazefire.com | facebook.com/earthglazeandfire

Fall Fun! Check out our assortment of things to do and places to go (safely) this season BY AMANDA M. SOCCI
S
eptember 22 marked the official start of fall this year. Pumpkins have begun sprouting life-like features in their quest to become emoji-filled jack-o-lanterns. Families are busy planning to top their Halloween costumes from last year with new, timely ideas. Tall, pleasant scarecrow figures in their raggedy clothes and soft straw bodies sit patiently in retail stores, waiting to be purchased and loved by revelers of the autumn season. The daylight hours are shorter and we’re all waiting with anticipation to see if our kids will be going trickor-treating. It has been a year unlike any other in recent history. While it is true our fall traditions may look differently now, the celebration itself is not canceled! Happiness is never canceled! We can’t stop living happy lives. Despite the current health crisis of the coronavirus, we must rise above the challenges and seek fun in alternative ways — fall fun, to be exact! Here are some family-friendly ways to relish autumnal celebrations, even with social distancing rules in place. Don’t harp on what you can’t do this year; be inspired by all you can do! As per Laura Torpy, tourism coordinator for Fauquier County, “We’re two months out [from celebrating fall activities]; we are waiting to see where we are with the pandemic.” Though many annual fall festivals and activities have already been canceled and the status of some events is still not known, Lifestyle was able to confirm details about all the fun places listed below. Enjoy!

I
t’s autumn again! One sign is the cooler — and less humid? — weather, but another sure sign in Fauquier County is the scarecrows going up in Old Town for the Families 4 Fauquier Scarecrow Contest. Historically, scarecrows were meant to scare birds away from crops, but these scarecrows have a much different purpose: to bring the community together. Organized by Rachel Pierce of the local nonprofit Families 4 Fauquier, businesses and organizations create a scarecrow to be displayed on Main Street, often designed to match the theme of their store. The displays remain up in Old Town for the month of October, and the winners are announced at the end of the month. This is clearly a labor of love for Rachel; as a purely philanthropic event, there are no fees or fundraising for the nonprofit. It’s just for fun. Rachel said, “I really love it and I love that we have the opportunity to do this. I think it just changes the whole atmosphere in Old Town. It really gets you in the autumn spirit. It brings families out, and people who may not normally come to Old Town, they’ll come down to check it out. It’s so much fun to see the different scarecrows and the creativity that goes into creating each one.”
Families 4 Fauquier & Beyond Inc., is passionate about our community. The organization is dedicated to promoting community involvement by uniting and connecting local area families that care about helping to make a difference in Fauquier County and beyond. It is committed to strengthening and enriching the lives of children and families by offering ways to become good citizens and contribute to our community in positive and meaningful ways. Available resources include a community calendar, family activities, volunteering opportunities, family friendly community service projects, summer camps listing, preschool directory, and social and educational resources. Families 4 Fauquier is an official 501 (c)3 public charity. Donations are tax deductible.

THIS YEAR-ROUND LOCAL FAVORITE IS ESPECIALLY POPULAR IN AUTUMN STORY AND PHOTOS BY LINDSAY HOGEBOOM
G
eorge McIntyre and his daughter Katie Tewell are entrepreneurs of the truest form – with nine businesses ranging from a restaurant to a storage facility and a food truck to a gift shop, there isn’t much they haven’t had their hands in. But of all that they’ve crafted, their most notable creation may be the close community they’ve shaped through their widely loved restaurant, The Apple House. In 1904, George and Katie’s ancestors established their orchard in Linden, Virginia, which was then passed down through generations. In 1963, George’s stepfather and another local orchardist purchased the building that now serves as a restaurant and gift shop to use as an apple packing facility. This facility became one of the first roadside gift

shops and convenience stores of the area, offering Virginia hams, apples, and other Virginia-related items to residents and travelers. “Family after family, we stayed here,” says George, “and when I was coming along I had my children – Katie being the eldest – come to work for me when they were little. I’ve been here 44 years, and Katie started in...” Katie chimes in and says with a laugh, “1979. I say I’ve worked here for 40 years, and that’s how old I am.” Today, The Apple House restaurant is a staple of the Linden community. In 2019, it was selected for one of Virginia Living magazine’s Best BBQ Awards. Earlier this

year the restaurant was awarded the Best Small Town Restaurant in Virginia by Reader’s Digest. And it’s no wonder the business is award-worthy – George and Katie are passionate about their work and are always looking for ways to incorporate the next best thing. For instance, a few years back they had purchased a deli in town as their next endeavor. “Foot traffic wasn’t what we needed it to be for our space and what we were paying in rent, so we watched and saw what was going on with food trucks,” says Katie. “We decided, ‘if they can’t come to us, we’ll go to where they are.’ So we started that and this is our fifth season with Fork’d….That’s one of the things I’ve enjoyed most recently, because I get to go interact and cook and have fun, and that’s what I enjoy so much. But even now, it’s like, ‘Okay, what else can we do? What can we change? What can we do to make ourselves better? We’re never content.” George agrees, “We like finding new businesses within our own business.” When asked which part of the business they are most passionate about, they respond in unison: “Everything.” The Apple House has a loyal customer base thanks not only to its delicious food and treats, but also the atmosphere of joy and friendship that is so apparent, starting with the staff. “We love the people who work for us,” George says. “It’s like a big family here.” And when George says it’s like family, in some cases he means literally. “We have moms and their children that work for us,” says Katie. “We actually probably have three families that work here. We like to have fun – that’s the key.” George says this culture is in large part thanks to Katie’s contributions. “It has greatly improved with Katie’s addition,” he says, “because she emphasizes the custom – and I had always done this subconsciously – of treating our people as equals, and as family members. Dad had people who had been with him for forty-plus years. We’ve got some in here that have been here twenty-plus years right now and they seem to like it.” The community George and Katie have established became especially important this year in light of the COVID pandemic. “This year has been hard in general,” says Katie, “but I’m still just amazed at how we came together. We knew that we would not be able to have anybody come in the front door and in like 24 hours we had online [ordering available]. We had talked about it for years…[but] we’re so hands on that we didn’t go over that. But our staff pulled together.” During the pandemic, the business not only pivoted to take-out ordering, but also to shipping their famous apple

butter cinnamon donuts, in some cases cross-country. Katie explains that the back of her t-shirt reads “We’re here because the donuts are essential,” and says, “it really became that way for us. It kept our business chugging along through the worst part of COVID. We shipped, I want to say, over 2000 donuts. Easily over 2000.” George and Katie believe the desire for donuts has been especially strong during the pandemic because people are looking for comfort. “It was…a taste that reminded them of something good and triggered a memory,” says Katie. “It was cool, because the notes we would get would be like, ‘Thank you so much for doing this. It felt so good to get a taste of home.’ That was really awesome.” George and Katie say that these customers and friends are largely to thank for the restaurant’s continued success throughout the pandemic. “You talk about loyalty,” says George, “a lot of it was a result of just that. People knew we were having problems and they supported us.” And, Katie says, “People recognize how close we all are, and the atmosphere that we create within ourselves. That always makes you feel good because that makes you feel like you’re doing something right. We give…so much to our community, but nothing makes us happier than to do that.” When asked what they love about the area where they live and work, George responds, “The closeness of it. People are genuine.” Katie elaborates on this sentiment by stating, “He's right. You know, so many people don’t get to actually make relationships and help each other out. A lot of businesses are afraid to help each other out, but that's something that dad has always taught me that's important – whether [it’s] throwing ideas back and forth or mentoring each other. I don't think you necessarily have that opportunity or relationship in a larger community.” George responds by stating that Katie “represents what an employer should be like, because she’s devoted to it, and she sets the example. She’s the mentor for so many people and so many other businesses in this community.” To that, Katie replies with a smile, “I had a good teacher.”❖

Seasonal decorations are more important than ever this year STORY AND PHOTOS BY AMY BOYLE

his year more than ever, our homes have become our sanctuaries. While we aren’t likely entertaining as much there is still the opportunity to make our homes warm and cozy to celebrate fall. Pumpkins on the porch and dried florals in a vase help welcome the coming season in your home. It is easy to add fall touches both indoors and out with neutral pillows, foraged branches from the yard and some pumpkins from the local farm stands. Here’s to enjoying fall!
Our home has a neutral background so I can easily add seasonal decor, this fall I kept it simple and added earth-toned accents through pillows and other accents. Fall is a great time to add layers of texture to your home, think cozy throws, woven baskets and scented candles. All these are nice additions as the days grow shorter and colder.

Fall colors typically mimic those found in nature, deep burgundy, brilliant yellow and burnt orange just like the changing leaves. I tend to bring in more subtle variations of the same tones to keep our home feeling cohesive. One of my favorite things about fall is nature provides us so many things to decorate with. At this time of year local stands abound with fun colored pumpkins, I love to mix in the bluish cinderella-style ones on our front porch.

The Tolson Experience From a tiny general store in southern Fauquier County, Tolson Appliance & Design Center has become the Piedmont’s premier appliance destination with its longtime reputation of customer service and support BY HANNAH SAMLALL
I
PHOTOS BY CHRISTINE CRADDOCK
f you grew up in Fauquier County, you can’t remember a time when Tolson’s Appliance Center wasn’t around. There is a simple explanation for this; it’s because Tolson’s has been around since 1833, just 23 years after the town of Warrenton was incorporated. As with many longtime businesses, Tolson’s has gone through many changes as it evolved over the years. The first Tolson establishment began on the edge of the railroad tracks in Calverton as a store named “General Merchandise.” As was typical for that day and age, a wide variety of items were sold such as clothes, paint, hardware, groceries, wagons, buggies, fertilizer, and even coffins. Through the years and succeeding management, other inventory was added gradually: dairy and poultry feed, then appliances (as a Frigidaire dealer), more hardware, and then electrical and plumbing supplies. Tolsons as we know it today began when then owner Vince Tolson sold off the feed and hardware part of the business to Groves Hardware in Remington, and moved forward with developing the appliance inventory. He increased warehouse space and concentrated on selling a variety of appliance brands and then added vacuums to the portfolio. Through the years, Tolson Appliance Center has grown its breadth of products and clientele. The continued growth and sustainability of the store was a direct reflection of the hard work of its employees. The store manager, James Brown, was an experienced, knowledgeable, hardworking manager devoted to customer service. His passion for the business was passed along to the next generation of employees. During the ‘70s and ‘80s, Tolson’s developed its longtime outstanding reputation for service and support. In 1988, the store was purchased by retired Brigadier General Church M. Matthews, Jr. Following a successful 25-year career in the US Army, General Matthews decided to plant his roots in Warrenton, and saw an opportunity in Tolson’s. With Tolson’s reputation and skilled employees, General Matthews took the already-solid small business and expanded it by designing and building the red-roofed building where the business is located today. In the newly expanded showroom, Matthews was able to offer additional moderate to highend products to his customers. To complement the appliance business, he opened a kitchen cabinet and design business, Warren Cabinets.

Both businesses soared under his command. After Church’s death in 1996, the business passed to his wife, Elizabeth “Wooz” Matthews. Even with no business experience and certainly no appliance expertise, the store continued to grow, doubling its sales during Elizabeth’s 12-year tenure. She modernized the operation by bringing in computers to automate point of sale and inventories. The showroom was again expanded to bring in additional products for customers. Additional vendors, such as Miele, were added to give our customers further luxury and choice. When Wooz left the store to work with her own cattle operation on Thistle Hill Farm, she handed the reins over to their son, Church Matthews III, who was then working in the private sector after graduation from West Point and a five-year assignment to Fort Hood, Texas. While continuing to work in in-vitro diagnostics, Church dove into the business with enthusiasm and worked on renovating the interior of the showroom. The carpet was replaced with polished concrete and the displays were updated with new cabinets and arranged to show more appliances. New staff joined, infusing the business with “can do” people whose sole mission is to provide a customer experience like no other. Church explained, “In 2019, we changed our business model. The marketplace had become more transactional. This was not a market we could compete in. Tolson’s joined a buying cooperative that now allows us to compete directly with Lowe’s and Home Depot 99 percent of the time. In fact, we are more competitive because we deliver and install our own appliances as well as offer limited services. It is not farmed out like the box stores. This business model also allows us to order non-stocked items twice weekly so our turn around from purchase to delivery is that much quicker.” In addition to their competitive pricing, Tolson’s hasn’t lost their outstanding customer service. Upon walking into the store, you’ll likely be greeted by a one-eyed golden retriever named Chloe. The staff at Tolson’s offers a tailored experience where they’ll help you find exactly what you’re looking for, rather than just the latest and greatest. 2019 saw the business take off, and 2020 has been mixed with the COVID-19 pandemic. Church said, “We saw a drastic drop in sales in the February-March time frame. Since April that trend has been reversed and we are selling more than we ever have. We also realize that there is still room for improvement. We are undertaking the task of transitioning to new software this year. While this has not been easy, it will allow us to improve many areas of the business and ultimately provide the customers a better experience. Our plan is to grow our business one customer at a time.” ❖

Wine and the New Normal Local wineries are offering safe environments to spend a day in the country enjoying locally made wines BY MARK LUNA
I
THE EXPERT:
Mark Luna
HIS EXPERTISE:
Wine
Mark Luna is a Portfolio Rep for Roanoke Valley Wine Company. He has a Level 3 Advanced Certification from the Wine & Spirits Education Trust (WSET) and is a member of the prestigious Wine Scholar Guild, where he’s finishing his Italian Wine Scholar post-nominal accreditation. Through and beyond his work for RVWC, Mark writes, teaches and guest-speaks about wine in a variety of both industry and privately held events. He lives in Nokesville with his family. For events, Mark can be reached at info@winespique.com.
modicum of normalcy in the local wine world, there are many wineries in the immediate Warrenton area doing their absolute best to provide for their patrons a wonderful wine experience, an actual getaway, while maintaining the cleanest environment absolutely possible. At the wineries, which all follow safe COVID practices and social distancing, outdoor spaces to spread out — with awesome views — are readily available. Bring along chairs and blankets, as well as your kids and pets (check each winery’s pet policy ahead of time, but most are dog-friendly). While most wineries have a limited selection of snacks to purchase, you are also invited to pack a picnic to enjoy with the wine. It will be a day well spent in the Virginia wine country, helping to ease the mind and excite the palate. Highlighting a couple of my recent new favorite wine destinations… An easy twenty minute drive west of Old Town Warrenton, out Highway 211, sits the beautiful property of Gray Ghost Winery.

t’s good to be back…at least in print. Though I did have a wine column for the August issue of the Haymarket and Gainesville Lifestyle magazines, it was written right before the sky fell in March, and I took a hiatus thereafter. Needless to say, it’s been a five-month stretch for the ages, as I’m sure it has been for you as well. As it was last year, and will be next year, October is Virginia Wine Month. With the focus being on Warrenton, my hopeful new hometown, I’ve decided to mention and recommend a few local wineries in the general area that are not only producing lovely wines, but are also doing everything they can to both survive the wrath of this pandemic. They are adjusting to the ‘new normal’ of operations, and endeavoring to provide safe distance tastings while still enjoying the intimacy of their wines. Maintaining clean, healthy and safe practices has always been paramount to the success of the food and beverage industry, and wineries are certainly no exception to that truth. Beyond the cellar, which any winemaker will tell you should be the cleanest space on the planet, a great winery lives or dies by its antiseptic status. Immense cleaning protocols take place in normal times; and in this current COVID-19 world, going above and beyond immense is all the more mandatory. In an effort, however, to preserve some

Celebrating their 26th year, Gray Ghost offers an array of award-winning wines to complement both their finely appointed tasting room and luscious garden grounds. Family owned and operated, GG honors old world vinification practices, with hand harvesting, unfined reds and judicious barrel regimens. The two standout wines are the full-bodied Gray Ghost Chardonnay Reserve 2017, which earned Best of Class - 2020 at the New World International Wine Competition, in California, and the powerful Gray Ghost Cabernet Sauvignon 2017, which landed the prestigious Double Gold - 2020 award at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. These wines are not messing around! And neither is Gray Ghost, when it comes to consuming these beautifully made wines in a safe, stress free atmosphere, both indoors and out. Blue Valley Vineyard and Winery is nestled less than 20 miles north/northwest of Warrenton, up Highway 17, in Delaplane. Owners John and Eleni (Helen) Zissios opened the winery in April 2015, after purchasing the 63 acre property years prior. The land itself was once part of a much larger swath of countryside that was once owned

by John Marshall, the fourth Chief Justice of the United States. What was to be a private home estate became instead a beautiful winery, built on the family’s heritage of hard work, respect, unity and hospitality…an embodiment of their Greek roots. The Blue Valley estate is planted to petit verdot, cabernet sauvignon and franc, chambourcin, chardonnay, sauvignon blanc, viognier and muscat ottonel, all wine varieties that are well suited to the climate and soils of this part of Virginia. Additionally, all vinification processes take place in their 10k square foot production facility, one of the largest in Virginia. Of their impressive line-up of white, rose’ and red wines, both the 2016 Estate Sauvignon Blanc and the 2016 Sangiovese wines are true highlights, with each wine receiving a multitude of awards in various wine competitions from coast to coast. From stainless steel tanks made in South Africa to oak barrels of French and American cooperages, no expense is spared in facilitating the process of converting quality fruit to quality wines. True to form, a visit to BV is a highly worthy experience. Weekend reservations are recommended, though not required, and a gift card purchase of $30 per person (for food and wine) will land you a 2 ½ hour block of time. All mask and social distancing protocols are in place, and you can hear all about the Zissios’ family history of three generations of winemaking, while enjoying a glass of one of their wonderful wines. Other wineries in the surrounding area that are open for ‘safe’ business include Jennifer McCloud’s Chrysalis Vineyards at the Ag District, located in Middleburg…with limited indoor seating reserved for VIP customers and socially distanced outdoor seating available, be sure to get acquainted with their Albarino 2019 and their various Norton bottlings. Head south of Old Town and visit Granite Heights Winery, as well as the boutique farm winery Molon Lava. Both are very convenient to Warrenton and offer a wonderful weekend experience of wine and beauty. With Warrenton as center compass, you can drift in any given direction and find multiple, worthy wine stops; mostly family owned properties who are growing their own grapes and producing their own wines, all while trying to stand tall in an upside-down world. Supporting their businesses, enjoying all they have to offer, while doing all we can to stay safe and healthy is more important now than ever before...Until next time, Happy Vino’ing. ❖
