[1] The familiar entrance was positioned to ease the awkwardness of an event in with COVID, with digital registrations, ticketing and distancing measures. Curator, Hashim Sarkis designed the exhibition statement around the pragmatics and stratagems in the future of living.

[2] As One Planet (Giardini, Central Pavilion) aims to depicts the third scale (planetary) through a) Making Worlds: anticipating and calibrating the future of the planet; b) Designing the Assembly of the Future: proposing a speculative more-than-human future for the United Nations; c) Changing Designs for Climate Change: presenting solutions in the face of the global degradation of the environment; d) Networking Space: connecting between Earth and outer space.

[3] The pavilion called "American Framing", explores the history of softwood as a building material. The designer highlighted that the structure for most building depicts a sort of beauty that is usually unnoticed, with sculptural qualities that remain invisible but also the strength that supports the building ;microcosm of the American way of living.

[4] The exhibition discussed future as "uncertain" and in perpetual process, the exhibition experience starts with a heterogeneous cloud of portfolios. the space that frames the cloud includes a navigation tunnel that reveals the continuous transformation of reality, channeling visitors to explore the four side rooms and roam around a non-hierarchical positioning of the informations and selected projects.

[5] The Korean Pavillion "Future Schools" transformed the structure into an explorative academic facility: a catalyst for cooperative engagement around these global issues like climate change, migration and tech advancement. [6] British Pavilion "The Garden of Privatised Delights" aims to address the ownership, usage and politics of privatised public spaces especially in the new age of post-pandemic. [7] The Nordic Pavilion, co‑owned by Sweden, Finland, and Norway, put in place a "model for co-housing". The visitor can walk through and explore a cross-section of a prototype cohousing project that will include communal and private areas designed to feel like real living spaces

[8] Titled "Composite Presence", the Belgian pavilion showcased this layered urban landscape to tackles the question of 'how can the city and architecture flourish together?'. The curators recreated 50 architecture projects of the past 20 years, portraying a sensible architectural ecology by bringing together different styles, functions, and typologies.

[9] Hashim Sarkis lofty rhetorics on the future of living reflected well in his manifesto, Following his lead, Pritzker Price Architect Alejandro Aravena attempts to answer with a strings of other questions to his native and indigenous people of Chile. Building places to get to know each other (künü), building places to parley (koyaü-we). The juxtapose sculpture (amidst venice very monolithic architecture style) also addressed the communication through architecture that allow the democratic process to happen.

[10] In the first part of Arsenale, you’ll find yourself walking through the gallery of halls with various installation: a) Designing for New Bodies: addressing changes in the perception and conception of the human body; b) Living with Other Beings: foregrounding empathetic behavior and engagement with other beings.

[11] In the second part (or scale, as Sarkis mentioned in his manifesto) the exhibition continues with "As New Households" : a) Catering to New Demographics: responding to changing compositions and densities of households; b) Inhabiting New Tectonics: exploring technologies that enable innovative housing construction; c) Living Apart Together: expanding the possibilities of the apartment building as a collective housing typology.

Notably missing is the Malaysian presence in this year's Biennale. However, our ASEAN neighbors displayed their take on this year's subject matter as a part of "As Emerging Communities" located in Arsenale.

[12] Singapore introduces their style of living and gathering by looking at different spatial typologies across the island-state. Thailand [13] answered architecture's role in promoting the human vs other species coexisting naturally and culturally. Philippine [14] focuses on the idea of mutual support through built architecture.

[15] Artist Lorenzo Quinn has returned to the city with yet another phenomenal work with built six pairs of hands joining over the historic Arsenale. At almost 50 feet (15m) high and 65 feet (20m) wide.

This photo essay was submitted by Syuqran S in Mid-July 2021 as a picture essay of his trip at last year's 17th Intenational Architecture Exhibition at the Venice Biennale 2021, on behalf of Pertubuhan Akitek Malaysia -PAM (Malaysian Institute of Architects) via PAM NEXT EDITORIAL. Syuqran S is an architecture-trained Data Analyst/Urban Designer who recently concluded his Master in Smart Cities and Communities as an Erasmus Mundus Master Scholar. Previously, he was a Senior Designer in Design, Planning + Economics (DP+E), AECOM Malaysia, and Veritas Architects, Kuala Lumpur. He is driven by the passion for data centric approach to design (thinking) with great emphasis on human behavior and user profile where his research pursuit lies in understanding urban dynamics, building performance and powering cities.
