The Cosmic Mirror

Introduction Astrology helps us to frame our sense of what is happening, what has happened and what might happen. None of us, as individuals, creates the collective reality. Yet each of us decides how we meet it. In this calendar we offer some insight into what the planetary influences for the year symbolize. This is not the same as predicting what will happen. Astrology is like a cosmic mirror in that it reflects our reality down here on Earth. We all know that we cannot blame the mirror for the way things look but we can learn a lot in the looking. Although the actual date of an astrological event is significant, what is more interesting is the collective theme it suggests. In The Cosmic Mirror we offer you perspectives from astrology and traditional earth-based practices. The Wheel of the Year turns in the heavens and on earth; we say “as above, so below”. Enjoy this tool to navigate the year to come. – Julie and Deirdre 2011 Astrology Guide

The Twelve Great Myths or Signs of the Zodiac One way to see the twelve signs of the Zodiac is as twelve great stories that describe our journey as humans from beginning to end. It is likely that the development of each individual - the story of a life so to say – is a reflection of the development of the human race as a whole. By understanding one we can learn more about the other. The journey begins with Aries, the sign of birth and beginnings. For most of us, we arrive here head first; spent with the effort of labour. Here we find the pioneering spirit and the intense need to identify oneself as separate and unique. Any birth requires a tremendous effort on the part of the individual. Aries is symbolized by the ram but it can also be a lamb. Some Aries are bold risk takers and others are shy and overly cautious. In any case, Aries represents the need we all have for a healthy sense of individuality.

x

From Aries we move into Taurus, the sign of earthly embodiment. Having been born we are ready to explore the world with our senses. We move toward things that are pleasurable to our senses and away from things that smell, taste, feel, look or sound bad. From this instinctive reaction to life we develop values. Taurus is symbolized by the bull. On one hand Taurus represents the inclination to simply enjoy the wonders of the natural world. On the other hand the bull may see red and feel rage when enjoyment is frustrated.

c

27

The Cosmic Mirror

As we leave Taurus we enter Gemini, the airy sign of mental activity. Here is the so-called nursery; our siblings; the learning of language; our early education. In Gemini we are curious and want to learn everything indiscriminately. Faster than the speed of light is the energy of thought which can take us from happiness to misery in an instant. Gemini is symbolized by the twins; one up, one down. They trick themselves and the rest of us endlessly. We cannot tell which is which and we cannot be sure what trick they will play on us next. The trickster, of course, is the mind itself.

v

Leaving Gemini we enter the sign of Cancer. Having mastered, to some extent, the fact of our earthly existence (Aries and Taurus) and the use of language (Gemini), in Cancer we look around and notice that the world of our family is surrounded by a larger world that includes other families. Once upon a time Cancer was the sign of the extended family or the tribe. Nowadays the nuclear family with its neurotic challenges falls a bit flat. Cancer is often symbolized by the crab but a better symbol for it is the bee hive: a productive organization of individuals which centres on a queen; a Great Mother.

b

Leaving the safety and security of our people in Cancer we enter the sign of Leo; a fiery sign that requires us to take risk. Here for the first time since we were born we have a sense of being on our own. At this stage of development we want people to love us, to see us, to applaud our risks just because we tried. Here is the sign of the king, the Great Father who is meant to help us have courage and to risk our identity for the sake of a creative possibility. Leo is a sign of passion and love; the kind that risks all. It is symbolized by the Lion: king of the beasts, which is self-explanatory.

28

As we leave the realm of self-expression we come to the sign of Virgo. Here, in the sign of adolescence, we are asked to integrate the various aspects of our childhood. For the second time in our lives we intensely experience our bodies. This time they are morphing even as we walk down the street. Transition is key and containment is necessary. If the body is a sacred vessel Virgo is fine. If the body is reviled and denigrated Virgo carries that suffering more intensely than any other sign. Here we are not precious but we are sensitive. Virgo’s symbol is the Virgin who represents wholeness not chastity.

m

Having achieved some sense of embodied wholeness we come to Libra. Now we are ready for relationships. We make commitments and sign contracts. We debate issues and stand up for justice. We seek harmony through challenge which is Libra’s irony; it fights for peace. Libra is symbolized by the scales. It is the only sign that is represented by a human-made object indicating a supposed high degree of civilized awareness. The rules by which we, as a species, wage war belong to this sign. The notion that we can rationally organize our violent impulses (possibly Libra’s reaction to its opposing sign Aries) is not working so well from what we can see. We will continue to negotiate.

X

From Libra’s lofty heights we descend into the watery guts of life: Scorpio. We are aware of others through our feelings. We are aware of what they bring to the table on inner and outer levels. We sense that all life is about interdependence. Without self-awareness we feel fated because things seem to happen to us. Or we seek to transform our sense of powerlessness through initiation. To do this we require large quantities of trust – not of others but of ourselves.

C

29

The Cosmic Mirror

Scorpio is symbolized by the scorpion, snake and eagle or phoenix. Each of us decides which level we are at: instinctive self-defense, transformation or penetrating insight. Generally we partake of all three in a complex, rich and mysterious combination. Having survived the intensity of transformation we are ready to have vision which is where Sagittarius comes in. At one extreme we have the passionate visionary. At the other extreme we have the opinionated fundamentalist. In this sign wisdom faces off with fanaticism. In seeking to find truth we create religion. When religion combines with dogma we endanger the entire planet. Endemic to Sagittarius is the desire to be right and righteous. Developmentally this sign is where we become aware of other cultures and how people do things differently. Tolerance and a willingness to learn from others and/or nature brings out the best.

V

Should we become overly exuberant and righteous, Capricorn follows with a correction. In this stage of development we realize that for an individual to be successful the surrounding community must be successful as well. You might wonder how this applies to the world we live in at the moment. Once upon a time Capricorn was clear about its purpose: the right use of resources. Over thousands of years, as dominator mentality prevailed, Capricorn became warped until it has come to represent corporate culture which is generally driven by greed and the desire to sustain only itself. We are challenged globally to set this straight.

Next we find the airy sign of Aquarius which in its own unique way strives to understand all that has been experienced thus far in the cycle. Here we find idealism and the archives of human knowledge. Aquarius often uses creative means which it borrows from its opposite sign, Leo, to structure and create blueprints for the possible human. It strives to realize the ideal. This wonderful trait is compromised when idealism is so high that the shadowy, unfathomable side of human nature is not factored into the various Aquarian theories about life. A wise architect knows that the best buildings are the ones built for actual human use. Every Aquarian is a bit of an architect.

N

Finally, in this spiral dance of life, we come to Pisces; the end and the beginning of it all. Here the unfathomable depths dominate and we are asked to believe in what we cannot see, to listen to the still, small voice. If we are unable to deal with the vast reaches of inner space we can come into unpleasant contact with mass institutions like hospitals or jails, or simply with the tyranny of our own overpowering feelings. If we are able to swim from time to time in these depths, through our dreams or feelings, we know that all life is one giant, primordial soup and we are simply some of the ingredients. From these fleeting insights come mystics, poets, musicians and seers.

Moon Void-of-course

The Last Aspect the Moon Makes

The Moon journeys through each sign of the zodiac every month. As she does she aspects (connects) with some of the planets. When she has finished making the last aspect in any given sign of the zodiac and before she enters the next sign, we say she is void-of-course (without direction).

As the Moon moves quickly through the sky around the Earth, the aspects she makes are fleeting. In this calendar we have only noted the last one she makes as she goes void-of-course.

Because the Moon is the heavenly body that carries the mood of the day, when she is void-of-course (v/c) and not connecting to any of the other planets the mood of the day may become aimless, disjointed, and/or uncomfortable. Although this can feel awkward in our day-to-day functions, it can be a great time for tuning in to ourselves. We are well advised to centre from within.

If you are making a decision or attempting to direct your activities, then the period when the Moon is in a particular sign can indicate the probable outcome. The last aspect the Moon makes before going void-of-course is like a pronouncement on the events of the moment. We think this is the most valuable information and therefore have offered it to you.

Moon Phases In almost all calendars you will find two phases of the moon: the waxing from new to full and the waning from full to new. In calendars of a more celestial bent you will find four phases: two waxing and two waning. In this calendar we have included all eight phases of the moon. Each month is like a little year and each year has two solstices, two equinoxes and four ‘cross-quarter’ points which fall exactly between the solstices and equinoxes. These points are determined by the journey of the Sun through the zodiac. There are eight phases of the year (see The Wheel of the Year on page 36). A month is determined by the cycle of the moon which takes approximately 29 days to journey through the zodiac. Those of us who are guided by the heavens; who experience the as above and the so below, are given to the notion that we can correspond one thing to another. Hence the eight phases of the moon each month reflect the eight phases of the year. Here is a guide for of each of the moon phases. New: Intentions and beginnings are the focus. The challenge is to be present in the moment; spontaneous and alive.

0

Crescent: Working hard with enthusiasm so as to nurture the seed of your intentions is called for at this phase. The challenge is to work hard at something for the sake of doing it rather than to achieve the final goal. We are called to follow our impulse for participation wherever it may lead.

D

33

The Cosmic Mirror

First quarter: At this phase we are meant to question authority; our own as well as external. The challenge is to strengthen the will, to be passionate, to find strength in defeat and to be willing to sail into the wind of conflict if necessary.

G J

Gibbous: Vigorous growth is happening everywhere. Weed out what you do not want. Cultivate what you do want. The challenge is to be faithful to your personal destiny; to discover, organize and express your inner truth.

M

Full: See yourself in everything and everyone you meet as well as the reverse. Celebrate just because you are alive. The challenge is to cultivate the awareness that all life is reflection; to overcome disillusionment even while maintaining connection. Idealism is best when strong enough to include the moments of disillusionment.

Q

Disseminating: Share your best thoughts, teach those who can learn from you. The point of a harvest is that all may eat. The challenge is to master life with the intellect; to share your ideas with dramatic conviction and creative delivery.

hird quarter: Think collectively. Work for solutions that T Tbenefit the group not only the individual. Make use of

people and situations that support the good of all. The challenge is to take responsibility and make a difference using the status-quo.

W

Balsamic: Let go and let Creation show you its mystery. Turn inward and see. Action is not helpful at this time; reflection is. The challenge is to accept life as it is. Pay attention to penetrating insights and make the most of each moment. Let awareness of death intensify life.

The Wheel of the Year

**All times are EST/EDT and zodiac signs/degrees for the northern hemisphere.

Long ago time was measured by the movement of heavenly bodies; the slow sweep of stars across the night sky and the waxing and waning of the moon. The passing of time was seen as cyclical and the seasons were the measure of the turning of the Wheel of the Year. The Wheel mirrors the progression of human birth, life, death and rebirth and the progression of the earth’s seasons. It is marked by eight festivals, sometimes called Sabbats. On these days we can honour and utilize the inherent wisdom of the planet. Each year the Sabbats bring a consistent message; the world turns. An amazing thing happened last night while you were asleep: the Earth turned, the Wheel turned. Imbolc Imbolc falls when the Sun is 15’ of Aquarius but is marked in the northern hemisphere on Feb. 2. It is also known as Candlemas and Ground Hog’s Day.

HINT for 2011

We are evolving from seeds and are sensing the world around us. If you are troubled by world events you may want to plant a seed in hope for creative solutions to come to those in power.

At Imbolc we draw on the magic of the quickening seed hidden deep beneath the frozen earth. This magic is the force of growth and change. Particularly in times of fear and despair we need to reach into the frozen depths of our being and bring forth the faith that spurs conscious actions. We must tap into the magic of compassion – the force that protects, nurtures, and heals the fragile seed in all of us. We cannot undo what has been done but we can plant seeds of compassion for ourselves and others, and bring forth a glimmer of hope in our breast.

Vernal Equinox The Vernal (from the Latin for spring) Equinox (from the Latin for equal night) occurs at the precise moment when the Sun crosses the celestial equator. In 2011, this occurs on March 20 at 7:21 pm. The length of day and night are equal.

HINT for 2011

How do we partner with mundane and divine realities? We are required to have clarity of thought to understand the cosmic pattern and to be part of the energetic solution.

This Sabbat is often confused with ideas of all things being equal and of balance. The irony is that we live with, and perpetuate, so much inequity through our choices of lifestyle and relationships. When it seems that the whole world is out of alignment it can be challenging to focus on balance. The true significance of the Vernal Equinox is the arrival of spring; the Earth thrusting forth with new life. We understand that life continues; that little seeds grow and the sun shines. Also known as Harvest-tide, the Autumn Equinox is the second of the harvest festivals. It is a ritual of thanksgiving for the fruits of the earth, and recognition of the need to share them in order to secure the blessings of the Goddess and the God during the bleak winter months. The Equinox reminds us that power needs to be balanced with connection. We achieve balance in our lives when we work with the understanding that cooperation is the true source of power. Insights for 2011 Astrologers have made much of Saturn, Uranus, Jupiter and Pluto as these planets moved into the early degrees of cardinal signs in 2010. This theme of crises and change continues into 2011. Each year the Sun is in the early degrees of cardinal signs at the beginning of each season. All these beginnings are associated with breakthrough, crises and challenge. So many planets inhabiting these same degrees suggest that we are at the threshold of a new era for our planet. This began with Pluto in 2008 when it entered Capricorn, continued when Saturn entered Libra during the fall of 2009, and was intensified when Jupiter and Uranus entered Aries in the summer of 2010. The lunar eclipse on June 26, 2010, in the early degrees of Capricorn, and Mars transiting the early degrees of Libra from July 29th – August 7, 2010, stirred up the same thing. HINT Looking back to 2010 can help us gain a greater sense of the first three and a half months of 2011. Things have changed both personally and collectively in the world since this cardinal adventure began in 2008. Our thinking about the world is deeply affected by economic uncertainty, unnatural disasters such as the Gulf oil spill and climate changes that have brought flood and fire. * Trigger dates for this cardinal theme in 2011 are: January 4, February 25, March 9, March 28, and April 2 – 13th.

During these times of change and possible crises it is best not to hide your head in the sands of denial. The initiative you take now will direct your life for many years to come. Understanding the difference between aggression, on one hand, and speaking truth to power, on the other, is important. Diversity, individuality and our uniqueness as humans protect us against the dangers of monoculture. Holding on to our uniqueness even as we allow for the unique qualities of others strengthens us. Nature thrives on diversity. Totalitarianism flourishes when people lose their sense of personal significance about their lives.

The Cosmic Mirror

It appears that shift is and will continue happening in an unmistakable way from January through April of 2011. Later in the year, from August 7 – 27, Mars will enter the cardinal cross stirring up the early degrees of the cardinal signs one more time. There will be more to come in 2012. The next significant shift occurs on April 4th when Neptune enters Pisces for the first time in 148 years. (The last time was 1848, just after it was discovered.) Although Jupiter is the ancient ruler of Pisces, Neptune is also associated with this sign. Keywords for Neptune in Pisces might be: water, movies (projection), music, fashion, spirituality, compassion, hospitals, prisons, the collective unconscious, and trends. Neptune in Pisces conjures images of the sea. The mystery and the danger that the sea holds inspires us to think in mythological terms. We are also aware of things such as disappearing species of fish, toxicity in the waters, the slaughter of dolphins and the necessity for a new relationship of human beings to sea beings. Neptune in Pisces will focus our awareness on all things water. But this is not all. Anytime that Neptune changes signs, we can look for significant new trends in fashion, movies, music and spirituality, and the way we deal with hospitals, public health care and prisons. HINT

You can tell Neptune is touching you personally if you have the feeling of being swept away.

2011 Astrology Guide

Neptune will only be in Pisces from April 4th until August 5th. At that time it will retrograde into Aquarius where it has been since the end of 1998 and will not re-enter Pisces until 2012 where it will stay until April of 2025.

Jupiter enters Taurus on June 4th. Soon after, Jupiter will make a sextile to Neptune. This seems to be something of a friendly and supportive nod to Neptune in Pisces. Since Jupiter is the ancient ruler of Pisces, perhaps this will encourage the notion of practical or common sense compassion. Jupiter spends about one year in each sign. Jupiter will make a trine to Pluto on July 7th. With this major aspect, we could imagine that a person or persons will begin to emerge on the world scene who could actually contribute a practical, value-centred plan for managing the current crises on our planet. It is a lot to hope for. There is an election brewing in the U.S. which breeds a kind of cynicism regarding the promises that people, especially politicians, make. We will have time to decide exactly whose values make most sense as this aspect will occur on October 28th and again in 2012.

Eclipses Every year there are a number of solar and lunar eclipses. (A solar eclipse occurs at a new moon when the Sun and Moon are conjunct. A lunar eclipse occurs at a full moon when the Sun and Moon are opposite each other.) They actually regress through the zodiac and take approximately one year to move through a sign. They occur in sets that are roughly six months apart. 2011 starts with a solar eclipse in Capricorn on January 4th triggering something similar to the events of the summer of 2010 and January – April of 2011. (See ‘Insights’). The next solar eclipse is June 1st when the Sun and Moon will conjunct in the sign of Gemini. On June 15th there is a lunar eclipse with the Sun in Gemini and the Moon in Sagittarius.

The Cosmic Mirror

The shift from eclipses in Cancer/Capricorn to ones in Gemini/ Sagittarius indicates a change in our focus from resources and the management of them: food and weather for example, to communication and vision. This suggests that the next step in our journey will require great intelligence and ethical awareness. The last solar eclipse in Cancer is on July 1 (the first was on July 7, 2009). In 2012 we will have more Gemini / Sagittarius eclipses. Eclipse dates for 2011: Solar January 4 Solar June 1 Lunar June 15 Solar July 1 Solar November 25 Lunar December 10

HINT

All eclipses suggest anxiety, issues or unexpected alterations. In Gemini/ Sagittarius the challenges will occur in the realm of communication, education and the management or mismanagement of culture via the media. We are advised to make sure that the information which drives our actions is true, to challenge what the media feeds us, to think for ourselves in intelligent and ethical ways and to avoid quick fixes and the ‘holy war’.

HINT

Do not let a little bit of information about the fact that Mercury is retrograde keep you from living your life. It is always a challenge to outwit the trickster so don’t try. Better to laugh at life’s ironies and go with the flow.

The Cosmic Mirror Astrology Guide

Astrology helps us to frame our sense of what is happening, what has happened and what might happen. In The Cosmic Mirror we offer you perspectives from astrology and traditional earth-based practices. The Wheel of the Year turns in the heavens and on earth; we say “as above, so below. This calendar offers some insight into what the planetary influences for the year symbolize. This is not the same as predicting what will happen. Astrology is like a cosmic mirror in that it reflects our reality down here on Earth.
