The Cosmic Mirror
Introduction Astrology helps us to frame our sense of what is happening, what has happened and what might happen. None of us, as individuals, creates the collective reality. Yet each of us decides how we meet it. In this calendar we offer some insight into what the planetary influences for the year symbolize. This is not the same as predicting what will happen. Astrology is like a cosmic mirror in that it reflects our reality down here on Earth. We all know that we cannot blame the mirror for the way things look but we can learn a lot in the looking. Although the actual date of an astrological event is significant, what is more interesting is the collective theme it suggests. In The Cosmic Mirror we offer you perspectives from astrology and traditional earth-based practices. The Wheel of the Year turns in the heavens and on earth; we say “as above, so below”. Enjoy this tool to navigate the year to come. – Julie and Deirdre 2012 Astrology Guide

Insights for 2012 The 2012 phenomenon The 2012 phenomenon comprises a range of beliefs that cataclysmic or transformative events will occur on December 21, 2012. This date is regarded as the end-date of a 5,125-year-long cycle in the Mayan calendar. Many may be afraid that the 2012 date marks the end of the world or some similar catastrophic event. Others have suggested that the 2012 date marks a transition from one phase of human evolution into another, more spiritually based phase; that 2012 marks the beginning of a new and more positive era for humans. Mayan scholars do not adhere to the apocalyptic view of 2012 and neither do we. One way to look at December 21st 2012 is that on this solstice day (the beginning of the New Year) at the time of sunrise (the beginning of the new day) the Sun (the Great Father) will conjunct the centre of the Milky Way (the Great Goddess). This Galactic centre is the womb of our galaxy. The symbolism is obvious. It represents a great joining of masculine and feminine energies which is sorely needed on our planet. This Great Marriage won’t happen again for another 25,765 years. January 2012: Small things matter. A little corn and some beans can make all the difference. Kindness makes even the most difficult situations easier. We aspire to greatness and must apply effort and practice to anything we want to achieve. Stay grounded on the 9th. Be willing to make the hero’s descent from the 23rd. February 2012: Water – everything about it is important; the rivers, the ocean, the ice caps and the blood in our veins. Water is also feelings. Not our emotions but the deep knowledge we have in our guts. It connects us. From the 4th and for many years to come we will pay attention to water. It will be the fashion. 3
The Cosmic Mirror
March 2012: Is there such a thing as free will? Do we choose our actions or are we relentlessly constrained by circumstance and habit? Till the 7th break the chains of habit and circumstance. Move in and out of action and reflection from the 12th. From the 13th – 15th all is well if commitment to simple values is strong. Break through fear on the 25th. April 2012: If you’ve been on the hero’s quest now is the time to bring the fruits of your labour to your world. This life is not just about where we are going it’s more about how we get there. All the good things we enjoy were made by someone. Speak your feelings from the 4th and let your arrow fly on the 14th. May 2012: Descend below the chatter, news and gossip to the place where thought originates. Life is a riddle and this month belongs to the Mother of All Riddles. Grasping will avail you not! Begin to let go of old ways of thinking on the 5th. It will take some time. From the 16th – 19th, do the right thing with ease, resolve and strength. June 2012: Hear the clash of symbols (pun intended) as the cracks in our world split open to reveal the world we want to create. Consider the good that has come from dashed hopes, unexpected losses. Armed with this knowledge the way forward is more adventure than tragic end-of-the-world story. Stay aware around the 24th. July 2012: From the 3rd be aware that peace, in a world on the edge, arises when we are peaceful which is different than simply avoiding conflict. We are all about the words and actions of peace. Think before you speak and look for every opportunity to invent change without creating chaos; especially from the 14th – 23rd.
2012 Astrology Guide

August 2012: Move forward with creative projects from the 8th. Security comes at a price from the 15th – 19th. At mid month someone must take responsibility for what has been promised and agreed upon. From the 23rd things get really real. Stay tuned to the gut reaction. It reads truth even if it can’t always figure out what to do with it. September 2012: Freedom is bound to assert itself eventually in reaction to oppression. It is a basic human right. This is not the same as privilege which is not a human right at all. Consider the difference around the 19th. Summer ends and the harvest approaches. What will you store for the winter to come? October 2012: When we accept that we are all relatives - that each of us is a vital part of the whole –we begin to grow up. This is not passive acceptance but rather awareness of feelings leading to forceful actions which can break through stagnation. Revolution based on revelation breaks like a wave this month. Be kind. November 2012: Unexpected, repressed feelings explode and make messes. Around mid month count to ten often. The rewards will be great. From the 22nd – 30th radical change confronts fear and the desperate need to control. As it is in the world it is also for each of us. Discipline not punishment could save the day. December 2012: We are coming to a crossroad as we approach the promised end and beginning; a new day, a new year and a new eon. At this threshold we choose between speaking truth or lies. What truth must you encounter to use power correctly and for the good of all?

The Twelve Great Myths or Signs of the Zodiac "I will look on the stars and look on thee, and read the page of thy destiny." ~ Letitia Elizabeth Landon
One way to see the twelve signs of the Zodiac is as twelve great stories that describe our journey as humans from beginning to end. It is likely that the development of each individual - the story of a life so to say – is a reflection of the development of the human race as a whole. By understanding the one we can learn more about the other.
x
The journey begins with Aries, the sign of birth and beginnings. For most of us, we arrive here head first and spent with the effort of labour. Here we find the pioneering spirit and the intense need to identify oneself as separate and unique. Any birth requires a tremendous effort on the part of the individual. Aries is symbolized by the ram but it can also be a lamb. Some Aries are bold risk takers and others are shy and overly cautious. In any case, Aries represents the need we all have for a healthy sense of individuality. From Aries we move into Taurus, the sign of earthly embodiment. Having been born we are ready to explore the world with our senses. We move toward things that are pleasurable to our senses and away from things that smell, taste, feel, look or sound bad. From this instinctive reaction to life we develop values. Taurus is symbolized by the bull. On one hand Taurus represents the inclination to simply enjoy the wonders of the natural world. On the other hand the bull may see red and feel rage when enjoyment is frustrated.

As we leave Taurus we enter Gemini, the airy sign of mental activity. Here is the so-called nursery; our siblings; the learning of language; our early education. In Gemini we are curious and want to learn everything indiscriminately. Faster than the speed of light is the energy of thought which can take us from happiness to misery in an instant. Gemini is symbolized by the twins; one up, one down. They trick themselves and the rest of us endlessly. We cannot tell which is which and we cannot be sure what trick they will play on us next. The trickster, of course, is the mind itself.
b
Leaving Gemini we enter the sign of Cancer. Having mastered, to some extent, the fact of our earthly existence (Aries and Taurus) and the use of language (Gemini), in Cancer we look around and notice that the world of our family is surrounded by a larger world that includes other families. Once upon a time Cancer was the sign of the extended family or the tribe. Nowadays the nuclear family with its neurotic challenges falls a bit flat. Cancer is often symbolized by the crab but a better symbol for it is the bee hive: a productive organization of individuals which centres on a queen; a Great Mother. Leaving the safety and security of our people in Cancer we enter the sign of Leo; a fiery sign that requires us to take risk. Here for the first time since we were born we have a sense of being on our own. At this stage of development we want people to love us, to see us, to applaud our risks just because we tried. Here is the sign of the king, the Great Father who is meant to help us have courage and to risk our identity for the sake of a creative possibility. Leo is a sign of passion and love; the kind that risks all. It is symbolized by the Lion: king of the beasts which is self-explanatory.

As we leave the realm of self-expression we come to the sign of Virgo. Here, in the sign of adolescence, we are asked to integrate the various aspects of our childhood. For the second time in our lives we intensely experience our bodies. This time they are morphing even as we walk down the street. Transition is key and containment is necessary. If the body is a sacred vessel Virgo is fine. If the body is reviled and denigrated Virgo carries that suffering more intensely than any other sign. Here we are not precious but we are sensitive. Virgo’s symbol is the Virgin who represents wholeness not chastity.
X
Having achieved some sense of embodied wholeness we come to Libra. Now we are ready for relationships. We make commitments and sign contracts. We debate issues and stand up for justice. We seek harmony through challenge which is Libra’s irony; it fights for peace. Libra is symbolized by the scales. It is the only sign that is represented by a human-made object indicating a supposed high degree of civilized awareness. The rules by which we, as a species, wage war belong to this sign. The notion that we can rationally organize our violent impulses (possibly Libra’s reaction to its opposing sign Aries) is not working so well from what we can see. We will continue to negotiate. From Libra’s lofty heights we descend into the watery guts of life: Scorpio. We are aware of others through our feelings. We are aware of what they bring to the table on inner and outer levels. We sense that all life is about interdependence. Without self-awareness we feel fated because things seem to happen to us. Or we seek to transform our sense of powerlessness through initiation. To do this we require large quantities of trust – not of others but of ourselves. Scorpio is symbolized by the scorpion, snake and eagle or phoenix. Each of us decides which level we are at: instinctive self-defense, transformation or penetrating insight. Generally we partake of all three in a complex, rich and mysterious combination.

Having survived the intensity of transformation we are ready to have vision which is where Sagittarius comes in. At one extreme we have the passionate visionary. At the other extreme we have the opinionated fundamentalist. In this sign wisdom faces off with fanaticism. In seeking to find truth we create religion. When religion combines with dogma we endanger the entire planet. Endemic to Sagittarius is the desire to be right and righteous. Developmentally this sign is where we become aware of other cultures and how people do things differently. Tolerance and a willingness to learn from others and/or nature brings out the best.
B
Should we become overly exuberant and righteous, Capricorn follows with a correction. In this stage of development we realize that for an individual to be successful the surrounding community must be successful as well. You might wonder how this applies to the world we live in at the moment. Once upon a time Capricorn was clear about its purpose: the right use of resources. Over thousands of years as dominator mentality prevailed, Capricorn became warped until it came to represent corporate culture which is generally driven by greed and the desire to sustain only itself. We are challenged globally to set this straight.
N
Next we find the airy sign of Aquarius which in its own unique way strives to understand all that has been experienced thus far in the cycle. Here we find idealism and the archives of human knowledge. Aquarius often uses creative means which it borrows from its opposite sign, Leo, to structure and create blueprints for the possible human. It strives to realize the ideal. This wonderful trait is compromised when idealism is so high that the shadowy, unfathomable side of human nature is not factored into the various Aquarian theories about life. A wise architect knows that the best buildings are the ones built for actual human use. Every Aquarian is a bit of an architect. 9
The Cosmic Mirror
M
Finally, in this spiral dance of life, we come to Pisces the end and the beginning of it all. Here the unfathomable depths dominate and we are asked to believe in what we cannot see, to listen to the still, small voice. If we are unable to deal with the vast reaches of inner space we can come into unpleasant contact with mass institutions like hospitals or jails, or simply with the tyranny of our own overpowering feelings. If we are able to swim from time to time in these depths, through our dreams or feelings, we know that all life is one giant, primordial soup and we are simply some of the ingredients. From these fleeting insights come mystics, poets, musicians and seers.
Key to the Heavens "Now, now, you stars that move in your right spheres. Where be your powers?" ~ William Shakespeare
The Sun, Moon and planets are the heavenly bodies of our solar system that move across the background of the stars of the zodiac which appear to remain fixed in relationship to the planets. The word planet derives its meaning from the notion of wandering stars. Because the planets wander through the zodiac, the ancients saw them as gods and goddesses who acted through us in different ways. Modern astrologers see the planets as representing drives in the human psyche which are expressed through the different zodiac signs within the domains of the astrological houses. Each planet may be seen as a person or persons in your life. Here are some keys to help you unlock the meanings of these heavenly wanderers.

The Luminaries The Sun and Moon are called luminaries. They are not planets but they act like planets from an astrological point of view, i.e. how they affect us through our astrological charts. The Sun: our heart’s desire. (father) The Sun lights up the day. The Sun in your chart represents the fire which connects you to the universal spirit of all things. The Sun is the centre of our solar system around which all the planets revolve and so it isn’t a stretch to understand that astrologically the Sun represents conscious self-expression, health and vitality, pride, and our heart’s desire. Ancient astrologers made much of the difference between being born during the day or the night. In the absence of the Sun we see many things that are not visible by the light of day. The Sun is the planetary ruler of the zodiac sign Leo. The Moon: our emotional compass. (mother) The Moon is the nocturnal light in the heavens. Her light is cyclical as she waxes and wanes above us. The astrological Moon represents that which gives us comfort as well as our emotional fluctuations. Whether we admit it or not, the Moon is what we would like other people to do for us. The Moon is also associated with our unconscious habits, memories, the urge to nurture, our relationship to our mother, and the past. The power of the Moon is hidden and mysterious and often manifests in subconscious ways. The Moon orbits the earth every 29.5 days. The Moon is the planetary ruler of the zodiac sign Cancer.

The Visible Planets
The visible planets can be seen in the night sky by the naked eye. These planets, sometimes called the personal planets, pertain to areas of life that all individuals must attend to. Mercury: Our mental state, how we communicate. (siblings, neighbours) As the symbol for the mind, Mercury is more aligned with the neuronal connections that science speaks of rather than the specific location of the brain. Mercury represents the mercurial nature of the mind; it’s ability to flit from one thing to another faster than the blink of an eye. In your chart it indicates what you like to think and talk about. Mercury takes 88 days to orbit the Sun, spending approximately 7.33 days in each sign of the zodiac. Mercury is the planetary ruler of Gemini and Virgo. Venus: Our desire for pleasure, the basis for our values. (girls and women) Many people consider astrological Venus to be synonymous with Aphrodite. Actually, Venus has two manifestations: She is the Morning Star (Lucifer, light bringer which can only be seen in the east) or the Evening Star (Hesperus, meaning western which can only be seen in the west.) Venus Hesperus is undoubtedly the most beautiful of celestial visions. She is associated with the sensual side of her nature. Venus Lucifer is more aligned with the notion of what it actually takes to make a relationship work; the ability to negotiate as well as to fight for what is yours. Venus orbits the Sun in 225 days, spending about 18.75 days in each sign of the zodiac.Venus is the planetary ruler of Taurus and Libra.

12
Mars: Our desire for separation. (boys and men) Mars represents the fiery masculine aspect and, like Venus, has two sides. On one hand Mars represents the warrior; the bully, the aggressor. On the other hand, Mars has a strategic side which is disciplined and more responsive than reactive. In this guise it still speaks of how we assert ourselves but considers what the outcome of certain actions might be and therefore tends to be more strategic than impulsive. We only see this side of Mars every 2.5 years when it goes retrograde. Mars orbits the Sun in 687 days, spending approximately 57.25 days in each sign of the zodiac. Mars is the planetary ruler of Aries and the ancient ruler of Scorpio. Jupiter: Our beliefs. (teacher, preacher, judge) In our solar system Jupiter is the largest planet; a gas giant with intense storms. In mythology, he is the king of the gods. As such Jupiter is associated with the principles of growth, expansion, prosperity, and good fortune. Jupiter also governs foreign travel, higher education, religion, and the law. Jupiter encourages us to expand our minds. Since everything about Jupiter is larger than life so too is it’s shadow side. Although Jupiter can be benevolent and forgiving, it can also be a harsh judge and a deeply rejecting principle. Jupiter takes 11.9 years to orbit the Sun, spending 361 days in each sign of the zodiac. Jupiter is the planetary ruler of the sign Sagittarius and the ancient ruler of Pisces. Saturn: Our limits. (authority figures) As the last planet visible by the naked eye, Saturn is the gatekeeper to what lies beyond. It asks us to work hard, be reliable and encounter our limitations and to succeed through effort. Saturn teaches us respect for power and loves a hierarchy yet there can be a lack of compassion and too much practicality which can lead to a dour and miserly approach. Saturn takes 29.5 years to orbit the Sun which brings the much touted Saturn Return in our natal charts. It spends about 2.46 years in each sign of the zodiac. Saturn is the planetary ruler of Capricorn and the ancient ruler of Aquarius. 13

Non-Visible Planets
The planets that are invisible to the naked eye (can only be seen with the aid of a telescope) are called the transpersonal planets. They represent energies that sweep through the collective. The gifts of the outer planets are intended to take us all to new levels. Uranus was discovered in 1781, Neptune in 1846 and Pluto in 1930. Uranus: Revolutionaries, eccentrics, idealists. Everything about Uranus is about being revolutionary, being different – sometimes innovative and inventive- and about challenging the status quo. Uranus, the planet of sudden and unexpected change, is associated with individuality and new and unconventional ideas. Uranus governs freedom and radical (sometimes unwanted) ideas. If we listen to our Uranian voice we can affect great change for the good. If we listen to that same voice without self-awareness we can use rebelliousness to run away from our true ideals and path. Uranus takes 84 years to orbit the Sun, spending about seven years in each sign of the zodiac. Uranus is the planetary ruler of Aquarius. Neptune: D reamers, con-artists, artists of all stripes, soul makers, soul stealers. Neptune, or Poseidon, is the god of the sea and as such rules the unconscious of our human psyche which is often symbolized by deep water. With Neptune we long for a pure state of being; a chance to redeem or be redeemed. Neptune represents the ideal that we dream of; our spiritual and or artistic self dwells here. The search for the ideal can lead us to the daydream where we can lose ourselves in addiction, self-deception and projection. The choice becomes to either escape the world or to better the condition of those around us through spiritual connection. Neptune takes 165 years to orbit the Sun, spending approximately 14 years in each sign of the zodiac. Neptune is the planetary ruler of the zodiac sign Pisces. 2012 Astrology Guide
14
Pluto: Shamans, power brokers, transformers. The last known planet of the solar system is Pluto. Regardless of recent controversy Pluto is a planet from an astrological perspective. A tiny planet with immense power for change, Pluto shows us the simple and inevitable truth that loss brings gain; that change and even suffering offer the possibility for personal evolution. Like the mythic god for which it is named, Pluto symbolizes the journey we all take at one time or another into the dark of the underworld where we are irrevocably changed. Pluto takes 248 years to orbit the Sun, spending approximately 21 years in each sign of the zodiac. However, Pluto’s orbit is so eccentric that this can vary dramatically. Because of the length of time Pluto takes to orbit the Sun an entire generation will share the same sign in which Pluto enters their charts. Pluto is the modern planetary ruler of the zodiac sign of Scorpio.

Moon Void-of-course
The Last Aspect the Moon Makes
The Moon journeys through each sign of the zodiac every month. As she does she aspects (connects) with some of the planets. When she has finished making the last aspect in any given sign of the zodiac and before she enters the next sign, we say she is void-of-course (without direction). Because the Moon is the heavenly body that carries the mood of the day, when she is void-of-course (v/c) and not connecting to any of the other planets the mood of the day may become aimless, disjointed, and/or uncomfortable. Although this can feel awkward in our day-to-day functions, it can be a great time for tuning in to ourselves. We are well advised to centre from within.
As the Moon moves quickly through the sky around the Earth, the aspects she makes are fleeting. In this calendar we have only noted the last one she makes as she goes void-of-course.
The Moon void-of-course can last for moments or for days and depends on the planets and their movements. It is always good to know what the Moon is doing so that we can alter our actions accordingly. 2012 Astrology Guide
If you are making a decision or attempting to direct your activities, then the period when the Moon is in a particular sign can indicate the probable outcome. The last aspect the Moon makes before going void-of-course is like a pronouncement on the events of the moment. We think this is the most valuable information and therefore have offered it to you.

Moon Phases In this calendar we have included all eight phases of the moon. Each month is like a little year and each year has two solstices, two equinoxes and four ‘cross-quarter’ points which fall exactly between the solstices and equinoxes. These points are determined by the journey of the Sun through the zodiac. There are eight phases of the year (see The Wheel of the Year on page 23). A month is determined by the cycle of the moon which takes approximately 29 days to journey through the zodiac. Those of us who are guided by the heavens; who experience the as above and the so below, are given to the notion that we can correspond one thing to another. Hence the eight phases of the moon each month reflect the eight phases of the year. The energy of the different moon phases allows us to add new dimensions to our decisions and actions. Here is a guide for of each of the moon phases. New: Intentions and beginnings are the focus. The challenge is to be present in the moment; spontaneous and alive
0
Crescent: Working hard with enthusiasm so as to nurture the seed of your intentions is called for at this phase. The challenge is to work hard at something for the sake of doing it rather than to achieve the final goal. We are called to follow our impulse for participation wherever it may lead.
D
First quarter: At this phase we are meant to question authority; our own as well as external. The challenge is to strengthen the will, to be passionate, to find strength in defeat and to be willing to sail into the wind of conflict if necessary.

Gibbous: Vigorous growth is happening everywhere. Weed out what you do not want. Cultivate what you do want. The challenge is to be faithful to your personal destiny; to discover, organize and express your inner truth.

Full: See yourself in everything and everyone you meet as well as the reverse. Celebrate just because you are alive. The challenge is to cultivate the awareness that all life is reflection; to overcome disillusionment even while maintaining connection. Idealism is best when strong enough to include the moments of disillusionment. Disseminating: Share your best thoughts, teach those who can learn from you. The point of a harvest is that all may eat. The challenge is to master life with the intellect; to share your ideas with dramatic conviction and creative delivery.
Q T
LAST quarter: Think collectively. Work for solutions that benefit the group not only the individual. Make use of people and situations that support the good of all. The challenge is to take responsibility and make a difference using the status-quo. Balsamic: Let go and let Creation show you its mystery. Turn inward and see. Action is not helpful at this time; reflection is. The challenge is to accept life as it is. Pay attention to penetrating insights and make the most of each moment; let awareness of death intensify life.

Retrograde Motion "Do we make a hullabaloo among the stars, or do they make a hullabaloo down here?" ~ Mason Cooley
As the planets orbit the Sun they can appear to move backward in the sky from the perspective of the Earth. This is called retrograde motion. In actual fact the planets do not move backwards. Just as the Sun does not actually rise; the Earth turns. This illusionary concept is created by the orbital movement of the Earth, with relation to other planets in our solar system. Astrology is based on the appearance of things. If the degree of the planetary station (where this change of movement takes place) is connected to an astrological element of your chart, you may expect changes in the corresponding area of life. All of us are impacted in one way or another. The planet in retrograde will have impact on us according to the inclinations of the zodiac sign of the retrograde, the house (placement of planets in our natal chart) and also in a more general or global way. The meaning in a planetary retrograde is found in the symbolic interpretation of this apparent backward motion. It can help us to understand and navigate our world with greater ease. By aligning ourselves with the retrograde energy we can move through any retrograde period with a minimum of chaos and a deepening of our ability to act in ways that enhance the quality of our lives. We must be willing to have a sense of humour when the planets play with us.

Mercury Retrograde: Mercury goes retrograde about three times a year. It is common to hear people speak of this period with some anxiety. When Mercury is retrograde it is easy to miss the details; to misunderstand what was said or written; to get the dates wrong or to forget to show up at an appointment. The common advice is to refrain from signing contracts, making major commitments or undertaking major new endeavours. When Mercury is retrograde it is time to get your files in order, contact people from the past, find things, reflect, wonder and learn. If you’re willing to listen deeply and marvel at synchronicity when it shows up in your life, many good things can arise. (To learn more about Mercury Retrograde go to www.mercuryretrograde.ca.) Venus Retrograde: The symmetry and beauty of Venus was well known to the ancients who watched the sky. Her journey through the heavens was the source of inspiration for many great mythic dramas. When Venus is retrograde we are called to conduct a meaningful re-evaluation of our lives. Venus goes retrograde every 18 months. Approximately nine months before the retrograde period, Venus is the Evening Star. We see her in the western sky after the sun sets where She is the brightest object in the sky after the moon. For a period she disappears from the sky altogether and then reappears as the Morning Star. Transit of Venus: A Transit of Venus is a rare event. It occurs when Venus passes in direct line between the Sun and the Earth. A small portion of the Sun is shadowed by Venus from the perspective of Earth. This is similar to a solar eclipse but for the fact that Venus is further away from Earth than the Moon and cannot totally eclipse the Sun from Earth’s perspective. The Transits of Venus occur twice in eight years but only about every 100 plus years. The last Transit of Venus was June 8, 2004. Before that it occurred in 1874 and 1882. At that time the transits helped to calculate the distance between the Sun and the Earth.

The essential symbolic message of a Venus retrograde is found in the moment Venus conjuncts the Sun and in the zodiac sign in which this occurs. The Goddess (Venus) has descended into the underworld. She is invisible to us. She is in the bowels of transformation. Symbolically we think of the Transit of Venus as even more intense than a usual retrograde; a time when we must find the fierce compassion to let go of the old values so that we may be renewed. Since the Transits of Venus in our times are in Gemini the thing that needs transforming is our collective way of thinking. The media is an external manifestation of our mind and the noise inside our own heads is the more personal aspect. Don’t necessarily expect this Transit to be noticeable externally. It is a time for deep soul searching, the ramifications of which will not be known until after Venus goes direct. The Transit of Venus occurs at 9:05 pm on June 5, 2012. Mars retrograde Mars goes retrograde approximately every two and a half years. At this time Mars rises in the night sky as the Sun sets. Planets in opposition to the Sun are at their brightest as the Sun’s light illuminates them like a spotlight. At the time of the Mars/Sun opposition we see him – unmistakably red – as he journeys across the sky all night. Mars is the warrior and the Sun is the king. As Mars (the warrior) opposes the Sun (the King) he reflects back to us the impulse to ‘act out’ and our indomitable will to be victorious. Mars retrograde can also give rise to irrational action; fits of anger, and conflict in our relationships. When Mars is retrograde we are better off if we act strategically by making the effort to respond rather than to react. Retrograde Dates

The Wheel of the Year
**All times are EST/EDT and zodiac signs/degrees for the northern hemisphere.
Long ago time was measured by the movement of heavenly bodies; the slow sweep of stars across the night sky and the waxing and waning of the moon. The passing of time was seen as cyclical and the seasons were the measure of the turning of the Wheel of the Year. The Wheel mirrors the progression of human birth, life, death and rebirth and the progression of the earth’s seasons. It is marked by eight festivals, sometimes called Sabbats. On these days we can honour and utilize the inherent wisdom of the planet. Each year the Sabbats bring a consistent message; the world turns. An amazing thing happened last night while you were asleep: the Earth turned, the Wheel turned. Imbolc HINT for 2012 Imbolc falls when the Sun is 15’ of Every year we seed the coming Aquarius but is marked in the northern twelve months with our hopes hemisphere on Feb. 2. This magic is the force of growth and change. Particularly in times of fear and despair we need to reach into the frozen depths of our being and bring forth the faith that spurs conscious actions. We must tap into the magic of compassion – the force that protects, nurtures, and heals the fragile seed in all of us. We cannot undo what has been done but we can plant seeds of compassion for ourselves and others, and bring forth a glimmer of hope in our breast.

When it seems that the whole world is out of alignment it can be challenging to focus on balance. The true significance of the Vernal Equinox is the arrival of spring; the Earth thrusting forth with new life. We understand that life continues; that little seeds grow and the sun shines. The call of the Summer Solstice is a call to realize our potential, assume our power as individuals and determine what impact we are having on future generations. What is our legacy for our children and for the children to come? Is it too late? Do not ask that someone else make this future happen but rather know that you can create the future. Our souls as well as our bodies require sweet moments; light, luscious and colourful bites. In a time of great change and turmoil the seeds that we planted may not be the harvest we had hoped for. We are, however, reaping what we have sown; physically, emotionally and karmically. So, we must separate the chaff from the grain and understand the interconnectedness of both. We cannot prosper when the world around us fails. If we acknowledge our dependence upon the planet and the collective we will be free to prosper in more conscious ways.

Winter Solstice/Yule HINT for 2012 Why are we afraid of the dark? The The anxiety of 2012 has pulled darkness is filled with limitless possibility. you into the Dark but Lo!, the Light is reborn. The Winter Solstice, occurring on December 21 at 6:12 am, brings with it the promise of increasing light. The Light is the spark of creation that manifests from the dark recesses of our souls. This Light needs a container so that it does not fizzle out in the mud or rage across the world. Like mythic beings born into the Light Jesus, Mithros, Horus, you are that container.
The Turn of the Wheel One cycle over and a new one begins. As the Cosmos and the Earth turn we mirror this movement with our own internal cycles. We experience life, death and rebirth as a conscious shift in thoughts, feelings and actions connected to our true values. The lore of 2012 has pulled us in but now we move with the Wheel as it turns towards a new year and a new cycle.

The Cosmic Mirror Astrology Guide
Astrology helps us to frame our sense of what is happening, what has happened and what might happen. In The Cosmic Mirror we offer you perspectives from astrology and traditional earth-based practices. The Wheel of the Year turns in the heavens and on earth; we say “as above, so below. This calendar offers some insight into what the planetary influences for the year symbolize. This is not the same as predicting what will happen. Astrology is like a cosmic mirror in that it reflects our reality down here on Earth.
