November is here, not much we can do now accept start the battle with mother nature over staying warm for the winter. We turn the clocks back this weekend so we get the longest party night of the year! We also get our evenings reduced to darkness for the next 5 months which pretty much sucks the life out of you for the first couple weeks. Once the brain adjusts, it’s time to get your holiday season on so brace yourself people, Santa is soon coming to town. November marks our 37 Year Anniversary as a family business. It wasn’t easy for my parents raising 4 kids and starting a business but they pulled it off. Through years of hard work, late nights and dedication, Whitey and Robin did something amazing. They started the dream that has become a Central PA staple and one that I am very lucky to have the chance to continue. Some would call it a dream job and while I’m not rich by any means, I am very grateful to be able to get by and continue the dream that they started. I have some big shoes to fill and with the changing times I am always struggling to keep us relevant. I thank all the supporters who read and use the paper and hope we can continue the tradition for another 37 years. We had a sad moment in PA Musician Magazine history this month when Michele Kelley dropped the bomb and decided she needed to move on and focus on some new endeavors in life. It’s not easy doing this monthly writing gig and it takes a lot of time and dedication to make it happen month after month. The good news is, Chris Rider has decided to soldier on and will be continuing to snap awesome photos for us and now will be writing about them as well. So please take the time to read his first go at it. I think he did a great job and look forward to many more articles from him. If your band is looking for professional shots or have a show coming up you want to let him know about, just hit him up on facebook @chrisriderphotography. October flew by like a bat out of Halloween. I did get out and catch a couple of shows. We started off down in Hummelstown at The Warwick Hotel. I stopped by to drop off papers, eat some fine food and listen to some great local music. Ben Pierson was playing an acoustic set when we arrived so we ordered some drinks and food and took in some carbs and enjoyed the atmosphere. The Wick, if you’re not familiar, is a staple of Hummlestown and has been around since the 1790’s. Pretty impressive building if you’re into old wood working. Its amazing comparing what we build now days to what the people built years ago. A lot of pride went into the old buildings and the owners of The Wick have a lot of pride in what they are doing. One of the ways they are doing this is by hosting live music every Friday and Saturday. So flip on through to the cover story on page 13 and get the full scoop from Rachel Rocks. Also check out the ad on the next page and make plans to go catch some live music and enjoy the food. After we left The Wick we headed over to Blarney’s for what would become my last show ever at Wanda’s. Hard to believe that it’s going away but the memories will last a lifetime for many in the local 717. We got there late but caught a lot of action at the Rebel’s for a Cause Benefit. The benefit was for two people battling medical issues (Lisa Weaver and Rochelle Bair Schoffstall) and for one who sadly lost his battle, Scott Von Sprankle. From what I was told this was the first time Steel had played without Scott behind the controls on the sound board. I am glad to say that even though there was a somber tone people were not letting this get them down and the place was just packed wall to wall. We caught the last couple songs from As-

phalt Valentine who were rocking the stage complete with the tour bus lined up right out side the stage area. Really upping the late 80’s early 90’s vibe they had going. Nothing says, we are rockers, like a sweet tour bus. Up next was EMN or Every Mothers Nightmare. They had a grungy almost hank III vibe going and we really dug the whole set. Last up was my obvious favorite of the night Fade to Black. I love me some Metallica and these guys love delivering the goods. They jammed out the whole set and got everyone rocking. I really wish I still had my sweet mullet cause some head banging was in serious order. It was great seeing the local music community come out in full force for such a good cause and thanks to all the bands and people that made this event happen. The following weekend I headed down to Greencastle for the Helping Little Hands Rock & Ride Benefit. Which is a two day music extravaganza that hosts a motorcycle ride on Saturday along with a stacked list of bands playing from Friday night all the way through Saturday. All proceeds went to Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. Once again I was late to the party, as I rounded up some of the local Greencastle BMX crew to take them out for some live action. We caught most of The Suicide Puppets set, who as always, were melting faces and scaring local children. We stuck around for Gun Metal Gray, which I have heard a lot about but never got the chance to see them in person. They did not disappoint even though they had guest singer David Zienkiewicz at the helm. I would have never known it wasn’t the standard lineup as they performed flawlessly. My favorite song they did was a killer version of “Hotel California” played like the Eagles mixed with Metallica. Killer time, and I must say the stage, sound and lighting were all on point making for a killer show. Hats off to all that donated time and made the event happen. Be on the lookout cause they do this a couple times a year and the next event is scheduled for June 27th 2020. Well that ended my live music for the month as the next couple weekends were taken up with family visits at Lake Heron, an awesome 150 mile trip on the Gap Trail with my cycling homies from Pittsburgh to Cumberland MD, followed by a lovely weekend of maintaining my failing fleet of old automobiles. Always time to play but sometimes you have to take care of some chores in your life to keep things moving. As for November there is a lot going on in PA. Slayer is coming to Hershey on the 6th with Primus and Ministry. Three bands that spent a lot of time in the old cassette player when I was a kid. XL Live has a great month of music for Harrisburg. With names like Aaron Watson on the 9th, Bone Thugs and Harmony on the 22nd and of course at the end of the month its local legend weekend; with KIX on the 29th supported by Steel and The Sharks Reunion on the 30th. BAM!! get out the hair spray Harrisburg its the 80’s all over again. Reverb, in Reading, will not be out done with the hair bands as they have the one and only Bret Michaels on the 2nd. Later in the month they have heavy hitters Ensiferum on the 15th and Suffocation on the 23rd. Racehorse Tavern in York has a stacked month with music and entertainment for everyone’s tastes. On the 1st and 2nd they are hosting The Big Autism Benefit 2. Which is two nights of local music with all proceeds going to the Vista Autism Services. So stop out and donate for a good cause. On the 7th they are hosting a Magic Mike show for all the ladies and gentlemen that are into that sort of thing. Penntera with Thousand Pound Destruction on the 16th is rocking the Racehorse. A 717 Entertainment night featuring Defiant on the 22nd, Don’t Tell on the 23rd, a Thanksgiving Eve party with Partial Post and ending out the month with heavy hitters Voice the Chaos on the 30th. Rocktober definitely did not disappoint. Plenty of music all around me in every direction I wanted to go! I unfortunately wasn’t home much this month, but when I was I took full advantage of all of the fun around me! This month is a month full of reunions and family getting together, kids coming home from college, etc.. Thanksgiving Eve does not disappoint with way too many choices to decide where to go! Make sure and check out every ad and every schedule and make sure you’re getting out to the party that will help kick off your holiday season! This month I kicked off my fun with a trip to Chick’s for Yak Bone. Once again these ladies did not disappoint! It was quite the wild party when I arrived with skulls, moustaches, beads and stickers everywhere.. and I mean EVERYWHERE! Yak Bone doesn’t only provide one heck of a party on the stage, but they always make sure and include the entire crowd! It was a blast from beginning to end! So many laughs and just overall a great time. Yak Bone plays so many of your favorite sing-a-long party songs that easily get people up and dancing. They play music from the 60s all the way to the present, so you never have any idea what they’re going to sing next, but whatever it is will surely cause mayhem on the dance floor! As more and more venues are closing, we have to remember the ones we still have. Chick’s has been a non-smoking venue for a while now, and they have free popcorn!! They usually have bands on Friday nights, but they also have special events at different times too. My next night out was a special Thursday night for 105.7 the X’s Bike Night at Blarney’s with LeadFoot. It was a pretty chilly night, but there were still a few die-hard bikers that showed up on bikes. Even though it was chilly, LeadFoot kept it nice and warm inside rockin’ the night away. It’s crazy to see Kip and Pat as the only original LeadFoot members, but they don’t let that stop them! With their most recent addition, Sean Pedalsky on guitar, their lineup is back to being complete, and they just keep on rockin’ throughout the midstate and beyond! Russ’s range

photos by Rachel Rocks is just crazy. It’s unbelievable all of the different songs he can sing. LeadFoot once again rocked the night away and kept us entertained all night long! On a Saturday night I headed to a new advertiser, and a new venue for me, The Warwick in Hummelstown. Yes, “The Wick” has been around for forever, but it has undergone some major changes this year. Make sure and read all about it in this month’s cover story. I stopped in to see E22 Acoustic at “The Wick”. E22 consists of Jeff and Darrell. These two have been playing together for a while and together they really cover a wide range of music. Both of them can sing lead, so they can easily pass the responsibility back and forth. By the end of the night they were taking requests and everyone was having a great time. E22, or Element 22 can also play as a full band, but in some venues there just isn’t room for everyone, so they easily can adapt to whatever music a venue is looking for. On Saturday night I headed to Blarney’s for Road Case. Unfortunately, it might actually be my last trip to Blarney’s. The word on the street is that Blarney’s is closing their doors after the 1st weekend in November. It’s extremely sad to be losing another club. That makes 3 venues in the past few months. Cliff’s, Double K, and now Blarney’s. There are more and more places for acoustic duos to play with all of the breweries, wineries, etc.. but we need more clubs for our local bands! The few that are left we really have to support! Get out there and support local venues and support local bands! The music community can’t afford to lose any more venues. I’ve been going to Blarney’s since I was 15, and it was Wanda’s. Even though it’s changed names a 1,000 times, the one thing that never changed were the bathrooms. As I was sitting in my normal stall, I couldn’t help but think of all of the memories I’ve had over the years, and the amount of times I’ve peed in that exact toilet. HAHAHA!! It’s the little things in life for sure. But overall, I know I will miss the

bands and all of the good times spent in that venue, and the not so good times, let’s admit, not every night can be our finest moment, lol. Thank you to all of the owners, all of the bands, DJs, bartenders, managers, security and especially thanks to Ritt for teaching us just to mix Fireball and Jaeger for one super tasty double shot of deliciousness! Road Case did my last night at Blarney’s justice, it was an amazing night of Rock N’ Roll done right! The guitar riffs that Chris and Clint can produce are just so awesome to see and hear! Sometimes they don’t only play their own riffs, but sometimes it’s a rip-roaring riff in unison. Jeff and Eric, oh I mean Ed, hold down the backline and keep everyone in line, but meanwhile Chris Redding is out front belting out the vocals. They don’t play all of the songs that everyone else plays, but they do play a lot of the favorites, that you forgot existed, but you know and love! Thursday, Nov. 21st, Road Case will be opening for Molly Hatchet at XL Live, that’s going to be a night you don’t want to miss! Get more info at www.xlhbg.com, or check out XL Live’s ad in this issue. After Road Case I headed over to Johnny Joe’s for Observe the 93rd. For only being a 3-piece it’s crazy the amount of music and mayhem that comes pouring off the stage at every show! Since OT93 is from Mechanicsburg, you can technically say that Johnny Joe’s is their hometown venue. They have no problems packing the place. It’s cool to see all of the different ages of their fans. There are plenty of “older” people there, but they also bring out the other young adults their ages, that you don’t always see out. There isn’t much space to dance at Johnny Joe’s but everyone was taking advantage of every single spot! The next night out was a special Wednesday night show to Winner’s Circle for the Honkytonk Medics. I haven’t been to the Winner’s Circle for a very long time. I honestly didn’t know they were still having a band play Wednesday thru Saturday every week, but they are! They also still have free country line dancing lessons on Tuesdays and Thursdays. I always love people watching at the Winner’s Circle, watching everyone boot scootin’ around the dance floor. The Honkytonk Medics did a great job at answering requests and keeping all of the dancers happy. It has to be exhausting playing the same venue four days in a row, not to mention playing 4 sets each night, but the Honkytonk Medics acted like it was no big deal. I will definitely be keeping a closer eye on the Winner’s Circle. It’s always nice to be able to catch an extra band or two in the middle of the week! The next show was my first Halloween Party with Emily’s Toybox at Arooga’s on 22. At the last minute I noticed an invite to this show, and since Derek / Observe the 93rd at it’s right down the

street I couldn’t resist. I haven’t seen the full Emily’s Toybox band in quite a while, and they are always a good time! Everyone was in costume when I arrived, Mike was dressed as a giant bunny! Arooga’s Friday night Happy Hour is from 9-11, so it took a while to get everyone up and dancing, but once they did it just got crazy! At one point for about 15 minutes they were just going around asking people for any band name and they would randomly start playing a

song from that artist. It didn’t matter if it was rock, country or whatever. I was impressed because people were coming up with some pretty abstract band names, trying to throw them off, but nothing phased them! Mike told me his 1st time in the magazine was 1986. He’s definitely been playing quite a few years and he has quite a list of songs scrolling through his head, that’s for sure! It was a great night of shenanigans! Arooga’s has a pretty cool set up with the band in an extra dining room. I wish they would do bands there more often since the venues are getting fewer and further between. I was able to start partying early on a Saturday afternoon with Nate Myers and the Aces at Boneshire Brew Works for their 3rd Birthday Celebration. There was a great crowd at Boneshire, it was awesome to see so many people out supporting this awesome little brewery. Nate Myers and the Aces were on their last set when I got there, but at least I made it! Thanks Duane for the spin on the dance floor. I love when guys are willing to dance, it’s such a rare occurrence! Nate Myers and the Aces had Chris Purcell with them at this gig. I haven’t heard Chris for a while, so that was a special treat. These guys are playing all over the midstate and beyond this month! The final show of the night was the super special DEAD! show at XL Live. This was a special show with all local bands, and I’m thrilled to say, the crowd, their fans, showed up! The opening bands were told this was a Halloween Show, so in order to play they had to come up with a band, and then as their “costume” they had to be a tribute band to the band of their choice. They started the show early at 6:20 with Sonic Highway, I was bummed I missed those guys, they are a Foo Fighters tribute band. I did make it in time for the tail end of Toxicity, a System of a Down, tribute. They were awesome and had the crowd all fired up. Next was Say Anything, I’m not quite sure who they were covering, but they were all dressed in red jump suits if that helps. Day of Baphomets I assume was a Mars Volta tribute, they were more of jam band, which is desperately NOT my thing. For something that was just pulled together at the last minute it was pretty cool and entertaining. Finally, it was time for the headliner DEAD! Which is a My Chemical Romance tribute band. DEAD! Literally killed it!! From their 1st note they had so much energy pouring from the stage and it was amazing to see the fans pouring it right back to them. So many shows I go see people barely dance let alone jump and sing along, this crowd was jumping, screaming, singing, laughing, moshing, dancing, body surfing… just overall MOVING all night long! During their 2 hour show they literally took maybe one 5 minute break, but that was to change outfits. During that 5 minutes they took advantage of XL Live’s big screen and showed a video to still keep the crowd engaged. The coolest part about this insane crowd is there were no visible “issues” that I could see. Everyone just got along and had a great time. Everyone stayed safe and didn’t cause issues for the club. It was truly one of the best shows I’ve seen in a while, simply because it was so awesome to see everyone in the venue having such a great time. DEAD! Only comes around for special Halloween shows, so if you missed them this year, make sure and mark your calendars to check them out next year! Just as a little FYI, the 1st Central Pennsylvania Music Awards ballots are going to be announced on November 1st. Make sure you check them out and vote for your favorites! It was crazy to see how many bands/musicians were nominated. Some of them I’ve never even heard of! The Central Pennsylvania Music Awards will have it’s own whole ceremony like the Grammy’s at the Whitaker Center on January 30th. It’s going to be quite the show that you don’t want to miss! Once again it was another amazing month of music. It is scary to see so many local venues closing, but there are still plenty of places to go and support local music. Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! The past month proved to be a great month for punk rock shows in both PA and NYC The Menzingers (originally from Scranton) played an in-store performance at Gallery of Sound in Wilkes-Barre on October 6th to promote their latest release “Hello Exile.” The band performed acoustically at three different record stores to help sell their new album and to meet fans. The Menzingers are currently in the middle of a Fall Tour consisting of 33 dates that run into December. Now based in Philadelphia, they play their new hometown on November 29th at Franklin Music Hall. Los Angeles punks The Distillers visited Philadelphia for the first time in 13 years, playing a show at Union Transfer on October 7th. They began in 1998 and disbanded in 2006, the original members formed again in April of 2018 and announced this past year they are recording their fourth album. The Distillers sounded as good as ever and singer, Brody Dalle, still captured the audience with her signature scream. The band experienced a few set backs on their tour this year forcing them to reschedule dates twice. First, Brody Dalle suffered a herniated disc in her back and was unable to stand to perform and then drummer, Andy Granelli, cut his hand open in a bicycle accident, requiring forty stitches and endured a broken finger. It was off to New York City for two incredible punk shows in one week. A band not very well known called Wyldlife played an intimate show at Berlin in Manhattan to promote their new 7” single “Neon Nightmare.” The Brooklyn-based band have released three albums and all are fantastic. DJ Rich Russo stated “The best power punk band to come out of NYC in the last 20 years … I expect huge things from this band and you will too.” I spoke to the band briefly after the show and sounds like a tour is in the works, which may include a free show at Lancaster’s American Bar and Grill. The highlight of the month was seeing iconic punk band, The Misfits, play NYC’s Madison Square Garden on October 19th. The band was active from 1977 until breaking up in 1983. In September 2016, for the first time in 33 years, original members Glenn Danzig, Jerry Only, and Doyle reunited for two headlining shows as the Original Misfits in Denver and Chicago. The Original Misfits lineup has performed 12 shows sporadically through 2019. The Madison Square Garden show was meant to be the band’s last performance until the recently announced Philadelphia show at Wells Fargo on December 14th. I had never seen The Misfits before and they were truly unbelievable! The band sounded great as they ripped thru classics; “Hybrid Moments,” “Skulls” and “We Are 138.” Rancid and The Damned provided support for the NYC show and Dropkick Murphys and Agnostic Front will support the upcoming Philadelphia show. Harrisburg’s largest nightclub, XL also provided two good shows in the past month including heavy metal singer, Sebastian Bach (formerly of Skid Row), on September 26th and rockabilly artist JD McPherson on October 5th. Bach played Skid Row’s first album in its entirety to celebrate its 30th anniversary, including songs “18 and Life” and “I Remember You.” McPherson was impresssive playing his retro sound heavily influenced by Little Richard and Fats Domino. HMAC also brought an awesome show on September 28th featuring Southern Culture on the Skids with opener The Split Squad. SCOTS are always amazing bringing their southern friend surf rock music and really fun show. It’s hard not to take your eyes off the unreal guitar work of singer/guitarist Rick Miller. Thank you to HMAC for continuing to bring this band back year after year. The Split Squad were also great and are extremely talented musicians including the one and only Clem Burke (of Blondie) on drums. NATIONAL NEWS: The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced 16 nominees for the 2020 class. Motorhead, Dave Matthews Band, Pat Benatar, Soundgarden, The Doobie Brothers, T. Rex, Thin Lizzy, Whitney Houston and the Notorious B.I.G. are all first-time nominees. The 35th annual Rock & Roll Hall of Fame Induction Ceremony will take place on May 2nd, 2020, at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, Ohio. Nine Inch Nails, Judas Priest, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan, Depeche Mode, Kraftwerk, MC5 and Todd Rundgren round out the nominees for the 2020. Nationals continued... ary. Each year, between five and seven acts usually make it into the Rock Hall following a vote by 1,000 people. Acts are eligible for induction 25 years after the release of their first commercial recording. Metallica says its frontman James Hetfield has entered rehab, and the band is canceling its upcoming tour in Australia and New Zealand. Metallica members Lars Ulrich, Kirk Hammett and Rob Trujillo posted a statement apologizing to fans and that ticket holders will receive automatic refunds. The statement also says Hetfield has struggled with addiction for years and has re-entered a treatment program. The statement didn’t elaborate,

but the band’s members said they appreciate fans’ understanding and support of the 56-year-old Metallica co-founder. Jennifer Lopez and Shakira will headline the Pepsi Super Bowl LIV halftime show on February 2nd, 2020 at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Florida. Pepsi and the NFL teamed with Roc Nation – the Jay-Z-led company that recently teamed with the NFL for live entertainment consultation – to bring the pop stars together for the first time on stage. Lopez and Shakira are the first women to headline the Super Bowl halftime show since Lady Gaga in 2017. Other recent female Super Bowl halftime show headliners include Madonna (2012), Beyoncé (2013) and Katy Perry (2015). Ozzy Osbourne assures fans he’s “not dying,” but says his recovery from a fall earlier this year and subsequent surgery is forcing him to push back his European dates once again. The former Black Sabbath frontman underwent surgery in March after falling in his Los Angeles home and aggravating injuries from a 2003 ATV accident. The Prince of Darkness says the North American dates are still on, including Hersheypark Stadium on June 6th, 2020. Ozzy says. “I’m not dying, I am recovering, it’s just taking a little bit longer than everyone thought it

would. I’m bored stiff of being stuck in a fucking bed all day. I can’t wait to get off my ass and get going again. You’re just going to have to be a bit more patient. I’m not retiring. Original Misfits Eddie Van Halen has been flying between the United States and Germany to get treatment for throat cancer. The guitarist was treated for tongue cancer in 2000, resulting in surgery which removed a third of his tongue. He was declared cancer-free in 2002. In a 2015 interview, Van Halen revealed he had given up smoking cigarettes but blamed guitar picks for his cancer diagnosis. “I used metal picks — they’re brass and copper — which I always held in my mouth, in the exact place where I got the tongue cancer Plus, I basically live in a recording studio that’s filled with electromagnetic energy. So that’s one theory. I mean, I was smoking and doing a lot of drugs and a lot of everything. But at the same time, my lungs are totally clear. This is just my own theory, but the doctors say it’s possible.” The band, Van Halen, has been inactive since it completed its U.S. tour in October 2015. The Warwick Hotel is definitely one of those buildings that when you walk through the doors, you think, ‘If these walls could talk…’ The Warwick has been serving customers since the 1790s. Obviously it has undergone plenty of changes through the years, but one most recent huge change, as of February 2019, The Warwick is under new ownership and management. The proud owners are long time Hummelstown residents, Jody and Rick Dimpsey. They have been going to “The Wick” for years, and when

it came up for sale, they just couldn’t resist. They want to make sure The Wick is a place to come and gather with your friends and neighbors to have a good time and great food! The Warwick is a gorgeous building located at 12 West Main Street, right on the corner of the quaint little town square of Hummelstown. If you’re the type of person that likes to go to quaint, small family run restaurants, with lots of history, this is definitely a must! Unfortunately I don’t have enough space in my article to describe their complete history, but they have a great recap of it on their website, thewarwickhotel.com. I do like the last paragraph of the story, “So eat hearty and enjoy the casual friendliness of the “Wick” and if you happen to hear the creak of an old carriage wheel or the low neighing of an impatient horse awaiting its owner outside, remember the four walls have nearly two centuries of memories.” When Jody and Rick took over The Warwick, they didn’t waste time, they immediately got started making improvements. They hired a new GM, Spencer Yost and a Director of Operations, Joseph Daub. Spencer and Joseph both take their jobs very seriously and they are making sure that every guest has a superb level of service. They’ve integrated quite a few atmosphere changes within the The Wick, the entire bar area has been reorganized to make it run more efficiently. They made some changes to the menu, which also meant they had to hire a new Executive Chef, Jason Scott Swartz. Jason started at The Wick quite a few years ago, he was actually a Sous Chef for 10 years, he’s glad to be back and he’s proud to be the Chef, making sure everyone’s food is fresh and delicious! The Warwick is a full-service restaurant, it is still defined as a Dinner House. They

have good food and spirits, and they’re not open late. You can find everything on their menu from Seafood to Burgers, Fries, and Wings! They also have an amazing Sunday Brunch from 10am-2pm. If you bring in your Church Bulletin you get a 10% discount. The Warwick is casual yet fine dining, that’s suitable for the whole family. You have multiple areas you can choose to be seated from their Garden Room, Dining Room, or Bar Area. In the bar area they have high top tables, plus the bar area itself. Plus if you’re planning a party or a special family gathering, on the 2nd Floor they also have Banquet Facilities for up to 60 people. Not only do they have their fine-dining in the restaurant, but they also have full catering services available. They also recently bought a beautiful smoker Pennsylvania Musician Magazine

on wheels, so they are ready to do Offsite Events. Keep an eye out for The Wick at your local community events and sporting activities. You can check out their full catering menu on their website, www. thewarwickhotel.com. To make your dining experience more pleasant they also took out the juke box. They are in control of the background music, sometimes it is simply a playlist playing quietly, and on Friday and Saturday nights they have acoustic music from 7-10pm. They also have an Open Mic on the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of every month, hosted by Chuck Britton. The live music is set up in the bar area, so there are still plenty of places for their patrons to eat and talk amongst their friends. I was there for E22’s acoustic show. It was awesome to see people sitting at the bar and having a great time with their friends, and still making requests to the band and enjoying the show. Eventually the plan is to get built in house sound, but for now you have to bring your own sound gear. As if restoring The Warwick wasn’t enough. Jody and Rick also purchased Little Essie Mae’s Sweet Shoppe next door. The Bakery is only open from 6:30-2:30, so you have to have dessert before dinner, but life is short, so why not eat dessert first! They hired Jim Woltmon as their pastry chef. I’ve heard his pastries are scrumptious! I know I will definitely be checking it out on my next trip into Hummelstown. They have the benefit of having a gorgeous courtyard between the two buildings, so they have plans on revamping their deck and courtyard area to make it accessible to both businesses. It’s a gorgeous nook between the buildings and they plan on taking up every square inch! Even though they are just getting started, The Warwick is already more than what they were before! If you haven’t visited The Wick lately, or especially if you’ve never been there, do yourself a favor and get there and check it out. New title, new writer, same images. As a lot of you already know, Michele has decided to take on a new opportunity that has come up for her which required her to give up her position with PA Musician Magazine. She will be missed, and everyone here wishes her the best of luck. All of this being said...I didn’t want to let our article and hard work go away, so I’m going to take over the writing of the article. With the new writer comes the new name for the article. While it’s clearly a pun on my last name, it’s also the title of a song that had a lot of meaning for me when I was growing up as it was a song my dad and I loved listening to. He has had a huge influence on my love for music, and still does to this day. Granted, my tastes have expanded perhaps a bit wider since then (ok, maybe a LOT), I can truly say that he is the reason that I love music and doing what I can here to support our local music scene whether it be the local bands, or the venues supporting local and national acts. Now that I’ve got that out of the way, let’s get on to the musiåc I got out for this month, shall we? My first trip of the month was to the Abbey Bar in Har-

From their Facebook page, this appears to have been their first show since May 2018...but they still brought a huge crowd to the Abbey Bar, the place was PACKED! I think the closest

Playing mostly original works of modern folk and Americana that showed influences of jazz, pop, and mellow rock ’n’ roll; Megan sings with a soulful, smokey voice that really captures the

sound I can compare them to would be The Avett Brothers (a personal favorite) but also with their own unique sound. They finished the show with a cover of Seven Nation Army unlike any I’ve heard and it was just mesmerizing! If they do future shows in the area, I can highly recommend going out to see their energetic show.

Rivers The following afternoon I trekked over to Little Buffalo State Park for their Festival of the Arts to see a few bands that we’ve covered in the past. First up was the Shrimp Ryan Jig band playing their mix of great old time Appalachian and Irish melodies. It’s different than most everything you’d hear around here, but they have a lot of fun and are very talented. Following them, I caught AMFM’s set on the main pavilion stage. I’d call them a “Jam Band” (one of my favorite styles of music), but that’d be over-simplifying it really with their mix of rock, funk, blues and maybe a few others thrown in for good measure. If this is a style that interests you, you’d be doing yourself a favor to catch a show sometime.

My next trip out was to see the Anne Kerstetter Band play up in Mifflinburg at the Mifflinburg Hotel & Scarlet D Tavern. Anne’s band plays a great mix of originals along with R&B and classic rock covers that this night included Squeeze Box, Bobby Magee, Highway Son, and Piano Man. You can’t help but have a great time when Anne’s band is playing. Oh...and try the chicken quesadilla if you stop in at Scarlet D, you won’t regret it!

The following night I headed out to Landisburg’s Laurel Run Lodge (aka Chick’s) to see Mechanicsburg based Vulcans, an Indie/Folk/Americana band with a side of bluegrass. These guys were awesome...they interacted with the crowd very well telling jokes and giving background on their originals that they played, as well as played a few covers including “Creep” and “Landslide”. They switched back and forth with each playing a variety of instruments including acoustic guitar, banjo, mandolin and harmonica.

The final night of music for me for this article, I walked down the street to The Facktory in Liverpool for a show organized by Sink In for the start of their newest tour. First up was an acoustic set by Observe The 93rd...well, it was two-thirds of Observe The 93rd LOL. Derek and Dylan played a great acoustic set of covers and an original or two as well. Thanks for coming up guys, enjoyed seeing you play again. Next up was Watson Maack. Watson is currently in college down in Tennessee but came up to go out on tour with Sink In. They played a wide variety of covers and showed solid talent. Third up on the bill was Snow Villian, a Harrisburg based band that, as lead singer Grant Goldsworthy

Sink In was Sink In, an LA-based Pop/Rock band with local roots. I’ve seen these guys (and covered them) a few times now, and they always put on a high-energy show that gets better every time I see them. This show was no different. They played some of their new singles, they’ve added some new mixes and new lighting to their show that I think really set them apart.

Pennsylvania Musician Magazine celebrates another orbit around the sun this month, marking 37 years of serving this state’s music industry and community! Thanks again to Josh Noll for keeping this magazine’s fire burning, and for allowing me to continue to be a part of it! Live music migrated back indoors last month, with several area fall festivals and other events helping to bring the outdoor season to a close. One of those events was the second annual Cre814 Fest, which took place during late September in downtown Altoona. Celebrating the spirit of creativity within the 814 area code, the Cre814 Fest featured an assortment of artists, vendors, and live original music on several stages. I caught some of the main stage acts during the afternoon and evening, starting with Johnstown rockers Silver Screen on the Heritage Plaza railcar stage. Singer and rhythm guitarist Stephen Platt, lead guitarist Ben Ressler, bassist Robbi Rummel and drummer Austin Danel did a selection of their grunge-based original songs and select covers. Following them on the Heritage Plaza gazebo stage were fellow Johnstownians The Crew Of The Half Moon. The trio of multi-instrumentalists and singers Katie Rhodes and Dan Oatman, plus drummer Jon Beard, showcased a number of new songs they have been working on toward their next recording expected out next year. This Crew’s sound continues to test new horizons, mixing elements of alternative rock with blues, jazz, progressive rock arrangements and more. Some of the new numbers performed this day included the piano-driven “Porcelain,” an intensifying lengthier blues-geared number and more. Back at the railcar stage, Black Cat Moan celebrated songs from their new album “Symbols.” Now a foursome featuring founding members TK Mundok on vocals and “Saint” George Byich on guitar, plus Rob Bonsell on drums and Brad Jamison on bass, Black Cat Moan has stretched from their blues-rooted

foundation to incorporate elements of rock, funk, jazz and more. Led by TK’s impassioned and charismatic delivery, the group did new songs such as “Is What It Is” and “Lay It Down,” as well as tunes from their previous CD such as “Any Day” and more. I only caught one song from Pittsburgh-based Black Ridge, but was impressed with the energy level that this band now brings to the stage, including new frontman Paul Guerrini. On their set-opening “Blue Collar Blues,” Paul commanded attention from the get-go with his boisterous energy, backed by the band’s tight rocking thunder including a guest sax player. The Pennsoulvanians then followed with their soul and groovebased sound. Recently adding Lyndsay Reilly on saxophone, the group demonstrated their melody-driven blend of soul, hip-hop, folk, reggae and more, led by the soulful croon of singer/guitarist Chet Denny and rapper Michael “Duville” Thomas. Johnstown’s Afro N’at slammed the lid on Cre814 Fest with their bold, brassy and boisterous set. Eight members strong including a three-part horn section, Afro N’at captivated the audience with their uplifting funk-based instrumental mixture, including a number of original compositions plus a rendition of Average White Band’s “Pick Up the Pieces.” Cre814 was well-attended, and it was heartening to witness the support for creativity and originality throughout the day. The following day, I journeyed to Knoebel’s Amusement Resort near Elysburg to enjoy one of the final days of the park’s 2019 season and catch my first look at Grand Junction. Singer Stacey Kline, fiddler and guitarist Terry Wright, and singer and songwriter Jeff Mamett handled the bulk of lead singing duties; with Webb Kline playing keys, steel guitar and dobro and Jake Kline behind the drum kit. Grand Junction’s banner says “At the crossroads where country swings,” and that is an accurate description of what this group brought to the stage – a blend of country and western swing, plus some country-rock and southern rock, and even a few of Jeff’s original songs. Among their song selection for this performance were Jim McGraw and the Western Sundowners’ “Miles and Miles of Texas,” the Johnny Cash triple-shot of “Hey, Porter” into “Folsom Prison Blues” and “I’ve Been Everywhere,” Charlie Ryan/Commander Cody’s “Hot Rod Lincoln,” plus numbers from Marshall Tucker Band, Townes Van Zandt and Louis Jordan. Stacey showed her strong

voice on Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” and Jeff led the group on two of his original country-flavored tunes, “Bing Bang Boom” and “An Outlaw’s Song.” Terry showcased his fiddling talents a few times during the set, capped by his fiery fiddle-sawing on Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” to end the day. I enjoyed Grand Junction’s show; their musical blend was cohesive, their voices and playing were in good form, and their onstage mood was pleasant and welcoming. Oh spud! Ebensburg celebrated the potato again in late September during their annual Potatofest, featuring vendors and community organizations offering a wide variety of potato-based foods, arts and crafts vendors, and live music on four stages throughout downtown Ebensburg. I arrived at the Main Tent stage in time to see much of the performance by Miss Melanie’s Double Something, the new project that has emerged from the former Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats. “Miss Melanie” Morrison Zeigler and her bold, joyous voice are again front and center in this new project, joined by guitarist/signer Brian Cleary, bassist Bob Hart and drummer Chris Coyne. Blues remains a major part of Miss Melanie’s new endeavor, but the group stretched into upbeat soul, rock and reggae flavors as well. Some of their song selection this day included Hall & Oates’ “Sara Smile,” Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie,” The Spinners’ “Then Came You,” Todd Rundgren’s “I Saw the Light,” plus numbers from Erykah Badu, Alicia Keys and more. I then headed up North Center Street to the Memorial Tent stage to catch the homestretch of Johnstown duo Walt & Jackie’s performance. Singing and playing several instruments, Walt Churchey and Jackie Kopco blended their voices and generated pleasant vibes with their mix of favorites, including Jackie’s bold rendition of Elton John’s “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” the pair’s sing-along rendition of Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” plus numbers from John Denver, Sugarland, the Walt-fronted edition of Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” Bon Jovi & Jennifer Nettles’ “Who Says You Can’t Go Home” and more. I then proceeded to the Penn Eben Park gazebo stage, where The Zero Club had begun rocking out. An offshoot project from Negan, The Zero Club features Negan members Mike Davis on lead vocals and congas, Josh Yahner on bass and Bob Gray on guitar, along with Rick Ramsey on guitar and harmonica, and Dave continued on next page...

“Red” Solinski on drums. The Zero Club mixed hard-rocking numbers with an emphasis on the 1990s, doing tunes from Stone Temple Pilots, Sublime, Seven Mary Three, Social Distortion, Tom Petty, the Doors, Johnny Cash and more. I returned to the Main Stage to see Pittsburgh’s Metro. First formed 20 years ago but recently returning to action, Metro – singer Elisha Costello, bassist/singer Chris Caruso, guitarist Ron McBurney and drummer Bobby Breakiron – performed their party mixture of rock, funk, dance and party favorites. They generated street dancing with tunes from Prince, Walk The Moon, Def Leppard, Bon Jovi, Journey and more. I then finished my Potatofest tour at the South Center Street tent, where Bruce Schettig was into the homestretch of his performance. Accompanied by a second guitarist, Bruce performed innovative acoustic takes on a variety of numbers, including songs from Traffic, Jeff Beck, Classics IV, Jimi Hendrix, Nat King Cole, Bob Dylan, Gerry & the Pacemakers, Frank Sinatra and more. The zombie virus impacted downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza area for the fourth year in a row early last month, with ZombieTown USA providing the fun safe zone, complete with zombie themed activities, a costume contest, a zombie wedding, Altoona’s Halloween parade, and live music throughout the day. The Backyard Rockers – singer/guitarist Rich Dasch, Mo Yon on guitar and bass, and yours truly on djembe, bongos and kazoo, led off the music with acoustic classics from The Band, Tom Petty, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, Marshall Tucker Band and more Jae Smith then mixed 1990s-era and recent favorites plus a few deep cuts with several original songs, sharing some stories along the way. Before his version of The Badlees’ “Fear of Falling,” Jae shared the story of how members of The Badlees made sure that an under-aged Jae got to see them perform one night at an Ebensburg venue. He also broke out such numbers as NOFX’s “Linoleum,” Lifehouse’s “Hanging By A Moment,” the original tunes “Highland Haze” and “Weeks or Months” and more. Felix & the Hurricanes then braved the zombie apocalypse with their blend of classic rock, blues and original songs. Four members strong this day with namesake Felix Kos on lead vocals and guitar, Bob Watters on drums and vocals, Pat McGinnis on bass and vocals and Chuck Knepper on guitar and vocals,

the Hurricanes did a wide selection of numbers spanning tunes from Neil Young, Allman Brothers, James Taylor, The Band, ZZ Top, James Gang, Keith Urban, Ben E. King and more. Guest Rick Ramsey joined in on congas and harmonica on a few songs, and the Hurricanes celebrated the Halloween theme with renditions of the Munsters TV show theme and Bobby Boris Pickett’s “Monster Mash.” Following the zombie wedding, Deny Your Maker celebrated the music of Alice In Chains. Another side project from the band Negan, Deny Your Maker – singer Mike Davis, guitarists Bob Gray and Rick Ramsey, bassist Josh Yahner and drummer Damien Falatek – celebrated songs from throughout the Alice In Chains catalog, including popular and deep cuts. They effectively captured the vocals and harmonies of Layne Staley-era Alice In Chains, while delivering the appropriate hard-rocking firepower on numbers like “We Die Young,” “Dam That River,” “Them Bones,” “No Excuses,” “Man in the Box,” “Rooster,” Would?” and more. And after the Halloween parade, The Musicologists celebrated the music of Prince to close out the band portion of ZombieTown. Chet Denny and Todd McKeone shared lead singing duties, with Ashley Peer accompanying with backing vocals, Jarrett Bickel on guitar, Hunter Karns on bass, Randy Servello on drums, and Lyndsay Reilly on saxophone. They performed the Prince hits such as “Let’s Get Crazy,” “Raspberry Beret,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Kiss,” “When Doves Cry,” “Musicology” and – for the finale – “Purple Rain.” ZombieTown USA grows bigger and better every year, and it returns on Oct. 3, 2020. I caught performances during both weekends of last month’s annual Bedford Fall Foliage Festival in downtown Bedford. During the first weekend, I saw Pittsburgh’s Arte Tedesco and his band as they entertained on the downtown gazebo stage. earlier this month during the first weekend of the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival. Flanked by Fred Delu on keys, Will Franklin on bass and Greg McIltrot on percussion, Arte sang and played guitar as he presented his fusion of blues, jazz and light rock flavors. Arte performed songs from throughout his career, along with a few tunes from his forthcoming new album, “Lightning Strikes.” He referenced his popular 1980s Pittsburgh-area group, The Haywire Band, with songs from that era such as “Special continued on next page...

Lady” and the set-closer “Dangerous Man.” He did new songs from the forthcoming album such as “Love May Come Again” and “Hurricane.” He also did numbers such as “A Man’s Gonna Love You” and “Miami,” plus led the audience on a singalong during “Dream to Hold On To.” It all sounded good – Arte and his band are skilled players, and Arte kept his presentation friendly and cordial. I returned to the Bedford Fall Foliage Festival the following weekend to witness more performers at the gazebo stage. I arrived in time to catch the last two songs from Indiana’s Coastal Remedy. Lead singer and guitarist Max Bizousky, bassist Matt Snyder and drummer Dylan Murphy closed out their performance with Neil Young’s “Down By the River” into the Beatles’ “Come Together.” Performing during the band changeover was Grammy-nominated accordionist and singer Kevin Solecki. Based in Pittsburgh, Kevin entertained with a variety of polkas, standards and other numbers. Besides obviously knowing his way around the accordion keys and buttons, Kevin was a fun entertainer who engaged the audience and led them on several crowd-participation numbers, including the “Chicken Dance” and the “Hokey Pokey.” He also did polka favorites such as the “Pennsylvania Polka,” “In Heaven There Is No Beer” and the “Too Fat Polka,” plus popular standards such as the Dean Martin-popularized “That’s Amore,” the Bobby Darin-popularized “Beyond the Sea,” the German “Hofbrauhaus-Song,” and an Armed Forces song medley to close out his set. Kevin played his accordion with a constant smile and had the crowd clapping, singing and even dancing along by set’s end. Then taking the stage was Williamsport-based Americana group the Boom Town Boys. Together a year, the roster of singer and guitarist Joe Tokay II, multi-instrumentalist and singer Mike Steppe, bassist Nick Layton and drummer Mike Wrench mixed original songs from their recently-released debut EP “River Song” with numbers from Tom Petty, Oasis, Dwight Yoakam, Johnny Cash and more. The Boom Town Boys could vary their repertoire from softer and rustic to hard-driving and intense, sometimes in the course of the same song – such as their closer, the title track from their “River Song” EP. I celebrated my birthday last month with a trip to Ligonier for the annual Fort Ligonier Days festival, which featured food, arts and crafts vendors, historic reenactments and demonstrations, and live music. I arrived in time to see some of the performance by Pittsburgh’s Jeff Jimerson and Airborne. Known for singing the National Anthem at Pittsburgh Penguins hockey games during the past two decades, Jeff sang and played bass, flanked by keyboardist Herb Schweitzer, guitarist Dave Scopa and drummer Dave Marion. The group mixed popular favorites for the remainder of their set, doing numbers from Luke Bryan, Tim McGraw, John Denver and Kenny Loggins. Drummer Dave fired off a solo, and sang lead on Airborne’s closing number, a version of Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run.” Following them was State College’s Cousin Neddie. Five members strong, Cousin Neddie took the crowd on a journey back to the new wave and pop 1980s; doing numbers from Tears for Fears, Crowded House, Pretenders, Til Tuesday, Cars, Peter Gabriel, Smithereens, Police and more. Cori Donaghy sings lead, backed by guitarist Mike Cullin, keyboardist Steve Fishbaine, bassist Patrick Donaghy and drummer Dave McKee. Cousin Neddie delivered their set with abundant enthusiasm, especially drummer Dave, whose animated performance and antics behind the kit helped fire up the crowd. Capping the festival was a performance by 1960s hitmakers Jay and the Americans. Three members remain from the group’s hitmaking heyday – founding members Howie Kane and Sandy Deanne, plus Marty Sanders. The group’s third and current ‘Jay,’ Jay Reincke, joined in 2006. Backed by their six-piece USA Band, Jay & the Americans celebrated their own big hits such as “Only in America,” “Come a Little Bit Closer,” “Let’s Lock the Door,” “Cara Mia,” “Sunday and Me,” “This Magic Moment” and more. The group also celebrated music from 1960s contemporaries like Roy Orbison, the Ronettes, the Drifters, Fabian and others, and performed Steely Dan’s “Reeling in the Years” in honor of the fact that both Donald Fagen and Walter Becker were members of Jay & the Americans’ recording band in the early 1970s. This was an entertaining and informative performance, as Jay & the Americans shared stories and insight on their hits and the early 1960s rock’n’roll era. Indoors, Round The Mountain, LLC, presented the latest installment of their “From Nashville, Songs and Stories” songwriter showcase last month at Altoona’s Mishler Theatre. ers to perform their music ‘in the round,’ and share stories and insights on their careers. The latest showcase featured songwriters Jenn Schott, Phillip White, and Mark Nesler, who have collectively written hit songs for such names as George Strait, Reba McIntire, Tim McGraw and more. Each did a few of their hits…Phil performed “Nobody But Me” (which became a hit for Blake Shelton), “I’m Movin’ On” (Rascal Flatts) and “I Will Survive” (a hit for Reba McIntyre, who called Phil while he was bass fishing to inform him that she was recording the song). Jenn performed some of her creations, including the title track to Tim McGraw’s “Two Lanes of Freedom” album, and a song Tim is currently recording, “7,500 O.B.O.” And Mark performed his hit song creations such as “Just to See You Smile” (which became a chart-topping hit for Tim McGraw), “Living and Living Well” (a Number One hit for George Strait), “Let Me Down Easy” (a Number One hit for Billy Currington), “A Different World” (recorded by Bucky Covington) and more. It was interesting to learn the stories behind the songs, as well as hear them in their stripped-down forms by the folks who created them. The next “From Nashville, Songs and Stories” chapter happens at the Mishler Theatre on January 17, 2020. There are not too many bands that can say that they have been around for 50 years. But Williamsburg-based group Second Edition achieved the 50-year milestone this year, and celebrated the occasion with a matinee reunion and jam in late September at the Williamsburg Community Center. Singer, guitarist, keyboardist, bass player and founding member Herm Arnold helped form the band in 1969, and they played their first few shows under the name Black Mountain Express before changing their handle to Second Edition the following year. The group recorded a full length vinyl album and two 45 rpm records during their first two years, plus a subsequent 45 rpm record in 1981 and a cassette album around 1990. Second Edition also had the honor of opening for .38 Special at the 1992 Huntingdon County Fair. Through multiple member changes through the years, Second Edition has maintained a steady presence on the area music scene. The current edition features Herm, Lonnie Aungst on guitar and vo-

cals, Big Jim on bass and Randy Lang on drums. A number of Second Edition alumni attended the reunion and joined in on a performance of classic rock, pop and country hits; some of the participating musicians included drummers Scott Gardner and Tom McDonald, bassist Dan McCorkle and others. On the heels of releasing their self-titled new CD, White Witch hosted and headlined a concert in late September at the Gamble Farm Inn & Suites in Jersey Shore. Mycenea Worley led off the night with her acoustic set, mixing her own original numbers with select covers. Her voice and smile were in good form, as Mycenea did such numbers as her own “100 Days,” plus renditions of Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee” and Miranda Lambert’s “Vice.” Unknown Legend followed with a strong set of hard-hitting classic rock favorites. Lead singer and guitarist Markus Hill, lead guitarist Bobby Blaze, bassist Keith Kitchen and drummer Alan Stever helped fire up the crowd with numbers from Ted Nugent, Neil Young, Billy Squier, AC/ DC, Judas Priest, the Kinks and more. Next was my first look at Mechanicsburg-based hard rockers Defiant, who brought an aggressive, intense brand of rock to the stage. Singer and guitarist Albert Halterman, guitarist Joe Defiant, bassist Paul Barlowski and drummer Paul Cochran scalded oxides off the venue’s inner walls with scorching original songs off their debut recording “The Anarch-EP” such as “Four Years for Nothing,” “He’s Watching,” “Wendy” and “Dust the Democracy,” along with renditions of the Sex Pistols’ “Anarchy in the U.K.” and the Beatles’ “Helter Skelter.” To the cheers of the crowd, White Witch next took the stage to perform their new songs and favorites. Singer Jeff Pittinger, guitarist Doug Lehman, drummer Carl Berry and Bill Zimmerman on bass did hard-hitting numbers off their new CD such as “Changes Comin’” and their update of “The Seed” and “Slaughter in Salem.” They also broke out an early number from their career, “The Crutch,” and performed numbers from Joan Baez, Ozzy Osbourne, and – to end the set – a version of Judas Priest’s “Breakin’ the Law” with guest Randy Bowers playing bass. session then ended the night. Hate Grenade organized another edition of their annual Trick or FEED charity event last month at McGarvey’s, which raised funds and nonperishable food items for the Altoona Food Bank. I missed show openers Same Old Haunt, but heard that they represented well. I did arrive in time to catch my first look at 2BB, who demonstrated their musical realm of dark-toned alternative and nu-metal originals. Mindspine alumnus Spencer Puzak sings and plays guitar, alongside keyboardist and singer Callie Shumway and drummer Toby Quick. 2BB delivered swaggering grooves, multi-speed rhythms and eerie keyboard fills to provide a unique sonic angle. With singer Matt Stoyanoff arriving on stage wearing a pumpkin head, Fyre followed with their set of progressive-geared metal music. Matt, guitarists Logan Yablonski and Sean Stringer, bassist Corey Colledge and drummer Tanner Kaurudar mixed songs from their two CD’s with select covers – including Black Sabbath’s “N.I.B.,” Dio’s “Holy Diver,” Foreigner’s “Juke Box Hero,” and with Ember’s Fall’s Jairo Cerritos helping with backing vocals, Judas Priest’s “Livin’ After Midnight.” Hate Grenade then pulled the pin and detonated with their explosive set of nu-metal originals to close the night. Frontman Jeff Glace, guitarist Chuck Lavera, bassist Donnie D and drummer Mike Powers blasted out furious tunes from their latest CD “The King Is Dead” such as the title track and “Revelation,” earlier tunes such as “Left Behind” and more. Hate Grenade again left it all on the stage, and pushed their metal aggression to its limits. Trick or FEED was another successful effort, which will help needy residents during the upcoming holiday season. I saw several bands for the first time in recent weeks, including Candlelight Red/Backstreet Law guitarist Jeremy Edge’s blues-rocking project Black Star Sunrise at The Arena in State College…Johnstown/Somerset County rockers Facedown at Ebensburg’s Castle Pub…State College favorites Burn Unit as they partied down State College’s Phyrst to close out a weekend…Altoona area rockers Jack Squat as they entertained a Friday night football crowd at the Bullpen Lounge in Tyrone… continued on next page...

and Talisman – the duo of singer Mellissa Vella and guitarist/ keyboardist Phil Baskin as they performed at Hagen’s Irish Pub in Chest Springs. Other performances I saw included New York City blues-rocking women Jane Lee Hooker at McGarvey’s, as well as Downshift at McGarvey’s. So many bands, so little space… The area music scene mourned the loss of two members in recent weeks. Ember’s Fall frontman Dennis Ray Gee Jr. lost his life in an auto accident in Tioga County early last month. He was 31. A rising talent, Dennis was an innovative music creator and lyricist, as well as an exciting, intense performer; he was pleasant and personable off the stage as well. And longtime Altoona area musician Bob Hammond passed away last month from an apparent heart attack at age 66. A guitar player and singer who loved the blues, Bob performed with numerous Altoona area bands dating back to the 1970s. Some of his groups included The Surge, Bittersweet, The Rolling Rockers, Red White & Blues and others. He also frequently sat in with the U.S. Hotel

House Band during their Wednesday night jam nights at Hollidaysburg’s U.S. Hotel. Bob was a respected and influential musician, and will be missed. Our heartfelt condolences go out to the surviving families, friends, and musical colleagues of both men. ROADKILL – STILL ALIVE AND…WELL? (no label) “Rot and Roll” has returned…The band that extolled the virtues of alcohol consumption on Independence Day, celebrated launching golf balls deep into the forest, championed the cause of the romantically-disadvantaged on Valentine’s Day, created a satirical metalcore ode to Oreo cookies, expressed the desire to break up with Alanis Morisette, and…lest you forgot…turned a beloved barroom-caliber dartboard into local Christmas season lore, while unleashing wrath upon the rotund, red-clad bearded elf who dared to take said dartboard back to the North Pole… returns after nearly a decade hiatus from the central PA music scene. Roadkill is back with a brand new roster and a new album, called Still Alive and…Well? Remaining founding member, ringleader, singer, bassist and sage Greg Majewsky has assembled a new mach edition of Roadkill, with guitarist Tommy Raab and drummer Clayton Miller. It doesn’t take long into the CD to realize that Greg’s wit, sarcasm and sense of (mostly self-deprecating) humor are still intact, and the disc’s eight tracks are split between rocking numbers and comic relief. On the album’s spoken prelude, “A Worthless History Lesson,” a senile duffer character recounts how he almost ended Roadkill on a foggy road years ago but one member got away (we presume Greg), leading into the death metal-flavored “Your Blood Is My Wine.” From there, Roadkill gives us the first of two contradictory numbers, the lengthy jam “Happy Blues”; the second such number, the tongue-in-cheek “Sad Polka,” happens later in the disc. The album’s centerpiece has to be the rowdy, stomping anthem “American Slob,” where Greg proudly celebrates messiness, laziness and the slovenly lifestyle; it recalls Denis Leary’s 1993 comedy-rock hit “A**hole,” and builds into raucous gang shout choruses during the song’s homestretch. The title track “Still Alive and…Well?” finds Greg contemplating about his role in the grand scheme of things against a bluesy-grooving backdrop. Greg snarls at shady preachers on the disc’s last song, the rocking “You Should Be Ashamed,” before a cameo by the continued on next page...

aforementioned old man character closes out the set. The band is solid, and can still generate loud and rowdy blues-based rock as before. Greg’s boisterous personality is still front and center, but it is interesting to hear him in a more thoughtful vein on the album’s title track. Recorded at Bill Filer’s Audible Images Recording in Port Matilda, this set sounds balanced, full and raw, allowing Greg and Roadkill’s three chords and the truth to shine out, warts and all. Still alive and well after 30 years of rot and roll, Roadkill brings ‘terrible music, terrible singing and unfunny jokes’ (Greg’s description, not this reviewer’s) back to the forefront on Still Alive and…Well? Long live rot and roll! (The CD can be obtained at shows through Roadkill’s Facebook page, “Roadkills30th.”) AFRO N’AT – AFRO N’AT EP (no label) Launched two years ago. Johnstown’s Afro N’at has fast become popular throughout western and central PA with their hot fusion of funk, jazz and African musical flavors. The group’s self-titled, all-instrumental, four-song EP gives listeners a lively introduction into their musical world. Afro N’at is led by the powerful horn section of sax man Alec Zander Redd, trombone and euphonium player Mere Kae Redd, trombonist Tom Buchko and trumpet player Rich Williams; with Matt Partsch playing guitar, Randy Penrod on bass and Elias Ghantous on drums and percussion. The group lays down captivating, infectious grooves that quickly hook listener attention, and build into vigorous blends of horn, guitar and percussion savvy. The disc-opener “Fuzzy Pharaoh” starts out with a reserved Latin flair, before escalating into a busy groove of full horns, drums and hand percussion. “Cannon” and “The Wind-Up” provide energetic funk-jazz workouts that mix broad group passages with instrumental solo highlights. The disc-finisher “Remedo” quickly establishes a tricky time signature, and escalates this cadence toward a soaring climax; the cycle then repeats, with interesting solo highlights and a well-placed stoppage keeping this musical journey compelling throughout. Enthusiasm and fun permeate all four tracks, and it’s easy to sense the happy and adventurous vibes Afro N’at bring throughout the set. The talent level and coordination are strong, and the solo displays are ambitious and heartfelt. Produced by Daniel Blake at Schoolhouse Recording Studio in Greensburg, this EP sounds full, balanced and vibrant throughout, with each instrument well represented in the mix. This EP provides a fun listen, and a strong introductory glimpse into Afro N’at’s moving and grooving musical world.
