Hello February!! Music Month for Central PA!! There are so many great music events in our area, that it is hard to keep track of them all. It has been another whirl wind month for us around the PA Musician office. We had a family emergency on Monday night when the founder of the paper, Whitey the Mighty, over did it a little too much during a jam session with a good friend who stopped by. In dad’s words, he was just handing him two guitars with the same hand, at the same time (both heavy Fenders), when he had pain in his shoulder. Mom called me over and after a long discussion, mom and I could not talk him into going to the ER. So we had a long, worried filled night and the next morning we eventually “talked” him into going to the ER. When I say talked, it’s more of a “get your ass in the car now” kinda talk. It has been a long couple days and we still don’t have a lot of answers, but the one main thing is he has a blood clot in his lung and they are giving him meds to break it up. They still are not sure if he had a heart attack or if the signs they are seeing are from a previous one. We are not sure what else they will be able to do, but we are hoping to have him back home by the end of the week and back to his old self of bugging mom, playing uke and shooting BB guns in the house. So as I type this, we are under the gun to get this to the press on time in the morning, but as always, I have lots of awesome help and it will get done and I will be out delivering in the freezing cold temps of PA in no time! Hey, look at the bright side, at least it won’t be raining this month. Maybe just a little snow. Onto the month of February. It starts out with Gettysburg Rocks early in the month and if you look through the paper (or www. pamusician.net) you will see that a lot of your favorite local bands are helping out for a good cause. Be sure to head out and check out some of the live music. Racehorse Tavern is having a Gettysburg Rocks Pre Party on the 2nd. Then the following weekend, 8,9 & 10th, Gettysburg Rocks is in full swing. There will be around 150 bands at 17 venues and it is all to benefit Four Diamonds supporting children battling cancer. Following that, we kick off the Harrisburg University concert series with two shows at Club XL. This month it’s Kurt Vile on the 11th and The Glorious Sons on the 16th. Check out the ad on page 2 because they have a ton of great shows coming to town in the next couple months at Club XL and the Whitaker Center. Speaking of Club XL, they are not slowing down. They have so much going on this month from bull riding to Kung Fu! and everything in between. On February 22nd it was going to be “An Evening with Keller Williams”, but recently Keller Williams joined up with The Accidentals to form The Keller Williams Accident, which according to Keller is no accident. They make “freakin’” great music together. After their performance, Keller Williams will follow up with a solo looping set. All-in-all, an amazing evening is planned for all those in attendance. Get your tickets in advance to save $5. Our friends over at the Scottish Rite Theatre are at it again and they are starting out February with an open house on the 2nd to kick off a list of events they have planned for the new year. On the 16th they will have Echoes “The American Pink Floyd”. You can get your tickets now from ticketmaster and as always, there is plenty of well-lit, free parking and they offer a unique theatre experience you just can’t find now days. What could follow all that? Well, one look at the paper and you can just guess, it’s The 23rd Annual Millennium Music Conference! Wow, to think it has been that long is pretty crazy. I
remember attending the first one so it’s kinda crazy thinking it’s been that long ago. One thing is for sure, MMC is always a new adventure. In the early years we had some crazy times. I don’t remember the specific years and honestly they all seem to run together for me. One of my “single” years in attendance, we went around telling everyone we passed a “party in 318” or whatever our room number was. Sort of a Michael Scott move, but by the end of the night we had two or three rooms full of people on our floor and many of them were wreaking havoc throughout the hotel. The next morning looked like a bomb went off in the hotel and not just our floor, but the whole place. Large tree like plants in the elevator, pizza boxes, beer cans, broken shit all over the place. We sort of got in trouble that year and we were not asked back to that hotel. One of the coldest years we had a super blizzard and MMC became Snow Millennium Fest. Most people were left stranded at the main conference and we all ended up staying an extra day as the city was in a state of emergency. Or the time while finishing up a night of music (think it was Halestorm that was playing in the main hall.) They decided to “evacuate” the crowd by throwing on the fire alarm. Myself, being slightly intoxicated, dashed up flight after flight of stairs to get my parents out of the hotel. When Mom came to her door she laughed at me and said the hotel had warned the sane people they were going to sound the alarm and that there was no fire. It’s always good to keep up on your cardio cause you never know when you will need it. At least that’s what I told myself. I am happy to say this will be my first MMC as the owner of the paper and I am looking forward to hanging out and meeting all the people I have come to know through emails, phone calls and Facebook posts. So if you see me, say “hi”, buy some merch or just hang out and shoot the shit. If you see me acting up, please remind me (in the words of my mother) that I am representing the PA Musician Magazine and to be on my best behavior. Hooray for February! One of the craziest, music filled months of the year. Winter finally arrived in PA in January and messed up quite a few shows. Hopefully it only snows on Mondays in February. Kudos to the bands, venues, etc. that don’t give up on providing entertainment throughout PA even in the unpredictable Winter months. Some of the biggest events in Central PA are the Millennium Music Conference, Lancaster Roots &
Blues Festival, and Gettysburg Rocks. All 3 are amazing events that bring tons of talent to Central PA. Before I get too excited talking about what’s coming up, let me tell you about all the fun I did have in January. The chaos started early this month with a trip to “the rebellion” happening at Johnny Joe’s. When I arrived Mutiny at Midnight was attacking the stage. I could immediately tell why they are calling this show “the rebellion”. Their songs are filled with aggression and from what I could understand of the vocals, they were fairly anti-political. Their energy is intense and they did a great job at getting the rebellion started. The next band of the month was Defiant, who were also on our cover last month. After interviewing these guys I was looking forward to checking out another show. Again, Defiant definite-
ly didn’t disappoint and continued the rebellion in true Defiant fashion. I appreciated how Al took the time between songs to give us a brief explanation behind the meaning of each song. When you are at shows like this with so many bands on the bill it always seems like everything is so rushed and chaotic, so it was nice to take that brief moment between the chaos. Defiant is building up quite the following and it was great to see so many people out supporting them. Bullet shredded the stage next with an intense set right off the top! They are definitely a mix of rock/punk/craziness, straight out of York. I unfortunately only stayed for their first few songs and then it was time to zoom on to my next venue, so I missed the headliner Goat Skull Rebellion too. Hopefully I’ll catch you guys next time you are in the area. To finish off the night we zoomed down and around to Blarney’s for Adrian Blitzer. Adrian Blitzer always puts on a great show. This month Blarney’s and the Park Inn are the hosts of the Millennium Music Conference for the 2nd year in a row! Last year was a blast and went off without a hitch, hopefully this year will be a lot of the same! The following weekend I headed to Club XL for Go Go Gadjet!! It’s been 12 years since they played in our area, and I was thrilled they were GO GO GADJET at Club XL back in our area, and by the attendance to their show, I’d say I’m not the only one! Go Go Gadjet has still been playing in the 12 years, just not in our area. bands about “stage presence” and how much of an impact that makes on your show… but do yourself a favor, check out Go Go Gadjet, they are the definition of stage presence! It was awesome to see them still have their passion and drive behind their performance. I’m sure you will see Go Go Gadjet back on the schedule at Club XL soon! I know I’ll be watching and waiting… The last event of the month I decided to head down to Champions in Highspire for the Central PA Blues Society’s Thursday night jam session. This is crazy cool event held EVERY Thursday at Champions. Every week they have a host, people come in and sign up by instrument, then depending on which “instruments” show up, the host creates “groups” of musicians to play together. Each group plays 4 or 5 songs together, and then it’s on to the next group. Every week is completely different, and they mix things up as much as possible, but one thing is for sure, you always here some killer blues! The night I went they had 6-8 musicians on the stage for each of the 5 sets. That’s a lot of musicians! I never knew we had so many talented blues musicians in our area. During the 5th set Rocky let us know that they just rapped up recording a 10 song CD they will be releasing at the annual picnic Memorial Day weekend. It’s a collaboration CD with quite a few musicians and bands in the area. It sounds like it’s going to be pretty amazing and hopefully a great fundraiser for the Central PA Blues Society. If you’re ever looking for something entertaining on a Thursday night, or if you’re a blues musician, do yourself a favor and head to Champions, you’ll be glad you did. Speaking of blues, this month Rich Ruoff is once again hosting the Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival in Lancaster. You can check out all of the info in his ad or on their website, lancasterrootsandblues.com. Check out their full schedule of their amazing music and do yourself a favor and get down there for some jaw dropping music. This year the MMC and Lancaster Roots & Blues are on the same weekend, but the MMC is Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, and luckily LRB is also on Sunday. We’ll see what kind of stamina I can muster up to power through the weekend. It will be intense to say the least, but in the end it will all be worth it! One advertiser we’ve had the past couple of months is Lurch’s Lair. Every week he puts on two shows, Friday night is the Sunday ‘Free-For-All’ and Monday is for Independent and Up-N-Coming Artists. He graciously invited me to come sit in on show on Monday, February 11th. We will be talking about the upcoming MMC, and other great artists that have come through our area. Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! The New Year began with the return of the US Bombs! The iconic punk band from Orange County, California are currently touring for their latest album ‘Road Case.’ It’s the bands first record in 12 years and was released last November. The US Bombs tour began in New Jersey last December and will finish in Phoenix, AZ on Feb 10. I was fortunate to catch two of their shows, including both Harrisburg and Pittsburgh. Legendary frontman Duane Peters was in great spirits and beyond grateful to be on stage again. The US Bombs current line-up is really great and incredibly talented. Thank you to everyone who supported the fantastic show at Club XL on January 3rd. There was more punk rock this past month with the debut of local band No-Heads at Skid Row Garage in York, PA on January 11th. An awesome night of music which also featured Olde Tigers, The Possession and Systemic Abuse. I’ve visited this continued on next page...

Disjawn, Direct Hit! and TxBxDx. Shows are sporadic but definitely worth seeking out on social media. Don’t forget February is the month for the annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg, PA. The free event is in its 23rd year and will feature over 200 artists and acts via 28 local venues. The 3-night muStevie D / U.S. Bombs sic showcase will take place February 21-23 with its headquarters at Park Inn in Mechanicsburg featuring music business panels, workshops, mentoring and trade show. NATIONAL NEWS: Grammy-winning local hard rock band Halestorm has announced a month-long North American tour, kicking off April 12th. The closest local dates are May 17-19 in Columbus, Ohio. Palaye Royale and Beasto Blanco will open for Halestorm on the run of dates, which follow the Red Lion, PA natives’ trek abroad in March with performances in Australia and Japan. Halestorm’s latest album, “Vicious” was recorded last year in Nashville and released last July via Atlantic Records. The place for the first possible Van Halen reunion concert has been revealed. Wrigley Field in Chicago on July 27th will be the first time since 1984 that the original line-up will perform together. Legendary singer David Lee Roth has previously said he knows of concerts at Fenway Park in Boston and at Yankee Stadium in New York. Original bassist Michael Anthony who hasn’t been in the band for years, claims he hasn’t heard from any of the other members; Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen and David Lee Roth, regarding a reunion. However, sources claim no one wishes to leak information on the possible reunion, a multimillion operation. The Grammys will be broadcasted February 10th on CBS. Album of the year nominees Cardi B, Kacey Musgraves, Janelle Monae and Post Malone are scheduled to perform. Kendrick Lamar is the top contender with eight nominations, followed by Drake, who is up for seven awards. Alicia Keys will host the awards for the first time and has won 15 Grammys in her career. She said in a statement, “I’m so excited to be the master of ceremonies on the biggest night in music and celebrate the creativity, power and magic.” The Who unveiled dates for a North American tour that will hit 28 cities for 29 shows. The iconic British rock band also shared plans to release their first album since 2006’s Endless Wire this year. The Moving On! Tour will feature the band joined by orchestras to realize symphonic interpretations of their

The festival will take place in Watkins Glen, New York due to capacity issues from the original location of Bethel, NY. “I was desperate to keep it in New York,” Lang stated. “I looked everywhere because I needed 1,000 acres of clear land with access and infrastructure.” Lang added that the “perfect facility” reminded him of Max Yasgur’s field, where the original Woodstock was held. This year’s festival will feature three main stages and three smaller areas. The Woodstock team estimates they’ll sell around 100,000 three-day passes. As for bands, Santana has been the only band announced. But don’t expect a retread of Woodstock’s original lineup. “It’ll be an eclectic bill, featuring hip-hop and rock and some pop and some of the legacy bands from the original festival.” The original Woodstock festival in 1969 drew more than 400,000 people. More than 84,000 have signed an online petition urging Maroon 5 to withdraw from the Super Bowl “until the league changes their policy and support players’ constitutional right to protest.” The Super Bowl will be broadcast from Atlanta on February 3rd. 23RD MILLENNIUM MUSIC CONFERENCE By Rachel Rocks
The 23rd Millennium Music Conference is coming February 21-23! The big MMC Party kicks off Thursday night as flights start to arrive and old friends reconnect, and new friends quickly become part of the gang! One of the best ways to get your networking started early is to come to the Buzz bag stuffing at 5:306pm. It’s a great time to meet some key players of the MMC and get the inside scoop. Thursday night’s kick-off party is at the Blarney’s Pub Stage right at Park Inn. I’m already excited to see three bands on Thursday night’s line up because they are
repeat MMC Performers, Kyla Mainous from Ohio, Autopilot from Saskatoon, Canada, and Single By Sunday from Glasgow, Scotland! Plus, there are two newbies, Chelsea Takami from Connecticut, and The Bad Verbs from Florida. You can see already by this one showcase of five bands, how the entertainment literally comes from all over the world! Friday morning at 11am the Trade Show is open and Registration begins. (You do need credentials to attend the Trade Show and Panels). All registered bands get credentials for their entire band, hopefully everyone plans on taking advantage of that huge perk to the MMC. I heard there is a “Day Stage” in the trade show this year, but we won’t be hosting it for the first time in quite a few years, so I’m not sure how it will work, but definitely check it out. The panels start at 1pm. There are 3-5 different panels at each time slot, so some bands take advantage of everything by dividing and conquering, and taking notes, or even just recording the sessions on their phones. Friday has a session at 1:00 titled “New Media and Marketing” I might check that one out to work on our own online presence and find out what they are telling people. Saturday’s trade show also opens at 11am, but BEWARE the sessions also start at 11:30! And there is also a keynote on the amazing venue Rock Lititz that starts at 9am, it’s streaming live from Harrisburg University!! I don’t see much sleep happening this MMC, but then again, that’s nothing new.
Friday and Saturday night gets a lot more intense. You get torn between going to 28 different venues to see over 200 amazing bands and artists! The PA Musician Staff get together and check each other’s schedules to try to spread ourselves out as much as possible, but sometimes our paths cross because we want to all be at the same party, and it is fun when we all get together and share our love of great music. All of the showcases are open to the public, and music is EVERYWHERE in Harrisburg. Even places that don’t regularly host live music, open their doors and their floors to this amazing event. I’m usually zooming from place to place and praying that they are all running on time! Luckily most of the time everyone stays on schedule and I am able to take full advantage of being a local and knowing all of the back roads to zoom from one place to the next. Maybe you are a super seasoned musician and none of the panels seem interesting to you. Do yourself a favor and still come to the Trade Show, or just come hang out and talk to people. Come sit at the bar or restaurant and interact with other musicians. I think one of the coolest things of attending any conference is we all definitely have one thing in common, we all love music!! And trust me when I say, music is everywhere.. People talking, playing, listening, and teaching all about music! I’ve heard some bands say conferences are stupid because you don’t get paid to play. If people took advantage of everything a conference has to offer, especially one like the MMC, that is big enough to get some big industry people here to Harrisburg, but yet small enough that you can actually talk to those “big” industry people, they wouldn’t complain about not getting “paid”. Plus, the MMC staff do an amazing job lining up each showcase with bands that match each other’s styles of music, trade shows with each other, if there is a way to make it out of Harrisburg or whatever town you’re stuck in, that’s the way to do it! By a show of hands, how many of you have kept your New Years resolution? It’s probably a good thing that you are reading this to yourself instead of in a room full of people, being asked this question. I read an article recently that only 77% of people keep their resolution for the first week. We all know what happens after week one. By the end of the year, only 19% kept their resolutions going, making the rest of us slackers look bad. So I choose to call them goals instead, to avoid being part of the 19%. If you have kept your resolutions so far, keep up the great work! Like resolutions, January started out promising to see shows and then mother nature came along and decided to give us some down time, like it or not. If you are in the Harrisburg area or south, you saw little to nothing but pretty much everyone north got hit with something. Here’s hoping February is kind to us and we can move along quickly to Spring! I know, but a girl can dream, right? The Que Brew Crew in Selinsgrove invited us back to check out Allan Combs II on January 5th. What a cool guy Allan is! He is a solo singer/songwriter living in the Lewisburg area. Besides being an amazing guitar player, he also has great vocals and plays harmonica. In January 2018, Allan traveled to Memphis, TN. to compete in the International Blues Challenge, Allan Combs II where he finished as a

This was held at the Greenwood High School, Millerstown. Leading the 4 schools was a guest conductor, Eric Dundore, who is a retired music educator that taught music for 35 years. He and the teachers from Greenwood, Susquenita, West Perry and Newport worked together and did an amazing job selecting the music and organizing all the details. Before each song they announced the name, originator and the meaning behind each song which made hearing the song even better. Kudos to the kids as well! The concert was outstanding and very enjoyable! Shrimp Ryan’s Jig Band On January 24th, we decided we were heading north. We stopped at The Smiling Chameleon Draft House in Lewisburg and caught a little bit of Eric Rachau a Singer/Songwriter Showcase, hosted by Jason P. Yoder. Check performing an acoustic solo show. First on stage was Humandala. They are a Harrisburg trio that blends electronic rhythms and vocal melodies to form a unique sound. I very much enjoyed hearing them play. Native Maze took the stage next. Wow! These guys were probably my personal favorite of the night. They are from the Doylestown area and have a sound that I have never heard before. Combining styles of Jam, Rock and adding a bit of Funk in the mix. The whole band was tight and showed a lot of diversity and talent. I was most impressed by the guitar-

Humandala ist and his jaw-dropping, effortless guitar skills. Love finding gems like this! Great job guys! Sun & Rain was the third band on stage. This is another great band from the Harrisburg and Lancaster areas. They have been together since late 2016 doing a mix of Funk/Rock. In less than a year, they were opening up for some national acts around Harrisburg, Philadelphia, Baltimore and West Virginia. Pretty impressive! The final band for the evening was The Mantras from Greensboro, NC. Their genre is classified as Progressive Rock/Jam. This 5 piece band have been together since 2003 and have released 6 CD’s, with the latest being in 2018 titled, ‘Be The Light’. You can find their music on Bandcamp. We have a lot national and local shows coming up including shows through Harrisburg University’s Spring 2019 Concert Series at Club XL, some at the Whitaker Center and lots of new local music to uncover. February…The doldrums of winter have totally set in. The holidays are long over, and although only arriving in recent weeks, the deluge of snow, ice and brutal cold has quickly worn out its welcome. I’m ready for my annual cabin fever cure – this month’s 23rd annual Millennium Music Conference! This year’s conference will take place Feb. 21-23 at the Park Inn by Radisson Harrisburg West in Mechanicsburg. MMC will again provide the two-day business conference, keynote speakers, the trade show, and showcase performances around the Harrisburg vicinity from nearly 300 different bands and artists. And participating Millennium bands and artists are again invited to submit recordings into my 105.9 Qwik-Rock “Homegrown Rocker” radio show drop box for airplay on the show – and one recording will again be randomly drawn at the end of the end of Saturday’s trade show, with that winner scoring an instant guest interview on a future edition of the program to air in March or April! Stop by the PA Musician table at the trade show and say hello! The recent holiday season contained its share of musical highlights. One big highlight just before Christmas was a local music celebration of Prince and his music, “Purple Princemas: A Tribute to the Music of Prince,” which took place at McGarvey’s in Altoona. With a purple ‘Princemas’ tree adorning the stage, eight area musicians – Chet Denny, Todd McKeone and Ashley Peer on vocals, Jarrett Bickel on guitar, Hunter Karns on bass, Nathan Beatty on keys, Lyndsay Reilly on saxophone and Rob Bonsell on drums – performed a mixture of Prince’s hits and deeper cuts over two sets before a packed house. These musicians dug into some of Prince’s diverse arrangements and mixes to deliver performances that were moving, captivating and inspired; you could tell these folks did their homework beforehand and were having a blast performing these tunes. Songs this night included the obvious hits such as “Let’s Get Crazy,” “Little Red Corvette,” “Raspberry Beret,” “U Got the Look,” “Kiss,” “1999,” “When Doves Cry” and “I Would Die 4 U.” They also dug a little deeper to get to other Prince gems such as “Nothing Compares 2 U,” “Diamonds and Pearls,” “Sexy MF,” “Darling Nikki,” “Electric Chair,” the Christmas number “Another Lonely Christmas” and more. When the large crowd called for the encore, the group finished up with “Purple Rain” to close the night. The performances and enthusiasm, blended with elaborate lighting and production plus a festive crowd resulted in a great show – hats off to all the performers who made it happen! Another holiday season highlight was the Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society’s Open Mic Christmas Bash, presented by the Live Music Preservation Society. Held on a Wednesday night when the Unter Uns regularly hosts their weekly Open Mic Night, this special edition saw a multitude of musicians in attendance, including a veritable who’s who of musicians from the Altoona area music scene. Members of Bone Jacked, Jampact, Flashpoint, Black Cat Moan, PennSOULvania, D.D. & the Pub Crawlers, Back In The Day, The Band OZ, Ted & Tina and more represented on the stage, as well as many of the usual cast of Wednesday musician regulars. Various configurations and collaborations yielded a nice-sounding mixture of rock’n’roll, blues, funk, jazz, pop, and even a few Christmas numbers! Coupled with some complimentary food and festive music fans, this was a great party that filled the room with music and smiles. The Unter Uns is where I bid farewell to the old year and began the new one, as D.D. & the Pub Crawlers helped ring in 2019 on New Year’s Eve. This was a fun party as the Pub Crawlers – numbering nine members this night – mixed up a lively assortment of rock, soul, funk, ska and swing flavors. It didn’t take long for folks to hit the dance floor as singer Dana “D.D.” Martino, bassist Art Martino, guitarist Matt Hunter, drummer Kevin Siegel (subbing for Todd Harshbarger), Tim Boland on keys and cowbell, and the four-piece brass attack of sax players Anthony Martino and Lyndsay Reilly, trombonist Nick Martino and trumpet player Adam Lingenfelter opened with Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ “Zoot Suit Riot,” and continued with Stray Cats’ “Rock This Town” and a feisty ska take on Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl.” The party intensified with tunes from Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Dexy’s Midnight Runners, Amy Winehouse, Peter Gabriel, Billy Joel, Aretha Franklin and more. THE PROFESSOR continued..... Dana and Nick duet on the double-shot blend of Louis Prima’s “Jump Jive an’ Wail” into The Andrews Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” the brass-rocking rendition of Kiss’ “Detroit Rock City,” Spencer Davis Group’s “Gimme Some Lovin’” into War’s “Low Rider” with Tim firing up the cowbell on the dance floor, and – leading up to the midnight deluge of confetti, noisemakers and champagne toasts – Jean Knight’s “Mr. Big Stuff” and Dusty Springfield’s “Son of a Preacher Man.” Then a surprise when the group launched their third set, as they delivered a brassy rendition of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper,” triggering the homestretch run as the group closed out the night with tunes from Led Zeppelin, James Brown, Wilson Pickett, Katrina & the Waves, and Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s “You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three Tonight” to cap the festivities. These guys and gals were nonstop fun, changing up the music and keeping it lively from start to end. Smiles were ever-present on the stage, and the Pub Crawlers’ joy and enthusiasm sparked the crowd, making the entire house part of this party! This show provided a great start to 2019, and the Pub Crawlers are already on the books to ring in New Year 2020 at the Unter Uns next New Year’s Eve! On the second day of 2019, renowned Southern California punk rockers U.S. Bombs, whose career spans more than a quarter century, headlined McGarvey’s first show of 2019, along with guest bands X’s For Eyes and Total Chaos. Another obligation prevented me from seeing X’s For Eyes and Total Chaos, but I arrived shortly into the U.S. Bombs’ set. The U.S. Bombs delivered powerful, spit-and-vinegar old-school punk rock, rooted in the classic British punk traditions of the Sex Pistols and The Clash. Founding member and frontman Duane Peters, along with guitarists Brandon Meunier and Dave Barbee, bassist Steve Davis and drummer Phil Barber tore through their set of tunes, with Duane frequently addressing the crowd and repeating themes of solidarity and unity. Some of the U.S. Bombs’ tunes this night included “We Are the Problem,” “Red Lights” and “Goin’ Out.” The packed house roared approval for the group, generated several moshpits along the way and had a feverish good time.
PA Pantera specialists Penntera braved the snowy elements to scorch the oxides off the walls of McGarvey’s last month. Maul opened the night, before Penntera unleashed their vulgar display of Pantera firepower upon an appreciative, turbulent audience. Frontman Jason Robison, guitarist Pat Bowser, bassist Zack Arthur and drummer Eric “Space” Dengler tore through the Pantera catalog, doing classics such as “Mouth of War,” “Slaughtered,” the night-ending requests for “Cemetery Gates” and “Cowboys from Hell,” and more. Jason, Pat and Zack provided constant action on the stage, and frequently brought their performance out to the fans on the floor, with Space’s booming drum thunder detonating behind it all. Later in the show, Naildriver frontman Matt Watson helped snarl out vocals on a couple of numbers. What I caught of Penntera’s show was excellent, a point unanimously agreed upon by the crowd of metal fans that braved the wintry road conditions to attend. I caught up with Lowjack in late December as they played to a pre-Christmas Saturday night crowd at the Phyrst in State College. Even with most of the student populace out of town for the holidays, Lowjack quickly had a good-sized crowd in the house and partying down as they performed a blend of rocking favorites. Lowjack showed instrumental versatility – Jason Davoli switched between bass and acoustic guitar, while Daniel Collins moved back and forth between electric guitar and violin. Jason, Daniel, keyboardist Joe Tombasco and drummer Steve Archer shared singing duties along the way. Lowjack mixed it up between old and new, doing classics from CCR, the Beatles, Tom Petty, Toto, Billy Joel, Ben E. King, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Charlie Daniels Band and more, as well as more modern fare from Modest Mouse, Weezer, LMFAO, Third Eye Blind and more. They also broke out one Christmas song, a rock’n’roll sing-along take on “Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer,” as well as Dropkick Murphys’ “I’m Shipping Up to Boston.” And then there was the ‘feats of strength’ display, where Jason fed Daniel a bottle of brew while the latter fiddled for broke on Dave Matthews Band’s “Ants Marching.” It all amounted to a fun show that kept folks in front of the stage, dancing and grooving for the entire night. Lowjack performs every Saturday night at the Phyrst, and every Friday night at State College’s Brewery.
Also during holiday season, I checked out Asbury Lane with guest Jack Coyle as they entertained a busy crowd at Altoona’s Railroad City Brewing Company. This was a pleasant show, as singer Tami Hinish, singer/guitarist Jeremy Schimansky and Jack on harmonicas blended folk, pop and other classics. They did numbers from CCR, John Denver, Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Old Crow Medicine Show, as well as copious amounts of John Prine tunes. My favorite highlight this night was their take on Fleetwood Mac’s “Landslide” – Tami’s voice here was incredible! Asbury Lane broke out a few surprises too, such as their folksy read of A-ha’s “Take On Me,” and their gospel folk double-shot of “Will the Circle Be Unbroken” and “I’ll Fly Away.” Coupled with happy vibes from a festive crowd (including two birthdays in the house) and tasty craft brews from the venue, this performance amounted to a pleasant experience. Following that show, I headed to McGarvey’s to catch up with busy acoustic pair Ed N’Born. Ed Hofer on the percussion and Sean “Born” Osborn on vocals and acoustic guitar entertained a happy group of patrons and dart throwers with a wide mixture of tunes, performing numbers from the Rolling Stones, Sublime, Dave Matthews Band, Radiohead, Blind Melon, Staind, Eve 6, Foo Fighters, Weezer and many more. I liked their song unpredictability, as you didn’t know where the musical adventure continued on page 18

THE PROFESSOR continued..... would go next, whether from Radiohead’s “Creep” into Tears For Fears’ “Shout,” Eve 6’s “Inside Out” into Hootie & the Blowfish’s “Hold My Hand,” or the ending combo of Smashmouth’s “All Star” into Semisonic’s “Closing Time.” One of the first new bands I saw in the New Year was western PA-based alternative rockers Dive as they performed last month at Ebensburg’s Castle Pub. Singer and songwriter Alyssa Hankey opened the evening. Although I arrived late and only got to see her last two songs, I was impressed with what I heard as Alyssa applied her bold singing style and inventive arrangements to versions of Fleetwood Mac’s “Dreams” and Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit.” Afterward, Dive impressed with their set of original hard-hitting alternative rock. Singer Michael Kinley, lead guitarist Mike Jubas, rhythm guitarist Mitch Leach, bassist Devin Hagens and drummer Luke Brancato delivered a tight, sharp, hard-edged sound flavored with grunge and modern progressive elements. Their melodies were sturdy, and Dive used varying tones and effects to shape and mold each number. Some of their songs this night included “Runaway” off their debut EP When The Sun Hides and a newer number, “Letters,” which the group ended the night with after the audience called for an encore. Dive plans to head into a New Jersey studio next month to record a new EP, and anticipates releasing that EP in early summer. Another newer area group that continues to gain momentum in the New Year is Hollidaysburg’s From Down the Road, who I checked in with early last month at McGarvey’s. I’m liking this group’s progress – they displayed versatility on several fronts this night, mixing a variety of musical flavors both in their cover song selection and in their evolving original song arsenal, and they also showed instrumental versatility as they swapped instruments at one point. In front of an appreciative group of onlookers, singer Guy Mauro, lead guitarist Ben Eberhart, bassist Eric Baker and drummer Tyler McEvoy mixed up tunes from Black Sabbath, Weezer, Nirvana, Blink 182, Metallica, Black Keys, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Portugal.The Man, The Cars, Modest Mouse and more. They did several of their original songs, and each had its own distinctive blend of styles and catchy melodies. “Take It From Me” especially stood out to me

with its infectious hook and fresh-sounding blend of jazz, pop and rock flavors. From Down the Road continues to write new songs and plans more recording; keep an eye open for this group and their fresh, freewheeling approach to music. Oak Spring Winery near Altoona frequently features their “Friday Wine Down” event, where visitors can sample their wine products while enjoying live acoustic music. Ride the Song performed during the “Friday Wine Down” I attended last month. As I sipped Oak Spring’s blackberry wine, singer/guitarist Tim McMillen, mandolin player/singer Kevin Steiner, guitarist/ singer Jeremy Jack and Bob Baronner on fiddle mixed folksy rock and country classics with original songs. They mixed up well-known numbers with a few back-of-the-rack gems, such as New Riders of the Purple Sage’s “Dirty Business” and Little Big Town’s “Shut Up Train.” They also applied their own unique arrangements to numbers from Guy Clark, Buffalo Springfield, Marshall Tucker Band, the Eagles, Charlie Daniels, their original song “Oak Spring Winery Blues” and more. Ride the Song’s presentation was laid back and casual, and they had fun and connected with the audience along the way. They inspired some young dancers, drew cheers on each song, and generated smiles from throughout the room. Stormy again provided a fun evening of music during their January performance at the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg. The
Purple Princemas (Tribute to the music of Prince) group delivered a tasty variety of classic rock, pop, folk and blues, including a lot of tunes you don’t often hear performed on area stages. After opening with the Classics IV’s hit song bearing their band name, the Stormy cast of Mark Montrella on lead vocals and harmonica, guitarist Brandon Stewart, keyboardist Charlie Leiden and drummer Ray Fedeli embarked on a wide range of numbers, including tunes from the Eagles, Badfinger, Neil Young, Steely Dan, CCR, Van Morrison, Collective Soul, B.B. King, the Byrds, Beatles, Santana and more. Some of the pleasant surprises the group broke out this night included versions of America’s “Daisy Jane” and “Lonely People,” Phil Collins’ “Another Day in Paradise,” Traffic’s “Low Spark of HighHeeled Boys,” Todd Rundgren’s “I Saw the Light,” Paul Simon’s “50 Ways to Leave Your Lover,” Bruce Hornsby & the Range’s “The Way It Is,” and the night-closing Beatles double-shot of “Let It Be” and “Lady Madonna.” Other highlights included Ray’s wife, Carol, stepping up to sing lead on tunes from Patsy Cline, John Prine, Carole King, Linda Ronstadt and Fleetwood Mac; and Brandon growling out the lead voice on Tom Waits’ “Heart Attack and Vine.” It all sounded fine, from Mark’s solid voice and harmonica accents to Charlie’s swirling keyboard fills to Brandon’s clean guitar solo work to Ray’s steady rhythms behind the kit. The U.S. Hotel dinner crowd enjoyed it, and many stuck around for the duration of the show. Stormy returns to the U.S. Hotel on February 2. Christened last summer, Hagen’s Irish Pub in Chest Springs has begun to feature some live music, and I paid my first visit there last month to see Rick Ramsey and Ben Frick – Disorganized Crime – as they generated acoustic musical fun with several esteemed music scene guests. Rick on the vocals and acoustic six-string and Ben on cajon generated smiles and grooving as they did a wide variety of tunes, spanning Motley Crue’s “Home Sweet Home” to the Doors double-shot of “20th Century Fox” into “Peace Frog,” plus numbers from The Flys, Pearl Jam, Buffalo Springfield, Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash and much more. As mentioned, guests were a big part of the fun, as Negan frontman Mike Davis sang lead and even strummed the acoustic guitar on tunes from Stone Temple Pilots, Hootie & the Blowfish, Live, Tom Petty and others. Singers Mellissa Vella and Alicia Hritsko chimed in to sing on some tunes, and Ed Hofer of Ed N’Born and Nag Champions contributed percussions, backing vocals and other sounds to the fun. It was a good time that had the house happy and howling.

U.S. Bombs And I caught another installment of Greenbean Coffee House’s weekly Thursday Open Stage event last month. I arrived in time to catch some of the performance by this week’s spotlighted artists, the mother-and-daughter duo of Michelle and Shannon Barnes, as they closed their set with acoustic takes on Green Day’s “Holiday,” Counting Crows’ “Mr. Jones,” and for their encore, 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up.” Among the evening’s other performers were singer and songwriter Carson Long, singer/ guitarist Karl Rieger with tunes from Robin Lane & the Chartbusters and Elvis Costello, the acoustic stylings of Kevin Gallopin as he did three of his acoustic instrumental originals, “A Not So Distant Train,” “Leap of Faith” and “Grateful,” plus several other participants. Open Stage host Garrison Bailey closed out the night with her vocal performance of Martina McBride’s “Broken Wing.” Attendance was brisk this night, especially early, and all the performers were greeted with supportive, enthusiastic applause. And Greenbean’s mocha was again great! News and notes…Images Of Eden, featuring York’s Gordon Tittsworth on lead vocals and rhythm guitar, is joining Metal Church and Doro on a five-week, 21-show U.S. tour beginning in April; Images Of Eden is touring in support of their latest CD, Soulrise…Both drummer Justin Landers and keyboardist/mandolin player George Hilf recently parted ways with the Derek Woods Band; the departure was friendly, and the group has announced Chris Belen as their new drummer…Bedford County rock’n’rollers Borrowed Time are parting ways after March; singers/guitarists Mike Clapper and Chad Patterson will move on to new endeavors…Founding member and bassist John Matthews is leaving State College favorites Velveeta as he completes his schooling and moves on to a new career; Adam Becker takes over his spot in the Velveeta roster…The Chrome Hearts, who were featured on the cover of our October issue, recently changed their name to Stephanie & the Wild Hearts…Bedford County metal rockers Paradigm are releasing their second CD, Monolith; their official CD release will happen February 19 at Pittsburgh’s Hard Rock Café as they open for Flaw…Elaini Arthur has released her new single, “Sweet Kisses”…And at press time, Lock Haven’s Chris LaRose and Williamsport’s Gabe Stillman Band – both representing the Billtown Blues Association – had both advanced to the semifinals of the 35th annual International Blues Challenge in Memphis. IMAGES OF EDEN – SOULRISE (Pavement Entertainment) York-based musician Gordon Tittsworth founded Images Of Eden two decades ago, and has steadily raised the bar on his musical vision through four full-length albums. The latest, Soulrise, presents a riveting blend of power and progressive metal elements, carrying fast-moving, detailed melodies and lyrical messages of spirituality, hope and survival. The current Images Of Eden cast – Gordon on vocals and rhythm guitar, lead guitarist Carlos Urquidi Perez, keyboardist L. Dean Harris, bassist Eric Mulvaine and drummer Steve Dorssom – generate leviathan metal thunder and dynamic arrangements through the disc’s dozen tracks. Rigid, pulsating rhythms, snarling guitars and rapid fire percussion bursts juxtapose alongside ethereal keyboard and acoustic passages; with Gordon’s soaring, commanding voice, layered vocal choruses and dialogues riding atop it all. The overall sound again recalls the aggressive edges of Queensryche and Fates Warning, but the design and direction of the songwriting is clearly Images Of Eden’s own. Gordon’s lyrics weave a theme of conversations between the mind, soul and a guiding force, building toward an eventual release from the mortal coil. Setting the album’s tone, the explosive “Harvest Day” assures a tortured soul that each day plants the seeds of hope, while “Let Me Die Young” offers encouragement against life’s burdens; and inspired by addiction, “Shield Me” pleads for hope while battling personal demons. The angry and aggressive “Godless” addresses religious hypocrisy, while the gentler key and acoustic-geared “Moonrise” of-
fers rays of hope. Later in the album, the anguished protagonist gets his spiritual house in order with reassurances from the guiding force on such numbers as “All Is Now Forgiven,” ”Waiting for the Sky to Fall” and “And Then There Was One,” before the title track finale “Soulrise” reunites the healed soul with others that have risen before it. The performances are tight, forceful and busy, as all five players execute with machine-like accuracy. Gordon sings his parts with passion and tenacity, investing full soul into his performance. Mixed and mastered by Bill Metoyer and produced by Gordon and Steve, Soulrise sounds rock solid, sharp and balanced, with all elements sounding clear and prominent. poetically musing about inspiration, anticipation and creativity. The catchy title song “Like a Gorilla” follows a percussive, playful vibe, while “Boogie Woogie Saturday Night’ gearshifts from a nightclub lounge vibe into a rollicking, swinging jam. The punchy “40th Street” captures a Tin Pan Alley-inspired jazz-blues flavor, while the disc-finishing “Your Rhapsody” rides a spiritual-like melody and arrangement. A late 1960s psychedelic rock flavor underscores Bryan’s cosmic-themed spoken word passages on “Can You Feel,” while “Spirit Inside” taps into a dreamy, John Lennon-informed mood. CD REVIEWS continued..... On The Radio began making their mark on western PA stages in 2014 with their fierce brand of extreme, punk-tinged power metal. Their debut EP, New Murders, Old Crows, demonstrates their ferocity and intensity over five tracks, mixing elements of thrash, power, black metal and punk. Frontman and guitarist Jason Straw, guitarist Jay Snyder, bassist Greg Hatch and drummer Jason “Kirch” Kirchner construct walls of brutal metal sound, with roaring riffs, searing solos, hammering rhythms and in-your-face vocal savagery. Consistent with the group’s name, Darkness On The Radio explores the dark side of the human psyche, especially how evil manifests itself through hatred, corruption and power run amok. As he did with his lyrics in The Embalmed, Jason Straw utilizes wordplays and metaphor to push the brink between good and evil, often establishing crows and snakes as symbols. The opening onslaught and title track, “New Murders, Old Crows” describes evil’s constant presence through mankind’s history, as Jason Straw hisses a
warning of the presence of “snakes” among us, and evil raising its head. The rampaging “Judas Take the Wheel” explores how evil gets the upper hand through temptation and greed. The thrash-fest “Sons ov Devilry” establishes malicious strength in numbers, while the agitated “Shallow or Six Feet” warns listeners to be careful where they step. The disc-closer “The Snakes That Walk Like Men (Familia Satanas)” returns to the theme of evil walking among and pushing mankind toward the brink, following a deeper, more-involved arrangement. Darkness On The Radio delivers their material with appropriate firepower and savagery, and their intensity remains constant from start to end. Jason Straw delivers the convincingly sinister, feral and punkedged snarl to convey his words. The overall production and mix sound thunderous, balanced and jagged, capturing the essence of this band’s energy and allowing their jagged metal edge to rip and tear clearly. New Murders, Old Crows packs a sonic punch to the jaw and provides a forceful introduction to Darkness On The Radio’s evolving brand of metal brutality. BILL FERRELL – VARIOUS NOTES AT VARIOUS INTERVALS (no label) Longtime central PA musician Bill Ferrell has played guitar in several bands over the years, including Kyx and
One Less Tear, and released an initial 2006 solo CD, A Biker’s Prayer. Bill now performs acoustically and has honed his fingerstyle guitar-playing talents, which he demonstrates on his latest all-instrumental album, Various Notes at Various Intervals. Through 11 tracks, Bill uses his guitar tal-
ents to weave acoustic tapestries that evoke various moods and themes. The songs are all authentic, single stereo track recordings with no layering, which further showcases Bill’s talents and attention to detail. Bill displays quite a variety here; showing a Mexican/Latin flair on “Un Baile Con El Diablo,” evoking steam engine furvor on “Fast Train to Hell,” and dabbling in Native American tribal tones on the catchy “Tomahawk.” Other compositions have local and personal ties; “Smoke Run Blues” is a folksy ode to Bill’s home turf, and the tranquil tones of “Oak Spring Serenade” suggest pleasant wine-tasting music at a local winery where you can see Bill perform. The disc’s final track, “Wendel’s Blues,” is a respectful homage to an area musical contemporary, the late Wendel Hullihen. Bill explores European folk tones with “Velada Romantica,” and fuses together distinctive takes on two gospel canons with “Amazing Grace/Will the Circle Be Unbroken.” Bill’s performances are masterful, inspired and smoothly executed. The album sounds clear and full, allowing the depth and artistry of Bill’s guitar tones, skills and eloquent artistry shine through. For fans of skillful acoustic music, Bill Ferrell’s Various Notes at Various Intervals offers a pleasant, relaxing listen.
