PA MUSICIAN MAGAZINE 178 ANDY STROUP RD LIVERPOOL, PA 17045 717-636-4203 CALL TODAY FOR INFO OR ADVERTISING DEADLINE THE 20TH OF EACH PRECEDING MONTH.

Hello and welcome back to another issue of the PA Musician Magazine. We are going full green and are back to printing the paper this month. That means that along with the online issue, you will once again be able to pick up a copy of the paper at your favorite venue or music store. I am super excited to be able to get back out and deliver the paper to the masses. I would like to thank everyone for supporting us through these hard times. Without the support of the local music community we would not exist. With most counties going to green, live shows started popping up once again. The first chance I got to check out some live action was out at JP Edwards Grill & Bar in Lewistown. Ed Varner was up for the task of performing for the anxious crowd that had gathered at JP’s. When we got there the outside seating was pretty much filled up and Ed was already jamming out on the patio. We grabbed what seating was left and ordered some food. Ed does a great job of performing to the crowd and I was told he was put on restraint and forced to “social distance” at this show. With instructions to stay in one place Ed still did a great job at keeping the crowd entertained and involved with his show. With tunes from Tom Petty to Prince and everything in between, Ed keeps his set list spontaneous as he draws from his vast knowledge of catchy songs that everyone can relate too. We were also treated to a special performance from Ed’s granddaughter, who stole the show and the hearts of everyone watching. JP Edwards is well worth checking out and is always a stop for us on our way home from our adventures at Raystown or Rothrock State Forest. Nothing quite like some cold beer, great food and live music after a long day out on the trail. If you are in the area please go check them out and tell them the PA Musician Mag sent you. With everything going on in the world, live music is needed more now then ever. Nothing will take your mind off the mess this country is in better then getting out and seeing some live action. Lots of places are offering acoustic outside music so you can still social distance but also feel like you’re a human again, and able to interact with others. The Eagle Hotel in Fredericksburg has a full list of events for July so go check out the schedule and make some plans to attend. as many live events as possible. They have always supported local music and are preparing to go green on Friday July 3rd. So along with outside dining you will soon be able to beat the heat and enjoy dining in the A/C. They also appreciated all the people that ordered take out during the lock down, it kept them going. Coming up on August 8th will be their Customer Appreciation Bash just to let you know how much they do appreciate their customers and all those that kept them going.

The Racehorse Tavern in Thomasville has just announced the return of full bands starting mid July. They have already upped their game by booking a bunch of acoustic acts for the patio and now plan to return to the inside stage soon. You can check them out on facebook for updates and I also recommend downloading the Racehorse app on your smart phone to keep up to date with what they are offering. Penntera has been hiding for far too long and have decided to throw an outdoor event dubbed “The Weekend Mountain Party”. It will take place at a “friends” house in Gardner PA and EVERYONE IS INVITED!! With claims of a giant property with plenty of room for camping, they are not messing around. People are encouraged to bring there own food/chairs/flashlights/beverage of choice as this is a BYOB event. Dead Centre will kick things off at 4pm with Penntera following at around 7pm. You can find the address in Penntera’s ad in this issue so get out there and party with your friends and enjoy the Weekend Mountain Party. With all the cancellations being announced let’s all be sure to get out and support the events that are still happening. One event that is keeping the music alive is Bands At Gettysburg 2020. With a heavy hitting list of bands consisting of The Backseat Hooligans, Coal, Day Drinkers, Hollow Rhymes, Hott Mess, Old Weed, Jinokoya, Rebel Soul, Signal 13 and SinYstr this is one you don’t want to miss. Ticket proceeds are being donated to The Adams County Children’s Advocacy Center so get out and enjoy the live music and support a good cause all for just 10 bucks. Tickets are available at Eventbrite. Well that’s it for this month let’s all do our part and start enjoying this great summer weather. Before you know it old man winter will be here and the summer of 2020 will be a distant memory. Take care, stay healthy and be kind and courteous to your fellow humans.

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks

Green! Green is not quite the green light we all expected, but at least we are moving forward. It’s interesting to see how every person, band, business, etc. is doing their own thing, but I’m just glad to finally be able to get together with family and friends, and to hear live music again! The first night out I was so excited to go bar hopping again. There was so much live music everywhere! I started out early by heading to Home Slice on Walden for Derek Henry. Home Slice is located in a “suburb” of Mechanicsburg, it is literally the main street of a development, Walden Way, that has everything you possibly need: pizza, dog grooming, a full restaurant, art gallery, restaurant, winery, etc. We ordered take-out pizza from Home Slice that was delicious! We also walked down the street to Spring Gate on Walden for wine slushies and beer. Then we sat on a bench and listened to Derek. After so many Thursday night live streams it was so refreshing to hear him live and in person! It’s so great to see his schedule filling up again. Don’t forget to check out his ad in this issue to get him booked at your venue or private party. After Derek I headed down to the Racehorse Tavern for Grant Bryan and Sarah Sheriff live on the patio! Grant and Sarah were in full swing, singing all of your country favorites mixed in with some fantastic originals! I’m happy to say Grant even played my personal fave, Lee Brice! I’ve heard a lot about Grant, I’m so glad I finally got the chance to hear him play. It seems like the

“guidelines” or rules are constantly changing, and I’m impressed at how quickly the businesses have been adapting. In just a matter of a week after Jim found out they could serve food and drinks outside on the patio, him and his staff moved very quickly, they purchased more tables to be able to extend their patio within Social Distancing parameters. He also used the base of a shed he had and quickly constructed a full bar. It wasn’t a perfect bar situation, so super kudos to the Racehorse Staff that did what they had to do to make it all work. Jim also managed to get acoustic acts scheduled all weekend, because of course, the Racehorse is going to have live music. Missy Jo from Mad Hatter Entertainment jumped at the opportunity to book shows again, and quickly helped Jim get some great acts lined up for not only this weekend, but every weekend. I’ve heard a lot of good things about Mad Hatter Entertainment, if you need bands for your venue, or if you are a band looking for a show, reach out to Missy Jo, and she will help you out. Check out the Mad Hatter Entertainment ad in this issue for more details. My 3rd and final stop of the night was at Flinchy’s in Camp Hill for a solo performance by Joey Dalto. Joey just released his first solo single on June 5th, “Miss Lonely”. If you haven’t checked it out, you really should! At this show I was also able to snag a copy of his Full Album, “All For You”. It will officially be released on July 5th, with hopefully, the big CD Release Party in August at XL Live! More details to follow soon. When I listed to “All For You” I was honestly impressed that I didn’t reach for the skip button on a single song. Every song is unique and interesting and has a great story! I usually only like 2-3 songs on an album, so the fact that I could listen and enjoy all 10 songs is impressive! You can catch Joey performing solo, with The Swisher Sweets, or The Famous. I received an invite to a Private Party where Road Case and Back in Black were playing, and I have to say I was a bit ecstatic!! Unfortunately to have full bands back in all of their glory, the only way to make that possible for a while is a private show. It was actually a private party that they have every year to honor the 1st Responders. It was very awesome and well attended and an absolutely great idea! I heard they literally sent a letter to Gov. Wolf asking for permission to still host the party and he said, “Go for it!” so they did. I got there just in the nick of time to catch the

tail end of Road Case. Since Road Case was the last full band I saw live at Johnny Joe’s it only seemed fitting that they would be the 1st full band show after the pandemic too! It was good to hear the guys didn’t miss a beat, and they were ready to rock and entertain the masses as much as we were ready to hear them!! It was awesome to see people up dancing and having a great time. They switched things up with the 2nd band it was the Janelle Verones Band. They are definitely a variety band covering all genres of music: funk, pop, jazz, classic rock, alternative, etc. They made sure they got people up dancing and having a good time. Janelle has one heck of a voice, it was amazing all of the different artists she could cover. The last band of the night was the very muchly missed, Back in Black! I haven’t seen these guys play in forever, so it was awesome to see and hear them again! To be able to hear Tony yell, “SOCIAL” and watch everyone salute was super awesome!! After such a long hiatus I was impressed with how much Angus, aka Dan, was able to still run, jump, dance, and play the night away.. When you see him off stage he seems so calm, I guess he’s just storing it all up for the stage! It was also super cool to see Aaron Zimmerman from Sonic Productions running the sound and lights. He helped put on one heck of a show. If you need production for your show or special event, check out Sonic Productions ad in this issue for all of the details. The next night there was a special Sunday afternoon show at the Fredericksburg Eagle Hotel with DMC Duo. I watched a couple of their Facebook Live shows, but again it’s so much better seeing people perform in person. The live streams were definitely an awesome way to keep the music reaching our ears, but hopefully live music never reverts back to that. DMC Duo sings a variety of acoustic rock, pop, and country. Marisa does most of the singing, but it’s nice that Darrell can give her a break once in a while too. They are definitely a band that makes you want to get up and dance, but with the current no dance rule, we were all stuck doing the hand jive instead. I also have to mention the amazingly delicious food at the Eagle Hotel. They have crazy amazing specials and are doing take out and outdoor dining for right now. Hopefully in the next couple of weeks we will be able to eat inside too! Make sure and check out the Eagle Hotel’s ad in this issue for their upcoming entertainment and specials. continued on next pg..

Out & About continued....

The one problem with outdoor dining and entertainment is weather… The following Friday night was a stormy one. Many acoustic acts were canceled, but as I was cruising Facebook I saw that at Champions in Highspire they relocated Olivia Farabaugh inside, so I zoomed out there to hear some more live music. With their garage door walls inside is practically just like outside at Champions, and even though there were storms earlier in the evening, later it was absolutely gorgeous. You can’t help but smile at Olivia show, her smile just lights up the room, and it must be contagious. Her voice is just beautiful and she sings everything so effortlessly. Her original music is amazing too! Check her out if you haven’t already… The final band of the month was The Juice at Midway Bowling Alley. I have to admit, even though I love The Juice, I was a little bummed to be going to Midway, I didn’t know what to expect, but most people said it was old and ran down.. Let me tell you, those people don’t know what they are talking about. Midway has done some major renovations and it is absolutely amazing, inside and out! Outside they have an gorgeous privacy fenced in patio area. The patio area is HUGE with several sitting areas with Adirondack Chairs, Couches, etc.. some around fire pits, tables, etc. It was a variety of seating for whatever makes you comfortable. Obviously, this isn’t a big secret because they had a fabulous crowd! It is definitely the nicest outside seating area I’ve seen anywhere in Cumberland County, and probably Dauphin County too! The patio Marissa of DMC Duo is so nice, there is no smoking on the patio either. Smokers have to go completely outside. Even the bowling alley seemed upgraded with nice flat screen TVs, nice pool tables, foose ball, etc. They definitely are drawing in the college crowd, but there was a good mix of us “older folks” there too. They have crazy drink specials and even have some of their own special whiskeys that they made. Even though my toes were in some sand, the band themselves had a nice large cemented area. It wasn’t covered, but luckily for them, it was a beautiful night. I’ve seen The Juice a few times the last few years, and it’s crazy to see how they’ve grown as a band just in the past 2 years. They also cover a wide range of songs that people couldn’t resist and I did see a couple people dancing! The dance area was big enough that you were still able to “social distance”. I was definitely impressed, I’ve heard they have bands Friday and Saturdays and acoustic acts for brunch on Sundays! Check it out!! WOW! It feels so good to be back, and so good to write a “normal” article!! Thank you so much to all of the bands and businesses that continued to support us during this wacky time! I know the online issue wasn’t ideal, but at least we kept the word out there about our amazing PA Musicians. Don’t forget if you were ever excited to see one of us: Me, Jim, Chris, Josh, Eric, etc.. show up at your show, or even if you wish we did.. PLEASE Advertise!! We are only here because we are supported by the ads in this magazine.. Without our faithful advertisers we wouldn’t be!! If you would like to talk about advertising feel free to give Josh a call, 717-636-4203, or throw me and email: RachelRocks@ pamusician.net. I hope to see you Out and About, and when you do please say Hi! I’m still hugging people, so if you don’t want a hug.. WATCH OUT!! Greeting Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Concerts and mass gatherings continue to be on hold as the world slowly begins to reopen with precautions to the Coronavirus pandemic. However, notable bands/artists have released new albums including: Bob Dylan (Rough and Rowdy Ways) his first new studio release in eight years. Neil Young (Homegrown) previously unreleased album from 1975 but was cancelled. Lady Gaga (Chromatica) her sixth full-length studio release. Danzig (Sings Elvis) the punk singer covers Elvis’s popular songs. The Strokes (The New Abnormal) their first new studio release in seven years. Pearl Jam (Gigaton) their first studio release in nearly seven years. The Sounds (The Things We Do For Love) the Swedish indie rock band’s sixth studio release. Wyldlife (Year of the Snake) the punk/garage band’s fourth full-length album. The guitar Kurt Cobain played during his famous performance on “MTV Unplugged” in 1993 sold for a shocking $6 million at auction. The 1959 Martin D-18E guitar has become a coveted item and the subject of a lengthy court battle. The purchaser Peter Freedman, a businessman from Australia, set multiple records with the acquisition. He now is the owner of the Most Expensive Guitar, Most Expensive Memorabilia, World’s Most Expensive Acoustic Guitar, and World’s Most Expensive Nirvana Memorabilia Sold at Auction. The album, MTV Unplugged in New York, became all the more significant when just five months after the set, the musician took his own life.

One example shows a Rhythm & Vines festival selling 90% of its 20,000 ticket allocation for late December. Grammy-winning country group Lady Antebellum is changing its name to Lady A, with members saying they are regretful and embarrassed for not taking into consideration the word’s as-

sociations with slavery. The band said that they chose the name after the antebellum style home where they shot their first band photos, and it reminded them of Southern styles of music. Antebellum means before a war and the term has been widely associated with the pre-Civil War period in the United States when slavery was practiced. Lady Antebellum’s career spans the past 14 years and are most recognized for their Grammy-winning No. 1 country hit “I Run To You.” The band said it is deeply sorry for the hurt this has caused and for anyone who felt unsafe, unseen or unvalued. Country superstar Garth Brooks brought a one-night drive-in concert event to 300 drive-in theatres across North America on June 27, with tickets for the “social distance party” selling for $100/per vehicle. Brooks stated, “They’re going to run it just like a regular concert, but this is going to be all over North America, one night only. RIDER’S ON THE STORM By Chris Rider

So here we are, 3 months into the Covid 19 Apocalypse, and things are starting to slowly open up. We all know by now how much a mess it has made of everything, including the music scene. I, like many people have watched live stream after live stream to try to support the musicians as best I can during all of this. To all of you out there playing live streams and doing anything you can to keep your music going, just know that I and everyone here at PA Musician appreciates you and all of your hard work. Shortly before writing this article, we started going to “Green” which allowed smaller, mostly solo acoustic shows to ramp up so that’s what I’ve been able to cover with one exception. Definitely not the number of shows I’d been used to covering in a month’s time, so this article will be shorter than the norm...but I can’t even begin to express how much I’ve missed experiencing live music and hope to see it expand quickly & safely. I’ve even missed writing :) So, to start things off, the first act I was lucky to cover was actually before the local counties started going “green” and letting people come out to enjoy live music. My friends up at Isle Of Que brewing in Selinsgrove (have I mentioned that their Animal 54 is just outstanding? I might have...) invited me up to cover their first live stream event. Jason Yoder started things off with his unique blend of covers and originals. Jason’s been in this article before,

Jason Yoder maybe a few times...I love getting to see how musicians progress over time, adding new music to their list, improving their skills, continued on page 15...

White Witch… Keeping the Dream Alive

By Rachel Rocks White Witch didn’t let the crazy pandemic stop them, they were busy, recording and releasing their 4th CD, “Hell is Doomed” which was just released on June 27th. A week earlier they released their first single off the album, “Underneath the Lights”. This song was a great choice for the early release, it is a song about inspiration and proving that White Witch and their songs are part of God’s dream. You can pick up copies of their new album at Sonic Ascension Records in Montoursville, Robert M. Sides in Williamsport, K&S Music in South Williamsport, and all of the Gallery of Sound locations in NEPA. For all of the people that prefer to stream their music, it’s also available on CD Baby, Amazon, iTunes and Spotify. White Witch has been together for 35 years! That is definitely not an easy feat, and when I asked lead singer, Jeff Pittinger, what’s the secret to staying together so long, his answer, “loyalty, respect, and trust, plus it helps that I am the most determined, dedicated, and driven lead singer I know of!” Jeff considers himself blessed to still have two other original members in the band, Doug Lehman on lead guitar, and Carl Berry on drums. For the CD they also added in Jimmy Lovcik on bass guitar. Jeff wanted to mention their original bass player, George Warner, aka Jack Death, who not only helped get this band started, but also helped them with writing a lot of their songs. They’ve also been lucky to have Bret Alexander play his B-3 organ on “The Seed” which was on their self-titled album, “White Witch.” As an original band that only throws in a Doug Lehman couple of stellar cover songs here and there, they are of course, always writing. Doug and Jeff work together to come up with the music and the lyrics to all of their songs. Sometimes they can’t physically be together to hammer out ideas, but they don’t mess with all of the newest technology, they like to go old school and they still record tracks on CDs, and send them through the mail for the other one to hear and add to it. It might take some extra time, but Rome wasn’t built in a day and neither was White Witch! White Witch has always had the philosophy “Never Dies the Dream”… when they were putting together this last album, “Hell is Doomed,” out of the blue, they got a call from the owner of Heaven and Hell Records offering them a deal. It seemed like a match made in heaven.. and they signed the deal and they were able to get this new album mastered and off to the press a lot faster than they could’ve possibly done on their own. After they signed the deal, they couldn’t help but to reflect on how far they’ve come since the beginning in 1984. They’ve had to overcome a lot of things to get to where they are today. They are just so happy to be alive and well in this day and age, and in this music scene, and they are just proud to be part of God’s dream. July, 2020

In their 35 years they’ve played well over 500 shows, but no one could’ve ever imagined how badly this virus thing messed up bands’ shows, and ultimately their livelihood. Jeff luckily has another business that kept him busy during the pandemic, he is also the owner and producer of Pennsylvania Pipeline Music-TV. They film the best original bands and music from and around the tri-state area and edit the songs and interviews into episodes for social media and TV. If he’s able to get enough bands and film by the Fall, he has the opportunity to have his show on two major TV stations here in PA, WYLN in Hazleton, and WHVL in State College. He is extremely grateful to Jeff Bonomo at WYLN and Penny Hain at WHVL for believing in him. He is currently working

on recording Season 5. They currently have 3 concerts and filming events coming up: Saturday, July 25th wit Callie E. Tomblin, Mallory Scoppa Gardner, Leo & KG with Family Tradition and Black Rose Thorn; Saturday, August 8th Stephanie & the Wild Hearts, Brandi LM & the Bottomshelf, Corina Aucker, and The Heartstrings; Saturday, Oct. 3rd White Witch will be there and ready to rock, there will be more bands added to the list soon! All of these events are open to the public, and they are free, but they need to know who all is coming, especially now, to make sure they are still able to practice safe social distancing. They are always looking for donations, sponsorships, and/or commercial spots, to help offset their costs. Jeff does want to thank all of his current sponsors: Coors Light, Blaise Alexander Family Dealerships, Hull’s Landing, Elery Nau Hardware, and RA Jeff Pittinger Time Capsule. Of course, when you’re in a band for 35 years there are a lot of people who helped you out along the way, some of which are still helping them today. Jeff first wanted to thank all of his band members of White Witch, Doug, Carl, & Jimmy, and also the band members of his other projects that all get along beautifully and work together to help make the magic happen: Monster Track Supergroup (Bret Alexander and Jeremy Hummel), and the Betty Ford All-Stars (James Dowling, Matthew Colegrove, Jason Miller, Steve Kepner and Bill Zimmerman). Also, his Pipeline Team: Heath Reese, Alissa Reese, Shellie Mingle, and Crystal Lee, plus Chris Peters at Nova 6 for doing his editing. A band isn’t a band without their fans, they also want to thank everyone that has supported them by either buying a ticket to the shows or buying their CDs, and liking their posts on Facebook, it means the world to them! They also want to thank everyone at the PA Musician Magazine for all their support over the years, Jim Price for coming to our shows and taking cool pics and the awesome drawings he does. [We, the PA Musician Magazine, want to thank Jeff, for always believing in us and advertising his various projects in our pages for 35 years!]. Ted Minier at WZXR for all his support over many years, and Jeremy H. at Heaven and Hell Records for hooking us up, and making “Hell is Doomed” a reality. A super special huge thank you goes to Jeff’s Dad for always believing in him and encouraging him to follow his dreams.. and lastly, he wants to thank God for believing in them and keeping this dream alive, against all odds. To get White Witch booked at your venue or private party, you can give Jeff a call, 570-220-3915, or email: jeffpittinger23@verizon.net. THE PROFESSOR

RIDER’S ON THE STORM continued...

etc. Following Jason was Selinsgrove area based DMT Blues, consisting of Dan Montville on guitar & vocals, Mick Edinger on bass, and Todd Fogle on drums. I’d heard of these guys for a little while and was hoping to catch them soon. The words that came to mind while watching them were raw and gritty. Covering Jimi Hendrix, Muddy Waters, Rolling Stones, and many others; these guys bring a unique style to their music that I enjoyed every minute of.

Todd Fogle - DMT BLUES My next trip out was to see Dave Gates play at Stoney Creek Inn in Dauphin. I’d only been to Stoney Creek once before, and both times now I’ve been very impressed with not only the food, but the service as well. If you get a chance, definitely get out there and check them out. I had watched several of Dave’s live stream events while holed up, so I was really looking forward to seeing him live. Dave plays a wide variety of covers, but does them all in his own style which is something I look for in covers. Dave also takes requests constantly from his fans and if it’s something he doesn’t know, he goes back and learns it and tweaks it into his own style. Over the last few months I’ve had the oppor-

Dan Montville-DMT BLUES tunity to talk to Dave on several occasions and am happy to have added him to my growing list of musician friends. I look forward to seeing more of him in the future. I then made it out for my first trip to Cold Springs Inn to see Shrimp Ryan’s Jig Band. Justin and the boys brought their old time Appalachian irish jig tunes to the Yellow Breeches to a crowd that was there as much for them as they were just to happily get out of the house and enjoy some good company on the deck. Music on the deck at Cold Springs is a beautiful experience...it’s quiet and peaceful with the creek slowly moving by, sometimes with a canoe or kayak. It just made for a great, relaxing evening. My next trip out was to the rooftop deck at Appalachian Brewing Company to see Shine Delphi. Being relatively new to IPA’s myself, I decided to try out one of theirs while I was there. I really enjoyed the Argyle Sweater IPA. Shine describes his music as Gypsy/Ragtime/Folk, but there’s honestly more to it that a simple man like me has trouble describing...but I do love listening to his music. It’s a mix of covers (in his own style) and originals, all of them entertaining and having a story to them. Shine also takes time between songs to talk about how he came up with a song, or maybe a story about his day, or just a joke with his infectious (non-Covid style!) laugh. My final trip out for this article was a last minute trip to the Brewery at Hershey, again a first for me. By the way, try their Heffeweizen, pretty tasty indeed. This was my first time seeing Dave play, he’s a solo acoustic artist out of York County. Dave plays a wide variety of covers including classic rock, jam rock, alternative rock, etc. He put on a good show for a crowd that was happy to be enjoying the sunshine and beer or wine. So...not my normal number of bands and shows for my article, but not much is normal right now I suppose. I’m looking forward to the next month and seeing (hopefully) a lot more live music. I also wanted to add this: If you don’t follow my photography page and you’re a musician, you might want to give me a follow as I’m working on a special announcement in the next few weeks that might interest more than a few of you once I get a few more details ironed out. That, and I enjoy getting more likes for my page ;) Just a reminder: if you’ve got a show coming up that I should see, make sure to send me an invite, shoot me an email or a message, let me know about it. The majority of the shows that I go and shoot I find out about through invites from all of you or your friends. Hit me up on facebook: @chrisriderphotography or email: chrisriderphotography@gmail.com, stop me if you see me out & around and say hi. Until next month...go find some live music and give them and the venue your support. They all need it more now than ever before.

Just a kid aged in the single digits when the 1960s (and especially 1968) happened, I was too young to fully grasp the craziness happening in the United States and the world at that time. But as I began listening to rock’n’roll music when my teenage years arrived in the 1970s, I grew up hearing the songs that addressed what was happening, as famous musicians like Bob Dylan, Marvin Gaye, CSNY, Edwin Starr, The Beatles, CCR, Black Sabbath and numerous others documented and channeled observations and perspectives about the Vietnam War, the civil rights movement, the Kent State killings, national politics and a world seemingly spiraling out of control. 2020 is already being compared to 1968 in terms of societal turbulence, and – confined and unable to play live events – a number of musicians are turning their attention to creating new music about what they see happening in the world. On my “Homegrown Rocker” local music radio show, I have already received and aired recordings from area musicians about COVID-19 and the shutdown, George Floyd’s death, Black Lives Matter and racial equality, and more. As the chaotic narratives of this year continue to unfold, it’s likely that more musicians will channel their observations and feelings into songs, and document these troubled times we live in for future generations to hear and experience. (One new local album about COVID-19, Ted McCloskey’s “The Lost Season Sessions Vol. I: The Big Pause,” is reviewed elsewhere in this issue.) As live music starts to resurface on the state’s stages, I have been easing myself back out to catch a few live shows in recent weeks. Still wary about COVID-19, I’ve been avoiding crowded situations and attending performances where social distancing and safer protocols are being observed. My first venture back into the public live music environment happened at Altoona’s Kryptonite Nightclub (formerly 30 Something/City Limits/New Sebastiano’s), where I saw Lauren & Joe as they kicked off their weekly Thursday night residency here during the summer months. Playing next to the newly-installed second bar area by the dance floor, Lauren and Joe George played three sets of acoustic tunes, mixing a variety of sounds and debuting numerous songs they learned during their COVID-19 shutdown “vacation.” Both were very happy to be playing to people again, and it showed as they gave hearty renditions of tunes from the Black Crowes, Carole King, Fleetwood Mac, Jewel, Shania Twain, Radiohead, Spin Doctors and more. They had learned some 30 new songs during the shutdown, and retained half of them for inclusion into their current live show; some of those were performed this night, including Lady Gaga & Bradley Cooper’s “Shallow,” Sia’s “Cheap Thrills,” Tones and I’s “Dance Monkey,” the Eagles’ “Hotel continued on page 16....

ifornia” and their night-finisher, Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up.” Another new one was part of the duo’s tribute to John Prine, as they unveiled “Lake Marie” following their take on “Spanish Pipedream.” And they did another highlight that I always look forward to, Lauren’s potent voice on Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit!” McGarvey’s in Altoona has begun presenting acoustic entertainment that same weekend, and I saw Walkney frontman Derek Mrdjenovich there as he performed solo acoustic. Derek did many of his original songs through the night to a receptive audience of fans and friends. Derek mixed a number of new songs with tunes from his “Oh No” EP. Some of his songs included “Unhappy,” “I Always Wanted You” and “Medicine.” Derek channeled various emotions through his voice, ranging from delicate to intense, and cheers of approval from the assembled onlookers grew as the night progressed.

Frank Conrad of the Snipped And “dadcore” punk-rocking dads The Snipped ushered in Father’s Day by anchoring their second annual Father’s Day Bash at McGarvey’s. This triple-bill kicked off with Pittsburgh-based punk trio The New 52. Singer and lead guitarist Brian, bassist Wes and drummer Greg generated high-octane, melody-geared punk rock original songs to set the tone of the night. Among their songs were “Welcome to Suburbia” and the fast and frantic “Drunk Again”; the group also did a version of Green Day’s “One of My Lies.” Altoona’s X’s For Eyes followed with their high-velocity brand of punk rock. Singers and guitarists Tom Noel and Tim Mort, bassist Oob and drummer Justin Fair fired through original tunes old and new, including songs from their latest recording “Everything’s Falling Apart” such as “I Don’t Wanna Wait,” plus newer songs such as “814” and “Shut Your Mouth,” the short and sweet “FU” and more. Happy to be back on a live stage, X’s For Eyes made it count, throwing

full vigor and intensity into their performance. Introducing new bass player Frank Conrad, The Snipped finished the night with their mix of new and established “dadcore” original tunes plus a couple of amped-up covers. Frank, singer and guitarist Mike Wax, lead guitarist Jeff Reid and drummer Justin Burket fired up the audience with numerous new numbers plus songs from their “#dadcore” CD such as “Walk Away,” “Hand That Feeds,” “All We Know,” “Bus,” “Friday Night” and “Along These Streets.” They also gave punk rock reboots to Bruce Springsteen’s “Born to Run” and Genesis’ “Invisible Touch.” The Snipped gave away several “dadcore” dad-themed prizes to audience members, including outdoor coolers and a home repair store gift card; and they welcomed former Flannels frontman John Brehm up to help on backing vocals during their encore. The Lockport Drifters- Smoked Country Jam Solstice of Renovo). As with many outdoor events, this year’s Smoked Country Jam was cancelled due to COVID-19 concerns. But thanks to an idea by performer Van Wagner, the online Smoked Country Jam Summer Solstice YouTube Event was organized, with Van editing together live performance video segments contributed by 15 of this year’s scheduled performers. Presented on YouTube during summer solstice day, June 20, the 2½-hour video (which can still be viewed) featured excellent performances, along with greetings and messages from organizers Ron and Teresa Kodish plus many of the festival’s volunteers. One of several festival newcomers, Colorado’s Rapidgrass opened the online event. Four members strong, they did two songs; the first displaying a country-swing flavor, and the second a take on Willie Nelson’s “Blue Eyes Crying in the Rain.” Another new act was western PA’s The Millbillys, a trio featuring established harmonica player Charlie Barath, Well Strung bassist Jeff Scheller and guitarist Sam Stuck-

ey. They did one song, a swing-geared original of Charlie’s called “Losin’ My Mind Over You.” Two new family-based bands also contributed video performances, the Williamson Branch and Echo Valley. From Nashville and six members strong, the Williamson Branch – parents Kevin and Debbie Williamson plus daughters Melody, Caroline and Kadence, plus Anthony Howell on banjo – introduced their bright brand of “classy, sassy, bluegrassy” music during their three-song set. A youthful group comprised of six sisters and a brother from a farm family in Beaver County, Echo Valley displayed heart, enthusiasm and bright harmonies during their three-song performance, capped with the sisters belting out a 1940s Andrews Sisters number, “Oh Johnny, Oh Johnny, Oh!” Besides editing together the Solstice video, Danville’s Van Wagner performed his two-song set near a campfire, performing his songs “North of 80” and “Crosscut Saw.” The video also featured performances from returning Smoked Country Jam performers such as Nashville-based Huntingdon County native Doug Forshey, Tennessee’s Valerie Smith (sans her band Liberty Pike), Asheville, North Carolina’s Fireside Collective, Lock Haven’s Lockport Drifters, western PA’s The Jakobs Ferry Stragglers, Harrisburg’s Colebrook Road, Pennsburg’s Texas Rose Band, Altoona’s Mama Corn, West Virginia’s Silas Powell & the Powell Family Band, and Pittsburgh’s Well Strung. Many of this year’s scheduled performers have already committed to performing at next year’s Smoked Country Jam – “Twice as fun in 2021,” the festival will happen June 17-19, 2021. I plan to be there! The day before her two-song set during the Smoked Country Jam Summer Solstice event, I also encountered one of Valerie Smith’s solo live stream performances. This became an intriguing presentation, as Valerie introduced the online audience to a number of new folk-geared songs she has been working

Valarie Smith on, based on a journal written by her great grandmother, Maggie. These songs will appear on Valerie’s next album, tentatively called “Maggie’s Journal.” The songs – many darker in tone – deal with parts of Maggie’s life revealed in the journal, including hard times during her post-Civil War childhood and young adult years. Some of the songs Valerie performed included “I Was Too Young to Know,” “Started Wrong in Life,” “Warm My Feet to Cry,” “Blue Bottle of Bad,” “Jim Dell You Came From Hell,” “Olga’s Lullaby” and more. Valerie did several other songs as well, including “I’m Fine Being Me,” her popular “Something continued on page 18....

About a Train,” a new song written about her father entitled “Talking to Daddy,” “Red Clay Halo” and a request for “I Found Love Where It Wasn’t Supposed to Be.” Every so often as live streaming has picked up in popularity during the shutdown period, it’s possible to witness famous musical names who are doing live stream events, and view their performances from our own homes. Some that I have witnessed so far included the Dropkick Murphys, Ed Roland of Collective Soul, ukulele virtuoso Jake Shimabukuro...and now Tommy Shaw. Tommy performed an online Facebook live stream event in late May, part of the Number Juan Tequila Concert Series on VBar Live. Former area musician John Solinski “opened” the performance earlier in the evening, also part of the Number Juan Tequila series. I caught the last half hour of John’s set as he brought his fun party online with sing-alongs and requests, doing numbers from Tom Petty, Joe Walsh, John Mellencamp, Bon Jovi, Neil Diamond and more. Number Juan Tequila owners – comedians Alex Reymundo and Ron White – soon introduced Tommy as

John Solinski he performed from his living space. Brandishing several acoustic guitars along the way, Tommy sang an assortment of material, spanning his Styx and Damn Yankees libraries, his bluegrass album, a few newer songs, and even a few audience requests. He opened with one of Damn Yankees’ popular numbers, “Come Again,” before introducing a new song, “Sound the Alarm,” from the forthcoming next Styx album. He broke out his version of Led Zeppelin’s “Going to California,” followed by “I’ll Be Comin’ Home” from his 2011 bluegrass album “The Great Divide.” Tommy then entered the Styx library to do “Fooling Yourself (The Angry Young Man)” and a request for “Blue Collar Man.” Tommy then honored a request for something influential by doing a verse of a Yes classic, “(I’ve Seen) All Good People,” before switching to his 12-string guitar for another Styx classic, “Crystal Ball.” He then returned to his bluegrass album for the title track, “The Great Divide.” Tommy mixed Styx and Damn Yankees classics for his homestretch, finishing up the performance with his acoustic versions of “Renegade,” “High Enough,” “Too Much Time on My Hands” and “Sing for the Day.” This was a fun performance; Tommy’s voice can still hit the high notes, and it was enjoyable to hear his Styx and Damn Yankees numbers in stripped-down acoustic form. After the performance, Alex and Ron joined Tommy and his America’s Original Indie Label wife, Jeanne for an online chat Celebrating 6 Decades session that lasted well into the Get Released on our night.

I also checked out last month’s live stream double-bill of Maryland-based bands Southern Charm and Wake The Neighbors, presented by Showtime Sound. From Frederick, Maryland, Southern Charm opened with a lively set that mixed popular country, classic rock hits and more. Together since 2014, the group features two lead singers, Kimmie Smith and Lauren Carnahan, along with guitarist John Turcotte, bassist Dave Clements and drummer Ricky Slezak. Southern Charm delivered their music with excitement and charm, performing numbers from Miranda Lambert, Little Big Town, the Eagles, Fleetwood Mac, Linda Ronstadt, Dixie Chicks, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Keith Urban, Shania Twain and more. Both Kimmie and Lauren brought hearty voices up front, as well as tight vocal harmonies; and the rest of the group displayed tight execution behind them. Wake The Neighbors then brought the rock, delivering a mix of classic rock, alternative rock, metal and more. This group features two former Altoona musicians, Nevermoure/Vs. the Earth alumni Mike Ritchey on lead guitar and Shawn Hocherl (also vice president of Showtime Sound) on drums, along with Mike Newberry on lead vocals and guitars, and Chuck Moore on bass, keys and vocals. Opening with an impressive version of The Darkness’ “I Believe in a Thing Called Love,” Wake The Neighbors woke the online viewership with hard-rocking favorites from AC/DC, Led Zeppelin, Metallica, Tool, Fallout Boy and more. The group also broke out versions of Stevie Wonder’s “Superstition” and – with Chuck providing the raps – Montell Jordan’s “This Is How We Do It.” The band members sans Shawn swapped instruments (Mike Ritchey on keys, Mike Newberry on bass and Chuck on lead guitar) for Journey’s “Don’t Stop Believin,’” and Wake The Neighbors brought classic metal firepower on two Iron Maiden tunes, “The Trooper” and the set-ending “Run to the Hills.” Mike Newberry showed power, range and clarity in his voice up front, and the rest of the group sounded powerful and precise. Four years ago – during Memorial Day weekend in 2016 – two friends and I did a “day-cation” journey to Washington, D.C. to visit the Newseum news museum (which closed its doors at the end of last year). As part of that journey, we rode the Metro subway and a bus to Old Town Alexandria to check out shops, eateries and displays. While there, we walked past a young, teenaged rock trio playing on one of the lawns, and watched them for a few minutes. I learned that their name was Flippin’ Eyelids, and liked their page on Facebook. Four years later, in late May, I came across Flippin’ Eyelids performing a live stream event, and checked out their performance. Based in southern Maryland,

Flippin’ Eyelids are three brothers – Sam, Eli and Ray Guzzone, playing drums, guitar and bass respectively. During this live stream, they played an energetic variety of tunes, spanning the Beatles’ “Come Together” to Sum 41’s “Fat Lip,” the Commodores’ “Brick House” to Blur’s “Song 2,” “Wagon Wheel” to Lynyrd Skynyrd’s “Simple Man” and just about everything in between. Flippin’ Eyelids sounded sharp, and played their tunes with a lot of enthusiasm. It was cool to run across Flippin’ Eyelids online and see that their musical journey has continued since that day four years ago. The group was raising funds during the live stream to record two of their original songs; those completed songs were released on digital platforms at the end of June. Also online in late May was Harrisburg’s Nate Myers with a live stream performance. Armed with acoustic guitar and harmonica (and even kazoo), Nate mixed up some original tunes, train songs, blues, folk and gospel sounds. He opened his set on the harmonica, performing “Tell Him What You Want (Jesus on the Mainline),” one of a few gospel songs he did this night. Nate introduced a couple of songs from his forthcoming new album, and he also did one of my favorites of his original tunes, the title track from his “It’s My Music” album, a song Nate Myers inspired by the story of Muddy Waters. Nate also did a few trainwreck-themed songs, including Reverend Andrew Jenkins/Jimmie Rodgers’ “Ben Dewberry’s Final Run” and “Wreck of the Old 97,” plus a train-themed harmonica instrumental. There were also Nate’s takes on Kris Kristofferson’s “Sunday Mornin’ Comin’ Down” and the ever-popular “Wagon Wheel,” and he also did several other gospel numbers such as a request for “I’ll Fly Away,” “I’ve Got a Home in That Rock” and his closer, “This Little Light of Mine.” This was an enjoyable set, with Nate’s hearty, soulful voice and dazzling harmonica skills ever-present, and his personality shining bright as he eagerly greeted online visitors and shared the inspirations behind a few of his songs. Shea Quinn (of The Sharks and Luv Gods fame) has

been making live stream appearances recently as well. During late May, I watched Shea as he performed a midday live stream matinee on LancasterOnline for the debut of their “Quarantunes” streaming series. Playing guitar and singing, Shea played an assortment of original tunes, including several from The Sharks’ catalog such as “Only Time Will Tell,” “Do You Remember,” “Don’t Blame Me” and more. He also did a few he co-wrote with Jeffrey Gaines, including “Love Disappears” and the set-closing “What It Is.” Shea also mixed in a few covers, including renditions of David Bowie’s “Starman,” INXS’ “Don’t Change,” the Stray Cats’ “Runaway Boys” and Badfinger’s “Baby Blue.” It all sounded good; Shea was having fun with the online audience and the live stream host, taking requests and giving shout-outs to fans along the way. Penn State’s public radio and television outlet, WPSU, recently adjusted their digital online local music video series, “Metronome” to the current climate with “Metronome From Home,” featuring local and regional musicians performing from their own homes. State College-based singer and songwriter Eric Ian Farmer appeared in last month’s installment of the series. Eric performed five songs and fielded interview questions from “Metronome” host Alex Rabb during the presentation. Displaying his smooth, soothing and soulful voice, Eric did three a cappella numbers, opening with “Muse” and singing “Brother to Brother” and “Show Me the Way” for his last two songs, tapping accompanying rhythms on his hands and chest. Eric also strummed the guitar on two of his other original songs, “Love Thing Part 2” and “Not Only Ferguson.” Eric gave dynamic performances throughout, and again showed his quality of building emotional impact through both his passionate singing and quieter passages. If you browse through Facebook during evenings, you may have encountered northeastern PA’s John Nasser during his frequent

Other live stream performers and performances I have seen in recent weeks included sets by Skye, Kalawati-Carmen and Maleena during the online Pittsburgh Women’s Music Festival (presented by Mr. Smalls Theatre)…Norman Nardini’s always-entertaining bi-weekly live streams, and online performances from North Carolina’s Josh Daniel (with his emphasis on the Grateful Dead), Dan Stonerook, The Evergreens and Nick Miller. PA MUSICIAN REVIEWS By Jim Price

TED McCLOSKEY – THE LOST SEASON SESSIONS VOL. I – THE BIG PAUSE (no label) “Everybody’s feeling the spring fever/This one’s gonna linger for a while/Everybody’s feeling the spring fever/This one’s gonna last all summer long.” The chorus of “Spring Fever,” the opening track of Ted McCloskey’s latest album, The Lost Season Sessions Vol. 1 – The Big Pause; these words establish the central thread of this set, as Ted channels his experiences, observations and muses stemming from the coronavirus shutdown. As one of State College’s busiest musicians, Ted saw his livelihood of playing out several nights a week come to an abrupt halt in March; he subsequently directed his energies toward creating the 10 songs on this album, plus more new songs for subsequent recordings. Following “Spring Fever,” Ted addresses the tedium of isolation and killing time on the acoustic-geared “To Be Quarantined,” and expresses the agony and frustration of furloughs and financial insecurity on the hard-driving Americana rock of “Nonessential.” The logjam of emotions, confusion and mental wear and tear from the ordeal inform the words of “Bottlenecked,” and Ted seeks levity to disrupt the monotony on the uptempo “Laughter.” Hopes and goals are dealt a rigid reality check on the hard-rocking “Some Things Aren’t Meant to Fly,” while late night demons face the sunrise on the soulful “Up All Night Morning.” Uncertainty and dashed hopes prevail on the melancholy “River of Doubt,” and frustration over blind allegiance boils over on the punchy “Such a Stupid Man.” And for the album’s finale, Ted addresses social distancing, fears of infection, and concerns about the rush back to normalcy on “Till the World Starts Spinning Again.” Ted delivers some of his strongest songwriting here; his words intelligently convey feelings and emotions that he and many people have experienced during the past several months. His melodies and arrangements connect, and

his constant nuanced blend of modern and traditional musical flavors keep this album sounding fresh from start to end. Through Ted McCloskey’s words and music, The Lost Season Sessions Vol. I – The Big Pause captures many aspects of the times we have endured since March, and this album effectively presents a musical snapshot of our current-day reality. (The album can be obtained from Ted’s Bandcamp page, as well as iTunes and other online retailers.) CHIP & THE CHARGE UPS – LIGHTNING IN OUR VEINS (no label) Formed two years ago by singer, guitarist and namesake Chip Dominick and his then-16-year-old daughter Maleena, Chip & the Charge Ups quickly drew attention in the Pittsburgh area and beyond with their invigorating blend of rock, pop and punk flavors. Their third recording, Lightning in Our Veins, offers a showcase of what this band’s sound is all about through nine impressive tracks. Both Chip and Maleena share and swap lead singing duties, with Chip playing lead guitar and Maleena on bass; joined by DJ Carothers on guitar and Jeff DiPerna on drums. Chip & the Charge Ups issue a strong mission statement on the album’s hard-grooving opening track, “Feel Electricity,” to make listeners and audiences feel the musical lightning in their veins. Maleena takes the spotlight on the group’s punk-fueled update of Blondie’s 1980 hit “The Tide Is High,” which steadily increases in intensity toward a glorious fist pump-inspiring finish. Chip addresses poisonous people on the crunchy and anthemic “Toxic Human,” and encourages listeners to live each day with gusto on the fast-firing punk rocker “This Bomb Ain’t Gonna Light Itself.” Known for their mash-ups during live shows, Chip & the Charge Ups wed Ozzy Osbourne and Lady Gaga in musical matrimony with their clever “Bark at the Bad Romance,” with both Chip and Maleena convincing in their respective Ozzy and Gaga singing roles. Maleena provides the album’s mild moment with the catchy and acoustic-geared relationship ballad “Iced Tea and Lemonade.” After two more infectious rockers in the Chip-fronted “Glory” and the Maleena-fronted “Unbreakable,” the album finishes with the punchy holiday season duet rocker “Black and Gold Christmas,” celebrating Christmas Pittsburgh-style with guest singers Liz Berlin (of Rusted Root), Doug Carnahan (of After The Fall), Jen Craven and Char Fields. All things click on this album; the song hooks are contagious and easily memorable, the lyrics are relatable and easy to digest, and both Chip and Maleena sing their words with passion and swagger. The group’s execution is sharp and powerful, and the overall sound is vibrant, balanced, full and edgy. Chip & the Charge Ups connect full flush on Lightning in Our Veins, a fun and exciting album well worthy of being cranked loud on your favorite listening device. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s website, www.thechargeups.com.) FELIX & THE HURRICANES – ALL ROADS LEAD TO CRESSON (no label) Recently passing the 30-year milestone as a band, Felix & the Hurricanes have long established themselves as an institution on the west-central PA music scene and beyond. Seventeen years after the release of their last studio album, 2003’s Travelers Not Forgotten, the group has released a limited-edition, two-CD live set called All Roads Lead to Cresson. Recorded during a performance at the R-Bar in Pittsburgh, the long-running Hurricanes roster of singer and guitarist Felix Kos, bassist and singer Jeff Clapper, and drummer and singer Bob Watters demonstrate their performance chemistry and energy over the set’s 19 tracks, playing six original songs and 13 of their most popular and unique covers. Two of the original songs have not appeared on

CD before; their feisty surf rock/rockabilly-informed instrumental “Whirlwind” and the upbeat “Beale Street,” where Jeff sings the story of the group’s happy experience at the 2010 International Blues Challenge in Memphis. Also included are the group’s popular rock’n’rolling original song “The Lonely One,” the sullen “On the Bottom,” the hard-driving “Keep on Rockin’” and the 22

R&B-driven “Walkin’ A Straight Line.” Of the cover material, The Hurricanes embrace their southern rock roots with powerful renditions of The Outlaws’ “There Goes Another Love Song” (which opens the first disc), ZZ Top’s “Heard It on the X” and Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See.” They also deliver three different Allman Brothers favorites: their fiery takes on “Whipping Post” and “Dreams,” plus the tender “Melissa”; and they unleash full fury on one of their frequent jaw-dropping favorites, a 10-minute rendering of The Outlaws’ “Green Grass and High Tides.” Other highlights include their take on John Mayer’s “Waiting on the World to Change,” Albert King’s “Born Under a Bad Sign,” the group pushing pedal to the metal on Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Rude Mood,” and a thunderous version of Iron Butterfly’s “In a Gadda da Vida.” The Hurricanes’ musical fireworks and enthusiasm shine constantly; Felix and Jeff both deliver hearty and heartfelt performances on the vocal end. Instrumentally, Felix wrings out every ounce of emotion as he makes his guitar sing, Jeff’s bass rumbles with authority, and Bob’s drum beats pack steady power to drive the songs forward. The recording and mix sound balanced and full, and capture the raw essence and energy of the Hurricanes’ live show, as well as Felix’s occasional quips and the audience’s constant appreciation. For seasoned longtime “Hurricaniacs,” All Roads Lead to Cresson is a fine representation of what Felix & the Hurricanes bring to the live stage, and for first-time listeners, this set offers an enticing introduction and entry point into this group’s Category 5 musical storm. (The CD is available in limited quantity at the group’s shows.) ARTE TEDESCO – LIGHTNING STRIKES! (no label) Pittsburgh’s Arte Tedesco has been making music for a half-century, and his vast career has taken him to Florida, Hollywood, and elsewhere around the country. His fifth album overall and first in 10 years, Lightning Strikes!, offers a mixture of musical flavors, as well as thoughts, reflections and wisdom from an artist who has done some living. The album’s eight tracks blend elements of rock, blues, jazz, folk and reggae into an engaging mix with no two numbers the same. Arte sings and plays guitar, joined by David Granati on lead guitar, Joey Granati on bass and keys, and Greg McIltrot on drums and percussion. Relationships inform many of these songs; on the playful and slinky album-opener, “Ole Lion,” Arte asserts himself as the seasoned and wily king of his domain as he stalks romantic prey. He envisions his dream lady on the gentle and acoustic-driven “Sweet Baby of My Dreams,” ponders the mystery of relationships on the jazz-toned “Wonderin,’” and considers the finality of relationships on the reggae-edged “The Last Word.” The two hardest-rocking songs on the album both place first impressions in weather-related contexts; the title track “Lightning Strikes” compares a shot of lightning with that first encounter with a game-changing woman, while “Hurricane” warns of the building storm of love and what it may entail. Arte pays homage to his hometown and what brings him back to it on the pleasant-toned “Pittsburgh,” and he offers some self-reflection on the hearty and album-ending “Who I Am.” Arte’s voice exudes personality and spirit throughout the album, and his presentation is honest and heartfelt. The overall musicianship is solid and steady, with the performances coloring and supporting the melodies. Produced by Arte, recorded at Dave’s World Studios in Ambridge and mixed at John Blanche Audio in Orlando, Lightning Strikes! sounds straightforward and smooth. Arte’s voice comes through strong and clean, and the mix sounds balanced with all components represented clearly. This album offers a musical snapshot of Arte Tedesco in the moment; Lightning Strikes! provides a pleasant listen and touches of life wisdom from an artist who has experienced life and love, and lived to tell about both. (The CD can be obtained through Arte’s website, www.artetedesco.com.) rauders, Keystone All Stars, and more recently, The Snipped and his eponymous Rik Golden Band. Almost 15 years after releasing his self-titled debut album in 2005, Rik has issued his latest CD, Hold On. Through 13 tracks, Rik generates high-powered rock’n’roll, tapping influences spanning punk rock, the Rolling Stones and roots music. Singing and playing bass, Rik introduces seven new songs and updates six numbers from the 2005 album, assisted along the way by Todd Harshbarger on drums, guitarists Rick Ramsey and Greg Larrimore, and his son Rick III on percussion. Rik sets the tone with the introductory track, a high-octane update of the punk-driven breakup song “Alone.” Punk adrenaline also powers the title track “Hold On,” as well as the Ramones-ish “What They Say.” Rik channels Rolling Stones-styled bad boy rock on several songs, including “Another Round,” “Illusion” and an update of “Still Sittin’ Home.” Rik taps roots sounds as well, dabbling in country twang on the cigarette habit-kicking ode “His Last One,” and displaying a surf-rock edge on “Let You Go” and an update of his surfabilly instrumental “Cresson Gutter Bums” (inspired by an adventure of surfing storm drain torrents following a thunderstorm in the Cambria County town of Cresson). Rik also gives sharp-edged updates to three more of his popular earlier tunes, “Brown Eye Mary,” “Gig Is Up” and the album-closing “Something Else (In Mind).” The performances are energized and hearty, as Rik sinks go-for-broke enthusiasm into his singing and driving bass lines. His cast of musical accomplices deliver that same edge, as the guitar riffs chug, the guitar solos sting, and Todd’s drumbeats pack punch and velocity. Recorded and produced at Rik’s own Golden Studios, Hold On hits hard, sounds mean and lean, and displays edginess and bite throughout. Rik Golden amps up the rock and roll on Hold On, a freewheeling set sure to win new listeners and fans. (The CD can be obtained at Rik’s shows, and the digital album is available through Amazon.)
