It’s hard to believe Spring has sprung and we are finally crawling out of our Winter hibernation. There are lots of exciting things happening around Harrisburg and beyond. Flip through the magazine and check out our new advertisers! A few bands and a few VENUES! Not to mention all of the amazing advertisers that have been with us for YEARS! Everything from the bands to the music stores, we are all just one big family, family that needs each other for support. Speaking of support I was able to get away a few times this month to support some awesome bands and events. My first stop of the month was at Double K to see Smokin Gunnz. If you’ve ever read my articles before you know how much I love these guys. They graced our cover last month, so I was able to take them the magazine and let them see it. It’s always stressful writing a cover story, but I’m glad they liked it. Smokin Gunnz has a great following at the Double K. That place is always standing room only and you can barely squeeze thru people to walk around! It’s awesome to see how much Zach just fits right in and keeps the show rockin’! Mike’s been stepping up and singing more songs, and Rick is doing a great job singing harmonies! Bob is still holding down the fort behind the kit, singing most of the songs flawlessly and effortlessly. It’s cool hearing them cover some new songs, it’s awesome to see them still continuing to grow even after 20 years!
The next night I headed down to Lancaster for the Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival. I was thoroughly impressed once again by the whole event. When I checked in I was given a VIP Press pass that allowed me access to anywhere! It was super nice and super convenient to be able to get up close and personal to some truly amazing musicians! Thank to Rich Ruoff for not only hosting such an amazing event, but finding all of the talent to play and entertain the masses of people. One of my favorite parts of this music festival is you can park your car and just walk to all of the venues. If the walking was too much for you, they also had a free shuttle service by Lexus vans, or there was always Uber. Even while I was standing at the check-in table I already heard amazing music coming from the Main Stage inside the ballroom of the Marriott. I followed the music and found Kenny Neal and his band rockin’ the stage. It was a great set up with tons of chairs for people to sit and enjoy the music and a dance floor for those people like myself that like to get up close and personal. When I first walked in Kenny was wailing away on the harp, but then he switched to shredding on the guitar. Only the first band, but I was already so excited! Kenny Neal came up all the way from Louisiana, again Rich looks far and wide to make sure he brings in the best talent. The room was packed, all the chairs were filled, the dance floor was packed! I always love seeing so many people out supporting music, I just often wonder where are they the rest of the year! Next I squeezed my body into the back stage at Tellus360. The Ron Holloway Band was on stage, holy saxophone player!! He was definitely jaw dropping to hear him wailing on the Saxophone! The sax is definitely one of those instruments you don’t see very much of in this area, and it was a special treat for sure. Ron Holloway and his band came up from the DC area to grace us with their presence, and I’m glad they did. Next I walked a couple blocks up to the Chameleon Club for the Peterson Brothers from Austin, TX. You can’t let their

age fool you, even at the young age of 18 and 20, their talent is well beyond their years and they were having a blast on the stage, playing to a packed house! Luckily I know some secret back ways to go from level to level in the Chameleon or there would’ve been no way to squeeze myself up to the front for the pics I got. It didn’t matter where or when, every venue was slam packed! The Peterson Brothers had an amazing stage presence, not only were they crazy good musicians, but their dance moves and just overall charisma on stage was just so awesome and refreshing to watch! After a few songs I took a quick walk up to The Village to see Magic Dick and Shun Ng from Boston. It sounded like quite the combo by just the name, but inside The Village they were like a match made in heaven. It’s hard to believe a harmonica player and one guitar can be entertaining enough to call themselves a band, but I was truly impressed. Magic Dick can wail on that harp, and Shun Ng is a world-class guitarist and vocalist. With the two of them, it’s amazing the sound they can create. It was awesome to see so many people in The Village enjoying the music. While I was there Shun Ng even had his own solo time breaking out some Prince! His guitar licks were just crazy. I never saw someone’s hand move so crazy and fast up and down the frets! Add that in with his voice and it was just awesome! Before I got too mesmerized I wanted to get back to the main stage for Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers. I’ve heard lots of good things about Tommy Conwell and when I got back to the main stage I could tell I wasn’t the only one. The place was insanely packed, you could hardly get in the ballroom doors! I hung out in the back for a while just enjoying the show, but after just a few songs I couldn’t resist, I had to make my way to the front. Tommy Conwell and the Young Rumblers played all over the midstate in the 80s and 90s. They actually signed with Columbia Records at one point, and had a #1 hit, “I’m Not Your Man.” They rarely play together any more, except for the occasional show, but obviously they still have some fans, ready to show up to hear them, whenever and wherever! Eric Hoffman told me that Tommy was the main reason he wanted to come down to the Festival, and I saw him, front and center when I got up there. Once again I was impressed with the organization and all of the bands at the Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival. You can already buy tickets for next year’s festival. He only sells so many VIP tickets, and like I said before they are well worth it. I just really love walking around the streets of Lancaster and listening to all of the great music along the way. You definitely can’t see music like this every day, but one nice thing with technology is checking them all out on YouTube. Banished For Life at Double K On my drive home I had to stop for an Energy drink to stay awake, so by the time I got off my exit I had plenty of energy, so I decided to swing out to Double K to finish off the night with Banished For Life. Doug, Sam, and Steve are always entertaining to say the least! For only a three-piece these guys really know how to rock a stage! They’ve been playing so long together it’s amazing to see how they gel and play together. I love how they play songs that most bands don’t play, but they are the songs everyone loves. Kudos to whoever writes up their set lists!
After ending the night with a bunch of wild shenanigans it was finally time to go home and get some sleep. What a long, but very entertaining day! I usually fly by the seat of my pants and never really know where I’m going on a typical Friday or Saturday night, but occasionally bigger shows catch my eye that I get excited about. One of those shows was a special Sunday night show at HMAC. The headliner was Buckcherry, which I was intrigued about, but the main band I was excited about was New Day Dawn. I met them quite a few years ago when they came to play the MMC, I loved them right from the start. They are crazy amazing musicians and just super cool people. I almost completely missed their show because I wasn’t expecting them to play second, but thanks to my super awesome spy Karen, she texted me to let me know the line-up, I made it there in time! Unfortunately, Buckcherry stage crew cut their set super short! It was rather depressing when they don’t even give them any type of warning, like one more song, or anything, they just cut all power to the stage and told them they were done. I told Dawn they must’ve been intimidated by their greatness! Luckily I did get to hear a few songs and snag a few pics before they were cut off. The next opener was Emily’s Toybox. It was crazy to see them only play a 40 minute set, it’s like the show just got started and it was over. In true merch fashion ETB took full advantage of every second on stage and put forth their best effort to make the
crowd love them, they were throwing out free t-shirts, and even throwing out drum heads like frisbees, drum sticks, picks, whatever. The crowd loved it! They of course also played their song that went viral on the internet, “My D*** Smells Like Chapstick,” which also had the crowd excited. They did a great job getting the crowd excited for Buckcherry. I was actually pretty surprised when I heard Buckcherry’s set, I never really followed them, but I’ve heard their big hit “Crazy continued on page 10...

OUT & ABOUT continued Bi***” too many times to count. Quite a few of their songs were a lot slower than I thought they would be, and they even sang a ballad! I was surprised at how packed HMAC was for a Sunday night show. The Capital Room is a nice big room, I think it can hold somewhere over 1,000 people, there weren’t quite 1,000 people there for this show, but it was still a great turn out. This was an extremely busy week because another very anticipated show was Monday night, The Dropkick Murphys at the Sherman Theatre! I’ve never seen them live before and I was excited!! SLP Concerts hooked my friend Holly and I up with tickets which I am extremely grateful for. SLP Concerts brings so many amazing acts into the area. I know one of the bigger ones coming soon is Slayer!!!! They will be playing at the Santander Arena in Reading. And another big favorite of the PA Musician Magazine fans, Halestorm is coming in May also to the Santander Arena! It was our first time at the Sherman Theatre and it was a sold out show, so we had no idea what to expect, but I was thoroughly impressed! They had plenty of security doing searches and checking IDs that there wasn’t even a line, but we also got there after the opening bands already started, so I’m sure that helped. Then after Holly checked in to the venue we got a tap on our shoulders with VIP Skybox Passes!!! WHAT!!! YES!!! Matt Byers, a wonderful super amazing friend that I graduated High School with happened to be at the show, and happened to have extra Skybox Passes.. Have I mentioned how wonderful Matt Byers is yet?!? If you know him please tell him how awesome he is… anywho.. Obviously the Skybox is the way to see a Sold Out, Standing Room Only, Dropkick Murphys show, unless of course you are one of those wild mosh pit kind of people, then I guess maybe you’d like to be down in the mix. When we got settled one of the openers, Agnostic Front was still on stage. I heard from friends that they are a good band, but they did an amazing job at getting everyone rowdy and ready for the show. They are from New York, but I’ve heard they’ve traveled thru our area quite a bit, I’m surprised our paths haven’t crossed before because they definitely play my kind of music. Then, it was finally time for Dropkick Murphys!!!! If you’ve never seen them live, I highly suggest it. The energy that they have is completely overwhelming, and all of the instruments on the stage was super awesome. Obviously the bagpipes, but the keys, the banjo, guitars, everybody!! I couldn’t believe how fast they were all playing, you could hardly see their hands they were moving so fast!!! And they were that intense the entire show. They hardly stopped to take a breath. When they came out for the encore instead of just playing one more song… they played like 5! Definitely a great show and what a band to see the week of St. Patrick’s Day! Thanks again to SLP Concerts, Stan and Tim, for getting us in the show, and super thanks to Matt Byers that hooked us up with the Skybox seats!! What an experience! Stroudsburg was an awesome little town. We stayed overnight in the Hampton Inn, a nice little walk to the theatre, by far the closest hotel to the venue. Just be careful if you walk there, I swear that sidewalk just jumped up and attacked me! It took a few days to recover from that super crazy weekend, I was glad I had a trip to Ohio to relax with family over St. Patty’s Day so I didn’t get myself into any more trouble. The following weekend started out Friday night with Frayed Nott at Chick’s Tavern in Hummelstown. Getting “Notty” on Fridays is always fun! It’s always nice to let loose after a long week of work! The venues are fewer and further in between for bands like Frayed Nott. Luckily Chick’s is in their hometown so it’s easy for them to always draw a crowd there. There was quite a bit of “Notty” stuff going on especially with talks of wearing the bigger “strapon” next time! You just never know what’s going to happen at a Frayed Nott show, you better get out there and come check it out for yourself. Check out their ad in this issue and come on out and get “Notty!” The next night was a long, yet delightful one. It started out at the State Pennsylvania Moose Association Meeting where they were having a state-wide karaoke contest, and me, Jen Shade from 105.7 the X Morning Show, and a Middle School Choral Teacher, Becky. I felt like we were all really fair judges. It was by far one of the hardest things I’ve done in a long time. continued on page 11...

I couldn’t believe all of the talent! It started with 10 contestants, then 6, 3, and then 1 final winner. It was a real nail biter! The winner only won by a ½ a point! The final 3 contestants were so completely different, it was hard to believe we had to judge them all the same, when they were each amazing in their own way. For me in the end it was all about stage presence. Stage Happy Birthday Linda, JoAnne & Dave presence is huge to me whether you are a singer, speaker, etc. If you want me to pay attention to you, you need to pay attention to me (your fan). I’m thankful to Imelda for inviting me to judge at the event. It was tons of fun. I hadn’t seen Jen Shade in quite a while, and I always love hanging out with her. After the karaoke contest it was time to go let loose and enjoy the rest of the night and the best place to do that is at Double K with Steel. I only stayed for a few songs because I was truly exhausted, but it was nice to relax and see everyone. It was JoAnne Jones, (Joanie’s Mom) 79th birthday! She was still up on the dance floor out dancing all of us! We also celebrated Dave and Linda’s birthdays too. Happy Birthday everyone!! I don’t ususally cover upcoming shows but Jim is bringing some great shows to the Racehorse Tavern. Jim at Racehorse has been putting in his schedule a while now and even tho I’ve only been down there a handful of times, I have a blast every time! His April ad is once again stacked with bands every Friday and Saturday night. One band in particular that caught my eye is Lovebettie on April 14th!! I met them years ago at the MMC and I was instantly impressed as were many otherres there, Alexandra’s voice is so distinct and amazing! I was thrilled to see that her and her fellow band-mate and husband C.T. have started a side project Willow Hill where they play as a pop-country duo! Lovebettie is also one of Jim’s favorite and rightly so. Following is from their “About” page on facebook and it’s worth a share so it will peak your interest and get you to the Racehorse to see them live for they are garnering interest in Nashville and continue to pursue an international career in music and when that happens you won’t catch them up close and personal like now — Recently named Rolling Stone’s “Band to watch” and selected in the top 3 out of 20,000 artists to perform at the Grammys, Lovebettie has performed at Milwaukee’s Summerfest as direct support for Pat Benetar and Rick Springfield. The band was also a mainstage headliner at Sturgis Motorcycle Rally in 2014 on a triple headlining bill with Queensryche and The Cult, and headlined the second stage at Rocklahoma 2015 immediately following Linkin Park and returned again in 2016). Lovebettie has also performed on Van’s Warped Tour, South By Southwest, and The Official Lady Gaga Afterparty for her Monsters Ball Tour. The band was personally selected by Jon Bon Jovi as one of three bands to contend for a tour opening spot, and has shared bills with multitudes of national acts including: Lifehouse, Hinder, 311, Carly Rae Jepsen, The Joy Formidable, Fuel, Hanson, Imagine Dragons, and many more. Their accomplishments are pretty impressive and well deserved. They perform all over so it’s great that Jim brings them to PA for us all to enjoy their great music and talent. Also coming to the Racehorse is a benefit for Scott Golden. Scott is in Disorderly Conduct and has been performing for many years. This past winter he got sick and needs the music community’s help and because Scott has always helped out when called upon Jim and his crew are holding a benefit for him April 27th and 28th. Two days of great local musicians coming together to help out a fellow musician. They’re asking for a $5 donation but you know you can always give more. Bands include Disorderly Conduct, Y2Kids, Radio Bravo, Conviction, Willie Dikker, In Theory, Anicca, Hit or Miss, Dog Pound and probably more. Be sure to check out Racehorse’s schedule and support live music where it’s happening. There is a new venue in Harrisburg called Club XL. They officially kick off their first event with a Dance Party April 13th to introduce to you their amazing set up. Article & All photos by RACHEL ROCKS Jerry Duncan’s Guitars on George, or maybe better known as Jerry’s Guitars, has been Jerry Duncan’s dream since 1981. His first plan was to open a small recording studio where he had a few nice vintage pieces that people would use for recording, with some guitars he would just have on display. Eventually musicians’ instruments would break or they would forget something, so then he started carrying “back-up” supplies. Before he even knew it the “back-up” supplies were expanding into his garage out back and his equipment was selling more than his records, and Jerry’s Garage was born. Jerry’s Garage was a play off the old Zappa album ‘Joe’s Garage’. It seemed like a cool name for a guitar shop. Then as he expanded he got a real shop, so sticking with the theme that was called, The Guitar Shop. Throughout the years and with a story behind each one, he’s now on Lucky Store #7, and it happens to be right on George Street in York, so naturally it’s called, Guitars on George. I had the privilege to go down to Guitars on George and sit and chat with Jerry. It was quite an interesting day with plenty of customers in the door, and plenty of stories to tell. It was so ironic Jerry and I were both laughing and Jerry kept saying, “Seriously, I didn’t pay these people to come here and say these things today!” They all had something nice to say about Jerry and how he had helped them in their musical endeavors. When I got there, Russ Brooks from Dirt Cheap was there hanging with Jerry. Here it turns out Russ was one of the many guitar maniacs that have graced Jerry’s stores for years. Wherever Jerry went, the guitar maniacs followed. Russ took the time to tell me about how when he was about 14 or 15, before the days of YouTube, Jerry had a nickel juke box (which he still has today), he would come in and pump it full of nickels and listen to all kinds of amazing music. Then they would play guitars and Jerry would teach them how to play by ear and figure out what the “pros” were doing to make all of those cool riffs! Russ wasn’t the only kid that Jerry affected in a positive way, there was also a guy you might have heard of, Chad Taylor, that came in when he was about 15 years old. Jerry happened to have a 1954 Les Paul that Chad couldn’t take his eyes off of. Jerry got it down and put it in Chad’s hands and let him play it! That moment changed Chad’s life. He came 12
back years later after his financial situation changed a bit, told Jerry how that guitar impacted his life, and bought the guitar from Jerry. A few months later, Chad came back to the store with a picture of him on the cover of Guitar Player Magazine holding the 1954 Les Paul. Pretty awesome! Just like Russ said, it’s such simple actions, but Jerry just always makes everyone feel special and welcomed. Jerry would put the young guys to work tuning guitars, keeping everything clean and shiny, and other odd jobs, but there was always time to jam! One of the reasons this is lucky store #7 is it’s the first building that Jerry has ever owned. He has tenants upstairs whose rent helps pay for the expenses of the building, so he basically has very little to no overhead which is an awesome business plan. His shop is basically a glorified storage space for his
toys, if he happens to sell something great, but he doesn’t have the extreme pressure of always having to make sales to survive. Because of this awesome situation it helps him keep his costs down and his equipment affordable. He prides himself in the fact that most of the guitars in his shop are under $500, and a lot of them are really nice and even $250 or LESS! He wants that shop that a kid can mow grass for the Summer and come in and be able to afford a nice set up, or a place a parent can bring their kid and know that they can afford to leave with an instrument. Another cool part about Jerry’s store is everything can be played! Guitars aren’t locked up and untouched, it’s a come play it, check it out and see if it’s something that makes you happy kind of store. Jerry likes to make sure you get what you need and what you can afford. One group of young musicians came in and two of them were regulars, but one was a newbie. He just walked around in shock, checking it all out. Jerry does currently have over 200 guitars, 80-100 amps, gadgets, pedals, accessories, and he has full drum kits, ukuleles, banjos, violins, PA Systems, etc.. the list could go on forever! Don’t let the pictures fool you, his store looks small on the outside but once you get inside it goes on forever… Jerry does buy Used Equipment of all kinds, old toys, and even Coins! Basically, if you have something to sell, give Jerry a call. He’ll be open and honest and straight to the point. I had the opportunity to see a guy come in with a trade so I got to see how a trade goes down. In the end the customer and Jerry were both happy and now Jerry has another guitar
to add to his collection and the customer has cold hard cash and more closet space! The guitar you see on the cover is a 1956 Les Paul Special. Jerry has
quite the story about how he acquired that one, stop in and ask about it, I’m sure he’d love to tell you! Listening to all of the different customers coming in throughout the day I heard many reasons about why they keep coming back: the huge selection that varies all the time, the reliability that he’s actually open, the great customer service, and just the overall nice guy. Plus a big one, that was repeated quite a few times was, Jerry knows his stuff! Jerry has been playing guitar for over 50 years and still plays in a band at least once a month in his local church. He loves playing guitar and collecting cool things, and Guitars on George is definitely his dream job. Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! Welcome to Spring, which announces many tours coming this Summer. Last month began with hardcore hip hop artists Insane Clown Posse destroying Reverb in Reading, PA on March 8th. The infamous face-painted duo brought their elaborate stage performance per usual spraying the crowd with three to four hundred two-liter bottles of Faygo soda throughout the night. A concert experience like no other in which ICP raps and keeps it truly entertaining. I was fortunate to meet with the band before the show - who really spend quality time with their fans. Insane Clown Posse has recorded 17 records and earned two platinum and five gold albums. The entire catalog of the group has sold 6.5 million units in America as of April 2007. Lancaster brought its 3-day annual Roots & Blues Festival on March 9-11. An event that takes over downtown Lancaster and includes 9-venues and a hundred different bands. It was great to see Tommy Conwell & the Young Rumblers headline Saturday night’s festivities. The band was widely popular in the ‘90s and has been reuniting lately in their hometown of Philadelphia about once a year. This was a rare occasion for the band to play Lancaster. A great night of high energy blues and rock with the Young Rumblers all centered around Conwell’s guitar and voice. I wish to send festival organizer, Rich Ruoff, an immense thank-you for everything and a fantastic experience, congratulations on another successful year. Buckcherry returned to the mid-state to play HMAC on March 11. The California-based band has received commercial success with popular songs, “Crazy Bitch” “Lit Up” and “Sorry.” A very impressive large crowd filled the Capitol Room on a Sunday night with three opening bands. The band’s membership has seen much turnover and currently consists of one original member, singer Josh Todd. Buckcherry have released 7 studio albums since they formed in 1995. On March 13 Judas Priest began their latest tour “Firepower” at Mohegan Sun Arena in Wil-
kes-Barre. The band currently in its 49th year since their inception are frequently ranked as one of the greatest metal bands of all time and have sold over 50 million copies of their albums. Singer, Rob Halford, was incredible as always giving his operatic vocal style with impressive range from lower throaty growls to ear-piercing high screams with a strong vibrato. Judas Priest continue with their signature twin guitar sound despite losInsane Clown Posse ing members KK Downing and recently Glenn Tipton to Parkinson’s disease. However, Tipton appeared by the fifth concert date in New Jersey, playing the final 3-song encore. Judas Priest will conclude their tour on April 17 in Oregon. NATIONAL NEWS: Steven Tyler has lined up a solo tour in North America and Europe. Tyler is exploring his country music stylings on this tour and will have Nashville’s Loving Mary Band backing him. The singer released his solo album, “We’re All Somebody From Somehwere”, in July 2016. His band, Aerosmith, has only one commitment so far on May 5 at the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival Tyler’s tour is short consisting of eight shows in North America and seven in Europe. Steven Tyler visits Sands Casino in Bethlehem, PA on June 24. Culture Club has cooked up a summer tour with The B-52’s and special guest Tom Bailey from the Thompson Twins. Fans will hear great songs from the ‘80s like “Do You Really Want To Hurt Me,” Karma Chameleon” .. “Rock Lobster,” “Love Shack” and “Hold Me Now.” Culture Club lineup includes original members Roy Hay, Mikey Craig and Jon Moss as well as George Alan O’Dowd, aka Boy George. “We put together an amazing show that is going to be filled with hits and fabulous memories, we know it will be hands-down this summer’s best night out,” said Boy George in a statement. “The Life Tour” visits Vienna, VA on July 18 and Asbury Park, NJ on Aug 3. Legendary singer, Cher, has more Las Vegas dates as well as another run booked at the Theater At MGM Harbor near Washington DC. Her show described as “Classic Cher” visits the suburb of Oxon Hill, Md on Aug 4-5, 7, 9 & 11-12. Cher’s last visit at MGM Harbor packed 3 shows moving 7,342 tickets total for a collective gross of $1,386,765. Cher’s return to Vegas and the Park Theater begins Oct. 31 and includes Nov. 2-3, 7, 9-10, 14 & 16-17. Godsmack and Shinedown are co-headlining a tour across America this Summer. Like A Storm and Red Sun Rising provide support on select dates. Both bands are bringing new music to the tour. Godsmack’s first album in four years, ‘When Legends Rise’, arrives April 27 and Shinedown’s new album, ‘Attention Attention’ will drop May 4. “We really believe this could be a great moment in our band’s career and we plan on running on the road until at least fall of 2019,” Godsmack’s Sully Erna said in a statement. “We love the guys in Shinedown and we all go way back. There is a very strong mutual respect between our camps and we fell that this tour is going to be a must see!” The tour visits Camden, NJ on Aug 26 and Scranton, PA Aug 31. Joe Jackson’s July tour has the singer/songwriter visiting towns he never played, for the very first time. Impressive since Jackson has been touring for almost 40 Tommy Conwell & Chris Day years. Jackson’s announcement also promises “an unpredictable selection Josh Todd of Buckcherry of covers and brand new, never before performed originals.” Joe Jackson visits Harrisburg’s Whitaker Center on July 17. Eric Clapton announces his very short list of final North America dates for the year – two nights at New York’s Madison Square Garden Arena. Gary Clark, Jr. and Jimmie Vaughan will
appear as special guests Live Nation states that the Oct 6 & 7 evenings at Madison Square Garden are “the only two remaining North American shows this year.” Clapton last played The Garden in September 2017. As with almost all Clapton shows they were sell-out affairs, and moved more than 24,700 tickets for a total gross reaching almost $5.7 million. Robert Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters will rock through June. With special guests Elle King, Sheryl Crow, Jon Langford, Seth Lakeman, Jim James, Los Lobos and Lucinda Williams on select dates, the legendary Led Zeppelin frontman kicks off the fun in Atlanta on June 8 Plant sells an average of 3,000 tickets per show with an average gross of $165,000. Plant & The Sensational Space Shifters are touring in support of Carry Fire, released October 2017. They visit Merriweather Post Pavilion in Columbia, Md on June 12. Metallica will rumble across the continent beginning in September and will run through late March 2019. The North American leg is the latest outing that began in 2016 and became the 5th most successful tour in 2017, moving more than 1.6 million tickets for a total year’s gross of more than $153 million. Each show will include the DJ-fueled “Light It Up” preshow hosted by Jim Breuer. Metallica is playing many cities for the first time in 30 years. And they also visit Bryce Jordan Center in State

We have again arrived at that time of year where outdoor temperatures start to rise, snow melts a little quicker (such as the foot-plus snowfall that deluged my home area, Altoona, on the first day of Spring), and the first outdoor live music events of a new warm weather season begin to happen. Several outdoor concerts and events are already on my radar, making me more anxious for the temperatures to warm up! Again providing a big highlight to my winter was the 22nd annual Millennium Music Conference (MMC) in late February, happening at the Park Inn by Radisson Harrisburg West hotel complex in Mechanicsburg. One of the most valuable aspects of this conference for me each year is that it captures – through its panels, seminars, networking and keynote presentations – the current state of the music industry during any given year. By the end of MMC, I always come away with a clearer picture of where things are and where they are headed. The industry has changed vastly since this conference’s debut, and especially the definition of “making it.” The traditional goal for “making it” was to get signed to a major recording deal; but in the present day that is not necessarily the be-all end-all. Anything from getting a song to go “viral” online to passing an audition and achieving several weeks of success on a television talent show, to even being seen by the right person at the right time at an event such as the MMC (just ask Halestorm or Crobot) can punch a ticket to a performer’s music industry success. Both of this year’s MMC keynote interviews addressed this changing music industry climate, and how musicians can best position themselves to take advantage of it. As she was interviewed during the Friday keynote by Bob 94.9 radio’s Nancy Ryan, Diane Lockner – regional manager for Triple Tigers Records – offered advice to musicians about nurturing fan bases, effectively using social media to market and promote their music, staying persistent, and – most importantly – believing in themselves and their music. “If you’re true to yourself, if you really believe that you can do it, you can do it,” said Diane. “I continued on page 15..

think the most important thing is, believe in yourself…stay true to yourself. Don’t chase fads.” During the audience Q&A near the end of the interview, Diane was asked about ‘making it’ via the path of appearing on musical talent television shows like American Idol or The Voice and winning a recording contract. She responded that such contests present opportunities, but with a caveat. “It’s your ride, it’s your journey,” according to Diane. “If that’s how you think it’s gonna work for you and you get an audition, go for it. Every opportunity is an opportunity.” But she added, “If you win, know that you are an artist that has won a contest…What they don’t tell you is that said record label is only getting two percent. So, if you’re an American Idol winner and you’re signed to a major label like Universal Music Group, think about all the other artists who are on that label that are making that label a whole lot more money than two percent. Who do you think they are going to push more, they’re going to push the artists that are making them more money.” Saturday’s keynote featured Andrew Goodfriend of TKO booking agency in New York, interviewed by Reverbnation co-founder Lou Plaia. Andrew provided tips about getting the attention of agencies like TKO and landing spots in music festivals and high-profile events. He stressed the importance of an artist’s strong musical identity, cultivating a solid fan base, visibility, accessibility to information and music via social media and the internet, and persistence in pursuing opportunities. Of course, showcasing bands and artists were again a major part of my MMC experience. That experience began shortly after I first arrived on Thursday night, and attended the conference kickoff party at the host hotel’s Bravo 11 Mess Hall & Deck. On stage as I arrived was the same band I saw first during last year’s conference kickoff party, Saskatchewan, Canada rockers Autopilot. This trio again did nice work on their set, demonstrating a sound that merged elements of pop song craft with alternative and progressive-leaning arrangements. Autopilot’s tunes were catchy yet innovative, with interesting layering of guitars, soaring vocals and busy rhythms. Another international act then took the stage: Glasgow, Scotland’s Single By Sunday. Sporting brightly-colored hairdos, these young Scotsmen were fun, cutting loose with a raucous brand of melody-based punk/pop rock. Bright red-haired lead singer and rhythm guitarist Josh, blue-haired lead guitarist Jonny, purple-mopped bassist Jack and drummer Jorge fired up the crowd with their original song arsenal. Their songs were powered by rapid fire punk rhythms, but their melodies suggested they might have heard of some famous folks named John, Paul, George and Ringo. Their song hooks were infectious, and their choruses were easily memorable; they had the large audience cheering loudly by the end of their set. Closing out the night were Johnstown rockers Silver Screen, who gave a strong performance in their mission to ‘make grunge great again.’ Singer/rhythm guitarist Stephen Platt, lead guitarist Ben Ressler, bassist Alex Richardson and drummer Austin Danel mixed original songs and select covers, and as the last band of the night, got to play a lengthier set. They did songs off their debut EP ‘Inertia’ such as the slower “Codeine,” “Talk to Me” and “Labelled Off,” and they also did tunes from Kiss, Weezer, Silverchair, Jet, Nirvana and more. An electrical snafu late in their set prompted international cooperation between Silver Screen and Single By Sunday; after a breaker malfunctioned, drummer Austin started up a beat, while Josh and Jonny of Single By Sunday free-styled a rap on the microphone until power was fully restored! During the daytime conference Trade Show on both Friday and Saturday, I was able to see abbreviated acoustic sets on the PA Musician Day Stage by many of this year’s showcasing performers. Hampshire’s Epic Season…and MMC frequent flyer Chris Whitmer. Among my favorite highlights from the Day Stage included the spirited and adventurous music of New Jersey’s Random Hubiak…Upbeat music and a dance clinic from Harrisburg’s D-Bo…the dazzling string-bending and fingerstyle of Harrisburg-based singer and guitarist Suzi Brown…youthful Canadian lady performers Girl Pow-r (more on them later) and the return of the rollicking keyboard music of Columbus, Ohio’s Bill Kurzenberger. And as the Day Stage concluded on Saturday, Jeannine Higgins’ self-titled CD was drawn from my radio show dropbox, so Jeannine won a guest appearance on the March 25 edition of Qwik-Rock’s “Homegrown Rocker” program! Multiple showcase performances happened on both Friday and Saturday night, as nearly 300 different bands and artists performed throughout the Harrisburg area. My Friday showcase adventures began at the aforementioned Bravo 11 at the host hotel. The first band up was Added Color from Brooklyn, New York. Four members strong, this group provided an intriguing blend of funk, rock, alternative and even progressive elements in their original sound. They delivered often intriguing song arrangements anchored in tight grooves as they performed original songs plus a cover of Rage Against the Machine’s “Bulls on Parade.” Their instrumental skills were strong; I especially noted bassist Danny Dahan, who enthusiastically invested into each groove he played. Next up was the two-man acoustic edition of Baltimore’s Skinny Is Green, who played a selection of original numbers, including some from their forthcoming new album coming out this month. I then headed to Harrisburg’s Pourhouse on Derry, arriving just before my first look at Chris Rattie & the New Rebels. I was anxious to see this latest chapter in Chris’ musical story, and it is a rowdy one. Chris on vocals and guitar, guitarist Brian Cleary, bassist Jeff Downing and drummer Forrest Schwartz quickly awakened the Friday night crowd with the sharp-witted opener “Country Boy” off the group’s recently-issued album Porch. Chris and company mixed edgy Americana-rock songs from the new album with some of his past material. His new songs included “Prisoner 743” and “My Mountain,” and the group did songs from Chris’ 2013 All These Things CD such as “So Long” and “Hotel By the Highway.” Chris sang with a clear, authoritative voice, and his songs displayed heart and purpose. He and the New Rebels generated strong cheers from the crowd by the close of their set. Next was Bowie, Maryland’s Wise Eyes, who demonstrated their brand of soulful rock. These guys showed a tight and together sound, sturdy melodies and some freewheeling jams as their set progressed. Among their songs was a new reggae-toned original called “Diamond,” and a fast-moving take on CCR’s “Green River.” Again showcasing at MMC was Jake Tavill & the Indigo Child Blues Band, who closed the night with their intriguing blend of sounds. Singing and playing keys, Jake and his band – sax player Michael Squillace, bassist Casey O’Connell and drummer Ben Ley – played several numbers off Jake’s new Twisted Ideology album such as the feisty set opener “Legs in a Twist,” the Motown-meets-Tin Pan Alley number “It Don’t Matter” and “Gold.” They also broke out a few older originals, plus strong takes on Sly & the Family Stone’s “If You Want Me to Stay” and Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Jake’s innovative song arrangements, soulful vocals, and the fun spirit he and his band exhibited throughout their set made for a joyful close of the night. My Saturday night showcase adventure again started at Bravo 11, with York rockers Small Town Titans convening their performance shortly following Andrew Goodfriend’s keynote interview. Singer/bassist Phil Freeman, guitarist Ben Guiles and drummer Jonny Ross sounded sharp as they fired through their original song arsenal, opening with “Wreck” and hard-hitting numbers such as “We Owe You the Truth,” “Sky High,” the new composition “Junkie for You,” “Me, Myself & Monster” (featured on this year’s MMC compilation CD), “Party In Hell,” “9 to 5,” their take on Soundgarden’s “Spoonman” and more. Phil delivered a commanding voice and charisma up front, and these Titans were constant action as they maneuvered about the stage. I then headed to my second showcase destination of the night, the Keystone Musical Arts Center in Camp Hill, where youthful talent was being celebrated. Three different performances at this showcase proved The Who’s adage that “the kids are alright,” as teenaged performers delivered jaw-dropping performances. Performing as I arrived was 14-year-old North Carolina guitar shredder Johnny Zostant, who demonstrated nonstop fretboard pyrotechnics on original compositions and select covers. along a backing track, Johnny’s fingers were nonstop as he delivered arpeggios and other rapid fire solo work. The clincher for me was one of his covers, as Johnny did the Jeff Beck Group’s “Going Down” – great to witness a young talent tapping into the Jeff Beck catalog! Next up was a group I saw earlier in the day on the PA Musician Day Stage, Canada’s Girl Pow-R. Five women strong this night (their total ensemble numbers 13), this teenaged group sang, played instruments and danced on a selection of pop/dance covers and original songs, with each member introducing a song while sharing a positive thought or encouraging message. Among their originals was their current single “Krisi” and “Stronger Than Yesterday,” and the group covered hits from Avril Lavigne, Kelly Clarkson, Katy Perry, Alicia Keys, Lady Gaga and more. Closing this showcase was teenaged PA jazz fusion trio Teen Town. These youngsters – Connor Rohrer on keys, Gabriel Severn on bass and Logan Bedard on drums – were amazing as they showed incredible instrumental skills on jazz numbers from Weather Report, Tribal Tech, Adam Nitti and more. They improvised, soloed off one another, and had fun exploring the musical cosmos as the audience cheered on. This led to the finale, as Johnny Zostant joined the group on a funky jam, while the members of Girl Pow-R danced along. My MMC 2018 experience then concluded at the Grotto Pub in Enola. I had hoped to see Indiana, PA bluesmen the Jukehouse Bombers, but only got to see half of their last song, as they started performing early when the first band of the night didn’t show up. The Hall Williams Band from the Baltimore/D.C. area was next, and they stunned with their mixture of blues, funk, soul and jazz flavors. Namesake Hall Williams on guitar and lead vocals, bassist Lorenzo Sands, keyboardist Justin Taylor and drummer Rodney Dunton delivered stirring grooves and superb musicianship, capped by one of the best versions of Neil Young’s “Cortez the Killer” I have ever witnessed – Lorenzo’s bass solo fireworks had to be seen/heard to be believed! Annapolis, Maryland’s Rickshaw Lizard then closed out the night with their hearty mixture of groove-laden funk, rock, blues and jams. punched out a variety of sounds on their original set, elevating their songs into heated jams along the way. They did numbers from their Move With Me EP such as “Rick’s Rumble,” “Kudzu” and “Notion,” plus several other tunes as well, and they inspired more dance floor action as their set progressed. Closer to home, musicians, friends and fans last month remembered an area musician and colleague, Terry Croft, with a benefit show to help with his final costs at the Altoona Grand Hotel. Ed N’Born and R2B2 kicked off the afternoon, before Rokkandy took the stage. Singer/keyboardist Patricia McConnell, guitarist/singer Bob DeArmitt, bassist/singer Kelly Montgomery and drummer Doug Stephens generated a strong set of classic rock, pop, country and dance favorites. Rokkandy kept the musical action constant as they did numbers from Young MC, Jimmy Eat World, Styx, Luke Bryan, Walk the Moon, 4 Non Blondes and more. Pat and Bob alternated most of the singing duties, and the group pulled off some surprises, such as Toni Basil’s “Mickey,” the Bob-fronted take on Foreigner’s “Waiting for a Girl Like You,” and the Pat-fronted version of AC/DC’s “It’s a Long Way to the Top (If You Wanna Rock’n’Roll).” I then joined my Backyard Rockers brethren – singer/guitarist Rich Dasch and guitarist, bassist and singer Mo Yon – as we provided acoustic favorites from Steve Earle, Neil Young, The Band, Elton John, Tom Petty, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and more. Mama Corn then brought their stringed sounds to the stage, mixing original tunes with their diverse range of grassed-up covers. Mama Corn brought smiles as they did favorites such as their take on Banjo & Sullivan’s “I’m Home Getting Hammered While She’s Out Getting Nailed,” Crosby Stills & Nash’s “Helplessly Hoping,” original tunes like “The Hanging of Alfred Andrews” and “Another Couple Days” and more. And providing much of the backline this day, Bone Jacked closed the benefit strong with their set of classic-rocking favorites. Decked in clown shoes and partial clown make-up as he served double-duty with the ToonTown Klowns this day, new singer Dave Mitchell sang on the first several tunes, joining guitarist Chris Guella, bassist Dave Collins and drummer/show organizer Terry Wilt. Jacob Baskin fronted the group the rest of the way, belting out voice on tunes from Tom Petty, Doobie Brothers, Counting Crows, Hootie & the Blowfish, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Robert Palmer and more. When all was said and done, more than $1,000 was raised.

The Central PA punk rock scene has remained steadily vibrant over the years, and the area’s punk musicians celebrated that vibrancy with last month’s second annual “Who Says It’s Dead” Punkfest at McGarvey’s. Seven area punk bands brought their visceral brands of music to the stage. State College’s Owned By A**holes and Altoona’s Railroad City Murder Machines launched the event and had performed prior to my arrival. X’s For Eyes was wrapping up their torrid set as I got there, with Lose The Name then taking the stage. Reconvening last year, the roster of singer/guitarist Brandon Kane, guitarist/singer Jimmy Gehrdes, bassist Brad Davis and drummer Toby Hunter mixed up older and newer high-velocity punk anthems that kept the crowd excited and turbulent. State College favorites The Whatleys maintained the momentum, slamming down their reckless abandon punk anthems. Singer/bassist Eddie Fraud, singer/guitarist Hiro, guitarist TJ Fadehawk and drummer JLaw fired off tunes from their American Party CD such as “Go For Broke,” “Balloon Drops (Over Confetti Falls)” and “CJ Ramone,” plus other favorites like “My Way Home.” For the next band, The Flannels, it was the swan song for frontman John Brehm, who departs the group to devote time to family and career. John, guitarists James McNulty and Mike Lanzendorfer, bassist Chet Lafferty and drummer Josh Ryan let fly with their melody-driven, high-velocity take on punk, doing numbers such as “Be continued on page 18....

Closing out the show was The Snipped, performing their punk-rocking “dadcore.” What is “dadcore,” you ask? ‘Old’ guys playing punk rock music, and expressing anger at things dads might be mad about – such as one of their songs that vented punk rock venom at getting stuck behind a school bus while you’re already running late for work. Singer/guitarist Mike Wax, guitarist Jeff Reid, bassist Rik Golden and drummer Justin Burket presented several such original numbers, plus a few older punk rock covers during their set. These enthusiastic performances and the large, brisk attendance to support them showed that area punk rock is certainly not dead, and the “Who Says It’s Dead?” punk fest proved that the spirit of punk will live on in these parts for a long time to come. The Arena in State College and 105.9 Qwik-Rock commenced their second annual Battle of the Bands competition at The Arena last month. The competition features five preliminary battles, with each winner advancing to the finals on April 14, and the top three winners scoring prizes. I caught the second preliminary competition, featuring performances from four band hopefuls. From Down The Road launched this night’s battle with their unique mix of styles, spanning modern and classic rock flavors, ska, reggae, punk rock and more. Singer Guy Mauro, guitarist Ben Eberhart, bassist Eric Baker and drummer Tyler McEvoy mixed original tunes and select covers from Jimi Hendrix, Green Day and others. Pittsburgh’s Forsaken By Society stepped up the intensity with their set of brute force metalcore. Frontman Matt Micenko, guitarist Allan Trail and drummer E.J. Novak unleashed furious original numbers such as “Self Destruct,” the anti-hate “Back Down,” “Breathe” and more. The night’s third act, Scranton’s Traverse the Abyss, also escalated the intensity with their blend of power metal and hardcore, performing original songs from their CD The Gamble of Life plus newer numbers. Singer Eric Abyss took his performance to the crowd, often venturing off the stage to engage with observers around the room. Flanking him were guitarists Mike White and Matt Mierzejweski, bassist Mike Bieniecki and drummer Nathan Cardona. And Altoona’s Dilemma closed out the Battle with their presenta-
tion, which mixed elements of punk, alternative and postpunk. Singers and guitarists Micah Button and Devin Conrad, bassist Duane Ferrell and drummer Joel Kyle performed original numbers and their take on Nirvana’s “Lithium.” After scores from the three judges were tallied and averaged, Traverse the Abyss scored highest and moves on to the finals. Also at The Arena, I caught up with the Chris Bell Band early last month. Assisted by Nashville’s Joey Dotson on drums, Brian McHugh on bass and Jonathan Phillippi on rhythm guitar, Chris demonstrated supreme skills on the guitar strings, delivering fiery lead solos throughout the night on a variety of country and Americana favorites. Chris and company did numbers from Jason Aldean, Kip Moore, Toby Keith, George Strait, Dwight Yoakam, Blake Shelton, Zac Brown Band, Chris Stapleton, Travis Tritt, Old Crow Medicine Show and more. They also broke out a few of Chris’ original country compositions, such as “(That’s How) Country Girls Do It.” The band was strong and the music pacing was tight, and despite a lighter attendance this night, Chris and his band still played for broke and left it all on the stage – they even played almost 30 minutes past their scheduled end time of 1 a.m. to give the fans their money’s worth. For upbeat country and excellent guitar fireworks, make the effort to see the Chris Bell Band when they hit stages in these parts – you won’t be disappointed! Pittsburgh’s Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers visited McGarvey’s stage for the first time last month. As they have demonstrated the previous times I have seen them (at the Smoked Country Jam and Windber’s Bluegrass In The Park festivals), the Stragglers showed abundant musical skills as they blended folk, bluegrass and string music with jazz-styled improvisation on a selection of original numbers, including a few from their latest CD, White Lightning Road. All five musicians – singer/guitarist Gary Antol, singer/fiddle player Libby Eddy, mandolinist Ray Bruckman, dobro player Jody Mosser and upright bassist Evan Bell – displayed precision on their respective instruments, delivering exciting solos and interaction on each number. Some of their numbers this night included the CD title track “White Lightning Road,” “Things Take Time,” “Tumbleweed” and “In Harmony,” and they also did a refreshing take on “I Know You
Rider.” Along the way, Gary shared some humorous insight on the actual location of Jakob’s Ferry (a blink-your-eyes-andyou’ll-miss-it landmark in Greene County). The Jakob’s Ferry Stragglers will release their new CD, Poison River, shortly and will play dates in North Carolina later this month, gearing up for a busy summer season of bluegrass and music festivals – including Smoked Country Jam in June and Johnstown’s Flood City Music Festival in early August. Work duties limited my Irish-themed merriment during St. Patrick’s season last month, and I spent the latter part of St. Patrick’s night witnessing Nashville-based singer and songwriter Nathan Kalish and his group, the Lastcallers, at McGarvey’s. Flanked by Karen Frederick on upright bass and Jackie Ray Daniels on fiddle, Nathan introduced his brand of grooving Americana string music, demonstrating a calm and sturdy voice as he sang original songs from his latest CD, I Want to Believe, plus select covers from roots performers like Gram Parsons and more. Given the St. Patrick’s occasion, Nathan and the Lastcallers also broke out versions of the traditional “Irish Washerwoman” and Guy Clark’s “Dublin Blues.” I also caught two-thirds of a triple-bill at McGarvey’s early last month, seeing Making State and Walkney in action. Dilemma started off the night, and Making State was just under way as I entered the building. Singer Nick Myers, guitarist Sam Magliaro, bassist Billy Vaughn and drummer Jaymeson Rowles hammered original tunes that blended elements of alternative, pop, punk and classic hard rock. They did a few songs from their debut EP Waiting for Signals such as “All I Need,” as well as a bunch of newer songs. Nick’s voice was in good form, and he demonstrated confidence and swagger to engage the crowd. The rest of the band sounded tight, and Making State drew cheers and good crowd response. Walkney – a.k.a. singer and guitarist Derek Mrdjenovich – ended the night with his solo acoustic set, introducing a number of new songs and his own update of Amy Winehouse’s “Valerie.” At press time, Derek has been auditioning for and being spotted on the new season of American Idol, and was headed to Hollywood for the latest development in that journey. continued on page 18...

MASTER SWORD – SHADOW AND STEEL (no label) Washington, D.C.’s Master Sword first came together in 2013, and issued a 2015 EP called Epoch. Former Lies, Inc. and Nitecast singer Lily (Taylor) Hoy joined the group early last year, and Master Sword has subsequently issued their ambitious first full-length album, Shadow and Steel. Lily, lead guitarist Corey Garst, keyboardist and rhythm guitarist Matt Farkas, bassist Shawn Staub and drummer Andy Stark theme the album around the video game The Legend of Zelda. Music from the game inspires Master Sword’s blend of power and progressive metal music, as well as the lyrical storylines. As such, the lyrics might bewilder those not familiar with Legend of Zelda or its premise. But the album’s musical content and firepower ultimately win the day; lavish, dynamic classical
metal song arrangements, topped with Lily’s operatic, powerful and majestic voice. Her presence becomes the focal point, and her ability to vary intensity between tranquil calm and explosive fury keeps the album exciting from start to end. “Behind the Mirror” provides the album’s charging, high-powered opening chapter, informed by the classic power metal traditions of Iron Maiden and Judas Priest. The anthemic “Let Me Show You The Night” showcases Lily’s escalating vocal intensity and towering vibrato. Master Sword crafts darker, deeper and lengthier opuses with “Tower of Stone,” the Dream Theater-toned “Kiss of the Flame” with its shifting melody and side journeys, “Beneath the Skin” and the funereal closer “Master of the Seas.” “Sanctuary” follows an unconventional, creeping melody that evolves into a powerful climax, and Master Sword gives the Zelda instrumental theme “Hyrule Field” a crunchy metal makeover. This band knows its musical turf, and their dynamic arrangements sound big and mighty, with guitar riffs, rapid fire solo work, booming drum beats and expansive keyboard fills bringing fullness and depth to their sound. The mix is crisp and full, bringing forth Master Sword’s full thunder and edge. Shadow and Steel is an impressive debut, and fans of progressive and power metal – whether Zelda enthusiasts or neophytes – will find plenty to celebrate here. LIZZIE AND THE YEEHAW GANG – ROAD TO HOME (no label) When Bedford County Americana musician Lizzie Yee and her group heard fans cheering “Yee-haw!” during their early performances, the group adopted the name Lizzie and the Yeehaw Gang. Now six “womyn” strong, Lizzie and the Yeehaw Gang have unveiled their first full-length CD, Road to Home, named after their 21-day cross-country performance tour last July which took them to Michigan, Ohio, Wisconsin, Indiana and Illinois. (As of press time, the group is currently wrapping up a west coast tour that has taken them to Texas, New Mexico, Arizona and California.) Lizzie on lead vocals and various stringed instruments, her daughter LiliBird Yee on guitar and stand-up bass, Sally Starflower on vocals, mandolin and hand drum, Jackie Kriner on vocals and guitar, Sandy Howsare on vocals and bass, and Karen Semanek on vocals, fiddle and snare perform a blend of Appalachian and traditional folk and bluegrass over Road to Home’s ten tracks. Two of the songs are originals; the leadoff track “Gypsy Way” celebrates life on the road, while the title track “Road to Home” yearns to get back home from that life on the road. Lizzie and the Yeehaw Gang offer their rustic takes on vocal numbers such as the ever-popular “Wagon Wheel,” as well as traditional folk/bluegrass staples such as “Going Down the Road Feeling Bad,” “Nine Pound Hammer,” “Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms” and “Rough and Rocky.” The group also cuts loose on some instrumental numbers, including the traditional “Cripple Creek,” “Lorena” and ‘Dr. Banjo’ Peter Wernick’s “Armadillo Breakdown.” The group’s pacing is gentle and relaxed, resulting in a vibe that feels like a friendly back porch bluegrass jam. Lizzie sings with an authentic, old-timey Appalachian folk style, and the basic song arrangements allow all of these musicians to intertwine and shine on their respective instruments. Recorded, engineered and mixed by Lizzie, Sally and Karen, Road to Home sounds live and in the moment, with all instruments and voices sounding clear in the mix. Lizzie and the Yeehaw Gang celebrate tradition and exude an authentic sound and atmosphere with Road to Home, offering a pleasant, pastoral listen. LADY – DELIRIUM OF NEGATION (no label) Founded in 2014 by the husband-andwife tandem of bassist/singer Greg “Mudzo” Mudzinski and singer Alicia Marie Starr, Lady formed as a band spinoff from State College-based theatre company Love & Light Productions. As such, the group incorporates a number of musical theatrical elements into the blistering rock of their debut album, Delirium of Negation. Joining Greg and Alicia are vocalists Julia Wilson and Kylie Bumbarger, guitarist Kevin Patterson and drummer Kyle Haust. Over Delirium’s nine tracks, Lady mixes theatrical song and vocal arrangements with hard-hitting, punk-driven rock – resulting in a feverish, action-packed joyride. Blistering punk rhythms mesh with two and three-part vocal harmonies, Queenlike pseudo-operatic song structures and more, as the album follows darker lyrical themes of breaking rules, living life for broke and resisting a corrupt and evil world. The opening salvo “Take It to the Grave” establishes this theme and sets the tone for the album, with both Greg and Alicia alternating lead singing duties along a hard punk-fueled arrangement that culminates in threepart harmony choruses. Kevin’s guitar solo fireworks help usher in Lady’s charged ode to Irish mythology, “Morrigan,” while the rapid fire “It’s About Time” serves up a call for action. Lady displays their depth and adventurism on several tracks, including the dynamic “Coffins and Crowbars” with its detailed vocal arrangements, and the shifting tempos and timings of “Hands Up, Chin Down.” The group slows the tempo for the thunderous and anthemic “Lullaby,” and sets an initial acoustic tone for “Body of Work.” Lady goes for broke both vocally and instrumentally, not holding anything back over the album’s duration. The arrangements are fresh and distinctive for each song, keeping this album intriguing from start to end. Lady’s unique blend of punk rock aggression and theatrical vocals and arrangements makes Delirium of Negation a unique and innovative listen. I have decided that it is time to let it go to someone else who has a desire to promote and cover the great music scene throughout Pennsylvania. The last few years my heart is just not into it anymore. I am very thankful for all the energy and time many people have helped in keeping the publication going for without them it wouldn’t even be what it is today. I am 64, going to be 65 this year and feel it is time to let it go and focus on our local Shopper’s Remedy. It would be great if someone has the money and time and interest to keep it going. The Pennsylvania Musician Magazine has a lot of potential and we have created a very good website presence that is updated monthly and a facebook that is quite popular with over 6,000 likes. I am very thankful for ALL the wonderful support we have had throughout the industry for 36 Years. We will do two more issues, May & June, and then I will be focusing on The Shopper’s Remedy and expanding those pages into our original ideas of serving our local community that we live in. If you want to get in the last two issues that are sure to be “Collector’s Items” the Deadline for May will be Friday, April 20th and June’s deadline would be Monday, May 21st. It is very hard to let something go that I have worked on so hard and so long I believe that we have made a difference for many musicians over the years and I know that we have not done the music scene and all the talented musicians throughout Pennsylvania justice in the coverage that they should have had. Pennsylvania has talent throughout the state that never gets recognized but none the less they continue to let the music inside of them flow out to bless us all.
