Holy cow it’s December! I can’t believe that the holiday season is upon us. Time is just flying by this year, November was a busy month. I spent most of my time rushing around taking care of all the things I had planned to do this fall. Did I get them all done? No, but I did put a big dent into the list of things to do. Gathering firewood and getting the place ready for the winter months takes some time and energy but I did manage to get out and see some bands as well. On the 16th we headed over to the Laurel Run Lodge aka Chick’s for a night of ‘outlaw country’. When we got there the place was packed. Its clear that people are starting to realize the talent that Zach King and the folks at Laurel Run Lodge are bringing in to our area. We found some parking and then headed in to catch the last couple songs of local legend Chubediah. It was clear when we opened the door that the crowd was already warmed up and ready for a night of stellar music. Witty song writing with some gritty lyrics had the crowd hootin’ and hollerin’ after every song. Chubediah did the locals proud and fit right into the mix with the seasoned Nashville veterans. Next up was Grady Hoss & The Sidewinders. It is to be noted that The Sidewinders backed up the first three bands and they never missed a beat. They did an awesome job fitting in with each set. It was even the first time they ever played with Chubediah. The talent that they put forth on stage was impressive and watching them jam along with each band was super cool. Grady Hoss, a tall slender fellow, transforms when he puts on the cowboy hat and instantly draws the crowd in. Grady has a classic country/ bluegrass style playing classics and some newer covers like his country rendition of the National’s “Blood Buzz Ohio”. You can check out the song over on his facebook page @gradyhossandthesidewinders. Third band of the night was one that I have been wanting to see for awhile now. Rylan Brooks, the duo of Nate Rylan and Chris Brooks. I’m not sure how best to describe these guys. I feel like in another life I could have been out in the woods, with my truck stuck in the mud, talking shit and drinking beers with these guys till the wee hours of the night. The kinda of guys you find at a backwoods garage playing tunes around an old wood stove to keep warm. With songs like ‘Gunslinger,’ ‘Nobody Loves Me Like Myself’, ‘Last Night I Tried Jesus’ and many more spirited tunes. These guys just plain rocked it, backed up by the Sidewinders for the night they really put on a show. The kind of music that hooks you in with the melody and keeps you there with original and creative lyrics. Afterwards I got to talk with the duo and they were very excited to meet some fans and even hooked me up with
a Cd. Great band, I highly recommend you head over to Rylanbrooks.com and get yourself a copy of the CD “Half Wild.” It’s been wearing out the laser on my Cd player since I got it. If you get a chance these guys are a must see when they hit our area again. The fourth band of the night was Dallas Moore and his sidekick Lucky Chucky aka the Jersey Devil, The String Strangler and The Snatch Wrangler. These two have been playing together for close to 23 years and you could tell it. They took off and never looked back with songs like “Raisin Hell and Slinging Gravel”. A fast paced outlaw country song about ripping it up 90,000 miles on a 2000 Road King. Lots of great guitar playing from both of these two taking turns banging out the leads with Chuck really slamming out some clean runs. Overall it was an amazing night of music packed into the best kept secret in Perry County, The Laurel Run Lodge aka Chick’s. Hats off to Zach King for all he does for the local music scene. My favorite show of the month was not what some would expect. It happened shortly after Thanksgiving dinner when The Mighty Whitey backed by David Greene took the stage. Or more like the living room at Rachel’s lol. Sure it wasn’t KIX at XL live or Slayer at Hershey but to me it was far better. Hearing classic’s like, ‘All Along the Watch Tower’, ‘Hotel California’, and ‘Curtains In The Clouds’ (a Whitey original) really made my holiday. All while I relaxed on the couch reading the newspaper while the rest of the family was playing games and goofing off. It sure is nice to have music as part of your family gatherings and it has just always been this way for the Noll’s. Getting to hear the old man sing is always a treat. After his cancer treatment he was unable to sing for a couple years and while his voice is not as commanding as it was in his youth, he has been able to regain most of his singing skills and at the ripe age of 78 he is still learning new things about music. His latest thing is the discovery of Youtube. Sorta crazy but now dad has a background band he can jam along to that helps keep his leads fresh. You could really hear it while he jammed out with David. His leads were on point and he had a lot of new tricks up his sleeves. Way to go Dad, keep rocking, we all love you! December is stacking up with some great music in the area. Racehorse Tavern has a full lineup starting with Paddywak on the 6th, National recording artist Willow Hill with Joey Harkum on the 20th and the ever popular Blues Vultures on the 28th. Featuring Ronnie Younkins of KIX. Reverb in Reading has a full month with Riff Raff December 13th, then Buckcherry on the 14th. Backed up by One Day Waiting, Dawn’s Divide, World of Cold, Triple Addiction, and Someday You’ll Know Us. Followed the next night on the 15th with Morbid Angel. The Warwick has bands every Friday and Saturday with DMC Duo on the 6th, Berkley on the 7th and Brett Alexander on the 20th. For fans of Disturbed there is a new tribute band”Stricken” hitting the scene on December 28th at Fat Daddys.

A couple “tricks” in and you too will be amazed. Like really amazeball stuff here I’m not kidding. Don’t miss this chance to catch him local. There will also be live music provided by Michael Cullin. Another HUGE night at HMAC is going down on the 28th. 717 Entertainment is bringing in OZZY tribute band Bark At The Moon. These guys have been making quite a stir all over the state and are bringing the madness to HMAC with local heavy hitters STEEL. This is going to be one to mark in your books if you’re a serious OZZY fan. Why, you might ask? Well Bark At The Moon wants Harrisburg to see how serious they are so they are giving away a pair of tickets to see OZZY in Hershey on June 6th 2020! Yep and all you have to do is attend the show on the 28th for your chance to win tickets to see the ‘Lord of Darkness’. OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
December.. it’s hard for me to believe it’s already time for my December article. Only one more month of music and shenanigans and it’s going to be 2020. Make sure and check out all of the ads throughout this issue to see where all of the best New Year’s Eve parties will be. Before I look to far into the future, let me focus on what I did see throughout November. I’m glad to have The Warwick Hotel as an advertiser so I can see their schedule of music on Fridays and Saturdays, plus their music is from 8-11 so they are a great place to stop at early and still have plenty of time to go out somewhere else. Friday when I was out delivering the magazines I noticed our other new advertiser DMC Duo was at The Warwick so I rushed around to make sure I got there in time to hear the last set of DMC Duo’s show. Darrell and Marisa have been playing all over the eastern half of PA. I’m impressed with their willingness to travel anywhere for a show! Marissa has an amazing range of female powerhouses she can cover, everything from Alanis, to Madonna, to Fleetwood Mac, and beyond! It’s also nice because Darrell also sings lead on a few faves from anyone from Garth, to Lee Brice, to Georgia Satellites. They’ve both been playing out live in bands/ duos for over 20 years so between the two of them they can both cover plenty of music to keep you entertained all night long. Check out DMC Duo’s ad in this issue for all of the details on how to get them booked at your venue or private event. The following weekend started at XL Live for Vixen! Opening for Vixen was a local, original rock band, Eternal Frequency. They were playing mostly originals, and they rocked every single one! Emelle, their lead vocalist reminds you of a young Lzzy Hale, just cranking out the vocals. It definitely made me realize why she was on the ballot for the best female vocalist on the CPMAs. Plus the band as a whole was also nominated

for the Best New Band/Artist, Album of the Year, and Song of the Year! They are definitely breaking into the Central PA scene and they are not going unnoticed. I’m sure you will see a lot more of Eternal Frequency in the very near future. The headlining act Vixen was the original Vixen! They are the only all-female hard rock band from the 80’s who sold over a Million Albums, and that six #1 Videos on MTV, and they had four songs in Billboard’s
top 100! They had all original members except their new guitar player, unfortunately their original guitar member Jan Kuehnemund tragically lost her battle with cancer and passed away in 2013. After she passed, they decided it was time to rock stages again! They totally killed it on XL’s stage. It was an amazing show and one I’m glad I didn’t miss. Vixen is a perfect example how many bands come through our area at any of our amazing local venues, XL Live, HMAC, Chameleon, Reverb, etc.. I know I personally need to pay attention and google bands when I don’t recognize their name, because every time I do check out any bands passing through I’m always thoroughly impressed. The following weekend I started out early to see Olivia Farabaugh at The Warwick Hotel. Olivia made it to the Blind Auditions on The Voice, that means she one of 96 out of 40,000 auditions. Unfortunately, the judges didn’t turn their chairs, but it was still a once in a lifetime experience. Olivia was chosen to go to a private audition from her Reverbnation page. She didn’t even apply, they just randomly chose her and she got a call that she thought was of course fake, but it turned out being legit! Pretty amazing experience! Olivia is a super fun performer. She has tons of energy and her songs are amazing. I couldn’t help but buy her CD be the end of her show. So many fans were requesting her originals which is always a good thing. When people requested Shallow my friend Chad stepped in as Bradley. It was awesome of her to include Chad in her show! Chad and I were only going to stay for a set, but we wound up staying for her entire show! After Olivia we headed down the street to Chick’s for a special treat, of Green Eggs Duo. It was just Brian and Brad playing acoustic music. It was a great way to end the night with some awesome sing-a-longs. I haven’t seen any form of Green Eggs for a very long time, but anytime I do, I’m always impressed, and always guaranteed a good time! The following night I headed down to Racehorse Tavern for Penntera!! It has been entirely too long since I saw these guys and it was their 1st show at the Racehorse so I wanted to head down there to support them. When I arrived Thousand Pound Destruction was on stage. They play their own originals and covers and they definitely know how to get a party started! They are getting ready to release a new CD, “Straight to the Grave”. If you are a thrash metal fan, you definitely want to check these guys out! Next up was Penntera. They had no problem at keeping the party going, full steam ahead! It was awesome to see them rockin’ again in full Penterra fashion. The whole band has an intense amount of energy Zach & Pat of Penntera from beginning to end. Jason is a ma-
niac literally flying through the crowd making sure everyone feels like part of the show. Mix that in with Pat’s insane guitar licks, Zach’s sick bass lines, and Space’s thunderous drums, and it’s a party you won’t soon forget! Penntera is playing all of the state of PA and beyond throughout December and January. Make sure and check out their schedule in this issue and get out there and bang your head and have a rockin’ good time! Kudos to Racehorse Tavern for giving all genres a music a place to play. And kudos to Missy Jo from Mad Hatter Entertainment for organizing such an amazing show! The next night was a special Thursday night show at XL Live for Molly Hatchet. Opening the night was LeadFoot and Road Case. It was funny that this same day I also had a Facebook Memory from 9 years ago when I was partying on stage with Kip and Pat at a LeadFoot show at Sorb’s in Liverpool. A venue that’s probably been gone just about as long. LeadFoot has definitely seen venues close and new venues open, but one thing for sure is they keep rockin’ right through it! Their 80s metal is to the pedal and I don’t see them slowing down anytime soon! If you like to headbang, jump, and dance LeadFoot would be the perfect band for you! Road Case has had a few awesome opportunities to open for bands at XL Live, and opening for Molly Hatchet was definitely one of them! Road Case continues to rock every stage they step on! It’s awesome to see them on a big stage where they can easily whip their hair around and have a good time. Road Case is still that band that says they play all of the cool Rock N’ Roll songs no one else plays, and that is so true! Their shows usually consist of quite a few newbies saying, “Holy Sh*t! I love this song!” It’s all stuff you will recognize and love with their crazy guitar harmonies and solos, and so much more! Molly Hatchet took the stage and the crowd was fully primed and ready to party. I heard lots of conflicting reports about how Molly Hatchet wasn’t worth it with only one remaining original member, but this isn’t the first band Al / Defiant at Racehorse to pass through that has had major changes and still rocked the place, and Molly Hatchet was no different. They played a lot of their original songs, but also quite a few new ones. They just released on November 29th a ‘live album’ called “Battleground”. They want to be able to show to their fans that even though they’ve been around for over 40 years, they still got it! Everyone I talked to about the show really enjoyed it. The following night I took another trip down to a special show at Racehorse Tavern for Defiant and their fundraiser for Pitties. Love.Peace. I unfortunately missed the first two bands, but I did make it in time for the last few songs of Rise Among Rivals. As continued on page 10....

soon as I walked in people were telling me how awesome these guys were, and I definitely agree. They came up from Baltimore. I feel like I saw them before, but they were definitely entertaining, with crisp and clear vocals and plenty of energy! They have a great video on their Facebook page called “Dealing with the Devil”. You can find them on Spotify and all of your other favorite listening platforms. Check them out!! The last band of the night was Defiant. I feel like I see these guys a lot, but honestly it’s been a few months! It’s awesome to see how far they’ve come in just a little over a year! This was a very special show for them, they had lots of tricks up their sleeves. At one point Paul came out to sing lead on a very intense cover of the Eurythmics “Sweet Dreams” in a very “Defiant” way! Al’s wife came up to a song with him, and Joe even took the mic for a song. Overall, they played their longest set ever, and everyone LOVED it! Plus, at the end of the night Pitties.Love.Peace got a great donation to help them rescue more Pitties! It was yet another great night at Racehorse Tavern, make sure and check out Defiant and Racehorse Tavern’s ad in this issue and get out there and support them both! The last night for this article is Thanksgiving Eve. I wasn’t going to go out since I found out at the last minute that I was hosting Thanksgiving, but I just couldn’t resist! Then I thought, I’ll just stay local and get home early, but that didn’t work either… It all started out back at The Warwick Hotel for their very special Thanksgiving Eve buffet and Live Music. Their buffet was full of delicious smoked meats, sides, and desserts from Little Essie Mae’s Sweet Shoppe! When we arrived, we were able to catch the last set of Joseph playing acoustic. It’s been a while since I’ve seen him play. He was very entertaining and great music to sit back and listen to while I enjoyed the buffet. After his set things got a little crazier when the DMC Duo decided to bring a whole band for this special show. The DMC Band consisted of Marisa and Darrell plus Wade on drums and Kyle on bass. They truly stepped up the party by a few notches and had everyone dancing and singing along! The Warwick Hotel definitely knows how to throw a party! Make sure and check out The Warwick Hotel and DMC Duo’s ads in this issue and see what’s happening in December. Get out there and support some amazing music!! The night wasn’t over yet, the plan was to just stop in for one set with Calling Off Doug at Chick’s. We got there and started dancing along, and the we just had too much fun, we couldn’t pull ourselves away. Calling Off Doug hosted an amazing “Dance Off” with prizes so people could get their Christmas Shopping done early. It was a great idea and a huge motivator to get people up dancing! Calling Off Doug definitely plays your favorite party songs. Every time we tried to leave one of us would hear the next song, and say over and over again, “After this song..” before we knew it the show was over and everyone was going home. Calling Off Doug never disappoints, get out there and check them out for yourself! Their ad is also in this issue. Well, it was finally time to get home and get the turkey in the oven. I had to cook a 26lb turkey, so I’m glad I got it in the oven by 3am! Ugghh.. My body is getting too old for these shenanigans, but my mind still thinks I’m only 25! As you can see it was once again another amazing month of music. Make sure and flip through this issue and plan your night out on the town for New Year’s Eve!! There are plenty of options to fit all of your musical needs. Not to mention if you buy tickets in advance, you can usually save a couple of bucks, or make sure you secure your ticket before they are all sold out! Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Hershey concerts have already begun to release dates for 2020. Giant Center will host Post Malone on Feb 22. Hall & Oates with Squeeze on Feb 26. And Sir Elton John’s “Farewell Yellow Brick Road Tour” on April 20. Hersheypark Stadium will feature Ozzy Osbourne with Marilyn Manson on June 6. Green Day, Weezer and Fall Out Boy on Aug 16. And Journey with The Pretenders on Sept 11. Starcrawler, a young Los Angeles based band creating a lot of buzz made their way East playing very small venues, including Philadelphia’s Boot & Saddle. Singer, Arrow de Wilde, is known for her cathartic and often violent performances diving into the audience covered in blood, stealing phones and clothes from the audience. Starcrawler having been gaining recognition while touring with both Foo Fighters and The Distillers and hanging with the likes of Ozzy Osbourne and The Misfits. The band began in 2015 and have released two studio albums. Indie-rock identical twins, Tegan and Sara, brought their latest tour “Hey, I’m Just Like You” in support of their ninth album to 27 major cities. The Canadian music duo played an unplugged-type theme show, sharing intimate stories and playing music from their 24-year career. Poison lead singer, Bret Michaels, returned to Reading’s Reverb nightclub on Nov 2. The Mechanicsburg, PA native plays sporadic shows and calls his latest outing the “Unbroken World Tour.” The very first song, Michaels, blazed into Poison’s “Talk Dirty To Me” immediately followed by “Look What The Cat Dragged In.” A fun show including many Poison hit songs and also cover songs, “Rock and Roll All Night” and “Sweet Home Alabama.” I was fortunate to meet Bret on his tour bus after and share early PA Musician archives of his early bands Spectres and Paris, before starting Poison. A fairly new band hailing from Dublin, Ireland made their way to the shores of America on Nov 5 for their first U.S. show. Inhaler played an awesome show at Washington DC’s Rock N Roll Hotel as a support band for Blossoms, a group from Manchester, England. Inhaler is a four-piece band who met while in grade school and features singer Elijah Hewson, who is the son of U2 singer Bono. The entire group was great and the songs were extremely good, with a sound reminiscent of an 80s alternative band. It was actually quite mind blowing how similar Elijah looks and sounds like his father, an
absolute compliment to one of music’s greatest artists. Slayer brought their “Final World Tour” to Hershey’s Giant Center on Nov 6 with supporting acts; Primus, Ministry and Philp H. Anselmo & The Illegals. A great show overall with Anselmo playing music from his years with Pantera, the amazing industrial metal of Ministry, the funk metal of Primus and of course the legendary thrash metal of Slayer. It was beyond impressive to see how fast Slayer could still play after their career of 38 years. Slayer began the final tour on May 10, 2018 and played over 100 shows worldwide before concluding on November 30 at the Forum in Los Angeles. Lastly, I was privileged to have three great local bands play my home on Nov 9. The Super High-Tech Jet Fighters, Timmy’s Creep Show and Dinosorcerer, all played really great sets. An extreme thank-you to all three bands and especially Tommy Presite who went above and beyond: running sound, organizing band equipment and basically making the event happen. The Super High-Tech Jet Fighters recently released a new track, “All These Miles,” a single off their forthcoming EP. Check it out everywhere you can stream music. NATIONAL NEWS: Taylor Swift passed Michael Jackson’s record at the 2019 American Music Awards, taking home six honors including artist of the year and artist of the decade. The pop star, who already achieved 23 AMAs, surpassed the King of Pop’s 24 wins at the fan-voted show. She rambled onstage as she won the final award of the night, “This year has been a lot of good, a lot of really complicated, so behalf of my family and me, thank you so much for being there and caring,” said Swift, who now has 29 AMAs. Other big winners at the AMAs included Khalid and BTS — both continued on page 12....

Nostalgic performances included Green Day and Ozzy Osbourne, who performed with Post Malone and Travis Scott. The 2020 Grammys will hand out awards in its 84 categories live from the Staples Center in Los Angeles on January 26. Breakthrough singer-rapper, Lizzo, scored eight nominations, including bids for the top four awards, making her the show’s top-nominated act. Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X earned six nominations apiece. Eilish also scored nominations in the top four categories, making the 17-year-old the youngest artist in the history of the Grammys to achieve the feat. Arianna Grande scored five nominations, Taylor Swift earned three nominations and Beyoncé scored four. Overall, female acts out-performed their male counterparts in the top four categories: The Cranberries picked up a nomination for best rock album for their eighth and final album, “In the End,” which the surviving members of the Irish band created using unfinished vocals from singer Dolores O’Riordan, who died last year. Nearly six years ago Mötley Crüe signed a contract titled “Cessation of Touring agreement” as a centerpiece announcing
“The Final Tour” and to never perform again. Recently the band announced a reunion and says the deal is “off the table because a whole new generation of Crueheads are relentless and demanding.” The recent Netflix film “The Dirt” has brought the band back into the spotlight and they’ve decided to put the band back together. Mötley Crüe saw in the six months after the film’s release “a meteoric rise of almost 350% increase in streams of their music across all streaming platforms” while gaining new fans in the 18-44 demographic “now representing 64% of the band’s fanbase.” The stadium outing will also feature Def Leppard and Poison. Rumor is the tour will cost $3.5 million per show, the breakdown - Motley Crue ($2 million), Def Leppard ($1 million) and Poison ($250K). No dates yet scheduled. The Black Crowes’ Chris and Rich Robinson will mark the 30th anniversary of the band’s quintuple platinum debut album Shake Your Money Maker with a world tour that visits BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ on July 14 and KeyBank Pavilion in Pittsburgh on Aug 1. The last Black Crowes tour dates were in 2013, when the ever-volatile Robinson brothers vowed to never perform again. To be able to play music again together and celebrate the first record we made as kids, is a gift. To have these songs stand up after 30 years is something I could’ve never fathomed.” Rage Against The Machine, on hiatus since 2011’s “L.A. Rising” concert, is reuniting for a quick run of shows across the Southwest and culminating with two weekends at Coachella Music & Arts festival April 10 and 17 — coming full circle since headlining the first Coachella in 1999. The return of singer Zack de la Rocha, along with Tom Morello, Tim Commerford and Brad Wilk, was announced via Instagram on Nov 1. RATM will make appearances in El Paso, Texas March 26; Las Cruces, New Mexico March 28; and Phoenix, AZ March 30. It might be noted that those are all border cities and the band, known for its political activism has been long been supportive of immigrant rights and with a future presidential election the return of RATM may have a larger purpose. Journey and Pretenders will tour amphitheaters together this Summer for 60-dates beginning in May and finishing in September . The two 80’s legendary bands visit BB&T Pavilion in Camden, NJ on Aug 5 and Hersheypark Stadium on Sept 11. Last year, Journey’s co-headlining tour with Def Leppard ranked No. 12 on worldwide tours grossing $978 million. When the two bands played Hersheypark Stadium in 2018, they sold 26,753 tickets and grossed $1.89 million. Korn and Breaking Benjamin will bring their tour to arenas in 27 cities next year which launches Jan 23 at PPL Center in Allentown, PA. BONES UK will join the tour as special guest on all dates. Korn has been touring most of this year with Alice In Chains and sell an average 6,678 tickets per show. Multi-platinum selling Breaking Benjamin (from Wilkes-Barre) is releasing Aurora, a collection of reimagined songs from the band’s catalogue, January 24. Breaking Benjamin average 7,701 tickets sold per show. KISS is approaching the end of its long-tenured career and has unveiled a full leg of 44 North America dates, along with the drop-dead final stop of its touring run. Stops include PPL Center in Allentown on Feb 4, KeyBank Pavilion in Burgettstown, PA on Aug 28 and Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City on Aug 29. The final performance on the “End Of The Road” Tour will be at a currently unnamed venue in New York July 21, 2021. Another reunion reported was that of My Chemical Romance who announced a surprise Los Angeles show that sold out in minutes as well as some Australian dates. – Making a Difference Through Music
By: Rachel Rocks “Suicide Lake” was officially released in October 2019 on Spotify and iTunes by Anatomy of the Sacred. This song was written in dedication to those we have lost, and those that remain by Brenda Robinson and Shane Krout of Anatomy of the Sacred. Suicide is definitely not something to be taken lightly. Brenda and Shane know that suicide is unfortunately getting more prevalent in the world, and they felt it was time to break the silence and try to touch as many lives as possible and help prevent the horrible tragedy of suicide in our nation and around the world! Unfortunately, too many people have been directly or even indirectly affected by suicide and plenty of people will be able to relate to this amazing song, “Suicide Lake”. Brenda wrote the lyrics after doing hours of research, as part of her research she watched the recently released ‘13 Reasons Why’, ‘Sea of Trees’, and ‘The Shack’ just to name a few. She really wanted to write about suicide in a way that has never been written before. She wanted to make a song that made people stop and listen and think, and ultimately make better decisions. Shane actually saw a quote on Facebook that said “Suicide doesn’t take the pain away, it gives it to someone else…” – Unknown. That quote wound up being the backbone of the song, and then Brenda filled in all of the details. After the lyrics were written it was time to turn it over to Shane, he is the masterful arranger of all of their songs. Shane is a lifelong multi-instrumentalist which helps him as he puts music to the amazing lyrics that Brenda provides to him. The beginning of the song instantly sets the dramatic tone to “Suicide Lake”. You know immediately that it’s going to be powerful and meaningful just by the first few notes. As the song flows you feel it building as it goes through the line of, “The pain that you’re feeling, the rest that you’re seeking, the lie you’re believing, says you’re alone…” You really have to hear “Suicide Lake” for yourself to truly appreciate the magnitude that this song hits you with as it penetrates your soul. Anatomy of the Sacred’s Symphonic Metal is so unique, but yet exquisite, it truly is beautiful metal. The life of a song is very important, and the way that Brenda and Shane collaboratively write their songs is sometimes quite a lot of give and take, but ultimately, they truly understand each other, and it definitely shows in their writing. They want it to help people realize all of the reasons to keep on living. Every time I’ve listened to “Suicide Lake” I can feel the different perspectives that it is written in. It is meant to have meaning, and to get people to stop and think, and reach out to those around them. Ultimately, they want it to help people. If everyone starts helping each other how much better would our world be! RIDER’S ON THE STORM By Chris Rider
I’ve always said music is good for the soul, but lately I’ve found that to be even more true for myself. As I did some digging around on the interwebs, I found an article on cammomusic.org that actually validated this statement much more than my own anecdotal evidence could suggest. Did you know there is actually a real therapy program centered around music? I was unaware of this until now. I haven’t participated in the program (the one that I’m referring to here appears to be geared towards military veterans which I think is awesome), however I found the article interesting none-the-less. From the article: “Music therapy is an established health care intervention method that is recognized as a valuable treatment option by many, including the Department of Veterans Affairs, the Department of Defense, the Department of Health and Human Services, and the National Intrepid Center of Excellence. “ I guess finding this served as some sort of validation to me, I found it interesting and thought I’d share for those that may be interested as well. Now that I’ve shared that, on to the music! My month started out with my son hitting the River City Blues Club with me. The night started with an instrumental trio based out of Lancaster, “Electives”. Stew Bradley, Josh Cusatis, & Ian Schafer make up the band and had a great mix of rock, jazz and latin rock with maybe some surf rock tossed in for good measure. Parts of their show definitely reminded me of an instrumental Los Lobos sound. Following Electives came the Joe Olnick Band, a PA based instrumental quartet with a jam/ funk/rock sort of sound centered around Joe Olnick’s lead guitar work that would be hard to put in just one category. What I can
up was 2BB, a Towand based alternative/hard-rock/metal band consisting of Spencer Pusac on guitar and vocals, Callie Shumway on Keys and Vocals and Toby Quick on drums. 2BB has a powerful and driven sound to them that had the crowd moving. Check out their page to hear their upcoming release “CoHigh Class Nitty Gritty caine Zombie” to get an idea of how they sound. Headlining the evening was Hate Grenade on their “Initiate Killmode” tour of the East Coast. Hate Grenade consists of Jeff Glace on vocals, Chuck Lavera on guitar, Donny D on bass and Mike Powers on drums; they describe themselves as a Nu Metal/Rap Rock band. I’d say their description fits as there were moments that reminded me of Limp Bizkit, Deftones, and maybe some Faith No More. Most that know me know that rap just isn’t my thing...but this was just a powerful, well executed show that I truly enjoyed. These guys are well practiced and it shows in their music that was just there and together on every level. If you ever get a chance to see them, I’d definitely recommend it.

Electives definitively tell you is these guys just love what they’re doing, and love sharing their music with the crowd. My son and I had a great time hearing them and I look forward to hearing more from them in the future. The following night I headed down to HMAC for a night of hard rock and metal. If nothing else, I do like to change it up a bit LOL. The evening started off with High Class Nitty Gritty. You might recognize most of these guys, as they are also in Defiant with the addition of Jason Miller at drums. These guys had a great, high-energy set that included a song that I instantly fell in love with called “Thirsty”. They have a clip of it on their Facebook page, but I think I can say I never expected to hear metal merged with blues in any sort of fashion...nor that I would like it! Next up was Tubefreeks, a Maryland based hard rock band with an almost classic hard rock feel to it: heavy rifts, screaming guitar solos, angry drums and great vocals...everything a hard rock show needs. Paul Van Valkenburgh plays bass and rang out the lead vocals, Rob Portillo plays lead guitar and assists on vocals, and Chris Badolato was in the back smashing the drums. These guys came to play and it showed. Third band

My next venture out was down to XL Live for a night of jams. The evening started out with a personal favorite of mine, Yam Yam. These guys are a Harrisburg based jazz/funk/soul band that just has a sound to them that simply mesmerizes me. I’ve seen them a few times now, and I still find myself having to remember to take pictures while at their shows as I simply want to be there in the moment and just absorb their music on a cellular level...for me, it’s just that good. Consisting of Mike Dempsey on keys, Tom Fuller on guitar, Tyler Fuller on drums, Jason Mescia on saxophone, and Xander Moppin on bass; these guys play on a level that makes it no surprise that they have one hell of a following in this area and beyond. erful lyrics combined with a very polished big-band sound to a very enthusiastic crowd. The light show provided by XL Live for both bands was top notch as well I might add, making my job as a photographer much easier. To put it simply, these guys just had a sound that you’d have to hear (live, preferably) to believe. My final night out this month was up to Route 61 Roadhouse in Sunbury. Route 61 is a great place to see live music and lives up (in a good way) to their Roadhouse name. It’s a reasonably sized stage with good lighting & sound and lots of room for music lover and dancers alike. First up for the evening was LoBrau, a local trio with a psychedelic alt-rock sort of feel to them. Steve George on guitar/vocals, Wade Fausey on drums/ vocals and Hoy Riegel on bass/lead vocals have played in other projects together over the years and even bumped into each other occasionally in open jam sessions. In March 2019 they decided to get together and form LoBrau. They played a good variety of tunes including The Gorrilaz “Clint Eastwood, John Coltranes “Favorite Things” and Rolling Stones “Jumping Jack Flash”. Look for them in the future to be bringing out their mer-
sane and absolutely packed!); if this is a style that interests you, I’d highly recommend picking it up. You won’t be disappointed. Following Yam Yam was a band I’ve heard of, but not been exposed to until now: Big Something. Hailing from Burlington, NC, this 6 piece band played with a huge sound that was unique and powerful, mixing together rock, pop, funk, jazz and even some hip hop. Nick MacDaniels on vocals, Casey Cranford on sax & EWI (first I’ve seen it, sort of an electronic clarinet that sounded very cool!), Jesse Hensley on lead guitar, Ben Vinograd on drums, Doug Marshall on bass, Josh Kagel on keys and trumpet and Rehtt Huffman on keys (yes, I know that’s 7...but hey, that’s what they have listed on their site!); these guys combine to produce a sound that is almost indescribable. ch, recording an album, and playing more venues in the Central PA area. Next band up was Mercury Retrograde; a psychedelic Jam Funk band out of Philly consisting of “Lt.” Dan Snyder on guitar/computer, Sean O’Connel on keys, Adam Baker on bass, Cassy Yost on vocals, and sometimes Adam “Bosco” Wojcik on drums and/or Andreas Constantinou on drums. The word that kept coming to mind as I enjoyed their show was “groovy”. They list some of their influences as Papadosio, Dopapod, Jefferson Airplane, The Grateful Dead and Pink Floyd, just to name a few. You can hear all of these and more when you listen to them play. They have a very eclectic sound that, while original, will definitely bring to your mind the bands listed above. Final act of the night was Flux Capacitor; yet another band that I’ve been hearing about for a while but this was my first time out to see them. Currently touring much of the East Coast, based out of the Reading/Philadelphia area, this self-described psychedelic groove rock trio brings a “trippy mix of groove, rock, funk and progressive explosions to make your body move.” I can’t explain their show any better than they already have I suppose. Heavy on the synth sound with smooth guitar & bass; these guys brought a big sound to the stage especially considering they’re only 3 performers (although Cassy Yost from Mercury Retrograde also joined them for a few songs as well). Having played shows anywhere from small clubs/bars to festivals as big as Peachfest in 2018, these guys bring a great sound with them that had the crowd up & dancing the entire time. And that’s my month. I hope you found it at least somewhat interesting and informative. Enjoy the images from the shows of course. Get out to one (or more) of the many great music venues that we have in this area, support live music, and get yourself some therapy. Next month promises to be busy, what with the holidays and all...but I can assure you, this is a great time to see some awesome music and heal your soul...regardless of your preferred genre. All of these bands go on stage and play their hearts out each and every time; the least we can do is open our hearts to appreciate what they’re doing. If you see me out, stop me & say hi. We enter the holiday season and the homestretch toward the end of another year. Here’s hoping everybody takes the opportunity to enjoy family and friends, take stock in the season and its meaning, and resolve to help make the world a kinder, compassionate place in 2020. Here’s hoping all of our PA Musician readers enjoy a Merry Christmas, Happy New Year and safe, pleasant holiday season! For the ninth consecutive year, live music brought the Altoona area community together to raise money and awareness for the Healing Patch, a service that helps children and families who are dealing with the loss of loved ones. The 2019 edition of Patched Together: A Day of Music to Benefit the Healing Patch took place at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society. Eight bands and performers donated their talents between two stages this day, starting with Faded Flowers. The lineup of singer Michael Kensinger, guitarists Jarrett Bickel and Mike Wertz, bassist Hunter Karns and drummer Rob Bonsell focused on their melody-driven original rock songs, such as “Outta My Head,” “Truth Hurts,” “Rollin’ On,” “Back in Your Arms” and others, plus their strong rendition of The Darkness’ “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” Ed N’Born, the pairing of percussionist Ed Hofer and singer/guitarist Sean Osborn, continued with their acoustic set of original songs and covers; spanning numbers from the Black Keys, Foo Fighters, Dave Matthews Band, the Beatles, Eagles, Weezer and more. Making their return to Patched Together, Chris Vipond & the Stanley Street Band performed their brand of innovative funk-flavored groove rock. Namesake Chris on lead vocals and guitar, keyboardist Nathan Beatty, new guitarist Ben Eberhart, bassist Bill Smith and drummer Randy Servello reprised many of their original song favorites, including “Tupelo Tree,” “Pink Parking Ticket,” “Lonely Cells,” “Never Again,” “Armchair Preachers,” “Shine” and more. Also returning to this year’s Patched Together was my group, the Backyard Rockers.
It was great to be a part of this event once again, and singer/ guitarist Rich Dasch, guitarist/bassist/singer Mo Yon and yours truly on hand percussion, kazoo and backing vocals had fun performing acoustic sounds from Rod Stewart, Steve Earle, Elton John, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Traffic, Johnny Cash and more. Again providing one of the highlight performances of Patched Together was Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors, who brought dancers onto the floor with their rousing set. Jim on lead vocals and guitar, lead guitarist Kevin McDonald, guitarist, mandolin and harmonica player Dan Murphy, Kent Tonkin on bass, Bryan Fazio on congas and Joe Marini on drums did songs off their two CD’s including “We See Through It,” “We Have Arrived,” “You Are My Everything” and more, plus versions of The Record Company’s “Off the Ground,” the Kent-fronted take on Golden Earring’s “Radar Love,” Rusted Root’s “Send Me On My Way,” and the set-ending rendition of Sly & the Family Stone’s “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin).” Greg Burley then continued the music with his blend of acoustic classic rock favorites; applying his hardy voice to numbers from Elton John, Marshall Tucker Band, the Cars, Bob Seger, U2, Eagles, Better Than Ezra, Willie Nelson and more. Matt Otis & the Sound also fired up the dance floor with their set of thoughtful original rock. Matt on lead vocals and guitar, Kent Tonkin on bass, Alec Zander Redd on saxophone and Ron Brode on drums did many of Matt’s original songs, including “Make,” “Frozen Moments,” “Hope,” “The Most Important Thing” and others, plus offered their own fresh spins on numbers from Katrina & the Waves, the Monkees, Gotye, Buffalo Springfield and more. And Stephanie & the Wild Hearts closed out Patched Together in a country vein, performing their brand of rebel country. Singer and namesake Stephanie Onkst, Bob Onkst on guitar and vocals, new lead guitarist Wesley Neville, bassist Chad Morral and drummer Doug Fetter mixed up original songs and country favorites, performing tunes from Eric Church, Jason Aldean, Gretchen Wilson, Little Big Town, Dwight Yoakam and more. Patched Together again saw a large turnout, and successfully raised more funds and awareness for the Healing Patch. As Veterans Day took place last month, I took in two live music benefit events that helped out local veterans. Six bands donated their talents at The Arena in State College early last month
to help out the Veterans 22 Motorcycle Club, which helps area veterans dealing with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and other issues. I missed the opening set by the Donny Burns Duo, but arrived in time to see Speed Bump Willy. This group – singer Amy Weaver, guitarist Larry Tremaglio, bassist/singer Kimberly Tremaglio and drummer Bob Wahlers – devotes their talents solely toward charitable causes. Speed Bump Willy entertained the crowd with numbers from White Stripes, Johnny Cash, the Offspring, Cranberries, AC/DC, Green Day, Alanis Morisette and more. Up next was Wilted, whose sound blended elements of garage, indie and retro rock. Singer/guitarist Christian Douglas, guitarist Julian Saborio, bassist Dylan Forr and drummer Dom Sisto introduced several of their original numbers such as “The Dark” and “Dopamine,” and also broke out 1960s-era tunes from The Doors, The Stooges and more. Hawestone then took the music in a country direction with their mix of original songs and favorites. This group recently added a new member, singer and keyboard player Katie Becker, which enables them to perform a wider variety of songs. This night they did songs from Dustin Lynch, Luke Bryan, Luke Combs, Zac Brown Band and more. Taking the stage next was GoatSmoker, who generated heavier groove-driven metal music. Four members strong, GoatSmoker spotlighted original songs such as “Shogun,” “Honey Bucket,” the Black Sabbath-flavored “Red Tide Rising” and the Tool-like “Jerkoff”: and they also included a rendition of Primus’ “Mr. Know It All.” And Homegrown finished the benefit with their powerful set of classic rock, pop and blues numbers. As happened when I first saw them earlier this summer, Homegrown again impressed me with their enthusiasm and energy, especially singers Tabby Wilson and guitarist Billy Wilson. Both poured heart and soul into every song they did, including duet versions of Sam & Dave’s “Soul Man” and the Ike & Tina Turner take on “Proud Mary.” The rest of this group – guitarist Caleb Mitchell, keyboardist Rick Bailey, bassist Nathan “Tubz” Eisenhuth and drummer Ray “Bink” Eisenhuth – was tight and energetic as well, and Homegrown kept the crowd cheering from start to end. This benefit successfully raised more than $1,000 to help Veterans 22 MC continue to help area veterans in need. Guitars For Vets is a nationwide organization that collects continued on next page...

guitars, other instruments and accessories and provides them to veterans who are dealing with combat-related issues such as debilitating injuries, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) or other issues, so that the healing power of music (and playing and creating it) can help them cope. The Altoona chapter of Guitars For Vets presented a day-long event last month at Altoona’s Oak Spring Winery location to collect instrument donations and raise awareness of the organization and what it does. Live music was a part of the day. Performances from Rogan Allen and Chad Patterson kicked off the music. I arrived as Dave Howsare performed, blending classic rock, soul and other favorites. Some of his songs included John Mellencamp’s “Ain’t Even Done With the Night,” Marvin Gaye’s “What’s Going On,” The Who’s “Behind Blue Eyes,” and his closing Neil Young double-shot featuring an instrumental version of “Like A Hurricane” into “Cinnamon Girl.” Dave also did a Clarks number, breaking out “Someday Maybe,” as he related the story of how he listened to The Clarks’ music during down time while he was stationed in Qatar; he then jokingly said that The Clarks’ music now reminds him of the desert. Next was a group performance involving Guitars For Vets students and instructors. Instructor and event organizer Bill Ferrell was part of this group as they did a variety of numbers, spanning original songs plus vintage rock’n’roll and country songs from Dion, the Righteous Brothers, Elvis, Ricky Van Shelton, Buddy Holly, the Teddy Bears, Woody Guthrie and more. Led by Tim McMillen, The Free Wine Band then closed out the music with their mixture of acoustic rock, blues, country and folk sounds. Tim on lead vocals and guitar, Ken Werner on vocals, guitar and harmonica, and Steve Schilling on dobro performed numbers from John Prine, Neil Young, Rev. Gary Davis, Bob Dylan, Hank Williams, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and more. Tim and Ken shared singing duties, and all three musicians were solid on their instruments. The Guitars For Vets event was very successful, as a number of used guitars, amps and other items were donated (some from as far away as Dubois), and will help out veterans here in the local community. Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society hosted a Toys For Tots benefit event last month, with Kickin’ providing the music. Featuring singer and acoustic guitarist Sean
Osborn, lead guitarist Craig Albright, keyboardist Barry Yeager, sax player Ted Ellis, bassist Kevin Mitchell and drummer Bill Hocherl, Kickin’ stirred up the dance floor and generated good times with their mixture of classic rock and pop hits. This group has come together nicely since their debut this past summer, and sounded sharp on tunes from Billy Joel, Foo Fighters, Romantics, Bruce Springsteen, Jimmy Buffett, Rolling Stones, Badfinger, Dave Matthews, Bob Seger, Beatles, Queen, Ramones, Foreigner and more. Highlights for me included the array of keyboard effects Barry incorporated during Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust,” the crowd sing-along take on Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” renditions of Badfinger’s “No Matter What,” Foreigner’s “Urgent,” Hall & Oates’ “Maneater” and more. A good-sized crowd supported the benefit, and Kickin’ kept the dance floor filled and delivered the good time. Austin, Texas-based guitar slinger Eric Tessmer and his band lit up the People’s Natural Gas Park Oilhouse stage in Johnstown in late October. This was an excellent show, with local rockers Midnight Graffiti setting the table with an impressive set. Midnight Graffiti presented a two-singer tandem this night, with Natalie Kurchak and Terri O’Leary displaying and blending their stellar voices on a mix of rock, soul and pop favorites; flanked by the father-and-son tandem of John Kurchak on guitar and John II on bass, Bernie Kralik on guitar, and Jason Williams on drums. Both singers shined often – Natalie lit it up on Janis Joplin’s “Piece of My Heart” and the Jefferson Airplane double-shot of “White Rabbit” into “Somebody to Love,” Terri sounded great on Pat Benatar’s “Hit Me with Your Best Shot” and White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army,” and both captured the Heart harmonies on “Straight On” and “Even It Up.” Midnight Graffiti also heated up the crowd with numbers from the Pretenders, B.B. King, No Doubt, Blondie and more. The Eric Tessmer Band soon brought their blues-rocking firepower to the stage. Eric amazed the house with his guitar fireworks throughout the set, backed by bassist Jason Rathman and drummer Marc Redix. Eric displayed heated and soulful solos, intense Hendrix-like shredding, and even dazzled on the acoustic guitar for several songs during the middle of the set. Its Toll.” He also did “Ms. Fortune Teller,” new songs from his next EP, and a song from Freddie King. He paid homage to Jimi Hendrix with a fiery take on “Are You Experienced” and – for the encore – a roaring rendition of “Voodoo Chile.” And setting up for that encore, Eric “ripped the guts” out of his guitar on the last song of his primary set, which had much of the crowd delivering a standing ovation. Eric and his band left it all on the stage, guitar guts and all, and made everyone in the room glad they decided to attend and partake. As part of Halloween season, McGarvey’s hosted an interesting tribute show in late October, spotlighting music involving Glenn Danzig. The tribute unfolded in three sets and chapters. Maul – joined by Black Sun guitarist Jason Feathers – started out the night with a set that spotlighted Danzig’s years as frontman for the Misfits. With Todd McKeone and Nate Nagle sharing vocal duties, Maul did numerous Misfits classics from the Danzig era such as “Skulls,” “Astro-Zombies,” “Halloween,” “Devil’s Whorehouse,” “Where Eagles Dare,” “Die Die My Darling,” “Attitude,” “We Are 138,” “Last Caress” and more. Black Sun then anchored the next two sets, with the second set spotlighting Danzig’s work with Samhain. Todd, Jason, bassist Dave Mollica and drummer Nate Woods were joined by Lyndsay Reilly in her first singing role. The group performed Samhain numbers such as the group’s title song “Samhain,” “The Shift,” “The Howl,” “The Hungry End,” “I Am Misery,” “Mother of Mercy,” “To Walk the Night,” “November’s Fire” and more. Adam Feathers on guitar and Beth Helsel on bass joined in late during this set. Black Sun then finished the night with a set of music from Danzig’s self-named band, with Jake Hundt joining in on guitar. Opening with “Twist of Cain,” Black Sun proceeded with Danzig numbers such as “She Rides,” “Am I Demon,” “Possession,” “Long Way Back From Hell,” “Snakes of Christ,” “Devil’s Plaything,” the radio hit “Mother,” “How the Gods Kill” and more. The performances were strong throughout the show, and this presentation introduced the audience to a lot of music they may not have heard before, especially from Danzig’s Samhain years. I also caught the Halloween-themed double-bill of Faded Flowers and The M3dium at McGarvey’s in late October. The M3dium was in the midst of their opening set when I arrived. Comprised of singer/guitarist Scott Jurcik, lead guitarist Isaac Fischer, bassist and sax player Ryan McCracken and drummer Todd Schwatek, The M3dium did solid work on mostly 1990s numbers from Seven Mary Three, Alice In Chains, Tom Petty, Black Keys, Smashing Pumpkins, Jimmy Eat World and more. Faded Flowers then followed with two energized sets as they mixed original songs with covers. Singer Mike Kensinger took command of the audience from the get-go, and he and Faded Flowers kept the costumed crowd dancing and cheering with original songs like “Stay,” “Alive” and the reggae-toned “Holdin’ On,” as well as cover favorites from The Darkness, Cheap Trick, Tom Petty, Depeche Mode, Cars, Foo Fighters, Prince, Collective Soul, the “Time Warp” from Rocky Horror Picture Show and more. McGarvey’s also welcomed back VH-1 Classic “That Metal Show” host and comedian Don Jamieson, who emceed a night of hard-hitting music last month. I missed openers Darkness On The Radio, but heard impressive accounts of their set as they spotlighted tunes from their new “Snake Eyes” CD. I arrived in time to catch the last few tunes from Pittsburgh metal powerhouse Skell, including the title from their most recent CD, “Everything’s Fine,” plus the newer numbers “Make Some Noise” and “I Am the One.” Skell – singer Wally Wright, guitarist Mike Palone, bassist Mike Ekis and drummer Cameron Cruz Clark – sounded formidable as always, and I look forward to hearing what is next for Skell as they enter the studio in the New Year to record new music. Next was Railroad City Murder Machines, who rendered a powerful set of original tunes, many from their just-issued self-titled album. With singer/guitarist Tim Mort’s son Alex joining in on guitar for his birthday, Railroad City Murder Machines blended melody, crunch and velocity on numbers off the CD such as “Old Ghost,” “Ray Brower’s Body,” “These Streets” and “The Butcher” (with guest Troy providing the raps), “El Rey,” “Backsleeve” and more. Tim, Alex, singer/ guitarist Randy Williams, bassist Dan Mort and drummer Billy Mort provided full-frontal, high-velocity rock that fired up the crowd and kept everyone’s attention through the course of their set. Comedy then took the spotlight as local opener Jason Imler and Don Jamieson presented their respective stand-up routines. Jason touched on local themes during his routine, including a piece about what an Altoona subway system might sound like. continued on next page...

Don’s routine featured a lot of humor based around rock music, especially heavy metal, as he fired off jokes and stories about GWAR, Ozzy, Alice Cooper, Zakk Wylde, Maroon 5, Sebastian Bach, Kiss, Winger and more. He also referenced Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett (whose helmet-swinging assault against Steelers quarterback Mason Rudolph got him suspended for the rest of the season), Jeffrey Epstein, Larry King and others, bringing laughs throughout his set. Don then introduced Negan, who then closed out the night with their thunderous set of metal-powered originals and select covers. Singer Mike Davis, guitarists Bob Gray and Jeremy Ashurst, bassist Josh Yahner and drummer Damien Falatek did all four original songs off their “Burnt Pages” EP, new originals such as “Bridge of Death,” “I Am Negan” and “The Best of Us,” as well as renditions of Ghost’s “From the Pinnacle to the Pit” and “Square Hammer,” an Alice In Chains number and more. Negan again sounded strong; Mike’s voice was in good form, and the group instrumentally clicked on all cylinders. Hair Force One continued their never-ending “Decade of Decadence” concert tour last month with a show at Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge. The Dees was already filled up as I arrived late during the first set, with the group in the middle of a strong rendition of Tesla’s “Love Song.” Frontman Victor Synn’s voice was in great form on this number, setting the tone for what was one of the best Hair Force One shows I have witnessed! Tonight’s edition of the group – Victor, axe slingers Michael J. Cox and Milo Nuttz, Scött Allen on bass and Shawn Toppuver behind the drum kit – sounded great all night as they fired off favorites from the hair band ‘80s. Cinderella’s “Shake Me,” Poison’s “Talk Dirty to Me,” AC/DC’s “You Shook Me All Night Long” and Motley Crue’s “Same Ol’ Situation” finished out the set. The group launched their second set with Slaughter’s “Up All Night,” with Victor’s vocals again hitting the Mark Slaughter high notes with ease. The group proceeded through tunes from AC/DC, Kiss, Ratt, Guns N’Roses, Ozzy Osbourne, Twisted Sister and more, again filling the dance floor and keeping the crowd happy. Songs from Bon Jovi, Jackyl, Warrant, Ugly Kid
Joe, Def Leppard and Poison filled the third set, which culminated in Guns N’Roses’ “Paradise City.” Beckoned by the crowd for an encore, Hair Force One returned to the stage to slam the lid on the night with another Motley Crue favorite, “Dr. Feelgood.” Hair Force One sounded strong and jubilant, and their energy level rode at a constant high for the entire night. I also caught up with Cajun Norm & the Jam Session Band as they performed at the Windber Hotel in late October. “Cajun Norm” Chynoweth on vocals and keys, Gene Sweeney on vocals and guitar, Steve Spack on bass and Harold Knappenberger handling drum duties this night mixed up classic rock and blues favorites. They sounded strong on all of it; they blended Elmore James/Allman Brothers’ “One Way Out” into Johnny Otis’ “Willie and the Hand Jive” as I arrived. They proceeded with tunes from Steve Wonder, Jimi Hendrix, Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Allmans’ “Whipping Post” to finish the set. Norm and Gene split lead singing duties; Norm showed skills and style on the keys, and Gene made his guitar sing with tasteful and soulful solos. The group’s nightcap set opened with a bit of a surprise, as they broke out a version of Pink Floyd’s “Brain Damage/Eclipse” and followed with David Bowie’s “Changes.” They returned to the blues with Robert Cray’s “Smoking Gun,” and honored a request for Elton John’s “Your Song.” The group took it into country blues with “Tennessee Whiskey,” followed by tunes from Santana, Stray Cats, Buddy Guy’s “Feels Like Rain,” and the Doors’ double-shot of “Riders on the Storm” and “Roadhouse Blues” to end the night. I liked Cajun Norm & the Jam Session Band’s mix of flavors, and their instrumental skills and entertaining style in performing those flavors. “Songs About Life and Work” took the spotlight in late October at the Portage Station Museum in Portage, as local folk group Corn Silk shared folk songs and history. Featuring Annette Bernazzoli on vocals and guitar, Rich Bernazzoli on guitar and vocals, Terri Koenigsberg on banjo and vocals and Jen Sherbine on fiddle, Corn Silk entertained and educated with their song selection. Annette shared stories and information about the labor movement of the late 1800s and early 1900s, slavery, Americana and more. She and Corn Silk performed numbers
such as “Union Hall,” Si Kahn’s “Aragon Mill,” “Bread and Roses,” “Where Have All the Flowers Gone,” “Mary Don’t You Weep” and more. The group led the audience on sing-along renditions of “Michael Row the Boat Ashore” into “He’s Got the Whole World In His Hands,” and “This Little Light of Mine” to end the performance. The performance was dedicated in honor of co-founder and president of the Portage Historical Society, Barbara Yetzko, who passed away in September. When I learned that the ever-talented Mycenea Worley was performing near my neck of the woods last month, I did a onehour roadtrip to catch part of her performance at Seven Mountains Wine Cellars near Spring Mills. Armed with her 12-string acoustic guitar and a smile, Mycenea mixed some of her original songs with select covers. She opened her last set with Melissa Etheridge’s “Come to My Window,” before breaking out a Gin Blossoms number and Bob Dylan’s “Mississippi.” From her own catalog, she then did “100 Days” from her 2009 “Siren” EP, before breaking out another surprise, a version of Kenny Wayne Shepherd’s “Last Goodbye,” followed by Dolly Parton’s ever-popular “Jolene.” Next was her treatment of Mariah Carey’s chart-topper “We Belong Together,” before she ended the afternoon with one of her early original songs. It was all very enjoyable; Mycenea’s voice was in great form, and she kept the mood pleasant and conversational. Her distinctive style served as the connecting thread that wove her originals and covers together into a cohesive presentation. The audience enjoyed the performance and the venue’s pleasant atmosphere. Mycenea plans to return to the studio to record new music in 2020, and will be traveling to Iceland in April. I have written about Zac Grace numerous times, as he has provided the drumbeats for such area bands as Fayted, Shallow 9, Chris Woodward & Shindiggin’ and currently Railtowne. But for the past two years, Zac, has embarked on a solo career, writing and singing his own songs and working in and out of Nashville to record and get his music out there. vocals, Zac mixed a few of his original tunes with select country and rock covers. He performed the song he recorded and issued earlier this year, “This Is the Day,” his song about seizing the day and going for the gusto. He also did his songs “Worth the Wait,” “Give You My Best Shot,” his next single “Stay Here Stay Home,” “I Got You Covered” and more. The duo’s cover selection featured country favorites from Luke Bryan, Randy Houser, David Lee Murphy, Rhett Akins, Alan Jackson, John Michael Montgomery, Waylon Jennings and more; and they also did versions of Fuel’s “Shimmer,” Matchbox 20’s “3 AM,” Def Leppard’s “Two Steps Behind,” and I’m sure I detected Eric throwing a short tease of Yes’ “Mood for a Day” into the mix as well. And marking the sixth anniversary of his passing, Zac also paid homage to Altoona radio icon (and my former boss and mentor) Steve Kelsey, dedicating Luke Bryan’s “Drink a Beer” in his memory. Other performances I witnessed recently included New Jersey’s The Hudson Falcons at McGarvey’s, and weekly open mics and jam nights at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg on Tuesdays, the Unter Uns Musical and Entertainment Society on Wednesdays, and Altoona’s Greenbean Coffee House on Thursdays. The Altoona area music scene was stunned last month by the unexpected passing of Mike Bryant at age 42. Known by his nickname “Iceman,” Mike was a drummer, bassist and singer who had played in several Altoona area bands during the past two decades. He was probably best known as the vocalist for The Opposition, which resurfaced on area stages two years ago and was working up new song material. He also played drums in Dafunkt, and played bass in the group Tore Up. We at PA Musician express our heartfelt sympathies to Mike’s family, friends and the music community. News and notes…The Cre814 organization in Altoona, who has presented the annual late summer Cre814 Fest during the past two years, has announced their first annual Winter Carnival event. The Cre814 Winter Carnival 2020 will take place on Saturday, March 7 from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg. The all-ages event will feature local vendors, artists and live music, including eight bands that will perform throughout the day…Mysterytrain has announced their new
permanent bassist. Eric Milinchuk, who also plays guitar in the Skytop Band and The Perkolators, will take over four-string duties in the group… After a 10-year run on area stages, R2B2 will be going their separate ways at year’s end. The group has announced that their New Year’s Eve show at Altoona’s Newburg Fire Association Social Hall will be their swan song performance…Lenina Crowne has announced that they will be releasing their first full-length album. X-TERRA – THE SAVIOR IS BORN (no label) For more than three decades, Pittston-based rock band X-Terra has crafted and performed their distinctive brand of melody-based, Christian-themed hard rock. For their holiday season album, The Savior Is Born, the group – lead singer and lead guitarist Bill Hunt, bassist and backing singer Ann Kachline and drummer Bob Kachline – take their sound in an acoustic direction, mixing six original Christmas-themed compositions with three time-tested holiday favorites. X-Terra’s song selection leans more toward the Biblical meaning of the Christmas season, and often relates that meaning to the current world. One of the newer songs, “Imagine That,” juxtaposes the simplicity of Jesus’ birth in a stable against the backdrop of the modern-day world, and ponders how today’s opulent leaders measure up. Another newer song, “The Animals,” considers Jesus’ birth from the perspective of the animals present in the stable. And a third newer composition, “Wise Men Still Seek Him,” retells the story of the Three Wise Men, and how modern-day teachers and philosophers study and learn from that story. The group
also gives an acoustic update of their 2005 hard rock holiday epic “Is There Room in the Inn,” centered on Mary and Joseph’s plight leading up to Jesus’ birth. With its slight Beatles flavor, “My Christmas Wish” hopes that the meaning of the Christmas season is not lost among the commercialism and other hoopla associated with this time of year, while the upbeat “Sing for Joy” encourages happiness and celebration of the

X-Terra offers their interpretations of three Christmas season classics; opening the album with an uplifting folk-rock treatment of “Joy for the World,” giving a solemn rendition of “Oh Come Oh Come Emmanuel,” and finishing the disc with a rousing take on “Go Tell It on the Mountain,” anchored by Bob Kachline’s busy and playful drumbeats. X-Terra sounds comfortable in this acoustic setting; Bill Hunt’s soaring vocals are front and center, and the group’s instrumental arrangements are simple and to the point. Recorded at SI Studios in Old Forge, and co-produced by the group and engineer Tom Borthwick, the album sounds smooth, consistent and balanced, with all elements of X-Terra’s presentation coming through clearly. On The Savior Is Born, X-Terra offers a heartfelt and sincere celebration of the real meaning of the Christmas season, and provides a pleasant musical backdrop for taking stock and considering this time of year. DEFIANT – THE ANARCH-EP (no label) Based in Mechanicsburg, Defiant came together in early 2018, and has rapidly established themselves on central PA stages with their volatile brand of brute-force modern metal. Depicting a lit Molotov cocktail on the cover, their five-song debut EP, The Anarch-EP, showcases a charged, angry sound that lives up to the group’s name. Frontman and guitarist Albert Halterman, guitarist Joe Defiant, bassist Paul Barlowski and drummer Paul Cochran generate in-your-face assaults that rage against societal power-brokers and challenge authority. Defiant first drops a lit match into the gasoline with the forceful opener, “He’s Watching,” as Albert’s visceral vocals rail against Big Brother and authority figures that control and limit personal ambitions and dreams. The disc’s first single, “4 Years for Nothing,” angrily depicts the voice of veterans who put their lives on the line only to be ignored and neglected by the government they served. The frantic “Wendy” takes an anti-suicidal stance and challenges listeners to confront their life issues head-on. And revolution is in the air on the incendiary disc-closer “Dust the Democracy,” with Defiant’s call to rise up, resist and challenge the powers that be. Amid the agitation, Defiant does offer a milder interlude, pondering life’s fading moments on the darker-flavored “Feet First.” Defiant unleashes full fury throughout the disc’s heavier barrages, with tense guitar riffs and punishing rhythms establishing the terse sonic backdrops for Albert’s scathing howl, as he snarls out the songs’ angry themes with Phil Anselmo-like tenacity and authority. Recorded, mixed and mastered by Jason Shaffer for Full Tilt Productions, The Anarch-EP sounds appropriately caustic and fierce, allowing the sharp edges of Defiant’s attack to achieve total damage and effect. Defiant convincingly marks their turf on The Anarch-EP, crafting metal music that vigorously rages against the machine. gae, funk, punk, ska and rock flavors. Their first full-length CD, Better Late Than Ever, showcases this high-energy stew of sounds over a dozen tracks. Singer and guitarist Nicholas A. Hoffman, bassist Jim Berkin and drummer Scott Rosage churn out a turbulent mixture, chock full of infectious song hooks and spirited, inspired musicianship. No two songs are the same, and Private I mixes it up between hard-driving punkish assaults, acid-burn reggae and ska, softer-toned numbers and more. Their lyrical themes are often positive; with its funky and bouncy Red Hot Chili Peppers-like vibe, the disc-opener “Deedles” promotes love, unity, and taking stock in the simple pleasures life offers every day. The reggae-driven “Make It One” urges perseverance and triumphing over life’s stumbles, while the catchy ska-punk burner “MTJ” reminds listeners to step away from the grind and enjoy life. In an angrier vein, “Faith in Humanity” rants against corporate greed and lack of civility, and the punk-fueled “Dim Mass” tells listeners to wake up and get proactive with their lives. Private I offers milder moments as well, such as the romantic reggae of “Songs For You,” the coed vocal harmonies on “Only A Man” courtesy of guest singers Jill Rosage and Mynkara Ward, the stripped-down acoustic disc-closer “Pole Lights,” and the curious “If I Were A Duck” with its unusual blend of reggae with accordion accompaniment (by Jim Vizzini III) plus Polish lyrics. Private I’s presentation is strong; Nicholas displays a wide gamut of styles on the vocal end, from sassy rants to relaxed crooning, and the band fires their instruments on all cylinders to deliver passionate and bristling performances. Self-recorded and produced by the band, Better Late Than Ever sounds crisp and vigorous, full and balanced. Private I delivers a satisfying set on Better Late Than Ever, an energetic and enthusiastic album that displays strong songs and forward momentum. CONNER GILBERT – LIFE IN THE YEARS (no label) Ten years after the release of his first album, 2009’s The View From Within, Altoona area-based singer and songwriter Conner Gilbert has unveiled his follow-up album, Life in the Years. Conner has honed his songwriting skills during the past decade, resulting in ten strong and diverse melodies – blending rock, pop, alternative, folk and blues flavors – that stand strong individually but also blend into a cohesive whole. Singing and playing acoustic guitar, Conner utilized a number of guest musician contributors – some international – to flesh out his song creations; including multi-instrumentalist Drew Adams, who he co-produced the album with. The general theme of Life in the Years is life’s journey and lessons, and seizing the opportunities life has to offer. That theme is first established on the uplifting and ethereal opener “Bridges,” which builds into a broad, soaring chorus backed with mellotron-like keyboard flourishes. The blues-driven “Lost and Found” encourages inner strength in times of doubt and turmoil, while the uptempo rocker “Here’s to the Days” celebrates happy memories and moments. The soulful and thoughtful “Run Away” offers words of hope to listeners overwhelmed by life’s challenges, utilizing an irresistible chorus hook to send the message home. Conner and his hired guns throw a jazzy vibe into the hopeful “Hold On To That Truth,” punctuated with playful trumpet bursts by Chris Davis. “All Alone” and “Across the Wire” explore folk and folk-rock terrain, and the album ends on another uplifting note with the optimistic “Still Gonna Find Our Way.” This album sounds bright and colorful from start to end; the instrumental performances are solid and smooth, and Conner sings with confidence, heart and range. The disc sounds polished and balanced, and any of these songs would sound good on a radio. Life in the Years provides a pleasant, upbeat listen, and shows that Conner Gilbert has evolved into a skilled songsmith with a hopeful outlook.
