By Josh Noll Hello and welcome to our Millennium Music Conference Pre-game edition. This is the 24th year for MMC and we have been there for all of them. It’s hard to believe that John Harris and his amazing staff have kept this event going for so long. We all owe them a big thank you for all the hard work they put into it each year. The event brings in some great artist from all over the world, right into your backyard that you may otherwise never get a chance to see. Please be sure to check out the full event schedule in this issue so you can plan ahead and catch all the live action that MMC offers. The cover this month is a dedication to some the past performers so check it out closely to see who made the cut. Pics are by Rachel Rocks and Chris Rider Photography. I hope to see a lot of familiar faces along with a bunch of new ones this year at the event slated for February 27th thru the 29th. Be sure to stop by our booth and check out old issues, peruse sketches by our own Jim Price, drop a CD in the basket for a chance at some air time on the Homegrown Rocker show, grab a drink out of our cooler, or just shoot the shit and talk about life. We love meeting new people so please stop by and say Hi. January was a another month of great music starting out just over the hill from the PA Musician office at the Meiserville Inn. For those not familiar it has been around for years and years and is a staple in our area for great food and service. Now with new management in the last couple years they have been big supporters of local music and you can often find some great performers entertaining the crowd. On this weekend we got to enjoy the sounds of Mark Alexander with local drum legend John Erdley backing him up. Mark ,a former school teacher, has only been playing guitar for two years. It is no small feat that Mark has learned as many songs as he has in two short years and after he told me that, I really was impressed with his performance. To be able to sing and play guitar in front of a crowd that early on is pretty cool. He also plays to his audience and had us picking which songs we wanted to hear next. They both did a great job and supplied us with an entertaining night of music. He will be back over at the Meiserville Inn on February 7th so stop by and check him out. Next up was Big Bang! I was contacted by the Liverpool Legion and was asked how they could find some great bands to spice up Liverpool nightlife. I recommended they look through the pages of the PA Musician Magazine and give some bands a call. Wouldn’t you know it, the next couple weeks I saw Big Bang was heading my way. I have seen some of these guys in other bands but never as Big Bang. Let me just say it was awesome. It’s been awhile since I have seen a band at the Liverpool Legion with the last one being Big Daddy. Liverpool must like Big things because they showed up in force for this one, just like they did in the Big Daddy days. Big Bang knows its crowd and stuck to 80’s and 90’s “classic” rock the whole night. The crowd ate it up with the ladies and some gents out dancing the night away. I felt like it was the early 90’s all over again, and I was over in Newport hanging out at Zerbie’s Pool Hall. Everyone was singing along and having a great time with some of my favorites being covers of Four Non Blondes “what’s up” and The Cranberries “Zombie”. If you’re looking for a guilt free good time then, check out Big Bang at a venue near you. Also be sure to check Liverpool Legion’ Facebook for events. They have some more bands coming up in the future including Friend of Bob on Saturday February 8th. The good thing is you don’t have to be a member to see the band and the drinks are super cheap!
The last night of music I caught this month was down at The Harrisburg Midtown Arts Center aka HMAC for the Sounds of the Underground Metal Festival and also Moon Hooch. The fact the HMAC can have two entirely different shows under the same roof and make everyone feel like one big happy family is no easy feat. Nick Meyers, of 717 Entertainment, and Chris Werner of HMAC have really been stepping up the game with the rebirth of the HMAC. They have been having some stellar shows in the past couple months and this weekend was a non stop action fest with From Ashes to New with Defiant the night before and Turkuaz with Neal Francis the night after. OK, so Moon Hooch, while not my regular cup of tea, was very entertaining and had the place packed with the crowd hopping away. Think jam band with horns instead of guitars, and this is Moon Hooch. I watched a couple songs but jam bands are just really not my thing. Which was OK, because downstairs was all the metal you could handle. One bad ass band after another. Nick knows how to pick them and although I wasn’t there for the whole event all the bands I caught were destroying HMAC. Offensive was killer with heavy riffs and non stop action with lots of head banging. Lasciate, a band I have been hearing a lot about, were very high energy with some Misfits thrown in to let everyone know what they were all about. The last band of the night was the mighty Suicide Puppets. Yes we all know I’m a fan and so was the mostly metal infused audience that was there to witness the mayhem. The guys really put on a show leaving the crowd wanting more. With cheers of, one more song, at the end of the set forcing the Puppets back on stage. Like being controlled by the strings of the puppet master, they took to the stage and played a new song that the guys have never even played as a band before. To hear it out front you would have thought they had practiced this song many times but at the end of the song the expressions on the guys faces told a different story. It was like “did we just do that?” Yes, yes you did, and the crowd ate it up. One of the best things about this night was the cross of music genres and seeing Moon Hooch fans faces as they experienced the Suicide Puppets for the first time. Be sure to check out what the HMAC has to offer and please support them as they revamp the place. This month we have some amazing events coming to our area.
Suicide Puppets at HMAC
Not only is February Millennium Music Conference month but also Gettysburg Rocks. Which takes over the Gettysburg and York area with two nights of music on Feb 7th and 8th. Gettysburg Rocks is a Bi-annual music festival taking place in February and August to benefit the Four Diamonds in supporting children battling pediatric cancer. It is held across multiple venues throughout the area so please go check them out and make plans to attend a show. One of the big ones being at Racehorse Tavern on both nights. Next we have the Fill The Void Music Festival on Feb. 15th. This is meant to fill the void left by the Lancaster Roots and Blues Festival not happening this year due to Rich Ruoff’s wife Claudia battling Glioblastoma, a horrible form of brain cancer. continued on page 23...

Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Hershey continues to add more artists for their Summer 2020 season. James Taylor and Jackson Browne (Giant Center) June 18th. Zac Brown (Hersheypark Stadium) June 20th. Nickelback (Hersheypark Stadium) July 11th. Rod Stewart and Cheap Trick (Hersheypark Stadium) July 31st. Phish (Giant Center) August 11th & 12th. Maroon 5 and Meghan Trainor (Hersheypark Stadium) September 5th. These shows add to the big list of upcoming events including Post Malone, Hall and Oates, Elton John, Volbeat, Ozzy Osbourne, Marilyn Manson, Motley Crue, Def Leppard, Poison, Green Day, Fall Out Boy, Weezer, Journey and Pretenders. The past month included the annual Drugcember event, in which Philadelphia-based band, The War On Drugs plays intimate shows to benefit Philadelphia schools. The War On Drugs sold-out both their shows at Union Transfer and The Fillmore. The group put on a great show for a great cause. The War On Drugs won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album in 2017 for their fourth album, A Deeper Understanding. Last month also brought the return of Harrisburg local band, The Give Take, at River City Blues Club on January 4th. The band hadn’t played in months due to their members busy schedules. Singer, Paul Sorrels, pulls double-duty as frontman for eternal punk band The Virus. The Give Take put on a great show full of emotion, they have very strong songs and could be considered the best band in Central PA. January also involved traveling to Los Angeles for a week of music related events. The highlight was the reunion of LA band, The Binges, on January 18th at Echoplex. The amazing group had split in 2011 but are together again spreading their raw, energetic and honest rock n roll. It was great to visit historic music venues including The Viper Room, Whisky A GoGo and Rainbow Room. I also visited early homes where Joan Jett, Motley Crue and Jane’s Addiction all began their careers. A few artists that I met on the streets included Duff McKagen (Guns N Roses), Steve Jones (Sex Pistols) and Luke Spiller (The Struts). Lastly, I made a visit to Duane Peters’ (US Bombs) store in Oceanside where he sells his artwork, music and skateboard related items. It was a real treat to spend some time talking with the ‘Master of Disaster’. NATIONAL NEWS: Aerosmith’s drummer, Joey Kramer, tried suing his bandmates because they wouldn’t let him play with the band at the Grammys. However, a judge rejected Kramer’s legal attempt to rejoin the act. Kramer, said in a lawsuit filed that he has been kept out of the band after he hurt his ankle last year and missed shows, including part of the band’s lucrative residency at a Las Vegas casino. The 69-year-old says his bandmates required him to re-audition to earn his job back by performing a series of solo rehearsals to prove he could play “at an appropriate level,” according to his lawsuit. Aerosmith replied, “Joey Kramer is our brother; his well-being is of paramount importance to us. However he has not been emotionally and physically able to perform with the band, by his own admission, for the last 6 months.” Kramer was physically barred by security guards from entering the band’s Grammy rehearsal in Los Angeles. Kramer, has been replaced with his own drum tech, John Douglas, who he pays a rate of $20,000 per week for performances and $10,000 per week for rehearsals. Rocker Ozzy Osbourne says that he’s been diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease, a nervous system disorder that affects
movement. The 71-year-old former vocalist for the metal band Black Sabbath said that the diagnosis came after a fall last year. Osbourne had to cancel tour dates last year due to health troubles. Osbourne said he really wants to get well and get back to performing because he misses his fans. His wife, Sharon Osbourne, claimed the diagnosis “was not a death sentence by any stretch of the imagination,” but that Ozzy has good days and bad days. Posthumous inductees Whitney Houston and The Notorious B.I.G. will lead a new class into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, joined by Depeche Mode, the Doobie Brothers, Nine Inch Nails and T-Rex. Two non-performing inductees include: music manager Irving Azoff, best-known as the manager of the Eagles since 1974 and Jon Landau, a former music journalist, who currently manages Bruce Springsteen. The annual induction ceremony will take place May 2nd at the Public Auditorium in Cleveland, the city where the rock museum is located. The Saturday night show will be on HBO, televised live for the first time. Pearl Jam announced its first studio album since 2013 and an extensive tour to go with it. The band’s 11th studio album, Gigaton, drops March 27th and Pearl Jam hits the road in support, visiting Baltimore’s Royal Farms Arena on March 28th. Aside from a few stadium shows and festival appearances, the tour marks Pearl Jam’s first full North American arena tour since 2015-16. Over the last three years the band has averaged 52,075 tickets sold per show for a gross of $4,666,506.

ered flamboyant but precise, with prominent tom fills riddled throughout the band’s many epic tracks. Rush’s final tour in 2015, grossed $37.8 million on 35 shows. The Stadium Tour featuring Def Leppard and Motley Crue with Poison Steve Jones and Joan Jett & The Blackof Sex Pistols hearts has already sold more than 700,000 tickets and grossed over $90 million at the box office in its first weekend of sales. Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott stated, “Well the tour is out there now and it keeps getting bigger and bigger. This is going to be a monster of a tour!” Added Mötley Crüe bassist Nikki Sixx, “Little did we know that making The Dirt movie would lead us to this exciting new place touring stadiums.” Poison’s Bret Michaels commented: “There are not enough words to thank the three generations of fans for making this such an exciting, record breaking, historical tour with the fastest sell outs in history at these stadiums.” The Stadium Tour visits Hersheypark Stadium on August 11th. UPCOMING CONCERTS: The Used - Baltimore Soundstage Feb 7. The Huntingtons / The Super High Tech Jet Fighters - Lancaster Lizard Lounge Feb 8. No-Heads - York Skid Row Feb 8. Cheap Trick - Bethlehem Wind Creek Casino Feb 12. Jesse Malin - Lancaster Tellus 360 - Feb 21. Hall & Oates - Hershey Giant Center Feb 26. The Twindows - York Fat Daddys Feb 28.

Neil Peart, 67, the technically masterful drummer for classic rock power trio Rush, died on January 7th. Peart joined guitarist Alex Lifeson and bassist/singer Geddy Lee in 1974 as drummer and primary lyricist of Rush. The highly influential percussionist was known on stage for using an elaborate 360-degree drum kit and extended solos in concert. His drumming style was consid-

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
I can’t believe it is already February, and time for the Millennium Music Conference! This month will definitely be filled with music!! Even though for me it seems like every month is filled with music. I was excited to see so many packed shows this month! Lots of people out supporting live music which is awesome!! This Thursday I’ll be attending the Central PA Music Awards at the Whitaker Center. It is so amazing that the Whitaker is sold out for this event! It’s awesome to see so many people
supporting the music scene, and it will be even more awesome seeing bands and people in the music community getting the recognition they deserve. Read all about the show next month, but for now, let’s get on to the music I did see. This month started out at Chick’s in Hummelstown for Calling Off Doug. I’ve seen these guys and gal quite a few times now, and every time they put on one heck of a show. They are definitely a crowd favorite at Chick’s packing the room and the dance floor with fans having a great time. I always know there are people willing to dance with me at a Calling Off Doug show. It’s always a plus when everyone in the band can sing and mix things up throughout the night, plus it helps add to the variety of the music they can cover. Check out Calling Off Doug’s ad in this issue and see where they will be partying the night away next. I was able to sneak out early on a Saturday so I headed out to the Eagle Hotel in Fredericksburg to see and hear Nate and Pete playing acoustic, also to get some amazing food! I had high hopes of enjoying their famous Steak Dinner Special, but when I arrived I was more in the mood for some Fried Pickle Chips, and a burger. No matter what food you get at “The Hoootel”, it is always amazing. Nate and Pete are also always a pleasure to listen to. Nate and Pete have so many great originals to play. It’s always fun watching them on stage and hearing their stories! They have a relationship unlike any other, that’s for sure! You can check out their full schedule on their website, www.natemyers.com. You can also check out the Eagle Hotel’s ad in this issue and check out their full schedule of entertainment.

To end this night, I took one more long zoom over to Johnny Joe’s in Mechanicsburg to see Stricken, the new Disturbed tribute band. Stricken only emerged a few short months ago, but already have over 3,000 likes on Facebook. They are quickly growing in popu-

larity throughout the midstate and beyond. When I got to Johnny Joe’s it was packed and it was Stricken’s first show. They were definitely “Disturbed” in more ways than one. When Dave sang “Sound of Silence” he had the room completely captivated. If you want to check out what everyone else is talking about, check out their ad in this issue and get out there and get “Disturbed” like the rest of us. On Thursday nights I had the opportunity to go to Boneshire Brew Works to hear their acoustic music. The first night I saw Sweet Corn and Peanut. This husband and wife combo make one heck of a sound together, unlike anything else in the area. On another night I heard Peter Stone. He’s a solo act, but easily kept our attention, and kept the patrons entertained. Boneshire has acoustic music every Thursday night from 7-9, plus they have great beer too! My next night out I went to XL Live for Observe the 93rd’s Night of Chaos. I unfortunately missed the first two bands: Big Boy Brass and Big Fat Meanies, but I heard they were both amazing. I’ll definitely have to keep them on my radar. I did get there in time for Gas Station Disco. It was my first time seeing them with a female lead singer. I have no idea how long she’s been their lead singer, but

man, she could sing. Gas Station Disco definitely helped keep the party hopping. The last band of the night was Observe the 93rd. It was awesome to see they brought a new guitar player, Brett Scheib, so Derek come out without a guitar. It was nice because it allowed him to really focus on singing and entertaining the crowd. It’s awesome to see how the guys have really built up their fan base, and their fans definitely helped add to the chaos part of the night. The energy pouring from the crowd just helps fuel the energy of the guys on stage, and makes it one heck of a show! You can check out their ad in this issue to get them booked at your venue or private party. Saturday night started out a little calmer at Bald Hills Distillery for DMC Duo. Darrell and Marisa don’t mess around, they travel all over the state playing their music wherever they can go! Bald Hills Distillery is in Dover, PA. It’s a very neat Distillery with delicious drinks, my favorite was of course the Root Beer Float! Mmmm!! I’ve seen DMC Duo play a few times now, they are constantly adding to their set list and developing their show. There were plenty of people dancing and singing along and having a good time. After their show, we headed about 15 minutes down the road to Racehorse Tavern for Maiden America and the Racehorse’s 20th Anniversary Y2K New Year’s Eve Party. I’m so glad I finally made it to a Y2K Party, it is such an awesome idea to celebrate New Year’s a couple weeks later so they don’t have a bunch of other parties to compete with. I loved how everyone got their party hats on and actually had a countdown to midnight, when they dropped a (stuffed) horse from the ceiling and everyone did a champagne toast. The Racehorse Tavern definitely knows how to party. Stricken opened up this wild party and I heard they put on an even longer show at Racehorse. They are already adding to their set list and covering even more Disturbed songs. Maiden America had the dance floor packed all night long with people headbanging and singing along. Gordon always has super intense energy that always has him flying off the stage and working his way throughout the room. Congrats to Missy Jo from
Mad Hatter Entertainment for organizing yet another amazing night of music! Make sure and check out Racehorse Tavern and Maiden America’s schedules in this issue to see where and when all of the parties are happening next month! Next up was a special Thursday night show to see the Glorious Sons. I’m always amazed by big week night shows that are packed. The Glorious Sons have quite a few songs getting air time on the radio, one of those more popular songs is “Sawed Off Shotgun”. XL Live, Reverb, HMAC, The Chameleon, and Harrisburg University are constantly bringing phenomenal entertainment to our area. You really have to keep your ears out to hear what’s coming to the area. Reverb still has an ad you can easily check out in the magazine, unfortunately the other venues do not, which makes it even trickier to figure out who is playing where. At only $130 for a ¼ page or $198 for a ½ page, or even $375 for a full page, it is crazy not to advertise in one central location so everyone could look in one spot and check out everything happening. After all we are “THE” magazine for not only the people who MAKE music, but also for the people who LOVE music. People like to flip through our pages and see what is happening where, so they can plan their next night out on the town. You can advertise by giving Josh a call at 717-636-4203.
I was horribly sick with the flu for a week, but I finally crawled off the couch because I couldn’t resist the rockin’ good show at HMAC with From Ashes to New headlining. I have been told all about From Ashes to New for years, so when they were playing so close I couldn’t miss their show. The bonus was that Defiant was opening for them, so I made it out in time for their set. It was awesome seeing Defiant on a big stage again. They definitely had the Defiant fans out there supporting the show, there were Defiant shirts and merch everywhere! Defiant is getting amazing opportunities to open for a lot of big bands at all of the local venues. They definitely know how to get the party started, and it doesn’t hurt that their “Defiant Army” will follow them anywhere! Check out Defiant’s ad in this issue to see where they will playing and get out their and join their army! Defiant will be playing at HMAC’s Capitol Room as part of the MMC on Saturday, Feb. 29th. Eva Under Fire played next. I’m not sure where they are from, but they were traveling with From Ashes to New and they definitely rocked! Their lead signer had an amazing voice and all of the guys in the band had a fantastic stage presence. I personally liked the lead guitar player’s Eva Under Fire onesie. OUT & ABOUT continued... nitely knew how to represent his band on stage. When you are a band traveling through an area, like so many of the MMC bands that will be here soon, there is nothing wrong with wearing your own merch, especially at shows where you don’t even have time to hang your banner. Let people know who you are without a doubt when you are on the stage, and even more importantly walking around the venue. Finally ,it was time for Lancaster’s own, From Ashes to New. These guys don’t play in our area very often because they are too busy touring, but I’ve glanced at these guys on YouTube and checked out songs that have been sent to me, but I definitely wasn’t prepared for their live show. With them only being a 4 piece and the only instruments on stage are a guitar, drums, and two crazy amazing voices, they really put out one heck of a sound. The lyrics to every song are so powerful. We all know we all have our daily struggles, life hurdles, or whatever you want to call them, but From Ashes to New’s lyrics are exactly what their band name suggests. Even when you are completely down into ashes, if you keep trying and keep fighting, you can and you will be new again. It was a great show and I will definitely pay more attention to these guys! So glad I finally caught a show. After their show I headed over to XL Live for the last set of The Amish Outlaws. These guys are another band I’ve heard so much about, but never got a chance to see them before. Again, they were nothing like I expected, but they were fantastic and hilarious. They play all of everyone’s favorite party/dance music, but they are dressed like a bunch of Amish guys. I’m told some of them are legitimately Amish, but hey whatever, they are still very entertaining. When you see a show like this so packed it makes you realize how desperate our area is for the dance party cover bands. There really aren’t that many left, but the ones that are, always have a great following, and these guys had XL Live packed! My final night of the month started out early with a trip to Mellow Mink Brewing to hear Derek Henry playing acoustic. His confidence on stage continues to grow, and it’s awesome just sitting back and hearing him perform. Derek will be playing with his band Observe the 93rd as part of the CPMA’s. They are also nominated for Best Rock Band, I can’t wait to see who wins! Check out Derek’s ad in this issue with booking info for both his Acoustic Project and his Full Band Observe the 93rd. After hanging out with Derek for a bit I headed to The Wharf for The Famous’s Special Acoustic Show and more importantly Amy’s birthday extravaganza! I couldn’t believe how packed it was in The Wharf. Not to mention the parking lot was so full we had to park on the side streets. It was pretty much just like a rockin’ Famous show, except they were sitting down. The full band was still there covering their music on a slightly calmer scale, it was slightly weird tho because the fans were sitting down too, except it was standing room only, so for those of us without a seat we were crammed in the back being shuffled back and forth by the poor waitresses trying to work their way through the madness. People get upset when they don’t have a lot of people at their shows, but I really don’t do well with crowds, I started to feel claustrophobic and had to leave before the 1st set was even over. From the pictures I saw it looked like it was packed, crazy, and super fun night, all night long! The MMC is pushed back another weekend, so this year it is February 27-29th, because it is so late in the month, unfortunately my MMC coverage won’t be in until our April Issue. Please check out the full schedule of the showcase performances in this issue and get out there and support local music. People travel from all over the world for the MMC. We are truly blessed to have this conference right here in our own backyard! This year the trade show and conference with panels, etc.. will be at the Hilton in Downtown Harrisburg. Rock Mill Industries will once again be hosting the Open Mic Stage at the MMC, so make sure and bring your guitar and play us a song or two! I can’t wait for the MMC! It’s one of the craziest/best times of the year! Well that’s all for this month. The CPMA’s are THIS Thursday, I will be writing all about that for our next issue. I can’t wait to see who wins, and I also can’t wait to see all of the amazing things that will be done to help support music education with the funds raised at this event! If you see me Out and About, please say Hi! Please also check out our website, www.pamusician.net, and of course SUPPORT LOCAL MUSIC!!!

RIDER’S ON THE STORM By Chris Rider
2020...a new year, new beginnings, all that humdrum and stuff. But this month does bring something new to Central PA’s music scene: the first annual Central PA Music Awards, hosted by the Central PA Music Hall of Fame at the Whitaker Center on January 30th. By the time you read this, the ceremony will be over and the winners known, but I’ll give my take on it ahead of the ceremony. I’ve been nominated along with 4 other fantastic photographers for the Best Photography Award. As a relative newcomer to the scene, I’m extremely humbled and excited by this nomination. Win or lose, I consider simply being nominated a huge compliment to what I have worked so hard on and I’m sure the other nominees feel the same way. I won’t lie, I’ve never been a big fan of the big award ceremonies like the Grammy’s and such...but maybe that’s just because I didn’t feel a personal tie to them. Sure...I knew a lot of the music and was familiar with the work of the artists being celebrated, but I didn’t have a personal tie with them other than hearing them on the radio. Even if I wasn’t nominated for an award, I’d still have a very personal tie to this ceremony as many of the bands, venues etc. that have been nominated are ones that I’m familiar with, have covered, and a lot of whom I even consider my personal friends. I’m so proud of each and every one of them that have been nominated, and I can’t wait to see how this ceremony continues to grow over the coming years. If you haven’t already, please reach out to all the nominees and congratulate them on their accomplishment! My month has been an odd one to say the least, but I managed to see some great shows. You’ll notice that I spent quite a bit of time at HMAC this month...this was just an odd happenstance as I do try to spread the love among the venues around the area, but this month I had a few can’t-miss gigs at HMAC and it all seemed to blur together. I guess it goes that way sometimes, I can assure you next month will be much more spread out! I started off at HMAC a few weeks ago to see TWEED, an electronic rock band that had some heavy Jam-Band influences and lists their current location as “Deladelphia”. I couldn’t find it on the map, but I’m putting them in the South East corner of PA LOL. These guys had a very psychedelic flow to them that kept the folks in the crowd moving. I had a blast hearing these guys and can recommend them to anyone interested in that scene. My next trip out was up to Isle of Que Brewing in Selinsgrove to see Ricky and Harv, a local duo playing hits from the 60’s on up including some Beatles, Tom Petty, and even “I think we’re alone now” by Tiffany. They were a pretty entertaining pair that kept the crowd involved during their entire two hour show. That weekend was back down to HMAC for the Jake Joyce Band, followed by Vintage Pistol. I’ve seen Jake perform a few times before with Rascal Revival, and Jake invited me down to catch his other project. His band is an “Americana infused Rock & Roll” band, with various classic rock, blue & country influences. They released their debut EP in 2018 and it’s available on all streaming services. Vintage Pistol came out next onto the Herr St Stage. Based out of Fayetteville, AR; these guys brought a Rock sound with a lot of jam roots. They claim influences of the Allman Brothers, Steely Dan, Marcus King Band and many others. I can tell you they have a very wide style, and a solid & polished sound to them with a great mix of originals and covers including “Shakedown Street” and “Without Love”. I’ve added them to my Spotify list and can assure
Eva Under Fire you that they’re at least worth checking out! Next trip down to HMAC for a night of 5 metal and rock acts including a personal favorite of mine, Defiant. First up for the night was Violet Nine, an Allentown based rock band with a lot of energy. They did an awesome job warming the crowd up. Next up was Lancaster based Dawns Divide. They call themselves a “Stoner Rock” band...I think that’s the first I’ve heard that. These guys formed in 2018 and play all original music with a pretty wide range of style & influences. It’s easy to see, and feel, that their music pours straight from their hearts as a result of life experiences. I truly enjoyed their set. Next up was Defiant, a band that’s no stranger to our pages here or to stages across the area. The guys brought their hard charging metal act to the main stage at HMAC, and they killed it. I might add, this is the first time I’ve had a band invite me up on stage to get pics of them and the crowd that was clearly enjoying the show. I had a blast, but man does it get warm up there! LOL. Thanks again guys for the invite, that was an awesome experience for me and I truly appreciate it! Eva Under Fire followed the guys from Defiant on stage. Have I mentioned that I’m a
Los Elk sucker for a female-led rock band? Especially when she’s got a powerful voice? Well, I am...and Eva Under Fire fits this category very well. Coming out of Detroit with their alternative rock sound, Eva Under Fire almost literally lit that stage on fire. They claim a wide variety of influences from The Cure to Nirvana, and their music shows it. From beginning to end, they brought their very powerful sound to Harrisburg and the crowd just ate it up. You can check the folks out on Itunes, Spotify, and many other digital services. Headlining the evening was a band I’ve heard of, and maybe even heard a song or two from, but never really took the time to listen to: From Ashes To New. Coming out of
and have (once again) added them to my Spotify list. From the sound, to the lighting, to their performance on stage...this was a high quality show. Final trip to HMAC was one of personal preference for me. Turkuaz was coming to town and I finally had a chance to see them. The night started off with the pre-party show down on the Herr St Stage with Los Elk, a groovy indie-rock band out of Boston. You can find them on Spotify, Itunes, Soundcloud and Bandcamp, and I’d highly recommend it. These guys brought a very unique mix of funk, rock, pop, maybe a little hippie-jam to the stage. Upstairs on the main stage, Neal Francis brought a 70’s styled blues/funk/rock/soul show that was unlike any I’ve ever seen before. I felt like I was transported back to the 70’s, from the styling of their outfits, to the style of their play, Neal and his bandmates certainly brought the 70’s to life on stage. Headlining the evening, as mentioned, was Turkuaz: a nine piece PowerFunk band from Brooklyn. I’d heard bits and pieces from them over the years and I think, sometimes I
Vintage Pistol heard songs from them that I perhaps even attributed to other bands. It’s hard for me to put them in a category, or even a few categories. “PowerFunk” even seems incomplete. They’ve got a very complex sound to them, from the 3 piece horn section to the downright funky guitars, the powerful percussion, and mesmerizing vocals...it was truly an experience to hear and see them live. They have a very “big band” sound, but still somehow manage to maintain their individual sounds as well. I’m not sure where all you can find their music, but I’ve found them on my Pandora and Spotify playlists so far, I imagine they’re not too hard to find on most any of the digital streaming platforms. Check them out...maybe they’ll be your flavor, maybe not...maybe they’ll just be nice to toss in the mix of all the other music you may listen to. They’re worth trying out though for sure. So, there you have it, another month of music from my point of view. Just a reminder: if you’ve got a show coming up that I should see, make sure to send me an invite, shoot me an email or a message, let me know about it. The majority of
Violent Nine the shows that I go and shoot I find out about through invites from all of you or your friends. Hit me up on facebook: @chrisriderphotography or email: chrisriderphotography@gmail.com, stop me if you see me out and say hi. Until next month...go find some live music and give it some support!

Jake Joyce Band February 2020
Lancaster, this Alternative/Rock/Rap group has music available through Better Noise Records on Spotify & Itunes. Their songs are, maybe surprisingly, very positive, passionate, and powerful. They speak of hope and inspiration, not only for themselves but for all of us. While their music isn’t a style that most would attribute to me, I found myself really enjoying their show a lot

THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price
Another February, and another Millennium Music Conference…Breaking up the gray and relative monotony of this winter season will be the 24th annual Millennium Music Conference (MMC), which takes place February 27-29 at the Hilton Harrisburg Hotel & Conference Center in downtown Harrisburg. This year’s conference will again feature music business panels, clinics, workshops, keynotes, mentoring sessions and the trade show, as well as lots of networking opportunities, and showcase performances by a multitude of bands and artists throughout the Harrisburg area. I again look forward to meeting up with friends I usually only get to see each year during this event, discovering new bands, performers and music, and learning the latest music industry developments and trends. Once again, PA Musician will be present at the MMC trade show, and participating bands and artists are again invited to submit recordings and download cards into my 105.9 Qwik-Rock “Homegrown Rocker” radio show drop box to receive airplay on the show; one CD and one download card will again be randomly drawn at the end of the end of Saturday’s trade show, with those winners scoring guest interviews on a future editions of the program! Stop by the PA Musician table at the trade show and say hello! As mentioned last month, a nasty cold bug sidelined me from catching early holiday season live music events, but I did catch a few performances as 2019 transitioned into 2020. During the weekend between Christmas and New Year’s Day, eastern PA-based Beastie Boys tribute Brass Monkeys returned to McGarvey’s in Altoona. Kristoph Kostoff, Kirby Sybert, Dom Sciortino and Shawn Beck brought the music, beats, swagger and party fervor of the Beastie Boys to life in front of a packed house crowd. Local favorites Shallow 9 heated up the crowd, before Brass Monkeys ignited the house with favorites from throughout the Beastie Boys catalog, displaying constant stage movement, triggering sing-alongs and shout-alongs, fir-
ing off improvisational funky interludes, and rallying the crowd into a continuous, festive mood. Brass Monkeys mixed hits with deeper cuts – breaking out favorites such as their namesake song “Brass Monkey,” “Sabotage” and “No Sleep Till Brooklyn,” as well as rowdy Beastie numbers like “So What’Cha Want,” “The New Style,” “Root Down,” “Hey Ladies,” the punk-fueled “Heart Attack Man,” “Time to Get Ill” and more. Brass Monkeys’ energy was constant and kept the crowd at an elated high. When the crowd demanded an encore, Brass Monkeys responded with two more favorites, “Girls” and the Beastie Boys’ famous party anthem and hit, “Fight for Your Right (to Party).” I returned to McGarvey’s a few nights later to ring in New Year 2020. New Year’s Eve at McGarvey’s was a twopart event, opening with a buffet dinner and live comedy show featuring six comedians, providing two hours of steady laughter. Then leading up to midnight and guiding the audience into 2020 was live music with local contingent the Heavy Bottoms. Featuring frontman and guitarist Rogan Allen, drummer Keegan Allen and Nate Nagle on bass, the Heavy Bottoms mixed up a variety of classic rock, funk, blues and country. The group stirred up dance floor action and fired up the crowd with tunes from Stevie Wonder, T. Rex, Prince, Wild Cherry, Black Keys, KC & the Sunshine Band, Romantics, Matchbox 20, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Atlanta Rhythm Section, and their own bluesy original title song, “Heavy Bottoms.” After champagne, hugs, smiles, laughter, selfies and a cameo visit by McGarvey’s main man and lord of drink “Father Rich” got the New Year off to a happy start, the Heavy Bottoms returned to the stage to continue the musical festivities. The nightcap set featured tunes from Jet, Georgia Satellites, guest singer Brittany Boyles belting out lead voice on 4 Non Blondes’ “What’s Up,” Collective Soul, Ohio Players, Luke Bryan, Outkast and more to wrap up this glorious transition into 2020. With State College almost a ghost town while Penn State University students were away on holiday break, I took advantage of the relative quiet to catch up with local favorites Ted McCloskey & the Hi-Fi’s as they fired up their weekly Friday night party at the Phyrst. Ted on vocals and guitar, Molly Countermine on vocals, Rene Witzke on bass and Daryl Branford on drums played a wide mixture of classic and newer hits and favorites, and transformed them into their own inventive
styles and flavors. Molly sang the lead on a fresh, soulful take on “Wagon Wheel” as well as a roots-rock version of Elle King’s “Exes and Ohs.” There were wildly funky extended jam editions of Prince’s “Kiss” and “Let’s Get Crazy,” as well as Ted’s scorching guitar solo display for the homestretch of a funk-driven rendition of the Beatles’ “Come Together.” Ted and Molly led duet versions of Queen’s “Another One Bites the Dust” and Smashing Pumpkins’ “1979,” and the group honored requests for several original songs and Bob Dylan’s “Everything Is Broken.” There were also hot takes on tunes from Fleetwood Mac, Modest Mouse, Franz Ferdinand, Stevie Wonder, and their final number of the night smoothly gliding into a feisty version of “Auld Lang Syne” to close things out. Ted & the Hi-Fi’s musicianship, enthusiasm and excitement were off the map – this band pushed many of the songs into intense and heated finishes; and they never let off the gas even at the end of the night, when just me, one other fan and the bar staff were the only folks left in the house! The spirit of giving continued past the end of the holiday season, with two benefit shows last month in State College to help out area musicians and their families in need. The first was the Benefit for Jackie Brown & Family event, which took place at Cafe 210 West in State College. The concert raised $2,059 to help out Jackie and her family, as her daughter, Trishanna, receives medical treatment for Hirschsprung’s disease, a congenital bowel disorder. Cone Of Silence led off the show before my arrival, and had a mass of humanity in Café 210’s stage room happy as I stepped into the building. Next was The Skoal Brothers. This night’s cast of singer and guitarist Julian Allatt, Jackie Brown on vocals, John JT Thompson on keys and vocals, John Kennedy on bass and Stubby Stubbs on drums cut loose on a wide range of blues-based rock, funk and soul. This was my first time seeing Julian in action – this man can belt some voice and work those guitar strings! He and Jackie shared and alternated singing duties during the set, and the group’s energy level steadily escalated as the set went along. They broke out tunes from the Rolling Stones and Stevie Wonder, before launching a medley that connected tunes from Jimi Hendrix, the Beatles, Pink Floyd and the Grateful Dead, ending in the “Sunrise” fanfare from Richard Strauss’ “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (known continued on next page...

by many as the theme to the film “2001: A Space Odyssey”). It kept getting rowdier from there, as Jackie sang the lead on Led Zeppelin’s “Heartbreaker” into AC/DC’s “Highway to Hell,” and the group continued with more Led Zeppelin and AC/DC, firing off “How Many More Times” and “Whole Lotta Love” before returning to AC/DC for “Back in Black,” then going directly into Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” to slam the lid on the set! The Skoal Brothers (and sister) had the Café 201 crowd on their feet and roaring approval! More excitement was on deck, as Jackie and the Gill Street Band took the stage to blast brassy sounds. The dance floor was instantly packed as the group – nine members strong with four-piece horn section – kicked off their set. They brought the funk and soul, churning the dance floor with Cheryl Lynn’s “Got to Be Real,” Marvin Gaye & Tammi Terrell’s “Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,” Donna Summer’s “Bad Girls,” the Ike & Tina Turner version of “Proud Mary,” James Brown’s “I Feel Good” and more. Jackie and the Gill Street Band kept the energy and excitement constant, and kept the crowd on their feet; leading up to the heartwarming homestretch, when Jackie’s daughters Destiny and Diana joined their mother on the stage to sing on several numbers, including the Isley Brothers’ “It’s Your Thing,” the Jackson 5’s “Shake Your Body” and Earth Wind & Fire’s “September” to close the set. At song’s end, daughter Trishanna joined her mother and sisters on the stage, and the night reached a peak moment, as mother and daughters soaked in the collective energy and love from the crowd and the room. Finishing up the benefit was the J.R. Mangan Band with Veronica. That would be Veronica Auger, who sang much of the lead vocals, along with namesake J.R. on vocals and guitar, Jason Ebersole on bass and vocals, Mark Toci on lead guitar, and John Lynch on drums and vocals. They mixed it up with their hearty and fun blend of classic rock and hit favorites. They led off with Fleetwood Mac’s “The Chain,” with both Veronica and Jason sharing singing duties. That was just one of several Fleetwood Mac numbers; the group would later do a Mac block featuring “Dreams,” “Go Your Own Way” and “Landslide.” They also did numbers from the Rolling Stones, Led Zeppelin, A-ha, Cranberries, Don Henley, Hall & Oates, Goo Goo Dolls, Guns N’Roses, Amy Winehouse and more. Veronica’s voice was in excellent form; she especially nailed
Jefferson Airplane’s “White Rabbit!” Mark frequently displayed precision guitar work, and Jason and John kept the rhythms tight and moving. J.R. glued it all together with his acoustic guitar presence, and served as ringleader to fire up the remaining crowd in the house. This was an excellent night of music and fun, and it was heartening to witness the support of the State College community this night for Jackie Brown and her family. Unfortunately, wintry weather and treacherous road conditions prevented me from returning to State College the following weekend for the “Songs for a Friend: A Celebration to Benefit Our Brother, Mark Ross” concert, which took place at the State Theatre. Every seat in the house was sold out as a large cast of area musicians – including The Blue Hornet Band, Felix & the Hurricanes, Tyne & the Fastlyne, Triple A Blues Band, Ted McCloskey & the Hi-Fi’s, Miss Melanie, Strayer, Dawn Kinnard, Hannah Bingman, Raven & the Wren, Jamie Davis, Noah Figlin, Jason McIntyre, Junior Tutwiler and special guests – donated their talents to help out Mark as he battles a rare and aggressive form of cancer. A staple of the State College community and regional music scene, Mark has graced stages for more than 30 years as guitarist for Queen Bee & the Blue Hornet Band, Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats and other projects, and has been an educator and music store proprietor as well. Those who would like to donate to help Mark in his battle may do so by visiting http://bit.ly/MarkRoss. It was in 1989 that a young guitarist and singer named Felix Kos assembled the first edition of his new band, The Hurricanes, and started to build a fan based in his home area of Cresson and Gallitzin in Cambria County. After a few personnel moves, the current edition of the Hurricanes – Felix, bassist and singer Jeff Clapper and drummer Bob Watters – first came together in 1991. Both Jeff and Bob left the group in 1993 to pursue other projects, with bassist Bill Nusom and drummer and singer John McKnight replacing them. That Hurricanes lineup continued to expand its territory and fan base through the 1990s, before John left the group to relocate to his current home base of Atlanta, Georgia in 1997. Jeff and Bob rejoined Felix the following year, and Felix & the Hurricanes have continued nonstop ever since. The group marked their 30-year milestone last month with a special concert at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society. continued on next page...

Many ‘Hurricaniacs’ and other fans filled the room to celebrate as Felix, Jeff and Bob performed a variety of classic, southern rock favorites and original songs, welcoming several guests to join them on stage along the way. Guest guitarist Mike Borstnar joined the group early on during a rendition of Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Pride and Joy,” and Mike and This Albatross/Agent Smith guitarist Phil “Philly Grooves” Wagner joined the Hurricanes on a feisty read of Wilson Pickett’s “Mustang Sally” to open the second set. Singer Steve Oswalt joined the Hurricanes for much of the second set, lending his powerful voice on tunes from Ted Nugent, Journey, Delbert McClinton, Wild Cherry, Led Zeppelin’s “The Lemon Song” and more. And during the nightcap set, guest singer Lauren George joined in to sing on Dobie Gray’s “Drift Away.” Felix & the Hurricanes kept the crowd on the dance floor all night with favorites from Steppenwolf, Bob Seger, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Eric Clapton, Boz Scaggs, the Allman Brothers, Doobie Brothers, ZZ Top, Golden Earring and others, along with their own original song favorites “Walking A Straight Line” and “Keep On Rockin.’” As always, Felix & the Hurricanes left it all on the stage, playing for broke to keep the audience happy and dancing the whole night. And after 30 years, they continue to win new fans; I met a 50-year-old man who was seeing the group for the very first time this night! On the acoustic front, I caught my first look at Lonesome Road last month as they entertained at Hagen’s Irish Pub in Chest Springs. The Cambria County-based duo of singer and guitarist Mark Sekerak and percussionist Ben Frick performed a blend of acoustic rock and country favorites. Mark displayed a sturdy voice and friendly personality as he sang numbers from Seven Mary Three, Bruce Springsteen, Chris Stapleton, Nirvana, Tom Petty, Merle Haggard, Jason Isbell and more. He often offered perspective and insight on the numbers he and Ben performed, and honored some audience requests along the way. Lonesome Road returns to Hagen’s on March 21. And I got to take in several recent installments of the weekly Wednesday Jam Night at Altoona’s Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society, presented by The Live Music Preservation Society. Musicians young and old, seasoned and beginner show up and mix their talents on the stage, and newcomers are welcome. A newcomer to this Jam Night in recent weeks has been Englishman Ron Clayton, who sings and plays guitar. During one Jam Night, he led a group of jammers, and performed a song from across the pond that the audience hadn’t heard before, “Matchstalk Men and Matchstalk Men & Dogs,” a 1978 chart-topping hit in the U.K. by the duo Brian and Michael. Pleasant surprises are always a possibility at Wednesday Jam Night at the Unter Uns, and it’s always cool to see musicians stepping out of their band situation comfort zones to mix it up with other musicians on the stage! The area music scene was saddened by passings in recent weeks…Singer Biranda “Honey Brown” Goodman passed away on December 29 at age 36 following a brief illness. Biranda had sung in some Altoona-based soul and hip-hop projects, and she also hosted karaoke at area venues. She was also an alumnus and award winner with the late Dennie Huber’s “Crazy Fest” Amateur Youth Talent Show as well…And Robert DiVentura, Jr. passed away on January 24 at age 71 following a battle with cancer. Robert and his family have operated Altoona’s Pleasant Valley Recreation Center (including the Four Dees Lounge) for many years…Our condolences go out to the families and friends of both people. News and notes…The bands Black Sun, Maul, Darkness On The Radio, E.N.D., Paradigm and Roadkill will donate their talents on Feb. 16 during “Heavy Metal to Benefit Jen Johnstonbaugh Cuz F*** Cancer,” taking place at McGarvey’s; proceeds will help Jen – the wife of area drummer Darl continued on next page...

PA MUSICIAN REVIEWS By Jim Price
MEDUSA’S DISCO – ORPHIC GRIMOIRE (no label) Since 2013, Lancaster-based foursome Medusa’s Disco has steadily carved their unique niche in the state’s music scene, growing a rabid fan base with their fresh blend of indie-geared garage rock and Woodstock era-inspired hard rock psychedelia. Their latest album, Orphic Grimoire, continues to work that stylistic mixture and drive it in creative directions. The cast of singer, guitarist and sitarist Wynton Huddle, singer and guitarist Hunter Root, new bassist (and recording engineer) Justin Wohlfeil and drummer Alex Aument opts for shorter, more direct numbers over the lengthier and improvisational epics of their previous album, 2016’s Pure. As a result, the songs are more immediately catchy with quick hooks that snare attention, forcefully driven home by Medusa’s Disco’s raw, gofor-broke fervor. The opening guitar riff of the disc-opener “Dominoes” grabs attention, quickly leading into the song’s infectious melody and words about everyone’s impending mortality. Dark, heavier and waltz-like, “Book Upon My Shelf” expresses a reflective theme of flipping pages through one’s life. Bass and drum thunder launch “Painters Painting Paintings” and its lyrical quest for creative fulfillment, while a sitar passage triggers “Knowledge” with its catchy blend of 1960s-flavored psychedelia and surf rock tones. Medusa’s Disco unleashes punk-driven energy on “I Don’t Feel Anything,” while a saxophone combines with a Doors-like groove on the milder “Belly Ache.” “Tear It Apart”
bristles with garage-rock edginess, and the group channels some of their inner Zeppelin on “Waiting for Karma.” Medusa’s Disco never stays in one place for long on this album; each song is unique and attacks the senses from a different angle, keeping the listening experience fresh throughout. The group understands dynamics and how to keep listeners on their toes with sudden stops and shifting intensities. Their execution is tight yet throws caution to the wind, and this group captures a live, leave-it-allon-the-stage urgency throughout this set. The album sounds busy, full and edgy, and the result is an engaging set. Orphic Grimoire shows Medusa’s Disco continuing to stake and explore their sonic frontiers, and their mix of infectious songs and unpredictable twists and turns makes this a fun listening adventure. (The album can be obtained through the group’s website, www. medusasdisco.com, as well as through online retailers.) VAN WAGNER – SHORTLEAF PINE (no label) “Van Wagner. Born in Pennsylvania. Lives in Pennsylvania. Makes music. Mined coal. Logged trees. Teaches kids.” From Van’s website, these words capture Van’s career in a nutshell. For 20 years and more than 20 original music albums, the Danville-based singer, guitarist, songwriter, historian and teacher has entertained and educated listeners, blending his vast knowledge of Pennsylvania history, nature, geography and folklore with his distinctive and personal brand of acoustic, folk and Americana-based music. Van’s latest album, Shortleaf Pine, introduces 14 new songs that celebrate those aforementioned themes, mixed with his own experiences and perspectives. Consisting of Van on vocals and acoustic guitar, Mark Tomeo on dobro, and backing singers Kate Woodruff and Kiera Chillas; the presentation is stripped down, and this simplicity enables Van’s stories and observations to take front and center. title song, “Shortleaf Pine,” references a pine tree whose numbers in Pennsylvania have diminished over the years, and Van’s quest to see one, only to discover it 100 feet from his home; the song suggests that the world has wonders that can be discovered and appreciated if you keep your eyes and mind open. Recorded at the studios of WVIA in Scranton and featuring guitarist Tim Zieger and bassist Abbie Zieger, “Be Yourself” encourages listeners to be true to themselves and happy in their own skins. On the faster and folksy “Remember My Chains,” Van observes that humans are the only species in the world who can choose to change themselves for better or worse. Van sings about Pennsylvania history on several songs: “Molly Maguires,” exploring the role of the 19th century Irish secret society in the state’s mining communities; “Spanish Cross,” pondering an object found along the Susquehanna River and its meaning in the context of local history; and the album-closer “Prince Farrington,” about a prominent Prohibition-era Clinton County moonshiner and folk hero. Van touches on autobiographical themes on “Life Keeps Trying to Kill Me,” “They Didn’t Walk Out On Me” and “I’m Going Downhill,” and reflects on the ups and downs of canine ownership on “My Dog Days are Done.” Van’s voice is sturdy and heartfelt; you can tell that he feels every word he sings, and sense his emotions from happy to reflective to serious to somber. His melodies are simple yet captivating, and his words are relatable and thoughtful. Recorded and engineered by Jason Perez, the album overall sounds cohesive, balanced and full, and allows Van’s voice to stand broad in the mix. Shortleaf Pine contributes to Van Wagner’s growing legacy as one of this state’s premier folk singers and storytellers, and provides a relaxing, thoughtful and educational listening experience. (The CD can be purchased through Van Wagner’s website, www.vanwagnermusic.com.) THOMAS MICHAEL BRUNNER – THOMAS MICHAEL BRUNNER (Planet Pee Pee Records Worldwide) Altoona native Thomas Michael Brunner has been creating music since the early 1980s. During that span, he has crafted heavy metal and thrash metal in his band projects TBG (Tom Brunner Group) and Killer Elite, morphed into poultry onstage as ukulele-slinging solo act Elvis Chicken, and donned a shark outfit and shark-shaped

guitar as the performance entity Sharky. His new self-titled CD, Thomas Michael Brunner, offers a self portrait of the artist as a young rocker, chicken and shark, compiling a variety of songs and curios from his lengthy career over 18 tracks. Sporting a sombrero on the CD cover, Tom serves up his brand of Spanish-themed folk on the disc-opening “Senorita,” perhaps to pique listener curiosity to enter the rest of his unique musical world on the tracks to follow. The next seven tracks recap Tom’s early career, mixing material from his TBG and Killer Elite years with corresponding local radio footage of his airplay and achievements. “WFBG Radio” finds the Tom Brunner Group as the station’s weekly evening “Local Music Spotlight” feature in a 1984 interview clip produced by a budding radio “Professor” near the start of his career (boy did I sound ‘green’ back then, ha ha!); this leads into the dark, mostly-instrumental “Drone Factor Z,” which garnered TBG local WFBG airplay. More radio footage of TBG achieving the top-requested song on Jay Randyll’s nightly “Top 9 @ 9” feature on WFBG then leads into that requested song, TBG’s “Cheap Love.” And tapping WFBG radio history again, the track “All Night Album Rock” digs up a “Final Cut” review by the aforementioned “Professor” of a Killer Elite demo, leading into that band’s thrashy “Kill or Be Killed,” followed by two more Killer Elite tracks, “Thermo Thrash” and “Gladiator.” The CD then shifts into Tom’s Elvis Chicken incarnation, starting with the comic jazz-blues interlude “Dancing with the Changs,” channeling his inner Presley on “Blue Blue Bar-B-Q,” and taking the chicken on a thrash-laden ride with “Elvis Chicken Has Risen from His Happy Hole.” We then hear Tom/Elvis’ happy ukulele creations with the tropical “Coconut Island of Love,” “Electric Ukulele” and “Happy Hat,” before the CD enters Sharky-infested musical waters for the ominous metal instrumental “Drone Factor XZ7” (Tom’s sequel to “Drone Factor Z”), “Thrashin’ with Sharky” and the (Black) Sabbathy and stormy disc-closer “7even Seas.” As a musical autobiography, this album gives us a good representation of Tom’s music career arc, and we get a variety of his creations, from the mild and whimsical to the dark and sinister. Tom’s adventurous personality permeates all of these song offerings, and we hear his skills on bass, ukulele and voice. As these songs come from different parts of Tom’s career, sound quality can vary between the older and more recent material, but the overall mix level is consistent and listenable. Local fans of Tom Brunner’s career should find Thomas Michael Brunner an interesting and reminiscent

BLIND CHOICE – MENTAL SCARS EP (no label) Formed in early 2017, Scranton/Lehigh Valley-based trio Blind Choice introduce a fast-firing, punk-fueled style and sound on their foursong EP, Mental Scars. Lead singer and guitarist Dylan Pysher, bassist and backing singer Matt Habrial and drummer Tanner Snyder uncork hard-driving rhythms and velocity, powering catchy odes to personality clashes and youthful anxieties. Dylan battles nerves, apprehensions and heavy brain traffic on the fast and furious disc-opener “Balance on the Floor” with its slight hint of Green Day. Dylan is sick of being ignored on the angrier-toned “I Don’t Exist,” wary of deception and head games on “Stormy Night of Stray,” and laments a cohort’s change in personality on the disc’s final track, “Old Good Friend.” The songs are efficient, quick and to the point. Blind Choice’s instrumental execution is tight and forceful; the guitars snarl and the rhythms pound. Dylan displays good vocal range and clarity, and the lyrics are understandable and relatable. Engineered by Bret Alexander at Saturation Acres Recording Studios, this EP sounds clean, balanced and full, with all of Blind Choice’s components sounding distinguishable in the mix. Mental Scars introduces Blind Choice as a promising choice for punk rock fans to keep an eye on. (The EP can be purchased through the group’s website, www.blindchoiceband. com, as well as from CD Baby.)
