ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll

We made it through the 20th MIllennium Music Conference. Congratulations to John Harris and staff for another year of excellent music and networking. Thank you to all the musicians that stopped by our booth and graced our stage with your talent. The only problem with hearing all of you is than deciding what showcases to go to. I want to thank Dave and Chris Russell of D.P. Russell “The OMG” division of Event Server Inc. for providing the awesome stage, instruments and running sound for two days into the wee hours of the morning. Dave is a two time Emmy Award winning audio engineer. Besides doing sound for events “D.P.Russell” takes old antique pianos, guts them and replaces the works with electronic gear to create Antique Digital Pianos that never go out of tune and provide wonderful sounds and still provide the touch, feel and resonance of the original piano. This year he brought down a baby grand and piano players of all ages were enjoying it all weekend. If you’re in the market for a DJ, Karaoke, Open Mic with instruments or per chance you have an old piano that you are attached to and

want it converted to a digital piano give D.P Russell a call at 717.275.2999. You can also check out his ad in this issue for more details. Thanks again Dave and Chris, don’t know what we would do without you. So thankful that I don’t have to do sound anymore and I know the musicians are thankful I don’t do sound either.

Trevor of End of Silence getting advice on how to take advantage of what the MMC offers

D.P. Russell networking at the MMC Another thing I enjoy about the MMC is I get to spend time hanging with the PA Musician staff and watch them in action. I can’t do all that needs to be done to produce the PA Musician Magazine on my own so I have volunteers who help me every month because they love music and supporting musicians by

listening, taking photos and helping them out anyway they are able. Rachel started helping just because she didn’t want to sit at home being depressed, Jim Price is just a music addict that needed an outlet for his creative endeavors and didn’t want to sit at home. Meredith offered her services when she saw are pathetic cover shots, so she offered her services in exchange for advertising. Over the years I have had help from so many wonderful people and still do including Sterling Koch and Space from Penntera, yes I am blessed to have wonderful, talented people helping me put this big puzzle together each month. I continued on next page...

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks

WOW! What just happened?!? I can tell you it was a crazy whirlwind of amazing music! March Madness doesn’t mean basketball to me, it has a completely different meaning, it means I have to try and write about everything I saw and heard throughout the month of February and somehow get it all done in time for my March deadlines. I will have two separate articles this year, this one will be my regular ‘Out ‘N’ About shenanigans including Gettysburg Rocks, the other article will be all about the MMC, day and night happenings. Trust me, it needs it’s own article! Nothing to it but to do it.. here goes‌ The month started out long ago at Chick’s in Hummelstown for Element 22. I was thrilled to see the patrons of Chick’s GHĂ€QLWHO\ EURXJKW WKHLU GDQFLQJ VKRHV 7KH GDQFH Ă RRU ZDV SDFNHG with people having fun and dancing the night away. Bob Davis has been behind the kit for a few months now, but it’s cool to

VHH KLP Ă€WWLQJ LQ VR PDUYHORXVO\ :LWK DOO IRXU RI WKHP VLQJLQJ now their list of songs has opened up even more! Element 22 is constantly changing their set list, but keeping a lot of the favorites. Who doesn’t like a good sing-a-long?!? Speaking of singa-longs I was excited to see that Jeff and Dave acoustic duo will be back at Chick’s on March 19th for their big St. Patrick’s Day Party. I caught Jeff’s St. Patty’s day shows the past two years, they are always tons of fun with lots of crowd participation. Element 22 are really close to hitting 1,000 likes on Facebook.. Check out their page and give them a like and check out their ad in this issue to see where else they are rockin’ in March! The biggest shocker of the month was to see Back in Black at Double K. I have to admit I was a little leery of the whole process, but it actually turned out great. It was packed but people knew it was going to be and were prepared for it. They had a crazy amount of equipment on the “stageâ€? but it was super killer loud to the point where you couldn’t stand it. RSM did a great job at keeping things dialed in where they needed to be. It was great seeing Back In Black again, I’ve missed their last few trips to the midstate. They recently got a new member, Spencer is no longer with the band, they now have Dangus playing lead

guitar. When I saw them at Double K Donnie B. was the mastermind behind the guitar, it was awesome to see him on the stage with the boys again. I’m so glad that Double K was able to stay standing and have no major issues to report after having such a big show. Again it says a lot for the staff of Double K. They had all hands on deck and the ship sailed smoothly! Check out Double K’s DG LQ WKLV LVVXH WR Ă€QG RXW ZKDW WDOHQWHG EDQGV WKH\ have coming in March. The next weekend was the big Gettysburg Rocks event. Every year I have wanted to check this out but I always seem to have things going on. This year we had my son’s Pinewood Derby, but I still managed to check it out Saturday night. It all started with a delicious dinner at the Bourbon Bar and Grill with my good friends Sabrina and Patty. Unfortunately, I didn’t have WLPH WR VWD\ IRU WKHLU Ă€UVW EDQG Dirty Little Secret, but I had a schedule of bands that advertise in our pages and was trying to Ă€W LQ DV PDQ\ DV , SRVVLEO\ FRXOG 7KH Ă€UVW EDQG , GLG VHH ZDV D new advertiser, Six Bar Break at Zipper’s. Six Bar Break is “breakingâ€? out into the scene, keep an eye on these guys and let’s see where they go! Check out their ad in this issue. They have some great shows coming up this month with Single Barrel, the band that is also on our cover this month. The next band to play at Zipper’s was Whiskey Burn. Shortly after I got there they gave me one of their latest CDs which is awesome! I always love checking out new music. I only had WLPH WR OLVWHQ WR WKHLU Ă€UVW VRQJV EXW WKH\ GHĂ€QLWHO\ KHOSHG keep the party going at Zipper’s ,W ZDV JUHDW WR Ă€QDOO\ PDNH LW to Zipper’s for a show. I’ve seen their venue listed on so many bands schedules, but I just never made my way there. All of the staff did an amazing job at keeping things running smoothly. There was quite the crowd out to “Support the Kidsâ€?. My next stop was at the Gettysburg Moose. I’ve heard a lot about Medusa’s Disco out of Lancaster, and now I heard and saw why! They had a crazy amazing stage presence and harmonies that gave me goosebumps! It was awesome to see a band having so much fun on stage! The Gettysburg Moose had the cool set-up of two separate stages in one venue, so there was practically no downtime between bands. The next band was Mawcore. I’ve seen these guys name pop-up on Facebook, but never saw them before. With six guys on the stage they continued to keep the night rockin’. It was cool to see someone’s kiddo there rocking out to the show with big headphones on. All-Age shows are rare for some bands, so it’s always a cool WKLQJ WR H[SHULHQFH 0\ Ă€QDO EDQG DW Gettysburg Moose was J & the 9’s from Brooklyn. J is crazy! It was quite a drive between some of the venues. It’s times like this I wish I was a millionaire and I could’ve just ubered everywhere. McSherrystown Moose was absolutely packed when I arrived. It was awesome to see so many people out supporting live music and Gettysburg Rocks. When I arrived The Morris Brothers were on the stage. I wrote about The Morris Brothers before and someone asked if they are the same Morris Brothers Band from years ago playing carnivals as young boys.. Yes they are! The band started as their entire family including their Mom and Dad. Now they are down to just the two brothers, Carl and Bob Morris. I’ll tell ya one thing tho, they are all great musicians. NATIONALS By Eric Hoffman

Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! February consisted of three amazing National artists returning to the East Coast. Legendary NYC glam punk band Toilet Boys reunited again for the second time since they called it quits in 2003. The band performed twice on the night of February 13th with two sold out shows at St. Vitus Bar in Brooklyn. Many notable musicians attended the event including Debbie Harry of Blondie and Mike Williams of Biggy Stardust. Toilet Boys originated in 1995 with a volDWLOH KLJKO\ HQHUJHWLF VWDJH VKRZ ZKLFK LQFOXGHG HQGOHVV Ă€UHworks. Boy George of Culture Club recently joined the band for two new songs to be included on an upcoming greatest hits album. Michael Monroe former lead singer of glam metal band Hanoi Rocks returned to the United States for a quick 9 city tour. Monroe rocked the beautiful Sellersville Theatre located South of Allentown on February 16th. The energy of the band was unreal and includes Sami Yaffa of Hanoi Rocks and Steve Conte of the New York Dolls. It was great to share the event with friend and musician Jeffrey Gaines. Also in attendance were MTV’s Bam Margera from ‘Jackass’ and MTV VJ Jesse Camp. Hanoi Rocks was a Finnish rock band formed in 1979, whose most successful period came in the early 1980s. The band broke up in 1985, a year after their drummer Nicholas “Razzleâ€? Dingley had died in a car accident. Monroe has created 9 albums as a solo artist and last toured America in 2011. February 20th the incredible country artist, Junior Brown visited Building 24 Live in Wyomissing, PA. Brown began his music career in the 1960s playing for many groups while developing his guitar skills. By the mid-1980s he was teaching guitar at Rogers State University, in Oklahoma. In 1985, he created his signature instrument, the “guit-steelâ€? double neck guitar, a hybrid of electric guitar and lap steel guitar. Brown is mesmerizing to watch play guitar and has an amazing baritone singing voice. He has released 11 albums as a musician. Hershey has announced 11 major National concerts for 2016. Giant Center hosts Chicago and Earth, Wind and Fire on April 6. Brantley Gilbert on April 14. Janet Jackson on June 14. Keith Urban on November 17. Hersheypark Stadium has Disturbed and Rob Zombie on March 22. Luke Bryan and Little Big Town on June 6. Beyonce on June 12. Twenty-One Pilots on June 19. The Dixie Chicks on June 24. 5 Seconds of Summer on July 2. Demi Lovato and Nick Jonas on July 16. NATIONAL NEWS:Despite being seen by an average 24.95 million viewers, the recent 58th Annual Grammy Awards delivered a seven-year low in viewership. Taylor Swift’s RIĂ€cial switch from country to pop brought the singer her second Grammy Award win for album of the year. She also won album of the year in 2009. MMC# 20 SHENANIGANS! By Rachel Rocks I can’t believe the 20th Annual Millennium Music Conference is already over. I was counting down for so long and then before I knew it, it was gone! The good thing is nowadays with Social Media it is easy to keep supporting all of the bands we saw performing from all over the US and even some International travelers as well! What an amazing experience. I’m so glad I once again got to enjoy another MMC. Huge thanks to my MotherIn-Law for taking good care of my kiddos so I could really relax and enjoy every minute! 7KH 00& RIĂ€FLDOO\ VWDUWHG IRU PH 7KXUVGD\ DIWHUQRRQ ZKHQ , picked up my friend CK from the airport. CK has been coming to the MMC for at least 10 years helping out anyway she can, the last few years she has been the “Registration Girlâ€?, she loves meeting all of the artists and speakers and helping them with any info they might need. She comes all the way from Boston to volunteer. My other friend Heather, the “Mentoring Organizerâ€? KDV DOVR EHHQ KHOSLQJ IRU WKH SDVW \HDUV 6KH Ă LHV DOO WKH ZD\ in from Texas to volunteer. they truly both deserve huge kudos for helping the conference stay organized. Every year I look forward to spending time with these lovely ladies and belly laughing til it hurts, and of course we love sharing our GummiBears and Worms! Another huge congrats and Thank You! Goes out to John Harris himself. It’s his vision, patience, and guidance that has created this great conference! It’s always so perfect, just big enough to get some great speakers and mentors, yet small enough that you can actually get some one on one time with the people that you want to meet and network with. I can’t even imagine all the stress of choosing the artists and lining up all of the venues. Congrats to you and your team for doing an amazing job. Every year I’m truly blown away by all of the talent at the MMC. Great work John! One of the best things about the Best Western Premiere Hotel being the host hotel, is O’Reilly’s. It’s so nice having a full bar and restaurant in the same building as the conference. Now that it’s the 3rd year, I’ve created friendships with a lot of the Best Western staff. Taylor, Matt, and Elise do an amazing job at manning the bar and keeping their patrons happy! It says a lot for the hotel that these 3 have been there the past 3 years. Also Lawrence on the set-up/ tear down crew, he was always there to help us when we needed it and however we needed it! The entire Best Western staff was extremely accommodating and helpful. Out of all of the host hotels, I’d have to say I like the Best Western the best! I saw Andrea perform quite a few years ago and I was impressed with her then. Her originals are amazing and she has such a great voice mixing Folk and Pop to help her fans feel her lyrics. I KHDUG D ORW DERXW WKHVH JX\V EXW LW ZDV P\ Ă€UVW WLPH FDWFKLQJ them Out & About. What a special treat! With amazing lead vocals and even more amazing musicians, it was truly a great set. They had a sax and keys, two instruments you don’t get the chance to hear too often locally. Their music was all very

Shawan & the Wontons groovy and you couldn’t help to at least bop your head if not dance around! Next up were another Harrisburg based band, Flower Garden. These guys had a funky groove, almost like a jam band kind of feel, but the best part about them were their harmonies. I have a soft-spot for great harmonies and they nailed them! Flower Garden also had a very interesting, hard to forget drum kit. It was amazing the beats their drummer could get that little kit to produce! Single Barrel ~ Daring to be Different

Article & feature photos by Rachel Rocks Looking for something different but yet intriguing all they quickly realized they were going to need a full band! at the same time? Then look no further, Single Barrel is Luckily from working at Triple R Guitar, Chris knows the band for you. Just like every whiskey barrel that’s ever D EXQFK RI PXVLFLDQV VR KH ZDV TXLFNO\ DEOH WR Ă€QG Ron made, this local band is just a little bit different than the Emanuel to play bass, and then a no-brainer, they asked average band at your local watering hole. The best way to describe it third show they actually opened for David Allen Coe at is Outlaw Country, Modern Southern Rock and good ‘ole Reverb in Reading, PA, which was a huge opportunity for them. They got a great response and after that experience Rock n’ Roll. Clint Lyons had an idea for a project like this about 3 they knew that people would be receptive to the music \HDUV DJR EXW KH MXVW QHHGHG WR Ă€QG WKH ULJKW SOD\HUV 2QH they wanted to perform and they’ve been booking gigs ever since. Single Barrel is lucky to have two very talented guitar players. Clint and Chris both share the responsibility of playing lead and rhythm guitar, and sometimes it seems that they are playing simultaneously. Chris is busy singing lead vocals, so he says it’s nice to have someone share

Clint Lyons night he was out listening to Chris DellaPorta’s other band, Smokin Gunnz, and he saw Chris sing lead on a song and he got the idea that Chris might be able to be the front man. Little did he know, then, that Chris had a very similar idea in mind. When he talked to Chris about it they thought it would work to just play as an acoustic duo. But, before they knew it, they were offered a gig to play Savannah’s with the Trailer Park Cowboys, and

Bob does get opportunities to take the lead on a few tunes from Travis Tritt, Dwight Yoakam as well as some tunes they’re currently working on. One thing worth mentioning is that, just because Bob and Chris are also in Smokin Gunnz, Single Barrel is a completely different project. They don’t sing the same songs, and Bob even plays a completely different drum kit with a completely different technique and style. Single Barrel plays “Outlawâ€? music. A lot of the times it’s about sex, guns, and rock n’ roll, taboo subject matter that the main stream artists seem to steer clear of. Unfortunately, in this day and age, all of those subjects are a big part of everyday reality, so most people can easily relate to the songs they play from artists like Blackberry Smoke, The Departed, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Kentucky Headhunters, Shooter and Waylon Jennings, Gov’t Mule, Jason Isbell, Marty Stuart, Sturgill Simpson and many more. THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price

The annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg has – over its two-decade history – become one of the centerpieces to my entire year. And while much of that stems from the opportunities to spend time with PA Musician cohorts and other friends, plus witness and discover lots of music, a major part of my Millennium experience is being able to reset my compass on the current state of the music industry, both major and local. This year’s Millennium keynote speaker, producer David Ivory, slammed the exclamation point on the state of the current major music industry and how things have changed. The emphasis on music sales has returned to single songs instead of albums, and streaming has impacted the bottom line on royalties and other earnings from music sales. Ivory cited a statement he received for a song that had been streamed 130,000 times; his royalty from that streaming was just seven dollars. As the producer who took young Lzzy Hale under his wing years ago to help develop her songwriting skills, Ivory told the audience that if a potential new ‘Lzzy’ would appear before him today, “I would be very concerned about putting my time into her‌Because where is my pot of gold at the end of the rainbow as a producer? The panel cited local music and specialty music programs as great vehicles to develop listeners and fan bases, and they encouraged musicians to seek out and develop associations with local music programs and the radio outlets who support them. Nearly 300 artists and acts converged on the Harrisburg area for this year’s Millennium, and although I only got to see a limited number of them, several performances during the weekend made their marks on me. Never failing to provide such an impact is Mycenea Worley, whose performances I witnessed both during the conference trade show on the PA Musician stage, and at the Cornerstone Coffeehouse in Camp Hill. Mycenea has a way of weaving words, feelings and personality into song vignettes that reveal her mood and mind.

Following Mycenea’s set at Cornerstone Coffeehouse, teenaged Charlotte, NC-based singer/songwriter Nick Wells also showed the knack of blending words, mood and a minimal, delicate approach into something truly special. The 17-year-old performer used simplicity and quiet to accent his deep, poetic lyrics; expressing sentiments about a special lady on the song “Little Lion Girl,â€? and expressing appreciation on the set-ending “Mother’s Love,â€? as his mom sat in the audience. THE PROFESSOR continued... a hearty, soaring singing voice and bright mood during her performances. I witnessed a number of other talented performers on the daytime trade show stage. One was a returning artist from last year’s conference, 18-year-old southeastern PA-based singer/pianist Aubreylyn. During her extended trade show set, Aubreylyn demonstrated ornate, jazz-informed arrangements and melodies, plus a strong, dynamic voice and lots of poise. Collaborating with producer David Ivory and studying music education and jazz at McGill University in Montreal, Aubreylyn’s future looks very bright. I also enjoyed New Jersey newcomer Taylor Tote and her band, playing a fun and frisky brand of funky rock, pop DQG VRXO UHWXUQLQJ WUDGH VKRZ VWDJH IUHTXHQW Ă \HU -XVWLQ $QJHlo with his brand of modern, acoustic-toned rock; plus Harrisburg folk-rock performers Roger Hammer & JT, Virginia Beach country performers Buck Shot, Harrisburg roots rockers Six Bar Break, New Jersey folk-rockers The Coteries, Scranton/Nashville country artist Dani-elle and her band, teenage New Yorkbased singer/musician AmeliaRose, Hawaii acoustic duo Sweet Corn & Peanut, Wiconisco rockers Broken Fayth, Harrisburg native (now based in Brooklyn) singer/songwriter Eli Costello, returning Washington, DC singer/songwriter Matt Tarka, Boston singer/songwriter Molly BrulĂŠ, Lancaster’s The Stonewall Vessels, Kutztown singer/songwriter John Hufford, Pittsburgh singer/songwriter Corey James and more. It was all good, including the trade show-ending all-star jam and late night jam sessions! I saw the Crossroads Duo and the Jukehouse Bombers perform on the Millennium trade show stage too, but also caught their performances during the blues-themed showcase at Harrisburg’s River City Blues Club. The Crossroads Duo opened the night. Sterling Koch on acoustic guitar and vocals plus harPRQLFD SOD\HU -DFN .XOS SOD\HG D EOHQG RI DFRXVWLF EOXHV Ă Dvored original songs and select covers. The singing and guitar-wielding father-and-son tandem of Jimmy and Joe Roach, guitarist Kirsch, bassist/singer Troy Laney and drummer Dave Vernot took raw, gritty traditional blues and packed rocking thunder behind it. They won new fans with powerful tunes off their forthcoming new CD like “When the Rooster Gets to Crowin’â€? and “My Dues Ain’t Ever Paid,â€? songs from their self-titled EP such as “Real Bad Feelin’â€? and the prison chant-themed “Born to Hard Time,â€? and select covers, including an Anders Osborne number (where Joe brandished his cigar box guitar) and a scorching take on the Allman Brothers/Molly Hatchet’s “Dreams I’ll Never See.â€? (Thanks for the shout-out guys!) Next was New York City’s Jake Tavill and his six-piece band, who introduced a modern melody-geared sound that blended elements of pop, blues and soul. Jake and his cast, which included a trumpeter and a bongo player, delivered a bright, upbeat presentation with consistently smooth instrumental chops, as they performed numerous original songs and a fun take on Stevie Wonder’s “Isn’t She Lovely.â€? Jake crooned with a smooth voice that nicely conveyed the evocative lyrics of such song compositions as “I Won’t Go,â€? “C’est La Vie,â€? the funky set-closing workout “Weekend Girlfriendâ€? and more. And from the Lehigh Valley, the Dana Gaynor Band slammed the lid on the night with an excellent set of original blues-geared tunes. DAVE BRINKLEY TRIBUTE Monday, February 4th, 1963 Home: Thursday, Feb 18th, 2016 By Rachel Brinkley Dave Brinkley was a musician, friend, brother, husband, father and grandfather. His parents gave him the amazing gift of music that he carried with him throughout his life. Dave was very talented when it came to percussion instruments, guitar and vocals. He was able to pick up just about any instrument and learn to play on his own. You could always catch him playing air drums on his steering wheel while on the road as a Culligan Man. Even while he was sick he would still try to go to the family waiting room at the hospital to play some Todd Rundgren on the keyboard. There is so much to say about Dave Brinkley, but I think everyone would agree that God needed a drummer the day Dave left us and he received the best one we have. March, 2016
