ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll
The March issue is nearing completion and I am almost set to get there on time, but we’ll see. Update on my health issues. My insurance kicks in March 1st so on March 6th I get to go get a nuclear test done on my parathyroid gland. There are 4 little ones in your neck and I have one that went rogue and has messed up my system. Although they are small, they are mighty and have a lot to do with keeping ones body functioning properly. After they find it they’ll go in and remove it. Then I have to go in April 6th to have the kidney stones blasted and removed. In and out they say but then “everyone is different” so we’ll see. So thankful that God has blessed me with children who are now pitching in and taking care of me. Rachel has been at every appointment and missing her paying job. She also covered the Millennium Music Conference along with Jim Price and Meredith Kaminek. I had to stay home and get the March issue together for all of our faithful readers. Feel free to send any donations our way, ONLY if you have extra money laying around that you don’t know what to do with. So many people are in need today and many are struggling to keep the lights on and food on the table. One thing with Facebook it makes one realize we’re not alone in our troubles but I am thankful that my Heavenly Father does take care of me and is healing me with the help of His saints throughout PA and beyond. Even though evil is increasing there are an awful lot of very generous and kind hearted people in our world. THANK YOU for your prayers and concern. Moving on to the music. I can still drive and get around ( I
just get tired quicker) and I went to see Kate Greene, my grand daughter, perform in County and District band last month. Every time I attend one of these events it amazes me how talented young musicians are and how hard they work on their music. They are given the music a head of time to check out but they have an intense night and morning to prepare for the concerts learning about 5 or so musical pieces. All the music teachers involved and the parents supplying the instruments and extra lessons to develop their talent. I do hope that the government continues to support the arts in our schools, it is so important for our children and our communities. She also had her Spring concert where she had 3 or 4 solos to perform with her clarinet. I’m always in awe of these events. Thankful for all you performers out there who share your talent with all of us as I listen to music all day long, imagine a world with out music (don’t even want to go there). Also in February our precious Kate turned 17 on February 23rd. HAPPY BIRTHDAY KATE!! As I was gathering photos to place in the ads this month I came across some interesting facts about Harrisburg’s Mountain Road who will be performing at Tubby’s in Duncannon on Saturday, March 25th. They have accomplished a great deal in the last few years. I don’t know how much longer you’ll be able to hear them and see them up close and personal for $5. They seem to be on the fast track of moving on to the big time. I got this info off of their website… Described as “the perfect blend of current meets classic,” Mountain Road is a dynamic, four-piece country/southern rock band that has wowed audiences on a local, regional, and national level. From Nashville to New York City, from Arizona to South Carolina, and from Indianapolis to Austin, Mountain Road has made a name for themselves with their original music, which possesses a timeless quality that aims to please every listener’s ear. Mountain Road has shared the stage with a number of national acts (including Big & Rich, LoCash, Blackberry Smoke, David Allan Coe, Lonestar, Gary Allan, Thompson Square, Frankie Ballard, Lauren Alaina, Jerrod Niemann, Joe Nichols, Trailer Choir, Love & Theft and more)! The band has been compared to Chris Stapleton, Zac Brown Band, and The Eagles. Keep an ear out for the music of Mountain Road; it’ll be hitting country radio soon! Their new album “Momentum” (released in 2017) is available now on iTunes, Spotify, Amazon Music, etc. In 2016 lead singer, Kevin Cole received a ‘Red Ticket’ from “The Voice”. You can check them out on Facebook/moutainroad and they have a website as well. Speaking of Tubby’s they are fast becoming one of the major clubs in the area for live entertainment. Emily’s Toybox returns to entertain all who come on St. Patty’s Day. Talk about talented
musicians. You don’t only get to hear great music performed with precision but you get to enjoy the antics of Mike Wise, which always proves to be interesting. I have had the opportunity to see them a few times and it is always a fun event. The first 100 people walking through the door will receive a domestic draft token. Doors open at 7pm on St. Patty’s Day. Another club that is bringing more and more talent to the York area is Race Horse Tavern. Jim has recently remodeled and is changing his weekly entertainment to what his clientele ask for. Jim is presenting quality acts at his establishment as well. This month is the return of Madison Rising and The Blues Vultures featuring Ronnie Younkins member of Kix. Also he is having local talent Disorderly Conduct, Steel and Son of Man. Whenever I drop off the PA Musician magazines there it gives me the impression of having a ‘Cheers” atmosphere where everyone knows your name. Not that they know everyone but they are very friendly and welcoming. It’s getting close to the time to be at the printers so I must hurry and get this there on time. OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
March is going to be here soon and the last couple of days have felt like May!! I’m really wishing and hoping that this weather will hang in there and the freezing cold temps won’t come back, but alas it is technically February, so I’m sure there will still be time for gloves, hats, and winter coats. I’m trying my hardest to get all of my work done and out of the way so I can enjoy the Millennium Music Conference in just a few days.. All of the coverage from the MMC will be in my April article. I know it seems crazy, but unfortunately we have deadlines to meet, and since the MMC was technically pushed back a week further than usual, we just can’t get it all done in time to be printed for the March issue. So in the meantime I hope you enjoy reading about all of my shenanigans Out & About in the Harrisburg area and beyond! My first night out for this issue happened quite a while ago back on January 27th at Gullifty’s to see Take 147. Save the City opened for them, but as usual I missed the opening act. I heard that Save the City was just as amazing as ever, bummed I missed them. The Take 147 party was in full swing when I arrived. It was awesome to see the dance floor so packed with everyone up dancing and having a great time. It seems to be working out great for Take 147 to only be playing once every couple of months. It gives them enough time to practice in between shows, plus it leaves enough time that all of their fans miss them and come to each and every show they possibly can! I know I do!! Their next big show is April 7th at the Silver Lake Inn in Lewisberry. The Silver Lake Inn has recently done some amazing renovations. Maybe this time if we are lucky it won’t feel like the floor is going to fall through when all of the takers are jumping up and down and dancing along to the music. Keep an eye on their Facebook page for all of the updates on shows and shenanigans: facebook.com/Take-147. It’s hard to believe that was my last show I will see at Gullifty’s. If you haven’t heard after over 40 years in business Gullifty’s has closed their doors and sold the business to a new owner. I’ve heard that the new owner is making some renovations, but plans to open in 2 or 3 months. We are obviously hoping they still keep the Underground part of Gullifty’s as a live entertainment venue when they reopen. The music venues are getting few and far between around Harrisburg, and it would be so sad to lose another one. I want to shout out a huge THANK YOU to the whole Eisenhower family for your continual support of the PA Musician Magazine and for all of their years of hosting live music. I saw plenty of great shows in the Underground, and we even threw a few parties there. Hopefully when the new owners do reopen they get some air conditioning, and some outlets for charging cell phones that keep searching for cell service. Even better yet would be WiFi that can handle the capacity of a full club. If people can be surfing on their phones and taking pictures and instantly posting the fun they are having, it is much better for the business then not even being able to get or send a text message. It’s a little hard
to let friends know where you are and keep your Social Media pages updated when you are literally ‘under ground’. Next up it was time for the madness of delivering the magazines, not only my regular Harrisburg, Lancaster, Reading run, but I also had to deliver Mom’s and I have a much better appreciation of everywhere she drives every month… WHAT A TRIP! So thankful for Meredith Kaminek for doing the York area for me and my brother Josh for running them up to Jeff Pittinger at the Lycoming Valley Mall, but I still had to do here there and everywhere in between!!! Note to self.. DO NOT TAKE 125 from Shamokin to Tower City… BIG MISTAKE! The GPS said it would save 4 minutes from the way Mom TOLD me to go, but did I listen to my Mom, who has been making this trip for YEARS, nope, I trusted the GPS.. Well… up and over 3 huge mountains, my car smelling like it was going to blow up, and brakes that felt like they were going to give out, I finally made it to Wiscount Music in Tower City. Needless to say I kissed the ground when I got out of the car, and I learned a valuable lesson… ALWAYS LISTEN TO YOUR MOTHER! Our delivery route is pretty crazy. I learned that you are pretty much always 15 minutes away from a hard copy of the PA Musician Magazine. Every time I entered my next stop into my GPS on average it seemed like it was always about 15 minutes away. Pretty crazy to say the least, but you can find them everywhere from gas stations, to clubs, to music stores, to restaurants, and a couple of other places in between. All together in 3 days I drove 782 miles. I am definitely looking forward to having Mom back to normal again so she can resume her own delivery route. I found out I’ll be out there burning rubber delivering the March and April issues too, Mom’s surgery date isn’t until April 7th. Hopefully she will be all healed up and ready for May’s issue, and a trip to the beach for Mother’s Day, we both desperately need it! While I was out delivering I was very excited every time I found some live music to sit back and enjoy. My first lucky stop was at Shank’s Tavern in Marietta. It was Thursday night and they were hosting their Open Mic night. By the time I got there it was pretty much just one big jam, but everyone seemed like they were having a good time. When I walked in the door I literally almost stumbled on Bobby Gentilo who was also there supporting the live music scene. It was cool to catch up with Bobby from Right Coast Recording, and also to check out a different venue. There isn’t that much space at Shank’s, but everyone squeezed in and enjoyed the music. Evil Lou was filling in as the lead singer. He must not be too evil because when he finally got a break he came over and introduced himself. I also recognized Bob Noble on guitar. It’s been quite a few years since I heard him play. After hanging out for a while it was time to get back on the road and finish my deliveries. Right down the street at McCleary’s Public House they seem to have some pretty awesome live music on Friday and Saturday nights. Definitely worth checking out sometime. The next night I was zooming through Fredericksburg and delivering at the Eagle Hotel when I heard 2 Gunnz Unplugged playing in the corner. I quickly decided it was time for some dinner, after all, The Fredericksburg Eagle Hotel has amazing food. It was my first time hearing just Bob and Mike playing acoustically. I always enjoy hearing bands stripped down so you can truly enjoy their vocals. It was a great way to spend

Mike & Bob / 2 Gunnz unplugged my dinner break. The Eagle Hotel always has a great line up of bands and food. Make sure and check out their ad in this issue for all of the details. By the time I got delivering I was too exhausted to actually go out on the weekend and drive anywhere, so I stayed home and recouped and spent time with the family. By the time Tuesday rolled around it already felt like a really long week, so I called my good friend Kristin and we headed over to Grotto’s Pub for Nate Myers & Pete. It was just what I needed to get through the rest of the week. Hearing just Nate & Pete together was again refreshing. I even got the chance to see and hear Nate sing and play with his acoustic guitar. He even sang one of my favorite originals, “Beauty All Around” off of their “Persist” album. The Grotto itself is a cool little venue. Warning to the wise, if you order Nachos be prepared to eat A LOT! The following weekend I had quite a few people telling me they were heading to Joe K’s to see The Famous. I’ve heard continued on page 11...

Out & About continued a lot about The Famous and I was excited to finally get the chance to catch them Out & About. I loved Joey Dalto in his old band Echoburn, so I was excited enough just to hear him sing again, but add in the fact that the other FIVE people in the band can all sing, and you are in for a serious treat. I knew everyone else from previous bands: Steve, Shelby, Michael, and Trent were all part of American Posse, and now they also have Erik Avakian, the former keyboardist for Fuel. All six of them can sing lead and you will be amazed at the variety of songs they can pull off in just one set. Joey Dalto / The Famous The songs they choose from the 70’s and 80’s are definitely songs you recognize, but they are also songs that you don’t hear too many other bands covering. Everything from Pat Benetar to Journey and even Billy Joel just to name a few. One ironic part of the night was when I was walking through the crowded room I overheard two guys saying, “This place is packed, who are these guys?” Then the other guy said, “I don’t know but they must be somebody Famous…” Almost guys, but their real name is The Famous. They are encouraging all of their fans to come out and ‘Be Famous’ too! They have quite a few shows coming up, but one big one is a St. Patty’s Day Bash on March 17th back at Joe K’s Brewhouse. Since The Famous had an early set at Joe K’s I still had time for one more stop. My final stop of the night was out to Double K to see Hot Like Molly. I was very happy to see and hear that they were able to find a new guitar player, Aaron Grubb. He’s definitely holding his own and was welcomed into the band with open arms. I got there rather late, because I’m a slacker, but shortly after I got there they announced they have one more song. Of course I complained and then they wound up playing about 5 more songs and about an extra 20 minutes!! Thank you Hot Like Molly for finding the energy to keep rockin’ so I could enjoy your show. You are definitely NOT slackers, that is one thing for sure. I was super impressed when they even played “Psycho” for me, which I was told they played earlier in the night. “Psycho” definitely takes some intense energy and everyone in the band pulled it off flawlessly. I can’t believe how Jamie Kay can sing those crazy songs. She has one heck of a set of pipes on her for sure! The guys all do a great job backing her up, but she can hold her own too. Keep an eye out for Hot Like Molly, I’m sure you will be seeing them pop up at a venue near you soon. The last band of the month was Fell From Zero at Tubby’s. Fell From Zero was recently on our cover, we scheduled a time to meet to do the interview weeks ahead of time, and unfortunately I forgot all about it, and I was a no show. I felt absolutely horrible, but the guys were all super flexible and allowed me to just interview them through e-mail. These things happen, I’m just very lucky that it happened with such a cool, laid back group of guys. They might be cool, calm and collected off the stage, but on the stage they are a bunch of maniacs. It’s been a while since I saw a band covering all of the harder rock songs, and even metal songs, so it even seemed more intense. These guys are so serious about rocking all night long that they even played a ‘metal’ version of Taylor Swift’s “Blank Spaces” song. It was hilarious and super cool all at the same time, especially when Jake threw in the real metal growls from behind the drum kit. Fell From Zero has their own special twists on a lot of your favorite songs. They are definitely good at ‘metaling’ them up even more to keep the dance floor rockin’. I’m glad I finally got a chance to catch these guys again. You can check out their schedule in this issue as part of the Den Mother Music ad. If you like harder rock, get out there and check these guys out, you won’t be disappointed. Well that’s all for this month. Whoohoo! One more step complete til I get to go to the MMC!! Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! Twenty One Pilots brought their lengthy tour “Emotional Roadshow” to Allentown’s PPL Center last month, which began in May 2016. The music duo from Columbus, Ohio sold-out Hersheypark Stadium last Summer to the largest crowd in their history of 30,000 fans on June 19. Twenty One Pilots had no problem selling out the 10,500 Allentown arena and put on an impressive show of theatrics and great music. The band known for hit “Stressed Out,” were recently nominated for five Grammy Awards, and won one for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. Country artist Junior Brown visited the Sellersville Theatre for an amazing night of classic Americana music. The 64year old musician has released nine studio albums in his career. In 1985 he invented a double neck guitar, a hybrid of electric guitar and lap steel guitar, it has become his signature instrument known as the “guit-steel.” Brown has charted twice on

Billboard for songs “Highway Patrol” and “My Wife Thinks You’re Dead.” Junior Brown is a must-see show, whether you’re a fan of country music or not, a musician of incredible talent and charisma. Super Bowl Sunday Jack Pyers played the Cornerstone Coffeeshop in Camp Hill. Back in the day, Pyers was a member of Atlantic Recording artists, Dirty Looks, and also an original member of Harpo. Recently Pyers has been recording with Bret Alexander (Badlees) and Jeremy Hummel (Breaking Benjamin). The material is quite different than the metal days, but it still has that edge and hard passion. It was great to meet Jack and learn about his music history and hear about his music future. Pyers, recorded his solo album “No Road Home” in 2015, released on Sticky Records. His second solo effort “Well of Souls,” is available online and soon on CD. NATIONAL NEWS: The Grammys on February 12 provided an extraordinary moment between the music industry’s top female artists, Adele beat Beyoncé for three of the top Grammy Awards – then said her competitor deserved at least one of them. Adele’s “Hello” won Grammys for song and record of the year and called it “my favorite song I’ve ever done.”
In tears, Adele addressed Beyoncé, praising “Lemonade” as monumental, beautiful and soul-baring, and then stated “She is my icon of my whole life.” During Lady Gaga’s energetic pairing with Metallica - duet partner James Hetfield’s microphone malfunctioned and he couldn’t be heard for two verses. He kicked the mic stand over and angrily threw his guitar when the song was done. Bruno Mars paid tribute to the late Prince performing “That’s What I Like” and “Let’s Go Crazy.” Adele won five Grammys, David Bowie won four, and Chance the Rapper won three awards, including the coveted best new artist trophy. David Bowie, who died of cancer in January 2016, won each time he was nominated for “Blackstar,” his critically praised final album. Twenty One Pilots won best pop duo/ group performance for the hit “Stressed Out.” Sturgill Simpson, won best country album for “A Sailor’s Guide to Earth.” Following its electrifying performance with Lady Gaga at the Grammy Awards, Metallica announces North American dates for its “WorldWired Tour.” Touring in support of its “Hardwired … To Self-Destruct” album, the metal band will be playing mostly football and baseball stadiums as well as a few festivals. The 2017 Metallica North American dates begin in Baltimore on May 10 at MT&T Bank Stadium and then visits Philadelphia on May 12 at Lincoln Financial Field. Avenged, Sevenfold and Volbeat will appear on select dates. Blondie and Garbage are teaming up for the “Rage and Rapture” co-headline tour that will have the bands on the road for more than a month together in the summer. Deap Vally, and John Doe & Exene Cervenka of X are supporting the run. Blondie have a new LP out, titled “Pollinator”, May 5. Garbage will be playing tunes from last year’s, “Strange Little Birds”. The tour visits August 2 – Philadelphia’s Mann Center for Performing Arts. Riding the wave of energy from her Super Bowl halftime performance, Lady Gaga announces the “Joanne World Tour.” The outing will include stadiums and arenas, in the U.S. and internationally. There’s nothing like striking when the proverbial iron is hot. Gaga’s flashy Super Bowl halftime performance turned out to be very lucrative. The superstar singer who performed at the halftime show sold about 150,000 digital albums and songs in the U.S. on Sunday, a 1,000 percent increase over the day before. Lady Gaga visits Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on September 10, Washington DC Verizon Center on November 19 and Pittsburgh’s PPG Paints Arena on November 20. All arena performances will feature general admission on the floor. Beyoncé has broken the record for the most-liked Instagram post ever when she announced that she is expecting twins with husband Jay Z. Queen Bey shows off her baby bump in a Madonna-inspired photo, with more than 8 million likes and counting. “We have been blessed two times over. We are incredibly grateful that our family will be growing by two,” said a statement signed “The Carters,” Jay Z’s real last name. The news triggered half a million tweets in 45 minutes, according to Twitter. Beyoncé and Jay Z routinely make listings of the most powerful people in the entertainment industry. She is the most nominated woman in Grammy Awards history, with 53 nominations and 20 wins. Pixies will be rocking North America this spring in a tour that will stretch for more than a month. The shows will be opened by either Public Access T.V. or Cymbals Eat Guitars. Pixies does not use a firm setlist, boasting a catalogue of 90 rehearsed songs which it mixes and matches each night. Pixies is Joey Santiago on guitar, Black Francisco on guitar and vocals, David Lovering on drums and relative newcomer Paz Lenchantin on bass. Dates include: May 16, Washington, D.C., Lincoln Theatre and May 23, Philadelphia’s Electric Factory. The recently knighted Sir Rod Stewart is joining forces with special guest Cyndi Lauper for a full North American tour over the summer. Despite being 72 years old, Stewart is still trotting the globe in a big way. Cyndi Lauper will tour Australia with Blondie in April before joining Stewart in the States. Talkin’ Shop with Creter Guitar Shop Photos & Article by Rachel Rocks Buy, Sell, Trade, Teach, Speak, and Fix Guitars... Since 1984 Creter Guitar Shop in Jonestown, PA does all of that, and so much more. Mom and I had the opportunity to stop in and visit with Matt Creter and his right hand man, Ron Yantz to find out everything that Creter Guitar Shop has to offer. They were closely protected by their shop mascot, Arlo. As soon as you walk through the door you are quickly amazed by the amount of guitars hanging on the walls, acoustic on one wall, electric on the other. Matt has plenty of guitars for everyone from beginner, all the way up to the professional level. Plus, in every little space they have all the gadgets and gizmos you can imagine for fixing and accessorizing your guitar. If they don’t have it, chances are it doesn’t exist! Since they also trade guitars they have a few extra special ones in special cases throughout the shop. One of the super special guitars is a Fender Stratocaster signed by the one and only Stevie Ray Vaughan. Not only does it have his signature, but he also wrote,
“Play her with a feelin!”
This particular guitar was signed in February of 1991, just six months before Stevie Ray died in the plane crash. Matt has quite the story on how he acquired the guitar too that I’m sure he would love to tell you about. Matt grew up in a family that loved music. His Dad, Fred Creter always had music playing, he was a big BB King fan, and always had a harmonica in his pocket. Matt’s passion for guitar happened many years ago around the age of 10 when he would sneak into his big brother Steve’s room to play his guitar. At 12 years old he finally got his first guitar, an Emenee Tiger! By 15 years old he was playing in Southbound with his brother Steve and other great musicians. He played in a few bands through the years, Grain Exchange, and Applejack. AppleJack played 100s of shows, sometimes playing as many as 6 nights a week. He currently still plays with his band, The Matt Creter Band. With all of the years of playing guitar, obviously things break, back in the day there weren’t places you could easily ship your guitar to be fixed, you had to do it yourself. The Creter boys took many trips down the road in Reading to go to Fred’s Music. Fred unfortunately had to close his doors in the beginning of 2017, but for years Matt would ask questions about how to fix his guitars and Fred would give him pointers and advice to get his guitars up and running plus with the help from his Dad and his big brother Steve. After quite a few years of playing and a lot of discussions with his brother, Matt and Steve decided to open Creter Music in Palmyra, as they wanted to settle down and start a family. Their little tiny shop in Annville worked good for the first year but when his current location at 19 W. Market St. in Jonestown was available Matt jumped on the opportunity. He also started at the new location under March, 2017
the name Creter Music & Video. In 1985 videos were very new and exciting. After 6 years in business, they sold the video side of the business to Pop Video and started to just focus on guitars and changed the name to Creter Guitar Shop, which it still is today. Creter Guitar Shop focuses a lot of his business on repairing guitars. Not only does he do the repairs himself, but if it’s something little and quick, and if you’re interested, he’ll even talk you through how to do it yourself, just like Fred did for him years ago at Fred’s Music, it’s just one of his ways of ‘Paying it Forward’. He’s gotten so busy as a guitar repairman that back in October of 2016 he hired his right hand man, Ron Yantz to help him keep up with the repairs. Ron has been coming into Creter Guitar Shop for years as a customer. He would come in for the parts needed to do his own guitar repairs, they would talk about what needed done, and Ron would do the work himself. Eventually after years of talking about it, everything lined up so Ron could join Matt in the shop. While we were there talking they were repairing a guitar together and it definitely looked like a job much easier to do with four hands rather than two. Creter Guitar Shop also has a lesson program with five teachers. Mike Ondrusek, Marq Ortiz and Tim Jesiolowski all teach guitar and bass. Corey Woodcock teaches pedal steel and banjo, and Chance Hurley teaches mandolin and guitar. All of the teachers are prepared to teach a beginner student the basics of playing their instrument, but also can help an advanced student develop their own signature style. Outside of the shop Matt is also the entertainment coordinator for the Fogleman’s Wounded Warrior Music Fest. The mission of this festival is to address, educate, coordinate, and provide aid and relief to offset the burden bore by Veterans and their families that have been wounded in the Service of the United States of America. Last year this one day festival raised $34,000 for the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors. The festival is held on the Fogleman Farmstead at 1536 Old Forge Road in Annville, PA. Since this winter’s weather has largely been cooperative, I have been able to enjoy several noteworthy live music events during recent weeks in our region. Several notable concerts have been among those events, including the first concerts by local native Josh Gallagher since his successful run on NBC Television’s talent search program The Voice last fall. The Cresson native played two sold-out concerts at Altoona’s historic Mishler Theatre in late January. As she introduced Josh and his band during the afternoon concert, Blair County Arts Foundation executive director, Kate Shaffer told the packed house that when tickets went on sale for Josh’s initially-announced evening concert, they sold out in six minutes! The afternoon concert was then added, and it quickly sold out as well. Josh and his Nashville-based band – guitarist Johnny Myers, steel guitarist Cody McKinney, bassist Jason Duggins and drummer Andrew Bone – did excellent work as they performed Josh’s original songs plus some of the material he performed during his run on The Voice. Some of the songs performed included “Stay a Little Longer” (the song that first propelled him onto The Voice), “Make Believe” (written for Josh’s wife Lindsey), “Take It Slow” and “Rest These Calloused Hands.” They also did a few of Josh’s newest songs, including “Bring On the Overtime” and “Turn It Around.” An unintentional highlight of the concert happened during the first set, when the band left the stage and Josh performed solo. He started strumming his version of Kenny Loggins’ “Danny’s Song,” and suddenly came to a stop as some happy commotion erupted toward the front of the audience. The commotion was a marriage proposal, and Josh reported to the audience, “She said yes!” Surprised and elated with this development, Josh forgot the words and had to restart the song. The group’s rendi-

tion of Old Dominion’s “Song for Another Time” also fired up the audience. After the intermission, Josh and group returned to do a few more tunes, finishing with “Lovin’ on You.” When the Mishler audience howled for an encore, Josh and group quickly returned to close out the performance with “Pick Any Small Town,” the original song he performed during The Voice finals. As I watched Josh’s performance, I recalled a scene from The Voice where Josh was coached about the importance of totally feeling the songs he sang. He clearly learned that lesson, as he totally invested himself into each song he sang this day. This has been part of how he connected with viewers (and voters) on The Voice, and it enabled him to totally connect with this Mishler Theatre audience, whether you knew his songs or not. The mood in the room was festive and fun, and the appreciation was mutual between Josh, his band and the crowd. And Josh frequently thanked the audience for their support, and their role in helping him make it to The Voice finals in December. Josh returns to the area for several appearances later this year, including Johnstown’s Thunder in the Valley in June, Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in August and the annual Cambria County Fair in September. The State Theatre in State College has hosted several noteworthy names thus far in the year, and I was able to see two of them in recent weeks. Former Men at Work frontman Colin Hay visited the venue in late January. This was a great show…As I am sure was the case for many of the people in the State Theatre this night, I was more familiar with Colin Hay through his body of work with Men At Work, and was not too familiar with his solo career. Colin delivered an excellent performance as a singer, musician, storyteller and humorist. The opening artist was quite good as well. Boston’s Chris Trapper, a singer and songwriter who often opens for Colin, broke the ice early with the State Theatre audience, humorously sharing his realization that the audience probably saw him as the “obstacle” they would need to deal with before seeing Colin. Chris has some notoriety of his own – he fronted late 1990s alternative band The Push Stars (who were signed to Capitol Records), and has written songs for movies and television. He made the best of his opening role, gaining heartfelt cheers and
Colin Hay laughter from the audience as he performed a short set of his original compositions. Among them was “This Time,” which he wrote for the 2007 film August Rush (which starred Jonathan Rhys Meyers and Robin Williams), his ‘Irish drinking death song’ “Keg on My Coffin,” “The Accident,” “Skin,” and one song that he performed on ukulele – “Away We Go,” during which he humorously teased riffs from Led Zeppelin’s “Stairway to Heaven,” Yes’ “Roundabout” and Deep Purple’s “Smoke on the Water” on his uke. I enjoyed Chris’ finesse on guitar, and his sense of humor. After the intermission between performers, Colin Hay arrived on the State Theatre stage, and hung up his coat on a coat rack on the stage before donning his acoustic guitar and leading off with one of his new songs, the crowd singalong “Tumbling Down.” He immediately connected with the audience, sharing his witty sense of humor as he revealed his beginnings as a Scotsman whose family relocated to Australia at an early age. He shared the inspirations for songs such as “Scattered in the Sand” and “I Just Don’t Think I’ll Ever Get Over You,” the latter from the Garden State movie soundtrack. Acknowledging that he knew many people were there to hear his Men at Work hits, he then introduced “Who Can It Be Now,” performing a somber acoustic take on

Colin continued to mix solo songs with Men at Work hits; he did solo numbers such as “Conversation,” “Beautiful World,” new numbers such as “A Thousand Million Reasons” and “Frozen Fields of Snow” (both from his forthcoming new album “Fierce Mercy”, which comes out this month), honoring an audience request for his song “Maggie,” and performing “Waiting for My Real Life to Begin.” From the Men at Work catalog, Colin also did solo versions of “Down Under” and “Overkill.” He closed his performance with the title track from his 2015 album “Next Year People”, before standing up, putting his coat back on, and saluting and showing adoration for his audience as he exited the stage. Colin’s voice was in very good form, and I enjoyed his blend of storytelling and humor – he was a great all-around performer! Legendary Moody Blues singer/guitarist Justin Hayward then brought his “The Wind of Heaven” tour to the State Theatre last month. Opening the night was renowned British fingerstyle guitarist Mike Dawes. During his brief set, Mike demonstrated amazing skills on his acoustic guitar over several numbers, including his own compositions such as the Celtic-flavored “Somewhere Home,” as well as his versions of Gotye’s “Somebody I Used to Know” and Don Ross’ “Tight Trite Night.” Mike masterfully worked his guitar strings with a touch of showman flare, demonstrating total control and varying his presentation from fast and crazy to gentle and delicate. The audience clearly took notice of his skills; this was one of few times I’ve seen the opening act get a standing ovation! Mike wasn’t done yet; he would soon return to the stage to accompany the headliner, Justin Hayward. Seeing Justin’s performance was a meaningful experience for me, as the Moody Blues was one of the first rock groups I was exposed to as a youngster when my older brother brought albums like “Days of Future Passed” and “Seventh Sojourn” home from college (Penn State). At 70 years young, Justin showed that he still has the voice as he, Julie Ragins on keys and backing vocals, and Mike on electric and acoustic guitars mixed Moody Blues favorites with tunes off Justin’s solo albums, including his latest, “All The Way’. Afternoon,” Justin shared some stories, Moody Blues history and insights on his music. Introducing his song “Western Sky,” Justin talked about growing up in the town of Swindon, west of London. He talked about how he met Mike Pinder and joined the Moody Blues before performing the group’s deep cut “Watching and Waiting” (from the 1969 album “To Our Children’s Children’s Children”). He did solo numbers such as “In Your Blue Eyes,” the tour title song “The Wind of Heaven” (off the new “All The Way” album), “Best Is Yet to Come,” “One Day Someday,” and a song given to him by songwriter Jeff Wayne, “Forever Autumn.” From the Moody Blues’ catalog, Justin also sang lost classics such as “The Morning: Another Morning,” “Lovely to See You” and “Never Comes the Day.” He saved the hits until the set’s homestretch, performing “Your Wildest Dreams,” inviting the audience to help him reach the high notes during the hit “Question,” and closing the main set with the epic “Nights in White Satin.” When the State Theatre audience called for the encore, Justin and his accomplices returned to end the night with “I Know You’re Out There Somewhere.” At presstime, I’m ready to see former Queensryche singer Geoff Tate perform at The State Theatre (Feb. 21, recap next month), and notable shows coming there soon include Melvin Seals & the Jerry Garcia Band on March 19, Talking Heads tribute group Start Making Sense on March 25, reggae artist Matisyahu on March 29, and Grammy winning folk artist Sarah Jarosz on April 19. I wish all Mondays and work weeks could begin with a blast of live electric blues! Baltimore bluesman Reggie Wayne Morris and his band made sure one week started that way when they returned to the area in late January to perform a matinee lunchtime show at Penn State Altoona’s Slep Student Center. Like he did during the group’s visit to the campus last year, Reggie delivered smoking guitar work early and often, backed by the strong rhythm section of bassist Vinny Hunter and drummer Chuck Fuerte. The group did several of Reggie’s original tunes, plus versions of Albert King’s “Born Under a Bad Sign,” the Jimi Hendrix-popularized “Hey Joe” and more. Midway through the performance, Reggie welcomed Penn State Altoona student guest Ikechi Onyenaka to accompany on saxophone, and musical fireworks ensued. One number featured all four musicians indulging in dazzling solo displays. The group also did a fresh reggae angle on Bob Dylan’s “All Along the Watchtower,” before an extended finale number where Reggie fired off a “Star Spangled Banner” guitar solo, Ikechi answered with a sax solo rooted in “My Favorite Things,” and Reggie closed the performance with a guitar shred reprise of the “Star Spangled Banner!” These musicians demonstrated amazing skill and played for keeps, and the audience of students, staffers and members of the public cheered their approval. This show was presented by Penn State Altoona’s Office of Institutional Equity, Diversity, and International Student Services. Chili and soup connoisseurs again descended upon downtown Bedford in late January for the annual Feel the Heat Chili and Soup Challenge, sponsored by Downtown Bedford, Inc. This year’s event expanded from five downtown Bedford locations to seven, where visitors could sample and vote on chilis and soups from a variety of local restaurants and eateries. Each location featured live music; I started my chili and soup sampling sojourn at HeBrews Coffee Company, where Matt Fields performed. From southern Bedford County (near the Maryland border north of Cumberland), Matt played a mixture of pop, blues and country favorites. He gave a robust, upbeat performance as he did numbers such as Van Morrison’s “Brown Eyed Girl,” Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler,” Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth” and many more. I then headed across S. Richard Street to Juiced (a juice bar), where Dunnings Creek – singer/guitarist Mark Diehl and guitarist Duane Sipe – mixed rock favorites from Whitesnake, CCR, John Mellencamp and more. The next stop was Bedford Candies, where Happy Hour – singer/guitarist Tommy Fix and singer Sarah Mellott – performed country and rock numbers. The pair showed strong voices on numbers from Miranda Lambert, Elton John, Luke Bryan, Neil Young and others. From there, I headed to Grin Gallery, where singer/songwriter Jud Bussard sang country hits from Jamey Johnson, Brantley Gilbert, original numbers and more. Down the hill at the new location of Locality Art Gallery, longtime Bedford music favorite Jerry Miller gently strummed his guitar on favorites and free jams while visitors sampled more chilis and soups. (I spent a little extra time there, recovering from an encounter with a chili featuring Carolina Reaper peppers, the hottest in the land!) My
last stop was at Briar Valley Winery, where singer/guitarist Dave Howsare ended his performance with numbers from The Who and Don Henley. (The event ended before I could get to Madelyn Rose Children’s Boutique to see Borrowed Time’s performance.) Combined with sunshine and above normal daytime temperatures, this year’s Feel the Heat Chili and Soup Challenge was a great time! Following Josh Gallagher’s aforementioned afternoon concert at the Mishler Theatre, I decided to keep the day country-themed with a visit to Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge to see area country artist Adam Ernst and his band. Flanked by the supporting cast of guitarist/singer Chris Spaid, bassist Paul Rainey, drummer Eric Wertz, keyboardist Nathan Beatty and new guitar player Darrick Bantly, Adam mixed original songs with modern country covers. The energy was immediate, as dancers hit the dance floor before Adam even sang the first note on his very first song of the night. Adam and his group did a few tunes from his forthcoming new album “Windshield Summer” such as “Dancin’ with Crazy,” as well as songs from his previous CD’s including “County Line” and “Right on the Money.” They also kept the dance floor hopping with favorites from Jason Aldean, Luke Bryan, Lee Brice, Cole Swindell, Kenny Chesney, Brantley Gilbert, Blake Shelton and more. In the homestretch, they blended together Luke Bryan’s “Country Girl” and Big & Rich’s “Save a Horse, Ride a Cowboy.” And when the Four Dees crowd demanded an encore,

the group responded with Billy Currington’s “We Are Tonight” to close out the night. Adam’s voice was in good form, and he and his band radiated enthusiasm the entire night. Early this month, Adam will embark on new music-career related moves; here’s hoping for the best as he continues on his journey! Another recent highlight was last month’s dual-genre
‘throwdown’ at Ebensburg’s Castle Pub. The “Metal vs. Punk” showdown pitted punk-fueled roots rock and rockabilly from Ben Dumm & the East Side Band against scorchedearth heavy metal from Darkness On The Radio. The idea was hatched by both bands’ respective frontmen, Ben Dumm and Darkness’ Jason Straw, partially in celebration of Jason’s birthday. The Castle Pub was near packed when I arrived early into Ben Dumm & the East Side Band’s set. Since the last time I saw this group, Alyse Croll has since (re)joined the group on saxophone (she was with Ben’s previous band incarnation, the Deviants). Ben, Alyse, guitarist Simon Lieb and drummer Anthony Maiocco stormed with a number of Ben’s original tunes spanning his former band The Marauders to present, plus select tunes from Little Richard, Johnny Cash and more. This band delivered it all with fury and velocity, and prompted some sock-hop styled dancing by several ladies in front of the stage. Ben howled with passion, elevating his voice to another level of intensity when he did Little Richard hits like “Good Rockin’ Tonight” and “Long Tall Sally.” Ben Dumm & the East Side Band provided fiery rock’n’roll and continued on page 17...

The Professor continued.... a good time. A seismic musical shift shortly followed on the Castle Pub stage. An ominous prelude led to a cacophony of guitar distortion and riffage, capped with Jason’s stern introduction, “In case you haven’t heard, in case you didn’t know, we are...Darkness On The Radio!” This launched a scalding set of immense Darkness On The Radio originals, including “Wormwood,” “Serpentine,” “Wolves,” “Devil’s Radio,” the set-closer “Judas Take the Wheel” and more. The big surprise for me was when the group launched into their new original “One and the Same,” which recycles the riff from one of my favorite tunes from Jason’s past, his House Of Cain original “Emissary.” Jason, guitar man Jay Snyder, bassist Greg Hatch and drummer Jason Kirchner maintained the ferocity and intensity for the entire set, and kept the fans on the dance floor riveted. Darkness On The Radio escalated the intensity as they approached the end, with instruments and distortion hitting maximum force, and the crowd hanging on for dear life. As for who won the throwdown, the answer would be the Castle Pub crowd, who experienced all-out performances from both bands. And both bands won new fans this night as well. Based on its success, more dual and multi-genre shows at the Castle Pub are likely.
Pavlic, guitarist Jarrett Bickel, bassist Kelly Montgomery, saxophonist Alec Zander Redd and drummer Rob Bonsell introduced upbeat original jam exercises, as well as versions of Phish’s “Birds of a Feather,” Little Feat’s “Spanish Moon,” the Beatles’ “Come Together,” Velvet Underground’s “Rock and Roll,” the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street” and more. Brian and Alec generated expansive solos on their respective instruments, while Rob, Kelly and Jarrett kept their grooves punchy and steady. No Man’s Band’s infectious grooves stirred up frequent dance floor activity. This group continues to develop their arsenal of original numbers; watch for No Man’s Band as they spread their jams across the region. “If you think Altoona’s punk scene is dead, you must be living under a rock!” was the proclamation by X’s For Eyes guitarist and singer Tim Mort as his group capped a well-attended punk rock triple-bill at McGarvey’s in late January. Work duties prevented me from seeing the first band of the night, The Snips, but I arrived in time to see the last two songs by the second band, The Flannels, as they fired up a near-packed house. X’s For Eyes sounded tight and powerful on their brand of heavy-hitting, high-velocity punk rock. Tim, frontman/gui-

Gun Metal Gray I finally caught my first look at Harrisburg-based rockers Gun Metal Gray when they visited The Arena in State College last month. This band was strong, mixing original numbers with hard rock and metal favorites spanning the 1980s to now. Lead singer Dave Damone showed a strong voice and stage presence, guitarist Christian Koch sliced and diced with clean, precise solos and leads, and the rhythm battery of bassist Ed Allison and drummer Jeff Stumpf brought the rumble and thunder to power it all along. Gun Metal Gray did tunes from their two EP’s, “Salvation” and “Island of the Damned” – including “Salvation,” “We Are “One,” “Chains That Bind” and more. They also fired up the crowd with tunes from Dio, Sixx AM, Ratt, Autograph, Motorhead, Foo Fighters, Judas Priest, Rage Against the Machine, Pantera, and for the night’s finale, the storming blend of Metallica’s “Master of Puppets” and “Enter Sandman.” Gun Metal Gray returns to the Arena on March 24 (for The Arena’s Battle of the Bands). Although the co-pilots have changed, the Flight 19 “Party Plane” continues to fly high, evidenced by their performance last month at Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge. In the wake of founding member, guitarist and singer John McKelvey’s retirement from the band’s electric edition in November, Rogan Allen moves from playing bass to lead guitar, while former bassist Mark Triforo rejoins Flight 19 to play bass and sing. Before a packed house, the updated “Party Plane” flight crew generated the dance floor party with a blend of rock, pop, funk, country and dance favorites. Rogan, Mark, lead singer Brian Thomas and keyboardist Phil Steele split singing duties this night, while Paul Caracciolo’s drumbeats powered the party. Some of Flight 19’s highlights this night included an INXS medley that stretched into an ‘80s pop/dance medley, a Rogan guitar solo that evolved into a fiery version of Steve Wonder’s “Superstition,” and a freewheeling 1970s/80s funk and dance medley in the night’s waning minutes that fired up the Dees’ dance floor during the home stretch. Flight 19 shows no signs of slowing down. After parting ways with singer/guitarist Rue Moyer late last year, the former Electrify the Farm has transformed into a new incarnation called No Man’s Band, who I saw early last month at McGarvey’s. I arrived too late this night to see show openers Habatat, but eyewitness accounts reported that their performance was strong. No Man’s Band fired up a funk and jam-rock party, mixing original compositions with their takes on classic rock and jam favorites. Singer/guitarist Brian

Toward set’s end, they broke out a punk-fueled take on the Police’s “Message in a Bottle,” and added more songs at the end of the night when the crowd demanded encores. Emphasizing the vibrancy of the Altoona punk scene, all three of these bands return to McGarvey’s on March 11 as part of a special seven-band show, the “Who Says It’s Dead” Punk Fest. And I caught up with two-thirds of popular area acoustic trio Born and the Beanstalk in late January at Altoona’s Family Pizza & Pub. Dubbed Ed’n’Born, percussionist Ed Hofer and singer/guitarist Sean Osborn were joined by guest Rue Moyer on electric guitar this night. In front of a nice-sized early Sunday evening crowd of diners and music fans, the three musicians blended a tasty variety of classic rock and pop numbers, plus a few of Sean’s original songs. The trio performed numbers from Lynyrd Skynyrd, Pearl Jam, Imagine Dragons, Blind Melon, Black Crowes and more. Highlights included a fusion of the Beatles’ “Dear Prudence” with Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home,” and a take on Hall & Oates’ “Maneater.” NEWS & NOTES: After a year’s absence, the annual Pittsburgh Blues Festival is returning later this year under a slightly different name; it is being re-christened the Pittsburgh Blues and Roots Festival, and will take place on July 22 and 23 at the Syria Shrine Center in Harmar near Pittsburgh. Drummer Jamie Kmett has parted ways with Altoona-based heavy metal rockers Naildriver, citing career reasons. Songwriters Doug Forshey and Chris Strait have collaborated and issued a new EP, called “Tied to the Tracks”. The area music scene suffered the loss of a young talent last month with the unexpected passing of singer Nicole Knepp-Lytle at age 30, condolences to family and friends. NEXT TO NONE – “A LIGHT IN THE DARK” (InsideOut/ Century Media) Next to None’s story began in 2013, as four teenagers from the Lehigh Valley joined forces to create a band. One of those teenagers, drummer Max Portnoy, is the son of Mike Portnoy, who achieved fame as the drummer for both Dream Theater and Avenged Sevenfold. The elder Portnoy produced “A Light in the Dark”, Next to None’s debut album with Century Media Records, and the Dream Theater influence is clearly felt over the disc’s nine tracks. The sound is heavy, aggressive and progressive-geared metal music that incorporates elements of thrash and hardcore. The younger Portnoy demonstrates intricate drum rolls and rudiments, along with fast-firing, pounding beats. Ryland Holland (since replaced by Derrick Schneider) supplies snarling guitar chords, Kris Rank levies sinister-sounding bass lines, and Thomas Cuce sings, snarls and plays keys. “A Light in the Dark” mixes several lengthy epics with more concise heavy assaults. Clocking in at nearly ten minutes, the disc-opener, “The Edge of Sanity,” provides reminders of Dream Theater with its technical-ecstasy time signatures, tempo shifts and side journeys – including a mid-song break that incorporates sound clips of Pac-Man, chocoholic rants, train horns and more. Also stretching nearly ten minutes, “Control” allows all four band members to show their collective musicality and individual instrumental chops. Meanwhile, “You Are Not Me” throttles with aggressive power-metal fury, while “Runaway” pairs similar aggression with a clever song hook payoff. Next to None shows a milder, shadowy side with the piano-toned ballad “A Lonely Walk” (with guests Neal Morse and Nyke Van Wyk on mellotron and violin respectively) and the brooding “Legacy.” Also interesting is the half-spoken, half-snarled and angst-ridden assault “Social Anxiety.” As already established, the disc’s big highlight is the tightness and instrumental skills demonstrated by this teenage corps; and although the younger Portnoy’s drum exploits get slight prominence in the mix, all four of these young musicians show incredible skills and adventurism. Their vocals and lyrics more obviously reflect their youth and restlessness. The production enables Next to None to sound raw, heavy and full. Next to None’s “A Light in the Dark” is a good start, and should prompt listeners to imagine just how good this young group may become as they further hone their skills with age. THE CREW OF THE HALF MOON – “BLANKET FORT RADIO” (no label) Since the 2013 release of their first fulllength CD, “Automythography”, The Crew Of the Half Moon has expanded from a two-person folk entity into a three-piece indie folk-rock group, as percussionist Claire Horvath joins singers/guitarists Dan Oatman and Katie Rhodes. On their second full-length effort, “Blanket Fort Radio”, The Johnstown-based trio displays an edgier, more experimental angle to their music over the album’s nine tracks. The Crew of the Half Moon explores various sonic textures, from darker and ethereal terrain to harder-rocking salvos and a multitude of flavors in between. They evoke moods ranging from melancholy to hopeful as they convey observational words about life experiences and coming of age. This Crew grabs listener attention from the offset with the cryptic album-opener “U-235,” which establishes tension and mystique through an eerie arrangement, setting the tone for Katie’s introspective words. Similar melancholy mood swings inform “Wasteland,” the bouncing “Fortunes” and the reflective album closer “Nineteen.” Also intriguing is the expansive “Stark Lost Lovers,” which evolves from a tranquil grunge-informed beginning into an unpredictable, multi-chord, multi-tempo rocker. Dan contemplates reality in the hard-rocking “Bumblebird and Hummingbee,” the
group uses mandolin to set an Americana flavor on the Katie-led “Luxury,” and they capture a retro 1960’s Jefferson Airplane/ Mamas & Papas pop flavor on dreamy “Cemetery Cops.” The performances are focused and sincere, and Katie’s stern-yetsubdued croon sells the serious tones of much of the song material. Producer and engineer Jon Beard helped the group bring their visions of these songs to fruition, and the sound is crisp and full. The Crew of the Half Moon’s constant shifting of musical terrain – and their mostly seamless transitions to accomplish those shifts – helps make “Blanket Fort Radio”, a compelling listen from start to end. This album further reveals the inventive persona of this trio, and shows a group that is not afraid to indulge their creativity and take chances. REGGIE WAYNE MORRIS – “DON’T BRING ME DAYLIGHT” (Blue Jay Sound) A Virginia native now based in Baltimore, Reggie Wayne Morris has performed his brand of electric blues throughout the Northeast and internationally, and has released three albums to date. His latest, “Don’t Bring Me Daylight”, presents Morris’ smooth mixture of electric blues and soul over 11 tracks. Citing B.B. King and Jimi Hendrix as primary influences, Morris proudly exhibits touches of both in his own performance style, from his soulful and sassy croon to his fluid and tasteful guitar work throughout the album. Several musicians help him along the way, including his live band cohorts Chuck Fuerte on drums and Harrisburg’s Vinny Hunter on bass, along with drummer Ezell Jones, bass players Pete Kanaras, Chris Sellman and Ray Tilkens, and keyboardists Mark Stevens and Bob Borderman. Contrary to the popular misconception about the genre, Morris’ blues are far from depressing, as the mood of “Don’t Bring Me Daylight” is delightfully upbeat, with Morris mostly musing about his ups and downs with the opposite sex. He references his upbringing with the proud and punchy disc-opener “Son of a Blues Fan,” which sets the table for the rest of his bluesy offerings. He recalls a devious dame on the 12 bar blues of “Used to Have a Woman,” disses another love interest’s spending habits on a version of Ceophus Palmer’s “Sign My Check,” and suspects two-timing on “Too Many Cooks.” Morris concedes his own mischief on the rolling piano blues of “Another Can of Worms”, and basks in amorous glory on the soulful “Meet Me” and the lustful “Ooooo Weeee.” His muse is more downtrodden as he laments lost loves on “Ball & Chain” and “She’s Gone.” Morris closes the album with a reggae flavor and a message of hope on “God Loves You.” Morris and his hired hands bring these songs to life with smooth, tasteful performances that serve each number. Morris delivers his words with confidence, sass and a touch of wit, and he makes his guitar sing with zeal. Produced by Morris and Gerald Robinson, the album sounds full, focused and balanced. For connoisseurs of straightforward electric blues and soul, Reggie Wayne Morris’ “Don’t Bring Me Daylight” is a strong and proud set well worth checking out. THE WHATLEYS – “AMERICAN PARTY” (no label) Since 2008, State College foursome The Whatleys have brought punk rock fury to Central PA stages and beyond. After several initial EP’s, the group has unveiled their full-length album, “American Party”. Singer/bassist Eddie Fraud, singer/guitarist Hiro, guitarist TJ Fadehawk and drummer JLaw crank out unapologetic, classic-flavored punk rock spit and vinegar over the disc’s dozen tracks, with a few surprise twists and some witty humor thrown into the mix. The Whatleys never take themselves too seriously, so their lyrical terrain touches on the glories of punk rock, drinking, concert incidents, more drinking, and other related misadventures. On the disc’s opening track, “Balloon Drops (Over Confetti Falls),” the group pledges allegiance to their punk rock music and lifestyle, conceding that it won’t make them rich, but it keeps them sane. The group muses about coming of age on “Separate,” which shows a slight Social Distortion grunginess, and they celebrate graduating to the drinking lifestyle on the disc closer “Straight Edge Is Fun (Until You’re 21).” The Whatleys show a knack for simple, infectious continued on page 20...

Michael E. Morris, 54, passed away peacefully on Sunday, February 19, 2017 surrounded by his loving family at home in Elizabethtown. Born Sunday, September 16, 1962 in Hershey, he was the son of the late Carl and Katherine (Graby) Morris. He is survived by two children: Anastasia P. Morris of Elizabethtown and Michael P. Morris, of Orlando, FL. Also surviving are three brothers: Curt, Carl and Robert Morris. He was preceded in death by a brother, Charles Morris. A private graveside service will be held at the convenience of the family in Grandview Memorial Park, Annville. Arrangements have been entrusted with the Rothermel-Finkenbinder Funeral Home & Crematory, Inc., 25 West Pine Street, Palmyra, PA 17078, 717-838-9211. Mike started playing keyboards when he was just 5 years old. He performed with The Morris Bros and family throughout the 70s and The Morris Bros thru the 80s and 90s. His bands also include Maskeraid, Jack ,Tukurpa, Rockville and most recently The Wing Nutz. He has written and recorded a 9 song all original CD with Maskeraid. He also cowrote the song “Lost Heroes” with his brother Bob of Smokin Gunnz as well as others songs that they had written together. He was an all around great guy who’d give his all anytime you needed help. The world will be a much sadder place without him here… like the song says, “one day when I move on I hope I get to see all of my lost heroes singing together in harmony…”

1972 Al Alberts Showcase PA Musician Reviews continued.... song hooks throughout the album, especially on the nuclear-fueled romance ode “Bionic Eyes,” and they display a surfrock direction on the band misadventure story “Broke Down (in Murdertown).” But speed and velocity are the norm here; JLaw’s hyperspeed stickwork becomes the group’s most valuable weapon on this album, propelling short and sweet rants like “Sick,” “Go For Broke,” “13 Black” and the humorous late night eatery misadventure recap “Wig Out at Denny’s,” complete with a feverish drum solo. The Whatleys go for broke on each track, and execute these numbers with exuberance and reckless abandon. Their instrumental work is solid, and while they bark and rant in the best punk rock tradition, they also harmonize well. Recorded by Rik Golden at Golden Studios in Ebensburg, “American Party” sounds full and balanced, but leaves the appropriate amount of jagged edges to enable The Whatleys to deliver their full bite. “American Party” is a punk rock party, and provides a fast, furious and fun listen. NICOLE KNEPP-LYTLE Nicole Knepp-Lytle passed away unexpectedly on Monday, February 13. She was 30. Nicole enjoyed singing, and while in her teens competed in the annual Crazy Fest Amateur Youth Talent Show. She later became the lead singer for area rock group Issues for a brief period, and she once auditioned for NBC Television’s The Voice. She is survived by her husband, two sisters and several pets. Our heartfelt condolences go out to Nicole’s surviving family and friends. 19
