ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll
We have been busy at the office with attending MMC 22 and still getting our publications to the printer. We thoroughly enjoyed the Millennium Music Conference and the Park Inn and Bravo 11 was a great facility to have it in. Plenty of rooms and the service and food were great. The bands that the John Harris Group presented were amazing and it is so cool to hang out with people who love music all weekend long. The hardest part of the weekend was trying to see and hear as many of the bands as possible, but now it’s done and the John Harris Group has moved on to finish the details of the Cape May Singer/Songwriter event at the end of March. Also coming up in March is the Lancaster Roots & Blues which is another event that Russ Ruoff has been coordinating since he ran blues events at the Chameleon when he owned that. club. Rachel Rocks & Eric Hoffman will be attending that event but this time Rachel gets to go to enjoy the show. The talent that Rich has lined up is simply amazing and Rachel went last year and she said the VIP tickets are worth every penny for they truly treat the Vip’s special and make you feel like a VIP. There is music happening throughout the state and there
is always something to do here in wonderful PA. Just check out the schedules on this page alone. All the bands placing their ads in this issue are seasoned and talented musicians whose desire is to perform the music that they are passionate about and to entertain all of you who come out in support of LIVE music. THANK YOU to all of you who do come out to the live music events instead of staying home, it is truly appreciated by all those that have “the itch” to share their talents. An event coming up in April 13th thru the 15th is the “Artisan Guitar Show” having at the Best Western Premiere in Harrisburg. There will be Master classes on making instruments and a number of great concert events.
including Livingston Taylor, Dick Boak, Will Ackerman, John Monteleone. Meet Master Guitar Makers and there will be guitar maker vendors and a whole array of events. Go to www.Artisanguitarshow.com for all the details and to get your tickets. This issue is full of reviews of the MMC and some of the happenings. This month Rachel wrote about her expericnes but Jim Price (The Professor) will share his experiences next month as time did not allow him to cover it adequatley like he likes to do. A busy busy month ahead. Be safe out there and share the LOVE. We all need kindness. I LOVE YOU WHITEY!!

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
Time to take a breath and get typing!! I’ll be writing about the MMC in this issue. Jim Price will be writing about all of his coverage of the MMC in the April Issue. I’m always behind, so my March article isn’t already done like it should be. I’m the Princess of Procrastination, and my Mom is the Queen.. haha! I only went to see one band before the MMC came to town and I’m glad I did, I knew I would have plenty to type about. This article will just cover the evening showcases, there will be another article just about our Trade Show Acoustic Stage, I’m not sure where, but just flip through the pages, you’ll find it! I caught my first bands of the month while I was out delivering the last issue of the magazine. I stopped by Bube’s Brewery and Hit or Miss was on the stage opening for Gun Metal Gray. Hit or Miss is a young band that a room full of fans dancing
and singing along. They were a great band to get the party started. It’s been a very long time since I saw Gun Metal Gray. It was a a very nice treat to cross paths with them again. Bube’s Brewery has a very small stage area, but Gun Metal Gray made the most of it. The room was so packed that there was even some body surfing going on! As usual Gun Metal Gray didn’t disappoint and if I wasn’t so exhausted I would’ve stayed for the whole show. I pity the people of Mt. Joy because when I went outside to leave it sounded just like I was still inside, their walls must be paper thin! The next night I headed over to Blarney’s for Stonewood. I haven’t seen these guys since they were on our cover a few months ago. It’s so cool that Blarney’s now does country nights. Stonewood had a great crowd and everyone was enjoying their song choices. They mostly play country music, but they also play rock songs throughout their sets too. The good mix of music keeps everyone interested in their music all night long. They had Roy Barrett filling in on guitar and vocals when I saw them. He did a great job filling in with limited notice. Shannon sent more time on the dance floor then she did on the stage. She loves interacting with her fans, and the fans obviously love dancing along with her too!

The MMC started this year after a full day at work, and then off to the airport to pick up my friends, and long time volunteers of the MMC, CK, Heather, and Ivan. CK is the first smiling face you see at the Registration Table, Heather is the queen of Mentoring, she knows the right people to meet with, and then Ivan, he likes thinking he’s the Head of Security, but he’s probably one of the reasons why we need security at the MMC! Ha! Just kiddin’ Ivan, you know I love you!! Every year for the last 10 years we’ve had a blast checking out the showcases together and partying well into the night, and very early morning. We are also the suppliers of something special every year, the last few years the special treat was ‘Vodka Bears’.. We all try to make sure everyone has a great time, and in the process we are always finding amazing friends! Thank God for social media because people come from near and far and it’s nice to be able to keep an eye on everyone throughout the year. This year we had our friends from Canada, Autopilot, back again, and we made some new great friends from Scotland, Single By Sunday, and then of course the boys from Epoch Failure were back, and I met some other super cool guys with awesome girlfriends, Silver Screen, from right here in Johnstown. There is no possible way to mention every band I met and hung out with during the MMC, but just know that I had a blast with all of you! There obviously wouldn’t be a MMC without all of the bands that are willing to travel here from near and far, and John Harris who plans and organizes it all! I’m truly blessed to have this great event in my own backyard! The MMC officially started Thursday night with the Kick-Off Party on the Bud Light stage at Bravo 11. Due to some venues that closed, John was scrambling last minute to find new venues, and then with the help of Chad Kintz, they found a way to put 3 stages at Bravo 11. They put one out on the “deck stage” sponsored by Filson Water, then they resurrected the old WS Hardware Bar stage for the “Bud Light” stage, and then Park Inn set up a stage downstairs in the “Ballroom”. (For the locals: Bravo 11 is the new name of Blarney’s, WS Hardware Bar, Wanda’s, etc, I personally think a good name for it should be ‘Used to Bes’) For the Kick-Off party the only open stage was the Bud Light stage. It was perfect because I had my first taste off the Bravo 11 menu. All the food I had all weekend was absolutely delicious: I had burgers, quesadillas, chicken tenders, flatbread pizza, reg fries, pickle fries, etc.. most of it was served to me by Allison, that girl busted her butt all weekend I swear she worked from 11am to 2am! She was everywhere! There were also plenty of beverages, if you can find the bartender Chris, he makes a special purple drink that I highly suggest. Chris was also always there and always had a smile on his face. Good service is what makes or breaks a lot of restaurants/bars, and Bravo 11 definitely found some good ones! Now on to the music. The first act of the MMC were Almond&Olive from Chicago. They are only a two-piece band with one heck of a distinctive Americana sound. Their whole set up is quite interesting. They are both awesome and super cool vocalists that share one mic. Natalie Alms (Almond) sings her heart out while playing different hand-held percussion instruments and interjecting with some amazing harmonica licks too! Ollie Davidson (Olive) sings with his own distinctive voice and killer harmonies while continued on page 9..

Single by Sunday at The Champs playing the guitar and using a kick drum with his heel. They are definitely a two person band! I was so excited listening to their set because with each song I was even more impressed, and I knew it was just a little taste of how amazing the entire weekend’s music was going to be! After their set I basically begged them to stop by our Open Mic stage the next day, I’m thrilled to say they stopped by both days!! They gave us all just enough of taste, just one little song, called “Mulberry Hill” to make us wanting more! Find them on “all the socials” as Ollie likes to say.
Animal Sun, from Charlottesville, VA as part of the Kick-Off they played as a duo, but I found out later in the MMC they definitely have a full rockin’ band! I was able to catch their acoustic music again when they stopped by our Acoustic Stage. Then on Saturday night I saw the full band rocking out on the Bud Light stage. They all sing great harmonies and have just the right amount of ripping guitar solos to get your hooked. For an Alternative band they have very clear and distinct lyrics. I’m still singing the opening of their song “Girl in Blue” in my head. The next band I was super stoked to see on the opening bill, Autopilot from Saskatoon, Canada. I met these guys last year at the MMC and had just as much fun if not even more fun with them again this year. Nothing involved an Uber, but thanks to Jose for holding me up on Saturday night, I don’t think I would’ve made it without him. I did miss Colton this year, but by Saturday we finally convinced their new bass player, Jordan to come out and party with us, and he was a lot of fun too. Autopilot has had one heck of a year touring all over the US and Canada. I should’ve asked them how many tour stops they had this past year, their last stop before the MMC was Louisville, KY. Autopilot definitely has a unique sound, you can’t really nail down any one genre, except original. Marlin uses so many crazy effects with his guitar, he even uses a violin bow for some of the sounds he creates. If you want some one of a kind,
groovy music give Autopilot a listen, and keep an eye out because chances are they will be passing through your town soon! After Autopilot the crazy colored hair boys, Single By Sunday, took the stage. I had a feeling they were going to be good after I checked out their Facebook page before the MMC and I saw they had over 25K likes, but I didn’t think they were going to be THAT good! They definitely had us all hooked after just one little showcase! Not only are they great musicians with an insane stage presence, they also have an amazing off stage presence as well. They are super cool guys that definitely just want to play music! According to Ivan they get all kinds of air time in Ireland, even way out on the oil rig where he works. When they started playing he couldn’t believe he was singing along because he already knew their song! They are all a bunch of Romeo’s just like their song sings, and there are plenty of Juliette’s trying to meet them. They are the perfect age to be out there touring and conquering the world. While they were across the pond they were leaving the US and heading to Canada for a few more stops on their North American tour! I can’t wait to keep an eye on these guys this year and see where their music takes them. They have a great YouTube channel with weekly episodes that I know I’ll be hooked to! Throughout the weekend I saw these guys three different times and they put on one heck of a show every time! They are another example that continued on page 10...

OUT & ABOUT continued
John Harris does his homework, they kicked off the MMC and they closed it out at Midnight Saturday back on the Bud Light stage to a packed room! The last band of the night definitely didn’t disappoint. The only Pennsylvania band on the bill, Johnstown’s very own, Silver Screen! They were by far the hardest band on the bill, a hashtag on their Soundcloud page is #MakeAmericaGrungeAgain. I knew as soon as I heard them, my son Zack would love them and he does! He’s already following them on Soundcloud and rocking to their music. They win the prize for the most distinct item in the Buzz Bag this year. They had a postcard with their info and attached to it was a little pack of 5 Silver pipe Screens. They were also handing out matchbooks with their name on it too. They rocked the kick-off party so hard they blew a fuse!! Instead of freaking out they just let Austin loose on the drums to keep everyone entertained. After Ritt got the sound up and running again they came right back up and finished the night off. They even played a longer set because they were able to throw in a few covers to fill up the night with good times and rock and roll. I was very impressed to hear the softer side of Stephen, their lead singer, when him and Ben stopped by our acoustic stage and sang us a couple of songs. Very impressed and proud of this PA band. Hopefully they work their way closer to Harrisburg so our paths cross again soon! After a full day of craziness on the trade show floor and 20 different performers tantalizing my ear drums all day, it was time to get off and running to night #2 of the Showcases. Since Single By Sunday traveled all the way from Scotland we couldn’t help but decided to head to The Champ to see their Friday night set. Lucky for us when we first got there, Girl Pow-R, from Ontario, Canada was still on the stage. Girl-Pow-R is obviously and all girl band, but when I say girls, I mean that none of them were more than 15 years old! Not only did they all sing beautifully, but they played different instruments too. They had keys, a violin, guitar, and 2 different sized ukuleles. They played a few very popular covers, but then they also played their original “Krisi”. It was awesome to see them on our acoustic stage the next day too. They unfortunately didn’t bring their instruments, but they did bring their dance moves! Kudos to their Moms and Dads for going on this journey with them and letting them share their music with the world, and it’s a great philosophy for girls to realize that they too have plenty of power!! Single By Sunday didn’t have the place packed, but they didn’t let it stop them from performing their hearts out! With even more room to dance around and have a good time, these guys were all over the place! They had the mosh pit moving which isn’t hard to do at The Champ, moshing is something I’ll never quite understand, but Single By Sunday definitely appreciated the energy of the mosh pit and the response to their music. Our next stop we crossed our fingers and zoomed across the bridge to catch the tail end of Autopilot’s set at Midtown Tavern. I threw my carload out the door so they could hear even more songs, and I circled like a vulture finding a parking spot. Luckily Mom stayed with me so I didn’t have to walk the whole back to Midtown Tavern alone. Luckily we got there in time for a few Autopilot songs. The next band, we thought we’d stick around for a couple of songs before we ran out to finish the night off back at the hotel, exhaustion was kicking in and it wasn’t easy, but we’re glad we stuck around for Featherburn. It’s not too often you see a front man with an accordian, but Milo definitely knew how to rock out on that thing! They have to win the prize for the biggest surprise of this conference, and they are from right here in Lancaster! It’s depressing when you hear such an amazing band but they aren’t promoting themselves. Their songwriting is unbelievable and so catchy! Then there were also all of Milo’s outfit changes, and storytelling from right there at the microphone. Their one song was about Bicycle City, before it started he stripped down to his biking shorts and shirt, put on his bike helmet with a little flashing light, and then even handed out 2 pieces of a metal bike to each person and then had them “play along” during the song. Their music and antics can’t help but make you smile! After Featherburn we headed back to Bravo 11 for the tail end of the night. We got there in time to hear Silver Screen again for a few songs, and then I bopped over to the Filson Water stage for Small Town Titans. It’s been a long time since I heard this local favorite! They’ve been doing huge and exciting things lately, it’s awesome to watch them grow in the music continued on page 11...

industry. They are always coming up with amazing ways to promote themselves. This year in the buzz bag they included cards with not only their schedule and websites, but also a coupon for merch at their shows! After another full conference day with 27 performers on our acoustic stage I was able to see Small Town Titans perform again on the Bud Light Stage. They were going to play a calmer acoustic set, but it’s hard to slow these guys down, they are on a roll, and it will be awesome to see where their passion takes them. Saturday night we decided just to stay at Bravo 11 and enjoy the three stages and the amazing plethora of music on all of them. I didn’t really stay in one place too long because I didn’t want to miss anything! Crobot was out on the Filson Water stage playing a very scaled down acoustic set with just Brandon and Chris performing. It was cool to see a whole different side to Crobot. Next up on the Bud Light stage were The Foxfires from New York. We met these guys last year jammed on a small stage, where they blew a fuse, so it was nice to see them on a big stage where they could rock the night away! The amount of energy they had pouring off the stage was so contagious! They had us all dancing and going crazy right along with them. Even though they were crazy, it was a controlled craziness. Their harmonies and different melodies are so amazing to listen to. We were able to hear those harmonies up close and personal when they stopped by our acoustic stage Friday and Saturday too. They definitely pick up their instruments and play every chance they get! Then I peaked back into the Filson stage for Black Tie Stereo. Maybe it was their black ties, but their music seemed very flawless, almost like listening to the background music of a commercial on TV. Their songs all have a find mix of a pop funk sound that is unique and helps get your hooked and keep you entertained. I ran back over to the Bud Light stage and saw Animal Sun was back on stage rocking with their full band, and then I headed downstairs to check out 717 Entertainment’s stage and Behind the Grey was on stage. They were definitely taking the word energy to a whole new level. They were all over the stage head banding and rocking out. They were by far the most aggressive band I saw at the MMC. I was impressed to see they took the time to put their banner stands on the stage. Once again there aren’t many bands that display anything with their name!! Again just hang a t-shirt from a mic stand, or write it on a napkin, I don’t care, but when you have so many bands at a conference and the band has such a small amount of time to play and set up, your name is one of the first things you forget to mention, and even if you do mention it, the crowd might not hear you, or might not know how to spell it. If you spell it out for them, it will help you get more fans. Pass out QR codes, do something to make sure people remember you and can find you.. You are paying all of the money to get to a conference, and not getting paid to play, you might as well at least pick up a fan or two! The next band I’ve seen quite a few times in the last few years, but I have to admit, I got goosebumps when I heard them play because I was so impressed with how much they’ve improved since the last time I saw them, and they are Observe the 93rd. Derek’s confidence on stage now is just amazing. When I saw him put down his guitar and come out as far as he could on the stage and sing his heart out was just amazing!! They recently added in an additional guitar player that allows continued on page 20...

SMOKIN GUNNZ — DEEP, FRIED SOUTHERN ROCK N’ ROLL! Article & All photos by Rachel Rocks
Bob Morris
With over 20 years in the band’s history, Smokin’ Gunnz has become a premiere Southern Rock tribute act. Acclaimed for their ability to recreate the sound of some of Southern Rock’s most respected artists, the four members of Smokin’ Gunnz have road tested and honed their sound to a level of perfection that their growing legion of loyal fans have come to love and expect. They’ve undergone quite a few member changes in 20 years, but no matter what happens, the music continues. The one original member of Smokin’ Gunnz is Bob Morris, the lead singer and drummer. I’ll never quite understand how he manages to sing and play drums at the same time, but he does it flawlessly. Mike Brady has been jamming on guitar with Smokin’ Gunnz for 12 years, he also sings back up vocals and on a few songs he sings lead too. It’s hard to believe Rick Marko has been banging on the bass for over 5 years already. He recently even gave up his headless bass, but head or no head, he knows how to keep the rhythm rockin. Zach Beers is the newest member of the band. He’s only been around for 6 months, but that doesn’t mean he doesn’t know how to rock. Zach has put in hours of hard work and lots of
practice so he can fit right in with the rest of them. With being a band for over 20 years they’ve obviously seen plenty of different fads with different music. Smokin’ Gunnz tries to play all of the songs they choose as close to the originals as they can. They not only play the popular songs that everyone knows either, some of their songs are the ‘B’ sides and deeper cuts from popular artists that you usually only hear when you listen to a full album, which is rare with today’s audience. Southern rock fans, (and they do have some hard-core southern rock fans) appreciate that. They still get requests for ‘On The Hunt’, ‘Gimme Back Your Bullets’ and other older tunes. That being said, not everybody has an appreciation for the deeper cuts they play. They keep getting requests for more ‘danceable’ songs, more songs that are better known, and more current songs and Smokin’ Gunnz are able to oblige and continue to increase their song list. Since Zach started, and now that they have younger blood in the band, they’ve been learning some newer songs to reach the younger generation out there supporting live music. When I got to their practice spot to do the interview I was worried I was at the wrong place when I heard them playing Jason Aldean. They’ve recently had a few show at the Winner’s Circle, so they are learning some of the more requested songs to keep their fans happy. They’ve also been learning some of the danceable classic rock songs too. One thing they know for sure is they want to keep playing for 20 more years, and in order to do that they have to change with the times. You

can Music with the addition of their much anticipated original recordings. Mike is the main songwriter in the group, but I’ve been told Rick is contributing to the song writing as well. It’s hard to believe their self-titled CD ‘Smokin Gunnz’ has been out since 2014. Mike has plenty of songs he’s written, it’s just a matter of time til they can get all of the pieces to some new originals together so they can get back in the studio. They’ve played a lot of great shows throughout their careers. One of the highlights every year is Ocean City Bike Week. The crowds down there are just enormous. There are so many people singing along, that their voices actually come through the monitors. They are lucky to be invited to play the Gettysburg Bike Week and the York Bike Week too. Since they are all bikers too, it’s the best
can’t do anything too drastic, especially when you have the vast fan base that they have, but when you add in a few new songs here and there, you can keep the old fans, and get some new fans too! Obviously with a band called Smokin’ Gunnz they are going to be sticking to their southern rock roots, so if you are a big southern rock ran, they are definitely a band you want to follow and party with. Keeping with the grand tradition of the “Great Southern Sound” while planting a foot firmly in the future, the Gunnz have begun to carve out their own place in the long, proud heritage of this unique genre of Ameri-
of both worlds. They also love playing all of the local carnivals and venues that they can. They are lucky to have a great fan base that follows them everywhere. If you want to get Smokin’ Gunnz booked at your venue or private event, you can give Vickie a call at South Sound Productions, 717-832-6154. The guys are very thankful for everyone that helps them make Smokin’ Gunnz what it is today. Vickie has been promoting them every way she possibly can, and booking their shows throughout Pennsylvania and beyond. Greg Hershey is the man behind their sound board. Having consistent sound at every show is so crucial and he helps make every show sound great. Looks are important too and Allen Stern not only does a great job with their lighting, but he also takes pictures and videos at their shows and posts them on their social media. Recently Bob also got his very own drum tech, Rick Grim. Rick has really made things so much easier for Bob and for the whole band. Firefly has been a great sponsor, everyone loves it when the nurse is handing out her “medication” at the shows. Last but not least they are very grateful for all of their fans that have supported them throughout the years by not only coming to their shows, but buying their merch and wearing it with pride! Whether paying homage to the forefathers who blazed a trail before them or creating their own musical offerings, one listen to this group of seasoned professionals will tell you all you need to know about their dedication to their craft. They want to make sure everyone has a great night out on the town, enjoying some deep, fried southern rock n’ roll!

NATIONALS By Eric Hoffman
Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! Last month brought three notable National artists to the mid-state. The Blues Vultures rocked Johnny Joe’s in Mechanicsburg in support of Nothingmen. Frontman, Ronnie 10/10 Younkins is most popular for his work with KIX but also does a tremendous job singing straight rock ‘n’ roll with his project Blues Vultures. The band locates in Maryland where they play most of their shows. Blues Vultures plays Cactus Flats in Frederick, Maryland on March 10th. Harrisburg native Jeffrey Gaines returned home on February 2nd for a record release show of his latest album “Alright.” The event held at HMAC appeared sold-out with the audience standing anywhere possible at Stage On Herr. It was a very special evening consisting of great new songs and shared memories of old Harrisburg. Gaines, who now lives in Philadelphia, has been commuting to Los Angeles where he recorded the album and also held similar record release performances. This album also marks Gaines’ first record in 15 years. J Roddy Walston & The Business also visited Central PA on February 5th to their favorite venue in town The Abbey Bar. The band currently finished a 9-city tour and will begin another 9 cities this month, supporting their latest album “Destroyers of the Soft Life.” Harrisburg has become a well-known place for J Roddy for the past 9 years when they held a free weekly residency for one month at the Abbey in June 2009. J Roddy plays Stage AE in Pittsburgh on March 31. Live Nation and Hershey have begun to announce summer shows at Hersheypark Stadium: 5/25 Journey, Def Leppard - 6/2 Kendrick Lamar - 6/14 Harry Styles - 6/22 Zac Brown Band - 6/30 Stxy, Joan Jett, Tesla - 7/21 Kesha, Macklemore 7/28 Lynyrd Skynyrd - 9/1 Fall Out Boy. And at Giant Center: 6/12 Tim McGraw, Faith Hill - 10/25 Keith Urban NATIONAL NEWS: Ozzy Osbourne announced his “No

More Tours 2” final world tour during a press conference at his Los Angeles home February 6th. The name plays off Ozzy’s 1992 tour, the first time he announced a series of farewell concerts. The world tour begins April 27th and will take Osbourne into the year 2020. The 70-year-old Osbourne insisted he’s not retiring from the music business, only touring, having “missed my family over the years.” “I’ll still be doing gigs and want to continue working on new material” he announced. The band will include longtime guitarist Zakk Wylde, bassist Blasko, drummer Tommy Clufetos and keyboardist Adam Wakeman. The Smashing Pumpkins are reuniting with three of the original four members of the band for their first full tour since 2000. Bassist D’arcy Wretzky still refuses to join the band. The band stated: “James Iha, Jimmy Chamberlin, and William Corgan haven’t played a show with D’arcy Wretzky for over 18 years. But it’s not for a lack of trying. For despite reports, Ms. Wretzky has repeatedly been invited out to play with the group, participate in demo sessions, or at the very least, meet face-toface, and in each and every instance she always deferred.” The Shiny And Oh So Bright Tour will kick off July 12th and visits Baltimore on July 27th and Philadelphia on July 28th. Joan Jett & The Blackhearts are teaming up with Styx for a massive U.S. co-headlining tour. Tesla is also joining the trip as an opener. The outing kicks off May 30th in California and visits Hersheypark Stadium on June 30th. Last year, Styx sold an average of 7,038 tickets per show and Joan Jett & The Blackhearts sold 1,482 tickets when headlining. Judas Priest guitarist Glenn Tipton won’t be joining the band on its massive “Firepower 2018” world tour because his case of Parkinson’s disease is progressing. Tipton stated “I want everyone to know that it’s vital that the Judas Priest tour go ahead and that I am not leaving the band. It’s simply that my role has changed. I don’t rule out the chance to go onstage … when I feel able to blast out some Priest!” However, the progression of the disease and how it affects his performance of the band’s more challenging material led Tipton to decide not to go on this tour. He asked Andy Sneap to fill in for him. Judas Priest commented “We also can’t wait to have Glenn with us at any time, any place on the road.” The “Firepower 2018” tour with Saxon

The tour, in support of Depeche Mode’s 2017 album Spirit, started in March that year and reached No. 6 on Top 100 Worldwide Tours chart. The band grossed $141.1 million, moving 1,565,573 tickets at an average price of $78. Depeche Mode visit Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on June 3rd. Poison announced a spring tour which includes Cheap Trick and Pop Evil. Their “Nothin’ But A Good Time” outing will feature all original members of Poison. Singer Bret Michaels said, “The all original Poison is headlining again this summer. It’s going to be a mega concert and party combined. We will be playing all the hits and bringing high-energy rock and roll good times. I promise this will be awesome.” The last stop of continued on page 14...

Although Spring officially starts later this month, it appears that winter has already started relenting, which has permitted me to see a number of noteworthy live music performances in recent weeks. One highlight for me in the past month was catching my first look at Canadian folk/Americana group The Wailin’ Jennys at State College’s historic State Theatre. Three multi-talented women provide the core of this group: singer and stand-up bassist Heather Masse; guitarist, percussionist and singer Nicky Mehta; and singer, banjo, guitar and accordion player Ruth Moody. Assisting these women this night were Ruth’s brother Richard Moody on viola, and acoustic guitarist Adam Dobres. Together 16 years, The Wailin’ Jennys showcased wondrous vocals and harmonies, as well as tasty, ear-pleasing arrangements on an assortment of original songs and select covers. Their sound combined elements of folk, Celtic, bluegrass, country and rock as they performed songs from their five CD’s, including their latest album of cover songs, Fifteen. Although each of their songs this night qualified as a highlight, standouts for me included their intertwining voices on the a cappella “These Blues” and Dolly Parton’s “Light of a Clear Blue Morning,” Heather’s jazz-rooted “Cherry Blossom Love,” the audience sing-along “Oh Sweet Peace,” and – as this show happened the day after the Parkland school shooting in Florida – the solemn show-closer “One Voice.” The Wailin’ Jennys also performed renditions of Emmy Lou Harris’ “Deeper Well” and “Boulder to Birmingham,” Warren Zevon’s “Keep Me in Your Heart,” Tom Petty’s “Wildflowers” and the traditional “Old Churchyard.” During their current tour, The Wailin’ Jennys have teamed with the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) – this night, the group invited audience members to make donations to NAMI during intermission. Everybody who donated any amount received a raffle ticket to win The Wailin’ Jennys’ entire five-album CD catalog and a T-shirt. (I’m now the proud owner of those items, as my ticket was drawn!) A popular adage suggests that a man’s worth is not measured by his possessions, but by the number of friends he has, and friends who remember him when he’s gone. The late Tom Petty won the hearts of many with his music, and a wallto-wall crowd packed McGarvey’s in late January for a special “Petty Crime” tribute featuring a cast of area musicians. The assembled cast of singers Brian Elliott, Todd McKeone and Aislinn Feathers, guitarist/mandolinist Mike Wertz, guitarist/ keyboardist Jarrett Bickel, bassist Hunter Karns and drummer Sam Thurau performed two sets of pure Petty, touching on many of his best-known numbers and a few deep cuts. After a strong opening set by Ed N’Born, the Petty Crime cast cut loose with “You Wreck Me” to open their first set, and did Petty favorites such as “Running Down a Dream,” “The Waiting,” “You continued on page 15..

PROFESSOR continued Don’t Know How It Feels” and “Refugee.” Aislinn then sang the Stevie Nicks lead on “Stop Draggin’ My Heart Around,” before the group dug out a few Petty deep cuts such as “Honey Bee,” “The Apartment Song” and “Lover of the Bayou.” Next was “Don’t Do Me Like That,” before Ed N’Born’s Sean Osborn joined in on acoustic guitar for the set-ending edition of “Mary Jane’s Last Dance.” The crowd remained festive as the cast launched into their second set with “I Need to Know,” Petty hits and favorites filled out the duration: “I Won’t Back Down,” “Breakdown,” “Handle with Care,” “Into the Great Wide Open,” “Learning to Fly,” “Wildflowers,” “Yer So Bad,” “Even the Losers,” “It’s Good to Be King,” “American Girl,” and – to end the night – “Free Fallin.’” The performance was strong and enthusiastic from start to end, and it was clear that this assembled cast did their homework and had these songs down before hitting the stage. The mood was happy throughout; this celebration of Tom Petty and his body of work made for a memorable night. I saw a number of shows at McGarvey’s in the past several weeks…Another recent highlight there was a night of blues headlined by all-female New York-based blues quintet Jane Lee Hooker. This was an excellent night of blues and blues rock, with the Rogan Allen Project kicking things off early. Flanked by Bill Smith on bass, Nathan Beatty on keys and trumpet, and Randy Servello behind the drum kit, Rogan sang and jammed guitar on a mix of original tunes and select blues-rooted covers. One of Rogan’s originals was the catchy “Warm Beer and Cold Women,” and he and his bandmates finished with Elvin Bishop’s “Fooled Around and Fell in Love.” Felix & the Hurricanes followed with their strong set of original tunes and covers. Namesake, singer and guitar meister Felix Kos, singer and bassist Jeff Clapper and drummer Bob Watters served up a few original songs I had not heard in a while, such as “Free” and “I Just Had to Play the Blues,” as well as favorites like “Walking a Straight Line,” “Beale Street,” “Keep On Rockin’” and more. Guest Steve Oswalt hopped onto the stage to belt out voice on “It’s All Over Now,” and the Hurricanes also did numbers from the Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Robben Ford, and the lid-slamming finisher, Focus’ “Hocus Pocus.” Jane Lee Hooker then came, saw and conquered the Altoona audience with their fiery set of blues and blues-rock, serving up original songs from their two CD’s and a select remake or two. These five women brought it all, from fast-firing boogie and blues-driven rockers to slow heart-ripping blues tunes. Their base sound tapped Bonnie Raitt and the Rolling Stones influences especially, but they also opened with Muddy Waters’ “Hoochie Coochie Man” and did a fiery version of Bobby Bland’s “Turn On Your Love Light” (which they cover on their latest album, Spiritus). Singer and keyboardist Dana “Danger” Athens displayed a high-flying, powerful voice, passion and all-out energy from start to end; guitarists Tracy Hightop and Tina “T-Bone” Gorin demonstrated chunky riffs, slick solos and even some harmony leads, and bassist Mary Zadroga and drummer Melissa Houston set the strong rhythms and foundation behind it all. Jane Lee Hooker had the house howling and cheering from the get-go, and left much of the crowd picking their jaws up off the floor by show’s end. McGarvey’s hosted the fast-firing triple-bill of Dragline, The Flannels and The Filthy Lowdown in late January. Alle-Kiski Valley trio Dragline brought full fury to the stage to lead off the night, performing unapologetic, blistering hard rock and roll. Singer/guitarist Jimmy, bassist/singer Mike and drummer Jay mixed elements of rebel country, southern rock and rockabilly into their high-powered, Motorhead-rooted sound. Some of their highlights included originals like “Mommy’s Got Bacon, Daddy’s Got Beans,” “Whiskey and the Devil,” “Rock and Roll Machine,” and their fiery set-ending cover of David Allan Coe’s “Tennessee Whiskey.” The Flannels then fired off their set of short, sweet, blistering, melody-rooted punk rock numbers. Their tunes were fast and furious, but tight and tuneful – singer John Brehm, guitarists James McNulty and Mike Lanzendorfer, bassist Chet Lafferty and drummer Josh Ryan drilled tunes such as “My Way,” “Song About You,” “Be There for Me,” “Feet So Cold” and their established closer, “10-28.” The Flannels kept their foot on the accelerator and never let up, and their set kept the energy level high from start to end. Pittsburgh’s The Filthy Lowdown slammed the lid on the night with their high-velocity, whiplash-inducing punk and metal-geared rock. This band was a speed trip from start to end, with guitarists Max Snyder and Brandon Habera, bassist Charcontinued on page 16..

Dragline by Jim Price lie Kowalski and drummer Dan Kelly setting the rampaging backdrops for singer Abe Like Lincoln to do his manic thing – often wrapping his mic cord around his face as he barked and snarled tunes from the group’s original song arsenal. Some of The Filthy Lowdown’s tunes this night included “308,” “Punk Rock and Roll,” “Hydroplane” (which is currently getting some Pittsburgh radio airplay), “Dog in Heat” and more. The Filthy Lowdown was fast, furious, intense and focused, and their set provided the perfect blowout finale to the night. McGarvey’s also featured longtime New Jersey-based rockers the Hudson Falcons, who headlined a triple-bill last month. Greg Burley performed his acoustic show before I arrived, and I got there just before the Rik Golden Band took the stage. Namesake Rik on lead voice and guitar, guitar man Rick Ramsey, bassist Steve Seymore and drummer Todd Harshbarger cranked out their set of high-octane, punk-infused original tunes and select covers. Rik and company did longtime original tune favorites like “Jonny Leatherjacket,” “The Gig Is Up,” “Something Else (In Mind),” “Brown Eye Mary” and one from Rik’s Full Time Kings stint, “Don’t Bother Me.” They also broke out versions of Elvis Costello’s “Radio, Radio,” the Rick Ramsey-fronted take on the Ramones’ “The KKK Took
My Baby Away,” a Descendents number and more. Paying their first visit to the McGarvey’s stage, the Hudson Falcons – in the midst of their 20th anniversary tour – tore it up with their mixture of raw, slamming punk and rock’n’roll. Their first few songs demonstrated all-out, reckless abandon, blue-collarthemed punk rock, but gruff-voiced frontman Mark Linskey and the group – guitarist Chris Lynn, bassist Jim and Alyson Cina on drums – then showed another twist on their persona, mixing in some melody-based, thoughtful numbers with a Bruce Springsteen edge – such as “Be There With You,” “Interstate Bound” and “Long Live the King.” There were also several boisterous odes that championed working class struggles, such as their set-opener “Revolution,” “We’ll Fight Back” and more. The Hudson Falcons also threw in a few select covers, including a Devil Dogs number and their closing take on the Dictators’ “Stay With Me,” which infused snippets of CCR’s “Travelin’ Band” and Buddy Holly’s “Oh Boy.” Snowy conditions on a Saturday night last month couldn’t thwart me from seeing Syracuse, New York rockers The Spring Street Family when they paid their first visit to McGarvey’s. This band was impressive as they mixed hard rock, funk, reggae and hip-hop. Rage Against the Machine and Red Hot Chili Peppers served as primary reference points for their sound, but there were also hints of Led Zeppelin, Parliament-Funkadelic and even a touch of jam rock present. Singer Ryan Vendetti brought the fury, from Zach de la Rocha-flavored raps to scathing howls and more, and lead guitarist Ben Blujus did some wild stuff on the guitar strings, with bassist Dennis Lingel and drummer Mike Redmond providing strong rhythms behind them. The Spring Street Family did a number of original tunes, including songs off their self-titled CD such as “Putting the Biscuits in the Basket” and more. They also broke out covers from Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Cake and others – I especially liked their mash-up salvo of DJ Snake/Lil Jon’s “Turn Down for What” into Rage’s “Bulls on Parade” and “Know Your Enemy.” The inclement weather stunted the crowd at McGarvey’s this night, but the Spring Street Family will likely return later this year. The live music dance party machine known as Shallow 9 fired on last month, even as a key component of the group
was missing. Regularly-scheduled lead singer Erika Marino wasn’t available for the group’s performance at McGarvey’s, as she was out of town becoming Erika Marino Ankeny. (Yes, she got married – Congratulations!) In Erika’s absence, though, a few other voices stepped up, including guitarist Ryan Weaver, the group’s frequent-flyer soundman Mike Stanley, and – returning to the lead microphone role after ‘retiring’ ten years ago – former Silver Sunday singer Cathie Stultz. These three platooned singing duties throughout the night, joining guitarist Tucker Landis, bassist Mitch Neuder and drummer Todd Harshbarger. This piecemeal edition of Shallow 9 delivered the hits, keeping the dance floor busy with modern and classic rock, pop, funk, hip-hop and dance favorites. Cathie belted out voice while frequently venturing off stage to serenade the entire room on numbers by Elle King, Fallout Boy, Alanis Morisette, Lady Gaga and others. Ryan fronted the group on hits from Blink 182 and Billy Idol. And in his multitasking role, Mike stepped to the stage between mixing duties to lead Shallow 9 on funk/hip-hop medleys; he led the group on one mash-up medley that fused together House Of Pain’s “Jump Around,” Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean,” Ol’ Dirty Bastard’s “Baby I Got Your Money,” Eminem’s “The Real Slim Shady” and Cypress Hill’s “Insane in the Brain,” and another that put together tunes from Outkast, Commodores, Wild Cherry, Bruno Mars and more. With Erika back at the microphone, Shallow 9 will be busy this month with shows in Maryland and central PA, including performing at the annual Mac’s Irish Bash fundraiser for the McEldowney Academic Scholarship Fund, happening at Altoona’s Jaffa Shrine on March 16. A rising name on area stages is From Down The Road, who made their first appearance at McGarvey’s last month. Comprised of singer Guy Mauro, lead guitarist Ben Eberhart, bassist Eric Baker and drummer Tyler McEvoy; From Down The Road were all over the road musically, playing everything from classic 1960s and 70s rock to 1990s alternative, touches of punk and metal, and original tunes as well. Each of their original tunes had a different vibe – “Anywhere But Here” displayed a Jim Morrison/Doors flavor, and tunes like “The Word,” “Take It From Me,” “Summer Journey Into continued on page 17.

the Sun” and “Magic Rug” also displayed unique flavors. Their cover selection ran the gamut from Metallica’s “For Whom the Bell Tolls” and the Misfits’ “Last Caress” to the Beatles’ “Lucy in the Sky With Diamonds,” the Monkees’ “Daydream Believer,” the Black Sabbath double-shot of “Paranoid” into “War Pigs,” Modest Mouse’s “Float On,” plus tunes from the Raconteurs, Red Hot Chili Peppers, Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave, the Cars, Sublime, Jimi Hendrix, Jet, Weezer and more. With their wide variety of flavors and influences, it will be interesting to see where From Down the Road takes their music in the months ahead. I couldn’t get enough of them on New Year’s Eve, so I enjoyed the happy vibes of D.D. & the Pub Crawlers again early last month at McGarvey’s. This band again delivered upbeat fun as – eight members strong this night – they mixed up a variety of rock, soul, swing jazz, blues, ska and more. With bassist Art Martino, guitarist Jim Howsare, keyboardist Tim Boland and drummer Todd Harshbarger providing the group’s steady backbone, singer Dana “D.D.” Martino belted out lively and happygo-lucky vocals, while the trio of trumpet player Adam Lingenfelter, sax players Lyndsay Reilly and Anthony Martino added the brassy spice. It was all fun, as D.D. & the Pub Crawlers did songs from CCR, Stevie Wonder, Ides Of March, the Eagles, A-ha, Wilson Pickett and more. Some highlights included the group’s swinging medley of Louis Prima’s “Jump Jive and Wail” into the Andrews Sisters’ “Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy,” and – to end the night – the group’s modern swing medley of Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ “Zoot Suit Riot” into Big Bad Voodoo Daddy’s “You and Me and the Bottle Makes Three Tonight.” D.D. & the Pub Crawlers bring their festive music and stage show throughout the region, and they return to McGarvey’s on April 13. After 30-plus years of covering the area music scene, there are some things that – although I have seen them many times – still remain fresh for me. One of them is seeing the Giants Of Science pack dance floors with their trademark blend of 1980s-era pop and new wave classics – something this band has been doing since their inception in the 1990s! I witnessed this again last month during the Giants’ visit to The Arena in State

As I watched this night, it was still cool to see these Giants – Mick on guitar and lead vocals, Scotty B on keys, keytar and vocals, Johnny 5 on bass and Steve on drums – quickly filling the dance floor with those ‘80s-era chestnuts...tunes like Corey Hart’s “Sunglasses at Night,” Men Without Hats’ “Safety Dance,” Dead or Alive’s “You Spin Me Round,” the Bangles’ “Walk Like an Egyptian,” Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s “Relax,” Dexy’s Midnight Runners’ “Come On Eileen,” Soft Cell’s “Tainted Love,” U2’s “Sunday Bloody Sunday,” A-ha’s “Take On Me,” Billy Idol’s “Dancing With Myself,” Journey’s “Any Way You Want It” and “Don’t Stop Believin,’” and many more. Sans their popular white labcoats and facepaints, the Giants Of Science brought the party, and the dancers loved it. The Giants Of Science found their musical niche a long time ago, and they continue to keep dance crowds happy with it, maintaining a busy slate of shows across the state. Buster Krow continues to bring their party to area stages. I caught the last set of the group’s performance early last month at Hollidaysburg’s Old Canal Inn. Singer John Bauman, guitarists/singers Pat Irwin and Jeff Rhodes, bassist J.R. West and drummer Brian Gearhart did a solid job mixing up favorites spanning the 1970s to present. A good-sized crowd cheered and danced to Buster Krow’s takes on numbers by continued on page 18..

the Proclaimers, Black Crowes, Radiohead, Billy Joel, Garth Brooks, Stray Cats, the Rolling Stones and more. Last set highlights included the group’s takes on Elvis Costello’s “Pump It Up” and Stray Cats’ “Rock This Town,” and the crowd not wanting the show to end and coaxing at least three extra songs from the group to finally close the night. Buster Krow returns to the Old Canal Inn on St. Patrick’s Day, March 17. On the acoustic front, Bedford’s Dave Howsare made his first appearance at Altoona’s Family Pizza & Pub in late January. Dave performed a blend of mostly classic rock numbers, demonstrating detailed guitar work and innovative uses of looping and layering on several numbers. Some of his highlights included an extended workout on America’s “Horse With No Name,” his arrangement on the Classics IV’s “Spooky,” the Doors’ “Crystal Ship,” his night-ending take on the Bouncing Souls’ “The Pizza Song,” and a medley that merged together CCR’s “Green River,” Stevie Ray Vaughan’s “Pride and Joy” and “Ice Cream Man.” Dave also performed songs by Neil Young, the Rolling Stones, Black Crowes, Buffalo Springfield, John Mellencamp and more. Dave received a good response from the audience, will return to Family Pizza soon. Also at Family Pizza, I caught up with Conner Gilbert last month. Conner kept the dinner and bar crowd happy with his pleasant mixture of new and older favorites. Conner kept the music constant and nonstop as he sang and strummed acoustic guitar; doing numbers from Cheap Trick, Three Doors Down, Tom Petty, Bryan Adams, Michael Jackson, Walk The Moon, Eagles, Styx, Old Crow Medicine Show, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. The most intriguing highlights for me included Conner’s take on Sheryl Crow’s “If It Makes You Happy,” and his night-ending edition of Marc Cohn’s “Walking in Memphis.” Conner has become a frequent flyer on Altoona area stages; he returns to Family Pizza & Pub on March 23 and April 8. Other performances I have seen recently included various musicians during the weekly Tuesday Open Mic Night at D’Ottavio’s Gran Sasso in Hollidaysburg, and the weekly Wednesday Open Mic Night at the Unter Uns Musical & Entertainment Society, presented by the Live Music Preservation Society. News and notes…Backstreet Law is reuniting for two shows on the weekend of April 13 and 14; on April 13 they will perform at The Arena in State College, and on April 14 they will perform at Goodfellas Warehouse in Pottsville… State College’s The Tommy Roberts has announced they will be going their separate ways after a four-and-a-half year run on area stages…Mysterytrain has added new rhythm guitarist Gary McCloskey, formerly of Cambria County acoustic group Punk Fiction…This Albatross is seeking a new bass player… Images Of Eden has signed with Pavement Entertainment, and will issue their new CD, Soulrise, worldwide later this year. OPEN MIC ON AT MMC 22 TRADESHOW
By Rachel Rocks photos by Rachel Rocks I Survived Millennium Music Conference 22! I still feel like that should be a sticker, but you can only wear it 48 hours after the conference. I’m still downing energy drinks, trying to get back to “normal” life. The second the MMC hits, it’s a no sleep, party til ya can’t party no more kind of weekend, and when you’re coming off the flu already knocking you on your butt, well let me tell ya, it’s a rough ride! But definitely a ride worth taking! Kudos again to John Harris and James Brown and all of his volunteers for making this Millennium another one to never forget! Every year I’m so impressed with all of the talent that transcends on the Harrisburg area. We are so blessed to have this amazing conference right in our own backyard. Having a new hotel is always a little scary, but I was impressed with the Park Inn. It’s a shame how it’s set up and you have to walk so far to your room, but usually the walk to the room was a moment of peace and fresh air! At least the rooms were a little cheaper this year. All of the staff were extremely accommodating and went above and beyond to help us any way they could. Thanks also to Don and Bob from Reliable Backline for providing our little Acoustic Stage set up on the trade show floor. They make it as simple as they possibly can, and with help from a few musicians we can usually get it tweaked in to the point where it’s pretty darn easy to operate. This year we had a total of 47 performers on our stage. I’m sorry time and space are so limited, not every one is going to get their own paragraph. I will post pictures on our Facebook page after the magazine prints, you can check it out at facebook.com/PAMusicianMagazine. Thank you to everyone that took time out of your busy day to play us a song or two. I’m always impressed with all of the performers and it always gets me excited to go out at night for the Showcases! If you want to see where I went for the showcases check out my regular “Out and About” article. Now let’s get talking about the music… The first performer of the day was Saul from Shamokin. He didn’t have a showcase at the Millennium, but he still came down to enjoy every minute of the conference. He was there playing on our stage by 10:45am, he definitely wasn’t wasting any time, and I knew that meant it was time to hold on tight and get ready for the crazy day. Saul sang a great song about “Unison”. We could all handle a little more unison in our lives. If only we could all just get along and help each other, the world would be a happier place. After 12 years of the MMC I’ve definitely met some “regulars”. The next band to come into the room were the Foxfires from New York. I met them last year when they stopped by to play our stage we were hooked and knew we had to check out their showcase. This year they were lucky and their showcase was right on the Bud Light stage so they had a captive audience for everyone that was just hanging at the hotel. It was beautiful to hear Christian play a song dedicated to his Mom that passed away 13 years ago called, “Trust in Me”. Justin Angelo is a frequent flyer to our acoustic stage. He has an amazing voice and has even tried out for the show The Voice! I can’t wait til I see him on TV someday and I can say I knew him when! Justin is local to the Harrisburg area so I’m blessed to be able to see him throughout the year too!
Almond & Olive
Tom Emerson came down all the way from Maine. We think he was the only performer at the MMC from Maine. That is one heck of a drive, especially by yourself. Tom was everywhere throughout the conference, he helped with the bag stuffing, hung out at the Kick-Off, played for us both days on our acoustic stage, he was constantly mingling and enjoying every minute. That’s what going to a music conference is all about! It’s up to you to get out there and mingle! Meet people! We’re all just there to sing, talk, play, and enjoy music!! Share your secrets, talents, and even your failures. If you go to a conference and just sit in your room, or worse, you don’t even stay at the hotel, you just play your showcase and go home, you are truly missing out on an amazing opportunity! Next up were the very talented Flechaus from Austin, TX. They played an amazing song called “Beautiful Things”. Their songs were definitely beautiful and well written. While Flechaus was on stage a local favorite, Ben Bollinger from Six Bar Break stopped by to play us a couple songs. The rest of the guys had to work, but Ben still took full advantage of the opportunity, even pulling out 2 go pros to record his acoustic performance! At their live shows they have Go Pros set up all over the place and then Ben takes the time to splice it all together and he makes really cool videos. You can check them out on their website, Sixbarbreak.com. You can also check out their ad in this issue to see all of the places you can go party with Six Bar Break. Meaghan Farrell came back to her homeland for the MMC. She is originally a Harrisburg native, but has lived in Nashville the last few years. She enjoyed coming back to the “burg” so her family and friends could have the opportunity to come see her music at her showcase. Meaghan sang a great song called “Long Shot” it was about the chances musicians have to take to survive in this industry. Quite appropriate to sing at a music conference, that’s for sure!
Saul
Random Hubiak
Ryan Pleckham we will just refer to as the traveling musician. I can’t remember if he said he was leaving Nashville and heading to Chicago, or the opposite direction, but either way the poor guy didn’t even know how to say where he’s from at that point. So many musicians are constantly on the move trying to get that big break that they all so deserve! Another traveling musician, Alex Schofield, stepped up next. I’m telling you remember his name, he’s going to be the next big country star. He has that classic country sound, and he’s so young and handsome! He is originally from Michigan, but literally Sunday morning after the MMC he was moving to Nashville! Good luck Alex! Next The Random Hubiak showed up carrying his own set of keys! (We’ve been spoiled the last three years with DP Russell’s Piano Conversions bringing in their Grand Piano, but if you missed Dave as much as we did, you can still check out his work and buy a piano by going to dprussell.com.) Now back to The Random Hubiak.. The Random Hubiak came from my favorite place, the Jersey Shore. He just released his new single “These Are Trying Times”, that is a very well written song especially for today’s world to connect to. He came back Saturday too, and both days he left his keys on our stage for anyone to use. That was very nice of him, it was nice to have the option of having keys if someone needed them. Chris Rattie from State College took the stage. He came from State College so Jim has seen him around before. Almond&Olive took some convincing but then finally decided to take the stage. I love their music and their overall vibe. They definitely gained a new fan! When they got on the stage they only played one song, giving anyone who would listen enough of a teaser so they would go to their Showcase.

Alex Schofield
Smolsky from Los Angeles, CA was one of the youngest performers that played on our stage. He’s now old enough to own his own music, but he’s been performing for so long that he had to have his Dad manage his songs because he couldn’t even own them! Don’t let his calm timid appearance fool you, this kid is one heck of a performer! On the other perspective Janine Higgins took the stage next. She’s been busy being a Mom and raising a family, but now it’s her turn to shine! It’s awesome seeing anyone step out of their comfort zone and swing for the rafters! Great job Janine! Another frequent flyer took the stage next, Eli the Hawk stopped by. He has such an amazing storytelling voice, it’s always so nice when he takes the time to stop by and sing us a couple songs. It’s always so hard when you think about all of the Showcases you have to miss because darn it, I am only one person, but it’s nice how the performers have the opportunity to bring their music to me! I was thrilled to see Silver Screen from Johnstown, PA stop by our acoustic stage. I saw them rockin’ so hard Thursday night that they blew a fuse, so it was nice to see they had the control/ skill to be able to scale down their songs for acoustic stage. I love hearing rockin’ musicians play acoustically, it really gives you a chance to truly enjoy the lyrics to each and every song. The Human Circuit is another band that came all the way from Austin, TX. They are regularly a 9-piece band, but they scaled their show down to a 5 piece for our tiny acoustic stage. Mom and I always get a little nervous when we see so much extra equipment take the stage, I mean these guys even had a saxophone, you can’t really turn that down. They were really good, but a little much for our tiny stage. Alon with the group A8 took the stage next. His music style is electronica, so he had some crazy gadget he hooked up to be able to play his music. It was just instrumental and he kept turning his volume up on his gadget, so again we had to tell him, we’re not allowed to blast it, we have to keep it at a minimum, after all, it was an acoustic stage. The last band of the day was Oblivea. They are represented by David Ivory, so I’m thrilled he must tell his artists that they should come play our stage, but they usually walk in like they own the place, and Oblivea was no different. At this point you could tell it was the end of the day, and time to shut down the stage. We can only handle so much stress and demands in one day! Friday night when we were at Midtown Tavern I met Virginia from That Virginia and her percussionist, Brenden. We talked for a few minutes and I told them about the stage, now here it is Saturday morning, and they are the 1st ones of the day on our acoustic stage. Virginia’s voice has that awesome sultry sound to it that makes her music one of a kind. Brenden didn’t

sign up for the MMC, but we found out he also wrote some music, so we convinced him to get up and play too. His original songs premise was “Don’t come home wit no money!” Basically about musicians out there trying to play their music, but not getting much money in return. Later in the day after a nap, Virginia convinced him to get back on the stage again for us for a repeat performance! He says his day job the one that does give him money he works for the water company as a pipeline coordinator so he doesn’t have time for music. Hopefully he finds some extra free time somewhere because he’s a great songwriter and performer. There are so many closet musicians out there that suppress their talents. Get out there and share them with the world! EZ Blues came down from Connecticut. I loved how he warns people he’s not exactly how he looks, a quiet, calm singer songwriter. His songs are loud and aggressive, but have amazing meaning to every one. He was willing to jump up on the stage every chance he got this weekend. I love seeing eager musicians. Melismanaut from right here in PA took the stage next. She came up playing a ukulele and she had purple hair, so I was excited! Her songs were absolutely beautiful. She was so good we even put her on the spot and had her play a third song, which obviously she had no problem doing. Phil Freeman from Small Town Titans stopped by next. The Small Town Titans do everything in there power to market themselves and their music. Phil took great advantage of the stage by not only playing his band’s original music and talking about their showcase, but he also promoted his panel where he was talking about his Vocal Coaching job. Phil’s voice is one like no other, I can’t imagine all of the tricks he can teach a vocalist! Madison Mueller came all the way down from Ontario Canada to share her talents with us, and we are glad she did. She is another very young musician at 17, but she’s already a well seasoned performer, she has been performing every chance she gets since she was 8 years old! Her original music is getting air time all over the world! The Random Hubiak stopped by again with his keyboard and played us some more music and left his keys for anyone to use. He is a super nice guy and a great musician. If you are every in the New Jersey/NY area, make sure you keep an eye out for him and get out to one of his shows. D-Bo from here in Harrisburg hopped up to the mic next. He unfortunately didn’t have his full band with him, but he did have his lap top with tracks so he could still perform for us. He has his own special dance along song, “My Kind of Night” where he had pretty simple dance moves with it and the words were “do the D-Bo” (like the electric slide). His goal is to have people doing the D-Bo at weddings and any special events around the world. I would’ve got up to dance with him if I wasn’t so exhausted. Speaking of which, thanks to Rob Hampton for supplying me with Red Bull and helping me get thru the day on Saturday, without it I probably would’ve been sleeping on the floor soon! Ha! Jelli another local group stopped by next. They were a very groovy three-piece band. They totally surprised me when they were singing a nice folky tune, and then broke down into this crazy section of music that definitely made you wake up and say, “Woah, what was that?!” Suzi Brown stepped up shortly after them, they were good friends and are in the same musical circles in the area. Suzi gets all technical now with her looper machine which is pretty awesome!
Girl Pow-R got the whole group together and stopped by our stage to give everyone a taste of their power. They are a group from Ontario Canada empowering girls through music. We saw them Friday night at their showcase where they all played instruments, to keep things easy they just played to tracks, but this time they brought their dance moves too! Hopefully they impressed people enough to get them out to their showcase. They are even writing originals, their most recent one that was released on YouTube is Krisi. You can check it out online! Animal Sun came up from Charlottesville, VA to share their talents with us. We were lucky and not only did we see them on our stage, we also saw them have an acoustic showcase Thursday and a rockin’ showcase Saturday night! Laura Cheadle another amazing performer out of NJ stepped up next. She sang us some calm beautiful music. We were lucky and she was also able to have a couple extra minutes and play us an extra song. Jon Garcia from Springwood Productions showed us that he not only has filming skills, he has musical talents as well. He was getting ready to go on a mini tour with Evey Zee and he was pretty stoked about that journey! The Vibesmen, one of our advertisers came up from Annapolis, MD. We really wanted to go to their Showcase at ABC, but unfortunately we missed it, (we were napping). I’m glad they stopped by our stage so we could here their awesome music! Hopefully they will make their way back up 83 and plays some more in Harrisburg. Epic Season came down from New Hampshire. They definitely had an “epic” set-up for their two songs at an acoustic stage, but we managed to pull it off. They had 5 performers, and they even brought in their amps so their bass and guitar player could plug in! Hey, ya know ya gotta do what makes you happy, and
they were definitely happy and just wanted to share their music in all its glory! After some repeat performers, Bill Kurzenberger finally got his hands on some keys. He missed Dave’s grand piano, but he was happy to tickle any ivories. Thankfully The Random Hubiak still had his keys there so he could play us a song or two. Neil Obremski, a break-off from Epic Season stepped up to play us his own two songs. One of his songs he played the uke and the next one he picked up the guitar. It is just crazy seeing all of the talent on just our one tiny little stage. I know people got frustrated with us hustling them on and off the stage, but we just want to give everyone a chance! Last but not least is Chris Whitmer. Chris has been coming to the MMCs as long as I have been I think and he plays our stage every year. It was quite fitting that he was the last one to play our stage for MMC 22. Chris is another local musician that has such amazing talents. We are truly blessed with the music we have surrounding our small city. Chris also plays with other musicians in a band called The Crow Flies. Wow! That’s all!! I hope I didn’t miss anyone. Perfect timing because I have to leave for work soon and stare at a computer all day, so this should be fun! Thank you again to everyone for stopping by our stage and sharing your many talents with us! It was once again an epic event and one I’m always grateful to host! Thanks again to Reliable Backline for providing us with our equipment, and for Mom for being the queen of the sound board. I flutter around more, she’s sort of stuck back there behind the table making it all possible! Don’t forget to check out our facebook page, where I will be posting the pictures I took of all of our performers, facebook.com/PAMusicianMagazine. OUT & ABOUT continued
Derek to have a little more freedom, and they also added Bob Richardson on keys. Yes, that’s the same Bob Richardson that plays with Hybrid Ice. He’s an amazing keyboard player and he substantially adds to OT93’s music and stage presence. You can tell he’s definitely been giving the guys pointers. It was also equally awesome to see Tyler smiling on stage once again having a good time. Hopefully our paths will cross again soon! I saw a few songs from Gas Station Disco. I haven’t seen them in years and they pretty much have a new line-up since I did see them, but they can still rock a stage. They’ve played all over the East Coast and beyond. They have a new name they use just for their original music, but unfortunately I didn’t see it anywhere, so I can’t remember it. It’s awesome seeing such a busy/successful party band take time out of their busy schedules to focus on originals. I’m sure it’s not easy to find the time, but they are making it work! Finally it was time for the last two bands of the MMC and I wanted to desperately see them both. I started out with Single By Sunday back on the Bud Light stage, but since I did already see them twice this conference, I then pulled myself away to go see Epoch Failure on the Filson Water Stage. This is my 3rd MMC in a row seeing Epoch Failure, and I was equally impressed this year as I’ve been other years. Their songs are so much fun, you can’t help but dance and join in the fun! They are a hip-hop artist, but yet still manage to keep their songs
uplifting and positive. Their one song “Every Day Great” has recently been used for the Trailer for the movie Wonder. They have over 30 credits already in TV, Film, and Advertising. It’s awesome to see what these guys come up with every year. They are very creative and one heck of a band! They were definitely a great way to end a weekend full of amazing music! Yeah!! I’m finally done with this article!!!! Thank you so much to everyone who traveled from near and far to be part of the MMC. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting everyone and hearing all of the music! Thanks John Harris for once again hosting/organizing/creating another fun filled MMC! I’m always impressed at every artist you choose! I unfortunately can’t possibly put every picture I took in the magazine because there is only so much room, but I will create an album on our facebook page, facebook.com/PAMusicianMagazine. Check it out and give us a “Like” so you don’t miss it! For all my local musicians I’ll finally be back “Out and About” I just need a few days to sleep from all of the craziness. March will be another crazy month with The Lancaster Roots & Blues Festival and I’m also contemplating heading over to the Cape May Singer/Songwriter Festival at the end of March, after all it’s close to the beach, so it will be a good excuse to go check out a new beach in Jersey!
