March Madness is upon us. It’s getting crazy around here at the office it’s starting to feel like spring is about to be sprung from the deep winter slumber. The phone is ringing off the hook and they all want to sell me car insurance or some great extended warranty. I keep telling them, I don’t own any cars so why would I want insurance, and would your warranty cover my 1987 Nissan ‘cause I’d like a new bed please, mine is rusted. They never seem to understand my frustration with them calling me from some local random number. Sometimes I get some cool calls from readers with crazy off the wall questions and we talk for a couple of minutes maybe even several. Some about a band they can’t remember the name of or if I know the dudes name from this band? Then before we know it bam, friends are made and new music is found.

After attending MMC 23 I got to meet so many new people and hear new bands that it was a little overwhelming at times, but we had a crazy good time listening to so many live bands and hanging out with everyone. I’m not going to attempt to do a run down of all the great music like my talented writers do but I will give you a quick retrospect of what I took in from MMC. First, a lot of people don’t really understand what a bag stuffing is. It was kind of funny watching them all figure it out. Yes, it is a BAG-STUFFING, YOU WILL BE STUFFING BAGS! Like for real, place the goodies in the bag, read later. I was aware and ready to go, others not so much, but by the end of the night everyone has a blast and it’s a great ice breaker. You get to know the people you will be hanging with for the weekend. You can really pick out the over achievers figuring out ways to go faster and we did get it moving at the end by doing double time.

Next its straight to the kick off party and live music! Chelsea Takami started off the night as a solo act out of New York. She ended up winning the Jim Price download Cd pick and will have an interview on his 105.9 Qwik rock show later in the spring along with Anker a New Jersey based singer-songwriter who won the Cd pick. The bands were all amazing and I’m sure Rachel has the full list in her article so check Out ’N’ About for the rundown. JP and Michelle will cover all they experienced in our April issue.

So Friday was go time, setup the booth and start meeting people. It was cool talking to people from out of the area not familiar with the paper. A lot of them wish they had something like this around or did at one time and now it’s gone so it felt good taking over the helm and keeping ‘her’ going for our local music scene.

I also got to meet lots of local people who do know of us and its great catching up with people and meeting new ones. Before I knew it bands were playing again and some of the stand outs for Friday were Six Bar Break, they rock it! Love Ben’s hat and his guitar riff’s, great band, those guys are some hard working dudes. A new band that I really dug was Blind Choice, a three piece of younger dudes out of Scranton/Wilkesbarre area who really rocked. They got the punk rock sound going and some great energy and If you haven’t heard of them then you need to check them out at facebook@blindchoice. Another big one for me at MMC was Defiant, these guys are booking some great gigs and coming up soon they are playing with LA Guns at the Chameleon Club on April 20th in Lancaster. This is one I would

put on the must see list for us heavier listeners. They sounded great in the Ballroom up at HMAC. What a cool place to play it is such a great room. After them it was Meka Nism they were awesome with sound splitting lyrics and heavy guitar riffs with a whole “performance involving” show if that makes sense. All great bands loved it.

Saturday was another day on the trade show floor, the bands really started breaking in the Open Mic stage provided by Rock Mill Industries and they did a great job. Super nice guys and we had a great time hanging and making jokes all weekend. One band that caught my eye was Sour Mash String Band. I knew I had to catch a full set so I put them on the list for later that evening up at Midtown Tavern. They are a bluegrass string band as the name suggests complete with an upright bass. Man I just love Bluegrass and I knew Missy would too. We got there a band ahead of them and got to see The Charming Beards out of Wilkes barre area, I believe.They are the self proclaimed worlds most awkward band according to the drummer but the way they mesh on stage makes for some awesome tunes in what they call a blend of folk and rock. I just know I liked it. Sour Mash String Band was next, and they just captured everyone’s attention as soon as they started playing the mix of stringed instruments and vocal harmonies straight from the West Virginia based band it was nothing short of amazing. MMC really brings in great talent so you can’t go wrong hitting up any MMC showcase band they are all good. I even heard from a good friend who I was meeting at HMAC that he got to see his first Hip-Hop show and he loved it. Coming from a guy who favors Clutch and Slayer that’s saying something. We went up and ended our MMC with Small Town Titans. I had seen them at Club XL before the Grinch and really thought hey this could be one of the last times you get to see them before they become famous like Halestorm. They put on a great show as always and its awesome seeing the Titan Army coming out in support. Check the schedules in the paper catch them while you can so you can say “I seen those guys live at Blarney’s Dude! on St. Patrick’s Day March 16th 2019 they killed it brah!” And that was Millennium Music Conference/ MMC 23.

Ok, so now what is WAYNESTOCK? Well that is a great question. It all started 20 years ago as some dude named Wayne and his buddies wanted to run some white water rapids. I just happened to be best friends with his brother so it became an annual head to West Virginia Pilgrimage that turned into a huge 200+ some people attended camping, adventure, rave, mud/jello wrestling (depending on year), zip lining, hiking, biking, jeepin, lounging by the pool, bi-plane rides oh did I mention white water rafting. The ticket includes white water rafting and your campsite, “basic snack food” and a meal ticket for after rafting and much more. The area is packed with things to do outside of rafting so if someone in the group is scared of the rafting there are plenty of other groups to join or to go do some other cool adventure (even if that’s laying by the pool or hot tub). This year marking 20 years, Wayne is going all out and The Mighty River Band Is heading down to entertain the group. There have been bands in the past but never a PA transplant, so it’s going to be a blowout adventure not to be missed. Bring your acoustic or some drums for the circle, there are always musicians on this trip ready to jam. Plan now, this isn’t for everyone, and its sorta of a, hey we need to ok it thing. But you most likely have a friend of a friend who can vouch for your saneness. If you have always wanted to whitewater raft this is the way to do it. You have a support system and a bunch of like minded people around to insure you have a great time and make lifelong friends. Peace out Pennsylvania I got to catch up on my Survivor Reruns from 2006. OUT ‘n’ ABOUT

I survived MMC 23! Barely, but I did. So much music to write about, and such limited space. I’m extremely bummed that I missed Lancaster Roots and Blues, I heard that was super intense too. I was determined to have the energy to go down to

Lancaster Sunday, but it didn’t happen. I saw some pictures and videos and it looked like everyone was having a good time. Now time to get to what I did see.

My month started many moons ago with a 717 Entertainment Show at HMAC with Thousand Pound Destruction, Defiant, Bleed the Dream, and Wrath of Typhon. Nick from 717 Entertainment was quiet for a while, but now he’s back with a vengeance; booking bands like crazy and bringing back HMAC! HMAC is a great venue with 3 different stage areas that make it a great and very versatile venue for any show.

I got to the show in time for the last few songs of Thousand Pound Destruction. These guys are more of thrash metal band, but yet you can still understand what Ryan is singing. It was awesome to see their fans thrashing around and having a great time. It was also awesome to see Ryan’s son up there singing along. Defiant took the stage next, it’s awesome seeing Defiant’s schedule getting more and more shows added to it, hmm it’s almost like it must help to advertise in the PA Musician Magazine… It also helps Defiant knows how to rock! Every time I see them, they hit the stage with so much intensity! Their sets are never long enough, it seems like as soon as the craziness gets started, their set is over and it’s time for the next band, but that’s also what makes you want to keep coming back for more!

Defiant will be opening for L.A. Guns on April 20th at the Chameleon, and they have a few other great shows lined up, check out their ad in this issue and give them a call to buy tickets! After Defiant I had to head to my next adventure, but before I left Wrath of Typhon gave me one of their new CDs, I’m definitely intrigued and I want to check those guys out soon.

My next stop of the night was over to Club XL for Small Town Titans. It was awesome finally seeing these guys on a stage where they could move around and have a great time. Even though there are only three of them they really need a lot of space to move! It’s cool to see the hype of the Grinch move on to their originals. “Junkie For You” is one of my faves followed with “Dragonfly” depending on my mood. It’s awesome seeing Small Town Titans music explode throughout the world. We’re all watching and can’t wait to see where they go!

Even on a Thursday night, there is still music to hear, Nate Myers and the Aces at Boneshire Brew Works. It’s awesome how Boneshire has music on Thursdays. Boneshire isn’t huge, but it’s very homey and it’s one of those bars where everyone knows your name. Nate and Pete were just playing acoustic, so again it was a perfect chill night with great music and friends. The following weekend was also nice and calm with Sweet Corn & Peanut opening for Six Bar Break at the Mechanicsburg G-Man. Sweet Corn & Peanut are such a sweet little duo with such an amazing vibe and a one of a kind sound in every song.

I actually saw Six Bar Break twice this month, once it was only

RT and Ben at Spring Gate, and now this time at the G-Man. Every time I get a chance to catch Six Bar Break I know it will be a nice chilled out night with great music! They have a new super cool camera to help record them while they play. If you want to see some cool gadgets that help DIY musicians’ lives be a little bit easier come check out Six Bar Break’s set up at their next show. The following Monday I had a very special treat, I was invited to be a special guest on Lurch’s Lair! DJ Addam has two shows every week streaming on Neue Regel Radio, Sunday nights he has a Free-For-All where you can hear a little bit of everything.

Monday nights have 3 hours of Independent and Up-N-Coming artists. Both shows start at 6pm. I was on the show for two hours talking about the MMC. DJ Addam had me send him a list and I was able to introduce each artist and hear some of my favorite bands get some air-time! Well it’s finally time for the Millennium Music Conference #23 coverage. The MMC was again another super amazing weekend filled with fantastic music, friends, and very little sleep! These are the weekends you really live the words, “I’ll sleep when I’m dead..” When there are 2.5 nights of music and over 300 bands to see how can anyone possibly sleep! Congrats to Josh for surviving his first MMC as the boss. I was quite impressed with his trade show skills. Michele and Chris also survived their first MMC. I was thrilled they were hanging out at the trade show with us, between Jim and Michele I don’t even have to write about or take pictures of all of the trade show performers! I’m telling you, I really felt like I was on vacation this year at the MMC. It’s good to have a great team, and we really do!

So let me back track a bit, the MMC officially kicked off with the Thursday night bag stuffing. I was picking up my good friend CK from Boston at HIA, so it’s very sad, but I missed stuffing bags this year, but it was cool to see so many people there helping when I arrived. After the stuffing it was time for the Kick-Off Party inside Blarney’s Pub Stage. The bar was busy all night long which is awesome for a Thursday night.

The first performer of MMC 23 was Chelsea Takami from NY. She was a great opener, she quickly had us all sucked in and appreciating her music. Her lyrics were very meaningful and I know they rang true deep into my soul. I also appreciated how Chelsea worked the room before and after her performance. At big festivals you can quickly get lost in the shuffle, but Chelsea made sure she made an impression on everyone in the room, not only Thursday, but the whole conference.

Another solo artist from NY, Abby Lappen took the stage next.

Abby has more of a folk music sound to her music, but it was a good mix to truly showcase all of the different types of artists continued on next page...

OUT & ABOUT continued..... there are at the MMC. Abby also played on Rock Mill Studio’s Day Stage on the trade show floor, so we were able to see her and hear her even more. She was also Jim’s first caricature of the conference. It’s awesome watching him sketch his subjects!

Next up was a 3-peat MMC performer, Autopilot from Canada! Autopilot is an alternative rock band that are very passionate about their music and their performances. These guys are literally some of the hardest working musicians I know. There must not be much to do in Saskatoon because it seems like they are always on tour somewhere down here in the states, lucky for us MMC is one of their tour stops. If all goes well they will also be at the Jersey Shore Music Festival, once again on tour, and I will see them there!

The Bad Verbs from FL took the stage next. They have a very spunky front lady, Gaia Jones. Gaia has a crazy set of pipes and some really intense dance moves. The Bad Verbs are more of a very danceable, electro-rock band. Every song they played had an addictive beat that quickly had you bopping or even dancing along.

One of last year’s most shocking bands were back again, all the way from Scotland, Single by Sunday. These guys are at the perfect age to entertain the masses and they have the energy to do it. All of their songs have so much energy and they are so catchy you are quickly dancing and singing along. They are also another super hard-working band. They were actually over here on our side of the pond for 9 months out of 12 since the last MMC. They made some amazing connections at the MMC they couldn’t resist. They’ve been all over North America, playing for anyone who will listen. On a softer side they love playing at schools and teaching kids about bullying through music. They are not only great musicians, but also just great people!

The Park Inn learned last year that musicians aren’t very quiet when they are trapped in their rooms, so they were kind enough to open the Ballroom up for an after party every night. Hopefully that cut down on the ruckus in the rooms. We try to be quiet and well-behaved people, but it can quickly get out of control. After some late night antics it was time to call it a night, and prepare for another fun day.

The trade show this year was awesome. Rock Mill Studios did an amazing job at hosting the open mic stage this year. They were definitely way more experienced and had all kinds of gadgets and gizmos. Michele and Jim were both doing a great job at taking notes and Chris was taking pics, so it was definitely a vacation for me. Just a few of the Day Stage performers I really enjoyed were, Miguel from Middle Theory from KS, the acoustic version of Running Late from NJ, Allwin from Sweden, Justin Angelo and Matt Tarka who are both from Lancaster.

You’ll have to read all of the details about the trade show stage in Michele and Jim’s articles. (Jim will be writing about the MMC in April). I always have fun catching up with everyone during

the trade show, but this year I feel like I could have actual conversations with people. Thanks for stopping by and thanks for being awesome!

Friday night it was time to hit the showcase venues. I hung out in the Pub Stage long enough to hear Laura Cheadle from Philly.

Laura quickly captivated the audience with her bluesy, soulful self! She will be playing at Singer-Songwriter Cape May. That’s another festival I’d like to check out sometime. After Laura I zoomed down the road to Dead Lightning Distillery to catch Jake Puliti’s set. Jake was on our cover back in August, and he will now be on the new season of American Idol starting March 3rd, I can’t wait to see if he gets a Golden Ticket!! Jake now has 3 original songs recorded, out there for everyone to enjoy. I’m glad I was able to catch Jake again before his stardom starts!

After Jake I zoomed back to Blarney’s to pick up my friends, but before we left I was able to catch a few more bands. Stephanie & the Wild Hearts from PA were playing on the Deck Stage.

Josh always said they were good, but I’m glad I finally got a chance to catch them, they are amazing! Wow! What a tight knit great group of musicians. Stephanie has some awesome vocals, and the guys do a great job backing her up. I’ll definitely be keeping an eye on Blarney’s schedule to see when they are coming back, because I’d love to catch a full show!

Kali Ma and the Garland of Arms from Wilkes-Barre were playing in on the Pub Stage. KMGA doesn’t sound like you’re average PA band, they are definitely different. When I looked at their “About” section they describe their music as “Neo Psych Space Pop” it’s different but very well-orchestrated. They just released their first album and they are hitting the road. Throughout March and April they will be leaving PA and heading as far North as VT and beyond, so keep an eye out for them in your town!

Once my friends were ready to start hopping around to showcases we headed out. I dropped them off at Savannah’s for Single By Sunday and The Bad Verbs while I went across the street to Keller Williams and The Accidentals. Michele and Chris were again doing a great job covering Club XL so after I picked up my friends we headed to Midtown Tavern to catch the end of Autopilot’s set. Some year I’d love to see Autopilot at a different venue, but they at least know what to expect at Midtown Tavern and obviously it does help build the crowd up when the bartenders know the band and can tell their regulars about them before they get there! After zooming around it was time to go back to the hotel and wind down with friends.

had some local musicians play on the day stage too! III for the Road did a great job as a duo even tho they usually play as a trio.

I love when bands get creative so they can play the Day Stage.

It was great hearing AJ and Jackie Cassatt, I haven’t heard them for years even tho they play locally. It was also great to see The Foxfires again! We always have a blast with those crazy guys.

We also had a special treat from WV, the Sour Mash String Band. Josh was so impressed he went to see their full showcase later Saturday night.

Saturday night was a bit more complex even though it was tons of fun! I think you get to the point of panic because you really want to see EVERYBODY, but unfortunately as one person that is just not humanly possible. We started off our night with Observe the 93rd at Club XL. My out of towner friends haven’t seen Club XL yet, so it was cool for them to see it. Plus, OT93 is one of our favorite bands so it was cool to see the guys kick off the local band showcase at XL. They just released “Alive” and I highly suggest checking out their song “Cartoons”. After their set Jose and I went across the street to River City for Nothing Planned. These guys are a young party punk band from Shippensburg. They had people on the dance floor rockin’ out and they even had people there wearing their merch. I’m sure we’ll be seeing more from Nothing Planned soon. After their set we headed back to XL to get our friends to go see Sunset Kings from Boston at Ever Grain. The Sunset Kings are another band that has their own unique sound with a blend of different instruments and vocals. Everyone at Ever Grain seemed to be enjoying the music which was very encouraging to see. We need more breweries to start hosting more live music! There are too many breweries and not enough venues! While we were at Sunset Kings we got a call from Single By Sunday back at River City that the band left without letting them use their amp, and obviously they can’t play without an amp. Luckily, I’m good friends with OT93 and I was able to hunt down Derek at Club XL and we were able to use their amp for Single By Sunday. Thanks Ryan for getting Derek’s amp back to him safe and sound, and super huge thanks to Derek from Observe the 93rd for letting us borrow your amp. After everything was situated we headed down to HMAC because Jose wanted to see Small Town Titans.

I went so many different places and all of them had a decent crowd. It was awesome to see so many people out supporting live music. After STT I headed back to River City to pick up my friends and it was finally time to head back to the hotel for the after party. See.. sleep.. Who needs it? HA! Overall, I once again had a blast at the MMC. I hung with old friends and met plenty of new ones. John Harris and his team once again outdid themselves organizing so many different bands at so many different venues. I also heard a lot of good feedback about the panels, and every time I went to the mentoring room to see Heather, that looked busy too. Kudos to all of the sound guys for keeping things running smoothly and all of the venues for opening up their doors to some live music.

One person I did meet this year was Indian from MotorMedia.

He hosts two music festivals a year, one in Mesa, AZ in November, and another one is the Jersey Shore Festival May 17th and 18th! This is the 12th year for the Jersey Shore Festival in Seaside Heights. I absolutely love the Jersey Shore so Indian told me, no excuses, be there! You can still submit your band for FREE at jerseyshorefest.com. I would LOVE to be able to see some of my PA Bands jamming out on the Jersey Shore. It’s not only a music festival, there are all kinds of activities from BMX to Monster Trucks to Free Surf and Paddleboard Lessons.

I talked to bands that have played there and everyone said it’s pretty amazing!

Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Harrisburg’s latest and largest nightclub Club XL continues to set the pace for bringing notable National acts. This past month Club XL hosted two really great artists Kurt Vile and the Violators on February 11th and The Glorious Sons on February 16th. Kurt Vile became a solo artist after being the former lead guitarist of The War on Drugs from Philadelphia. Vile put on a great show and his lo-fi indie songs are always good and sometimes truly exceptional. He currently has 62 concerts for 2019 and is touring his latest release ‘Bottle It In’. I was fortunate to meet Kurt Vile after the show and talk, he was very down to earth, humble and even shy. Vile grew up in Lansdowne, PA and worked as a forklift driver before becoming a musician in 2003.

Canadian rock band The Glorious Sons also put on a memorable show with a sold-out performance at Club XL. It was also the band’s largest venue to be playing on their current trek across the United States. The Ontario-based group has been gaining recognition with their hits “S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun)” and “Everything Is Alright.”

eight consecutive top-10 rock radio hits in Canada. Their current headlining tour will lead the band into Festival dates in April and May including the WMMR BBQ in Camden, NJ on May 18. My thanks to former radio DJ Bob Waters for introducing me to this band and for his passion of spreading the word about The Glorious Sons.

Harrisburg’s annual Millennium Music Conference held its 23rd premier music event Feb 21-23. Over 250 acts from as far away as Canada, Scotland and Sweden performed at 25 venues in Central PA. It was great to catch bands like The Twindows, Running Late, Madison Ryan, Single By Sunday and Autopilot. The internet live stream of the Keynote address from Rock Lititz was very informative and educational. Congratulations to founder John Harris Jr. on another successful conference year.

NATIONAL NEWS: Ozzy Osbourne has been forced to cancel appearances in the U.K., Europe, Australia, New Zealand and Japan to give him time to recover from pneumonia.

“Ozzy recently developed pneumonia and has spent some time in hospital Thankfully he is now through the worst part,” Ozzy’s manager and wife, Sharon Osbourne, said in a statement. “His doctors have advised that he stay at home to recuperate for a full

By Michelle Kelley Shortly after graduating from Newport High School, in the late 1980’s, a local guy, Wayne Lesperance and a handful of his buddies from Newport, went on a whitewater rafting trip on the Youghiogheny River. Piled in a van were Shawn, Bryon, Johnny, Keith, Wayne and Bones. All of them were from Newport,

20 years later, an annual adventure festival, bearing his name, is held in South Central, West Virginia. When sitting down in an interview with Wayne, he talks about all his adventures through the years.

It’s been 20 years! Congratulations on what sounds to be an amazing journey! What should someone expect for the 20th Anniversary of Waynestock?

“Thank you! It certainly has been a great time! This year we are really turning it up a few notches, and when I say ‘we’, I mostly mean Joey. As I said, it’s a volunteer effort, but the captain of that effort is Joey Osbeck. Without him, there would be no Waynestock.”

Well, anyone that knows Joey knows he goes above and beyond! How did Joey become such a big part of Waynestock?

“He earned it! He is a hard worker by nature and he’s a mas-

Was the first rafting trip you mentioned the start of Waynestock as we know it?

“No, that was just my introduction to whitewater rafting. Several years had passed and I wanted to do it again, but was looking for a bigger challenge. I went to the Outdoor Show and saw a booth for a company in Fayetteville, W.V. that did trips down the New River. It looked interesting, so I stopped and talked with them. The outfitter was called ‘Extreme Expeditions’ and I was intrigued. I don’t remember what the price was, but I do remember the guy saying ‘If you get a group together, I can give you a better rate.’ I thought, I get groups together nightly, so that shouldn’t be a problem.”

In May of 1999 Wayne, along with 50 plus friends, made their way down to the New River Gorge for the first trip, and what would become an annual trip, to Fayetteville, W.V. “We learned a lot on that trip. Mostly, how unprepared we were. Not unprepared for the rafting, but the accommodations at that time were essentially a field for us to set up tents, and a shower house.

The following year, we decided to do it again, but this time with a few enhancements. We brought more food, beer, borrowed a canopy for group shelter and even hauled firewood all the way from PA. That was a trip. I’ll never forget my brother Brent, loading firewood in his pickup truck and hauling ass up and down the mountain route we took that year. It was crazy, but we were glad he did it when we sat around the fire those two nights in the mountains of W.V. A lot has changed over the years. Each year, the group improves in preparing for the trip. There are a number of people that help in various ways. Some contribute by donating their time, some donate stuff. All add value in some way. The ‘Rafting Trip’ had become almost a small festival. Extreme Expeditions is now River Expeditions and has since relocated. The owners, Rick and Heather, know how to run a business and how to treat people. Through the years, we have become decade long friends. We no longer haul firewood all the way down there. We started to develop connections with people who live there and could deliver firewood to us. River Expeditions helped us with a lot of things that made it easier to pull off a weekend that was both growing in numbers and in grandeur.

By the 10th year, an aspiring filmmaker asked if he could make a documentary about the event. When the filmmaker asked what we called this event, I said ‘The Rafting Trip’, which was all I had ever referred to it as. What I didn’t realize was everyone from River Expeditions was calling it ‘Waynestock’. Although it was clever, I did push back at first. I thought it sounded too egotistical to call it that, but I was overruled by virtually everyone and the name was born. It’s been with us ever since.”

Are there other things to do besides whitewater rafting?

“Definitely. By year 15, it had really become more of an outdoor adventure festival, with lots of options. Activities that range from a Hatfield & McCoy ATV tour to zip lining, rappelling, horseback riding, hiking and waterfall jumping. There is also a beautiful pool, large outdoor hot tub, lodge, camping store, gift shop, volleyball court, disc golf course and a Saloon.

This is going to be my third year attending, what about this year is going to be bigger or different than normal?

“This year we have a band coming from Harrisburg. ‘The Mighty River Band’ will be performing on Saturday night. Traditionally, we don’t have live bands since it’s not a music festival. Although there has always been a huge musician element to the event, since many of my friends are accomplished musicians. The campfire jams have historically been legendary. This is the first time having a scheduled performance.”

What made you decide to have the Mighty River Band play?

“Waynestock has always had an underlying theme at its core. From the tie dyed tapestries you see everywhere to the main drag, known as ‘Shakedown Street’. It has the feel of being at a Grateful Dead concert, which is not by accident. Many years ago, a friend took me to my first Grateful Dead show. It honestly changed my life. My roots were already germinated in hippy culture, because of my mom (known as Mama Waynestock in W.V.). I was raised on the beaches of Cape Cod, MA for the first 10 years of my life; we spent all summer without shoes or a care in the world. I found a similar vibe at Grateful Dead shows. What I try to do at Waynestock is create that same environment. I realize we can’t live like that all the time, but we can for a weekend.

So, in honor of the Grateful Dead and their influence on Waynestock, I decided to have the next best thing to the Dead playing, The Mighty River Band. I saw these guys perform at a local venue one evening and was blown away. I knew right then, no matter what it took, I was going to book them for WSXX. Friday night will be another treat. From Chapel Hill, N.C., ‘A light and sound explosion by LSDJ’ will be kicking things off in style. This guy has performed all over the world with nationally known artists like AfroMan, and I think he’ll fit right in. Keep in mind; this is all happening outside, in the mountains. Not a place you would normally expect to see an 8 piece band, or laser light show. It should be interesting.”

Is there anything else you want to mention about Waynestock?

ter of just about everything I suck at. He leads a team of people that head down there, upwards of a week in advance. ‘The Waynestock Advance Team’, as we call them. It’s one of those nicknames that are accidentally hilarious”. The team hauls everything down and builds a small village before people start arriving. We have a food tent, beer tent and bar car. All of which gets equipped with the proper power and lighting. There is a lot that goes into setting up and maintaining everything. That’s Joey’s job, along with the crew of people he oversees. This year, because it is the 20th Anniversary, we are recruiting a handful of red, blue and gold ‘taggers’ to have an even bigger role than normal.”

Can you tell me what you mean by red, blue and gold ‘taggers’?

“Red, blue and gold ‘taggers’ or dog tags, refer to how many times you’ve come to Waynestock. We used to give out wristbands but switched to something you can bring along every year.

It’s the identifier that separates you from others that might be down there the same weekend, staying at River Expeditions. We started doing it in 2012, if I remember correctly. Your first year at Waynestock, you get a silver dog tag. If you come back for a second time, you get a red one. After 5 times at Waynestock, you earn a blue tag. Gold tags are for 10 years.

There are other tags as well. For example, black tags are for staff, green tags were issued for cast members of the Appalachian Outlaws, from the Prime Time Show on the History Channel. One member of our group actually has his own tag. He issues 5 of them every year to worthy recipients. There is no specific rhyme or reason that I can identify for how you earn it, other than having superior party skills. That tag is probably the most coveted, but it doesn’t come easy. Earning the Dylan Hoover Orange Tag is a genuine achievement. A couple of years ago we had a tag that was basically earned the same way as beads are earned at Mardi Gras. This year we have a special commemorative 20 year tag.”

“To sum it up, I would say you just have to experience it for yourself to understand what makes it special. So many people have met and become lifelong friends because of this event. I think there is a bit of the “foxhole” effect, for those who raft especially. When you spend a whole day in a raft, with a group of people, you bond with them on a deeper level. Even if you don’t raft, spending a weekend living in a small community really brings people together. That’s what I love more than anything. The relationships that are formed there and the positive, lifelong impact it has on everyone.”

One last question, how does someone sign up to go to Waynestock?

“Well, it’s like this, in order to keep it from becoming too large for capacity at River Expeditions, it’s (loosely) invitation only. We prefer to have someone vouch for you. We have only had one rule in 20 years, and it’s very simple. ‘Don’t bring an asshole’. We all know at least one guy/girl that drinks a little too much and wants to fight people. Leave that person at home.

HITTING THE ROAD

Another month closer to Spring! Ah, I cannot wait for warmer weather! I know many of you are feeling the same way right about now. February proved to be a really hard month for us in the beginning. Between kid schedules and the dreaded word, SNOW, we got off to a late start. We were scheduled to see Kurt Vile at Club XL in Harrisburg on the 11th. Due to the weather we were not able to make it. Vile was the kick off to the Harrisburg University Spring Concert Series. We were extremely disappointed we missed him play but there are more to come with this series and we cannot wait to bring them to you.

The second half of February definitely kept us hopping. We started on the 14th and swung by Boneshire Brew Works in Harrisburg. It’s a cool little place if you haven’t been there yet.

There we saw Ed Varner play. Ed is a solo, acoustic, classic rock musician that has been playing for over 30 years and is from the Mifflintown/McAlisterville area. He played a wide range of music from The Eagles to 4 Non-Blondes and many others that really surprised me. You might know Ed from the many local bands he has played in over the years. Strycnine, Riff Raff, Tsk Tsk, Razkal, Denim and Diamonds, The Remnants and not to mention church bands and some Christian Rock bands. Another surprise was watching him play kazoo. Yes, you read this correctly, KAZOO! Not just a Kazoo, but a sparkly, purple kazoo, which his cute granddaughter likes to claim as hers. While it was pretty hysterical seeing him play a kazoo, he was actually pretty good at it. After his show he explained he orders them in bulk since his granddaughter likes to play with them, and well, most little kids are not very gentle with toys. Ed is booking gigs all over the place. The next evening we went to Sunoco Performance Theater at The Whitaker Center in Harrisburg to see Houndmouth, co-sponsored by WXPN. Mother Moses was the opening band for Houndmouth. They are a Folk/Rock band that originally formed in 2013 by singer, songwriter, and guitarist Jon Cox. Jon was raised in the Carlisle area but has since moved to Philadelphia. He was joined on stage with Collin Dennen: upright bass/vocals and Genevieve Degroot: vocals. Albums include “Slow the Fire” and “Traveling Glass”. The first half of their second album, “Traveling Glass”, was released in 2017 and the full length album is set to be released in July this year. They are currently working on an EP entitled, “Bowling Shoes” that will be released in May this year. I had the opportunity to listen to the ‘Slow the Fire’ album and I really enjoyed it. Houndmouth took the stage next. Harrisburg was their first stop on their tour to promote their third, full-length album, ‘Golden Age’. This album was released in August, 2018. They are a band founded on roots and Americana that formed in 2011 in New Albany, IN. Members included Matt Myers; guitar/vocals, Shane Cody: drums/vocals, Katie Toupin: keyboard/vocals and Zak Appleby: bass/vocals. In 2012 they released a homemade, self-titled EP. The band really took off in 2013 with performances at several major music festivals, touring with bands like Alabama Shakes (one of my favorites) and Drive-By Truckers. They released their debut album, “From the Hills Below the City” and had a TV appearance on David Letterman and Conan O’Brien. In 2015 they followed up with their third album, “Little Neon Limelight”, which featured their #1 hit “Sedona”. In 2016, Katie left the band to pursue other opportunities. This left fans wondering how the sound of Houndmouth would continue.

The band added touring members Caleb Hickman: keyboard/ vocals and also added Graeme Gardiner and Drew Miller with duel saxophones. This gave the band a little bit of a new sound but still keeping the quality that fans really enjoy. They put on a tight and polished performance that was full of energy! I have to admit, sitting for most of the show was extremely difficult. If you haven’t heard them yet, they make you want to get up and move. Definitely check them out and go see a show. It was so much fun! A special thank you goes out to The Whitaker Center for welcoming us! We look forward to working with them on upcoming shows.

The following evening was the 2nd performance of the Harrisburg University Spring Concert Series with 105.7 The X and Club XL in Harrisburg. First to take the stage was opening band, JJ Wilde, touring with The Glorious sons promoting their de-

I was unable to get a whole lot of information from the band but they were really great on stage. This Canadian newcomer is classified as Rock/Alternative/Punk and you can find the song “Wired” on Spotify.

Next up was a band that really made me feel good about the future of rock music. I imagine it’s really hard to continuously crank out something new that sounds like nothing else. Not the case for this next band. Liily is a teenage, Alternative/Hard Rock/Indie band from Los Angeles. At a young age, they have figured out how to give that fresh, new, exciting sound to their songs all while keeping the jagged-edged rock sound. They really have something going on and I hope they continue doing what they do. Members of the band include, Maxx Morando: drums, Sam De La Torre: guitar, Charlie Anastasis: bass and Dylan Nash: vocals. You can preorder their EP that is set to release on March 8th at www.liilytheband.com.

The Glorious Sons took the stage as the final act of the evening and their large following was pumped! After checking with Club XL, it was confirmed this was a sold out show, which is really awesome to see at a new, local venue! So congratulations Club XL, awesome job! The Glorious Sons are an Alternative Rock band from Kingston, Ontario and kicked off their extensive, month-long, S.O.S. (Sawed Off Shotgun) tour in the U.S. beginning on February 12th. Members include - Brett Emmons: vocals/guitar/harmonica/keys. Jay Emmons: guitar/vocals.

Chris Koster: guitar/vocals. Adam Paquette: drums/vocals and Chris Huot: bass. This show was raw and had a ton of infectious energy. The crowd sang along and many times the band would stop singing and playing and all you could hear was the crowd chanting the words. The song Sawed Off Shotgun gave the band their first #1 in January on the U.S Billboard chart. They recently won the 2018 Juno Award for ‘Best Rock Album of the Year’ with the album ‘Young Beauties and Fools’. According to their website, www.theglorioussons.com, Brett talks about the new album. “It’s basically the story of a 24 year-old kid” says Brett.

“They’re simple songs about alcoholism and the mostly autobiographical story of my life. The whole thing is derived from the thoughts, actions and feelings of a kid who doesn’t really know himself and the consequences of those actions.” I could go on and on about this band and their music but there is a lot more to cover in this months issue. If you want to know more about the band or hear their music, a quick google search will pop up lots of options. They are also on Facebook. Give them a listen or catch one of their shows. Guaranteed to have a great time!

The following weekend proved to be just as busy! The 23rd Millennium Music Conference (MMC for short) kicked off on February 21st at the Park Inn, Mechanicsburg. This conference on Thursday with a welcoming party where performances were held at Blarney’s Pub at the hotel. The next two days offered several great panels during the day and showcased over 250 artists/bands performed at 28 Venues around the Capital Area.

ference happened during our magazine’s deadline, I am running short on space and time to go into the detail I would like. I will be including my run down of the conference and shows in April’s edition. If you missed this years conference and you are a musician or in the music industry, plan to be at next years conference. The panels are informative and influential, the music is great and the interactions with musicians, singers, songwriters, producers, talent scouts and everyone else in the music industry is well worth time.

Keller Williams came to Club XL in Harrisburg and joined up with The Accidentals on February 22nd. They performed together that evening as Keller Williams Accident and performed songs written by Keller. We had already committed to this show before the dates of MMC were released. While we were disappointed we didn’t get to see bands for the Friday showcase around the area, we did get to experience this show and it was a good one! Keller Williams is from Fredricksburg, VA and is considered by many as a one man band. His genre is classified as acoustic dance music but he is so much more than that and I personally think it would be impossible to place him in such a narrow category. He is a very popular musician, singer/songwriter in the jamband world and this is why. He mixes in folk, jazz, funk, reggae, rock and a bit of progressive bluegrass all the while looping the different sounds together to form what sounds like an entire band. In short, he is amazing to watch!

We saw Keller perform in 2012 at The Abbey Bar in Harrisburg and were so impressed by his ability to create the music he does while being just one man. He has released 24 albums since 1994, including his newest one “Sans” that was released in 2018. Seeing The Accidentals with Keller was a very unique experience. The Accidentals are an extremely talented trio out of Michigan. This female–fronted, multi-instrumental power group performs Indie/Folk/Rock. They formed in 2011 as members Katie Larson: electric cello, guitar and vocals and Savannah Buist: violin, guitar, bass, violo, mandolin and vocals. In 2014, Michael Dause joined as their drummer. The bands name ‘The Accidentals” came from a coincidental meeting that Larson and Buist had in high school. The Accidentals also performed as the first showcase band to kick off to the final night of MMC at Blarney’s Pub. More information on The Accidentals will be in April’s article, along with the conference. So, stay tuned!

NATIONALS continued..... that Ryan Adams sent sexually explicit text messages to an underage fan. In response to the claims, guitar pedal and amp companies have dropped their relationships with Adams and the release date for his upcoming album is apparently being pushed back indefinitely. A New York Times article included interviews with his ex-wife Mandy Moore and several other women such as musician Phoebe Bridgers, who detailed controlling and emotionally abusive behavior from the singer/songwriter. Adams’ album Big Colors was scheduled for release April 19 but after sexual misconduct allegations it is on hold indefinitely.

KISS played an intimate show for SiriusXM’s KISS Army Radio (Ch. 30) at the famous Whiskey a Go Go in California. Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine) took the stage, raving, “You wanted the best! And you got the best! The hottest band in the land – KISS!” The band played a dozen classic songs to the 500-capacity West Hollywood club which is significantly smaller than the arenas on their End of the Road Tour. She says the past year has been stressful, but she is thankful her husband is still alive. Lindsey Buckingham’s last performance was Dec. 9 at the Sands Bethlehem Events Center in Bethlehem, Pa. Meanwhile, Fleetwood Mac is in the middle of a 31-date tour averaging $1.8 million per concert and selling an average of 14,000 tickets per show. The tour features original band members Stevie Nicks, Christine McVie, Mick Fleetwood and John McVie along with Neil Finn and Mike Campbell who joined the tour following the departure of Lindsey Buckingham.

Rock legend Roger Waters completed his Us + Them tour, capping a two-decade stretch of global touring that generated more than $835 million in sales from four major worldwide treks. It began in 1999 when he made a return to the concert stage as a solo headliner after a 12-year hiatus from the road.

The tour showcased the hits from his years with Pink Floyd but also included music from his 1992 album, Amused to Death.

Last month’s onslaught of winter storms and iced-up roads took a break to allow musicians and music-minded folks to attend last month’s 23rd annual Millennium Music Conference in Harrisburg. PA Musician was in attendance; check out next month’s issue for our conference recaps.

Despite the aforementioned wintry onslaught, I did get to witness some shows in recent weeks. The Semi-Supervillains made their first area appearance early last month at the U.S. Hotel in Hollidaysburg. A good-sized crowd – including band members’ families journeying in all the way from the group’s founding home base of Weirton, West Virginia – braved less-than-ideal wintry road conditions to see The Semi-Supervillains in action. Vinnie Longhi on lead vocals, guitar and keys, guitarist/singer Nick Longhi, bassist/singer John Pennacchio, guitarist/singer Zach Stadtlander and drummer/singer Tony Marino entertained that crowd over two sets with their high-octane blend of original rock and select covers. Their original song arsenal ranged from fast-firing rockers of the White Stripes/ Jet variety to Beatle-esque numbers and more. Some of their numbers included retro-flavored tunes like the backbeat-geared “Champagne” and “She Put a Spell on Me” with its 1960s McCoys “Hang on Sloopy” vibe, the blue-collar themed “Breaking Me Down” (inspired by Weirton’s declining steel industry) and more. The Semi-Supervillains also did a diverse cover selection, including Paul McCartney & Wings’ “Let Me Roll It,” Badfinger’s “No Matter What,” Jimi Hendrix’s “Hey Joe,” Red Hot Chili Peppers’ “Dani California,” Neil Young’s “Rockin’ in the Free World,” Otis Redding/Black Crowes’ “Hard to Handle,” and – slamming the lid on the night – their rowdy take on The Who’s “My Generation.” These guys swapped instruments and singing duties several times during the night, and Vinnie also did a brief solo acoustic set during the band’s intermission between sets. It was all sharp, energetic and fun, and the crowd enjoyed it, with several folks dancing and grooving along.

McGarvey’s celebrated the arrival of the Chinese Lunar New Year with a special Chinese New Year celebration early last month with This Albatross providing the music. As a packed house of revelers indulged in a Chinese food buffet, This Albatross launched into their party, igniting steady traffic on the dance floor with their blend of rock, pop and country favorites. Despite several members recuperating from cold bug issues, This Albatross brought the energy as they mixed it up with tunes from Joan Jett, Aerosmith, Gretchen Wilson, Stevie Nicks, Madonna, Billy Squier, Roxette, Pat Benatar, Lita Ford, Pink, Shania Twain, Alanis Morisette, Janis Joplin and many more. Singer Autumn Grooves Wagner’s voice was in good form, delivering power and range throughout the night – with Philly Grooves Wagner and Kirk Robison on guitars, PJ Kelly on bass and Shawn Gioiosa on drums providing the instrumental firepower behind her. Highlights included the Aerosmith double-shot of “Sweet Emotion” into “Walk This Way,” the Blondie twin-bill of “Heart of Glass” into “Call Me,” guest appearances by Naildriver frontman Matt Watson and Rich Johnson wielding the bass on Alice In Chains’ “Man in the Box,” and when the crowd shouted for the encore, the ‘Grease’-laden sounds of “You’re the One That I Want” to close the night. This Albatross made sure everybody’s Chinese New Year of the Pig got off to a great start, and a good time was had by all.

After Shallow 9’s scheduled January performance at Altoona’s Four Dees Lounge was scuttled by a winter snowstorm, the group played a special Friday make-up show early last month. Shallow 9 did what they do best, firing up the dance floor party with their lively mix of rock, pop, funk and hip-hop hits. Erika Marino Ankeny and multi-tasking sound overseer Mike Stanley shared and swapped most lead vocal duties, with guitar man Ryan Weaver chiming in on a few numbers. Todd Harshbarger on the drums, Mitch Neuder on the bass and Tucker Landis on guitar helped to keep this party machine churning through the night. Shallow 9 kept the dance floor revelers busy with favorites from Pat Benatar, Amy Winehouse, Cee Lo Green, Britney Spears, Lit, Jimmy Eat World, Panic at the Disco, Outkast, and – of course – the group’s popular signature freewheeling medleys of various funk, dance and hip-hop hits. Shallow 9’s high-octane dance party returns to the Four Dees on March 30.

Fyre recently issued their second CD, 2 Keys, and have

undergone some personnel changes. The updated mach edition of Fyre headlined a hard rock/metal triple-bill at McGarvey’s early last month. Although I missed show openers Dilemma, I arrived in time to see Johnstown power trio Jug as they thundered out their brand of stoner/doom-esque metal. Singer/ guitarist Jake Belz, bassist Robbi Rummell and drummer Ron Schinkle rendered thick, Sabbathy, full-distortion heavy metal originals upon a good-sized audience. Jug stretched each track out to its full intensity, with Jake scorching out solos as he switched between guitars. Robbi stretched out his thick distortion bass lines to transition between songs, and Ron levied booming drum thunder to power it all. Then introducing Awaken From Ruin alumni Logan Yablonski on lead guitar and bassist Corey Colledge to their roster, the updated roster of Fyre finished off the night by showcasing several of the tunes from the 2 Keys CD, and mixing in a few older numbers plus a heated cover of Dio’s “Holy Diver.” Frontman Matt Stoyanoff’s voice was in good order, as he pierced the heavens with his high-flying pipes. Logan and Corey’s contributions were clear, as they gave added edge and aggression to the Fyre attack, powered by Tanner Kaurudar’s drumbeats and fleshed out with Sean Stringer’s rhythm guitar. Fyre did tunes from their previous 3 Ghosts CD such as “No Remorse” and “Madness,” and from the new album did numbers such as “Into the Void” and the set-closer “The One Who Sleeps.” Fyre is already at work on new song material toward their next recording, and it will be interesting to observe their progress with the new blood in their line-up.

I also attended a punk-rocking triple-bill at McGarvey’s in late January. Dave Hates Everything led off the night, before The Snipped took the stage to fire off their brand of “dadcore.” Several of these pun k-rocking dads were under the weather, though, so they did a slightly abbreviated set that featured some of the songs off their Dadcore CD, including “Along These Streets,” “Hand That Feeds,” “Bus,” “All We Know,” “Friday Night” and more. It was still good, fun, high-velocity punk rock that fired up the house. Then lightheartedly proclaiming their brand of punk rock as “a**holekidcore,” The Whatleys fired off a glorious extended set of their crazed brand of punk rock. This turned into a playful, punk rock party, even featuring revelers doing moshpit limbo on the dance floor. The Whatleys – continued on page 18...

Eddie on vocals and bass, Hiro on vocals and guitar, TJ on guitar and backing vocals and Jim on drums – kept it festive with their blend of original song favorites, new tunes and a few select covers. They broke out several from their American Party CD such as “Balloon Drops (Over Confetti Falls),” “History Lesson,” “Broke Down in Murdertown,” “Straight Edge Is Fun (Until You’re 21)” and the set-finisher “CJ Ramone.” Drummer Jim sang the lead on a take on Chuck Berry’s “Johnny B. Goode,” and The Whatleys also did a version of the Misfits’ “Skulls.” The Whatleys provided fast, furious, tongue-in-cheek punk-rocking fun, capping a good fast-firing show. They open for the Toasters at McGarvey’s on March 1.

Johnstown’s Inside Out is gearing up for a new recording and a big show later this year. I caught Inside Out in action during late January at The Arena in State College. Frontman/guitarist Tim Frick, bassist Larz Philip, guitarist Cody Williams and drummer Mark Gindlesperger hammered out their mix of hard-rocking original tunes and rocking favorites. The group broke out a few of their new original songs from their forthcoming five-song EP, including “Burn” and the fist-pumping anthem “Get Up.” They also rocked the house with tunes from Jackyl, Disturbed, Ratt, Van Halen, Fall Out Boy, Motley Crue, P.O.D. and others, before ending the night with their established original “Demons Inside.” Inside Out brought the fury as expected, and drew a few dancers onto the floor in the late going. Inside Out will open for 1980s-era rockers Stryper on May 22 at Jergels in Warrendale (north of Pittsburgh).

A new original music showcase debuted at Doggie’s Pub in State College (formerly the Rathskeller) in late January.

“From the Source with Jason Adams” happens on the last Thursday of each month through spring at Doggie’s. During the debut, host Jason Adams introduced several performers and played several songs himself through the event. The spotlight performer this night was Shalom Dubas. A Floridian who presently calls State College her home base, Shalom did a short acoustic set of her music. Her style blended folk, pop and elements of hip-hop; her style was robust and edgy. She displayed a fast-firing singing style and cadence as she did songs such as the set-opener “Drive By,” “Fatal Attraction,” “Always About Me” and more. Guest sax player Dave Alexander joined in with Shalom on one song.

Other performers this night included Joe Belle, who played a set of folk-based original songs, assisted by percussionist Chris Dilkes. And before I arrived, Jampact’s Steve Treado and Lisa Bock had performed to open the night. Hats off to host Jason for providing a showcase to allow original music artists to shine; the next “From the Source” showcase takes place at Doggie’s Pub on March 28.

Coltt Winter Lepley is a rising performer on central PA stages, and I caught his late January performance at Altoona’s Railroad City Brewing Company. Coltt shared many of his original songs and the inspirations behind them, and mixed in a few acoustic country, folk and rock covers along the way. Coltt is a skilled songsmith and storyteller, and several of his original songs stood out – the corn liquor-inspired “Mama Didn’t Raise No Bitch,” his salute to his mom “A Hero of Mine,” his ode to his girlfriend “I Need You,” the addiction-themed “Amphetamine Latrine,” the crowd clap-along “Sunflower Creek,” “Christian Homeless Man” and his closer “The Bandito.” Coltt’s cover song selection was interesting and diverse, as he did numbers from Steve Earle, Woody Guthrie, White Stripes, Hank Williams Sr., Grateful Dead, Johnny Cash, Jim Croce, Leadbelly, Townes Van Zandt and more. He also enlightened the audience to rising Canadian folk/country artist Colter Wall. Coltt’s voice was in good form, and his conversational presentation broke the ice with the audience early and kept folks around for the duration.

The Blind Liver Trio visited the stage at McGarvey’s last month. Seth Shumaker – alias Blind Liver - played mandolin and sang vocals, with Andy Jenkins singing and playing guitar, and Kim Dull on percussion and vocals. The Blind Liver Trio mixed folksy original tunes and select covers; among the songs I witnessed were versions of Neil Young’s “Powderfinger,” the traditional folk song “The Wind and Rain,” Bill Withers’ “Ain’t No Sunshine,” a convincing folk spin on Hot Chocolate’s disco-era hit “You Sexy Thing” and more. It all sounded good; Andy with his gruff-edged voice, Blind Liver with his mandolin accompaniment and accents, and Kim’s busy rhythms behind it all. Watch for Blind Liver and his trio as they perform around the area.

As always, I was again captivated by Eric’s song selection, as he mixed up lesser-known new and old folk numbers with his own distinctive takes on familiar numbers, while Kirsten accompanied with her solid cello underscore. Some of the songs I witnessed included the John Prine standard “Angel from Montgomery,” Danny O’Keefe’s 1972 hit “Good Time Charlie’s Got the Blues,” James Taylor’s “Fire and Rain,” Elton John’s “Rocket Man,” and a few surprises – his folksy take on Blink 182’s “Dammit,” the Johnny Cash-leaning variation on Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt,” and his male perspective version of Alanis Morisette’’s “You Oughta Know.”

Tragic news struck the regional music scene last month with the shooting death of Carverton singer and founding member Kyle Yorlets outside his Nashville home on February 7. A Carlisle native, Kyle co-founded Carverton in 2014, and the group relocated to Nashville in 2017. Kyle’s surviving bandmates decided to release the group’s new album, Chasing Sounds, last month as a celebration of Kyle’s legacy.

News and notes… Another area musician has punched his ticket to appear on NBC Television’s talent program “The Voice.” An Altoona native now living in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Jimmy Mowery was selected to be a contestant on “The Voice” late last month, and selected Adam Levine to be his coach…Heaven Tonite is reuniting again, but this time resurrecting their popular Killer Queen tribute show; their Q: The Music of Queen will take the stage on March 1 at 120 Pub & Grub in Clearfield, and on March 2 at Blarney’s Deck Stage at The Park Inn in Mechanicsburg…Altoona’s Greenbean Coffee House and Family Services Incorporated present “Singing for Survivors on March 8 at Altoona’s Bavarian Aid Society; performing will be Michelle Barnes, Asbury Lane, This Albatross and Shallow 9, with proceeds helping provide services to Blair County survivors of domestic abuse and sexual violence…The Steve Forgas Memorial Jam takes place March 22 at Slammin’ Sam’s in Johnstown, and will feature the bands Octane, Kindred Fury and Blue Collar Fate; proceeds help the surviving family of Steve, an area musician who passed away in November…

Johnstown-based singer and songwriter Dan Stonerook has finished work on a new album, Stable Genius, which is slated for a spring release; in addition, Dan has assembled a full band, Wounded Moose, that will debut next month…Pensive Fear, the project brainchild of Altoona-based guitarist Tom Brown, will release a new album later this year; Code Name: Anaconda, Order in the Strike will feature new Pensive Fear originals plus remakes of four songs from Tom’s 1980s metal band Anaconda…

The McCaulley Project has disbanded, with members moving on to new projects…Bassist Nick Quinn is stepping away from full-time duties with Pittsburgh’s Lovebettie and Willow Hill, to devote more time to his new role of being a father…Dave Smith, the longtime singer for Pittsburgh-based Rush tribute Distant Signals, parted ways with the group last month due to health reasons; the group announced Mark Bailey as his replacement… And we at PA Musician express speedy get well wishes to Jim Donovan. MISS MELANIE & THE VALLEY RATS – MISS MELANIE & THE VALLEY RATS (no label) For their fifth CD, Happy Valley blues, soul and groove favorites Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats have gone for broke and made a 23-track, 75-minute-plus self-titled album. The group mixes it up between old and new songs, and live and studio tracks, along the way introducing a few new original numbers plus live takes and updated arrangements on many established tunes from their prior albums.

Front and center continues to be “Miss Melanie” Morrison

Zeigler, who radiates constant joy through her potent, soaring voice. Her singing again lifts listeners as she displays her soulful and dynamic range between reserved and quiet soul-searching to boisterous, sky-reaching bursts of glee. Guitar master Mark Ross provides tasteful licks throughout the album, while Rev James Harton fleshes out the sound with flavorful organ and accordion fills. Chris Coyne delivers just the right drum touch behind it all, and even shows his kazoo skills on the group’s live rendition of Stevie Wonder’s hit “For Once In My Life,” just one of many highlights here. Among the new original songs are two social commentary pieces, “I’ll Be Damned” and “Demons,” which both address issues of racism and prejudice. The Rev’s creeping organ backdrop adds a sinister touch to the shadowy mood on the live new original track “Witch & She-Devil.” Other highlights include the group’s treatments of Bob Dylan’s “To Make You Feel My Love,” British soul singer James Hunter’s “’Til Your Fool Comes Home” and Charles Bradley’s “Strictly

Reserved for You.” And Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats offer new live versions on past favorites such as the playful opener “Whiskey & Me,” “Shine,” “Let’s Ride,” “If I Had My Druthers,” “Tell Me Where It’s At,” “You’re All I Got,” plus new renditions of Hank Williams’ “Cold, Cold Heart,” the Beatles’ “Help” and another reverent take on “Amazing Grace” to nicely cap the album. The performances from Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats plus special guests Rene Witzke on bass and Matt Zelenz on drums exude quality, skill and feeling. All of the musicians serve the songs with their contributions, never becoming self-indulgent or overplaying their respective roles; thus helping this album to flow smoothly and seamlessly from start to end.

The result is an album jam-packed with top-notch, blues-rooted music, which offers a perfect primer for those who have never explored Miss Melanie & the Valley Rats before. (The CD can be obtained through online music retailers, or through the group’s website, www.missmelanieandthevalleyrats.com.)

THE SNIPPED – #dadcore (no label) What happens when four longtime stalwarts of the west-central PA punk rock scene – who happen to be dads – get together to make music? They create “dadcore,” which is the title of the first full-length album for Altoona area punk-rocking patriarchs The Snipped. Singer/gui-

tarist (Mikey) Wax, lead guitarist/singer Jeff Reid, bassist/ singer Rik Golden (with additional bass contributions from Brock Holland) and drummer Justin Burket fire off ten swift, high-velocity punk-fueled anthems, while contemplating a few issues of modern-day fa-

therhood. The rhythms explode, crash and slam, and Wax sings, barks and snarls with ample spit and rage. With its extended intro, the leadoff barrage “Along These Streets” is a statement of survival and perseverance through this thing called life, setting the table for the rest of the album. The group rants about appreciation, respect and standing one’s ground on “Hand That Feeds” and the speedbanger “Smug,” makes sense of today’s crazy world on “All We Know,” and weathers life’s daily pressures on “Weight of the World.” This group of dads unleashes musical rush-hour road rage at frequent-stopping school buses on “Bus.” And they offer reflection on two numbers, resolving to live every moment and give all on “Waste My Time,” and pondering carefree younger years and the passage of time on the album-closing “Friday Night.” Recorded, mixed and mastered by Rik at his own Golden Records, #dadcore sounds full

and forceful, and lets the group’s velocity, vigor and vinegar do the talking. While other dads mow the lawn or clean out the basement to unwind from the rigors of domesticated life, The Snipped create vibrant punk rock, and #dadcore offers exciting, pedal-to-the-metal aggression and attitude. COLEMAN RIGG – COLEMAN RIGG EP (no label) A Bellefonte native who now calls Philadelphia his home base, Coleman Rigg mixes elements of old and new on his six-song, self-titled debut EP. Displaying a powerful, clear singing voice with authority and range, Coleman crafts a sound that blends early rock’n’roll and rockabilly flavors with an alternative and indie-rock edge. His bold singing style at times hints at classic Elvis Presley and Roy Orbison, while his raw, grungy guitar tones and beefy arrangements sound contemporary and edgy. Coleman sings of personal and relationship themes; on the rockabilly-driven disc-opener “Just a Man,” he struggles to define himself in a world where breadwinner duties compete with individuality, and he questions a woman’s confusing perceptions on “Puzzled at Your Door.” “Block” suggests that the real individual is concealed behind the face that others see. Worries about another suitor provide the theme of the gradually-building rocker “Goodnight,” while absence makes the heart grow fonder on the stripped-down ballad “Missed You Tonight.” And Coleman sings of pride before the fall on the disc-closing “All Smiles.”

With Jesse Hall providing drums and backing vocals, Coleman’s voice shines front and center throughout the disc, and his guitar and bass accompaniment provide continuity throughout the set.

Recorded and mixed by Coleman at his home in Philadelphia, this EP sounds balanced and full, with a cavernous echo evoking a 1950s early rock’n’roll mood. Coleman Rigg displays his unique sound and musical world on his self-titled EP, introducing himself as an innovative singer and songwriter worth keeping an eye on.
