Welcome back readers and wouldn’t you know, just like that Fall is here. It didn’t take mother nature long to let us know that cold weather is on the way. With the temps dropping and the leaves falling its time to start hitting all the indoor spots for your local music fix. As if the cold weather wasn’t enough to bum you out, we also got hit with some sour news in the way of some local venues closing up. Yes, Cliff’s Underground has closed in a rather sudden fashion. Shortly after that happened rumors of another local establishment’s closing started to surface. Blarney’s, aka Park Inn, aka Wanda’s (as I like to remember it) is soon to follow. The word on the street is that it will be knocked down in favor of another strip mall. I for one could live without another Family Dollar, Target, or whatever else might fill the space. The one thing, no matter what the name was, for years Park Inn/ Blarney’s along with Cliff’s/Gullifty’s were always a place you could count on for supporting local music. So yes, an end of an era is approaching but hopefully someone will see the need and fill the void that we will all be feeling. Blarney’s has a lot planned for their last month of operation in October so please check out the ad and make your plans to get out and enjoy a show. They start the month out with a benefit with an amazing day of music. Great local bands are on the calendar the rest of the month including; Hot Mess, Hometown Strangers, Adrian Blitzer, Whiskey on the Rocks, Gas Station Disco, Garret Shultz, Smooth Like Clyde, Chapel Hill, Dirt Cheap, Escape and more as they go out with a BANG! We at PA Musician Magazine would like to thank everyone at Blarney’s for the years of support through advertising with us and also for supporting the local music scene including the MMC. God Speed Wanda’s, we will miss you. On the other side of coin we would like to welcome The Warwick Hotel to our pages. You can find the ad on the next page with the list of bands/artist who will be performing throughout October. They have been serving guest since the 1790’s and have a deep history of catering to Hummelstown’s needs. This month you can catch Brett Alexander, Heart and Soul, Dan Jamison, Element 22, Josh Tweedy and many more. Along with the regular Friday and Saturday Night Live music (7pm-10pm), they are also doing open mic nights every first and third Wednesday of the month hosted by Chuck Britton. Throw in Taco & Trivia with karaoke nights on Tuesdays and you have a little something for everyone as far as music and food is concerned. It doesn’t stop there for foodies, be sure to check out all the other weekly specials which will be sure to get your juices flowing. Keep your eyes out for more info on”The Wick” and in the meantime check it out for yourself and meet up with some friends for fine food and music In other local news, downtown Mechanicsburg shop, Noteworthy Guitars will be moving locations. Don’t worry nothing to fear, Ed is simply moving 4 doors down (no this is not a new band). Ed will be making the move at the end of the month and hopes to be in the new store for November. The new shop will offer more room along with a better window display for passer bys on the street. To help with the move he will be holding a, “We Are Moving Sale!” All guitars and amps will be heavily discounted throughout the month of October so get to Noteworthy Guitars and check out the awesome deals! Tell him Josh sent ya! Now let’s talk about last month’s music. Early in the month I headed down to the Chameleon Club in Lancaster for a heavy hitting night of music headlined by Defiant. Kudos to Chameleon Club and Defiant for hooking up and booking an awesome night of local music. Once I saw the lineup forming I knew it was a must attend event. We missed the first band Audiobox out of Williamsport but did get to talk to the guys a bit. Super fun to hang with and on my short list of bands to see in the future. Voice the Chaos was just taking stage when we rolled in and instantly got my attention. They started off heavy and just never quit. Great band, high energy with some heavy riffs. Next was Gallowglas “a furious metal band out of York PA” as their facebook page states. They lived up to the hype and kept the music coming hitting some super heavy tunes. The lead singer really took command of the crowd and got them all into it. Great job by Gallowglas. Fourth on the bill was the mighty Suicide Puppets. Do yourself a favor and go see a show. These guys have
Pennsylvania Musician Magazine
been at it for years and are really picking up steam. They always have new material and are constantly upping the game with new songs. After opening for Stabbing Westward the following night doors are really starting to creep open for them. Its not easy in the local music scene to make it happen with such an original act but with hard work and dedication comes the rewards. Stay tuned for more Suicide Puppets news coming soon. Speaking of hard work and rewards lets hear it for Defiant! I haven’t seen a band working as hard as these guys all year. Constantly getting new shows all over the place, selling tickets everyday to make sure the fans are there, booking other local bands to help support the shows. I mean people, if you’re going to complain about not having any gigs or places to play take a note from these guys. Get out there and find the spots, do some traveling, talk to the other local bands. Self promoting is a hard gig but you are the best asset your band has. Only you can give it the effort it needs to get the ball rolling. The hard work has really paid off for Defiant in the last year and it shows in the music. The guys killed it and with the new cd release (which has been on repeat for the last month in the truck) there is no stopping these guys. Congrats and thanks Defiant an awesome night of music. Later in the month I headed out to XL Live for the Supersuckers “Evil Powers Tour”! It was a Thursday night so attendance seemed a little weak but that meant everyone that did venture out got an awesome treat with some up close and personal action. The Supersuckers, along with The Hangmen both put on an amazing show and if you were at home watching “Office” reruns on Netflix then too bad for you. I know midweek shows are tuff but this one was a great excuse to take off Friday! The big standout for the night for me was the opening act, The Bad Luck Charms. I’ve known drummer Dave Brooks for years and he is always in about 5-6 different projects it seems. He is one of those guys who is in all sorts of bands playing all sorts of roles from drummer to singer to uke to guitar. He is a very talented guy and the rest of the band was right up there with him. They started out fast and never quit. With little to no break in between songs, The Bad Luck Charms got the crowd moving and really did a great job of warming up the room for the main show. You can check them out on facebook @thebadluckcharms wish I knew when they were playing next but you will just have to stalk them on facebook to find out. I do know that one of Dave’s other bands, Dirt Road Redemption is opening up for local legends, The Martini Bros. at River City on October 5th. The Supersuckers show kicked off our vacation week which started in Las Vegas a few days later, where we were treated to a free Kenny Wayne Shepherd show right outside our hotel on Fremont Street. What an amazing guitar player. A lot of Stevie Ray Vaughan in his playing and it was a great way to start our trip. One night in Vegas was enough for me and then we headed out onto the open road for a week long road trip. I chocked a lot of stuff off the bucket list and had an amazing time out in the wilds of Utah, Arizona, and Nevada. If you have never ventured out west, just make it happen. It was crazy dusty and super windy. We saw so many natural wonders and beat the piss out of our rental jeep. Great memories that will last a lifetime. We did our own golden circle route and added some other destinations along the way. One spot was Moab, I hope to make it back someday to spend more time there. Looks like a sweet place to catch some live music, along with going off roading, mountain biking, canoeing, you name it Moab has it. Get out there soon because the place is blowing up and will soon be overpowered with people. The once small town is now overrun by tourist year round and is the new place to go for your adventure vacation. Speaking of the west, the country outlaw Bob Randall has been making waves with a recent appearance on Fox 56 news. They did a great piece on Bob and how he is keeping his music dream alive at the age of 74; along with a new Cd release, and an induction, later this month, into the New York State Country Music Hall of Fame has kept him pretty busy. Be sure to check out his show schedule on page 2, along with a review of his Cd further back in this issue. You can find his Cd on all major streaming platforms or get one at a show from the man himself. Well that’s it for this month get out there and enjoy your haunted month of October! Make way for scary outfits and girls dressed in less then they wear to Walmart! Its a great month for music and fun. If you would like to get in on the fun that is the PA Musician Magazine please contact me now and find out how easy it is to start promoting your band or business in our pages. email me at Joshnoll@pamusician.net or call 717-636-4203. OUT ‘n’ ABOUT
Kipona, but the sounds of The Second Time Thru really caught my ear. They were playing on the State Street Stage, I was also mesmerized by the Bubble Show, they were making bubbles up to 70 feet high with their fancy gadgets. It was a perfect combo. The State Street Stage is a cool little ampitheatre where there is By Rachel Rocks plenty of built in seating or people could also bring their own chairs. Second Time Thru were playing an acoustic version of all Rocktober has arrived! Time for rock ’n’ roll and hoodies! Even of your favorite classics. It was a cool twist to your typical classic though I love all of the beautiful seasons of PA, I’d have to say rock, plus all the vocalists had strong voices to help complete there is something special about slipping on a nice, big, fluffy their acoustic style. The next weekend Harrisburg had an awesome opportunity to hoodie! And of course we all know how much I love some good see The Sugarhill Gang for their 40th Anniversary Tour of “Rapol’ rock n’ roll! This month started out on Labor Day at the Kipona Festival per’s Delight” at XL Live. I know there are plenty of youngins in Harrisburg. This was the 103rd year of the Kipona. I remem- out there who have never heard of the Sugarhill Gang, but do ber going to Kipona when I was super young and sitting on the yourselves a favor and google them. “Rapper’s Delight was the banks of the Susquehanna to watch the fireworks and of course first rap single to become a Top 40 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. we were there to see the live music too! Kipona has always been It helped introduce a wide range of people to sounds of hip-hop a great place to eat lots of food and hear various music throughout music. The Sugarhill Gang put on one heck of a live performance the festival. I unfortunately didn’t have a lot of time to be at the at XL Live. It was awesome to hear them between songs talking about how music is what brings people together, they https://www.facebook.com/stillsmokinbandpa were trying to spread the word to spread love not hate. The Southern Rock Band from Central PA room was filled with people With former members from SLUT BROTHERS, ROCK CANDY, and SMOKIN’ GUNNZ of multiple race and ages just dancing, singing along and having a great time! I’ve said it before but you really need to pay close attention to all of the venues around us, they all get amazing acts, from all over the US and beyond, maybe you never heard of them before, but Google them, I’d almost guarantee you, you will be imUPCOMING DATES: pressed. 10/5- Union House Taproom & Livery, After The Sugarhill Gang Richland, PA we zoomed over to Blarney’s BOOKINGS: 11/23- Tourist Inn, Hallam, PA for the last set of Calling Off (717) 758-3503 12/31- Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie 2226 Doug. It’s awesome watching stillsmokinbandpa@gmail.com their schedule filling up with Littlestown, PA
Sugarhill Gang at XL LIVE photo by Rachel Rocks more venues! Calling Off Doug has been making their mark on the area as one of most entertaining party bands out there. They have so much vocal versatility with so many lead singers in their band, but even when they are not mixing things up Stephanie has such a crazy amazing range she can sing just about anything! If you haven’t checked out Calling Off Doug yet, do yourself a favor and check out their schedule and get out there to see them soon! The next night I headed over to Johnny Joe’s for Fell From Zero. It’s hard to believe I only get a chance to see these guys about once a year! I wish my life wouldn’t be so crazy, but sometimes it just is! Fell From Zero plays more modern rock songs, and even turns songs that aren’t regularly rock songs into rock songs with their own twists and turns! By the way, Happy 5th Year Anniversary to Fell From Zero! It’s hard to believe these guys have been rockin’ around the midstate for the past 5 years! If I’m not mistaken they’ve also had the same line-up for 5 years! That is impressive!! Fell From Zero doesn’t play a lot of shows, so make sure and check out their schedule in the DenMother Music ad, and get out there and support them, you won’t be disappointed! The following weekend I headed over the mountains and through the woods to the 6th Annual Fall Jam. This is a great event hosted by Bald Rob. I’ve heard a lot about it, and since it was absolutely amazing outside I decided to check it out. After hearing a little teaser of the Breaking Benjamin songs at the Fell From Zero show I was glad I made it in time to hear Bob Patterson singing in his Breaking Benjamin tribute band, Next to continued on pg 9..

Nothing at the Fall Jam. I always say I think it takes some serious skill to be a tribute band. There is a lot of pressure when everyone knows all of the words and exactly how each part is supposed to sound. I was amazed at how perfectly they played all of their big hits. I’ve been wanting to see Next to Nothing a while now, and I’m so glad I finally did. Y2Kids took the stage next. I never even heard of these guys, but was pleasantly surprised. All of their songs are from the 2000s. So many bands are playing Classic Rock, not too many take the time to learn the newer songs, let alone have a full show of new music. It was cool to see a generally younger crowd dancing and singing along. This is another project Ed Allison is involved in. I saw a Facebook post from him that he has a Saturday Off, does anyone need a solo, duo, full band, DJ.. anything. The guy is everywhere and is always willing to play something! Pretty awesome seeing his drive and desire to push music any way he can, and he’s good at it! Another band I’ve been trying to see for a little while now, Sonic Highway took the stage next. Talk about a guy with a million bands/projects, Steve Junkins and Mitch Hood are on guitars, Tony Blauch is on the kit, Jeff Lawrence on bass, and it was awesome seeing the lungs of Trevor Schubert on lead vocals, I’ve missed hearing him sing! Sonic Highway is a Foo Fighters tribute band, and they also killed it! They were definitely making the Foo Fighters proud! Tony was banging those drums so hard he literally had steam pouring off of him! Kate, Jeff’s wife, made a special appearance and sang “From Can to Can’t” it was quite a surprise, and she did Bob Patterson/ an amazing job! It was super Next to Nothing awesome seeing the hubby and photo by Rachel Rocks continued on pg 10....

Out & About continued...
wife on the stage together. Hopefully I can catch Sonic Highway again soon! I was very excited to see Observe the 93rd on the stage again. They were the only original band of the night. It was awesome to see so many OT93 fans out in their gear, ready to support these guys. I love their new CD “Alive”, and it’s always even better when you see them rockin’ their songs live! Even though the tribute bands did a crazy good job, there is something about seeing a band playing their originals! Especially when they have so many fans singing every song note for note! The last band of the night was the Rad Hot Chili Peppers. In case you couldn’t figure it out they are a Red Hot Chili Peppers tribute band. I guess they’ve played the Fall Jam before and a lot of people were excited to see them play again. I don’t know too many songs by Red Hot Chili Peppers, but everyone seemed to be loving them. Overall the Fall Jam was a blast featuring 22 bands across 2-stages! Plus vendors, cornhole tournament, food, wine sampling and so much more! I was bummed I couldn’t come back for Day 2 on Saturday, but next year I plan on staying all weekend at Deer Run Camping Resort to enjoy the festivities! Next up was another one of those super sneaky, posted everywhere, Thursday night shows when Sebastian Bach came to XL Live. Sebastian Bach was the lead singer for Skid Row just in case people weren’t aware. He definitely didn’t disappoint! What a show!! This was his 30th Anniversary tour 1989-2019 and he performed the first record “Skid Row” in its entirety! Plus he had so much fun playing for us that he couldn’t resist and played a few extra songs. It was pretty hilarious when he said, “Whose idea was it to play a whole night of songs I sang 30 years ago! There’s a big difference between 19 and 51!” He might be 51, but age is just a number.. he can still rock like he’s 18! It was very cool how they had a slide show of old pictures playing behind him during the show. It was a great show, it was totally worth staying out late on a school night! The next weekend started with a special trip down to Racehorse Tavern for Willow Hill. Jim has supported Lovebettie/Willow Hill for years and he considers them part of the family. He’s always promoting them and harassing me every time they come to town to come down and check them out. I’m so glad I finally did! Many years ago, like at least 10 or so, at the Millennium Music Conference, I met the band Lovebettie. For probably close to 10 years they toured all over the US and beyond and had all kinds of amazing opportunities like playing Sturgis along side bands Queensryche and The Cult, being direct support for Pat Benetar and Rick Springfield, and so much more. Two of the members Alexandra and C.T. become husband and wife and the duo started writing more songs together, and eventually realized they wanted to try playing a little bit of country, and hence only for about a year or so ago, Willow Hill was born. They are getting a lot of play time in Europe, so this past Sunday they were heading over to Europe for the 2nd time, and this time they are on a 25 day tour! Willow Hill is truly amazing with Ali’s soulful voice and C.T.’s crazy guitar riffs! You really should check them out. They try to make an appearance at Racehorse Tavern every couple of months at least, so make sure and keep an eye on Racehorse’s schedule and get out there and support them. In the meantime, you can check out their website, willowhillfamilytree.com, where they are releasing a new song at least once a month! They are definitely a busy duo, that’s for sure! The last, but definitely not least band of the month is Six Bar Break. I took another voyage over to the Fredericksburg Eagle Hotel for a rockin’ good time! It’s actually been quite a while since I heard the full band rockin’ out in all of their glory! When I arrived Six Bar Break had quite the dancing duo helping to keep everyone entertained! For a little while they even had a 2nd guitar player in the band, it might’ve been an air guitar, but man he was amazing! Halfway through the night a local wedding reception ended and the after party came to the Hotel. It was awesome to see so many people come in to the dining room to sit back and enjoy the music. Even though they tried requesting covers they seemed to appreciate the fact that Six Bar Break is an original band, and they were even commenting how much they liked their music and the crowd kept growing all the way til the end of the night. It’s always awesome seeing an original band get so much love, and Six Bar Break definitely deserves it! You can check out videos, music, and their next gig dates on their website at www. sixbarbreak.com. So many amazing shows this month and every month!! One big show not to miss is the Rebels For a Cause Benefit at Blarney’s. It is a benefit supporting a lot of great friends who are fighting against Cancer and other medical issues that have the bills continued on next page...

NATIONALS By Eric Hoffman
Greetings Rockers ’N’ Rollers! Last month began with legendary punk band Social Distortion bringing their 40th anniversary tour to Lancaster’s Freedom Hall. The band blazed through a 50-minute set (there was no encore) consisting of 13 songs, including hits “Bad Luck,” “Cold Feelings” and “Story of my Life.” Mike Ness and company have visited the mid-state many times over the years playing Lancaster’s Chameleon and the infamous Harrisburg Club Met show. My thanks to Brandon at Chameleon Club for making this concert possible. Chameleon Club has been doing a great job bringing larger shows to Freedom Hall over the years including; Flogging Molly, Pop Evil, Sevendust, Skillet, Dropkick Murphys, Primus, Clutch, Sum 41, Sublime and Halestorm. A show highlight of the month was seeing Future Islands perform twice in three days. The Baltimore-based synthpop band played the annual Make The World Better festival at Philadelphia’s Dell Music Center on September 5th and then a free surprise show at Baltimore’s Union Craft Brewery on September 7th. Future Islands continue to be one of the best live acts performing today, primarily in part to the eccentric antics of lead singer Sam Herring. The band has 5 studio albums in their 13year history and have been recently performing sporadic concerts. Harrisburg’s XL Live continues to bring great National acts to the area with notable shows: The Supersuckers played on September 12th with The Hangmen and Bad Luck Charms. A great rock ’n’ roll event in which LA’s Hangmen stole the show. The Hangmen established nearly 33 years ago and continue as a quartet with lead singer Bryan Small and his lurid love songs with unsentimental blasts. Their trademark dual-guitar attack combines the classic-rock drive of the Rolling Stones and AC/ DC with the hard-charging swagger of Johnny Thunders’ Heartbreakers and the sinister allure of the Cramps. I truly can’t wait for The Hangmen’s next tour. XL Live also brought upcoming acoustic folk artist, JS Ondara. The 27-year old musician from Nairobi, Kenya received a green card and moved to Minneapolis nearly 7 years ago. This past February he released his remarkable debut album, Tales of America, which is gaining huge
The Hangmen
recognition with songs like “Saying Goodbye” and “American Dream” It was a very moving performance full of emotion and true artistry. On a side note, Ondara cites Bob Dylan as his musical hero, which is why he chose to live in Minnesota and why he wears his signature fedora. Lastly, iconic punk-rockers Rancid
brought their East Bay ska-punk music to the East Coast with a show at Baltimore’s MECU Pavilion on September 21st. The tour also featured Pennywise and Suicidal Tendencies with The Aquabats and Angel Du$t on select dates. While legendary punk bands like The Clash, Ramones and Tim Armstrong of Rancid New York Dolls may all be gone, Rancid continues to carry the torch and played their classic songs including “Roots Radicals,” “Time Bomb” and “Ruby Soho.” The band just finished their current tour but return for a one-off show on October 19th opening for The Misfits at NYC Madison Square Garden. NATIONAL NEWS: Metallica may be considered the biggest all-time touring band. The numbers speak for themselves: Metallica sold nearly 22.1 million total tickets and grossed some $1.4 billion since 1982, dwarfing huge rock bands of the era including AC/DC (14.3 million tickets) and Ozzy Osbourne (10 million,13.2 if counting Ozzy plus Black Sabbath). The closest competitor on dollars grossed is Guns ’N’ Roses, with nearly $800 million grossed largely thanks to the band’s mammoth “Not In This Lifetime” reunion tour. After 38 years, Metallica’s statistics puts them in select company, just behind U2 – which until recently held the all-time touring record on its “360” run. The band show no signs of slowing down joked original drummer Lars Ulrich, “I keep thinking and forcing myself to think all our best years are still ahead of us ‘What’s your favorite record?’ It’s the next one, the one we haven’t recorded yet.” Ric Ocasek, founding member and frontman of Rock and Roll Hall Of Famers The Cars, was found dead Sept. 15 in his New York City home. He was 75. Police reportedly received a call at around 4 p.m. to Ocasek’s townhouse and he was pronounced dead at the scene. Ocasek and The Cars were inducted in 2018 to the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame for a career that included 13 Top 40 singles, and Ocasek moved on to a successful career as a producer after The Cars broke up in the late 1980s. He was currently separated from wife Paulina Porzikova, a former supermodel he met on the set of the video shoot for “Drive” in 1984. Eddie Money, known for hits including “Two Tickets To Paradise,” “Baby Hold On” and “Take Me Home Tonight,” died on September 13th after battling stage 4 esophageal cancer. A statement from the family said he died peacefully in Los Angeles. He was 70. The husky-voiced, blue collar performer also starred in a reality TV show on AXS TV network called “Real Money” that debuted in April 2018. He continued to tour throughout his life, averaging 2,113 tickets sold over shows in the last three years. The family statement read in part, “It is with heavy hearts that we say goodbye to our loving husband and father. We cannot imagine our world without him. We are grateful that he will live on forever through his music.” Next month, Bob Dylan, will be touring the U.S. with more than two dozen dates booked coast to coast. Dylan broke the news to fans with a simple post on his website proclaiming “Bob
Dylan and his Band are touring the U.S. this fall! Tickets go on sale starting this Friday, September 13th! More shows to be announced!” As for the setlist for the fall tour, that’s anyone’s guess. It’s likely he might play some of his standout tunes like “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right,” “Blowin’ in the Wind” or “Maggie’s Farm.” Dates include: Nov. 12th, 2019 – Baltimore, Md., University of Maryland Baltimore County - UMBC Event Center. Nov. 15th, 2019 – University Park, Pa., Pennsylvania State University - Eisenhower Auditorium and Nov. 21st, 2019 – The Met Philadelphia, Pa., Pennsylvania. Green Day, Fall Out Boy and Weezer are hitting stadiums together next year on the “Hella Mega Tour.” Presented by Harley-Davidson, the trek kicks off in Europe followed by the 20city North American leg, including Hersheypark Stadium on Aug 13th and Philadelphia’s Citizens Bank Park on Aug 29th. The Interrupters will appear as special guest on the tour. Fivetime Grammy Award-winning Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees Green Day unleashed their brand new single “Father Of All…,” which is the lead track on their forthcoming 13th studio album of the same name, out Feb. 7th. Ed Sheeran sets the all time touring record. Consisting of 893 days and 255 shows with a staggering 8.9 million tickets sold and a massive gross of $775.6 million – the most ever by any tour. On average, Sheeran played a stadium or arena twice a week for two and a half years. Sheeran surpassed U2’s eightyear record gross of $735.3 million on the “360 Tour,” which ran from February 2009 through July 2011. The final stop of his record-breaking “Divide Tour” was in his home county of Sussex, England. He called the moment “bittersweat” and said “this is my last gig for probably 18 months.” The 28-year-old prodigiously talented musician, known for songs “Shape of You” and “Perfect” performs solo and has the ability to bring millions of transfixed fans singing in unison in a way unmatched by any artist. Tool announced a fall tour and the release of its long-awaited, fifth full-length album, Fear Inoculum, (Aug 30). The six-week trek visits Philadelphia’s Wells Fargo Center on November 18th and Washington DC Capital One Arena on November 25th. Maynard James Keenan and the band sell an average of 14,000 tickets and gross more than $1 million per show. Fear Inoculum, is Tool’s first studio effort since 2006’s 10,000 Days. The hard rock band formed in 1990 and has four multi-platinum albums to its credit and has won three Grammy Awards. UPCOMING SHOWS: The Ocean Blue - Washington DC Union Stage Oct 4. The Cadillac Cats Keeping the Blues Alive & Well The Cadillac Cats are a five-piece band based out of Williamsport, that are keeping “The Blues” alive and well, delivering high energy, foot stomping Blues at every show! In 2014 Blair Mitcheltree was competing down at the International Blues Challenge as a solo acoustic artist, and he was mesmerized by all of the Blues bands, so he decided he wanted to start up his own band when he got back home. With plenty of time to think on the long drive home from Memphis he came up with the name The Cadillac Cats, now he just needed to find his band members. Luckily, Blair was in blues bands before, so he reached out to his friend Dave Thompson and asked if he’d come over and help audition singers for his new project. Unfortunately, none of singers stuck, but the auditions gave Dave the itch to get back in a band, and Blair was thrilled to have “Diamond” Dave Thompson as part of the band, wailing away on the harmonica.
Article & photos by Rachel Rocks allows the music to flow through their souls uniting them as one, and isn’t that what true blues is all about.
They play classic hits like “Boom Boom” and “Little By Little”, and they also play some great originals like “Billtown Boogie, and “The Cadillac Swing” that is sure to get you up and dancing! The Cadillac Cats don’t really use a strict setlist, they refer to their setlist more as a ‘Song Bag’ that they pull from depending on the mood of the crowd. They are blessed to have two great singers in the band. Becky covers most of the lead vocals, but Dave also steps up to the mic and belts out a song or two himself at times. It really helps to add to the diversity of the band. They have great communication on and off the stage so it is
of their 1st album release! Since they’ve been playing solidly for the past three years, they’ve really had some amazing opportunities to play some cool gigs and open for some fantastic musicians. They play most of their gigs now in the Williamsport area, but they are also willing to travel. They would love to get into the Fairs and Festivals circuit and play some bigger shows. They are extremely grateful to the Billtown Blues Association for including them in their regular events, and just for supporting them as a band, creating venues in the area, and really for supporting all musicians throughout the area and beyond. They do have some shows coming up, every Thursday, from 8-10pm,
A few days later Blair was hosting an Open Mic and Becky Wool asked him if he would play for her while she sang a song or two. They were a perfect fit, and a week later, Becky was singing in her 1st gig as the third member of The Cadillac Cats. Blair also got lucky and stumbled upon Urie Kline. When Urie auditioned it was another perfect match. Urie has been studying percussion all over the world, and he currently plays in multiple bands, and even the area symphonies, but he truly loves playing the Blues, so he was thrilled to be part of this project! Their newest member on bass is Garrett Gaetano. Again, it’s good to know people, while Blair was at the Tuesday Blues Jam at the Finish Line Lounge, he started asking some other blues musicians about any bass players looking for a band and Gabe Stillman and Collin Beatty both highly recommended Garrett Gaetano. This isn’t Garrett’s 1st blues band, he was in a youth blues band in 2012 that also got him a trip down to Memphis for the International Blues Challenge. He was very excited to audition for another Blues band. At their 1st rehearsal they started jamming and they couldn’t stop! After one night and 9 or so songs they knew he was just what they were looking for, and a week later he also had his 1st gig as an official Cadillac Cat. The Cadillac Cats take playing the Blues very seriously. It is important to all of them to play traditional Blues or Old Fashioned Blues. Dave is also a “scholar” of the blues, his historical knowledge of the Blues is intense. If something isn’t right, he lets them know, and explains the history behind the song. It really helps the whole band come together and realize the true meaning and desires of the original artists were having when they created the song, and it helps them perfect their cover of the songs even more. Don’t worry though, even though they are playing the music style as authentically as possible there is still plenty of the improv blues guitar riffs, harp blowing, bass lines, and drum solos. For how professional they are in perfecting their music, they also know how to let loose, and have some real foot stomping good times playing the blues! The musical chemistry of The Cadillac Cats October, 2019

“The Cadillac Cats delivering high energy, foot stomping Blues at every show!”
very easy for them to fly more from the cuff and keep their show diverse and very high energy! They don’t map out their whole show because they want to keep it fresh and exciting for not only their fans but for themselves as well.
As mentioned, they do play a few originals, and they will hopefully keep creating new ones as time goes on. They are currently in the studio working on their first original album. They have 6 out of 10 songs recorded already, so hopefully they will have an album to be release soon. Blair is the one who usually gets the originals started with a melody and some lyrics. Then he brings it to practice and they all watch it come to life. Everybody writes their own sections. Becky has an amazing range in her vocals, and she loves songs that really let her use her powerhouse vocals, but yet she also likes a good growl too! I’ve been told it’s fun listening to Becky sing and hearing her bring out her inner Etta James! It really helps that they have similar tastes in music because then their songs move more into the same direction until they finally have an amazing original song. I know I will definitely be keeping a close eye on The Cadillac Cats in anticipation Pennsylvania Musician Magazine
they host an Open Mic at the Trail Inn in Cogan Station. Being in a band wouldn’t be as much fun without some fans, and The Cadillac Cats have amazing support from even more amazing fans! They are so blessed to have so many friends that love the blues as much as they do, and come out and support them night after night. If you like to get down and Boogie to some Blues, this is the band for you!! To get them booked at your venue, give Blair a call at 570-651-5014. To check out their schedule, watch some videos, or just listen to some great songs, you can find them at Facebook.com/The Cadillac Cats or visit their website, www.thecadillaccats.com. 13
HITTING THE ROAD By Michele Kelley

Hello Autumn! While sitting on the porch with my daughter Ashley, enjoying the cooler weather and sharing music, which has become a regular thing for us, she shared a cool video from one of her favorite bands PUP. What makes this video so cool is that they included their fans in the process of writing one of their songs, ‘Free At Last’. How they did this was unique. They posted the title, along with lyrics and a basic chord chart and asked their fans to come with their interpretation of the song. 253 people submitted entries and all of them completely different from one another. Throughout the video they included clips of the fans performing their versions and at the end provided links to 14 hours of all the clips and gave credit to every single one of them. Now that’s cool stuff! One of my many proud mama moments. It’s nice to see how being raised in a household of music can shape a kid. Even though she is now 25, she will always make her mom proud! On to the live music we got to see in September. First up was a show at The Chameleon Club in Lancaster that was put together by Defiant. This was their first time organizing a show and they did an outstanding job! Talk about attention to detail! On the bill first were Audiobox that traveled from Williamsport to Lancaster to perform. This 3-piece, Alternative Rock band are not just a bunch of cool dudes playing together but also ones I consider friends. Including drummer Jason Maurer, who grew up down the street from me and oh could I tell you stories! Ha! Matt Colegrove: guitar/lead vocals & Joe Reichenbach: vocals/ bass, I met later in life, but it’s always cool to see a band from

your hometown many miles away. You can pick up their new CD ‘Lesson Learned’ or find them on Spotify, iTunes, Amazon and YouTube. The second band that evening was Voice the Chaos, an energetic alternative metal band from Dover that formed in the early 2000’s as high school friends. Members include Chris: vocals, Rob: guitar, Bryon: guitar, Trag: bass and Eric: drums. Every few years the band would reform until they decided to hit the studio and record and release their first self-titled album. The night of this show they made available their first physical CD. You can also find them on CD Baby, Amazon, Spotify, iTunes and YouTube. Next up was the metal band Gallowglas from York. Members include J William HeitCoal mann: vox, Don Belch: lead guitar, Brian Faychak: guitar,
Gallowglas Brian Durost: drums and Duy Loufik: bass. This is also a new band that just formed this spring and already released their first CD ‘Let The Fire Dine” and can be found on all major streaming platforms and can be followed on Facebook. They have a fulllength release in the works, so keep your eye out for this. To see where they will be next look them up on Bandsintown. The fourth band was one I have not seen in a few years and one seems to be popping up everywhere right now, Suicide Puppets! If you have not seen these guys perform yet, then you have been living under a rock! This industrial metal band formed in 2005 and has been rocking stages pretty much everywhere. Looking
1818 at these guys in full makeup on stage may be a bit intimidating to some but once you talk to them, you quickly find out they are the sweetest guys and so fun. Members include Twisty: guitar/ vox, Jonny: bass/vox, Steven: guitar. Tattuicide: guitar, Donnie: guitar and Veritas Suicide: drums. They will be returning to the studio this November to record at least three more tracks for an early 2020 release. Stay tuned on show announcements. Some pretty cool things are happening with these guys!
The headlining band, Defiant, and the ones that brought this show together took the stage and killed it! I have seen these guys a few times now and I can honestly say that the best part about this gig is seeing newer bands from the beginning and watching the progress with each performance. I have always felt this band was good, but something happened with these guys since the last time I saw them perform. It’s a pretty cool thing to witness a band clicking and coming alive on stage. Members include Albert Halterman: vocals/gui-

tar, Joe Defiant: guitar, Paul Barlowski: bass and Paul Cochran: drums. These guys are always coming up with clever marketing ideas. Follow them on Facebook to see what they come up with next. Buy their EP ‘The Anarch’ and check out one of their shows! The following night we landed at HMAC to see Stabbing Westward. The first band to open was a local hard rock/metal band, World of Cold from New Oxford. Members include Patrick Stambaugh: vocals/guitar, Kriss Owings: guitar, Eric Wan Valenburgh: Bass, David Allen Cherry: drums. In May they released their first studio mix ‘Rolling Thunder’ in honor of the Armed Forces and service personnel who gave the ultimate sac-

rifice for our freedom. The band references the numbers “664, The Coldest Days” in their bio. When asking Patrick about this, he explained the band was discussing the number of measures in the song ‘Living Thru My Hell’ and the verse added up to 6 measures in the first, 6 measures in the second and 4 in the third. The numbers 664 kept popping up everywhere for the band members. Upon further research, they discovered the meaning of those numbers and that when these numbers repeatedly appear in your life, it means an angel is trying to communicate with you. The band could not ignore this with all the ‘cold days’
timeless. Definitely one to catch if they return to the area. On the 20th we were back at XL Live for the Tyler Bryant show. The first opening band was Volume to Nothing from York. The members of this band have all played together in various projects spanning over Tyler Bryant 15 years. Members in& the Shinedown clude Shawn Williams: vocals/guitar, Peter Vaughn: guitar/vocals, Nate Jones: bass/vocals and Dan Myers: drums. VTN recently released its debut 5-song EP titled “Nascency”. The recording features genres from 90’s Alternative Rock and grunge sounds. These guys were really good, and I had the opportunity to speak and hang out with Shawn after they
Audiobox the members were experiencing in their personal lives. So they adopted those numbers as a reminder of their guardian angels. The next band on stage was another rock/metal band from South Central PA, 1818. They formed in 2015 and were great. They had a really cool stage presence with a ton of energy. The singer was very good at engaging with the crowd and even brought up a kid to the stage to join in on some screaming. Members include Paul Saliga: vocals, Jim Taylor: bass, Cody Wright: guitar and Oren Cessna: drums. If you like heavy, in your face kind of music, this is your band! The following band on stage was Suicide Puppets. I won’t get into this one too much since we already covered them above and again later in the month. Told you they were popping up everywhere! It’s really cool to see the same band on different stages and see the different interactions with fans. I think it is safe to say, they had a lot of fans there to see them at HMAC! And finally, Stabbing Westward. They are an Industrial/Alternative rock band from Chicago that formed in 1986. If you missed this show, you should kick yourself! I absolutely loved these guys! They had a verity of sounds from Depeche Mode to NIN to Filter. I didn’t realize how many songs I actually knew until I was there. Very cool stuff. Check them out. The following Thursday we headed to Blarney’s in Mechanicsburg to do an outdoor photo shoot for Road Case before it started to downpour. We didn’t get to get the shots the band wanted outdoors, so we decided to stick around to hear them play. These guys are such nice guys and do a great job covering 80’s and 90’s rock. They play all over the place, get out there and catch a show. After Blarney’s, I begged Chris to take me over to XL Live to catch Supersuckers play and I am so glad we made it. We missed the first band play, but we were just in time to catch The
Defiant Hangmen. WOW! I loved these guys! They are a rock-n-roll band with a punk flare from LA and they were so much fun to see. Their music took me back to the days of running around town and hanging out at the skate park. So funny how music can transport you back in time! Up next was Supersuckers! Established in 1988, this rock/ punk band is originated in Seattle and in 1997 gave an introduction into country music with their song “Must’ve Been High”. They made a stop at XL Live while on their “The Evil Powers of Rock ‘n Roll Tour” and their technical skill was effortless and

Supersuckers were done performing and let me tell you, he is a super charming guy. It’s always nice to watch a great band and then find out they are really cool people also. You can find their music on all major streaming outlets. Up next was the band Coal from Red Lion/York area. They are an alternative Pop/Rock band that does a great job of keeping the old-school grunge/rock sound while keeping things fresh in the modern-day world. Members include Dal Dawn: vocals, Mark Williams: guitar, Ryan McDonough: guitar, Dennis Matos: bass and Josh Freeburn: drums. These guys were good and take their job as musicians very seriously. Aside from Pennsylvania, they have also drawn a fan base in Maryland. Their latest release, “Yes, Mistress” can be found on all major streaming outlets. Check out their website to keep up to date on shows and news from these guys! www.coalmusic.net Finally, Tyler Bryant and The Shakedown. Besides The Hangmen, these guys were one of my favorite finds for the month! This was their 2nd time to XL Live and the turnout was slightly disappointing but better than the first time around. If people only knew the level of musicianship that comes in and out of this area! They are a rock and roll band that formed in 2009 in Nashville. They were so entertaining to watch on stage. Tyler really knew how to perform to the crowd, and I have to say, this was the first time I witnessed a drummer standing on his base drum to play at certain times throughout songs. Crazy good! They are touring to promote their latest record “Truth and Lies”. This one is a must to pick up! My favorites from this band are ‘Ride’ and ‘Drive Me Mad’. Both are musically and lyrically brilliant. See for yourself! On September 21st, Chris attended the 2nd annual VogFest in Liverpool. Jim Cleveland and Ryan Hayes created VogFest last year in celebration of their friend David Vogelsong who passed away in 2017 due to a car accident. The event started off with a motorcycle ride beginning at the Meiserville Inn and ending up at The Facktory in Liverpool. Approximately 40 motorcycles participated in the ride and over 100 people attended the event. There was a vendor show and silent auction, chicken dinner, 50/50 raffle, as well as 5 bands throughout the evening. All proceeds this year went to benefit Harleys 4 Heros, with over $800 raised. All 5 bands have been featured in our article in the last month or two and all did a great job. Many thanks to Corina Aucker, Throwback 202, World of Cold, Madness at Midnight, and The Suicide Puppets for their performances. While Chris was hard at work at VogFest, I took the night off to hang with my dear friend Mylinda at HMAC for the evening. Nick Myers from 717 Entertainment put a last-minute show together there and did a fine job! Since it was my night off, I was not really prepared to cover any bands, but I feel it necessary to at least give them a mention. First on stage was The Hybrid
Pennsylvania Musician Magazine
Road Case Child, a Progressive Rock/Metal band from the Reading and York areas. These guys were already on stage when we arrived, so we didn’t get to see much of them but what we did see was pretty cool. Up next was 2BB, also known as ‘2 Beards and a Bitch’. The name alone is hilarious! When Mylinda and I arrived, we met 2 girls in the bathroom and started up conversation. We later found out that one of them was the sister to a member of the band. These girls were so much fun to hang out with and had so much energy. They got everyone out on the floor dancing. The band itself is from Towanda and do a mix of rock, hard rock, and alternative metal. Members include Spenser Puzak: guitar/ vocals, Callie Shumway: keys/vocals and Toby Quick: drums. After their performance we got to talk with Toby, and he is such a nice guy. Look them up on Facebook to get their upcoming events. They will be playing at HMAC again on November 10th, so get out and see them. The third band of the night was our friends from Defiant. You have heard all about them from me, so I won’t get into another review. They are simply great guys playing their hearts out and having a great time doing it. I also got to see them on September 28th at The Gamble Farm Inn in Jersey Shore. Jeff Pittinger from Pennsylvania Pipeline Music-TV and his team did an interview with Defiant and recorded live footage of their performance. This should be available within the next few weeks. This show also included Mycenea Worley, Unknown Legend, and the headliner White Witch. WZXR was also in the house and the event was sponsored by Coors Light. Great job Jeff for putting this event together! Jim Price was also attending the show and I am sure he will go into much more detail about this show. Going back to the 21st, the headlining band Eximious. This was their debut show at HMAC. They are a rock band from Lancaster area that formed in 2018 and members include Colby Bennett: vocals, Dan Kecki: guitar/ keys and Brady Hearn: drums. You may recognize some of these guys as they used to be former members of ‘From Ashes To New’. They spent an entire year developing the band and fine-tuning things before entering the studio to record the bands first two debut singles. ‘Mind On Fire’ and ‘Anywhere But Here’. Well, that wraps up another month. There is a ton of great music coming to the area in October! Keep picking up your copy of the magazine and check out where shows are happening! Get out there and support live music and musicians, put your pennies together to place an ad in the magazine. It literally costs next to nothing! Josh will hook you up with putting things together. If you see me out, please stop and say hello and introduce yourself. Until then, influence everyone in a good way! Peace!

THE PROFESSOR By Jim Price
Another summer has transitioned into fall, and as colors begin to appear on some trees around my hometown of Altoona, summer festivals are transitioning into fall festivals, with a few more weekends of live music remaining before arriving cold temperatures chase everything back indoors. During its first seven years, proceeds from the annual Pickin’ For Wishes benefit concert have enabled the Make A Wish Foundation of Greater Pennsylvania and West Virginia to grant 43 different wishes for young people dealing with debilitating and life-threatening health conditions in Cambria, Blair and Huntingdon Counties. Now a highlight of the late summer season, this year’s Pickin’ for Wishes happened in late August at the Cresson Sportsmen’s Association. This was a great day all
around, as four groups – Mountain City Grass, Hickory Bottom Band, Hillbilly Gypsies and Mama Corn – provided bluegrass sounds throughout the day. (Tree performed the night before.) Each group performed twice during the course of the day, with Mountain City Grass kicking off the music at high noon. This group’s current edition – Denny Cerully on vocals and acoustic guitar, Kate Cerully on upright bass, Jason Dodson on fiddle, Jeff Bell on banjo and Ed Decker on guitar – celebrated bluegrass tradition as they dug into the catalogs of The Stanley Brothers, Flatt and Scruggs, Jimmie Martin, Bill Monroe and more. They performed plenty of time-tested bluegrass favorites with a relaxed and jovial presentation, and helped set the day’s happy tone. Next was the Hickory Bottom Band, featuring members from Bedford and Somerset Counties. Mark Bollman on mandolin and vocals, Christina Bollman on guitar and vocals, Roger Grimm on guitar and vocals, Tim Custer on banjo and Dan Smith on upright bass mixed a variety of folk, bluegrass and country numbers, plus original songs from their recently-issued CD. Some of their original numbers this day included the “Shanksville Stomp” and “Troubled Angel.” They also performed numbers from Country Gazette, Merle Haggard, Dan Seals, Roseanne Cash, Dave Evans and others; and they also grassed up versions of B.J. Thomas/Blue Swede’s “Hooked on a Feeling,” Pure Prairie League’s “Amie,” The Coasters’ “Rhythm of the Rain,” and – for the finale of their last set – an instrumental take on “Somewhere Over the Rainbow.” The Hillbilly Gypsies picked up the tempo during their two sets, having fun and showing dazzling musicianship as they mixed traditional folk and bluegrass numbers with a few surprises along the way. Singer and guitarist Trae Buckner, wife Jamie Lynn
Buckner on lead and backing vocals, Levi Houston Sanders on 5-string banjo, new fiddle man Robbie Mann and Ryan Cramer on doghouse bass kept it lively with tunes from Kenny Baker, Pete Rowan, Flatt and Scruggs, Jimmie Martin, Hazel Dickens, Don Reno and more. Highlights were numerous, including their fast-firing instrumental displays on Earl Scruggs’ “Pike County Breakdown,” Flatt & Scruggs’ “Shuckin’ the Corn” and Bill Monroe’s “Wheel Hoss” (thanks to Robbie for educating me and the rest of the audience on what “peelin’ the taters” on fiddle is all about!), also Jamie Lynn belting out her passionate voice on the traditional folk murder ballad “Pretty Polly,” and the group’s version of Marshall Tucker Band’s “Fire on the Mountain.” And Mama Corn delivered the fun as well; singer and guitarist Bruce Forr, singer and banjo player Jeremy Nelson, upright bassist and singer Bryan Homan and dobro, harmonica player and singer Johnny Stevens mixed songs from their catalog of original tunes with their folksy and grassy takes on select covers. Original songs such as “High Rise,” “About a Minute Ago” and “Someday Knock on Wood” were again crowd-pleasers, and Mama Corn also broke out the Ben Nelson-penned “Shenandoah Mountaintops,” the Manfred Mann-popularized “Fox on the Run” and more. Beyond the music itself, Pickin’ for Wishes was all about the kids, and several Wish kids were brought onto the stage throughout the day to share their special stories of how having their wishes granted by Make A Wish brought them happiness and hope as they dealt with their respective medical situations. One Wish recipient – former thyroid cancer patient Troy – “paid it forward” by organizing a fundraising golf tournament for Make A Wish that happened a few weekends after this event. The stories were heartwarming and heart-tugging, and reminded everyone of the real reason for Pickin’ for Wishes. After a stormy forecast forced cancellation of Penn State Altoona’s “Ivyside Off the Rails” music and arts event in April, the originally-scheduled headliner, We The Kings, finally did play at the campus in late August. Recent NBC “The Voice” contestant Jimmy Mowery and his band, The New High, opened the evening with a mix of modern rock/pop original songs and select covers, including several that he performed during his “Voice” run last spring. Jimmy will be opening a concert for his “Voice” coach, John Legend, in Newport, Rhode Island on Oct. 4, and he returns to Altoona to perform at the Jaffa Shrine on Oct. 12. The Kings soon took the stage and captivated the campus audience with their brand of energetic, rocking brand of power pop. The Florida-based group did songs from throughout their career, punctuated with stories and humor from singer and guitarist Travis Clark. The personable frontman wove a tale of how a date evolved into a unique game of Tetris as he led into the group’s hit “Secret Valentine,” and he had fun with audience members and bandmates alike throughout the set. We The Kings led off with “Skyway Avenue,” and did their popular numbers such as “She Takes Me High,” “Just Keep Breathing,” “Sad Song,” “Say You Like Me,” and for their finale, “Check Yes Juliet,” where the audience sang the song’s last chorus back to the band a cappella. The We The Kings concert was among several live music highlights during Labor Day Weekend. Another highlight was the annual Cambria City Ethnic Festival in Johnstown, with abundant food, vendors and live music happening at stages and venues along and near Chestnut Street. My Ethnic Fest journey started at ACRP’s “Irish Corner,” as Full Kilt performed when I first arrived on Saturday. Singer and guitarist Mike Zerbee, fiddler Mandy Passmore-Ott, bassist and singer Chris Myers and drummer Jake Yarnish mixed up Irish rock and pub favorites with original tunes, Irish takes on popular rock songs and more. They led the crowd on a clapping contest during “Whiskey in the Jar” and gesture calesthenics during the “Unicorn Song,” and did Irish-toned reboots on John Denver’s “Thank God I’m (An Irish) Boy” and Charlie Daniels’ “The Devil Went Down to (Dublin).” I next saw Three Of Hearts performing outside Holy Cross Lutheran Church. The biggest highlight of their set wasn’t even musical, as the group celebrated the health and recovery of drummer, keyboardist and singer John Shimko – back in action after suffering a massive heart attack while performing during the Thunder In The Valley motorcycle rally in June. John celebrated life and thanked Conemaugh Health System for his recovery; several times playing keys, drums and singing simultaneously. He, bassist Duaine Detrick and guitarist Joe Tirpak played a variety of rock’n’roll hits from ZZ Top, CCR, John Mellencamp, Bob Seger, Four Seasons, Van Morrison and more. Also rock’n’rolling were the Tom Katz at St. Mary’s pavilion; singer and keyboardist Tom Voytas, guitarist and singer Jack Duvall and drummer and singer Tom Romanak kept folks hap-
pily dancing with hits from Roy Orbison, Bruce Springsteen, Rolling Stones, Billy Joel, Johnny Cash, CCR and more – even their original song, “Cambria City’s All Right With Me.” Octane then capped the night at Ace’s Lounge with their hard-hitting sounds, and kept the dance floor packed as they spanned 1980s rock from Bon Jovi, Ozzy, Journey and Duran Duran to nu-metal favorites from Papa Roach, Linkin Park, Disturbed and everything between. I returned for Sunday’s Ethnic Fest entertainment, again starting at ACRP’s “Irish Corner” as The Irish Pretenders were under way and celebrating traditional Irish, Irish rebel and pub songs. Flanked by Dave Scott and Bob Mahood on guitars and mandolins, Tripp Crilly on guitar and harmonica, and Mike Docherty on bodhran and vocals; singer, guitarist and ringleader John Skelley shared history, stories and insight about the songs and Ireland. The Irish Pretenders did such numbers as “A Place in the Choir,” “The Enniskillen Dragoon,” “Finnegan’s Wake,” Phil Coulter’s “The Town I Loved So Well” and more. I then proceeded to the Venue Of Merging Arts (VOMA) outdoor stage, where the Bird Dogs – Adam Milkovich and Justin Giuffre – were performing. With Adam switching between guitar and mandolin and Justin playing guitar, both performed acoustic rock and folk numbers from Neil Young, Rolling Stones, The Band, Johnny Cash, Steve Earle, George Jones, Grateful Dead and more. Josh Spinelli from the Les Hunter Band then followed, performing a selection that mixed his own original country songs with tunes from the Rolling Stones, Neil Young, Little Feat and others. I then saw Totem as they wrapped up the live music at St. Mary’s Pavilion. Perry Sheesley still fronts and plays guitar in the group, with his son Corey now playing bass, plus Gene Suto on keys and Tom Gajewski on drums. As I dined on the St. Mary’s Polish food grand slam of halushki, halupki, pirohi and kolbasi, Totem performed classic rock hits and favorites from the 1960s through 1980s; pulling out numbers not often covered on local stages such as the Vanilla Fudge take on “You Keep Me Hangin’ On,” The Beatles’ “Revolution,” Bryan Adams’ “Somebody” and “Cuts Like a Knife,” Norman Greenbaum’s “Spirit in the Sky,” Paul Simon’s “Late in the Evening” and more. Totem sounded sharp - Perry still sings with a hearty voice and can still wield a mean guitar, and Gene fired off some impressive solos on the keys, with Corey and Tom providing full, driving rhythms. last Ethnic Fest stop was at the Catholic Slovak Hall, where Latrobe-based foursome Near The Edge played an energetic variety of classics and hits. Comprised of Denny on keys, Dave on guitar, John on bass and Steve on drums, Near The Edge surprised with their variety, pulling out songs from Billy Preston, Simple Minds, Escape Club, Pink Floyd, Sly & the Family Stone and more. Labor Day again brought me to the Blair County Game, Fish & Forestry Association’s annual Ox Roast Festival, and I was able to witness Chad Patterson’s performance. Now a solo performer after his duo with Mike Clapper, Borrowed Time, ended earlier this year, Chad strummed and sang a variety of rock and pop classics from the 1960s and 70s. He did a lot of songs not often heard on live stages anymore – such as Donovan’s “Mellow Yellow,” Sonny & Cher’s “The Beat Goes On,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “Scarborough Fair,” Jonathan Edwards’ “Sunshine” and more. He also did numbers from CCR, Neil Young, Roy Orbison, Stealers Wheel, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Eric Clapton and more. Coupled with great weather and the festival’s ox roast sandwiches plus other edibles, Chad’s performance provided a pleasant and relaxing portion to the Labor Day afternoon. I also caught the latter portion of Rosie & the Jammers’ performance in the waning moments of the annual Forest Hills Festival in St. Michael. Group namesake Rosey Sida on keys, Jim Mosey on guitar and lead vocals, Brian Anator and Brian Regala, and Eric Furfari on accordion mixed a variety of polkas and pop standards; everything from Ben E. King’s “Stand By Me” and Perez Prado’s “Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White” to the “Detroit Polka,” “Hot Dog Polka,” “They’re Always In the Way Polka” and “In Heaven There Is No Beer.” Downtown Indiana again hosted the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival last month. I caught a good portion of Saturday’s entertainment slate, starting with Grist For The Mill. Six members strong and based in Ambrose (north of Indiana), Grist For The Mill performed an intriguing blend of pop, soul and swingera classics. Several band members sang; Patti Holmes crooned the Frances Langford-popularized 1935 standard “I’m In the Mood for Love” and the jazz standard “All of Me,” while guitarist Dave Loomis sang lead on Ray Charles’ “Unchain My Heart,” and Al Craigie – brandishing a double-neck ‘Frankenstein’ guitar – fronted the group on Cole Porter’s “Do I Love You.” Next was Jim Donovan & the Sun King Warriors, who brought their upbeat brand of rocking groove and Americana. The group shifted some of the spotlight on Indiana native, guitarist and harmonica player Dan Murphy, allowing him to show his talents before his hometown crowd. Other highlights included the song “We Have Arrived,” which culminated in a vibrant percussion jam featuring Jim Donovan behind the kit, plus conga and bongo player Bryan Fazio and Joe Marini on snare drum; and a version of the Rolling Stones’ “Sympathy for the Devil” with guest Chuck Olson belting out the Jagger-ish lead vocal. As the crowd had swelled to fill nearly the entire block of Philadelphia Street from front to back, the Jukehouse Bombers then delivered scorching electric blues and blues rock to the masses. The group – the father-andson singing and guitar-playing tandem of Jimmy and Joe Roach, guitarist Kirsch, bassist Troy Laney and drummer Josh Williams – introduced several new numbers from their forthcoming recording, and a rendition of Santo & Johnny’s “Sleepwalk” dedicated in memory of popular local musician and community figure Ken “Hiram” Holliday, who passed in July. Headlining this festival in the town where it all began for them 33 years ago, The Clarks marveled at the huge Indiana crowd as they performed favorites from their vast original song arsenal. Lead singer and guitarist Scott Blasey recalled the group’s beginnings in the basement of Sigma Chi Fraternity in 1986, and both guitarist/mandolinist Rob James and bassist Greg Joseph stared in wonder and commented that they had never seen Philadelphia Street this full of people before. The Clarks mixed new numbers with established favorites; including “Born Too Late,” “Penny on the Floor,” “Let It Go,” “On Saturday” and “Better Off Without You,” and welcomed guest Dylan Murphy (son of Sun King Warriors’ Dan Murphy) to play drums on the ever-popular “Cigarette.” I made it to two Grange fairs in recent weeks. In late August, I caught one of the last nights of the annual Centre Grange Fair near Centre Hall. A thunderstorm had rolled through the area shortly before my arrival, which might have helped out bluegrass performers Remington Ryde by chasing some folks under the roof at the Southside Stage. Four members strong, Remington Ryde served up two sets that blended traditional bluegrass, country, gospel and original songs. The group did numbers from Jimmy Martin, Bill Monroe, Flatt & Scruggs and others; plus continued on next page...

performed a version of Steve Earle’s “Daddy Doesn’t Pray Anymore” and Hank Williams’ “Move It On Over,” where the group staged a duel between mandolin player Josh Daniels and upright bass player Ron Truman. I also caught part of The Jukebox Heroes’ performance on the Grandstand stage. One of several performance entities of the New Jersey-based Mahoney Brothers, Jukebox Heroes impersonates and salutes famous names from throughout the rock’n’roll era. This night they strung together three-song mini-sets saluting the look and sound of Buddy Holly, Willie Nelson, the Beatles, the Beach Boys and more. And I saw The Boomers as they entertained during last month’s Harmony Grange Fair near Westover. On a pleasant, cool late summer night, the Boomers line-up of singer and bassist Bob Helbig, guitarist Dave Nichols and drummer John Stevens triggered some dancing and kept audience members pleased with their mixture of vintage and classic rock and roll from the 1950s through 1980s. They covered a wide swath of material this night, spanning early rock’n’roll gems from Del Shannon and Ritchie Valens to 1960s tunes from Johnny Rivers, Swinging Blue Jeans, The Swingin’ Medallions, The Kingsmen and Steppenwolf, 1970s numbers from Norman Greenbaum, Eric Clapton, Bob Seger and the late Eddie Money, and 1980s favorites from Greg Kihn Band, John Fogerty, John Cafferty & the Beaver Brown Band and Poison. The Boomers executed like a well-oiled machine as they had fun and cut loose – Dave was lighting it up on the guitar strings; his solos were dazzling, and he demonstrated great slide work on “Stuck in the Middle with You” and the group’s closing rendition of Santo & Johnny’s “Sleepwalk.” The Boomers kept the music constant and the people happy, and this night’s performance showed why this group remains a steady favorite on the region’s stages. Johnstown’s Roxbury Bandshell closed the book on its 2019 concert season last month with a double-bill. Jeff Webb and the Delectable Sound started the music; I arrived during the latter half of their performance, and enjoyed what I heard as they did numbers from Earth Wind & Fire and Redbone, the original number “We’ve Only Got Tonight” off their “Crossroads” CD, and their joyous set-finishing rendition of the Beatles’ “Hey
Jude.” Johnny Cash and June Carter tribute Ole 97 then presented their celebration of Johnny and June, plus a few other country legends and some original tunes as well over their two sets. This was an excellent performance – Randy Hunter and Charlene Boldin both sounded great in the Johnny Cash and June Carter roles, flanked by guitarists Joe Brucker and Doug Nagy, bassist Andy Heinze and drummer Paul Carpenter. They did the established Johnny favorites, of course – “I Walk the Line,” “Ghost Riders (in the Sky),” “A Boy Named Sue,” “Folsom Prison Blues” (dedicated in memory of the late Bill Venet Sr.), “One Piece at a Time” and “Ring of Fire.” They performed some of the Johnny and June duets as well, such as “Jackson” and “Long Legged Guitar Pickin’ Man” – Randy and Charlene displayed a fun performance chemistry, you could tell they were both having a blast! Ole 97 included some classics from other legends as well, with Charlene singing lead on Loretta Lynn’s “Coal Miner’s Daughter” and Janis Joplin’s “Me and Bobby McGee,” Joe singing and playing fiddle on Charlie Daniels’ “South’s Gonna Do It Again,” as well as fronting the group on Hank Williams’ “Your Cheatin’ Heart” and Glenn Campbell’s “Rhinestone Cowboy,” and the group saluting veterans in the audience with Sgt. Barry Sadler’s “Ballad of the Green Berets.” Ole 97 performed some original songs, too, including two inspired by Johnny Cash – Randy shared the story of how the group’s chance encounter with Marty Stuart (who played in Johnny’s band) inspired the song “Black Flag,” and Joe sang the group’s established Johnny-themed original “ A Whole Lotta Cash.” Ole 97 closed their show in patriotic fashion, saluting the flag with their rendition of Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A.” The third time was the charm…After Rokkandy’s two previous attempts to perform at Altoona’s Valley View Amphitheater were scuttled by bad weather, the weather was great for their third try last month to close out the Amphitheater’s concert season. Singer and keyboardist Pat McConnell, singer and guitarist Bob DeArmitt, bassist Kelly Montgomery and new drummer Bobby Frye, Jr. mixed hits and favorites spanning the 1960s to now. They kept the music constant with tunes from Jimmy Eat World, Maroon 5, Kid Rock, Pretenders, Young MC, Proclaimers, AC/DC, Steppenwolf, Sugar Ray, Madonna, Def Leppard, Ramones, Joan Jett,
CRETER GUITAR SHOP
Bon Jovi, Toni Basil and more. Rokkandy kept it casual and fun on the stage, and their shifting between rock, pop, hip-hop and dance numbers kept things interesting throughout. One haphazard highlight came when – as the drummer took a quick bathroom break – Bob and Pat started into a surprise rendition of Little River Band’s “Cool Change!” (Rokkandy has a new drummer since this show, as Todd Mallory replaces Bobby behind the kit. Roadkill is back. With a new line-up, Roadkill made their return to the live stage during a benefit last month at the Slovak Club in Osceola Mills. “Roadkill’s 30th” marked the 30th anniversary of Roadkill “rot n’roll,” while raising money for Lisa’s Ladybugs Patient Care Fund. The assembled crowd didn’t have to wait long for “rot n’roll” to reconvene...The 2019 incarnation of Roadkill – founder, singer, bassist and ringleader Greg Majewsky, guitarist Tommy Raab and drummer Clayton Miller – took the stage and played their rampaging title song, “Roadkill”...before Greg told the audience, “Thanks for coming,” and all three musicians exited the stage. A few moments later, the three returned to the stage anyway to play the rest of their set. (Yes, Greg’s sense of humor is still intact!) Roadkill proceeded to mix new songs off their just-issued “Still Alive and...Well?” comeback album with many of their established classics. They introduced the lengthy jam “Happy Blues” from the new CD, followed by what is destined to become the next Roadkill classic, the anthemic shoutalong, “American Slob.” The band members shared some tender moments about life before playing their ode to Greg’s lousy golfing skills, “Lost in the Woods.” The hits kept coming – “Them Blues,” their adoring tribute to a Canadian pop star, “I Wanna Be An Ex-Boyfriend of Alanis Morisette,” their monstrous cookie salute “Hardcoreo,” “Public Service Announcement from the Anti-Valentine’s Day Council” and their set-closer, “The Adam Stomp.” And they did one other number from the new CD, a tune about shady preachers called “You Should Be Ashamed.” The new mach edition of Roadkill executed full-throttle and in-yourface; Greg howled and snarled his words with vigor and vinegar, apologizing to the crowd for “30 years of lousy music, terrible singing and unfunny jokes” along the way. It was a glorious return to action that had a number of longtime Roadkill fans cheering and shouting back song choruses. The benefit continued with continued on next page...

Clayton taking the stage to perform some of his darker-toned acoustic original songs, before his other band project – the interestingly-named Chewbeardua – rocked some more original tunes plus a gritty take on Nine Inch Nails’ “Hurt.” The night then saw the debut of new area cover band The Mess. Featuring Roadkill’s Greg on bass, Brad Eckberg on guitar, Trudy Eckberg on lead vocals and James Van Valkenburg Sr. on drums, The Mess mixed classics and hits from Jimmy Eat World, Journey, 4 Non Blondes, Tracy Chapman, Violent Femmes, Alice In Chains, Blondie, Lynyrd Skynyrd and more. McGarvey’s featured some wild shows in recent weeks. One of them was a ‘hellish’ triple-bill that featured The Goddamn Gallows, Mephiskapheles and The Flannels. I did not get to see The Flannels or Mephiskapheles, but did arrive as The Goddamn Gallows brought their fire-and-brimstone brand of raucous punk, folk, metal, bluegrass and gypsy musical vibes to the stage. The Motor City-based contingent of frontman/guitarist Mikey Classic, doghouse bass player Fishgutzzz, Jayke Orvis on the mandolin and Baby Genius on drums kept the crowd wild and dancing with action-packed tunes and crazy antics. The group mixed up tunes from their latest album, “The Trial,” with numbers from throughout their discography. Mikey’s raspy hellfire preacher vocal was front and center as he and the group rode the musical line between salvation and damnation… And as McGarvey’s marked the “Halfway to St. Patrick’s Day” occasion last month with a full weekend of Irish-themed live music, Pittsburgh’s Bastard Bearded Irishmen provided their raucous Irish-themed party. Six members strong, the group brought feverish, go-for-broke Irish punk-rocking firepower that kept the crowd charged from start to end. Movement was constant – especially mandolin player Danny Rectenwald, who came out onto the dance floor to lead a conga line at one point. The Bastard Bearded Irishmen had reckless abandon fun, performing death-defying Irish highjinks as they straddled stage barriers and climbed atop speaker stacks. Other performers I saw recently included Ed N’Born, the husband-and-wife acoustic duo of Ethan and Savanna, and Wilted as they performed during last month’s Downtown Night Market in downtown Altoona…The new four-piece mach edition of Black Cat Moan, including newly-added bassmsan Brad

BOB RANDALL – OUTLAW (Double D Productions) Based along the Susquehanna River south of Selinsgrove, Bob Randall has been writing country songs since his youth. Now 74, Bob follows the country outlaw tradition on his latest CD. Outlaw. Bob crafts simple, catchy and relatable numbers with a style rooted firmly in country’s old school greats such as Hank Williams, Merle Haggard, George Jones, Waylon Jennings and Johnny Cash. Bob plays guitars and dobro, while singing with a rugged yet rustic voice. Several musical friends help him along the way; among them Alexander Paul (who co-produced the album with Bob), Forrest Kerstetter, Tim Latshaw, Jeff Mamett, Todd Fogle, Steve Adams, fiddlers Jessie Morgan and Dan Hess, harmonica player John Sweeney, and several backing singers. Ups and downs of the heart provide themes to some of the songs; a breakup sets a sullen tone on the album’s opening track, “Exactly What I’m Gonna Do,” while social statuses doom a relationship on “Cold Kentucky Rain.” Love grows from a bar conversation on the more upbeat “She Handed Me a Beer,” and Bob sings of the perils of bar gigs and angry husbands on “Gettin’ Gone.” Bob references his ‘good ol’ boy’ heroes such as Charlie Daniels, Bocephus (Hank Williams, Jr.), Kris Kristofferson and others as he defines his country outlaw turf on the song “Outlaw Country,” and ponders the fates of past outlaws on the darker “The Ghost of All the Outlaws.” Bob enjoys the pleasures of life on “Don’t Mean to Brag,” two versions which appear on the album; and he also enjoys the pleasures of good drink on “A Drinkin’ Thing.” Bob’s country twang is genuine; he sounds relaxed and confident throughout the album, and his support cast of musicians flesh out the rural flavors of the set with their contributions. The production and engineering give the album a balanced, basic sound that allows the simplicity of the melodies and Bob’s earnest singing delivery to shine through. Outlaw provides a satisfying listen, as Bob Randall carries the torch for traditional, rootsy outlaw country music. (The CD can be obtained through the website www. bobscountrymusic.com, or through CD Baby and other online retailers.)

WHITE WITCH – WHITE WITCH (no label) White Witch frontman Jeff Pittinger established his mantra “Never Dies the Dream” as the title of the group’s last CD 11 years ago. That dream – of creating music and getting it out to the masses – continues to drive Jeff and White Witch on their latest, self-titled offering. White Witch – Jeff, guitarist Doug Lehman, bass players Jimmy Lovcik and Jack Death, and drummer Carl Berry – introduce several hard-rocking new songs and update two previously-recorded numbers through the album’s eight tracks. While their sound remains rooted in the classic 1970s/80s hard rock tradition, White Witch dabbles in some power-metal dynamics here, evidenced by the chunkier, ominous-toned riffs that power some of the new material. After the dark guitar prelude “Serenata” opens the album, “Psycho Sister” forcefully chugs into action, with Jeff playing a lyrical tug-of-war with a temptress while Doug crafts some scorching guitar solo work in the tune’s latter stages. Perhaps the group’s new manifesto, “Changes Coming” steps on
the gas pedal as Jeff reboots the group’s mission of invading towns and rocking faces. Jeff becomes more introspective on “Running with Scissors,” realizing that his creative muse is the tonic that helps him deal with life’s daily hassles. White Witch reboots two earlier numbers, giving a sterner treatment to their Salem witch trial ode “Slaughter in Salem,” and reworking the first song Jeff ever penned – “The Seed” – which lays out his dream and his undying quest to make it happen despite critics and naysayers. The song’s new incarnation stretches out the closing homestretch, allowing Doug to go full shred on the guitar strings. Near album’s end, White Witch indulges horror-metal turf with the savage, thrash-powered “Log Splitter,” as Jeff taps his inner Ozzy with psychotic fervor. The band’s instrumental execution sounds tight and on mark through the set, with Doug delivering guitar solo precision and the rhythm section bringing ample thunder to drive the songs forward. Vocally, Jeff understands the dynamics of his voice, knowing where it can and cannot go, so his singing sounds strong and steady. Produced by Jeff and the band; and recorded, mixed and mastered by Bret Alexander and Paul Smith at Eight Days A Week Studios in Northumberland; White Witch sounds, clean, balanced and full. Thirty-five years after their inception, White Witch still packs a hard-rocking punch with this self-titled album, as never dies their dream, and never dies their rock. (The CD can be obtained through CD Baby and other online outlets.) JEFF WEBB AND THE DELECTABLE SOUND – CROSSROADS (no label) Influenced by a wide range of musicians and genres, Jeff Webb became an Associate Professor of Music and Director of Choral Activities at the University of Pittsburgh at Johnstown (UPJ), and subsequently formed The Delectable Sound in 2014 as his vehicle to present original music inspired from his influences. Jeff Webb and the Delectable Sound’s sixsong debut EP, Crossroads, introduces listeners to a sound rooted in classic 1960s and 1970s soul and funk, accented with flourishes of blues and rock. Jeff sings, plays keys and percussion; flanked by Josh Covert on guitar and trumpet, Jim Bilitski on guitar and saxophones, Scott Jeffreys on bass, Dominick Peruso, Jr. on drums and percussion, and backing singers Kelly Mednis and Chloe continued on next page...

Wieczorek. The disc varies between upbeat numbers, bluesy and soulful ballads, with Jeff’s smooth and soulful voice front and center through it all. Channeling 1970s-era funk and soul influences, the feisty and funky “Can’t Take the Heat” introduces a determined Jeff warning the world to stay out of his way as he follows his muse and brings his dreams to life. The rhythms groove and swagger here, the backing singers offer sassy support behind Jeff’s vocal lead, and the horns provide timely riffs and accents to help drive the song along. Also reminiscent of that 1970s soul vibe, “Running ‘Round in Circles” explores the trap of the modern-day 9-to-5 cycle, and how it delays and derails dreams and ambitions. Tapping a 1960s Memphis soul flavor, Jeff celebrates a lady with seductive footwear on “Bad Ass Boots,” with horns proudly powering the song forward. In a slower vein, the bluesy and shadowy “We’ve Only Got Tonight” provides an urgent call to romance. Driven by Jeff’s piano and voice, the reflective title number “Crossroads” examines a fork in the road and the soul-searching on which way to proceed. And the closing number, “Feels Like Rain,” demonstrates a slower Allman Brothers-like flavor as Jeff warns of stormy relationship weather ahead. Jeff carries these tunes, singing with clarity and authority, displaying sturdy vocal range and heartfelt passion on each song. The Delectable Sound delivers the goods as well, as the horns pack punch, the guitars dazzle, the backing harmonies are tight and tasteful, and the rhythm section struts, styles and profiles. Recorded by Daniel Blake at The Schoolhouse studio in Greensburg, Crossroads sounds crisp, balanced and clean, with every component of this group’s presentation sounding delectable and pristine. Crossroads provides an impressive introduction into Jeff Webb and the Delectable Sound’s soulful world, and offers a vibrant and pleasant listening experience. (The CD can be obtained through the website www.delectablesound.com, as well as through CD Baby and other online music retailers.)
