ACROSS THE DESK By Robin Noll
October -wow how time continues to fly by. We have been enjoying some beautiful weather in PA as of late, our hearts, prayers and talents continue to go out in support of all those still recuperating from the terrible natural disasters that happened in September throughout the world. The good that comes of these times are how people reach out and help one another and how it reminds us of what truly matters in our life and that is life, things can be replaced.Through sorrow and pain comes new resolve to stand strong and carry on. It is overwhelming all that is going on but another thing that helps is music. People were singing in the shelters and singing in the streets to comfort and entertain in an environments without electrical power. It gets eerily quiet when the electrical buzz is gone but music cuts through the silence and brings comfort to those going through rough times. Yes we will continue to pray and give to those who are suffering.
Roctober is Jim Price “The Professor’s “ birthday month. October 12th is the big day. We are very thankful for Jim and all he does for the magazine. He does a lot of stuff gratis so if you see him out and about, buy him a drink or two and wish him a Happy Birthday. Happy Birthday Jim! In November we will begin or 36th Year of providing the Pennsylvania Musician Magazine...WOW! THANK YOU to all who read and pick up your monthly copy and to all those who advertise or send money. We are not independently wealthy nor have we accepted money or grants from the government. We depend solely upon our wonderful advertisers. So if you like the PA Musician Magazine and what we do please call us at 717.444.2423. We’re not fancy and we actually answer the phone if we’re here, and if you leave a message I will call back. Go through the paper and mark your calendars for the musical menu that is being delivered in October. Not only live musical events but Djs spinning your favorite tunes, Karaoke, Trivia and Halloween Costume parties are everywhere. Getting together with people and enjoying life is what it is really about. Believe it or not there are still many people who enjoy being with others who have like minded interest besides sitting in front of a computer or
TV allowing the media to control what we hear and see. One event that is happening is ZZ Top at Santander in Reading. It’s a SLP Concert and I was like thinking is it THE ZZ TOPS? So I went to the SLP’s site and this is what I found out.. ZZ TOP a/k/a “That Little Ol’ Band From Texas,” lay undisputed claim to being the longest running major rock band with original personnel intact and in 2004 the Texas trio was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Of course, there are only three of them – Billy F Gibbons, Dusty Hill, Frank Beard -- but it’s still a remarkable achievement that they’re still very much together after more than 40 years of rock, blues, and boogie on the road and in the studio. “Yeah,” says Billy, guitarist extraordinaire, “we’re the same three guys, bashing out the same three chords.” With the release of each of their albums the band has explored new ground in terms of both their sonic approach and the material they’ve recorded. ZZ TOP is the same but always changing. So if you’re ever wanting for info on a SLP Concert go to their website and get the whole story. They have information on all those performing in their events. But that’s all the space I have so God Bless YOU and God Bless America! I love Jesus and I love you Whitey!

OUT ‘n’ ABOUT By Rachel Rocks
Yet another whirlwind of a month goes speeding by! It’s hard to believe this is already my October article. This month was so crazy with hurricanes and earthquakes and other crazy weather and disasters. It really does make you hug your loved ones a little tighter, and always keep in mind no one knows the day or time that disaster will strike. Live each day to the fullest! My days have definitely been full and crazy, that’s for sure and I am truly blessed with a life partner that is a true partner in life, I love you Kris!! I started out this month going out to celebrate my birthday. After a super fun day delivering the September issue, I sucked it up and some how found enough energy to go check out Stonewood at Joe K’s and I’m glad I did. I called my friend Kristin right before I drove by her house and she quickly got ready and headed out with me. Stonewood has been advertising for a while now, but they usually play more over towards the Gettysburg area, so usually they are too far away for me to see. I’m glad to see they are stretching out their area, and are showing up more and more, closer to Harrisburg. A majority of Stonewood’s songs are country, but they also throw in a few of your favorite party rock songs too. With so many vocalists in their group, they can really cover a large variety of artists and songs. They also have three guitar players, which at first you think is a bit crazy, but soon you quickly realize the depth and dynamic it adds to each song. Shannon’s voice is amazing and when she gets a break from her vocal abilities she quickly comes out in the crowd to dance along with their fans. Stonewood does a great job including the crowd and making sure everyone is having a good time. There aren’t many bands out there that have the energy or the stage presence of Stonewood. If you want a band that can keep your crowd entertained all night long, Stonewood is the band for you! Check out their ad in this issue and get out there and see this band for yourself, or better yet, get them booked at your venue or private party!
My next exciting weekend, my son Zack was turning 15. The one thing he said he wanted was an Acoustic guitar. My Dad, Whitey, has done an amazing job at teaching Zack how to play guitar, and passing on his love for music to my kids! Music is truly an amazing thing and it’s even more amazing how it can connect generations. My life has been insanely busy so we haven’t gotten up there nearly enough for lessons, but I’m glad to say that Zack keeps practicing and improving. It’s awesome to see someone just sitting in my living room playing music, it’s how I grew up, and it’s truly something I took for granted all those years. I love my Daddy oh so much, and the love and devotion he has for his family is something I do truly appreciate. I

know I don’t tell him nearly enough how much he means to me, but I love you Daddy, and I’ll always be your baby… The next night I was out planning my 20th Year Class Reunion, (holy crap I am getting old). We met at Joe K’s to plan, I was hoping they’d have a band later, but no such luck. It was a Friday night, and no entertainment, except a guy playing songs on his laptop. Needless to say, they had maybe 10 non-employees in the entire bar. People say that bands don’t bring a crowd.. but when you compare nights of places that have live music regularly to nights they don’t have a band, it’s a big difference, anywhere I go. People do still prefer live entertainment, no matter what anyone says… A live band is more unpredictable and a heck of a lot more entertaining, even if you might not necessarily like their
style of music, they can still draw you in and keep you at a venue way longer than a jukebox. Since nothing was happening at Joe K’s we decided to head down to Appalachian Brewing Co. (ABC) for Nate Myers and the Aces. It’s been a long time since I saw the full rockin’ Aces along with Nate, and as usual they didn’t disappoint. Jimmi really helps out on lead vocals and gives Nate a break, and when he’s not singing Jimmi wails away on his guitar leaving a path of shock and awe through the crowd. It was good to see Kenny banging on this drums again too. He does a great job at keeping the guys reigned in and on track throughout the night. Nate and Pete were amazing as usual, I don’t want to leave those guys out, they are always there working hard and keeping us all entertained all night long. It was great to meet Steve and Sandy from out towards Johnstown. Steve is a long time reader of the mag-

azine, and does his best to get Nate Myers and the Aces booked at venues near him out in the Johnstown/Altoona area. Appalachian Brewing Co.’s Abbey Bar is a great place to go see live music, I really don’t go there nearly enough. They not only get a lot of amazing local acts, but they also get quite a few national acts passing through the area. I wish we could convince them to advertise, but right now I try and keep an eye on my e-mails to see who is playing there next. While we listened to the music, my friend Holly and I enjoyed ABC’s specialty a “beer float”.. It’s a chocolate stout with Hall’s Dairy vanilla ice cream!! Hall’s Dairy is from my old stomping grounds up in Millerstown, PA, it definitely has a soft spot in my heart, and especially in my stomach! Ha!! Next time you stop in at ABC do yourself a favor and get a float, it is mmm..mm.. GOOD! And of course support live music! My last band of the month was Back in Black at Blarney’s in Mechanicsburg. I haven’t seen these guys in a very long time, and it was just what the doctor ordered, a night of some good old, heavy rock n’ roll! It’s hard watching them in such a tiny venue like Blarney’s, it really makes me miss Tubby’s even more! (From a distance the other day it looked like there might’ve been some kind of construction crane near Tubby’s, I definitely hope that’s what I saw, and hopefully they are still planning on rebuilding bigger and better…) But for the time being, I am just grateful that Back in Black is willing to make the commute and come down to the burg from Massachusetts and play in such a small space. Blarney’s is another place I wish I could convince to advertise. They take the time and energy to book bands at their venue, but then they don’t promote their shows anywhere. It’s sort of sad. It’s a gorgeous venue and they have a lot of potential, but half of the people don’t even know where Blarney’s is. Blarney’s is the old “Wanda’s”, “West Shore Hardware Bar”, etc. etc. It’s changed it’s name and set up so many times, it is truly hard to keep track of not only what it’s called, but what’s happening over there. Anywho.. back to the music. Back in Black as always puts on an amazing show. Dan “Angus” is absolutely crazy on guitar, by the end of the night his knees were all beat up from all of his duck walking and throwing himself down on the stage, jumping in the air, etc. He didn’t let the limited space stop him, he was all over the place! Tony’s vocal range and his ability to cover all of your favorite AC/DC songs, young and old, is amazing. They were rockin’ their new American Flag backdrop. It looked really nice and fit perfectly on the back of Blarney’s stage. Congrats again to Tony and Roxy on their new grandbaby Auggie!! He is so stinkin precious and Tony is one proud Pappy! We want to welcome Yak Bone to our pages as well as Suicide Puppets this month. Did you notice Yakbone is on the cover?!? We were actually going to put Stonerook on the cover but couldn’t get it together with Dan in short notice so than we asked Amanda + The Noise as they have been advertising for a while but Patty (who is in the band) has also started a new project, Yak Bone and preferred them to be featured on the cover and they were able to get everyone togeether in a few days for a pic and interview. (Thank you). We try to accomodate our clients wishes. Make sure and check out Yak Bone’s cover story and check out this new and upcoming acoustic act. I can’t wait to see their show live and in action! Fewer and fewer bands are choosing to advertise in the PA Mu sician Magazine. It’s amazing how many bands have used our pages to promote their business: Green Eggs, Emily’s Toybox, The Sharks, Halestorm, Smooth Like Clyde, Screaming Daisys, etc… Do you know what all of these bands have in common?? They all ADVERTISED for YEARS! When I ask some of them why don’t you still advertise? Their response is that the magazine served it’s purpose and they have a big enough fan base now, they don’t need us any more or they don’t have the money because their crowds aren’t as big as they use to be and they don’t get paid enough. (hmm). Do you know what else all of these bands have in common?? they still play in the area, just a lot of people don’t know they are still around or where they are playing. Do you know why?? Because they STOPPED advertising! I wish people would feel that Facebook isn’t their only answer for promoting their shows. Facebook takes over such control about who sees your posts, when, how often, if ever, etc. Our readers see all of our advertisers every month. We don’t block anyone from advertising, if you have a band or business that would like to promote themselves, give us a call at 717444-2423. We also share all of your events, etc on our Facebook page as an added bonus plus the entire paper is placed on the web for we know many people prefer to read the magazine on continued on next page...

their devices. Now the only way we can share your event on our page is if we actually see it, sometimes unfortunately, we do miss some events. We also have business card sized ads for only $30/month! If you’re going to take the time and money to buy equipment, form a band, and play gigs, do yourself a favor and promote yourself. End rant… Well that’s all for me this month. I am very grateful to 5 Hour Energy for helping me write this article, and thankfully they come in 2 packs, so I can drink the next one mid-afternoon tomorrow at work! Ha! I hope you all have a fabulous month filled with music, happiness and love! Remember to live every day to it’s fullest, and hug everyone you love, if they are too far away to hug, give them a call and let them know how much you love them. If you see me Out and About, please stop me and say Hi! I love meeting my readers! Support Live, Local Music!!!!!
NATIONALS By Eric Hoffman
Greetings Rockers ‘N’ Rollers! THIS MONTH Tuesday October 17th, please mark your calendar! I will be promoting my second ever National concert at HMAC. The group known as Crocodiles are an indie noise pop band originally from San Diego. Amazing rock ‘n’ roll that I believe in and highly recommend for fans of The Jesus & Mary Chain, The Archies and Tommy James & The Shondells. Also, on the bill are great locals Jet Silver and Timmy’s Creep Show. I would be beyond grateful for your support, please contact me 717-219-9433 if interested in purchasing a ticket. Also, if you come to the show, find me and mention a secret word “Dreamless” for a gift from myself. The past month started with an epic event at The Vineyard at Hershey featuring Blues Traveler, Gin Blossoms and Spin Doctors. Although the exact number is not known, the crowd may have exceeded 8,000 fans. The Vineyard did their best to handle the massive attendance and resulted in a great success. The inaugural Summer event brought Everclear last year. Depeche Mode brought their current Global Spirit Tour to Washington DC on September 7th. It had been four years since the alternative band toured America. The English group known for their synth-rock may have been most popular in the 90’s but time hasn’t deterred their incredible fan base by selling out huge arenas. Depeche Mode had the entire audience dancing with essentials like “Personal Jesus,” “Enjoy the Silence” and a brilliant over of David Bowie’s “Heroes.” The fabulous punk band Teenage Bottlerocket blew thru Baltimore’s Ottobar recently. The band’s music is heavily influenced by The Ramones and Misfits. Sadly, Teenage Bottlerocket drummer and founder Brandon Carlisle died in 2015, this was TBR first tour with new drummer Darren Chewka. The group recently released their seventh studio album titled, “Stealing the Covers,” in which TBR put their unique twist on songs from obscure and unsigned bands that have caught their fancy over the years. Tellus360 in Lancaster brought the return of Har Mar Superstar to the mid-state on Sept 13. The singer-songwriter is currently touring supporting his album “Best Summer Ever” and has enlisted five other musicians to bring the songs to life. Har Mar Superstar is a character who, although overweight, often performs his show nearly nude, and appears obsessed with his own sexual prowess. His primary musical genre is contemporary R&B and a bit reminiscent of Stevie Wonder Har Mar Superstar has toured with friends: The Strokes, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Father John Misty, Incubus, Red Hot Chili Peppers to name a few. His last two albums were released on Julian Casablancas’ (The Strokes) label

classification of ICP fans as a “loosely organized hybrid gang.” The Juggalos reportedly dwarfed other protest groups on the day, which included President Trump supporters gathered on the Washington Mall and a small group demanding action against the Russian government in Lafayette Square Park. Linkin Park are holding a special tribute show honoring lead vocalist Chester Bennington. The one-night-only celebration of the singer/songwriter is scheduled Oct. 27 at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles. The event marks the first time the remaining members of Linkin Park have taken the stage together since Bennington’s death on July 20th. The musicians will be donating their fees from the concert to Music For Relief’s One More Light Fund in memory of Bennington. The lineup will also feature a number of other yet-to-be announced artists. Bennington was found dead at his home in Palos Verdes Estates, California. The death was ruled a suicide. Lady Gaga has postponed her world tour’s European leg until next year because of ongoing health problems. The tour’s promoter Live Nation stated “Lady Gaga is suffering from severe physical pain that has impacted her ability to perform, she remains under the care of expert medical professionals who recommended the postponement.” The 31-year-old singer-songwriter “plans to spend the next seven weeks proactively working with her doctors to heal from this and past traumas that still affect her daily life, and result in severe physical pain in her body.” Lady Gaga said that’s she been honest about her “physical and mental health struggles” and has been “searching for years to get to the bottom of them.” “As I get stronger and when I feel ready, I will tell my story in more depth, and plan to take this on strongly so I can not only raise awareness, but expand research for others who suffer as I do, so I can help make a difference.” U2 canceled its recent concert in St. Louis after police told concert organizers that they couldn’t provide a typical level of security because of protests. Hundreds marched after a judge acquitted a white former St. Louis police officer in the 2011 shooting death of a black suspect. Patty Wilson Yak Bone? Who is Yak Bone? Well, let me tell you, Yak Bone is a perfect example that it’s never too early to start promoting your band. As soon as you have confidence that you can get out there and play to a crowd, you have to let people know you exist, you have to prove that you are confident enough in your abilities to rock the world one gig at a time, that you are willing to promote yourself. Some people might say they are putting the cart before the Yak, but you have to get started somewhere. They actually started quite a while ago, they’ve been practicing as a trio and developing their set list for almost a year and they are ready to get on stage to share their music with lovers of live acoustic music. Patty Wilson and Rochelle Smith have been good friends and band mates for quite a few years. One day they were shopping at The Green Dragon in Lancaster, and there was a lady selling jewelry made out of Yak Bones. As soon as they saw it they said, “Yak Bone would be a cool name for a band.” That gave them just the itch they needed to get their project started. They immediately reached out to their long time friend and fellow musician, Sandi Robinson, about joining them, and her response was, “Well “yeah.. duh!” and from then on Yak Bone has been carving their way to being a successful acoustic trio. Rochelle (Ro) is loving the opportunity to occasionally put down the heavy, electric guitar and play her very light six string acoustic guitar. She is still playing the electric guitar in her other band, Take 147. Since Take 147 isn’t playing as often as they used to, Ro had too much free time and decided she needed another project to work on. Patty, the percussion princess, is also taking a break from rockin’ out on her full kit and plays the d’jembe, and many other small percussion instruments throughout the show. She also still rocks out on the full kit with her other band, Amanda & the Noise. Last but not least, the one with the most strings, is Sandi and her 12 string baby. Sandi has played with Dirty Little Secret, and also has another band with her friend Rachel, Sxrchxx. None of them are leaving their current projects, they are just adding another band to their repertoire. Ro is the main lead vocalist, but Patty does sing quite a few songs too. Ultimately they want to get Sandi singing too, but right now she is just focusing on all of those strings! For the interview, I was able to go hang out with them at their practice. Just from the décor of their practice space, I could tell they were going to be an interesting October, 2017

bunch, with everything from mermaids to skulls, and all kinds of stuff in between hanging on the walls and on the shelves. They also had many different types of instruments, so I’m sure in the future it wouldn’t be too shocking if some of their songs include some ukulele, bass, or even click tracks. They try to practice weekly as much as possible so they can constantly be learning new songs. They pretty much play anything and everything fast or slow, old or new, from the 70’s all the way up to today. They are trying to play different songs than all of their other projects, but some do overlap, they are just different versions of the songs since this is solely an acoustic project. They are also working on originals! Ro already wrote one new song, but they also play “Lonely Girl” from her band Take 147, since Ro did write that one. Patty is also working on originals. She recently got her own studio program on her laptop that she’s been having fun recording and overlapping multiple tracks and keeping things interesting and crazy! One thing they are hoping to do is keep their show very interactive and fun! They don’t want to be a stuffy dinner hour acoustic act, they want to be the “Happy Ending” after show! This project is all about having fun! None of them would’ve joined an “extra” project if it wasn’t going to be fun and different. They actually don’t have their first official show until November 11th with Fierce and On-Stride at the Hurricane Pizza Grill in Columbia. We know that is Pennsylvania Musician Magazine

a very long time away from now, but in the mean time they plan on hitting up some Open Mics and getting their show on the road! They really are just getting started, but they really hope by promoting their new project they will get even more shows booked for the rest of the year, and even through 2018! The best part about having just a little acoustic act there are so many more venues to play at. The big stages are getting fewer and farther in between. If you are really impatient, you can catch Patty’s band, Amanda & the Noise, October 20th, at the Kaleidoscope in Lancaster, or you can catch Ro’s band, Take 147, at Joe K’s Brewhouse on Union Deposit here in Harrisburg, on October 27th. If you would like to get Yak Bone booked at your venue or special event, you can reach out to Ro on Facebook Messenger through their facebook page: facebook.com/bonearound11. You can also reach them via e-mail at yakboneband@ gmail.com. They wanted to make sure and thank all of their amazing wives for supporting them starting yet another project! It really means a lot to them all to have love and support from their family and friends. We haven’t quite figured out a name for their fans yet, calling them “Boners” doesn’t seem quite appropriate, but I’m sure they will figure out something clever as they get to know them a little bit better. Til then people it’s time to “Bone Up!” Check them out at Facebook.com/bonearound11, become their friend and check out their video clips, trust me this crew knows how to make you laugh! 13

Kody Templeman (Teenage Bottlerocket) and Tommy Presite (Strangest Hearts) & Eric D and others, claiming he’s owed money and property rights for his work with the pioneering hip-hop act and use of his image. Flavor Flav – real name William Drayton – also claims merchandising deals were made without his consent or compensation and that his role in the band has been diminished. “Despite Drayton’s position in Public Enemy, the group’s management and related companies have for years attempted to minimize his role in the Public Enemy business, while continuing to rely upon Drayton’s fame and persona to market the brand,” court documents cited. Flav alleges that although he and Chuck D – real name Carlton Ridenhour – have agreed profits from Public Enemy would be shared between them, but that payments have “diminished to almost nothing.” Drayton requested a $75,000 fee for recording PE’s June album release, Nothing Is Quick in the Desert, but received only $7,500. Bob Dylan and His Band have lined up dates, including Philadelphia’s Tower Theatre Nov 11 & 12 and Washington DC’s Anthem Nov 14. Mavis Staples is coming along for all the stops. Dylan is in the middle of a full touring cycle, as he just released the three-disc album of classic American songs, Triplicate, in August . The year has been good for Dylan as reports show he has sold 92 percent of his available tickets in 2017.

The outdoor live music season has entered its homestretch, with a few more fall festivals and late season outdoor concerts remaining before everything heads back indoors. County fair and festival activity continued in recent weeks. One year ago, local country singer/songwriter Josh Gallagher started his run on Season 11 of NBC Television’s The Voice, punching his ticket to the season’s finale, national notoriety and a fourth-place finish. The Cresson native and his Nashville-based band were greeted by a huge and joyous regional crowd when they performed during last month’s American Legion County Fair (formerly the Cambria County Fair) in Ebensburg. Josh explained to the audience that seeing country star Dustin Lynch perform at this fair four years earlier inspired his own dream of someday performing on the same stage, with that dream reaching fruition this night. Flanked by guitarists Johnny Meyers and Spencer Wade, steel guitar player Cody McKinney, bassist Joe Birmingham and drummer Andrew Bone, Josh performed many of his original songs, along with a few select country favorites. Josh brought resounding cheers with each song he and his band did – including “Overtime,” his breakthrough song on The Voice “Stay A Little Longer,” “No Turning Around,” “Ain’t No
Angels,” “Lovin’ On You,” “This Town Shouldn’t Sell Beer,” “Make Believe,” “Real Good Man” and more. He introduced new songs such as “Ain’t As Tough As I Think I Am” and “How About You.” Josh paid homage to Dustin Lynch with his own version of “That’s Where It’s At,” and did renditions of Eric Church’s “Homeboy,” Kenny Loggins’ “Danny’s Song” and Brooks & Dunn’s “Boot Scootin’ Boogie.” Josh and his band kept the audience at a feverish high clear to the end, when he finished his performance with another highlight song from his run on The Voice, “Pick Any Small Town.” Josh’s friend Sundance Head, the winner from Season 11 of The Voice, also performed in the area last month with a concert at Altoona’s Mishler Theatre. THE PROFESSOR continued,,,, last month’s annual Northern Appalachian Folk Festival in downtown Indiana. I was able to take in some of the Saturday afternoon entertainment on two stages, beginning with The Pack A.D. From Vancouver, the duo of singer/guitarist Becky Black and drummer/singer Maya Miller brought a big garage/ punk rock sound, as they performed a high-velocity set of original songs. The Pack A.D. combined melodies with a blistering, brash presentation and a touch of wit as they plowed through original numbers such as ”Animal,” “Deer,” “Yes, I Know,” a request for their song “Needles” and more. I then checked out New York-based solo performer J.R. Linaberry, whose stage persona is The Bones Of J.R. Jones. Armed with resonator guitar and bass drum, J.R. performed original electric delta-style blues, working up a fury on numbers such as “The Heat,” “The Dark,” “Good Friend of Mine,” “Sing Sing,” a rendition of R.L. Burnside’s “Poor Black Mattie” and more. And I caught some of Patty Larkin’s performance. Performing both on acoustic and electric guitars, Patty sang with a clear, expressive voice as she presented folk-based songs from throughout her catalog. She shared insight on her songs, which presented observational and personal lyrical themes; some of Patty’s numbers this day included a song inspired by an ex-husband, “Johnny Was a Pyro,” along with “Best Of Intentions,” “I Told Him That My Dog Wouldn’t Run,” “It Could Be Worse,” “Dear Heart” and more. I also had briefly seen Texas duo Whiskey Dick at the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival, but power issues at their stage curtailed their performance and relegated them to stepping off stage and performing to fans totally uuplugged and without amplification. But I would get my chance to witness Whiskey Dick plugged-in the following night at McGarvey’s in Altoona, as they were part of a captivating four-band/performer bill. Washington (state)-based singer/songwriter James Hunnicutt (who also performed at the Northern Appalachian Folk Festival earlier that day) led off the night. James sang with a bold, resonant, clear, full vocal range packed with purpose as he blended folkflavored original songs with select roots country and rock covers from Porter Wagoner, the Wilburn Brothers and Eddie Cochran. He held everybody’s strict attention from start to end as he did songs such as “Dying Healer Waltz,” “The Cold Hard Facts of Life,” “Never Meant,” “Risk the Fall” and more. Whiskey Dick – the duo of singer/guitarist Fritz and lead guitarist Reverend – then presented their brand of acoustic “heavy metal honky tonk.” Whiskey Dick slammed rowdy, high-powered original odes about life, drinking, heroes and more. Fritz delivered a raw, scathing snarl rooted somewhere between David Allen Coe and Phil Anselmo, while Reverend demonstrated some amazing lead guitar solo work. Songs like “Bastard Sons of Texas,” “Horse Made of Acid,” “Yeehaw” and more kept the crowd raucous and rowdy, and the pair also dedicated “Fallen Heroes” in memory of Pantera guitarist Dimebag Darrell. Next, showing that punk rock and American roots influences stretch globally, Hungarian punk/roots rockers The Silver Shine then stormed the stage and fired up the crowd with their rowdy set. Touring the country with The Rocketz (the fourth band of the night), the Budapest-based trio of singer/guitarist Ati Edge, singer/upright bassist Krista Kat and drummer Peete Jones played fiery original tunes and amped-up covers. Their style blended punk, rockabilly/psychobilly and surf rock; some of their tunes included “One Mile From Heaven” and “Just Make Your Guns” (off their new CD Reloaded), plus rowdy takes on Dolly Parton’s “Jolene,” Janis Joplin’s “Mercedes Benz,” and Ati leading the crowd on a fiery sing-along version of “Got My Mojo Working” to close the set. Los Angeles-based punk/psychobilly trio The Rocketz then launched the night’s slamming finale, delivering total velocity and fun with their blend of spit and swagger on odes to drinking, fast living and more. Singer/ guitarist Tony Slash, upright “slap” bassist Chango and drummer Anthony Drinkwater kept it lively and exciting; highlights included James Hunnicutt returning to sing lead on amped-up versions of Gene Vincent’s “Be-Bop-a-Lula” and Junior Parker/ Elvis’ “Mystery Train,” the group tailoring their song “East LA” to the Altoona crowd as “East Altoona,” and their glorious beerthemed set closer, “Label on the Bottle.” Johnstown has been a busy place for live music in recent weeks. The Eric Tessmer Band returned to the Flood City last month to deliver their blues-rock firestorm at People’s Natural Gas Park. The Derek Woods Band kicked off the night with their own energetic mixture of rock, funk and blues. Harrisburg’s Yam Yam then finished up the evening on this stage with their mixture of funk, jazz and jam elements. Comprised of guitarist/singer Tom Fuller, drummer Tyler Fuller, keyboardist/ singer Mike Dempsey, bassist Xander Moppin and sax player Jason Mescia; Yam Yam cooked up plenty of tasty original grooves that triggered dance action in front of the stage. They also broke out an upbeat update of the Jackson 5’s “I Want You Back.” Afterward, I headed inside Ace’s Lounge to see the last two sets of Undercover’s dance-rock party. Singer Jason Riek, guitarist/singer JJ Mason, bassist Barron Shipley and drummer Vince Spino kept Ace’s dance floor busy with their uptempo blend of current and classic rock and dance hits. Undercover provided nonstop music with tunes from Walk the Moon, Bryan Adams, Prince, Journey, Bruno Mars, DNCE and more. When I returned to Cambria City Ethnic Festival on Sunday, the weather was much improved, so I was able to catch performers on several of the other outdoor live stages, starting with Tree at the ACRP stage. As I enjoyed a stuffed hot pepper sandwich Dana & Art Martino of DD & The Pub Crawlers vorful guitar leads and solos to George Hilf’s inventive key- and a bottle of Irish Harp lager, singer/guitarist Matt Harnett, fidboard fills, to the punchy drum work of Justin Landers and lean dler Jen Harnett and drummer Mike Dixon mixed Irish-flavored bass lines of Chris Schaney. They warmed up a decent-sized rock and folk favorites, along with a few traditional folk numcrowd with a number of original tunes, including songs from their Taste EP such as “Don’t Look Away” and the extended “Much Better Now,” some newer songs, and inspired takes on Bob Dylan’s “Like a Rolling Stone,” the Allman Brothers’ “One Way Out,” the Doobie Brothers’ “Listen to the Music” and the set-ending edition of The Band’s “The Weight.” Picking up the torch from blues-rock guitar legends like Jimi Hendrix and Stevie Ray Vaughan, Texas’ Eric Tessmer put on a guitar clinic from the get-go of his band’s set, displaying fierce shredding, distortion barrages, behind-the-back soloing and more! His band was top notch – Gian Ortiz did busy, precise finger work on his bass strings to complement whatever Eric was doing, and drummer Marc Redix’s powerhouse rhythms added drive and purpose to each song. Eric performed many of his own originals, from catchy vocal numbers to dazzling instrumentals. And he paid homage to Jimi Hendrix several times during his set, lighting up the stage with takes on “Are You Experienced” and the explosive set-ending version of “Voodoo Chile,” where he ripped the guts (strings) out of his weathered 1959 Fender StraDD & the Pub Crawlers Horn Section... tocaster! He then brandished his other Stratocaster to give the bers. Among Tree’s song selection were versions of Flogging crowd “one more for the hardcores...” – a powerful rendition of Molly’s “Drunken Lullabies,” “Nancy Whiskey,” Whiskey in “Little Wing” to end the night. the Jar,” Steve Earle’s “Galway Girl,” “Ramblin’ Rover” and As always, Labor Day weekend meant my annual pilgrimage more. I then headed to the Holy Cross stage, where Rosie & the to Johnstown’s Cambria City neighborhood for another edition Jammers were finishing up their performance. Namesake Rosie of the Cambria City Ethnic Festival. I attended both Saturday Sida on keys, Jim Mosey on vocals and guitar, Eric Furfari on and Sunday this year; with rains from the former Hurricane Haraccordion and vocals, and Brian Anater and Brian Regala on vey deluging the area on Saturday, I caught several acts in the saxophones mixed up a variety of polkas, pop standards and dryness under the tent at the Ethnic Fest Block Party on 3rd other favorites. The group did polka favorites like “In Heaven Ave., presented by the Venue Of Merging Arts (VOMA) and There Is No Beer,” and Eric sang lead as he converted the everthe BottleWorks Ethnic Arts Center. I arrived in time to catch popular “Wagon Wheel” into a polka! Jim displayed an excelthe last few songs from western PA-based funk/jam rockers Halent voice on Ronnie Milsap’s “It Was Almost Like a Song,” batat, who generated feisty grooves on their selection of original and the group ended their set with Willie Nelson’s “On the Road songs. My favorite new discovery during this year’s Ethnic FesAgain.” Keeping with tradition, I had to indulge my most antival was the next group, Pittsburgh’s Funky Fly Project. Comticipated culinary moment during each year’s Ethnic Festival, prised of four youngsters all under the age of 18, Funky Fly feasting on the St. Mary’s Church Polish “grand slam” of a kolProject displayed some amazing talent and poise on their instrubasi and sauerkraut sandwich, halushki, halupki and pierogies. ments. These guys were fearless – saxophonist Winston Bell, This year, though, I enjoyed this platter while being entertained keyboardist Henry Schultz, bassist Eric Dowdell, Jr. and drumby Felix & the Hurricanes on the church’s trailer stage. Lead mer Brandon Terry (just 12 years old!) dazzled the audience Hurricane and guitarist Felix Kos, bassist/singer Jeff Clapper with their blend of instrumental original compositions, plus and drummer Bob Watters mixed original song favorites with jazz/funk-driven takes on popular numbers. My favorite higha variety of classic rock numbers from America, Badfinger, the lights from their set included inventive arrangements of “My Beatles, Allman Brothers, ZZ Top, Eric Clapton, Boz Scaggs Favorite Things” and The Buckinghams’ 1967 hit “Mercy Merand more. I then headed back to the Ethnic Fest Block Party cy Mercy.” Funky Fly Project provided evidence that the future tent to see the final group of this year’s festival, Johnstown jazz of live music is in good hands – watch out for these youngsters! performers The John Bagnato Group. This group focused on Brazilian-styled jazz this night, and welcomed guest Frank Filia to sing lead on several numbers toward set’s end. Following the conclusion of Cambria City Ethnic Festival, I headed to Johnstown’s Southmont Gardens, where Pittsburgh legend Norman Nardini and his band provided the musical fun. Norman and his band – Harry Bottoms on bass, Larry Siefers on keys, sax and harmonica, and Mike Floccari on drums – played for three hours nonstop as they mixed up newer and older favorites, punctuated by Norman’s humor and wit between songs. Song highlights included Norman’s ode to hooking up with a female cop, called “Messin’ With the Law,” “Pittsburgh PA” converted into “Johnstown PA,” Norman referencing current and recent news events on “Game On,” and “Three Times Your Fool,” which D.C. blues legends The Nighthawks are recording for their new album All You Gotta Do. Norman and his

band welcomed two popular local guitarists on stage, as Gene Sweeney worked guitar strings on “She’s Crazy” and “I Hate a Nickel,” and Mark Middleton added his guitar skills to an instrumental version of The Buckinghams’ “Mercy Mercy Mercy” and the Rolling Stones’ “Honky Tonk Women.” Hastings in northern Cambria County was again partying down in late August during the annual St. Bernard Parish Homecoming celebration. I caught entertainment during the festival’s final day, Sunday, starting with Disorganized Crime, the duo of singer, guitarist and harmonica player Rick Ramsey and percussionist and singer Ed Hofer. They had fun mixing up a wide variety of tunes spanning rock, pop and country favorites. Rick followed his muse throughout the afternoon, with Ed shifting rhythms on the fly for whatever Rick threw at him. The two drew cheers and occasional dancers with tunes from Gordon Lightfoot, Johnny Cash, John Mellencamp, Waylon Jennings, Men At Work, U2, Beatles, Hank Jr., Elvis, Bruce Springsteen, Tesla and many more. For the nightcap, Johnstown brass rock ensemble Flood City Brass – ten musicians strong this night – mixed up rock, funk and soul hits. Singers Tom Pavic and Natalie Kurchak both showed great voices up front, with drummer John Homerski singing out impressive voice on a few tunes as well. Instrumentally this group dazzled as well – Jen Shuty delivered some great sax solos on a few numbers, and guitarist Randy Rutherford shined with his guitar skills, especially on Flood City Brass’ take on Steely Dan’s “My Old School.” Randy even showed his trombone skills on the night’s last song, the Johnfronted edition of the Doobie Brothers’ “Long Train Runnin!’” Flood City Brass kept the dance area filled through much of the evening with favorites from the Sanford Townsend Band, Katrina & the Waves, Bruce Springsteen, Donna Summer, Van Morrison, LaBelle, Aretha Franklin, Doors, Bruno Mars, B52s, Wilson Pickett, Abba, Neil Diamond, Sister Sledge, Gloria Gaynor and more. This month, Flood City Brass will provide entertainment as part of the Fort Ligonier Days Festival in downtown Ligonier on Oct. 15. Craft brew enthusiasts again converged upon Altoona’s Railroaders Museum in late August for the annual Rails and Ales Brewfest, with proceeds benefiting Altoona Community Theatre. Brewers presented more than 80 of their craft brew creations for sampling, while The Crew Of The Half Moon and DD & the Pub Crawlers provided the live musical entertainment. (Two-thirds of Born & the Beanstalk – the Ed n’Born duo of percussionist Ed Hofer and singer/guitarist Sean “Born” Osborn – entertained during a special VIP sampling before the public event.) Taking the rail flatcar stage first, The Crew Of The Half Moon – singers/multi-instrumentalists Katie Rhodes and Dan Oatman plus drummer Jon Beard – mixed an eclectic array of original songs, modern and classic rock/pop favorites. The group tapped numbers from their latest Blanket Fort Radio album such as “Stark Lost Lovers,” performed several songs from the Beatles, and presented their unique takes on The Wallflowers’ “One Headlight,” The Verve’s “Bittersweet Symphony,” REM’s “Losing My Religion,” an exceptional rendition of Jefferson Airplane’s “Somebody to Love” and more. DD & the Pub Crawlers then struck up their brass-edged party, throwing down a mixture of rock’n’roll, blues, funk, ska, swing sounds and more. Singer continued on next page...

Dana “DD” Martino, bassist/singer Art Martino, guitarist Jim Howsare, keyboardist Tim Boland, drummer Todd Harshbarger and the four-piece horn section of sax players Anthony Martino and Lyndsay Reilly, trumpet player Adam Lingenfelter and trombonist Nick Martino kept the music and excitement constant. Some of their highlights included a version of Labelle’s “Lady Marmalade” with a Santana “Evil Ways” midsection, guest drummer Kevin Siegel packing the beats behind Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love,” the brass section cutting loose on “Land of 1,000 Dances,” and the group swinging out on Cherry Poppin’ Daddies’ “Zoot Suit Riot.” I also saw Todd Harshbarger in action the following day as he provided the drumbeats behind Shallow 9 during their Sunday Funday boat cruise aboard the Proud Mary riverboat on Lake Raystown. This fun afternoon began with a picnic under a pavilion, before the fun then moved onto the Proud Mary and “set sail” for a two-hour journey around the lake, with Shallow 9 playing on the boat’s upper deck. Singer Erika Marino, guitarists Tucker Landis and Ryan Weaver, bassist Mitch Neuder and Todd on drums fired up the party, mixing up rock, pop, funk and hip-hop favorites that soon triggered happy dancing on the deck. Shallow 9 kept boat passengers happy with hits from Amy Winehouse, Cee-Lo Green, Pat Benatar, Sublime, Paula Abdul, Lady Gaga, DNCE and many more. Guest Mike Stanley multitasked several times during the show, voicing several hip-hop rants while running sound with a hand-held mixer at the same time. Shallow 9 amped up the party with some nonstop medleys along the way, and the fun was constant clear until the boat arrived back at the dock. I caught my first look at The Reflections last month as they entertained during the annual New Germany Festival of Arts & Crafts at New Germany Grove in Cambria County. From Johnstown, The Reflections – singer Kim Miller, lead guitarist/singer Pat Mollohan, rhythm guitarist/singer Chuck Glacken, bassist Bobby Palmer and drummer John Kot – specialize in dancefriendly rock and pop hits from the 1960s through 1980s. They delivered a wide mixture of sounds this day, spanning hits by the Beatles, Martha & the Vandellas, Tommy James, Mitch Ryder, Del Shannon, CCR, Tom Petty, the Kingsmen, The Doors, Nancy Sinatra and more. Doing most of the singing, Kim provided a potent and clear voice up front, with the rest of the band supporting her with solid instrumental backdrops. The Reflections kept folks dancing and having a good time throughout their performance. Back indoors, I caught several other shows at McGarvey’s in recent weeks, including last month’s return of Virginia-based string band the Hackensaw Boys. Opening the night was the debut of a new local bluegrass-geared group, Black Ridge, who did a short set of punk-fueled bluegrass and folk. Despite some sound issues, Black Ridge’s first set was a good start. The Hackensaw Boys then performed their brand of traditional folk and bluegrass before a large audience. The group did a selection of their original songs, and frequently showed their instrumental chops, especially fiddler Ferd Moyse, whose skills shined on nearly every song. Again I found myself fascinated with Brian Gorby’s unique percussion contraption, the “charismo,” which contains several tin cans and other household items fused together; he used brushes on them to provide the rhythms. The Hackensaw Boys played their primary set on stage through the sound system; after short break, the group brought their instruments out onto the floor and into the crowd and played completely unplugged to finish the night. The Hackensaw Boys embark on a European tour later this month, performing show dates in The Netherlands and Spain. McGarvey’s also hosted an entertaining, hard-rocking triplebill in late August. Altoona punk rocking favorites X’s For Eyes
led off the night with their high-velocity, thrashing punk sounds. Guitarists/singers Tom Noel and Tim Mort, bassist/singer Oob and drummer Justin Fair awakened the house with their bristling array of original tunes, flooring the accelerator and never letting up. Pittsburgh pirates then stormed the stage, as The Bloody Seamen – decked in full swashbuckling gear – fired off rowdy and rocking pirate-themed original tunes, amped-up drinking songs and seafaring takes on rock and metal favorites. Armed with a keyboard/accordion player and a concertina player this night, the Seamen plundered the house with tunes off their latest CD Sail Hatin’ such as “Bullets An’ Brine,” did a Motorhead “Ace of Spades” spin on Disney’s “Under the Sea,” and hijacked Black Sabbath’s “Supernaut” into their own buccaneering adaptation, called “Super Yacht.” Beyond the swashbuckling theatrics, The Bloody Seamen delivered tight and full-force instrumental execution; and booming out full voice, Cap’n Blackguts gloriously kept the attention riveted toward the stage for the entire set, earning a hearty “ARRRRRR!!!” from the audience. After the plunder, The Lurking Corpses soon were strewn on the stage to finish the night with monster and horror-themed thrash/death-flavored metal. Decked in face masks and black druid hoods and capes, the Fort Wayne, Indiana-based cast of Lord Vladimir Von Ghoul, Cousin Eerie, The Nameless Horror and Friar Frightengale blasted multiple original horror assaults, including several from their latest CD Lust for Blood such as
Eric Dowdell, Jr. of Funky Fly Project
“Mark of the Devil,” “Orgy in the Mausoleum” and more. Lord Vladimir’s humorous, ghoul-edged cackle between songs kept the vibe from ever becoming too dark or serious, and The Lurking Corpses kept the McGarvey’s crowd cheering until the end. Pittsburgh’s Bastard Bearded Irishmen returned to McGarvey’s in late August with their high-velocity Irish-flavored sounds. The Lurking Corpses
Flood City Brass horn section Jimmy Bastard, mandolinist Danny Rectenwald, fiddler Paul Dvorchak, bassist Ben Jaber, rhythm guitarist Ryan Warmbrodt and drummer Dan Stocker – mixed up high-powered original songs with high-velocity Irish-flavored takes on traditional and popular numbers. Delivered with fast-paced, high-flying action and even instrument-swapping onstage, some highlights included drinking odes like “Whiskey, Rum, Bourbon, Beer” and “Bartender’s Friend,” an amped-up Irish take on Aha’s 1980s hit “Take On Me,” and Jimmy’s accelerating a cappella rendition of “The Rattlin’ Bog.” When the crowd called for an encore, Bastard Bearded Irishmen responded with their Irishedged take on Guns N’Roses’ “Sweet Child Of Mine” and another rowdy original drinking ode, “F*** You I’m Drunk.” And I saw Johnstown trio The Cheeze as they entertained last month at Johnstown’s Ohio Street Lounge. Singer/bassist Scott Barkhimer, guitarist/singer James Forish and drummer Mike Curry dished out hearty portions of ‘80s rock and pop gems, with a few non-‘80s classics and surprises thrown in. Tunes from Bryan Adams, Tone Loc, Honeymoon Suite, Poison, Motley Crue, Georgia Satellites, Prince and more filled the evening. One highlight included the group’s take on Pink Floyd’s “Another Brick in the Wall,” which morphed into the midsection of Peter Frampton’s “Do You Feel Like We Do” with James utilizing the guitar talkbox. Other performers I saw recently included Ron “Music Man” Balestino at Altoona’s Family Pizza & Pub, Force Of Habit during Huntingdon’s Wine Down celebration, Backlash – with new bassist Andy Krishak – at The Arena in State College, Mama Corn at last month’s Downtown Night Market event at downtown Altoona’s Heritage Plaza, singers Daniela Pasquini and Marco Fiorenta during the annual Italian Food & Heritage Festival at Delgrosso’s Amusement Park in Tipton, and recent McGarvey’s appearances by D.C. indie-rockers In Your Memory, up-and-coming State College rockers The Roof and acoustic performer Jae Smith.
News and notes…Pantera tribute Penntera, Agent Smith and their “Agent In Chains” Alice In Chains tribute provide some of the musical highlights during the second annual Zombietown USA celebration; Altoona’s zombie apocalypse festival happens Oct. 6-7 in downtown Altoona…CJ Ramone and Michale Graves pair up for the first time ever at McGarvey’s on Oct. 7, with opening acts X’s For Eyes, Railroad City Murder Machines and The Legendary Hucklebucks…Natascha & the Spy Boys are slated to issue their first full-length CD, That’s the Hardest Part…, later this month…Altoona guitarist Tom Brown has released the latest album from his long-running studio project Pensive Fear, entitled The Awakening…and we at PA Musician extend speedy get-well wishes to Small Town Horror Show keyboardist Mike Henneman, who has been logging hospital time recently. Please send correspondence and recordings to: Jim Price, 1104 S. Catherine St., Altoona, PA 16602. You can also e-mail me at jptheprofessor@gmail.com. Reasons why you should go to conferences is the topic for this month. I myself love to go to conferences, time and money willing, also love to do seminars. So what can you expect when you go to a conference and what makes them great? 1. You get exposed to new ideas and techniques. The creativity at these events is unreal. I love being around creative thinkers… it can really get your own creative juices flowing. 2. You get to meet and network with others who are interested in the same things you are. It can be a great morale booster. Meeting like-minded people not only inspires you, but it creates an opportunity to build partnerships and joint venture opportunities. 3. Conferences can help you regain your focus. 4. It’s a great way to connect with old and new friends. 5. They help you realize that everyone has struggles and many times you can find out about new ideas or systems that might work for you. 6. Attending conferences can greatly improve your productivity. 7. You get to meet the experts and mentors face to face. It’s good to connect through email, it is better to connect on the phone, but the best way to connect is face to face, and always will be. At the events I attend, conference speakers are usually available to chat and answer questions.
PA MUSICIAN REVIEWS By Jim Price
TED McCLOSKEY – LAST FLOWER STANDING (Voodoo Cat Records) Ted McCloskey has established himself as one of the state’s most prolific musicians, creating nine albums of original music in 15 years. On his ninth and latest album, Last Flower Standing, he continues to establish himself as a musical chameleon as well, as he mixes multiple flavors into the disc’s 14 tracks, again successfully defying categorization. Delta blues and Beatles-rooted pop provide prominent launching points throughout the disc, with rockabilly, folk, R&B and psychedelic flourishes also incorporated along the way. Ted’s knacks for catchy song hooks and smart lyricism are abundant here; the album follows a loose theme
of flowers providing metaphors for lives and souls that bloom, fade, survive and die, and Ted also provides revealing snapshots of his own persona as well. The slow-building disc-opener “How Many More?” finds Ted drinking and smoking away a past memory, while the Americana-infused “The Presence of Your Absence” tries to come to terms with a sudden void, and the anguish of breakup is preferred over continuing a fractured relationship on the punchy “Rather Live with the Heartache.” Ted paints a colorful picture of a worldly woman on the gentle “A Flower in Madrid,” touts the durability of a “Little Rose,” and lets instruments and arrangement paint a sassy personality on the punchy instrumental “Violet Wilds.” Lost hope permeates the vibe on the darker-toned “Where Dreams Go to Die,” hard living renders its impact on the edgy “What Your Love Looks Like,” and trying to crack the codes to Ted’s soul will take some effort on the hard-edged “Bigger Bombs.” The songs are all distinct and compelling, with Ted’s melodies and wordplays providing constant highlights. Guest keyboardist Mark Daubert, fiddle player Daniel Collins and bassist/flute player Bob Hart all effectively color and tone these songs, and backing singer Molly Countermine adds just the right vocal accents to provide emphasis. By now, it’s pretty clear that McCloskey knows what he is doing behind the console, and his production brings his musical innovations and nuances to full fruition. Last Flower Standing offers another captivating snapshot of the musical mind and artistry of its creator, and adds another colorful chapter to Ted McCloskey’s stunning overall body of work. (The CD can be obtained through the website www.tedmccloskey.com.) JIMMY ADLER – GREASE ALLEY (Sprucewood Records) Pittsburgh’s Jimmy Adler jumps, jives, wails, swings and frolics through the 13 tracks of his latest studio album, Grease Alley. Slinging guitar and singing, Jimmy takes a joyride through a myriad of blues-based styles, spanning New Orleans and swamp blues to jump blues, swing, Texas blues, R&B and more. He tapped the talents of some renowned blues musicians to help bring these original song creations to life; including Norwegian-born guitarist Kid Anderson (of Charlie & the Nightcats), who also recorded, mastered and produced the album at his Greaseland Studios facility in San Jose, California. Also assisting Jimmy are keyboardist Jim Pugh (of the Rob-
ert Cray Band), Charlie Musselwhite’s drummer June Core, and

– now living in the San Jose area – his former saxophone player, Eric Spaulding. Jimmy sets the tone and honors two influences on the disc opener “Say It Like Magic Sam,” referencing T-Bone Walker and Chicago-based bluesman Magic Sam. Naw’lins is the prominent flavor of the title track “Grease Alley,” complete with Jimmy’s “Saints Go Marching In”-themed mid-song guitar solo. A more swamp-geared southern blues groove drives “Ease Me Down Slow” with its catchy call-and-response choruses, while Texas blues propels the morning after ode “Drank Too Much.” A clear highlight is “No Pain,” which showcases guest singer Chris Cain with his B.B. King-like growl; Cain’s guitar skills shine later on the disc during “What Will You Do.” The album’s most boisterous moments happen on uptempo romps such as the rockabilly-geared “I Can’t Wait,” “Cornbread and Lima Beans,” “Cordelia” and the Texas swing-driven disc-closer “Hoodoo Highway.” Providing the most sullen moment is the darker slow blues of “Love Was Worth These Blues.”And Jimmy taps a Memphis soul flavor on “Nine Behind” and “What I’ve Done.” Jimmy’s enthusiastic vocals and stellar guitar solo work both provide constant highlights through the album, as well as establish a continuous thread to tie this diverse set together. The performances consistently shine, and every song here is strong with no weak links. Kid Anderson’s production and guidance enables Grease Alley to sound vibrant and full, while staying firmly rooted in the traditional blues atmosphere. The result is a fun, uplifting blues album – Grease Alleygrooves and swaggers, and provides a lively listening experience well worth checking out. (The CD can be obtained through Jimmy’s website, www. jimmyadler.com.) JONATHAN MONUMENT – WONDERKID (no label) Reading-based rock group Jonathan Monument expands the scope of their alternative-rooted rock sound on their third CD, Wonderkid. The group – founding members, singers and guitarists David Fick and Steven Balthaser, bassist/singer Matt Thren and drummer Josh Noel – mixes a variety of flavors into their hard-edged, guitar-driven sound. 1990s-era alternative serves as the foundation from which the group explores adventurous song structures and elements of punk, roots-rock, 1960s/70s pop and more. Jangly rockabilly is the driving force behind the fast-moving disc-opener “Mine,” while the group salutes Japanese surf-rock guitarist Takeshi Terauchi on the stormy surf instrumental “Takeshi.” The group mixes catchy melodies with muscle on punchy rockers like the title track “Wonderkid,” “Ne’er-Do-Wells” and an update of an earlier song, “What Lives in the Lake?” Jonathan Monument plays with intriguing chord structures and unexpected melodic twists and turns on “We Are the Children of Light” and “From the Sky,” and they tap 1960s-styled vocal arrangements on “Suzie’s Got a Shotgun.” The album ends with the expansive “Destroyer,” which begins with a dreamy Beatles-like passage that builds into a hard-rocking instrumental homestretch. The group’s performances are crisp and energetic, and former member and guest Jon Smith’s key accents and backing vocals flesh out the group’s sound in various places through the disc. Produced by the band, Frank Phobia and Mike Radka, Wonderkid sounds brisk and balanced, with the group’s voices, melodies and abrasive guitar edges all prominent. The result is another fresh-sounding effort; Wonderkid offers innovative rock that is edgy yet infectious, and shows Jonathan Monument’s further progression and adventurism. (The CD can be obtained through the group’s Bandcamp web page, jonathanmonument.bandcamp.com.)
