Goals/Objectives ▪ Learn industry performance trends after implementation of ICD-10 • How these trends can identify favorable and unfavorable payment trend groups
▪ Understand the importance of capturing your CC/MCCs now and in the future ▪ Learn how this data can drive focused audits and education and the potential benefits to improve your coding, documentation and financial position

NATIONAL CC/MCC STUDY National and Regional CC/MCC & CMI Trends
4
Goals of the Study ▪ Determine how the industry is performing overall since the implementation of ICD-10 and subsequently ▪ How individual health systems are trending and comparing to the national benchmarks ▪ Find out if there is continued opportunity in coding, documentation, and financial improvement ▪ Create benchmarks ▪ Provide reports
5
Methodology 1. Study is based on Medicare claims data from October 1, 2015 through September 30, 2017 2. Analyzed data from 4,153 U.S. Hospitals 3. 195 DRG groups – both doublets and triplets (example: W/0 CC, W/CC, W/MCC)
4. Use standard CC/MCC capture rate calculations for all DRG doublets and triplets. 5. Assumed the data from CMS was correct
METHODOLOGY
6
Overview ▪ Changes in healthcare, expected case-mix indices to increase year over year ▪ ICD-10 required greater specificity beginning Oct 1, 2015 ▪ Healthcare industry feared it would see decreases in case-mix indices and payments ▪ Fears did not play out.

Focused vs Random Audits… Is One Better Than the Other?
Audits: Focused or Random? ▪ Both are beneficial ▪ Random audits • Used for coder benchmarks - Not looking for specific problem areas
- Overall coding accuracy
▪ Focused audits • Not used for coder benchmarks - Looking for specific opportunities or high audit risk areas >
Based on data, denials, change in financials, etc.

16
Benefits and Challenges of Random Audits ▪ Coding benchmarks • Get overall accuracy rates by coder • Track coder accuracy rates quarterly/semi-annually/annually
▪ Coding team • Can show strengths • Can show weaknesses • Can result in education focus for team
▪ Accuracy rates • Often are high - May not be a true indicator of accuracy >
False security?

17
Benefits and Challenges of Focused Audits ▪ Reveals suspected problem areas • Denials • Changes in financials • CC/MCC capture rates
▪ Results in focused education • For coders, physicians and CDI
▪ Accuracy rates often low when problems confirmed ▪ Can I really review ALL my claims? • Difficult to review ALL claims in a given period - Resource intensive Software. Consulting. Education. Results.
