WELCOME

elcome to the April-May issue of Business Traveller India; which is also our sixth anniversary special. And to say the least, what a roller-coaster ride it’s been! Six years of business travel that blends with leisure sojourns. Six years of business meetings that turned colleagues into friends. Six years of making the sky our “office with a view” and the hotel desk into a scenic “work from home” setup. PS - I am not complaining one bit. And then came along the pandemic that indefinitely changed our lives and work for good. Working from home and now crawling our way back to normalcy, I have learned that life, travel, health and work — should never be taken for granted. The transience of life is the only constant we hold on to. And hence, this issue, we celebrate our love for travel; including some of the destinations we miss, preferred airlines, hotels, watches and cars. We celebrate the quest for unconventional experiences at our usual destinations, including London, Tokyo, Dubai, Hong Kong, Frankfurt and more. We celebrate the love for food (at Indian hotels) that’s been reason enough to hail us back to make a reservation. We celebrate premium classes of airlines that now seem more luxurious than ever. We celebrate a few of our favourite things - handpicked time wear and automobiles. Our sixth anniversary issue embodies our labour of love and our passion to return to our usual ways of business travel. The above along with reviews, a special trip to a brand new Maldives hotel, latest news from the world of aviation, hospitality and more makes up this issue. So, we invite you to ride on this wave of perseverance as we hope for a brighter future where I am sure, a beautiful version of this new normalcy awaits. Here’s wishing you an ever inspiring travel state of mind.

SHOE CARE SNOBS Sartorial style finds its roots at theshoesnob.com From smooth leathers to suedes to exotic leathers; from trainers to leather bags and even sofas, we have care, nurture and maintenance covered. We believe in true craftsmanship, and as such have expanded our range over the lockdown period to include some key investment pieces. This includes a small collection of umbrellas by a small British company called Fox Umbrellas - they have kept many Prime Ministers and royal figures from past to present dry in some uncompromising weather. As for socks, we have enlisted two giants in Pantherella & Royal Warrant Holders Corgi to shroud customers’ feet in luxurious cashmere, wool or cotton offerings. 7

tyle” and “fashion” are as disparate as “love” and “infatuation”: the first being permanent, the second fleeting. Truly stylish people see well-crafted footwear a sartorial foundation – and, as such, an investment. In accordance with the old adage “ You can tell a lot about a person by their shoes”, sartorial excellence is achieved, quite literally, from the ground up. Shoes worth having are worth looking after. Shoes speak - what do yours say about you? These are the core principles upon which the theshoesnob.com - a purveyor of premium shoe care products - is founded. We have been quietly working away throughout the pandemic and have refreshed

our look and products to offer what we believe to be the best of the best. From the finest beeswax and shoe polish to vibrantly coloured waxed cotton laces, our range is continually evolving. We only deal in the necessary and the noteworthy fluff and snake oil have no place in our hallowed realm. From our own branded products to the celebrated French Shoe Care maker Saphir Medaille d’Or to the shoe world’s best kept secret “Boot Black” by Columbus (a Japanese manufacturing company that has been quietly ploughing its trade for only a little over 100 years) we have all your shoe care regimes covered.

ETIHAD AIRWAYS PARTNERS WITH LOCALLY BASED ARTISTS TO UPCYCLE AIRCRAFT PARTS
ETIHAD AIRWAYS HAS partnered with local designers to upcycle obsolete aircraft cabin interiors into pieces of art, as an environmentally friendly alternative of dealing with waste. Carpet and fabric rolls, emergency equipment, sidewalls and windows, and Economy and Business class seats are just some of the old aircraft parts designers Azza Al Qubaisi and Christine Wilson used to design art installations for the airline. These art installations are not only some of the most magnificent upcycled art pieces but also a new way to make the world a more sustainable and environment friendly place to be in. Etihad is displaying the art pieces at Etihad Headquarters and hopes to commission similar work in the future. etihad.com

AIR MILES
Thomas Pongsak Catley is the chef-partner at TORI in Mumbai, a new restaurant that encapsulates an amalgamation of Latin and Asian cuisine. His food philosophy is to make the most of the local produce available and use cooking techniques to combine unusual elements. He speaks to Business Traveller India about food and travel.
What is your favourite dish to cook and why?
It has to be an English Sunday Roast. It consists of roasting a piece of meat for example a whole chicken, leg of lamb, topside of beef (eaten after church service on Sunday afternoon). The meat is served alongside roast potatoes, Yorkshire puddings, greens, roasted root vegetables, cauliflower cheese and a gravy made from the juices of the meat. It was the only meal that we would have at my grandmother’s house when my father’s side of the family would be there.
How would you describe your style of cooking?
I have worked with many amazing chefs and there are a lot of techniques that I have learnt over the years, which I use in creating my dishes. It’s always about
cooking food that has been influenced by my childhood, travels and the cuisines that I have worked with. So, my food can be unpredictable. By using local seasonal produce on my menus, I get to support the local economy, cook with ingredients that are at their prime, grown locally so its carbon footprint is low or none at all and is available on my doorstep.
anything that doesn’t contain spices and have too much flavour.
What are your food preferences during travel?
Which is your favourite city in the world for food and why?
I just want to eat what is local and since I am Thai, there has to be some rice with my meal though! Of course, if I am going to be there for a while, I might miss certain comfort foods. For example, having spent 15 weeks in India, by the end all I wanted was mash potatoes with gravy, cheese on toasted sourdough and
Three trends that are influencing India’s culinary scene at present?
Dark kitchens and soaring delivery orders, people being more health conscious during and after lockdown; local and sustainable ingredients and championing regional cuisine are shaping the culinary scene.
This is a difficult one. If we are talking about street-food/flavours/spicy/ Asian/ Thai, it has to be Bangkok or Singapore (both have amazing China towns). But if we are talking about diversity, new food trends, pop-ups, China-town, celebrity chefs, world cuisines, then it has to be London.

ravelling internationally in a postpandemic world surely is a different experience. The situation remains highly dynamic as countries have different restrictions, various quarantine measures are in place and guidelines are constantly updated by governments and regulatory health bodies as the scenario changes. You may also have a host of other queries, from planning your journey and flexibility in bookings to inflight sanitisation and health measures taken by the airline. To make this process easier, Etihad Airways offers a host of initiatives that help you plan your next trip. The airline has prioritised passengers’ wellness and thoughtfully introduced a host of different measures which will not only help them plan their travels seamlessly but also ensure that they can fly with peace of mind. 100 PER CENT OF ETIHAD’S CREW ONBOARD HAVE BEEN VACCINATED Etihad became the first airline in the world with all its operating pilots and cabin crew vaccinated to help curb the spread of Covid-19 and give passengers who travel with the airline added assurance of safety. COVID-19 INSURANCE WITHIN THE COST OF THE FLIGHT TICKET If any passenger is diagnosed with Covid-19 during their trip, they won’t have to worry about medical expenses or quarantine costs when they fly with Etihad. The airline has introduced a global Covid-19 wellness insurance as part of its health and hygiene programme, Etihad Wellness and this is currently included with every Etihad ticket. The insurance is automatically effective following the first flight outside of the guest’s home country and is valid for 31 days, or upon return to their home country if earlier. WELLNESS AMBASSADOR ON EVERY FLIGHT Etihad has introduced specially trained Wellness Ambassadors, a first in the industry, who will provide essential travel health information and care so guests can fly with greater peace of mind. They are available 24/7 pre-departure, at Abu Dhabi International Airport and on board every flight to offer reassurance by sharing advice on travel wellbeing and details of the health and sanitisation measures being implemented throughout the guest’s journey. TECH AND DIGITAL-FIRST SOLUTIONS Due to the pandemic, there has been an accelerated growth in digitalising experiences and ensuring contactless travel for guests, with their safety and wellness in mind. Technology will continue to be a driving force, creating new avenues in the postpandemic world. Etihad leads the industry in creating, testing and implementing technologies that make travel safer, more sustainable, more enjoyable and with passenger wellness as the priority. The airline has also been working with a variety of different companies, some within the industry, some outside of it, to develop technology required for a global health certification system. Most recently, it has partnered with the International Air Transport Association to launch the IATA Travel Pass for its guests. This offering, currently under trial, will help passengers easily and securely manage their travel in line with government requirements for Covid-19 tests or vaccines. business traveller india

FOUR SEASONS HOTEL BENGALURU One of Bengaluru’s finest addresses, Four Seasons Hotel Bengaluru boasts an impressive culinary scene, showcased across its popular venues including Far & East, CUR8 and Copitas. A must-have at their Asian brasserie, Far & East is Singapore style fried rice noodles which is a medley of rice noodles, chilli powder, curry powder and vegetables. Nonvegetarians get the option to add prawns, egg or chicken. The dish highlights Chef Leong’s Singaporean heritage and is inspired by the Hawker’s Centre noodle that is popular amidst local Singaporeans and visitors. Calling out to all bread lovers to try out the tiger bread at CUR8. This multigrain striated bread is served complimentary at the table with a chunky tomato salsa; and is crusty with a pillowy soft texture inside. The name is attributed to the striations that the bread has when fully baked; and is inspired by Karnataka’s tiger reserves. Head to Copitas, and enjoy the Ibiza cocktail which has notes of betel leaf, homemade saffron, honey water and lemon blend in with tequila. fourseasons.com

HYATT REGENCY DELHI With a legacy of more than 38 years, Hyatt Regency Delhi’s F&B is quite appealing. The hotel is packed with speciality restaurants, all-day dining, a colonial bar and a bakery. One of its restaurants we recommend you bookmark is La Piazza, the Italian restaurant. With its open wood-fired oven concept, the outlet serves some of the most unique pizzas and pastas in the city. One must try the signature la piazza pizza prepared with semolina flour, pizza sauce, roast garlic, fresh goat cheese, mozzarella cheese added with a pinch of oregano dry, extra virgin olive oil, sun-dried tomato and basil pesto. Signature tiramisu is a winner here, with fresh mascarpone, egg yolks, sugar, amaretto, ladyfinger biscuit (Savoiardi), strong coffee without sugar and cacao powder. We also recommend you visit TK’S Oriental Grill, a teppanyaki grill, and order special minced chicken salad here. Another signature dish is ‘Bombay masala’ eggs Benedict, a culinary twist to the classic with toasted pav bread, poached eggs, and the unique ‘gunpowder’ hollandaise. The hotel’s Romano’s restaurant is all about rustic, authentic, homestyle Italian preparations. Guests can enjoy the signature Branzino Cartoccio – an oven-baked Chilean sea bass, caponata, and home-grown herbs. Not to forget, since the inception of Romano’s, the risotto al funghi has been a hit with patrons. JAPANESE TIPPLING A classic Japanese-style bar experience means hitting an izakaya after your meetings
30
T
okyo’s cultural potpourri is intriguing to say the least. Anyone who’s visited Japan knows that there are certain aspects of its society and tradition that are signature to the Land of the Rising Sun. From the no tipping rule to addressing another individual with the suffix of the respect giving “san”; there are ways to conduct yourself in Japan. A way of life that’s quintessentially Japanese — and one that’s always caught our fancy — is the concept of izakayas. This is an experience that you must absolutely indulge in on your visit to Tokyo, as being the capital city, it’s the hub of the izakaya culture in all of Japan. So what is an izakaya, to begin with? It’s essentially an after-work Japanese bar where people get together for drinks, snacks and banter. What’s special about the concept is that it dates back to the Edo period (1603-1868) when a sake merchant began serving the drink in tasting glasses in a corner of his humble shop. It was in the 1970s that izakayas grew phenomenally in popularity among the working community. However today, there is an izakaya for everyone; from office-goers, students, expats to tourists. The society in Japan is A P R I L-M AY 2 0 2 1
considered to be relatively reserved, and an izakaya is a place where they get together for nomikai (a gathering to drink), often at the bar counter itself, and let go for a while alongside good food, drinks and conversation. So if this concept interests you and an experience of some true Japanese culture is on your bucket-list on your trip to Japan, here are some options you can consider. GONPACHI NISHI-AZABU A ten-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Roppongi Station, this rather large establishment is a great choice for first-time izakaya visitors. Popular among international travellers, Gonpachi Nishi-Azabu is famed for being one of the locations for the filming of Quentin Tarantino’s movie Kill Bill. It is also open for banquets and dinner, and its old-school ambience brings out Tokyo’s bygone era. From its homemade soba noodles, crispy tempura items, rich collection of sake as per the map of Japan and other Japanese drinks such as shochu (a Japanese distilled beverage) cocktails, Gonpachi NishiAzabu offers a signature Tokyo izakaya experience. business traveller india

WARAYAKIYA ROPPONGI A three-minute walk from Tokyo Metro Roppongi Station, Warayakiya Roppongi is known for using a straw-burning flame frill to prepare dishes from the Kōchi Prefecture (Shikoku island) — such as katsuo tataki (seared bonito). Warayaki means the straw-roasted cooking method that finds its origins in the fishing villages on coast of the Kōchi Prefecture. Some of the other highlights on the menu include seared mackerel, straw-roasted chicken, meats and vegetables. Complementing the unique food is its wide variety of sake and Japanese beer. An interesting selection of highballs ( Japanese whisky soda) and cocktails is also on the menu. business traveller india
KAIKAYA BY THE SEA If seafood impresses your palate, Kaikaya by the Sea should definitely be on your list. Located in the buzzing Shibuya district of Tokyo, the seafood at this izakaya is shipped directly from Sagami Bay that lies south of Kanagawa Prefecture in central Japan. On the seafood menu are sashimi platters, grilled fish, fresh fish carpaccio, shrimp and pork dumplings, steaks and more delicious dishes. The sake and shochu list is elaborate and appealing, and the establishment also has a decent collection of wine. The range of desserts at Kaikaya by the Sea includes the likes of kaikaya pudding with earl grey and plum sorbet with wine jelly. jnto.go.jp A P R I L-M AY 2 0 2 1

EMIRATI NEWNESS A meeting point for global and local cultures, Dubai has something new for all interests

D
ubai opened up for leisure tourism in July 2020, and was soon followed by the happenings of local and international business events in September and October respectively, with a steady and growing stream of ongoing meetings, conferences, and trade shows since then. A key part of Dubai tourism strategy in 2021 is (wherever possible) to resume face-to-face meetings and interactions with business personnel around the world. Several safety practices have been put in place to make this possible. The city is using technology to enable heightened safety, and one mechanism that has already been deployed in venues includes artificial intelligence monitoring tools that enable organisers to identify where there isn’t sufficient social distancing or where crowds may be unacceptably large. Moreover, AI in taxis can confirm if passengers are wearing face masks or not. Tourism wise, Dubai has always had a strong appetite for planners to experience the emirate as a destination since it offers something for all interests – culture vultures, adventurous seekers, wellbeing fans and foodies.

Visitors can jump aboard and visit historical attractions such as Jumeirah Mosque Garden and the Al Fahidi district, savour local cuisine and also immerse themselves in stories about Dubai's history from an Emirati guide. Additionally, one can also partake in a cultural meal at the Sheikh Mohammed Centre for cultural understanding and learn more about local customs.

RETAIL HAVENS Hong Kong and Macau offer a wide variety for those who enjoy a little bit of shopping indulgence 38
H
aving visited Hong Kong many times for business and leisure, I’ve always ensured to keep a few hours (or days, if time permits) for some retail debauchery. Even though I am not a “shopaholic” per se, Hong Kong and its neighbouring Special Administrative Region of Macau have always enamoured me for their retail excellence. It’s no surprise that HK’s wide array of shopping categories impresses all types of customers; with its superior technology markets, high-street fashion, luxury labels, premium horology brands, local boutiques and flea bazaars. On the other hand, Macau’s extravagant shopping venues are meant for high end luxury seekers, although it does have its share of street-style shopping too. If an indulgence in retail is on your mind next time you visit Hong Kong and Macau, venture into the below areas. THE SHOPPER’S PARADISE | HONG KONG The first stop for any traveller to Hong Kong is usually the Central District, and this is where you can begin your retail run as well. As the name suggests, Central is Hong Kong’s centre point of business, economy and shopping. It is lined with luxury labels and colossal shopping malls that house a spectrum of brands from all categories. Situated on Queen’s Road in Central is Landmark, one A P R I L-M AY 2 0 2 1
of HK’s most premium shopping venues. Some of the labels you can find in this exclusive shopping mall include Louis Vuitton, Polo Ralph Lauren, Chanel and Gucci. It is also a hub for watch enthusiasts as it features horology boutiques of A. Lange & Söhne, Cartier, Chopard and Bulgari, to name a few. For F&B seekers, Landmark houses around 70 dining outlets under its roof — including the newly opened Michelin-starred restaurant Man Wah, The Aubrey for local cuisine and Alfred’s for tailor-made cuisines. Situated in the skyscraper of the International Finance Centre is International Finance Centre Mall, the next destination you should head to for shopping while in Central. One of the foremost reasons being that it houses Hong Kong’s flagship Apple Store, along with other brands such as Bobbi Brown, Celine, Coach, Dior, IWC, Mont Blanc, Panerai and Valentino. The next two stops on your shopping exploration of Hong Kong must be the areas of Admiralty and Causeway Bay. From high end malls, street style shops, adorable department stores to mediumpriced boutiques, these areas have the answer to all your shopping woes in the city. Head to SOGO Department Store in Causeway Bay, a Japanese-style department store that appeals to locals and tourists. Here you can purchase a range of products from watches, cosmetics and skincare, fashion accessories and home decor items. discoverhongkong.com business traveller india

THE RETAIL LANDMARK | MACAU The Special Administrative Region of Macau has been attracting all kinds of travellers — from budget to luxury seekers — for decades now. Its plethora of glamorous casinos is an obvious reason, however, its prominence in the retail segment is significantly hailing serious shoppers as well. If luxe brands are on your mind, visit Grand Canal Shoppes at The Venetian Macao. Set in the fanciful Venetian-inspired canals, the destination is lined with around 330 shops featuring highend stores (Fendi, Dior and Dolce & Gabbana) and medium-priced brands (Zara, Pull & Bead and Tory Burch). If this isn’t strangely
enough for your luxury shopping requirements, head to the Shoppes at Four Seasons that hosts 150 stores of brands including Versace, Kenzo, Valentino and Tod’s. The former Portuguese colony of Macau prides itself on its Portugal-inspired areas that appeal to the travellers seeking a bit of culture on their trips. Senado Square, the heart of old, Portuguese Macau, is known for its variety of shops and food stalls that line its streets. If you happen to be in Macau on a Sunday, don’t forget to visit Taipei Flea Market for some good deals on antiques, accessories, souvenirs and food items. macaotourism.gov.mo

he sites, sounds (Mind the Gap), restaurants and parks of London have always appealed to us. Exploring the British capital post work and meetings means visiting pubs, diners in nooks, exploring the city’s history and architecture. If you, like us, wish to explore different facets of London and venture into the lesser known yet fascinating parts of the city, read on. DENNIS SEVERS’ HOUSE Situated at 18 Folgate Street in Spitafields, Dennis Severs’ House is considered a time capsule. Created by its erstwhile owner Dennis Severs, the house is a “still life drama” that aims to encapsulate what life would have been like for a family of Huguenot (French Protestants that faced severe persecution) silk weavers. The sites, sounds and even smells take you on a historic trip through an alternative 18th century world. Dennis Severs, an artist, has created the house as if it were a painting. ven though most of international travel is still restricted; Singapore is setting new standards for international business events under its ‘Connect@Singapore' initiative. This initiative aims to support the revival of Singapore’s air hub status and hospitality sector, and facilitate essential business exchanges in the pandemic environment. Once approved by authorities, business and high economic value travellers from all countries will be able to enter Singapore for shortterm stays of up to 14 days to conduct in-person meetings via the business travel bubble. Travellers can bypass a 14-day quarantine by staying at this facility, which is designed to offer travellers with all necessities required for a ‘test-stay-work-meet’ travel. Travellers opting for this cannot leave this facility and are required to undergo multiple PCR testing throughout the stay. This first-of-its-kind Connect@Changi hotel features 150 guestrooms, an indoor courtyard, gym pods, and 40 well-equipped meeting rooms with air-tight glass panels and an advanced ventilation system. By May, Connect@Changi expands to about 660 guestrooms and 170 meeting rooms, which can each seat four to 22 attendees and have floor-to-ceiling glass partitions. Guests during their stay can download Connect@Changi free
mobile application. This allows them to easily book meeting rooms, reserve gym pods, and order meals. Room tariffs start at S$384 (`20,874) for a 24-hour stay, which includes three meals, round-trip airport transfers, and mandatory Covid-19 tests. connectatchangi.sg Singapore is also gearing up for The World Economic Forum Special Annual Meeting that is scheduled from August 17-20, 2021. GASTRONOMICAL INDULGENCE Exploring Frankfurt’s expansive F&B offerings
F 58
TOP AND DOWN: Booth at the Appel wine Festival and Green Sauce
rankfurt’s vibrant food scene has a lot to offer and boasts several 'must-haves' for food enthusiasts from across the globe. One amongst these is Frankfurter, a long, thin flavourful sausage that is lightly smoked and is made from pork. Traditionally, they are served with bread, yellow mustard, horseradish, and potato salad. Next on the list of must-try local dishes in the German city is Green sauce, a blend of seven herbs borage, chervil, cress, parsley, salad burnet, sorrel, and chives. It is served cold over hard-boiled eggs and boiled potatoes. The delicacy is so popular in the region that an elaborate culinary celebration is hosted to honour it. Called the Green Sauce Festival, this seven-daylong event invites visitors to taste different green sauce creations and pick a winner from the many cooking teams sent forth by Frankfurt’s hotels and restaurants. For the cheese lovers, there is Handkas mit Musik that translates to ‘hand cheese with music’. Locals usually only use a knife to eat this dish by pushing some cheese with marinade on a buttered piece of bread (no fork is required). Satiate your sweet cravings with Frankfurter Kranz (buttercream cake Frankfurt-style). It resembles a crown, with golden brittle placed around the outside and jewel-like cherries as decoration. The discussion about Frankfurt’s F&B is incomplete without the mention of its most popular beverage — apple wine. Head to one of the rustic apple wine pubs in the city, where it is served in an earthenware jug, commonly referred to as the 'bembel', and drunk from a special ribbed glass, known as the gerippte. FOOD HUBS TO EXPLORE Enjoy a food-filled time at Freßgass that houses several cafés, bistros, bars, and restaurants serving breakfast, lunch, afternoon snacks, and happy-hour drinks. A variety of local, regional and international specialities can be enjoyed here. Try out the traditional and authentic recipes at Adolf Wagner where you also get to experience the flavour of the cider culture. Coffee enthusiasts must check out Café Wacker that serves a wide range of coffee specialties from its own roasters. Frankfurt is also home to several Michelin Starred restaurants including Restaurant Gustav, Restaurant Lafleur, Carmelo Greco, Seven Swans, Erno's Bistro, Français; the list goes on. frankfurt-tourismus.de

ndless ocean views, white-sand beaches, spectacular marine ecosystems — the beauty that the Maldives is, never ceases to amaze me; so much so that I decided to explore it amidst a pandemic. Setting foot into the world of international travel once again, I flew to the turquoise paradise in February this year, for a zen holiday at OZEN RESERVE BOLIFUSHI, the latest resort by THE OZEN COLLECTION. Situated in a glittering lagoon in South Malé Atoll, this uber-luxe private island resort opened its doors to guests in December 2020.
However, a more elaborate Maldivian welcome awaited me at the Bolifushi island. The blowing of a conch shell, the rhythm of the bodu beru (a Maldivian drum) drumming and sangu shell whistling against the blue backdrop complemented by the serving of kurumba (fresh coconut) drink seemed like the ideal start to my island sojourn. And that wasn’t all! I was then pampered with a foot massage, which, at the risk of sounding dramatic, was soul-stirring.
WARM WELCOMES
The resort is a 20-minute catamaran ride from Velana International Airport, where, upon arrival, I was greeted by the resort’s team and escorted to the private and air-conditioned THE OZEN COLLECTION LOUNGE. While I waited for my ride to arrive, I refreshed myself with a face towel and some water. As a part of the traditional welcome, I was offered a palm leaf garland which is now the latest addition to my little keepsake box that holds memories from my travel tales. business traveller india

e were hoping that the end of 2020 would spell the end of the Covid crisis. That has not yet happened. How can we thus envisage this year, without looking for something in this public health crisis other than merely the cause of our misfortunes? The Covid crisis is often presented as a trigger for new phenomena, a catalyst for new trends. I certainly see it as a trend accelerator, from the digitalisation of commerce to a general awareness of the risks linked to the economic and industrial development of our society: global warming, pollution and animal extinction. I also see it as a demonstration by absurdity – or more specifically by absence – of the persistence of certain fundamental elements characterising the watch industry and the luxury world in general. Our industry and indeed our society lives and breathes through social interaction, exchanges, sensual and physical contact. In 2020, we have learned to do without watch fairs, exhibitions, commercial operations and pop-up stores. We have moved towards intensive use of new video platforms such as Zoom or Teams. Biometrics and artificial intelligence have been making constant rounds in the aviation industry for a while now, however, the introduction to the ‘IATA Travel Pass’ has been by far the most promising addition. I believe that the IATA Travel Pass is a global and standardised solution to validate and authenticate all country regulations regarding Covid-19 passenger travel requirements. It provides safe, secure and accurate information on Covid health status, and can be considered the future of travel, as social distancing norms, contactless travel and passenger health checks remain pivotal. With safety, hygiene and reliability being paramount, airlines would be especially invested in connecting people with destinations that have tighter border controls and strict vaccine protocols while continuing to provide seamless connectivity. ith the gravity of coronavirus pandemic worsening, your business or leisure travel plans could go awry for no mistake of yours. Flight cancellations, hotels being forced to shut due to abrupt lockdown or worsening health of a family member can force you to rethink the sojourn. During such uncertain times, a sufficient travel insurance coverage becomes pertinent. With travel insurance in your armoury, you can tackle the hesitation and avoid financial bruises, making the tour pleasurable. The past year has given us a fair idea of what can be beyond our control while moving from one part of the world to another. Deeper insights on your travel insurance can soothe your nerves. CANCELLATIONS Advance moves in the lure of best flights and hotel deals have become second nature for most travellers. With government norms guiding the direction for airlines and hospitality partners, the fear of cancellation looms. If you are fretting over the financial loss due to cancellation involved in hotel bookings or airline fares, then the trip cancellation feature of travel insurance can come to your rescue. Though there is no blanket acceptance of all trip cancellation excuses, customisable travel insurance policies are available that reimburse the non-refundable amount on flight tickets or hotel bookings if you are forced to cancel your trip. The nature of the event covered is specific to your travel cover – few might A P R I L-M AY 2 0 2 1
accept self or family medical emergency, while others would accept only changes at the airline end or local law changes.
Ensure Covid-19 is not an exclusion under the plan you purchase
EXTENSION Are you battling nightmares of not being permitted to decamp from the picturesque travel locale owing to lockdown, throwing your travel budget askew? Remember, you can offset the additional spends with travel insurance by your side. A policy extension can be opted for by paying additional premium, if a situation beyond your control develops. This feature comes in handy when we have been witnessing several natural calamities. Insurers have occasionally even waived off the premium differential, while assisting with policy modifications when airlines couldn’t take off due to low visibility or there were cracks in the runway. Though you can cover every trip you undertake, if you frequently travel due to work, then a multi-trip travel insurance cover would be appropriate. SICKNESS The threat of illness and the need for hospitalisation in faraway land, especially for elder family members had been forcing many to avoid vacations. However, travel insurance can be your safeguard when the local health insurance coverage is restricted. Another
positive is that travel covers are available for the elderly too, though some restrictions are in place for those above 70 years. But ensure Covid-19 is not an exclusion under the plan you purchase, as that could jeopardise your finances if the hospitalisation is sought due to the most common issue afflicting the world currently.
CONTEMPLATE When you have made up your mind to opt for a travel insurance policy, select plans without sub limits or restrictions on the compensation, offered by a handful of insurers only. Though the cost would escalate vis-à-vis plan with limits, getting the entire compensation amount during a claim lists high in the order of priority. With the insurance industry bracing for standard travel insurance covers in less than a month, the global access and hassle-free claims should be your key parameter. With international alarm centres aiding Tata AIG Travel Guard policy holders, roundthe-clock medical evacuation, translation assistance, legal aid or even emergency cash are merely a tap away. Considering the benefits to offer travel insurance is capable of being called your invisible companion when you are in an unknown territory. BTI business traveller india

he coronavirus pandemic is one of the most challenging economic crises that the business world has faced. Amongst the various businesses affected by it, the interdependent industries of aviation, hospitality, and tourism bore the maximum brunt. According to a report by HVS India and ANAROCK, the total revenue for India’s hospitality sector in 2020 is estimated at ₹89,813 crore, a whopping 56 per cent less than the total estimated revenue of ₹1,58,113 crore in 2019. However, the Indian hospitality industry, spearheaded by the hotel market, is on the road to recovering and becoming one of the key drivers of India’s economic growth. Indian hotels are known globally for offering excellent services. So, while these hotels have been known to use technology in the back end to support customer personalisation for a long time, Covid-19 has pushed the use of technology in the traveller experience, replacing and minimising human contact. According to a report by Noesis Capital Advisors and Ngage Hospitality titled “Indian Hotels Performance H1 2020-2021” the country’s hotels are likely to reach occupancy levels similar to that of 2019 by the end of the fourth quarter of fiscal 2021, and technology transformation will play a big role. Since I got a middle seat, the safety kit included a wraparound gown in addition to the face mask, a face shield and sanitiser. I proceeded to board the aircraft while social distancing and was satisfied to see people finally realising the need and importance of maintaining adequate space between each other.
T H E F L I G H T The flight was comfortable, and I managed to get a good rest, thereby making up for all the sleep that I lost the previous night, owing to my lastminute packing habit. It was a two-hour 45-minutes journey, most of which I spent sleeping. I woke up in between to have a paneer (cottage cheese) sandwich which satiated my hunger pang followed by a refreshing mango juice. I was particularly impressed by the functioning of the cabin crew who were cordial, but at the same time made sure that passengers followed all the necessary protocols such as wearing face masks and shields.

W H A T ’ S I T L I K E ? A stay at the hotel is a date with heritage of old-world ‘Bombay’. Colloquially called the “Grand Dame of Mumbai”, the Taj is steeped in centuries worth of legacy with its art and architecture including Belgian chandeliers, Goan Christian artefacts and its magnificent 240-feet high central dome. Divided into the Tower and Palace Wings, it has a total of 560 rooms and suites. The renovated Palace Wing opened to guests in August 2010, with refreshed rooms and restored antiquated corridors. Those interested in the hotel’s history should walk down the Hall of Fame on level one that exhibits portraits of its eminent guests and significant landmarks. There is also an art gallery and several nooks where you’ll stumble upon art dating back to the colonial era. W H E R E I S I T ? By the Gateway of India in Colaba, overlooking the Arabian Sea. I loved the little touches that upped the luxury quotient of my stay - Forest Essentials pillow mist, rose petals delicately decorated across my room and a serve of macarons post turndown. Each suite of the hotel is different from one another and prides itself on interesting backstories; for example the Bell suite in the Palace Wing sits inside the dome and houses the original “Colaba Bell” that was used for maritime protocols in the 1900s.

I enjoyed a sumptuous Chinese meal at the Golden Dragon where the warm staff spoilt me with an array of dim sum, starters, mains and dessert. The dishes that stood out include — truffle edamame dim sum, stuffed shiitake with five-spiced honey, truffle-scented mushroom rice, drycooked haricot beans and chocolate toffee dessert. For breakfast and lunch, I dined at Sea Lounge, where its powder-blue walls and soft piano music create a tranquil setting. Breakfast was avocado on toast,

The masseur mentioned that tests for the spa staff are conducted on a bi-weekly basis and stringent sanitisation procedures are followed — ensuring I entered my treatment room with peace of mind. I also embarked on a morning sailing experience curated by the hotel where I caught a sparkling sunrise whilst cruising on the Arabian Sea. A light breakfast was provided onboard.

"The experience was surreal,” he says. “The whole valley was covered in a blanket of snow where temperatures dipped below freezing; and in some places reaching even minus 15 degrees." The magical image was taken on a cold foggy day during his shikara ride. "The dal lake was partially frozen over and icy cold water cast a spell. There was a perfect reflection of the Zabarwan mountain range covered in snow. I clicked this photo and got the vibes of one of my dream destinations - Banhoff Alberta, Canada,” he adds.
