INDIA
AIR MILES
Business Traveller India talks to Rupin Suchak, renowned production designer and interior designer about his design inspirations, the journey into interior design, his next travel destination and more.
What inspired you to delve into the world of interior design?
A series of events pushed me into the world of interior design. I never planned to be a part of it consciously. What inspired me to continue my little journey ahead was just the fact that people resonated with my spaces emotionally. I got the opportunity and was able to bring forward something that came from an experimental world for clients/ friends who commissioned me for their spaces. The unwavering interest of my clients in my work has now helped me delve into it deeper.
What do you get inspired by for your designs?
I draw inspiration from everything that I see. Something as bizarre as a crumpled tissue paper to a trashed coconut peel can inspire me. I have conditioned my mind to not be stereotypical for almost a
decade now. It now helps me do what I want it to. There’s inspiration everywhere for a seeker and I feel there is no bigger artist to get inspired from than the creator of nature.
What’s next for you?
I am working on three-four things parallely. I do not like to hold onto one thing in design and stick to it. I am launching a brand of my own by this December. I am also preparing for two big feature films as a production designer for the coming year for which I am starting an extensive 13-country trip commencing November 1, 2022.
What are a few things that we would always find in your carryon luggage?
Ipad with my pencil, my laptop, a bandana, a mask, my yoga mat and anything location specific to my travels.
What’s the next travel destination on your wish list and why?
I really wish to travel to Mount Kailash in the lap of the Himalayas. It’s mainly for my spiritual growth. It’s been on my list for a long time and I am making sure it happens soon.
How would you describe a welldesigned space?
It’s a very subjective approach. What works for me ranges from the way the space looks to the utilities it has to o er. If all fits well, it’s a well-designed space. However, design is an ever evolving concept so, it’s easy to not like something or grow out of the designed space and want something more from it later.

SAILS ON
Sydney’s harbour is particularly serene this glorious morning.
Watching the crests of waves from our bow catch the morning sunlight, the re ected sparkles are hypnotic. A body of water so big, at 55 sq km it could almost swallow the entire island of Manhattan. Also known as Port Jackson Bay, it has forever been a beacon of wonder for visitors and the source of a great sense of pride for residents.
Speak to any Sydneysider who ies into the city a er a prolonged absence and they’ll tell you there’s an indescribable feeling when the
tentacled, arterial-like branches of Port Jackson come into view. I le the city a decade ago for a di erent life in Melbourne, but a cruise on an iconic Sydney ferry is a welcome recharge of the batteries and a reminder that this city will always feel like home.
Like many of the great global cities around the world, the Covid-19 pandemic dramatically shi ed its commercial, political and socioeconomic dimensions. Sydney experienced some of the strictest Covid-related lockdowns in the Western world. Most international visitors were denied entry to the country from April 2020, and citizens abroad were forced into 14 days
mandatory hotel quarantine if they wanted to return. Borders reopened to the world in February this year, but during its longest stretch in 2021, Sydney residents were locked down for 107 days. Household visits were banned and travel beyond a 5km radius was restricted to certain exempt workers.
But today there’s an obvious sense of optimism as I beeline for a famous harbourside neighbourhood called e Rocks. ere’s a sense here that life has returned to normal. is wedge of land just below the southern pylon of Sydney Harbour Bridge was named a er the construction of its original sandstone buildings. this spot that the families of soldiers and convicts would set up their lives and go on to birth modern Sydney.
Fast forward more than 200 years and, on a sunny ursday a ernoon, both tourists and well-dressed workers from Sydney’s Central Business District (CBD) ll the cafés and historic pubs that spew out into the cobblestone laneways – an attempt by local authorities to encourage more outdoor dining and social distancing.
URBAN RENEWAL
An urban planner once told me that to measure the investment in a city at any single moment in time, you only need to look for the cranes in its skyline. Nowhere is this more evident than in the estimated AU$6 billion (US$4.02 billion), globally renowned, urban-renewal project on the western waterfront of Sydney’s CBD.
Better known as Barangaroo –named a er a female indigenous leader of the local Eora Nation at the time of European colonisation – this project has transformed a disused
container terminal into a thriving waterfront and business precinct. Development began on the site in 2012 and is expected to be completed by 2024.
Featuring parkland, bars, restaurants and residential apartments, Barangaroo is also home to the new (and locally controversial) Crown Barangaroo casino and Crown Towers hotel, built by Australian billionaire James Packer. It’s an imposing landmark on the city’s skyline which has reminded locals about, and attracted tourists to, this rejuvenated district.
Recent data from digital outdoor media company QMS showed that throughout April and May 2022, domestic visitor numbers across Sydney’s CBD were 90 per cent of average 2019 levels, despite the impacts experienced from Covid-19 shutdowns. According to QMS, there are more than 20,000 businesses in the City of Sydney and they generate AU$138 billion
More than 20,000 businesses in the City of Sydney generate 7 per cent of Australia’s GDP
(US$92.5 billion) or 7 per cent of Australia’s entire GDP.
e best way to validate these gures is to speak with those at the coalface, and on my next stop I meander into Tate and Lyle, a busy local barber shop on the northern side of the city, owned by Jacob Martin.
Businesses like Martin’s (which opened only a few months before the events of March 2020) are reliant on city trade. But Martin tells me, at least for his modest vechair operation, that people are back and business is booming.
“I’m very lucky. I call where we’re located, the ‘golden triangle’,” he says. state-by-state approach to shuttering cities during the pandemic saved lives. In fact, many in the current conservative state government argue it was actually this level of draconianlike control measures which has allowed places like Sydney to ‘bounce back’ so ferociously.
TALE OF TWO CITIES
Rewind eight years, when Covid-19
would have seemed like the plot of a science ction novel, and the city was plagued by another virus; except this one was political.
e so-called ‘lockout’ laws (o cially the Liquor Amendment Act 2014) were enacted following a spate of alcohol-fuelled violence and deaths in the CBD. e conservative state government of the day imposed curfews in popular areas such as Kings
Cross, prohibiting entry to drinking venues a er 1.30am, and requiring bars to cease all liquor service a er 3am. e new laws signi cantly damaged late-night trade and a report to parliament found that they had cost the economy AU$16 million (US$10.72 million).
A er Sydney’s Covid lockdowns, many of these laws were li ed to encourage patronage and new businesses, but in the meantime the laws inadvertently pushed commerce and trade to other parts of the city. New late-night hubs that weren’t subjected to the laws, such as Newtown, emerged. Marrickville in the city’s once grungy inner-west is now home to eight cra breweries, brewpubs (a restaurant that sells beer brewed on the premises) and a slew of small wine bars.
Gregg Peek, co-founder and general manager of Dave’s Tours Sydney, operated a strong, domestic-focused business running tours through the region’s wineries and city breweries before the pandemic, and with no international travel options, things actually got busier in 2021.
“People like drinking when times are good and people are drinking when times are bad,” he says. “And so if we weren’t involved in alcohol [before the pandemic], I don’t know exactly where we would be.” Despite being in the depths of Sydney’s winter, Peek and his team are on track to achieve their second record month of tour sales in a row.
THE URGE TO RETURN
Like my own earlier self-re ection on the ferry, there are other former Sydneysiders who have begun to feel the irrepressible urge to return to Australia’s largest city. Either to live or simply just to get that sunny, beachside x.
Call it a revaluation of priorities or the city’s inescapable beauty, a host of big-name celebrities – Nicole Kidman, Isla Fisher and Rose Byrne to name just a few – have all begun an uno cial pilgrimage home.

his wife Lindsay Price were also recently lured back to the city by Destination NSW, the government agency promoting tourism and events in New South Wales. e agency launched the You Tube TV series Carry on with Curtis and Lindsay on September 25, showing the couple rediscovering the best bars, restaurants and attractions the city has to o er.
Despite gures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics showing a 58 per cent decrease in short-term overseas visitors to Australia in June 2022 compared to the same month in 2019, Destination NSW chief executive
Steve Cox says his state is wellprepared to welcome international visitors again.
“ e NSW Visitor Economy Strategy 2030 aims to ensure New South Wales is the premier visitor economy of the Asia-Paci c by 2030,” Cox says. e goal of the strategy is to achieve AU$65 billion (US$43.5 billion) in visitor expenditure by 2030, he adds.

‘There’s tangible excitement as Sydney celebrates a revival and we enter the roaring 2020s’

“New South Wales came out on top in the latest gures from Tourism Research Australia, which reveal it was the number one destination for domestic visitors during the year ending March 2022. ere’s tangible excitement in the air as Sydney celebrates a revival and we enter the roaring 2020s,” Cox says.
Another short stroll from Barangaroo, I meet Nick Lester, general manager of Captain Cook Cruises at King Street Wharf. We chat over co ee onboard his company’s newest agship superyacht, e Jackson.
e luxury AU$15 million (US$10.05 million) vessel, with a roo op cocktail bar and high-end restaurant, launched in February and can cater for up to 700 guests across three huge decks. Like most internationally focused tour operators, 2020 was a year to forget. In what was supposed to be a celebration of 50 years of riding the waves of Sydney Harbour, Captain Cook Cruises stared down a nearly 90 per cent loss in revenue.
While the launch of e Jackson represents a signi cant turning point for the company’s fortunes, Lester says one of its future aims is to capture a new market of experience-hungry, young Sydney residents. He says he expects 2024 to be the year when things go back to normal.
“Our business is still heavily skewed towards the tourism component. You might add on a cruise if you’re visiting Sydney for a short time,” Lester says. “So the domestic market is going to take a little more time. But we can tell we really are in a bit of a Renaissance sort of era… it’s almost like a post-war boom a er a crisis that we’re about to come out of.”
HOSTING EVENTS
News that Sydney will host the rst iteration of the South By South West Festival (SXSW) outside of the US in 2023 has added increasing optimism. “It doesn’t get any bigger than this for the music, screen, gaming and
tech world,” says Destination NSW’s Cox. “It will further cement Sydney’s reputation as the creative industries’ hub and events capital of the AsiaPaci c region.”
e pandemic showed that Sydney is resilient. Its businesses rise and fall, and rise again, like the gentle crest of a harbour swell. Sydney is a place of immense growth and although I don’t call it home anymore, I’m still a proud Sydneysider sailing its wave of optimism in 2022.

Sustainability - An Important Core Value
Ibelieve that the global environmental change mitigation, has pivoted from being a distant concern to a priority responsibility for organisations in the previous few years. Organisations have owned goals and adapted programs that have far-reaching impact and rightfully so.
As a business leader in a company that races to the goal of becoming net-zero, I take the sustainability commitment very seriously. As a citizen of the world, I am truly grateful that through the initiatives, I am contributing to the global cause that needs urgent attention. As a revenue generator, I realise the cost benefits in utilities by being 100 per cent green powered. When I communicate the sustainable living upgrades to my guests and stakeholders, I feel that I am a part of a collective responsibility. As a father, it is as simple as making a difference striving towards a cleaner environment for my children. The benefits are manifold.
Organisations are driven to a positive and sustainable impact wherever they do business, and this rigorous climate commitment to reach net-zero emissions is a needed step to do our part to help the communities and environments where we live, work and visit remain resilient and vibrant.
If one delves into the power of this movement towards sustainability, it originates from an awareness of treading gently and with genuine care. And, that has been our culture for eons, learnt from the scriptures, to be mindful of our actions, to live simply, to be grateful for what we have and most importantly to give more than we
take. In all aspects, we must take responsibility for the reckless plunder of nature and its resources.
Sometimes, one questions if they can make a difference to something so much bigger than them. I have learnt that you can because every small step counts. It has only been a few months for me at The Westin Hyderabad Mindspace, and we are the first and only hotel in Hyderabad to be 100 per cent green powered. We launched our electric vehicle charging station a couple of months ago. These and many other initiatives create pockets of responsible change that are all adding up.
In 2018, in my previous assignment, I spearheaded sustainability initiatives such as the eradication of single-use plastic with an on-site bottling plant, local and responsible sourcing of ingredients to reduce the carbon
footprint, being powered with 100 per cent renewable energy resources to water harvesting.
It is fascinating to learn that our guests, who lead organisations across sectors, truly appreciate these initiatives and are grateful for the opportunity to indulge in living sustainably with us. We are their preferred choice because we are adopting sustainability upgrades in every department. Moreover, there is a very strong correlation between investing in sustainability and the cost savings that flows through in time.
Hence, sustainability is the most powerful resource in business today. Investing and implementing initiatives that use renewable energy and are eco-friendly, and reducing dependence on non-green sources enable benefits that are far-reaching even in terms of return of investment. The impact that these initiatives have on minimizing the carbon footprint and climatic change is very important to account for as a collective global responsibility.
I believe the world has been converging, with technology but more importantly through a powerful united wave of thoughtprocesses that wants to contribute to the larger good. We are evolving from being takers to givers. Imagine your body where you are not depleting its resources recklessly, but are investing in its well-being and longevity. Imagine your home, where you engage in a responsible lifestyle, reduce wastage and adapt nurturing choices.
Now, imagine a world, where you are responsible for climate-change mitigation and environmental sustainability.

The importance of the Executive Lounge
Lounges are preferred over restaurants, for the element of peace and privacy they provide a corporate client
T
he outlook of a business traveller is a hassle-free space where they can continue to work without any interruptions in the flow of their day. It is no more just the room size, four fixture bathrooms and Michelinrated food and beverage outlets along with superlative services which will put you as a preferred choice of stay by these travellers. What used to be an added feature has now rather become a mandate, the executive lounge in business hotels; a well-equipped space that can cater to the needs of a business traveller with utmost precision and subtleness is seen as a compulsion when choosing a hotel to stay. When I say precision, it is all about understanding your guests and their preferences like the back of your hand - which cheese do they prefer? which wine do they want to be paired with it? how do they like their coffee? is the lunch spread lucrative enough? Ask yourself these questions and you will have loyalists for a lifetime for your brand, only if you find the answers.
Executive lounges serve as a home base for informal meetings with business contacts as well as an opportunity to interact with other guests and build further networks
Also, seek feedback from these welltravelled guests and it will always help you tailor their experience and make it seamless. Executive lounges in hotels have grown in popularity over the years and they are now an essential part of the Marriott Bonvoy benefits as well. Globally as Marriott Bonvoy members, lounge access benefits are
for Marriott Bonvoy Platinum Elite, Titanium Elite, and Ambassador Elite Members. They are the most practical option for business travellers because all of their needs are conveniently met in one location. In over 22 years of working in the hospitality industry, I’ve noticed that our public spaces, such as bars and restaurants, may not be a perfect environment for productivity, conducive to unwinding with a book or Netflix breaks, finishing the day’s paperwork with a coffee or a cocktail for business travellers. Hence, lounges are preferred over restaurants, for the element of peace and privacy they provide a corporate client. The executive lounge serves as a home base for informal meetings with business contacts as well as an opportunity to interact with other guests and build further networks. It provides an opportunity for the hotel to highlight its finesse. Personally, I am a huge fan of executive lounges in hotels and I do believe that the executive lounge should not only be a home away from home but also an office away from the office.
