In this book, the individual golf hole is the star, along with the course, as any of the featured courses will keep golfers of all skill levels entertained and challenged for the entire round. ery few professional golf tournaments survive for 60 years, and none at the same golf course — except for Colonial and The Masters. That is a wonderful testament to the enduring legacy of Marvin Leonard, who dedicated his passion for golf to building
a championship golf course in Texas with bentgrass greens, and then bringing in the world’s best golfers to play it.
The annual Colonial tournament is his ongoing gift to us all. I am honored to have played in 32 of them, and to have won it twice. Many wonderful memories are recounted here, and it is always fun to relive those moments. The great golf course, Ben Hogan, and his five titles, Fort Worth hospitality, all the great champions and other golfers that have enlivened the tournament over the years — these are the things I will always cherish.
While change is inevitable, in golf as in everything, it is important that we honor our past and our traditions. Colonial is one of the few remaining places that can do that on the PGA Tour. Our thanks go to the members who lend us their course for a week each year. Being a Texan, I am certainly a little biased, but you don’t have to be from here to find plenty to love, and remember, about Colonial. I’m sure the next 60 years will be just as great.
