Editor's Message Dear reader Welcome to Panama Mag, a magazine that paints a simple yet full picture of the Panama city – a place where history is part of the present moment and where luxury can be found amongst the simplest pleasures. Miguel is from Spain and I’m from Iran. In 2014 we took our first trip to Panama. The first morning at hotel we didn't know too much about the place or its surrounding area. We thought it would be great if we had an english printed touristic source that explained the city, some nice restaurants, activities, tours and areas. The second time we came to Panama, we asked our selves “Why not a touristic magazine?” So we decided to live in Panama and “Yes, make Panama Mag”. Our hope is that you will find their contents useful for planning your journey through the country’s biggest landmarks as well as its lesser known attractions. If this is your first time coming to Panama, then get ready to be enticed by its endless wonders from white sandy beaches to towering skyscrapers and a slew of shopping, dining and entertainment options to say the least. Recurrent visitors would know exactly what we are talking about, and to them we first wish a hearty welcome back and remind them of the fact that they will always discover something new and wondrous on each visit. We would love to hear about your experience, so please get in touch and share your thoughts and memories of Your Panamanian experience with us by emailing us at contact@panamamag.com. CASCOÂ VIEJO
KN CI OW TY LE DG E
Casco Viejo is the historic and cultural district of Panama City. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, Casco Viejo was established around 1673 by the Spanish colonialists, the Catholic Church, and other settlers. Casco Viejo went on to experience decades of neglect around the 1950s. The streets are filled with buildings that served as homes, cathedrals and churches and government buildings over centuries. Some of these structures have been painstakingly restored and now host museums, gourmet restaurants, quaint shops and upscale residences. In Las BĂłvedas you can cross the romantic Walk Esteban Huertas, who borders on the sea and offers magnificent sights. In the Park Bolivar a series of tables under umbrella creates a Bohemian atmosphere with musicians who delight the retainers and plays their melodies in the square. The mixture of the historical and the modern lives in harmony in Casco Viejo, making an agreeable experience and especially, memorably.

AVENIDA BALBOA
Balboa Avenue is the most modern and broad gauge of Panama City. It has six road lanes, a central island and two jetties. It is approximately 3.5 km long and is located along the Pacific Ocean, so it is one of the biggest attractions for real estate development in the city. Along the avenue lies one of the main financial centers of the city. The route is connected to the South Corridor across the bridge of the Slaves, and to via Israel by the bridge Paitilla. Its traffic is estimated at 75 000 vehicles day. It was completely remodeled and expanded in late 2009 with the opening of the coastal strip, becoming a tourist attraction and important meeting point for the city of Panama.

COSTA DEL ESTE
The Costa del Este project was presented to the public inn 1995, and since then it has become one of the largest real estate developments in Panama City. The 310-hectare area has become an important and unique place in the city, where several skyscrapers are being constructed. One of its sections, where the Industrial Park is now located, was known as the "Vertedero de Panamรก Viejo" because it is a piece of land created by an artificial deposit of material that was extracted to build the Panama Canal for years. This large tract of land was neglected, but recently it has become the Industrial Area (used for distribution centers and merchandise). The remaining sections were mangroves and jungle, where the most modern buildings in this city were constructed. To enable the land of mangroves, millions of tons of earth and rock were poured, mostly from a hill near the Villa Guadalupe area, which was removed completely.
AMADOR CAUSEWAY
KN CI OW TY LE DG E
It's a road that connects the mainland of Panama City with four Pacific islands, which form a small archipelago. The islands of this archipelago are Naos, Perico, Culebra and Flamenco. This road was built in 1913 by the US government with rocks excavated of Corte Culebra during construction of the Panama Canal. The site was originally part of a US military complex known as Fort Amador, established to protect the entrance to the Canal. The place was transformed into a thriving tourist attraction, after these areas were reversed under the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. Currently, it is one of the most popular sites in the city, has many recreational facilities such as restaurants, bars, nightclubs and a convention center and a paved sidewalk, widely used for walking, jogging or biking. It offers excellent views towards the entrance of the Panama Canal and the Bridge of the Americas, as well as to the city and Panama Bay views. Near its entrance we can find the Biodiversity Museum, designed by Canadian architect Frank Gehry.

SAN FRANCISCO
This corregimiento was created on August 9, 1926, three years after President Belisario Porras officially founded the community of San Francisco de la Caleta. This name is believed to have its origin in the image of a saint found by fishermen from this place, on the beach known as Playa Trujillo. The saint was identified, by the devotees, as Saint Francis of Assisi. The Claretians later built in this community the well-known Church of San Francisco de la Caleta, which was inaugurated on July 2, 1933. The Recreational Park Omar Torrijos, one of the most extensive parks of the city, with a route of approximately 5 km. In addition to the many cultural and recreational facilities that this park has, the National Library of Panama is located there. The ATLAPA Convention Center, the largest in the country and one of the most important in the region, is also housed in this district. 4 This center, which covers about 8 ha, houses most international events, exhibitions and concerts. The city was moved to a new location , some 10 km southwest , to be destroyed in an attack by English pirate Henry Morgan , at the beginning of the decade 1670. From the original city, considered as the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of America, are today several ruins that make up this archaeological site. Opposite the old Plaza Mayor are the ruins of the cathedral ; whose tower, 30 meters high, it is unusually located next to the apse. Originally made of wood, the cathedral was rebuilt with stronger materials, between 1619 and 1626. The ruins of the tower were intervened architecturally to allow visitors to use it as a lookout .
CANAL DE PANAMA
KN CI OW TY LE DG E
The Panama Canal is an inter-oceanic navigation route between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean that crosses the Isthmus of Panama at its narrowest point, whose length is 65 km. There are locks on each end to lift boats up the Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of work required for the excavation of the canal, 26 meters above sea level, then down to the level of the Pacific or the Atlantic. Since it's opening on August 15, 1914, it has managed to shorten time and distance maritime communication, boosting the economic and comercial exchange by providing a relatively cheap path between the two oceans and decisively influencing patterns of world trade, driving economic growth in developed countries and on way of developing, in addition to providing the basic impetus for economic expansion in many remote regions.

INSPIRING BIOGRAPHY Roberto Duran Born on June 16, 1951, in El Chorrillo, Panama, Durán rose from poverty to become a famed professional boxer. Known for his punching power, he won world championships in four weight classes, though his reputation took a hit with his "no más" loss to Sugar Ray Leonard in 1980. Durán retired from boxing in 2002, and was elected to the World Boxing Hall of Fame and the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 2006 and '07, respectively. Roberto Durán Samaniego was born on June 16, 1951, in the slums of El Chorrillo, Panama. His father, Margarito, an American of Mexican heritage, was stationed in Panama for the U.S. Army when Roberto was born, but left soon afterward. Growing up in poverty, Durán hustled for money by shining shoes, selling newspapers and dancing on the streets. He learned to box at the Neco de La Guardia Gym, and turned pro at the age of 16. Lean and hungry, Durán powered his way up the rankings as a young fighter. On June 26, 1972, he scored a 13-round TKO of Scotsman Ken Buchanan to claim the WBA lightweight championship.
He suffered his first loss against 31 wins in a non-title light welterweight fight against Esteban de Jesús that November, but later avenged that defeat by knocking out de Jesús en route to another 41 consecutive victories.
In those days, Durán combined impressive speed with a fearsome tenacity and powerful punches that earned him the nickname "Manos de Piedra" (Hands of Stone). After defeating de Jesús again to add the WBC lightweight title to his collection, Durán abdicated his belts in 1979 to move up to the welterweight class, where he quickly proved he could handle bigger opponents with a win over former champion Carlos Palomino.
Durán returned to prominence later in the decade, outlasting Iran Barkley in 12 rounds to win the WBC middleweight title on February 24, 1989. He lost a second time to Sugar Ray Leonard in a match for the WBC super middleweight title later that year, and remained a game, yet diminished contender over the next several years.
The pinnacle of his career came on June 20, 1980, the "Brawl in Montreal" at Olympic Stadium. Facing the undefeated Sugar Ray Leonard, Durán battered the former Olympic gold medalist over 15 rounds to win the WBC welterweight championship. Their rematch on Nov. 25, at the Superdome in New Orleans, Louisiana, concluded in bizarre fashion; the normally relentless Durán suddenly quit near the end of the eighth round, allowing Leonard to regain his title. The enduring legend is that Durán begged out of the fight by repeating "no más" (no more), though the boxer insists he never said those words. Durán moved up another weight class, and on June 16, 1983 —his 32nd birthday—he stopped Davey Moore in eight rounds to win the WBA light middleweight title. He packed on more pounds to fight undefeated middleweight champion Marvin Hagler in November, earning praise for pushing the champ a full 15 rounds before taking the loss. However, there were fewer positive reviews after a subsequent defeat, a brutal second-round knockout at the hands of Thomas "Hitman" Hearns the following June.
At age 49, Durán won a 12-round decision over Pat Lawlor to claim the super middleweight title from the fringe NBA organization. He lost the belt to Héctor Camacho on July 14, 2001, in what turned out to be his final fight. Durán suffered broken ribs and a punctured lung in a car accident later that year, and officially retired in January 2002 with a career record of 103-16-0 and 70 knockouts. One of the few boxers to win sanctioned championships in four weight classes and compete professionally across five decades, he is considered one of the greatest pound-for-pound fighters of all time.

The Pearl Islands (Spanish: ArchipiĂŠlago de las Perlas or Islas de las Perlas) are a group of 200 or more islands and islets (many tiny and uninhabited) lying about 30 miles (48 km) off the Pacific coast of Panama in the Gulf of Panama.

PEARL ISLANDS
In 1979, the Shah of Iran briefly took exile on Isla Contadora. Domestic airlines Air Panama and Aero Perlas run frequent flights between Panama City and Contadora, Isla San JosĂŠ and Isla del Rey. The largest island, at 234 square kilometres (90 sq mi), is Isla del Rey ("Island of the King"), its name probably referring to Christ the King rather than to a secular king. Isla del Rey has several towns, most notably San Miguel. It is easily larger than the other Pearl Islands combined, and is the second largest island in Panama, after Coiba.
The most notable island is Contadora Island (or Isla Contadora in Spanish), known for its resorts. Contadora was said to be used by the Spanish conquistadors as a stop for taking inventory of booty prior to returning to Spain, hence the name (contador means counter or bookkeeper in Spanish). Contadora is a resort island, with many homes owned by wealthy Panamanians. There is a large hotel and other cabins available. Most of the resort workers live on nearby Isla Saboga. Other islands are Bolano Island, Buena Vista Island, Cana Island (Panama), Casaya Island, Chapera Island, Chitre Island, Cocos Island (Panama), Espiritu Santo Island (Panama), Galera Island, Gallo Island, Gilbraleon Island, Lampon Island, Marin Island, Mina Island, Mogo Mogo o Pajaro, Pacheca Island, Pachequille Island, Pedro Gonzalez Island, Puerco Island, San Jose Island, Senora Island, Vivenda Island, Vivienda Island and Viveros Island.

Three million years ago the Isthmus of Panama was created. Until then North and South America were divided by sea. It was the biggest and reportedly the most significant geological event in 60 million years. Prior to that date as the Earth's plates had begun to join the Pearl Islands were created and they emerged from the sea. On Contadora Island and other islands in the group pre-Columbian artifacts have been found. The biggest island is Isla del Rey where more than fifteen pre-Columbian recognised archeological sites of the “Cuevas” and “Cocle” cultures have been identified. However none of the original population remain.

The island of Galera has a façade of very tall coconut palm trees and a white sandy beach. Strong currents, combined with shallows and jagged reefs surrounding the island, make navigation near the island perilous.
The islands were first occupied by Indians who were (with their leader Terarequí) wiped out within two years of the islands' discovery by the Spanish. Spaniard Vasco Nunez de Balboa named the islands Pearl Islands on his discovery of them in 1513 due to the many pearls which were found there. Another Spaniard, Gaspar de Morales, exterminated 20 local Indian chiefs not long after and gave them to his dogs to tear to pieces. The Spaniards then needed workers to harvest pearls and imported slave labour in the 16th century from Africa whose descendants now live on the islands, particularly del Rey. The Islands were frequently used by pirates in the years that followed and were relatively undisturbed until the 1960s and 1970s when the building of the resort on Contadora took place to which the Shah of Iran retreated in 1979.

At low tide, the northern end of the island is joined by a sand bar to the small island of El Morro, and the southeastern end is 270 metres (886 feet) from the neighboring Urabá island. The island has a tropical rain forest climate, with average daytime temperatures of 83 °F (28 °C). It is famous for its beautiful beaches, clear waters, soft sands, and wildlife refuge.
Taboga Island, also known as the "Island of Flowers", is a volcanic island in the Gulf of Panama. It is a tourist destination, about 20 km from Panama City, Panama. The island was discovered in the 16th century and was originally named Isla de San Pedro by the Spanish explorer Vasco Núñez de Balboa. Its current name derives from an Indian word aboga ("many fish"). The island's first settlers were Indian slaves from Venezuela and Nicaragua. The small town of San Pedro was founded in 1524 by Hernando de Luque, dean of the Panama cathedral. The town church of the same name is claimed to be the second-oldest church in the hemisphere. Rose of Lima (1586–1617), the first Catholic saint of the Americas, may have been born on the island. French painter Paul Gauguin visited the island in 1887.
Tourism is the major economic activity on the island, although fishing and agriculture are also practiced. The island has become a popular touristic attraction due to its beautiful natural areas and its proximity to Panama City. Daily ferries link the city to the island, most of them departing from the Amador Causeway.

Gamboa Rainforest Gamboa is a small town in the Republic of Panama. It was one of a handful of permanent Canal Zone townships, built to house employees of the Panama Canal and their dependents. The name Gamboa is the name of a tree of the quince family Experience the magic of the virgin rainforest of Gamboa, ascending some 280 feet from the shadowy forest floor through the dense undergrowth and up to the sun drenched canopy with its thousand shades of green that are only interrupted by the vibrant colors of flowering trees, this is the first and only tram in Panama.
Colorful birds and butterflies are abundant here, and you might also encounter sloth or white-faced capuchin monkeys and hear the howler monkey cry out in the distance. After you could visit the orquidearium, butterfly house, fresh water aquarium and snake house, then you can take a boat trip through the Panama Canal waterways to visit the islands that once upon time were mountains and were created when the area was flooded to form the Gatun Lake. This area is a sanctuary for the native flora and fauna. You can easily spot monkeys, toucans, alligators and turtles.
POLLERAS POLLERAS
Polleras are a form of Spanish colonial dress enforced sometime between the 16th and 17th centuries on indigenous populations in the Andes by hacienda owners or hacendados. Traditional polleras come from peasant dress from southern Spanish regions, like AndalucĂa. Today, polleras are associated with indigenous and folkloric forms of dress.
P
ollera is a Spanish term for a big one-piece skirt used mostly in traditional. festivities. Polleras are made from different materials, such as cotton or wool and tend to have colorful decorations. Most of the decorations are embroidered, flowers and regional animals are among the most common designs found in polleras.
In Panama, handmade polleras are worn during festivals or celebrations. Normally, dominant color is white, and adornments are colorful flower designs. Girls and women would generally own two polleras during their life: one before age 16 and one at adulthood. A single pollera can cost from several hundred to several thousands of dollars and take up to a year to create. The gold and pearl mosquetas and tembleques that provides a pollera are generally passed down as heirlooms through generations.

The Psychology of Success By Joyce Marter “Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” — Maya Angelou In life, we are each dealt a different hand of hardships and blessings. It would appear that life is not fair in her dealings, but I believe we are each given the exact hand we need to learn the lessons of our unique, psychospiritual journey. In my practice, I see that many people move through life by simply going along with the current, letting outside forces determine their direction. Furthermore, we all unconsciously recreate what is familiar until we choose something better. If we are open to the process of learning, suffering bears great wisdom that guides us towards enlightenment. One of the greatest gifts I have reaped from being a psychotherapist is the collective wisdom of my clients. It’s a high honor to intimately accompany them as they overcome life challenges, embrace their gifts and strengths, and move towards selfactualization. Being successful requires us to wake up and be present in our own lives, aligning ourselves our greatest destiny and mapping out the way. We must consciously select a path that facilitates the awakening of our awareness, both individually and collectively.
Everything in life is interconnected. As we evolve, our relationships, work and lives blossom. And, conversely, as we are impacted by our relationships and our work, we evolve. As a therapist for nearly 20 years and an entrepreneur for 15, I’ve found that my psychological health and career success are really two sides of the same coin. We can only be prosperous in love, health, time and money if we are conscious, well and balanced. To master the psychology of success, I recommend the following: Become conscious of why you do what you do. We all come into our careers or life situations for a reason. We learn our roles in our families-of-origin and often recreate patterns until we work through them. Give yourself permission to let go of old behaviors that are no longer working for you. Open yourself up to prosperity. Cognitive psychology suggests that our thoughts precede our feelings and behaviors. Be mindful not to constrain yourself with self-limiting beliefs. As Dr. Joyce Brothers said, “Success is a state of mind. If you want success, start thinking of yourself as a success.” Trust in the abundance theory, and welcome all that is good into your life.
Bring your attention to the present. Honor the past, learn from it, and let it go. Don’t obsess or worry about the future. Discover the power of mindfulness practices such as deep breathing and meditation, which keep you firmly grounded in the present moment. Discover the power of intention. Wayne Dyer says, “Our intentions create our reality.” Identify the primary intentions of your life, write them out, and live by them. Develop your vision. As in sports psychology, positive visualization increases the likelihood of success. Ask yourself, if you had a magic wand, what would you want? Aim high. Look for how your strengths and gifts can benefit others, creating the type of “win-win” scenario that the universe will gladly support. Consider creating a vision board. Silence your inner critic. Pay attention to your self-talk and notice if you have negative thoughts that are likely rooted in the past. Separate from negative beliefs by “zooming out” and looking at situations from an objective and neutral place. Practice positive thinking. Understand that positivity attracts positivity through the laws of attraction. Keep a gratitude journal. Choose to be your best cheerleader rather than your worst critic. Practice acceptance. Don’t expend energy fighting or resisting what you cannot change (other people, their feelings, their behaviors, etc.). Instead, empower yourself to change what you can (your thinking, your behaviors, your boundaries, etc.). If for no other reason than to free yourself, forgive and let go of resentments.
Appreciate that personal and professional progress is not linear. We all go through setbacks. It’s how we respond to those setbacks that determines if we are going to endlessly cycle or stagnate or grow and develop. Cut yourself some slack and recognize we are all human and are works in progress. Learn from mistakes, be resilient and forge ahead. Love yourself. Practice self-compassion and self-care. Establish work/life balance and a positive support network for yourself. Demonstrate this self-love by making a commitment to achieving your greatest successes in life. Success is to live your life openly, honestly and courageously in a manner that is aligned with the highest good of self and others — and to the greatest extent possible.

TECHNOLOGY An autonomous drone that can transport humans will start ferrying passengers around Dubai this summer. The head of Dubai's transportation agency said that self-flying taxis would start taking people across the city starting from July. The city will use the Ehang 184 for the airborne service. The Ehang is a drone that can fly without human direction and carry a single passenger and their bag. It can take one person on a journey up to 23 minutes long. "This is not only a model, we have actually experimented with this vehicle flying in Dubai's skies," said Mattar al-Tayer, head of Dubai's transportation agency.
Dubai isn't the first city to show an interest in using the Ehang, first unveiled at CES in 2016, as part of its transport system. Las Vegas announced last summer that it would start trialing the drones for public use.
