Editor's Message Dear reader Welcome to Panama Mag, a magazine that paints a simple yet full picture of the Panama city – a place where history is part of the present moment and where luxury can be found amongst the simplest pleasures. Miguel is from Spain and I’m from Iran. In 2014 we took our first trip to Panama. The first morning at hotel we didn't know too much about the place or its surrounding area. We thought it would be great if we had an english printed touristic source that explained the city, some nice restaurants, activities, tours and areas. The second time we came to Panama, we asked our selves “Why not a touristic magazine?” So we decided to live in Panama and “Yes, make Panama Mag”. Our hope is that you will find their contents useful for planning your journey through the country’s biggest landmarks as well as its lesser known attractions. If this is your first time coming to Panama, then get ready to be enticed by its endless wonders from white sandy beaches to towering skyscrapers and a slew of shopping, dining and entertainment options to say the least. Recurrent visitors would know exactly what we are talking about, and to them we first wish a hearty welcome back and remind them of the fact that they will always discover something new and wondrous on each visit. We would love to hear about your experience, so please get in touch and share your thoughts and memories of Your Panamanian experience with us by emailing us at contact@panamamag.com. CASCO VIEJO
KN CI OW TY LE DG E
Casco Viejo is the historic and cultural district of Panama City. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, Casco Viejo was established around 1673 by the Spanish colonialists, the Catholic Church, and other settlers. Casco Viejo went on to experience decades of neglect around the 1950s. The streets are filled with buildings that served as homes, cathedrals and churches and government buildings over centuries. Some of these structures have been painstakingly restored and now host museums, gourmet restaurants, quaint shops and upscale residences. In Las Bóvedas you can cross the romantic Walk Esteban Huertas, who borders on the sea and offers magnificent sights. In the Park Bolivar a series of tables under umbrella creates a Bohemian atmosphere with musicians who delight the retainers and plays their melodies in the square. The mixture of the historical and the modern lives in harmony in Casco Viejo, making an agreeable experience and especially, memorably.

AVENIDA BALBOA
Balboa Avenue is the most modern and broad gauge of Panama City. It has six road lanes, a central island and two jetties. It is approximately 3.5 km long and is located along the Pacific Ocean, so it is one of the biggest attractions for real estate development in the city. Along the avenue lies one of the main financial centers of the city. The route is connected to the South Corridor across the bridge of the Slaves, and to via Israel by the bridge Paitilla. Its traffic is estimated at 75 000 vehicles day. It was completely remodeled and expanded in late 2009 with the opening of the coastal strip, becoming a tourist attraction and important meeting point for the city of Panama.

AMADOR CAUSEWAY
KN CI OW TY LE DG E
It's a road that connects the mainland of Panama City with four Pacific islands, which form a small archipelago. The islands of this archipelago are Naos, Perico, Culebra and Flamenco. This road was built in 1913 by the US government with rocks excavated of Corte Culebra during construction of the Panama Canal. The site was originally part of a US military complex known as Fort Amador, established to protect the entrance to the Canal. The place was transformed into a thriving tourist attraction, after these areas were reversed under the Torrijos-Carter Treaties. Currently, it is one of the most popular sites in the city, has many recreational facilities such as restaurants, bars, nightclubs and a convention center and a paved sidewalk, widely used for walking, jogging or biking. It offers excellent views towards the entrance of the Panama Canal and the Bridge of the Americas, as well as to the city and Panama Bay views. Near its entrance we can find the Biodiversity Museum, designed by Canadian architect Frank Gehry.

Archaeological site where it was located in Panama City since it's founding in 1519 until 1671. The city was moved to a new location , some 10 km southwest , to be destroyed in an attack by English pirate Henry Morgan , at the beginning of the decade 1670. From the original city, considered as the first European settlement on the Pacific coast of America, are today several ruins that make up this archaeological site. Opposite the old Plaza Mayor are the ruins of the cathedral ; whose tower, 30 meters high, it is unusually located next to the apse. Originally made of wood, the cathedral was rebuilt with stronger materials, between 1619 and 1626. The ruins of the tower were intervened architecturally to allow visitors to use it as a lookout .
CANAL DE PANAMA
KN CI OW TY LE DG E
The Panama Canal is an inter-oceanic navigation route between the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean that crosses the Isthmus of Panama at its narrowest point, whose length is 65 km. There are locks on each end to lift boats up the Gatun Lake, an artificial lake created to reduce the amount of work required for the excavation of the canal, 26 meters above sea level, then down to the level of the Pacific or the Atlantic. Since it's opening on August 15, 1914, it has managed to shorten time and distance maritime communication, boosting the economic and comercial exchange by providing a relatively cheap path between the two oceans and decisively influencing patterns of world trade, driving economic growth in developed countries and on way of developing, in addition to providing the basic impetus for economic expansion in many remote regions.

IGLESIA SANTO DOMINGO AND THE FLAT ARCH
Originally constructed in the 17th century, the church and convent of Santo Domingo were never rebuilt after a fire that destroyed them in 1756. The only thing that did survive – for centuries – was the Flat Arch (Arco Chato) sitting at the entrance.
The Arch stood as a testament to the fact that Panama was spared from major seismic activity.
INSPIRING BIOGRAPHY STEVE JOBS The American businessman and technology visionary who is best known as the co-founder, chairman, and chief executive officer of Apple Inc, was born on February 24, 1955. His parents were two University of Wisconsin graduate students, Joanne Carole Schieble and Syrian-born Abdulfattah Jandali. They were both unmarried at the time. Jandali, who was teaching in Wisconsin when Steve was born, said he had no choice but to put the baby up for adoption because his girlfriend's family objected to their relationship. The baby was adopted at birth by Paul Reinhold Jobs (1922–1993) and Clara Jobs (1924–1986). Later, when asked about his "adoptive parents," Jobs replied emphatically that Paul and Clara Jobs "were my parents." He stated in his authorized biography that they "were my parents 1,000%." Unknown to him, his biological parents would subsequently marry (December 1955), have a second child, novelist Mona Simpson, in 1957, and divorce in 1962. The Jobs family moved from San Francisco to Mountain View, California when Steve was five years old. The parents later adopted a daughter, Patti.
Paul was a machinist for a company that made lasers, and taught his son rudimentary electronics and how to work with his hands. The father showed Steve how to work on electronics in the family garage, demonstrating to his son how to take apart and rebuild electronics such as radios and televisions. As a result, Steve became interested in and developed a hobby of technical tinkering. Clara was an accountant who taught him to read before he went to school.
He continued auditing classes at Reed while sleeping on the floor in friends' dorm rooms, returning Coke bottles for food money, and getting weekly free meals at the local Hare Krishna temple.
Jobs's youth was riddled with frustrations over formal schooling. At Monta Loma Elementary school in Mountain View, he was a prankster whose fourth-grade teacher needed to bribe him to study. Jobs tested so well, however, that administrators wanted to skip him ahead to high school—a proposal his parents declined. Jobs then attended Cupertino Junior High and Homestead High School in Cupertino, California. During the following years Jobs met Bill Fernandez and Steve Wozniak, a computer whiz kid. Following high school graduation in 1972, Jobs enrolled at Reed College in Portland, Oregon. Reed was an expensive college which Paul and Clara could ill afford. They were spending much of their life savings on their son's higher education. Jobs dropped out of college after six months and spent the next 18 months dropping in on creative classes, including a course on calligraphy.
In 1976, Wozniak invented the Apple I computer. Jobs, Wozniak, and Ronald Wayne, an electronics industry worker, founded Apple computer in the garage of Jobs's parents in order to sell it. They received funding from a then-semi-retired Intel productmarketing manager and engineer Mike Markkula. Through Apple, Jobs was widely recognized as a charismatic pioneer of the personal computer revolution and for his influential career in the computer and consumer electronics fields. Jobs also co-founded and served as chief executive of Pixar Animation Studios; he became a member of the board of directors of The Walt Disney Company in 2006, when Disney acquired Pixar. Jobs died at his California home around 3 p.m. on October 5, 2011, due to complications from a relapse of his previously treated pancreatic cancer.

Pedasi is one of Panama’s most authentic and charming small towns. Located at the southeast corner of the Azuero Peninsula, Pedasi is situated in a golden corner of this country, within a few minutes of hidden white-sand beaches and undiscovered rocky headlands. The town itself, with a population of about 2,000, has the atmosphere of a village. It’s big enough to be a viable lifestyle option, but small enough to make you feel like you’re an active stakeholder in a growing community. Entering Pedasi is like taking a step back in time. The local population is friendly and hospitable. People here go out of their way to be helpful. The region is one of the most traditional and folkloric in Panama. Baseball is an important pastime and is taken seriously in these parts and once a year, the small town is invaded by tens of thousands of Carnival-goers. Otherwise, it’d be hard to imagine a sleepier outpost. The Azuero Peninsula constitutes Panama’s southernmost landmass. Jutting into the Pacific, the peninsula in general and Pedasi in particular are an excellent staging post for forays into the Pacific. This is the country’s “tuna coast,” and just offshore are big numbers of yellow-fin tuna. The waters around Pedasi yield both inshore and offshore fish species. Pedasi is also considered as one of the best places for witnessing the annual migration of the humpback whale. During the season (June to November), you could watch the spectacle from your kitchen window.

WHAT YOUR HEELS SAY OF YOUR AMBITION
Show me your heels, I shall tell you what are your aspiration.
WOMEN
A priori, it looks like the height of heels is chosen according to our desires, to our tastes or still to our capacity to carry them. In reality, according to an American study relieved by Yahoo Style, the fact of perching on 3 or 12cm would also depend on our place of residence, and more exactly on the standard of living of the latter. For example, when an American moves in a more smart district that his, in particular in a big city as Los Angeles or New York, height of its heels conforms suddenly with that of her new neighbours. That it is a question of kitten heels or vertiginous stiletto heels, the newcomer will tend copy/to stick the style of her congeners in the upper lifestyle, than she moreover has the means there or not. " Most of people want to improve their standard of living and adopt of the blow the behavior of those who already have a status raised in the company " it explains, qualifying this phenomenon of " conformist effect ". Nevertheless, the inverse mechanism is much less marked. The researchers were able to notice that if one of the women of the study was brought to move in a less favored district that his, her clearly less tended to imitate the style of her congeners by keeping the same height of heels. A way for her, according to the researchers, to preserve the status acquired in their previous environment, at least symbolically.

HEALTH What Happens During an Asthma Attack
Having an asthma attack can be a bit scary. As airways narrow in response to asthma triggers (be it pollen, secondhand smoke, or cat dander), you may experience rapid, shallow breathing, shortness of breath, wheezing, and coughing. Attacks can range in intensity from mild to severe; in severe cases, an asthma attack could be a medical emergency. However, most mild asthma attacks should respond to treatment with an inhaler or nebulizer containing a bronchodilator, known as rescue medication (the best-known bronchodilator is called albuterol). If you have asthma that is more severe, your doctor will probably prescribe controller or maintenance medications that can fight the underlying lung inflammation. Taking these medication can help prevent asthma attacks. However, you will need to take them every day; what's more, such drugs wont relieve symptoms once they get started—rescue medications should be used to treat the symptoms of an asthma attack.
There are some positive action steps you can take that could make a difference to help during a asthma attack.
Create a calm setting First, get your friend to sit down in a quiet place and provide as calming a surrounding atmosphere as possible. Loosen their clothing, if it is restricting. Be verbally supportive Talk quietly to your loved one in a soothing voice. Offer words of encouragement and ask if there is anything specific you can do to help Mention their rescue inhaler A rescue inhaler will often relieve symptoms within a few minutes. Asthmatics should always have their rescue inhalers with them, but if you don't see your friend using it, then remind them or offer to go get it, if it has been left behind
Help with breathing techniques Help your friend/loved one practice some slow, deep breathing or meditation, if they are willing. This will help them to relax. Stress and excitement don't really cause asthma attacks, but they can worsen them. So, helping your friend take steps to calm down is a great idea Offer to drive If your friend doesn't have an inhaler to use or symptoms continue to be severe or worsen, offer to drive him/her to the doctor or emergency room for help. A severe asthma attack needs to be treated!
How to Stop Fighting : Tips for Married Couples 7 dispute diffusers and tips for improving the way you argue. By Diane Lore Reviewed by Kimball Johnson, MD Becky Robbins says she and her husband, Neil -- married for eight years -rarely fight. That doesn't mean that there isn't conflict. It's just that she screams "kind of like the queen in Alice in Wonderland," uttering phrases reminiscent of "off with their heads." Neil responds like most guys in marriage fights. He hides in "the bedroom playing video games." "Everyone in a relationship argues," Debbie Mandel, author of Addicted to Stress, says. "However, how loudly you scream or how frequently you fight does not predict the outcome of your marriage." What qualifies as fighting fair in marriage essentially comes down to how each partner feels when they leave the ring. If both are hearty "boxers" who love a few rounds in the ring and then are ready for some make-up sex, the marriage is probably fine. But if people leave the ring angry, bitter, and resentful, perhaps it's time to re-evaluate, either together or with the help of a therapist or psychologist
HOW TO KEEP THE PEACE Experts on wedded bliss -- some with the pedigree of education and others with the scars of experience -- have recommended the following strategies for smoothing things over: Go to bed angry. Several therapists and couples say forget that adage about always resolving anger before turning in -- and let someone sleep on the couch. "We've found that going to bed angry is often the best choice," says Lisa Earle McLeod author. "It allows partners to clear their thoughts, get some sleep, and make a date to resume the fight (which might seem less important in the light of day)." Take a break. Even a 30-second break can help a couple push the reset button on a fight, licensed clinical counselor Timothy Warneka says. "Stop, step out of the room, and reconnect when everyone's a little calmer."
Own up to your part of the fight. Melody Brooke, a licensed marriage and family therapist, says two things derail intense fights: admitting what you did to get your partner ticked off and expressing empathy toward your partner. Brooke, author of The Blame Game, says this can be difficult but is typically extremely successful. "Letting down our defenses in the heat of battle seems counterintuitive, but it is actually very effective with couples." Find the humor. Pamela Bodley and her husband have been married 23 years, "and Lord knows it wasn't easy in the early years," she says. "But it's much, much better now. We have a great sense of humor." Her husband Paul has kept the mood light by always saying he knows women keep skillets in their purse. So when he does something wrong, Bodley says, "I just pretend to hit him over the head with a skillet and say, 'TING!'" Shut up and touch. Brooke says there's a point where discussing the matter doesn't help. So couples need to just hold each other when nothing else seems to be working. "Reconnecting through touch is very important." Ban the "but." Jane Straus, author of Enough is Enough! Stop Enduring and Start Living Your Extraordinary Life, says couples often derail a resolution when they acknowledge the other partner's position and then add a "but" in their next breath, reaffirming their own. An example: "I can understand why you didn't pick up the dishes in the family room, but why do you think I'm the maid?" Remember what's important. "We soon realized that we don't have two beings in a marriage," Jacqueline Freeman says. "We actually have three: me, my husband, and the marriage. And we have to take good care of all three. So if we've been arguing about whose fault it is that the house is so messy, I might defend myself saying I was busy working on a project that will bring in more income, and he might say he was busy fixing something on the house that was broken. We used to be able to carry on
A conversation like this for quite some time. But over the years, we seem to have developed a 15-minute timer for arguing. [Then] one of us will suddenly remember the key question: ''What's best for the marriage?" How to Keep the Peace continued... Therapists also say that it's important to realize that no marriage is perfect and that fighting is often a part and flow of compromise. I have come to realize that we are not normal," Robbins says. "But as they say, 'Normal is just a cycle on the washing machine.'"

FOOD around the world PANAMANIAN CUISINE
Panamanian cuisine is a mix of African, Spanish, and Native American techniques, dishes, and ingredients, reflecting its diverse population. Since Panama is a land bridge between two continents, it has a large variety of tropical fruits, vegetables and herbs that are used in native cooking. Typical Panamanian foods are mildly flavored, without the pungency of some of Panama's Latin American and Caribbean neighbors. Common ingredients are maize, rice, wheat flour, plantains, yuca (cassava), beef, chicken, pork and seafood. Many Panamanian dishes are made out of corn. The preparation is different from that of other Latin American corn dishes (such as corn tortillas and arepas), given that the kernel is first cooked in water and then ground in order to obtain a dough (as opposed to using corn flour to obtain the dough). Fresh corn is also used in some dishes.

Did you know... There is a city in Morocco (called “CHAOUEN” for short) is a bewitchingly BLUE-washed dreamland. Viewing it from above is like looking at a city under water visiting on the ground is a transcendent full-immersion experience where the color wraps around you on every winding street. Yet it's not the mountains or the "Game of Thrones" architecture that travelers come in their thousands to see.
It's the color -- a gorgeous BLUE rinse that covers not only Chaouen's houses but its mosques, government buildings, public squares and even its lampposts and trash cans.
When Hitler’s growing power drove JEWS from their homes in the 1930s, many refugees once again fled to safety in Chefchaouen. It was these people that painted the town the vivid shade of blue it is known for today.
IN JUDAISM, BLUE REPRESENTS THE SKY AS WELL AS THE HEAVENS, REMINDING EVERYONE TO LIVE A LIFE FULL OF SPIRITUAL AWARENESS. BACK IN THE LATE 1400’S JEWS THAT FLED TO SFED ALSO PAINTED THEIR HOMES BLUE AS A SOURCE OF INSPIRATION WHEN THE BLUE GROUND BECOMES WET IT SERIOUSLY STARTS TO LOOK LIKE A WONDROUS WATER WORLD.
Until 1948, most of the Jewish families remained living here happily amongst their neighbors, Muslim and native Berber families. But in 1948, most of the Jewish families left for Israel. Nowadays not only do locals enjoy the symbolism behind the blue, but they also say that it helps keep their homes cooler. Tourists are welcomed with open arms, as locals love to show off their amazing village and all that it has to offer.

Did you know: Apple may not become an automaker but still even wants to develop its own technology for autonomous vehicles. MEDICAL
HIGH-TECH tiny sensor Scientists at Oregon State University have developed a that can measure the concentration of glucose in tears, and may one day be integrated into contact lenses for noninvasive glucometry.
The sensor relies on an amorphous indium gallium oxide field effect transistor, or IGZO FET, which can be connected to an external display device or insulin pump to create a more comprehensive diabetes management system. The sensor itself is essentially transparent, but there’s still a great deal of work left to be able to integrate it into a contact lens and be able to receive its readings. Nevertheless, we hope that the hardest part has been overcome and the remaining technical challenges will be conquered quickly. Certainly just about everyone with diabetes would love a way to measure blood glucose levels without having to prick themselves.

PANAMA Tips good to know
Carry small change – Taxi drivers and shop assistants will not accept 20 $ bills to pay for inexpensive items. Be sure to break notes before going shopping or getting a taxi in case you are left with no other option but to pay with a 20!
Transportation - Use Uber to get around. Taxi drivers like to rip tourists off so save some money and have a pleasant transportation experience by downloading Uber. most of your rides within the city will cost approximately $3.
Activities – Coffee tours are 25 $, a two-tank dive is around 60 $, most day hikes are around 50 $. A visit to the Panama Canal is 15 $. The popular San Blas island cruise is about 400 $ for 4 or 5 days.
Dress Code - Panama City is a place where people live & work not a beach town. Do not wear shorts out in the evenings because you risk not being able to get into some of the bars, restaurants & nightclubs.
