President’s Message Dear Fellow Alumni,

It’s hard to believe that it is time to welcome another eager group of medical, graduate, basic science, nurse anesthetist and physician assistant students!

D

uring this past academic year, I had the privilege of serving on the Admissions Committee for the incoming medical students. As mentioned in the last issue, we introduced the Multiple Mini Interview (MMI) process, which will be part of the evaluation process for candidates applying to medical school. You would be very impressed by the time, energy, collaboration and dedication of the committee members and the admissions staff, all of whom have the goal of selecting the persons who will be successful in their endeavors at the College and beyond.

Our 2013 Reunion was a tremendous success, and it was a distinct privilege to honor so many special and gifted alumni at this past reunion. I know you will enjoy reading more about them in this edition. Please be thinking about nominees for Distinguished Alumnus, Exemplary Alumni Support, Honorary Alumni, Humanitarian Alumnus and Meritorious Alumnus, as we’ll be seeking your nominations in the fall for 2014. And, be sure to mark April 25–27, on your calendars for Reunion 2014!

In June, as part of the Development Committee, I attended a tour of the new Patient Pavilion at Albany Medical Center. Our third and fourth-year students will have amazing opportunities in their clinical rotations in the new operating rooms and surgical and neonatal ICUs. We will provide extensive coverage on this transformation in the next issue of the Bulletin.

I’d like to personally extend my congratulations to Dean Vincent Verdile, M.D. ’84, who was awarded the John Marx Leadership Award from the Society of Academic Emergency Medicine. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Verdile on a well-deserved honor. His leadership continues to advance Albany Medical College (see coverage on page 19).

Dean’s Message Albany Medical College celebrates its 175th anniversary this year, making us one of the oldest medical schools in the country.

W

e also continue to be among the most technologically advanced, with state-of-the-art educational facilities housed in the Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center, and the newly opened Patient Pavilion where our students will learn the practice of medicine in one of the most advanced hospital settings in the country. Yet our commitment to the human approach to medical education remains as strong today as it was in 1839. For 175 years our students have pursued medicine with a passion to serve and to heal. Our faculty are committed to cultivating that passion and they continue to live up to our reputation of producing the most well prepared residents and researchers in the nation.

Be sure to read the full coverage of Reunion 2013 on pages 14–18. This year was another tremendous success in terms of the number of alumni we welcomed back to campus and in terms of the incredible generosity of our alumni. Alumni from the classes of 3s and 8s raised a record-setting $4.1 million in honor of their reunion this year! Thank you to everyone who raised the bar to challenge the next set of classes (including mine in the 4s and 9s) to beat this record!

This leads me to extend my official call to all of my fellow alumni to support our alma mater as we launch the public phase of the Lifeline Campaign during our 175th anniversary. We have set a $75 million dollar goal for the College to support our top priorities: the Alumni Annual Fund, scholarship, endowed chairs, faculty development and ongoing curriculum renewal. Many of you already have committed to the campaign during our quiet phase—thank you for your confidence and your generosity. I know I can count on all of you to join us in the campaign as we use our philanthropy to ensure that Albany Medical College continues to serve as one of the finest institutions for medical education for another 175 years!

As I travel around the country this year I hope to see and meet many of you.

I look forward to discussing the important issues and opportunities facing the College. I want us all to stay connected—and now there are many ways to do that. Local Doctor in Middle of Tragedy

N

othing was unusual about the injuries Dr. Kim Kilby saw steadily trickling into the Boston Marathon’s medical tent Monday afternoon.

The Albany Medical Center physician was assessing patients as they entered and directing them to the appropriate area of the sprawling tent set up near the finish line on Boylston Street. Some were suffering from dehydration while others were experiencing mild hypothermia—all conditions that are common for the storied 26.2-mile race each spring.

Kilby was hoping to bring back some practical experience to help improve operations at the Mohawk Hudson River Marathon, a race where she serves as medical director.

Instead, she got a first-hand look at how a field trauma unit operates during a mass casualty incident.

“The blast went off and sort of stopped everyone in their tracks,” she recalled of the first bomb. “There was smoke—you could smell it—and then people just started running.”

Someone doing announcements in the tent calmly asked physicians to help out at the blast site and another about a block away. Kilby grabbed a wheelchair and darted toward Boylston Street.

The first patient she saw was a gravely wounded woman,

dazed from the explosion and bleeding profusely; a marathon runner had already placed a belt around one of her badly injured legs as a tourniquet.

Kilby, still unaware of what had transpired, helped the woman into the chair and rushed her back to the medical tent.

By the time Kilby returned to the tent, it had been sectioned off so the most critical injuries could receive the necessary attention from the medical staff on hand. All the medical personnel in the tent were working in unison, giving the care they could provide and then getting bomb victims loaded into ambulances.

Everything happened so fast. Kilby and Racheal Klein, a third-year student at Albany Medical College, helped treat more than a half-dozen victims from the bombing over the course of less than two hours.

Many more poured through the tent during the chaotic moments after the explosions.

But the staffing in the tent was ample and the level of expertise among the physicians was sufficient.

“Everybody just did what they needed to do,” Kilby said.

“As chaotic as everything sounds, I’d say it was extremely well-coordinated. There were just the right people at the site of the problem to respond.”

Not that Kilby specializes in traumatic injuries. Formerly a family practitioner, she now

specializes in bariatrics and clinical nutrition at Albany Med. “I’m a family doctor,” she said. “I’m usually used to a calm outpatient setting.”

But she offered a trained hand during a time when many were needed. And the response likely saved lives.

Of the more than 170 people injured during the blast, only three have died—a remarkable figure considering the carnage.

Many of the injured suffered horrific wounds from the bomb shrapnel, including some who suffered amputated limbs.

“The name of the game yesterday was triage and transport immediately,” Barbara Ferrer, health commissioner for the city of Boston told the Wall Street Journal on Tuesday. “From

my perspective, the medical response was unbelievable.”

Kilby was also among the many people captured in photographs and videos emerging from the bombings Monday. Another was James Plourde, a Boston firefighter and native of Colonie, who was photographed carrying a badly injured girl in the immediate aftermath of the explosions.

Peter Plourde wasn’t sure if his son was on duty when he heard of the bombings late Monday afternoon. He tried sending text messages and started to worry when there was no response.

“It took my breath away,” he said.

The distraught father started flipping through the television news channels for information about the blast.

And that’s when he caught a glimpse of his son in a picture.

James Plourde, who graduated from Siena College in 2000, had originally moved to Boston become a teacher. Instead, he became an emergency medical service worker and eventually used the experience to get a job as a city firefighter.

Peter Plourde said his son isn’t sure of the fate of the girl he pulled from the blast, but he said watching his said respond in the aftermath of such a tragedy has become a source of pride.

“Seeing him do what he was trained to was great,” he said.

As a medical student at Albany Medical College, Ralph Giannella, M.D. ’65 and his classmates awaited Tuesday afternoons with mild dread.

That was the day that Dr. Richard Beebe would bring a patient with an unusual condition to Huyck Auditorium, where he would summon one student to stand at the front of the auditorium while Beebe asked questions meant to lead to a diagnosis.

“Dr. Beebe grilled us in a gentle, but firm way and taught us interesting aspects of the patient’s illness and medical history.

It was a formative class. He was tall, dignified and professorial and he impressed me as a superb doctor,” recalled Giannella, a gastroenterologist and the Mark Brown Professor of Medicine in the Division of Digestive Diseases at the University of Cincinnati. Giannella is an international authority on intestinal infections and foodRichard borne illnesses. He is a former president of the Beebe, M.D. American Gastroenterological Association and was named one of the top 75 gastroenterologists in the U.S. Giannella is a native of Paterson, N.J., who lives with his wife of 40 years, Patricia, in Cincinnati.

They have two grown sons and two grandchildren.

“It was exciting, nostalgic and moving to be back,” said Giannella, who visited his alma mater on April 26 to present the 2013 Distinguished Alumnus Lecture, “The Joy of Being a Physician,” as part of Reunion.

Giannella’s career allowed him to work as a clinician, teacher, researcher and administrator. “It’s not so doable today, but I enjoyed it,” he said. Giannella has been at the University of Cincinnati’s College of Medicine since 1980 and served as Director

of the Division of Gastroenterology for 23 years, where he led a staff of 15 medical doctors, five Ph.D.s and 50 technicians and support personnel. Training more than 70 fellows in gastroenterology “was the most enjoyable part of the job,” he said.

During a residency at the Boston City Hospital, he treated a young male patient plagued by debilitating diarrhea as a result of a salmonella infection. He treated the patient, who made a full recovery, and that led to his first scholarly publication. He eventually published more than 100 original research articles. For three years in the early 1970s, he was Chief of Gastroenterology at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research in Washington, D.C. He worked with Dr. Sam Formal, a world-renowned expert on intestinal infections. “At the time, very little was known about how these bugs caused diarrheal diseases that plagued soldiers,” he said. Their groundbreaking work resulted in important articles in leading journals. Giannella eventually turned his expertise to e-coli, food-borne bacteria that can lead to severe food poisoning.

He was one of the first researchers to purify an e-coli toxin, a major advance. Diarrheal diseases continue to kill thousands of Americans and more than 1 million people annually worldwide, often linked to polluted water conditions and tainted poultry, eggs and hamburger.

He credited Dr. John Balint, a gastroenterologist and professor of medicine at Albany Medical College, with sparking his original interest in the specialty. “His enthusiasm was infectious,” Giannella recalled. “It was obvious he was having so much fun with what he was doing. That had a big influence on me.”

EXEMPLARY ALUMNI SUPPORT AWARD

David Falk, M.D. ’43 The Exemplary Alumni Support Award recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated extraordinary dedication and philanthropic support of Albany Medical College. Dr. Falk is the single largest alumnus donor in the history of the College. A recipient of the Exemplary Alumni Support Award in 2002, Dr. Falk was recognized with this award for a second time. His unwavering generosity to the College over the past 40 years exemplifies his commitment and dedication. Dr. Falk celebrated his 70th reunion this year and stepped forward with a gift of $2.5 million to fund the Vincent P. Verdile, M.D. ’84 Endowed Chair for Emergency Medicine and the James J. and Rose A. Barba Endowed Education Fund. With this gift, Dr. Falk’s lifetime total giving exceeds $6.6 million.

HUMANITARIAN AWARD

Naomi N. Shields, M.D. ’82 The Humanitarian Award, created in 1995, recognizes graduates who excel, beyond daily practice, in serving mankind. Dr. Shields has traveled on numerous humanitarian missions, including 15 trips to Vietnam and five trips to Haiti. During her trips abroad, she works with local physicians and medical personnel and also performs surgery. She visits a local homeless shelter on an annual basis participating in “Our Souls to your Soles,” an outreach of Souls 4 Soles, dedicated to fitting shoes and providing basic foot care to the homeless.

MERITORIOUS SERVICE AWARD

Alan M. Sanders, M.D. ’88 The Meritorious Service Award recognizes an alumnus who has demonstrated a deep commitment and an active participation in the Albany Medical College Alumni Association. Dr. Sanders was recognized for his service on the Alumni Association board and exemplary leadership as its past president, unwavering support of the College, and continued dedication to teaching residents and medical students. This year, Dr. Sanders worked tirelessly as a class agent and coordinator for his class’s 25th reunion and was tremendously successful in increasing attendance and reunion giving.

HONORARY MEMBER OF THE ALUMNI ASSOCIATION The Honorary Member of the Alumni Association Award recognizes outstanding senior members of the College faculty who have contributed meritoriously in teaching and in furthering the excellence of Albany Medical College. This year, the Alumni Association was proud to induct two members: Steven A. Fein, M.D. and Elizabeth A. Higgins, M.D.

Dr. Fein was recognized for his dedication as a physician-educator and for his more than 30 years of service on the faculty of the College. He has played an integral role in the training of medical students, residents and cardiology fellows, as well as physician assistant students, nurse practitioners, nurse anesthetists and cardiac ultrasonographers. Dr. Fein has served as associate head of cardiology for many years and is currently the director of non-invasive cardiology at Albany Medical Center.

Elizabeth A. Higgins, M.D. Dr. Higgins was recognized for her excellence in teaching and her dedication and responsiveness to student concerns. She served as program director of the College residency program for 10 years prior to becoming the associate dean of Academic Affairs and Student Services. She lectures regularly on professionalism and has been recognized by the students for excellence in teaching with the Golden Apple award numerous times. The students admire that Dr. Higgins is approachable, responsive to student concerns, and is always looking for ways to improve life at Albany Medical College.

Jason K. Frankel, M.D. ’13 The Frank C. Maxon, Jr., M.D. Alumni Award is given each year to a fourth year medical student who has shown outstanding personal, academic and professional qualities, and, who has exhibited an active interest in the projects and programs of the Alumni Association.

While at Albany Medical College, Jason served on the honor committee and volunteered for various community outreach programs including: Care from the Start and Apple Wars. A “volunteer staple” at alumni gatherings, Jason lent his support and upbeat energy during reunion weekend and at regional events. Additionally, Jason’s interest in global health initiatives has taken him most recently to Africa where he participated in a project in Southern Sudan under the mentorship of alumnus, Thomas F. Burke M.D. ’89. Jason will pursue his training in urology at the University of Connecticut.

Graduate Student Award

Alexander C. Sutton, Ph.D. Candidate The Graduate Student Alumni Award recognizes a graduate student who has exhibited outstanding scholastic ability, and has been actively involved with the Graduate Student Organization (GSO).

Alexander, known as “Alex” by his friends and colleagues, was a student representative to the Center for Neuropharmacology and Neuroscience, treasurer of the GSO and recipient of the Dean and Alumni Research Awards during each of his years at the College. A unique partnership between departments at Albany Medical Center allowed Alex to interview patients and collect data, assisting the functional neurosurgery team in the operating room alongside alumna Julie G. Pilitsis, M.D. ’98, Ph.D. Alexander Sutton, Ph.D. candidate

I

n the middle of her comments at the recent annual scholarship celebration, Lara began talking about a toddler who came to Albany Med because of a seizure, before being diagnosed and successfully treated for a brain tumor.

“That particular case stuck out for me,” the Troy native told a room full of scholarship donors and student recipients.

“The patient was my 14-month-old niece.”

The room fell absolutely silent as Reichert took just a second to catch her breath.

“Watching the neurologists do their exams and then watching the level of care given from all of the staff in the PICU (pediatric intensive care unit) made me realize what an amazing place Albany Med is,” she said.

Her comments took listeners on a roller-coaster ride of emotions, from light-hearted to somber and back up again.

But the journey arrived at gratitude when discussing the role scholarship has played in her non-traditional journey toward becoming a doctor.

A literature major at Massachusetts Institute of Technology, she gravitated toward medicine, spending a summer in a Nicaraguan hospital. That led her to George Washington University and work in an inner-city clinic while she pursued a Master’s Degree in Public Health before deciding to attend Albany Med, where she is a recipient of the Slowe Zuckerman Scholarship and the Rachel Catherine Ricciardelli Bruno Endowed Scholarship.

“Thanks to you, our amazing benefactors,” she told the donors in the room, “I spend my time thinking about how the kidney works or what labs we need to order, not about my tuition bill or how I’ll repay my loans when I graduate.”

Instead, she’s focusing on representing Albany Med as a “smart, skilled physician,” one who will be ready to provide the same expert and compassionate care to someone else’s 14-monthold niece, and every other patient she sees.

Giving Program

The 2013 Reunion Giving program was the most successful fundraising effort to date, raising $4.1 million. This funding supports the top priorities of the College, including the Alumni Annual Fund and endowed scholarships.

Reunion Class Gifts Accolades Proud to be celebrating their 25th reunion, the Class of 1988 endowed a new scholarship in celebration of their reunion, and in memory of four departed classmates—Thomas Brassell, D. Eric Livingston, Peter S. Richards and John G. Sirois. “I am so proud of my class and their generosity,” said Alan Sanders, M.D. ’88.

“We’ve come together to help change the lives of medical students for generations to come—I’m proud to be a part of that.”

Dr. Sanders along with two classmates, Stephen Schutz, M.D. ’88 and Lee Schulman, M.D. ’88 led the charge to encourage giving to the class scholarship. In a record-breaking six months, the class raised $75,000 for their class scholarship.

Alumni couple Gila-Wiener Kriegel, M.D. ’83 and Bruce Kriegel, M.D. ’83 supported the Alumni Annual Fund to honor their 30th reunion, a crucial funding stream that supports students, faculty and college programs. Drs. Kriegel felt that contributing to the Annual Fund was “a wonderful excuse to support the outstanding work that is being done at AMC to help provide today’s students with the kind of transformational learning experience we had while in medical school.”

Engeye Forum Panel Discussion A team of Albany Medical College faculty including faculty, physicians, medical students and residents held a forum to discuss their recent medical mission to Uganda during “Voices from Engeye—a Panel Discussion” on April 2.

Mara McErlean, M.D. Named Director of Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center

W

hen Mara McErlean, M.D., a former chair of emergency medicine at Albany Med, became director of the Patient Safety and Clinical Competency Center (PSCCC) this spring, she discovered that one of the most important elements of the Center’s approach was not just the extraordinary technology used to train doctors.

She also was impressed by the people who portray patients as part of teaching medical students and others. Her goal is to ensure that these “standardized patients” play a critical role in improving the quality of care for people throughout the region.

The work of the standardized patients is to provide feedback and reactions that mannequins cannot give, which Dr. McErlean called an absolutely critical element of training all health care providers.

“They create a plausibility that helps to elevate the realism and excitement of the situation,” Dr. McErlean explained.

In addition to working with students, residents, nurse anesthetists, physician assistants and other allied health workers, the PSCCC uses model patients to train local emergency medical services providers, law enforcement personnel and emergency responders.

Dr. McErlean hopes to expand simulation and standardized patient training into even more disciplines throughout the hospital and in the community.

Recently, cases have been developed in which standardized patients work with simulation mannequins to play the role of a family member of an accident victim, or a loved one receiving a cancer diagnosis.

“Through the Patient Safety Center, Albany Med is in the unique position to improve quality and patient safety and ensure medical competence throughout this entire region, and that is our goal,” Dr. McErlean said.

Women in Medicine Networking Reception

The American Medical Women’s Association (AMWA) and the Albany Medical College Alumni Association hosted its annual networking reception on April 9: Women in Medicine— Perspectives of the Female Physician. The event brought together women from various stages of their medical careers for an evening of mentoring, motivation and camaraderie. The esteemed panelists included: Victoria Balkoski, M.D. ’83, chair, department of psychiatry; Shaden Eldakar-Hein, M.D., assistant professor of medicine; Meridith J. Englander, M.D. ’97, assistant professor of radiology; and Julie A. Pilitsis, Ph.D., M.D. ’98, associate professor of neurosurgery. The medical students and panelists engaged in a lively discussion on what it means to be a female physician, the importance of work-life balance, the need

for strong mentoring, and the challenges that continue to persist for female physicians. The reception inspired the medical students in attendance, to become strong voices for the advancement of women in medicine through their own careers.

Editor’s note: Aleena Paul was recently elected AMWA Regional Director for New York and New Jersey. During the next year, she will work to strengthen the AMWA chapters at medical schools across NY and NJ. It is her hope to create programming that will provide female medical students with strong mentors and raise awareness of gender bias issues throughout the region. NIH Grant Received The Center for Immunology & Microbial Disease (CIMD) at Albany Medical College has received a five-year $2.9 million grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases entitled, “Criteria-Directed Vaccine Generation Via Ag Mimicry, Adjuvancy, and APC-Targeting” in July.

Alan S. Boulos, M.D. ’94 joins Society of Neurological Surgeons The Society of Neurological Surgeons, which has been described as “the oldest neurosurgical professional organization in the world,” has chosen Alan S. Boulos, M.D. ’94, the chief of the division of neurosurgery at Albany Medical Center, the director of the neurovascular section, and an associate professor of neurosurgery and radiology at the College, to become its newest member. The society, which is known for being selective, is made up of just 200 leaders in the field of neurosurgery, nationwide.

Senior Class Gift Raising funds for scholarship is one of the top priorities of the college. A deserving medical student will receive a scholarship award in the future and he or she can offer thanks to the Class of 2013.

The Senior Class Gift program is determined by a class vote and this year supports the Alumni Scholarship Fund, a scholarship fund that is immediately spent and aimed at alleviating some of the high cost of medical school by awarding to deserving students.

Providing added motivation, Dean Vincent P. Verdile, M.D. ’84, Thomas Hughes, M.D. ’83, Janet Gargiulo, M.D. ’79 and the Alumni Association extended challenges to provide matching gifts if participation goals were reached. The students met the challenges and finished with 66% participation.

“I am so thankful to the Dean, Dr. Hughes and the Alumni Association,” said Justin Rice, Student Council President.

Their idea to challenge the class really raised the bar for giving.

Sixty-six percent of our class participating is a wonderful gift to the college in honor our graduation and our class’s legacy. We hope that our gift will provide much-needed financial assistance to students in need.”

The Travel Stipend Program An important part of the overall mission of the Albany Medical College Alumni Association, is to encourage and promote student educational opportunities during their time at Albany Medical College. The Travel Stipend Program provides much-needed financial support to students to help offset the costs associated with participating at conferences throughout the country. Support to the Alumni Annual Fund enables the College to continue supporting these critical student initiatives.

Nabeel Ali, Class of 2016 “I have been conducting research in the Department of Radiology at the Massachusetts General Hospital/ Harvard Medical School.

I recently submitted my abstract to the Association of University Radiologists (AUR) Conference in Los Nabeel Ali, Class of 2016 Angeles, CA held in April.

The work is entitled, “A Novel Analysis Algorithm for Quantitative Assessment of Myocardial CT Perfusion.” The abstract was accepted for poster presentation.

Further, I received a major national award for the work. The AUR granted me the “1st place Trainee Award.” Medical students, residents, and fellows who submit work to the AUR conference compete for this award. I am one of the only medical students to ever receive this award.

The award was presented to me at a conference ceremony in front of leaders in the field of radiology and medicine.

The opportunity to present my work at a national forum as well as receive a major award gave me great confidence as a future physician.

I would like to thank the Alumni Association for their support, and for making this opportunity a reality.”

David Levine, Class of 2016 “I attended the annual meeting of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons in New Orleans, Louisiana in April. My summer research project was selected to be presented during one of the stereotactic and functional neurosurgery sessions of the conference.

During the talk, titled “Accuracy in Staged Bilateral Deep Brain Stimulation Surgery,” I presented data comparing the accuracy of stimulator implantation across three different surgical procedures. The conference also provided me with the chance to meet many of the country’s leading neurosurgeons, learn about the latest research and engineering offerings within the field, and participate in informative practical clinics.

Overall it was an inspiring experience and a fun first time visit to New Orleans. I would like to thank my mentor, Julie Pilitsis, M.D.’ 98, Ph.D., for her invaluable guidance, as well as Albany Medical College and the Alumni Association for the opportunity to attend the meeting.”

Five Questions for Kristina DePeau Gracey

By Kathryn Caggianelli Kristina DePeau Gracey, of Guilderland, MPH, 30, is a new mother and a medical student at Albany Medical College about to begin her medical residency there. She grew up in Stafford Springs, Conn. and attended Trinity College in Hartford, where she studied neuroscience and neuropsychology. After graduating Kristina Gracey, M.D. ‘13. from Trinity, Gracey worked in Boston performing neuroimaging research, followed by her pursuit of a Masters of Public Health in Maternal and Child Health at Boston University. She next worked for one year at Yale in New Haven on Pediatric Infectious Disease research studies before moving to Albany with her now-husband Dan Gracey, a local attorney. Gracey, an avid runner, has participated in the Turkey Trot.

Q. What led you to the career path of becoming a physician?

A. Before I pursued medical school, I was a researcher. I am a detail-oriented, scientifically minded person. But I absolutely love patient care and while doing research, I recognized that spending time with patients was critical for me. I love learning about patients. Every bit of information is important when it comes to understanding how to better care for a patient. I also like looking at patterns in patient populations and I am excited to combine my clinical and research skills in the years to come.

delivering babies! I am interested in caring for patients of all ages, male and female, with a wide range of backgrounds and conditions, although I do have a specific interest in maternal and child health and also sports medicine. I enjoying working with my hands and performing procedures.

Q. Why did you choose to study at Albany Medical College?

A. I chose Albany Medical College because of the excellent academic education linked to a large, tertiary care medical center.

I didn’t know when I selected Albany Medical College how truly phenomenal the hospital system was, how accessible the physicians would be to medical students, or how much I would love my medical education. Learning these things made me love the College more throughout my four years.

Q. How have you been able to balance your career pursuits as a new mother?

A. I had Amelia on spring break of my second year of medical school. I felt so well-supported at Albany Medical College and chose to spend a year at home with Amelia between my second and third years of medical school. I feel that my family gives me balance and perspective in my life and I feel very grateful for what my husband and daughter give me every day of my life.

Q. Tell me what category you ran in and how important it is to you to maintain a healthy lifestyle while running the Turkey Trot.

A. I love running and I especially love the Turkey Trot! I ran the Turkey Trot the past two years and plan to run it again this year; it’s a tradition now! Racing down the historic streets with so many people cheering us along is an awesome experience.

The College awarded more than 200 degrees including medical degrees, Master of Science degrees in Physician Assistant Studies, Nurse Anesthesiology and Bioethics, and doctoral degrees in Biomedical Science.

Bruce Beutler, M.D., a Nobel laureate credited with developing groundbreaking methods to block the immune system’s inflammatory reaction, delivered the keynote address. Dr. Beutler was a recipient of the 2009 Albany Medical Center Prize in Medicine and Biomedical Research.

Doctors In Uniform

At Commencement, following conferral of degrees, Kevin C. Kiley, M.D., Chair of Obstetrics & Gynecology and Retired 41st Surgeon General, United States Army, approached the podium and spoke: “Dean Verdile, thank you for the opportunity to participate in this important ceremony. I ask Doctor Dennis McKenna (M.D., Albany Medical College ’92) Medical Director of Albany Medical Center Hospital, to join me in administering the oath. Doctor McKenna, Captain, Medical Corps, United States Navy, has deployed to Somalia and twice to Iraq. On the ground, his assignments centered on providing medical care as Battalion Surgeon to United States Marines.”

“The young doctors you have just seen awarded their diplomas and reciting the oath have joined the profession of medicine. A select few will now join the profession of arms, to serve our nation and care for our soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, retirees and their families. The commissioning oath is legally binding under the Uniform Code of Military Justice. I am reminded of what General Creighton Abrams, former Chief of Staff of the Army, said: ’What America needs, it cannot buy! It needs men (and women) who see service to the nation as an affair of the heart!’

So let me call forward these young doctors who have this affair of the heart so they can take their commissioning oath.”

[At this point the audience began to rise and applaud.]

As Doctor Kiley called their names, the officer candidates walked on stage in the uniforms of their respective branches: Doctor Lisa M. Angotti, Captain, United States Air Force Doctor Amanda M. Jackson, Captain, United States Army Doctor Ian A. Mullikin, Captain, United States Army Doctors Kiley and McKenna faced the candidates, and Doctor McKenna administered the oath: “Raise your right hands and repeat after me: I (state your full name), having been commissioned an officer in the Armed Forces of the United States, do solemnly swear that I will support and defend the Constitution of the United States, against all enemies, foreign and domestic, that I will bear true faith and allegiance to the same; that I take this obligation freely, without mental reservation or purpose of evasion; and that I will well and faithfully execute the duties of the office upon which I am about to enter. So help me, God!” Another graduate, not sworn in because he is already a serving officer, is Brian C. Hunter, Lieutenant, United States Public Health Service, MS in Physician Assistant Studies.

Following the oath, Deirdre Michael, AMC Space Management, came to the podium. The new officers faced the Colors and saluted, and the assembly remained standing. Ms. Michael sang the National Anthem, unaccompanied, with skill and spirit.

Dr. Sutter Sees ‘Duty’ In Giving Back Gary Sutter, M.D., ’76, and his wife Vera were married and living with her parents in Schodack when he attended Albany Medical College. Both born of modest backgrounds, they’ve long held tight to the belief, passed down to their children, that philanthropy is a duty.

The Venice, CA, couple has loyally given back to Albany Medical College through the Alumni Annual Fund. But when HealthCare Partners of California, the company where Dr. Sutter was a founding partner and clinical research director, sold in 2012, Dr. and Mrs. Sutter decided to endow a significant scholarship at Albany Medical Center.

“We have plenty of money to give back,” Dr. Sutter said.

“We felt we owed (Albany Med). With the blessing of the sale, we wanted to give back to the medical school.”

Dr. Sutter came to Albany Medical College as a 26-year-old after serving as a Navy lieutenant in the Vietnam Era. “I’m grateful to Albany,” he said. “They took me as an older student, a married student, a student from out of state. They took a risk on me.

“It’s my duty and obligation to give back to the school.”

The leadership gift of $1 million established the Vera J. and Gary L. Sutter, M.D. ’76 Endowed Scholarship Fund, which will assist Albany Medical College students as they work toward assisting others.

“I hope it inspires others to give as well,” Dr. Sutter said.

“It’s gotten a lot more expensive to become a doctor. I believe medicine should draw people from all walks of life.”

Barbara and Nathaniel Silon, M.D. ’58 Nathaniel Silon, M.D. ’58 has been a Radiation Oncologist since the early 1960’s, mainly as Director associated with the Lehigh Valley Hospital Network in Allentown, PA. He recently funded a generous merit Scholarship Program at the Albany Medical College to express his deep gratitude to the College for the opportunity to fulfill a long-standing dream.

Having made the decision Nathaniel Silon, M.D. ’58 to change professions and to and wife, Barbara. enter medical training after World War II, he applied to many medical schools while completing pre-med admission requirements. Dr. Silon had to compete with younger Korean War veterans, and take the MCAT and multiple science exams in an attempt to accelerate medical school acceptance.

He remains grateful to Albany Medical College not only for the confidence placed in him to succeed academically but also for enabling him to achieve personal fulfillment.

At age 90, Dr. Silon and his wife, Barbara, reside in Florida, while he continues to practice radiation oncology as a substitute physician in several East coast states.

John M. Cohen M.D. ’63 “What more important thing can we do for our medical students than support their education? Giving to our Medical College gives me an opportunity to remain connected to ‘Our School’.”

Dr. Cohen celebrated his 50-year reunion by taking on the role of class agent and encouraging his classmates to join him in generous support of Albany Medical College. “As we look back on 50 years of medicine and marvel about the changes that we have seen in our profession,” he wrote, “I want to thank you for your thoughtful gift to our medical school.

Support of our current students remains so important, as they will be the best and brightest doctors of tomorrow.”

The class of 1963 raised $180,000 in honor of its reunion, supporting the Class of 1963 Scholarship, the Worsham Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Alumni Annual Fund.

Says Dr. Cohen, “I support the Medical College, as a means of guaranteeing that the very best of tomorrow’s physicians will be there to take care of me in the future. The most rewarding aspect of giving back is that I am supporting education.”

Drs. Alan and Maria Boulos ’94 Drs. Alan and Maria Boulos, both alumni of the class of 1994 and Albany Medical Center physicians, are supporting the latest expansion of the Medical Center with a generous gift to the Patient Pavilion. The couple gives back because they see firsthand how the Patient Pavilion will help their patients. In the Pavilion, the future of medicine is represented by stateof-the-art surgical suites and intensive care units, alongside calm and quiet spaces for patients, their families, and health care workers to meditate: an important blend of medical technology with a humanitarian approach.

As an alumni couple of the Medical College, Alan and Maria feel that in addition to their broad exposure to clinical medicine through Albany Medical Center, there is a unique strength of their medical education in the rich collaborative nature of the combined programs with our surrounding universities: Siena, with its focus on service and humanities; Union College, placing emphasis on the administration of medicine; Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, with its strong reputation in biomedical research; and the University at Albany, providing expertise in public health. Together, these partnerships form a unique and diverse community among our medical students that forms the basis of a well-rounded educational experience for all the students.

Thomas Durant Albany Medical College and the Transcontinental Railroad

A

featured character on the AMC Channel’s program “Hell on Wheels,” Albany Medical College graduate, Dr. Thomas Clark Durant devoted his life not to medicine, but to a life of business ventures. Born in Lee, Massachusetts, he was one of the first students to attend Albany Medical College and received his degree in 1840. Following his graduation, he practiced medicine for only three years, before giving up the profession to work for his uncle’s grain exporting company. Despite the fact he no longer practiced medicine, he continued to use the title of Doctor.

His work with grain spurred him to become a promoter for improved shipment transportation and helped to peak his interest in railroads. In 1854 he founded the Missouri and Mississippi Railroad. This business opportunity allowed him to gain control of the growing Pacific Railroad project. Using money he obtained through smuggling contraband cotton from the Confederate states, he eventually secured control of the Union Pacific Railroad.

Durant became the vice president of the Union Pacific and was responsible for raising funds to build the railroad. Durant’s thirst for money and power led him to stock manipulation as well as created conflicts among Union Pacific board members. Eventually, Durant was forced from the board of directors of the Union Pacific, but not before he helped to “drive in the golden spike” to complete the first transcontinental railroad on May 10, 1869.

John Booss, M.D. ’65

In June, Dr. Cassell was the recipient of the Jefferson Public Service Award for his work as founder of the Bergen Volunteer Medical Initiative in Hackensack, New Jersey, a free clinic staffed primarily by medical volunteers.

Dr. Booss and Marilyn J. August’s book, “To Catch a Virus” was published in March 2013.

Arthur E. Crago, M.D. ’66 Dr. Crago was named 2013 Community Clinician of the Year by the Barnstable, Massachusetts District Medical Society in April. The award recognized Dr. Crago’s professional contributions as a physician.

Donald L. Price, Sr., M.D. ’61 Dr. Price presented “One Individual’s Lifelong Interest in Lou Gehrig’s disease: The Challenges of Basic and Translational Research” on April 25 as the Schaffer-Neuschatz speaker at the Neuroscience Grand Rounds at Albany Medical College. Dr. Price, professor emeritus of the departments of pathology, neurology and neuroscience at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, received the Schaffer-Neuschatz award immediately prior to his Grand Rounds presentation. (Dr. Price also served as a keynote speaker for the NY CAP Research Alliance Symposium on April 24. The symposium was held at the Center for Biotechnology and Interdisciplinary Studies auditorium on the Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute campus.)

Richard O. Johnson, M.D. ’72 Dr. Johnson has been appointed to the California Commission on Emergency Medical Services. A pediatrician, Dr. Johnson is chair of the Public Health Emergency Preparedness and Response Committee for the California Conference of Local Health Officers. He is also a member of the American Public Health Association and the National Association of City and County Health Officials.

Steven P. Pinheiro, M.D. ’75 Dr. Pinheiro has published a medical mystery novel entitled “Lost Generations.” It is authored under his pen name, Steven Noble, and is available locally at the Book House of Stuyvesant Plaza, or online at www.TBMBooks.com.

David Nalin, M.D.’65 was presented the Friends of Liberation War Honor Award by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh.

David R. Nalin, M.D. ’65 On March 24, 2013, in Bangladesh, David Nalin, M.D. ’65 was presented the Friends of Liberation War Honor Award

by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh. The award honors international citizens who provided critical support during the country’s independence movement.

Dr. Nalin was also featured on the May 3, 2013 CNN segment: Life’s Work for his path breaking work with oral rehydration therapy for cholera victims. The special highlighted Dr. Nalin’s development of rehydration therapy in 1968, while working during a cholera epidemic in Bangladesh.

He recognized that the volume of oral rehydration therapy required isn’t the same for every patient, and this idea has saved millions of lives—not just from cholera, but from any diarrhea. The Lancet, a prestigious British medical journal, called this “potentially the most important medical advance of this century.”

Harold R. Goldberg, M.D. ’77 Dr. Goldberg, of Spokane, Washington, is part of a team of international cardiologist surgeons, “Visiting Cardiac Surgical Teams” that work in Rwanda, Africa with children and young patients whose lives are threatened by rheumatic heart disease. To date, more than 300 cardiac surgeries have been completed by teams representing more than three continents. The visiting surgeons provide

local medical and nursing staff with educational training and support, and are working toward the creation of an independent Rwandan Cardiac Surgery Program.

Richard H. Dal Col, M.D.’82 In July, Dr. Dal Col was named medical director for surgical services at Capital District Physician’s Health Plan (CDPHP) in Albany, New York.

Dr. Dal Col will work as a liaison between CDPHP and the physician community.

annual meeting in Sonoma, California. The Helfer Society is an international organization of physicians dedicated to treating and preventing child abuse.

The Helfer Award, considered to be the society’s highest honor, is given annually to a society member who has made significant contributions to the field of child abuse pediatrics.

Szema is recognized as the first researcher to identify newonset asthma in previously healthy soldiers from Long Island who had served in Iraq and Afghanistan. He named the range of lung conditions affecting these soldiers, “Iraq Afghanistan War Lung Injury.”

For the sixth consecutive year, Albany Medical Center’s Epilepsy and Human Brain Mapping Program has received a Level 4 designation, the highest designation offered by the prestigious National Association of Epilepsy Centers (NAEC) under the directorship of Dr. Ritaccio, J. Spencer Standish professor of neurology and neurosurgery.

Dr. Rapoport was appointed to a four-year term on the American College of Radiology (ACR) Guidelines and Standards Neuroradiology Committee, and to the Reference Committee that oversees ACR by-laws revisions at the ACR 2013 national meeting.

Anthony M. Szema, M.D. ’91 Dr. Szema received the 2012 Albion O. Bernstein, M.D. Award from the Medical Society of the State of New York (MSSNY) in April. The award is given to a physician, surgeon or scientist who has made a “recent and widely beneficial scientific discovery in medicine, surgery or the prevention of disease.” Dr.

In July, Dr. O’Conner was named Creighton University’s first provost. He will be responsible for nine schools and colleges as well as Student Life and University Ministry at the Omaha, Nebraska campus.

Robert J. Paeglow, M.D. ’94 Dr. Paeglow received the 2013 Outstanding Outpatient Preceptor Golden Apple Award at Albany Medical College.

The award is presented by the graduating class to a faculty member to recognize their teaching of the clinical sciences and continued concern for the quality of education in an outpatient setting.

Sankar J. Kausik, M.D. ’96 Dr. Kausik has been named chief of urology for the Upper Chesapeake Medical Center, part of Upper Chesapeake Health, an affiliate partner with the University of Maryland Medical System in Baltimore, Maryland in March.

Jennifer L. Koestler, M.D. ’96 Dr. Koestler has been promoted to vice dean for medical education at New York Medical College in Valhalla, New York in August. She joined the College in 2008, and has served as the associate dean for medical edu- cation and faculty advisor for the Gold Humanism Honor Society.

Eleni A. Tousimis, M.D. ’86 Dr. Tousimis has been named the 2013-14 president of the board of directors for the American Medical Women’s Association.

The award is presented by the graduating class to a faculty member to recognize their teaching of the basic sciences and continued personal concern for the well being of the student body. Dr. Jones was also named the Frank Blumenstock Teacher of the Year for the College’s Academic Term 2012-13 by the Class of 2015. Dr. Jones was recognized for his excellence and enthusiasm as a lecturer.

The award, considered one of the community’s most prestigious honors bestowed upon a physician, was presented to Dr. Gregory in May. Class of 2005

Dr. Mastrangelo, a radiologist, joined the staff of Saratoga Hospital in Saratoga Springs, New York in May.

Keer Sun Ph.D. ’06 Dr. Sun received a $1.9 million five-year grant from the National Institutes of Health, National Institute of Heart, Lung and Blood in support of her research entitled “Oxidative Burst in Influenza and MRSA Co-infection” in May. She is an assistant professor in the Center for Immunology & Microbial Disease at Albany Medical College.

2013 Golden Apple Award Recipients The Albany Medical College Alumni Association notes with sadness the passing of Robert D. Wickham, M.D. ’52 in February 2013. Dr. and Mrs. Wickham generously established the Golden Apple Awards to honor the College’s commitment to excellence in teaching.
