To use a peak flow meter, have your child:

Stand. Remove any food or gum from his/her mouth. Slide the arrow to the bottom of the numbered scale.

4. Take a slow deep breath and blow into the peak flow meter as hard and as fast as he/she can. (Tell him/her to stop if he/she begins to cough or wheeze. Try again in a few minutes.)

5. Write down the number reached by the arrow. 6. Repeat steps 3–5 two more times. 7. Write down his highest score on his/her asthma diary. (Don’t average the numbers.)

Make sure the peak flow meter is level. Your child should not blow down.

NOTE: Measure daily peak flow meter scores when your child wakes up in the morning, before medicines are taken.

Personal Best Peak Flow Score For 2 to 3 weeks, measure and write down your child’s peak flow scores: in the afternoon (between 12 noon and 2 PM may be the best time) or any other time the doctor tells you to The best score during this time is your child’s personal best peak flow score. To check on your child’s breathing, you and the doctor will use this personal best score as a guideline.
