M
y mom and dad knew just what to do.
4
They took me to the doctor, and he gave me a check up. He figured out that I have diabetes. He told me I would need to stay in a hospital for a couple of days. Mom and dad said that the people at the hospital would help me learn to feel better. Let me tell you about my hospital visit.

W
hen we got to the hospital, a lady asked my mom lots of questions.
6
W
hen she was finished, another lady took us to my hospital room.

THUMP! THUMP! THUMP!
T

T
hen she checked to see how tall I was.
M

M
y bed wasn’t like my bed at home. My hospital bed could go up and down with just a push of a button. I could also raise my head or feet. It fit me perfectly!
I
met a doctor who takes care of people with diabetes. She is a special type of doctor called an Endocrinologist. She told me that I have many body parts. Sometimes one part may not work as well as it should.

What My Body Parts Do Lungs
(Help me to breathe.)
14
Stomach
(Digests my food.)
T
Heart
(Pumps my blood.)
Pancreas
(Makes insulin and digestive juices.)
he part of me that wasn’t working very well was my pancreas. The doctor told me that my pancreas wasn’t making enough insulin. Insulin is important because it helps my body use food to give me energy. She said I have Type 1 diabetes, which means I need injections of insulin.
15
S
he said I would need insulin, exercise and healthy food every day. She also told me I would be back playing baseball pretty soon . . .Oh boy! A new nurse told me that she was a CDE, that means a Certified Diabetes Educator. She took special classes so she can teach my mom, dad and me everything about diabetes.
T
he nurse showed me a glucose monitor. It shows how much insulin I need. To find out how much I needed, she had to get a little drop of blood to do a test.
16
S
he barely poked the side of my finger. She was done before I could blink!
S
he put a little drop of blood on the strip in the monitor. Then the monitor showed us numbers that told us how much glucose was in my blood. Those numbers told us how much insulin I needed.
18
T
hen the nurse gave me an injection of insulin. It felt like a tiny, little bug bite. It was over real fast.
19
T
he dietitian came to talk with my parents and me. She taught us how to pick foods that will help me stay healthy. She told me I would be eating good food. Once in a while I could even have my favorite chocolate cake!
20
M
y doctor, nurse, dietitian and mom and dad, all work together to help me feel better and stay healthy. Hmmmm...we are a team, just like my baseball team!
W
hen it was time to eat again, the hospital gave me lots of good food. I even got to pick what I wanted each day from a menu.
